- 0:45And welcome back to the Boundary Corner Podcast with my partners
- 0:49Brian Siegler, John Vitali in Shelton Malls.
- 0:53I am Curtis Wilson in this episode is brought to you by
- 0:56Doctor Jeremy Counts at the Main Street Pharmacy, your friendly
- 0:59neighborhood pharmacy located at 301 S Main St. in Blacksburg.
- 1:04Also letting everybody know, don't forget Rowdy for Robbie,
- 1:08that is continuing. This week's going to be back in
- 1:10Lot 1, back at spot 164. Again game day.
- 1:14Don't quite have the time yet. I would assume probably sometime
- 1:18between 10:00 and 11:00, but definitely check that out.
- 1:23Also at Main Street Pharmacy you can purchase there they are
- 1:26$7.00 at the pharmacy only Venmo on game day in lot 1 cash and
- 1:33Venmo accepted. Gentlemen, how are we doing on
- 1:36this wonderful winning Tuesday? I tell you, recording the pod
- 1:40after a win is a whole lot more fun, man.
- 1:44Everything's more fun waking up, going to work.
- 1:48Seeing your kids, seeing your wife after a win, so much
- 1:51better. Just got a whole better attitude
- 1:53towards the world. It feels good to watch a
- 1:58competent football team, that's for sure.
- 2:00It does feel good to watch a confident football team, and
- 2:03that was a good thing on Saturday night as the Hokies win
- 2:073619, excuse me, 3617 over ODU. We got a lot to talk about.
- 2:14We are going to unlock that game in a new segment this year to
- 2:19the podcast. But before we jump on that and
- 2:22then before we actually get to know the enemy Purdue, we're
- 2:24going to just have a couple talk about a couple news and notes
- 2:27that have broken over the last week since we last talked.
- 2:30And it came out Friday, but they did not do the Friday end of day
- 2:34dump. They actually did it early in
- 2:36the morning. The expansion vote for the ACC
- 2:39finally passed. Stanford, SMU and Cal are now
- 2:43finally members. Just real quick, Shelton, what's
- 2:46your initial take on this? Yeah, I mean obviously they had
- 2:51to get one of the votes to flip in order to make this move
- 2:53happen. That turned out to be in C State
- 2:55who kind of bucked with away from UNC and making that
- 2:59decision. You know it's a it's an
- 3:01interesting move. Obviously you add, you know, two
- 3:04schools with good Olympic sports in in Callan, Stanford and then
- 3:08I'll see SMU I think has a burching program, lots of big
- 3:11money in that program with their boosters overall.
- 3:15I don't know. If it does a time for the
- 3:16league. We'll see how it plays out.
- 3:18I think it's worth like a, you know, kind of a Plan C move
- 3:20because they just, you know, they didn't really have the off
- 3:23season they wanted to relative to the Big 12 and the SEC.
- 3:26So yeah, I I mean, I don't know what to make of it really.
- 3:29I think it's just it's just kind of the way the summer's been
- 3:34gone. I guess they wanted to just, you
- 3:35know, add someone and bring some type of juice to the league.
- 3:38But. But yeah, it wasn't, it wasn't a
- 3:40thing where I'm like, yeah, this is super exciting.
- 3:42It just kind of, it's kind of is what it is.
- 3:46Couple of different things. I guess #1, if you're going to
- 3:50grab them, why not grab, why not just go ahead and grab, you
- 3:54know, Oregon State and think Washington State, you're already
- 3:57grabbing other two, grab them, let them have somewhere to go
- 4:00to. Oregon states actually ranked
- 4:02right now. They got DJU out there.
- 4:04Hey, we need all the eyes we can on the ACC right now if that's
- 4:08what we're going to do. I thought it was a little bit.
- 4:13I don't know what how like how they're going to go and what
- 4:15they're going to do as far as like the SMU thing.
- 4:18They're saying they're going to use, I guess, their campus or
- 4:21places that they have there as a meeting ground for some of the
- 4:25sports and things like that. I guess that makes sense why
- 4:29they would bring them in. But still kind of, you know,
- 4:33don't know much about what we're doing.
- 4:34But hey, it looks like they're not getting paid for a while.
- 4:37So if we can just make money off them being here for a little
- 4:40bit, shoot, let's do it. Why not?
- 4:44We we rounded up all the Olympic sports and going to Jerry World
- 4:47and. Why not?
- 4:51That seems like what the plan is.
- 4:52But I mean to me from a big picture standpoint for the ACC,
- 4:56this is a tread water move. This is a we had to do something
- 5:01and like Sheldon said, this was a number C on the the choices
- 5:06there. You know, we talked about it a
- 5:09lot like this is probably 2 years late.
- 5:12On making a move for expansion, they probably should have
- 5:16circled the wagons when Texas and Oklahoma jumped ships that
- 5:21they started, they should have started having some
- 5:22conversations. Then they waited.
- 5:25Then you lose USC&UCLA to the big and then you know you still
- 5:30didn't make a move after that. So this is what happens when you
- 5:33drag your feet. You end up kind of getting the
- 5:37the the scraps if you will. They're they're pretty solid
- 5:40scraps in terms of. You know what they bring to the
- 5:43table for sports that aren't football, especially looking at
- 5:46the the West Coast teams. But all this does is really kind
- 5:51of bring us back even with the Big 12 in terms of financials.
- 5:55And I don't think that's a longterm sustainable goal
- 5:58because you're you're going to lose probably one to three of
- 6:04the bigger name schools in your conference at some point in the
- 6:07next 10 years, right? So.
- 6:11It's just a tread water move to me.
- 6:12We'll see if if they can make some other moves between now and
- 6:18then. But it like it looks like it's
- 6:20something that's not really going to come to fruition.
- 6:23It's just going to keep the ACC alive after some of these big
- 6:27dogs kind of leave the conference at some point in the
- 6:30next 10 years. Yeah, that was the bigger pieces
- 6:32is right now including Notre Dame, they're at 18 teams and if
- 6:36we've been keep hearing there's five or six teams that want to
- 6:41leave if it's effectively kept above 12, ESPN can't terminate
- 6:44the contract. So now they're at that position
- 6:47where they can't terminate the contract tally you mentioned.
- 6:50They ain't getting paid for a long time.
- 6:51SMU is getting nothing for seven plus years.
- 6:56Nothing. Just happy to be here, They just
- 6:59happy to be here. But as we know, if you ain't
- 7:01ever seen pony excess, that's a lunatic bunch down there.
- 7:05I am sure their boosters are going to be stroking some
- 7:07massive freaking checks. If you ain't seen pony excess,
- 7:10probably one of the best 34 thirties ever made.
- 7:12Go check that out. Definitely top five.
- 7:14Definitely top five way up there.
- 7:16Also Stanford cash at the. End of the night.
- 7:19You go watch that again tonight. Well, you got work to do, so I
- 7:21mean why? Not Stanford and Cal taking
- 7:24significantly reduced payouts. I think they're only taking 30%
- 7:27upfront again. So the money effectively is
- 7:30going into the current conference there.
- 7:32You know, there's talk about how many times you're going to go
- 7:34cross country and things like that.
- 7:36The ACC is picking up, obviously slamslot games.
- 7:39Why the ESPN wanted to make the move.
- 7:41But this is such a reactionary move because if you take a look
- 7:45at all the programs that were left out there, especially once
- 7:48Oakland Tech, Oklahoma and Texas decided to leave, you could have
- 7:51got a potential cream of the crop in the middle of the
- 7:53country and then some solid West Coast teams.
- 7:56Instead, they stuck around nose in the air.
- 7:59Now we don't need to do that and the next thing you know,
- 8:02conference out West died. The ACC is likely next on the
- 8:05chopping block. Wouldn't shock me.
- 8:07Brian, you say 10 years, somebody's just going to take a
- 8:10risk and try to get out of the Gor.
- 8:12Somebody's just going to take that risk watch.
- 8:15And and somebody stated a couple times, State of Florida's crazy
- 8:19enough they might be able to go to court and get it completely
- 8:22dissolved. All right, let's talk about
- 8:25this. Some breaking news that we had
- 8:28heard for a while there. It's Nick Gallows out for the
- 8:36year, which sucks. Yeah, I hate that for him.
- 8:40Yeah, six years senior. So, Brian, I'll lead back to you
- 8:44on this. That leaves Benji Gosnell,
- 8:47Dequan Wright and HSG as your tight ends.
- 8:52What do you think? They're going to miss the
- 8:55leadership in that room for sure.
- 8:57That's that's the biggest thing that I think is going to be
- 8:59heard here. I think from a just an overall
- 9:02talent perspective the the two guys behind him are are very
- 9:07good, very reliable from that standpoint but.
- 9:10It's something to be said for a guy that's seen it all was in
- 9:13the system last year, took the majority of the snaps last year.
- 9:19You can't really replace that type of experience, especially
- 9:22when the other two guys, you know, one didn't get a single
- 9:26snap last year because of injury and the other was in a reduced
- 9:29role as a true freshman and playing mostly kind of a joker
- 9:34type role in the offense. So that's something that we're
- 9:37going to have to look at, but. You know, sucks for him and I
- 9:40mean that's that's a big blow and you know he came back to to
- 9:45try to have a, you know a better year this year and unfortunately
- 9:48doesn't get to to really be a part of it as we move forward.
- 9:52But you know we got Gosnell looked really good in in the
- 9:58game against ODU we saw right. He had a couple drops also came
- 10:02back made a couple plays in the passing game.
- 10:04So I mean we got some ability there I think from a blocking
- 10:08perspective. Benji showed out pretty good,
- 10:10kind of in the same ballpark with with with Gallo and from
- 10:14that perspective. So we'll see if he can kind of
- 10:16continue to hone that skill, but definitely a big blow from a
- 10:19leadership perspective. Yeah, definitely.
- 10:22You don't never want to, you know, discount somebody being
- 10:25heard in the time they put into the to the program.
- 10:28So, you know, definitely prayers going out to Nick Gallo.
- 10:31I think he's a captain, Captain this year, so I'm sure he'll
- 10:34still be around the team still, you know.
- 10:37Be able to provide that leadership even though he's not
- 10:39on the field. But I will say with the guys
- 10:42that we do have in now, although we're young, but we're young in
- 10:46a lot of places, seems like we say that a lot.
- 10:49The tight ends that we have are kind of a different mold than
- 10:53him. If you go back and look through
- 10:54like Virginia Tech history of tight ends, Gallo reminded me of
- 10:59like a Ryan Mallett, the tight ends that we have now.
- 11:03Benji's kind of close to Nick, but he's a little bit more
- 11:06athletic, so I don't want to go quite a Bucky type tidying for
- 11:13him. He's just himself.
- 11:15But when you look at like Daquan, right, he's going to be
- 11:18flanked out wild a lot more like Bucky was.
- 11:20So I think for the offense is going to give them some more
- 11:23flexibility of things they can do.
- 11:26But we just got to figure out as far as when we're wanting to
- 11:29block those zones and when we're wanting to, you know, have that.
- 11:33Two set tidy and close, who's going to be able to block and
- 11:37who's going to go and put a body in front of somebody.
- 11:39So definitely not, you know not feeling good about Nick being
- 11:45out, but I think that the pieces that we have, we have some some
- 11:49variation there. So you got anything on this one,
- 11:53Sheldon? I know this is this is what's as
- 11:55we've heard for a couple weeks about his knee.
- 11:57And obviously you know you don't want to scream it out until you
- 12:02know it's confirmed. Yeah, I mean I wasn't for gal.
- 12:08I wasn't huge fan of him as a blocker.
- 12:09You know he didn't great out very well.
- 12:11Obviously the leadership experience is important and the
- 12:14the veteran leadership and all that stuff is important because
- 12:18you know you're talking about Gosnell and and a one right who
- 12:20are pretty pretty young players. So we'll see that all that plays
- 12:24out. I mean the one thing I thought
- 12:26was interesting. I'm trying to pull up the snap
- 12:29count from the Old Dominion game as we speak, if I can get it.
- 12:34But you know, Dick on, right? Actually didn't play very much
- 12:38against against Old Dominion and he had a couple.
- 12:41He had at least a one drop that I saw maybe 2.
- 12:44So I don't know what's going on with him.
- 12:45Honestly. I think guys know I like his,
- 12:46you know, physicality. I like his just his motor and
- 12:49his athleticism and he's gonna be a big piece.
- 12:52We'll see what happens with, right.
- 12:53Maybe as a yips sophomore slump. I don't know, but he just, he
- 12:57didn't look quite right in that first game, so I think it's
- 13:00going to be Gosnell and sending. Yeah, I know Wright's been
- 13:02battling some injuries. I don't know exactly what
- 13:04injuries he's been battling, but we've heard about him battling
- 13:07injuries and missing practices and things like that.
- 13:11I mean, maybe a little bit down the line, but I'm also going to
- 13:14be excited to see Zeke Winbush, see what they can get out of
- 13:18him. He was very dynamic in high
- 13:21school, just. I think he played against
- 13:23Highland Springs in one game and he was, if not the best player
- 13:27on the field. He was.
- 13:28He was close to it. He was a dynamic player that was
- 13:32a lot of good players on that field.
- 13:33So I'd like to see what he does at tight end, maybe about a year
- 13:38away. He may get a little bit of time
- 13:39this year, but I like to see what he's got.
- 13:42Yeah man, I know the staff feels good about him, so it's just
- 13:45going to be a matter of getting him into the rotation at some
- 13:48point as we go along through the season to get him some
- 13:51meaningful. Plays and snaps this season,
- 13:56hopefully maybe to maintain that red shirt and carry that on to
- 13:59the next year and have him kind of take the next step.
- 14:03It is one of those things that since it likely happened in the
- 14:05preseason, something that we have been preparing for
- 14:08adjusting to versus 44 games in. If Gallo had been doing a good
- 14:12job of solidly blocking, not blocking it out of the water,
- 14:16catching some passes, then you have to really adjust quickly.
- 14:19Where you saw we saw De Quan. You did mention Shell, he did
- 14:23drop a pass, but he did catch a nice little little dig route up
- 14:26in the middle of the field for first down.
- 14:28We saw Benji on that seam route. Brian screamed to me as we were
- 14:31watching it to play from the spring game Right there up the
- 14:34seam, which was awesome to see. Real quick.
- 14:37Tally saw a comment that some I made out here and he wants to
- 14:41address it. So this is going to be tally
- 14:43space-time before we get into what we want to talk about.
- 14:46So I'm going to pull it up here. Tally, I'm going to let you read
- 14:49it is from one of our listeners, Cucked this, so go ahead.
- 14:52Yeah he was in here early man and he was in here early putting
- 14:55stuff in. So just wanted to address I seen
- 14:58because again thank y'all everybody was listening.
- 15:00We we definitely appreciate y'all like.
- 15:04Follow, share, all of that good stuff.
- 15:06But what he says here is he said, Hey, what's up fellas?
- 15:09Virginia Tech really drives me crazy.
- 15:11I'm going to be honest. Pride has the personality
- 15:13mannerisms to be Tech coach, but he just doesn't understand
- 15:18running a Power 5 program. Our players small, all of the
- 15:22whole statement, you can say what you want.
- 15:25But that last piece where it says our players small, if you
- 15:29think our players are small now because of pride.
- 15:32Where have you been the last 10 years, four years, five years?
- 15:36We were running out five foot 10 defensive ends.
- 15:41No disrespect to any of those guys that we had, but we are
- 15:45much bigger than we were in the past.
- 15:47Not saying that this team is going to be anything.
- 15:50I don't know what we're going to be, what we're not going to be.
- 15:53I just wanted to address the Our players are small.
- 15:56I've been screaming this for years.
- 15:58And one thing, so I pay attention to that.
- 16:00So I wanted to bring that up with our players being small.
- 16:04Some of it's just what we have, Some of it's we don't have to
- 16:07get in the weight room, But some of it is just if you go look at
- 16:11the players that they're recruiting, linebackers, DNS,
- 16:15defensive tackles. They are safeties are much
- 16:19bigger than they have been in the past.
- 16:20So I think prize got that going in the right direction with the
- 16:24players being small thing and then another thing, some of our
- 16:27players that played are freshmen like they are.
- 16:31This is their first, they're just now getting on campus for
- 16:33the most part. So they're not even to their
- 16:38peak, but where they will be so. I think the progress that he's
- 16:41making is good and I hope we continue to move forward.
- 16:44It's going to be a big week so we can see what we got the test
- 16:47for us, absolutely we are and we'll say good evening to Levar
- 16:52says good night, good evening. And yeah, it is a work in
- 16:54progress and it has to be given some time because you can't
- 16:57expect the coach to come right in and what he's given
- 17:00immediately make 6 foot guys turn into 6 foot three guys and
- 17:04220 pound guys to be 260 pound guys doesn't happen overnight.
- 17:08So I definitely get that. All right, So told y'all, we got
- 17:11a new segment and we're going to be doing this after every game
- 17:14and it's something our buddy coach Robbie Compton and his
- 17:17team sits down and do every Monday.
- 17:20And what they, what we call it is, we're going to call it is
- 17:24tell the truth Tuesday. So tell the truth and what we're
- 17:28going to be looking for, We're going to be talking about what
- 17:30went well in the game, what went bad, what is something that we
- 17:37did not prepare for. And I'm going to just put that
- 17:39on two things. We as fans didn't prepare to see
- 17:42it and where we feel like our coaching staff didn't prepare to
- 17:45see it. And then finally, what can we do
- 17:48better moving forward? So you're going, we're going to
- 17:51do this every Tuesday. And by all means, if you've got
- 17:54something that went well as we're talking about it bad, not
- 17:57prepared for, or what we got to do better, move forward, put it
- 17:59in the chat. We'd love to hear from you, but
- 18:01let's start with what went well and me and Brian sitting on the
- 18:04couch sipping some whiskey on Saturday night, we actually had
- 18:09an identity on offense. Say what you want to say, we had
- 18:14an identity on offense. And the first thing I'll say I
- 18:18noticed was is that the same tile of bowing in the booth
- 18:24because those play calls did not look the same as last year.
- 18:26What do y'all think? I mean, yeah, it's a lot, lot
- 18:29more zone heavy in the running game.
- 18:31But from a passing game perspective, we weren't as
- 18:35hesitant to throw over the middle of the field intermediate
- 18:40routes. There was, you know, a little
- 18:43more RPO mixed in there than what we saw last year.
- 18:45So it's kind of kind of what we expected, what we've talked
- 18:49about a lot, but it's nice to see some of that play out.
- 18:52Actually in a live game and not just hypothetically and not just
- 18:56in a scrimmage that you watched or or spring game, so good
- 19:00seeing the offense kind of take those steps forward and you know
- 19:03looks like we we can sling it around a little bit.
- 19:06So those playmakers are helping. Yeah, definitely, definitely
- 19:10glad that Allergenics man. Golly.
- 19:14I mean, he's just explosive, man.
- 19:20Besides being on the field, if you watch like the postgame
- 19:23stuff, like if you've seen how many of his family he had there,
- 19:27that's why you recruit people to come to.
- 19:29That's why you want Virginia players to be at Virginia Tech.
- 19:32Like, I don't know how many tickets his family network after
- 19:37the game. He had like 40 people up there.
- 19:39Yeah man. And it's like if they can fill a
- 19:42section by themselves, man, It's going to be easy to sell the
- 19:44games out. But talking about play calling.
- 19:48Like you said, we did have an identity.
- 19:50No matter if we liked the identity or not, if he was
- 19:52watching the game, there was an identity there.
- 19:56I wish they would have got away from it sometimes myself because
- 20:00we were missing stuff or you know we just didn't find the
- 20:04holes. If the we didn't find the open
- 20:06receiver, if he was there, different things like that.
- 20:08But besides that, I mean, we seen the two, we seen 2
- 20:11quarterbacks play. May not have been as much or as
- 20:14little as some people like, but. You know, they talked about it
- 20:17and we've seen both quarterbacks get in the game.
- 20:19So I was very, you know, enthused by what I see when
- 20:26you're when it's going on, you're sitting on pins and
- 20:28needles. But you know, at the end of the
- 20:30game, 3617 game, I said 14 points, we win by 19, I'll take
- 20:36it. I will take it all day and
- 20:38tomorrow. We covered.
- 20:41She'll know about you, man. What do you feel about the play
- 20:43calling? And I'm I'm sure there's other
- 20:44things that you always talk about you saw more of.
- 20:48Yeah, I thought the, I thought the the passing concepts were
- 20:50fantastic. I mean they got the bottom space
- 20:52out to the perimeter. They got wells on some rollouts
- 20:55where, you know, tech playmakers could make plays.
- 20:59I thought the rockcomers were good.
- 21:01I love that you mentioned that. That fake screen pass that
- 21:04seemed right up the middle with Gosnell was fantastic and they
- 21:08actually they use a screen pass as earlier in the game to set up
- 21:11a play like that So we can talk about you know situational play
- 21:13calling. You want to use plays to set up
- 21:15plays later in the game. They did that.
- 21:17I thought they had good route combos.
- 21:19They they ran option routes that attacked the leverage of the
- 21:22defensive acts, like that first touch on pass at Jennings where
- 21:25I think he ran a corner routes to the back corner in the end
- 21:28zone. Yeah, and I just, I thought it
- 21:32was really good. I mean the the passing team was
- 21:33good. Like you said, they went over
- 21:34the middle, which Bowen's predecessor certainly did not do
- 21:38any of. I thought it was really good
- 21:40overall. Yeah, any, I mean.
- 21:44Any and it was, it was multiple concepts.
- 21:46You call crossers. You called, you saw some drags,
- 21:48you saw again that right dig to the middle of the field.
- 21:51That is very awkward, to see a tight end get up the seam and
- 21:55then just stop, come back. Grant Wells almost took the
- 21:59umpire's head off like that dude.
- 22:02By the way, quick reaction time of that umpire to get out of the
- 22:05way. But something else I want to
- 22:07say, and there's a couple comments in here.
- 22:09We'll throw them up in just a second about what went well.
- 22:12Give Grant Wells, dude, he was not perfect and when he came out
- 22:16he was jacked to the sky. Somebody helped that boy calm
- 22:20down before in the first quarter of a game because.
- 22:22He had the crazy eyes, man. He had the crazy eyes and he was
- 22:25missing. Just missing.
- 22:27And I go back and look, if he's not his amp, Tune's probably a
- 22:30touchdown. We probably get another first
- 22:32down. The game might have been really
- 22:34more indicative of how it looked.
- 22:38But tally, give, give your man some props.
- 22:41Because Tally, yeah, everybody knows, man.
- 22:45I'm very critical of any quarterback, but definitely
- 22:50Grant Wells, because I've watched him.
- 22:52But when? When I just said no turnovers,
- 22:54man, I said no unforced turnovers and he didn't have
- 22:58any. You know, he protected the ball.
- 23:01The line protected him. I don't think they had a sack.
- 23:04You know, as bad as people talking about our line is, and
- 23:07we didn't do this. We didn't.
- 23:09We didn't give up a sack. Well, ODU wasn't good.
- 23:11I don't fucking care if we play in the school of the blind.
- 23:14If they ain't having quarterback, then that's good.
- 23:18Had no sacks. He had no touched.
- 23:20I mean, no turnovers. Had no interceptions.
- 23:24Hey, I'm good and like I said, it's a victory because last year
- 23:28was not a victory and we had four interceptions.
- 23:32So that's progress to me. I'll take.
- 23:36It good point by Cobbs here talking about minimizing
- 23:39penalties and winning the turnover battle.
- 23:41We didn't do that a whole lot last year.
- 23:44We had and usually we'd either have one, the other or both.
- 23:48And we had both against ODU last year where we had a bunch of
- 23:51penalties, we had a bunch of turnovers.
- 23:54Completely flip the flip the the script on that this year, so
- 23:58excited to see that and just I think overall seeing Grant
- 24:06finally settle in and and and have he put 33 good quarters
- 24:10together that that first quarter a little shaky.
- 24:13I think sometimes you know I think even you know the drone
- 24:16swap in there kind of threw his his rhythm off a little bit too.
- 24:19So yeah, it seemed a little forced to me.
- 24:22Yeah, yeah. And we'll talk about that.
- 24:24But as far as like what went well, I mean, you said that pass
- 24:28Pro was good. Grant had a really good pocket
- 24:33most of the night. Is that the best pocket he's
- 24:36ever had as a coach? He's QB.
- 24:38I mean, yeah. Statistically, yes.
- 24:42From what? From what we've been watching,
- 24:44yes, statistically. Yes, go ahead.
- 24:49They allowed two quarterback Currys the entire game, fewest
- 24:53since Duke in 2021. And he draw back what, like 37?
- 24:5830 times, Yeah, 30 times, yeah. So that's like, I mean, I don't
- 25:01know what wonder what that's like 8%, That's nothing.
- 25:04Yeah, that's pretty. Tell me 8%, I would advise
- 25:08everybody who is a hokey fan who is like me, very critical of
- 25:12everything that goes on on the team and you get some free time,
- 25:16go back and rewatch the games and watch the lines, because I
- 25:20know it's so hard because the camera's going where the ball
- 25:24is. But if you can just watch the
- 25:25line and go back and watch last year's line, even if you just go
- 25:30watch ODU, just go watch the ODU game.
- 25:32That game for this game, it it is, it's different.
- 25:36You know we can talk about, well, it's just ODU.
- 25:39It was just ODU last year and we lost.
- 25:42Great job by the line just to protect the man, Great job by
- 25:45the fans, man. The fans got two points in
- 25:48there, you know, y'all yelling and screaming and jumping.
- 25:51Had him snapping the ball 50 feet over his fucking head.
- 25:54So yeah, I asked the question on Twitter, like maybe a week
- 26:01before the season of who would score the first points and
- 26:04nobody say it. Fans.
- 26:08That was who scored the first points, The fans.
- 26:10And it was loud in that man. It was loud and I tell you what
- 26:15one reason it continued to stay loud was not only scoring points
- 26:19moving the ball. We talked about it last week go
- 26:22hit the quarterback Brian we put pressure on them all night and
- 26:27and she'll not let you start pulling the data but Brian just
- 26:29watching just the the line all night push.
- 26:34Yeah, I mean talk about a PR man.
- 26:36He was coming off the edge hot every snap, Every time there was
- 26:41a drop back, he was coming off the edge hot. 5 sacks compared
- 26:45to one last year, four other tackles for loss.
- 26:48I mean that that's that's solid across the board.
- 26:52You know, a PR good start to his potential ten sack campaign this
- 26:56year. Already A2.
- 27:00Yeah, already A2, already A2. That's a.
- 27:02That's a good start, Game one. Yeah, I mean I think the the
- 27:07pressure we've got a pass rush now.
- 27:10Having a pass rush makes the rest of the defense a lot
- 27:13easier. So if we if we can keep that up
- 27:16against as the competition you know slowly ratchets up as we go
- 27:20through September here, it's going to be interesting to see
- 27:24if we can maintain that, but good start at the gate.
- 27:27What about your BMF tally? First, second of you, Burgos,
- 27:33you know, yeah, you're looking around, man, and you see people
- 27:36around the quarterback just get there.
- 27:38You know, you see you. We had a couple of different
- 27:40people getting to the quarterback.
- 27:42And Burgos is a young guy. I think he's a sophomore.
- 27:45You know he is. Shoot, he's, he's come in and
- 27:49stole some, stole some playing time.
- 27:51He's starting. You know, I would have never
- 27:53said Burgos was going to be the starter.
- 27:56And he goes in, he's got the first sack of the year.
- 27:59I think Penne got him a sack. CJ McCray comes off the bench,
- 28:03he gets his sack. Like games like that just build
- 28:08some confidence, you know, and it makes the other team have the
- 28:11game plan. That's a couple of things that
- 28:14we didn't have in the past years.
- 28:16We didn't have people game planning for certain linemen.
- 28:19We didn't have people game planning for more than one
- 28:22offensive playmaker. So excited about that. 100% and
- 28:28and you saw it all night, it was all areas of the line.
- 28:32That we're creating the pressure and it was when the backups came
- 28:34in, like you said, McCray got a sack and they got a sack.
- 28:38Sheldon, were you able to pull up anything about how much
- 28:40pressures we got throughout the night versus ODU?
- 28:44Yes, I'm trying to, Yeah. Yeah.
- 28:46So I got it here. So we had 16 total pressures,
- 28:50which includes 5 sacks and 11 quarterback hurries.
- 28:53Good. So I don't.
- 28:55Know they only draw back like 25 times.
- 28:58Probably something like that, yeah.
- 29:00I mean obviously. Apr was just a stud and like he,
- 29:04I mean he can do the bull rush. I mean he'll just he'll just
- 29:07dominate you. So I'm really I'm really excited
- 29:09about him and CG McRae I I thought I was gonna play more
- 29:12than he did. He only played him full of
- 29:14snaps, probably only got like. Six, yeah, I was looking at that
- 29:17too show and that threw me off a little bit because I mean he
- 29:20looks good when he gets in. So I I don't know.
- 29:23I'm, I don't know about that. I think he may be one of those
- 29:27light players. You know, lights turn on and he
- 29:30he, he shows up. Yep.
- 29:32And so if the the number Shelton just gave, they drop back 25
- 29:37times, that's a 64% that we were getting hurries and then
- 29:43finishing on 30% of those. If you tell me those are the
- 29:48numbers all year, write it down. I wouldn't back away from that
- 29:53because that's some crazy numbers and I know they're going
- 29:56their things are going to level out.
- 29:57But just that start tally and Brian, I'm going to let y'all
- 30:01just talk about this before we go to.
- 30:02Unfortunately we got to say that what didn't go well, how much
- 30:06confidence do y'all think now those young players have and
- 30:09those guys who didn't experience, you know, wins last
- 30:13year, first time we scored 30 points.
- 30:16Since. Oh God, it's been well over 2
- 30:19years. You got on Twitter.
- 30:21People was pissed. We was all pissed.
- 30:24Everybody was on there. Oh, he should have scored more.
- 30:27Oh, this is we look horrible. Oh, such and such is better.
- 30:30Every game is related to Virginia Tech in hokey Twitter's
- 30:36eyes. I understand.
- 30:38We got to take a breath, man. If we get a win, we get a loss.
- 30:41I'm going to be on that edge with you, but we could win and
- 30:44we win by 1.3 stores. I got to slow myself down man,
- 30:50because I again, I go back and I'm y'all are going to get tired
- 30:53of me saying it. But this is what I think.
- 30:55You lose by a lot, then you lose by a little, you win by a
- 30:58little, then you win by a lot. If this is the year that we're
- 31:01winning by a little and we start off with a 19 point win, I'll
- 31:05take it. I will take it.
- 31:07Yeah. I'm right there with you.
- 31:09I think this is a a good start for the confidence of this young
- 31:13team, which I mean they are young in a lot of places that
- 31:17matter, you know, offensive line, linebacker, secondary.
- 31:24You know, we're we're young in a lot of places, but we've Got
- 31:27Talent to go with that this year, whereas last year it was
- 31:31mostly just just a lot of youth and.
- 31:35And and and and or or sixyear guys that.
- 31:38Didn't see at the field a ton those previous five years.
- 31:41So it's good to kind of flip that around a little bit and get
- 31:46some confidence early because I feel like we can kind of carry
- 31:50that momentum here into Purdue, get get home again the very next
- 31:53week. If you can start stacking a
- 31:55couple there together, that'll give you some confidence as you
- 31:57head on the road back-to-back weeks against Rutgers and
- 32:01Marshall. And and hopefully carry through
- 32:04September and have a have a have a good September if you know
- 32:07finish. Been a long time.
- 32:08It'd be nice to finish 401. We had a good, so five or five
- 32:11and oh in September. But you know, I don't want to
- 32:13get ahead of myself, let's let's look at Purdue first.
- 32:16But carrying that confidence into Purdue is important.
- 32:18Yes, it is. Now let's just be real.
- 32:20Not everything was sunshine and roses Saturday night.
- 32:23We know it and we'll talk about it.
- 32:25And this is where we go. To tell the truth.
- 32:27Tuesday, what went bad. And I think you know.
- 32:31And y'all can, we've already hit on this a little bit.
- 32:33That first quarter was kind of shaky, getting the cobwebs off
- 32:35and getting the rust off. I think what was more important
- 32:39though is what happened in the second quarter, They did shake
- 32:43it off. So it was bad.
- 32:44You started slow. I don't think we can start slow
- 32:48in the next three weeks, especially in the next three
- 32:51weeks. We cannot have the slow start
- 32:53like that or we will be playing from behind.
- 32:55But as much as that was something.
- 32:58Brian, I know you watched the tape and you were screaming all
- 33:01night about linebacker fits in in containment, so the floor is
- 33:05yours. Yeah, backside contain was not
- 33:09very good. We ended up letting quarterbacks
- 33:13sneak out, get leaky in the backfield.
- 33:15We had a couple runs that were cutbacks.
- 33:19One in particular was cut all the way across the field.
- 33:23All the way across the whole dam field they were they were trying
- 33:26to set up a double pass. Next thing you know they still
- 33:28got the first down on the other side of the field.
- 33:32You got, you got to make sure when you're pursuing that you're
- 33:35pursuing with contain leverage because eventually that's going
- 33:41to come and bite you in the ass and linebacker fits.
- 33:44You know some of that had to do with ODU that that ultra spread
- 33:48they had those stacked receivers in that ultra spread.
- 33:51They had everybody kind of outside the numbers.
- 33:53That spreads you out. We I don't think we did a good
- 33:56job of adjusting to that quick enough but the the fits in
- 34:01general were were inconsistent. I think we had a we had you guys
- 34:07kind of not where they needed to be on a handful of plays.
- 34:10We saw guys start to over pursue.
- 34:13Once the running back had some kind of a couple Gasher runs
- 34:16they started over keying on the running back over pursuing the
- 34:20play. That set up some big runs for
- 34:21the quarterback. So.
- 34:23Got to clean that up. But definitely a fixable thing.
- 34:25But definitely one of the from a defensive standpoint, the kind
- 34:30of the biggest blemish to take away from ODU.
- 34:35Yeah, yeah, we had some like pretty much like you said
- 34:39Brian's talking about the the linebacker fits and things like
- 34:42that. It's even on some of those plays
- 34:44where we got pressure on the quarterback.
- 34:46He escaped and you know made a run out of it and you know, may
- 34:50have got a first down or got 7-8 yards.
- 34:54We got to do a better job. But when we're fitting those
- 34:56holes, you know, keeping that outside arm free so we can be in
- 35:00those running lanes to try to slow them down or rip the ball
- 35:03out of something. And I think a lot of new people
- 35:06at new places are just going to have to learn that on the fly.
- 35:11You know, it sucks that that's what college, that's what
- 35:13football is. But we we got, we got to do a
- 35:17better job of when we do get pressure and pressures all
- 35:21around that quarterback, we definitely don't need him to
- 35:23burst out of there and get 10 yards.
- 35:25So fitting and containing and things like that, we got to do a
- 35:29much better job at. Because that that wasn't good.
- 35:33Sheldon hit us up real quick. What were the linebacker?
- 35:36You have the linebackers grades up there.
- 35:39I do, yes. Basically, just to give you this
- 35:42skinny Lawson was pretty bad. Keller was pretty bad.
- 35:48Trying to look around here for guys who got at least a handful
- 35:51of steps. Tisdale was OK, but he was not
- 35:53great on in the run fits. So yeah that's kind of, that's
- 35:58kind of was. And then CJ McRae was a little
- 36:00bit better, but didn't he didn't play very much.
- 36:02And then Will Johnson, they had him a little bit better, which I
- 36:04thought was surprising because I thought he made a couple for
- 36:08poor fits there as well. So yeah and especially with the
- 36:10run defense it was not great. So but that's, I mean that's
- 36:13kind of what we saw last year too.
- 36:14Like these guys are still growing.
- 36:16So you figure out at some point, hopefully they can, you know,
- 36:18kind of start making those mental mistakes.
- 36:21Yep. And I think the big part of it,
- 36:23now that you say that is now all those guys, because that really
- 36:28was the first time that those guys were working together as a
- 36:31unit, right? It's on tape, it's on tape.
- 36:35You can sit down. I do have a feeling Coach Pride
- 36:38is going to be going into that room quite a few times this
- 36:40week. Have some conversations with
- 36:42people about what's been going on.
- 36:45Couple other things. We definitely talked about, you
- 36:47know, not being the best. And again, what are some
- 36:51defensive coaching adjustments? It felt like, especially on
- 36:54those runs, it took us about 3/4 to finally decide, OK, we're
- 37:02going to adjust to this now. When we made the adjustment,
- 37:06them moving the ball was over pretty much for the remainder of
- 37:08the game. But Brian, this is Chris Moss
- 37:12first time. What do you think?
- 37:14Do you think this was just trying to go to the well one too
- 37:17many times or was it trying to get enough data to decide?
- 37:21OK, we've got to adjust now. So I'm going to take a little
- 37:25bit of a hedge here. I think Marv saw that he had
- 37:29lost a key piece of his secondary and knew the youth
- 37:33that was behind that and didn't want to shift to what he needed
- 37:37to shift to, which is. Running a lot more man outside
- 37:42and committing a couple more players into the box to keep the
- 37:46the holes a little bit less leaky and make being able to get
- 37:49to those fits a little bit easier.
- 37:53But I think he was a little bit of hesitant going to that.
- 37:55Like I said, you had Stroman out once, he was out on that end of
- 38:00the first half. Maybe he was a little bit
- 38:02hesitant of going to that on a consistent basis.
- 38:07That's when they had you know some success in the running game
- 38:09there. So once he finally made the
- 38:11adjustment and you know the clock was kind of against them
- 38:13and they had to go in more passing, I mean we can just shut
- 38:15it down after that. So if you can get there a little
- 38:19bit quicker that'd be nice. And like I said, I don't know if
- 38:21the the reason is because of those issues with targeting or
- 38:26or if it had something else to do with just you know, not
- 38:28wanting to lean on the the younger guys as quick.
- 38:32And some of it too was I think pry hit on it in the like the
- 38:38halftime presser halftime little you know interview or whatever
- 38:43that he had when he talked about you know that we were sending
- 38:46pressure and when you're sending pressure you're leaving some
- 38:49part of the field open, you know, whether it's for them to
- 38:52run a draw or them to run a pop pass or something.
- 38:55And he was like, hey I mean we send a lot of pressure.
- 38:57We might I might have to talk to him about you know holding up a
- 39:00little bit. So that's I think that's Marv
- 39:03just trying to he was trying to make something happen and great
- 39:07job of getting pressured to the quarterback when we got it.
- 39:09But every now and then we need somebody to stay there and
- 39:12inspired. We need to you know drop back
- 39:14and coverage and things like that.
- 39:15So he's young and he's learning. So I think, like you said,
- 39:19pride's going, he's probably popping his head in that room a
- 39:22lot this week, especially with who we're playing and what's
- 39:26coming up that we'll talk about. And I'm gonna hit the Gray cat
- 39:29up here because he mentions they are an experience and it did
- 39:32show but. There were some athleticism
- 39:35there because as as many, as many gashes as we got.
- 39:40You know, no one ever broke anything over 30 yards and there
- 39:44were only three explosive runs over 20 plus yards.
- 39:47So you know, again, it's on tape now.
- 39:50And one last piece of the bad we got to talk about Brian wanted
- 39:55five yards of carry. Sheldon, hold on, hold on.
- 39:59Always that Sheldon Shelton's Our dad got Shelton.
- 40:02Did we get 5 yards of carry? Not even close.
- 40:08No, you could double like you could double and we barely would
- 40:11get it. So.
- 40:13Brian brother was bad. Just just tell me what you saw
- 40:18and I know are we going to do the tape now or is just going to
- 40:21be later? We we can do the tape.
- 40:25Got a few? Clips here and Brian's going to
- 40:27do some explanation because Brian where we getting shoved
- 40:31back in our laps. For the most part no we we were
- 40:36we were at least getting some stalemates some decent push I
- 40:41would say on the on the front there you know the problem was
- 40:45we weren't getting to the second level worth of damn and you know
- 40:49we'll we'll talk about that a little bit but against that
- 40:51three man front that odd front especially if it's a stacked
- 40:54front that can be problematic so.
- 40:58We can look at a couple here. Say thank you to Shelton for
- 41:01getting these pulled for us so we can take a look all.
- 41:05Righty. Can we go first clip?
- 41:09There was one of the times, yeah.
- 41:11I'm just going to let it run first and then we can kind of
- 41:13run it back here. So let me just inside zone here.
- 41:18We but we got 2 problems. Both of those inside linebackers
- 41:21there are going to get in the backfield.
- 41:24You got Benji up there up at the top of Parker.
- 41:27A little slow getting hip to hip here means Parker's a little
- 41:31late coming off. You got a linebacker in the
- 41:35backfield. Get a little hit on the running
- 41:37back, but let's move inside a little bit more.
- 41:40We got Shick and we got Kate Moore at the right Garden
- 41:44center. Bob Shick does not do a good job
- 41:48of trying to take over this nose here.
- 41:50He didn't use his eyes. Looking at that backer comes off
- 41:54a little too quick. That backers up in there on the
- 41:57play side A and he's trying to come over the top.
- 42:01He should have pushed Kaden off here.
- 42:03Kaden should have been picking up that that backer there.
- 42:07So both those backers kind of get a free run at the at the
- 42:09running back here. Make a little tackle for loss.
- 42:12Fortunately only one of a what a what A couple tackles for loss
- 42:16in the game here. But that one was pretty ugly.
- 42:19Two guys, not really really Two sets of combo blocks.
- 42:22Not really going off and getting to the second level the way you
- 42:25want to see them. Yeah, and that linebacker, I
- 42:27think it was 42. He's good.
- 42:30Oh yeah, he's a good. He's a good linebacker.
- 42:32You got to put a hat on him. Yeah, I think this is just guys
- 42:37not not communicating and not using their eyes.
- 42:41Something that that should get better with time, but not not a
- 42:45good effort on this play in particular and we'll go ahead
- 42:48and run the second one here. Somebody would have just got
- 42:57that guy. Was that the middle linebacker?
- 43:00Well, you at least get you'll give a solid 5 yard gain here.
- 43:03If if we're watching Bob shake here, he's he's going to have a
- 43:07combo on the the defensive end down here at the bottom and this
- 43:12backer here. But he he takes his own step,
- 43:16but he gets his shoulders turn too much.
- 43:20He doesn't keep them parallel enough with a lot of scrimmage.
- 43:22So he kind of loses this backer. If he'd have kept his shoulders
- 43:27a little more square, gave his little little right hand punch,
- 43:31but he kept his eyes on the backer, he'd be able to see
- 43:34where that guy's going. He wouldn't miss getting that
- 43:38wall because we get that wall and seal on the linebacker here,
- 43:42That's at least a solid 5 yard game.
- 43:44There's gonna be some contact right this level here and you'll
- 43:49you'll end up getting, like I said, a solid. 5-6 yards at
- 43:52least. If you break a tackle, you might
- 43:54end up getting a few more so. He looking he looking third
- 43:57level before you go to 2nd. Yeah, yeah.
- 44:00And I mean, I get it. He, he clears here, he doesn't
- 44:03see anybody. He's finding, he's finding the
- 44:04next guy to hit that. I mean, that's what you're
- 44:06supposed to do. But he lost the live backer that
- 44:09that should have been the guy he's sealing off.
- 44:12Good deal. Thanks Siegler for breaking that
- 44:14tape down. Hopefully some of those things
- 44:17can get corrected before next. Or for this Saturday.
- 44:21Excuse me, We'll get into that in just a few seconds.
- 44:24I'm I'm hoping Bob Chick is not a weekly punching bag all.
- 44:29Right, I'm hoping. I'm hoping the quarterback pull
- 44:32a couple of those too. There you.
- 44:34Go. All right, so the third thing
- 44:36we're going to always talk is what happened that we were not
- 44:39prepared for. And we wrote just two things
- 44:42down on this. I think the 1st and Brian's
- 44:45already mentioned it was the RPO middle rushes from that stacked
- 44:49ultra spread. I don't think anybody saw that
- 44:51happening. Honest to God, don't.
- 44:53If somebody had that outlined out there, please send us the
- 44:56article where somebody said it out loud.
- 44:59I don't think anybody saw. Nobody watched enough Fordham
- 45:01tape, apparently. I don't know.
- 45:03Yeah, but I don't think they did that often at.
- 45:04Fordham, though, they didn't. They didn't.
- 45:08And then the other one would be the linebacker combination
- 45:11because Sheldon you just mentioned there a few minutes
- 45:13ago Will Johnson actually had a significant amount of stops and
- 45:17and then just kind of looking at it.
- 45:19It wasn't always like Mike Will because there is at one point
- 45:24time it was him and Lawson on the field at the same time.
- 45:27Which one of those two things were more surprising or y'all
- 45:29didn't expect Shelton? Of those two, I'll defer to
- 45:35Brian here because I think he would have better insight on
- 45:39this. Yeah, I mean I think the to me
- 45:45it would be the linebacker combinations.
- 45:46I think the. You expected probably a new
- 45:51wrinkle from ODUI mean they're playing an instate rival,
- 45:54technically a level up in terms of Power 5 versus G5.
- 45:57You knew they're going to pull out something to mess with us
- 46:02schematically because they probably can't match up talent
- 46:06for talent at this point, especially on the defensive side
- 46:10of the ball. So you kind of expected some
- 46:12sort of wrinkle there? I think the linebacker
- 46:15combinations are interesting just because we saw WILL in the
- 46:17too deep. You know we didn't know.
- 46:20You know there was talk of McDonald being in the too deep
- 46:23there. There's a lot of different
- 46:24combinations. But Will being up there was kind
- 46:25of surprising when we looked at the depth chart for Week 1 and
- 46:28him getting that much run. And especially with the
- 46:32combinations like you said with the Lawson out there with with
- 46:35them sometimes you know we had Keller and and Tisdale on the
- 46:40field at sometimes. So there was.
- 46:41They mix and match a lot there. There wasn't.
- 46:44Necessarily a defined Mike and will in for in terms of that TV
- 46:49that they definitely rotated guys kind of across the board
- 46:51there in a in a more interchangeable fashion and I
- 46:54think we anticipated. So it'll be interesting to see
- 46:57if that's something that carries over, if that's just something
- 46:58they were playing around with against ODU as they kind of
- 47:01feel, feel out what they want their final rotation to be.
- 47:05Tally, what about you? I just didn't think the
- 47:08quarterback was going rush for more yards than he passed for.
- 47:13Close to, I mean, you know, getting breaking out and getting
- 47:18these runs and some of them design runs.
- 47:21So that RPO was a little bit unexpected, you know, as much as
- 47:26the as much as the seeing the different people.
- 47:29That linebacker was a little, I don't want to say alarming, but
- 47:35I just didn't know it was going to happen.
- 47:36I definitely didn't expect, you know, their quarterback to be.
- 47:41On the run as much as he was and making stuff, make plays.
- 47:44But thank the Lord that we made enough plays because I don't
- 47:48know what we've been practicing, but everybody was raking at the
- 47:51ball, so when we got a chance we was getting that ball out of
- 47:55there. Yes, we did 2 fourths fumbles, 1
- 47:58interception and they were putting the head on the ball for
- 48:01those two fumbles, which is great to see, but again. 3/4
- 48:07fumbles we got on 2. 3-4 fumbles.
- 48:10Well, four if you count the bad snap because that's considered a
- 48:13force fumble in the We'll take that one too.
- 48:17All right, real quick. Y'all.
- 48:19Last piece we do is what can we do better moving forward.
- 48:22We're going to be kind of short and sweet with these me straight
- 48:25up Grant Wells has to keep the ball on RPO's tally, pointed it
- 48:30out a couple times if he keeps a couple RPO's.
- 48:34And again, we don't expect 20 yards, We don't expect 15 yards.
- 48:38Get 3, get 4, make them be accountable for you, Brian, What
- 48:42do you got? I'm going to go with the
- 48:45offensive line here. Got to get to the second level,
- 48:47got to be able to maintain those combos, keep your eyes where
- 48:51they need to be and communicate across the board because I think
- 48:57that that's something that was missing a little bit.
- 49:00There was a couple times where guys should have pushed the guy
- 49:03off and didn't, a couple times where they were trying to get to
- 49:05the second level too quick. Or not at all.
- 49:09So there's there's just got to be better communication and
- 49:12better consistency in those combo blocks.
- 49:15Kelly. Quicker coaching adjustments
- 49:19that first quarter we was all inhale, purgatory, whatever you
- 49:22want to call it. And then the second quarter as
- 49:24soon as it starts laying, catches the touchdown fast and
- 49:27everybody breathes a little bit. What was that play we were
- 49:31waiting on that Let's get that a little bit early.
- 49:33That's all I'm gonna say for now. 100% and Sheldon, Yeah, so
- 49:39I would say Office of Line Communication in conjunction
- 49:42with play selection, they shall tootin forced 10 missed tackles
- 49:45against ODU. He had less than three yards per
- 49:48carry. That's not acceptable.
- 49:49He is doing everything he can to try to break the first level and
- 49:53he can't do it in conjunction with that.
- 49:55I also think the play selection was a little bit odd.
- 49:58Virginia Tech was very run heavy on 1st down, but if you look at
- 50:01the numbers, they they had 21st down runs.
- 50:04Only three of them were successful.
- 50:06So that's like 15%. I would prefer to see us pass
- 50:09Paul Moore in first down because I just don't think running is
- 50:11going to get the job done. All righty, Yes or no answer,
- 50:16Was this the best performance under Brent Pratt?
- 50:22I think you got to go, yes. I mean, I think you got to go,
- 50:25yes. Yes, I'm.
- 50:29Going to say yes, but it's not a enthusiastic yes because I'll
- 50:34say this. Relative to our talent level now
- 50:38compared to last year and relative to ODU's talent level
- 50:42compared to a Liberty last year, I think there's some arguments
- 50:46that could be made that that was a better win.
- 50:50But I think this is, this is a win that gives us I think more
- 50:53confidence because it is a season opener and I think we did
- 50:57more things all around well to win that game, but.
- 51:03Like I said, relative to the talent levels on both sides of
- 51:06the squad, you can make an argument for liberty, but I'm
- 51:08going to go. I'm going to go yes as well, but
- 51:09again, not, not, not as enthusiastic I think is the rest
- 51:12of the guys here. Brian is not following the
- 51:15instructions. Not following instructions.
- 51:17I'm going to say yes, that this is as well and I'm not going to
- 51:20get into anything else real quick.
- 51:22Tally, you mentioned it earlier, but y'all one of the coolest
- 51:24things was watching ACC Network, seeing Ali Jennings family up
- 51:28there and him kind of talking about running through that
- 51:30tunnel. And we we tell you mentioned it
- 51:33and we all know about it. That's the kind of kid you want
- 51:36to bring there because they want to be there, they're going to
- 51:40play hard. And he balled out damn near had
- 51:43three touchdowns, led the team in receptions with six for 172
- 51:47and two touchdowns. That was unbelievable to me.
- 51:52You know, that's just something you don't see every day and.
- 51:56I think you know he's already on A roll to get 1000 yards this
- 52:00season. Hopefully he keeps it up versus
- 52:02Purdue. All right.
- 52:03Before we get to know the enemy Purdue, we are going to take a
- 52:07quick commercial pause from our digital partners and Main Street
- 52:10Pharmacy. I can probably save you a lot of
- 52:12money and I can take a lot better care of you.
- 52:15That's pretty much it. My name is Jeremy Counts and I'm
- 52:18a pharmacist. I want to operate Main Street
- 52:20Pharmacy here in downtown Blacksburg.
- 52:22My brother's A pharmacist. I'm a pharmacist.
- 52:23My uncle's A pharmacist. My dad's a pharmacist.
- 52:25I remember he would give me M and M's to count in little pill
- 52:28counters. This is something I've always
- 52:30done, and I'm just lucky that what I know so well is something
- 52:34that I can do and feel good about it and get back to people.
- 52:37Pharmacies are your frontline defense.
- 52:39Pharmacy's job is to make sure you're getting optimal care for
- 52:42the lowest price possible. Also, we take the pressure off
- 52:46of emergency rooms. I'll tell people immediately
- 52:48when they need to go to the doctor, or I'll tell them if
- 52:50they just need a cream over the counter.
- 52:52If there's something that isn't commercially available, if it's
- 52:54something that's not available in a certain strength or a
- 52:57certain form or anything like that, we'll make it tailor made
- 53:00medications. Some of those options save
- 53:02people a lot of money. What motivates me?
- 53:03I get to take care of people and limit Blacksburg, I thought.
- 53:06Neat. As we take a quick break, we'd
- 53:11like to tell you about getting your free website report from
- 53:13our digital partner, Grassroots Digital Marketing Studio.
- 53:16They'll tell you how your website ranks on Google onsite,
- 53:19SEO and social media. No commitment to buy anything.
- 53:22You can get your free report by visiting grassroots
- 53:25digitalstudio.com/free Dash website Dash Report.
- 53:30Now back to the episode. Alrighty and we are back and we
- 53:35are going to get to know the enemy Purdue a game all four of
- 53:38us will be in attendance for. Brian, myself and Tally heading
- 53:42down Friday night. Shelton joining us on Saturday.
- 53:46Can't wait to be back in the bird for this game, but let's
- 53:49talk about Purdue. We're going to talk about the
- 53:51offense first. Talking about this scheme, it's
- 53:54a Gram Harrell Air Raid attack. So Brian, give me a little
- 53:57insight, give the fans a little insight on what we're going to
- 54:00see from Purdue Saturday scheme wise.
- 54:03Oh yeah, you already said it. We got the Gram Harrell Air
- 54:05Raid, we saw it last year against West Virginia.
- 54:08We're seeing it again this year with Purdue like we talked about
- 54:12last year. It's a slightly more vertical
- 54:14version of the air raid, don't run the ball much or or really
- 54:18effectively at least that what we've seen in the first game so
- 54:21far. But they'll occasionally hit a
- 54:22chunk play and they like to mix in some RPO concepts in the in
- 54:28the the air raid attack here too.
- 54:31So you'll see some RPO comp sets but mixed in there.
- 54:34But again, it's a typical Air Raid.
- 54:35They're going to hit you with a lot of short stuff.
- 54:37A lot of crossers get guys in space and let their athletes
- 54:41kind of make some big plays after the catch.
- 54:45Yeah, definitely. First, I guess the first athlete
- 54:47we were to talk about is a Dionne Burks.
- 54:50He's a wide receiver. Just giving a little bit of a
- 54:53back story on him or a little bit of information on him.
- 54:56So listed at about five 11175 as a recruit he was a 88 on 24786
- 55:07composite ranking. So about a mid three star, three
- 55:12star level recruit. Last week, he had four
- 55:17receptions for 152 yards. He had two touchdowns.
- 55:22I think his longest was 84 yards.
- 55:25So take it away, Brian. What you talking about this guy?
- 55:29Yeah, I mean, he's a game breaker.
- 55:30If he gets loose in the secondary, he sees the guy that
- 55:32you want to make sure doesn't have a whole lot of open space
- 55:35and that you bring him down on first contact.
- 55:38You know, really good against Fresno, but you know most of
- 55:41that yardage came with that one big play.
- 55:43There was three missed tackles, so you can break some tackles
- 55:45there as well. So that was something.
- 55:49Not a huge guy, but. Shifty, you know, gets away from
- 55:53stuff, keeps his legs churning. So he's the guy that we got to
- 55:57get to the ground as soon as he makes the catch.
- 56:00And they like to isolate him and man looks as well so they can
- 56:02kind of get him matched up, especially in the red zone.
- 56:06That's what they like to do is get him in This man looks where
- 56:08he's isolated on one side of the field and kind of just cook a
- 56:12little bit against man on man coverage.
- 56:15Sean, you got anything on him? Yes.
- 56:18He had 64 Smith tackles against President State which for a guy
- 56:22with only a four reception in the years, pretty insane.
- 56:25Biggest thing, biggest thing with Burke's average depth of
- 56:29target, 17 yards. So he's very much their, their
- 56:32deep ball guy. He's going to be running a lot
- 56:34of deep routes. So I have to make sure you're
- 56:35you're playing playing some tight man coverage.
- 56:39Yep, tell you mentioned the 84. His second longest was a 44
- 56:42yarder. So.
- 56:43He did a lot of damage in two plays there, and delivering him
- 56:48that damage was Hudson Card and Hudson Card.
- 56:51The Texas transfer 63210 out of Austin, TX transferred over.
- 56:58This guy was a pretty high prospect when he came out just a
- 57:01few years ago, you know class of 2020.
- 57:05He was a top 60 player, the number 2 dual cord.
- 57:09Dual threat quarterback in the country 97 composite 95 on 247
- 57:15and just kind of taking a look at his track record.
- 57:18You know with Texas he played in 12 games where you know through
- 57:23for just at excuse me, he played in 12 games last year at Texas
- 57:27where he threw just under 1000 yards, 6 touchdowns, 1TD against
- 57:31Fresno. Solid game 17 for 3254 and two
- 57:35touchdowns. Brian.
- 57:38What are we, What are we seeing from Hudson Card here?
- 57:42You know we we talked about the Graham Harrell offense here you
- 57:45know almost kind of read what seemed like is in terms of like
- 57:49high school rating and stuff like that.
- 57:51A mirror of what you know JT Daniels was coming out of out of
- 57:54high school with but card with a little bit more success.
- 57:58I feel like in the in the limited time there he's an
- 58:01accurate thrower of the football, doesn't take a ton of
- 58:04risk with the football I'll be that's inherent of the a rate
- 58:06anyway but. He's not going to put it in
- 58:09harm's way very often He will use his legs if given a lane,
- 58:13but he's not generally looking to take off.
- 58:14He's looking to kind of get those 3 steppers, get the guys
- 58:18in space and then get a good matchup with Dionne Burks down
- 58:21the field when he when he wants to take a shot, you know.
- 58:25But like most quarterbacks, he can get rattled when when
- 58:27pressure consistently, especially if it's coming up in
- 58:29his face there. Like I said, he doesn't really
- 58:31move too much in the pocket there, so.
- 58:34If we can get some pressure on him up the middle, I think we
- 58:37can get him a little rattled there.
- 58:38But you know, solid quarterback and like I said, really
- 58:41accurate, which, you know, you kind of expect of an Air Raid
- 58:44type quarterback. Anything standing out
- 58:46statistical wise, data wise Shelton for Hudson or is it just
- 58:50he is what he is? Yeah, he kind of is what he is.
- 58:53I mean last year at Texas PFF grade around 70, which is a
- 58:57little bit above average, he was around 92nd of 163 qualified
- 59:02quarterbacks, so nothing too special.
- 59:04I will say he did face pressure on 30% of his drop backs last
- 59:08year, so obviously blinds not doing a ton of favors obviously,
- 59:10which we'll get into, you know, soon.
- 59:14All righty, who we got next ally?
- 59:16So we talked about Hudson Card running, just a little bit of
- 59:19not wanting to run a lot. Last week he had 2929 yards on 6
- 59:27carries 13. His his long was about 13 so his
- 59:34running back is Devin Mockelby. He is He or he was a low three
- 59:41star, two star recruit out of Boonville IN.
- 59:45He's about 6 foot tall 200 pounds.
- 59:48His only offer out of high school was Navy and he walked on
- 59:52it Purdue. Now he is starting at running
- 59:55back. I think he is a sophomore.
- 59:58Last week he had 16 carries for 60 yards.
- 1:00:01His long was 20 yards. He had one touchdown.
- 1:00:04So that is going to be Hudson Cards guy that he's going to be
- 1:00:09wanting to hand the ball to the run.
- 1:00:12Yeah, and I mean, you know, you said he's a sophomore, red
- 1:00:15shirt, sophomore, former walk on.
- 1:00:17I had a good year last year, 900 yards, didn't didn't start,
- 1:00:21start the year as a starter. Had an injury.
- 1:00:23Got pushed into duty and and held up really well.
- 1:00:27Obviously struggled at the gate a little bit in this new system.
- 1:00:30You know, they had a week and banged up offensive line.
- 1:00:33So you know that kind of is what it is that that could carry over
- 1:00:38this week. We'll see.
- 1:00:39They had a, you know, we'll talk about the offensive line, but
- 1:00:41they had a center that was kind of rotating in and out and all
- 1:00:45this. So they they struggled.
- 1:00:46He had that one good play, that one good chunk play of 20 yards.
- 1:00:50Didn't really hit on a whole lot after that.
- 1:00:54But you know, he's a guy that that's 6 foot 200.
- 1:00:57He's a hard guy to bring down. Got to make sure you're rapping
- 1:01:00and he can't break off some chunk plays, but he's not a home
- 1:01:02run hitter. He's not going to hit those like
- 1:01:04big long ones, like a band of candor or anybody like that.
- 1:01:07So don't ever call that name on this podcast.
- 1:01:11Yeah, we're not going to see that, but he still is the guy
- 1:01:14that can get to the second level and kind of make a couple guys
- 1:01:17miss and things like that. But he's he's not going to be a
- 1:01:20home run threat. Yeah, that's kind of what I saw
- 1:01:23too in my statistical analysis. Look at the numbers here.
- 1:01:28You know he didn't force ton of his tackles, but the thing I did
- 1:01:31notice he's a big pass catching running back.
- 1:01:33Last year he had 274 yards as a receiver.
- 1:01:37So you know, gotta be aware that maybe some swing passes
- 1:01:39depending on you know, kind of how they how they do it, but
- 1:01:41definitely a big thread in the pass catching game all.
- 1:01:44Right. We'll definitely take note of
- 1:01:45that. We caught three passes last week
- 1:01:47too, 3 passes for 16 yards. Again that's that's a little
- 1:01:52check down, but again you have to think back, you have to think
- 1:01:54about him right here 16, that's not a great number but you look
- 1:01:58what he did last year, it's clearly proven success that he
- 1:02:01can be a positive gainer in that type of in that part of the
- 1:02:05offense. So you know, getting Jenkins in
- 1:02:09the flats and you know the sear peoples and the safeties and
- 1:02:13stuff have to be a credit or have to be accounted for in that
- 1:02:17because to be honest. Taking a look at their offensive
- 1:02:20line, Shelton was dropping grades on me a little while ago
- 1:02:23and their best offensive lineman which was Marcus Embo.
- 1:02:27Embo spelled MB OW, if I'm pronouncing that wrong, somebody
- 1:02:31tell me a six five 305 offensive lineman out of Milwaukee, WI in
- 1:02:37Wata Watusa East High School at 247.
- 1:02:41He was a three star. Lot of offers though.
- 1:02:44A lot of offers all over the country.
- 1:02:46Places like Arizona, Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan State,
- 1:02:50even our neighbors to the West of me and Brian here.
- 1:02:53UVA made his offer and he roughly was about an 86.
- 1:02:58One of the top ten players in Wisconsin and he graded out.
- 1:03:02Let me go look at it here. Shelton dropped this just a few
- 1:03:04minutes ago to me at a 70.5 as their right tackle.
- 1:03:10That was about all they had to write home about when it came to
- 1:03:12the offensive line. Because when Brown, when you
- 1:03:14broke their stuff down, not only as we were watching it here, but
- 1:03:17as you watched a little extra tape.
- 1:03:20Not great, Bob. Yeah, I mean, they struggled to
- 1:03:23establish the run against Fresno.
- 1:03:24They really couldn't get anything going.
- 1:03:25You know, like we said, Ma could be hit that one chunk play.
- 1:03:29I think there was one other good run by their other running back
- 1:03:33that got them in the end zone one time.
- 1:03:35But after that, there was a really a whole lot to write home
- 1:03:38about in the running game. They didn't give up any sacks.
- 1:03:41They had a ton of pressures, made it really hard for car to
- 1:03:44truly settle, settle in and cook against that Fresno State
- 1:03:47defense. Definitely the biggest weakness
- 1:03:49on the team and they played multiple centers like I was
- 1:03:53alluding to earlier against Fresno.
- 1:03:55I think they had three centers play in that game.
- 1:03:57So that's something to keep an eye on because rotating 3
- 1:04:01centers is not an ideal scenario to have.
- 1:04:06No, not at all. Not at all.
- 1:04:09But to be honest, let's talk about Fresno just a second here.
- 1:04:12Fresno did return eight of their eleven starters on the defensive
- 1:04:15side of the ball. Now what?
- 1:04:16They were missing, and I think this is jumped out to me as I
- 1:04:20was doing the research. They were missing their leading
- 1:04:23sack sack creator last year, who got drafted by Pittsburgh.
- 1:04:30So to me, I hear that yes, you return a lot of starters, but
- 1:04:33when a primary edge guy is gone and they're still causing that
- 1:04:36much havoc, still being able to stop that offense in some way,
- 1:04:40there is definitely some holes within the Graham Harrow Air
- 1:04:43Raid offense. All right, we're going to flip
- 1:04:46over to the defensive side of the ball and get to know you,
- 1:04:49Brian. Let's talk about Ryan Walters.
- 1:04:51Obviously at Illinois, he had that defense humming for a
- 1:04:54couple years. What are we taking a look at
- 1:04:57with Mr. Walters defense? Yeah, you're looking at a base
- 1:05:013-4. They will go into a nickel
- 1:05:05package. That's going to be the 335 stack
- 1:05:07like we saw a little bit of against ODU, but their base is
- 1:05:10going to be a 3-4. You know we talked about it
- 1:05:14already, Odd fronts are going to be harder to run inside zone
- 1:05:16again. So we're going to get a little
- 1:05:17bit more of that this week. Hopefully we can make some
- 1:05:19adjustments and handle that a little bit better and they will
- 1:05:24occasionally play with the alignment of the linebackers.
- 1:05:29So in particular, the guy we're about to talk about here in a
- 1:05:32little bit. Well, and that linebacker he is
- 1:05:36talking about is Kydrane Jenkins.
- 1:05:39He is the outside linebacker 6 foot one £260 out of Louisville,
- 1:05:44GA at Jefferson County High School.
- 1:05:47Cadren was a low, low three star 84, the 135th player in the
- 1:05:53state of Georgia back in the class of 2020.
- 1:05:56And believe it or not, his only Division One offer was per due
- 1:06:02lot of G5 offers, and today the truth kind of has already hit
- 1:06:07off the bat in his first two seasons playing.
- 1:06:10Obviously you can see that playing sparishly in 26 games in
- 1:06:13its first two seasons. 67 total tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 9
- 1:06:19sacks, along with a couple past deflections in a forced fumble.
- 1:06:23And he started off good against Fresno State last week.
- 1:06:26Brian 6 total tackles, one sack, an additional tackle for loss.
- 1:06:31He is. I think you'll you'll put it in
- 1:06:35words here. I think he is probably their
- 1:06:37best defender. Yeah, he's a he's a pretty elite
- 1:06:39pass rusher. You know he'll get after the
- 1:06:42quarterback really well. He's not overly impactful in
- 1:06:45space or in coverage. They don't deploy him in that
- 1:06:49very often. He is primarily a pass rushing
- 1:06:51edge defender, but he holds up, holds up on backside containment
- 1:06:56in the run game. So he's not necessarily a
- 1:06:57weakness in the run game. He's just not great in space or
- 1:07:00in coverage. But his pass rushes is is solid
- 1:07:03across the board. He's going to, he'll play with
- 1:07:06his alignment, they'll they'll kind of send him inside, keep
- 1:07:08him on the edge, kind of mix and match him in there with
- 1:07:12depending on whether they go with that stack in the nickel or
- 1:07:14whether they're running out of the the the 3-4 base.
- 1:07:16So he's going to be on the field and getting after the the passer
- 1:07:20regardless. Anything on him, Shelton?
- 1:07:24Were you able to dig up? Yeah, which, which one we're
- 1:07:29talking about? We are talking about Kydron
- 1:07:32Jenkins, the outside linebacker. Jenkins.
- 1:07:36No, I don't have anything on Jenkins.
- 1:07:37I will say though with regards to their linebacking core, their
- 1:07:41MLB OC brothers had a forty grade from PFF last year which
- 1:07:46was the 4th worst among all Power 5 linebackers.
- 1:07:50So we look at the lineback course a whole, the defense as a
- 1:07:52whole. It was not great.
- 1:07:54They got some young players in there, some guys that you know
- 1:07:56turn to different programs where they didn't really excel.
- 1:07:59Obviously as as we talked about it's it's a defense that's
- 1:08:01really work in progress. Alrighty, Who's our next one,
- 1:08:05Tally? We got Markevius.
- 1:08:07Markevius Brown is a cornerback out of high school.
- 1:08:12He came from IMG Academy. He was a composite 4 star that
- 1:08:18started his career at Ole Miss. He had office from.
- 1:08:22Everywhere Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, FIU Had over 20 offers
- 1:08:28coming out of high school, went to Ole Miss and has transferred
- 1:08:32to Purdue Now he is a five 11180 pound quarterback.
- 1:08:40Last week he had I think 9 tackles.
- 1:08:44He was the 2nd leading tackler. Let me make sure I'm telling you
- 1:08:49that right, Brian. I don't want a lot to, you know,
- 1:08:52a lot to be a. Lot to him, he.
- 1:08:53Was the he had nine tacos last week, 1 Taco for loss behind
- 1:09:00another guy that we're going to talk about with Curtis here in
- 1:09:02just a little bit. But yes, seems to be a pretty
- 1:09:05good player. Brian, what you got on him?
- 1:09:07Yeah, he's their best man defender and you talked about
- 1:09:09the offers. I believe we were one of those
- 1:09:11offers in there because I I remember seeing this name a few
- 1:09:15years back on on our list. So has good speed, not afraid to
- 1:09:21be a little physical. You can see that by, you know
- 1:09:24getting getting a pretty good tackle count in there.
- 1:09:27But he can get caught kind of watching the action in the
- 1:09:30backfield, watching the action that kind of is moving in front
- 1:09:35of him. So sometimes that can catch him
- 1:09:37a little bit on aisle and let a man get behind him.
- 1:09:39But overall, good, good cornerback for definitely the
- 1:09:43best pure cover guy that they have in the secondary.
- 1:09:46And I know Sheldon has something he wants to add here as well on
- 1:09:49the step side. Yeah, so it was not good for him
- 1:09:52in coverage against Fresno, he was 8 for 12 when targeted for
- 1:09:5684 yards and a touchdown. So it's kind of a small sample
- 1:10:00size For his career. He just hasn't really had as
- 1:10:02many targets as you know, as a lot of other guys.
- 1:10:06But that's a pretty big red flag right there.
- 1:10:09Well, that does say a lot, but you know, 8 for 12, I mean you.
- 1:10:13You take a look at the data points though.
- 1:10:15Mikey King went 31 for 44. Mikey King's Fresno's
- 1:10:19quarterback, he lift them up for right over 350 yards, 4
- 1:10:24touchdowns and only one pick. So I do think that they have
- 1:10:28more than one hole in the secondary and one of the guys
- 1:10:32we're going to talk about next, which is Dylan Thieman.
- 1:10:36He was the leading tackler last week at this game.
- 1:10:39He had 10 total tackles and an interception.
- 1:10:42Femen, if we take a look just at his background, he was a 87 for
- 1:10:46247. He was a class of 2023.
- 1:10:50So this guy is a true freshman out there at approximately 6
- 1:10:53feet tall, 205 pound out of Carmel IN at Westfield High
- 1:10:56School. So.
- 1:11:00So we talked about Brown struggling.
- 1:11:02They got a true freshman playing free safety.
- 1:11:06Brian, what are you seeing from him?
- 1:11:09And I think we're about to Shelton just did it with the
- 1:11:12stats and we're starting to hear this thing come about their back
- 1:11:16end. Yeah, I mean this guy covers
- 1:11:19ground well. He, he does a good job of
- 1:11:21getting around and flying around making plays when he's able to
- 1:11:24kind of sit back in coverage. He does not do a good job when
- 1:11:29he's any any any sort of man responsibility or having to
- 1:11:32cover in the box. Definitely a guy that just wants
- 1:11:35to be that that that deep free. And and I think that may just be
- 1:11:41the fact that he's a true freshman and if you put him in
- 1:11:44that deep free he can just kind of read and react not a whole
- 1:11:47lot of additional responsibilities.
- 1:11:49So he excels there where what he doesn't excel at is kind of
- 1:11:53pretty much everything else. But he does tackle well if he
- 1:11:56fits up pretty good and gets guys to the ground, but it's
- 1:11:59just a little suspect in the other areas of playing safety
- 1:12:03right now. Yeah, and on him, he had 10
- 1:12:08tackles. I don't know if we said that.
- 1:12:09So between him and Brown, that was 19 tackles, 1st and 2nd
- 1:12:17tackler on the team last week came from your secondary.
- 1:12:21One or two things that throwing the ball on your lot or your
- 1:12:24linebackers and your line are not tackling people.
- 1:12:28Yeah, and Fresno didn't run the ball very well, so it was the
- 1:12:32former. There you go.
- 1:12:34So Speaking of a line, next guy we'll talk about is there big
- 1:12:38nose tackle, You got Cole Brevard, he is a six foot three,
- 1:12:46£333 or £335 nose guard or nose tackle.
- 1:12:52Excuse me, he is. He transferred from Penn State.
- 1:12:57He had big offers from. A lot of places, Florida State,
- 1:13:01Clemson, Notre Dame, he transferred there.
- 1:13:05I was looking, didn't find any stats from last week on him.
- 1:13:08So he's probably just a big gap filler, somebody there to not
- 1:13:13let people RP up the middle like ODU was doing against us.
- 1:13:17So what you got on him, Brian? Yeah, you pretty much hit the
- 1:13:20nail on the head there. And I'll I'll say this before we
- 1:13:22get into the the specifics of his game.
- 1:13:25He was one of those guys, the Penn State transfer where
- 1:13:28everybody on the timelines like we got to get this guy, we got
- 1:13:32to get this guy, he's a pride defensive player.
- 1:13:33We got to get this guy. You know he ended up at Perdue,
- 1:13:38we didn't get him. He ended up Perdue.
- 1:13:41He's a two gap nose. I mean he's he's in that 3-4,
- 1:13:45classic space heater, good motor overall.
- 1:13:50He will get replaced by another guy named Joe Anderson when they
- 1:13:54go to their nickel set, who's more of a pass rush specialist,
- 1:13:59really a defensive end that they kind of just slide into to be a
- 1:14:03a pass rushing nose. But Cole, definitely he he eats
- 1:14:07space. He does a good job of kind of
- 1:14:09taking up two blockers on a lot of plays.
- 1:14:12So he's somebody that you got to handle and like we said we
- 1:14:15struggled to get to the second level.
- 1:14:16We're going to have to be better at that this week against this
- 1:14:18guy. Sheldon, before we kind of close
- 1:14:22it out here, any additional stats, any additional data
- 1:14:26points you're seeing on the Purdue, Purdue defense that we
- 1:14:30should know about that might be helpful to the Hokies going into
- 1:14:35Saturday? Yeah.
- 1:14:36So just looking at their team in general and kind of performance.
- 1:14:39So there's a stack called Expected Points Added, or more
- 1:14:42commonly known as EPA. It's basically like an
- 1:14:44analytically correct version of yards per play, just takes into
- 1:14:47account field position, down distance, et cetera, et cetera.
- 1:14:51So EPA freshman state finished in 90th percentile in EPA for
- 1:14:56games this year against against Purdue.
- 1:14:58Purdue not quite as explosive offensively.
- 1:15:01They did have more yards per play, the bluemakers did, but
- 1:15:04the reason that FFC won the game ultimately was because they had
- 1:15:08a higher success rate, especially on 3rd down.
- 1:15:10They were 60% on 3rd down. So that's an indication probably
- 1:15:14that you know they're they're they're doing well on 1st and
- 1:15:162nd down they're getting easy third down opportunities.
- 1:15:20I would say for those who are Virginia Tech fans who look at
- 1:15:25that result and say Oh well pretty loss of President State
- 1:15:27they must not be all that good. Let's let's hold up for a second
- 1:15:30if. Virginia Tech.
- 1:15:32If Virginia Tech were to play President State on a neutral
- 1:15:34field tomorrow, they would be 4 point underdogs, is my guess.
- 1:15:38So that's that's not a game where you can really say like
- 1:15:42yeah, we're going to beat that team, it's going to be really
- 1:15:44close to match up and if if Attack and Purdue were to play
- 1:15:47in a Nutrifield tomorrow, it would be a toss up.
- 1:15:49So it's not, you know, you can't look at, you can't really read
- 1:15:52too much into that game, really. You really can't.
- 1:15:55And Fresno State was a good team last year, so they were turning
- 1:15:579 guys on defense. They won 10 games last year.
- 1:16:02They in fact they won the Mountain West, right?
- 1:16:05Did I make that up, Sheldon? They won the mountain.
- 1:16:07Or did Boise win the Mountain West last year?
- 1:16:10No, Boise, yes President won the mountain.
- 1:16:12They won the Mountain West last year, so yeah, they are.
- 1:16:16They did play a very good team. So what are the Hokies going to
- 1:16:21have to do to win this game? I'm going to let Brian start us
- 1:16:25out here. Brian, give us one of the keys
- 1:16:28to a hokey victory on Saturday. Yeah, the biggest one is that
- 1:16:33we've got to settle down quicker.
- 1:16:34We can't have that one quarter of sleepwalking that we saw
- 1:16:39against ODU, especially on the offensive side of the ball.
- 1:16:43This needs to be more of a game like we saw with Boston College
- 1:16:48last year at home where we kind of got out there early, made a
- 1:16:51couple plays on defense, made a couple good plays on offense,
- 1:16:55get a little bit of a lead and then kind of put the pressure on
- 1:16:58them to have to play a little catch up.
- 1:17:00I think that's the the recipe for success here.
- 1:17:04All right, Tally, what do you think?
- 1:17:06What's a hokey key? Yeah, I'll say, you know,
- 1:17:08usually I try to be a little bit more conservative, but I'm going
- 1:17:11to let let your nuts hang, you know, let your nuts hang.
- 1:17:16Brett Pry, you have wide receivers that I don't think
- 1:17:19that they can guard. We need to pass to set up the
- 1:17:23run. Looks like we were running to
- 1:17:25set up the pass in this pass game.
- 1:17:27I think hey, let it fly. Find those receipt was early,
- 1:17:31spread them out, take a a page out of ODU's book, spread it
- 1:17:35out, don't have them so close so we can hit some of these running
- 1:17:38lanes. I think if we do that early in
- 1:17:40the first quarter, I think we'll put them in, in in in a little
- 1:17:44bit of a discomfort area fairly quickly.
- 1:17:48Got it. Shelton, what about you?
- 1:17:51For me, the biggest thing is just try to shut down Dion
- 1:17:53Burks. I think he's by far the biggest
- 1:17:55playmaker. I'm not too concerned about
- 1:17:57Purdue's run game. I mean, we'll see how it all
- 1:17:58plays out. But also you you just got to get
- 1:18:01pressure on Hudson Card. I mentioned the pressure stats
- 1:18:03from from their game against Fresno.
- 1:18:05The offensive line has a lot of weak points, so if you get
- 1:18:08pressure on him, Card really, really struggles throwing from
- 1:18:12pressure. If you can get to the key, BI
- 1:18:14think you'll have a you have a really good chance of winning.
- 1:18:16And I think tech will take advantage of a very shoddy
- 1:18:19Purdue defense. I'm with Sheldon.
- 1:18:22I think you don't let Clark find a rhythm.
- 1:18:23We know how Air Raid offenses work is when they get in the
- 1:18:26rhythm. Where they popping you on
- 1:18:27lateral passes? Short, quick routes.
- 1:18:30Eventually it opens up up top and make a move, make a move,
- 1:18:34get him uncomfortable. Apr and the Crew go out there,
- 1:18:38make a move and you said you're not worried about their run
- 1:18:41game, make it non existent. Because an air A-Team like this,
- 1:18:44if they get that little bit of run game going, go back to West
- 1:18:47Virginia. Last year they got that run game
- 1:18:49going. It wore down us and then they
- 1:18:52were able to start popping passes later in the game.
- 1:18:55So kind of a combination of there of a different number of
- 1:18:58things we are talking about for some hokey keys.
- 1:19:01But now it is prediction time. Brian is really excited
- 1:19:04everybody. He's been working on this all
- 1:19:06week. Bring up the big board.
- 1:19:09Not only the prediction for the hokey game, but we also have our
- 1:19:12big screeners here. Hey, y'all better read this
- 1:19:16week. Shit.
- 1:19:16Y'all better read, listen and read.
- 1:19:20Listen and read it's it's on the board this time, guys.
- 1:19:24It's very explicitly. A big board that's not big.
- 1:19:28This is that spread, spread. Do y'all understand how many
- 1:19:34emails in in, in in Dms that I got from people so I could not
- 1:19:40believe even after we won? People were.
- 1:19:44Still talking about they were, they were telling.
- 1:19:46You, man. I can't believe you're the God
- 1:19:47that predicted us to lose. I was like, Oh my God, Sheldon
- 1:19:51had people in his Dm's over taking UVA to not lose by more
- 1:19:56than 28. Yeah, that was fun and.
- 1:20:00Being Bronwyn four and two last week.
- 1:20:02I did horrible. I'm scared to even pick.
- 1:20:05That's the fun of it. That's the fun of it.
- 1:20:07All right, Sheldon, you were not here last week, so you get to
- 1:20:11lead the Hokie Purdue predictions.
- 1:20:14What do you have? It's going to be a close, low
- 1:20:18scoring ball game in my opinion. I like both teams defenses more,
- 1:20:23so a little bit more skeptical of these offense, but I've got
- 1:20:26the Hokies winning 20 to 17. They will cover by the hair on
- 1:20:30their chins. That's just the way I feel.
- 1:20:32I think it's going to be a low scoring grudge match and I think
- 1:20:35tech's going to come out on top. Alrighty low score 2017.
- 1:20:39Tally, what you got? I got the Hokies taking this
- 1:20:43game 35 to 24. I think we only didn't we go
- 1:20:46over 31 time last year 0 * 0 times.
- 1:20:53Well the first two games of the season we're going over 30.
- 1:20:56Baby 3524 Hokie win be we all going to be there.
- 1:21:03Barry The Corner Podcast As y'all can see, I don't have a
- 1:21:06hat on this week. Because I'm I wanted my hair to
- 1:21:09breathe because I'm buying all new hats when I get to
- 1:21:12Blacksburg. So if you're watching this,
- 1:21:14y'all send me places that I can go find cool hats, because I'm
- 1:21:17going to pick up about 5 to 10 new hats and he's getting one
- 1:21:21new one from me. And I already know about that
- 1:21:24way, huh? I already know about that one.
- 1:21:26I'm going to have that one on. I'm going to have that one on
- 1:21:28next week. There we go.
- 1:21:30There we go. All right, my turn next.
- 1:21:32Y'all and I'm kind of with Tally.
- 1:21:35We're we're similar scores here. I think the Hokies are going to
- 1:21:39win this game and I can see this being a 3423 game.
- 1:21:42I think we punch it in just as much as we did last week.
- 1:21:45I think prop pulls back on being aggressive inside the 15 kicks,
- 1:21:49a couple extra field goal and to just be honest, why am I looking
- 1:21:54at a team that scored 35 and saying they're going to score
- 1:21:5624? I watched this game with Brian
- 1:21:58right back here. I'm on the I'm on the I'm on the
- 1:22:00easy chair. Brian's kick back on the couch.
- 1:22:04Effectively, Purdue had two sustained drives to score
- 1:22:07touchdown. They were in a kickoff return
- 1:22:09back. They had the 84 yard bomb tally
- 1:22:11mentioned earlier. The other 44 yard play to
- 1:22:14Burke's. Guess what?
- 1:22:15That set up a 10 yard run. They had two sustained drives
- 1:22:18for touchdowns. That's why the Hokies and the
- 1:22:20defense get it right. Brian, are you as optimistic as
- 1:22:25we are? Yeah, I'm right on board there.
- 1:22:27I've got the Hokey's pulling out A1 score victory here.
- 1:22:31I think the offense is going to keep going.
- 1:22:33I think we're going to pit a little bit and as Tally
- 1:22:35mentioned that let the past set up the run a little bit.
- 1:22:38Kind of start with the the Duts hanging out there and leaning on
- 1:22:42your strength a little bit. I think our defense does a a
- 1:22:45good job of shutting down the run.
- 1:22:47I think we still do lets you know Burks get a little bit of
- 1:22:50action done, but they're not going to quite do what they did
- 1:22:53against a Fresno. I think we're a little bit
- 1:22:55better in the secondary than they are.
- 1:22:57I got a final score here of 3124 Hokies, 3124 Hokies.
- 1:23:05So there we go. We're all picking the Hokies.
- 1:23:07We're all on the optimistic train after the ODU game.
- 1:23:10I hope it holds to fruition. Even though all of us are going
- 1:23:15to be in Blacksburg, we still are putting up the big screeners
- 1:23:19because probably we're gonna be catching some of these, whether
- 1:23:22we're sitting at a hotel, friends houses, maybe the bar
- 1:23:25after the game, but we've got and well.
- 1:23:28Really. That cell service?
- 1:23:29You can pick up a game in the stadium now.
- 1:23:32Is it that good? Now no.
- 1:23:34Don't get your hopes done. You can get a tweet out.
- 1:23:38You can get a tweet out now. So I guess that's better than
- 1:23:42what we've been doing with where you couldn't get a text out.
- 1:23:44So all right, well, let's talk about our big screeners here.
- 1:23:48So the first one here is going to be Mr. Brian selection.
- 1:23:52Brian is looking at Tulane versus Ole Miss.
- 1:23:56This is a 330 kick. So when we potentially could
- 1:23:59catch downtown after the Hokies play Ole Miss.
- 1:24:03Currently 7 1/2 point favorites. What you got on this one, Brian?
- 1:24:08Man, I just like this matchup. I think this is going to be a
- 1:24:11very intriguing matchup across the board.
- 1:24:15You know, I like Ole Miss, but I think Tulane is going to have
- 1:24:20just enough here to make this a really tight when a little
- 1:24:24squeaker down the stretch. So I've got Ole Miss winning,
- 1:24:28but I've got two lane in the seven and a half there.
- 1:24:32So I'll put two lane here on the on the board and Brian, I'm I'm
- 1:24:36right with you on that. I think.
- 1:24:37I think this is going to be a highly entertaining game to
- 1:24:39watch. I think both these offenses can
- 1:24:41move the ball. I do think Ole Miss sneaks it.
- 1:24:44Probably three to six points, but two lane covers tally.
- 1:24:49What about two schools down your way?
- 1:24:51Yeah, I'm going to say Ole Miss is going to go ahead and take
- 1:24:54this 1-2 Lane may have a cool mascot.
- 1:24:58I just don't think they're going to have enough to win or cover.
- 1:25:02All righty, Ole Miss there, Sheldon.
- 1:25:05Yeah, look, Ole Miss put up 73 points against Mercer the other
- 1:25:11day. Now I understand it's Mercer,
- 1:25:13FCS, blah, blah, blah. But I watched FCS football, so I
- 1:25:18feel someone qualified to say Mercer is a good team.
- 1:25:20They've got a good defense and 73 points, 73 points.
- 1:25:23So give me Ole Miss. I'm taking the points by the
- 1:25:25way, when we probably should be looking at on this.
- 1:25:27Go ahead and put Sheldon's up there.
- 1:25:29Ole Miss cover. The Over Under is only 66 1/2 on
- 1:25:34this game. That just seems criminally low
- 1:25:37because Tulane last week dropped 37 in their opening game.
- 1:25:42So there's our bets. But look at the over under 66
- 1:25:461/2. I think we'll probably shoot up
- 1:25:47to 74 game day. All right, let's go out West.
- 1:25:51This is Tally's pick for the week team in his home state.
- 1:25:55Auburn versus Cal. Auburn on the road playing a
- 1:25:581030 game. Tally's going to be passed out
- 1:26:00at the hotel trying to watch this Auburn 6 1/2 point
- 1:26:04favorites. Tyler, what you got?
- 1:26:06Man, I was a little skeptical about Auburn going all the way
- 1:26:09across the across the globe over here to go play Kyle, our new,
- 1:26:14our new ACC mates over there. So I thought this was an
- 1:26:18intriguing matchup. I was very close to taking Kyle,
- 1:26:22but I'm going to take Auburn in that in that matchup.
- 1:26:25I know a couple of guys that's down there playing in Auburn and
- 1:26:28I got to watch them, got to watch that game.
- 1:26:32This weekend they've got a freshman named Jeremiah Cobb.
- 1:26:35If you guys haven't seen him play, he was a four-star out of
- 1:26:40Montgomery Catholic. My first cousin is was his high
- 1:26:43school coach. He is a phenomenal athlete.
- 1:26:46Think he had maybe about 60 yards and a touchdown in this
- 1:26:50past weekend. So Jeremiah Cobb y'all go check
- 1:26:53them out Auburn. I think they're going to take
- 1:26:54this one. All right, Auburn takes in
- 1:26:56cover. Sheldon, what you got on this
- 1:26:58one? Last week, the PAC 12 went
- 1:27:01undefeated in nonconference play.
- 1:27:04Now some people look at that set and say, well, the PAC 12 must
- 1:27:07be back. I would look at that set and say
- 1:27:09regression to the mean is coming.
- 1:27:11So with that being said, the analyst in me will take Auburn
- 1:27:15to give the PAC 12 a little dose of reality.
- 1:27:20Alrighty. Go and put mine up there, Brian.
- 1:27:26I'm with them. I just.
- 1:27:27I know. I know that.
- 1:27:29I heard that's that too. What was it Saturday night PAC
- 1:27:341213 and O 14 and O in play. I just, you know, Hugh Freeze
- 1:27:39coming there. I just don't see that.
- 1:27:41I think Auburn probably gets slow.
- 1:27:46Hold on before I finish my statement here.
- 1:27:49King Leo. Virginia Tech.
- 1:27:56Let me put that one down. I think.
- 1:27:58I mean Auburn. Might pretty good, pretty good.
- 1:28:01Auburn might get to a slow start, but I think eventually
- 1:28:04the talent will take over and I think they will easily cover the
- 1:28:06six and a half. Yeah, I'm right there with you
- 1:28:10War Eagle bitches. I think that, you know, Cal
- 1:28:16scored a lot of points against the Mean Green out there in
- 1:28:18North Texas, but I think that. You know Hugh Freeze is going to
- 1:28:22have a game plan for that. I think there's going to be a
- 1:28:25pretty decently high scoring game and I think Auburn's going
- 1:28:28to cover in the end. So yeah, I'm taking Auburn as
- 1:28:29well. All righty.
- 1:28:31All right, we flipped down to Waco and Shelton's big Screener
- 1:28:35of the Week, although it's going to be going on during the game,
- 1:28:38so he we better have good sale service so Shelton can watch the
- 1:28:42game. Little Screener, Utah, Baylor,
- 1:28:45Utah Rd. Favorite 7 1/2 points.
- 1:28:50Yeah, this is an interesting matchup.
- 1:28:52You've got a Baylor team that just saw Blitz Creek from Texas
- 1:28:55State the other week. They've got a hot shot offensive
- 1:28:58coordinator and head coach that put up 42 points.
- 1:29:01So they were looking for a bounce back season.
- 1:29:03Haven't quite gotten it so far. And then Utah won against
- 1:29:07Florida. With their backup quarterback
- 1:29:09Kim Rising, still out with an injury as he's recovering from
- 1:29:12that that a CL tear. That being said, I think Utah's
- 1:29:15got a really a really well-rounded team.
- 1:29:17They're playing at home. I'll take the Utes to start the
- 1:29:20Season 2 and O alrighty tally, What do you got on this one?
- 1:29:25You don't watch Utah kick Florida's ass all over the
- 1:29:28field. I'm going to take Utah.
- 1:29:30I don't got no analytics. I don't got all the shelve, Made
- 1:29:33it sound cool. I'm just going to say you talk
- 1:29:35of they whoop Florida's ass they did with Florida that Brian.
- 1:29:40I'm I'm sticking with our team here.
- 1:29:43I'm going with Utah. I think Utah is probably one of
- 1:29:46the eight best teams in the country especially once they get
- 1:29:49back to full strength there. I like the way that they handled
- 1:29:53Florida. I was expecting that.
- 1:29:56Yeah I I I picked them last week but I was expecting a little bit
- 1:29:59of a of a tighter matchup they they really handled Florida
- 1:30:02pretty well. So give me the youths.
- 1:30:07We are in agreement. Again, I'm on Utah on this one
- 1:30:09as well. Lay the seven and a half.
- 1:30:12I think the offensive Utah continues to roll and to be
- 1:30:15honest, Baylor got 31 against the Texas State last week.
- 1:30:21I don't think they're seeing 15 this week 30303017 Utah.
- 1:30:29Alrighty. Oh, I'm up next.
- 1:30:31You're up next. I'm up next.
- 1:30:33I pulled out the Miami versus Texas A and M, which is a 330
- 1:30:39kick which we potentially could watch before we leave Blacksburg
- 1:30:42on Saturday night. Brian.
- 1:30:44Little dinner, Little Tots rail drive back 3 1/2 hours, Top rail
- 1:30:50Tots rail 10:30. I'm 10 minutes.
- 1:30:53I'm 10 minutes away from the field, so I'm you. 10 minutes
- 1:30:55away from the field is Sheldon. Are you driving back Saturday
- 1:30:58night or you staying up? I got drive back, Okay.
- 1:31:02You gotta drive back as well. So we're all gonna have that.
- 1:31:04We're gonna catch dinner together.
- 1:31:05All right. Miami, Texas A and M, Miami four
- 1:31:10point home dog to the Aggies. I go back to the game last year
- 1:31:15where Miami probably should have won down Texas A and M and they
- 1:31:18didn't. And I don't know.
- 1:31:19I just don't believe in Jim Beau Fisher.
- 1:31:21I think he's one of the biggest Vegas coaches out there.
- 1:31:24Yes, I know what I'm just being for real.
- 1:31:27The guy's one of the fakeest coaches out there.
- 1:31:29I don't know if Miami will win, but I think 4 is too much delay
- 1:31:33to give to Miami. Give me Miami with the points.
- 1:31:36I haven't know whose clue is going to actually win the game
- 1:31:38out right, though. All right.
- 1:31:43All right. So we got Miami up there on the
- 1:31:45board. You know what I will shock Y'all
- 1:31:48a little bit. I'm going to A and M here.
- 1:31:56Yeah. I think they getting getting
- 1:31:59Connor Weidman in there. Good first game, 18 to 23236,
- 1:32:04five touchdowns. I know it was the Lobos, but it
- 1:32:07looks like the biggest thing that they had problems with last
- 1:32:10year was quarterback play. If they figured that out then
- 1:32:13that could be a somewhat dangerous team.
- 1:32:15So give me, give me, give me A and M here.
- 1:32:19All righty, Tally. I got to go Miami, man.
- 1:32:22I got to go Miami. I just think that, you know, the
- 1:32:25ACC, we have to prove something this year.
- 1:32:28SEC. You see what Mack Brown did to
- 1:32:30Shane Beamer's face. That's what we're doing all SEC
- 1:32:34opponents all year, just letting y'all know.
- 1:32:38Squeeze, grab, heard round the world.
- 1:32:40Face squeezing, mushing your face.
- 1:32:43Miami. Now that's just what an old man
- 1:32:46does to younger kids. I mean, turn you away.
- 1:32:48Yeah, she'll do you guys. Yeah.
- 1:32:51I know people are gonna say I'm crazy.
- 1:32:53I think that you was back. They totally took Ohio to the
- 1:32:57woodshed last Saturday. I know it's a it's a Mac team.
- 1:33:02But look, that was a time to win.
- 1:33:03So I'm taking Miami. I think they're good football
- 1:33:05team this year. Alrighty.
- 1:33:08Yes. I don't trust.
- 1:33:08I don't trust Jimbo either. There you go.
- 1:33:10See, it's Jimbo. Nobody trusts him.
- 1:33:12All right, there are two more on the screen here.
- 1:33:15One is probably the biggest matchup in the A/C with
- 1:33:18effectively the ACC this week in NC State and Notre Dame.
- 1:33:24And so for this one, Notre Dame, 7 1/2 point home favorite, by
- 1:33:29the way. Ole Miss or or Tulane.
- 1:33:34Home dog. Cal.
- 1:33:36Home dog. Baylor.
- 1:33:37Home dog. We got nothing but home dogs
- 1:33:40here so far. So Sheldon, no.
- 1:33:44NC State. Notre Dame.
- 1:33:46Who is your pick? Yeah, I'm taking Notre Dame, but
- 1:33:51not with the hydrogate of confidence.
- 1:33:52I just like Sam Hartman. He's a stud man.
- 1:33:55I mean, he's just lit up Navy. I know Navy's got some issues,
- 1:33:57but that was a dominant performance.
- 1:33:59NC State. I feel like the other team that
- 1:34:02just kind of, you know, always falls flat in big games.
- 1:34:04So I'll take. I'll take Notre Dame.
- 1:34:08You got Tally. Yeah, I'm going to take Notre
- 1:34:10Dame in this game as well, just like Sheldon said.
- 1:34:12I've been watching Sam Hartman for a long time.
- 1:34:16Kids are stubbed, man. I just think that they'll.
- 1:34:19I wasn't too impressed with a North Carolina State last week.
- 1:34:22I mean, every week is different, but I'm going to take Notre Dame
- 1:34:24in this one. I'm with exactly what Tally said
- 1:34:27right there. Watching NC State play UConn up
- 1:34:30in Hartford, they did not look good, especially on the
- 1:34:35offensive side of the ball. I think the defense is going to
- 1:34:38be solid, but y'all just mentioned they have Sam Hartman,
- 1:34:41they have weapons, they have a better offensive line.
- 1:34:43And I think 7 1/2 is just enough points to take because I think
- 1:34:47this is like a 10 point game. Probably entertaining.
- 1:34:49Ain't going on while the Hokies are playing, but I can't see NC
- 1:34:53State. He's keeping quite up with Notre
- 1:34:58Dame. Yeah, I'll finish this one out
- 1:35:01and say I'm right there with everybody here.
- 1:35:04Some of the same reasons. Sam Hartman I think is going to
- 1:35:07be one of the Heisman finalists this year.
- 1:35:12I think he's got that level of play with with the with the
- 1:35:16offensive line play that Notre Dame has, with the weapons that
- 1:35:18they have. I think he's going to really be
- 1:35:20in play for that that trip. So give me Notre Dame.
- 1:35:25I I think it's going to be about a 10 point victory for Notre
- 1:35:28Dame. Alrighty and well, the big one
- 1:35:31is Saturday night down in Tuscaloosa, AL, Texas.
- 1:35:37Game day's obviously going to be there and it is a big game.
- 1:35:39I mean, we are college football fans.
- 1:35:41We we're not just sitting here and going to crap on things
- 1:35:44because that is a big game. It was a big game last year,
- 1:35:46high noon down to Texas, where that turned into a game that
- 1:35:51Texas just about got Alabama. Now in this case, Tuscaloosa.
- 1:35:55Only a 7 point favorite is Alabama, who's coming off a I
- 1:36:00mean it's it's technically a thrashing, but it took a while
- 1:36:03to get them going versus Middle Tennessee State.
- 1:36:06Brian Who are you taking in this game with the points?
- 1:36:12Yeah, I think this is kind of a nobrainer.
- 1:36:14I think Texas, you know, we saw that slow start.
- 1:36:17They don't have a dynamic player like B John Robinson in anymore.
- 1:36:21I really think that Alabama's going to take this one over.
- 1:36:24Start to finish. Give me Bama Texas Horns down
- 1:36:33penalty sportsman like conduct on Siegler. 15 yards.
- 1:36:38I'm actually right there with you, Brian.
- 1:36:42I just don't trust Texas. I don't.
- 1:36:45And it's not so much their offense.
- 1:36:47I just think they're going to be sort of.
- 1:36:49I just feel like you talk about Bijan being there last year and
- 1:36:52remember they still it was still more of a 2320 type game down in
- 1:36:57Austin last year. I just don't trust their
- 1:37:00defense. I don't and I know yes, they won
- 1:37:03like 37 to 10 last week, but who are they playing?
- 1:37:07We were trying pieces of that game.
- 1:37:09Rice. It was Rice 18, Daniels 60 year
- 1:37:13who was supposed to be a great quarterback coming out as it
- 1:37:15Rice right now. And they got throttled by Texas.
- 1:37:19Not a big start, but give me Bama, give me the 7th.
- 1:37:23I think it'll probably be an entertaining game, but I I can't
- 1:37:26see Texas winning this one we're covering.
- 1:37:29Yeah, I got Texas covering. Actually, man, I don't know if
- 1:37:32they will actually win. Fuck it.
- 1:37:35I'm gonna say Texas wins a close one.
- 1:37:39Alabama is a little bit, you know, they're a little different
- 1:37:41this year. I know they've got some.
- 1:37:43They've got some injuries on the back end that some of the fans
- 1:37:45have been talking about. I'm not sure.
- 1:37:47Of the names, if you go look them up, I'm sure you can find
- 1:37:50it. They got a couple of injuries
- 1:37:51there. They got a wire to see what it's
- 1:37:52been out that they're waiting on.
- 1:37:54I think he's got a hip something going on with his hip and
- 1:37:57Alabama just they're always going to be a good team.
- 1:38:00But I don't think they have a star power that they they
- 1:38:02usually have. You know they're breaking in a
- 1:38:04new quarterback and he didn't have to do shit for real last
- 1:38:07week because they were fundamentally Middle Tennessee
- 1:38:09state. I think just what Texas have in
- 1:38:13athletes that can be on the field against them.
- 1:38:16It's gonna be a little bit of a different look.
- 1:38:18So I'm gonna give it to Texas. I'm gonna say Texas wins a close
- 1:38:21one. Texas wins a close one.
- 1:38:25Sheldon closes out with our big Screener here.
- 1:38:29Brian put tallies up. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:38:34Hard to bet against Nick Saban. I mean, I actually think Texas
- 1:38:37was a good team last year that got really unlucky.
- 1:38:40You know, the Alabama game was a perfect example.
- 1:38:42Like they had a feeling like it breaks.
- 1:38:43They were at home though. They had to win at their back
- 1:38:45and lost a close game. I just can't go against Nick
- 1:38:48Saban at home. I feel like this is type of the
- 1:38:50game where, you know, Alabama's up by 7:00 late in the third
- 1:38:53quarter and then they end up winning by 24.
- 1:38:55That's just, that's just how I look at it.
- 1:38:56So I'll take, I'll take them And the points.
- 1:39:00Taking them and the points. So Brian says the graphic he was
- 1:39:05working with froze up there. Still good.
- 1:39:08We're agreeing on a lot of things.
- 1:39:10Boys, has anything broken since we fired Twitter or since we've
- 1:39:16been on here? Well, for me, for me and Brian,
- 1:39:19Christian Wood is a Laker for two years.
- 1:39:22Who's Christian Wood? Hey.
- 1:39:23Christian Wood is a is a big man that played for The Mavericks
- 1:39:27and he's going to be a good backup to bring in.
- 1:39:31When we need a D to have a little rest.
- 1:39:33So all my Laker fans are pretty excited about getting getting
- 1:39:38him over there with the Lakers. We needed some youth.
- 1:39:41All right, real quick, this is not on the rundown, but I just
- 1:39:44want to get y'all. Just gut opinion.
- 1:39:47Most telling story of the college football weekend.
- 1:39:50Sheldon you. Tell me this upcoming weekend.
- 1:39:54No, no, no. Last weekend.
- 1:39:56Last weekend? Just a lot of craziness, I mean.
- 1:40:00I don't. I think one thing I'd I'd be
- 1:40:03interested to see is like do we have a truly elite team this
- 1:40:06year because Georgia they didn't always upgrade against UT
- 1:40:09Martin. You know Bama had Bama had some
- 1:40:12struggles. I just don't know if there's
- 1:40:16like a like a you know, Megatron, Death Slayer, you
- 1:40:19know, 3000 like we had like Georgia last year, Alabama in
- 1:40:222020 or Clemson 2018. I just, I don't think you have
- 1:40:26that truly elite, you know, championship level team.
- 1:40:29We're going to find out soon, but I I think this could be a
- 1:40:32situation where there might be a little bit more parity at the
- 1:40:34top in 2023. But we'll see.
- 1:40:39So I'm on, I'm on, I'm on, I'm on, hit on a couple of things,
- 1:40:44but I'm going to try to make it quick.
- 1:40:46Number one, and I think we've seen the end of Clemson's
- 1:40:51dynasty or whatever they had going on.
- 1:40:54I don't think that they will be as elite as they have been in
- 1:40:57the past, partly because their coach.
- 1:41:01Doesn't like to use the transport portal And then also I
- 1:41:05just think that with the transport portal and how college
- 1:41:11football NIL is today, there's stuff more spread out.
- 1:41:15You're seeing some some elite talent at other places.
- 1:41:19Case in point, I'm going to bring up Colorado.
- 1:41:22I mean, Jesus Christ, everybody's eyes was glued to
- 1:41:26that game. I think some people will put a
- 1:41:29little bit more stock into it than they probably should.
- 1:41:31But for Dion to go out there and do what he did, I think they
- 1:41:34made one last one game last year to have that much height.
- 1:41:38He's on every commercial that I've seen, his boys was playing
- 1:41:43super hard. They're ranked now.
- 1:41:44So just the the first week of college football to see Clemson
- 1:41:49go down and Colorado to win in the fashion that did.
- 1:41:53Man, college football was back. Segal.
- 1:41:57The death of the new spring church mafia, that's what.
- 1:42:02That's what's happening this year.
- 1:42:05That's what's happening this year.
- 1:42:07We are seeing the the return of Clemsoning.
- 1:42:11We are. We are seeing the return of a
- 1:42:15team that did not adapt with the times by pure, pure hubris.
- 1:42:22By Dabo Swinney. I think we're seeing that the
- 1:42:25chickens are coming home to roost a little bit.
- 1:42:27This is going to be a rough year for the Clemson Tigers overall.
- 1:42:31I'm not saying they're going to win like five or six games, but
- 1:42:34I mean they could easily take three or four losses this year
- 1:42:38easily. Please, I hope they do all
- 1:42:39right. Y'all had all your fun with
- 1:42:41Clemson. I'm I'm going to look on a
- 1:42:42little bit different. Florida State is for real.
- 1:42:45They may not be a wrote it down here Megatron Death Slayer 3000.
- 1:42:50Yes, that's the first. That is the phrase anytime the
- 1:42:54team we're going to refer to is that.
- 1:42:56But I think what they did in the second-half to LSU says a lot.
- 1:42:59LSU is a good team and I this is where you know Tally you
- 1:43:03mentioned the SEC. I swear to God, I I I turn on
- 1:43:06Monday morning. Well they didn't have their
- 1:43:09starting defensive tackle. You lost by 24.1.
- 1:43:12Starting defensive tackle ain't making up 24 points.
- 1:43:14It might be a 2 score game. It ain't going to make up 24
- 1:43:17points. So shut you stinking mouths
- 1:43:19about that. I think FSU is bad.
- 1:43:21Back I hope, man. We are rolling going into there
- 1:43:25in week six. I really do.
- 1:43:27Just because you know you always want to.
- 1:43:29Stack make it look respectable, man.
- 1:43:31Just, yeah. Again, I don't have any.
- 1:43:32I already said that's going to be a.
- 1:43:34If it's only 24 points, then this make it look we played as
- 1:43:38good as the number five team in the country.
- 1:43:41Man, I want to win, don't get me wrong.
- 1:43:43Stop, stop. Don't get him going.
- 1:43:45Preseason rankings. We'll be here 30 minutes.
