- 0:04Speaker 1: for a radio audience tuning in here in Mississippi at

- 0:14Speaker 1: podcast at iHeartRadio and Amazon Music, as well as the
- 0:17Speaker 1: Conversations Radio Network. We're glad you all could be with
- 0:19Speaker 1: us as well. This is part of a music and
- 0:21Speaker 1: youth segment here at WYED. We're now into fall, and
- 0:24Speaker 1: you may feel like you're checking off all the right things.
- 0:27Speaker 1: You're tracking your sleep, you're counting your steps, and even
- 0:30Speaker 1: taking care of your skin. But what about your eyes? Itchy,
- 0:34Speaker 1: irritated eyes are often blamed on seasonal allergies, but they
- 0:37Speaker 1: can also be signs of dry eye disease. That's why
- 0:40Speaker 1: we're real excited about our next guest, Dr. Ina Lazarus,
- 0:42Speaker 1: joining us today. She's going to talk to us about
- 0:44Speaker 1: especially the importance of eye health, but also how we
- 0:47Speaker 1: can make it part of our wellness routine, as well
- 0:50Speaker 1: as what we should know about those recurring symptoms that
- 0:52Speaker 1: may be telling us something about than when it comes
- 0:54Speaker 1: to seeing an eye doctor as well.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Dr.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Lazar, thank you so much for the time. I really
- 0:57Speaker 1: appreciate it.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Thank you so much for having me.
- 0:59Speaker 1: This is a really important topic, Dr.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Lazar.
- 1:02Speaker 1: I think we do not pay enough attention to our eyes,
- 1:05Speaker 1: but why should eye health be part of our overall
- 1:07Speaker 1: wellness routine?
- 1:08Speaker 2: Absolutely. While wellness conversations increasingly focus on skin, gut health,
- 1:14Speaker 2: hormonal health, eye health is often treated as an afterthought.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Despite the burden irritated eyes can place on everyday activities.
- 1:22Speaker 2: And what we find in our practice is that people
- 1:25Speaker 2: are much faster to recognize damaged skin barrier than they
- 1:29Speaker 2: can recognize their dry eye symptoms.
- 1:32Speaker 1: So many people may assume then their eye irritation is
- 1:35Speaker 1: caused by allergies. I hear that all the time. When
- 1:37Speaker 1: should they consider that it could be actually dry eye, Dr. Lazar?
- 1:41Speaker 2: I agree with you. Allergies and dry eye disease can
- 1:46Speaker 2: have very similar symptoms. meaning itchy eyes, irritated eyes. In fact,
- 1:51Speaker 2: in a recent study by Bausch and Lomb, 41% of
- 1:55Speaker 2: patients with dry eye disease thought they were having eye allergies,
- 1:59Speaker 2: and one in four, 28%, actually tried treating their dry
- 2:04Speaker 2: eye with over-the-counter allergy medication.
- 2:07Speaker 1: So you brought up over-the-counter, and that's one of the things,
- 2:10Speaker 1: of course, that we normally think about, but When are
- 2:13Speaker 1: over-the-counter treatments no longer enough and when should we then
- 2:17Speaker 1: go ahead and see an eye doctor?
- 2:18Speaker 2: Yes, so absolutely. You may already be using artificial tears,
- 2:22Speaker 2: but these drops only provide a temporary relief and you
- 2:26Speaker 2: find yourself using them over and over again. And if
- 2:31Speaker 2: these symptoms keep coming back, you may need a prescription
- 2:35Speaker 2: eye drop that works differently, which is why I partnered
- 2:39Speaker 2: with Bausch & Lomb today to speak to you about
- 2:42Speaker 2: prescription eye drops that treat signs and symptoms of dry eye. Zydra,
- 2:47Speaker 2: also called the Fergrast Ophthalmic Solution 5%, targets the key
- 2:52Speaker 2: source of inflammation that causes dry eye. And Mybo targets
- 2:57Speaker 2: directly too much tear evaporation, which is the number one
- 3:01Speaker 2: cause of dry eye. Both drops have been shown in
- 3:04Speaker 2: clinical studies to improve dry eye signs and symptoms with
- 3:09Speaker 2: continued use. And I always tell my patients it's important
- 3:12Speaker 2: to know the side effects for any medication. And for Zydra,
- 3:16Speaker 2: it's eye irritation, discomfort, blurred vision. And Mibo, it's blurred
- 3:21Speaker 2: vision and eye redness. Talk to your eye doctor which
- 3:25Speaker 2: treatment may be right for you and visit Zydra.com and Mibo.com
- 3:29Speaker 2: for full safety and prescribing information.
- 3:33Speaker 1: We're going to link both of those sites up, Dr. Lazar,
- 3:36Speaker 1: for our audience. I do want to ask you, though,
- 3:38Speaker 1: when people hear dry eye disease, I don't think they realize,
- 3:43Speaker 1: of course, what can be the cause sometimes, but why
- 3:46Speaker 1: is it important to understand the underlying cause of dry
- 3:49Speaker 1: eye disease?
- 3:50Speaker 2: Yes, absolutely, because common risk factors could be contact lens
- 3:55Speaker 2: wear and prolonged screen time and screen use, certain medications
- 4:01Speaker 2: such as antihistamines, retinoids, like Accutane and antidepressants. But other
- 4:07Speaker 2: risk factors could be environmental. For example, people that live
- 4:11Speaker 2: in low humidity, aging, hormonal changes, like during menopause. In fact,
- 4:17Speaker 2: women are twice as likely to develop dry eye disease.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Well, it's great to know that there are options that
- 4:23Speaker 1: our eye doctor can be able to help us with.
- 4:25Speaker 1: But what are your top tips, Dr. Lazar, for protecting
- 4:27Speaker 1: your eye health when it comes to not only this season,
- 4:30Speaker 1: but also throughout the year?
- 4:31Speaker 2: You know, the routine eye exam is such a good start.
- 4:35Speaker 2: And talk to your eye doctor if you are experiencing
- 4:38Speaker 2: dry eye symptoms. I would like for everyone to include
- 4:43Speaker 2: eye health into their everyday wellness routine.
- 4:46Speaker 1: So, again, that's why.
- 4:47Speaker 2: And always visit mygo.com and mygo.com.
- 4:51Speaker 1: I appreciate that. Again, it's great information for our audience, Dr. Lazar,
- 4:55Speaker 1: and that's why we're so glad to have you with us.
- 4:57Speaker 1: We're going to be linking both of those websites for
- 4:59Speaker 1: our audience.
- 5:00Speaker 2: And, Dr.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Lazar, it goes without saying, you're welcome back here anytime.
- 5:02Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to speaking with you again.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Thank you so much for having me. Have a great day.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Thanks to you as well. And we thank your audience
- 5:08Speaker 1: for tuning in to another great segment of Conversations Live,
- 5:11Speaker 1: again part of our music and youth segment here on
- 5:13Speaker 1: our program. Until next time, I'm your host, Cyrus Webster,
