- 1:29time now for today's episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar. And this one actually
- 1:33hearkens to the Christmas episode that we skip. But the good news is that
- 1:40the Christmas episode is not really necessary to understand this one. If you can
- 1:45understand that that one anyway, but you'll get an idea of what we're talking
- 1:49about. So here from April to fourteenth, nineteen fifty seven is the ming
- 1:53Toy Murphy matter. Hollywood. It's time now for Wow. Good morning,
- 2:08George, Morning Johnny. Remember man loves animals. George. Well, for
- 2:15the second time he talks in wishing a special covering policy other night and we
- 2:19wanted insurance. And for the second time it's disappeared. I hope it's not
- 2:23another singing mouth. I'm afraid it's something worse than articulous canine. I take
- 2:28it away, dog, and I take it you mean a talking dog?
- 2:34Oh No, Bob Bailey and the Exciting Adventures of the Man with the ex
- 2:46Pact expens the Coon America's fabulous freelance insurance investigator Turley Johnny Dollars. I didn't
- 2:57know about mice. I do know about dogs, and I've never heard one
- 3:00yet that could say anything but rough. Well, maybe you haven't. But
- 3:02Michael Murphy had Michael Murphy iron, Mike Murphy vice president of Milford Steele or
- 3:07once he got to do with it. Well, he's the former owner of
- 3:09the articulating canine Gellius brought the dog from him according to this application he did.
- 3:16When did it happen? Number? Three weeks ago? First I heard
- 3:19of it was when Gillis called from New York asking for the coverage. How
- 3:23much insurance does he have? The maximum we'd allow seventy five hundred seventy fives.
- 3:28Oh no, no, joey, is that timely worth my time?
- 3:31I can't make any commission from a small policy anything like that. Why didn't
- 3:36you pay him off and forget it? I'd like to, Johnny, but
- 3:38it isn't that simple. No. No, Since you found his mouse,
- 3:40Gillis thinks you're some kind of a miracle work. No pied pipey, I
- 3:45mean a pie eed something. Anyway, the boys upstairs is he to let
- 3:49you write your own ticket again? Providing yeah, providing you locate the dog
- 3:53or in the avenger? Don't you passed by Gillis? Keep him happy so
- 3:58that he doesn't cancel his other policies. If I can't do either, then
- 4:00you wind up with your regular commission and expense account, which our auditors will
- 4:04check and double check. Hmm, A real sucker bet. But okay,
- 4:10George, you've got yourself a deal hunch account. I had him two eighty
- 4:16five cents cad ray're back to my apartment, had him three twenty six dollars
- 4:20transportation highbred in New York City, including Cads Greater the Establer Hotel. By
- 4:26the time I checked him, change my shirt with eight thirty. I think

- 5:30Maryan had a good many frims, which figured because of her blonde hair,
- 5:32gray eyes, and a few others. Well, yeah, I pressed the

- 7:03to do? Answer a couple of questions? Answer? But didn't that sweet
- 7:08tea of an agent tell you all you need to know? I couldn't.
- 7:12He didn't know anything except that a dog. You haven't you a dog?
- 7:17Is that what you called her to a use miserable coal artist? A dog?
- 7:23Well, isn't that what you've lost, mister Gill? And don't you
- 7:27let me hear you're calling Addy. She's a little lady. If you must

- 7:53unusual name for a canine? No? You think fair? Shows how stupid
- 7:57that she's a Chinese? Yes, the peach andes and being his first owner,
- 8:03name was Murphy. The whole thing moontoy murphy, it fits here to
- 8:07achieve. Uh yeah, Now exactly when did you notice mean toy was in
- 8:15the back and breakfas? Yeah, I left meantoy in here, locked up

- 8:24and mentoy was gone because she was gone. I put all these clusses about
- 8:28it. But the front apartment door was closed. It was somebody's coming here
- 8:33is telling her that it had sense not to close the front door when they
- 8:35left. You're for sure somebody did steal. I don't know, that's the
- 8:39think. All I know is meantime listen, canine animals like he don't grow

- 8:54you're yet movemember? Yes, because she can talk, mister Gillis, can

- 9:26Teeze boy, what television a new show called The Big Shock. The

- 9:50That's the company's potson show. Don't They're gonna open the show with the animals
- 9:56saying that strig And you see, Andy, I was going to take me
- 10:00intoy down there and let us say it and collect the fifty thousand dollars.
- 10:03Fifty thousand dollars. Fifty thousand are often to give for a dog that can
- 10:09say happy. I know, I know, I know. Anyway, when
- 10:16I first heard about this, I remembered Mike Murphy said something to the over
- 10:20year about having a teen nine in his kidney that to talk some So I
- 10:26went over there three weeks ago, and that bottle we had in the paper
- 10:30at that time, no cause it wasn't well, how did you know what
- 10:33was going to be? Miriam toy? How did you know that dress?
- 10:35Dummy? She switching the marry The advertisement think he looks happy. They're the
- 10:39ones that toty happy hollow people in the put nor Met show. Oh,
- 10:43I see you see it? Look about time. I also say that you
- 10:48don't exactly approve a fisher for a son in law. Oh, I wouldn't
- 10:50say that. I don't approve. I don't disapprove it. If she wants
- 10:54my stuff shirt, that's her bingess. You know. Let me play this
- 10:56tape recording for you any of his sweetest little voice this side the time now,
- 11:05then made this with Mike Murphy. All right, I'll talk to me.
- 11:11Now talk everybody, he said, the drawn caninees belie, very good,
- 11:22lie. Now tell me how are you feeding these fine days? David?
- 11:28Yes? There what heavened she saw a cat? Do you think?
- 11:35Oh? Yes, doubt she can talk? Now. I think I'd like
- 11:41to set it with my own eyes. Have you put a man on the
- 11:45Lost and Found columns of the papers? Course? What about the people in
- 11:48this building? Then I had Morris. He's a super put An oper againity.
- 11:52They call him supers in the city. So what's my name? You
- 11:56don't you know? What he had? I had to put a notice in
- 11:58each apartment tell him to be on the look out for her, but so
- 12:01far nobody said a word, and naturally they wouldn't because she's not around here.
- 12:05She's been stolen. Oh no, well, why would anyone want to
- 12:07steal her? They couldn't stolen. Maybe it could have been somebody doing it
- 12:13fight like who yes, like Iron Mike Murphy, you can say nasty things
- 12:18to me, claim and I cheated him out of mean choy. Well did
- 12:22you to kill us? Is there any other possible way she could have gotten
- 12:28out of this role? Well? Several? Oh no, no, no,
- 12:35it hurts me just to think about that. That window window, yes,
- 12:41yes, was that open yesterday? Yes? I forgot to close it.
- 12:50What's down below? There? Nothing? Nothing, nothing but East River.
- 12:58I continued questioning him, making sure he's given me all the facts,
- 13:03and after promising to take him along when I visited Iron Like Murphy, I
- 13:07said, tonight in lest expense account at him five one dollar and seventy cents
- 13:11for care back in my hotel. The next morning, I called Murphy and
- 13:15wangled an invitation to his Long Island home. At exactly nine o'clock, I
- 13:18was in front of the Gillis apartment. Hey, yeah, you looking for
- 13:26me to guinny No, mister Gillets you've seen him? Sure? Sure?
- 13:31When they got to put their breakaface? Oh yeah, I see. Do
- 13:35you pick up the trash and garbage in the apartments every morning? As to
- 13:37my job a senior, what time do you usually hit this for a this
- 13:41tame a time? It's nowt about ten nine o'clock. God, did the
- 13:45Gillises go out for breakfast every morning at this time? All most every morning?
- 13:48What about the day before yesterday? Oh, when the Lulu wanted disappear,
- 13:54he was at the same hour. Huh. Tell me, Morris,
- 13:56do you remember seeing anyone on this floor that? No one who did not
- 14:01have a business to hear? But there was someone I hear, the gill
- 14:05Us of present where you stand, the waiting at the mint. Who was
- 14:07it? You know? Oh? No, I don't know his name.
- 14:09I yeah, yeah, he's such a nicer gentleman. And me carry what
- 14:13I know? Was another president for mister Gillis. I told him they were
- 14:18out for their breakfast and he went away. You still haven't told me who
- 14:20it was for it? Why have a signor who else? Who would to
- 14:24bring a mister Gillis such a pretty box, it's such a beautiful gift.
- 14:28Who else but the gentleman she's soon to marry now that two of yours truly
- 14:52Johnny Dollard and the men Toy Murphy matter o. People in love usually keep
- 15:05on hours, So I wasn't surprised that Morris at Jenna there had seen Million
- 15:07Gillis's pianced outside the apartment of the morning the dog pardon me can I and
- 15:13I disappeared. I think Morris fiss helped went back downstairs with my cat,
- 15:16where I saw the Gillis was walking towards me from First Avenue morning. Sorry,
- 15:22wait, get to Gavin over there. I can come of coffee,
- 15:24but I not let you out to hear you say that. No, no,
- 15:26Mariam, Yes you're ready though, waiting, waiting mister Gillis. And
- 15:31let's got a few things I can't wait to say to mister Iron, Mike
- 15:39Mercy. And I remember Dad, No such I remember. Yeah, they're
- 15:43gonna be ficky around moon. No, I don't think so far. I
- 15:48just thought we might have lunch together twenty one anywhere you like, say,
- 15:50Twelveston, perfect for you them. Oh, according to mister Killers Iron Mike
- 15:58Murphy, he didn't know all that Mentoy was liking. Thought was going to
- 16:02be interesting to see his reactions when we told him the movie Homeless Square to
- 16:06cast a couple of acres near great back the main house with a large two
- 16:08story brick affair with a backroom swimming pool and the camel's behind him. Or
- 16:14Mike pursuit his hobby of raising peganese dog with can Murphy at the camera.
- 16:18Well, given it to lions, Stephen, give you hold the town man?
- 16:22What are you doing out here? Anyway? I came wrong to help
- 16:26mister Dolla. He doesn't know that I had is I wouldn't be able to
- 16:29tell when you're a lion like I can't. Ah, I suppose you think
- 16:33that's funny. Don you know what this man did to me? He stole
- 16:37a wonderful little dog right out from under me now and you stole her back?
- 16:41Or what do you mean? Do you know what time means? The
- 16:45day after you called me on the phone, you saw that ad in the
- 16:47paper. But the next day somebody stole mean toy, and I'm sure it
- 16:51was you. You shan'ty irishman, for are your dirty minded evil or man
- 16:56if half a mind to take a horse with to you for saying, oh
- 17:00you denied. Of course I didn't know you, and you say it again,
- 17:03I didn't it. Listen me failyday. Well I with you when you're
- 17:07in the steel mill and I can whit to know, mister Gillis, remember
- 17:12what your daughter said, Ye back may Patsy, mister Gillis, please let
- 17:18the like come. Tell I am home out over here. When I was
- 17:37over and mister Gillis had a black eye, Am Murphy of b Leody know
- 17:41Jillius and I went back to town the twelve dollars, that's Adam picking after
- 17:45thing, mister Gillis says me to his apartment. I went across town to
- 17:48the twenty one. Marion arrived. We were showing to a table, and
- 17:51I told her as quickly as I could what had happened at the Murphy home.
- 17:53Johnny, you know father is supposed to get excited. I know he
- 17:59knows, and I tried to stop him, but he was. Instead of
- 18:00losing me too, or anything else, especially something stanuous as a fight,
- 18:07well it might prove to be too, believe me. I'll call him a
- 18:11few minutes to be sure. Million This morning, when I was waiting for
- 18:15you to come back from breakfast. I had to talk with Morris, the
- 18:19supermature farmer. Yeah, well I told you all to join us. Johnny,
- 18:26I hope you don't mind. No, hope, of course not.
- 18:30No thanks. Jan's been out all the morning with dad. Oh, hunting
- 18:34for the dog. Yeah, that's fine, any luck? I'm not sure?
- 18:38Excuse? But what did Mars have to say Johnny? Oh, it
- 18:42wasn't important. Don't try lying to meet Johnny Dollar? I know you too
- 18:47well? Are you to it wouldn't have to say no. The morning the
- 18:52dog disappeared, you were a million's apartment. Weren't you well before yesterday?
- 19:00No? For sure positive. I was in my office all morning. What
- 19:03time did you get there? You remember? Yes, we've been very busy
- 19:07lately getting the Big Shock ready for the air. It was about eight forty
- 19:10five. The secretary will swearter than natural. Honey, where are you going?
- 19:14Like a couple of phone calls, you're right back. I called Bill's
- 19:18office, spoke to a secretary and of course he had lied. Instead of
- 19:22going back to the table like at a cab to my hotel, I made
- 19:26a couple of more phone calls and wedding About forty minutes later, Bill Fisher
- 19:30called and asking to meet him at a bar near Rockefeller Center. You like
- 19:33a drake, Johnny oh ranks right now? No, I figured you'd be
- 19:37thirsty. You've been such a busy little boy. What do you mean?
- 19:40You know what I mean? Calling my secretary, then calling the Happy Hollow
- 19:44people to find out whose idea it was to advertise offering fifty grand for a
- 19:48talking dog. Oh. I wouldn't be ashamed of having that idea if I
- 19:51were you. It's a good one, except for one thing. It was
- 19:53meant strictly for the publicity value. Nobody ever heard of a dog that could
- 19:56really talk, so I guaranteed them their fifty five would be safe. Go
- 20:02on. See, it was tough enough getting the Happy Hollow people to put
- 20:04a show on TV in the first place. They really don't have that kind
- 20:07of money. And if they'd had to pay out the fifty grand on top
- 20:11of everything else, well that would be it. We lose their account,
- 20:15I'd lose my job. Ah. So what did you do with mingtoy?
- 20:19Well, naturally, since she could talk, I had to get rid of
- 20:22her. You understand that, don't you. How did you get into the
- 20:26Gillis apartment. That was easy. I'd been there the night before. When
- 20:30I left, I slipped the latch to the door wouldn't lock when they went
- 20:33out to breakfast. The next morning, I went in. I was going
- 20:37to put in that box and carry her out, but she put up such
- 20:40a fussy. Well, I just tossed her out the window into the river.
- 20:45Yes, dollar into the East River. But what can they do about
- 20:48it? After all, mingtoy was only a dog. It wasn't like he
- 20:52was a person, So what could you do about it? I'm not sure,
- 20:56but whatever it is, I hope it's I left him there and walked
- 21:03down sixth all anymore. When I reached the corner of fifty first, I
- 21:06called Marianne and asked her to meet me in a little park somehow, I
- 21:11told her as simply and directly as I could. We kind of funny,
- 21:18isn't it, John? I don't know. Heaven sure, I hadn't met
- 21:25none of this. What ever happened, Dad would still be feeling chipper.
- 21:30I might have been engaged to somebody else, maybe even a nice I like
- 21:34you, and he things like this to happen. I don't know where I
- 21:44just don't know. We were about a block away from her apartment when we
- 21:49heard the end. We watched the turn in the fifty first street, then
- 21:53stu. Then we were running. It's not I know. No, you
- 22:00don't know any such thing. Oh all right, oh all right, now
- 22:03keep back. Gives the man roam for conny. I'm not going in the
- 22:07building. Oh no, they're doing something out there in the middle of the
- 22:10street. There there, oh there, what's happened? That sounds like a
- 22:15little girls caught down there under the street under the lady and the drain piper
- 22:18goes down to the river. Are you sure it's a little girl. I'm
- 22:21not a dog, you kidding? Dogs can't talk like that, like what
- 22:25right, Well, it sounds like she's trying to say something about a dog
- 22:29food being yum yum, yummy. It's your fine man. Excuse me,
- 22:33hey, come back there. I joined the power of water. Man would
- 22:40lifted up a manhole cover and put down a ladder. He didn't make us
- 22:42long under the street. That's a couple of minutes and we'd climbed back out
- 22:47again. Yells us, where is she? Where's still down? You left
- 22:56her? Galla, No, there, she's fine, your back, well,
- 23:00maybe you better look for yourself together. Less back, God, you
- 23:04cad, you just tast comming me. Come on, dolla, come on,
- 23:08Kenny, Kenny, careful. Yeah, don't you worry about me?
- 23:14She said, you just look out here, Yes, sir, I am
- 23:17you can't yeah, yeah, yes, dollar, you're here. Have to
- 23:30hollow dog by George, my George boy, let me go. Let me
- 23:34down here? Where is she? Where's my? That's wy? Hello?
- 23:41Hello you you? Yes, she's under water. Yes, you don't have
- 23:55to stoop down? What's that moon panda? And I'm get puppy, puppy
- 24:07die that little mascal puppy. So that's why she disappeared to have her family.
- 24:19She called me, Papa, Papa, Well you nodding by gallic?
- 24:29Well have I got so the fuck? I guess Menjoy, Yes, yes
- 24:33he must have. Yes, indeed, Papa, listen, Johnny, I'm
- 24:44a game father. I never did tell gillis exactly how Manjoy had been helped
- 24:56out of all he knew was would marry four reasons of her own, and
- 25:00has called off her engagement to Bill Mingtoy has spent a Wigan's dad recovering from
- 25:06her ordeal. And naturally, since Gillis refused to let her appear on TV
- 25:10that night, the fifty thousand dollars went unclaimed and alas the long suffering public
- 25:15has yet to hear the dulcet tones of a talking dog named Mingtoy Murphy.
- 25:22Expense account total including hotel and Sinato's in transportation back to Hardrid two hundred and
- 25:27seventy cents. Yours Truly, Johnny Dollars. Now Here is our star to

- 26:52Welcome back, Howard McNear playing a quirky character. Haven't i've seen that before?
- 27:00But seriously, he always does a good job on that. And I
- 27:06love Johnny's reaction to the guy who threw the poor little dog in the water.
- 27:11But of course they had to give us a happy ending. This was
- 27:15just a pretty light and easygoing Johnny Doller. I should mention that there were
- 27:21two lost episodes between the last week's show and this week's. The two lost
- 27:26episodes episode five hundred and twenty eight The Hollywood Matter, an episode five hundred
- 27:33and twenty nine, The Moonshine Murder Matter, and next week's Well, we
- 27:38actually were missing the following week's program, though after that we go through a
- 27:44pretty nice run through the rest of nineteen fifty seven and into nineteen fifty eight,
- 27:52where only two of the next thirty nine episodes are missing. Well,
- 27:56today's program was a little bit short. We're going to give you a little
- 28:00bonus audio. Bob and Ray were a comedy team over CBS, and they
- 28:07parodied a lot of radio material in the late fifties, and they had their
- 28:11own parody of detective series so this comes from the same era as Johnny Dollar.
- 28:18It's a three minute recording of their Ace Willoughby International Detective sketch from July
- 28:26the one of nineteen fifty nine. I'm now to join Ace Willoughby International Detective
- 28:41as he involves himself in the Marlick Each affair. Well, I never thought
- 28:52I'd be in Marrack Each again. Spot here they call Americ Beach, the
- 28:56last furnace of the far East. Then who had find what I wanted?
- 29:00Here in the marketplace? American? American? Well over here you appear to
- 29:06be a better one, My good man, I have but to drop my
- 29:07bernus a bit. You will see it as your old friend Lieutenant Daucier is
- 29:11the Aziers police. Well it is U Dauce. But I thought this old
- 29:15French policeman is one tough man to kill. Will be We're being watched.
- 29:19Pretend you're buying something from me, all right, Duce arab? How much
- 29:25follow the string of bees, the ones with the different colors? Now listen
- 29:27closely. Here are some papers. You will be known as Peppy Perdue first
- 29:33mate on the Lisbon Queen. That's too much or just beads? How much
- 29:37is that miniature bronze camel with the wrist watch on its next stop, shouting
- 29:41American with people who are watching have left. Nah, you have your orders.
- 29:45Well, I'm to walk at the end of the street of broken noses
- 29:48Americ each house, thend them to go to room six and knock on the
- 29:52door precisely right, sayce, who are we at there? If I knew
- 29:56that, my friend, I'd know a lot. No, Max, No,
- 30:15maybe one of us. Who are you, sir? I'm happy Purdue
- 30:18first mate on the Lisbon queen. I think we're here in dry dark for
- 30:22repairs, you know, papers. Please, he seemed to be in order.
- 30:26Mister Purdue, come in please, nights, Max, go to the
- 30:33other room. He must excuse Max, mister pidue, he cannot express himself
- 30:37too well since the accident. Would you believe he was once Minister of Finance
- 30:42in the old country? Well familiar, yes, then you must also know
- 30:47my colleagues seated over there, Kernique, Schultz and von Oberdorffer. Gentlemen,
- 30:53we have work to do now. We all agreed we can trust mister Purdue.
- 30:59Right, Well, that's certainly a show of good faith. Mister Perdeu.
- 31:03You will see to it that Kernig shoots and run over Darfer board to
- 31:07Lisbon, Queen tonight. I guess three more won't make any difference on ship
- 31:11that size. Good. You will proceed from here to a designated point in
- 31:15the North Atlantic and rendezvous with you both number thirty six. Then you and
- 31:19the others we board the submarine and proceed to sink and harass as many Allied
- 31:26ships as you can. But it's fantastic. This is nineteen fifty nine,
- 31:30all to our advantage, mister Perdue. The element of surprise is on our
- 31:34side, and I'm sending Max with you, so no tricks. Welcome back.
- 31:52They had a very interesting sense of humor. It was an acquired taste,
- 31:56and I don't think I acquired it. But if you get, if
- 32:00you have and you enjoy it, I am very glad. All right.
- 32:04Well on to some listener comments and feedback. Now. James emails in and
- 32:09says, I drive one hour each way to work every day. I love
- 32:15listening to Johnny Dollar podcast. Thanks from an old Kentucky farmer. And we
- 32:21also have another note regarding Johnny Dollar, and this one comes from listener Wale.
- 32:30That's waldash E right and in. First of all, I wanted to
- 32:35thank you for discovering the wonderfully entertaining radio detective shows of the past. I
- 32:39had no idea it was such a huge genre and of such for the most
- 32:44part, high quality. You do a great job with the program's website and
- 32:46enjoy the usual short informationals that accompany them. My first experience was with a
- 32:52Johnny Dollar multi part episodes, and I was immediately hooked. When the multi
- 32:57part episodes ended, I was crushed. I like them much more more than
- 33:00the unit episodes. They are so well done. Suggestion, when the Johnny
- 33:04Dollar programs have run their course, you go right into the multipart episodes again
- 33:07and re rack the whole thing. It's an interesting idea. I would probably,
- 33:14you know, most shows, if I was going to do it again,
- 33:16I would put a significant waight between finishing the show and starting again.
- 33:23But with Johnny Dollar, it's really a little bit different, just because of
- 33:31the fact that we're dealing with a series that ran for a total of thirteen
- 33:39years plus you know, a few hiatuses in the middle there, with six
- 33:45actors appearing on air in the title role. I would probably, though not
- 33:50go back to the first of the serial stories, though i'd probably go back
- 33:55to the beginning and Charles Russell, and also some time for researchers to find
- 34:01new episodes that were lost, but that's several years away and we have definitely
- 34:10some time. But if you did enjoy the serials, I do have some
- 34:14great news for you. Be sure and listen to the first of our listener
- 34:22support campaign, and actually every Sunday during the listener support campaign, we will
- 34:29feature an omnibus version of the Johnny Dollar a Serial Story. And what that
- 34:34means is we'll have all five parts together so you can listen to and download,
- 34:40and this will be part of our listener support campaign and we'll be getting
- 34:45started with that on August twenty fourth, so I'll be listening for that.
- 34:52All right, Well, that will do it for today. We'll be back
- 34:54tomorrow with Dragnet and then next Friday another episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar.
