- 0:17Speaker 1: Okay, Well we're Ruination. We're a hard rock band from
- 0:21Speaker 1: the Fraser Coast. My name is Luke. I play guitar
- 0:25Speaker 1: and sing, and we're here to talk to you about
- 0:29Speaker 1: our album that's coming out, Everything eventually fantasy.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Is that album called Everything and it's eventually coming out?
- 0:35Speaker 2: Or is it everything eventually?
- 0:39Speaker 3: A combination? The combination? Man?
- 0:43Speaker 4: Nice, thanks to join us.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Guys.
- 0:44Speaker 4: Who else have we got here?
- 0:47Speaker 5: So you got me? Brady? I played bass and that's
- 0:50Speaker 5: about it really?
- 0:52Speaker 3: How you planning?
- 0:55Speaker 5: I don't sing too much on this one?
- 0:58Speaker 1: Yeah, Brooks the drama, hide at the buck and hit shit.
- 1:06Speaker 3: That's the best description.
- 1:07Speaker 4: I think sides pleasure chatting with you. Yeah, blood.
- 1:14Speaker 2: So, as you say, Ruination release your debut album, Everything
- 1:17Speaker 2: eventually on October tenth, so it's not far away down.
- 1:20Speaker 4: How we feel about it?
- 1:21Speaker 3: Yeah, awesome.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Man, going to be excited and scared, always nervous.
- 1:30Speaker 4: I'd better getting as against close or is it getting.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Better next week?
- 1:37Speaker 5: Definitely starting to feel the nerves.
- 1:39Speaker 6: But yeah, I think I think, I think it's I
- 1:42Speaker 6: think it's good because the payoff for me there, because
- 1:45Speaker 6: I guess when you're independent, you don't realize sort of
- 1:47Speaker 6: what work goes into it, so you know, the back
- 1:50Speaker 6: end stuff that you're not aware of uspose for the
- 1:53Speaker 6: most part, So yeah, it'll be good to see it
- 1:56Speaker 6: out in the world.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Yeah, tell a bit more about the album from a
- 2:01Speaker 2: musical point of view and what you were going for
- 2:02Speaker 2: with it.
- 2:04Speaker 1: We basically, I guess, like it says, we wanted to
- 2:07Speaker 1: make something that we would listen to as fans as
- 2:12Speaker 1: well as you know, everybody else, something that we'd enjoy
- 2:21Speaker 1: and hoping that people will catch on. And as an album,
- 2:25Speaker 1: it's eleven pretty solid songs. I mean, we've been playing
- 2:28Speaker 1: them live for a little bit, but they're pretty well
- 2:34Speaker 1: fleshed out ideas.
- 2:35Speaker 3: That's a you know, a very collaborative experience.
- 2:39Speaker 5: It was.
- 2:39Speaker 1: It's it's yeah a hard rock gem.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Yeah, Luke, you've been quite little saying that this album
- 2:49Speaker 2: is a reflection of our journey and growth as a band.
- 2:52Speaker 1: So how so, well, that sounded pretty good, didn't it?
- 3:00Speaker 3: Very professional?
- 3:02Speaker 1: So I guess now the you know, the jig's up now,
- 3:06Speaker 1: I guess I've got to explain it.
- 3:07Speaker 3: But yeah, look, I guess as far as.
- 3:10Speaker 1: The songs even but not only the songs, like us
- 3:13Speaker 1: three as musicians bandmates, friends, like the relationships that we
- 3:19Speaker 1: have with each other and other people.
- 3:23Speaker 3: It was very much it was all though.
- 3:25Speaker 1: It was a combination of all those things, and the
- 3:28Speaker 1: songs pretty much just wrote themselves. And that's the best
- 3:32Speaker 1: way that I could think to sum up this journey
- 3:35Speaker 1: so far, you know.
- 3:37Speaker 6: And I was just going to say, like, I mean,
- 3:38Speaker 6: the big thing for us is that we've all been
- 3:41Speaker 6: we've known each other for ages, we've all been in
- 3:43Speaker 6: different bands and playing music for you know, twenty plus years,
- 3:47Speaker 6: but we've never been in position where organically it just
- 3:50Speaker 6: sort of all has happened really well. I mean we've
- 3:52Speaker 6: been geming three years. People's take, you know. But the
- 3:56Speaker 6: music itself is you know, Luke's always had the basis
- 3:59Speaker 6: for it all, but to have it all come together
- 4:01Speaker 6: and then play the gigs and I just had the
- 4:04Speaker 6: rights that we've had, it's sort of it's just made
- 4:07Speaker 6: it pretty easy for us. So your music's you know,
- 4:10Speaker 6: come pretty easy, I guess in the end.
- 4:11Speaker 3: And yeah, we're definitely learning the business on the fly. Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 4:23Speaker 4: One more quite to throw your leak and in that
- 4:24Speaker 4: set money.
- 4:25Speaker 2: But you've also said that it's not just eleven songs,
- 4:28Speaker 2: it's eleven statements.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Yeah, that's absolutely correct, man, best way to describe them there.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Look, there's going to be obviously with everything.
- 4:39Speaker 1: We learned from our you know, masters, so to speak,
- 4:43Speaker 1: but definitely the statement parts because as a band we're
- 4:48Speaker 1: pretty raw, organic, straight down the line, no frills band
- 4:53Speaker 1: and their statements basically, and that's the best way I
- 4:57Speaker 1: can sum that up.
- 4:58Speaker 3: That's very correct. Yeah, Yeah, definitely statements in hard rock.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Now the other picks up where you're twenty twenty two
- 5:10Speaker 2: ep whispers left off, so picks up how thematically or
- 5:13Speaker 2: picks up musically or well.
- 5:17Speaker 1: It's quite funny you bring that up because I've listened
- 5:20Speaker 1: to that old recording the other day, and as good
- 5:23Speaker 1: as it is and as much as I still love it,
- 5:25Speaker 1: I listened to that and I've seen some footage of
- 5:28Speaker 1: US live when we first started, and seen some footage
- 5:32Speaker 1: of US now and write obviously the recordings of US now,
- 5:35Speaker 1: and Yeah, it's definitely been there's a progression there, like
- 5:39Speaker 1: it's it's evolved and it's keeps continues to evolve.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I think we've grown a lot, definitely.
- 5:47Speaker 7: Age and it's writing and everything, gotten more comfortable with
- 5:51Speaker 7: each other and it's definitely it just comes together very
- 5:56Speaker 7: organically with little effort and no fuss.
- 6:02Speaker 5: Yeah, it's the thing too.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Is eleven new tracks on the album or is it
- 6:07Speaker 4: the ones new ones?
- 6:10Speaker 1: Well, six of them are re recorded from the whispers EP,
- 6:13Speaker 1: so for long term fans of the band, they're going
- 6:16Speaker 1: to hear that the organic like obviously the growth in
- 6:21Speaker 1: those re recordings, which is why we opted to do
- 6:24Speaker 1: that because, as I just said, where we were then
- 6:27Speaker 1: and where we are now are two totally different bands.
- 6:30Speaker 1: And then there's five well they are newer tracks, but
- 6:34Speaker 1: we've been playing them more for the last year and
- 6:36Speaker 1: a bit, so yeah, to people that have seen us,
- 6:39Speaker 1: they'll recognize those tracks instantly, and to people that have
- 6:43Speaker 1: never seen us or heard us, they're going to be like, wow,
- 6:46Speaker 1: those tracks are cool.
- 6:48Speaker 3: I hope.
- 6:51Speaker 5: That was never the outset too.
- 6:52Speaker 6: Like we we went in thinking we'll just do another EP,
- 6:56Speaker 6: but as we got comfortable in the studio, we sort
- 6:59Speaker 6: of realized that we probably haven't as good as the
- 7:03Speaker 6: recordings were with Cam when we first did it on
- 7:06Speaker 6: their whispers EP. We just because it had changed so
- 7:09Speaker 6: much for us and you know, yeah, you listen to
- 7:11Speaker 6: the back end of the song. They sound similar, but
- 7:13Speaker 6: the recording process, the sound that Mick gave us at
- 7:17Speaker 6: King Street there, like, it's just made a massive difference
- 7:20Speaker 6: to how the song sound. It's got more of that
- 7:22Speaker 6: live feel in the end, and a lot of people
- 7:26Speaker 6: wouldn't have heard us. So making the change because even
- 7:31Speaker 6: me initially, I was skeptical to re record everything because
- 7:34Speaker 6: you know, the music was out there, let's move on,
- 7:36Speaker 6: but you know, to turn it into an album that
- 7:38Speaker 6: we did ended up being a good idea because a
- 7:42Speaker 6: lot of people haven't heard us, Like a lot of
- 7:44Speaker 6: people we've played with and all that sort of haven't
- 7:47Speaker 6: even listened.
- 7:47Speaker 5: To what we had. So now a lot of people
- 7:51Speaker 5: re experienced that in just a better version. So yeah,
- 7:56Speaker 5: and it's.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Like Brady said, it's again, it's a true representation of
- 8:00Speaker 1: what we what every band that I'm aware of and
- 8:04Speaker 1: friendly with, what we all try and do is we
- 8:06Speaker 1: basically try to record how we sound live because that's
- 8:10Speaker 1: where the magic is. And we brought the widening in
- 8:13Speaker 1: a bottle with the re recordings. I think as great
- 8:17Speaker 1: as like Brady said, as great as the original recordings
- 8:20Speaker 1: are and were, I think the new re recordings we
- 8:23Speaker 1: did at King Street Studio is just massive, monstrous. Plus
- 8:28Speaker 1: we were a little bit more how should we say,
- 8:31Speaker 1: we weren't as green then, like we you know, I
- 8:35Speaker 1: used a few different amps and layered and did all
- 8:38Speaker 1: that stuff, whereas before it was like when bam, thank
- 8:41Speaker 1: you ma'am.
- 8:42Speaker 3: You know.
- 8:42Speaker 6: Yeah, Yeah, the process was sort of five days to
- 8:46Speaker 6: record the initial EP and this one was over a year.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Yeah, we took our time with it.
- 8:54Speaker 3: We could, you could.
- 8:56Speaker 4: Now.
- 8:56Speaker 2: The album comes out on over the tenth but over
- 8:58Speaker 2: the eighth, premier thinking by a heavy called Downard, So
- 9:02Speaker 2: tell a bit more about that.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Well, this is gonna be our It's like what are they?
- 9:11Speaker 1: What are we calling it?
- 9:11Speaker 3: Guys?
- 9:12Speaker 1: The feature track, and it also has a video, our
- 9:17Speaker 1: first ever video that we've ever recorded. So yeah, it's
- 9:22Speaker 1: gonna it's. It's there's a lot of firsts.
- 9:25Speaker 6: It's exciting, it's it's it's a real sort of upbeat
- 9:29Speaker 6: song from the new ones that we did.
- 9:31Speaker 5: It's got the heavy elements.
- 9:32Speaker 6: That we want, especially in the post chorus and stuff
- 9:35Speaker 6: like that.
- 9:36Speaker 5: It really it's not as soft as some of our
- 9:39Speaker 5: softer songs because we really do like that atmospheric sound.
- 9:42Speaker 5: But this is just a straight up rock track for us.
- 9:45Speaker 6: And the video that's that's been done with Ryan, it's
- 9:50Speaker 6: just fantastic. So I can't wait for your premiere on Heavy.
- 9:53Speaker 1: That's Ryan from Crave to everybody, he's a legend with them.
- 10:01Speaker 5: I just wish I had his hair.
- 10:06Speaker 3: I'm sure he might give you a lock of it. Man,
- 10:09Speaker 3: He's got a bit there to spare.
- 10:14Speaker 4: Common theme or thread running through the album music.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Just like I guess we just wanted to basically write
- 10:21Speaker 1: songs and play songs that we liked, and that's the
- 10:25Speaker 1: common thread as guys, we all liked the same stuff,
- 10:29Speaker 1: but we like very different stuff, and I guess the
- 10:32Speaker 1: common theme of that is riffspared with melodic passages with
- 10:38Speaker 1: basically I know it's been said before Black Sabbath meets
- 10:43Speaker 1: the Beatles or such songs are get stuck in your head.
- 10:48Speaker 1: That's kind of a theme that I wanted to be
- 10:50Speaker 1: put through the album as well, and I think we succeeded.
- 10:55Speaker 6: Yeah, definitely, I think I think for me, like because
- 10:58Speaker 6: it's funny, you never really the lyrics here in songs
- 11:01Speaker 6: I've noticed, but doing all the back end stuff and
- 11:04Speaker 6: typing out lyrics for Spotify's and stuff like that, like
- 11:08Speaker 6: the depth of some of the lyrics that Luke's come
- 11:10Speaker 6: through that he doesn't ever talk about really, But you know,
- 11:14Speaker 6: this is a combination of twenty years work.
- 11:16Speaker 5: I see it and it's just come out really good.
- 11:18Speaker 6: Some of the simple stuff as simple, you know, it
- 11:20Speaker 6: doesn't have to have a deep meaning always, but you know,
- 11:22Speaker 6: I'm sure there's some some behind of it.
- 11:25Speaker 5: They're fading gray.
- 11:26Speaker 6: That's a lot of people give us a lot of
- 11:28Speaker 6: good feedback on is one of our softer songs basically,
- 11:32Speaker 6: you know, and lyrically it's it's pretty awesome.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely.
- 11:38Speaker 4: And the cover artwork's pretty cool to you guys.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Basically it's just a schedule to see no evil here,
- 11:42Speaker 2: no evil image.
- 11:43Speaker 4: But do each of those pictures represent one of you
- 11:45Speaker 4: guys in the band?
- 11:48Speaker 3: I think we've all been one of those guys at
- 11:50Speaker 3: one point.
- 11:53Speaker 5: To a degree.
- 11:54Speaker 6: Our mate Brett from Pennsyl to Pixels, he's done all
- 11:59Speaker 6: our stuff for us previously, the shirts that were launching
- 12:02Speaker 6: with our new designs and everything with our tour poster.
- 12:05Speaker 5: He's been the mastermind before it all.
- 12:07Speaker 6: So we gave him a general idea of what we
- 12:10Speaker 6: were chasing and basically left to him. But it definitely
- 12:14Speaker 6: it lends into what we're sort of trying to say that,
- 12:17Speaker 6: you know, everything eventually is very ambiguous. I wasn't sure
- 12:21Speaker 6: at first when we were sort of going with that,
- 12:23Speaker 6: but it sort of lends into it. You know that
- 12:25Speaker 6: he and evil speaking and evil thing of your over arches,
- 12:29Speaker 6: your your master minds to plot behind those sorts of
- 12:33Speaker 6: things that everybody sort of reads into.
- 12:35Speaker 5: And you know, you make it what you will. You
- 12:38Speaker 5: either you either speak up or you don't, or you
- 12:40Speaker 5: hear it or you don't you see it, or you.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Don't pretty much and stay in your own lane, and
- 12:45Speaker 1: you know you want to hear the other titles. I
- 12:48Speaker 1: thought of going, oh no, that's for a whole different segment.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Chris come from the Praise the coast, a little town
- 13:01Speaker 2: called Maryborough which is about three hours north of Brisbane.
- 13:03Speaker 2: But as a band, how difficult is it for bands
- 13:06Speaker 2: like yourself to get a foothold in the music industry
- 13:08Speaker 2: not coming from the capital city.
- 13:13Speaker 5: Like I mean? I think the difference is the social
- 13:17Speaker 5: media thing these days. If you go back to time
- 13:19Speaker 5: when we were playing in original bands, just original bands,
- 13:22Speaker 5: not pub bands. We've all done that, but it was
- 13:26Speaker 5: a lot harder.
- 13:27Speaker 6: I guess you relied more on you pushing yourself out
- 13:30Speaker 6: there and a lot more promoting and all that.
- 13:32Speaker 5: Now it's a little bit more flexible, you know.
- 13:34Speaker 6: I'm a simple message could get you over to play
- 13:37Speaker 6: a gig, but getting consistent gigs is that comes down
- 13:42Speaker 6: to your performance and obviously your personality.
- 13:44Speaker 5: I mean, if you.
- 13:45Speaker 6: If you're a nice guy and play shit music, you're
- 13:47Speaker 6: probably not going to get anywhere. But you know, if
- 13:50Speaker 6: the music sonically, you know, lends to other people, then
- 13:54Speaker 6: we get those gigs. So you know, we've been lucky
- 13:56Speaker 6: to lean on some of the first bands we played
- 13:59Speaker 6: with were some of these guys like Crave and some
- 14:01Speaker 6: of these other bigger local bands in Brisbane and we've
- 14:04Speaker 6: been able to branch out from there and now we
- 14:07Speaker 6: get asked for gigs. So I mean, it's a lot
- 14:11Speaker 6: harder I think physically on us because we're traveling down
- 14:15Speaker 6: and back sometimes in one night, you know, so that's
- 14:19Speaker 6: that's probably more of a toll than anything balancing around family.
- 14:23Speaker 6: We'd love to be playing more gigs every weekend where possible,
- 14:26Speaker 6: and really to do that, you've got to be down
- 14:29Speaker 6: in Brisbane and or the Sunny Coaster really make that happen.
- 14:32Speaker 6: But I think based on where we are, we do
- 14:35Speaker 6: a lot and.
- 14:35Speaker 3: We we definitely.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Push it and we definitely like if for us to
- 14:42Speaker 1: not be able to do it, there's got to be
- 14:44Speaker 1: there's got to be something really like hectic going on.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Because we were pretty much very rarely say no to
- 14:51Speaker 1: any any.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Type of gig and we'll like, you know, we'll travel that.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Forty five minutes that we're up there. It definitely beats
- 14:59Speaker 1: out the three to four hour travel there and three
- 15:02Speaker 1: to four hour travel home.
- 15:04Speaker 3: Like once that energy and that sound on stage is
- 15:07Speaker 3: that's that's that's what it's all about.
- 15:10Speaker 5: Yeah, you forget everything once you're up there.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Pretty much you forget that you you know, your phone
- 15:16Speaker 1: builds you and your dog just had pups or you know,
- 15:20Speaker 1: you just got your resignation either from your job or whatever.
- 15:24Speaker 3: You Yeah, a list of things. That's that's where it
- 15:28Speaker 3: comes from.
- 15:28Speaker 1: So what we're trying to basically say is we will
- 15:31Speaker 1: travel and we will play and it's always it's never
- 15:35Speaker 1: an issue for us.
- 15:37Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, but.
- 15:39Speaker 1: It can, Like you said, the demographic thing, sometimes I mean,
- 15:43Speaker 1: it would be cool to be able to we're playing it,
- 15:46Speaker 1: you know, twenty minutes.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Down the road or something which we which we do
- 15:49Speaker 3: around here.
- 15:50Speaker 1: But yeah, hey, look where they say beggars can't be choosers.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Talking to live shows. You've got a hometown album launch
- 15:59Speaker 2: coming up. Carry his arms, hotel, tell us more about it.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Yeah, correct, that's actually that's the day the album drops too. Yeah,
- 16:08Speaker 1: I believe the tenth. So that's at the carriers for
- 16:13Speaker 1: all you local listeners.
- 16:16Speaker 3: I believe.
- 16:17Speaker 1: What have we got, Holly in a smile on the lineup,
- 16:22Speaker 1: Punctillias and just Us and as just Us is, I
- 16:27Speaker 1: thought there was one other, you.
- 16:28Speaker 6: Know yeah, East Coast Alternative are hosting it, so a
- 16:32Speaker 6: good thing with that. It's a free gig now at
- 16:34Speaker 6: the pub, so any punts that can come along and
- 16:36Speaker 6: just listen and have a drink and then you know,
- 16:39Speaker 6: they've been getting really good crowds for local gigs. The
- 16:42Speaker 6: last one that they had about a month or six
- 16:45Speaker 6: weeks ago, they had I think the biggest crowds have
- 16:47Speaker 6: had through there like one hundred plus people, which for
- 16:51Speaker 6: our area in that side is really good. And they've
- 16:53Speaker 6: gone from gone from having twenty people, ten people to
- 16:57Speaker 6: having that sort of crowd through.
- 16:58Speaker 5: So yeah, yeah, it's growing slowly.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Yeah, you've got to be prepared to have someone that
- 17:04Speaker 2: gives it a chance. You know, too many venues putting
- 17:06Speaker 2: gigs on and after the first two or three when
- 17:08Speaker 2: they're not working, they can Yeah, got.
- 17:10Speaker 1: To give the time exactly, and it's it grows organically,
- 17:14Speaker 1: and that's what's what Brady just said, that's exactly what's happened.
- 17:18Speaker 1: Like the e c A scene, we've seen that grow
- 17:22Speaker 1: and grow and then like they're based out of Bunderberg
- 17:25Speaker 1: and they run shows up in Bunderberg, but to come
- 17:28Speaker 1: here and promote and do stuff here, it's just it's
- 17:33Speaker 1: phenomenal what they're and it's it's gonna be it's going
- 17:36Speaker 1: to be an awesome night, Like it's going to be
- 17:37Speaker 1: a very sonically well we're going to be and we
- 17:41Speaker 1: say we're going to be running, running the not running
- 17:46Speaker 1: the gauntlet, but we're definitely going.
- 17:48Speaker 3: To be on our best behavior.
- 17:50Speaker 1: But also we're going to give the punters something they'll
- 17:53Speaker 1: remember because it's I guess in a way it's kind
- 17:55Speaker 1: of our thing a little bit too for the album.
- 17:58Speaker 4: So right, no other shows you got coming up before
- 18:01Speaker 4: the end of the year.
- 18:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Well, funnily enough, we've been working with Davy from Bostall
- 18:11Speaker 1: Entertainment and he's he's a great guy.
