- 0:25He rebuilds it and drives to free California with a teen's help agents
- 0:29dispatch a jet pilot to stop him.
- 0:31Fearing his autonomy.
- 0:32Threatens their control.
- 0:34Yeah.
- 0:36Yeah, that was wrong.
- 0:39Did we watch the same movie?
- 0:40That's the official read for this movie.
- 0:43That's lies.
- 0:44It was never confiscated.
- 0:45He hid it in his basement the whole time.
- 0:48I cannot fact check everything on IMDB.
- 0:51Okay.
- 0:52You were fact checking two lines also.
- 0:55I was told there would be no fact checking.
- 0:59That's super fun facts.
- 1:00That's your guys' job.
- 1:01I think he even said it an hour and 20 minutes into the movie.
- 1:05But yeah guys, oh, we are in the year of the apocalypse on our podcast.
- 1:11Everything I learned from movies, maybe you've heard of us.
- 1:14Wow.
- 1:15This is a perfect fit because we have apocalyptic, dystopian future.
- 1:22Yeah.
- 1:22We have cars, we have jets, lasers, Burgess, Meredith, like we are
- 1:28going full out for 1980 ones.
- 1:31The last Chase.
- 1:33Yes.
- 1:35Excellent.
- 1:36Oh, but babe, we're not alone for this one either.
- 1:38What do I need to put a bra on?
- 1:40Nah, we're, we're going without Sand's video on this one, but, uh oh.
- 1:45Thank God we have with us the Grand Touring Motor Sports Break Fix podcast.
- 1:49Welcome.
- 1:50Mm-hmm.
- 1:51We are excited to be back with you guys.
- 1:53And this is, like you said, Steve Special.
- 1:55This one has been hiding in the filing cabinet for quite a while.
- 1:59I'm looking forward to breaking this one down with you guys.
- 2:01And of course, the voices you're gonna be hearing.
- 2:02Sorry, I should have been more specific.
- 2:04We have Eric, Tanya, and Mountain Mike.
- 2:07I'm sorry.
- 2:07Mountain man.
- 2:07Dan, he is Forever Mountain Mike from now on.
- 2:13So what are you guys gonna hut down Mountain Mike's
- 2:14Pizza and try the mountain.
- 2:16Mike's Pizza.
- 2:16Dan, you've been spending a bunch of time out west.
- 2:19Have you gone to a Mountain Mike's yet?
- 2:20I have not seen one.
- 2:21I'm gonna have to try to find one.
- 2:22There's gotta be one in Colorado.
- 2:24Do it.
- 2:24I highly recommend the Everest.
- 2:27It is basically a mountain of meat and cheese on a pie, and it's delightful.
- 2:31I like it.
- 2:32I like it.
- 2:33So are we drinking tonight?
- 2:35Oh, of course we are.
- 2:36I don't know, Steve.
- 2:37I'm still sober.
- 2:38Well, let's see, from, uh, you went to brewing in Salt Lake City, Utah,
- 2:42we have their yard sale, winter lager, because we need to drink.
- 2:46We as we're in the heart of winter.
- 2:47Yeah.
- 2:49I don't know.
- 2:49It's snowed today.
- 2:51That is true.
- 2:51Welcome to Life on the Mountain.
- 2:53Oh, our tops.
- 2:55Nice.
- 2:56I'll see your beer and I'll raise you from the Highlands of Scotland.
- 2:59Ooh, the one and only Urn Brew.
- 3:03Caffeinated.
- 3:04Quain bubbly.
- 3:06It tastes weird, but it's good at the same time.
- 3:09I don't know.
- 3:09It's pretty awesome.
- 3:10I got this from an import store.
- 3:11I've had it before.
- 3:12If you've never had Iron Brew is another way to pronounce it.
- 3:14This stuff's pretty cool.
- 3:15It's pretty good because this is what Eric needs is more caffeine.
- 3:18A hundred percent.
- 3:19Oh my God.
- 3:20Yeah.
- 3:21A hundred percent caffeine.
- 3:23Watch this.
- 3:24Not stop at real time.
- 3:27Have those downers on standby.
- 3:28You know what it tastes like.
- 3:29You remember the Creamsicle Ddus from when we were kids?
- 3:33Yeah.
- 3:33This is that in liquid form with a ton of caffeine.
- 3:37Wow.
- 3:39Ooh, pardon me.
- 3:40Threw off in my mouth.
- 3:41Alright.
- 3:42Intrigued.
- 3:43I mean, as somebody who still drinks all of the Mountain Dew flavors.
- 3:45Yeah.
- 3:46Interested.
- 3:46Was it the, uh, Henry Wein hards or whatever orange sodas we love?
- 3:50Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:51Good stuff.
- 3:52How about you, Tony?
- 3:53Are you drinking sourced from a hundred to 500 feet below me?
- 3:57I come to you with dye hydrogen monoxide.
- 4:02She's got her own well or something out back.
- 4:05Apparently somebody should have warned me about this chair.
- 4:09It is lethal.
- 4:10Holy shit.
- 4:13Oh, I just figured out why it lost the wheel.
- 4:15Kind of like this movie.
- 4:17I have to stop on the side of the road and repair this thing really quick.
- 4:21What about Dan?
- 4:21What's he, oh man.
- 4:22Dan, how about you?
- 4:23Much like Tanya just drinking some odd oil.
- 4:25Mine's 350 feet below the house, so I know that for sure.
- 4:28So, yeah.
- 4:31Nice.
- 4:31Is this uh, your guys' first time watching this movie?
- 4:34I know it was for us, so yeah.
- 4:36Yes, it was not for me.
- 4:38This movie was recommended to me and I gotta give a shout out.
- 4:41To one of our friends, Scotty B, if you're listening, he sent
- 4:44me this movie a long time ago.
- 4:46You're gonna love it.
- 4:47It's got a car chase and it's got Lee majors and race cars and da da da da.
- 4:51And I'm like, okay.
- 4:52And I watched it and I'm not gonna say my opinion on it because that's
- 4:55what we're here to talk about.
- 4:56But I was delighted to revisit it with you guys again and get your perspective on it.
- 5:01'cause I have seen it before.
- 5:02You've watched it numerous times.
- 5:04This is your trading paint.
- 5:05No, no, no.
- 5:05We're not, no, we never, you never go trading paint.
- 5:07You never go full mountain Mike.
- 5:10Never go full trading paint.
- 5:11We need like the billboard of the movie so that we constantly
- 5:15reorder their goodness because you know, we'll get to it at the end.
- 5:19But I dare say this, this is still leagues above the stuntman.
- 5:22The poster's quite misleading.
- 5:25Like, I mean, there's some facts in there, but a lot of times like, wait, that, but
- 5:29that never really, so we'll get into it.
- 5:311980 one's.
- 5:32The last Chase, we watched it on the Blood bank.
- 5:35You may have to pirate this movie.
- 5:37It is not readily available or I guess it was on YouTube, right?
- 5:41Yes, it was.
- 5:42Oh, okay.
- 5:42It's on YouTube from time to time.
- 5:44But it's Steve, what's the blood bank?
- 5:45Oh, well, if you go to uh, patreon.com/bloody bits of the Bloody
- 5:49Bits Horror Show for $10 a month, you get access to A VPN that has thousands of hard
- 5:55to find obscure, mostly horror movies.
- 5:57But this wasn't a horror movie, but it was on there.
- 6:00Check it out.
- 6:02Oh, but this comes from writer director Martin Burke.
- 6:07Who's he?
- 6:07Steve.
- 6:08Oh, I'm glad you asked.
- 6:09You might know him from Carnivals 1973.
- 6:12No.
- 6:13How about the clown murders?
- 6:15I'll pass on that one.
- 6:16No.
- 6:16How about Power Play?
- 6:18No.
- 6:18No.
- 6:19It is a porn, I'm pretty sure.
- 6:20Right.
- 6:21This Pirates of Silicon Valley.
- 6:23Oh, I know that movie.
- 6:24Mm-hmm.
- 6:25That was like his next one.
- 6:26Avenging Angelo America.
- 6:28A Crossroads and Under Fire.
- 6:30Colon Journalists in Combat.
- 6:32I like that.
- 6:33You read the colon?
- 6:34Of course.
- 6:35Nope.
- 6:36Nope.
- 6:36And nope.
- 6:37This is my first movie by him.
- 6:39Yeah.
- 6:40Did we watch S of Silicon Valley?
- 6:42Is that the Yeah.
- 6:43One I'm thinking of.
- 6:43Okay.
- 6:44Yeah, that's the Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, dramatization.
- 6:47Anthony Michael Hall is one of 'em, right?
- 6:49Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:50Okay.
- 6:50There's that same one.
- 6:51One more before we get into the actors.
- 6:53We have to go to the screenwriter.
- 6:55Oh boy.
- 6:56Christopher Crow.
- 6:57Does that name sound familiar to anybody?
- 6:58It does sound familiar actually.
- 7:00Yeah.
- 7:00Who's he?
- 7:00Steve?
- 7:01Well, he has 20 plus credits, including three episodes of Beretta, nine episodes
- 7:05of the Hardy Boy slash Nancy Drew Mysteries, but he's the creator of.
- 7:10The misadventures of Sheriff Lobo, this BJ and the Bear Streets of Justice,
- 7:17BL Stryker, starring friend of the podcast, uh, William Shatner lasted
- 7:20The Mohicans The Untouchables TV series, the watcher TV series, fear.
- 7:25He skipped over Miami Vice.
- 7:27What?
- 7:27He did, Miami Vice An episode at least, I guess.
- 7:30Oh, an episode.
- 7:31Yeah.
- 7:31Yeah.
- 7:32But babe, he's also married to Christina Rains.
- 7:35Does that name sound familiar?
- 7:36Who's she?
- 7:37Steve.
- 7:38Remember the Sentinel?
- 7:39Yeah.
- 7:39The main model chick.
- 7:40That's her.
- 7:40She basically retired after marrying him.
- 7:43I mean, who would, oh, and the act, we lost another
- 7:46great actress from that movie.
- 7:48Not really.
- 7:49She basically spent the whole movie passing out.
- 7:51It was great.
- 7:52The other screenwriter, Roy Moore, he wrote Black Christmas
- 7:5610 episodes of The Adventures of Timothy Pilgrim, whatever that is.
- 7:59And then he gets credit on all the, uh, black Christmas remakes.
- 8:02That's about it.
- 8:03Oh, wow.
- 8:03Makes a lot of sense.
- 8:04Right.
- 8:04But our beloved eighties Action Hero though.
- 8:07Oh yes.
- 8:08The one, the only Lee Majors as Franklin Hart.
- 8:12Who's he?
- 8:13Steve, uh, let's see.
- 8:15Over 130 credits, including.
- 8:17The Virginian, he's Steve Austin from The $6 million Man.
- 8:21Uh, the Secret of Bigfoot Steal this.
- 8:24The Fall guy.
- 8:26Yeah, yeah.
- 8:29Scrooged Musketeers, forever Out.
- 8:31Cold, big Fat Liar.
- 8:33Eight episodes of Ash versus Evil Dead, A Gettysburg Christmas, and of course.
- 8:37The Fall guy, the movie from last year.
- 8:39You know what I appreciate, Steve, is out of 130 credits that Lee Majors
- 8:43has, you've listed Scrooge in there.
- 8:46He's in it for all of 45 seconds with that best one liner.
- 8:49You've been a good boy this year, Lee, but it's like epic, right?
- 8:53It sets the tone and I'm, I appreciate that you singled that out on the list.
- 8:57Steve only picks the most iconic moments in actors storied careers.
- 9:02I like to pick things.
- 9:03They've actually been seen in, you know, like the 15 seconds.
- 9:06He was in the fall guy last year and you know, Musketeers Forever, which I
- 9:12know we all have a DVD copy of, right?
- 9:14I mean, some of us do.
- 9:15It's on the shelf with my Sinbad movie.
- 9:18Yeah, it usually comes in one of those like 12 action movie packs or whatever.
- 9:24Also starring in this movie, of course, legend of Phil Man
- 9:27screen, Burgess Meredith has Captain JG Williams, who's he?
- 9:32Steve.
- 9:33Well, he has over 180 credits, but here are the ones you've actually
- 9:36seen him in Burned offerings.
- 9:38Yeah.
- 9:38Yeah.
- 9:39You know, he's Mickey in the first three Rocky movies and then like
- 9:42voice clips, the rest of them, the Sentinel popping up again.
- 9:45The Manitou Magic Guys, if you've not seen Magic, please, please go watch Magic.
- 9:52Anthony Hopkins is a ventriloquist who may or may not be insane
- 9:56and or have a possessed doll.
- 9:57And Burgess Meredith is his manager and Margaret's in it.
- 10:01Ugh, it's great.
- 10:02What else is he been in?
- 10:02A clash of the Titans, Santa Claus Colon.
- 10:05The movie Grumpy Old Man.
- 10:07Grumpy old man.
- 10:08And uh, of course he passed away in 1997.
- 10:10Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 10:11Did we skip the biggest thing, the most important thing about Burgess Meredith,
- 10:151966 to 67, whatever, he was the penguin.
- 10:20In Batman.
- 10:21In Batman.
- 10:22Yes.
- 10:22Yes, yes.
- 10:25How is it that in this movie, which took place 20 years later, let's just say,
- 10:30does he look younger in this than he did when he was the Penguin and Batman?
- 10:34Good makeup.
- 10:34Yeah.
- 10:35Makeup, yeah.
- 10:35When you have Lee Major's makeup team on, on your side.
- 10:41Oh, and uh, a couple.
- 10:42Just two more.
- 10:43Chris.
- 10:43Make peace as, I guess the kid's name was Ring.
- 10:46I never caught that in the movie.
- 10:48He had a name.
- 10:49I caught it at the end during the credits.
- 10:51That was us too.
- 10:52We were like, alright, what is the name of shit kid?
- 10:55I was like, wait, did the teacher say it earlier?
- 10:56Because I totally missed it.
- 10:58Like, oh, ring James, whatever his name is.
- 11:00I don't know.
- 11:01Could have been young.
- 11:01Egon Spangler was the same thing.
- 11:03Yeah, right.
- 11:0425 or so credits including meatballs.
- 11:08This Mazes and Monsters.
- 11:11Oh shit, y'all lost out last year.
- 11:13Falcon and the Snowman, and of course Izzy's favorite movie of all time Vamp.
- 11:18I do really like that movie.
- 11:20It's a rare movie where it starts out as a, uh, college comedy of
- 11:24like, oh man, get into this frat.
- 11:26We have to find a stripper by 8:00 PM but it's already five
- 11:30and town's two hours away.
- 11:31And then it becomes just like a bond girl eating people.
- 11:36It's Grace Jones starring in from Dusk till Dawn.
- 11:38It's great.
- 11:38Ah, okay.
- 11:39She has zero lines and is phenomenal the whole time.
- 11:44Wow.
- 11:44Yeah.
- 11:45Billy d Dragos in it.
- 11:46Check it out.
- 11:46Yeah.
- 11:46Guys, I, I really can't recommend this movie enough.
- 11:49Like I'm not even being sarcastic.
- 11:51It's just one of those things you have to sort of experience because it.
- 11:56So bonkers and it wildly shifts, tones, and yet somehow it just works.
- 12:01Does it involve a van?
- 12:05They, they, they borrowed Long Duck Don's, uh, drop top, tell, get to town.
- 12:09That's awesome.
- 12:10That's right.
- 12:10But on Van News guys, sorry Steve to break up this movie.
- 12:14Oh yeah.
- 12:15I bought a Ford Econo line 2008 Long Body Big Girl.
- 12:21You bought a church van?
- 12:22Yeah.
- 12:23For $400.
- 12:25No.
- 12:25That's awesome.
- 12:26Yeah, it did require a new transmission,
- 12:30but for four grand we basically have a van.
- 12:33Yes.
- 12:34Added a zero there.
- 12:35I heard.
- 12:36Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:37Basically.
- 12:38So did you name her?
- 12:39It's not Van Nessa.
- 12:40You didn't go that easy.
- 12:41Yeah, we definitely did.
- 12:43It's, it's Vanessa, Steve, what's her last name?
- 12:46Van Gogh.
- 12:47Oh, but it's the French spelling with the EAUX at the end.
- 12:50Oh, very nice.
- 12:52Very nice.
- 12:52We're classy.
- 12:53We classy bitches.
- 12:55Speaking of classy, Alexandra Stewart has Eudora.
- 12:58Who's she?
- 12:59Steve, 150 plus credits, but most of it's French stuff, so who gives a shit?
- 13:03But.
- 13:04Babe, she's been on the podcast before?
- 13:06No, she is Mrs. Sharon in Under the Cherry Moon.
- 13:11Oh.
- 13:12Oh man.
- 13:13And she's also Catherine Lagree in two episodes of Highlander.
- 13:17Ooh, okay.
- 13:18Oh my.
- 13:18Yeah.
- 13:19It's the season two unholy alliance, like the, uh, season finale there where
- 13:23McLeod confronts Joe Dawson about Horton.
- 13:25The man who killed Darius.
- 13:26Darius Darius then.
- 13:27Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, I remember that.
- 13:29And then follows the trail of Xavier St. Cloud to Paris.
- 13:32And of course, Xavier St. Cloud is played by the lead
- 13:34singer of fine young cannibals.
- 13:36Yeah.
- 13:38We're really doing a good job of procrastinating talking about this movie.
- 13:42We need to fill some time.
- 13:44She was the last one.
- 13:45It's so rare we have someone from under the Cherry Moon
- 13:47pop into one of our movies.
- 13:48It, it's true though.
- 13:49Alright, so we hit play.
- 13:50Oh my gosh.
- 13:51See a racetrack and we see a car sputter out because it ran out of gas.
- 13:56I, I'm assuming this was like a, like a test run or something?
- 13:59'cause the e the stands were all empty?
- 14:01No, this was already in Postapocalyptic or dystopian world.
- 14:05He took his, was it okay?
- 14:06He just took his race car out of the basement to go for a
- 14:10ride and then ran outta fuel.
- 14:12I'm imagine he bury it in the garage.
- 14:15I think it was still together at this point.
- 14:16Yeah.
- 14:17Yeah.
- 14:17Okay.
- 14:17Yeah, because I, I feel like this was like supposed to be, let's
- 14:20say the late eighties or whatever.
- 14:22What, uh, as we find out, they say there's no more oil.
- 14:26Like it was a beautifully upkept racetrack.
- 14:28If it's been sitting around for the last five or six years,
- 14:30I'm also gonna argue all of the blacktops than this our pristine.
- 14:34Yeah.
- 14:34Mm-hmm.
- 14:35And I do believe you need oil and petroleum to make asphalt.
- 14:39I mean, I might be wrong.
- 14:40I've been known to be wrong before.
- 14:42You are correct.
- 14:43Now, I did try to pinpoint which racetrack it was, and I did not do
- 14:48a very good job of finding a result.
- 14:49But based on the fact that the movie was filmed in Canada, it has to be
- 14:53one of the Canadian racetracks, even one of the smaller ones up in the
- 14:57Ontario area of that time period.
- 15:00There's not many that exist anymore other than like Mosport, which
- 15:03is now Canadian Tire Motor Park.
- 15:04It wasn't filled in Canada at all.
- 15:05It says at the end that it was, I also read that it was filmed
- 15:08in like Flagstaff, in Sedona and probably for the airplane scenes.
- 15:13Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 15:14Definitely.
- 15:14Definitely.
- 15:15Anytime there's an airplane involved.
- 15:16Yeah.
- 15:17Clearly, because that looked very not Canadian.
- 15:21Yeah, they're talking about like West Pennsylvania, that it's like showing
- 15:23Southern Utah for what it looks like.
- 15:25This like, yeah, but, well, where are they now then?
- 15:27It's in the, uh, the after after time.
- 15:29Yeah.
- 15:30Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 15:31Ohio's a wasteland at this point.
- 15:33You know what, it's moss port.
- 15:35It is Mosport.
- 15:36Okay.
- 15:37Just found it.
- 15:37Oh, gene Heckman's down the street from that angle.
- 15:40I didn't recognize it.
- 15:41'cause most ports really long as a track, so they only used one section of it then.
- 15:46Very cool.
- 15:46And then we also get, I swear, a solid minute of ominous music staring
- 15:50at a gas pump product placement.
- 15:52Okay.
- 15:52I guess that was an Exxon commercial.
- 15:55That's what that was, but it was ominous, so it wasn't like a good Exxon commercial.
- 15:59Yeah, maybe it's paid for by Shell.
- 16:03Oh wait, no.
- 16:03A shell station gets blown up later in the movie too.
- 16:06Yeah.
- 16:06Maybe this is paid for by the electric car.
- 16:09It's very much like looking at the gas pump, like this is why there is no future.
- 16:14I just like the fact that he can cut open an Exxon gas pump with a set of tin snips.
- 16:19It just baffled me like.
- 16:20Cut through the outer wall.
- 16:22That made sense to me.
- 16:23But when he knocks it over to the side and like the pipe inside and
- 16:26everything just falls over with it.
- 16:28Nothing was connected.
- 16:29Yeah.
- 16:29Oh, I'm sorry.
- 16:30The $6 million, man, knocking out a gas pump was confusing.
- 16:34And then suddenly he had like a siphoning device and he's like,
- 16:36squish, squish, squish, squish.
- 16:38Like what?
- 16:39He had it in the back of his car.
- 16:40I guess.
- 16:40I don't, some people keep, you know, jumper cables and the professionals
- 16:44keep the little siphon ready to go.
- 16:46So we go from his lone track day, you know, stealing gas from underground,
- 16:51which actually is foreshadowing for later in the movie as we come to find out into
- 16:54this very long exposition monologue of just Lee Majors talking for like the
- 17:00next, what seems like forever about what's going on and did anybody really understand
- 17:05other than there was a disease and there was a pandemic that killed everybody.
- 17:10Yeah, an epidemic, a plague that killed his wife and son.
- 17:15And then of course that led to gas, not existing anymore.
- 17:19Hi.
- 17:20His buddy fetch kind of filled us in.
- 17:22You know what's sad?
- 17:23I literally watched this movie three hours ago.
- 17:25Like I started it at like five and I already can't remember what happened.
- 17:30I, I do like during his thing, he was like, I like to help out at
- 17:33the hospital from time to time.
- 17:35Of course, I don't wear a mask 'cause why the fuck would I
- 17:38do that during a, an epidemic?
- 17:40I'll be all right.
- 17:40I'm Lee fucking majors, I'm half robot.
- 17:42But then cars are outlawed, but they're not.
- 17:46But I was so confused.
- 17:48Like all transportation is like gone because.
- 17:51I don't know.
- 17:52That was polluting the earth also.
- 17:55I didn't get it.
- 17:56And this disease too, it could be a form of Legionnaire's disease,
- 17:59it could be chemical warfare.
- 18:01I don't know.
- 18:01Fake news.
- 18:05There's so much foreshadowing.
- 18:06Yeah.
- 18:07Yeah.
- 18:07From 1981, the first part of this movie, I'm like, oh my
- 18:10God, had we not see it coming?
- 18:12But he was like, well, he just kinda learned to live with the panic and
- 18:15the fear and until it becomes normal.
- 18:17And I'm like, fuck.
- 18:19All right.
- 18:20Okay, so this is where two things I kind of wanna diverge on.
- 18:24One is super fun.
- 18:25Carfax, maybe I can save that for later if you want, but you
- 18:28guys just hit on something.
- 18:29We're talking about 1981.
- 18:30We're talking about foreshadowing, you know, things that happened
- 18:32only just a couple years ago.
- 18:34Really.
- 18:34The film felt older than it was, and I wanted to ask you, Steve, and if
- 18:39I'm spoiling one of your fun facts, is this like the stunt man where it
- 18:43took this guy 10 years to make this movie happen because it feels like a
- 18:48seventies film and not an eighties film.
- 18:50There's just something off about the whole thing.
- 18:53I don't think I have anything in the fun facts about it.
- 18:55Like, you know, sitting on somebody, was it Christopher Crow's?
- 18:59You know, like, oh, I gotta make like 15 TV shows.
- 19:01Then I can make a movie.
- 19:02It releasing in 81.
- 19:04It's.
- 19:04Conceivable that he started making it obviously in the seventies or at
- 19:08least the thought process was, and with the oil thing they'd just gone
- 19:11through not even a decade before the whole gas crisis in the US Right.
- 19:16So like they're probably pulling strings from that because I think now I remember
- 19:20the thing with the cars, they were trying to preemptively stop some bigger
- 19:24crisis that they assumed was gonna happen with like people's use of planes
- 19:28and boats and cars and all this stuff.
- 19:30So they out like outlawed it all and rocket ships and makes no sense.
- 19:35And the reason I bring that up is because the car itself, when I started
- 19:39digging into its fun facts is from 1972, it sort of triggered this,
- 19:43when was this film actually made?
- 19:46Because that car looked super new and very futuristic compared to the Grand
- 19:50Marquee with the Woody Family Truckster thing that he was driving around to go
- 19:54help the medical people or whatever.
- 19:55And I was like, okay.
- 19:57And then I dug into the car a little bit and we can talk about that later.
- 19:59But that was my pinpoint to say this movie feels like it's off by 10 years.
- 20:04And, and the thing that got me the most is 'cause like basically after
- 20:07the scene we cut to 20 years later and I think it's supposed to be
- 20:112010 or 2011 or something like that.
- 20:14Yeah.
- 20:14Like, you know, in the future, oh, I missed that.
- 20:162011. Oh, okay.
- 20:17Yeah.
- 20:17It's what takes place at 2011.
- 20:19And the pandemic thing was 20 years before that.
- 20:22Yeah.
- 20:22Yeah.
- 20:22So it's 20 years later.
- 20:23'cause now Lee Majors doesn't have as much makeup on.
- 20:26He looks a little more Lee Majorish and uh, he's taking
- 20:29the subway to work and all that.
- 20:30Yeah.
- 20:31So the pandemic broke out in 1991, but I think he stopped racing from
- 20:35what you learned later before that.
- 20:37But that would still maybe have put him stopping racing in the eighties.
- 20:40So that's still the eighties.
- 20:40A decade, yeah, after that car came out.
- 20:43So who knows?
- 20:44So you talked about Lee Major's makeup, what do you call his hairdo?
- 20:46Was that a perm or is that like a fro Like what was that?
- 20:50The shatner.
- 20:51The sha.
- 20:52Oh shit.
- 20:53This chair,
- 20:56Eric.
- 20:56Don't gimme a goal of making you fall out of your chair.
- 20:58Legitimately.
- 20:59I have to sit up straight or I'm gonna die in this chair.
- 21:03This is like that episode where the spider came in.
- 21:06Remember?
- 21:06It was Oh yeah.
- 21:08Like, well, Eric's fighting ghosts now.
- 21:11This chair is brutal.
- 21:12So talking about other old stuff at this point, after the whole
- 21:16car thing and cutting open the gas pump, we cut to the computer room.
- 21:19No.
- 21:20No, we watch him tow that thing home.
- 21:23No, we learn about how it's this police state that it's turned into with cameras
- 21:28everywhere and cars are outlawed.
- 21:30The M fers going down the road in this big ass wagon with a trailer with a
- 21:35bright orange race car on it going down the highway and nobody knows.
- 21:39He has this secret car hidden in his basement.
- 21:42What?
- 21:42Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 21:45See Tanya gets it, his boldness of it when he goes to help out at the like
- 21:48hospital or whatever, he drives right up and the guy's like, Hey, this was supposed
- 21:52to be turned into the impound water.
- 21:54Yeah.
- 21:54And then he just gets out and it's like, so was it gone now?
- 21:57Okay, cool.
- 21:59He lived in the middle of nowhere.
- 22:00How is he getting to work every day?
- 22:02Bicycle.
- 22:02Well, you know, the amount of time it used to take to go from A to
- 22:06Z is the time it now takes to go to A to B or whatever the heck.
- 22:09He's speech he made.
- 22:11Yeah, he brings that up later.
- 22:13Yeah.
- 22:13He wasn't complaining.
- 22:15He's like trying to explain cars to a kid and that's what he pulls out and I'm like,
- 22:18oh god dammit, Lee, or what's his name?
- 22:21Frank Hart.
- 22:22Frank Hart?
- 22:23Yeah.
- 22:23Yeah.
- 22:23So he works at the Department of Transportation.
- 22:25That's what I'm getting to.
- 22:26Is this computer room at the DOT?
- 22:28Yes.
- 22:28He's the spokesperson for the Mass Transit Authority.
- 22:32Yeah.
- 22:32And he pops up like he works in the fucking Trump administration.
- 22:36Just like, yeah.
- 22:37So, uh, yeah, he used to be a race car driver.
- 22:40And uh, now they want me to talk about how, uh, riding bikes is cool as shit.
- 22:44Yeah.
- 22:45Any questions?
- 22:46No.
- 22:47You guys don't even know what a race car is.
- 22:49What are you kids that have never seen such a thing?
- 22:52I wish I had a PowerPoint presentation.
- 22:54I could give, eh, you know what?
- 22:56Next scene.
- 22:57And see I got from that scene, I got more of the Simpsons.
- 23:00Hi, I'm Tom Hanks.
- 23:01Government's lost all credibility.
- 23:03So the borrowing, some of mine tole my hair, Mr. Hanks.
- 23:06Okay.
- 23:09Oh.
- 23:11So this computer room master control, like a scene outta Tron.
- 23:15I was waiting for Sark to come out or something, but what got me again, talking
- 23:19about this movie feels really outta place.
- 23:21Did you all get the same vibe?
- 23:23I did.
- 23:24When you first saw the computer room, it was like this marriage
- 23:27between Willy Wonka and Dr.
- 23:30Strange love.
- 23:30It was totally strange.
- 23:31Love.
- 23:32Yeah, yeah, yeah, right.
- 23:33Boop boop.
- 23:34Well, and here's the best thing, like what?
- 23:35Two people run that whole thing and it's like.
- 23:38This cavernous cineplex of beeps and boops all over in a giant fucking screen.
- 23:44Like if this were the taking a poem, 1, 2, 3, there'd be 40 people from the Bronx
- 23:48running all the levers and shit in there.
- 23:50But no, if there's just one balding guy and some chick observing him, the great
- 23:54thing is the one guy that's running it sits in the center and there's no
- 23:56access point for him to get in or out.
- 23:58Yeah.
- 23:59I assume he just jumps in and jumps out like the Dukes of hazard, right?
- 24:02Yeah.
- 24:03But I was also thinking, what is Robert Vaughn gonna show up in like a tower,
- 24:07like in Superman two looking down and then suddenly Richard Pryor runs in
- 24:10from the side, or I'm not with them.
- 24:12Superman.
- 24:13Oh, so cliche.
- 24:14The lady in this room apparently pulls the spokesperson aside and is like,
- 24:18Mr. Hart, we've got you on videotape going to one of the confiscation yards.
- 24:23We used to call 'em a junkyard back in my day.
- 24:25Like, yeah, same thing.
- 24:26Confiscation yard is what we call it.
- 24:28Sir, looking into your record.
- 24:29I understand you quit racing cars after a crash where you killed
- 24:32someone back in the eighties.
- 24:34And he's like, Uhhuh.
- 24:36Yeah.
- 24:36Thanks for filling in the explanation so I don't have to, what are we doing here?
- 24:39When do we talk about that flashback scene?
- 24:42That was real footage.
- 24:43That was Andretti in that Lotus, by the way, the Formula one cars,
- 24:46they're talking right, and they're like, and he lost it in the corner.
- 24:51They're on a straight uhhuh.
- 24:54They're on a straight, but they lost it in the corner.
- 24:58What corner?
- 24:59And then flipped like eight or nine times and ended up in the straight.
- 25:02It's like being drunk in public.
- 25:04I wasn't drunk until you put me in public.
- 25:06Right?
- 25:08This exposition dump is nice and all.
- 25:10So then we cut to a nerd and an attic hacking the government.
- 25:15It's like the Goonies.
- 25:16Meanwhile, in war games, like, what the fuck are we doing?
- 25:19A young Neil Breen is getting his first taste of the internet
- 25:23hacking all the government secrets.
- 25:25This is where we get introduced to radio free California.
- 25:29The rebel state?
- 25:30Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 25:32They do the interruption of the, like when he goes home.
- 25:34Because, 'cause he, they're talking about sending him to rehab center,
- 25:36like you mean jail rehab center.
- 25:39We're gonna deport El Salvador.
- 25:40It's perfectly fine.
- 25:42Fucking does.
- 25:43Is it too soon or is it too late?
- 25:45Uh, so yeah, so he is at home watching the replay of the crash for whatever reason.
- 25:50I think he likes to watch his wife crying or something.
- 25:54That's, that's how he goes to bed every night, I assume.
- 25:57Usually in this scene, like you have someone like looking at their wedding
- 26:00footage or something like that.
- 26:02'cause anyone has ever done that in the history of forever and no, no one.
- 26:06All right, but yeah, he is watching like the crash and his wife's
- 26:10like, oh my God, is everybody okay?
- 26:13God so terrible.
- 26:15Oh, and yeah, this is when his replays interrupted by, hello everybody.
- 26:19Uh, this is free California.
- 26:22San Francisco has returned to machines and we have our land back and we're not
- 26:26under the government's thumb, so please come on out here and blah, blah, blah.
- 26:30Then they lose the signal, like it's very, they live kind of vibes like, you know.
- 26:34Yeah.
- 26:35Obey, put on the glasses that that'd have been great actually.
- 26:39So this is where we also learned that the car was disassembled
- 26:42and buried underground.
- 26:44Right.
- 26:44Because he's gotten the notion that now he wants to go to California.
- 26:48He wants to break away from the monotony of his Department of Transportation life
- 26:52and everything that's oppressing him.
- 26:54And I think he's in New England.
- 26:55I heard Boston, I think.
- 26:57Yeah.
- 26:57Yeah.
- 26:57I think he's in Boston.
- 26:58Yeah.
- 26:59Yeah.
- 26:59Yeah.
- 26:59So he starts digging in his garage like someone killed his
- 27:02fucking dog and he needs his guns.
- 27:04John Wick referenced.
- 27:05Yeah.
- 27:05But during this rebuild montage that happens over the course of 15 minutes,
- 27:10it feels like in the film there's also that moment where his coworker's
- 27:14like, we'll just call him Lee.
- 27:15He's like, Hey, come on Lee.
- 27:16We're going to the bar.
- 27:17You're coming out to the bar with me.
- 27:19Right?
- 27:20And I was like, did anybody else feel like we suddenly stepped into a Kubrick film?
- 27:24Oh, totally.
- 27:25What was going on in this bar?
- 27:27So his buddy slash speech writer, whatever, walking to the bar where the
- 27:31walls are covered in aluminum foil.
- 27:33And I'm like the future.
- 27:35But then, uh, you know, they go in a back room and Oops.
- 27:38Orgy, oops.
- 27:39And, and apparently in the original version there was a lot more
- 27:42nudity and stuff in this scene.
- 27:44Like an extra minute, minute and a half, something like that.
- 27:46I think I read somewhere.
- 27:47Yeah.
- 27:48Out of fucking nowhere in this movie, like.
- 27:51But the next day he's uh, you know, talking to kids again, you
- 27:54know, in his spokesperson role.
- 27:55We know one of the kids is the nerd that was hacking the
- 27:57government secrets earlier.
- 27:59He starts going off script and he is like, yeah.
- 28:01So, uh, you know, normally I get up here, tell him a race car driver and
- 28:05how not having cars is great and great for the environment and great for,
- 28:08you know, your duty to your country.
- 28:09But, uh, it's all bullshit.
- 28:11It's all rules and guilt.
- 28:13And guys think for yourselves and of course the one nerd kid
- 28:16gets up like starts clapping.
- 28:18Yeah.
- 28:18Everybody else is a dead silent.
- 28:21Yeah.
- 28:21Like think for ourselves, was it just me or did they all look
- 28:24like they were from Hogwarts?
- 28:26Very Harry Potter vibes.
- 28:28Yeah.
- 28:28Yeah.
- 28:29JK rolling.
- 28:30You hack.
- 28:31They hint at the fact it's like a prep school that a kid got sent to,
- 28:34I guess to try to straighten him out.
- 28:36'cause Yeah, he's.
- 28:37Rebellious what they try to hand at, but he didn't seem it.
- 28:40He's one of them free thinkers and so you know, the jocks slash other nerds
- 28:44have to like beat him up and like hang him from a statue upside down.
- 28:48Oh wait, he did that himself.
- 28:50All right, nevermind.
- 28:51I wish I could do the carradine laugh, right?
- 28:53You're talking about revenge of the nerd deck.
- 28:56I've never seen that movie.
- 28:57Is it good?
- 28:58No.
- 28:58I've literally seen it a thousand times as a 5-year-old.
- 29:01It shaped who I am to this very day.
- 29:02Yeah, especially the second one.
- 29:05Nah, nerd's and Paradise isn't my bag.
- 29:08Oh yeah.
- 29:08And also his, uh, speech writer buddy basically says like,
- 29:10look dude, you're an idiot.
- 29:12You're gonna get fired.
- 29:13I don't know what they're gonna do with you if they don't have a use for you.
- 29:16You're over 40.
- 29:17We're in like the Logan's run timeframe or something.
- 29:20Oh yeah.
- 29:20We see the kid, they set up for like a class photo and he blows the head off
- 29:23the statue as they're taking the photo.
- 29:26That was awesome.
- 29:26Great stuff.
- 29:27What's the next thing that actually happens?
- 29:29Uh oh Yeah.
- 29:29He sends a message to Hart like an email.
- 29:32But you know, it's one of those early eighties emails on a matrix printer.
- 29:37Yeah, you are not alone.
- 29:41And I was expecting heart to be like, be looking around like he's all listen sudden
- 29:44transporting to like black Christmas.
- 29:46Like the call is coming from inside the house.
- 29:48By the way, kids today will never know the joy of peeling the
- 29:53edges off the dot matrix paper.
- 29:55Oh.
- 29:55And folding it into little accordions.
- 29:57Right.
- 29:57And then just like seeing how long you can like stretch that a hundred percent.
- 30:03Simple joys is these simple joys.
- 30:05So the next day, Hart gets a memo and he is basically like,
- 30:08yeah, you've been suspended.
- 30:09Probably gonna go to jail.
- 30:10So then the police golf carts show up at the school.
- 30:13Oh my God.
- 30:14These are the funniest recurring jokes in the whole film.
- 30:17Like every time I saw these, what looked like they were reused for
- 30:21Johnny Cabs later in total recall, I just kept cracking up because
- 30:25they're like cyber police vehicles.
- 30:27Like Tesla designed these things, right?
- 30:28Yeah.
- 30:28I mean, that's what they look like and I'm just cracking up the whole time.
- 30:31Like, this is so hitting close to home.
- 30:34They didn't even know what they were doing, you know, 44 years ago now.
- 30:38This is incredible stuff.
- 30:39But yeah, they're tracking the, this signal that apparently
- 30:42this kid sending out, you know, hacking the government secrets.
- 30:45But then it's like, wait, why are they outside of Hart's house?
- 30:48And then we see Hardee's inside, you know, sipping his
- 30:51whiskey whatever for the night.
- 30:52And then you hear someone like break in through the front door and I'm like, well,
- 30:56illegal search and seizure right there.
- 30:59Oh no, it's just the kid.
- 31:00And he is like, Hey, the cops are following me.
- 31:02Can I hide here for the team?
- 31:03He is like, what?
- 31:04And knock, knock, knock.
- 31:05Who is it?
- 31:07And the part about that, that, you know, they found the signal emanating from Lee
- 31:10Majors house, Frank's house or whatever.
- 31:12And I kept thinking, this is the moment this kid is gonna open his
- 31:16jacket up, like data from the Goonies and he's gonna be wired up with
- 31:19electronics and he's carrying around some mobile emitter or something.
- 31:22And it was like totally benign.
- 31:24It was, it was such a big plot hole that they found him in the first
- 31:27place was emanating from the school.
- 31:30Because the one teacher's like, what?
- 31:32There nothing like that could be here.
- 31:33When they were going up steps and the cop popped his head up into the
- 31:36attic where the equipment was at, I think they were following the kid
- 31:39and he went running that direction.
- 31:40That's why they just stopped at the house and hey you, oh, that makes
- 31:43more sense because I thought for about three seconds he was living in Lee
- 31:46Major's fucking attic for a second.
- 31:48Like wait.
- 31:50This whole time when the kid gets there and he breaks the window,
- 31:53the cop comes up to the front door.
- 31:54Wouldn't you notice broken glass?
- 31:56Yes.
- 31:56There was no broken glass.
- 31:58And that's where I'm like, fire that gaff guy.
- 31:59You know the, they added the scene later.
- 32:02They had to fire the sound effect.
- 32:04Like during that scene, while the cops are talking to him, you see
- 32:07Lee major looking off to the side.
- 32:09Mm-hmm.
- 32:09And any normal circumstance that I would imagine if a cop is there and
- 32:14someone's looking off to the side and you can obvious movement from the
- 32:17lighting when the kid opens the door to the garage, I think a cop would be
- 32:19like, well, what's going on in there?
- 32:21Outta curiosity, but they didn't seem to care at all.
- 32:23And then a kid goes in and sees the race car just snowballs from there.
- 32:26Yeah, it does.
- 32:26And he adds the, uh, horse racer for what, 1972.
- 32:30Like Eric was saying.
- 32:31Whoa, wait, I got, I gotta interject.
- 32:33If we expect anything more from these Keystone COP characters,
- 32:40they're not coming back later in the movie.
- 32:41Dang.
- 32:42Nope.
- 32:42Not at all.
- 32:43But the, the kid's like, Hey, you, uh, you going to California?
- 32:47Uh, no.
- 32:48Why?
- 32:48Why would you think that?
- 32:49No, I'm totally going to California.
- 32:51Can I come with, I don't know, man, that's kind of weird going on a Smokey
- 32:55and the Bandit run on roads that haven't been used in 25 years and it's okay.
- 33:00I got chemicals and like electronics and stuff like, well, shit, I don't know.
- 33:04Hop in shotgun.
- 33:05Let's go.
- 33:06Hold on, let me change my outfit.
- 33:07Puts on his racing suit.
- 33:09Hell yeah.
- 33:10What?
- 33:10Yeah, less drag that way.
- 33:11And the kid, no helmet, but he's got his helmet and he's got his racing suit on.
- 33:15Yeah.
- 33:15How did he blow the garage door up?
- 33:17When did he have time to rig the garage with explosives?
- 33:19When he was hiding from the cop?
- 33:21Yeah.
- 33:21Did I miss the scene?
- 33:23No, no, no.
- 33:24We just assumed that in the eight seconds it took Lee Majors
- 33:27to be like, Nope, no kids here.
- 33:30I guess he was already rigging a plan B into the garage door.
- 33:33Oh, okay.
- 33:33Again, if this was the Goonies data would've hit a button on
- 33:37the box and it would've shot out and attached to the door.
- 33:40I, I can totally see a scene where this kid's like in the garage, like
- 33:42this motherfucker narks on him.
- 33:43I'm gonna blow up his whole goddamn house.
- 33:46Yeah, it said they, uh, you know, they get in the car.
- 33:49Keystone cops are back.
- 33:50So, uh, your neighbor said a kid was just here, like, or No.
- 33:54Was the, was it security people that like told 'em?
- 33:56Yeah, like, yeah.
- 33:56Yeah.
- 33:57That have similar golf carts to the police.
- 33:59They hop in the car, blow the garage door and you're like, take me with you.
- 34:02Okay, cool.
- 34:03Get in.
- 34:05Well real quick, what?
- 34:05The garage door blowing.
- 34:06I'm amazed with the 30 seconds.
- 34:08The kid was standing there looking in.
- 34:10He managed to put whatever this goo is all over the garage door to lock it shut.
- 34:14It's explosive, Mike.
- 34:15That's impressive.
- 34:16This kid's ability, he's a genius.
- 34:17He's Batman, he's race or whatever his name is.
- 34:21Ring, ring, ring.
- 34:22Like the doorbell.
- 34:23Yeah, ring.
- 34:23Yeah.
- 34:24It's one of those.
- 34:25Yeah.
- 34:25So you know how I'm sensitive to car sound effects, right?
- 34:29We've talked about this.
- 34:30Yeah.
- 34:30Never forget, right.
- 34:31And this will go into my super fun fact about the car when he fires it up.
- 34:34That is the sound, actual sound of a Porsche flat six idling.
- 34:39And it sounds so good 'cause it's straight piped and it's amazing
- 34:43what they use for the action scenes.
- 34:46Is not quite right and I don't know why they did that, because
- 34:49that car is so naturally loud.
- 34:51It just, to me, it didn't make sense.
- 34:52But I was really impressed.
- 34:53I was like, when he fires it up and it's idling and they're dying
- 34:56from carbon monoxide in that scene.
- 34:58Yeah.
- 34:58I was like, that's the real thing right there.
- 35:00That's awesome.
- 35:00I have a fun fact about the car that I found.
- 35:03I have some fun facts too.
- 35:04I'll interject it at the appropriate time, I suppose.
- 35:07Alright, we're gonna have a lot of fun Facts.
- 35:09Good, because I don't, I don't think I have that many.
- 35:11So, yeah, they drive off and you know, the kid holds like the million candle power
- 35:15flashlight or whatever to do you remember those flashlights from the eighties?
- 35:19They sucked.
- 35:20It was barely enough to light the top of the hood in front of the, the lights.
- 35:24Yeah.
- 35:25And it only took like 18 D cell batteries and you know, and you're plug it into
- 35:29the cigarette lighter in my race car.
- 35:31Like what?
- 35:33Like, okay.
- 35:34I love the fact that there just happened to be a passenger seat in it as well.
- 35:36Yeah.
- 35:36But then they, uh, they take the tunnel outta town, but, oh no.
- 35:40There's a roadblock.
- 35:40How are we gonna get out of this one?
- 35:42Hard pull to the right, explodes against the wall roll credits.
- 35:45Guys.
- 35:45What do we think of?
- 35:47Chase.
- 35:48At first I thought, I was like, did he just u-turn in?
- 35:51Like 'cause you couldn't see anything.
- 35:53Yeah.
- 35:53I was like, did he just like do a 180 in this tunnel?
- 35:56He is gonna drive back the other way and then all you see is noise and blackness
- 35:59says, oh, we made a a right turn in the middle of the straight tunnel.
- 36:02Really?
- 36:02What tunnel does that?
- 36:04The big dig does that, I'm assuming this would be like an
- 36:06older tunnel for water stuff.
- 36:08'cause I do like have it where it'll shoot off at a 45 degree angle.
- 36:12A lot of older tunnels and especially like older places like London
- 36:15that had tunnels underground.
- 36:16Yeah.
- 36:16We weren't in London, but I know we're not, but we're in New London.
- 36:20AKA Boston.
- 36:21We're in Canada, folks.
- 36:23Flagstaff, it was Looney Tunes.
- 36:26It was straight up Looney Tunes.
- 36:27Yeah.
- 36:27Oh, when he popped out the sign, it was Smokey the Bear.
- 36:30Yeah, yeah.
- 36:31Pop out the smokey poster, and I thought it was weird.
- 36:34Earlier in the movie, he made a Smokey The Bear reference.
- 36:36Yeah.
- 36:36He said, I, I got a friend in Smokey The Bear or something.
- 36:40You're like, what?
- 36:41Yeah, I got a friend that's gonna help me out here.
- 36:43Who is it?
- 36:43Smokey The Bear.
- 36:45Okay.
- 36:45Old man.
- 36:45Whatever you say.
- 36:46Okay, boomer.
- 36:50Yeah.
- 36:50Then we're uh, driving in the autumn in New England.
- 36:53So we see the leaves falling and they're going upwards of a hundred miles an hour.
- 36:59No, not really.
- 37:00But then guys at the security council from Dr.
- 37:03Strangelove or whatever they call in Hawkins from dc.
- 37:06This guy, I guess he just kind of shows up and he is like, well, what's going on?
- 37:10Like, oh yeah, he is going 130 miles an hour on this brand new road he's driving
- 37:15on that hasn't been used in 25 years.
- 37:17How are they tracking his speed?
- 37:19Exactly.
- 37:19That's what I wanted to, because they have cameras out the middle of the woods.
- 37:22Oh, okay.
- 37:22You didn't realize that?
- 37:23Oh yeah.
- 37:24Okay, got it.
- 37:25You're reading the script.
- 37:27That's how they're doing it.
- 37:31But, uh, but then, uh, I was like, uh, he just gotta run outta gas any minute now.
- 37:35And then kins is like, well, there's a few inches of gas they can siphon every
- 37:41pump, every gas station in America.
- 37:42And I'm like, still, really?
- 37:44No one's done this in 30 years.
- 37:45Okay.
- 37:46It gets go bad for like 18 months or something.
- 37:48Also that.
- 37:49I mean, after 20 years, it might be suspect 25 years.
- 37:53It might be turpentine at that point.
- 37:54Yeah.
- 37:55Yeah.
- 37:55I mean, turpentine does burn.
- 37:57So it's a race car could run on anything.
- 37:59Exactly.
- 38:00This was probably fuel which would last a little longer than the new ethanol fuel.
- 38:04So, oh, here we go.
- 38:08Back in my day, we ran the cars on shine.
- 38:12Look, my parents have this story about now they're divorced, but when, uh, when
- 38:15they got married for their honeymoon, they took their, uh, CJ four out to the middle
- 38:19of the BlackRock Desert in the middle, in the seventies, and were camping.
- 38:23And my dad did not notice that the fender had rubbed a hole
- 38:25in the gas tank on the Jeep.
- 38:27So they're in the middle of the desert, like 30 miles from
- 38:30any civilization with no gas.
- 38:33My dad didn't know about the hole yet.
- 38:34He was just like, why are we outta gas?
- 38:36So he dumped all of their lantern fuel into the Jeep and apparently
- 38:40they just blasted right into town.
- 38:42And they pulled up to the gas station like puck.
- 38:44It a puck it up.
- 38:45My dad started filling it up.
- 38:46My mom went to the bathroom.
- 38:47She came out, gas was just pouring outta the back of the Jeep.
- 38:50They ran into the bathroom and got the bar of soap, rubbed the bar of soap over
- 38:54the hole in the gas tank to plug it.
- 38:56Finished their honeymoon and apparently my dad did fix it for
- 38:59three or four more, uh, Jeep runs.
- 39:01That's some good soap.
- 39:02I do not recommend you do this at home.
- 39:04These are also the people who, when my radiator had a hole in it in my
- 39:071975 Ford Micro pickup, they said just put some uh, raw eggs in the radiator
- 39:12every so often and drive it around.
- 39:14The eggs will cook in the radiator and get stuck in the hole.
- 39:17And it does work, but I don't recommend it for months on end.
- 39:20Wow.
- 39:21It works until it works too well and close up the passage and overheats the motor.
- 39:25I mean, it's a 1975 Ford Courier that ran on three cylinders.
- 39:28That was not its biggest problem.
- 39:30That's 'cause the fourth one was full of eggs.
- 39:32But you know, we'll just leave that way.
- 39:33Eggs probably.
- 39:34It's poaching the shit outta those eggs.
- 39:36Hey, the truck was free from a crazy hippie.
- 39:38So you're starting to establish a pattern for us, Izzy.
- 39:40That's all I'm saying.
- 39:41Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 39:42Then I like to buy shitty old cars and drive them around.
- 39:45Yes.
- 39:46And you guys are wondering, Hmm?
- 39:47I wonder if I bought a car from Izzy's dad.
- 39:50No, no, no.
- 39:51My dad runs them to the ground.
- 39:52Yeah.
- 39:52See there's dozens of you out there.
- 39:54I'm sure.
- 39:54Probably lost it in a poker game or something.
- 39:57No, no, no.
- 39:57My dad has never sold a car, sold a car.
- 39:59He's taken people's money, but they've never actually ended up with the car.
- 40:02So my apologies if my dad owes any of you any money.
- 40:05There's only like a 20% chance.
- 40:09So then, uh, speaking of free California, we start getting a signal or we started
- 40:13like hearing on the radio and they're like, alright, we're getting reports
- 40:16of a car on its way to California.
- 40:18But it, you know, shows them like stuck in the mud.
- 40:20So this is vanishing point.
- 40:22The same thing, right?
- 40:23And I'm like, oh my God, here we go.
- 40:25Stuck in the rain scene too.
- 40:27I was just like, oh man, this is pathetic.
- 40:29But this is the fun part.
- 40:30We cut back to DOT headquarters.
- 40:34The penguin shows up for the first time, right?
- 40:36Eh?
- 40:37Yeah.
- 40:38Yeah.
- 40:38We see like his whole like exposition video about jets and like, ah, JEG
- 40:43Williams, the, the one guy that runs all of the boop boops at the security
- 40:47thing is Santa to pick up this JG Williams who's, you know, Burgess
- 40:52Meredith, a 85-year-old man or whatever, because you know, it's the future.
- 40:57And I guess he flew in Nam and so this is like 50 years later or whatever.
- 41:01He's basically like.
- 41:03Would my wife send you?
- 41:04No.
- 41:05All right.
- 41:05You wanna go fly a kite?
- 41:07So weird.
- 41:08Give like a Chinese history lesson as he's drinking Jack Daniels and talking
- 41:12about how he flew 138 missions in Nam.
- 41:15And then, uh, the guy's like, well, do you wanna fly a jet again?
- 41:19What?
- 41:20What the fuck are you talking about?
- 41:22I don't think they have those anymore, but yeah.
- 41:24Then we cut back to Harting.
- 41:25The kid, they're driving along, they got outta the mud.
- 41:27We see our first fox hunting posse, like it's just a bunch of yokels
- 41:31in West Virginia or whatever.
- 41:32Like we, we gotta find this guy on the race car and put a
- 41:35bullet in them or something.
- 41:37Is this the part where they're on the dock?
- 41:39Right after they passed the people, they wound up at the dock.
- 41:41Okay, okay.
- 41:42They like pull off road.
- 41:44Yeah.
- 41:45Yeah.
- 41:45That's crazy.
- 41:46So I was wondering at this point, I dunno if anybody caught it, there was
- 41:48a reddish orange object in the water.
- 41:51It was a boat, like a rowboat, and I couldn't tell if it was a boat or
- 41:55if they had crashed the car or not.
- 41:56But then obviously they got back and I was like, well that's the
- 41:58end of the movie right there.
- 41:59So that was a little strange.
- 42:01But that whole scene was a little strange because it was
- 42:03like a bonding scene, right?
- 42:05Like they're coming to terms with this adventure that they're
- 42:07now really committed to going on and getting to California.
- 42:10So I was like, okay.
- 42:11Well it was for the fact that as Lee Major's standing on the kid,
- 42:14like after he'd been pushed in, he actually, he's gonna lift the dock.
- 42:18The dock doesn't move at all, but Lee Majors goes flying off
- 42:20like he got thrown off on mic.
- 42:21Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 42:23He like damn near does a back flip on his own or whatever.
- 42:25Like I think he was supposed to be shaking it, but he realized he's like a 45 pound
- 42:30kid trying to shake a dock or whatever.
- 42:32And so Lee Major's improv, that's that fall guy stuff right there.
- 42:35Exactly.
- 42:37Probably my favorite part of this whole movie, I'm not gonna
- 42:39lie, we cut back to the security council or the DOT or whatever.
- 42:44And Hawkins is like talking to the, the other two people in this department.
- 42:48Like what do you see?
- 42:50Uh, just two guys driving across the country, like, no, no, no.
- 42:54This is dangerous to the balance that we've created.
- 42:57It's a metaphor.
- 42:59It's an allegory.
- 43:01Yeah.
- 43:01And for our system of protection and tranquility and keeping people
- 43:07under control so they don't do crazy things like drive cars or have
- 43:13opinions or chop up billionaires with guillotines or anything like that.
- 43:18No.
- 43:19This is how we keep them complacent.
- 43:22This is the time where I wrote it down.
- 43:24I made a note, I underscored it, I bolded it, wrote over it several times.
- 43:27This is the first time in a long time I've heard the word
- 43:30defecate be used in a movie.
- 43:32Yes.
- 43:33And I could not stop laughing because you have the penguin talking about defecating.
- 43:38And I'm just like, wait, what?
- 43:40What just happened?
- 43:41And so yeah, he goes on a rant and then yeah, this is where, uh, he talks about
- 43:45defecating on flowers or whatever.
- 43:47Yeah, exactly.
- 43:48Yeah.
- 43:48So then, uh, yeah, we cut to Williams.
- 43:51He's put on his outfit to be, I don't know, train Rocky.
- 43:54Like he's got his legit mickey outfit on and he goes to see his
- 43:58jet plane and it's dusty as fuck.
- 44:01And we get a nice little fixed team coming in and cleaning it up and stuff for him.
- 44:05There's a nice quote in there too.
- 44:07Remember, he walks up to the plane, he is by himself, touches
- 44:09little, he's like, never fear.
- 44:11Papa's here.
- 44:13You're like, oh God.
- 44:15Oh, oh, you think, oh God, until it's all fixed up.
- 44:18It's got its new paint job and he goes flying off in it.
- 44:21It looks awesome.
- 44:22That's a good looking plane.
- 44:24The process where they're rebuilding it, he's very involved in that.
- 44:27Maybe Vietnam veteran pilots had more knowledge of the aircraft.
- 44:31All of the pilots I dealt with in the military had like no knowledge of
- 44:35anything mechanical in the aircraft.
- 44:36So it was amazing to see a pilot actually putting it back together.
- 44:39It was a missed opportunity for all those mechanics to wear a
- 44:42black t-shirt and a bowler hat.
- 44:44And on the t-shirt it says goon because that's what I was expecting, right?
- 44:47Just like seeing out a Batman.
- 44:49Yeah.
- 44:50Wha wha wha wha wha telling them all what to do.
- 44:52And they're just running around like idiots.
- 44:53I mean, it's perfect.
- 44:54Oh, but he's flying in that jet plane and he's talking to
- 44:57it like it's his lost love.
- 44:58And he is like, oh, that's okay, baby.
- 45:01I'm just gonna take it nice and easy.
- 45:04Oh.
- 45:06Oh, I wrote the quote down.
- 45:08Here we go.
- 45:09And Tanya's already cringing.
- 45:10Oh baby, that's it, baby.
- 45:12You're better and sexier than ever.
- 45:14And then he starts going and he's like, howling like a wolf.
- 45:19How whatcha doing?
- 45:21Like a fucking Tex Avery cartoon So bad.
- 45:24Cringe.
- 45:24This is where he came.
- 45:25It was like 1970s audio from a porn or something.
- 45:28It was terrible.
- 45:29So then, uh, we got a roadblock set up in West Pennsylvania for 'em,
- 45:33and I'm like, that's all they've gone in, like those last three days.
- 45:36Okay, that's cool.
- 45:37That's exactly what I wrote down too.
- 45:39I was like, that's as far as they've made it to this point.
- 45:41Like, holy hell.
- 45:43That's how it is in all of these movies between New York
- 45:46or Boston, wherever they start.
- 45:47And western Pennsylvania, that's like a four day drive and then it's
- 45:5118 hours from there to California.
- 45:54Yeah, it's nuts.
- 45:55Yeah.
- 45:55We see, uh, har and the kid, they go on like the railroad tracks to like.
- 45:59Try to get around this roadblock and they're like, oh
- 46:02man, how are we gonna do it?
- 46:03The kid starts going off, like, I, they got like a satellite
- 46:05hookup and I can mess with that.
- 46:07So that night, I don't know, a Coke truck pulls up and like, as part of
- 46:11the roadblock and it's still good, and somehow the kid like blows it up and
- 46:17they drive the car right on through.
- 46:19I'm like, what the fuck is happening in this scene?
- 46:21Right?
- 46:22And then there's that one military guy who's like, you think
- 46:24this stuff is still any good?
- 46:26So now you're like, this is an old Coke truck that was never unloaded.
- 46:30You think gas goes bad after six months, right?
- 46:32Yeah.
- 46:33But also, uh, fallout, you hacks
- 46:38also.
- 46:38I did just have a thought.
- 46:39Ohoh.
- 46:40I know I'm scared too.
- 46:41We're talking about how they don't seem to know where states start and end.
- 46:45It is in the future.
- 46:46Maybe they've changed the lines since we're talking about the
- 46:49root and how long it takes.
- 46:51And at one point they're like, they're going a hundred miles an hour.
- 46:55We estimate that that's going to be, that they're going to
- 46:58run outta fuel in 300 miles.
- 47:00What was the fuel economy on the nine 17?
- 47:03Yeah, it was not that at wide open throttle.
- 47:06It is not that.
- 47:07That's why they only have to get gas.
- 47:09Like what?
- 47:10Maybe once in a 500 mile race, right?
- 47:12According to Google, it's two miles a gallon.
- 47:15Wow.
- 47:16So a van gets better mileage than that?
- 47:18Oh, far better.
- 47:18Far better.
- 47:19We get like 14, this escape sequence.
- 47:23We talked about the Smokey The Bear one from earlier was like Looney Tunes
- 47:27level and the Keystone cops to include the military and the security guards
- 47:31haven't gotten any smarter or any better.
- 47:33This was straight up Smokey and the Bandit Chicanery.
- 47:37Mm-hmm.
- 47:37I mean, I busted out laughing 'cause I forgot how cornball this scene is,
- 47:41and especially the fact that he's pushing his own car dressed like one.
- 47:46I was like, where did he get the clothes?
- 47:47Like who did he mug?
- 47:48And the kid got one too.
- 47:50So the satellite that was up on the tracks they flashed back to.
- 47:53And the two guys that I got, oh, that's right.
- 47:55They're like hog tied in their tidy white and T-shirts.
- 47:58You know why it didn't register?
- 47:59Because it's such a cartoon trope that it just doesn't stick in my brain.
- 48:03Like how many times have you seen that before where the guy gets knocked
- 48:06out and they steal his clothes?
- 48:08It's like Star Wars.
- 48:09All those movies do the same thing.
- 48:10You're like, all right, whatever.
- 48:12It's so cornball.
- 48:13But guys, now we cut to the best part.
- 48:15They've just got past the West Pennsylvania checkpoint.
- 48:18We then cut to a jet flying over the American southwest near Flagstaff.
- 48:22Well, and they made a reference to Kansas at one point.
- 48:25Yes.
- 48:25They said they're in Kansas, cut to them driving in the mountains, and
- 48:29I'm like, there is not one fucking mountain in the entire state of Kansas.
- 48:33What the hell has happened in this post apocalyptic future?
- 48:35Well also, how slow is this supersonic jet that he's flying?
- 48:39Well, what do you mean?
- 48:39He's flying in Arizona already.
- 48:42So Lee Majors and this kid.
- 48:44Race ring, whatever his name is, they're stealing gas wherever they can find it.
- 48:48Mm-hmm.
- 48:49Okay, fine.
- 48:50We, we will, we will suspend disbelief here.
- 48:52Where is the plane getting refueled?
- 48:55I wondered that.
- 48:56Yeah.
- 48:56Well the one time he landed, the guy was like, well, you couldn't
- 48:58refill while you're there.
- 49:00Right.
- 49:01And it's like he's the middle of nowhere, but Okay.
- 49:04Apparently there was a fuel station.
- 49:05What's the, uh, fuel economy on that jet again?
- 49:07Is it, uh, similarly, two miles to gallon or It is a negative number, I believe.
- 49:12Yeah, it's gallons per mile.
- 49:14Yeah.
- 49:15Many aircraft burn, almost half their fuel.
- 49:17Just taking off.
- 49:18Good lord.
- 49:19Or in the air is actually really efficient.
- 49:21But on the ground is when they're not, not the way he was flying,
- 49:24that thing wasn't efficient.
- 49:25My God.
- 49:26Yeah.
- 49:26Eight feet off the ground, half the movie.
- 49:28Yeah.
- 49:29So yeah, they're flying in America somewhere and uh, you know, that night
- 49:33hearting the kid, they stop, have a little campfire, and, uh, the kid's like,
- 49:37well, what do you do besides race cars?
- 49:40What.
- 49:41Oh wait, did you have a son?
- 49:42About my age?
- 49:44Yeah.
- 49:44A little older, but whatever.
- 49:46And that conversation goes fucking nowhere.
- 49:48Yeah, it was so dumb.
- 49:49I feel like they didn't get the script, like the day they were shooting it, they
- 49:53were just kinda like trying to improv, but then it's like, I can't talk to this kid.
- 49:57Yeah.
- 49:57I don't know.
- 49:58I think I'm the fall guy in this one because I think it was before the
- 50:00boat or the water on the dock thing.
- 50:03We already passed the time where the kid is like whining, like
- 50:06a little bee about Oh yeah.
- 50:07Not being able to drive.
- 50:08And I'm like, how do you even know how to drive?
- 50:10You do trust me, cars have been outlawed since you've been born and you're
- 50:14gonna get in race car and drive it.
- 50:16If memory serves me correctly.
- 50:18When he is in the garage, he's like, what is this?
- 50:21It's a car.
- 50:22It's a little before your time and not 12 hours later, he is
- 50:25like, you won't even let me drive.
- 50:26And I'm like, you don't know how to start this dude.
- 50:28Like, you're lucky I let you sit here instead of in the
- 50:31trunk, which doesn't exist.
- 50:34Oh.
- 50:34Which is where he stores his transfer pump, don't forget.
- 50:37And his helmet.
- 50:38Yeah.
- 50:38All this extra stuff that they have.
- 50:40Okay.
- 50:41So where were we now?
- 50:42We we were the hell, oh well we're 18 hours later.
- 50:44'cause they had the one night they're in Kansas.
- 50:46Mountains of Kansas.
- 50:48So now we're in the middle of southern Utah.
- 50:50Oh, we're in Utah.
- 50:51Okay.
- 50:52We left the mountains of Kansas or Arizona, I don't know, like it's
- 50:54all kind of blurs Castle Rock or whatever that's called out there
- 50:57where he flies through the first time.
- 50:59I was like, that looks like Utah.
- 51:00Yeah.
- 51:00It all looks like the, what was it, monument Valley or, yeah, monument Valley.
- 51:03That's it.
- 51:04Grand Escalante staircase.
- 51:05Like all that.
- 51:06Yeah.
- 51:06So it's like, okay, cool.
- 51:08Well they're in Utah.
- 51:08Where?
- 51:08Where's the car?
- 51:09Oh, I guess the car's there now too, because they hear the jet and
- 51:13it's like, all right, that's cool.
- 51:14You get a little fly by and not just a fly by though.
- 51:17It's ba as he's going by.
- 51:20Oh, that's right.
- 51:21Yeah.
- 51:21This is where they shoot up the shell station and everything.
- 51:23That's right.
- 51:24And uh, heart gets hit in the shoulder.
- 51:26Oh fuck.
- 51:27They pull off into the tree.
- 51:28So the jet has no idea where they are.
- 51:30Uhhuh.
- 51:31'cause it's not like it has a, uh, what's the term?
- 51:34Bird's eye view of everything for miles in every direction.
- 51:39And that car is so camouflaged in the woods too, you know?
- 51:42Yeah.
- 51:42This bright, like Ferrari, red, orange, whatever, race car in an area
- 51:48where the trees are very sporadic.
- 51:49Again, plot holes galore.
- 51:51The only tracks for a thousand miles because there's no cars out there.
- 51:56Various points up to this.
- 51:57They've taken it on terrain that I wouldn't imagine be
- 51:59very comfortable in that car.
- 52:01You know, this is the stuff Dan thinks about.
- 52:03That never crosses my mind.
- 52:04This thing's crossed my mind too.
- 52:06'cause have we made it to where they were suddenly in snow?
- 52:09Mm-hmm.
- 52:11Yeah.
- 52:11And these m fers are in an open cabin thing.
- 52:15It's cold enough for there to be snow.
- 52:16You would be dying.
- 52:18Yes.
- 52:18And then they say something like, we need to get to lower ground.
- 52:22And I'm like, like in a river, is that what you're looking to do?
- 52:25And so they park in a field Yep.
- 52:28Where a jet could possibly see them.
- 52:30Nope.
- 52:32And then he is like, all right kid, you start driving and then like the
- 52:36kid can't start it because you know.
- 52:38He doesn't know what he's doing.
- 52:39Probably also is probably outta gas also.
- 52:42Oh shit.
- 52:43Is that guy dead?
- 52:44He started it and he started going, he stalled out.
- 52:48Well, I was like, did you stall it or did it run outta gas?
- 52:50Because I was like, okay.
- 52:51He stalled it, but then it's like it wouldn't turn back on.
- 52:53I'm like, so is it out of gas?
- 52:54Like, and, and then it starts zooming in and heart, he's laying
- 52:57in the chair like he's fucking dead.
- 52:58He's like, passed out or taking a nap or whatever.
- 53:01Losing all that blood.
- 53:02Oh, what?
- 53:02What's going on here?
- 53:03Cut to them just back on the road driving like, okay, where's that?
- 53:06Not only are they driving, but this is the first time we see the plane
- 53:10like almost in land condition.
- 53:12Chasing.
- 53:12It's a dream.
- 53:13It was a dream.
- 53:14Was it a dream?
- 53:15Was it Yes.
- 53:15If you paid attention.
- 53:16Because I was like, what's going on?
- 53:18There was only a single person in the car and they were wearing a
- 53:21helmet, so, and then he woke up in the bed, so he was dreaming it.
- 53:26Oh, okay.
- 53:27But still, we had some stunt flying 'cause the plane was like near
- 53:30touchdown conditions chasing the car.
- 53:32That was a really cool shot to see the car coming and then like the heat waves
- 53:37coming up, the asphalt and the plane.
- 53:38And that was, I thought that was pretty epic.
- 53:40Yeah.
- 53:40But then we cut to him waking up in a bed on an Indian reservation
- 53:44and I'm like, god dammit movie.
- 53:45But we do see the car get towed in by the horses.
- 53:48I think it is exactly why I'm like, then is it out of gas on
- 53:52the facts of being outta gas?
- 53:53Because other than that, had he stalled it, anybody who's ever stalled a manual
- 53:56vehicle, it kind of bucks a little bit, but it was like just tapered off like.
- 54:00Shutting off and being to towed in by the horses.
- 54:02I do think it was, it ran out of fuel.
- 54:04There you go.
- 54:05I don't know how they got the fuel to leave later.
- 54:07And then the horses must have pissed in the tank, I guess.
- 54:09I don't know.
- 54:10Yeah, methane.
- 54:11They made it on the res. That's what they did.
- 54:13Yeah.
- 54:13Yeah.
- 54:14They, they all, uh, keep their poop for methane and, you know,
- 54:17use it usually for campfires.
- 54:19But isn't that the science?
- 54:21Right.
- 54:21If you leave poop and water long enough, it'll create nitric
- 54:24acid, then that's volatile.
- 54:26You know, the whole, I don't know.
- 54:26I'm not a chemist, but I heard that something.
- 54:28Yeah, that's where the whole ship Highend transit thing comes in.
- 54:31They could have had a still in the cave where they had that car.
- 54:33Oh, there we go.
- 54:34That's true.
- 54:35Guys, we finally decided, you know what, we should have a second female
- 54:39character in this movie because we have the chick from the DOT or whatever.
- 54:43Oh babe, this is the third one.
- 54:44'cause the teacher.
- 54:45Yeah.
- 54:45Okay.
- 54:45Yeah.
- 54:45There was mistake.
- 54:46I guess that counts my mistake.
- 54:47Yeah.
- 54:47Yeah, that counts.
- 54:48Lucky Third.
- 54:49Well, we had his wife for like 30 seconds crying on a video.
- 54:52Oh.
- 54:54I mean, okay.
- 54:55Gosh, I guess there, there's so many women in this film, guys.
- 54:58I think this passed the back till test.
- 55:01We've actually got like a fairly early on credit at the end of the movie, which
- 55:05amazed me for the fact that I think it was just like a video of her and it
- 55:08wasn't live action of her in the movie.
- 55:10It would've been better if it was Farrah Faucet.
- 55:12That would've been perfect, but you know, anyway, whatever.
- 55:14Well more on that and fun facts, so, so yeah, that's uh, lady that, I guess at
- 55:21the Indian reservation though, I think she's late to be one of Charlie's Angels.
- 55:25She was basically like, Hey, how, how's it going?
- 55:27You feeling better?
- 55:28Sure.
- 55:28Where the fuck am I?
- 55:30Oh yeah, you're on the Indian reservation.
- 55:31We reclaimed it after everybody left and I've been out here for like eight
- 55:35years, exposition, blah, blah, blah.
- 55:37And then, yeah, they sore the car in the mine.
- 55:39So then we cut to Captain Williams and he's at the Pima airplane junkyard in
- 55:44Arizona now looking at all the old jets.
- 55:47He's like reporting back to the DOT, like, Hey, I lost him.
- 55:50And then he is like flying a kite, just kind of toying with him like, oh,
- 55:54I don't know, it's gonna be, take me a while, flying around to find him.
- 55:57He, he's just, just dragging it out so he can fly around in his plane for
- 56:00like the rest of the movie, right?
- 56:02Yeah.
- 56:02And then, yeah, the widow back at the Indian reservation, she's
- 56:05giving her whole backstory.
- 56:07Oh, that's right.
- 56:08The DOT we think they might be at, uh, this Indian reservation or whatever.
- 56:11Do we have anyone in the area that can like go check for us?
- 56:14Like, well we could talk to Utah.
- 56:17I don't know.
- 56:17They're tough to deal with those, uh, goddamn Mormon Zionists.
- 56:22And I'm like, wow, this is the future.
- 56:24The not too distant future.
- 56:27I think this is the part where we cut back to the point where I wrote down in
- 56:30my notes, hoedowns and hot air balloons.
- 56:33Yeah.
- 56:33We cut to a fucking hoot.
- 56:34Nanny.
- 56:35Yeah.
- 56:37That was what was missing the whole time.
- 56:39This is what this movie needed.
- 56:41Yeah.
- 56:42Part starts giving his head backstory or whatever, and then it's like.
- 56:45Smash cut to them at a bar
- 56:49square dancing and shit.
- 56:51Did you notice there was no aluminum foil anywhere in that bar?
- 56:54No, but cut to post coitus.
- 56:57Oh my God.
- 56:58It was like one day I'm like, wow, that's fast.
- 57:01And then the kid, you love her.
- 57:02I'm like, what?
- 57:03You just met her so mandatory of movies of this period.
- 57:07Terrible.
- 57:08So yeah.
- 57:09Then uh, the kids like trying to add like the radio to the car,
- 57:13so yeah, so we can keep tabs on things, but then he overhears like a
- 57:16walkie-talkie transmission about 'em.
- 57:18Uh Alright.
- 57:19Execute Plan Alpha.
- 57:21Oh yeah.
- 57:22Plan Alpha.
- 57:23We've labeled the plan.
- 57:24We've got a mission, you know, all set up.
- 57:26Where's Beta Charlie Delta.
- 57:28Right.
- 57:28There's gotta be multiple plans and they must be in escalation form.
- 57:31Hell no.
- 57:32Plan Alpha, shoot up the village.
- 57:34Let's do it.
- 57:35Yeah, just, just massacre everybody.
- 57:37Things escalated.
- 57:38Quickly, I assume Plan B was Nepal.
- 57:41That's my point.
- 57:42If Plan Alpha was that severe, what was Plan Beta?
- 57:47Add the words or else like demolition Man.
- 57:53You don't know how to use the seashells.
- 57:54Yeah.
- 57:55Right.
- 57:55Oh, by the way, the security for this Indian reservation is, what was it?
- 57:59Her dad or grandpa used to be like a New York cop, but like the oldest man
- 58:02you've ever seen, they should have had Don Knotz play the character.
- 58:05Yeah.
- 58:13Yeah, Barney five sees this like SWAT team coming in and
- 58:15he is like, what motherfuckers?
- 58:17And of course like shoots one of 'em and they just Robocop his ass.
- 58:22Worst thing is there was no words exchanged.
- 58:25It was just he sees them, pulls the gun outta the holster and fires.
- 58:28There was no questions, no conversation.
- 58:30It was just like open fire.
- 58:32Yeah.
- 58:32This is so much better than the imagery I had.
- 58:34I kept thinking about Earnest goes to jail.
- 58:37Remember the old guy that's the security guard and every time he fired
- 58:39the gun he get knocked backwards.
- 58:41Yeah, of course.
- 58:42Mayhem and sues as this elite squadron comes in and starts
- 58:45taking out unsuspecting women and children heart's running around.
- 58:49He is like, where's your Dora?
- 58:50I need to find Eudora.
- 58:51And I love how like the one Indian guy like is like.
- 58:54No, just leave.
- 58:56They're looking for you.
- 58:57If they ask me, I'm gonna tell them where you are.
- 58:59So just go.
- 59:01Yeah.
- 59:01We then cut to them on the road and I'm like, wow, we missed a really
- 59:04daring escape somehow how They got the car out of the mine refueled got
- 59:09it on the road, passed the elite SWAT team threw a field onto the main road.
- 59:15You couldn't even throw a dream sequence in there to cut it up.
- 59:18Nope.
- 59:19Alright.
- 59:19Plan Alpha.
- 59:20It was all plan alpha.
- 59:21I'm like, yeah, that was easy.
- 59:22And then, okay, now back at the DOT.
- 59:26Not only do they have access to every security camera ever, and satellites
- 59:29and all that shit, apparently they have access to the Star Wars program and lasers
- 59:34all over the American Southwest desert.
- 59:37This was such a Doctor Evil moment.
- 59:39I was like, I literally wrote down lasers.
- 59:43I was like, this is awesome.
- 59:45Yeah, they had the guy playing around with it, you know, see him blow up a
- 59:47bunch of cactus, and then, uh, Hawkins, you know, the, the evil guy from dc He's
- 59:51like, can you set that to automatic?
- 59:53Cool.
- 59:54Why don't you give me the key now?
- 59:56But, but if it's automatic, it's just gonna shoot anything
- 59:58that goes through that area.
- 59:59Exactly.
- 1:00:01And of course that's the road they're about to pass on or whatever.
- 1:00:04And Babu ba, even though I know this movie predates the one I'm about to
- 1:00:09reference, if you guys remember the James Bond film, or Sean Connery
- 1:00:13came back after being retired from James Bond, never say never again.
- 1:00:17There's that scene where he's playing against the villain and that video game
- 1:00:20and it's like electro Shocking them.
- 1:00:22Yeah, but they're, they're flying the nukes.
- 1:00:23They're sort of real missiles, but they're not.
- 1:00:26And like this whole scene, I was like, that's where they got their inspiration
- 1:00:29from for that bond film was from this, because it reminded me of that.
- 1:00:32Very, very much so.
- 1:00:34They park.
- 1:00:35The jet lands by them.
- 1:00:37You know, Williams flies in by the jet, wherever lands, and they
- 1:00:39just sit there like perfectly still staring at each other.
- 1:00:42And this is where heart's just like, he just wants to chase.
- 1:00:46He's not even concerned about whatever, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:00:48He is like, all right kid, you're gonna stay here and I'm gonna play
- 1:00:51chicken with this goddamn jet plane.
- 1:00:53The kid like tackles heart and he is like, Hey, we're gonna be driving blah blah.
- 1:00:57Whatcha doing this?
- 1:00:58So we can just keep going.
- 1:01:00Of course we get the whole teary thing, like, I don't want to lose you.
- 1:01:04Barf.
- 1:01:05Is that what's going on?
- 1:01:06All right.
- 1:01:06Then they, uh, play chicken.
- 1:01:08Oh my god.
- 1:01:08The guy, the DOT is like, oh, 150 miles an hour, 160, 170.
- 1:01:14Get up to like 250 like it takes for fucking ever.
- 1:01:16It's the equivalent of in speed two cruise control.
- 1:01:19When the guys count down the knots as the ship is going through the
- 1:01:24port and the town and everything, he is like three knots, like for four
- 1:01:29minutes of destruction, two knots.
- 1:01:31Fucking dumb.
- 1:01:32Basically the, uh, jet ends up swerving out of the way and cheers, I guess,
- 1:01:37from the Department of Transportation.
- 1:01:39Okay, cool.
- 1:01:40I must not be that vested in this movie anymore.
- 1:01:42Sorry.
- 1:01:43It's, I don't know.
- 1:01:44And then we cut to the kid being back in the car.
- 1:01:47Yes, yes, yes.
- 1:01:48At full speed.
- 1:01:49And I'm like, when the fuck did that happen?
- 1:01:51Okay.
- 1:01:51But the real quick thing, when they're playing chicken.
- 1:01:53You see that hesitation from him shift gear.
- 1:01:55And I think that was like the purpose of that point in the movie was him
- 1:01:58overcoming his fear that he mentioned about the accident with the racing
- 1:02:01when he, oh, because he kind of hesitates and then he is like the
- 1:02:05hell and he throws into the next gear and just hammer down towards the jet.
- 1:02:08It was very anime esque.
- 1:02:10I must give it my all and then goes super say and, and does
- 1:02:15250 miles an hour is amazing.
- 1:02:17You could do a speed racer kid back in the car.
- 1:02:19Blew my mind as well as like, yeah, that was weird.
- 1:02:21Was he running behind him?
- 1:02:23Like Speedy Gonzalez the whole time he was having there the whole
- 1:02:25time he was on his hoverboard.
- 1:02:27That's what it was.
- 1:02:28He tethered on a hoverboard.
- 1:02:30Well, uh, so yeah, the jets chasing him behind him.
- 1:02:32Again, they're trying to like communicate like with the radio
- 1:02:35and he is like, Hey, am I good?
- 1:02:37Kay, are you, you're doing all right.
- 1:02:39Hey, you knew I was bluffing or whatever.
- 1:02:41I, I don't know.
- 1:02:43They're talking on the radio and Beckett, DOT Hawkins is hearing and
- 1:02:45he is like, jam that signal and make sure the lasers are ready to go.
- 1:02:49But bridge Meredith.
- 1:02:50I don't think he knew until after the radio signals jammed.
- 1:02:54But then he is like, you gotta look out, there's lasers up ahead.
- 1:02:57Hello?
- 1:02:57Can you hear me?
- 1:02:58And they're like trying to communicate with like once for, yes, twice for no
- 1:03:02kind of like shit with the flashlight.
- 1:03:04It takes too damn long.
- 1:03:05It was awful.
- 1:03:06And then the jet blows up a trailer in front of him and they're like,
- 1:03:09oh no, he is opening fire again.
- 1:03:10Like, no.
- 1:03:11Otherwise he'd be shooting at us instead of random trailers.
- 1:03:13Hmm.
- 1:03:14Blowing up the trailer, like got him to stop like momentarily.
- 1:03:17Yeah.
- 1:03:17But then I wrote down the following sequence because Go for it.
- 1:03:21Go for it.
- 1:03:21Yeah.
- 1:03:21To your point, this took way too long.
- 1:03:24Mm-hmm.
- 1:03:24In a movie that was already too long.
- 1:03:26I wrote laser attacks, plane, plane attacks, laser eventually
- 1:03:30kamikaze into laser ground station.
- 1:03:33No.
- 1:03:34Hold on because plane attacks, laser misses.
- 1:03:37Mm-hmm.
- 1:03:38Plane drops two bombs simultaneously, hits two different targets
- 1:03:42on each side of the road.
- 1:03:44Exactly.
- 1:03:45Yep.
- 1:03:45He was using the machine gun to stray the laser.
- 1:03:48He used the bombs for the single wides that just so communally people,
- 1:03:51I guess were living right next to the road in the middle of the day.
- 1:03:54A hundred percent.
- 1:03:54Yeah.
- 1:03:55Yeah.
- 1:03:55He, the bombs on the laser, it may have been effective, but who knows?
- 1:03:59Everything we described here was way more interesting than what we actually saw.
- 1:04:04I just wanna point that out.
- 1:04:06He got Burgess Meredith, like howling at the moon as he jet
- 1:04:09pedos into the laser and explodes.
- 1:04:11And the only thing like, uh, to my, my chance to wear my medals after 30 years,
- 1:04:17what of you guys might understand that?
- 1:04:19And I'm like, no, probably not.
- 1:04:20No, that's cool.
- 1:04:21So I picked up on that line, and again, we were talking about
- 1:04:24chronology earlier, like what time period, what year is this set in?
- 1:04:29And if he fought in Nam and after I get to wear my medals after 30
- 1:04:33years, so is it the nineties then?
- 1:04:36Like, yeah.
- 1:04:36When is this taking place?
- 1:04:38It's actually 50 years ago, but he thinks it's 30 because he may have a
- 1:04:42little bit of dementia because he's 112.
- 1:04:44Yeah.
- 1:04:45Yeah.
- 1:04:45He thinks Batman was, was 15 years ago and it's like, oh no, not in this movie.
- 1:04:51I figured this took place late nineties, early two thousands.
- 1:04:54'cause a comment that's been made later by the one guy back at the DOT or whatever.
- 1:04:58Bite your tongue.
- 1:04:59Yeah.
- 1:05:00According to fun facts.
- 1:05:01I just looked it up.
- 1:05:02It is set in the year 2011.
- 1:05:04The year 2000.
- 1:05:07This last part.
- 1:05:08Yeah.
- 1:05:08Yeah.
- 1:05:09Cool.
- 1:05:09Lasers down.
- 1:05:10And then this is when hard and the kid decide to stop the car.
- 1:05:14Yep.
- 1:05:14I don't know.
- 1:05:15They go to check the crash rubble.
- 1:05:17'cause I don't know what they're expecting to find other than
- 1:05:20perhaps a charred corpse.
- 1:05:22No body, no death.
- 1:05:23That's what I wrote.
- 1:05:24I'm just amazed that the flask was sitting there and he picks it up.
- 1:05:27Yeah, that thing should have been nuclear hot too.
- 1:05:30Oh yeah, totally.
- 1:05:31But guys, it's okay.
- 1:05:32You know why the kid says the line, I think we're there cut to
- 1:05:37them at the California border.
- 1:05:39I assume it's zizi on a bridge somewhere.
- 1:05:43There's surrounded by a dozen people that are like, Hey, welcome, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:05:48And then we cut back to Hawkins of the DT.
- 1:05:50He's like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 1:05:52Hold on.
- 1:05:52Oh, hold on.
- 1:05:52No, no, no.
- 1:05:53Please go for it.
- 1:05:53Go for it.
- 1:05:54Did anybody else.
- 1:05:56Notice that California looked like munchkin land very green.
- 1:06:00Suddenly it was wild.
- 1:06:02And buildings are fuchsia and stuff.
- 1:06:03Like if you pause and look, you're like, it looks like munchkin land.
- 1:06:06Oh, are you talking about the matte painting or whatever?
- 1:06:08Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:09Okay.
- 1:06:10Yeah.
- 1:06:10The matte paintings in this are great.
- 1:06:12'cause they're like literally, I think cut from like sci-fi novels or whatever.
- 1:06:16I, I was waiting to see like the Jetsons car flying around
- 1:06:18or something, but it was wild.
- 1:06:21All right.
- 1:06:21So we cut back to the DOT and uh, Hawkins is there and he is like, well, that's it.
- 1:06:25It's a symbol.
- 1:06:26There's gonna be cause fucking everywhere and we're gonna
- 1:06:29lose our whole grip on society.
- 1:06:31'cause this old dude in this kid drove 3000 miles over
- 1:06:35the course of three months.
- 1:06:36Who knows?
- 1:06:37The time is a construct.
- 1:06:38It's gonna set us back to the nineties that he says to the eighties.
- 1:06:42To the eighties, because I re-listened to you.
- 1:06:44He goes, this could set us back to the eighties.
- 1:06:46Yes.
- 1:06:46Yes.
- 1:06:47Oh, the eighties.
- 1:06:47Oh, I swear.
- 1:06:48Okay.
- 1:06:49He said that.
- 1:06:49But then it shows the presidential seal.
- 1:06:52Roll credits.
- 1:06:53Oh my God.
- 1:06:54I was like, what the fuck?
- 1:06:55Literally I was like, it's over.
- 1:06:57That's it.
- 1:06:58Yeah.
- 1:06:58This is like Stephen King wrote the ending on this fucking thing.
- 1:07:00'cause it's like, oh look, we're here now.
- 1:07:03Oh, well I guess that's the end.
- 1:07:05This is the shortest long movie I've ever watched, dude.
- 1:07:10So fucking rough.
- 1:07:11It was an hour 45 that flew by and that ending just cemented it as well.
- 1:07:16It was like, that's it.
- 1:07:17It's over.
- 1:07:17Seriously.
- 1:07:18Yeah.
- 1:07:18See it guys.
- 1:07:19That's the last Chase.
- 1:07:20Tanya, would you recommend it?
- 1:07:24Oh, with a big sigh on that one.
- 1:07:26Over some of the other movies Yes.
- 1:07:27That we've watched.
- 1:07:28She's specifically talking about the stuntman.
- 1:07:31No, but I think I would.
- 1:07:33Over the stunt man over trading paint over senior trip.
- 1:07:38Yeah, I think I'd recommend it.
- 1:07:39Like it wasn't totally hateful.
- 1:07:41Somehow it kept moving even though it was so long, shortest, long movie ever.
- 1:07:46I don't understand.
- 1:07:47Alright, how about you Eric?
- 1:07:48I actually like this movie.
- 1:07:50It's sort of charming.
- 1:07:51It's stupid.
- 1:07:52It's fun.
- 1:07:53Escape Familiar.
- 1:07:54I really like the car, obviously.
- 1:07:56Talk about that in the fun facts part.
- 1:07:58But I like a good car chase, right?
- 1:08:00I mean the seven Ups and Vanishing Point and all those
- 1:08:03movies are kind of a similar ilk.
- 1:08:04So for me, this brings back those memories and they're kind of fun as a
- 1:08:08kid, you're like, yeah, it's cartoony.
- 1:08:09Just like Cannonball Run is in a way and it's got all these aspects,
- 1:08:13but it doesn't take itself to the extremes that those other movies do.
- 1:08:17It sort of sits in the middle, and if you can find it and you can watch it, I
- 1:08:21would say definitely take a peek at it.
- 1:08:22It's a Lee Major's treasure out of his 130 credits, you know, it's
- 1:08:26definitely one right up at the top, right up there with Musketeers forever.
- 1:08:30How about you Mount Man, mountain Man, Dan?
- 1:08:32Mountain Mike.
- 1:08:34I think for Eric, the reason he likes it so much is he didn't have
- 1:08:37to like flip out 'cause the auditory sounds, 'cause if those sounds were
- 1:08:40wrong, he would hate this movie.
- 1:08:43I mean, there's plenty of things to hate about this movie, but in general
- 1:08:46I like it as for recommended to people.
- 1:08:49If they want like the nostalgic 1970s feel movie, I'd be like, yeah,
- 1:08:52it's a cool older chase concept.
- 1:08:55I even don't even hate the overbearing government aspect of
- 1:08:59it too, 'cause that's kind of cool.
- 1:09:00'cause there's tons of movies that are like that where the rebellion against it,
- 1:09:03you know, no matter what movie it may be.
- 1:09:05So it's worth watching.
- 1:09:07But yeah, it's definitely not the worst one we've watched.
- 1:09:10But it's definitely not the best either.
- 1:09:12You heard here, first Mountain Man.
- 1:09:13Dan likes an overbearing government.
- 1:09:16I know.
- 1:09:18I like the rebellious part.
- 1:09:20Oh, totally.
- 1:09:20They rebelling against it.
- 1:09:21Oh, okay.
- 1:09:22Like people breaking several felonies in cars is what he likes.
- 1:09:26Come on.
- 1:09:26Oh, okay.
- 1:09:26Excellent.
- 1:09:27Come on.
- 1:09:27How about you, babe?
- 1:09:28Would you recommend this movie?
- 1:09:29Look, this is definitely not the worst movie we've watched
- 1:09:32even with these nice folk.
- 1:09:34That's true.
- 1:09:34Yeah.
- 1:09:35This movie felt like it was four and a half hours long.
- 1:09:37The pacing is rough on this, and I am a fan of seventies movies.
- 1:09:41I'm usually a fan of seventies pacing, but also loses stars because.
- 1:09:46There's no hand grenades.
- 1:09:48Oh yeah.
- 1:09:48Yeah.
- 1:09:49It is very death race, 2000 and blah, blah blah.
- 1:09:52Is death race.
- 1:09:532000 without the fun.
- 1:09:55I was thinking of this like the entire goddamn time.
- 1:09:58It's basically over the top without the fun or the charisma.
- 1:10:02Yeah.
- 1:10:02Yeah.
- 1:10:02It's basically just an old dude and a kid just driving along, having stupid
- 1:10:07conversations to go fucking nowhere.
- 1:10:09And then occasionally you cut to Robert Loja trying to kill them.
- 1:10:13Yeah.
- 1:10:13Kill one of 'em, I guess specifically, but it's like at least in over the top,
- 1:10:17you have all the guys like chugging oil or whatever in their little
- 1:10:20wrestling promos for arm wrestling.
- 1:10:22But, uh, yeah, it, this is a tough recommend because it's, if you wanna
- 1:10:26see one of those movies of like Racing Across America for whatever
- 1:10:30reason, I feel like originally this movie was like two and a half hours
- 1:10:33long and they're like, God help you.
- 1:10:35If it's over an hour and 42 minutes and they're like, well shit, I guess
- 1:10:38I can just cut out the third act.
- 1:10:39Really?
- 1:10:39Who really needs that shit?
- 1:10:41That's easy.
- 1:10:42That's Lee Majors in Munchkin Land.
- 1:10:43That's what the third act is.
- 1:10:45Oh, it looks like we're here.
- 1:10:46I assume that line was 80 Yard.
- 1:10:51I gotta go back to my home planet now.
- 1:10:52Boop boop.
- 1:10:54Where's Poochie?
- 1:10:55Well then Don, we're gonna take quick commercial break.
- 1:10:56Oh.
- 1:10:57But when we come back, we have more beer.
- 1:10:59What's fun Facts?
- 1:11:01Yeah.
- 1:11:01And what we learned from the last Chase ba.
- 1:11:08We need more beer, don't we?
- 1:11:09Yeah, sure.
- 1:11:11Right.
- 1:11:11And we're back.
- 1:11:12Oh my God, Steve, those are the greatest ads that I've ever
- 1:11:14added in the history of adding.
- 1:11:16Oh, she said it.
- 1:11:17They're better than arguing with my mother.
- 1:11:19Alright.
- 1:11:21Hey babe.
- 1:11:21Uh, would you like a beverage?
- 1:11:24Oh, please.
- 1:11:25For the love of God, please.
- 1:11:26Well, luckily from 21st Amendment Brewery.
- 1:11:29Ooh, in San Francisco, California.
- 1:11:31Yeah.
- 1:11:32Munchkin Land hell or high twilight citrus weed ale.
- 1:11:365.6% alcohol by volume.
- 1:11:38Guys, the time of this here recording.
- 1:11:40This is in fact our first time trying this beer.
- 1:11:42We love The Hell or High Watermelon, which is a watermelon wheat
- 1:11:45ale that is not terribly sweet, but it's just crazy refreshing.
- 1:11:49Mm-hmm.
- 1:11:49And this is an ale Brewed with Sweet Orange Peel.
- 1:11:53There we go.
- 1:11:54Ooh, my top.
- 1:11:56Top.
- 1:11:56Nice.
- 1:11:57And the pour down my throat.
- 1:12:00Yeah.
- 1:12:00Smells really bright and citrusy right on the nose.
- 1:12:02Like it smells like mandarin oranges.
- 1:12:04Oh yeah.
- 1:12:05This is like orange juice.
- 1:12:06Pretty smooth.
- 1:12:07And yeah, this tastes like a mimosa where, uh, pouring the champagne and
- 1:12:11it'll just like a splash of orange juice.
- 1:12:13It's a bru.
- 1:12:14Moosa.
- 1:12:14It's a bru mo.
- 1:12:15So you know what?
- 1:12:16I'm not opposed to it.
- 1:12:16Yeah.
- 1:12:17This on a hot day.
- 1:12:18Heck yeah.
- 1:12:19Hmm.
- 1:12:20Not bad.
- 1:12:20That's the, uh, 21st Amendment hell or high twilight.
- 1:12:24Highly recommend guys, 21st Amendment brewing is, uh, is really good.
- 1:12:27You guys, uh, still drinking from your well or whatever, or, oh, this iron
- 1:12:31brew is just mm, no, no, no, no, no.
- 1:12:36Is something wrong with your camera?
- 1:12:37It looks like you're vibrating.
- 1:12:39Pretty much has set his body to blur outside of the fact that
- 1:12:45the chair's trying to kill me.
- 1:12:47Every time I move around, the hairs on the back of my neck are literally
- 1:12:50standing up and I've gotten super warm.
- 1:12:51So it gives me the same effect as having a beer.
- 1:12:53He feels the money has on the back of his neck going, woo woo woo.
- 1:12:57You heard that too?
- 1:12:57Yeah.
- 1:12:58Guys, watch Congo.
- 1:12:59It's the 30th anniversary.
- 1:13:00It's the greatest movie ever made.
- 1:13:02Would anybody be interested in fun facts about this movie?
- 1:13:05Abso Freak.
- 1:13:05Absolutely.
- 1:13:06Are they fun facts?
- 1:13:07Super fun facts 'cause of fun, fun facts.
- 1:13:11Well, let's find out.
- 1:13:11All right, first off, rotten Tomatoes.
- 1:13:13There is one critic review.
- 1:13:15From Tony Crowley of Starburst.
- 1:13:18Apparently that's a publication July 26th, 2022.
- 1:13:21It has a few delusions of grandeur, but the pace is fine.
- 1:13:25It's not the effects.
- 1:13:26Very special, and the footage shot in the Arizona desert is simply terrific.
- 1:13:30I. Fresh.
- 1:13:31There is one critic review and it is fresh, but what do you
- 1:13:34think the audience score is?
- 1:13:37Abysmal.
- 1:13:37Is that a number we can choose is abysmal?
- 1:13:40I, I think that's a Izzy.
- 1:13:42Super generous.
- 1:13:4217% for abysmal.
- 1:13:44I, I do believe that is my super generous 17% because you're being generous at 17%.
- 1:13:50Any other guesses?
- 1:13:51I nine.
- 1:13:52Did you say nine?
- 1:13:54Yeah.
- 1:13:54That's brutal.
- 1:13:55That's Savage.
- 1:13:55Is it the audience or the critics?
- 1:13:57Percent?
- 1:13:57It's audience.
- 1:13:58There was just the one critic review, but it was fresh.
- 1:14:00I think the audience liked it more than 17%.
- 1:14:04So 18% or what are we?
- 1:14:06Thirties.
- 1:14:07Okay.
- 1:14:0732. We need a specific number.
- 1:14:10You saw Game played.
- 1:14:11Oh, you need a specific number?
- 1:14:1237. Alright, perfect.
- 1:14:14Eric, I'm gonna go with abysmal as my first guest, but I am sort of leaning.
- 1:14:18I'm gonna go 23.
- 1:14:1923. Bob, I. Tanya wins 43% with the audience.
- 1:14:24Just under half.
- 1:14:25Wow.
- 1:14:25Yeah.
- 1:14:26Congratulations, Tanya.
- 1:14:28I couldn't find anything about the worldwide gross, but any guesses
- 1:14:31on the budget for this movie?
- 1:14:33Is it in Looney or in dollars?
- 1:14:34I, I think I have it in dollars.
- 1:14:36I. Dues.
- 1:14:371981. Mm-hmm.
- 1:14:39How expensive would that plane have been to rent and shoot?
- 1:14:44'cause everything else was pretty low budget.
- 1:14:46Those golf carts and the smoking The bear poster.
- 1:14:50Yeah, that was probably a PSA tax write off or something.
- 1:14:55How much did they spend?
- 1:14:57500 grand?
- 1:14:58No, that low.
- 1:15:00Yeah.
- 1:15:00Lee Majors don't roll out of bed for less than that.
- 1:15:02This was earlier in his career, so he wasn't as expensive.
- 1:15:05Gotta take that into, yeah.
- 1:15:06Yeah.
- 1:15:06It wasn't the fall guy yet, right?
- 1:15:08He hasn't really made it.
- 1:15:09Oh yeah.
- 1:15:09He wasn't making that TV stunt money.
- 1:15:11Yeah, that's right.
- 1:15:12I'm really bad with this.
- 1:15:14I don't know how much movies cost.
- 1:15:16Get the last one right?
- 1:15:17She got close like horseshoes and hand grenades, but you know she won.
- 1:15:21Give it to her.
- 1:15:22Alright.
- 1:15:22What do you got there?
- 1:15:23Mountain Man, Mike.
- 1:15:24I mean, God.
- 1:15:29I'm thinking around like 680.
- 1:15:31Oh, you don't want that load still?
- 1:15:33I'm gonna go two and a half million.
- 1:15:34It's seventies dollars though, right?
- 1:15:36So you gotta adjust for inflation.
- 1:15:37In today's world, that's like $13 million.
- 1:15:40Alright guys.
- 1:15:41$4.9 million budget.
- 1:15:43Wow.
- 1:15:44Yeah.
- 1:15:45What is that in today's dollars, Moses Again?
- 1:15:4830, 40 million.
- 1:15:49Like for anybody that cares.
- 1:15:51$31 million by today's standards.
- 1:15:55Yeah, it was pretty high budget for the time the film takes place in 2011.
- 1:15:59Did you guys wanna do your fun facts and then I'll fill in
- 1:16:03with anything else I might have?
- 1:16:04So, super fun facts with respect to the car, right?
- 1:16:06Normally I would throw this in somewhere earlier when we were talking about it.
- 1:16:09I held it to the end.
- 1:16:10I wanted to respect the everything I learned from movies, fun facts, and
- 1:16:14the fact that I learned something.
- 1:16:16When I saw this the first time, I was like, oh yeah, it's a
- 1:16:18Porsche, it's a race car back.
- 1:16:19I always thought something was off because it sits a little high.
- 1:16:22Like the Porsches don't look like they're off rotors generally.
- 1:16:25And then there was something wrong with the geometry of the car.
- 1:16:28It's a little too small.
- 1:16:29And so I started digging into it, did a little research, and it turns out.
- 1:16:32That this is not a Porsche, but it does use Porsche body panels that were
- 1:16:37shortened to fit a 1973 Chevron, but it does have a Porsche engine in it.
- 1:16:46So it's this whole X Can-Am series two car, just bastardization.
- 1:16:52So I have a conflicting side really, and I don't know the validity
- 1:16:57of it, but there was an article about the car and everything in
- 1:17:00somebody for what it's worth.
- 1:17:02In the commentary section, they said it's a replica.
- 1:17:05I worked on the film as a production assistant.
- 1:17:08It was shot in Toronto, Canada, Tucson, Flagstaff in Scottsdale,
- 1:17:11Arizona in October, December, 1979.
- 1:17:14Maybe.
- 1:17:14There were a few shots of an actual Porsche nine 17, but any shot with
- 1:17:19Lee Majors driving is a replica.
- 1:17:21Majors insisted on doing his own driving, even when getting driven to the movie set.
- 1:17:25In a normal car, he would drive it.
- 1:17:26Himself with his assigned film union driver sitting in the
- 1:17:28passenger seat next to him.
- 1:17:30He skidded and crashed the replica car a few times as he tended to be
- 1:17:33pretty reckless behind the wheel.
- 1:17:35Nice guy though, ego wise, for a movie star, the jet aircraft was an F 86 saber.
- 1:17:40Yeah, that was in the, even in the credits that That the plane was the plane.
- 1:17:43What got me about this though is, and I'm wondering if this is why the film can only
- 1:17:48be viewed in the deepest, darkest parts of the interwebs, out of these strange
- 1:17:53vaults and blood banks or whatever you guys called it, is because Porsche's
- 1:17:57really, really tight on stuff with their name on it, and if it's not the real deal.
- 1:18:01They probably have put the kibosh on this film and that's why you
- 1:18:05can't get it in a normal way.
- 1:18:07A Ferrari's very similar and they're very sensitive about the use of their emblem
- 1:18:11and their name and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:18:12So again, to your point, I think we have an agreement, Tanya, that the
- 1:18:16car is not a real Porsche, although it has a Porsche engine in it.
- 1:18:20It's a Chevron, is what I found out is the under chassis.
- 1:18:23And then, you know, as you said, it's a replica of a nine
- 1:18:2517 slash 10 from that era.
- 1:18:28So it's possible there was actual shots, but I couldn't tell if there
- 1:18:32was no, but a replica had done well, you wouldn't be able to tell.
- 1:18:35Well if you look at like the Mark Donahue nine 17, it's much bigger.
- 1:18:38This thing is really small.
- 1:18:40It's like trying to fit nine 17 body on a golf cart.
- 1:18:42It was, it looked wrong proportionally.
- 1:18:45And that's to me, what made me start digging into it because now with
- 1:18:48older and much wiser encyclopedic eyes, I'm like, you know, when I was
- 1:18:51younger I was like, oh yeah, Porsche.
- 1:18:53Now I'm like, that's something ain't right about this car.
- 1:18:55So there's our super fun fact.
- 1:18:58Nice.
- 1:18:59Is that the only one you got?
- 1:19:00I mean, car related?
- 1:19:01Sure.
- 1:19:01Got a couple.
- 1:19:02Oh, was there a square body in this film, Dan?
- 1:19:05No, there wasn't.
- 1:19:06Was a Pontiac though.
- 1:19:07So that's a gm.
- 1:19:08Does that count?
- 1:19:08Yeah.
- 1:19:08Yeah.
- 1:19:09There you go.
- 1:19:09You got, you check something off the list.
- 1:19:10You're good.
- 1:19:11Uh, well other than that, just with a little, uh, research I did, the golf
- 1:19:14cart is actually a Davis 500 golf cart that they made to be what it was.
- 1:19:19Only you would spend the time to look something like that up.
- 1:19:22I didn't purposely look for it, but it came up when I was
- 1:19:25looking for some other stuff.
- 1:19:27So for the F 86 Saber being an aircraft.
- 1:19:30Top speed on that is 650 mile an hour air speed or ground speed.
- 1:19:33Not a hundred percent sure on that.
- 1:19:35When I was looking up, it just said 650 miles per hour for top speed was
- 1:19:38introduced in 1949 and retired in 1980.
- 1:19:41Dang.
- 1:19:42Yeah.
- 1:19:42So it had a pretty lengthy life for what it was during that time.
- 1:19:47And then this being a chase across the country, one of the big things that
- 1:19:51I wanted to throw out there for all the people, which I'm disappointed in
- 1:19:55how slow it took them to get across, because in 2020 there was a record set.
- 1:19:59It took 25 hours and 39 minutes going from, I believe it
- 1:20:03was New York to California.
- 1:20:05In this movie, it should have been wide open.
- 1:20:07'cause the average speed for that run in 2020 was a, uh, average
- 1:20:11speed of 112 miles per hour.
- 1:20:13During that run run, he was hitting one 50.
- 1:20:16He should been able to maintain that the whole way.
- 1:20:17And it would've taken what, like 12 hours?
- 1:20:19No, but see it couldn't because he had to like spend, stop for the gas
- 1:20:2312, sip out siphoning fuel out of like the bottom of a derelict fuel
- 1:20:28tank with no extra jerry cans either.
- 1:20:32Right?
- 1:20:32I mean what?
- 1:20:32What is Postapocalyptic Bs?
- 1:20:35Is this, you know what I mean?
- 1:20:37But there's a couple of tidbits that I had to throw out there.
- 1:20:39That's, SARE is a good looking plane though.
- 1:20:41Ooh, that black?
- 1:20:42Yeah, it's nice man.
- 1:20:42Yeah, the black with the yellow racing stripe or whatever on it.
- 1:20:45Oh yeah.
- 1:20:46Yeah.
- 1:20:46So good.
- 1:20:46And what was the dragon?
- 1:20:48Who cares?
- 1:20:49Looked awesome.
- 1:20:50That's all that matter.
- 1:20:51Yes.
- 1:20:51I'm just saying the dragon on the tail it like made it pop
- 1:20:53even more, but I'm just like.
- 1:20:55It just seemed outta place.
- 1:20:56No, it didn't.
- 1:20:56It looked epic.
- 1:20:57That was for all of us kids that grew up in the eighties that watched Mask.
- 1:21:01You remember that Cartoon series mask?
- 1:21:03Yeah.
- 1:21:03That plane was straight out of mask.
- 1:21:05That's all I'm saying.
- 1:21:06Well, uh, it was expected that Lee Majors was to break into theatrical
- 1:21:10roles beginning with this film.
- 1:21:11However, it is believed that through the film's Poor Box Office performance,
- 1:21:16along with his wife having an affair while he was away filming it.
- 1:21:19That's right.
- 1:21:20This is when Farrah Faucet and Ryan O'Neill got together.
- 1:21:23Majors decided to stay in television and never return to movies as
- 1:21:27a headlining star oh dot, dot dot Until Musketeers forever.
- 1:21:31Yay.
- 1:21:32That that's never been played in a theater.
- 1:21:35I guarantee you.
- 1:21:36Straight to DVD.
- 1:21:38This movie was RIFed by MST Mystery Science Theater,
- 1:21:413000 in its initial season.
- 1:21:43That aired on KTMA.
- 1:21:45Where is that again?
- 1:21:46Porsche Put the kibosh on that.
- 1:21:48That's where that is.
- 1:21:49Okay.
- 1:21:50So it's one of those that you can't find anywhere.
- 1:21:52All right.
- 1:21:53And the DVD released by Code Red in 2011 and currently long outta print as of 2024,
- 1:21:59contains the director's cut of the movie that has all the nudity scenes that we
- 1:22:04didn't see or what, yeah, running about a minute longer and restoring nudity to
- 1:22:08the sex club sequence and other moments trend by the producers to get a PG rating.
- 1:22:14Most versions shown on streaming or illegally uploaded to YouTube are
- 1:22:17the shorter version of the film.
- 1:22:19What?
- 1:22:19No, but ladies and gentlemen, we've reached the most important part.
- 1:22:24Yes.
- 1:22:25What did we learn from the last Chase?
- 1:22:28Eric, would you like to go first?
- 1:22:30No, I would like to go last.
- 1:22:31I'll say mailman.
- 1:22:33Dan, how about you?
- 1:22:34It was way over budget is what I've learned.
- 1:22:38Holy hell.
- 1:22:38The budget I, I was still trying to wrap my head around that.
- 1:22:43'cause the quality of the movie is nowhere near what that budget should have been.
- 1:22:46Well, 2 million went to Lee Majors.
- 1:22:48Yeah.
- 1:22:48Yeah.
- 1:22:48And then like 500,000 went to Burgess Fuel for the jet.
- 1:22:53It adds up, you know, and then there was another whatever for
- 1:22:56how many of these replicas.
- 1:22:57He must've skied and crashed, allegedly, including that one in the lake.
- 1:23:01I am telling you there was a car in that water drug out por with them
- 1:23:06flying around, burning up jet fuel.
- 1:23:08That must be where the money went.
- 1:23:10So now it makes a little more sense, but still, no, it was the lasers.
- 1:23:12Would you have laser technology?
- 1:23:14It was that dream sequence.
- 1:23:16That was some good flying that four second dream sequence.
- 1:23:19H how about you Tanya?
- 1:23:20What?
- 1:23:20What did you learn from this movie to help you in the future Apocalypse.
- 1:23:23So I learned that in a future dystopian of apocalyptic world that had been
- 1:23:27previously plagued by a pandemic and the government decided that nobody
- 1:23:32should have any form of transportation.
- 1:23:34They can have laser turret, satellite things in the middle of the desert,
- 1:23:38and yet can't figure out how people can travel other than on a bicycle
- 1:23:42or by foot and electric golf carts.
- 1:23:44There go, yeah.
- 1:23:44And electric golf carts.
- 1:23:45Yeah.
- 1:23:46Outside of the obvious that we all discover, I think we all learned
- 1:23:49the kid's name at some point.
- 1:23:52Yeah.
- 1:23:52And the credits, that was a learning moment for everybody here.
- 1:23:55But outside of that, I discovered that aluminum foil is both good for protecting
- 1:24:01you from alien, but more importantly, it protects you of against big Brother
- 1:24:05government seeing your debauchery.
- 1:24:07Boom.
- 1:24:08Yay.
- 1:24:08I thought you were gonna say venereal disease.
- 1:24:10Well, that's it.
- 1:24:10I mean, that's it.
- 1:24:11Because some people believe you could wrap something in aluminum boil
- 1:24:15like that and create a Faraday cage.
- 1:24:17Hey, worst condom ever, guys.
- 1:24:19This is the seventies.
- 1:24:20That's still tin.
- 1:24:22There you go.
- 1:24:24They may be having some points.
- 1:24:26How about you babe?
- 1:24:27What did you learn in, besides tin?
- 1:24:31Sorry.
- 1:24:34Chair is the paint of my existence.
- 1:24:36I learned that Eric has a vendetta, gets to share and that I think we're gonna
- 1:24:42have to crowdfund him the 140 bucks for a new one because he's too busy importing
- 1:24:49caffeine drinks from Ireland or Scotland or something like somewhere in Europe.
- 1:24:54And those tariffs are really gonna catch up a hundred percent.
- 1:24:58But from this movie, Ooh, there's so much that you could learn from this movie.
- 1:25:04But I guess what I learned is in the not too distant future that a ban of
- 1:25:08gas stations still have 25-year-old perfectly fine fuel and race cars
- 1:25:14will run spectacularly on it.
- 1:25:16Perfect.
- 1:25:16I was wondering when somebody was gonna mention that, but,
- 1:25:19uh, I am still angry about that.
- 1:25:21That's like, I am angry at every movie where cars drive in reverse
- 1:25:25more than 40 miles an hour.
- 1:25:26Yeah.
- 1:25:30I learned, I say this all the time, but I just scream out.
- 1:25:33It's a metaphor.
- 1:25:37Like, I don't think I've ever heard Hawkins rant before, but like I say
- 1:25:41it the exact same way and I have no idea where you get that from.
- 1:25:44You, the kid, because you a hundred percent say that all the time.
- 1:25:48Yeah.
- 1:25:48It's about a system of protection and tranquility by
- 1:25:52taking away rights and Yeah.
- 1:25:54Blah, blah, blah.
- 1:25:55Yeah.
- 1:25:56Ugh.
- 1:25:57But guys, thank you so much for joining us here on everything I learned from movies.

- 1:27:29I mean, really do try and source as much stuff, honestly, guys
- 1:27:32like as local as possible.
- 1:27:33And I've actually decided this year, honestly, I decided around January for no
- 1:27:38reason whatsoever to cut back on some of my other products and just really focus
- 1:27:42on some of my handmade stuff and really just lean into more of some of my, like
- 1:27:47women anarchy, terrorism, and cute animals and insanely accurate potato cannons.
- 1:27:54Don't know why.
- 1:27:55And of course me.
- 1:27:56Oh, I'm everywhere on all the major podcasters.
- 1:27:58Interesting.
