- 0:08Hey, it is a very special episode of Two Shot Tuesday
- 0:11here. We say this often and we mean it
- 0:13because it's so often is true. My name is Jason Riley.
- 0:16I'm one of your hosts and with me Barry T Nixon, my Co host and
- 0:20really the beating heart of this podcast, wouldn't you say?
- 0:23OK. Well, that's very nice of you.
- 0:26I've often called you the beating heart you have.
- 0:28So I don't know, I guess I got the heart today and that's I'm.
- 0:31I'm returning the table. That's nice of you.
- 0:34Nice of. You know what, we're coming at
- 0:36you a little bit early because the reason we're getting this
- 0:39recording just a touch early is because I will be in once again
- 0:43in Tokyo, Japan for a week. So we'll be missing that
- 0:46recording week, finishing off the filming on this series that
- 0:49I'm very excited, Barry, to bring to you in the hopefully
- 0:53not too distant future. Yeah, I'm excited to watch it.
- 0:55You said it's going to be on prime for our audience.
- 0:58They should keep an eye open for that.
- 1:00Yeah, get ready to get your subscription up.
- 1:01We'll make sure to update our audience when the time comes.
- 1:04But before that, we've got plenty of excitement.
- 1:07Today's episode is dedicated to a story that I had not sent to
- 1:11me, but I discovered it on the Google.
- 1:13And it's from looper.com, where they counted down what they
- 1:16believe are the 10 most rewatchable action movies of all
- 1:20time. And I said to myself, I know one
- 1:22person will be able to verify or or not verify this list, and
- 1:27that's Barry T Nixon. And we should do that live on
- 1:30the show. OK, ready for this?
- 1:32I'm ready. Let's get into it.
- 1:33All right, we got a format around here.
- 1:35And so to kick us off, we always start with shot #1 Barry, what
- 1:39have you got? Jay, I am delighted with Welcome
- 1:42back Jameson Black Barrel. As you know, I was living in a
- 1:45Black barrel desert for some time, but it's back, baby, it's
- 1:49back. Perfect and I am trying out a
- 1:51brand new whiskey that I found at my local called the Whistler.
- 1:55It's an Irish whiskey. Now Whistler makes me think of
- 1:59skiing British Columbia. Yep, the Whistler makes me think
- 2:03of somebody whistling crazily on the street or something.
- 2:06So. Somebody who's inebriated and
- 2:08yes. Exactly and whistling, having a
- 2:10great time. Will this be a great time as a
- 2:12shot? I'm going to find out for the
- 2:14very first time here. Live with you.
- 2:16Perfect. Cheers.
- 2:16Cheers, that is a spring breeze blowing around my esophagus.
- 2:23How about you? Oh boy, that looks chewy.
- 2:26It's a it's an oak cask and I would say this is like an entire
- 2:31dining room table. It's.
- 2:33The whole set, any set chairs included, brother.
- 2:36Yeah, good. It's oak.
- 2:38That's sturdy. I don't love the sturdy wood.
- 2:41It's a sturdy wood, I'll tell you.
- 2:43We'll see how shot #2 goes down. That one is a strong, oaky
- 2:46taste. If you like that, then you might
- 2:48love the Whistler. Available.
- 2:49Your LCBO maybe? All right, should we get into
- 2:52this? The 10 most rewatchable action
- 2:54movies of all time. After that intro, we'd be crazy
- 2:57not to. All right, Barry #10 on the
- 2:58list. John Wick.
- 3:00What is your thought? John Wick one of the most
- 3:02rewatchable? Absolutely 1000%.
- 3:05I would venture to say the all four of them are.
- 3:09Really, what would you say makes it one of the most rewatchable
- 3:11of all time? Just a really tight story and it
- 3:14doesn't overcomplicate matters. It's just a guy seeking revenge
- 3:19and just the body count just piles up and it's beautiful to
- 3:23see. What is it about his dog?
- 3:25There's something about a dog in John Wick.
- 3:27Yeah, his dog is murdered. Oh, is that what sets him off
- 3:29for revenge? That's what sets him off,
- 3:31because it's the last gift his deceased wife gave him.
- 3:35So he has literally no further family after the dog is
- 3:38murdered. And so that sends him out of
- 3:40retirement as a hitman, back into the underworld, and he just
- 3:45doesn't stop. He's like the Terminator, only
- 3:47he's a real guy. It's pretty OK.
- 3:49And does he keep going? Is it the dog that's driving him
- 3:52through all four movies? Or does eventually.
- 3:54No, there's the first one, and. Then the first one.
- 3:56OK, got it. There are other drivers, don't
- 3:58you worry. There's other reasons for him to
- 4:01get to. Oh my God Jay you haven't seen
- 4:03it. Do yourself a favor, just grab
- 4:04it in 4K blind by you'll be happy.
- 4:06All right, well, that's one of the 10 most rewatchable movies
- 4:09I'm going to go to #10 on our list at a 90 minute runtime.
- 4:12Liam Neeson in Taken. He's not.
- 4:15A good one, Yeah. You have seen it.
- 4:17Yeah. What makes?
- 4:18What makes that rewatchable? Well, this is where I'm not sure
- 4:22that it entire because it's the subject matter is very dark.
- 4:25It's about like human sex trafficking.
- 4:27His daughter is kidnapped, sold into sex slavery.
- 4:31Yeah. And he has to.
- 4:33Liam Neeson's character has to, like, track her down.
- 4:35And it's. It's pretty dark, although, OK,
- 4:38John Wick is dark, too because he's just kills everybody.
- 4:41But you can kind of understand he's what set him off.
- 4:44I don't know. I mean, you can understand what
- 4:45set off Liam Neeson, too. I'm not really sure.
- 4:49I'm slipping on the ice here. What I can tell you is it's
- 4:51pretty dark. It's a little too dark to
- 4:53rewatch. There you go as it is.
- 4:56That's what I wanted to hear. Selling people into slavery and
- 4:59particularly girls just for sex and so that I don't that's
- 5:03really not. One of the most rewatchable.
- 5:05Worth seeing, but not most. Definitely worth seeing.
- 5:09Maybe watch the franchise because I think there's three.
- 5:11Yeah, I think I quit after the first one.
- 5:14Yeah, there you go. So not rewatchable.
- 5:16OK. I don't think that's the next
- 5:17one. How about this one?
- 5:18I don't know if you've seen it. I have not running it at 124
- 5:21minutes. Mark Wahlberg in Shooter.
- 5:24Have you seen Shooter? Haven't seen it, No.
- 5:26Well, we've. Done shot number one and two,
- 5:28we're big fans of shots here, but I don't know about.
- 5:30Yes, we are. So you haven't seen it.
- 5:32Okay, so we can't we can't say that ones rewatchable.
- 5:35It's not even watchable. Well, I know you're going to
- 5:36land on this one. Tom Cruise in Top Gun Maverick
- 5:40either. One of those the original or
- 5:42Maverick? Absolutely endless
- 5:45repeatability. I agree with you.
- 5:47That is. Just a fun movie, nice tribute
- 5:50with I mean Val Kilmer being his.
- 5:52That was his last screen appearance.
- 5:54It was, and that was a heart wrenching scene between him and
- 5:56Tom Cruise in his office where he couldn't communicate.
- 6:00But then at the very last minute, right at the end of the
- 6:03scene, he does use his voice, what's left of it.
- 6:05And I was just like, there wasn't a dry eye in the movie
- 6:07theater. I know I I use that phrase
- 6:09often. But truly, I was.
- 6:11Me and Rob Peetz are movie guys sobbing like idiots.
- 6:15But it feels good to do that sometimes.
- 6:17And, you know, when it's a genuine moment, Like, it was so
- 6:20genuine. Yeah.
- 6:21OK. All right, I think we're at.
- 6:23Number I love how you just blow right fast.
- 6:25Well, we got some big list emotions.
- 6:26And then I want some other that's on your part, so that
- 6:30one's endless repeatability. Endless.
- 6:32Rewatchable, but I think we're at #6 or so we're gonna do two
- 6:34more. We'll do our next shot, and then
- 6:36we'll get through the rest of the list.
- 6:37OK, We've got Denzel Washington in the equalizer.
- 6:41Oh, great movie. Never saw it.
- 6:43Dude that this is really good. Yeah, there was a TV show, and
- 6:47I'm not talking the Queen Latifah TV show, but there was
- 6:49one in the 80s called The Equalizer.
- 6:51Do you remember that? Correct.
- 6:52Yes. OK, you do remember that?
- 6:54Great. Yeah, I do remember it.
- 6:55I never watched it, but you don't need to know about the
- 6:58television division series to enjoy this movie.
- 7:00Yeah. I mean, Denzel, I'll pretty much
- 7:02watch anything that guy is in because he's just such a
- 7:04fantastic performer. He is.
- 7:06But this movie in particular, this is another one of those
- 7:09revenge stories somebody's. But he it's not him that's
- 7:12wronged. He witnesses others being
- 7:15wronged and he exacts revenge on their behalf.
- 7:17So he's kind of like a Robin Hood, except he's not stealing
- 7:20money, but he's he's trying to equalize, if you will, and he
- 7:24does amazingly well. It's good.
- 7:27He's like an ex CIA guy, Black Ops guy, right?
- 7:30Retired again. It's that trope, right?
- 7:32He's trying to live a normal life, but he cannot stand all
- 7:35the crime and things that are happening in all around him,
- 7:38like people getting extorted and whatever.
- 7:41Like the 1970s movies with Charles Bronson, They did a
- 7:43bunch of them. Yeah, death wish.
- 7:45Death wish many fantastic. Movies made.
- 7:48OK, we're going to go to number, I think 5 on the list and we're
- 7:51going to do a shot. I know where you're going to
- 7:52land on this one, and I'm going to agree with you.
- 7:53Die hard, the first die hard. So good.
- 7:56What are we even talking about here?
- 7:58That's that's everybody's favorite Christmas movie.
- 8:01Exactly. I remember as a kid I saw they
- 8:04put those movie posters up for this movie like months and maybe
- 8:07a year before in town. And I was like, just wanted to
- 8:10see it just based on the poster and like Bruce Willis was really
- 8:13popular from Moonlighting and I remember just being excited
- 8:17about that movie and lived up to the hype and continues to.
- 8:20Endless repeatability. Endless.
- 8:22OK, that one's definitely on the list.
- 8:24Let's take a break and do a shot, Barry.
- 8:27I think this is one of many shots you're going to be doing
- 8:29tonight because you're having a whole evening out.
- 8:32Whole evening. Dude, to touch on that before
- 8:35you do your shot, OK, I. Mean, I'm going out tonight,
- 8:38it's Barry's off the chain with some of his buddies, and we're
- 8:42going to my favorite bar in the whole entire world.
- 8:44And who knows what time we'll get home.
- 8:46It's a 4:00 AM night. You never know.
- 8:48You just don't. That's the bovine for those.
- 8:50Folks 100%. All right, Yeah, yeah.
- 8:52I won't be there with you in person, but I'll be there with
- 8:55you in spirit. And Speaking of spirit, let's
- 8:57have a spirit here with whatever the hell we're shooting.
- 9:00Cheers, You're on a roll. Cheers.
- 9:04It looks like that didn't land either.
- 9:05That missed the target. It's tough.
- 9:07This one's a tough shot. I I bought the whole bottle, so
- 9:10I will work my way through it. But we'll try it as a ship, as a
- 9:13shipper, as a sipper, and get back to you on that.
- 9:15Just going to ask you about that.
- 9:16All right, we're going into number something on the list
- 9:19again, I think I know we're going to land on this one.
- 9:21I think we're going to sync up first blood.
- 9:24Oh. I I keep making that noise.
- 9:26What are we even talking to? Of course First Blood is
- 9:29probably one of the first action films I ever saw.
- 9:31Fell in love with it. It's amazing.
- 9:33All shot in like the Canadian Rockies too, yeah.
- 9:37Really good movie. I watched executive producer
- 9:40Aldo Roman. I worked our way through many of
- 9:42the Rambo movies and so we really enjoyed that one, really
- 9:46enjoyed Rambo. They got a little dicier as
- 9:48you've moved along. Well first blood Part 2 is
- 9:51amazing. I think I was going.
- 9:52To ask, what's your favorite of those two?
- 9:54It's like trying to choose your favorite kid if I had a kid,
- 9:57like you can't care for children.
- 9:58You love them both equally. The third one is where things
- 10:01start to dip a little. But then they came back with
- 10:03just, they just called it Rambo. And that was awesome.
- 10:06But then they finished with Last Blood and that kind of was
- 10:09disappointing. But Rambo and then first Blood
- 10:13and Rambo, First blood, Part 2, those three, that's all you
- 10:16need. Forget about part three and last
- 10:18blood. Yeah, the second movie was
- 10:20absolutely incredible, and I don't know if you ever watched
- 10:23the Rambo Gambo cartoon. Series.
- 10:25I did not. I didn't know that there was 1.
- 10:27Really good series. As a kid I watched it.
- 10:29I used to record it on VHS. My aunt and uncle lived in
- 10:32Akron, OH. We didn't get it in Canada, so I
- 10:35would. I went down there to visit for a
- 10:36while. I just loaded up on as many
- 10:38episodes as I could. It's really good and they made a
- 10:40whole series of still, no, they didn't voice it, but OK, They
- 10:44did a imitation of his voice. Sounded close.
- 10:47Well, pretty close without. It wasn't being stared at.
- 10:50Football. No, no, it wasn't that.
- 10:52No, it wasn't that well played. Anyway, that was an OK cartoon
- 10:55and they had action figures and stuff.
- 10:57So he sort of made that crossword from the R rated to
- 10:59the action figure. Maybe that's why Part 3 went a
- 11:01little off the rails. I tried to be able to mass
- 11:03appeal. Yeah, parts of it were cool and
- 11:05I did like the whole battle against the Soviets, but yeah,
- 11:08it just OK anyway. We're going to move on.
- 11:10Another Tom Cruise 1 coming up on the charts here, Mission
- 11:13Impossible Fallout. Absolutely.
- 11:16That is a gem of the series. Truly is from start to finish.
- 11:20This thing just is unrelenting with its action.
- 11:22Yeah, Henry Caval is the as the heavy and this one, he's great.
- 11:26And the battle at the very end where he's got like motor oil
- 11:30burned half of his face and and he's battling Tom Cruise on top
- 11:33of this mountain. Tom Cruise is trying to get back
- 11:35this detonator so we can stop this nuclear bomb from going
- 11:39off. It's insane.
- 11:40If the whole thing is insane and very very re watchable, 100%.
- 11:45It's on your list. I would put it on my list.
- 11:47While we're here, what is your favorite of the end of the
- 11:50Mission Impossible movies? Is that it?
- 11:52This is another one. This is another Sophie's Choice
- 11:55here. I don't know.
- 11:56Pop it. Out.
- 11:56I love the first one. I love Fallout.
- 11:59I liked how it ended, if it ended, I don't know if it did,
- 12:01but you know the the final reckoning, Fucking amazing.
- 12:05Yeah, yeah, yeah. Sounds like an ending, but I
- 12:07don't know. I haven't seen that one yet.
- 12:08I've seen all the others. Rogue Nation is my favorite,
- 12:11just that Dubai coming out that that on the skyscraper Dubai
- 12:15like. That's not rogue nation, that is
- 12:17which one's that ghost protocol? Sorry, Ghost Protocol, That's my
- 12:20favorite. Rogue Nation came after that
- 12:21one, right? That's correct.
- 12:23That one not as good. Yeah, it was OK, A little shaky
- 12:25it. Was OK.
- 12:27Ghost Protocol is my all time favorite.
- 12:29Wow. Yeah, I don't disagree.
- 12:31That is a fantastic one too. Perfect.
- 12:33All right, let's see here. It's as websites will do.
- 12:36Sometimes they jump ahead. We're going to love this one.
- 12:38I think we're down to our last couple.
- 12:40Barry, you introduced me to this one.
- 12:41I got to tell you, I could watch this one multiple times a day.
- 12:45You know what I'm going to say? It's not Swamp Thing, I know
- 12:47that much. No, it is Mad Max Fury Rd.
- 12:51Yeah, fantastic. One of the most impressive
- 12:55cinematic feats I think I have ever witnessed.
- 12:58I showed executive producer Aldo Roman.
- 13:00He doesn't often go in for these types of movies and he was blown
- 13:03away by it. And in 4K the surround sound.
- 13:06Yeah, what do you sandstorm man? I would also put in there.
- 13:11I know we haven't gone to this part yet, but I love Fury Rd.
- 13:14but I also really liked Furiosa. Great.
- 13:16I thought that was just I could watch that multiple times for
- 13:19sure. Really excellent.
- 13:21You told me to watch it first, and I'm glad I did because I
- 13:24hadn't seen either of them. I was, even though it was
- 13:26released second. Yes, it was a prequel, and it's
- 13:29set up perfectly without, you know, having to.
- 13:31You didn't need to know everything about Fury Road to
- 13:33get Furiosa. Like it really set things up
- 13:35nicely. It did, and it gave more
- 13:37emotional heft to the, you know, Charlize Theron, the grown up
- 13:40Furiosa. You kind of get her perspective
- 13:42a lot more with her trying to get to the green place.
- 13:45We were like, well, what is this?
- 13:46Well, now we know. And how much more heart
- 13:48wrenching it was when she finally reached to find that it
- 13:50was just swallowed by sand. So yeah.
- 13:53So good. And there's a there's a book
- 13:55about it. Just what I read this all entire
- 13:57production. I think I was sharing with you
- 13:59some stories of just how. Yeah.
- 14:00And the time it took to make this movie.
- 14:02They made it over like a decade, maybe even more.
- 14:05Tom Hardy was a nobody when they cast him.
- 14:08And he just have by the time they actually got around to
- 14:10filming, he had done Dark Knight.
- 14:12He or sorry, he had done Dark Knight Rises.
- 14:14He had done all that. Like he was cast before he
- 14:15became Tom Hardy, the big deal. And so that's an amazing story.
- 14:19Totally last one. And then I want to get some
- 14:21other movies from you to round up the list.
- 14:23Terminator 2 Judgement. Day, you know, this one I
- 14:27sometimes wrestle with I love everything about it except for
- 14:31Edward Furlong, the kid I find the.
- 14:33Kid, I agree. Very irritating, just that high
- 14:36pitched squeaky squealy voice. I just, I have a hard time with
- 14:39it. And the fact that they made the
- 14:40Terminator, they they made him like kind of like a they dumbed
- 14:44him down. They made him, they try to make
- 14:46him into like a dad character, which I didn't really care for
- 14:50that, but there are parts of it that are just frigging amazing.
- 14:53So I don't know. Rewatchable though I would say
- 14:55definitely. Rewatch times.
- 14:57Rewatchable. No more than three, though.
- 14:58Two or one or two? What's your favorite on tour?
- 15:01Meet the first one, Arnold, as the villain, where he says, you
- 15:05know, like maybe 17 lines of dialogue in the entire movie.
- 15:09Like he is just perfectly cast. Linda Hamilton, Michael Bean,
- 15:13those guys are great. I yeah, I definitely prefer Part
- 15:161. OK, I think I'm 2 because I just
- 15:19like the big budget. Kind of like he just amped it up
- 15:21on steroids. So that's where I'm at.
- 15:23I'm also a sucker for that hero turn, like in wrestling, how the
- 15:27villain turns to be a hero. That's what Arnold did.
- 15:29I like that. So you like Part 2 more?
- 15:31Yeah, I did. OK.
- 15:33So Barry, as we wrap up in our final minutes, I want to hear
- 15:36what are one, There are two movies that didn't make that
- 15:38list that might make your action movie list rewatchable.
- 15:43Yeah, it would not. The Shawshank Redemption.
- 15:45Don't worry, that is entirely rewatchable, but a different
- 15:48category. It's not action, even though, as
- 15:50we talked about offline, Andy almost gets thrown off a roof.
- 15:54I don't know about you, but I've.
- 15:55Seen high action? Absolutely.
- 15:58That was high action to the jump out immediately that I cannot
- 16:00believe or not on this list. And again, we have touched on
- 16:04this in the past, both featuring the legendary Arnold
- 16:07Schwarzenegger. Where is Commando and where is
- 16:11Predator, the original movie like those two.
- 16:14And I know you said you don't believe that Commando holds up.
- 16:17Well, let me tell you as a dear friend and trusted advisor and
- 16:20Co host, yeah, it has endless repeatability.
- 16:23I'd be happy to loan it to you. It's not in 4K yet.
- 16:26It should be. They just had their 40th
- 16:27anniversary. But it's there's no disc
- 16:29available yet, but I have it on Blu-ray.
- 16:31Happy to loan it to you. Fantastic movie.
- 16:34Really. Great.
- 16:34OK, I'm going to take those. Dude, what's missing for you,
- 16:37Sir? I'm going to add in Jurassic
- 16:39World, the second Jurassic Park movie with with Jeff.
- 16:43Goldblum the Lost. World, Sorry, Lost World.
- 16:46The Lost. Yeah, not Jurassic World,
- 16:47although that was a good one too.
- 16:48The Lost World with Jeff Goldblum taking kind of the lead
- 16:52role. I thought he did such a great
- 16:53job. Of course, all those monsters.
- 16:55So I think that falls into action movie range.
- 16:58And what else might be 1. I might throw in Lost it.
- 17:02I had it like, could you throw in like an old Batman movie?
- 17:05Like could you throw in like Batman Forever?
- 17:07Like I enjoy watching the maybe the first Batman's not action,
- 17:10but Batman Forever with Tommy Lee Jones and Val Kilmer.
- 17:15I kind of like that Indiana Jones.
- 17:17I'm going to throw on Raiders of the Lost Ark.
- 17:18That's an there you go. Let's do that one.
- 17:20Endless repeatability on Raiders of the Lost Ark.
- 17:23That was I gave myself. Perfect pivot because I was
- 17:26questioning there. I know you enjoy that for the
- 17:28camp value, but truly, could you?
- 17:31Does it have that repeatability? Yeah, I bought it in 4K and I
- 17:34haven't watched it twice yet, so.
- 17:36Well, I think that the proof is in the pudding, my friend.
- 17:39Yeah. Anyway, that is a perfect list.
- 17:43I think we added to it in a positive way and you know our
- 17:46audience. If you are out there and
- 17:48wondering what to watch perhaps this weekend and some of these
- 17:51titles you don't haven't heard, actually, you know what, you
- 17:53should go watch Shooter and then tell us whether it's worth
- 17:56watching because I was wondering you and I are both like
- 17:58completely blank on. Yeah, exactly.
- 18:01And so pretty much that list came in, I would say pretty
- 18:04close to the mark. I agree.
- 18:06OK. All right, Jay.
- 18:08Well, good luck in Japan. Thank you.
- 18:09I'll see you when I get back and I'll be chatting with you while
