Latest / 22 Panels - A Comic Book Podcast / Saga Book Club #14 - Y: The Last Man, pt. One
Transcript
- 0:02Tad Eggleston: Good evening, everybody! Welcome back to 22 Panels and the Saga Book Club, except that we ran out of Saga, and we're waiting for more Saga, so we're doing some more Brian K. Vaughan. Last month was Spectators, this month we're introducing Marisol.
- 0:18Tad Eggleston: to why the last man? Because I somehow never sold it to her before, which I feel really bad about, because I really should have a long, long, long time ago.
- 0:31Marisol: Honestly.
- 0:32Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I mean, is it… is it as up your alley as… as… as I…
- 0:38Tad Eggleston: Think it should be, and therefore.
- 0:41Tad Eggleston: Shame on me for not putting it into your hands a decade ago, during a Saga hiatus.
- 0:49Matt: The first Saga hiatus?
- 0:52Tad Eggleston: He meant, like, month hiatuses.
- 0:58Marisol: The baby hiatus.
- 1:00Tad Eggleston: if I… Like, one of my favorite stories that I have ever…
- 1:07Tad Eggleston: heard on 22 panels, and therefore one that I repeat somewhat regularly. I need to start with here.
- 1:14Tad Eggleston: Because when… when we talked to Paul Levitz for the first time, he talked about this book.
- 1:21Tad Eggleston: And… What he said was, Karen and Heidi came and they pitched it to him, and he said, no.
- 1:30Tad Eggleston: No. What do you do after the first issue? It's like…
- 1:35Tad Eggleston: Teenage male pornographic fantasy, where does it go? No!
- 1:40Matt: He's not wrong.
- 1:43Tad Eggleston: And… and Karen and Heidi came back to him, and they're like, Brian's got 60 issues planned out, and this and this, and by the way, this was bullshit. Brian had pitched them this bullshit, but he did not have 60 issues at the time. He had a concept and a dream.
- 2:03Tad Eggleston: But they went in, these issues planned out, and blah blah blah, and still, he was like, no!
- 2:11Tad Eggleston: And finally, Karen, apparently, is like, Paul, do you trust me? It's like, well, yeah? And she's like, then make the goddamn book!
- 2:24Marisol: And now we're here.
- 2:26Tad Eggleston: And it lasted 60 issues, and it was amazing, and apparently, at… for the 60th issue.
- 2:34Tad Eggleston: Heidi had moved on, but they invited her back for lunch.
- 2:37Tad Eggleston: and… and Paul, Paul brought in a cake.
- 2:41Tad Eggleston: In the shape of a crow.
- 2:46Tad Eggleston: It's his mea culpa to Karen and Heidi.
- 2:54Tad Eggleston: To say, yep, okay.
- 3:00Tad Eggleston: So, why the last man?
- 3:04Marisol: Yes.
- 3:05Tad Eggleston: I don't even know.
- 3:06Matt: are telling.
- 3:08Tad Eggleston: Both… I have…
- 3:09Marisol: So many questions about this.
- 3:12Marisol: Just after reading the first volume.
- 3:14Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, I… I know that I'm gonna wind up finishing my reread, because, like, the first volume sucked me in enough that it's like, no, now I can't…
- 3:24Tad Eggleston: I have to re-read it all again.
- 3:26Matt: Yorick's an idiot.
- 3:29Tad Eggleston: He is and he isn't.
- 3:30Josh Eiserike: That's intentional.
- 3:32Matt: Right. I believe it.
- 3:33Tad Eggleston: He is and he isn't.
- 3:36Tad Eggleston: Dearing.
- 3:38Josh Eiserike: I will say that, I heard, Brian K. Vaughan say that he pitched this, to go back to that story, he pitched this as, the last boy on Earth becomes the last man on Earth. So it's, it's… he does read, and, and I mean, we can get into this later.
- 3:54Josh Eiserike: I haven't read this probably since the series wrapped.
- 3:58Josh Eiserike: So it's been a while for me.
- 4:00Josh Eiserike: And it was interesting, my perspective, all these years later. I still, spoiler alert, absolutely love this book.
- 4:08Josh Eiserike: But York did seem like a little kid, whereas when I was originally reading it, I was probably, if not the age of the character, then a little bit younger. And was totally like, oh yeah, York, he's great, he's cool, and now I'm just like, you're an idiot.
- 4:25Tad Eggleston: But a charming idiot, and a well-intentioned idiot, and, like, the type of idiot that I wish more people were.
- 4:34Josh Eiserike: Yes.
- 4:36Tad Eggleston: You know?
- 4:39Lee Woods: In what ways?
- 4:42Tad Eggleston: In what way?
- 4:43Lee Woods: I love one immediacy.
- 4:45Matt: What, you want more Pollyannish people around?
- 4:48Tad Eggleston: The stupid things he does are always to be… helpful.
- 4:55Matt: You, you know…
- 4:56Tad Eggleston: Sometimes completely misguided.
- 4:58Matt: I agree.
- 5:00Tad Eggleston: But, like, he's never stupid for thrills, and he's never stupid for his own selfish purposes.
- 5:07Tad Eggleston: Like, all of the most stupid things he does is when he gets it into his head to go…
- 5:16Tad Eggleston: Be the hero.
- 5:18Tad Eggleston: Or at least… not leave…
- 5:21Tad Eggleston: people behind, you know? I mean, like, when he climbs up on top of the train, when… when… when…
- 5:32Tad Eggleston: 355 is fighting with the…
- 5:36Tad Eggleston: the Russian, and it's like, dude, if anybody's got it, it's 3.55. What the fuck are you doing? But it doesn't matter to him. He saw her legs swing off the side, he's worried about her.
- 5:54Tad Eggleston: And he just… he's the guy that runs back into the fire.
- 5:59Tad Eggleston: you know…
- 6:02Lee Woods: So being well-intentioned is important.
- 6:04Josh Eiserike: Yeah, like I said…
- 6:06Matt: The pathway to hell is paved with it.
- 6:09Josh Eiserike: Well, you've read the whole series, I…
- 6:12Matt: Oh, yeah.
- 6:13Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 6:14Josh Eiserike: Yeah, so there you go.
- 6:16Marisol: Does this except me.
- 6:17Tad Eggleston: 8.
- 6:18Tad Eggleston: I don't know, Lee, have you read it all?
- 6:21Lee Woods: I did read the whole series, yes.
- 6:23Tad Eggleston: Oh.
- 6:24Marisol: Okay.
- 6:25Tad Eggleston: series since the last time we talked.
- 6:28Lee Woods: I did, so I…
- 6:30Tad Eggleston: I can't lie.
- 6:31Marisol: Well, BAM!
- 6:32Lee Woods: I…
- 6:33Marisol: Mr. Overachiever over here.
- 6:35Lee Woods: I am no such thing. Well…
- 6:38Tad Eggleston: It's hard to stop with this one.
- 6:40Lee Woods: So I did have… I'll tell you this story. Here's my… my Trials and tribulations, Marisol, is that I had the first volume, I read it several years ago.
- 6:48Lee Woods: Fell in love with it. I'm like, okay, this is amazing, I need to…
- 6:53Lee Woods: Get the rest of it, and…
- 6:55Lee Woods: I never did, and up until maybe this past year, I found an omnibus with all 60 issues.
- 7:04Marisol: Nice.
- 7:05Lee Woods: It just… happenstance, I was able to get it. It's like, okay, great. And then I've just been waiting, waiting, I'm like, man, it's a really big book, I need to… and I'm a slow reader.
- 7:16Tad Eggleston: Did you take it with to New Orleans?
- 7:18Lee Woods: On that 16-hour drive, I took it, and I.
- 7:22Tad Eggleston: Oh, that's right, you guys drove down!
- 7:25Lee Woods: We did…
- 7:25Marisol: God.
- 7:27Lee Woods: And I crushed about 3 quarters of it on the way there, and I finished it while I was still in New Orleans, and then on the way back, I'm like, okay.
- 7:36Lee Woods: I got this, so… I have my thoughts, I have a thought.
- 7:39Marisol: But that.
- 7:40Lee Woods: It was years, I'm like, I need to read this, and I finally did, so…
- 7:43Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah?
- 7:45Josh Eiserike: I am… I'm very… I'm very inspired now to do the whole series reread.
- 7:50Josh Eiserike: It was such a different… I… again, I…
- 7:53Tad Eggleston: I think, your daughter's penalty for not showing up on time, and certainly if she doesn't show up at all, is we're gonna push off red-handed again, because we need to do more Y.
- 8:05Matt: Absolutely.
- 8:07Tad Eggleston: I'm sorry.
- 8:08Josh Eiserike: So down for that.
- 8:08Matt: We'll tell her that right now.
- 8:10Tad Eggleston: I mean, we will get to red-handed.
- 8:13Lee Woods: It's such a… such a picture move.
- 8:16Tad Eggleston: Well, you know, I tried to take her out to get red-handed signed by Matt Kent, and she was busy helping her roommate move in, or some shit like that.
- 8:26Tad Eggleston: I didn't see her roommate there when she was moving in.
- 8:36Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, I… like, this is probably the… this is the beginning of, I think, my fourth read of this, and I forget every time just how fucking good it is.
- 8:44Matt: Nope.
- 8:46Tad Eggleston: button.
- 8:48Josh Eiserike: One of the things that struck me was…
- 8:51Josh Eiserike: I think he's become a better writer since. Oh, yeah.
- 8:55Matt: Oh, for sure. Nope.
- 8:56Josh Eiserike: Moment…
- 8:57Tad Eggleston: That's… that's part of the reason that I forget, is that it's still not Saga.
- 9:02Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 9:02Josh Eiserike: like, I'm looking at, what is it, the cliffhanger to the second issue.
- 9:08Josh Eiserike: And it's… it's when he's with
- 9:10Josh Eiserike: his mom in the White House, and somebody, like, I guess, throws in a bomb or something, and he's like, what is that? Is it the Amazon? She goes, it's worse, it's much, much worse. And then the issue just ends, and it's like, well, I don't care, like, what are the stakes?
- 9:27Tad Eggleston: No, yeah, the much, much worse, it's the Republicans.
- 9:31Matt: Americans, yeah.
- 9:33Josh Eiserike: Should've been on that tape.
- 9:35Tad Eggleston: Rather…
- 9:36Matt: Yeah, you're so right.
- 9:37Tad Eggleston: rather than not until page… Three of the next book.
- 9:43Josh Eiserike: Yeah, and I was like, wow!
- 9:45Josh Eiserike: I… I… I don't know how…
- 9:48Josh Eiserike: this happened in Issue 2. And look, this is… this is a nitpicky thing, but it's like, he's so good at cliffhangers.
- 9:54Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 9:55Josh Eiserike: And now, going back and looking at some of his early ones, I'm like, I wonder if he would have changed that.
- 10:01Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I hope he would have, because I think that the punchline.
- 10:06Josh Eiserike: Yes.
- 10:06Tad Eggleston: Like, it doesn't give away enough of what's coming.
- 10:09Tad Eggleston: Yeah. For it not to still be a great cliffhanger, but…
- 10:14Josh Eiserike: If I just see these, like, older women.
- 10:16Tad Eggleston: We don't know anything worse than the Amazons, and… and, like…
- 10:22Tad Eggleston: So, like, what does it mean if it just says it's much, much worse?
- 10:27Josh Eiserike: Yeah, doesn't mean anything.
- 10:28Marisol: And yeah, maybe it is a little bit nitpicky, but you're not wrong, because if they ended on the panel with all the women in front of the truck holding their guns, with just the word bubble that said Republicans, that would have been phenomenal.
- 10:47Josh Eiserike: Yes.
- 10:47Tad Eggleston: I mean, even if it doesn't end on that panel, even if it just adds one more word balloon.
- 10:53Tad Eggleston: to this page.
- 10:56Josh Eiserike: Yeah, I'm with Marisol on this, because.
- 10:58Tad Eggleston: I agree with you. I think that that's the better panel to end on. But… but…
- 11:07Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 11:08Tad Eggleston: But I don't think you have to go that far to be better than what's here. Correct. This is what I'm saying.
- 11:13Josh Eiserike: Correct.
- 11:14Tad Eggleston: you know. Cause sometimes it's harder to get that extra page in, or…
- 11:19Tad Eggleston: I mean, they'd have to rework this entire page to be able to end that way. And I'm not saying that I don't think they could.
- 11:26Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 11:27Josh Eiserike: Yeah. Now, reading it in the trade, it's like, whatever, but I remember…
- 11:34Tad Eggleston: Waiting a month.
- 11:35Josh Eiserike: I bought the first 3 trades, and I was like, I love this guy's cliffhanger so much, I'm going all to the floppies now.
- 11:42Josh Eiserike: And, you know, I never looked back, but now I'm looking back.
- 11:52Lee Woods: So, I… I kind of want to pick your brain, Marisol. Like, this is your first read-through, right?
- 11:57Marisol: Yes.
- 11:58Lee Woods: I'm trying to put myself back when I read the first volume. What was your, sort of.
- 12:03Lee Woods: Reaction or experience reading that for the first time?
- 12:07Marisol: My initial thought was mostly that… York is a fucking idiot.
- 12:17Marisol: As lovable and well-meaning as he may be, he is an idiot.
- 12:23Marisol: And some of the things he says are just obnoxious to me, and like, it made me think what I was reading, like.
- 12:30Marisol: Someone, an adult, please, just give him a little smack upside the head, tell him to shut up and sit down for 5 minutes, and use his critical thinking skills before rushing…
- 12:42Matt: Talking!
- 12:43Marisol: danger.
- 12:45Matt: Yep.
- 12:46Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, that does become a recurring theme with 355 and various.
- 12:52Marisol: Yeah.
- 12:52Tad Eggleston: It's like, okay.
- 12:54Marisol: Not I've noticed.
- 12:57Tad Eggleston: You are a child.
- 12:58Marisol: that you know nothing.
- 13:00Tad Eggleston: Sometimes I think that they're about ready to just give them a slinky. Here you go, York! Yep.
- 13:06Matt: Here, play with it.
- 13:09Tad Eggleston: I mean, it's too bad that they didn't bring his straitjacket with him. They could just tie him up and…
- 13:14Tad Eggleston: Say, okay, by the time you're done, we'll be ready to move on.
- 13:20Marisol: Yep, just stick them in a corner somewhere.
- 13:23Marisol: And the other thing that really stuck out with me, too, is…
- 13:30Marisol: 355, and whatever group that she's involved with.
- 13:36Marisol: Because she is just bouncing all around the globe, picked up that one lady who's now the president.
- 13:42Tad Eggleston: Right?
- 13:43Marisol: And is now his glorified babysitter.
- 13:47Marisol: to get him to Dr. Mann.
- 13:51Marisol: To figure out, why the hell did you survive when…
- 13:53Tad Eggleston: I went to San Francisco.
- 13:55Matt: Did anyone else find the Doctor being Dr. Mann.
- 13:59Josh Eiserike: Yes.
- 14:01Josh Eiserike: Yeah, she chose it.
- 14:03Tad Eggleston: Yay.
- 14:06Marisol: That was…
- 14:06Tad Eggleston: I do think… I don't know if I love how often he does… the…
- 14:15Tad Eggleston: Seems to lean awfully hard, also, on the… the… like… foreshadow page?
- 14:24Tad Eggleston: You know, where that first page or two is, like, Washington, D.C. now, and then you go back one hour ago.
- 14:35Marisol: Yeah.
- 14:37Tad Eggleston: And, like, that can work sometimes, but I feel like he was using it a lot.
- 14:42Lee Woods: Yeah, I… I appreciate that.
- 14:45Matt: Didn't bother me, though.
- 14:47Josh Eiserike: I like it.
- 14:48Tad Eggleston: Yeah, okay.
- 14:49Lee Woods: My… so my thing is, and this goes for not just, comic books, but even, like, movies, I hate flashback scenes. I get so lost. I'm like, is this now? Is it in the past? So I have to have those big signs that say.
- 15:05Tad Eggleston: No, no, no, I love the signs. Okay. What I'm saying is, like, 3 issues in a row.
- 15:14Tad Eggleston: The first couple of pages take place After the next 10 pages.
- 15:23Lee Woods: Oh, I follow, yeah, okay.
- 15:25Tad Eggleston: And, and… I…
- 15:30Tad Eggleston: when it reaches a point where I notice that you're doing it, I feel like you might be doing it too often.
- 15:37Matt: It's like…
- 15:37Marisol: I can…
- 15:38Matt: Deadpool. Deadpool would be, like, lazy writing.
- 15:41Lee Woods: Good.
- 15:41Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 15:44Lee Woods: You're saving ink.
- 15:50Marisol: Hmm.
- 15:51Marisol: Man.
- 15:52Tad Eggleston: But on the flip side, like, those are nitpicky complaints, particularly because who knows, maybe there's a rhythm of it eventually that I like it again.
- 16:02Tad Eggleston: You know, because he definitely writes…
- 16:05Tad Eggleston: Formulaic books, but, but, like, his own formula.
- 16:11Josh Eiserike: When does that?
- 16:11Marisol: It came out again?
- 16:12Josh Eiserike: It started in, I think, 2002, like…
- 16:16Marisol: That tracks.
- 16:17Josh Eiserike: reading it again, like, this… this very much feels like, oh, this is a post-9-11 book. Like, that's what it.
- 16:24Marisol: It's real.
- 16:24Josh Eiserike: about.
- 16:25Josh Eiserike: And I feel it more now than I did then, like.
- 16:29Tad Eggleston: 2002 through 2008.
- 16:32Marisol: Yeah. Hmm.
- 16:34Josh Eiserike: Oh.
- 16:34Marisol: My thing mostly stuck out with me, some of the language, a little dated. I'm like, hmm. And I didn't look it up, and I didn't pay attention to the beginning
- 16:43Marisol: I guess… credits page of the volume. I wonder when this came out.
- 16:49Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 16:51Josh Eiserike: Yeah, no.
- 16:51Marisol: That's like that.
- 16:53Josh Eiserike: I had that experience, too, where I was like, oh, I don't think he… I don't think he would write that in 2026, but okay.
- 16:57Tad Eggleston: Okay, see…
- 16:58Marisol: I didn't hear anymore.
- 17:00Tad Eggleston: There is something that I did not realize. For whatever reason, in my head.
- 17:06Tad Eggleston: Ex Machina was before Why the Last Man, and in fact, it started 2 years after, ended 2 years after.
- 17:13Josh Eiserike: Correct. Which is even more…
- 17:15Tad Eggleston: Which…
- 17:16Josh Eiserike: about 9-11.
- 17:17Tad Eggleston: Right, but that also means that for 4 years, he was doing something that he doesn't love doing, which was writing two ongoing at the same time.
- 17:27Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 17:29Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 17:31Josh Eiserike: And… and I think he was on Runaways during that, too.
- 17:34Tad Eggleston: I feel like he was, yeah.
- 17:40Lee Woods: Yeah.
- 17:41Josh Eiserike: before Hollywood came calling.
- 17:44Tad Eggleston: Yeah, Always…
- 17:48Lee Woods: Yeah, what you said, Marisol, but also something you said earlier, Josh, that really resonated with me, is that he's such an idiot.
- 17:56Lee Woods: But I'm also recalling the last, like, the first time I read it, I'm like.
- 18:01Lee Woods: I had been fun with that, especially the hopeless romantic type.
- 18:06Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah.
- 18:07Lee Woods: This guy wants to go, I guess spoilers for those that haven't read it yet, is, he wants to go to Australia, because he…
- 18:14Tad Eggleston: He has every woman in the world at his fingertips, or at least all the non-Amazon, non-already-lesbian ones.
- 18:24Lee Woods: Mmm, m.
- 18:24Tad Eggleston: Hmm.
- 18:25Tad Eggleston: And he wants to go around the world to connect with the…
- 18:33Tad Eggleston: Girlfriend who wanted to tell him something before the… The phone started having trouble.
- 18:43Lee Woods: Beyonce.
- 18:44Lee Woods: She said.
- 18:45Tad Eggleston: Well, maybe.
- 18:47Marisol: Supposed fiance.
- 18:49Tad Eggleston: Even he's starting to acknowledge he didn't really hear her say yes, and remember, as he was getting ready to ask her, she's like, York, I need to tell you something. No, I need to tell you something!
- 19:03Marisol: How old is he supposed to be again?
- 19:05Marisol: I think, like, early 20s?
- 19:07Josh Eiserike: Early 20s.
- 19:08Tad Eggleston: Early mid-20s, I think.
- 19:10Lee Woods: Man-child. Definitely a man-child.
- 19:12Marisol: Yes.
- 19:13Josh Eiserike: I also think that's why this works, is because.
- 19:16Tad Eggleston: Oh, totally.
- 19:17Josh Eiserike: If he wasn't that character, then it just becomes the masturbatory fantasy, and to Paul Levitz's point, like, I'm not really interested in that either.
- 19:26Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 19:27Matt: Yeah, if it was that, it wouldn't have gone for 60 issues. No.
- 19:32Matt: It would have gone for 69 issues.
- 19:35Marisol: Nice.
- 19:37Matt: I'll be here all week.
- 19:42Lee Woods: Yeah, that was a facepalm… facepalm for me.
- 19:44Marisol: Well…
- 19:44Matt: Like, it'll take you out.
- 19:46Tad Eggleston: Josh, by the way, I love your shirt.
- 19:49Josh Eiserike: Thank you.
- 19:49Tad Eggleston: hearing Ben Stein in my head, Adamson… Adler… Anderson.
- 19:57Tad Eggleston: Do you know…
- 19:58Josh Eiserike: man-children, Ferris Bueller.
- 20:00Tad Eggleston: as an aside.
- 20:00Josh Eiserike: I was… I was at the airport a couple, last month, and a woman pulls, older woman pulls me aside. I was wearing the shirt. Oh, I love your shirt. I was in the movie. I was one of the dancers.
- 20:11Tad Eggleston: Nice.
- 20:12Josh Eiserike: That's the greatest thing in the world.
- 20:14Tad Eggleston: At one of the Cubs games I went to this year, there was a family dressed up… as…
- 20:21Josh Eiserike: Nice.
- 20:22Tad Eggleston: Cameron, Ferris, and… and Sloan.
- 20:26Tad Eggleston: What was really great is it was the 4-year-old dressed as Ferrish.
- 20:33Tad Eggleston: And, like, dead on.
- 20:35Matt: Morning.
- 20:37Josh Eiserike: that'.
- 20:37Tad Eggleston: Sweater vest and everything.
- 20:38Marisol: everything.
- 20:39Tad Eggleston: Just totally rockin' it.
- 20:42Josh Eiserike: Sort of changing subjects back to why, I'm real curious, everybody, did anybody watch the television show?
- 20:50Tad Eggleston: I watched, like, the first episode, and it didn't… There was a television show? There was. FX did a.
- 20:57Marisol: Yeah.
- 20:58Tad Eggleston: And it didn't… didn't do well enough to actually get finished.
- 21:03Josh Eiserike: I actually watched it once it was canceled.
- 21:07Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 21:07Josh Eiserike: I heard it was… not great.
- 21:11Josh Eiserike: I think I had a friend who worked on it, I don't remember, but I'm also, like, like, TV, like, these long-running series are such a commitment, so sometimes I'll wait till it's done, so I'm not waiting, like, 5 years between seasons.
- 21:26Josh Eiserike: And then it was canceled. I'm like, okay, I'll check it out, and like, you know, I thought the casting was really good, but I thought it just kind of lacked, and this is where I think the book really works, is it has a lot… the book has a lot of humor and a lot of heart, whereas I felt the show was just kind of like generic post-apocalypse, with.
- 21:44Tad Eggleston: I mean, again, I really only watched, like, the first episode, but it was just… So…
- 21:51Tad Eggleston: It was too serious.
- 21:53Josh Eiserike: Yes, it's very strange.
- 21:54Tad Eggleston: Best way to put it. It was just too serious.
- 21:56Josh Eiserike: Yes.
- 21:58Lee Woods: Dude, this came out in 2021?
- 22:00Tad Eggleston: Ma'am.
- 22:01Lee Woods: Wow.
- 22:01Marisol: Wow.
- 22:07Lee Woods: Sorry, I knew there was a TV show, but I thought this was, like.
- 22:11Lee Woods: It's only 5 years ago, that's wild.
- 22:14Josh Eiserike: Tad at some point, Netflix takes another stab.
- 22:18Tad Eggleston: Wouldn't shock me. Though, I mean…
- 22:21Tad Eggleston: and I know some behind-the-scenes stuff on this, like, the fact that Paper Girls wound up being flat, too, makes me wonder how long it'll be before somebody feels like they can actually capture a Vaughn comic.
- 22:39Josh Eiserike: I can't say too much on the air, but there was some behind-the-scenes stuff on.
- 22:45Tad Eggleston: Oh, no, no, no, no. I just said that. I know that there was some behind-the-scenes stuff on Paper Girls. I also am privy to some of the.
- 22:55Josh Eiserike: Got it. We can, we can, we can discuss offline, because we probably know the same thing.
- 23:00Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 23:02Tad Eggleston: But… But still, like, like… I, I wonder how quick
- 23:09Tad Eggleston: I mean, I still think that if… if…
- 23:13Tad Eggleston: another Vaughn series is made into TV anytime soon, it's gonna be somebody taking a big swing at Saga. And if that works…
- 23:23Tad Eggleston: Then you'll see them looking at everything.
- 23:26Tad Eggleston: But, like, Runaways, they had trouble adapting, like… He, right?
- 23:33Josh Eiserike: My friend was on that show.
- 23:35Tad Eggleston: He writes great comics, and great comics are great comics, and as much as some people in Hollywood like to think that a great comic book is just storyboarding, it's not.
- 23:47Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 23:47Tad Eggleston: You know, and, like, to get the rhythm, to get the pacing, to get…
- 23:54Tad Eggleston: The feel of a good comic is not…
- 23:58Josh Eiserike: I… I predict somebody like David Robert Mitchell's gonna do Spectators, and that's gonna be the one, like, just as, like…
- 24:06Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 24:07Josh Eiserike: That'll be the one that's gonna kind of bust it open a little bit.
- 24:10Tad Eggleston: And honestly, in a lot of ways, I think… I think doing the graph… doing graphic novels is easier than doing…
- 24:17Josh Eiserike: Yes.
- 24:18Tad Eggleston: comics, because I think with comics, everybody wants to split them the same way the issues were split, and that's not necessarily the smart way to go about it.
- 24:26Tad Eggleston: You know?
- 24:30Tad Eggleston: I mean, you know way more about TV than I do. We could have a whole, like, like, I know enough people that write TV, too, that it'd be fun sometime to have a whole conversation about, like.
- 24:42Tad Eggleston: the major differences between writing comics and writing TV, and… and the pitfalls of the adaptation thereof.
- 24:52Tad Eggleston: I mean, for my… for my money, in general, there have been much better…
- 24:58Tad Eggleston: Adaptations of television properties to comics than the other way around.
- 25:04Tad Eggleston: You know, for every great…
- 25:11Tad Eggleston: television adaptation. There are 4 or 5 that just miss… something.
- 25:18Tad Eggleston: You know… And I still appreciate them.
- 25:22Tad Eggleston: Because they often bring people to comics that weren't there already.
- 25:26Tad Eggleston: But, like, I think of, like, Preacher. Preacher, if you hadn't read the comic.
- 25:33Tad Eggleston: Is a pretty good show, and if you have read the comic, you're sitting there going, you spent the entire season to get through the first issue.
- 25:41Tad Eggleston: You added some stuff that was unnecessary, and you didn't get them on the road.
- 25:48Tad Eggleston: You know… I think, I think it, it hit a better… Groove in its later seasons.
- 25:58Tad Eggleston: But, but it was almost like…
- 26:00Tad Eggleston: It felt almost like they had to do the first season the way they did it as proof of concept.
- 26:06Tad Eggleston: Even though…
- 26:08Tad Eggleston: Like, again, all of the information from the first season can be found in the first issue of the book.
- 26:17Tad Eggleston: And they don't get on the road, probably because it was cheaper to film in one spot than…
- 26:23Josh Eiserike: I… I actually think that… I… here I… other than I had a friend who was on the show.
- 26:30Josh Eiserike: I suspect that was likely true of Runaways, where, like, I don't think they run away until the end of the first season.
- 26:37Tad Eggleston: Right!
- 26:38Josh Eiserike: it's like, in the comic, they're gone. It's the first issue. The premise of the book. It's called Runaways.
- 26:44Tad Eggleston: Right!
- 26:47Tad Eggleston: But it also is, like, another, another…
- 26:53Tad Eggleston: Another huge statement about the difference in mediums, that, like.
- 26:58Tad Eggleston: You can spend an entire season
- 27:02Tad Eggleston: Because you feel like that's how much space needs to be
- 27:05Tad Eggleston: used to get out a certain amount of information about how the world works that they managed to do
- 27:13Tad Eggleston: In an issue of a comic book.
- 27:17Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 27:18Josh Eiserike: I mean, often, and I can't speak specific to any of these shows, but often it comes down to episode order, whatever the network mandate is, so they could be, like, you know.
- 27:30Josh Eiserike: We really want… Or what?
- 27:33Tad Eggleston: Trust me, I blame the studios way more than the writers and the directors and the whatnot, among other things.
- 27:40Matt: Always fuck it up.
- 27:41Tad Eggleston: Among other things, I think it's the executives that think that the audiences are too stupid to take too much information at once.
- 27:48Tad Eggleston: But, like, I feel like they spent an entire episode of the first season of Preacher
- 27:55Tad Eggleston: Describing how the voice came about, And that was… a page.
- 28:04Tad Eggleston: In the first issue.
- 28:07Tad Eggleston: You know, angel, demon, fucked, baby, new idea. Voice.
- 28:17Lee Woods: It reminds me of a, there was a panel that John Bernthal was on some number of years ago, I think it was when he was doing his, Punisher Netflix seasons.
- 28:26Lee Woods: And I just remember one… an audience member just… I forget the question, but it was like, what were your thoughts on, like, this comic or whatever, like, doing this in this show?
- 28:35Lee Woods: And John Bernthal was just like, yeah, y'all are too smart. Like, y'all know the comics, these executives, these producers, they don't, like, they're just like, what do we think?
- 28:47Lee Woods: people will like. Y'all actually read it. He's like, y'all are, like, too smart for this, and I… I… I get that, like, to some degree, because…
- 28:57Lee Woods: although I don't have a lot of experience reading comics, prior to watching these shows, like,
- 29:03Lee Woods: I'll say something without saying too much, is I read Supergirl, Woman of Tomorrow, before I watched the movie, and it's just like, wow!
- 29:15Lee Woods: okay, this is what we're doing. So I kind of get this sort of, like, switch of, like.
- 29:23Lee Woods: Yeah, comment, to your point, Tad, is like…
- 29:26Lee Woods: It could be almost like a verbatim, like, panel by panel, scene by scene, and it can be a great movie or a great show.
- 29:36Lee Woods: I guess, for me, which I agree with you, Josh. I think spectators would be…
- 29:41Lee Woods: They get spectators, they got Saga in a bag, for sure.
- 29:46Lee Woods: But it's…
- 29:47Tad Eggleston: Of course, they're gonna have to convince HBO to do spectators, because nobody else will allow that level of nudity.
- 29:54Matt: Unless they just… The violence they'll do.
- 29:56Tad Eggleston: Unless…
- 29:57Matt: and PBS.
- 29:58Tad Eggleston: Right, unless they just go full on and, like, it's a hustler production.
- 30:04Josh Eiserike: You can… you can… Again, phenomenal.
- 30:07Marisol: beginning.
- 30:07Josh Eiserike: at…
- 30:08Josh Eiserike: you get a big director, or… and I keep… I just watched End of Oak Street, so I'm thinking, you know, David Robert Mitchell, if you guys haven't seen,
- 30:17Josh Eiserike: Under the Silver Lake, it's awesome.
- 30:21Josh Eiserike: like, he also did It Follows, like, I think finding the right director, you can do that as, like, a pretty hard R.
- 30:29Josh Eiserike: I don't know how successful… like, it probably would not be initially successful if it's, like, a limited run before opening wide. I think there could be really good word of mouth, and I sound like such a fucking executive right now.
- 30:46Josh Eiserike: I see you!
- 30:47Tad Eggleston: I've been in meetings lately, Josh.
- 30:50Josh Eiserike: That's all I do.
- 30:53Marisol: God.
- 30:55Josh Eiserike: No, I'm not…
- 30:56Tad Eggleston: Pitching stuff!
- 30:58Josh Eiserike: Well, to that point, I… I… because we're, you know, we're on the air right now, I'm actually chasing the rights right now to a graphic novel that I love.
- 31:09Josh Eiserike: really, really want to adapt for TV. And one of the initial conversations I had with my reps was…
- 31:16Tad Eggleston: The teen boat?
- 31:18Josh Eiserike: I'm not saying.
- 31:19Tad Eggleston: The teen that's also.
- 31:21Josh Eiserike: I know what Teen Boat is,
- 31:24Lee Woods: Does it run?
- 31:25Josh Eiserike: I'm not stuck.
- 31:25Lee Woods: haters.
- 31:27Marisol: It does not.
- 31:29Josh Eiserike: I'm, I'm, I'm happy, I'm happy.
- 31:31Tad Eggleston: I'm proud that you know what Teen Boat is. Of course. Lee, Marisol, Matt, have any of you read Teen Boat?
- 31:38Tad Eggleston: It's true.
- 31:39Marisol: Nobody turns in.
- 31:40Josh Eiserike: to a boat.
- 31:42Marisol: Fuck!
- 31:43Josh Eiserike: That's exactly what it is.
- 31:44Tad Eggleston: The teen that turns into a boat was actually recommended to me by Matt Rosenberg and Tyler Voss, so I had to read it. You don't talk to the guys who made four kids walk in the bank and have them recommend a book, and then not go off and read it.
- 31:59Tad Eggleston: He actually turns into a boat for the class party.
- 32:03Tad Eggleston: The class party is on him!
- 32:07Marisol: Oh, God, okay.
- 32:09Tad Eggleston: And somehow, it actually kind of works. I don't know how.
- 32:13Lee Woods: I, I…
- 32:14Tad Eggleston: at some point need to, like, take a deeper dive, because I… I was amused and didn't feel like it was as stupid as it should be.
- 32:27Josh Eiserike: Anyway, all I… as you said.
- 32:30Tad Eggleston: Are you sure it's not Teamboat Josh?
- 32:32Josh Eiserike: It's… it's not… I will tell you, it is not…
- 32:34Tad Eggleston: 14 vote.
- 32:35Josh Eiserike: But in doing this process, the conversation I had was movies versus television. And, you know, this is… this is a graphic novel, so beginning, middle, and end, and my thought was, I do think there's more there.
- 32:46Josh Eiserike: I think that, and again, you know, like, and I said… that's what I said was, in my perfect world, like, the comparable I would use is something like the Umbrella Academy, where it… I thought it did a really good job of adapting, what was that, like, a 6-issue miniseries?
- 33:02Tad Eggleston: Something like that.
- 33:04Josh Eiserike: And just, like, and I mean, I have it on my shelf behind me, but just building it out in a way that was kind of fun, but also felt true to the spirit of the book, and to bring it back to Why The Last Man, and I got us off on this tangent, I'll bring us back.
- 33:17Josh Eiserike: that's where I think the show ultimately did not succeed, is because it wasn't…
- 33:22Josh Eiserike: It was kind of the story, but it wasn't the spirit.
- 33:25Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 33:25Lee Woods: Interesting.
- 33:27Lee Woods: Yeah, okay.
- 33:29Tad Eggleston: I mean, and that's… that's the…
- 33:31Tad Eggleston: I mean, that's what I've been saying about…
- 33:35Tad Eggleston: Comic adaptations since the first time they did any good ones.
- 33:41Tad Eggleston: Is… is the key, is way more catching the spirit than… Than telling the story
- 33:54Tad Eggleston: dead on. You know, the reason the tow…
- 33:57Tad Eggleston: particularly the first two Tobey Maguire Spider-Mans worked. The reason the Tom Holland Spider-Mans work really well is they feel like
- 34:07Tad Eggleston: Spider-Man.
- 34:10Tad Eggleston: It feels like Peter Parker.
- 34:14Tad Eggleston: You know?
- 34:16Tad Eggleston: the reason why Man of Steel never worked for me, even though I understand the people who say that it's a good movie.
- 34:26Tad Eggleston: is that…
- 34:28Tad Eggleston: it doesn't feel like Superman to me, so maybe it's a good movie, but it's not a good Superman movie.
- 34:35Marisol: Makes sense.
- 34:36Tad Eggleston: Almost everybody I know who likes Man of Steel isn't really a Superman guy. Most of them aren't even really comic guys, and I get that, you know.
- 34:45Matt: superhero… a Superman guy, and I did like Man of Steel, so…
- 34:48Tad Eggleston: Right. I agree. Right.
- 34:49Matt: I get it.
- 34:50Tad Eggleston: So, like, I mean, it's kind of like, you know, I'm the weirdest Star Wars guy, because I…
- 34:57Tad Eggleston: I love The Last Jedi.
- 35:02Tad Eggleston: But… but I fit in with a lot of the critics, who It and Empire Strikes Back are the only two Star Wars movies from the Skywalker saga that they like at all.
- 35:13Tad Eggleston: You know… But, like, when you're adapting a comic, particularly
- 35:22Tad Eggleston: any of the longer-running ones, the real catch is, do you capture essence.
- 35:32Tad Eggleston: like… I mean, the example that I often use is the Affleck Daredevil.
- 35:37Tad Eggleston: like…
- 35:40Tad Eggleston: What pisses me off the most is it ends in the right spot.
- 35:45Tad Eggleston: I felt like he finally became Matt Murdock in the last 10 minutes of the movie.
- 35:52Tad Eggleston: But…
- 35:53Tad Eggleston: The hour and 10, or the hour and however many minutes before that meant we weren't getting a sequel.
- 36:01Tad Eggleston: So we were never gonna see him, where he got to spend an entire movie actually being Matt Murdock.
- 36:10Lee Woods: So then, because I am, I guess, more the inexperienced side here, and I think this would be a good question for the group, especially as we relate it back to, like, why The Last Man, especially kind of brainstorming this, like, the revamp of, like, the show or movie, is…
- 36:28Lee Woods: what… I guess, what, in your opinions.
- 36:32Lee Woods: are the best ways to capture the spirit. Is it through the writing? Is it through the art? Is it through the acting? What is it that really captures the spirit of the comic medium?
- 36:44Matt: Have you watched Peacemaker?
- 36:47Lee Woods: Yes.
- 36:48Matt: that captures the spirit.
- 36:55Matt: I don't know how James Gunn does it, but to me, that's the answer to your question.
- 37:01Josh Eiserike: Are you… Matt, are you saying the tone of Peacemaker, or that captures the spirit of Peacemaker for that show, for what it is?
- 37:07Matt: No, the spirit of peacemaker, the… the… the… interpretation of vigilante, Peacemaker, the…
- 37:17Matt: absurdity, yet seriousness, the… you know…
- 37:23Josh Eiserike: I think… I think, Lee, where I would start is…
- 37:28Josh Eiserike: you know, in this perfect world 10 years from now, where Netflix is calling me to do this.
- 37:33Josh Eiserike: My first hires in my writer's room.
- 37:36Josh Eiserike: Other than fans of the comic are comedy writers.
- 37:39Tad Eggleston: Yes.
- 37:40Josh Eiserike: I'm not… and I'm not saying do this as a comedy, but it's a funny book!
- 37:45Matt: Yep.
- 37:45Josh Eiserike: Like, it has so much humor and so much heart.
- 37:49Tad Eggleston: Well, well, and the essence of York…
- 37:53Tad Eggleston: is…
- 37:54Josh Eiserike: The fool!
- 37:55Tad Eggleston: Yes, but he's… he's a wise fool. He's a sophomore.
- 38:00Tad Eggleston: Yeah. He's the definition of a sophomore. He has wisdom.
- 38:05Matt: doesn't care.
- 38:06Tad Eggleston: He has wisdom, he… he has intelligence, he has skills, but he also is…
- 38:16Tad Eggleston: Idealistic to the point of naivety?
- 38:21Tad Eggleston: he is… desirous of a romantic good to the point of putting himself regularly in danger?
- 38:36Tad Eggleston: And humor is his coping mechanism.
- 38:41Josh Eiserike: Yes.
- 38:42Marisol: Yeah.
- 38:43Tad Eggleston: So if you don't capture those things about Yorick, Nothing else will matter.
- 38:49Josh Eiserike: Correct.
- 38:53Tad Eggleston: You know.
- 38:54Marisol: Doesn't matter who you get to blame if you don't have that.
- 38:57Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 38:58Josh Eiserike: And I actually thought the actor they got to play him was pretty good.
- 39:02Josh Eiserike: It just was tonally, just… it was… it was not the book.
- 39:07Tad Eggleston: I mean, lots of people hate it when I say this, but I insist that in film, writers matter more than actors.
- 39:16Tad Eggleston: When you've got multiple takes, when you've got multiple angles, you need a… you need a… a adequate actor who can take direction if you have the good script.
- 39:32Tad Eggleston: And if you have a good actor and a good script, then you're money in the bank.
- 39:36Josh Eiserike: Yeah, no, I mean, that's,
- 39:39Josh Eiserike: you're already winning. If you have a good script and a bad actor, you're in better shape than a bad script and a good actor.
- 39:48Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 39:48Marisol: Yes.
- 39:50Matt: So, Green Lantern with Ryan Reynolds.
- 39:55Marisol: Yes.
- 39:59Matt: I still like that movie, I don't care what anyone says.
- 40:02Tad Eggleston: You know, Ryan Reynolds is one of the handful of guys that has that right mixture of comedy, gravitas, and whatnot. Yup. Like, I mean, one of the reasons that I lean towards writers and directors is, again.
- 40:16Tad Eggleston: Bad directing, bad writing, and it's very hard to save a movie. Ryan Reynolds is on the very short list of people that somehow can.
- 40:25Tad Eggleston: I can't make it good!
- 40:28Tad Eggleston: But they can make it watchable. Yes, yes.
- 40:32Josh Eiserike: Yes.
- 40:32Tad Eggleston: You know…
- 40:33Marisol: Sometimes that's enough.
- 40:34Tad Eggleston: Eaton, Ryan Reynolds… Audrey Hepburn.
- 40:40Tad Eggleston: The list…
- 40:41Matt: Jeremy?
- 40:42Tad Eggleston: much longer.
- 40:47Josh Eiserike: But also, to that point, Tad, I think Yorick…
- 40:50Josh Eiserike: Is a very difficult part to play.
- 40:52Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah.
- 40:53Tad Eggleston: I think it's a very difficult part to play, I think it's a very difficult part to write.
- 40:57Josh Eiserike: Yes.
- 40:58Tad Eggleston: You know, because as… as… as Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller just discovered with… with…
- 41:05Tad Eggleston: Sin City, like, comic book dialogue and movie dialogue aren't always really the same.
- 41:10Matt: Very different animals, yeah.
- 41:12Tad Eggleston: Like, as good as the dialogue is in the comics, using the exact dialogue from the comics in the movies was, like, the one major mistake that they made.
- 41:23Matt: And yet, for 300, it worked perfectly.
- 41:27Tad Eggleston: Well, they didn't… they didn't keep.
- 41:28Matt: I don't think that…
- 41:29Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no.
- 41:32Josh Eiserike: I really liked, talking about capturing the spirit of the book, the most recent, Batman film, the Robert Pattinson one, where, like, for the first time.
- 41:42Josh Eiserike: in, you know, however many Batman movies there's been, we're getting Batman voiceover, which is just like reading the captions, and I'm like, yeah, yeah, oh yeah, that totally works.
- 41:52Tad Eggleston: Well, and we got… But some element of a Batman detective story.
- 41:57Josh Eiserike: Yes.
- 41:57Marisol: Yes.
- 41:59Tad Eggleston: The world's greatest detection.
- 42:00Marisol: Not even good.
- 42:01Tad Eggleston: got to be a detective.
- 42:02Josh Eiserike: Yes.
- 42:03Marisol: Yeah, like, not even the Batman voiceover, we see more than just…
- 42:08Marisol: Batman beating up people, and him swinging away and gliding through the air with his fancy gadgets and cape and his tank of a car.
- 42:19Marisol: We actually see him… Like, in the field, so to speak.
- 42:24Marisol: Doing detective work, and then…
- 42:27Tad Eggleston: Now, if he only comes out as matchstick.
- 42:33Marisol: Matches Melonia.
- 42:34Tad Eggleston: That's just Malone in, in, in, in the sequel?
- 42:38Marisol: Oh my god.
- 42:40Marisol: I'm putting it matches Malone.
- 42:43Marisol: I, I, I might cry.
- 42:46Marisol: We've done it. We've achieved greatness.
- 42:52Marisol: Through the course of how many movies, eventually hitting all aspects of Batman.
- 43:10Tad Eggleston: trying to think how to bring it back to why. I think… I think…
- 43:15Tad Eggleston: I think on one level, while this was enough to get us all excited about why, it also wasn't enough to feel comfortable talking about why
- 43:25Tad Eggleston: spoilery yet.
- 43:28Josh Eiserike: Yeah, I mean, I don't want to say anything. Like, knowing… knowing where the story goes, absolutely not.
- 43:34Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 43:35Marisol: There's so many questions, and I want to know.
- 43:37Josh Eiserike: Ask, ask, ask!
- 43:39Matt: And start reading!
- 43:40Josh Eiserike: coming lots.
- 43:42Marisol: What the fuck is the deal with Hiro and joining these psycho Amazons?
- 43:50Marisol: Oh, damn it, Lee!
- 43:52Tad Eggleston: But, but, I mean, like, and I haven't, I haven't…
- 43:57Tad Eggleston: read ahead recently, so I'm speaking without a lot of knowledge, but let's think about it. Hero…
- 44:03Tad Eggleston: Is definitely heterosexual.
- 44:06Marisol: Yes.
- 44:06Tad Eggleston: You know, one of the establishing character scenes for her is, like, her coworkers asking whether she slept with every firefighter in Boston.
- 44:16Tad Eggleston: But also, there's indication from Hiro herself, from her mom, from Yorick.
- 44:24Tad Eggleston: That she's actually really serious about this guy.
- 44:28Tad Eggleston: with.
- 44:30Tad Eggleston: And she just lost him.
- 44:32Tad Eggleston: And her dad, and her brother, and all the other men on Earth.
- 44:37Tad Eggleston: I think Kiro's just lost.
- 44:40Marisol: Which makes sense as to why she fell in with someone like Victoria.
- 44:44Tad Eggleston: The Amazons are willing to pick her up.
- 44:48Marisol: They provide, in a way, safety and comfort.
- 44:53Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 44:54Marisol: And that's how I took reading this, too, like.
- 44:55Tad Eggleston: And purpose.
- 44:57Marisol: There's that initial reaction of, are you insane? What the hell are you doing?
- 45:03Marisol: This is, in essence, a cult.
- 45:06Marisol: And then reading more…
- 45:08Marisol: kind of letting it sink in, like, yeah, no, she's just fucking traumatized. Yeah. She's traumatized and looking for a life raft in the middle of the ocean, and they've handed her a… a life preserver.
- 45:26Tad Eggleston: I… I gotta ask one quick question.
- 45:29Tad Eggleston: And this is… this is first for the men in the room, but then, Marisol, you get to be our bullshit detector.
- 45:35Marisol: Alright.
- 45:38Tad Eggleston: If it were flipped, And all the women in the world died.
- 45:43Tad Eggleston: Do you think we would handle our trauma
- 45:46Tad Eggleston: 1 tenth as well as these women have? Or do you think we would burn the whole fucking place down?
- 45:56Josh Eiserike: I mean, look at, you know, like,
- 46:00Josh Eiserike: just world leaders without getting political. Like, we've done a bang-up job
- 46:05Josh Eiserike: with women. I can't imagine it would be any…
- 46:12Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, I imagine we'd have nuclear holocaust almost immediately, because…
- 46:16Matt: next day.
- 46:17Josh Eiserike: BP.
- 46:18Tad Eggleston: Because everybody would blame everybody else. So, if all of the women died, probably within the next 24 hours, all the men would be dead as well.
- 46:28Matt: Hmm.
- 46:28Tad Eggleston: Just because…
- 46:30Josh Eiserike: That only gets you one issue.
- 46:32Matt: All heterosexual male.
- 46:35Marisol: In short.
- 46:35Tad Eggleston: No, no, no, no, because the gay men would be caught in it, too, because nuclear bombs don't care about your sexuality.
- 46:43Matt: Yeah, but I think, I think they would handle it way better than the heterosexual males.
- 46:46Tad Eggleston: Sure, but it wouldn't matter! Right, right, right.
- 46:50Matt: I'm just saying, if Lindsey Graham was alive when it happened, he might be like, don't push the button!
- 46:57Tad Eggleston: No, he's the exception as far as gay men go.
- 47:03Matt: No, no, no, don't push the button.
- 47:05Tad Eggleston: Probably why he was never willing to come out.
- 47:08Matt: Yeah, exactly.
- 47:10Lee Woods: I…
- 47:11Marisol: funny.
- 47:11Lee Woods: I disagree.
- 47:14Tad Eggleston: I think we'd survive.
- 47:15Lee Woods: I… well, no… No, no, no!
- 47:20Matt: You don't agree.
- 47:21Tad Eggleston: THAT much!
- 47:24Lee Woods: I don't know if we would collapse the next day, and I'm gonna look at it a little bit more logistically, I guess, and…
- 47:34Lee Woods: at the risk of sounding callous, especially from my, sort of, American lens or brain.
- 47:40Lee Woods: Is that we're predominantly men anyway.
- 47:43Lee Woods: In government, in positions of power, and across many different countries and nations as well. Do I think that there's going to be speculation that other people did it? Of course. 100%, right?
- 47:55Lee Woods: Maybe this is the sort of hopeful idealist in me that I think we would want to investigate.
- 48:03Lee Woods: I don't… I don't know, and just to be clear, investigate, like, what happened to the women.
- 48:11Marisol: Right.
- 48:12Lee Woods: If they… if… We found out that there's one woman alive.
- 48:18Lee Woods: I don't want to think about those possibilities.
- 48:21Matt: I don't want to be her.
- 48:22Marisol: No, no one does.
- 48:24Tad Eggleston: Nooooo!
- 48:26Matt: No! That's an awful story to solve.
- 48:28Lee Woods: I'll leave it at that.
- 48:29Marisol: Yo…
- 48:30Lee Woods: but yeah, I…
- 48:34Lee Woods: Do I think we'll get much more aggressive? Absolutely. But I think we would nuke each other later.
- 48:41Tad Eggleston: I don't think it'd take that long.
- 48:43Josh Eiserike: Lee is… Lee is giving it 5 issues.
- 48:48Lee Woods: Oh, she's tough.
- 48:50Matt: issue mini-series.
- 48:51Tad Eggleston: I, I, I, I do love the, the end of… of the… the…
- 48:59Tad Eggleston: First issue, the Welcome to the Unmanned World. In the summer of 2002, a plague unknown… of unknown origin destroyed every last sperm, fetus, and fully developed mammal with a Y chromosome.
- 49:11Tad Eggleston: With the apparent exception of one young man and his pet, a male capuchin monkey.
- 49:16Tad Eggleston: This gender side instantaneously exterminated 48% of the global population, or approximately 2.9 billion men. 495 of the Fortune CEO… 500 CEOs are now dead, as are 99% of the world's landowners.
- 49:33Tad Eggleston: In the United States alone, more than 95% of all commercial pilots, truck drivers, and ship captains died, as did 92% of all violent felons. Internationally, 99% of all mechanics, electricians, and construction workers are now deceased.
- 49:48Tad Eggleston: Though, 51% of the planet's agricultural labor force is still alive.
- 49:55Tad Eggleston: 14 nations, including Spain and Germany, have women soldiers who have served in ground combat units. None of the United States' nearly 200,000 female troops have ever participated in ground combat. Australia, Norway, and Sweden are the only countries that have women serving on board submarines. In Israel, all women between the ages of 18 and 26 have performed compulsory military service.
- 50:18Tad Eggleston: In the Israeli Defense Force, for at least 1 year and 9 months before the plague, at least 3 Palestinian suicide bombers had been women.
- 50:26Tad Eggleston: Worldwide, 85% of all government representatives are now dead, as are 100% of Catholic priests, Muslim Mamans, and Orthodox Jewish rabbis.
- 50:38Matt: And that's the best part of the story.
- 50:47Marisol: Yeah, if the script was flipped, I don't think it would take too long.
- 50:52Marisol: Before annihilation, honestly, and it's just me thinking of the way
- 50:58Marisol: the world is now, and how… mostly, I guess, for men, how you guys are taught to
- 51:07Marisol: Handle yourselves, and, like.
- 51:10Tad Eggleston: You mean hit first and ask questions later?
- 51:13Marisol: Yeah, and, like, take care of yourselves, or…
- 51:16Marisol: I just get by day to day, And…
- 51:21Marisol: from a lot of what I've seen, the biggest and only emotion, I guess, men are quote-unquote allowed to have is anger.
- 51:32Matt: It's true.
- 51:33Marisol: It is the only one men are allowed to have. You're not allowed to cry. You're not supposed to cry, because men don't cry.
- 51:39Marisol: Yeah, that's cool.
- 51:39Tad Eggleston: cry.
- 51:40Marisol: Be all in touch with your feelings, because that's for women.
- 51:44Josh Eiserike: Only we had a therapist on the Zoom, but yeah.
- 51:46Marisol: I know.
- 51:47Marisol: If only!
- 51:51Marisol: But I do think that… If… yeah, if this were flipped, it would not take very long.
- 51:59Marisol: Because in my mind, it would be… Not so much a… blame game, That does everybody in.
- 52:10Marisol: It would be a grab for power.
- 52:13Matt: Yep.
- 52:13Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 52:14Tad Eggleston: Well, and I think…
- 52:15Marisol: Everyone fighting for their peace, fighting to get ahead, consequences be damned, and a very selfish way of going about, you know.
- 52:29Matt: down to subjugate them.
- 52:31Tad Eggleston: Right, I think you'd have 3 warring tendencies among the men, and very few people being loud and trying to fight against them. You'd have
- 52:41Tad Eggleston: One set of men who was going after power, one set of men who was going after revenge, and one set of men who believed that they had to kill all of their enemies before their enemies killed all of them.
- 52:53Josh Eiserike: And then the one guy who just wants to watch the world burn.
- 52:57Marisol: Yep.
- 52:58Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 52:58Marisol: 1.
- 52:59Tad Eggleston: Who might be willing to hit the first red button?
- 53:04Marisol: But for sure.
- 53:05Tad Eggleston: I mean, the… probably the oldest leader who had nuclear capabilities would just say, fuck it. Yeah.
- 53:14Marisol: And I mean, honestly, we wouldn't have a story if we were following the last woman on Earth.
- 53:20Marisol: Because almost every woman I know, their end-of-the-world apocalypse plan is to take themselves out.
- 53:26Matt: Yep.
- 53:27Marisol: And be done with it.
- 53:29Josh Eiserike: I mean, and Marisol, use your bullshit detector on this statement, but…
- 53:34Josh Eiserike: It doesn't seem like there will be much humor or much heart in that kind of story.
- 53:38Marisol: Oh, absolutely not. Absolutely not.
- 53:42Marisol: given… speaking as a woman and this shit I've heard my friends, my girlfriend's experience, and have seen and experienced myself.
- 53:52Marisol: No, it would be a horror story.
- 53:56Marisol: And it would not last very long.
- 53:59Marisol: Because, again, we… we all…
- 54:02Marisol: I don't know how much, but we all see the shit that happens in the news.
- 54:06Marisol: The… we are at least all aware, if not experiencing directly, we know someone who has.
- 54:13Marisol: Experience some type of… Harassment or violence, what have you.
- 54:20Marisol: Particularly a woman at the hands of a man, and we've heard the most atrocious stories
- 54:27Marisol: Of what men do when they think no one's watching, and when they think they're alone.
- 54:33Marisol: It's why they don't like to hire a lot of, male coroners.
- 54:39Matt: That's true.
- 54:39Marisol: Because they don't just stop when you're living, or you're dead, or even if you're human.
- 54:46Marisol: Like, those guys who fucked that giant lizard that one time…
- 54:50Josh Eiserike: Wait, what?
- 54:51Tad Eggleston: Yeah, that was a thing.
- 54:53Marisol: Yeah, you didn't hear about that?
- 54:55Josh Eiserike: I was like, baby.
- 54:55Matt: there's lizards.
- 54:56Marisol: Yeah, these two guys, I forget where, this was a while ago, they fucked, like, a big ol' Komodo dragon or something.
- 55:04Marisol: And fucked it to death.
- 55:06Lee Woods: I'm not googling that.
- 55:08Josh Eiserike: No, no.
- 55:09Marisol: I don't want to.
- 55:10Josh Eiserike: I, I am… I…
- 55:12Tad Eggleston: I will just trust you.
- 55:14Marisol: Yes.
- 55:14Josh Eiserike: I remembering back to my, senior year of college, I took human sexuality, and one of the things the professor said, he was great, the higher you go up on the food chain, the more common it is.
- 55:28Lee Woods: Yeah.
- 55:29Josh Eiserike: Num.
- 55:30Marisol: And just with… just with that, and that's what would make…
- 55:34Marisol: This, if Y was about The Last Woman such a horror story? There would be…
- 55:41Marisol: I think no way to make a situation like that light enough?
- 55:48Marisol: To allow for comedy.
- 55:50Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 55:51Marisol: This would be either… you gotta make the choice to take yourself out right here, right now.
- 55:57Tad Eggleston: Well, and your comment on.
- 55:59Marisol: Going into hiding and fighting for survival.
- 56:01Tad Eggleston: Makes me really, like, not like the vision of what they'd be doing with all the corpses.
- 56:08Marisol: Yeah… Yeah…
- 56:13Tad Eggleston: they wouldn't have their RFK crematorium.
- 56:16Matt: No.
- 56:16Marisol: No, they were not.
- 56:18Matt: Why burn it when we can fuck it?
- 56:21Marisol: Exactly.
- 56:24Tad Eggleston: Scientists would be looking at ways to preserve.
- 56:27Matt: Yeah, we were reincarnating. We were gonna have zombies.
- 56:34Marisol: Exactly, and that's what makes it so…
- 56:37Marisol: Horrible, like, why could only happen
- 56:41Marisol: with Yorick, with there being a last man on Earth.
- 56:47Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 56:48Marisol: Because here you can have an actual story.
- 56:53Tad Eggleston: Never really off.
- 56:54Marisol: woman on it.
- 56:54Tad Eggleston: B.
- 56:55Marisol: It doesn't get very far.
- 56:58Marisol: Okay.
- 57:00Tad Eggleston: No X, the last woman.
- 57:03Marisol: No, unfortunately not.
- 57:07Marisol: And I don't mean to bring down the mood or anything, though.
- 57:10Tad Eggleston: You guys got really weird.
- 57:11Matt: Maybe a one-page comic. We should do that. We should have a 22 panels, X the last woman, one-page comic. That would be hilarious.
- 57:19Josh Eiserike: It's one page, one…
- 57:20Tad Eggleston: You gotta… you gotta draw… you gotta… you gotta draw all 22 panels.
- 57:26Tad Eggleston: To tell the story, Matt.
- 57:28Matt: Yep.
- 57:28Tad Eggleston: And I can work on it.
- 57:30Matt: Yup.
- 57:31Marisol: 20 Panels are just the lead-up to finding out what happened. 21, full black panel. That's it.
- 57:38Tad Eggleston: No, no, because we gotta use the actual 22 panels, so let me pull up my 22 panels here.
- 57:48Tad Eggleston: Because ideally, we use them in order, which works well, because the second to last is the TV screen, or the newspaper.
- 57:58Tad Eggleston: So, so, like…
- 58:04Marisol: And then black, and then the end.
- 58:06Tad Eggleston: Well, no, no, see, if we wanted it to actually… yeah, you got one, that's right. If we wanted it to actually…
- 58:13Tad Eggleston: Actually be… be funny and… and…
- 58:17Tad Eggleston: And… and happy, we'd have to have, like… The last panel be… There's… there's the share button.
- 58:26Tad Eggleston: the newspaper is, like, end of Earth, whatever, and then the contrast panel would be, like.
- 58:34Tad Eggleston: The two women, or the one woman on the moon.
- 58:39Tad Eggleston: Because she saw what was hap… she saw the writing on the wall and got the hell out of it.
- 58:43Marisol: And decided to get the hell out.
- 58:47Tad Eggleston: It's just like, well, it's pretty up here, and I got 40 years' worth of food.
- 58:53Marisol: That's all I need.
- 58:56Marisol: Stop!
- 58:59Tad Eggleston: So, yeah, okay. I'll think on that, Matt.
- 59:04Tad Eggleston: X the last woman.
- 59:06Marisol: Jesus.
- 59:07Tad Eggleston: Panels story.
- 59:11Matt: Yeah.
- 59:11Marisol: Oh.
- 59:13Tad Eggleston: I think you could put a mushroom cloud in the 3-stage one, couldn't you?
- 59:19Tad Eggleston: Because it feels… actually, to be fair, it should be, like, mushroom clouds
- 59:26Tad Eggleston: in, like, the three in a row, the frame, the white bende, and the three stage. Maybe multiple mushroom clouds in the three-stage.
- 59:40Matt: Yeah, because…
- 59:42Matt: You don't have to be the country with the most nukes, you just have to have one, and then everyone else is gonna send theirs.
- 59:48Tad Eggleston: Right. Right.
- 59:51Tad Eggleston: Actually, the frame, it would be, like, the mushroom cloud is reflected in the window, and you'd see the guy behind it.
- 59:58Tad Eggleston: And then it'd be, like… Oh shit, there goes the neighborhood, and more mushroom clouds.
- 1:00:07Marisol: Yes.
- 1:00:10Marisol: And…
- 1:00:13Tad Eggleston: And then… and then just a woman and a cat and… and… and a glass of wine on the moon.
- 1:00:21Marisol: It's all you need.
- 1:00:22Tad Eggleston: Maybe have one panel earlier where you see her breaking into NASA?
- 1:00:28Matt: Steel rechargeable batteries.
- 1:00:31Marisol: Yes.
- 1:00:34Marisol: Well, bringing it back around to why, I will say a very satisfying part of it was seeing Victoria with an axe in her temple.
- 1:00:42Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah.
- 1:00:43Matt: Oh, yeah.
- 1:00:43Tad Eggleston: Yeah, what's fine.
- 1:00:45Tad Eggleston: Thronk!
- 1:00:47Tad Eggleston: Click. Long.
- 1:00:49Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:00:50Marisol: Like, that was just beautiful.
- 1:00:52Marisol: Like, yes, good, I hated this bitch, get her out of here.
- 1:00:57Marisol: This fucking cult leader.
- 1:01:01Marisol: And I do love, also, how that.
- 1:01:03Tad Eggleston: Though I also felt…
- 1:01:04Marisol: of Marisville were, like, wanting to take in the Amazons that were there and rehabilitate them, and…
- 1:01:12Tad Eggleston: But I also, I also felt for Victoria, because, like…
- 1:01:17Tad Eggleston: To feel that strongly, you know that all the things that she says that, like.
- 1:01:24Tad Eggleston: They all went through, at the very least, she went through.
- 1:01:28Marisol: Oh, for sure.
- 1:01:31Marisol: And that's why she would have these just short feelings about it.
- 1:01:34Tad Eggleston: Yorick might not have ever been sexually inappropriate to his sister, but if Victoria had brothers, they were sexually inappropriate to her.
- 1:01:45Marisol: Yes.
- 1:01:46Matt: Clearly.
- 1:01:48Tad Eggleston: You know…
- 1:01:50Marisol: And, like, just the way she was talking to Hiro when they were one-on-one.
- 1:01:55Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:01:55Marisol: Was very telling.
- 1:01:59Marisol: of whatever traumas Victoria had experienced.
- 1:02:03Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:02:04Marisol: pre… gender side, I guess.
- 1:02:08Marisol: You could call it.
- 1:02:11Marisol: Cause you don't get to be that… Fanatical, without either…
- 1:02:17Marisol: Some huge trauma happening, and you finding your way to cope about it?
- 1:02:22Marisol: Or… you just get this idea from this… these things you've experienced, and then you take it and run, and you get into your little…
- 1:02:33Marisol: Echo chamber of people who regurgitate that back to you, and then those feelings just get stronger and stronger and stronger.
- 1:02:43Tad Eggleston: Alright, before we wrap, this is… this is mostly a Marisol question, because…
- 1:02:48Tad Eggleston: Lee has read everything recently, and therefore has to be excluded. Josh, I think, has the best memory of us, so he should probably be excluded. And Matt often has a good memory, so…
- 1:03:00Tad Eggleston: Like, this is a question that's only good for people who don't know the answer, and I don't remember, so I don't know the answer, so I might give thoughts, but we know Marisol doesn't have the answer.
- 1:03:14Tad Eggleston: How did you feel about the end cliffhanger?
- 1:03:17Tad Eggleston: And discovering that the person who's been feeding
- 1:03:21Tad Eggleston: the Israeli military information on where York is, Is… his mother.
- 1:03:35Marisol: I… ugh.
- 1:03:38Marisol: It hurt.
- 1:03:41Marisol: It hurt. I didn't know it was her.
- 1:03:44Matt: You don't know if it's nefarious or not.
- 1:03:47Tad Eggleston: No, you don't, you don't, and it's… and it definitely also throws shade on 355, and makes you have to wonder about that, and it also made me wonder, like, and I honestly can't remember. Did I read it differently?
- 1:04:05Tad Eggleston: during an era where Israel wasn't such a bad actor?
- 1:04:10Matt: Israel's always been a bad actor.
- 1:04:12Tad Eggleston: Yeah, but…
- 1:04:13Josh Eiserike: I used to live in Israel, so can we have that conversation offline, please, and thank you.
- 1:04:18Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, I, I, I, I wasn't, wasn't…
- 1:04:22Tad Eggleston: Trying… and I… but there's a difference in the way it is now versus the way it was then.
- 1:04:30Matt: It just…
- 1:04:30Tad Eggleston: My only question was whether it winds up tempering my thoughts. And I don't know that it does, because I know when it was written.
- 1:04:42Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:04:43Tad Eggleston: But how'd you feel with that turn at the end? How it…
- 1:04:50Marisol: Ugh.
- 1:04:51Marisol: I'm… Honestly, it… More than just it hurting, it pissed me off.
- 1:04:58Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:04:59Marisol: Cause part of me is, like… On the one hand.
- 1:05:04Marisol: It would make sense if she was giving those coordinates and that information
- 1:05:09Marisol: to someone within, like, the US government to go keep an eye on him, besides 355?
- 1:05:16Marisol: I don't know why she would do that, but, I don't know, just…
- 1:05:18Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:05:19Marisol: She's a mother, that's her son, she wants to keep an eye on him, especially since he's the last man on Earth.
- 1:05:25Marisol: But to feed them to… A different country's…
- 1:05:32Marisol: Military, essentially? Military? Militia? What are they? Military.
- 1:05:36Tad Eggleston: Well, it's a military, and, and, like, as is laid out in that, that, that…
- 1:05:44Tad Eggleston: the end of the first issue that I just read. It's arguably the only fully functioning military left on Earth.
- 1:05:52Josh Eiserike: Yes.
- 1:05:53Tad Eggleston: You know, so, I mean, that has to be considered.
- 1:05:56Tad Eggleston: Yeah. It's not like she's got strong options if she thinks she needs… and they're absolutely an ally at the time, or should be.
- 1:06:06Tad Eggleston: considered an ally.
- 1:06:08Marisol: And my whole thing is, too, it's like.
- 1:06:11Marisol: I'm confused as to whether or not his mother knows that… I… I don't want to butcher this woman's name, I don't know how to pronounce it. The… the main military woman is…
- 1:06:24Marisol: Salon?
- 1:06:25Tad Eggleston: Fair.
- 1:06:26Tad Eggleston: Oh, boy. Oh, you were trying to go for the last name.
- 1:06:28Josh Eiserike: We don't… we don't know her real name.
- 1:06:31Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:06:31Marisol: That's true.
- 1:06:32Josh Eiserike: Can I interject, please?
- 1:06:34Tad Eggleston: Sure.
- 1:06:35Marisol: Yes.
- 1:06:35Josh Eiserike: I thought, in re-reading, I thought… and I… years ago, I thought he got the Israeli stuff really, really well, having lived there, like, family, friends, being Israeli. I asked him about that. He just did a lot of research, which surprised me.
- 1:06:52Tad Eggleston: He's a… he's a researcher.
- 1:06:54Josh Eiserike: Is it just like, yeah, nope, this, this feels real.
- 1:06:59Josh Eiserike: But the parallel that I saw in this read-through that I didn't pick up in my initial read is we don't know Alter's real name, and we don't know 355's real name.
- 1:07:10Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 1:07:10Josh Eiserike: And I thought that was…
- 1:07:12Marisol: That's true.
- 1:07:12Josh Eiserike: Fascinating.
- 1:07:14Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:07:15Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:07:18Tad Eggleston: That is awesome.
- 1:07:19Josh Eiserike: That's all I will say. Sorry, Marisol.
- 1:07:21Marisol: No, it's fine. My thing was just, like, does…
- 1:07:26Marisol: Durek's mom know that Alter's main goal is to kill him, and has…
- 1:07:32Marisol: This much, like, hatred, and just so vehemently hunting him down, like… To what end?
- 1:07:39Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:07:41Marisol: What is the point of her giving this information?
- 1:07:45Marisol: To alter.
- 1:07:51Marisol: And now we're not gonna know until next month, or at least I'm not.
- 1:07:53Tad Eggleston: Next month!
- 1:07:54Tad Eggleston: Because I will say, I will say that the biggest result was, rather than stopping, I've read, like.
- 1:08:01Tad Eggleston: An issue farther, because I immediately loaded up the next book and kept.
- 1:08:05Josh Eiserike: I'm going to the library tomorrow.
- 1:08:07Tad Eggleston: Right. I heard some…
- 1:08:10Marisol: I had to speed through this one after work.

- 1:08:15Marisol: During work hours.
- 1:08:17Tad Eggleston: Right, the biggest result of, of, of, of that, that…
- 1:08:20Tad Eggleston: Cliffhanger at the end there was like, oh, no, no, no, I need to keep going.
- 1:08:30Tad Eggleston: Yo.
- 1:08:30Marisol: Yeah.
- 1:08:31Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 1:08:32Marisol: seeing where it went to, but then I had to make dinner.
- 1:08:35Tad Eggleston: We still have at least 3 more months until more Saga, so… so…
- 1:08:40Tad Eggleston: More Why the Last Man next month.
- 1:08:45Marisol: Hopefully I don't see what happens with these astronauts.
- 1:08:47Tad Eggleston: I'm gonna say right now, like, everybody keep us posted as you finish volumes. We'll do as many volumes as people finish.
- 1:08:54Josh Eiserike: So, can I ask a clarifying question?
- 1:08:57Tad Eggleston: Sure.
- 1:08:57Josh Eiserike: I'm… I… I have these, you guys are reading more like omnibus, omnibusi?

- 1:09:09Josh Eiserike: No, I agree.
- 1:09:10Tad Eggleston: 10 of those…
- 1:09:11Josh Eiserike: So, okay, so I read exactly what I was supposed to read, so now we're doing 3 and 4.
- 1:09:15Tad Eggleston: Right. Which one of those…
- 1:09:17Josh Eiserike: why you were like, wait a second, the Russian lady, that comes in this one. But I… but you read ahead.
- 1:09:23Marisol: Yeah.
- 1:09:24Tad Eggleston: It might have been from just reading ahead, it might have been the.
- 1:09:26Josh Eiserike: The first…
- 1:09:27Tad Eggleston: chapter. And that's the problem with having read a head. Yeah, alright, so…
- 1:09:32Josh Eiserike: I'll do 3 and 4 for, next…
- 1:09:34Tad Eggleston: Definitely 3 and 4, but again, like, if you get them done sooner rather than later.
- 1:09:40Tad Eggleston: Post it in the chat. I'm through Volume 2, headed to Volume 3.
- 1:09:45Marisol: Oh, gosh.
- 1:09:46Tad Eggleston: Cuz… cuz, like, Lee went through all 5 of them.
- 1:09:51Tad Eggleston: He's waiting. Look at his face. He's the kid in the comedy shop going, please finish, please finish, please!
- 1:09:59Lee Woods: I heard so many questions!
- 1:10:03Josh Eiserike: Lee, Lee, I want… I want just a yes or no answer from you.
- 1:10:07Josh Eiserike: Okay. Did you like the ending?
- 1:10:13Lee Woods: No.
- 1:10:17Josh Eiserike: I will say, I remember when the ending came out, and I'm not saying anything about it.
- 1:10:23Josh Eiserike: I read an interview where.
- 1:10:24Marisol: Spoilers.
- 1:10:25Josh Eiserike: Where Brian said, this is not the ending I would have written today.
- 1:10:30Josh Eiserike: but I'm honoring the boy who pitched this.
- 1:10:34Josh Eiserike: Back in 2002, and this is the ending that he came up with, so this is the ending of the series. Essentially, is what he said.
- 1:10:40Lee Woods: I would love to explore that.
- 1:10:42Marisol: Mmm.
- 1:10:43Tad Eggleston: We will soon. Interesting.
- 1:10:46Josh Eiserike: I feel like I'm talking about Marco's death now, like, you know, All the years, huh?
- 1:10:51Marisol: Foreshouting without actually saying anything.
- 1:10:54Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 1:10:54Tad Eggleston: For 22 Panels, this has been the Saga Book Club, and we've just discussed Why the Last Man, and we will see you after the next page.
