- 0:00Speaker 1: So I have many stories about Rome. This break will
- 0:03Speaker 1: be food related because Adam requested that.
- 0:07Speaker 2: I was the pope by the ways better I know.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Did you did you have dinner with him?
- 0:12Speaker 3: Or no? We didn't. You didn't you didn't get to
- 0:14Speaker 3: Kisch the Ring No, okay.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Vatican Insistine Chapel is another story. We'll do that some
- 0:19Speaker 1: other time, all right.
- 0:20Speaker 4: But for food.
- 0:22Speaker 1: So, in planning this trip, Joe took care of all
- 0:26Speaker 1: of the travel stuff like the airline tickets in the hotel. Yes,
- 0:31Speaker 1: and then I was in charge of tours and planning food.
- 0:36Speaker 1: And I did that because then I could plan the food.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Yeah, so you wouldn't get anything strange.
- 0:42Speaker 1: So I thought the first day we were there would
- 0:45Speaker 1: be a good time to do a food tour. It's
- 0:47Speaker 1: a great way to get to Noah City and also
- 0:49Speaker 1: maybe discover some restaurants you might want.
- 0:51Speaker 4: To eat out along time.
- 0:52Speaker 3: How do you do a food tour?
- 0:54Speaker 4: Do you sign up for? There's all kinds of tours.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Really, something already planned out. Ye.
- 0:59Speaker 4: And our guide Immanuel, he's very good. Yeah, Oh, he's
- 1:04Speaker 4: very good.
- 1:05Speaker 3: He knows this food.
- 1:06Speaker 1: And spoke fabulous English. And I said, you know, do
- 1:10Speaker 1: they do they teach you that in school here And
- 1:13Speaker 1: he said, no, your your American entertainment is is a
- 1:20Speaker 1: perfect way to learn a language. I learned it by
- 1:23Speaker 1: watching The Office and Disney movies.
- 1:25Speaker 4: Really, and everybody.
- 1:28Speaker 1: There speaks English, everybody. And he said when he does
- 1:33Speaker 1: his tours, he said, I have people from Germany and
- 1:36Speaker 1: France and China and and he said, I always do
- 1:40Speaker 1: the tour in English because they every everybody language that
- 1:43Speaker 1: everybody speaks.
- 1:45Speaker 3: It just is ubiquitous.
- 1:48Speaker 1: And he is absolutely fascinated with American barbecue, like like
- 1:53Speaker 1: for us going to Italy, he can't wait to come
- 1:56Speaker 1: here and try American barbecues.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Well, what do you tell about the food?
- 2:01Speaker 1: So the food on the food tour was pretty basic.
- 2:04Speaker 1: You know, here's your pasta's, here's gelados, here's your thing.
- 2:07Speaker 4: Well so that was that day.
- 2:08Speaker 3: That was that day. Way you go to place to
- 2:10Speaker 3: place or does he just yeah, it's.
- 2:12Speaker 4: A traveling thing. We had, you know we had.
- 2:14Speaker 3: I thought maybe he just lined up a bunch of dishes.
- 2:16Speaker 4: No, no, and and food tours are great.
- 2:18Speaker 1: I recommend this anytime you're traveling to sign up for
- 2:21Speaker 1: a food tour because you get to know the city,
- 2:25Speaker 1: you get to know different restaurants, You get to know
- 2:28Speaker 1: the local cuisine.
- 2:30Speaker 3: I took a food tour in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Once.
- 2:33Speaker 2: It was all pork chops, if.
- 2:36Speaker 3: You like pork chops, about every place with pork.
- 2:38Speaker 1: And they asked you before the tour, you know, do
- 2:40Speaker 1: you have any food requirements?
- 2:42Speaker 4: And I said, well, I don't. I don't really like cheese.
- 2:44Speaker 1: And I had been practicing how to say no cheese please,
- 2:49Speaker 1: and I didn't have to say that because men speak English. Yeah,
- 2:53Speaker 1: but I also they also don't say, you know, is
- 2:55Speaker 1: there anything you don't like or have allergies?
- 2:57Speaker 4: They say, do you have any intolerances? Tolerances?
- 3:00Speaker 1: Yes, I have an intolerance. So that so that was
- 3:05Speaker 1: the food tour. Now I planned every night's dinner. I
- 3:10Speaker 1: carefully selected these restaurants. I would go to the menu
- 3:13Speaker 1: online and say, oh, there's something there I will eat,
- 3:17Speaker 1: and I booked it. Now, one night I thought, I'm
- 3:21Speaker 1: going to book a Michelin star restaurant, okay, a fine
- 3:25Speaker 1: dining experience, nice mostly for my husband.
- 3:30Speaker 3: How many stars h I can't remember.
- 3:33Speaker 1: I just know it was a Michelin star rated restaurant.
- 3:37Speaker 4: And it's called play Hoo.
- 3:41Speaker 1: And I booked it because there's a tasting menu you.
- 3:46Speaker 4: Can do, or you can order a la carte.
- 3:50Speaker 1: And I noticed on the ala carte menu that there's
- 3:53Speaker 1: something there that I can do and Joe.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Can do the tasting menu, and this will be great,
- 4:00Speaker 4: all right, you'll find his chicken fried steak.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Please.
- 4:03Speaker 1: So we get there and and and we sit down
- 4:06Speaker 1: and we're getting ready to order, and I would like
- 4:09Speaker 1: this from the ola carte menu, and Joe said, well,
- 4:11Speaker 1: I would like to do the tasting menu. Oh, terribly, sorry.
- 4:16Speaker 1: The way the tasting menu works is.
- 4:21Speaker 3: And you couldn't deprive your husband.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Now, when I'm telling my mother Mary Claire this story,
- 4:25Speaker 1: she said, well, that's just too bad he missed out
- 4:28Speaker 1: on the tasting menu, because that's.
- 4:29Speaker 3: How she would have handled.
- 4:33Speaker 1: And I said, no, I.
- 4:38Speaker 3: I asked what you were going to order, Gina.
- 4:40Speaker 4: It was just a pasta dish.
- 4:42Speaker 3: It was just a very red sauce.
- 4:43Speaker 4: Yeah, it was a basic.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Please.
- 4:47Speaker 1: You know it's on the menu for people like me,
- 4:49Speaker 1: like if you bring somebody here, we at least have this.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Let me tell you what the menu for the tasting
- 4:55Speaker 1: This is how they describe it on the menu, A
- 4:58Speaker 1: tasting journey that explores complexity with an eye toward darkness
- 5:03Speaker 1: through unknown flavors, unexplored territories.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Not for you.
- 5:09Speaker 4: They don't tell you what they're gonna bring.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Yeah, you have no life. Exactly it was hot dogs.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Was part of the fun, was Italian hot dogs.
- 5:18Speaker 1: And so I looked at my husband and he did
- 5:20Speaker 1: not think I would go along with this. He said, well,
- 5:25Speaker 1: I guess I'll have to find something on the Ala
- 5:26Speaker 1: cart menu.
- 5:27Speaker 4: No, no, I am.
- 5:29Speaker 3: I am a brain, you brave girl, and.
- 5:34Speaker 4: I will also do the tasting man.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Okay, what was it? Bill?
- 5:38Speaker 1: It was darkness through unknown flavors and mystery and unexplored territory.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Yeah, but what was that?
- 5:45Speaker 2: See? I wouldn't try that tasting menu because that just
- 5:48Speaker 2: sounds too damn pretentious to me.
- 5:50Speaker 3: But here's the you're an A Michelin star restaurant. You're
- 5:53Speaker 3: already pretend that's true.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Here's the thing. Our waiter had such a thick accent.
- 6:00Speaker 4: He would come and explain what he was putting.
- 6:02Speaker 1: In front of us.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Still had no idea what it was.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Ah, even though it was English, no clue. So you
- 6:08Speaker 3: don't know what you ate?
- 6:09Speaker 4: I have no idea. Oh, come on seven courses.
- 6:13Speaker 3: You must have some idea what was what it was?
- 6:17Speaker 1: No mystery, meat, mystery, flavors, mystery, I have no idea.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Are you not proud of me for eating a seven
- 6:29Speaker 1: course meal of something?
- 6:30Speaker 4: I have absolutely knowing how much of it?
- 6:33Speaker 3: Did you just pull the lightly spit into your napkin?
- 6:36Speaker 3: That's a good question.
- 6:37Speaker 1: There was one course that was raw fish. I don't
- 6:42Speaker 1: know what kind of raw fish it was.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Okay, okay, so you know, but give me some idea
- 6:47Speaker 2: what some other the you know what was raw fish?
- 6:50Speaker 2: I mean there was a what a pasta dish?
- 6:54Speaker 1: The raw fish was a slice of raw fish on
- 6:57Speaker 1: a piece of toast?
- 7:00Speaker 2: Did bread with I wouldn't have eaten that either, Yeah,
- 7:04Speaker 2: but I don't.
- 7:04Speaker 1: There were the shapes I didn't recognize, the flavors.
- 7:09Speaker 4: I didn't recognize.
- 7:11Speaker 1: They brought out a bird's nest, okay, with not eggs
- 7:16Speaker 1: or anything in it, with little egg shaped.
- 7:19Speaker 3: A bird nest made out of noodles.
- 7:22Speaker 2: No, like a like sticks with little little and and
- 7:27Speaker 2: you were supposed to eat the eggs.
- 7:29Speaker 3: And what were they?
- 7:30Speaker 4: They weren't eggs. They were little balls of like rice
- 7:33Speaker 4: or something.
- 7:34Speaker 1: I don't I'm just saying, uh, it's p u l
- 7:40Speaker 1: e j o le.
- 7:43Speaker 3: But was it good?
- 7:45Speaker 4: Here's the thing. I enjoyed it.
- 7:49Speaker 1: See and what I figured out. And you're gonna think
- 7:52Speaker 1: this is a ridiculous thing for me to figure out
- 7:56Speaker 1: a Michel at Star restaurant.
- 7:58Speaker 4: Part of that is this, this food tastes really good.
- 8:03Speaker 1: It's not just fancy, no fancy.
- 8:08Speaker 3: I ate food.
- 8:08Speaker 4: I didn't know what it was, and I likes it
- 8:12Speaker 4: except for the raw fish thing.
- 8:15Speaker 1: But I can't tell you what it was. It was
- 8:18Speaker 1: a mystery. I ate mystery food, like little tiny things,
- 8:23Speaker 1: you know, Oh, thank you.
- 8:26Speaker 4: You know the food that they look like on the
- 8:29Speaker 4: beer were they were? They like us tweezers to.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Assemble it.
- 8:34Speaker 3: I'm proud of you. But now let's continue the journey.
- 8:40Speaker 3: Let's keep eating things that you know, I think merely.
- 8:43Speaker 2: I'll bet she went and when she got done, she says, God,
- 8:46Speaker 2: I'm never doing that again.
- 8:47Speaker 1: And I toured darkness through unknown flavors and mystery in
- 8:51Speaker 1: unexpected territories.
- 8:53Speaker 4: I ate seven courses.
- 8:55Speaker 3: Of that, seven courses of darkness.
- 8:58Speaker 4: I ate seven courses of darkness.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Let's continue this. This is a good step. Let's continue that.
- 9:04Speaker 2: I'm looking at this, this restaurant's menu or your websites.
- 9:09Speaker 2: It's really pretentious, really pretentious.
- 9:14Speaker 4: The wine glasses were so delicate. I was afraid to
- 9:17Speaker 4: touch it. I said to John, like, I.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Don't know how they washed.
- 9:21Speaker 4: That, like remembering the bear.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Just throw them away when cousin Richie was polishing the spoons.
- 9:27Speaker 4: It's what it's like.
- 9:28Speaker 3: It's like that.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a fine dining experience.
- 9:34Speaker 4: Seven courses of mystery.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Way to go. We'll get in darkness. Don't forget the darkness.
- 9:39Speaker 2: We'll get you to snails. Eventually we'll get I might
- 9:42Speaker 2: have had you.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Have you may have.
- 9:44Speaker 4: Your little rubbery things at some point, did.
- 9:47Speaker 2: You all snails are? It's garlic, butter and then rubber.
- 9:51Speaker 3: Yeah, that's all it is. Let's look at it this way.
- 9:54Speaker 3: You don't know what you ate. Nope, let's continue that.
- 9:58Speaker 3: You're just gonna just keep and whatever it is.
- 10:01Speaker 1: You're gonna make me go out to dinner with you
- 10:03Speaker 1: or I am, and we're.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Gonna just order for you.
- 10:07Speaker 4: We're gonna look for mystery. It'll be darkness or mystery.
