- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast.
- 0:17It's also an online course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:26Our current series is Meaningful Work, Calling, Formation,
- 0:30Service, and Love.
- 0:32Do you remember back in 2009, the so
- 0:35-called miracle on the Hudson with Captain Sully?
- 0:38So this was a residential flight, took off
- 0:41from LaGuardia, New York.
- 0:43There was a bird strike, birds got caught
- 0:45in the engines, both engines died.
- 0:47And the pilot of the plane, the captain,
- 0:50he realized that they needed to land on
- 0:53the Hudson River.
- 0:54That was the only safe option.
- 0:55And so he ditched into the river, successfully,
- 0:58all 155 people aboard survived.
- 1:01They made a movie out of it called
- 1:02Sully, starring Tom Hanks, incredible story.
- 1:06This guy, Captain Sully, won all these awards,
- 1:08rightly so, and wrote a book about it
- 1:11and all sorts of things.
- 1:12Really dramatic story.
- 1:14I enjoy the Tom Hanks movie.
- 1:15Of course, I enjoy pretty much anything Tom
- 1:17Hanks does, so that may not be saying
- 1:19much.
- 1:19But what I want to actually focus on
- 1:21is what is a normal day of work
- 1:24like for Captain Sully before January 15th of
- 1:282009?
- 1:30He shows up, he follows his checklists to
- 1:33fly a plane.
- 1:35He lands, he does it again, some point
- 1:38he goes home, right?
- 1:39This was not a dramatic career, even though
- 1:42it was a career that had this very
- 1:43dramatic moment in it.
- 1:46And Captain Sully himself shares about this.
- 1:48So I want to read a quote from
- 1:49him.
- 1:50He says, one way of looking at this
- 1:52might be that for 42 years, I've been
- 1:55making small, regular deposits in this bank of
- 1:58experience, education and training.
- 2:01And on January 15th, the balance was sufficient
- 2:04so that I could make a very large
- 2:05withdrawal.
- 2:07Isn't that a great metaphor?
- 2:09His boring, regular job.
- 2:12He's just doing what he needs to do,
- 2:13getting trained, following procedures, gaining experience in small,
- 2:19undramatic ways.
- 2:21And it's like these little deposits into this
- 2:23bank account.
- 2:24And then an emergency happens and he has
- 2:27the capacity to rescue the lives of 155
- 2:30people in this very dramatic matter, having to
- 2:33move quickly with his co-pilot in a
- 2:35matter of minutes to make this situation resolve
- 2:37in the way that it did.
- 2:39Well, I think there's something here for us
- 2:43as followers of Jesus to pay attention to.
- 2:46And that's how often the practice of service
- 2:50is not especially glamorous.
- 2:52It's not especially dramatic.
- 2:54We love dramatic stories, stories of heroism, because
- 2:58they give us images.
- 2:59They give us a visual of what the
- 3:00real stakes of sacrifice and service can be.
- 3:04And so those stories are good.
- 3:05You know, the action hero movie, the reason
- 3:08that we go see it is because we
- 3:09want to see somebody rescue people who need
- 3:12rescuing.
- 3:12We want to see somebody lay their life
- 3:14on the line in order to do what's
- 3:16right and defeat the bad guys and bring
- 3:18everybody home in the end.
- 3:20But usually, usually service does not look at
- 3:23all like an action movie.
- 3:24Usually service looks like those small, daily, regular
- 3:28deposits of faithfulness.
- 3:31And there's this story in the New Testament
- 3:34of kind of a normal work day for
- 3:36a certain group of people.
- 3:38And then a dramatic moment that shows up
- 3:39that I think can show us something about
- 3:42what this daily faithfulness really does for us.
- 3:45As we press into the story, I think
- 3:47we'll see how when we do these small
- 3:51daily acts of service, it actually prepares us
- 3:54to see the miracles that God is doing
- 3:58in a way that nothing else can.
- 4:00Okay, so this comes from the ministry of
- 4:02Jesus.
- 4:03This is in the telling of John, the
- 4:06first miracle that he did at the wedding
- 4:09at Cana.
- 4:09So this is from chapter two of John.
- 4:11Let me just read the first 11 verses
- 4:12here.
- 4:14On the third day, a wedding took place
- 4:16at Cana in Galilee.
- 4:18Jesus' mother was there and Jesus and his
- 4:21disciples had also been invited to the wedding.
- 4:23When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said
- 4:25to him, they have no more wine.
- 4:29Woman, why do you involve me?
- 4:30Jesus replied, my hour has not yet come.
- 4:34His mother said to the servants, do whatever
- 4:36he tells you.
- 4:39Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind
- 4:43used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each
- 4:45holding from 20 to 30 gallons.
- 4:49Jesus said to the servants, fill the jars
- 4:51with water.
- 4:52So they filled them to the brim.
- 4:55Then he told them, now draw some out
- 4:57and take it to the master of the
- 4:58banquet.
- 4:59They did so.
- 5:01And the master of the banquet tasted the
- 5:03water that had been turned into wine.
- 5:05He did not realize where it had come
- 5:07from, though the servants who had drawn the
- 5:09water knew.
- 5:10Then he called the bridegroom aside and said,
- 5:13everyone brings out the choice wine first and
- 5:15then the cheaper wine after the guests have
- 5:17had too much to drink.
- 5:18But you have saved the best till now.
- 5:22What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee
- 5:25was the first of the signs through which
- 5:26he revealed his glory and his disciples believed
- 5:30in him.
- 5:32Okay, I want to look at this passage
- 5:34through the lens of the experience of the
- 5:37servants.
- 5:38There's so much going on in this passage,
- 5:40but think about what it's like for the
- 5:41servants.
- 5:41These servants, they don't occupy a position of
- 5:44high social status, right?
- 5:45They're low in the pecking order.
- 5:47They do probably a lot of manual and
- 5:50menial labor.
- 5:51They're part of the wedding staff today, so
- 5:54to speak.
- 5:55They're probably servants in the families of those
- 5:59who have a daughter and a son getting
- 6:01married.
- 6:03Big, important celebration.
- 6:05High stakes.
- 6:06You want things to go well.
- 6:07And the servants are there.
- 6:10And when the celebration, right, what we would
- 6:13call the wedding reception runs out of wine,
- 6:16Mary goes to Jesus and tells him about
- 6:18it.
- 6:18I love this interaction between Mary and Jesus,
- 6:20but I don't want to focus on it
- 6:21because I'm looking at the servants.
- 6:22So Mary turns to the servants and she
- 6:25says, do whatever he tells you.
- 6:28Okay, so Mary clearly has a social status,
- 6:31whatever her connection is.
- 6:32Maybe she's a relative or a friend of
- 6:33the family's where she feels like she can
- 6:35kind of command the servants.
- 6:37And so the servants, they're like, okay, we've
- 6:40just been commanded by someone with authority that
- 6:41we needed to do whatever this fellow Jesus
- 6:43says.
- 6:45And then what Jesus tells them to do
- 6:47is actually a fairly onerous task, right?
- 6:49So there's these six stone water jars.
- 6:51They're usually used for ceremonial washing.
- 6:53Jesus has other ideas for how to use
- 6:55them tonight.
- 6:56And he says to fill them up and
- 6:57they each hold 20 to 30 gallons.
- 7:00Okay, so this is a big job.
- 7:01This is going to take a while to
- 7:03fill up every single one of these six
- 7:06stone water jars until you've got however much,
- 7:08120, 180 gallons worth of water.
- 7:11So what's the servant's attitude?
- 7:13Well, we don't get their interior dialogue here,
- 7:15whether they felt chagrined about this or whether
- 7:18they find it strange that they're taking orders
- 7:20from Jesus.
- 7:21But how did they respond?
- 7:22It says they filled the jars to the
- 7:26brim.
- 7:27So they didn't just do what Jesus said.
- 7:29They really did it.
- 7:30It seems like they embraced this task.
- 7:31They were willing to do it fully without
- 7:33hesitating, without holding back.
- 7:35They fill it to the brim.
- 7:39Then Jesus tells them, okay, take some of
- 7:40the water to the master of ceremonies.
- 7:41They do so.
- 7:43And this, this detail in verse nine, I
- 7:46think is really significant.
- 7:47The master of ceremonies did not realize where
- 7:50the water that had turned into wine came
- 7:52from, though the servants who had drawn the
- 7:55water knew.
- 7:57So there's this moment, right?
- 7:59The master of ceremonies is tasting this delicious
- 8:01wine.
- 8:02He goes to the groom and says like,
- 8:03hey, look, your, your wine.
- 8:05Why'd you save the good stuff till now?
- 8:07He has no idea that a miracle has
- 8:09occurred.
- 8:09And yet, and yet the servants know.
- 8:14The servants, because they participated in the work
- 8:17that Jesus told them to do, when this
- 8:20miracle happens, they're the first ones to realize
- 8:22that it happened.
- 8:24And then the conclusion of this part of
- 8:26the narrative is that this was the first
- 8:28of the signs through which Jesus revealed his
- 8:31glory and his disciples believed in him.
- 8:34So these servants were the first ones to
- 8:38see Jesus reveal his glory through a miracle
- 8:42because they had been the ones to participate
- 8:44in what Jesus asked them to do.
- 8:47Okay, so I think there's a paradigm here
- 8:49for us.
- 8:50In our lives, sometimes we receive a call
- 8:53from Jesus.
- 8:53We spent the first chunk of this series
- 8:55on Meaningful Work talking about calling and how
- 8:58Jesus is the one who calls us.
- 9:00We have to learn to discern his voice
- 9:02from other voices.
- 9:03But when Jesus calls us to do something,
- 9:06how much data do we get from Jesus?
- 9:08And the answer is sometimes not a lot.
- 9:10In this story, Jesus doesn't sit down with
- 9:14the servants and say, okay, here's the plan.
- 9:15I'm going to turn this water into wine.
- 9:17It's going to be incredible.
- 9:18So fill it up and it'll be worth
- 9:20it.
- 9:20He doesn't do that.
- 9:21He just tells them what to do.
- 9:23He just says, fill up the water jars.
- 9:27And they do.
- 9:28Well, sometimes that's how our life with Jesus
- 9:30is too.
- 9:31Sometimes Jesus asks us to do something and
- 9:33he's not going to reveal the whole plan
- 9:35to us up front.
- 9:36He's not going to tell us what he
- 9:38intends to do.
- 9:39He's just going to tell us what he
- 9:41wants us to do.
- 9:43So what are we going to do?
- 9:44Are we going to wait till we know
- 9:46the whole plan?
- 9:47We're going to be waiting a long time.
- 9:48If so, we're going to be chagrined about
- 9:50the onerous things we're being asked to do
- 9:52that don't feel so great all the time.
- 9:54I've definitely been there, but there's an invitation
- 9:57here.
- 9:58What if we do what Jesus says?
- 10:00What if we fill up the jars to
- 10:02the brim?
- 10:04What might we see if we do that
- 10:08with Jesus and for Jesus?
- 10:11So it's like the servants kind of get
- 10:13a hint at the beginning, right?
- 10:15And the exchange between Jesus and Mary, which
- 10:17probably they overheard, or at least it seems
- 10:19like that's all happening in pretty quick sequence.
- 10:22Mary says to Jesus, they have no more
- 10:24wine.
- 10:24Then she says to the servants, do whatever
- 10:26he tells you.
- 10:27So there's this hint that the servants get
- 10:29that what they're being asked to do somehow
- 10:30has to do with the wine problem, but
- 10:32they don't get much more than that.
- 10:33They just get a hint.
- 10:34But what the culmination is they get a
- 10:37revelation of the glory of Jesus.
- 10:41I think that that's true in our lives
- 10:43too.
- 10:43When Jesus commands us to do something, often
- 10:45we get a hint.
- 10:47We just get a little hint of kind
- 10:49of the significance of what he's asking us
- 10:50to do.
- 10:51Maybe we have an idea of how our
- 10:53daily work and the job that he's asked
- 10:55us to do could contribute to the kingdom
- 10:57in some way as it provides for our
- 10:58families, or as it provides for the common
- 11:00good in our communities, or as it prepares
- 11:03and trains us for future endeavors.
- 11:04We have a hint of that, but we
- 11:06don't really have the full picture.
- 11:07But if we stick with it, eventually we
- 11:12will see that revelation of Jesus's glory in
- 11:16our work.
- 11:16We move from the hint to the revelation.
- 11:20So Jesus often tells us what to do
- 11:23before showing us what he is going to
- 11:27do.
- 11:28Jesus tells us how he wants us to
- 11:31serve before showing us what he will accomplish
- 11:35through our service.
- 11:38And yet it's only if we participate, it's
- 11:40only if we say yes, that we'll be
- 11:42there to see what God is doing, to
- 11:45see the miracle that God is performing through
- 11:48our service.
- 11:50Now, here's another way to think about the
- 11:53experience of the servants.
- 11:54When you hear this story, right, what's the
- 11:57point of the story?
- 11:59Is the point about how great the servants
- 12:01are?
- 12:02No, the point is that Jesus is revealing
- 12:04his glory.
- 12:05The point is that Jesus is bringing new
- 12:09life, new wine, the wine of salvation, eventually
- 12:12the wine of his blood on the cross.
- 12:14Jesus is giving something to the world because
- 12:17he is God's chosen one.
- 12:19He is the Messiah, and he's revealing that
- 12:20through this miracle.
- 12:22It's a sign, a sign of who he
- 12:23is and of what he's doing in the
- 12:25world, the coming of the kingdom of God.
- 12:27That's what this is about.
- 12:28It's not about the servants, but the servants
- 12:31got to be there, and the servants got
- 12:32to participate in it.
- 12:34When we think about our work, whatever our
- 12:37work is, work that God has asked us
- 12:39to do, work that's fulfilling our obedience to
- 12:41Jesus in our everyday work and our callings,
- 12:44again, multiple callings, even if it's just that
- 12:46simple calling to provide for ourselves and our
- 12:48families while we do a quote unquote secular
- 12:50job.
- 12:51If we're following Jesus in that work, if
- 12:53we're serving him in that work, who is
- 12:58the work really about?
- 12:59It's not about us.
- 13:01It's about him.
- 13:02And so that means that even when our
- 13:05work is small, even when it's unimpressive, even
- 13:08when it's not glamorous, even when it's just
- 13:10that daily faithfulness, what really matters is not
- 13:15how impressive our efforts are.
- 13:17It's that we show up because God's spirit
- 13:21will fill our efforts with his miraculous power.
- 13:26Jesus is the one who turns the water
- 13:28into wine.
- 13:29We just fill up the jars.
- 13:31And showing up every day and filling up
- 13:33that jar with daily faithfulness in your work,
- 13:36that's what makes it possible for you to
- 13:38be there, to see how God through his
- 13:41power, through his spirit will turn that water
- 13:43into wine.
- 13:45So again, it's not about how impressive it
- 13:47is.
- 13:47It's not about how dramatic it is.
- 13:48It's not even about how great you are
- 13:50and your efforts are.
- 13:51It's just about showing up, being faithful to
- 13:54Jesus, doing your part, and then waiting to
- 13:58see what God accomplishes.
- 14:01Okay, so what does that mean for us?
- 14:03How does that help us on a day
- 14:05-to-day basis?
- 14:06Well, I have a couple ideas.
- 14:08One is, and I want to actually hop
- 14:09quickly to another passage just to give a
- 14:12verse for this one, but to not despise
- 14:14the day of small things.
- 14:16So this is a little bit of a
- 14:18deep cut.
- 14:18It's from the prophet Zechariah in the era
- 14:20of rebuilding the temple.
- 14:22Rebuilding the temple took a while.
- 14:24There was some doubt about how the project
- 14:26would go.
- 14:27And part of his prophetic word is Zechariah
- 14:314 verse 10.
- 14:32Who dares despise the day of small things,
- 14:35since the seven eyes of the Lord that
- 14:37reigns throughout the earth will rejoice when they
- 14:40see the chosen capstone in the hand of
- 14:42Zerubbabel.
- 14:44Poetic language, Zerubbabel had a day job.
- 14:48He was the governor of Judah.
- 14:49He was overseeing this construction project of rebuilding
- 14:51the temple.
- 14:54And Zechariah is proclaiming, don't despise the day
- 14:57of small things.
- 14:58Who dares despise the day of small things?
- 15:00God's eyes are watching this project.
- 15:02Again, God is going to show up.
- 15:03God is going to do something glorious here
- 15:05as you just do your day-by-day
- 15:07faithfulness, even though it looks small right now.
- 15:11So that's the first thing for us is
- 15:12to not despise the day of small things,
- 15:14to not despise our own work when it
- 15:17seems unimpressive.
- 15:19If it's work that Jesus has asked you
- 15:21to do, it's worth doing faithfully.
- 15:24It doesn't matter how impressive or unimpressive, how
- 15:26big or how small it is.
- 15:30And then the second thing that we can
- 15:31do is to keep our eyes open for
- 15:34opportunities, right?
- 15:36I imagine there were several servants, right?
- 15:38And when Jesus said, hey, fill up those
- 15:40water jars, did some of the servants maybe
- 15:42hang back and say like, oh, we'll see
- 15:43who does the grunt work on that, who's
- 15:46going to heave all that extra water around.
- 15:48Have you ever done this where you kind
- 15:49of hang back and see if somebody else
- 15:50starts doing the dishes after dinner before you
- 15:52do?
- 15:52Because like, oh, maybe I'll get out of
- 15:53it because somebody else volunteered, right?
- 15:56But what if we had the opposite attitude
- 15:57of, I want to get in on this.
- 15:59I want to look for opportunities to serve
- 16:01because then I'll be there to see the
- 16:03miracle when it happens.
- 16:05So in your workplace, when there are opportunities
- 16:07to step up, to say yes, to do
- 16:09something, even if it means a little bit
- 16:12more of unglamorous behind-the-scenes effort, maybe
- 16:15you can look for those opportunities to serve.
- 16:18Maybe God will show up.
- 16:20When you say yes.
- 16:23Lord Jesus, thank you that you're the one
- 16:25who makes the difference, that you're the one
- 16:28who serves us, that you want to bring
- 16:30that new life, that new wine of your
- 16:32presence miraculously into our lives.
- 16:37So we ask that you would help us
- 16:38to show up in small everyday ways.
- 16:41Help us not to despise the day of
- 16:42small things, to be ready for what you
- 16:45will do.
- 16:47Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 16:49do our work with you.
- 16:55Thanks for listening.
