- 0:00Speaker 1: Great per flick with Ben Aisha.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Never had a bad experience with the bank. Well, this
- 0:07Speaker 2: guy took his complaint just a little too far. Starring
- 0:10Speaker 2: Al Pacina, dead Man's Wise, based on an unbelievable true story, Ben,
- 0:14Speaker 2: what's the first thing people should know about this movie?
- 0:17Speaker 1: The first thing they should know is it's the opening
- 0:19Speaker 1: film of the Revelation Perth International Film Festival, which kicks
- 0:23Speaker 1: off next week. And it's pretty renowned for having a
- 0:26Speaker 1: selection of films that are a little bit left of center,
- 0:29Speaker 1: a little bit unusual, and this one is the absolute
- 0:32Speaker 1: perfect film to kick off the festival. And as you
- 0:35Speaker 1: point out, it's based on this amazing true story. Back
- 0:39Speaker 1: in nineteen seventy seven, there was this bloke, Tony Kurtzis,
- 0:44Speaker 1: who was a businessman in Indianapolis, and he took a
- 0:48Speaker 1: loan out from a mortgage broke up for a plot
- 0:51Speaker 1: of land that he had a deal in place to
- 0:54Speaker 1: put a shopping center on this land. This was going
- 0:56Speaker 1: to be his big break as far as business was concerned,
- 1:00Speaker 1: but then he fell behind in his payments, he defaulted,
- 1:04Speaker 1: and the mortgage company ended up taking possession of the land.
- 1:07Speaker 1: And he believed that this mortgage company had predatory lending
- 1:12Speaker 1: tactics that deliberately set him up to fail so they
- 1:15Speaker 1: could get this land. And so what he did in
- 1:18Speaker 1: real life was he went to the office of this
- 1:21Speaker 1: mortgage company and so he ended up holding this guy
- 1:25Speaker 1: hostage for sixty three hours while he came up with
- 1:29Speaker 1: this list of demands, which included a formal apology from
- 1:33Speaker 1: the mortgage company, and he wanted the money that he'd
- 1:35Speaker 1: lost paid. And this made national news in America at
- 1:38Speaker 1: the time, and he became a bit of a bit
- 1:41Speaker 1: of a folk hero to the you know, everyday people,
- 1:44Speaker 1: or sort of like almost like a Robin Hood sort
- 1:46Speaker 1: of character. He was, you know, sort of taking from
- 1:49Speaker 1: the rich and giving to the poor. In this case,
- 1:51Speaker 1: he was the poor. So it's a stunning true story
- 1:54Speaker 1: that they've turned into this movie.
- 1:55Speaker 2: What's Alpacina?
- 1:56Speaker 1: Like?
- 1:56Speaker 2: Does he steal the shop?
- 1:58Speaker 1: Look? Look Alpacine? Know is he's getting on a bit
- 2:02Speaker 1: And in this film he plays he plays the guy
- 2:04Speaker 1: who owns the mortgage company. He's okay, he's pretty hammy
- 2:08Speaker 1: in this film, I have to say. And there's also
- 2:10Speaker 1: a radio DJ in there. Smiley Say cameo film played
- 2:15Speaker 1: by played by Coleman Domingo. Yes, and in real and
- 2:18Speaker 1: in real life this is a fascinating thing. In real life,
- 2:21Speaker 1: he didn't really want to communicate with the police because
- 2:23Speaker 1: he didn't think they were on his side. So instead
- 2:25Speaker 1: he called into the local radio station and and did
- 2:29Speaker 1: a lot of the negotiating through the DJ who put
- 2:32Speaker 1: the who put the phone calls through to air and so,
- 2:36Speaker 1: which is which is part of the reason why he
- 2:38Speaker 1: became a bit of a hero to a lot of people.
- 2:41Speaker 1: And of course you're going to have to watch the
- 2:42Speaker 1: film to find out how it ends.
- 2:44Speaker 2: And finally, out of five chop Tops seventy are you
- 2:46Speaker 2: giving dead Man's Wire?
- 2:48Speaker 1: Ben, I'm going to give this a very solid three three.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Out of five chop Tops.
- 2:53Speaker 1: That's it.
- 2:54Speaker 2: A strong recommendation from Ben Benoho always great to catch up.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Join the Smiley.
- 2:58Speaker 2: We'll do it again next week.
