- 0:01Namaste. Today we'd like to do a reading
- 0:05in Shri Aurobindo's epic poem, Savitri, A Legend and
- 0:11a Symbol. We're going to start with Book
- 0:15One, The Symbol Dawn, Book One, Canter One, the book
- 0:21of beginnings, The Symbol Dawn. It
- 0:27was the hour before the gods awake, across the path
- 0:32of the divine event, the huge, foreboding mind of
- 0:37night alone. In her unlit temple of
- 0:40eternity, they stretched immobile upon silence march.
- 0:47Almost one felt opaque,
- 0:51impenetrable. In the somber symbol of her
- 0:54eyeless muse, the abyssum of the unbodied infinite. A
- 1:02fathomless zero occupied the world. A
- 1:06power of fallen, boundless self -awake between the
- 1:10first and the last nothingness. Recalling
- 1:14the tenor -verse womb from which it came, turned from
- 1:18the insoluble mystery of birth, and the tardy
- 1:22process of mortality, and longed to reach its end in
- 1:28vacant knot. As in a dark beginning of all
- 1:33things, a mute, featureless semblance of the unknown,
- 1:38repeating forever the unconscious act, prolonging
- 1:42forever the unseeing will, cradled the cosmic drows of
- 1:48ignorant force, whose moved, creative slumber kindles the
- 1:53sun's, and carries our lives in its some nambulist
- 1:58whirl. A thwart, the vain, enormous
- 2:02trance of space, its formless stupor without mind
- 2:07or life, a shadow spinning through a soulless void,
- 2:12thrown back once more into unthinking dreams, earth
- 2:17-wheeled abandoned in the hollow gulfs, forgetful of
- 2:21her spirit and her fate. The
- 2:26impassive skies were neutral, empty, still. Then
- 2:33something in the inscrutable darkness stirred, a nameless
- 2:38movement, an unthought idea, insistent, dissatisfied,
- 2:46without a name. Something that wished, but knew not
- 2:50how to be, teased the inconscient to wake
- 2:55ignorance. A throw that came and left a
- 2:59quivering trace gave room for an old tired want,
- 3:03unfilled, at peace in its subconscient, moonless cave,
- 3:09to raise its head and look for absent light, straining
- 3:15closed eyes to vanished memory, like one who
- 3:19searches for a by -god self, and only meets the
- 3:24corpse of his desire. It was as though, even in
- 3:29this knot's profound, even in this ultimate
- 3:32dissolution's core, there lurked an unremembering
- 3:36entity, survivor of a slain and buried past, condemned
- 3:42to resume the effort and the pang, reviving in
- 3:48another, frustrate world. An unshaped consciousness
- 3:52desired light, and a blank prescience yearned towards
- 3:57distant change, as if a childlike finger laid on a
- 4:03cheek, reminded of the endless need in things, the
- 4:07heedless mother of the universe, an infant longing
- 4:11clutched the somber vast. Insensibly
- 4:16somewhere a breach began, a long, lone line of
- 4:21hesitating hue, like a vague smile tempting a
- 4:25desert heart, troubled the far rim of life's obscure
- 4:29sleep, arrived from the other side of boundlessness,
- 4:35and eye of deity peered through the dumb deeps, a
- 4:39scout in the reconnaissance from the sun, it seemed
- 4:44amid a heavy cosmic rest the torpor of a sick and
- 4:49weary world to seek for a spirit, soul and desolate,
- 4:54to fallen to recollect forgotten bliffs, intervening
- 5:01in a mindless universe, its message crept through the
- 5:05reluctant hush, calling the adventure of consciousness
- 5:09and joy, and conquering nature's disillusioned breast
- 5:14compelled renewed consent to see and feel. A
- 5:20thought was sown in the unsounded void, a sense was
- 5:24born within the darkness depths, a memory quivered
- 5:29in the heart of time, as if a soul long dead were
- 5:33moved to live. But the oblivion that succeeds
- 5:38the fall had blotted the crowded tablets of the
- 5:42past, and all that was destroyed must be rebuilt,
- 5:48and old experience labored out once more. All
- 5:53can be done if the God touches there, a hope stole
- 5:59in that hardly dared to be amid the nights forlorn
- 6:03indifference, as if solicited in an alien
- 6:08world, with timid and hazardous instinctive grace,
- 6:14orphaned and driven out to seek a home, an errant
- 6:19marvel with no place to live, into a far off nook
- 6:23of heaven there came a slow miraculous gestures dim
- 6:27appeal, the persistent thrill of a transfiguring
- 6:32touch persuaded the inert black quietude, and beauty
- 6:38and wonder disturbed the fields of God.
