- 0:08Suze: March 12, 2026. Welcome everybody to the Women and Money podcast,
- 0:13Suze: as well as everybody smart enough to listen. I know,
- 0:16Suze: I know. You're all freaking out, cause it's really Sunday
- 0:21Suze: when you're listening to this, most likely March 15th. But
- 0:24Suze: I wanted to tell you March 12th because that is
- 0:27Suze: the day that I am recording this, and I'm doing
- 0:30Suze: this because Robert asked me for a favor. Could we
- 0:34Suze: do it earlier? So I said, absolutely.
- 0:38Suze: So, it's important that you know when I recorded this,
- 0:41Suze: so you'll understand that in a second cause it has
- 0:44Suze: a lot to do with the price of oil, the
- 0:47Suze: price of Chevron, and so on and so forth. So,
- 0:51Suze: I want you to get out your Suze notebooks, cause
- 0:55Suze: you really need to get this lesson that we're about
- 0:59Suze: to do today on Suze School. Now, before I begin...
- 1:05Suze: I want all of you, given that this podcast drops on March 15th, can you just go and see what did Chevron actually close at last Friday? What is the price of WTI? So let's just see what can happen in a few days. And by the way. You should all go to youtube.com/suze Orman and take a look at the little synopsis that we did of last week's podcast.
- 1:05Suze: Look for war money moves, and you'll see in just a few minutes everything that we really talked about that was important last Sunday. Alright, one last thing, however, at the beginning of the year we posted this
- 1:08Suze: thing called your roadmap for 2026 that goes to a
- 1:13Suze: website which is where my blog and everything gets mailed
- 1:16Suze: out from to all of you. It is not a scam.
- 1:21Suze: It is real. You haven't been hacked. It doesn't take
- 1:25Suze: you to a false website. It is absolutely true, so
- 1:30Suze: please just know that.
- 1:33Suze: I know your little Suze notebooks out there.
- 1:36Suze: All right.
- 1:38Suze: Now, listen to me.
- 1:41Suze: You know Fitzy or Keith Fitz-Gerald was on the podcast
- 1:45Suze: last weekend with me, and during that episode he shared
- 1:50Suze: with all of you his absolute number one favorite energy stock,
- 1:56Suze: and that stock was Chevron.
- 2:00Suze: Now, after that episode aired, many of you wrote in
- 2:05Suze: with the exact same question. You said, Suze, wait a minute.
- 2:08Suze: Chevron is at its all-time highs. Are you really telling
- 2:11Suze: us we should buy it here? And you started to
- 2:14Suze: quote all these reasons why you were gonna wait and
- 2:17Suze: how it was not a smart move to buy it
- 2:19Suze: right then and there, and I'm like going, are you
- 2:24Suze: kidding me?
- 2:28Suze: I want you to understand that many investors, I get it,
- 2:34Suze: believe that they should only buy a stock when it
- 2:36Suze: has fallen. They think, Hey, if it's already gone up,
- 2:40Suze: oh my God, I've missed it. Now you did hear
- 2:44Suze: Fitzy say you should have bought it six months ago,
- 2:47Suze: cause the truth of the matter is he did say
- 2:49Suze: six months ago you should buy it, but he said
- 2:52Suze: it again. That's when it was like at 150. But
- 2:55Suze: he said it again.
- 2:57Suze: That he would still buy it here and when he
- 3:02Suze: said that it was right around $191 a share.
- 3:08Suze: At the close of the stock market last night early
- 3:13Suze: this morning, it closed at $192 a share now between
- 3:19Suze: last Sunday and yesterday night it went down like from
- 3:25Suze: $192 to $187 and all of you were then right
- 3:29Suze: in saying, see, I told you I was right. See,
- 3:31Suze: we should have waited, and now here it is back
- 3:34Suze: up again.
- 3:36Suze: That is not investing when you are waiting for something
- 3:41Suze: to go down.
- 3:44Suze: You are missing the entire point, everybody. You don't know
- 3:49Suze: what's going to happen. So it looked like maybe they
- 3:52Suze: would settle this war. Maybe we're coming out of it.
- 3:55Suze: Then all of a sudden something happens and here we
- 3:57Suze: are back really in it.
- 4:00Suze: So you invest and did I not say you should
- 4:04Suze: invest on a dollar cost averaging basis did I not
- 4:07Suze: say that but I do get it. I get that
- 4:11Suze: you think when a stock has gone up so much
- 4:14Suze: you think.
- 4:15Suze: It's already gone up too high. I must have missed it.
- 4:19Suze: And then you think, oh, oil's gonna go back down.
- 4:22Suze: So like I said before, I'm gonna wait till the
- 4:24Suze: war is over.
- 4:26Suze: Really? Do you think investing is that simple?
- 4:31Suze: Do you think investing is that predictable? But here's the thing,
- 4:36Suze: experienced investors seriously understand that most people don't. A stock
- 4:44Suze: hitting new highs is not always a warning sign. Everybody.
- 4:49Suze: Sometimes it means something important in the world is changing,
- 4:53Suze: and you have to admit right now, something really important
- 4:58Suze: is changing.
- 5:00Suze: The past two weeks or how many days it's been,
- 5:04Suze: we are in essence at war again. That is a
- 5:08Suze: big change.
- 5:09Suze: And the other thing that has changed is the oil
- 5:13Suze: market just had a week unlike anything investors had seen
- 5:20Suze: in decades. So you have to understand what's going on here,
- 5:26Suze: and that is what the Suze School today is all about.
- 5:30Suze: So by now you really have gotten out your notebooks, right?
- 5:35Suze: All right, let's start at the beginning.
- 5:38Suze: You hear me and Fitz and other people say, WTI
- 5:43Suze: is going up, WTI is going down. Do you even
- 5:47Suze: know what WTI stands for?
- 5:51Suze: It stands for West Texas Intermediate Crude, and that happens
- 5:57Suze: to be everybody, the main US oil benchmark in the
- 6:02Suze: same way we quote the Standard and Poor's 500, the
- 6:05Suze: Dow Jones Industrial Average, the NASDAQ. Those are benchmarks.
- 6:13Suze: So, WTI is the main US oil benchmark and WTI surged
- 6:19Suze: more than 35% in just that one week. Now why
- 6:25Suze: is that so important? Because do you know that that
- 6:28Suze: was the largest weekly gain in the futures market since
- 6:33Suze: records began.
- 6:36Suze: WTI started to go from 60 to 85 to 90
- 6:40Suze: to like 115 $120 and now, as I'm recording this,
- 6:43Suze: it's back at about $88. You just need to know that.
- 6:49Suze: Your next question needs to be why, Suze, why is
- 6:52Suze: this happening? And I think many of you absolutely know
- 6:56Suze: why it is happening. It is because we are in
- 7:00Suze: conflict involving Iran, which has disrupted everybody. One of the
- 7:06Suze: most critical oil shipping routes in the world. Do you
- 7:10Suze: know what the name of that is? It's called the
- 7:12Suze: Strait of Hormuz. Got it?
- 7:16Suze: And why is that important? Because 20% of the world's
- 7:20Suze: oil supply passes through that very little narrow waterway, and
- 7:26Suze: right now tankers are just there. They're all afraid to
- 7:30Suze: go through it and in some cases they've actually stopped entirely.
- 7:35Suze: So what happens is when supply is threatened, obviously oil
- 7:40Suze: prices move higher. So that's what markets are reacting to.
- 7:46Suze: Now there are people out there, I'm just telling you this,
- 7:49Suze: that have warned us that if disruptions continue, oil could
- 7:54Suze: potentially reach $150 a barrel. It is not impossible that
- 7:59Suze: if they went and they bombed the oil fields and everything, listen,
- 8:03Suze: we're dealing with Iran.
- 8:06Suze: And I always think you never know what's going to happen,
- 8:10Suze: so you can't just say, oh, the war will be
- 8:12Suze: over and even if we pull back we leave there
- 8:16Suze: we stop bombing that doesn't mean in one month from
- 8:20Suze: now they're not gonna retaliate so you always have to
- 8:23Suze: have something positioned in your portfolio.
- 8:27Suze: In case something like this happens, do you know Iraq
- 8:32Suze: has already cut, I think it was 1.5 million barrels
- 8:36Suze: per day. Kuwait has followed, so the oil market, I
- 8:41Suze: have to tell you, may be facing a significant supply shock. Now.
- 8:45Suze: I know we may be releasing reserves and doing all this,
- 8:49Suze: but let's just see what happens now. I want you
- 8:53Suze: to know though, I get it.
- 8:55Suze: I get you're writing me and you're saying, Suze, I'm scared, war,
- 8:59Suze: shipping disruptions, oil surging, maybe we should just stay out
- 9:04Suze: of the market completely.
- 9:07Suze: Do all of you feel that way? Do some of
- 9:09Suze: you feel that way? If I was gonna answer that,
- 9:13Suze: I don't know what Fitz would say, but I'm sure
- 9:14Suze: he would answer it identical to what I'm gonna say.
- 9:18Suze: The answer would be, say, no, you are not.
- 9:22Suze: Because markets have always moved through periods like this, the
- 9:27Suze: key to investing is not avoiding uncertainty. The key is
- 9:33Suze: understanding which each company benefits from, right? So instead of
- 9:38Suze: asking yourself, should I be afraid about this, I want
- 9:41Suze: you to think about this when interest rates rise, banks benefit, right?
- 9:47Suze: When technology advances, tech companies benefit, right? And when oil
- 9:53Suze: prices rise, energy producers benefit. So you just have to
- 9:59Suze: understand where are we, what companies can benefit, and do
- 10:04Suze: you want those companies in your portfolio or those ETFs
- 10:08Suze: in your portfolio, or do you not? Now, put a
- 10:12Suze: pin in that for a second.
- 10:13Suze: 'Cause if you are insecure, if it is scaring you,
- 10:17Suze: remember the goal of money is for you to be secure,
- 10:19Suze: then OK, you don't have to invest. But if you're
- 10:23Suze: just getting out because of this war that we're going
- 10:27Suze: through right now, I think you'll be making one of
- 10:30Suze: the biggest mistakes out there, especially if you listen to
- 10:34Suze: last Sunday's podcast where Fitzy really did explain
- 10:39Suze: what happens after every war we have had.
- 10:44Suze: But I do wanna go back to Keith Fitz-Gerald, again,
- 10:48Suze: I call him Fitzy, his number one energy stock pick,
- 10:53Suze: cause when he says he has a number one pick,
- 10:57Suze: we need to listen to him.
- 11:00Suze: So, I did my own research. Chevron is a 147
- 11:06Suze: year old energy giant that is worth $379 billion. This
- 11:14Suze: is not some speculative oil company. This is one of
- 11:18Suze: the largest energy companies in the world.
- 11:22Suze: And through everything, Chevron has continued to do one thing
- 11:28Suze: that I think is very important to all of you
- 11:33Suze: when it comes to investing in a company like this.
- 11:37Suze: Chevron has raised its dividend for 39 consecutive years, which
- 11:43Suze: is why I don't have a problem
- 11:45Suze: with you investing in it on a dollar cost averaging basis,
- 11:49Suze: especially if a dividend is important to you, they raised
- 11:53Suze: that dividend through recessions every year, through oil crashes.
- 11:58Suze: Through financial crises, the dividend kept growing. Today, Chevron pays
- 12:05Suze: roughly about $7.12 per share annually, which is a yield
- 12:11Suze: of about 3.8%. Now, wait, I just have to say something. 3.8%
- 12:20Suze: is what many of you are making in a high
- 12:22Suze: yield money market account
- 12:25Suze: or a CD or a certificate whatever it may be,
- 12:30Suze: so that is a great dividend yield and that's at
- 12:34Suze: this price where it is right now at about $192
- 12:39Suze: a share.
- 12:41Suze: Do you know that Chevron CFO that stated that growing
- 12:46Suze: the dividend remains the company's top financial priority, that is
- 12:53Suze: something that's important for all of you to understand, because
- 12:57Suze: if you buy a stock here and then the stock
- 13:00Suze: starts to go down because the oil price is going
- 13:03Suze: down and if they don't have everything together they're going
- 13:06Suze: to lower their dividend.
- 13:09Suze: So how secure is this dividend? Chevron has structured its business,
- 13:16Suze: so it can cover its dividend and capital spending with
- 13:20Suze: oil at around $50 per barrel. So oil could drop
- 13:25Suze: from $88 where it is now, or $100 and some
- 13:28Suze: odd dollars where it was, or even if it goes
- 13:30Suze: to $150 which gives them lots of extra cash flow,
- 13:34Suze: if oil dropped all the way to $50 a barrel,
- 13:39Suze: they could still cover easily their dividend.
- 13:46Suze: Are you thinking about that? You should be thinking about
- 13:48Suze: that cause I always wanna know, do you have the
- 13:52Suze: money to pay me? So that's a really large cushion
- 13:57Suze: cause all they need is $50 in oil and WTI
- 14:01Suze: to support its dividend. Now, you heard me say a
- 14:05Suze: few seconds ago, hopefully you heard me say it on
- 14:08Suze: the podcast last Sunday.
- 14:10Suze: That you should dollar costs average into Fitzy's picks or
- 14:15Suze: really any pick if you ask me, because the truth
- 14:18Suze: is we have no idea what will happen today, next month,
- 14:22Suze: next year we don't know, especially with the uncertainty around
- 14:27Suze: Iran nobody knows, not me, not Keith, not Wall Street, nobody.
- 14:34Suze: So you cannot simply say a stock is at its top.
- 14:38Suze: Instead you build your position over time and here's the
- 14:43Suze: beauty of Chevron everybody Chevron is going to pay you
- 14:47Suze: a dividend to wait.
- 14:50Suze: You are gonna be earning income while you wait, and
- 14:54Suze: if tensions continue, if oil rises, guess what? Energy companies
- 15:00Suze: like Chevron are going to benefit. And again, but what
- 15:05Suze: if the stock goes down?
- 15:07Suze: Listen to me...
- 15:09Suze: If you're holding the stock for a while and your
- 15:11Suze: dollar cost averaging into it, you should be a wishing
- 15:15Suze: and praying that it goes down. What aggravates me more
- 15:19Suze: than anything is when you buy a stock and you
- 15:22Suze: only want it to go up, especially if your dollar
- 15:24Suze: cost averaging into it, which you're all supposed to be doing.
- 15:28Suze: What is wrong with all of you? If it goes down,
- 15:31Suze: you get to buy more shares. If it goes down
- 15:35Suze: and it's paying a dividend.
- 15:37Suze: Then the dividend yield on a lower priced stock means
- 15:40Suze: your yield is higher. Are you kidding me? So your
- 15:45Suze: dividend yield goes up. Are you feeling better about it?
- 15:49Suze: Are you understanding why you do something like this at
- 15:54Suze: times like this? Now, is it too late? No. Didn't
- 15:58Suze: you hear Fitz say he would buy it here?
- 16:02Suze: Because anything can happen, but I understand that a lot
- 16:06Suze: of you also say, but Suze, oil is out of favor.
- 16:10Suze: Everything is gonna be electric. Well, why would we be
- 16:14Suze: buying an energy stock? We gotta get something straight. Oil
- 16:19Suze: still provides about one third of the world's energy supply. Now,
- 16:24Suze: I don't have to like oil.
- 16:25Suze: I don't have to like what it's doing to the world,
- 16:28Suze: but I do have to be knowledgeable about the role
- 16:32Suze: that oil energy plays in today's economy. It fuels aviation.
- 16:38Suze: It fuels global shipping. It fuels trucking and heavy industry.
- 16:43Suze: Do you know that there are about 100,000 commercial flights
- 16:46Suze: every single day worldwide, and these planes are not switching
- 16:51Suze: to batteries anytime soon.
- 16:54Suze: About 90% of global trade, I hope I have that right,
- 16:58Suze: moves by ships powered largely by what? By petroleum fuels.
- 17:05Suze: So oil is also used, everybody, in plastics, in fertilizers,
- 17:10Suze: in medical supplies, in clothing, in electronics, and I'm sure
- 17:15Suze: there's more that I just can't think of right now.
- 17:18Suze: So even renewable infrastructure requires petroleum products. The transition to
- 17:26Suze: cleaner energy will take decades, which means, can you just
- 17:31Suze: stop thinking oil is going away anytime soon? Companies producing
- 17:36Suze: oil remain essential whether you like it or not.
- 17:42Suze: All right, there's one more question that many of you
- 17:45Suze: have written into me, and you're asking me, Suzie, does
- 17:49Suze: this mean everyone should run out and buy oil stocks today?
- 17:55Suze: And the answer to that is no. What it means
- 17:58Suze: is you should understand how the world works, that energy
- 18:04Suze: still powers the global economy and companies producing it will
- 18:09Suze: continue to matter.
- 18:11Suze: But you have to decide, do you still want it
- 18:14Suze: part of your portfolio? Do you not? You don't have
- 18:18Suze: to buy more than 5% of your portfolio in an
- 18:21Suze: energy stock. You don't have to put all your money
- 18:23Suze: in it, but if you want some part of your
- 18:26Suze: money in a dividend paying energy stock that Fitz has
- 18:31Suze: as his number one pick.
- 18:33Suze: And all the reasons that I just gave you, you
- 18:37Suze: might wanna consider Chevron on a dollar cost averaging basis. So,
- 18:44Suze: I want you to just listen to me.
- 18:47Suze: The world may feel like it's at war.
- 18:50Suze: And truthfully it is whether we like it or not.
- 18:55Suze: The headlines may feel frightening.
- 18:58Suze: Markets may feel uncertain because they're going up, they're going down,
- 19:03Suze: they're going up, they're going down every day, depending on
- 19:07Suze: the news cycle, and what happens dictates if the markets
- 19:11Suze: are going up or down. But this is what I
- 19:16Suze: want you to remember, Energy still powers the world, OK?
- 19:22Suze: Planes still fly, ships still sail, economies still run.
- 19:28Suze: And the companies that produce that energy, the ones that
- 19:32Suze: have survived decades of turmoil like Chevron and still reward shareholders,
- 19:40Suze: often become stronger during times like this. When you understand
- 19:47Suze: how money really works, you stop reacting to the headlines.
- 19:52Suze: Then you have what it takes to start investing.
- 19:56Suze: The correct way, dollar cost averaging, having at least five
- 20:01Suze: or 10 years till you need this money.
- 20:05Suze: If you're worried about down markets, you always want a
- 20:08Suze: stock that has a dividend, so it pays you to wait.
- 20:11Suze: And you go for it only when you feel secure
- 20:17Suze: and you know the moves to make. All right, everybody,
- 20:21Suze: now until Thursday when Miss Travis joins us again with
- 20:26Suze: Ask KT and Suze Anything, there's only one thing I
- 20:29Suze: really want you to remember, and it's this:
- 20:32Suze: People first, then money, then things and stop listening to
- 20:37Suze: armchair pundits. Now you stay safe.
