- 0:32All right, everybody. Hello and welcome back to
- 0:34another podcast episode here on midgard musings.
- 0:37I'm your host. My name is Jessie and I want to
- 0:39thank you so much for listening to today's episode.
- 0:42Got a couple things I want to go over before we get into the
- 0:47subject matter, for the episode today, which is going to be a
- 0:51real fun one. I think you guys are going to
- 0:53like it. I want to talk a bit about Just
- 0:56a little bit. Anyways, of the historical
- 0:58accuracy of heathen holidays. And, and how some of the more
- 1:06modern or common views, or approaches of, you know,
- 1:11celebrating these holy Tides have a bit of.
- 1:17There's some conflicting information that what people
- 1:22think is accurate to historical times versus what actually she
- 1:25is. Okay.
- 1:27So that's going to be the subject for today's episode.
- 1:31But before we get into it, I do want to address a few things.
- 1:35First of all, this is probably going to be the last episode on
- 1:43the podcast platform, for at least a little while.
- 1:47The reason for that is because I've recently stepped into a new
- 1:53role at my job and it's requiring To change my schedule
- 1:58change my, you know, approach to things.
- 2:00And it's it's it's an adjustment period.
- 2:04Okay, and so I'm stepping into new roles having new positions.
- 2:08It is a bit of a leadership position and, you know, due to
- 2:13that. I've got a lot of adjusting to
- 2:15do. So trying to juggle the new job
- 2:17position along with just the regular every day to day normal
- 2:21life stuff outside of my work. It's causing me to really Ali
- 2:26focus more on my career. So a lot of the extracurricular
- 2:30stuff that I do for midgard musings is, you know, really
- 2:35taking a step back in the grand scheme of things.
- 2:38The YouTube channel is going to continue to put out content.
- 2:43I'm going to continue to put out content on the regular days that
- 2:46I do that which is once a week Sunday night, or Monday
- 2:49mornings, depending on how things go there.
- 2:52And then on the Facebook page, I do the live streams.
- 2:56On Sunday nights at 7:00 p.m. Central Time.
- 2:59So I just want to let all my listeners know that I'm not
- 3:02going away 100% but I am just, you know, taking a step back and
- 3:09really focusing on things that mean the most to me in my
- 3:12Hearth, you know, building my career and stepping into this
- 3:16new role and really finding my place there.
- 3:20Once things calm down. Hopefully, I'll be able to
- 3:22resume more regular podcast. There may be A few odd men ones
- 3:27that come out here regularly, but I just want to let you guys
- 3:30know that if you don't hear from me once a week on Wednesday
- 3:33mornings, like you're used to that.
- 3:35That's the reason why. But like I said, I'm not going
- 3:39anywhere. You go to facebook.com slash
- 3:41midgard musings, you go to youtube.com slash midgard
- 3:44musings. Check all my stuff out there and
- 3:48I will be there on on a semi-regular basis.
- 3:51Like I said, the videos go up once a week Sunday night, sir.
- 3:55Early early, Monday mornings. And so I am just going to be
- 4:00still doing that. So no, need to be alarmed.
- 4:02Everything's good. Everything's great actually, but
- 4:05I do just need to make sure that my focus is where it should be
- 4:08on my career path. So that being said, I do ask
- 4:13everybody to please continue to support midgard musings in any
- 4:17way that you can this podcast does get distributed on multiple

- 4:34with your Heathen or Heathen, curious, folks, anybody that may
- 4:38be interested in learning learning more about some of the,
- 4:42you know, facts about North Sea then re instead of just what
- 4:45they may have, you know, heard or picked up from Facebook
- 4:51groups or some folks that may not be 100% into it.
- 4:55I try to be as open and as accurate as possible, of course,
- 4:59still stating that there are some things that are definitely
- 5:04my own UPG went in. As that applies.
- 5:07My unverified personal, gnosis. My, you know, the way I see the
- 5:11world kind of thing, but I do try to aim especially on this
- 5:14podcast platform to first of all, deliver the, you know,
- 5:18someone historical and accurate things that we know for sure

- 7:11and then come back and get into some real, some bullet points
- 7:17about the historical accuracy of heathen, real of holidays, when
- 7:25They were observed, not so much, the how they were observed, but
- 7:28in terms of the wind, all right, so get yourself comfortable and

- 9:31should check out these four friend of mine fellow Heathen.
- 9:35He's the go, the of the creek gar folk out there and he's

- 9:40His name is Eric word, Weaver, shervin, and his YouTube channel
- 9:45is called the Ravens call. If you go to YouTube and just
- 9:48search the Ravens call and the YouTube search, you'll find his
- 9:53channel. He does weekly videos, usually

- 10:04So they're up really early in the day in the middle of the
- 10:06week. Great content.
- 10:09Really neat approach to Heathen Ruiz.
- 10:11Got a great, I think a great view for not just, you know,
- 10:18heathens coming into this path new but also folks that have
- 10:21kind of been treading this path for a while and maybe learning
- 10:26things as as they go and Eric's a great source to learn things
- 10:29from. I know I've learned a lot.
- 10:30So I definitely encourage everybody.
- 10:32That's listening here on the podcast to take a moment and go
- 10:35check out Eric's Channel again. That's the Ravens call.
- 10:38He also does some neat media reviews on that channel uploaded
- 10:43on a different schedule. I think he calls that the raving
- 10:46Ravens reviews. It's pretty fun stuff.
- 10:49He does like reviews on video games, movies, Comics, it
- 10:54basically I think video Kind of media really so that he's just
- 10:58started that. But anyways, really great
- 11:00Channel. Really awesome guy.
- 11:02I've had the pleasure of collaborating with him a bit.
- 11:05So please go ahead and check out Eric's Channel.
- 11:07Appreciate you guys support. Let's get back to the podcast.
- 11:21Alright, welcome back guys and gals ladies and gentlemen boys
- 11:24and girls. Everybody.
- 11:26Thank you so much for joining me back again, for this little bit
- 11:30of a discussion about just some of the points that maybe get
- 11:35overlooked or misrepresented in terms of, when historical
- 11:41Heathen re was observed. All right.
- 11:45So what we're looking at, is the fact that a lot of folks,
- 11:49nowadays getting into Heathen, re are, you know, excited about
- 11:53it. I may have talked about this and
- 11:55either another podcast. So during one of my YouTube
- 11:58videos, some of those things kind of mingle across over a
- 12:01bit. So I may be repeating myself a
- 12:03little bit here, but one of the things that I noticed, a lot of
- 12:07newer heathens kind of get into when they're discovering, this
- 12:11path is, you know, when to observe certain holidays, what
- 12:18holiday is to observe that sort of thing.
- 12:22And what you'll find is a lot of folks, when might Jump onto the
- 12:27internet, type in a Google search for you know, Asatru
- 12:30holidays or Heathen holidays. And the large majority of what
- 12:37you're going to find. When you Google something like
- 12:39that. Is this kind of wheel symbol
- 12:45with various points marked that indicate certain holidays that
- 12:52are celebrated. It's usually about eight
- 12:55different holidays. That are marked along their you
- 12:58going to see stuff like you'll you going to see stuff like
- 13:02while pure gets knocked, you're going to see stuff like winter
- 13:05nights All-Star, you know, Midsummer all these types of
- 13:11things. You're going to see long this
- 13:12and then other ones as well. Right?
- 13:15So what we see when we're looking at that, is where
- 13:18actually not seeing a historical accurate, her historically,
- 13:23accurate heathen. Dramatic, even now specifically
- 13:28and we're not seeing historically, accurate Germanic
- 13:31Heathen calendar. If you want to call it such,
- 13:35it's not it's not anything that's of Germanic paganism,
- 13:40accuracy. Right?
- 13:40What we're seeing is a model off based on the solar calendar of
- 13:47Celtic and Gaelic paganism and it's and it's become what we
- 13:53receive referred to as the wiccan wheel of the year.
- 13:57All right. Now this kind of came into the
- 13:58whole Norse Heathen ring or dramatic heat, Andre window
- 14:04somewheres in the 70s, the 1970s.
- 14:07And again again, the wiccan wheel of the year is based off
- 14:10of the solar calendar that comes around from Celtic and Gaelic
- 14:16Pagan areas. Right?
- 14:19So even though that the Celts and the gaels didn't, you know,
- 14:23are any of those people didn't know or venerate the SC?
- 14:26Here are the Norse gods. We still see that this model.
- 14:30That's this Wiccan wheel is adopted her or used for a lot of
- 14:34these newer heathens are also true, you know, people of
- 14:39interest that want to follow that path.
- 14:43The the most modern accepted asit review.
- 14:49The the more modern idea of certain holidays is that there
- 14:55are three or four I love them throughout the year.
- 15:00There's not a total of eight that you see in the wiccan wheel
- 15:02of the year. And the other thing that we see
- 15:05is that in the wiccan wheel of the year that is based off of
- 15:07this Celtic and Gaelic pagans, which are Solstice and Equinox
- 15:13based that you know, historical Heathen re didn't like the
- 15:19historical Norse folk the Norse heathens of from Scandinavia and
- 15:24what not. They did not Observe their, holy
- 15:28Tides, or there or there timekeeping.
- 15:30They didn't have a calendar that was based off of solstices or or
- 15:35equinoxes. Okay, they were lunar base.
- 15:39All right. So what we're going to go into
- 15:43now a little bit, is the fact that there are really three
- 15:48historical Heathen calendars from between the 8th.
- 15:52Well, actually from all the 8th 9th and 10th.
- 15:56Centuries and these historical, heat and calendars showed that
- 16:01full moons. After solstices and equinoxes
- 16:04marked Beginnings or marked a month Cycles.
- 16:11Okay. So the the these these
- 16:18calendars, they're specifically there's one recorded by the
- 16:23slant Icelandic and all thing around. 9:30 ad that it lists 12
- 16:31lunar months and it's interesting to note that the the
- 16:38Germanic word Manos and there's a couple other words from like
- 16:47that. Believe.
- 16:48It's like a mano with Mano with month or is the Old Norse word.
- 16:53Anyway, admits cycle of the moon.
- 16:56So the word moon is in our English Modern, English is
- 17:00definitely related to the word month.
- 17:03And as you know, there are from from one full moon to another
- 17:08full moon, even in today's Reckoning.
- 17:11And by looking at the calendars when full moons, there's, you
- 17:14know, a month cycle, 30 day cycle to happen between the full
- 17:17moon. So it makes sense that this is
- 17:21how our ancient Norse ancestors would record time.
- 17:26Or keep track of things. So, when we come back after
- 17:31this, other after this, one more brief break from commercial
- 17:34break. I'm going to talk about the
- 17:37three major dramatic holidays for for Nordstrom Germanic
- 17:45paganism. Okay, I'm not going to be going
- 17:47into any of the Anglo-Saxon or other Saxon types of holidays
- 17:52that get get get observed. We're going to be talking,
- 17:55mainly just about The three. Big dramatic, Nordstrom attic
- 17:59holiday. Some the ones that I tend to
- 18:03want to focus on myself personally.
- 18:04Now, when we come back, we're going to talk about that.
- 18:07We're also going to talk about some other things that get into
- 18:10outside of the historical Realms and into the more, you know,
- 18:13personal gnupg type stuff. So we back after another short
- 18:18break, you guys stick around talk to you here in a little
- 18:20while. Hey everyone.
- 18:32Thanks for listening to the podcast thus far.

- 22:53your convenience. It's really appreciate it.
- 22:56All right. So let's let's talk about really
- 22:58just the three major Norse holy Tides or Norse holidays.
- 23:03That we know that our of that are documented in historical
- 23:07sources, that show of, or indicate kind of the Winds, you
- 23:13know, roughly what time. We're looking at the time frames
- 23:17of what we're looking at here. Okay, there again, there are
- 23:24three. Three major Norse holy Tides.
- 23:28No, bloats. What do you want to call them?
- 23:32And they are, we find them in in context of the England gonna
- 23:37Saga as well as some other references and they were done
- 23:40publicly uppsala. All right.
- 23:44So let me just my mic here. Sorry about that.
- 23:48The, the public events that were held the public boats that were
- 23:53held. This is why we know that Exist
- 23:55in why they were important because they were there public
- 23:57thing will again. What other smaller ones that
- 23:59maybe weren't documented that may have existed.
- 24:02We can't say for sure because we don't have that documented.
- 24:04We don't have it, my nothing to go by.
- 24:07So the first one that we know of these aren't necessarily going
- 24:10in specific order, but we're going to talk about disa bloat
- 24:15or the winter nights. So this is attested to in the
- 24:21vegans Saga and in old Norris winter nights is via Terminator
- 24:28and it comes around the onset of winter.
- 24:32It was a specific time of year in medieval Scandinavia, and it
- 24:36referred to the quote three days which begin the winter season.
- 24:43And from a historical aspect. We see that.
- 24:47It usually fell around the late October ish time frame.
- 24:55In the house, the mountain house to mount another month.
- 25:01And it would be around. You know, it would be on,
- 25:05whatever for whatever date that full moon would fall on whatever
- 25:10time that full moon would fold fall on.
- 25:12So again, we're not seeing an example of a specific solar date
- 25:18for these holidays. In the in these boats to be
- 25:20held, they were strictly based on when the Moon's cycle would
- 25:27go. So you can we can we can safely
- 25:30surmise that for instance. This uploads would be held on
- 25:35the winter night full moon of that house month or month, and
- 25:39it wouldn't be on the same date. Solar date every year because
- 25:43the lunar cycles, obviously change a bit, right?
- 25:47Full moon doesn't ever fall on the same day.
- 25:50Maybe a day or two different every year.
- 25:54Next one that You are often familiar.
- 25:56We are all quite familiar with I think, is you'll, or and it
- 26:00would be, and it would fall around midwinter.
- 26:04Alright, so in the home screen, gloor Saga of how can the good,
- 26:09which is documented, somewhere around, 12:30 ad, we read the
- 26:14following that says, quote, the first night of, you'll was
- 26:18hooking your that is midwinter night and you'll was held for
- 26:23three nights. Now, the context of hulking the
- 26:27good in this section of that Saga, is that hulking is trying
- 26:31to force a native Heathen. So community population into
- 26:37Christianity, right? And so, he will be moved, you'll
- 26:43to the same date as the as Christmas, which was then held
- 26:48on the solstice of the Julian calendar, which is December
- 26:5325th, and is even still held. This day so pre-christian,
- 26:58you'll was traditionally a three-day long holiday that
- 27:03started on a full moon and again not on a fixed solar date.
- 27:09Midwinter, you know means three full moons.
- 27:14After the full moon that began winter.
- 27:19So so three full moons after the beginning of winter nights
- 27:23Victor. Victor, not Victor.
- 27:24No, Later, right? And then also it would be three
- 27:29full moons before the full moon, that begins summer.
- 27:34So we're right in the middle. That's why we, that's why it's
- 27:38midwinter. It was not halfway between
- 27:42equinoxes on a day called Solstice, right?
- 27:46That's that's an entirely Celtic Gaelic Pagan thing.
- 27:50That is used by wiccans and the wiccan ization as week.
- 27:55I want to call it of Norse traumatic paganism.
- 27:59That's where it has kind of bled over.
- 28:01So for those that are interested in, maybe following a more
- 28:04historically, accurate time frame of when to observe, you'll
- 28:12the ulam under is through January ish.
- 28:17Okay, and the you will bloat is on the full moon again, three
- 28:23full moons. After the on Onset of winter
- 28:26nights so you can look at your calendars today for this year
- 28:32and see where the full moon lands in October and then three
- 28:38full moons after that would be on that.
- 28:41Third full moon would be when you would, if you want to
- 28:45observe a historical approach to You'll you would start celebrate
- 28:50it, you know, then. All right.
- 28:55Now, thirdly the and this one is probably the biggest most
- 29:01important sacrifice most important bloat out of the mall.
- 29:07Our Visa, blows annual the third that I'm mentioning.
- 29:10Now comes as the highest and most highly regarded, and that
- 29:14is Seeger blocked, which is the start of summer and Seeger bloat
- 29:18as it is. A victory bloat is Is sacrifices
- 29:27were given for victory because of the coming rating season and
- 29:32War season, that is that was indicative in typical for the
- 29:36north population during the summer months.
- 29:39Okay. Now enhance Kringle has him,
- 29:42screaming la la Saga Helga 77. We read that in Sweden.
- 29:47There was an age-old custom. Whilst they were still Heathen
- 29:52that they that there should be a bloat and uppsala.
- 29:55During Goa moon will get into that here in a minute.
- 29:59Then they would vote for peace and victory for their King.
- 30:01People from all over Sweden were to Resort there.
- 30:06Now, it's worth noting that all of the Germanic people, all the
- 30:11dramatic heathens and Scandinavia would venerate the
- 30:14same full moon as the start of summer.
- 30:19Okay, it may be called different things, but it was the same
- 30:22thing. So like, you know, the Germanic
- 30:24pagans and Avia would call a secret bloat.
- 30:27This the anguish friesians are Frank's would call it a store.
- 30:33So EAS store is the Saxon version of that and work.
- 30:39That's where you ask where you get a star from.
- 30:43That's the, it's a Saxon thing. Okay, and it's also where the
- 30:51the Christian get their Easter. Thing from to as well.
- 30:57Alright, so there there are those three major.
- 31:02Oh, yeah. So the goal, I'm going to let me
- 31:03back up a minute. If you wondering, when we're the
- 31:06Goa moon or go a month would be that, that that's going to fall
- 31:11somewheres in the april-ish time frame, again, pending the lunar
- 31:16calendar and cigarillos was held on the full moon of the glove
- 31:23month. So that's quite often.
- 31:25Why you will see somewhere on about or around the full moon of
- 31:29April, when a lot of traumatic pagans will tend to observe
- 31:33their either es store or their secret or look.
- 31:39So that pretty much covers three major Norse, bloats how, holy
- 31:49tides, that sort of thing. Now, as we wrap up this, this,
- 31:53this section of the The podcast and wrap up this episode.
- 31:57I do want to point out that, like, I mentioned earlier, you
- 32:00know, this is all historical stuff.
- 32:02Maybe you're not trying to take this hardcore Recon approach.
- 32:06Maybe you're not trying to take this as a, you know, follow it
- 32:09by the book, you know, kind of approach.
- 32:12Maybe you're still trying to figure out where you fit in this
- 32:16grand scheme of things when it comes to Heathen, read, as a
- 32:18whole, trying to figure out which path you're trying to
- 32:20follow. Maybe you've already started
- 32:22some traditions of your own among your heart.
- 32:25Among your family among your friends that the people that you
- 32:28share and build fris with. Okay.
- 32:32So maybe you guys celebrate your, you'll a month early your,
- 32:37then the historical, you know, attestation that is
- 32:42historically, attested to in the sources.
- 32:45Maybe you do it around the, you know, the traditional Christmas
- 32:48time of year towards the end of the month.
- 32:49Maybe you do 12 nights of, you'll maybe you do, you know,
- 32:54you know, your Midsummer thing later on in the year the
- 32:58whatever it maybe maybe you call it something different but we're
- 33:03getting to at that point is individual cultic practices, but
- 33:09more than that tribal practices tribal Traditions, things that
- 33:14have become a tradition for not just you, but for your tribe and
- 33:20for your Collective and your group of people that is very
- 33:24important, that is Almost, I believe it's as its as or more
- 33:28important actually than just trying to live it up from
- 33:32historical element. Yes, there are things about the
- 33:35way it was done or when it was done that can you know, continue
- 33:42the luck that was established back then by doing so continue
- 33:47it on. But again, we are modern
- 33:49heathens and we are, we are building and we are continuing
- 33:52our own traditions. So if you have Traditions, now
- 33:57that, you know, fall out a bit outside of the historical realm,
- 34:02you shouldn't feel bad about that.
- 34:04And you shouldn't be made to feel like you're being a bad
- 34:07Heathen, or you're doing it wrong.
- 34:09Okay, really? What it comes down to it.
- 34:11That point is, is I have you found a tradition that works for
- 34:15you and your in the collective of folks that you gather with
- 34:18and, you know, exchange weird with anti weird with and are
- 34:24those Russians are those things building the luck of your of
- 34:28your tribe and and of the people in it.
- 34:32And if they are and if it is something that is beneficial
- 34:36continue to do so build on those Traditions continue that, you
- 34:40know, that that process because when you are gone and when the
- 34:46Traditions that you engage in that they won't be gone.
- 34:50They will continue to live on. This is why we have so many
- 34:53things nowadays that we From those that have gone on before
- 34:57us, those Traditions were passed down and they were handed down,
- 35:00don't be ashamed of adding your own spin on things.
- 35:04Don't be ashamed of doing it. A way that doesn't necessarily
- 35:08fit the book or the letter of the law or anything like that.
- 35:13There's no real. You no reason for you to to do
- 35:17that just for the sake of doing it, if that's what you want to
- 35:20do, if that's the path that you want to follow.
- 35:22And that's where you kind of want to build on your tree.
- 35:25Additions from then that's fine by all means continue that, you
- 35:28know, do it that way. But if you started something,
- 35:31you know, and if you have something that you've started
- 35:34and now you're learning about, you know, this part of things,
- 35:36you're going. Oh man.
- 35:37I've been doing it wrong this whole time.
- 35:38That's not what I'm getting at. And that's not what I'm trying
- 35:40to say. You continue to do you not my
- 35:43haul, not my call, Big not over here, from Middle, Tennessee,
- 35:47out to East, Texas, to Eric, sure.
- 35:49And for that wonderful phrase that you will hear on his
- 35:52YouTube channel all the time. Not my haul, not Mike.
- 35:55If it works for you, it works for your tribe, guys.
- 35:58Keep it up. Rock it.
- 36:00Okay, that is where he even really shines is when tradition
- 36:05is is cultivated from from ancient aspects and also from
- 36:11things that you're trying to, you know, nurture and grow today
- 36:18and in modern times, alright, so anyways, folks.
