- 1:42Ladies and gentlemen, we are now speaking to the ace of
- 1:45spaders.com, baseball analyst and statistician as we all know
- 1:50him, Ryan Spader. Ryan, I I know you know this guy
- 1:54right under yourself and he, he told me he's got some great
- 1:58stories, but I want to get into some baseball with you because a
- 2:02lot of people are questioning the Yankees, All right?
- 2:05Everybody says, oh, is this all they're going to do?
- 2:08They're going to add a player that they had last year.
- 2:11I think they got a player, a great player for five years.
- 2:15I'm sorry. I said thanks for that picture.
- 2:18There you go. It makes you look young Ryan,
- 2:21but they they added a player that they had last year on their
- 2:25roster, 1 of the better left-handed power hitters in
- 2:28baseball. Last year was very good.
- 2:30You know him, you know his stats, one of the better
- 2:32left-handed hitters. Your thoughts on the Yankees
- 2:35adding him and do you think not adding anybody else could cause
- 2:39the Yankees not making the playoffs?
- 2:42I don't think you're going to keep the Yankees out of the
- 2:44playoffs. But honestly, as a Phillies fan,
- 2:49I, I was glad to see that they didn't go on full tilt after
- 2:52Beau Bichette. I mean, I'm not going to say he
- 2:57backed out of the deal, but it it seemed like they were in
- 2:59agreement. I, I blame the Phillies for that
- 3:01piece of it because why'd it take them so long?
- 3:06And then they set themselves up in a position where Tucker signs
- 3:10that ridiculous deal, no longer able to sign with the Mets or
- 3:13excuse me, no longer able to sign with the Mets.
- 3:16And then he sends a deal with the Dodgers.
- 3:19That just kind of is a new type of deal in baseball, I guess, or
- 3:23at least until next season. And so they missed out on there.
- 3:27I thought they were going to go tilt and grab Bellinger.
- 3:31I think Belger is a great player, certainly a great
- 3:33fielder. And he certainly would be an
- 3:35upgrade in terms of defense for for the Phillies.
- 3:40But he, he stays with the Yankees, his, his bat on the
- 3:44road very similar to what the Phillies got from Nick
- 3:47Castillanos. And the good thing about him is
- 3:52he's probably the, if not one, if not the, but one of the best
- 3:57hitters for Yankee Stadium in the way that that thing's set
- 4:01up. He hits great in Yankee Stadium.
- 4:03He'll continue to do so. And I think it's a move that
- 4:06they had to make. Now, I, I don't love the length
- 4:10of that deal. I'm inclined to think that they
- 4:13will have him for the duration of it.
- 4:15I, I, I didn't think Bellinger was really a great option for
- 4:20more than three years, but they had to make that move.
- 4:24And I, I think that move is one that's going to keep them in a
- 4:29postseason run. I think another thing that's
- 4:33getting downplayed a bit here with the Yankees is, I mean,
- 4:36you're acquiring Garrett Cole, so the team's going to be
- 4:40better. No, it's, it's and I knew you
- 4:43were going to bring your Phillies up.
- 4:44I knew that was that was probably.
- 4:45Right off the bat. Yeah, I I knew that was going to
- 4:48happen. I know you well enough.
- 4:51But Dave came out and said in obviously Yankees ties with the
- 4:57obviously their manager in in Henry coach and Kevin Long and
- 5:00he said that they they were good were where they're at.
- 5:03Like does he really feel that way or they just didn't make a
- 5:06move for them? To.
- 5:10Take that next step and and also too, what are they going to do
- 5:14with Nick? What are they going to casting
- 5:15hops? What are they going to do?
- 5:18So I think Dave kind of feels rug pulled and I don't know that
- 5:23for sure, but I I think that they were pretty set on signing
- 5:27Bo Bichette and trying to set up a move to either move out home
- 5:31or potentially Bryson stop, but less likely as as far as Nick
- 5:36goes, It's one of the stranger things that I've I've seen from
- 5:40Philadelphia because the dude was being loved by fans in the
- 5:44early going. And frankly, in the last two
- 5:47post seasons, he's one of the only guys who've produced.
- 5:51So it's kind of strange to see fans kind of turn their back on
- 5:56a guy who, I mean, it's, it's kind of hard to dislike a guy
- 6:01who wants to go out there, play every single day.
- 6:04He shows up with his kid at the ballpark, interacting with them,
- 6:08stuff that's great for the game people love to see.
- 6:11But I think that as far as Nick Castillanos, as a Philly goes,
- 6:18I, I think that ship has sailed. I honestly thought he was going
- 6:21to end up with the Marlins. I guess they couldn't piece
- 6:24together a deal for Nick Castillanos, for Everett
- 6:28Cabrera. Yeah, because that's where he
- 6:31lives. Yeah, and I, I, honestly, I
- 6:33thought he was going to torment the Phillies playing with the
- 6:36Marlins. And I I honestly, I wouldn't be
- 6:38surprised if he still ends up there.
- 6:41So what about the the Mets offseason that we've seen just
- 6:44basically switching players around in their lineup and they
- 6:46finally get a Freddy Peralta, They finally get a pitcher.
- 6:49Is it a good offseason? Is it bad?
- 6:50Is it something that could get David Stearns fired at this
- 6:53point? It's a very good offseason,
- 6:58especially when you consider where they started losing Pete
- 7:00Alonso. Now, in hindsight, are you like,
- 7:03you know, we just allocated all that money to Beau Michette.
- 7:06We probably could have signed our guy Pete Alonso.
- 7:09And if you look at their numbers in terms of the the metrics,
- 7:15Alonso's far and away a better offensive player.
- 7:19But as as any baseball guy, I'll tell you it's a lot easier to
- 7:22recover offense at first base than it is going to be from the
- 7:25middle of the infield or if he ends up third base.
- 7:28And I, I think that overall you're probably looking at a, a
- 7:33net, even if not a a little bit better there.
- 7:36I do think Alonso is going to be pretty good in Camden Yards,
- 7:41however. He's probably like, all right,
- 7:42why'd you guys pull the push the fences back at this point?
- 7:47And I, I think the Mets have in, I don't know, it was like a
- 7:52matter of like 50 hours completely taken over as a front
- 7:57runner right behind the Dodgers in terms of their, their
- 8:00offseason ads. Listen to this guy.
- 8:03We are talking to the the ace of spaders.com baseball analyst and
- 8:08statistician Ryan Spader. You know, I, I'm very surprised
- 8:12you went that way. You think they're the second
- 8:14best team in the National League.
- 8:16I disagree. I said second best offseason.
- 8:21Let's all. Right, All right, All right, all
- 8:24right, All right. I was about to say, I mean, I'm
- 8:28a you know, I'm kind of like stunned that you went you went
- 8:31that way. But you know, you look at the
- 8:33offseason and and obviously there are a lot of teams that
- 8:36didn't really pull the trigger. And Boston made a couple of
- 8:39moves, the Blue Jays made a couple of moves.
- 8:43And in the IT, and everybody knows the American League East
- 8:46is always the best division in baseball.
- 8:48It always is. Usually every single year it is.
- 8:51And the Yankees, which are always the one that goes out
- 8:54there and, and, and, and spends the money.
- 8:57Everybody's complaining. The Yankees aren't doing this.
- 8:59They're not doing that. And, and the Yankees, maybe
- 9:01they're trying to be cheap. Al Steinberg came out a couple
- 9:04of weeks after the season and attacked the Dodgers when it
- 9:08came to the deferred money. And he says they're ruining
- 9:10baseball. And then everybody was attacking
- 9:12the Yankees because the Yankees quote on quote bought their
- 9:14championships, which was untrue. Now, what do you think?
- 9:18I mean, do you think that baseball after the after this
- 9:22season, do you think the baseball is going to go on a
- 9:25heavy long strike because of the Dodgers and what the Dodgers
- 9:29have done over the last couple of years?
- 9:32I've got a couple feelings about this and some of it's just like
- 9:34stuff I've heard in the in the rumor mill.
- 9:38There's a few conspiracy theories out there that opposing
- 9:43general managers are just letting this happen.
- 9:46And it wouldn't be the GMs really so much as the owners
- 9:49that they're letting something like this happen where it almost
- 9:53forces MLBS hand in terms of a a salary cap.
- 9:57Which of course as an owner is better for you in the long run.
- 10:02But I, I don't think that baseball is a sport that can
- 10:08successfully implement a, a salary cap because what you're
- 10:11going to end up with is teams that are going to have, I don't
- 10:15know, 3-4 highly or high, high paid players.
- 10:20And then you're going to end up with a bunch of guys who are in
- 10:23the, what is it, Joe at the, the first, what, five years of their
- 10:29contract or something? One of those guys.
- 10:32Before arbitration. Yeah, and a lot of those guys
- 10:35who who can produce at a big league level at a quote, UN
- 10:39quote, zero to two WAR level, who, you know, never get through
- 10:45arbitration, never make a big league squad again after that
- 10:49because it's seen as well, this guy's not worth 678, nine, $10
- 10:54million a year. But you know, we would take him
- 10:57for less than that. And that's going to cause a
- 11:00whole different problem in baseball.
- 11:03If we're getting back to that position where I mean, you see
- 11:07it in the NFLA lot where you you're getting specific guys who
- 11:12are making essentially all the money and then everybody else
- 11:15who's playing league minimum or slightly above, it's it's it, it
- 11:21would be a mess. As so, so you're saying, so
- 11:23you're saying it's going to be a long strike.
- 11:25That's what you're. Saying so.
- 11:26So no, Ryan, would you say like a cap, like obviously I don't
- 11:30think it's going to happen, but like, 'cause you can have a
- 11:34salary floor too, Like do you think that would be more in in
- 11:38space for what baseball in the direction that they're going?
- 11:43So I think a salary floor is a wonderful idea.
- 11:47Do I ever see it getting implemented only if there's also
- 11:52a hard cap. I, I don't know, I, there's a,
- 11:57there's a guy I'm going to have to set you up with at some point
- 12:00to talk the actual money in terms of this, his name is Rob
- 12:03Rayola. He's a New York guy, sports tax
- 12:06man on Twitter and he knows all of the insurance and outs in
- 12:09terms of, in terms of the way that contracts are hitting
- 12:13payroll and stuff like that. He's my default guy for that.
- 12:17But I, I don't know how like, all right, Tucker's making
- 12:21$1,000,000 salary this year. No, he's not.
- 12:24I don't know how they would game that in terms of a hard cap
- 12:30getting around it. The best idea, ironically, I've
- 12:35ever heard is from Nick Castillanos, who said, hey, you
- 12:40know what? We should have a relegation.
- 12:42Go with the go figure the the Europeans have the most
- 12:47capitalist sports system in probably the world where if you
- 12:52don't produce, you get sent essentially to the minors.
- 12:55And Castianos was like, you know what?
- 12:57I'd love to see that in baseball where, you know, if teams aren't
- 13:00competing, you finish last two years in a row or something,
- 13:03then you're sent down and another team's given a chance.
- 13:06I think that would be pretty cool, but that would probably
- 13:09cause some serious issues with guys who are perennial big
- 13:14leaguers on those types of teams.
- 13:17The guys who, who we see on those cellar dwellers.
- 13:21Although I mean, I, I, I can't really off the top my head think
- 13:25of anybody on the Rockies who was a stand out All Star,
- 13:30Anybody last year who, who was on the White Sox who's, you
- 13:34know, a stand out All Star. And then you get guys like me
- 13:37who would have a fit over the the stats and the way that those
- 13:40are impacted in terms of the the potential strike we're looking
- 13:45at. I don't think Major League
- 13:48Baseball wants to try to recover from another 60 game season.
- 13:52So I hope that they can arrive at something.
- 13:55And if they do arrive at something in terms of a shorter
- 13:59season I I wouldn't at all be surprised if that's what they
- 14:04end up going with going forward, be it 154 games or something.
- 14:08I never thought Major League Baseball would be a sport to cut
- 14:11games, but I, I'm sure they would find a way to get that
- 14:14revenue back with some stupid NBA style mid season tournament
- 14:18or something like that, which I, I personally don't see any value
- 14:25in. Maybe they do something like
- 14:27they do with the 1981 season, which is absolutely ridiculous
- 14:31where you know, you got a first half winner and a second-half
- 14:34winner. I think in the end what we're
- 14:36going to see is something very similar to a post season system
- 14:43that we saw in in 2020 where it's essentially like NBA style.
- 14:49More than half the teams are making it or half if you go to
- 14:5132 and you're going to see a longer post season.
- 14:56That I'm not necessarily against that, but I, I also don't want
- 15:01to see, you know, shortened season or anything like that.
- 15:04You'll see some sub 500 teams in the playoffs, they said.
- 15:07It's eight teams that's the problem.
- 15:08With the NBA. A lot of the time, especially in
- 15:10the East, so you had like 60s at 39 and 43 or something like
- 15:14that. They're going to be equivalent
- 15:15of that. I wanted to bring up something
- 15:17that mentioned with expansion. One of the other stories was the
- 15:20geographic realignment, the division realignment, which I
- 15:23thought was a kind of a strange concept, but maybe it could help
- 15:26travel circumstances. Would that only come with
- 15:28expansion? Would that only come with like a
- 15:30potential like a revenue boost in that way?
- 15:32Because a lot of the obviously the local TV networks are
- 15:34falling apart. You know, I, I really wish I
- 15:37knew we would go here because I, I, I wrote something on that
- 15:40night. I don't have it handy.
- 15:43You know, you keep telling people to go to my site and
- 15:45they're probably going to it and seeing that, that it's under
- 15:48construction because I'm, I'm doing a revamp this offseason,
- 15:51which that's why I didn't do the, the ballot this year.
- 15:55So don't worry, don't worry, you'll get it.
- 15:57You'll get it back next. Year I was just going to say I
- 15:59didn't get annoyed with all like hey did you put your.
- 16:05But that'll be back next year. But the alignment thing is very
- 16:11interesting because if you do look at the in terms of travel,
- 16:17it is there's no other way to say it.
- 16:19I mean, it's unfair to certain teams and certain players and
- 16:22the way it affects certain players versus, you know,
- 16:26younger guys traveling is not the easiest thing in the world.
- 16:29I always thought that I was invincible.
- 16:30And then when I hit 27, I was like, and I mind you, I was in
- 16:34the Marine Corps at that point. I hit 27.
- 16:36I was like, why do I feel like a headache and tired after having
- 16:4219 beers last night? This is not normal.
- 16:45Something must be wrong with me. So, you know, you get these guys
- 16:49who have, Philly's a great example, Yankees as well now,
- 16:54who have a bunch of superstars who are older.
- 16:57I mean, if you put one of those teams in Seattle who has all
- 17:01that travel year after year, they probably have a pretty hard
- 17:05time going coast to coast and traveling.
- 17:09What I what is it like twice as much as any other team?
- 17:12It's yeah, they're pretty. Rough.
- 17:13Your shortest flight is 2 and. 1/2 hours.
- 17:16That's, that's brutal. And I, I think that one of the
- 17:20things that I drew up and I'll send to you guys after the fact
- 17:23so I can actually come through and pull up is a realignment
- 17:27that functions well with 32 teams where basically
- 17:32everybody's getting a more even distribution of travel.
- 17:37Ryan, where would you add those two teams because we've had this
- 17:40conversation too. Man, I think 1 you got to go.
- 17:47I can't remember where the heck I put Montreal.
- 17:48Montreal. That's where I.
- 17:50No see, Montreal doesn't play though.
- 17:53It doesn't work. The northeast is already too
- 17:55loaded. I think I had one go in.
- 18:00Nashville. I want to say I had one in,
- 18:03yeah, Nashville, and then I had one on the West Coast.
- 18:06I can't remember exactly how I drew it up, but it wasn't Vegas
- 18:10because, you know, I just assumed that athletics were
- 18:13going to end up there and sure enough, that's where they're
- 18:15going to end up. Just letting my ADD brain take
- 18:19over. It is hilarious that the
- 18:20athletics can't get a trademark for anything in life.
- 18:24They tried two of them and they got turned on for both of them.
- 18:26That's great. They're going to be end up name
- 18:29something else. That's ridiculous.
- 18:34Honestly, what they did to that fan base is, is ridiculous, but
- 18:36that's a whole mother conversation.
- 18:39So I, I do think the future of baseball does have something in
- 18:45store in terms of additional teams, less travel for teams
- 18:49throughout the season where you're doing most of your travel
- 18:51all at once and you're hanging out in an area for for a long
- 18:54time. Or, or, you know, we end up with
- 18:57that situation that I talked about with the stupid mid season
- 19:01tournament or something like that where everybody's housed
- 19:04like it's the Little League World Series or something like
- 19:08that, which I, I really, I really can't put stock into.
- 19:15I I don't understand like a what would you even, would you even
- 19:19get like a ring? A partial champion?
- 19:21What the I don't even understand what you'd possibly call it.
- 19:25They'd probably try to do something with like rivalries or
- 19:28something like that. But I don't know how you can
- 19:30even do something like that because I mean, yeah, you got
- 19:34the Yankees and and you got the Yankees and the Red Sox and the
- 19:39Dodgers and the Giants. But then.
- 19:41How about a Long Island baseball team?
- 19:43What about that I mean? Too much in the Northeast.
- 19:46We're just we're spoiled as it is.
- 19:49Listen, Ryan, I'm just trying to give people a thought in their
- 19:53mind. Hey, Long Island baseball team.
- 19:55We got a lot of land over here. We have the Long Island ducks.
- 19:59Oh, stop. That's goody special fish.
- 20:01Oh. My God, we should call them the
- 20:04Long Island junks because that's what they are.
- 20:07Anyways, we are talking to the ace of spader.com, baseball
- 20:11analyst and Stat edition, Ryan Spader.
- 20:14All right, Ryan, Hall of Fame you have obviously Andrew Jones
- 20:20and you have Carlos Beltran, 2 guys that actually deserved to
- 20:24go to the Hall of Fame a long time ago.
- 20:26Andrew Jones, ten time Gold Glove winner, probably the
- 20:29greatest center fielder, him and Torial Tori Hunter, That's right
- 20:35from the Twins when I when I watched those two guys really
- 20:38stuck out to me the most when it came to center fields and Bernie
- 20:41Williams. I'm not going to take that away
- 20:43either. And obviously Carlos Beltran,
- 20:47who is one of the best playoff hitters I've ever seen.
- 20:49When he was hitting in the with the Astros and then when he went
- 20:53to the Mets, even with Kansas City, he was a great player.
- 20:56This guy was an all around, you know, as far as stats are
- 20:59concerned, as great of a player we've seen in a long time.
- 21:02But Andy, Andy Pettitte still on the list, Alex Rodriguez, two
- 21:06guys that there's a lot of questions because of the HGH and
- 21:10steroids. Felix Chase Utley, I know you
- 21:14know a lot about him. Tell us a little bit about your
- 21:17thoughts with the two guys that got into the Hall of Fame and
- 21:20the other guys that are trailing right behind them.
- 21:22Well, to me, Andrew Jones, I really don't understand what
- 21:26the, what the hang up was on him.
- 21:31You know, when I, when I, when I talked to him initially about
- 21:33like it's Hall of Fame case. I, I think it was like 6 years
- 21:36ago now, the whole idea of it for me was like, yeah, you were
- 21:42supposed to be Willie Mays, but who, who the hell is Willie
- 21:46Mays? And like, and I don't say that
- 21:48to knock Willie Mays. I say it to like, who could
- 21:52possibly do what Willie Mays did?
- 21:54And to me it's it's it's no crime, not really not being
- 21:58Willie Mays and to to still end up hitting 434 home runs and and
- 22:05winning 10 Gold Gloves. And then even looking at today's
- 22:10advanced metrics, the ones that say, hey, maybe Jimmy Edmonds
- 22:13wasn't quite as good defensively as he appeared to be simply
- 22:17because of the fact that, you know, he was, he was making
- 22:21great plays on balls that got a guy like Andrew Jones, a guy
- 22:24like Tori Hunter would be probably camped under.
- 22:28And it's not to knock Jimmy Edmonds because he was a great
- 22:30ball player and I'd put him in the Hall of Fame.
- 22:33But I'm a big Hall Hall guy. Andrew Jones absolutely had no
- 22:38business being on what is 8th, 9th ballot should have been in a
- 22:41long time ago. I don't think Carlos Beltran
- 22:43should have taken this long. But you know, the Astros quote
- 22:46UN quote scandal held him back and then him getting fired from
- 22:50the Mets before he even started didn't really help the
- 22:54situation. I think you guys all know my
- 22:56feelings on the, the cheating scandal and everything and the,
- 23:00the legal issues that I dealt with in terms of sharing some of
- 23:05the players thoughts that were passed to me.
- 23:10If it's a, it's a situation where I think it's just another
- 23:17generation of that's, that's what the cheating is now, right?
- 23:22It's the you got the steroid era that came before it and I'm, I'm
- 23:28not ashamed to say I took steroids and I hit zero home
- 23:31runs. We talked about this.
- 23:32We talked about. You know, didn't do anything for
- 23:35me. Improved my my bench press Max
- 23:40and I think that was it, nothing else.
- 23:42What were you bench pressing? What were you?
- 23:45Bench pressing, actually the best I ever did, and that's what
- 23:47anybody who took steroids will tell you, was 435 lbs cleaning.
- 23:52That's pretty good. I was.
- 23:54I was a national champion powerlifter at Penn State.
- 23:56My man. Really.
- 23:58That's right. You never told me that.
- 24:00Like crappy valley, crappy valley, You got it right.
- 24:05I could call in another valley, but that's a whole nother story.
- 24:10Oh yeah, right. I want to get on.
- 24:14The fact is I've gotten to know you over the years and
- 24:20obviously, first and foremost, you served our country, which
- 24:23grateful and thankful for that. So appreciate you on that.
- 24:27What in the hell made you get into this world of analytics?
- 24:31Because you have been a controversy many times over and
- 24:35I love it. I I love that it, it, it, it
- 24:38excites me when I see stuff and people going back and forth at
- 24:42you for, for your takes. Like what made you like want to
- 24:46be that guy that that pushes the envelope because obviously you
- 24:52did it in your career and now in your next career, you're doing
- 24:55it again. And I think it's fascinating to
- 24:58me. Dave, I will tell you the this
- 25:04is one of my favorite stories to tell and I'm going to try to
- 25:06chop it up real quick is when I was a junior at Penn State and I
- 25:13was trying out for the club baseball team, which I, I
- 25:17realize like club whatever, but Penn State's club baseball team
- 25:21as his most D1 club baseball teams are, are pretty good.
- 25:25And I ended up getting cut from their club baseball team.
- 25:27And I'm like 20 years old and I'm like, I'm probably not going
- 25:30to make the big leagues. Took me that long to realize.
- 25:34And I'm like, I got, I got to find another way into this.
- 25:36I got to keep baseball part of my life in some way.
- 25:39I, I just, I love this game so much.
- 25:42And I had a professor there in one of my econometrics, which is
- 25:47stats and probability focus, who was always using baseball stuff
- 25:52in his problems. And I was so good at this stuff.
- 25:54And I'm like, damn, man, this is my way.
- 25:56I can, I can do it by the numbers.
- 25:57I can do baseball by the numbers with the best of them.
- 25:59I mean, when I was growing up, I collected baseball cards, but I
- 26:03was more concerned about the fact that Jose Canseco's 1999
- 26:06tops traded card had all kinds of errors on the back of it.
- 26:10You know, I was moving to the back of the cards in the front.
- 26:13So I started toying with some stats stuff and I think it was a
- 26:182010, excuse me, 2012. Cliff Lee went 6:00 and 9:00 for
- 26:25the Phillies and Philly, as they are want to do, losing their
- 26:29mind on the radio. Everybody's calling in.
- 26:31Cliff Lee's done his, his career's over.
- 26:34He went 6:00 and 9:00. But if you looked at his
- 26:36numbers, he was Cliff Lee as usual.
- 26:39And that season he was the first pitcher since Cy Young in 19 O 5
- 26:43to have at least 200 strikeouts and fewer than thirty walks in
- 26:47the season. And I was like, oh, that's a
- 26:48cool piece of information. Me call into WIP Philly radio
- 26:52station and tell them all about this.
- 26:54And every single time I'd call in and start talking numbers,
- 26:58they'd hang up on you because they don't want some schmuck
- 27:02caller talking numbers. And the, the great irony in this
- 27:06is that I later ended up doing a weekly numbers segment on that
- 27:12same radio station for that same guy who I, I was trying to call
- 27:16in and would hang up. Now I, I guess it kind of helped
- 27:21that I at that point had a, had a stat book and everything and
- 27:25started getting some recognition, a couple writing
- 27:28gigs for the work that I was doing and I wasn't calling into
- 27:33his show as Doctor Burrell, who had a APHD as in a professional
- 27:39hitting degree and a master's degree in fornication.
- 27:43What? You sure it wasn't because you
- 27:45were a schmuck? Because no, it was a little bit
- 27:48of, I think everybody is a bunch of schmucks.
- 27:53So, so, yeah, I kind of just took that road.
- 27:56And the thing that benefited me more than anything throughout
- 28:01all of this is and, and I tell this because I still get not
- 28:05quite as much as I used to, but I still get kids in college,
- 28:08they'll reach out to me, Hey, how do I, how do I get a job in
- 28:11baseball to set? And the other thing, I don't
- 28:14have a job in baseball. I do my own thing.
- 28:16I've never needed baseball to put food on my table,
- 28:20fortunately. And what that's enabled me to do
- 28:24is things like calling it like I see it, I don't, I've never bent
- 28:29the knee. The one time I did bend the knee
- 28:31was when I got scared shitless by, you know, the lawyers after
- 28:36came out with some of the things that players told me.
- 28:39And I'm not saying who those lawyers were, but I fortunately
- 28:43ended up getting my own. And I realized, well, I didn't
- 28:45do anything wrong. And I probably shouldn't have
- 28:48published that apology, you know, back at the time when
- 28:50apologies were the thing and they were always written by some
- 28:53publish this. So that was probably the biggest
- 28:56mistake, I would say. If I go back, if I went back in
- 29:00time, would I have been a little less controversial?
- 29:09Probably no. But would I have kind of watched
- 29:15what I said a little bit maybe because maybe I'd be doing
- 29:19something a little bit different in terms of my connection to
- 29:22baseball. But at the end of the day, man,
- 29:25it's the same thing. I've told every single guy and
- 29:28I've probably told you at some point that I've run into I'm a
- 29:31ball player, I just happen to suck and I like chopping it up
- 29:34with ball players. I like baseball being a part of
- 29:37my life and unfortunately for me.
- 29:39At one point you like to shoot it in your ass, you know I'll.
- 29:45Do that before his wrestling match with Rob.
- 29:46Manford I will tell you this though, and one of the could I
- 29:53be the referee? Could I be the referee?
- 29:56No, we were giving you the job of the the celebrity
- 29:59broadcaster. That's what I said.
- 30:01I I'd put Spader against Rob Manfred and a referee.
- 30:05I'd be the referee, I'd take the cherry, beat Rob Manfred on the
- 30:08back of the head with it. I'd be the one trying to double
- 30:12team on him. Hey, to quote to great tug
- 30:16McGraw, who was a reserve Marine, right, He said when he
- 30:22left for boot camp and came back, he said they said how was
- 30:25boot camp and he said, well, I'm trained killer now so.
- 30:30I want to, I want, I want to segue into that like, how is
- 30:34your mentality like? And I and I think when you are
- 30:39authentically you and that's we've had this conversation of
- 30:44like, I'm like, we've had the MLB conversation.
- 30:47He's like, I'm not going to get there because I am who I am.
- 30:51Do you think that translated from the Marine Corps to to what
- 30:57you are? Because you authentically have
- 30:59to be you and you're not going to change who you are.
- 31:02And that's why you've created what you've created.
- 31:07No, man, I, I kind of think it goes into play with how I was
- 31:11raised, right? What might I become a Marine?
- 31:13Well, probably the same reasons I was 25 years old and a senior
- 31:16hedge fund account manager. That's a, it's a pretty decent
- 31:20job for somebody who is that age.
- 31:22And I, I'm not saying this to be boastful or anything like I, I,
- 31:27I work, I work hard. I like any job that I do and
- 31:31whether it's throughout my life, whether it's digging ditches,
- 31:36which I've done, whether it's making cheese steaks, which I've
- 31:39done, delivering papers, which I did when I was like 8 years old.
- 31:43I always worked hard and I wanted to be either, I don't
- 31:48know, recognize for my good work at a younger age, but then be
- 31:52represented by my work now that I'm older.
- 31:55I always invest in myself all the way.
- 31:58And you know, when I was doing the job in, in finance and I was
- 32:02like, you know what, this this isn't for me.
- 32:04I always said I was going to be a Marine.
- 32:06So I got to I got to do what I said I was going to be and ended
- 32:10up leaving. That took a pretty steep pay
- 32:13cut, as you could imagine, going from a senior hedge fund account
- 32:17manager to private first class because I decided to enlist
- 32:22since it would be faster to get in instead of going the officer
- 32:25out. So there's a pretty steep pay
- 32:27cut, massive life change. But it, you know, I, I did what
- 32:31I said I was going to do. And another thing that I've
- 32:35always said I'm, I'm going to do is I'm, I'm just going to be
- 32:38who, who I believe I am and who I'm going to do what I think is
- 32:41right. Sometimes that means speaking
- 32:43out against something. Sometimes it means going against
- 32:49what everybody else is saying or what is popular to be said.
- 32:53And, and that, that kind of reflects in baseball.
- 32:56It caused me issues when I'm, when technically I, I qualified
- 33:00for BBWA, but they're making up rules out of their ass to
- 33:04prevent me from, from getting in And something that I have that
- 33:09I'm, I'm proud of and that I have over.
- 33:12I, I don't think there's a single member of BBWA who has
- 33:17five different guys who have been inducted into the Hall of
- 33:20Fame who have thanked them for helping, helping them along the
- 33:25way and helping other people open up to their case.
- 33:29But, but I do and I'm, I'm pretty happy with that.
- 33:33I don't. Need You're about to make me
- 33:35start to cry, man. You're, you're making me cry.
- 33:38You, you turned out to be a guy that I like to yell with and go
- 33:42back and forth with to a guy, a kind soul.
- 33:45This guy helps baseball players. He helps everybody statics.
- 33:49So you're this guy? He's the best.
- 33:53Java, I think it was. I think it was the second time
- 33:55we had riot. We had a riot on the show.
- 33:57He literally went on about a 10 minute vendetta with about the
- 34:01BBWA. Treaty Yes, he did.
- 34:03And we went back and forth plenty of times, me and him, and
- 34:07I mean with his Phillies and my Yankees and going back and forth
- 34:11in 2009 when he said that the Phillies got robbed, as I
- 34:15remember the argument with him. But you're an interesting cat
- 34:19man, you always were. And I the one thing I could say
- 34:22about me that I can kind of compare to you and is that I
- 34:26say, I tell it how it is. I don't really care what anybody
- 34:28thinks. And if baseball wants to hold it
- 34:31back because of it, then so be it.
- 34:34I am not a big fan of any commissioner in professional
- 34:37sports, but I have respect for what they do and how they do it.
- 34:41I'm just not. Obviously it's been apparent on
- 34:45this show that Rob Manfred is one of the dumbest people in
- 34:48professional sports and I've attacked him on this show plenty
- 34:51of times. Jabba sometimes doesn't want to
- 34:53stand behind it because it's, you know, Jabba still works with
- 34:57the players union. But I stand behind it because
- 35:00I'm I'm real and I don't want anybody to think that I'm fake
- 35:03and I'm trying to kiss somebody's ass ass to get
- 35:06somewhere. I want to get somewhere because
- 35:08I they can see the talent, they see the work, they see the
- 35:12passion and they know that we're the way we work and the way we
- 35:15passionately bring it to the forefront.
- 35:18People will fall in love with it.
- 35:19So I say the same thing about you, your stats, everything
- 35:23about you. I respect.
- 35:25That's why people follow you. That's why people listen to you
- 35:27when it comes to stats, and that's why I love getting you on
- 35:30the show and we really appreciate you joining us.
- 35:33Dude, I, I anytime you need a third I, I love doing this
- 35:37stuff. I love talking to you guys.
- 35:40Having Java here is just a added bonus because him and I chop it
- 35:44up all the time here. First of all, I don't I don't
- 35:48get the snaps anymore of send one share one like what the
- 35:51hell. I got oh.
- 35:55Man, yeah, with the gifts and all that stuff, I've got it.
- 36:02I will. Say before I let you go, why?
- 36:06Why you are so respected from our community is because you are
- 36:12authentically yourself. And your mission is like, I'm
- 36:16just going to give what it is. And I'm going to tell you it
- 36:18like, I don't think you are Hall of Famer, but if I think you
- 36:22are, I'm going to show you why you are.
- 36:24And that's why Scott Rowland did what he did.
- 36:26I appreciate. Whatever the guys did, what they
- 36:29did, and I will say it from somebody that was fortunate
- 36:32enough to play the game and fortunate enough to know you,
- 36:36he's not going to lick my butt. But the way that you project
- 36:45yourself in a way that we don't get to see a lot where you're
- 36:52essentially protecting us because of the work we did and
- 36:56how. And like you told me, it's like
- 36:59when you started on five days, this was your ERA.
- 37:02And I'm like, holy shit, like what if I would have had that
- 37:05when I was going to arbitration? Like these are things that we
- 37:09didn't have. And like you just are so
- 37:12authentically open to so many things where you take on it all,
- 37:17but you do it so strategically and smart where it's like, Hey,
- 37:23I'm just going to tell you the way it is.
- 37:25So you don't like you don't like it, but I'm here to be a caveat
- 37:29to to help you do that. I can't say thank you enough and
- 37:32I I do appreciate that. And nothing for me is more
- 37:36enjoyable as somebody because I still I, I will say it over and
- 37:40over again. I'll say it when I'm 80 years
- 37:41old. I'm a ball player.
- 37:43I just happen to suck every single time I've spoken to AI,
- 37:47don't know a potential Hall of Famer or a a guy who couldn't.
- 37:52The team couldn't figure out if he's a starter reliever, how
- 37:55they're going to manipulate him into a lesser contract.
- 38:00Whatever. I, anytime I've ever talked to
- 38:04one of these guys, Tim Raines, one sticks out.
- 38:06He's like, you know, I, I start talking to Tim Raines, he's
- 38:09like, yes, Sir, this, Sir that's and I'm like rock dude.
- 38:13I'm a, I'm a ball player, man. I'm not going to write anything
- 38:16you don't want when we, when we do something together.
- 38:19And it's one of the things that led me astray from, from writing
- 38:23for publications is because I would always share my stuff
- 38:27before I sent it to the editor. And I'd be like, hey, you cool
- 38:31with how I said this? You cool?
- 38:33Edgar Martinez, you know, he's been in the US for a long time,
- 38:36but he's still a little bit self-conscious about his English
- 38:39and doesn't like the way he says certain things.
- 38:41So I'd let him read what I write when he's involved in the piece.
- 38:45And that's apparently frowned upon, but that's the way I do
- 38:48business. And I don't want people ever to
- 38:51feel like they got to watch what they say around me or think that
- 38:55they're going to end up on a some sort of blast or some sort
- 39:00of video because they were out having having beers and a little
- 39:03bit loose in the lips saying certain things around me.
- 39:07That's it's just not who I am. I don't do that.
- 39:09I ever intend to be. I don't do that either, and what
- 39:12I do is I just attack everybody the way I think and I don't
- 39:15need. To tell you.
- 39:16I don't need to use any interview to attack somebody
- 39:19except Quinton Jammer, that's the only one.
- 39:22That's the only SOBI like to jam something in, but that's it.
- 39:27Anyways, we love you man. Keep up the good work and we'll
- 39:31talk to you soon. All right, guys, be good.
- 39:34Don't forget to send one share 1 Dick.
- 39:37As long as he's using dude wipes and taking care of my 2 hole I'm
- 39:40good. There he is.
- 39:41Ryan Bader, ladies and gentlemen, if you heard his so
- 39:46his, I, I guess his website is down right now and when it gets
- 39:50up, I, he has a great website. He's one of the best
- 39:53statisticians in the business right now and he's really,
- 39:57really honest with his numbers and he really gets deep into his
- 40:01numbers. So I, and like he said, he's,
- 40:04he's very good with it. So I, I'm interested.
- 40:07I didn't even know he was a, a lifter and I didn't know that
- 40:10he, he was benching over 400 lbs.
- 40:12So pretty, pretty impressive for a guy his size anyways.
- 40:16Ladies and gentlemen, we've got save your tears.
- 40:20Mom, what's one thing? That you can't talk to me about.
- 40:24My sexual fantasies. No.
- 40:27No, say your sorry. It is not ideal, but if it's
- 40:30what means it is not ideal, but if it is not ideal, but if it
- 40:33is, what means? You can't dribble stamp a double
- 40:35stamp, you can't dribble stamp a double stamp Lloyd.
- 40:37You can't dribble stamp a double.
- 40:38Stamp. Lloyd, you guys now?
- 40:43It's time for save your tears. Another Tojo.
- 40:48Right, welcome back. To Save Your Tears, we're going
- 40:53to do the Championship Week $15. I guess this is the last one of
- 40:59the year, Errol. We can't really do it with one
- 41:01game. So here is the finale of Save
- 41:05Your Tears. All right, here we go.
- 41:08Let's bring up the full board. Did I save your sex part again?
- 41:14This is the part of the show where I remind you, if you are
- 41:17not catching us in video, we are available in video on both Apple
- 41:22and Spotify. We have separate for that.
- 41:24So come check out and subscribe to both of our audio and video
- 41:27feeds. And we have not done so yet.
- 41:30Also, we're obviously streaming live on YouTube.
- 41:32We're streaming live on TikTok, Instagram, every social that you
- 41:36could find us, we're there. Make sure you're subscribing
- 41:39when you're there and tell a friend subscribe.
- 41:42All right, so at quarterback, obviously, we're picking both
- 41:46games. We got Matthew Stafford the $5
- 41:49player, Drake May at 4, Sam Darnold at 3 and Jared Stidham
- 41:55for two and a dollar. I guess you could take a flyer.
- 41:58And if Nathan's going to play, I don't see Nathan in the
- 42:01backstage, right? Now.
- 42:03Maybe Nathan would spend it on anybody else.
- 42:05I don't think anyone's going to spend a dollar on mystery
- 42:07quarterback. That might play, I guess.
- 42:10If Stidham craps the bed, $5 for running back is going to go to
- 42:14Karen Williams, followed by Kenneth Walker.
- 42:16The third room, Andre Stevenson at 3, RJ Harvey at 2, and I'm
- 42:22putting Trayvion Henderson as the dollar wild card receiver.
- 42:28Receiver number one, it's Puka Nakua for 5, Courtland Sutton
- 42:32for four, Stefan Diggs for three, Cooper Cup for two and
- 42:36Pop Douglas for a Buck Droba. Wydonnava. #2 JSN headlines it
- 42:45for $5, followed by Adams Kay, Sean Bodie for three, Marvin
- 42:51Mims junior. For two.
- 42:53Speedy, you said Pat Bryant's probably not going to play.
- 42:55I guess I will then make that dollar player.
- 42:58Hoops get so pooch. The next receiver who gets the
- 43:03most I guess targets in that game sounds fair to me.
- 43:07I love Lisa AM. And then at tight end Colby
- 43:11Parkinson. Suck my indoor.
- 43:14Last round, he's the $5 player at tight end, followed by Hunter
- 43:18Henry Stone hands himself from the Giants days, Evan Ingram for
- 43:22three, AJ Barner for two and Terrence Ferguson for a dollar.
- 43:29Again, I'm anal. All right, so was Mr. Speedy,
- 43:34who did win last week. Speedy, what's the order
- 43:36tonight? We're going to start with you
- 43:38this week. Oh well, very convenient.
- 43:41I already have mine done. I'm going all Patriots all the
- 43:46time and a couple other guys here.
- 43:48Drake May at quarterback. Stick a finger in his ass.
- 43:58And fish might have frozen. On Kenneth, Kenneth Walker to
- 44:013rd, because Kenneth Walker to 3rd doesn't have to deal with
- 44:04Mr. Chardonnay anymore and that leaves me with a dollar.
- 44:08I'll spend it on Ferguson. So I got May Walker the third
- 44:12digs booty and Ferguson. Who's next?
- 44:15Speedy. Tony.
- 44:17OK, I was really looking at it. Give me Matthew Stafford.
- 44:21Give. Me Do you know a rooster as a
- 44:23cock? Kenneth Walker.
- 44:27You got to put your tongue on something.
- 44:29Give. ME Cooper Cup and then yeah,
- 44:37give me Mims and then Barner. All right.
- 44:41Go check your lug nuts. Oh God.
- 44:45I've got Stafford. Get his hand off the board,
- 44:49please. Wait Fish.
- 44:51I'm sorry I lied. This.
- 44:52Is what we're. Going to do.
- 44:53We're going to instead of Mims, we're going to go.
- 44:57Booty and then I should have an extra.
- 44:59Dollar So I should go Ferguson? So instead of Mims, switch that
- 45:02around. Just Mims instead of yeah, we're
- 45:04going to do booty in Ferguson instead.
- 45:06All right, so Stafford Walker Cup booty in Ferguson?
- 45:10Yes, that's all right. Who's next, Speedy?
- 45:14Jabba. I'm going to go Matthew Stafford
- 45:18because same rehab guy that my son works with that worked with
- 45:24Stafford at Georgia. Nice.
- 45:26Goodbye. Then I'm going to go from Andre
- 45:32Stevenson, I'm at 8. Then I'm going to go Portland
- 45:38Sutton, which puts me at. 12 that means.
- 45:43You can't go with the booty this week, Java.
- 45:44I know you right? Never mind.
- 45:48Never. Mind.
- 45:49Sorry, no. I'm going to go digs and booty.
- 45:55Beneficial. And then Ferguson.
- 46:00Dissect. All right, Similar to what I I
- 46:02did over there with digs and booty.
- 46:05That's what they say in New England.
- 46:06They digs the booty, Ferguson, Stevenson and Stafford.
- 46:12Who's next? All right, I'll go next with my
- 46:1518. So Stafford, Stafford and Puka,
- 46:19you're a cheater. Stafford and Puka, give me, give
- 46:22me Devante Adams. That gives me that gives me 14.
- 46:26Give me Harvey and Barner with a family member.
- 46:33Either. All right, I got Stafford,
- 46:34Harvey, Puka, Adams and Barnard going heavy on the Rams.
- 46:38All right, Errol, you're up. All right, the board.
- 46:42From him, get it away from him all.
- 46:44Right, I'm going with Jared Stidham.
- 46:46No, I'm just kidding. I.
- 46:49Don't know, it would be funny if if he doesn't just to stick it
- 46:52to Jeff. I'm so I'm so sad that I missed
- 46:56Jeff's phone call. Yeah, of the one day I missed.
- 47:00So am I. I'm going to go.
- 47:05I'm going to go Sam Darnold. I'm going to go Kenneth Walker.
- 47:10I'm going to go Puka. Where am I at?
- 47:14Stafford Walker Puka That's already 14.
- 47:18No, he took Darnold. Oh, Darnold.
- 47:20Darnold Walker. So that's 12.
- 47:24We got 3 left for two spots all. Right.
- 47:30No, he went Darnold 10th. Walker Puka.
- 47:33Yeah, yeah, that's 12. Yeah, that's 12, Yeah.
- 47:37So he also can't take the booty. No, I don't want the booty.
- 47:42All right, I'll, I'll take I'm. Going to tell Brittany you said
- 47:47that. She won't care.
- 47:52She'll just be happy Nathan doesn't happen.
- 47:53That's right. I'll go with Mams in Ferguson.
- 47:57All right, all right. So I got a lot of Ferguson.
- 48:01A lot of Ferguson. Yeah, well, he's been on our.
- 48:03Show you know this. Yeah, we had him when he was, he
- 48:07was a senior in high school. He came on the show and
- 48:10interesting dude, man, interesting dude.
- 48:12No question. He.
- 48:13Seems to make a big play every game.
- 48:15You know one big play every game right now.
- 48:18Very nice. All right, Errol, I got I got
- 48:22you here with Darnold, Walker, Puka, Mims and Ferguson.
- 48:27We will go over the results on Monday's episode.
- 48:32Again, if you don't like how it goes, you can't cry about it.
- 48:35You got to save your tears. All right, ladies and gentlemen,
- 48:42we got to get into this Drury story.
- 48:45It's definitely a story of craziness.
- 48:48And I'm here to to entertain you Ranger fans.
- 48:52As we all know, last Friday the Rangers general manager Chris
- 48:57Drury wrote a public letter to Ranger fans saying that the team
- 49:00will really retool this season. Drury added he doesn't consider
- 49:05this a full rebuild, but that the team will be open to trading
- 49:11some of their Rangers popular players.
- 49:16That's going to be fun, popular star players around the
- 49:19deadline. Mr. Panarin was then told that
- 49:23there would be no extension talk, leading to the the belief
- 49:29that he will be likely to be moved at the trade deadline.
- 49:33Jury mentioned wanting to be to get faster and younger, building
- 49:37around certain core players and prospects and wanting to shed
- 49:41off some cap space. He added or ended the letter
- 49:45describing the start of a new strategic plan.
- 49:50That you like that and a strategy, a plan and said that
- 49:55the team will still play hard despite their struggles this
- 49:58season. Panarin will not be so easy to
- 50:01move as will the as will other veterans like Adam Fox, Vincent
- 50:08Trochik, Igor Shasturkin and Mika Zabitejad, who all have
- 50:14full no movement clauses and captain JT Miller and Jonathan
- 50:18Quick have partial no trade clauses.
- 50:21The Rangers have just 2.25 million in cap space and are
- 50:26last in Eastern Conference with 48 points, having played more
- 50:30games than any team besides the Red Wings.
- 50:33Here's the thing. Everybody knows that McKenna is
- 50:38the big prospect. Everybody is talking about.
- 50:40This guy's as good as Connor McDavid, might even be better.
- 50:45I mean, obviously he's playing for Penn State right now.
- 50:47He's playing great hockey. He's playing for Team Canada,
- 50:50great. This guy is special.
- 50:53I'm going to tell you this right now, there's no way the Rangers
- 50:57are getting that number one pack.
- 50:59And if that's what the Rangers are doing and that's what Chris
- 51:02Drury is trying to plan, and this is something that I had
- 51:06fights with somebody that was on the show a long time ago,
- 51:08Speedy, you know what I'm talking about.
- 51:10Anthony Scoltori. No, you know what I'm talking
- 51:13about. He traveled with me.
- 51:16He went to the draft with me. Filk.
- 51:18Mr. Filk and Filk has his own hockey show and I, I'm going to
- 51:22blast him here. Oh boy.
- 51:25I remember when we went back and forth about Jack Hughes and I
- 51:29said there's no way the Rangers are getting Jack Hughes and they
- 51:31didn't get Jack Hughes. They got the second best player
- 51:34in that draft who's no longer on the team.
- 51:36He's playing for Seattle. And then when they got Lafinir,
- 51:40I attacked him again because I said Lafinir is not going to be
- 51:43much of anything. He's definitely not Sidney
- 51:45Crosby and he's not. He's going to probably be either
- 51:48traded or let go in some kind of way in the next year or two.
- 51:53The fact here is the Rangers are making a big mistake keeping
- 51:59Chris Drury around right now. The rebuilding should be with
- 52:02the new GM and Sullivan and Sullivan should choose who he
- 52:06wants to work with. This guy is a two time Stanley
- 52:09Cup champion. This guy has been successful
- 52:12building franchises including the Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh
- 52:16Penguins. He understands how to build a
- 52:18team and this guy who has been trading away pieces, telling
- 52:23players that he's not moving him and then moving him at the trade
- 52:26deadline and, and and messing up the juju in the locker room has
- 52:31always been an effective, just determined idiot over there.
- 52:36As an executive for the New York Rangers, I don't want to hear
- 52:39James Dolan go out on a national broadcasting show for WFN and
- 52:44come out and say that I trust Drury.
- 52:47I trust them. Meanwhile, this guy is hired.
- 52:50How many coaches? How many coaches has this man
- 52:53hired in the last five years? This guy is an absolute waste
- 52:56and he hired 2 Stanley Cup champion coaches, 2 possibly top
- 53:0210 greatest coaches of all time. Peter Laviolette was a top 7
- 53:06coach of all time. Sullivan.
- 53:09You can argue as a top 10 coach of all time, and the fact is, so
- 53:14when you look at the perspective of where this team is going,
- 53:17when you hear retooling, but we're not rebuilding, how?
- 53:21What does that mean? You're retooling but you're not
- 53:24rebuilding? How about you should have
- 53:27decided over the last couple of years, I'm playing your
- 53:29youngsters. You have all these prospects,
- 53:31all these guys, all this offensive optional players that
- 53:35you have in your farm system and you haven't called really any of
- 53:37them up. And now you're going to trade
- 53:40away some of the more popular players like Vincent Trochik,
- 53:44who's a good player, Adam Fox, You going to trade a Long Island
- 53:47guy who is been one of the better defenseman when he's
- 53:50healthy, Eager Schisturkin, who you decided to give 11 and a
- 53:53half, $1,000,000 to when it made no sense because he had one
- 53:57great season. If you get traded for JT Miller
- 54:01when obviously the Rangers should have never gotten rid of
- 54:03him years and years ago. I mean, the fact here is the
- 54:07Rangers organization is put in a standstill because there's one
- 54:11guy leading the way and that's Chris Drury.
- 54:14He's an absolute idiot. He doesn't know what he's doing.
- 54:17He never knew what he was doing. And the fact that James Dolan is
- 54:20riding or dying with this guy tells me that the Rangers are
- 54:24going to choke. They're trying to choke because
- 54:27they want that number one pick, because they feel that number
- 54:30one pick can change that franchise.
- 54:32It can. They just because they're trying
- 54:35to lose out this season, they're not going to get McKenna.
- 54:38They're not. They're going to lose out on
- 54:39McKenna because every team that I can remember that we're
- 54:44getting that number one pick because of their bad record.
- 54:46Now, since this lottery thing has come to fruition, they've
- 54:51never gotten that pick. If you're one of the worst two
- 54:54teams in the NHL, those guys never get the pick.
- 54:58So Ranger fans, if you think for one second by losing out the
- 55:03season, you guys have the best chance of getting McKenna, you
- 55:06are sadly mistaken because the Islanders were the 10th worst
- 55:10team in the NHL last year and they won the lottery.
- 55:14They won the lottery and the And then you know, the NHL didn't
- 55:18cheat because guess what Gary Bettman did?
- 55:20He did something that nobody ever has done.
- 55:23He did it right in front of the television and I think
- 55:28basketball should do that. I think football should have a
- 55:31lottery and obviously baseball has brought a lottery in.
- 55:34This Ranger team is is absolute insult to Ranger fans.
- 55:38They have so much talent and they have more talent than the
- 55:40Islanders do. And this team is the worst team
- 55:43in Eastern Conference and the Islanders are one of the best
- 55:45teams in Eastern Conference. What that tells me is, is it's
- 55:48not the coach, it's the GM. It's the guy running the
- 55:51organization because nobody wants to play for him and nobody
- 55:55and, and pretty much everybody that I've heard through the
- 55:58Grapevine can't stand the man. So the downfall of the New York
- 56:01Rangers is one guy and one guy only.
- 56:03Chris Drury. Yeah, and Mike Sullivan was
- 56:05brought here for to help out this younger core because they
- 56:08had a lot of Rangers that have had a prospect development
- 56:10system that has been very flawed even with some of these top end
- 56:13draft picks that they've had. And there's a reason again,
- 56:15Capococko's already gone. The La Freniere has been
- 56:18underwhelming for a number one pick and he's now stuck there
- 56:22probably because I think he's a contract that's probably
- 56:24untradable at this point. And really you're you're only
- 56:26going to get a little bit of value with pin Aaron at this
- 56:29point because pin Aaron and him are very far apart.
- 56:32I would just say they hold on to him.
- 56:33But again, he doesn't want to be there.
- 56:35So you're going to have to trade him for less tro check and you
- 56:38might get some value from because we've seen a lot of
- 56:40these like more well-rounded centers still be a hot commodity
- 56:43with NHL teams during the trade market.
- 56:45Ryan O'Reilly was a big one with the Blues.
- 56:47We saw that with Nazim Khadri. I mentioned last show is going
- 56:51to be one that he was valuable with Colorado.
- 56:52So Trochek is that type of player that still might get it.
- 56:55That's really all you're getting is a banjad's on a downturn.
- 56:58Igor, you're not going to trade him.
- 57:00He's your goalie of the future. But again, I agree, you should
- 57:02have never paid him over almost $2,000,000.
- 57:05Another Chris Jerry. Yeah, but that's, yeah, not
- 57:08reading the reading the market. Connor Halibuck was the Vesna
- 57:11winner and got a contract of 10 million.
- 57:13Ottinger got a little less than that.
- 57:15And both are better goalies than Igor.
- 57:17Just think about this. You had Capoco, who's the number
- 57:20two pick, who they traded away, who's, by the way, only has five
- 57:24goals in Seattle this year. And you have Alexis Lafenier,
- 57:29who was the number one pick, the number one pick.
- 57:33He had 53 or 54 goals going into the draft.
- 57:37Everybody was comparing his skill to I think it was Sidney
- 57:40Crosby. This guy's nowhere close to
- 57:42Sidney Crosby. To me, he's a fourth line player
- 57:45at best. Think about it.
- 57:46The Rangers haven't developed a great player in years.
- 57:50In years. And don't give me out of fucks
- 57:52because he wasn't their guy. They didn't draft him.
- 57:55Carolina. Did that's not Drury's guy
- 57:57either, that that was the regime before that.
- 57:58So it's not like you could give Chris Drury credit for him.
- 58:01Like again, there's again, a few good moves that maybe he made in
- 58:05short term, right in short term. That's the that's my point.
- 58:08Those were the beginning of that core, which got the Rangers to
- 58:11their surprise 2022 run. And those trade headline moves
- 58:15helped. And he's living off of that.
- 58:17Meanwhile, the next year, and I'll admit I fell for the next
- 58:19year, in 2000, 1023, because I thought they were finally
- 58:22getting the veteran leadership they needed, getting Tarasenko,
- 58:24getting Kane. I actually picked them.
- 58:26I was right about Vegas winning the Cup.
- 58:27I picked the Rangers to win the East that year.
- 58:29I was wrong. But since then, the core has
- 58:31been very. Speedy, you are a die hard
- 58:33Ranger fan and I know Fish is a Ranger fan and I everybody here
- 58:38besides me is probably a Ranger fan.
- 58:41You can't sit here today and and tell me that you're happy for
- 58:45where the Rangers are going and where the Rangers are probably
- 58:48going to be for the next three to four years because this
- 58:51rebuilding is going to take a while.
- 58:54Look how long it took the Islanders to rebuild this team
- 58:58and, and again, they made a great move for Bo Horvat.
- 59:01It looks like Lamorello has won that trade because look at that.
- 59:06Look at the guys that they gave up.
- 59:08They're nobodies and and Bo Horvat's one of the leading
- 59:11scorers on team candidate this year in the NHL.
- 59:14So it looks like the Islanders are riding or dying with that
- 59:16trade and it worked out for them and then they landed arguably
- 59:21one of the best prospects the NHL has seen in the last 10
- 59:24years and got lucky with them. The Rangers are trying to do the
- 59:28same thing, but guess what? But they're all old and nobody
- 59:31wants these guys. And they gave them the one thing
- 59:33you shouldn't give them no movement clauses.
- 59:36You don't give an older player a no movement clause because that
- 59:41means they only going to just sit.
- 59:43The only way they're going to be traded is if they go where they
- 59:45want to go. And usually that never happens.
- 59:48So you're caught in the in the crossfire of crap.
- 59:51And that's where the Rangers are right now.
- 59:53And I got news for you guys. The Rangers are going to be
- 59:56fair. They're going to be bad for a
- 59:57while. You.
- 59:58Do that if you're crap GM, though, Errol, if you're if
- 1:00:01you're bad at your job and you go, oh, I know what's going to
- 1:00:04get him to say yes, I'll give him a no movement clause.
- 1:00:08Yeah, of course he'll say yes. Now you have no leverage.
- 1:00:12You're only supposed to give those to your absolute star
- 1:00:14players. If anybody.
- 1:00:17And he gave it to half the team. And look at and and look at
- 1:00:20what's going on now. They have to get rid of all
- 1:00:22these guys. They can't.
- 1:00:24I I mean, Panaron's gone. I don't know what they're going
- 1:00:27to get for him. It's not as much they show.
- 1:00:29Anything. Not much, but he's gone.
- 1:00:32They're going to have to do it because it's a big cap number
- 1:00:35and and, and they need the space.
- 1:00:36So they're going to do that. That's the smart move to do
- 1:00:39first. And then Lafreniere they're
- 1:00:41going to get rid of because he still has some value because
- 1:00:43someone's going to be dumb enough to think that they can
- 1:00:45fix him. And, and and that's and that's
- 1:00:48the first two moves. I really hope that they don't
- 1:00:50get rid of Trochek, but again, you know, it's.
- 1:00:53He's going to be the one that needs a bidding war though the
- 1:00:55most because teams love those types of centers.
- 1:00:57But. But speedy, Speedy, they don't
- 1:01:00need to rebuild. They're just retooling.
- 1:01:04They're just doing a little little here and a little there
- 1:01:08because this is a team that could make it to the Cup right
- 1:01:11now. Just a little retooling.
- 1:01:13They had prospect and defense depth.
- 1:01:15They. Had prospects and they decided
- 1:01:18to part ways with some of them and Drury just doesn't know how
- 1:01:21to bring these guys up slowly and gradually so they can
- 1:01:24develop. And then they bring in these
- 1:01:26guys that don't like to work with younger players.
- 1:01:29They're veteran coaches that want to go with veteran players.
- 1:01:33They made mistakes and I'm not saying Sullivan is a mistake.
- 1:01:36He works very good with the younger players.
- 1:01:38We've seen him do without with the the Pittsburgh Penguins all
- 1:01:40those years. But the problem here is they had
- 1:01:44a coach and he's now coaching the Edmonton Oilers.
- 1:01:47They've decided to let him flee away to the Edmonton Oilers.
- 1:01:51And look how successful the Edmonton Oilers have been since
- 1:01:55he left and went over there to the Edmonton Oilers.
- 1:01:58So it's it's always been Chris Jury and that was under Chris
- 1:02:02Jury's watch. It always has been Chris Jury's
- 1:02:05watch. And Chris Jury had the guy, the
- 1:02:07right guy. And he decided, hey, you know
- 1:02:09what, I'm going to give it to Peter Laviolette because he's
- 1:02:12the bigger name and he made the mistake.
- 1:02:15And now the Rangers are, it's been costly for the Rangers
- 1:02:18organization because the development of some of these
- 1:02:20young guys, some of these Boston College players that they have
- 1:02:23right now. And honestly, they're playing in
- 1:02:26the AHL and juniors and all this other stuff.
- 1:02:27When are we going to see that next superstar that's going to
- 1:02:30be called up for the Rangers? Could we remember the last
- 1:02:32superstar player the Rangers have had that they developed?
- 1:02:36Could you remember the last one? I'll tell.
- 1:02:38You it's it's Fox, isn't it? Fox is the last.
- 1:02:40They didn't. Draft him.
- 1:02:41They didn't draft him. They didn't draft them.
- 1:02:44Carolina. Draft Yeah, they're probably
- 1:02:45going back to the Tortorella era group.
- 1:02:47Who? Who was it?
- 1:02:48Yeah, that like exactly like that's how far back and.
- 1:02:51Then further than that, yeah. Noblock was probably their coach
- 1:02:54though in in the minors. Noblock, Yeah, Noblock.
- 1:02:57Noblock definitely affected that, but I think they also just
- 1:03:01have a player development issue. In general, honestly, honestly,
- 1:03:03the last player development player that they had in their
- 1:03:06farm system was the Neil Smith era.
- 1:03:09And that's Brian Leach. That that's the last player that
- 1:03:13I can remember as a Ranger, quote UN quote, that they
- 1:03:17brought up over the years and developed it.
- 1:03:19Mike Richter and and Brian Leach.
- 1:03:22Those are the only two guys that I can remember that I that I
- 1:03:25could pick out. And Shisturkin is also he's a
- 1:03:28development guy, but I, so I won't put a goal down there.
- 1:03:31A regular player, it's Brian Leach.
- 1:03:33That's it. Yeah, the Rangers have always
- 1:03:34developed goaltender as well, but yeah.
- 1:03:36Sergei Zubov was a good player. They brought him up.
- 1:03:39I. Mean, I guess you can count JT
- 1:03:41Miller. Sort of.
- 1:03:43He wasn't. Great.
- 1:03:44He was too streaky. He wasn't a great player with
- 1:03:46the Rangers until he went to Vancouver Rangers.
- 1:03:48Yeah. And so it really, if it's Neil
- 1:03:50Smith and what are the Rangers do to the guys like Neil Smith?
- 1:03:54They never invite him back to games.
- 1:03:56They never let him go into the press box.
- 1:03:58They treat him like garbage. This guy was the last big, you
- 1:04:02know, big GM that they had that won a Stanley Cup in 94, that
- 1:04:06drafted the right players and built an organization around
- 1:04:09young talent and veterans. He was the one that made the
- 1:04:12trade for Marc Messier. He was the one that make the
- 1:04:14trade for Adam Graves. He was the one that that moved,
- 1:04:18moved players around to bring in Steve Larmer and all those other
- 1:04:21guys. But guess what?
- 1:04:23The Ranger fans forgot about him because the Rangers haven't won
- 1:04:26since then. And then keep talking about
- 1:04:28Henrik Lundquist. Henrik Lundquist?
- 1:04:31Yeah, he was a great goalie. The Rangers have always had
- 1:04:33great goalies, never great players that they built from
- 1:04:37their farm systems. And why?
- 1:04:39Because of terrible GM's like Chris freaking Drury.
- 1:04:42The guy's a loser. He stinks.
- 1:04:45He's a worthless piece of garbage.
- 1:04:46And I don't want to hear James Dolan go out there on social
- 1:04:49media and say, hey, we believe in this guy.
- 1:04:53I believe that this guy is going to figure things out.
- 1:04:56He hasn't figured it out in five years.
- 1:04:58What makes you think he's going to figure it out in the next 7?
- 1:05:02So I it's, it's ridiculous. It's absolutely ridiculous.
- 1:05:06How many great coaches does he need to hire for James Dolan?
- 1:05:10Open up his eyes and realize this guy's a moron.
- 1:05:13An absolute moron. A tool bag.
- 1:05:15You want to read tool? Because he's a tool, that's why.
- 1:05:19Yeah, and it's an organizational issue, too.
- 1:05:21When you look at they're trying to be flashy all the time and
- 1:05:24they're just missing a lot of the little things.
- 1:05:26Even when they're even on their contending teams, like they're
- 1:05:28always missing center depth, they're always missing
- 1:05:30physicality in the playoffs. It seems like they're always
- 1:05:33missing those small things because they want to go for
- 1:05:35Flash both with the coaches and with the players that they bring
- 1:05:37in. They trade for Rick Nash, flashy
- 1:05:39guys, sign Panarin, flashy guy. Like these guys are just
- 1:05:42disappointed in the playoffs and it's just they're stuck in a
- 1:05:44philosophy that no matter how much they retool or how much
- 1:05:47they could get little gems of the third line to develop guys
- 1:05:50like Cooley and Lava that actually been pretty good for
- 1:05:53for their expectations and prospects.
- 1:05:54They still have the Kapo Kakos that flop massively, the LA
- 1:05:57veneers that flop massively. It when they come up and the
- 1:06:00Rangers just have an organizational structure issue
- 1:06:02because they try to do be too flashy and not either fully
- 1:06:05rebuild or commit to the right types of players.
- 1:06:07And it's a big problem that they have.
- 1:06:08And that's why they they might be.
- 1:06:10I'm not saying they're like dysfunctional where they're as
- 1:06:12badly run as a team like Buffalo, but they haven't been
- 1:06:15as good as they should be for a team with that kind of
- 1:06:17reputation. Well, it's about time that we
- 1:06:20all get it off our chest because as a Ranger fan, it's been
- 1:06:23driving me crazy watching them thinking that.
- 1:06:26Look, it's a rebuild. It's not a retool.
- 1:06:29They have to tear the whole thing down.
- 1:06:31And I agree, I would prefer if it was someone besides Drury.
- 1:06:35Everyone was complaining about John Davidson before Drury.
- 1:06:38I didn't think he was that bad. I thought he made some smart
- 1:06:41roster decisions. I thought the that they wrote
- 1:06:43the first time was curious and then Drury makes the same
- 1:06:47mistake writing the same stupid kind of letter to the fans when
- 1:06:52it's obvious all your moves failed.
- 1:06:55Dude, you failed and and you're pretending like all you have to
- 1:06:59do is retool. No, you got to, you got to light
- 1:07:02it on fire, you got to get the cap down, you got to figure out
- 1:07:05who your core 4 guys are. Obviously Starkins going to be
- 1:07:09one of them because no one's going to take that contract, so
- 1:07:12you might as well keep him because he's good.
- 1:07:14I love how Trocheck plays. He's from, you know, I think
- 1:07:17he's from Pennsylvania. He's from the air, not that far
- 1:07:20away. I love that guy.
- 1:07:21I love Fox. I hope you can get healthy.
- 1:07:23And I want you to give up on him early.
- 1:07:25And I think he identified one other guy.
- 1:07:27And then you just get rid of everybody and you go young.
- 1:07:30What's the point? You got 48 points, you're not
- 1:07:32going anywhere. Stop pretending like you need to
- 1:07:34retool, idiot. Thank you to all the Apple and
- 1:07:37Spotify fans from the audio and video.
