- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talking Tech podcast.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: My co-host Tristan McGonagall is here.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: Tristan, how are you doing today, buddy?
- 0:52SPEAKER_03: I'm feeling seven and one, dude.
- 0:55SPEAKER_03: That's how I'm feeling today.
- 0:57SPEAKER_03: Seven and one.
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: It feels good.
- 0:59SPEAKER_03: We need to we need to do something.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: We need to do something.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: We're seven and one.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: We just coming off a big old big old shutout win against the pokes.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: What do we have to do?
- 1:09SPEAKER_03: Steven, we have to play the song, brother.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: We're gonna play the song.
- 1:14SPEAKER_03: Play the song.
- 1:16SPEAKER_05: Red Raider coming at you.
- 1:19SPEAKER_05: Run to the night.
- 1:20SPEAKER_05: With a beauty of the Texas win.
- 1:24SPEAKER_05: Red Raider coming into one of the beautiful time.
- 1:29SPEAKER_05: The Texas Tech Red Raiders run again.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: 42 to zero.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: Your Texas Tech Red Raiders defeat the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: 42 to 0.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: What a game.
- 1:47SPEAKER_03: First shutouts in a long, long time for the Texas Tech Red Raiders in conference.
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: So an amazing feat.
- 1:56SPEAKER_03: Even though you're planning the uh you're playing the JV team from Stillwater, Oklahoma, you are still shutting out a Division I football team in easy fashion.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: You unfortunately sacrificed your backup quarterback to do it.
- 2:11SPEAKER_03: But hey, a win is a win, as they say.
- 2:19SPEAKER_03: I hate that we're not in the Big 12 championship, but we're we're on schedule still here.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Let's talk about all of that right now because we have a Texas Tech podcast and we want to talk about the Red Raiders.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: Yes, let's start with the injury to Will Hammond.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: Um torn ACL out for the season.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: The bad news is that it's a torn ACL and he's out for the season.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: You've lost your backup quarterback.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: Uh it's gonna hurt his development, it's gonna take him a long time, and it's going to affect next year as well.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: The good news is Baron Morton's back for Kansas State, and you have a very, very capable third string quarterback that now becomes your backup quarterback.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: Tristan, what are your thoughts on losing Will Hammond?
- 3:05SPEAKER_03: My heart breaks for the Huddo Hippo, dude.
- 3:08SPEAKER_03: That guy is a gamer, that guy is tough as nails.
- 3:12SPEAKER_03: He would take hits and act like nothing happened, dude.
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: And he would plow through homies like they're butter.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: Um, and what hurts the most is not losing your your QBG.
- 3:23SPEAKER_03: It's like you said, dude, now you have this young man with an incredibly promising football feature having to take essentially a year off in pain, in medical therapy and training that's gonna take a while for him to rehabilitate.
- 3:37SPEAKER_03: I saw a number that it could take around nine months for him to get kind of back in his mojo.
- 3:43SPEAKER_03: And the super unfortunate fact of that is, you know, we went from seeing this guy as our starting quarterback for at least the next three years.
- 3:51SPEAKER_03: Now we have to go and find some guy we don't know yet in the transfer portal to start football games for you next season, to be your starting quarterback next season.
- 4:02SPEAKER_03: So we don't get to rely on a kid we got out of high school who's been a household name in the in the program for a while to lead the team.
- 4:09SPEAKER_03: You have to go get a stranger, and that really sucks because it was Will's turn, you know?
- 4:14SPEAKER_03: He's sticking it out for two years under Baron Morton, and it's gonna be finally his time to shine.
- 4:20SPEAKER_03: And unfortunately, for reasons that aren't his fault, he's gonna have to take another backseat to another guy.
- 4:29SPEAKER_03: And I hope that that doesn't ruin his future at Texas Tech or ruin his development as a quarterback.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: I don't think it's going to ruin his future.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: I think the kid is tough.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: I think the the recovery for these types of injuries is so turnkey at this point with uh most collegiate medical staffs that uh and Texas Techs especially, they have a great medical staff on their football team that I think he's going to recover just fine.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: Um, it's just a really tricky point in the year to get this type of injury because if you're looking nine months from now, that's late July of 2026, which you know, you you've gone, he's obviously gonna miss spring ball, he's gonna miss, you know, probably the majority of fall camp.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: And maybe he's ready to go for the start of next season, but probably not.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: I don't imagine he's gonna be ready to go until at least mid next season.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: So yeah, it sucks.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: It hurts.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: You're gonna have to look for different options in 2026 um and kind of be forced to go shopping for a quarterback, which we've seen work out at certain places and seen not work out at certain places.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: Um, I I wouldn't give the benefit of the doubt to James Blanchard and his staff to go out there and recruit a good quarterback that fits Joey's system and fits Mac Lefwich's system.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: That um, you know, but but these are next year problems.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: Let's talk about the right now because Baron Morton's back.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: He's missed the last two weeks uh after re-aggravating that same lower leg injury that he suffered in the pine bluff game.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: Apparently he's ready to go, but you just can't rely on Baron Morton to stay healthy.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: You can't do it.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: And it's not his fault, it's not uh you know anybody's fault.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: It's just the guy is unreliable to stay on the field.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: And so having your backup, I think, is necessary here to talk about because Mitch Griffiths, they brought him in in the offseason to be your quarterback three to kind of push Will Hammond for that number two slot going into the year.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: Obviously, Will Hammond won that job.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: He is clearly, to me, the better quarterback than Mitch Griffiths is, but Mitch Griffith has played at the power four level.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: He played at Wake Forest, he went, I think, four and six as a starter.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: So obviously, not you know the win percentage that you want, but you have to look back at that wake forest team and be like, okay, were you really set up for success over there?
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: So I think he showed a lot of good stuff in the second half against Oklahoma State.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: Game was out of hand at that point.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, he uh you're playing a, like you said, a JV team in in the pokes this season.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: So I I like Mitch.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: I think he's a very capable backup.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: I think you could have gone into this year with him being your backup quarterback instead of Will Hammond.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: And I think you kind of had the luxury of having three capable quarterbacks that could potentially win a game for you in the Big 12 win need.
- 7:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, I I like that confidence, dude.
- 7:24SPEAKER_03: Um, I don't know if I fully agree that Mitch is as capable as Will Hammond as a QB2.
- 7:30SPEAKER_03: I mean, I don't know, I don't know if you win that Utah game if Mitch goes in instead of Will Hammond.
- 7:35SPEAKER_03: Because Will Hammond was the MVP of that game, and that was one of the hardest games, but not the hardest game on your schedule at the time.
- 7:41SPEAKER_03: So uh, but dude, he really came in and lit up the folks.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: Uh, he threw some real pretty balls uh for some studies, and it it was it was awesome to watch.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: Um, but you did state, you know, the game was kind of washed at that point.
- 7:55SPEAKER_03: Uh the folks were clearly not gonna win from defense alone.
- 7:58SPEAKER_03: You even have to talk about our offense, like they weren't doing anything against our defense.
- 8:02SPEAKER_03: No, um, and then it was even shown against our backups that nothing was gonna happen.
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: Um so I don't know if you can take too much in consideration with that, but I think Mitch is a capable QP3.
- 8:15SPEAKER_03: Um, it just I think we're all going to be a little clinched watching tech football a little more so these days, moving forward for the rest of the season, because I really think that Baron Morton kind of holds the team in his hands at this point.
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: I mean, it it was starting to seem that way, especially after the Arizona State game, that we uh we took Baron Morton for granted that we put too much stake in that Utah game in the way Will has performed outside of that.
- 8:47SPEAKER_03: So um I I really think that if you don't have Baron Morton starting as your quarterback for the remainder of the season, you're probably not winning the big whole championship.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and yeah, and to that point, I mean, sometimes we take one game and we say that's who you are as a quarterback, and that's just not true in this sport, you know.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: Will Hammond look like a demigod against Utah, but then look very much human against Arizona State.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: So it's it, you know, it's kind of give and take these guys are young, they're still figuring themselves out.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: Barron Morton has been consistent this year when he's played.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: So yeah, the the Utah game for the most part, I we talked about it after that Utah win.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: I thought Barron Morton played pretty good.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the two turnovers, pretty underthrown balls, but overall, I thought he was pretty good.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: And eventually I think they would have won that game had Barron Morton continued to play.
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: But yeah, and and I think he would have had a better chance to beat Arizona State had Barron Morton played.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: So this is it's it's tricky.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'm glad Barron's back.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: I'm really scared about relying on the health of Barron Morton to take us through these next uh four games of the regular season and hopefully beyond.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: Um, but we'll just have to see.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: I I I'm glad he's here though, and I'm glad he's back.
- 9:59SPEAKER_03: What's I mean, your mind goes to how do we keep him healthy?
- 10:04SPEAKER_03: Obviously, the majority of the work is on the O-line.
- 10:06SPEAKER_03: You know, the O-line has to protect him, but uh sometimes you can't help but wonder are some of these injuries avoidable with Baron Morton?
- 10:16SPEAKER_03: Because he does like to take off when it doesn't seem necessary sometimes.
- 10:21SPEAKER_03: Like I think he gets into this like hero mode in his head where he's just gonna try to make something happen, even with this with his legs, and that's where we start seeing these injuries.
- 10:30SPEAKER_03: Um, so I get nervous to think, is he gonna keep going to hero ball and put himself on the line to where we're once again having to trot out the backup, and this time it's gonna be Griffiths?
- 10:41SPEAKER_03: Um it just crossed our fingers that the defense can hold the line and hopefully can put some more points over the over the board to make sure that we win.
- 10:49SPEAKER_03: So, do you how what do you think is going through Leftwich's mind, through Morton's mind, to ensure that an injury doesn't happen?
- 10:57SPEAKER_03: Because now it almost seems like the after scoring points, the the secondary objective is just stay healthy, dude.
- 11:04SPEAKER_03: You know, like just stay healthy.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I think you're gonna see an increase in running the ball.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: I think you're gonna give a lot more carries to Cam Dickey and Jacoby Williams and really try to get your offense flowing through that, um, more so than giving Barron the ball and uh you know, potentially risking an injury.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: I don't know if they even have that mindset, to be honest.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: They don't seem like they're like scared necessarily.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: Barron's not a scared guy.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: He's gonna go out there and play the game that he always has.
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: Unfortunately, you know, that's led to a lot of injuries, um, and you know, due to whatever it may be.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: So I I don't know.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: I think I think Barron, this is really a like a career-defining moment for Barron Morton right now, because if he can stay healthy and he takes this very capable team right now to continue to win, continue, maybe a spot in the Big 12 championship, maybe a spot even further, this is what people are gonna remember Baron Morton for.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: They're not gonna remember him for the injuries, they're gonna remember him for these this next stretch of games to where he could potentially bring Texas Tech to their first Big 12 championship or even beyond.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: So I think that should be focused first and foremost.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: You play the game that you don't, you know, like obviously use your running backs, not only one, because you're really good when you get Cam Dickey and Jacoby Williams going, and they're two dynamic players that can absolutely be weapons for you that you didn't utilize in your one loss this season.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: So yeah, use your running backs, but also you gotta let Barron Morton play his game, man.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: And he sat out these last two weeks.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: Apparently, he could have gone against Oklahoma State, but they kind of kept him at bay to give him another week of rest so he didn't have to go out there.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: Um, so you're hoping he's back to at least, you know, 85-90%, and we kind of ride that momentum going forward.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: He continues his rehab, maybe he practices a little less throughout the week to maintain, you know, that uh his health, but you just gotta let him sling it.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: You gotta let Barron Morton be Baron Morton.
- 13:06SPEAKER_03: That's absolutely true, dude.
- 13:08SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, I was talking about how you know we're gonna want to aim to be cautious, but at the same time, you know, you have the chance to go and win the Big 12 championship.
- 13:18SPEAKER_03: And in your senior year of college, I'm sure all that's going through Barron's mind is like, I could be the first quarterback to do this.
- 13:25SPEAKER_03: You know, like I can be, I can do what Graham Harrell and Patrick Mahomes never did, you know, and that would put him into election status, like that would put him up there with those two guys forever, and like even with a bit of more, perhaps even more um behind it, because we have a trophy to show for it, you know.
- 13:44SPEAKER_03: So it's I'm with you, dude.
- 13:46SPEAKER_03: Get him out there, sling it.
- 13:48SPEAKER_03: And like you said, dude, obviously you want to.
- 13:50SPEAKER_03: I I just I think where I'm going with this, I don't want to see him run.
- 13:54SPEAKER_03: I don't want to see any design quarterback runs.
- 13:57SPEAKER_03: That's for dang sure.
- 13:58SPEAKER_03: Um, just give it to your gosh darn running backs who are very capable, and whatever you give them some chance to eat, they consume.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: I want to give you some offensive line stats here because this is kind of to the point of running the ball.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: The offensive line is eighth in the country in pressure rate allowed right now.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: Great.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: That's a really great stat.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: And they're the 12th best offensive line grade in the power four right now.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: This offensive line is very capable.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: Yes, they've had the uh the false starts, yes, they've had holding, yes, the penalties have been an issue, but this is a really, really good offensive line and one of the best the tech has had in years.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: So use your running backs, use Cam Dickey, use Jacoby Williams.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: It pains me when Jacoby Williams does not have the ball in his hand.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: And I'm glad that they put him back on kick returns because obviously you saw what he can do against Oklahoma State returning the first, the opening kick.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: So Jacoby Williams needs the ball.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: I don't know how you do it, but Mac Lefwich, you gotta make it, you gotta make it happen, man.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: Because Cam Dickey can be your guy to get you, you know, the the tough three, four yards that you need to start off a good drive.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: But Jacoby Williams is your big playability guy that's gonna that puts you over the top of that position.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: So, yes, continue to utilize your running backs.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: They did a good job of that against Oklahoma State.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: You didn't really need it though.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: You start off, I mean, well, you start off with a kick return for a touchdown, and then you you get a pump block and then an automatic touchdown.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: Who'd you get that second touchdown to?
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: Jacoby Williams, who made it work.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: 30 yards just made it happen.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: So I I'm uh I'm really upset when I see Jacoby Williams three carries or you know, Cand Dickey nine carries.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: We need to get these guys in the double digits.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: We need the ball in their hands.
- 15:39SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, dude.
- 15:40SPEAKER_03: And and next next weekend it's gonna be key, or this weekend, I should say, against Kansas State.
- 15:45SPEAKER_03: Like you got to get that run game going.
- 15:47SPEAKER_03: That way you can free up the passing game.
- 15:49SPEAKER_03: I'd like to see a really nice balance attack against the Wildcats moving forward.
- 15:53SPEAKER_03: Um, because this this game scares the crud out of me.
- 15:57SPEAKER_03: This game feels like we're about to walk into a trickier Arizona State situation.
- 16:02SPEAKER_03: Because with Arizona State, you knew you're about to play a good team.
- 16:05SPEAKER_03: And the result the result does not shock you.
- 16:09SPEAKER_03: I feel like we have the opportunity to go to the little app hole and be shocked, you know.
- 16:13SPEAKER_03: So it's that's what scares me is uh is the opportunity to fall into our first true trap game.
- 16:21SPEAKER_03: Like I wasn't that afraid about going to Houston, um, but now it feels like we're we're about to approach a team that is getting their crap together after obliterating their in-state rival and is about to host a top 15 Texas Tech team in their uh in their house.
- 16:36SPEAKER_03: So I really hope that uh Left Witch approaches this with a much more balanced approach than he did with uh Arizona State.
- 16:42SPEAKER_03: Like I don't want to see the quarterbacks hanging on to it for a run or airing it out way more way too more than we need to.
- 16:49SPEAKER_03: I need to see those running backs eating.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: Look, we're gonna see if this team has grown from facing some adversity with a loss against Arizona State.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: I don't think this coaching step is going to allow these players to go in with a mindset of, oh, this is a four-and-four team, whatever.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: We'll take care of business and do what we need to do.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: These guys are gonna fight the rest of the year.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: And you could look at, we could be looking back at that Arizona State as a positive for us uh to see this team grow and continue that mindset of, hey, we can lose on any given week here.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: We gotta give all out effort, we gotta be who we can be every single week, no matter the opponent.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: So I'm not worried about that piece of it.
- 17:33SPEAKER_01: I don't think Joey and those guys are worried about that piece of it.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: They have seen that Kansas State is three and their three and one in their last four.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: So yeah, this is not your Ireland Kansas State.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: This is not that team anymore.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: They have figured something out and are three and one in their last four.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: They started off one and three, have since kind of turned the table and are and are becoming more of the Kansas State team that we expected them to be than they started off being at the beginning of the year.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: Um, this is the Matt Wells game.
- 18:04SPEAKER_03: This is the Matt Wells game, dude.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: This is the Matt Wells game.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: This is the first time we have played Matt Wells since he has gotten back into the scene after he was fired at Texas Tech.
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: Um, what are your thoughts on Matt Wells?
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: How do you feel about Matt Wells?
- 18:24SPEAKER_03: Um, you know what's really funny?
- 18:26SPEAKER_03: I saw I saw a Twitter post or an ex post, a Z about that being uh the Matt Wells game from the Kansas State perspective.
- 18:35SPEAKER_03: And it was really funny.
- 18:36SPEAKER_03: And it said that uh, like, oh, this is the Matt Wells revenge game, and all the Red Raiders and the replies are saying, like, you're the one that got him fired.
- 18:44SPEAKER_03: What do you mean, revenge game?
- 18:45SPEAKER_03: You know, it's so no, setting us back years, that was his revenge.
- 18:51SPEAKER_03: So um no, uh, dude, it's it's gonna be really funny.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: Um, it's gonna be an odd way thing to see your former head coach on the sideline.
- 19:00SPEAKER_03: I don't know if that's happened to us before, so it's gonna be really weird seeing him do that.
- 19:06SPEAKER_03: This but this is how I feel about it.
- 19:08SPEAKER_03: We know the kind of offensive line Matt Wells is, and we know it's pretty pedestrian, it's nothing special.
- 19:16SPEAKER_03: If anything, it's it's very head scratchy, to say the least.
- 19:20SPEAKER_03: Um and he's about to go against Shield Wood, who has not had a single bad game this entire year.
- 19:29SPEAKER_03: I don't think that this is going to be the game that he drops the ball.
- 19:34SPEAKER_03: I'm not saying like he has any bad beef against Matt Wells.
- 19:37SPEAKER_03: I just think Shield Wood's like, well, I got a job to do, and I'm gonna keep doing that job.
- 19:41SPEAKER_03: And Matt Wells is about to face a defense that he has not seen all dang year.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: So this is gonna be a slap in the face to Matt Wells.
- 19:49SPEAKER_03: Those uh repeated screens are not gonna work.
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: Look, the beginning of the season, Kansas State, their offense looked horrid, and we saw it from Kansas State fans, they were uh not on team Matt Wells.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: And I don't know if anybody's been on team Matt Wells, you know, in the last couple of years for him.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: But you look at their last four in this three-in-one stretch, they scored 34 points against UCF, decent defense, not good offense, so that's uh you know, beat them pretty handedly.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: They scored 35 points against Baylor, terrible defense.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: They scored 41 points against TCU and then 42 against Kansas.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: So they figured at least something out on the offensive side of the ball.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: And, you know, you got to give Matt Wells a little bit of credit for this last four-game stretch of putting together a good game plan and actually utilizing Avery Johnson in a positive way because at the beginning of the year it was he was not utilized properly.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: This this guy is a really, really talented player that can take off at any moment and also has improved his passing game this year, become a little bit more accurate as the season's gone on, and he's just explosive, man.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: We've but what I will say about Shield Wood and this team is we have reduced the amount of explosive plays tenfold for the last several years, and really don't allow a lot of dynamic plays to happen on you.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: You've done a really, really good job on these core these dual threat quarterbacks.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: Sam Levitt, you know, different kind of story, but he's just he's awesome.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: Sam Levitt is better than Avery Johnson 100%.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: Avery Johnson's been very up and down, but he does have that ability to absolutely take off as soon as he's rushed.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: Um, I did see a stat that Kansas State has only played two other teams with a pass rush in the top 75.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: Texas Tech is one of the best pass rushes in the entire nation.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: So this will be a wake up call for Kansas State.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: That offensive line has not been fantastic over there.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: So we'll see what it looks like going up against David Bailey, Ramelo Hyde, Lee Hunter, and AJ Holmes.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: So I I don't know.
- 21:59SPEAKER_01: I I we I think we'll see a lot.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: This game being in Manhattan scares me because and and just being against Kansas State scares me.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: We're one and twelve in the last 13 against this freaking school.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: And I we just don't beat Kansas State.
- 22:19SPEAKER_03: We do not beat Kansas State, and we do not win in Manhattan.
- 22:26SPEAKER_03: So we I we've never witnessed it as in the in our tenure events of us winning in Manhattan in the little apple.
- 22:33SPEAKER_03: Um but I mean you just listed off every single reason why we should win this game.
- 22:37SPEAKER_03: And it kind of the conversation begins and ends with the defense.
- 22:41SPEAKER_03: Like our our defense will be able to hold any sort of attack they try to throw at us.
- 22:46SPEAKER_03: I don't just I don't know if they have the capability through the air to make it tricky for us.
- 22:51SPEAKER_03: I still know if they have the weapons, and I don't know if Avery Johnson is that talented of a passer to make it work.
- 22:57SPEAKER_03: The thing about Sam Levin is he's the kind of guy that a defense can only do so much for because he's able to run out of pocket, hang on to it for like 10 seconds out there in no man's land, and then find a guy.
- 23:10SPEAKER_03: That's what kept happening for them to put to pull the wind over us.
- 23:14SPEAKER_03: So I don't think Aaron Johnson's got that ability in him.
- 23:17SPEAKER_03: I just don't think that's his that's his that's his kind of play.
- 23:20SPEAKER_03: I just think if things get tricky, he's gonna try to just run it down the field.
- 23:23SPEAKER_03: And the good news is we have one of the best run defenses in the entire country.
- 23:29SPEAKER_03: So we just got a whole bunch of big old boys ready to eat up anything you're trying to throw into the front line.
- 23:35SPEAKER_03: So if they're gonna try to make anything happen against us, you're gonna have to try to get things, make things make it tricky in the air.
- 23:40SPEAKER_03: And I just don't think K-State's got that ability to do so.
- 23:44SPEAKER_03: Um, I know I know our offense is gonna do their job, but I really think that it's gonna be uh the story is gonna be defense this this coming upcoming week, as it's been many weeks.
- 23:52SPEAKER_03: But I really think that uh in Manhattan, you know, defense travels, it's gonna it's gonna be the story of them.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, offense for Texas Tech is gonna be interesting to watch because this Kansas State defense, their run defense is pretty solid.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: They have a decent linebacking core.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: They don't get a lot of pressure from their linemen, but they have a solid linebacking core, and they have been able to stop the run a decent amount um this season.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: But uh, you know, we're I'm I'm interested to see if we get Terrence Carter back because that's obviously a weapon that Baron Morton has utilized this entire year.
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: He was out last week, he was out, uh he got hurt in the Arizona State game, and John Carlos Miller just isn't the same type of pass catching threat that Terrence Carter is.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: So really interested to see if he comes back because that is a weapon that Baron Morton likes to use.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: And honestly, the receiving core the last couple weeks has just not been up to par.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: I mean, Coy, we have not seen him being as sure-handed as he is.
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: Caleb Douglas drops passes.
- 24:51SPEAKER_01: Uh, he had a wide open touchdown against Oklahoma State that he just dropped.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: He just dropped nothing, and he's been doing that all year.
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: So I don't know if you can really rely on him.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: I like getting the ball to Reggie Virgil.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: I like what he can do after the catch, but we're just not getting the ball there.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: So I don't know, man.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: Uh, we'll see.
- 25:11SPEAKER_01: I'd love to see Terrence Carter back to really give me a lot of confidence in this team moving down the field.
- 25:18SPEAKER_01: But look, Texas Tech over the last several years has not been good at football.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: And we haven't beat Kansas State.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: But this is a new year.
- 25:28SPEAKER_01: We're seven and one.
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: This would be the year to finally beat the freaking Kansas State Wildcats.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: And to your point earlier, it's gonna start and it's gonna end with the defense.
- 25:39SPEAKER_03: It's you know, this is not your younger self's Texas Tech.
- 25:43SPEAKER_03: Okay, yeah.
- 25:44SPEAKER_03: This is this is a completely different team that we've ever seen.
- 25:48SPEAKER_03: This is the best Texas Tech defense the school's ever had.
- 25:52SPEAKER_03: Okay, like that's that that shows what kind of year it is.
- 25:55SPEAKER_03: You know what I mean?
- 25:56SPEAKER_03: So, um, and I like that you brought up the receivers.
- 25:59SPEAKER_03: That's probably been the most frustrating thing on offense lately, is how many touchdowns have we left off the board from simply running before you catch the ball?
- 26:07SPEAKER_03: You know, I it's it's it's been crazy to watch these balls just trip and slip right through their hands.
- 26:12SPEAKER_03: I wonder what's going on there.
- 26:13SPEAKER_03: I really hope that's a a focus of emphasis in practice, as you know, keeping keeping your mind one step at a time, catch the ball first before you do anything else.
- 26:23SPEAKER_03: Um and I wanted to speaking of defense and slowing Kansas State down, you never like to see this for in any competition, but Kansas State will be without their star running back, uh Dylan Edwards, in this game.
- 26:39SPEAKER_03: So that does take some of the heat off the the the line, uh, the both the defensive line and linebackers.
- 26:45SPEAKER_03: So, like I said, it's this should really be a game where the defense can just open K-State wide open and get to get to the quarterback over and over again.
- 26:57SPEAKER_03: So I I really just think our defense is going to be the difference maker here.
- 27:01SPEAKER_03: And I feel like now we're just kind of repeating ourselves, but it's it's just the truth.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they're running Joe Jackson as their starting running back, Avery Johnson obviously getting a uh a good amount of carries with him having that dual thread ability.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: The receiver to watch out for is Jace Brown.
- 27:17SPEAKER_01: He's fantastic, he's a really good athlete.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: Um, just a big playability guy, had a 78-yard touchdown against Kansas and uh four receptions for 160 yards.
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: He was averaging 40 yards a catch against the Kansas Jayhawks.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: Uh, and he's been their go-to guy all year.
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: Um, we should also mention Jaron Bradley, the revenge tour, uh, also.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: He's also on Kansas State's receiving core.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: Uh, just a name that um Texas Tech fans may know from the past couple years.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: But um, yeah, man, we you're looking at this offense and it's gonna it's gonna live and die by Avery Johnson.
- 27:53SPEAKER_01: And I just have a lot of faith in guys like Jacob Rodriguez and Romelo Hyde and David Bailey to really shut him down for the most part.
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: Um but you know, this being an away game and this being against a Kansas State team that we just can't seem to beat as a university the last several years, it's always gonna be creeping up as a as a scary one.
- 28:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but dude, I I really I'm starting uh I was kind of nervous going to this podcast, but as we began speaking, I'm starting to really start feeling myself build that confidence that we are gonna win this game.
- 28:23SPEAKER_03: Yep, we are going to win in Manhattan, and it may even be convincing.
- 28:29SPEAKER_03: So the Vegas says we're favored by three, but I don't know.
- 28:34SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 28:34SPEAKER_03: I I I'm feeling I'm feeling more.
- 28:37SPEAKER_03: I'm feeling I'm feeling a couple possessions.
- 28:40SPEAKER_03: What about you?
- 28:40SPEAKER_03: How do you feel about it?
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: I'm hoping so.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: Uh last I saw though, actually, it was up to seven.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: Ah, so it shots.
- 28:49SPEAKER_01: Tech favored by seven.
- 28:51SPEAKER_01: Um, going into this one.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: We'll we'll see.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: I really there's so many different factors.
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: We need to see how healthy Baron Morton actually is.
- 28:58SPEAKER_01: Is he ready to go or is he gonna be out there limping?
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: Like I I feel like he's in a good spot, but we we don't really know until we see it.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: And uh there's always the risk for the re-injury there, and we yeah, you know, seeing Mitch Griffiths on the field.
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: So um we shall see.
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: It's a 230 kickoff on Fox in Manhattan, Kansas.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: So yeah.
- 29:20SPEAKER_03: And if you win this game, there's a really good chance that College Gandhi is at Lumbo next weekend.
- 29:26SPEAKER_03: Because you're potentially looking at a top 10 Big 12 matchup next weekend, which would be good.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: That's a great transition into talking about the Big 12 race as a whole right now.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: Texas Tech tied for second in the Big 12.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: Unfortunately, there's two teams that are tied for first right now in BYU and Cincinnati, still sitting pretty at a 5-0 record.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: BYU undefeated overall.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: Cincinnati obviously dropped that one game to start the year against Nebraska, but they've been on an absolute tear.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: This is kind of what it looks like from a uh here's a little picture into everybody's schedule.
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: So Texas Tech still has to play BYU.
- 30:08SPEAKER_01: They're still at Kansas State, so those are your two toughies left.
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: And then you finish off UCF in West Virginia, two games that you should win.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: You know, all things considering, you should win.
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: Uh the Kansas State one, obviously, going to be tough, and then BYU is going to be a real toughie, but you have that one in Lubbock, Texas.
- 30:25SPEAKER_01: Cincinnati at Utah this week.
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: Tough one for them.
- 30:30SPEAKER_01: Utah back in the rankings at 24.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: They go two, or I'm sorry, they host Arizona, and then they host BYU.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: So BYU and Cincinnati, one of those teams is going to lose this show.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: It's gonna happen.
- 30:45SPEAKER_01: One of those teams is gonna lose.
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: And if you beat BYU, you obviously have the tiebreaker over them just as much as you also have the tiebreaker over Houston right now, who's also creeping into this Big 12 race.
- 30:56SPEAKER_01: Um, and then Cincinnati finishes off the year in Fort Worth against TCU.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: BYU goes, they have a bye week this week, so they're getting pretty fresh going into Lubbock um the following week.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: So they're obviously at Texas Tech.
- 31:12SPEAKER_01: They host TCU, they are at Cincinnati, and then they host UCF to finish off the year.
- 31:19SPEAKER_01: So definitely some losable games from both Cincinnati and BYU here.
- 31:23SPEAKER_01: Um, TCU actually has a major uh play in this Big 12 race right now with them playing both BYU and in Cincinnati.
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: Hey, come on, frogs, help us out.
- 31:34SPEAKER_03: No frogs, I guess.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: Help us out a little bit, maybe give them an L and give tech, you know, an auto uh auto bid here.
- 31:40SPEAKER_01: But ultimately, none of this really matters.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: Texas Tech has to take care of business, so yeah, control what you're doing.
- 31:48SPEAKER_03: If you win out, you're in the Big 12 championship.
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: So well, there's still some tiebreakers there, but uh you know No, I guess you're right.
- 31:56SPEAKER_01: I guess you're right.
- 31:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, we'd be in the Big 12 championship because we knock out BYU for the spot.
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's true, because we already have the tiebreaker over Houston.
- 32:03SPEAKER_01: And if it's say every team, you know, every team can't win out, but say, you know, tech wins out, BYU will have that loss, you'll own the tiebreaker over them.
- 32:13SPEAKER_01: We'll see what happens with the weird Cincinnati BYU situation.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: I don't know, say BYU beats Cincy, but then you would be, yeah, tech would have the auto bit.
- 32:23SPEAKER_01: If tech wins out, you're good.
- 32:24SPEAKER_01: You're good.
- 32:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you're in there.
- 32:25SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so just focus on yourself.
- 32:28SPEAKER_01: This is a tough one in Manhattan.
- 32:29SPEAKER_01: You have another tough one against BYU.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: You get past those two.
- 32:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's it's pretty good.
- 32:35SPEAKER_01: So that's what that's kind of an overall look into the Big 12 title race right now.
- 32:39SPEAKER_03: Take care of business, dude.
- 32:41SPEAKER_03: And remember, if we looked at the season right now, and we said your loss was to the defending champions of the Big 12 and Timpe, you're like, okay, that's doable.
- 32:50SPEAKER_03: Like that you can you can understand that.
- 32:52SPEAKER_03: So uh it's it is funny to see Houston tied with us for second.
- 32:57SPEAKER_03: Like that's that is that's funny to say, see, because nobody expected that out of Houston this year.
- 33:01SPEAKER_03: They thought they're gonna be pretty middle of the pack.
- 33:03SPEAKER_03: But dude, it's they they've got a they got a program builder there uh at head coach.
- 33:08SPEAKER_03: So um they they're they're gonna they're gonna be they're gonna be they're gonna be tough moving forward.
- 33:12SPEAKER_03: So um, but other than that, man, I think the only other shockers, like true shockers you see in the Big 12 right now, Iowa State has issues.
- 33:21SPEAKER_03: They were a promising people are like bookmarking them for undefeated in the Big 12 championship with a bid in the top four in the college football playoff.
- 33:31SPEAKER_03: And they are plummeting, dude.
- 33:33SPEAKER_03: They uh they just got they got crashed by Colorado a couple weeks ago, and I believe they knew they just dropped the game to BYU.
- 33:40SPEAKER_03: BYU.
- 33:41SPEAKER_03: So at home, and it wasn't close to the end.
- 33:43SPEAKER_03: So it's I don't know what's going on over there in Ames, but that's definitely a disappointing, disappointing season they're having.
- 33:50SPEAKER_03: Other than that, I think more or less, or you could argue Baylor's having a tough season, and Kansas State, of course, but more or less things are kind of on on track here.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, uh definitely Iowa State been absolutely bludgeoned by injuries.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: They've just they have not been able to recover.
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: Their defense uh already was a little shaky, and then they just had injury after injury after injury.
- 34:14SPEAKER_01: So that's been Iowa State's deal.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: Baylor's defense is just awful.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: Uh Dave Viranda, it's looking like the last few last few games for for old Dave in uh in Waco, Texas.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: You know, Kansas is frisky, good offense sometimes.
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: You know, their defense just hasn't been able to stop anybody.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: Um, Kansas State up and down, they're they're on the come up, though, but they just started off so poor.
- 34:37SPEAKER_01: Houston doing us a favor against Arizona State, and it looks like it was very nice with the Cardiac Cougars over there, who I do want to point out Houston by far has the easiest schedule in the Big 12.
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: Looking back at it.
- 34:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, they played every bottom tier team in the Big 12.
- 34:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they their only two tough games has been at Arizona State and then Texas Tech.
- 34:59SPEAKER_01: And tech they obviously lost by 24, and then Arizona State.
- 35:03SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, they managed to do us a favor there.
- 35:04SPEAKER_01: So that was a big win for Houston.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: Nothing to take away from the Kooks.
- 35:08SPEAKER_01: They're having a great season, they're definitely having a much better season than what they expected, but that schedule's cake, man.
- 35:13SPEAKER_01: So, you know, uh, we'll see.
- 35:15SPEAKER_01: We'll see what happens the rest of the year.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: It's an exciting, it's always an exciting year in the Big 12, and we shall see.
- 35:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, dude, absolutely.
- 35:24SPEAKER_03: So you brought up Dave Aranda about to be cooked, and dude, it is just a wood chipper for head coaches out there right now.
- 35:32SPEAKER_03: And so that would make two in the Big 12, two open seats of the Big 12.
- 35:37SPEAKER_03: Um, and you gotta scratch your head.
- 35:40SPEAKER_03: And with all the other head coaching vacancies, this is gonna be the craziest offseason I've ever seen when it comes to uh head coaching vacancies.
- 35:48SPEAKER_03: I just I don't think I've I've ever seen anything like it.
- 35:51SPEAKER_03: Um, and you'll wonder where those Big 12 teams will come into play.
- 35:54SPEAKER_03: I think if they're smart, they're not even gonna try to compete with any of those other like LLC Floridas penn states.
- 36:01SPEAKER_03: Oh, they're gonna be able to do that.
- 36:01SPEAKER_03: They're just gonna go and try.
- 36:03SPEAKER_03: Right, right.
- 36:03SPEAKER_03: But like don't I'm saying, like, don't even put your chips in that basket.
- 36:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like I say, like I think it's clear you take a risk on like an Eric Morris at UNT, or you you go and get uh a proven builder like trailer, even if they're not in a great year, or Kenny as well in that same zone.
- 36:20SPEAKER_03: So I think yeah, the options are absolutely there.
- 36:22SPEAKER_03: I think it I think they easily get Texas State's head coach for Baylor.
- 36:26SPEAKER_03: I think that's a good foot in.
- 36:28SPEAKER_03: But um, other than I mean, I just think those choices are the clear ones.
- 36:31SPEAKER_03: You gotta be a little more shifty than going for swinging for bigger names with them.
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'll be curious to see.
- 36:38SPEAKER_01: I think you you have to look at the UNT Texas State UTSA kind of coaching triangle right there for the Baylor job and for the Oklahoma State job, honestly, maybe even the Arkansas job.
- 36:47SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: Um, so and then you know, we'll we're still seeing what Rhett Lashley's gonna do at SMU.
- 36:53SPEAKER_01: If he ends up going back to the home state and do taking the Arkansas gig, then SMU opens up.
- 36:58SPEAKER_01: But yeah, it's it's a ripple effect, man.
- 37:00SPEAKER_01: And with jobs like LSU in Florida and Penn State being open right now, it's just not the time to it's not the time to be firing your coach.
- 37:08SPEAKER_01: And unfortunately, uh, you know, Baylor's gonna be put between a rock and a hard place here, and and you know, they're they have to they have to move off of Dave Aranda.
- 37:17SPEAKER_03: They have to, because you don't you don't want them to further damage the program and you don't want him to be able to save his job either, you know, like because I know I know it sounds dumb, like what if you don't want to save his job, that means that a good year, right?
- 37:28SPEAKER_03: But then you're just gonna be right back to square one in a few years, you know.
- 37:31SPEAKER_03: You need a fresh blood, you need the fans to believe again, um, and you need the recruits to get uh a new juice.
- 37:38SPEAKER_03: So what what let's just stay on this point for a quick second before we move on.
- 37:42SPEAKER_03: Um the good news is I don't think I have not seen a single report of any notes that anybody has their eyes on Joey Maguire.
- 37:53SPEAKER_03: Um and I this obviously may sound naive or fanatical, but I don't see Joey Maguire leaving Texas Tech for any job.
- 38:06SPEAKER_03: Any job.
- 38:07SPEAKER_03: I think we'd have to really sit there and parse out certain teams to maybe think if there's even a me.
- 38:15SPEAKER_03: Because the way he talks about Texas Tech and the way he's gotten boosters to get behind him, I just think he's got his ideal situation, and I think the pressure on him is just right at Texas Tech as well.
- 38:28SPEAKER_03: So I I just I can't see, especially any of these jobs that it have opened, I don't see any of these jobs being both uh A appealing to Joey Maguire or B them wanting to go to them, like wanting wanting a Joey McGuire.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think you said it all.
- 38:45SPEAKER_01: I mean, the the NIL aspect of this and looking at the resources that Texas Tech has has almost been a detriment to how people look at Joey Maguire.
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: Um, saying, oh yeah, anybody could win with this type of roster or this type of team, you know.
- 39:01SPEAKER_01: So there's that's a good thing going for Texas Tech to continue to keep Joey Maguire, but also Joey Maguire's not leaving.
- 39:09SPEAKER_01: He said it.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: And and it's very easy to think in today's age, you know, coach talk, whatever.
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: Yes, he's absolutely looking at different options, he's leveraging stuff to get a bigger paycheck.
- 39:22SPEAKER_01: If you've been listening to anything that Joey Maguire has said the last several years that he's been here, he has no intentions to leave this job.
- 39:30SPEAKER_01: He knows he has it good here.
- 39:32SPEAKER_01: He knows that the resources are absolutely there to succeed right now at Texas Tech.
- 39:37SPEAKER_01: And I he loves this state.
- 39:39SPEAKER_01: He's a Texas guy.
- 39:40SPEAKER_01: He's always this has been his dream job, and he's said that many years.
- 39:45SPEAKER_01: And I know we've been fooled by that in the past with a Chris Beard, but it's just, I think I I just trust in Joey to not want any part of any other job.
- 39:56SPEAKER_03: I think, you know, again, another detriment is a lot of people rip on him for getting his starting and coaching from the high school level, and I think they could that'll be uh, you know, a cutoff for him, but I do think that is a bonus for us in this situation.
- 40:10SPEAKER_03: I think there is an extra level of loyalty baked into a high school coach that wouldn't be found in a common college coach, just just due to the industries that they are.
- 40:22SPEAKER_03: You know, I I I think he truly knows that whenever you got a good, you plant roots.
- 40:27SPEAKER_03: And that's a I think that's a very uh high school Friday Night Likes mentality, is you plant roots and you you be you you live in that you live and love that community.
- 40:38SPEAKER_03: So I really think that's that's a benefit to us.
- 40:41SPEAKER_03: And we know there's coach speech out there, but I don't know how many coaches have gotten up to the microphone and said, I'm going to die at this job.
- 40:49SPEAKER_03: Like that's that's that's insane coaching talk if that's if that's all hot air.
- 40:54SPEAKER_03: So I I again I I just I say this as a celebrity to give Joey's flowers and celebrate him.
- 40:59SPEAKER_03: You know, we're I think we're all very happy to have him out as our head coach.
- 41:03SPEAKER_03: And I think he understands how much we love him and how how good he has it.
- 41:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, Joey's not a dumb guy, he's just he's just not your typical college coach.
- 41:14SPEAKER_01: He doesn't have that mentality.
- 41:15SPEAKER_01: He knows how to play the recruiting game and he knows the game that is college, you know, coaching and at all the different things that you have to leverage with your AD and your donors and all that good stuff.
- 41:28SPEAKER_01: He knows that game, he's not a dumb person, but I do think that his loyalty really does trump everything else going on in the surrounding sphere of college sports.
- 41:40SPEAKER_01: So I'm uh yeah, I'm really happy that he's here.
- 41:43SPEAKER_01: I really want him to succeed here.
- 41:45SPEAKER_01: Every like he's such an easy guy to root for.
- 41:47SPEAKER_01: And so he's he's been doing a darn good job with this team this year.
- 41:51SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm really happy with it, and I'm happy that uh we're in the position that we currently are in, and uh we still have a lot of ability to do so much more.
- 42:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, dude, I really hope that the only coaching replacement conversations we have to have at Texas Tech all right is who do we have to replace at OC and DC when they're inevitably hired for head coaching jobs and such.
- 42:11SPEAKER_03: You know what I mean?
- 42:12SPEAKER_03: So that's that's uh that's a sign of a prosperous program.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: Yep, for sure.
- 42:17SPEAKER_01: Um, let's table this because we're getting we're getting pretty hefty here on time.
- 42:22SPEAKER_01: Let's talk about basketball because it starts up this week and we haven't spoken a lot on this team.
- 42:27SPEAKER_01: And to be honest, I haven't done as much research as I usually do this coming year.
- 42:31SPEAKER_01: One, due to the success of this Texas Tech football team, usually at this point in the year, we're kind of falling off.
- 42:37SPEAKER_01: We're kind of all in on basketball at this point, usually.
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're usually pretty all in and ready to go because of the success uh of the individual programs.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: But um, and also my Spurs are absolutely kicking butt right now, so it's been taking a lot of my time lately.
- 42:51SPEAKER_03: Let's keep bringing up the major league team.
- 42:53SPEAKER_01: I could please.
- 42:54SPEAKER_01: I'll talk about the Spurs.
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: We can make this a Spurs podcast if you want.
- 42:57SPEAKER_01: The listeners would hate it, but and the audience once, but we're here, we're here to talk with Minyama.
- 43:03SPEAKER_01: No, we're not.
- 43:04SPEAKER_01: Um this team starts off their season November 4th, which is next Tuesday, at United Supermarkets Arena against the mighty Lindenwood Lions.
- 43:17SPEAKER_03: Where's Lindenwood?
- 43:20SPEAKER_01: I we talked about it.
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: We talked about it.
- 43:22SPEAKER_01: I already forgot.
- 43:23SPEAKER_01: I think it's I my I'm I think your natural reaction when you don't know where a college is is to say Ohio.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: It's not, it's I don't think it's in Ohio.
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: I think it's in my final guess is gonna be Virginia.
- 43:37SPEAKER_01: Virginia.
- 43:39SPEAKER_03: Virginia is your final call, huh?
- 43:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's not gonna be Virginia, it's gonna be like Mississippi.
- 43:45SPEAKER_03: It's Missouri, Missouri! Look at that.
- 43:50SPEAKER_01: We know that Lindenwood is the most powerful program in the state of Missouri, and no, it's just it's another cupcake.
- 43:57SPEAKER_01: I mean, this we will say this non conference.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: Schedule for this team is much different from the years past.
- 44:02SPEAKER_01: We're playing some big dogs, and we're going to see what this team is made of early on.
- 44:06SPEAKER_01: You play at Illinois.
- 44:08SPEAKER_01: You play, you're going to play Wake Forest and one of Purdue or Memphis.
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: And Purdue's going to be a top two, if not number one team.
- 44:17SPEAKER_01: I don't know what they are actually in the AP preseason.
- 44:21SPEAKER_01: Houston's one, aren't they?
- 44:23SPEAKER_01: No, I think Houston was two.
- 44:25SPEAKER_01: Let me see here.
- 44:27SPEAKER_01: We're doing so.
- 44:27SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, Purdue.
- 44:28SPEAKER_01: Your preseason ranked number one team in the country right now.
- 44:32SPEAKER_01: The Purdue Boilermakers, and you have an opportunity to play them early on in the season.
- 44:37SPEAKER_01: You play Duke.
- 44:39SPEAKER_01: You play Arkansas, which is a rematch of the Sweet 16 game.
- 44:44SPEAKER_01: We're playing in Dallas for that one at the American Airlines Center.
- 44:46SPEAKER_01: You play Duke at MSG.
- 44:48SPEAKER_01: You're playing LSU, who not a great program right now in basketball, but still a known uh brand in college sports.
- 44:56SPEAKER_01: So you play them at Dicky's Arena.
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: So you're gonna get tested before conference play starts, and it's gonna be a lot of fun to watch these games, a lot of fun to go to these games.
- 45:04SPEAKER_01: But this is a really exciting team.
- 45:06SPEAKER_01: It's a top 10 preseason ranked team.
- 45:08SPEAKER_03: I was about to say, Steven, you didn't even mention what number are we, brother?
- 45:13SPEAKER_01: Number 10, which I think some people were a little going like directly after the season ended, and we kind of found out JT Toppin was coming back, Christian Anderson was coming back.
- 45:22SPEAKER_01: Some people were putting us in like the top three range, and the hype has kind of fallen off a little bit as the season's gone on.
- 45:28SPEAKER_01: Uh, whether that be due to you know Texas Tech just not being a known name like some of these other schools yet, I don't know.
- 45:35SPEAKER_01: But regardless, you're a top 10 ranked team in the country, you have a returning all-American coming back in JT Toppin, who absolutely would have been a first-round pick in this past year's NBA draft that you convince to come back.
- 45:49SPEAKER_01: He is the preseason Big 12 team player of the year.
- 45:53SPEAKER_01: He's uh, I think a contender for the national player of the year.
- 45:57SPEAKER_01: I think he might be he might be the front runner for national player of the year, right there with Braden Smith of uh Bananas, dude.
- 46:03SPEAKER_01: And a and a few other teams.
- 46:05SPEAKER_01: So obviously JT Toppin is the first guy you talk about with this team.
- 46:10SPEAKER_03: Are we are we talking about possibly the best player to ever play for Texas Tech basketball?
- 46:16SPEAKER_01: You're thinking about it.
- 46:19SPEAKER_01: You're thinking about it.
- 46:20SPEAKER_01: I mean, you don't get many Big 12 player of the years, you get a Jarek Culver every once in a while, you know, but this is this is a guy who has all of the talent to be a continue to be a first-round pick in the NBA.
- 46:32SPEAKER_01: If if his stock rises high enough, you could see him go top 10 in this year's NBA draft.
- 46:37SPEAKER_01: And I think that's his goal going into this year.
- 46:39SPEAKER_01: I mean, it also helps that he's getting paid close to four million dollars to return back to Texas Tech, which is more than a middling first-round pick in the NBA.
- 46:49SPEAKER_01: That's nuts, dude.
- 46:51SPEAKER_01: That's nuts.
- 46:53SPEAKER_01: He's getting paid more to come back to school than to be drafted, I think, top 15.
- 47:01SPEAKER_03: It it's it is a that's a flat out win-win, too, dude.
- 47:05SPEAKER_03: You get to further develop at school, get the degree, and you get paid millions of dollars to do it.
- 47:13SPEAKER_03: Um, and you you're if obviously, unless the worst thing happens, you're gonna go get the same draft stock you had before, likely.
- 47:21SPEAKER_03: So, if not better.
- 47:23SPEAKER_03: So it's like that's nuts.
- 47:25SPEAKER_01: It's pretty sweet to be a really good college basketball player today.
- 47:29SPEAKER_01: Uh go get go get paid.
- 47:31SPEAKER_01: Shout out to the donors and uh and the coaching staff to convince him to come back.
- 47:35SPEAKER_01: He's gonna be awesome to watch this year.
- 47:37SPEAKER_01: Another guy that's gonna be awesome to watch this year and is also returning, is Christian Anderson.
- 47:43SPEAKER_01: This is a guy who is absolutely going to take a major, major leap this year.
- 47:50SPEAKER_01: I'm I can see him being an all Big 12 type player, potentially even an all-American type player.
- 47:57SPEAKER_01: He has grown tremendously over the offseason, not just in height.
- 48:02SPEAKER_01: He's now stand, he's now standing at about six foot three.
- 48:05SPEAKER_01: He's gotten stronger, he's gotten bigger.
- 48:07SPEAKER_01: If you watched him over the summer, he played for the German national team against some insane competition in the uh, I believe it was Eurobasket League this past summer, where he actually matched up against Luka Doncic when he was playing against Slovenia.
- 48:21SPEAKER_01: Like he's he's playing against good teams, and he didn't play a lot for that team.
- 48:25SPEAKER_01: He did play for the under 19, whatever German team before this.
- 48:29SPEAKER_01: So he's gotten some major, major improvement going on for Christian Anderson.
- 48:34SPEAKER_01: He's gonna be your point guard, he's gonna be your main ball handler.
- 48:37SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be really, really fun to watch him.
- 48:39SPEAKER_03: That's awesome, dude.
- 48:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and yeah, talk about uh if he had an award for most improved on the team.
- 48:44SPEAKER_03: That's obviously it's it's gotta go to him.
- 48:46SPEAKER_03: Like he's just gonna take this.
- 48:47SPEAKER_03: He's already great at his young age this past year, but that dude's gonna take a huge leap, like you said, dude.
- 48:52SPEAKER_03: He's just gonna be electric to watch.
- 48:53SPEAKER_03: He's a fan favorite.
- 48:54SPEAKER_03: I'm excited to see him too.
- 48:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 48:58SPEAKER_01: Beyond those two guys, your returners are not not plentiful.
- 49:03SPEAKER_01: Uh, you I don't want to I don't want to discredit the Jazz Henderson's and the Leon Horners and the Jackie franchises of the world.
- 49:09SPEAKER_01: We do have those guys coming back.
- 49:11SPEAKER_01: I don't think they're gonna be major pieces on this year's team, but you know, very much uh very much guys that you like to have for backup purposes and you know just overall team chemistry.
- 49:22SPEAKER_01: We love to see those guys.
- 49:23SPEAKER_01: They've been in the program, they they're gonna teach guys how to practice well, and uh we love seeing those guys.
- 49:28SPEAKER_03: Steven Weber looking at this team photo, and look, I'm not looking that hard, okay?
- 49:33SPEAKER_03: I am married to a woman, so bear with me.
- 49:36SPEAKER_03: Do these guys seem more jacked than normal?
- 49:40SPEAKER_03: Like, just generally speaking, like I feel like this team looks yote.
- 49:46SPEAKER_01: This this strength and conditioning staff, they know what they're doing.
- 49:49SPEAKER_01: Andrew Wright is the strength and conditioning coach.
- 49:51SPEAKER_01: Mike Neal is the uh, you know, the med get medicine guy, and uh, you know, making sure these guys are healed up and ready to go whenever injuries happen.
- 49:59SPEAKER_01: But we just have a really good staff uh over here that knows how to develop guys, both in their bodies and getting them ready to play in the in a tough Big 12 conference, and also um just staying healthy on that side of it.
- 50:11SPEAKER_01: So really, really happy with this strength staff and what they've done for this team.
- 50:15SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I mean, this is this is going to be another team full of transfers, just like last year, just like the year prior, just like every year, because this is college basketball now.
- 50:26SPEAKER_01: We're lucky to have our two top guys returning.
- 50:28SPEAKER_01: Where this is a rarity now, where you're returning your top two players from last season.
- 50:34SPEAKER_01: Well, I shouldn't say top two.
- 50:35SPEAKER_01: Darien Williams did end up transferring out, but Christian Anderson will hopefully fill that role.
- 50:40SPEAKER_01: Some of the transfers that we got in are some dogs.
- 50:44SPEAKER_01: The Big 12 preseason newcomer of the year, LeWan Watts, is coming in.
- 50:49SPEAKER_01: He's getting a lot of hype.
- 50:50SPEAKER_01: Uh, with the red, he's a redshirt junior coming from Washington State, kind of a do-it-all forward.
- 50:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, he can guard all five positions.
- 50:57SPEAKER_01: I think his defense is really highly touted, can also do some really interesting things on the offensive side of the floor.
- 51:02SPEAKER_01: He's gonna be your Darien Williams replacement.
- 51:05SPEAKER_01: So um, I haven't done a ton of uh research on this guy yet, but by all accounts, everybody that knows ball from uh the Ryan Mainvilles to even some national guys really, really are hyping up Lawan Watts to be a dude this year.
- 51:21SPEAKER_03: I mean, I like you said, dude, like it's all the main point of this game now is to identify the talent in the portal.
- 51:27SPEAKER_03: And if we can do the same thing that we were able to do in football, I mean, it's kind of funny taking a notepage from football with you know how much better basketball's been.
- 51:34SPEAKER_03: But if we we seem to be doing really great with the management positions like uh to be able to identify this talent.
- 51:40SPEAKER_03: So I trust it.
- 51:41SPEAKER_03: I trust it.
- 51:42SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 51:42SPEAKER_01: And we'll see how the rest of these guys play out.
- 51:44SPEAKER_01: But some other key transfers that we got in Donovan Adwell uh coming in from UNC Greensboro, heck of a shooter, really good guard.
- 51:52SPEAKER_01: He's probably gonna start for you.
- 51:53SPEAKER_01: Um, Luke Bamboye, I believe is how you say his name, coming over from BCU.
- 51:58SPEAKER_01: Some people are hyping up to be the best defender in college basketball next year.
- 52:02SPEAKER_01: And placing placing him alongside JT Top and his blocking ability, his block rate is freaking insane.
- 52:09SPEAKER_01: Like the rim protection from this guy, when you look at the like nitty-gritty and the the advanced stats, he was one of the best defenders in all of college basketball last year.
- 52:18SPEAKER_01: And you're hoping he takes a leap into playing a starting role.
- 52:22SPEAKER_01: He's only a sophomore, but he's six foot eleven and just blocks the crap out of everything around the rim.
- 52:27SPEAKER_01: So really excited to see him on the defensive side.
- 52:29SPEAKER_01: Offense, definitely a work in progress.
- 52:32SPEAKER_01: He's gonna be a little similar to uh a Fetty situation, but with better defense, so uh, and potentially much, much better defense.
- 52:40SPEAKER_01: So he's a guy to watch out for.
- 52:42SPEAKER_01: I think Tyree Bryan's gonna be a dude for you.
- 52:44SPEAKER_01: He's a senior coming in, the transfer from Santa Clara, really good shooter.
- 52:49SPEAKER_01: I believe he shot 42% from three last year.
- 52:51SPEAKER_01: Uh bigger guy, too.
- 52:53SPEAKER_01: Um so really good on the defensive side of the floor.
- 52:56SPEAKER_01: Um, Josiah Mosley could be an interesting player, transferred from Villanova.
- 53:01SPEAKER_01: He's coming in as only a sophomore, not really used right, I think, at Villanova this past year, and a super disappointing year for Villanova.
- 53:09SPEAKER_01: Fired their coach, just not a really good situation overall, but he's sitting at 6'8, very Kelvin Johnson-like.
- 53:17SPEAKER_01: If you're into NBA basketball and you watch the Spurs, um, rebounder can do a lot underneath the rim.
- 53:23SPEAKER_01: Not really an outside player yet, but uh pretty versatile defender as well.
- 53:27SPEAKER_01: And then uh you got a couple freshmen and uh and newer guys that uh you know will play minimally, but really, really excited to see this team.
- 53:35SPEAKER_01: I think they have a chance to be really, really good this year um and definitely should be a contender.
- 53:40SPEAKER_01: And you still got Grant McCastline as your freaking coach, man.
- 53:43SPEAKER_01: I I yeah, I just he's going to get these guys ready to play.
- 53:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, dude.
- 53:48SPEAKER_03: I mean, we barely even touched on the coaching staff, dude.
- 53:51SPEAKER_03: And like you said, man, I I just we have no reason to doubt Grant McCastlane.
- 53:55SPEAKER_03: Well, you and I will be able to talk more about the basketball team as the season progresses here.
- 53:58SPEAKER_03: We start seeing the players who we're excited about, what we like seeing.
- 54:01SPEAKER_03: Um, but dude, this this guy's the man, and I I don't I don't want to get too far in my skis, but I mean it was just it's amazing to have this program and this coach to say like they actually have the potential to win a national championship.
- 54:15SPEAKER_03: And this is a team that literally has that now.
- 54:18SPEAKER_03: So we we we could be looking forward to uh seeing our guys in Indianapolis this year, is it?
- 54:24SPEAKER_01: I think that's right.
- 54:25SPEAKER_03: So I'm not sure.
- 54:26SPEAKER_03: I think back to the Midwest to the final four.
- 54:29SPEAKER_03: So I want to see it, dude.
- 54:30SPEAKER_03: I'll buy my tickets, but until then, man, all things look good.
- 54:34SPEAKER_01: Lyndon Wood is the first sucker on the schedule.
- 54:37SPEAKER_01: So again, you're starting off with Lyndon Wood and Sam Houston.
- 54:42SPEAKER_01: So I don't think you're really gonna get uh a ton of knowledge about this team through the first couple of games, and you just hope that you know for some reason you don't blow one of these two, but um really excited to watch this team play and see you know who they are as a team.
- 54:55SPEAKER_01: And then that third game of the season, you're at Illinois.
- 54:58SPEAKER_01: So that's you're right into it, man.
- 55:01SPEAKER_01: You got two warm-up games, and then you're right into it against a really good opponent uh who also is preseason ranked.
- 55:06SPEAKER_01: So um again, just excited to see this team, and and we'll talk more basketball as we move forward.
- 55:12SPEAKER_01: But Tristan, anything else before we get to Song of the Week?
- 55:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I just I just wanted to say, you know, it with the energy that's been in the Jones, I can't wait to see the USA lit up again with the fans and the students.
- 55:23SPEAKER_03: So it's make that like a top 10 hardest places to play in basketball.
- 55:27SPEAKER_03: It's been getting so much love from big heads, like the USA is a place people talk about now.
- 55:31SPEAKER_03: And I I I'm excited to see that continue.
- 55:35SPEAKER_03: And other than that, oh, and one last thing.
- 55:38SPEAKER_03: So, you know how we're having the the brand, the brand refresh with the athletics.
- 55:42SPEAKER_03: Basketball's the first one to do it.
- 55:43SPEAKER_03: So the basketball, they've got a new basketball court with a new brand refresh on it.
- 55:46SPEAKER_03: So it'll be fun to see some of the new merch and some of the uh some cool stuff come out with that as well.
- 55:51SPEAKER_03: But other than that, man, let's go ahead and get the song of the week.
- 55:54SPEAKER_01: All righty, man.
- 55:55SPEAKER_01: We'll start her off with you.
- 55:57SPEAKER_03: All right, dude.
- 55:58SPEAKER_03: So, man, I'm gonna go with one of the godfathers of alternative country.
- 56:04SPEAKER_03: Uh, obviously, ball knowers will know this name.
- 56:07SPEAKER_03: Uh, I'm gonna go with Towns Van Zance, an absolute kind of uh prophet of alt country songwriting.
- 56:15SPEAKER_03: And I'm gonna kick it off with one of the most legendary country songs ever made that he originally wrote and sung about some banditos and desperados out there, and that song made him famous by Willie Nelson is Poncho and Lefty by Towns Banzant.
- 56:33SPEAKER_05: Poncho need your prayers, it's true.
- 56:39SPEAKER_03: He just did what he had to do.
- 56:44SPEAKER_03: He just got such a haunting voice, it's just it's so always so nice listening to an original writer sing their song, and that's just a Hall of Fame song written by a Hall of Fame man.
- 56:54SPEAKER_01: Very nice, very nice.
- 56:56SPEAKER_01: I'll have to give that one a listen.
- 56:58SPEAKER_01: Um, you definitely love to see, you know, the original songwriters that don't necessarily, or or I shouldn't say don't necessarily, maybe some people don't see them as the moneymaker per se, or the face of that song.
- 57:12SPEAKER_01: Um, but you do love seeing the original artists sing their original song, so that's a good choice.
- 57:17SPEAKER_01: Um, my song of the week, I was in the car for probably about six hours total last Saturday.
- 57:24SPEAKER_01: Didn't get to watch a lot of the game in real time, did go re-watch it.
- 57:27SPEAKER_01: It was wonderful.
- 57:28SPEAKER_01: But one thing that me and my wife ended up listening to in the car was a lot of old pop punk.
- 57:34SPEAKER_01: We just got into it.
- 57:36SPEAKER_01: Uh, we were right back in middle school, uh, you know, flowing our hair, wearing our baggy t-shirts or from that we got from Pac Sun and uh in our cargo shorts, and we got in our uh we got in our mode.
- 57:47SPEAKER_01: So my song of the week is Good Charlotte.
- 57:50SPEAKER_01: It's the anthem by Good Charlotte.
- 57:53SPEAKER_01: It's a banger, it's still a banger, remains a banger.
- 57:56SPEAKER_01: Anyone that grew up um in the same time frame that we did, uh it's it's just awesome.
- 58:02SPEAKER_01: We love this type of music.
- 58:03SPEAKER_01: It's fun listening to the old school stuff.
- 58:06SPEAKER_01: So um the anthem, Good Charlotte.
- 58:20SPEAKER_03: This is the anthem.
- 58:22SPEAKER_03: Throw all your hands up.
- 58:24SPEAKER_03: Um but you know, it's funny.
- 58:27SPEAKER_03: I was just having this conversation with my wife.
- 58:29SPEAKER_03: How you know, I every gym, I feel like every generation says this, but it feels like rock and roll is dead.
