- 0:08back to the Simply Christ podcast hosted by Leon Martin,
- 0:11along with Aaron Keaton, Melvin Martin, Andrew Schrock and Dan
- 0:15Blatz. Let's get right to it.
- 0:18Welcome back guys. You guys are watching.
- 0:20Thanks for being here and with us again on this Monday night.
- 0:24Look forward to keep on going through Colossians Chapter 2
- 0:30this evening and seeing what we can find there.
- 0:36Yeah, you can find previous episodes like I always say on
- 0:39our website, check that out there.
- 0:40Give us like and shares. That's that's good for the word
- 0:44is getting out a little bit where we keep growing a little
- 0:46bit of little bit of the time here as far as people that
- 0:49listen in, which is encouraging and it's because you know,
- 0:53listeners share it or or like it or whatever that that all helps
- 0:57a bunch. So thank you for doing that and
- 1:00thanks for being here. We're excited to be here again.
- 1:04Good evening, Cameron, pleased to have you on here.
- 1:08Melvin, would you open us up with a word of prayer?
- 1:10Sure, let's pray. Father, we come to you tonight
- 1:13and we thank you for this opportunity to be able to get
- 1:17into Your word. And we thank you for Your word.
- 1:20And I pray that you anointed us with your Spirit again tonight
- 1:23and that we could not speak out of our flesh, but we would only
- 1:29bring forth the truth and just stay in context.
- 1:34Father, I just pray that people that are listening, that you
- 1:37would open their hearts and their minds and their ears and
- 1:40eyes to Your Word. And Father, I just pray that you
- 1:44would guide us and direct us with Your Spirit and with Your
- 1:49wisdom. And Father, I just thank you for
- 1:52your many blessing, that thank you for your goodness and Your
- 1:55faithfulness to us. Just praise you and we glorify
- 2:00you. Thank you most of all for
- 2:02redeeming us with the blood of Jesus.
- 2:05And I just pray that we can keep our focus on Christ and on
- 2:09Christ alone, in Jesus name, Amen.
- 2:14Yeah. So I never never mentioned it in
- 2:18previous episodes here, but we have our annual, you know,
- 2:23family camp that we put on out here in Iowa that was this past
- 2:27weekend and really had a good time.
- 2:30We've previously been doing it about six weeks later.
- 2:34So we were six weeks earlier than we were the last three
- 2:37years. And so we had real nice cool
- 2:38weather and no mosquitoes. And we had about 160 or 170
- 2:43people there at this very remote campground where we where we all
- 2:49hang out. So we had a lot of fun.
- 2:50It was a good time and I just wanted to to talk a little bit
- 2:55about. So we had Aaron Keaton was one
- 2:58of the speakers there. He he did two set or three
- 3:02sessions I guess and Ben Sargent out of Virginia did the other
- 3:09three and why we had a good time.
- 3:11I I thought the messages actually meshed really well was
- 3:15kind of a continuous flow through the whole thing.
- 3:18But one of the things that that really struck me and these these
- 3:23messages are all on our YouTube channel.
- 3:27And so you can, you can see those if you go to simply Christ
- 3:31ministries or simply Christ min dot dot com and and find it
- 3:35there, find the links. It was, it was really good.
- 3:39And anyway, one of the things that Aaron was talking about I
- 3:43found really interesting. I'll read a verse in First
- 3:46Corinthians 11 that he read and talked about verse 19 and 1st
- 3:52Corinthians, First Corinthians 11/19 says, for there must be
- 3:55also heresies among you that they which are approved may be
- 4:00made manifest among you. And you know, he was talking
- 4:03about the the whole council, like when we read and when we
- 4:06when we teach or whatever that word that we shouldn't shy away
- 4:10from certain, you know, parts of the Scripture or that we should
- 4:14be selective. We should just read it all and
- 4:16take it all. And but anyway, tell us, Aaron,
- 4:19if you could in a few minutes kind of what you what you were
- 4:22talking about in that verse, would you please?
- 4:24Yeah, I was telling him that I I actually didn't run across to
- 4:27myself. I was listening to podcasts and
- 4:30the guy was given definitions of different words in the Bible and
- 4:35he ran across this word here. And I don't remember if he said
- 4:38this or if I by what he said, it made me look it up, but I
- 4:42actually looked that word up. That word heresies in verse 19
- 4:47and it's actually, it's actually translated sect five times and
- 4:52heresy is only three time and then heresy one time.
- 4:56And I got to thinking about it and, and I was interested
- 5:00because he, he seems to be, I actually didn't know how to take
- 5:04the verse previously because he, he says in verse 18 that first
- 5:08of all, when you come together in the church, I hear that there
- 5:11be divisions among you. And I partly believe it.
- 5:15And then he goes on to say, for there must like it is necessary.
- 5:19Like if you look the word must up, it means like it's
- 5:22necessary. For there must be also heresies
- 5:25among you that like, here's the purpose that they which are
- 5:30approved may be made manifest among you.
- 5:33So he's actually making the point that this this dividing or
- 5:38this splitting off into sex actually shows makes it makes
- 5:44the ones that are approved show up, makes them manifest.
- 5:46So that's what the word manifest means makes it show up.
- 5:49So we that's why I was telling Leon it.
- 5:52We always look at a division or when when when something is
- 5:57taught. And I'm not saying I wouldn't.
- 6:02I was not saying I'm including false doctrine.
- 6:04This. I'm just saying when you address
- 6:06things that are in the Bible, some people get offended.
- 6:08And I made the point in the lesson that if you're offended
- 6:12at what the Bible says, you're not offended at the man, you're
- 6:15offended at the word of God. And when this division comes
- 6:20because of offenses that people have because of this thing or
- 6:24that thing, it actually makes known who is approved and who's
- 6:28not. And like I said, I just never
- 6:30had saw that. I always, I told Leon, I said I
- 6:33always assumed the word heresies specifically pointed to a false
- 6:39doctrine. But it actually more points to a
- 6:42sect of people like this one going this way, believe in this
- 6:45thing, this one going this way, believe in another thing.
- 6:47And I just found that interesting.
- 6:49I thought that was really interesting to run across, but.
- 6:52Yeah, you know, and you and you tied it a little bit with where
- 6:55Jesus turned around and, you know, talking about eating his
- 6:58flesh and and drinking his blood, you know, and it offended
- 7:00some, you know, and he turned around and he said, you know,
- 7:02are you going to leave now? Like in other words, he didn't
- 7:05he didn't cushion the blow of the truth to keep them from
- 7:09getting divided. That's right.
- 7:11You know, and I mean that just I guess the way we were raised or
- 7:15whatever that just doesn't see it seem, you know, like division
- 7:18was definitely always of the devil.
- 7:20You know, you if you're dividing, there's something
- 7:22wrong. But that's actually, and that's
- 7:24kind of what struck me with. That Oh yeah, yeah, because I
- 7:27even read that in first John there where he says that the
- 7:33that people went out from them and and I made the point that
- 7:38they were obviously together and then John says they went out
- 7:41from us, but they were not of us.
- 7:43If they had been of us, then they would have know about
- 7:46continued with us. So in that particular instance,
- 7:49the people that went out by their going out showed you the
- 7:54people that stayed showed you who the ones that was approved
- 7:56was and the ones that went out proved that they were not of
- 7:59them. That's what John says there.
- 8:01That's first John 218 and 19, but yeah.
- 8:07Does it stay there at all? What what the thing was that
- 8:10they. I mean, at first, John, he says
- 8:13he's actually talking about the Antichrist that would deny.
- 8:15He just goes on to say that they deny the father and the son.
- 8:19But that's that's the context of it is when he says there's many
- 8:21Antichrist already. And but but yeah, First
- 8:26Corinthians 11, he just, he just said obviously that's in the
- 8:32section talking about communion, right?
- 8:34I mean that when he the 1st Corinthians 11 starts in 17 down
- 8:38through 19, he's beginning to talk about the communion, but.
- 8:42I guess I'm still trying to figure out what the difference
- 8:44is between heresies or like the like why the word heresy doesn't
- 8:49just work like a big because if there's heresies, a lot of times
- 8:55when they get exposed, then there is a division, but it's
- 8:58still a result of a heresy because you're not one, you're
- 9:01not all of them. So something separating it kind
- 9:04of shows who's and what can. Yeah.
- 9:07Well, I was just making the point if you look, if you look
- 9:09it up, it doesn't actually when you look that word up and look
- 9:14at the different uses of, it's not actually referring to any
- 9:17specific doctrine. It's actually referring to the
- 9:20secting off of people like not not necessarily.
- 9:24In other words, I would have always read the word to say
- 9:27whatever denying that Jesus come in the flesh or denying some
- 9:32particular thing, but that's actually not what it that's not
- 9:35what it's really referring to. It's actually referring to the
- 9:38the the actually one of the definitions reads a body of men
- 9:44following their own tenants. Like the sect of the Sadducees,
- 9:49the sect of the Pharisees, the sect of the Christians.
- 9:52Like it's it's actually a reference to people breaking off
- 9:56into sex. But it was.
- 9:59But it was still a heresy though.
- 10:01Like it's still all inside now. And that, that's where it kind
- 10:05of breaks down. You know, if you look at that
- 10:07description there, me and my wife were talking about this a
- 10:09while because it's just an intriguing idea.
- 10:12But you know, sect is a short it'd be of a sub or a sub word
- 10:16of section, you know, like it'd be a piece of pieces of and
- 10:21where it says there that they using their own.
- 10:24What does it say in the description that I don't have it
- 10:26in front of me? They when you break using their
- 10:29own, in other words, it is actually heresy.
- 10:32It's not the word of God anymore.
- 10:33You know, they break apart because of their own personal,
- 10:37which which is, you know, it is not the word of it.
- 10:40So it's still, it's still fluid, it still holds out with with the
- 10:44word heresy. We're not replacing the word.
- 10:46But it to me, it just, it just fulfills the word.
- 10:49It just kind of an iota to me like this breaking apart so that
- 10:54you actually see the wolves from the sheep, right.
- 10:58Yeah. Yeah, it's not that we're saying
- 11:00heresy is not bad. We're just saying it has a
- 11:02purpose, right? I mean, that that was really the
- 11:04point. It wasn't saying that we're
- 11:06lessening the word to something that's not now bad.
- 11:09He just says that it must needs be like that there.
- 11:12There has to be those things to show who's a manifest and who's
- 11:18not. But I thought you were trying to
- 11:19say that that the people that were, well, secting off are not
- 11:25in error. No, no, no, no, no.
- 11:28That's not what we meant. Yeah.
- 11:29They were definitely in error. Yeah, you.
- 11:34Said there's a purpose. To it.
- 11:35Yeah, yeah, yeah. Let's, let's get into a
- 11:39Colossians chapter 18, shall we? So.
- 11:44Chapter. 2 chapter 2 verse 18 is what I meant.
- 11:48Colossians chapter 2 verse eighteen.
- 11:50There we go. So I'm going to read.
- 11:54Verse 18 says, Let no man beguile you of your reward in a
- 11:58voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding
- 12:02into those things which he hath not seen vainly huffed up by his
- 12:07fleshly mind. Comma.
- 12:09But I'm going to stop there. So he just got done talking
- 12:14about how that verse 13 where he says and you being dead in your
- 12:20sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh hath he quickened
- 12:22together with him having forgiven you all trespasses,
- 12:26blotting out the handwriting of ordinances, which was against
- 12:28us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way and
- 12:32nailing it to the cross. And having spoiled
- 12:35principalities and powers. He made a show of them openly
- 12:39triumphing over them in it. Like Dan, I believe it was last
- 12:43week talking about how there was almost like like him flexing his
- 12:48arm and saying no, you know, he he made a point of showing that,
- 12:52that he triumphed over them in that.
- 12:56And so he is. But if we look at the whole
- 12:59thing, we're still he is convincing the people that he's
- 13:03writing to to keep their trust in Jesus the Christ.
- 13:08That's what he's doing. So he's exhorting them here to
- 13:12net, let not people beguile you or pull you away or draw you
- 13:17away of your reward back, you know, going back to just, you
- 13:23know, voluntary humility and and all the things that you could do
- 13:26on a on a carnal side of things. But Aaron, go ahead with your
- 13:29thoughts on 18 I I I. Don't know.
- 13:34I just kind of the words of it do stand out to you.
- 13:38Let no man beguile you. Like, like somebody's tricking
- 13:41you out of your reward in a voluntary humility.
- 13:47Like it's kind of like they have, they have tricked you kind
- 13:51of like Galatians says, who has bewitched you to, you know, like
- 13:54somebody has tricked them into something.
- 13:58They are. I guess it kind of stood out to
- 14:01me that they are by the by the thing that the person says they
- 14:07are this this person that's being taught or swayed is
- 14:12voluntarily giving up a reward, right?
- 14:17I mean, that's what he, you know, let no man beguile you of
- 14:19your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of
- 14:22angels, intruding on those things which he hath not seen
- 14:26vainly puffed up by his flesh of the mind.
- 14:28So it's I mean, I guess we all recognize that, but we hear
- 14:36things and we're like, oh man, that sounds good, or oh man,
- 14:39that's that that is intriguing or I'm really interested in that
- 14:42subject. And we go down this road and we
- 14:45actually in the process of voluntarily going down the road,
- 14:50we beguile ourselves of our own reward.
- 14:54And that's kind of what I see in the verse.
- 14:55But I know you kind of stopped short of what all it has to do
- 14:59with, but that's what I see in that it's, it's like you, you've
- 15:02not been forced to do so. You, you, you have been enticed
- 15:07into something. You're voluntarily doing it.
- 15:11And, and maybe even they say it that way.
- 15:13Maybe they even say, oh, you don't have to do this.
- 15:15This is just the best way. Or this is the, this is, you
- 15:19know, real spiritual people do these things or real spiritual
- 15:22people seek this road or go down this road and you just
- 15:26voluntarily go into that. And.
- 15:28Yeah. Makes it gives the idea of a man
- 15:33made humility basically a voluntary 1A man made one being
- 15:36not what you want. Oh yeah, you don't want that
- 15:39kind of humility. Oh, yeah, Melvin, go ahead.
- 15:42Yeah, I was as I was studying this earlier today.
- 15:48It, it kind of, and I think we touched on it last week, but it
- 15:51seems like he is making a point here even earlier about how
- 15:57Christ is, you know, he says he blotted out the handwriting of
- 16:02ordinances. In other words, I was kind of
- 16:07looking up that word ordinances. And it, there's like the Bible
- 16:12talks about the law and it talks about commandments and then it
- 16:16talks about ordinances and ordinances is basically just
- 16:21like specific direction or specific, not direction, but
- 16:25specific things that God gave the children of Israel about
- 16:31worship and, and doing sacrifices and all that, like
- 16:34that, that like the specifics of it.
- 16:37And the law is more of a, a round term of, of things that
- 16:43they were supposed to do. They had to do, they had to
- 16:47follow the law, like thou should not steal, you know, and, and,
- 16:50and those kinds of things. And so it's just interesting
- 16:55that he is saying that Jesus dying on the cross took care of
- 17:00those ordinances that was against us.
- 17:03In other words, even the specific details of things that
- 17:07God wanted, wanted mankind to do, following the law and all
- 17:12those things and commandments that he took that and nailed it
- 17:17to the cross. And it also includes voluntary,
- 17:23it says handwriting of ordinances.
- 17:24In other words, it also includes laws that man tried to put on
- 17:30other men, which he's going to point out in the next couple
- 17:33verses. But I had brought up about, I
- 17:37think I quoted revelations where it talks about the book of life
- 17:42and, and, and, and that and, and about the, you know, the books
- 17:46are open and your works are in them when in the day of
- 17:48judgment. And I, I'm not saying that that
- 17:51I don't think that that is was wrong and sorry, that is true
- 17:55what I brought out there, but I think I was going down a Bunny
- 17:59trail. Like, in other words, the
- 18:01context here is in the ordinances and the laws and also
- 18:07man made ordinances and things that men are trying to make us
- 18:11go into or trying to do to pull us away from crimes.
- 18:16And so it's so easy to get out of context.
- 18:19It seems like, and I think I did that when going to revelations,
- 18:22not that that was necessarily not true, but it was out of
- 18:25context. And so that's kind of
- 18:27interesting to me because that he says there in verse 18, let
- 18:32no man begow you owe your reward and involuntary humility and
- 18:38worship of worshipping of angels.
- 18:41It what I see there and what is really stood out to me is that
- 18:46he calls our faith in Christ and in Christ alone a reward.
- 18:53He says don't let someone begal you of that reward in human
- 19:00humility. In other words, man made
- 19:02humility like you were saying me in humidity that I am trying to
- 19:07muster up in my own fleshly strength and believe me, I've
- 19:13done that already. And I know there's a lot of
- 19:14people I've seen that you know have have done that and that is
- 19:19God is not like that. He doesn't want a voluntary
- 19:23humility or man made humility and worshipping of angels.
- 19:27So he's just pointing out that there's men that are going to
- 19:30try and lead you astray or beguile you.
- 19:34Of your reward. And don't let them do that
- 19:37because he says that they're vainly puffed up in their own
- 19:41fleshly minds. And so it's a fleshly thing.
- 19:45It's it's not a a Christ. Or spiritual or spirit.
- 19:50Thing it's actually carnal and fleshly.
- 19:54Yeah, that's right. Good stuff, Andrew.
- 19:57Yeah. I think the you could also take
- 20:01the angle of the whole voluntary thing meaning that it's not
- 20:05founded in the word of God. It's not.
- 20:08It's just a something that some people are trying to put on you.
- 20:15And what it comes down to is from what he said just before
- 20:21that. About not letting any man spoil
- 20:24us through philosophy in vain deceit after the tradition of
- 20:27man which is not after Christ. It's vainly fleshly puffed up
- 20:34ideas of men that is not grounded and founded in the word
- 20:38of God or the Spirit that but it's men trying to bring about
- 20:44some kind of unnatural humility. Disingenuous.
- 20:50It's like someone putting painting their cars black
- 20:56because they want to tell the world that they're humble.
- 21:00You know, people do that like it's a form of humility because
- 21:04my car is black. So I'm not, I don't have that
- 21:06pride. I'm humble enough to drive a
- 21:10black car, so it's a form of humility.
- 21:12But there's no verse that says thou shalt have all black
- 21:15things. You know anything that is not
- 21:18black and dark and devilish? What the hell?
- 21:24You did that, Andrew. And the other thing is what it's
- 21:34really doing is what is robbing your reward.
- 21:37If you're circumcised with the circumcision made without hands,
- 21:41then you've. If you believe that, then the
- 21:46flesh is already gone, right? So why would be still dabbling
- 21:49around in it? It's like I was telling my
- 21:51friend the other day. It's like what we're doing is
- 21:53we're chasing down our foreskin that has been cut off and set
- 21:57apart. It's away from us and we're
- 22:00digging through that foreskin trying to find problems.
- 22:04We're trying to better get that foreskin to become better and
- 22:08better and better, but it's rotting.
- 22:12But yet we're attracted to that foreskin instead of focusing on
- 22:16the things that the spirit now that the old man's cut off, it's
- 22:18cut away. So it's it's robbing us from the
- 22:21reward of believing the that the old man is gone.
- 22:26It's crucified. It's a way where where
- 22:28circumcision with mate with the circumcision without hands, like
- 22:32there's the old body, the old man is gone.
- 22:35The ordinances that had to tell that old man to do the right
- 22:38thing is no longer in effect because the old man is no longer
- 22:42there to be told what to do. Now we have the spirit that is
- 22:46within us and a new man in faith that causes us to be a better
- 22:52person than the man that was under the law and in the flesh.
- 22:56But most people think that in for us to be a better person, we
- 22:59still need the law. So they so they say, well, so
- 23:03you can just murder somebody then because you're no longer
- 23:05under the 10 commandments. And I said, well, if the law of
- 23:08the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus that says to love your
- 23:11neighbors, yourself provokes you to murder somebody, then I guess
- 23:15it does. And I guess you need that law.
- 23:20Yeah. You're really thinking that if
- 23:22you follow the law of the life spirit and the love of Christ in
- 23:26you, it's that love. If you believe in that love, in
- 23:29that redemption, and if that doesn't humble you and you still
- 23:33pop up and think you're something, if you need to murder
- 23:35somebody, you know, I guess you're still under the law, then
- 23:39you're not believing the Gospel. And so the Gospels does make you
- 23:44a way better person. But people that don't believe it
- 23:46still think they need to be under some kind of law to
- 23:49produce some kind of humility. And it's it's a deception and
- 23:55it's beguiling. I was gonna say, I don't know if
- 24:01I should say it or not, but I have a kind of a joke.
- 24:05We really are not wearing a head covering anymore.
- 24:07So why are we, you know, messing around with it, right?
- 24:10Yeah, that's right. Yeah.
- 24:16No, that's that's good. And the, the word voluntary
- 24:20humility, it just means, you know, at will, you know,
- 24:24something that you will to do. It would be, it would be the
- 24:29opposite of an involuntary, would just be like, you don't
- 24:33control it yourself. You know, like an involuntary
- 24:36movement is one that like, like when you when someone scares you
- 24:40and you're like, yeah, that's involuntary.
- 24:41You, you, you do yeah, your hands made that motion, but you
- 24:44didn't command it. And.
- 24:47And that's what Timothy said there, huh?
- 24:49I like what Timothy said there. That reminds me of of in
- 24:53Galatians when Paul said that I don't care if me or an Angel
- 24:57from heaven. Oh yeah, that was you of any
- 25:00other gospel. If you preach it, you're damned.
- 25:04And you know how many people say I was doing this or that and God
- 25:11told me I heard this voice? Like I don't really give a rap.
- 25:15Yeah. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 25:19And for those, not everyone can see those comments, but Guy
- 25:22commented and said that Muhammad listened to an Angel.
- 25:25Joseph Smith listened to an Angel listen to an Angel.
- 25:28New Age listens to angels, you know, ascending masters.
- 25:32And but they are all pursuing voluntary humility, which I said
- 25:38that's that's exactly what we're talking about, just, you know,
- 25:41trying to come up with our own righteousness, our own
- 25:45established way of doing something where a, a humility
- 25:49that God is actually pleased with is one that is involuntary.
- 25:54It's one that comes because of your gratefulness and your
- 25:57subjection to your known master. Then then that you will submit
- 26:03that you'll be in humility. So verse 19, which is just kind
- 26:07of a continuation, but it brings in a few more kind of
- 26:11interesting aspects of this, I think it says and not holding
- 26:15the head. So this is another thing.
- 26:18Not holding the head as the head is just as bad as you
- 26:23worshipping angels. But I'll read the whole thing
- 26:27from which all the body by joints and bands having
- 26:30nourishment ministered and knit together increase us with the
- 26:35increase of God. And Aaron, I'll let you go on
- 26:39this, but it find it interesting.
- 26:41He just wants to be sure that we know that the nourishment is
- 26:45ministered and where God goes, it goes.
- 26:48It is. It is all together if we hold
- 26:51that head as the head where it should be.
- 26:56Yeah, I would say that I don't know all the exact routes or
- 27:03roads they were going down in order to do what he's warning
- 27:08them not to do in verse 18. No, I don't know all the things
- 27:11that was going on in that day that would have been qualified
- 27:14as voluntary humility or intruding into those things
- 27:19which they have not seen. But I know this, that in the
- 27:22process of going down those roads or following those things
- 27:27voluntarily, what they did was verse 1919 says they didn't hold
- 27:33up the head, right. In other words, they, they gave
- 27:37credit to something else for freeing them from sin or from
- 27:42making them humble or for the credit of, you know, whatever
- 27:47they were doing or how. I don't know what all they did.
- 27:50But in the process of doing those things, they were not
- 27:54holding the head from which all the body by joints and bands
- 27:58having nourishment ministered. So he's saying the head of the
- 28:02body, Christ is doing all the nourishing.
- 28:06And they were evidently giving credit to angels as though they
- 28:11had done that right. They were went worshipping
- 28:13angels. They they were evidently
- 28:16intruding into things and saying that an Angel had given this,
- 28:20like the guy mentioned there, you know, had given this message
- 28:23or had given this thought or had taught him this thing.
- 28:26And he says in that process you're not holding the head from
- 28:30which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment and
- 28:34knit together increaseth with the increase of God.
- 28:37That is, if if there is some increase of the body, if the if
- 28:43if you as an individual or the assembly as a whole is drawing
- 28:49closer to God or, or having some positive thing go on amongst
- 28:54them, it's God that's giving that increase, right.
- 28:57And they were evidently given credit to or trying to worship
- 29:02angels for doing that, or maybe their own.
- 29:05He says at the end of verse 18 that they were vainly puffed up
- 29:09by their fleshly mind. They were given credit to their
- 29:12ability to be humble in themselves, as you all already
- 29:15mentioned or whatever. But but in that process, they're
- 29:18not holding the head in the position that he deserves as the
- 29:22one that gives the increase to the body.
- 29:24Yep, sure, that's well done. Yeah, I like it says in
- 29:29Ephesians 4 it says this, and I really love this, these verses,
- 29:34especially verse 14, it's 1415 and 16 in Ephesians 4 it says
- 29:38that we henceforth be no more children tossed to and fro, and
- 29:42carried about with every wind of doctrine, and by the sleight of
- 29:46men, and cunning crackness whereby they lay in wait to
- 29:50deceive. But speaking the truth in love
- 29:54may grow up into Him in all things, which is the head, even
- 30:00Christ, from which the whole body fitly joined together and
- 30:05compacted by that which every joint supplieth according to the
- 30:09special effectual working in the measure of every part maketh
- 30:13increase. So the fact is, is that just
- 30:17like you were pointing out, Aaron that they were they were
- 30:19going to, you know, voluntary humility or angels or whatever
- 30:24and not holding the head Christ. Because listen, if we don't go
- 30:32and to the head or we don't acknowledge the head Christ of
- 30:38the body where all the joints and bands having nourishment
- 30:42ministered it, it doesn't work like we we get tossed to and
- 30:46fro. We get we get deceived and we
- 30:48get beguiled. And that's what he's trying to
- 30:50point out here is that we need to be come back to the head.
- 30:55We need to come back to Christ because that's where our nourish
- 30:59nourishment is ministered and we're knit together and we're in
- 31:02unity. Actually, the Bible says through
- 31:05Christ, not through looking the same or even necessarily
- 31:10believing everything the same or driving the same color car or or
- 31:15whatever it may be. That's not unity.
- 31:17Unity is being knit together in the head, Christ and and nothing
- 31:23else. So that's what I see that he's
- 31:26pointing out here. Yeah, Andrew.
- 31:31Yeah, he just got done telling us earlier in chapter 2 that how
- 31:39we were completing Christ and everything that causes us to
- 31:44become more spiritual minded, more stronger in faith, more
- 31:48free from sin, has to do with US believing in that work that has
- 31:52already been done. That's how that that increase
- 31:57with that our being, our mindset, our faith is in
- 32:00something that has already been done in Christ, which is what
- 32:04God did. Then our increase is from God,
- 32:09our head. That's where it comes from.
- 32:13So to illustrate it, let's say some guy comes along and beguils
- 32:19my wife to go and see some homeless people in some corner
- 32:25and she does a good thing. It's even a good thing she feeds
- 32:3020 people and this guy and her went and did that.
- 32:35But the good things, the reward, the increase, whatever that my
- 32:41wife experienced wasn't from me. It was another source.
- 32:46It came from somewhere else. So most people, well, my life
- 32:50just got so much better since I believed this thing and since
- 32:54God showed me all these things and since these angels told me
- 32:57all these things, I got all this new understanding of humility
- 33:00and what it actually means. The the words don't really just
- 33:03mean what they mean. And and God had to tell me now
- 33:06that those revelation and now I know and you guys don't know and
- 33:10I'm here to tell you what God told me.
- 33:12And you guys don't know until you hear what I have to say.
- 33:14And you know, this whole thing of beguilings, like, yeah, it
- 33:18wasn't what you thought. It wasn't what God just said.
- 33:21Jesus Christ didn't actually make you complete.
- 33:24Here's something you can do. You like someone coming to my
- 33:27wife, say, you know what, your husband, your head, you know,
- 33:30he's got some faults, you know, And she goes, oh, yeah.
- 33:34And then he'd be like, you know, we could go do this together and
- 33:39they could do it, and there could be an increase.
- 33:42But it's not an increase from the head.
- 33:45It's not where we're supposed to come from.
- 33:48And the other thing is how do we expect as a group to have life,
- 33:51the life of Christ and, and have spiritual growth and spiritual
- 33:56wisdom? Because it's obviously very
- 33:58clear that we can either be strong in faith or weak in
- 34:00faith. We can either be have a lot of
- 34:03spiritual wisdom and spiritual understanding that's going to
- 34:05benefit and it's going to change the way we actually live out our
- 34:07lives. And he's saying if we don't
- 34:10increase with the understanding of what Christ did, then we're
- 34:15going to struggle. It's going to be we're we're
- 34:17losing out and it would be like taking your head off and putting
- 34:22a little bit on the side and opening up holes and access for
- 34:28other influence to give you increase that is no longer
- 34:32Christ. It's something else.
- 34:34It's foreign. So we need to reject it.
- 34:37You have to stick with the finished work of crowds.
- 34:40Yeah, yeah, he'll, he'll make a really good argument just ahead
- 34:45here for what you're saying. And that's that's exactly right.
- 34:48But before we go there, Cameron posted this.
- 34:53I want to read it. It's really good.
- 34:55Amen. Christ is ministering on the
- 34:57inside of the believer, so much so that we now are the temple of
- 35:02the living God. What an unsearchable riches
- 35:05richness. Therefore, volunteering or doing
- 35:08Christian minary ministry in ignorance of what Christ is
- 35:12doing inside of the believer is the root of the problem with all
- 35:16the people chasing circumcision or outward forms of godliness.
- 35:20Having said that, I'm fully aware of the many things that
- 35:23arise in life that the Holy Spirit approves and disproves
- 35:25of. There's a fountain of wisdom
- 35:27that comes with having Christ in us.
- 35:30It helps us with numerous things, Wisdom, righteousness,
- 35:32sanctification and redemption, to name a few. 100% I mean that
- 35:37that's what we're talking about. Why would we go back to the weak
- 35:40in the beggarly elements? He says in one spot.
- 35:42Why would we do that? What in the world would make us
- 35:45do that? Other than which we're going to
- 35:47find out in the last verse of the chapter here that there's
- 35:51this, you know, show of wisdom that we all want.
- 35:54We all want to look wise. We all want to look good.
- 35:57And that I think is what convinces us to do these things
- 36:01that are actually not of God. They look good, but they're not
- 36:04of God. That's that's what's so terrible
- 36:06about it, but. We want to be set apart.
- 36:08We want to be visually and visibly set apart, sanctified.
- 36:12There's those are the godly ones, the humble ones.
- 36:16Yeah, but if you we want to shortchange, we want to we want
- 36:20to just take a shortcut around the Holy Spirit's leading.
- 36:25We don't want that. We just want to look good.
- 36:29All right, let's let's keep going here because he spells
- 36:33that out for us here. Verse 20 Wherefore if you be
- 36:36dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why as
- 36:40though living in the world are ye subject to ordinances which
- 36:44are touch not taste, not handle not, which are all, which all
- 36:50are to perish with the using after the commandments and the
- 36:53doctrines of men. And I'll let you go ahead on
- 36:56this, but he is making that exact call.
- 36:59Like why in the world would you be doing this it I mean, it
- 37:03doesn't make sense if you look at the whole picture, but.
- 37:07Yeah, I have had people actually turn this thing I like
- 37:11completely backwards and suggest that he is promoting touch, not
- 37:16taste, not handle on. Like I literally had a guy try
- 37:19to turn this around and suggest that he is somehow, I don't even
- 37:24remember how he said it didn't make enough sense for me to
- 37:26remember, but he was. He was trying to turn around and
- 37:30suggest that he's promoting you to touch, not taste, not handle
- 37:34not and he's saying I mean just listen to the way he said it.
- 37:38We're for like if it's true that you be dead with Christ from the
- 37:44rudiments of the world, why as though living in the world are
- 37:48you subject to ordinances here? They are right.
- 37:52If you're dead with Christ, why would you put yourself under
- 37:55things like touch, not taste, not handle not.
- 37:58I actually heard a guy that and I, I'll not say who it was.
- 38:02He means he's dead now, but I actually like a lot of what he
- 38:06says. But I've heard him say, if you
- 38:09wonder if you, I don't remember, he said it several different
- 38:14ways. But if, if you wonder how, why
- 38:17we're unhealthy or why we're this or why we're that, he said
- 38:23we've got the answer. And he's really pointing back to
- 38:26like, you need to go back and look at what is in the Old
- 38:29Testament, because that's where the real living is.
- 38:32And like I said, and I and I like a lot of the other things
- 38:35the guy says, but but he's points back and saying, listen,
- 38:38if you really want fulfilment out of life, we've got this Old
- 38:44Testament law back here that really will tell you all about
- 38:47the real fulfillment of life. He says, if you're dead in
- 38:49Christ, why would you want to go back and try to find your
- 38:52fulfillment in those things? Right.
- 38:55So I just think that's really interesting.
- 38:57I mean, it's, it is A, and I think it's interesting to notice
- 39:04specifically what he, what he addresses.
- 39:07Like he's not because just like Andrew said a while ago, we
- 39:13obviously are told that we need to love our neighbors ourself,
- 39:16even in the New Testament. So he's not addressing things
- 39:20that that are true. Like Jesus said, the whole law
- 39:25could be fulfilled in one word. Even in this thou shalt love thy
- 39:28neighbors ourself. We're not undermining this
- 39:31concept of loving one another or being charitable to somebody or
- 39:34something like that. When he says this, he's pointing
- 39:37to specific things that, as the previous verses said, you would
- 39:42have to voluntarily do, right? I got to volunteer.
- 39:45I'm going to. I'm going to decide tomorrow
- 39:47that I'm not going to eat pork anymore because evidently that's
- 39:50the right way to live because that's what the Old Testament
- 39:52did. Or I'm aside tomorrow that I'm
- 39:55not going to touch my wife within so many days of her
- 39:59having a baby because that's what the Old Testament says to
- 40:01do, right? I mean, like he's saying, you're
- 40:03going to go back and get in these specific things that makes
- 40:08you appear really spiritual, really spiritual.
- 40:13It really looks it. Really.
- 40:15As somebody said a while ago, it really looks.
- 40:17Good. But he says all that stuff, it's
- 40:19going to perish. I mean, it don't matter if you
- 40:22eat with dirty hands, don't matter how much chicken you eat,
- 40:25don't matter how many, how often, don't matter what kind of
- 40:27relations you have with your wife, how close it was to having
- 40:30a baby or what. None of that matters.
- 40:32It's all going to perish. With the using, yeah.
- 40:36And it's going to perish with the using.
- 40:38So you use, it'll die even if you're it'll die.
- 40:40It's not, it has no stability. You know, it's, it's like God
- 40:45said that, you know, he lives in us.
- 40:48We're the temple. You know, the Holy Spirit is
- 40:50within us, It's guiding us, it's leading us, it's comforting us,
- 40:53all those things. And then we say, yeah, that's a
- 40:55good idea. But shouldn't we also maybe have
- 40:58some kind of church membership program so that, you know, just
- 41:02to make sure? I mean, that is exactly what
- 41:04we're talking about here. Like, so we know better.
- 41:07I would why would you use those elements?
- 41:09But. Well, it just makes me think
- 41:12that, you know, the fact is, is that the reason that these
- 41:17things are in the Bible here is that mankind has the tendencies
- 41:23to do these things and have have had ever since creation and will
- 41:29until Jesus comes back until God decides that this, you know, the
- 41:34end is this world is common and he's going to burn it all all
- 41:37up. But it's just a simple fact.
- 41:40We tend to want to gravitate back to the law.
- 41:45And it makes me think like, so it says, why are you subject to
- 41:49ordinances? In other words, if we're going
- 41:52back to the law like it says somewhere else, I can't think of
- 41:55where it is that if you're going to go back to the law, then you
- 41:58need to keep the whole law like. And the problem is, is when you
- 42:01start. And I had this conversation with
- 42:04another individual just a couple weeks ago about church rules.
- 42:11And I, I said, look, the fact is, is that when you start
- 42:15making laws or rules, it's a never ending thing.
- 42:20And that's how it was with, with the law of God as well.
- 42:24You know, he gave the law, he gave the commandments, but then
- 42:27he had to give the ordinances down to the very detail.
- 42:29And if you read through Deuteronomy and, and, and the
- 42:34script a chapter before that, it's like there's this list of
- 42:38things that every he touched on everything of what they need to
- 42:43do in this case. And in that case, there's just
- 42:46so many things. And that's what happens when we
- 42:49start pulling back to the law even now, as you know, and away
- 42:54from Christ is it's a never ending thing.
- 42:56You're going to have to make a law for this.
- 42:58Well, now we need to make a law with it.
- 43:00It's just we have to make ordinances upon ordinances upon
- 43:02ordinances, and he's just saying, why are you subject?
- 43:06It doesn't work, it hasn't worked and it won't work.
- 43:10And God has given us a way that does work and that is we are
- 43:14dead in Christ. That's what he's saying.
- 43:16If you'd be dead with Christ in Christ, then then you're not
- 43:20subject to these things. And so that's what he's pointing
- 43:24out. But we just want to go back to
- 43:26those things. For some reason we think that
- 43:29Christ is not good enough or or what God has provided in Christ
- 43:33is not good enough or does is not sufficient.
- 43:36And then Xander. Yeah, it comes back to the old
- 43:40crucifixion. Yep.
- 43:42If you're dead with Christ from the world and the things in the
- 43:46world. Why would you need laws to tell
- 43:51you to regulate you to regulate your life.
- 43:57The thing that he's telling us that is a fact that is true that
- 44:03a believer is cut off from the world to the where the world has
- 44:09no power over them. I remember exactly when that
- 44:12happened. I lost any kind of interest in
- 44:16this world to the point that I sold the the most beautiful
- 44:19piece of property that I've ever in this neighborhood.
- 44:22A solar couldn't care less. But before I was safe when I
- 44:26looked at it's like I'm going to do whatever I can.
- 44:29I don't care if I have to work until midnight.
- 44:30I'm going to do what I have to do to get this piece of land.
- 44:33And I would literally get the chitters and I couldn't sleep at
- 44:36night and I'm just like this land.
- 44:39And I could be almost that worked up about a horse.
- 44:43You know, this horse would just get up and I'd be out there
- 44:46shining it all up to impress the people around me.
- 44:50And, you know, this horse would lift up her head and be shiny
- 44:53black hair and it's beautiful and a nice fancy trot.
- 44:58And it would just like, oh, and trucks would go down the road.
- 45:03And all my friends and boys were like, man, look at that truck.
- 45:07But these beguiling people assume is that we're still
- 45:12chopping at the bit at the world.
- 45:15Like if there was a way that I could fulfill my flesh and be
- 45:20obsessed with the world, I would do it.
- 45:23That is a full-fledged law minded person.
- 45:27If there was a gap somewhere that I could have some leeway,
- 45:30what does the law say? How can I get around it?
- 45:34Maybe a little bit. You know, we have all these
- 45:36rules in the Amish church and we have all these rules in other
- 45:39places to kind of guide us where there's not the law of the
- 45:42spirit of life in US. And then we're always like, OK,
- 45:45how can I get around it? So we're trying to.
- 45:49So he's saying, you know what, the circumcision dying with
- 45:53Christ is way more efficient than some kind of ordinances.
- 45:59So why would you go back to it? Some ordinances that was not
- 46:02sufficient. If I can get to the root problem
- 46:06in the agency says that the world is I'm crucified to the
- 46:09world in the world. To me, that sounds like a pretty
- 46:12good solution. So why would we go for something
- 46:15less? Because you don't believe the
- 46:18gospel, that's why you would. You don't believe that you're
- 46:21crucified. You still want.
- 46:22You don't believe that the foreskin is actually cut off.
- 46:25You don't believe you're circumcised or you're still
- 46:26messing around with the old foreskin.
- 46:28You still want to blame the old man for all your bad habits and
- 46:32your bad actions. You still want an excuse.
- 46:34You still want to testify yourself for why you're living
- 46:36like the devil. And I would rather be stumbling
- 46:42and increasing slowly and immaturely with the hat lined up
- 46:47on top and be having the increase of God than to be
- 46:51looking and appearing good on the outside like a coffin and
- 46:55inside it's junk. Jesus hated this is outward
- 47:00looking great, but the heart's evil.
- 47:04Jesus came to change the heart from a Stony heart heart to a
- 47:08soft heart and make us righteous from within.
- 47:12Put that spirit within us that is holy and righteous and
- 47:16hopefully that will grow and it will spill out all over our
- 47:19lives and around all the people. But Oh no, that's that.
- 47:24I know people that say those things and they believe those
- 47:26things and their fruit is just not, it's just not there.
- 47:29So we it just proves that we have to put these regulations
- 47:33that are man made wisdom and beguiling on them.
- 47:36And man, since we did that, we have such order and it's so
- 47:39peaceful. We actually know how to dress.
- 47:41We don't have to think about it. We know how to be humble.
- 47:44We know how to to make anybody stumble because we have it all
- 47:47figured out. But God's still going to come
- 47:51back and say, where was I like, where was I?
- 47:56Where was the head? Where you put me aside to follow
- 48:00your own thing? And that's the warning I see in
- 48:04there. Yeah, I want to I want to touch
- 48:08something that where my thoughts kind of as a whole now that we
- 48:10are kind of through this a little bit.
- 48:12Melvin touched on that verse, you know, about keeping the
- 48:15whole law, you know, like if you're going to keep the law,
- 48:17keep the whole thing. And I think that the whole idea
- 48:22here is the intent of of why you do things is is what actually
- 48:28matters here because he says in verse 19 he said and not holding
- 48:32the head like in other words, so we're not physically holding his
- 48:36head, but we we're not giving its rightful place in our mind
- 48:40when we do things. But look at look at Galatians 5
- 48:45verse two and three say, behold, I Paul say unto you that if you
- 48:49be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.
- 48:52For I testify again to every man that is circumcised that he is
- 48:56ill better to do the whole law. And now if somebody in today is
- 49:02circumcised, that does not mean that he can't you know that he
- 49:08that Christ should not profit him anything.
- 49:09That is not what that's talking about.
- 49:11But if you reckon your circumcision to be your your
- 49:14circumcision to be your source of righteousness, then you're
- 49:18going to have to keep the whole law if you want to do it that
- 49:20way. And is it isn't that kind of
- 49:22like on on a 10,000 floor view? Isn't that what is exhortation
- 49:25is here. Oh yeah.
- 49:27Put your good things that you do in his rightful spot.
- 49:30Realize what it is. Don't look at that as your you
- 49:33know that that's the whole thing.
- 49:35I just, I think that was kind of a good example there in
- 49:37Galatians 5. That's exactly what he's talking
- 49:39about. He's not saying that if you're
- 49:40circumcised that Christ, you have no hope for Christ.
- 49:44Well, it's like, it's like, he's also not saying that murdering
- 49:48is fine exactly, but they're not under the pen commandment.
- 49:52It's good not to murder somebody.
- 49:54Right. It's also good to not even hate
- 49:56somebody, right? So again, it's the assumption
- 50:02that it's almost like people think that we believe the gospel
- 50:07so we can get away with things, but what they don't understand
- 50:10is actually more serious than it ever was.
- 50:14Because if we have something that was so glorious that the
- 50:19people, General Russell, couldn't look into Moses when it
- 50:22came out of the mountain, and the 10 commandments, that
- 50:24glorious that they had to be shielded from the glory that it
- 50:27had if that was to be done away, because we have something much
- 50:31brighter, Can you imagine what that would do?
- 50:34It's much brighter than that. It's much more glorious than
- 50:36that. What is?
- 50:38So our responsibility to walk in righteousness is way higher now
- 50:43than the law because we have something better than the law.
- 50:46It's that the law could not bring life.
- 50:47Had it brought life, we wouldn't need anything else.
- 50:51But it wasn't able to do it. Now we don't have an excuse.
- 50:54Now, if we don't live in righteousness and holiness, I
- 50:57think it's more of a disgrace. It's kind of like what we were
- 51:01doing in the Hebrews where it says if you have tasted Jesus
- 51:05Christ and all he has done and you put it aside, you trot it
- 51:09under foot. And this is a form of doing
- 51:11that, not holding the head by which all the body by trot.
- 51:14That is a part of doing that, and that's the problem.
- 51:18Yep, you're exactly right, Andrew.
- 51:20That's it's more serious, it's what I'm trying to get it close.
- 51:24Yeah, that's right. And as Cameron, he's, he's got a
- 51:28sharp pencil tonight. He's typing away here.
- 51:30We if, if we be dead with Christ, we are alive unto God.
- 51:35People in that state are to live as such and let God lead them
- 51:38from there. This is incredible.
- 51:40How long has humanity waited for such an opportunity?
- 51:44That's exactly right. You know, we were wanting to be
- 51:47LED from the inside and now to just say, oh, you know what?
- 51:51I'll do it my way. So yeah, that's.
- 51:54Good stuff, all right. Verse 23 we'll wrap up with this
- 51:58which things have indeed a show of wisdom in will worship and
- 52:03humility and neglecting of the body not in any honor to the
- 52:08satisfying of the flesh. I I just I mean this is his
- 52:11conclusion of the entire matter. They do look good.
- 52:18They they do look, they do have a show of wisdom and they do
- 52:21have a show of willing worship, humility, you know, neglecting
- 52:28of the body. In other words, you fast or you,
- 52:31you stand out in the rain. Yo, that we're the chicken kind
- 52:35of thing. But stuff like that.
- 52:39Well, but that's what it is. So anyway, and any of your
- 52:43thoughts on that? Yeah, I think you had a great
- 52:46point a while ago that it is a you can see or to me, I can see
- 52:50in his language that the person has a desire to have an appear a
- 52:57humble or a a godlier than thou. In fact, I've got some people
- 53:03lives over here not too far from me that that claim to be, I
- 53:12don't know, it's, it's a weird mix.
- 53:14They claim to be Calvinist, but yet they go back, there's their
- 53:17Sabbath keep, like they would worship on Saturday and they
- 53:20would try to keep all the feasts that the Old Testament has.
- 53:23And I can just see it like it just, you can just see it.
- 53:28They, they have this, they want to appear as a holier than thou
- 53:34kind of person. Like I can just see it in them
- 53:36that they, they want to say that since they'd go back and do all
- 53:40these things that nobody else is doing that they feel superior to
- 53:46this the regular Christian, because they're doing this all
- 53:49this hard stuff and all these things that are in takes great
- 53:53humility to do and takes great sacrifice to do this.
- 53:57You know, they don't give in to the body and eat just anything
- 54:01they want. Their their diet is kosher and
- 54:04all that stuff, you know, and I just, I don't know, I thought of
- 54:09this verse as you was talking there 2nd Corinthians 10 and
- 54:1212:10 Second Corinthians 10 verse 12.
- 54:15He says, for we dare not make ourselves of the number or
- 54:19compare ourselves with some that commend themselves, but they
- 54:25that is the ones that commend themselves.
- 54:26But they measuring themselves by themselves and comparing
- 54:32themselves among themselves are not lies.
- 54:36They're not wise. I mean, they may be going around
- 54:38patting each other on the back. They may be saying, yeah, man,
- 54:41we are the only ones giving this thing up or not doing this
- 54:44thing, you know, not eating this thing or or we're trying to keep
- 54:49all those Old Testament shadows still today that that pointed to
- 54:52Christ and they can pat themselves on the back.
- 54:55But he said that's not wise. You're not smart.
- 54:58You're not, you're not wise than that, but.
- 55:02Oh yeah, that's right. Good stuff, Melvin.
- 55:05Yeah. You know, I think of this verse,
- 55:08he's just kind of wrapping it up here like you said.
- 55:10And I think when he says about neglecting of the body, what
- 55:17comes to my mind or thinking of that is like you said, when
- 55:21we're trying to trying to do things physically to try and
- 55:27show that we're spiritual or that we're holy and in an
- 55:31outward appearance. But the Bible says that God
- 55:36wants to be in our hearts and he he sent us the Spirit.
- 55:39He wants to be in US like, like at what's his name was putting
- 55:45on the court on the chat, you know, because God, God wants to
- 55:50be in us. He wants to guide us from the
- 55:51inside. He doesn't want this outward
- 55:55thing and neglecting of the body.
- 55:56We think that that's such a, a humble thing or such a holy
- 56:00thing, or that I'm sacrificing myself.
- 56:04Look, God, I'm sacrificing for you and God really doesn't care
- 56:08about that. And so that was one of the
- 56:11things that point out to me because we already talked about
- 56:14humility and, and also in in will worship that we're just
- 56:19worshiping because we think that that is the thing to do and, or,
- 56:24or that it looks good or, or we, whatever it may be, it says it
- 56:30And that is he wraps it all up there, says that is not in any
- 56:33honor to the satisfying of the flesh.
- 56:36In other words, it's, it's an empty thing.
- 56:39It's it's a vanity thing. It doesn't satisfy even your
- 56:42flesh. It doesn't satisfy anything
- 56:45really, especially not God, but it doesn't even satisfy your
- 56:49flesh. So anyway, that's just these
- 56:53these verses are so good. When I read these after I got
- 56:57saved, it's just like it was just enlightening to me that the
- 57:03the Christ it is only in Christ and what Christ has done for us
- 57:08and we need to stay focused on that.
- 57:10It's so easy to get distracted into laws and ordinances and all
- 57:17these things. We we think that we need to do
- 57:19something. We, we want to try and look
- 57:22special or we want to be like almost in a good spiritual way.
- 57:28We want to try and look like we're really spiritual, we're
- 57:31really connected to God. And then we get derailed and
- 57:35into, you know, trying to keep things going on our own flesh
- 57:40and our own selves and not relying on Christ and relying on
- 57:44God. Yeah, which is actually going to
- 57:46continue to spiral if that's what you're chasing.
- 57:49You end up in a shipwreck completely eventually because
- 57:51it, it's not sustainable, that kind of life, you know, I've
- 57:55tried it. We, we all have probably set
- 57:57some point in our lives, try to make trying desperately to
- 58:00maintain our image against all odds, you know, because I never
- 58:04had any luck maintaining my flesh or directing it.
- 58:08It worked, Andrew. Yeah, this is the verse that I
- 58:15was reading and studying when the scales fell off of my eyes
- 58:18for the very first time. Oh, nice.
- 58:20I was studying this passage, these passages.
- 58:24I I looked up as a Schwarzen trooper, Amish, 23 years old,
- 58:30not knowing nobody told me how to study the Bible, but I was
- 58:33told that we're following the laws of man and it's not
- 58:36biblical. So I looked up everywhere the
- 58:39word law was used, which in German was such and I was doing
- 58:43this in German and I came, I came across a lot of the word
- 58:51laws and satsangling and Colossians.
- 58:54And then I was reading about touch not taste not handle not.
- 58:57And it's like here it is. This is why we're of Amish.
- 58:59Like This is why we're Amish. It's a good thing, you know,
- 59:03that's why we're subject to ordinances.
- 59:05You know, I was reading it in the wrong context.
- 59:07I didn't follow it. But then he says in verse
- 59:10something which are all to perish with the using after
- 59:12commandments and doctrines of men.
- 59:14And I was like, Amen, like, you know, it all wears out.
- 59:17So what a small thing to, you know, to punish ourselves and
- 59:21then neglect our bodies for the cause of being humble.
- 59:25And then I read verse 23 and I didn't like the word show in
- 59:30there, which things have indeed a show of wisdom in world
- 59:39worship and it doesn't sound good.
- 59:41And then I read it. I, I backed up and read again
- 59:44and I know all of a sudden I realized it's all a negative.
- 59:48He's not saying this is a good thing to do.
- 59:49He says this is actually what is keeping you from believing the
- 59:52gospel. It's beguiling you.
- 59:54It's chasing you away from the life of God.
- 59:58You're it's, you're the head's in the wrong place.
- 1:00:02And then I write it again and I was like, dude, it's spelling me
- 1:00:07out completely, totally exposed me.
- 1:00:10And at that point? The the the light came on and I
- 1:00:16left the Amish I think 2 weeks later, like from completely
- 1:00:19Amish to completely like believing the gospel right then.
- 1:00:24But the beguiling that then was already in my head was OK, I got
- 1:00:30it. I called the believers up that
- 1:00:32were trying to witness to me and I said I got it.
- 1:00:35I want to get born again. And, you know, in my mind, I
- 1:00:38didn't do the thing I was just studying in.
- 1:00:41I just understood it and I got it.
- 1:00:44And everybody that tried, I talked to is like, you are
- 1:00:47saved. You believe the gospel.
- 1:00:49And that's like, I'm not letting any man tell me anymore what to
- 1:00:52do. I've done that long enough.
- 1:00:57And I tried to do the whole confession and, you know,
- 1:01:02praying and asking God to forgive me and to save me and
- 1:01:04asking Jesus in my heart. I'd respond to every altar call
- 1:01:08a miserable mess for like two years and until I finally
- 1:01:14realized that I believe the gospel the moment I let go of
- 1:01:19putting on this show of wisdom. And I read that a little
- 1:01:23different than what you did, Nolan.
- 1:01:26I think it's a continuation and you can correct me, you guys, if
- 1:01:29I if I'm wrong, which things have indeed a show of wisdom and
- 1:01:32world worship and humility. It makes you look humble.
- 1:01:36In fact, you're neglecting the body looks good.
- 1:01:40Look how they go on their horse. And Bucky.
- 1:01:42They're neglecting the body. You think it's satisfying their
- 1:01:45flesh? No.
- 1:01:47No, they're really denying the flesh.
- 1:01:51Not in any honor to the satisfying the flesh.
- 1:01:54So humble, so sweet, so good. That's the way I read that.
- 1:02:01But that's that's good. And and it's not that denying
- 1:02:05the flesh is even wrong. I mean, if you look, I had to
- 1:02:07think of in regards to that what Aaron had uncovered this.
- 1:02:11I don't remember what he was preaching about anymore.
- 1:02:13But over the weekend we read where Paul was speaking as a
- 1:02:17fool in the 2nd Corinthians 11, where he said that he was in
- 1:02:21laborers more abundant and stripes about measure in prisons
- 1:02:24more often and and death OFT. He was, you know, five times
- 1:02:29received 40 stripes and beaten his rods and all that good
- 1:02:31stuff. You know, so he was there was a
- 1:02:34lot of stuff happening to him, but it definitely wasn't show
- 1:02:37for a show of will worship. You know what I mean?
- 1:02:40Like so he didn't I I'm sure he didn't like those things.
- 1:02:42He denied the pleasures of life for a season.
- 1:02:45Of course he did, but it wasn't so that people would see him
- 1:02:48denying the pleasures of life. It was so that people would get
- 1:02:51the gospel. That's.
- 1:02:53Right. Well, he's he's actually saying
- 1:02:54that if you're dead with Christ, you don't need to put on a show
- 1:02:57of connecting your body. You're it's you're just free
- 1:03:00from it. You're dead like you, you can
- 1:03:02completely deny the flesh even more so you don't have to make
- 1:03:06it look like you're denying the flesh.
- 1:03:10You're just denying it for sure. Like a Christian should be seen
- 1:03:14as somebody that can be in an environment where the flesh just
- 1:03:20would normally come out and he's just like, yeah, whatever.
- 1:03:23Like I smashed my finger and I can just start cussing.
- 1:03:26Or if one of my work Co workers is probably the biggest trial
- 1:03:29for me to not get heated, like why would you do it that way?
- 1:03:34You know, like I know that that's going to break if you did
- 1:03:37that, like what a you know, you know, and you get the flesh ones
- 1:03:42to like. And if AI think if a boss can be
- 1:03:46keep his cool the whole time, that is someone that believes
- 1:03:50he's dead. That's the true task.
- 1:03:57Oh man, yeah, it really is. No, that's that's good.
- 1:04:01So in conclusion, realize that we are in dead, dead with
- 1:04:08Christ. We are alive unto God.
- 1:04:10He is our ruler. He lives in us, He guides us,
- 1:04:13directs us, He does all these things for us and we have no
- 1:04:17need of making a voluntary show of our life.
- 1:04:22I think if we live out our life in the Spirit, that will be show
- 1:04:28enough for anybody in the world. And you know, and if we
- 1:04:32continue, you know, how do you guys do that?
- 1:04:34How do you walk that way in life?
- 1:04:37Because Jesus died on the cross and let me live in him, that's
- 1:04:39why. I actually got a good example of
- 1:04:41that. It just came to me real quick.
- 1:04:44I remember in my horse and Bucky and it's winding, I'm blowing
- 1:04:50and it's just in my face like ice.
- 1:04:54I'm freezing. I look right next to me in a
- 1:04:57four lane highway nurse's car with this chick in there, her
- 1:05:01hair down, sleeveless shirt and enjoying her life in that
- 1:05:06beautiful car. Completely comfortable.
- 1:05:10I could tell she's 100% comfortable and I'm here mincing
- 1:05:13in the wind and like. But I'm denying my flesh and she
- 1:05:16is living in the flesh. Yeah, such a good Andrew
- 1:05:21Schrock. Such a good boy.
- 1:05:28That's that's funny. That's a funny example, but it's
- 1:05:31not what we're reading about here.
- 1:05:33It's actually not funny. It isn't fun.
- 1:05:35He's really getting on their case here, Which.
- 1:05:37Very beguiling. It is.
- 1:05:39Yep. All right, we're out of time
- 1:05:42already, so we're going to cut it out for tonight.
