- 0:01The Vedic Rishis described a change in conscious awareness as
- 0:05representing Satyam, Rutham, Brihat, the Truth, the right,
- 0:12the vast. It is difficult for most people
- 0:16living in the modern world to gain a conception of the
- 0:19vastness of existence. We may know intellectually that
- 0:24the universe is large. We may know that the world from
- 0:28our individual perspective is large, but the sense of
- 0:32Infinity, the sense of unending wideness, is missing as we
- 0:38remain circumscribed by the limits of our daily life and the
- 0:42frenetic pace of interaction that occurs within that life.
- 0:47Few are the times or occasions when an individual is able to
- 0:51extract himself from the hustle and bustle of daily life and
- 0:56focus his attention on the vastness that automatically
- 0:59widens his consciousness and opens it up to the direct impact
- 1:06of the universal forces. In the days of the Vedic Rishis,
- 1:12there was not a pervasive and overwhelming buzz of
- 1:16electricity, artificial lighting, and constant
- 1:20vibrations of sound of television, radio, Internet,
- 1:24fluorescent lights, billboard signs, motor vehicles, et
- 1:28cetera. They could sit quietly in nature
- 1:33and naturally observe the stars, the ocean, the mountain ranges,
- 1:40and thereby open themselves to an experience of nature.
- 1:45Until an individual has an actual experience of that vast
- 1:49consciousness, it remains purely a mental concept and does not
- 1:55thereby create the necessary status of consciousness for the
- 1:59kind of direct connection that is described by the Rishis.
- 2:04The First Nations people of North America have a tradition
- 2:08for those with a calling to go on a vision quest.
- 2:12Typically, they go out alone into the wilderness to commune
- 2:17with nature, to experience a touch of the infinite expanse of
- 2:21the universal creation and to let the day-to-day life slip
- 2:26away so they can experience a deeper realization and
- 2:31understand who they are and why they are alive.
- 2:37If one takes the time to travel to isolated places, to the
- 2:42mountains, to the ocean, to a great old growth forest and
- 2:48observes the night sky, for instance, there arises within a
- 2:53feeling of unlimited wideness that corresponds to the outer
- 2:57view. One can share in the experience
- 3:01of Infinity, of a timelessness that escapes our normal daily
- 3:05awareness of a beauty that captivates our souls, as one
- 3:11leaves behind the limiting factors that distract us from
- 3:15the greater reality within which we live.
- 3:19Truly, it is said, the day for the ordinary man is night for
- 3:23the sage. Sri Aurobindo describes this
- 3:27sense of wideness and the power of nature in his epic poem
- 3:30Savitri. A legend and a symbol when he
- 3:34writes quote, I know there shall inform the inconscient selves.
- 3:40At one with nature and at height with heaven.
- 3:43A spirit vast as the containing sky, and swept with ecstasy from
- 3:50invisible founts. End Quote.
- 3:54The mother notes quote. But when one has this capacity
- 3:59and his own consciousness. For example, you go for a walk
- 4:03and come to a place which is somewhat vast, like the
- 4:06seashore, or like a great plain, or the summit of a mountain, a
- 4:12place where the horizon is fairly vast.
- 4:15Then if you have this kind of physical instinct which suddenly
- 4:19makes you as vast as the horizon, you have a sense of
- 4:24Infinity, immensity and the vaster you become, the quieter
- 4:31and more peaceful you become. It is enough for you to have a
- 4:35contact with nature like that. There are many other means, but
- 4:42this one is very spontaneous. There is also when you see
- 4:48something very beautiful, you can have the same thing, a kind
- 4:51of inner joy and an opening to the forces, and so this widens
- 4:56you and fills you at the same time.
- 5:00There are many means, but usually 1 does not use them.
- 5:04Naturally, if you enter into contemplation and aspire for a
- 5:08higher life and call down the forces from above, this
- 5:14recuperates your energies more than anything else.
- 5:18But there are numerous methods. End Quote reference.
