- 0:04Speaker 1: We're back. It's the Craigway Show with Hall of Fame
- 0:07Speaker 1: broadcaster in voice of the Texas Longheards Craig Way.
- 0:18Speaker 2: The college football playoff quarterfinal at the Sugar Bowl between
- 0:21Speaker 2: Notre Dame in Georgia underway, and the Bulldogs are already
- 0:26Speaker 2: gonna have to punt on their opening drive, in fact
- 0:28Speaker 2: under review right now because it looks like Notre Dame
- 0:31Speaker 2: actually forcing a fun ball as Georgia quarterback Gunner stocked
- 0:34Speaker 2: him with scrambling out to his right trying to throw
- 0:36Speaker 2: the ball away. Actually the Notre Dame defensive back knocked
- 0:40Speaker 2: it out, so it was a live ball went out
- 0:42Speaker 2: of bounds, so Georgia will still have the pun they'll
- 0:44Speaker 2: be backed up a few yards in their own territory.
- 0:46Speaker 2: But remember they're starting punter Brett Thorson out for the
- 0:50Speaker 2: year after suffering that season ending knee injury against Texas
- 0:54Speaker 2: and then SEC championship. So Drew Miller, a freshman from Iowa,
- 0:58Speaker 2: is about to attempt his for ever collegiate punt in
- 1:02Speaker 2: his collegiate career, so keep an eye on that. But
- 1:05Speaker 2: Notre Dames defense looked pretty good. There was a defensive
- 1:09Speaker 2: pass interference call that did extend the Georgia's drive. I
- 1:12Speaker 2: think that had three plays for negative two yards to
- 1:15Speaker 2: start within that defensive play defensive pass interference rather gave
- 1:19Speaker 2: Georgia first down, but that was their only first down
- 1:22Speaker 2: in that first quarter before getting ready to attempt this
- 1:25Speaker 2: punt and get the ball back to the Fighting Irish
- 1:27Speaker 2: for their first drive on offense. So we'll see what
- 1:29Speaker 2: Roley Leonard in this Fighting Irish offense can do. They
- 1:32Speaker 2: are a one point favorite in this game. The winner
- 1:35Speaker 2: this team will take on Penn State next week. Let's
- 1:38Speaker 2: hear some post teams sound from Steve starkesion Texas thirty
- 1:43Speaker 2: nine to thirty one victory over Arizona State in double overtime,
- 1:47Speaker 2: and cannot imagine the emotions that Steve saur ocusion in
- 1:50Speaker 2: this Texas team felt down by a touchdown and overtime,
- 1:54Speaker 2: facing fourth and thirteen, able to come back and tie
- 1:58Speaker 2: it and then eventually in the game in double overtime
- 2:01Speaker 2: after leading by double digits in the fourth quarter. So
- 2:04Speaker 2: we'll start with Steve's our occasions postgame opening remarks discussing
- 2:08Speaker 2: this victory for Texas.
- 2:10Speaker 3: First of all, hats off to Arizona State. Coach Dillingham,
- 2:14Speaker 3: they showed a ton of fight, a ton of resiliency.
- 2:17Speaker 3: It's a really good football team. And you know, we
- 2:21Speaker 3: went up sixteen in the fourth quarter. Their ability to
- 2:23Speaker 3: come back and take this thing to overtime was very impressive.
- 2:28Speaker 3: So congratulations to them on a heck of season and
- 2:32Speaker 3: a game played today. As far as our guys go,
- 2:35Speaker 3: today not our cleanest game of the year, and that's
- 2:40Speaker 3: okay to say that, But the one thing that I
- 2:43Speaker 3: know about our group is when our backs are against
- 2:47Speaker 3: the wall and when our best is needed, our best
- 2:50Speaker 3: shows up time and time again. And the resiliency that
- 2:53Speaker 3: these guys showed today was something as a coach makes
- 2:58Speaker 3: you really proud. You know that you know we weren't
- 3:01Speaker 3: at our best and it felt like a nay March
- 3:03Speaker 3: madness basketball game with the swings of emotions and things.
- 3:08Speaker 3: But fourth and fifteen and overtime to score, to come
- 3:13Speaker 3: right back and score again two point conversion and then
- 3:16Speaker 3: a great play by Andrew mccouba. Just throw out these guys,
- 3:20Speaker 3: because not every game is gonna be pretty. Not every
- 3:23Speaker 3: game is just gonna go exactly how you want it
- 3:26Speaker 3: to go, and there's gonna be plenty of stuff that
- 3:28Speaker 3: we're gonna look at this tape and say we've got
- 3:29Speaker 3: to do better and be better. But the one thing
- 3:32Speaker 3: I won't have to say is that our toughness in
- 3:34Speaker 3: our fight doesn't need to be better. And if there's
- 3:36Speaker 3: one thing that you want as a calling card for
- 3:38Speaker 3: your team, is just that. And so I think it's
- 3:41Speaker 3: a tribute to these guys up here and their leadership
- 3:44Speaker 3: and the culture that we have and their ability to
- 3:46Speaker 3: stay calm through the storm and execute when, like I said,
- 3:50Speaker 3: when our best was needed.
- 3:51Speaker 2: And we've not seen tax as a complete a comeback
- 3:54Speaker 2: performance this season, of course, really only two games where
- 3:57Speaker 2: they've trailed by any margin. Georgia the first time around
- 4:00Speaker 2: and got to a one score game in the third
- 4:02Speaker 2: quarter before Carson Beck completed that long third down out
- 4:05Speaker 2: of his end zone. Bulldogs would pull away when that
- 4:07Speaker 2: one thirty to fifteen. And then against Georgia in the
- 4:11Speaker 2: SEC Championship, trailed in the third quarter, got it to overtime,
- 4:15Speaker 2: but could not complete the comeback, could not lead in overtime,
- 4:18Speaker 2: end up losing in the SEC Championship. So for Texas
- 4:21Speaker 2: to be able to hold on and then we'll actually
- 4:25Speaker 2: really come from behind and overtime and then when it
- 4:28Speaker 2: shows really the termination and the grit from this Taxas team,
- 4:31Speaker 2: especially from quinn Ewers. Next thing from sark the third quarter.
- 4:37Speaker 2: We've talked about the issues in the third quarters for
- 4:41Speaker 2: Texas this season. There's a stat I did not get
- 4:44Speaker 2: this share in the Long Corn's game day on our
- 4:46Speaker 2: pregame show, but I'll share it with you guys now
- 4:48Speaker 2: since the Florida game, so now six games leave six
- 4:54Speaker 2: games now Texas has not scored a touchdown in the
- 5:00Speaker 2: third quarter. They scored zero points in the third quarter yesterday.
- 5:04Speaker 2: In fact, now including yesterday's games, the last six games,
- 5:08Speaker 2: Texas has been outscored in the third quarter sixty to sixteen,
- 5:13Speaker 2: sixty to sixteen. Now they've been able to with stan
- 5:18Speaker 2: Clemson in Arizona State. I don't I cannot foresee them
- 5:22Speaker 2: not scoring any points against a whouse State in the
- 5:23Speaker 2: third quarter next week and holding on to a victory.
- 5:26Speaker 2: But Steve Sarakisan was asked about the third quarter in
- 5:29Speaker 2: the fact that Arizona State basically controlled the entire third
- 5:33Speaker 2: quarter on offense.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Third quarter, in my opinion, was somewhat of a byproduct
- 5:36Speaker 3: of the first half We only ran twenty one plays
- 5:38Speaker 3: in the first half of the game, and then the
- 5:42Speaker 3: third quarter comes out, we go three and out. The
- 5:44Speaker 3: very next play we get the ball back after the
- 5:46Speaker 3: goal line stand, we give up the safety. But they
- 5:50Speaker 3: did a great job, and we knew coming into the
- 5:52Speaker 3: game that they were a tremendous ball possession team and
- 5:55Speaker 3: they do a great job to take care of the ball.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Tonight it was no different. They held the ball for
- 5:59Speaker 3: thirty eight minutes, right, and they limit your opportunities as
- 6:02Speaker 3: an offensive football team to you know, to take advantage
- 6:07Speaker 3: of that and over time, what that does is that
- 6:09Speaker 3: their style of play is they can wear on your defense.
- 6:12Speaker 3: And you know, clearly we got fatigues on their defensively
- 6:16Speaker 3: and their playmakers made some plays. The quarterback was scrambling
- 6:20Speaker 3: around and Scataboo was as advertised, you know, he got stronger.
- 6:23Speaker 3: It felt like though you could see him, he was
- 6:25Speaker 3: fatigued too. It was like a heavyweight fight. He made
- 6:28Speaker 3: some really critical plays and obviously on the go ball.
- 6:31Speaker 3: But to me, the third quarter was a little bit
- 6:33Speaker 3: of a microcosm of really the first half. It almost
- 6:36Speaker 3: bled all the way into the second half of just
- 6:38Speaker 3: we didn't have a lot of opportunities, and we weren't
- 6:41Speaker 3: taking advantage of things on first and second down to
- 6:44Speaker 3: stay ahead of the chains we were getting in third
- 6:45Speaker 3: and longs, we were putting the ball and it got difficult. Yeah.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Looking at the third quarter summary, Arizona State one hundred
- 6:52Speaker 2: and twenty five yards, Texas eight eight. They averaged six
- 6:57Speaker 2: yards per rush. Texas average negative point six. Not good.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Negative three rushing yards in that third quarter for Texas
- 7:04Speaker 2: one hundred for Arizona State. They had seven first downs
- 7:08Speaker 2: Texas with just won. There were two or four on
- 7:11Speaker 2: third down. They ran twenty one plays the Texas is six.
- 7:14Speaker 2: They averaged six yards per play. Texas had just one
- 7:17Speaker 2: point three yards per play. And then the time of
- 7:19Speaker 2: possession Arizona State twelve and a half minutes, Texas just
- 7:24Speaker 2: two minutes total in that third quarter. The game plan
- 7:28Speaker 2: for Arizona State to win this game. A key for
- 7:30Speaker 2: an upset you control the time of possession to keep
- 7:34Speaker 2: the offense on the field. And that was huge because
- 7:37Speaker 2: no matter how many big bodies you have on the
- 7:40Speaker 2: defensive line, if you're on the field for almost the
- 7:44Speaker 2: entire game, you will get tired. You are a human
- 7:47Speaker 2: being you will get fatigued and tired. And despite them
- 7:50Speaker 2: doing a great job of stopping Cam Scataboo in the
- 7:52Speaker 2: first half, eventually the second half they just did not
- 7:56Speaker 2: have the energy to keep up with them. And we
- 7:58Speaker 2: saw that in the second half half when Skattaboo was
- 8:01Speaker 2: just running down Texas defenders. So credit to him, credit
- 8:05Speaker 2: to Kenny Dillingham for a good offensive game plan, and
- 8:08Speaker 2: the key for Texas in this next upcoming matchup is
- 8:11Speaker 2: just figuring out a way to not have so many
- 8:13Speaker 2: three and outs, figuring out a way to keep your
- 8:15Speaker 2: offense on the field and get into a rhythm, because
- 8:18Speaker 2: that goes hand in hand with not being able to
- 8:21Speaker 2: run the football. If you only have six plays in
- 8:24Speaker 2: a quarter and you run the ball for negative point
- 8:28Speaker 2: six yards per rush, you're not doing a great job
- 8:31Speaker 2: of establishing the run. And on the other side, Arison
- 8:34Speaker 2: want to say, defense, they're not tired. You know they're
- 8:37Speaker 2: ready to go. So no matter what, if you're not
- 8:39Speaker 2: able to get the offense or get the defense tired,
- 8:42Speaker 2: you're not gonna be able to establish run. Against Clemson,
- 8:45Speaker 2: Texas was able to run a lot more plays and
- 8:48Speaker 2: get that defense tired and fatigued and that led to
- 8:52Speaker 2: the second half that led to Jayden Blue's seventy seven
- 8:54Speaker 2: yard touchdown run that led to Trey wise Er running
- 8:57Speaker 2: over defenders. You need to be able to be on
- 8:59Speaker 2: the field for more than just three plays on offense
- 9:02Speaker 2: without putting the ball to allow your offense to one
- 9:04Speaker 2: get rhythm, but also two to be able to start
- 9:07Speaker 2: to wear down the opposing defensive front, and Texas just
- 9:11Speaker 2: really did not get to do that. I mean overall
- 9:14Speaker 2: in this game, the amount of rushing yards total fifty
- 9:18Speaker 2: three and the fact that Texas was able to win
- 9:20Speaker 2: this game averaging one point eight yards per carry is
- 9:23Speaker 2: crazy because the two games where they were not able
- 9:26Speaker 2: to run the ball came against Georgia. Those were the
- 9:29Speaker 2: two losses Texas had this year. So right at the
- 9:32Speaker 2: Quinn yours in the offensive line pass protection for finding
- 9:36Speaker 2: out a way to mitigate not being able to run
- 9:40Speaker 2: the ball and also not being able to kick a
- 9:43Speaker 2: field goal. Last thing from start before we had this break. Defensively,
- 9:48Speaker 2: despite the numbers that Arizona State put up, the defense
- 9:52Speaker 2: was nails and once again finding ways to get stops
- 9:57Speaker 2: on fourth down. Looking at this game overall, there was
- 10:01Speaker 2: three different drives where Arizona State would turn the ball
- 10:04Speaker 2: over on downs. One of those came on the Texas
- 10:07Speaker 2: two yard line. Now, of course, it did end up
- 10:09Speaker 2: resulting in Texas safety on the ensuing play, but this
- 10:14Speaker 2: Texas defensive line, game after game has figured out a
- 10:19Speaker 2: way to get goal line stops. And Steve's Oarkeisan was
- 10:22Speaker 2: asked about it, and here is his response.
- 10:27Speaker 3: Well, it's it's pretty incredible. You know, these guys do
- 10:31Speaker 3: such a good job of just saying, hey, protect the
- 10:34Speaker 3: end zone and if it's six inches, one yard, four
- 10:37Speaker 3: yards whatever, that looks like, you know, they're gonna they're
- 10:39Speaker 3: gonna stand in there. And I think it was there
- 10:41Speaker 3: were three or six in the red area tonight scoring
- 10:44Speaker 3: and that's you know, I think that's a byproduct of
- 10:47Speaker 3: them trusted one another and trusting the scheme. But I
- 10:49Speaker 3: think it's also a byproduct of guys understanding when it's
- 10:52Speaker 3: their time to make the play, they make the play.
- 10:55Speaker 3: They tackle ferociously. There's a lot of white hats getting
- 10:58Speaker 3: to the ball, and they may catches tough. You know,
- 11:02Speaker 3: they can test balls when they're thrown in the air.
- 11:04Speaker 3: And I think all those things showed.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Up tonight, and of course they got the stop that mattered,
- 11:09Speaker 2: that final third down interception Andrew mccooba picking off Sam
- 11:12Speaker 2: Levit the only Arizona State turnover in this game, I believe. Now,
- 11:17Speaker 2: of course there was three turnover rundowns with the only
- 11:19Speaker 2: interception or Fumbile coming to win the game Andrew Accuba
- 11:23Speaker 2: with the big playoff for Sam eleven. Update In the
- 11:26Speaker 2: All States Sugar Bowl between Notre Dame and Georgia, Georgia
- 11:30Speaker 2: would punt, but not after two two running into the
- 11:35Speaker 2: kicker penalties on Notre Dame. Talk about deja vu from yesterday.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Now on the fortunate side for Notre Dame, it was
- 11:41Speaker 2: fourth and twenty one, not fourth and four. So fourth
- 11:44Speaker 2: and twenty one, then fourth and sixteen, then fourth and eleven,
- 11:48Speaker 2: but Georgia would punt the ball away. Notre Dame would
- 11:50Speaker 2: end up punting it back and now Georgia has it
- 11:52Speaker 2: so still zero zero in the first quarter between Georgia
- 11:55Speaker 2: and Notre Dame. More than come from Steve Sarkis and
- 11:58Speaker 2: Quinn Yours, Joddy Baron and the act his football team
