- 0:04Welcome to Voices of Life, a ministry of the
- 0:07Church for Life, and I'm your host, Pastor David.
- 0:10Today we begin week 9 of our 12 -week journey,
- 0:14Living with Purpose, A God -Centered Life. And
- 0:17this week, we're stepping into a theme that every
- 0:21believer needs, every family needs, and every
- 0:23church needs. It's community. Because God never
- 0:28designed you to walk through life alone. You
- 0:32were created for connection, for belonging, fellowship,
- 0:35for a shared purpose. This week we're going to
- 0:40rediscover the beauty, the strength, and the
- 0:43calling of living with purpose in community.
- 0:48If you've ever felt isolated, unseen, felt disconnected,
- 0:54or even wondered where you fit, this week's for
- 0:57you. From the very beginning, God said something
- 1:01profound. It is not good for man to be alone.
- 1:07Before sin entered the world, before brokenness,
- 1:10before fear, and before shame, God looked at
- 1:14a perfect creation and said, something's missing.
- 1:21Community. You were created for relationship
- 1:25with God and people. Community is not optional.
- 1:30It is essential. You need people who will pray
- 1:34for you. You need people that will encourage
- 1:37you, challenge you, walk with you, and people
- 1:43who will remind you of who you are when you forget.
- 1:48And others need you. Your voice, presence, gifts,
- 1:54your compassion, your story. Community is not
- 2:00just what you receive. Community is also what
- 2:04you give. Let's anchor ourselves in the Word
- 2:09of God. Hebrews 10, 24 -25 says, Let's consider
- 2:18how we may spur one another on toward love, good
- 2:23deeds, not giving up, meeting together. as some
- 2:29are a habit of doing, but encouraging, encouraging
- 2:34one another. Community is where encouragement
- 2:39grows, faith grows, purpose grows. You cannot
- 2:43grow in isolation. You grow in connection. We
- 2:48live in a world that is more connected digitally
- 2:51than ever before and more disconnected emotionally
- 2:55than ever before. People are surrounded by noise,
- 3:00by starving, a starving for belonging. Loneliness
- 3:08is not just sadness. Loneliness is a spiritual
- 3:11hunger. And God's answer to loneliness is community.
- 3:17The enemy loves isolation because isolation weakens
- 3:21faith. It distorts your perspective. It magnifies
- 3:25the fear and amplifies your insecurity. But community
- 3:30strengthens your faith. It restores perspective.
- 3:34It helps you build courage. It heals your heart.
- 3:39You were not meant to fight battles alone. There
- 3:45is something powerful about being known, I mean
- 3:49truly known, not the version of you that you
- 3:55show the world, but the real you. Your inner
- 4:00struggles, your victories, your questions, your
- 4:04hopes, your wounds, and your dreams. Dreaming
- 4:10is one of the best things we can do because it
- 4:16gives us the hope of what can happen in the future.
- 4:21And with our dreams, we can shape that future.
- 4:25But we need community because community is where...
- 4:29you can fully know that you're loved, that you're
- 4:35appreciated, that you're important, that you
- 4:39count. Close your eyes for a moment. Think of
- 4:45people God has placed in your life. Of those
- 4:52people, who are the ones that encourage you?
- 4:56Which ones challenge you? Who prays for you?
- 5:03Who listens to you? And who walks beside you?
- 5:09Now ask yourself, who do you encourage? Who do
- 5:16you support? Who do you pray for? Community is
- 5:20mutual, it's shared, and it's sacred. It is not
- 5:24unilateral. It's bilateral. Or multilateral.
- 5:30Let's pray. Father, thank you for creating us
- 5:35for community. Thank you for the people you've
- 5:39placed in our lives. Heal the places where we
- 5:45have felt alone. Restore the connections that
- 5:49have been broken. Strengthen the relationships
- 5:52that help us grow. Teach us to love deeply, serve
- 5:58faithfully. And walk together in unity. In Jesus'
- 6:04name, amen. Let's go a little bit deeper. We're
- 6:15going to go very deep. We're going to be honest.
- 6:17We're going to go to the places where community
- 6:19becomes difficult. Because community is beautiful.
- 6:24But community is also messy. Community is healing.
- 6:29But community can also hurt. Community is God's
- 6:34gift, but it requires courage. We're going to
- 6:42talk now about barriers, wounds, and fears. So
- 6:46let's get started. Community is hard because
- 6:50people are imperfect. People disappoint us. They
- 6:54misunderstand us. They fail us. And some people
- 6:59just like to hurt us. The deepest wounds come
- 7:05from people we trusted the most. And then they
- 7:09betrayed us. So we pull back. We protect ourselves.
- 7:14We build walls. We isolate. We say things like,
- 7:18I'm better off alone. I don't need anyone. I
- 7:22can handle life by myself. But those statements
- 7:26aren't strength. They are scars. They are self
- 7:31-protection. They are survival mechanisms, a
- 7:35reaction. They are signs that something in us
- 7:38has been wounded. Some of you listening today
- 7:43carry wounds from community, a betrayal, a broken
- 7:47friendship, a church hurt, family conflict, a
- 7:51season of rejection, a moment when someone should
- 7:55have been there but wasn't. And those wounds
- 7:59don't just disappear. They shape how you trust.
- 8:02They shape how you relate, how you open up, and
- 8:07how you connect. But hear this. God does not
- 8:11want your wounds to define your relationships.
- 8:13God wants to heal what hurt you so you can love
- 8:19again. One of the biggest barriers to community
- 8:24is the fear of being known. Because being known
- 8:28feels risky. What if they judge me? What if they
- 8:35misunderstand me or reject me? What if they don't
- 8:39like the real me? So we hide. We wear masks.
- 8:44We pretend. We put these personas on. We keep
- 8:47conversations shallow. We stay guarded. But you
- 8:51cannot experience true community while hiding.
- 8:55You cannot be loved if you are never known. And
- 8:59you cannot be known if you never open up your
- 9:03heart. Another barrier is a lie of self -sufficiency.
- 9:09The lie that says, I don't need anyone. I can
- 9:16handle this alone. I'm strong by myself. But
- 9:21that is not strength. That is isolation disguised
- 9:25as independence. Even Jesus did not walk alone.
- 9:29He surrounded himself with community, with disciples,
- 9:32friends, and people. He poured into the people
- 9:36who walked with him. If Jesus needed community,
- 9:40so do you. When we withdraw from community, something
- 9:46happens inside us. Our thoughts get heavier.
- 9:51Our fears get louder. Our perspective gets distorted.
- 9:56Our hope gets smaller. Isolation magnifies everything
- 10:01that is painful and minimizes everything that
- 10:04is hopeful. Isolation is not protection. Isolation
- 10:09is spiritual erosion. And the enemy loves isolation
- 10:15because isolated believers are vulnerable to
- 10:19thoughts and attacks of different types you were
- 10:26not created to fight battles alone re -entering
- 10:32community takes courage it takes courage and
- 10:35trust again courage to open up again courage
- 10:39to risk again courage to be vulnerable again
- 10:42but courage is not absence of fear courage is
- 10:47It's choosing a connection. Even when fear whispers
- 10:51to you, stay alone. Courage is choosing healing
- 10:57over hiding. Courage is choosing belonging over
- 11:02isolation. Courage is choosing God's design over
- 11:07your wounds. I want you to imagine a wall in
- 11:13front of you. It is a wall that you built to
- 11:17protect yourself. A wall made of past hurts,
- 11:22disappointments, betrayals, and fears. Now imagine
- 11:28Jesus standing beside you. He places his hand
- 11:33on that wall. He then says, you don't need this
- 11:39anymore. Let me heal what you've been protecting.
- 11:46Now imagine one brick coming down, then another,
- 11:50and then another. Slowly, gently, and patiently.
- 11:55This is how healing begins. One brick at a time.
- 12:02Let us pray. Father, you see every wound that
- 12:08has shaped us. You see every fear that has held
- 12:13us back. You see every wall we've built. And
- 12:19we build these walls to protect ourselves. Heal
- 12:23the places where community hurts us. Restore
- 12:27the places where trust was broken. Give us courage
- 12:31to reconnect and the strength to open our hearts
- 12:36again. Give us wisdom to build healthy relationships.
- 12:42Teach us that we're not alone. Teach us that
- 12:45we do belong. Teach us that community is your
- 12:49gift to us. In Jesus' name, amen. Let's talk
- 13:00about what a healthy community looks like. I
- 13:08think a healthy community... has to be complementary
- 13:12to us. And we've got to figure out how to build
- 13:16it, how to sustain it, and how to become someone
- 13:20who strengthens the people around you. Because
- 13:23community is not just something you join community,
- 13:26it's something you build, you have to nurture
- 13:28it, you have to protect it. Healthy community
- 13:31is not necessarily a perfect community, but a
- 13:35healthy community is an honest community. It's
- 13:38grace -filled community, Christ -centered community.
- 13:42Healthy community is a place where people can
- 13:46grow, not a place where people must pretend.
- 13:50It's a place where truth is spoken with love,
- 13:53where accountability is offered with compassion,
- 13:57where encouragement is given with sincerity.
- 14:02Healthy community is not built on perfection.
- 14:04Healthy community is built on presence. There
- 14:10are four pillars that hold up a healthy community.
- 14:14Four pillars. First pillar is love. Love that
- 14:22is patient, kind, that forgives, and love that
- 14:27stays. The second pillar is trust. Trust that
- 14:34is earned, that is protected, that is honored.
- 14:41The third pillar is humility. Humility that listens,
- 14:46humility that apologizes, humility that learns.
- 14:51And that fourth pillar is commitment. Commitment
- 14:56that shows up, commitment that stays engaged.
- 15:00It doesn't run when things get hard. These four
- 15:04pillars create a community that reflects Christ.
- 15:09Healthy community doesn't happen by accident.
- 15:11It happens through intention. It happens through
- 15:14choices. It happens through people who say, I'm
- 15:18here, I'm committed, I'm willing to grow, I'm
- 15:21willing to love, I'm willing to forgive. Community
- 15:25grows when people show up. Community deepens
- 15:29when people open up. And community strengthens
- 15:34when people lift each other up. That's why we
- 15:39need each other. That's why being alone is not
- 15:43the answer. You are not just a participant in
- 15:47the community. You are a contributor to the community.
- 15:51Your presence matters. Your voice matters. Your
- 15:55gifts matter. You bring that compassion and encouragement.
- 16:00That all matters. You bring something that no
- 16:03one else brings. It's unique to you. You carry
- 16:07something. that someone else needs. You are part
- 16:11of the body of Christ and the body is incomplete
- 16:14without you. If you want to strengthen community,
- 16:20here are three simple practices. Be present and
- 16:27show up. That's practice number one. Even when
- 16:32you're tired, even when you're unsure, even when
- 16:35it's easier just to stay home. Presence builds
- 16:38trust. It shows commitment. Second practice is
- 16:43be real. Share your story. Share your struggles,
- 16:47your victories. Authenticity builds connection.
- 16:54People can tell when you're being genuine and
- 16:58when you're being fake, or as I call it, plastic.
- 17:04The third one is be encouraging. Speak life,
- 17:09hope, and grace. Encouragement builds strength.
- 17:15These three practices can transform a community.
- 17:21Healthy community is not one -sided, it is mutual.
- 17:25You support others and others support you. You
- 17:28pray for others and others pray for you. You
- 17:32carry burdens and others carry yours. You celebrate
- 17:36those victories. and others celebrate with you
- 17:39this is the beauty of the body of christ we rise
- 17:45together we grow together we heal together and
- 17:48we walk together take a moment and think of someone
- 17:54in your community someone who needs encouragement
- 17:59and your support someone who needs prayer or
- 18:03needs a friend Now ask the Holy Spirit, Lord,
- 18:09how can I build them up? Do I send them a text?
- 18:16Do I call them? Do I say a prayer for them? Do
- 18:20we share a meal? Do I be a good listening ear
- 18:24for them? Do I say just a simple word of kindness?
- 18:30Any of those things and your community grows.
- 18:34It grows one act of love at a time. It just takes
- 18:38you to take that step and implement something,
- 18:44to do something. Let's pray. Father, thank you
- 18:52for the gift of community. Thank you for the
- 18:54people you've placed in our lives. Teach us to
- 18:58build healthy relationships. Teach us to love
- 19:01well. Teach us to listen well. Teach us to encourage
- 19:07well. Make us people who strengthen others. Make
- 19:12us people who bring unity. Make us people who
- 19:16reflect Christ in every relationship. In Jesus'
- 19:21name, amen. We've talked about the essentials
- 19:34of our community. And now, let's talk a little
- 19:41bit more about what community is as a calling.
- 19:48A calling for us. Community is not a suggestion.
- 19:54Community is a calling. Jesus said, by this everyone
- 19:59will know. that you are my disciples if you love
- 20:05one another. He said that. Everyone will know
- 20:10that you are Jesus' disciples if you love one
- 20:13another. Not if you preach well or serve well.
- 20:17Not if you know scripture well. But you must
- 20:22love well. Community is the evidence of discipleship.
- 20:29It is the visible expression of invisible work.
- 20:35God is doing, it's the invisible work God is
- 20:39doing in your heart. You carry purpose every
- 20:45time you walk into a room. You carry purpose
- 20:48every time you show up for someone else. Every
- 20:53time you listen, you carry purpose. When you
- 20:59pray, encourage your support. Your purpose is
- 21:03not just about what you do. Your purpose is about
- 21:07who you are to the people around you. You are
- 21:13a carrier of God's presence, of God's peace,
- 21:17and of God's compassion. Those together with
- 21:22God's strength, you bring Christ into every community
- 21:27you step in. Serving is not a task. It is not
- 21:33a posture or event. Serving is a lifestyle. Serving
- 21:38is something you do to feel useful. Excuse me.
- 21:44Serving is not something you do to feel useful.
- 21:47But sometimes you feel, what if I serve, I feel
- 21:53useful. But the reality is, That's for you. That's
- 22:00not really for someone else. You say it's for
- 22:03someone else, but it's really for you. Serving
- 22:09is something you do because Christ lives in you.
- 22:15That's what the true serving is about. Jesus
- 22:20said, I did not come to be served, but to serve.
- 22:28When you serve, you look like Jesus. You sound
- 22:32like Jesus. You love like Jesus. Serving is purpose
- 22:36in motion. Community grows through consistency,
- 22:42not through big moments, not through emotional
- 22:44highs or an occasional connection, but through
- 22:48steady presence, steady love, steady commitment.
- 22:53Consistency builds trust. Consistency builds
- 22:56unity. Consistency builds belonging. You do not
- 23:00have to be perfect. You don't have to be everything
- 23:07to everybody. But what you have to be is present.
- 23:15Every community needs peacemakers. Not peacekeepers,
- 23:20peacemakers. People who avoid conflict, but peacemakers.
- 23:28Unlike peacekeepers, are people who bring healing
- 23:32into conflict. People who listen, forgive, reconcile,
- 23:37and restore. Jesus said, blessed our peacemakers,
- 23:42for they will be called children of God. When
- 23:50you bring peace, you reveal your Father. The
- 23:56world is watching how believers treat each other.
- 23:58The world is watching how we love, forgive, serve,
- 24:01and unite. Community is one of the greatest witnesses
- 24:07to the power of the gospel. When people see a
- 24:12community of believers who love deeply, who serve
- 24:15faithfully, and who walk together, they see Jesus.
- 24:21Your community is your destiny. Take a moment
- 24:30and breathe deeply. Ask yourself, who is God
- 24:36calling me to be in my community? A listener?
- 24:41A servant? An encourager? A prayer warrior? A
- 24:50bridge builder? A peacemaker? A mentor? A friend?
- 25:00Now ask the Holy Spirit, Lord, shape me into
- 25:05the person my community needs. Let that prayer
- 25:08settle into your heart. Because God is preparing
- 25:13you for deeper purpose through deeper connection.
- 25:20Let us pray. Father, thank you for the gift of
- 25:24community. Thank you for calling us to walk together.
- 25:28to grow together to serve together shape us into
- 25:33people who will love well people who forgive
- 25:39quickly people who encourage deeply people who
- 25:44bring peace people who reflect christ in every
- 25:50relationship make our communities places of healing
- 25:55unity and purpose and places of your presence.
- 26:02We want your presence. In Jesus' name, amen.
- 26:14This concludes week nine of our 12 -week journey,
- 26:18Living with Purpose, A God -Centered Life. You
- 26:22have taken a powerful step this week, a step
- 26:24toward connection. A step toward belonging. A
- 26:29step toward a deeper purpose. And the purpose
- 26:34is a step toward being more connected to the
- 26:40people around you. Remember, community is not
- 26:44easy and it's not perfect. But community is holy.
- 26:49And you were created to be part of it. We will
- 26:55be continuing week 10 next week. I hope that
- 27:00you'll be joining us for that. But thank you
- 27:03for joining us today on Voices of Life, a ministry
- 27:06of the Church for Life. I'm Pastor David. Next
- 27:10week, we'll be continuing with living with purpose
- 27:12in your work and service. Until then, be kind,
- 27:21be clear, and be a good... contributor for your
- 27:26community. We'll see you then.
