- 0:00Speaker 1: And Football and four is powered by the Inside of
- 0:02Speaker 1: the Burns Podcast. It is brought to you by the
- 0:04Speaker 1: Fanatics Sports Book at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City.
- 0:07Speaker 2: That's where we are today.
- 0:10Speaker 1: It is one of our last shows for the football
- 0:13Speaker 1: season here this week and then next Monday we'll be
- 0:16Speaker 1: back here to recap the Super Bowl and that will
- 0:18Speaker 1: be our twenty twenty five football season all wrapped up.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Right now, we're gonna wrap up the Eagles search for
- 0:26Speaker 1: their coordinators, and then we got a little wrench in
- 0:29Speaker 1: the wheel this weekend Jimmy Keemski from Phillyvoice dot com,
- 0:34Speaker 1: which is where Jeff Moscher you can read a lot
- 0:37Speaker 1: of his coverage of the Eagles and more over at
- 0:39Speaker 1: Philly Voice dot com. We got a little nugget this
- 0:43Speaker 1: weekend from Jimmy Kemski saying that Vic Fangio thinking about
- 0:47Speaker 1: retiring and that the Eagles reached out to some old
- 0:51Speaker 1: buddies John Gannon Mosch and Jim Schwartz in the possibility
- 0:58Speaker 1: that Fangio called it a career.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Where do we think Fangio stands.
- 1:03Speaker 1: As this twenty twenty six off season is about to
- 1:06Speaker 1: kick off?
- 1:07Speaker 3: Well, I mean it sounds like, barring anything happening here,
- 1:12Speaker 3: he's going to come back. I know Adam Kaplan had
- 1:15Speaker 3: been talking to some coaches who were down at the
- 1:19Speaker 3: Senior Ball. We talked about this on the podcast Inside
- 1:21Speaker 3: the Birds that dropped this morning, and Caplin said he
- 1:24Speaker 3: had been talking to coaches who got the Super Senior
- 1:27Speaker 3: Ball last weekend. We're discussing this very fact that they
- 1:31Speaker 3: were hearing that there weren't certain about pick Fangio coming back,
- 1:36Speaker 3: possibly retiring at something that they talked about before. But
- 1:39Speaker 3: as of now, and you know, the thing with Jimmy's
- 1:41Speaker 3: story that's really interesting is that nobody from the team,
- 1:45Speaker 3: no sources from the team, would confirm that he's definitely back.
- 1:48Speaker 3: So it's hard to just one hundred percent slam dunk
- 1:51Speaker 3: say that Fangio is going to be back, but it
- 1:54Speaker 3: certainly feels like he is going to be, but probably
- 1:57Speaker 3: just for one.
- 1:57Speaker 1: More year, right, And if that's the case, he's back
- 2:01Speaker 1: for only one more year, potentially the Eagles have to
- 2:05Speaker 1: really kind of look at that and almost you think
- 2:08Speaker 1: that there's a guy in waiting here or do they
- 2:11Speaker 1: have to start actually looking outside the organization.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Well, you know, being who the Eagles are. They will
- 2:19Speaker 3: cast the Hawaii Net as they do for pretty much
- 2:21Speaker 3: every research. But they've got two guys in house. One
- 2:26Speaker 3: of them is Clint Hurt, a defensive line the defensive
- 2:28Speaker 3: line coach who's been a play balling defensive coordinator before
- 2:32Speaker 3: with the Seattle Seahawks. The other is Joe Casper, who
- 2:35Speaker 3: is not called plays but he is sort of Vic's
- 2:39Speaker 3: right hand man, hand pick successor perhaps he just became
- 2:44Speaker 3: the defensive backs coach with Christian Parker going to the Cowboys.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Remember he was with the Eagles in twenty twenty two
- 2:52Speaker 3: when Vic was an advisor and hanging around and they
- 2:55Speaker 3: had no previous ties, but Vick liked him enough to
- 2:58Speaker 3: take him to Miami with him to be a safety's
- 3:01Speaker 3: coach in twenty twenty three, and then back here in
- 3:03Speaker 3: Philadelphia twenty twenty four. So victly like somebody just got promoted.
- 3:08Speaker 3: He's a guy who's considered a fast riser in the industry.
- 3:11Speaker 3: I'm sure he'll get in an interview if this were
- 3:14Speaker 3: to be the case, and I'm sure he would be
- 3:16Speaker 3: among those considered for the job.
- 3:18Speaker 1: So you know the fact that John Gannonzane was brought
- 3:20Speaker 1: up and Jim Schwartz, two familiar names. I mean, this
- 3:24Speaker 1: sounds like, at least internally, that just got pretty serious.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Well yeah, I mean, obviously I've got serious discussing those guys,
- 3:33Speaker 3: and you know, it's some of it might have been
- 3:35Speaker 3: just because they already knew from after the Super Bowl,
- 3:38Speaker 3: if it was close to maybe hanging up at that point,
- 3:42Speaker 3: the Schwartz discussion. I don't want to say that illustrates
- 3:46Speaker 3: a rash panic move, but that would have been and
- 3:49Speaker 3: that would be really difficult given that the team under
- 3:53Speaker 3: Vick sanros and for a while, even before Vick has
- 3:56Speaker 3: been transitioning to a three to four base defense and
- 4:00Speaker 3: Shorts runs the four to three. Now, I will say
- 4:02Speaker 3: schwartz defense over the last two years in Cleveland has
- 4:05Speaker 3: really evolved. He is not the same kind of guy
- 4:08Speaker 3: that we saw here when he was basically a four
- 4:12Speaker 3: man rush you know, wide nine, cover one, cover three
- 4:14Speaker 3: kind of guy. He's played a lot of different zones
- 4:17Speaker 3: in Cleveland. He's blitzed a lot more, he's used the
- 4:20Speaker 3: sky splitz, and it's good to see. It's good to
- 4:22Speaker 3: see a guy kind of evolve with the times. But
- 4:25Speaker 3: I still at the at the the crux of his
- 4:28Speaker 3: defense is going to be a four to three base
- 4:30Speaker 3: and that's not what the Eagles have been doing.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Jeff, is this something that you think they you know,
- 4:34Speaker 1: we still need to keep an eye on on the
- 4:37Speaker 1: decision is just going to be something that goes back
- 4:39Speaker 1: and forth, you know, through OTAs.
- 4:41Speaker 2: And you know all that stuff.
- 4:43Speaker 1: That he could get to training camp and say, you
- 4:44Speaker 1: know what, my heart's not in it.
- 4:47Speaker 3: You know, VIC doesn't strike me as someone who's gonna
- 4:50Speaker 3: half half ass anything. Hopefully I can say that I
- 4:53Speaker 3: think he will be investing if he's all in. I
- 4:58Speaker 3: think that there should always be concerned guy has a
- 5:00Speaker 3: foot sort of out the door or thinking about it.
- 5:03Speaker 3: You know, they always say as a player, if you're
- 5:04Speaker 3: thinking about retiring, you should probably retire. But that's not
- 5:08Speaker 3: necessarily players have said that, But that's not true. Because
- 5:11Speaker 3: Brendan Graham is coming out of retirement and done just fine, right, So,
- 5:15Speaker 3: so I think that he'll be fine and invested once
- 5:19Speaker 3: he's you know, one hundred rock solid deciding to be
- 5:23Speaker 3: the Eagles defensive coordinator, which may have already happened. I'm
- 5:26Speaker 3: not worried about sort of his mindset and that once
- 5:30Speaker 3: once he gets into the mode you get, you get
- 5:33Speaker 3: the full Vick Fangio. That's why I would expect.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Okay, Jeff Boscher, of course the Inside the Birds podcast
- 5:38Speaker 1: Philly Voice dot com. Uh and at Philly Voice, you
- 5:42Speaker 1: guys covered the two decisions to me that the Eagles
- 5:45Speaker 1: made last week. One the offensive coordinator. You wrote home
- 5:49Speaker 1: run or strikeout. They took a big swing here with
- 5:52Speaker 1: Sean Mannion and this could be either one.
- 5:55Speaker 2: No one knows the answer.
- 5:57Speaker 1: But what are the pros and cons of making a
- 6:00Speaker 1: move like this, because if they made this move last
- 6:03Speaker 1: year coming off a Super Bowl, I think people would
- 6:06Speaker 1: have been up in arms. Now it's a little bit
- 6:09Speaker 1: of a different situation.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Yeah, great question. Hold on, let me go bring up
- 6:14Speaker 3: my story from last week. Second, now, I'm just gonna
- 6:17Speaker 3: I did. I did, wrote write down several pros and
- 6:20Speaker 3: cons to it, and I think that the obvious pros
- 6:23Speaker 3: are that his influences in coaching that he's talked about.
- 6:27Speaker 3: You know, Matt Lafleur in Green Bay is who he's
- 6:30Speaker 3: coached under, the only coach that he's coached under, but
- 6:33Speaker 3: he's played for Sean mcvay's I had a story out
- 6:36Speaker 3: today right now on Philly voice that lists all of
- 6:39Speaker 3: the coaches that he played and coached under in his career,
- 6:43Speaker 3: And obviously the common bond of that is there's a
- 6:46Speaker 3: lot of McVeigh. There's Lafleur, there's Kevin O'Connell in Minnesota.
- 6:52Speaker 3: There's Stane Waldron in Seattle, who was from the lafleoor
- 6:59Speaker 3: I'm sorry, who was from the McVeigh tree. So the
- 7:02Speaker 3: basic what you're getting is a guy who is very
- 7:06Speaker 3: familiar with the McVeigh slash Shanahan tree, which is where
- 7:11Speaker 3: I mean, everybody wants a branch of that. Now. You know,
- 7:14Speaker 3: it doesn't mean they're all going to be great, but
- 7:16Speaker 3: there has been a lot of success from that tree.
- 7:18Speaker 3: And what it does is it modernizes your offense. And
- 7:22Speaker 3: you have to think that in some form or fashion,
- 7:26Speaker 3: he's gonna want to bring these elements to the offense,
- 7:29Speaker 3: which is under center, under center play action, timing and rhythm, offense,
- 7:36Speaker 3: more different offensive concept, getting out of the huddle, quicker,
- 7:40Speaker 3: some tempo, things of that nature that have really stalled
- 7:43Speaker 3: with the Eagles offense over the last few years. You know,
- 7:45Speaker 3: a lot more routes that are just more than hitch
- 7:47Speaker 3: routes as well, the downside is there's funny, there's the
- 7:52Speaker 3: obvious ones that he's never caught plays. He's only been
- 7:54Speaker 3: a coach for two years. We don't know exactly what
- 7:57Speaker 3: scheme he's going to bring. He's never designed a scheme.
- 8:00Speaker 3: So there's a whole lot of inexperience that we talked
- 8:03Speaker 3: about that you didn't think that this team could use
- 8:06Speaker 3: at this point. Coming off in Patol, you felt the
- 8:08Speaker 3: team he needn't experienced play caller. And one extra downside
- 8:12Speaker 3: that I'll say is, you know this has been tried before.
- 8:16Speaker 3: Kellen Moore was supposed to come here to bring fresher
- 8:20Speaker 3: concepts to the passing offense and spruce it up. We
- 8:23Speaker 3: all remember that press conference and Nick Ceriani said his
- 8:26Speaker 3: offense had gotten stale. And while they did win the
- 8:29Speaker 3: Super Bowl that year, it was not because of some prolific,
- 8:33Speaker 3: amazing passing offense. It was mostly on the strength of
- 8:36Speaker 3: the run game, obviously right, and in some ways the
- 8:39Speaker 3: pass offense even regressed. And I don't want to hear
- 8:41Speaker 3: about the championship game in the Super Bowl. That's two
- 8:43Speaker 3: games over a seventeen game nineteen twenty gamespan that they
- 8:47Speaker 3: played the pass offense was not good. So somebody already
- 8:50Speaker 3: tried to do this and failed. Who's actually pretty good
- 8:53Speaker 3: at this job and way more experienced than man hind
- 8:57Speaker 3: Is as he takes this job over.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Yeah, And I was gonna like, that's show the other
- 9:01Speaker 1: element in here, Josh Grizzard is also here. Now he
- 9:04Speaker 1: was a pass game coordinator who became a offensive coordinator,
- 9:08Speaker 1: and yet he doesn't get the job. He goes back
- 9:11Speaker 1: to pass game coordinator. Can they marry those two together
- 9:14Speaker 1: and doing so? Does that indicate to you that maybe
- 9:18Speaker 1: Nick is willing to give up a little bit of
- 9:22Speaker 1: this offense.
- 9:24Speaker 3: I mean, I would think so. I think that's that's
- 9:27Speaker 3: the whole point. I mean, Grizzard's background is not far
- 9:31Speaker 3: from Manions as far as his influences. He obviously he's
- 9:34Speaker 3: actually coached under a bunch of different guys, but more recently,
- 9:38Speaker 3: his last two years in Miami, he was there under
- 9:40Speaker 3: Mike McDaniel, who, as we know, is a branch of
- 9:43Speaker 3: the Shanahan tree, and then he went on to Tampa
- 9:47Speaker 3: under Liam Cohen, who was a branch from the McVeigh tree,
- 9:50Speaker 3: as I talked about, And then of course he became
- 9:52Speaker 3: the play caller in Tampa. So he's got play calling experience,
- 9:56Speaker 3: has play design experience, he has pass game coordinator experien
- 10:00Speaker 3: and he has experience with two trees that Sean Mannion
- 10:03Speaker 3: has experienced from. So there should be some symmetry in
- 10:07Speaker 3: how they see offense and passing.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know, but that's one thing motion I
- 10:12Speaker 1: want to get your opinion on is the fact that
- 10:16Speaker 1: they went and got one guy who played for McVeigh,
- 10:19Speaker 1: one guy who played for McVay Kevin O'Connell and coach
- 10:22Speaker 1: with Matt Lafleur. Then they bring in another guy who's
- 10:25Speaker 1: coached with Mike McDaniel and Liam Cohen, and it's like
- 10:29Speaker 1: these are way different offensive philosophies than what has been here.
- 10:35Speaker 3: That's correct, That's the point, right. The point is to
- 10:39Speaker 3: make this offense work better than it has really for
- 10:43Speaker 3: the last three years, and not just to make it
- 10:46Speaker 3: so that you need sat Pon Barkley to have a
- 10:49Speaker 3: kind of year that you're just not gonna see every
- 10:53Speaker 3: year from a running back. I mean, it was a
- 10:55Speaker 3: historic year for sa Pon Barkley. I can imagine that
- 10:59Speaker 3: with some offensive line improvements and some things that Saikwaun
- 11:02Speaker 3: Barkley can have a better year next year than this season,
- 11:06Speaker 3: but again, like you don't want to be you got
- 11:08Speaker 3: too much talent on this offense and this roster to
- 11:11Speaker 3: just have to rely on that to win new games
- 11:14Speaker 3: in the sports twenty four to twenty eight points a game,
- 11:17Speaker 3: until the whole point is to bring in a radically
- 11:20Speaker 3: different offensive viewpoint because the head coach doesn't already proved
- 11:24Speaker 3: that he's not that guy to do that.
- 11:27Speaker 1: How does Jalen Hurts then factor into this? I mean,
- 11:31Speaker 1: do you want wonder the fit with Jalen Hurts. Does
- 11:35Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts say like, Hey, I'm the Super Bowl champion
- 11:39Speaker 1: and this guy has no play calling experience at all,
- 11:42Speaker 1: and now I'm supposed to listen to this guy like
- 11:44Speaker 1: is that something.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Here or not? Really?
- 11:47Speaker 3: Hey man, my name is Kreskin. I cannot tell you
- 11:50Speaker 3: what's gonna happen in the future, all right, You know
- 11:53Speaker 3: that I can only agree with you that it's not
- 11:57Speaker 3: necessarily the greatest fit. But that's only I hate. What
- 12:02Speaker 3: I hate to do is put a lid on things
- 12:05Speaker 3: or say that a capacity has been reached when I
- 12:08Speaker 3: haven't seen it yet, you know, like, of course it's
- 12:11Speaker 3: not the offense that Jalen Hurts has ever really run before.
- 12:15Speaker 3: But well he says that its he can't do it.
- 12:18Speaker 1: We're about to find out right on whether or not right,
- 12:21Speaker 1: We're about to find out whether or not Hurt's has
- 12:24Speaker 1: been holding them back or you know what.
- 12:26Speaker 2: I mean, Like, if you're let these guys run ahead.
- 12:30Speaker 3: I call it a potential downside, that would be an upside,
- 12:34Speaker 3: And that's really looking at it from an objective journalist.
- 12:37Speaker 3: I mean, nobody wants to see the Eagles fresh and
- 12:40Speaker 3: purv as a fan of the team. But if you
- 12:42Speaker 3: find out in twenty twenty six that Jalen Hurts really
- 12:48Speaker 3: struggles from week one to week seventeen with this offense
- 12:51Speaker 3: and the offense is not good, then that's going to
- 12:54Speaker 3: force a lot of reckoning for the franchise. And then
- 12:57Speaker 3: maybe they have to look into a different quarterback. Right
- 13:00Speaker 3: if they feel like right like the offensive contest, but
- 13:03Speaker 3: don't like the way the quarterback adjusted to it, and
- 13:06Speaker 3: then you reach kind of a new era I guess
- 13:09Speaker 3: of Eagles football. I don't think anybody wants that. I
- 13:11Speaker 3: think they just want this to work. Manuing to look good,
- 13:14Speaker 3: Hurts to look good, the offense look good and you're
- 13:17Speaker 3: fine going forward, but the potential upside to a downside
- 13:20Speaker 3: could be a starting over and getting personal at fits.
- 13:24Speaker 1: It's almost like the Eagles have said, look, we have
- 13:27Speaker 1: gotten by for so long doing the minimum. We need
- 13:32Speaker 1: to find out what we have here to see if
- 13:34Speaker 1: we want to keep going down this path.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean they've underperformed the most expensive offense in
- 13:40Speaker 3: the NFL for the last three years, right, and they
- 13:43Speaker 3: have under performed. I know they want a Super Bowl,
- 13:46Speaker 3: everybody can say that until they're blue in the face.
- 13:48Speaker 3: But they've underperformed offensively outside of some really nice spurts,
- 13:53Speaker 3: and so I don't think Jeffrey money. Jeffrey Murray likes
- 13:56Speaker 3: to spend all this money on his offense to see
- 13:58Speaker 3: an average sixteen to eighteen point in the game. We're
- 14:00Speaker 3: to see his passing offense in the bottom third or
- 14:04Speaker 3: in the bottom five overall of the NFL. That's not
- 14:08Speaker 3: what he It's expected. You need the ROI and this
- 14:12Speaker 3: is one way to figure out if you need to
- 14:13Speaker 3: blow it all up or if your personnel can adapt
- 14:18Speaker 3: to a different offense.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Yeah, and listen, you know, I think the fact that
- 14:22Speaker 1: they bring in Josh Grizzard with Manion? Does that you know,
- 14:26Speaker 1: if they just brought Manion in and we're only talking
- 14:28Speaker 1: about him, are you skeptical? Does Grizzard change that for
- 14:33Speaker 1: you at all?
- 14:35Speaker 3: I hate to be diplomatic about this, but I think
- 14:37Speaker 3: you'll understand where I'm coming from. I think there's upside that,
- 14:40Speaker 3: I think there's downside. I mean, I think there's certainly
- 14:42Speaker 3: the upside I mentioned is that you got two guys
- 14:45Speaker 3: who come from similar trees whould probably see offense very similarly.
- 14:49Speaker 3: The downside, and you know we've seen this before recently,
- 14:53Speaker 3: is like when you get two guys and the one
- 14:56Speaker 3: guy that's in charge of less experience than the other guy,
- 15:00Speaker 3: and the other guy I would want to probably love
- 15:02Speaker 3: to be a play caller again. Uh. And then you
- 15:04Speaker 3: get this weird like if things aren't great for six weeks,
- 15:08Speaker 3: do the Eagles do the whole to sign Matt Patricia
- 15:11Speaker 3: thing and say, all right, Sean, you were a little
- 15:13Speaker 3: over your head. We're gonna give the play calling to Grizzard.
- 15:15Speaker 3: I don't want to see any Nobody wants to see dysfunction.
- 15:18Speaker 3: Nobody wants to see any of that level of crap
- 15:21Speaker 3: that we saw in twenty twenty three on defensive coaching staff,
- 15:24Speaker 3: and that we've seen kind of in before in the
- 15:26Speaker 3: history of this organization when things aren't going well for
- 15:29Speaker 3: a stretch. So you hired Sean Manion. Let him do
- 15:32Speaker 3: his job. If he thinks then you can reset it
- 15:36Speaker 3: after the year. So I do worry about the dynamic
- 15:39Speaker 3: between these two guys who've never worked together. But you
- 15:42Speaker 3: know what, like you, anytime you're putting a new coaching
- 15:44Speaker 3: staff together, there's probably gonna be a little bit of that.
- 15:47Speaker 3: It's just that it's so fresh and raw right in
- 15:50Speaker 3: Eagles to have seen kind of that power struggle from
- 15:52Speaker 3: two years ago.
- 15:54Speaker 2: No doubt.
- 15:54Speaker 1: And Grizzard who baybas So, can you give some insight
- 15:57Speaker 1: motion on the role of the pass game coordinator because
- 16:02Speaker 1: you know he's getting lauded for his role as the
- 16:04Speaker 1: pass game coordinator in Tampa under Liam Collin in twenty
- 16:08Speaker 1: twenty four, where hey, he designed all the third down
- 16:11Speaker 1: plays and they were fifty percent on that you know,
- 16:14Speaker 1: how you know important? And what does the pass game
- 16:18Speaker 1: coordinator actually add to the offense?
- 16:22Speaker 3: You know, the funny thing is Keevin Patula was the
- 16:24Speaker 3: pass game coordinator for the Eagles right in two thousand
- 16:27Speaker 3: and twenty four when they won a Super Bowl. But
- 16:30Speaker 3: you know, now everybody thinks he's the village idiot, So
- 16:32Speaker 3: you can we can all talk about how important or
- 16:35Speaker 3: how much influence the pass game coordinator really has. But
- 16:37Speaker 3: I think Grizzard will be important and valuable again because
- 16:42Speaker 3: Manion has not designed an offense, hasn't called an offense.
- 16:45Speaker 3: And you know, I would I'd love to even see
- 16:48Speaker 3: the Eagles have a senior kind of offensive assistant, although
- 16:51Speaker 3: maybe that's what they consider Sirianni, but I wouldn't. I
- 16:55Speaker 3: wouldn't be afraid to add another guy. But obviously the
- 16:57Speaker 3: past game coordator is gonna have responsibilities. You just mentioned
- 17:00Speaker 3: situational football. It could be third down, could be red zone,
- 17:05Speaker 3: and it'll be air in the overall passing game. Like
- 17:09Speaker 3: he's not just gonna design the pass game because he's
- 17:11Speaker 3: the PGC. Because obviously, Sean Mannion a backup, I mean,
- 17:15Speaker 3: a guy who's a quarterback by trade, is going to
- 17:17Speaker 3: have a lot of those responsibilities and he's gonna want
- 17:20Speaker 3: to do a lot of things and they're gonna work
- 17:21Speaker 3: on it collaboratively. But I imagine Grizzard will have a
- 17:24Speaker 3: really big role in it too.
- 17:27Speaker 1: If I if we were sitting here Jeff Mosher football
- 17:30Speaker 1: apart right now and we're talking about Matt Naggi the
- 17:35Speaker 1: safer pick, would you feel that that was the better
- 17:39Speaker 1: way to go?
- 17:41Speaker 3: I think there would have been questions about Matt Naggie
- 17:43Speaker 3: as well. Safer. Yes, if you think and play calling
- 17:49Speaker 3: alone is the ultimate decider and whether a guy is
- 17:54Speaker 3: going to be successful or not, you know, I don't.
- 17:56Speaker 3: So I mean, I think I can understand. I mean,
- 17:57Speaker 3: we've seen guys play callers go other places and not
- 18:01Speaker 3: really farewell. And I just mentioned Shane Waldron. He went
- 18:04Speaker 3: to Seattle and you know, their offense got progressively worse
- 18:07Speaker 3: while he was there. But he's kind of considered a
- 18:09Speaker 3: good offensive mind in the branch from that McVeigh tree. So,
- 18:13Speaker 3: I mean, I can't sit here and tell you that
- 18:15Speaker 3: if Matt Nague was in charge of the offense that
- 18:17Speaker 3: the Eagles would be this like explosive, prolific attack next year.
- 18:21Speaker 3: I can tell you that they'd probably be prepared for
- 18:23Speaker 3: every single scenario and every single defense, but I don't
- 18:27Speaker 3: know if that means that they execute at a higher level.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Were you surprised that Andy Reid who came out pretty
- 18:34Speaker 1: demonstratively saying this guy should be a head coach and
- 18:37Speaker 1: no one's nibbled.
- 18:40Speaker 3: No, I'm not surprised. I think people underspit. There's a
- 18:44Speaker 3: ton of respect for Andy. But I think people saw
- 18:47Speaker 3: it puffed firing or a change of direction, because Andy
- 18:52Speaker 3: kind of came out really aggressively saying, oh, we thought
- 18:54Speaker 3: Matt Nague was getting a job. That's why we went
- 18:56Speaker 3: and got Eric the enemy back here. But like you know,
- 18:59Speaker 3: the NFL, man, how do you know someone's gonna get
- 19:01Speaker 3: a job? You don't. You don't know someone's gonna get
- 19:04Speaker 3: a job. And he replaced Naggie before Naggi had an offer,
- 19:07Speaker 3: which Naggi wound up not getting. So I think the
- 19:11Speaker 3: NFL was smart enough to see that Andy was bouging
- 19:13Speaker 3: for his guy publicly, but was looking like he was
- 19:16Speaker 3: making a check.
- 19:17Speaker 1: I agree I When Andy did that, though, it almost
- 19:21Speaker 1: felt like the Doug Peterson thing where he came out
- 19:24Speaker 1: and endorsed Peterson so strongly that Philadelphia got engaged, and
- 19:29Speaker 1: it was only Philadelphia that had any interest in Peterson.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Nobody else did to my According to my recollection anyway, yours,
- 19:36Speaker 1: you might be. I don't remember him interviewing for any
- 19:38Speaker 1: other jobs back in twenty What was that, twenty sixteen?
- 19:42Speaker 3: Twenty so yeah, correct, correct, so no, yeah, twenty sixteen.
- 19:46Speaker 3: You're right. And the Eagles, you know, this is why
- 19:48Speaker 3: some people have decided to just hit their wagon to
- 19:51Speaker 3: show amnon because the Eagles seemingly have a good track
- 19:54Speaker 3: record between you know, Sirianni and Doug. Of course Andy
- 19:57Speaker 3: Reid of hitting on a guy and giving a guy
- 20:00Speaker 3: a chance who doesn't not everybody else saw the same way.
- 20:04Speaker 3: Mike I talked about on the podcast today with Adam
- 20:06Speaker 3: at the end, look at the ten hires that the
- 20:09Speaker 3: NFL may you have ten head coaching opening. It's like
- 20:13Speaker 3: a third of the league, and if you go through
- 20:15Speaker 3: the list, it is just retreads and quote unquote hot coordinators. Right.
- 20:20Speaker 3: The only one that strikes you as somewhat egles like
- 20:24Speaker 3: and innovative would maybe be Micha Lafloor going to Cardinals
- 20:27Speaker 3: because he wasn't an offensive play caller. He was off
- 20:30Speaker 3: from the coordinator, but he did not fall a place
- 20:32Speaker 3: everybody else got hired was either a retread or a
- 20:35Speaker 3: play caller. It's like the league does not lun The
- 20:38Speaker 3: Eagles have all the success. The John Harboy is a
- 20:43Speaker 3: special teams coordinator, and then the Steelers hired Tom Land.
- 20:48Speaker 3: Tomlin had been a defensive coordinator for one year for
- 20:51Speaker 3: a six and ten Minnesota Vikings team that was not
- 20:54Speaker 3: very good. And in fact, Adam mentioned this Mike McCarthy
- 20:57Speaker 3: the year he became Packers coach, the year he was
- 21:01Speaker 3: offensive coordinator for the Niners, who finished thirty second, well
- 21:04Speaker 3: dead last in total offense. But they saw something in
- 21:08Speaker 3: him and it turned out to be a great hire
- 21:10Speaker 3: for the Packers. They win a Super Bowl with Aaron
- 21:12Speaker 3: Rodgers and everything. Like I look at the ten highers
- 21:15Speaker 3: of the around the league this year and I think,
- 21:17Speaker 3: you these teams are idiots, and any of the ten
- 21:20Speaker 3: guys higher. I just mean, like there's nobody willing to
- 21:23Speaker 3: take a risk anymore or see the farest through the
- 21:27Speaker 3: trees with these coaches. You know, six of these ten
- 21:29Speaker 3: guys are gonna get fired into it three years.
- 21:31Speaker 1: Well, and put it this way, when Andy Reid, excuse me,
- 21:34Speaker 1: well Andy Reid too, but when Nick sear Hini got hired,
- 21:38Speaker 1: I don't know anybody who's gonna put him on the
- 21:40Speaker 1: list of the guy who was gonna make it, let
- 21:41Speaker 1: alone win a Super Bowl. And here we are, right,
- 21:44Speaker 1: I mean, so you just never you just never know.
- 21:47Speaker 2: You go with what you think. And that's why Sean
- 21:49Speaker 2: Mannion's here is because most.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Quite frankly, as you said, the Eagles are swinging for
- 21:54Speaker 1: the fact that they think they are five years ahead
- 21:56Speaker 1: of being five years ahead. They think they found the
- 21:58Speaker 1: next hot guy. And it might mean they got him
- 22:00Speaker 1: for one year and then he's you know, out of here,
- 22:02Speaker 1: but they rather get him. Why he gives you the
- 22:05Speaker 1: one good year than let him become a head coach
- 22:07Speaker 1: and somebody else gets to prosper.
- 22:10Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's interesting that they came to that clusion
- 22:12Speaker 3: after they fell behind. Really, I mean, their offense has
- 22:16Speaker 3: really been behind the curve and stayle for three years.
- 22:19Speaker 3: And that's so Uneagles like to say that they were
- 22:22Speaker 3: behind the curve.
- 22:23Speaker 2: You know, well, they're behind the curve.
- 22:26Speaker 1: But in the end they interviewed two guys twice for
- 22:30Speaker 1: the same job and ended up getting them both.
- 22:33Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I met Matt. Being behind the curve led
- 22:35Speaker 3: to those two hires. Yeah.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Well, and by the way, that's worked out for them
- 22:40Speaker 1: in the past, because you know, as John mcmallan, I'll
- 22:43Speaker 1: give him the credit for this brought up. You know,
- 22:45Speaker 1: we keep lauding this the Eagles that, oh, they fouled
- 22:48Speaker 1: Nick Sirianni, they filed Doug Peterson.
- 22:50Speaker 2: Those guys weren't their first choices. You know.
- 22:52Speaker 1: The Eagles wanted to hire Macado and Adam Gaze and
- 22:56Speaker 1: they basically went other places. And then the Eagles had
- 22:59Speaker 1: a refocus, But Peterson and Sirianni were not their first options.
- 23:07Speaker 3: I don't I can't remember at this time who their
- 23:09Speaker 3: first option was when they hired Sirianni. You have to
- 23:13Speaker 3: remind me, because I'm drawing a blank right now, but
- 23:15Speaker 3: I don't. I don't recall a strong front runner for that. Oh.
- 23:20Speaker 3: I mean, I know they really liked Arthur Smith and
- 23:22Speaker 3: he took that job with the Falcons, but I don't
- 23:24Speaker 3: remember like sort of them getting left at the altar
- 23:27Speaker 3: by anybody. I know it was down to him and McDaniels,
- 23:29Speaker 3: and and they they chose Sirianni over McDaniels. As I
- 23:33Speaker 3: understood it.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Well, you had and and you definitely the you had
- 23:36Speaker 1: Gus Bradley in twenty sixteen, they end up with Doug Peterson.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Gus Bradley was remember get on the Gus bus. Everybody
- 23:43Speaker 1: was going down that direction.
- 23:44Speaker 2: I remember going.
- 23:45Speaker 1: So you had McAdoo who ended up driving down the
- 23:48Speaker 1: turnpike and went to the Giants. You lucked out there,
- 23:52Speaker 1: So you know, sometimes if you waited out the second guy,
- 23:56Speaker 1: the right guy kind of falls into your lap.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Maybe it's Sean Mannon, maybe it's not.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Should be an interesting season, Fangio, we'll see what his
- 24:03Speaker 1: future looks like. Jimmy Kempsky over at Philly Voice with
