Transcript
- 0:03Welcome back to another episode of Domer Sons.
- 0:07I'm your co-host Calvin Rose alongside with prestigious swimmer Matthew Rose and half my son, Matthew Rose's son- William Rose.
- 0:20It's Wednesday, October 28th.
- 0:23Today we're gonna be previewing Navy and giving out some mid-season awards.
- 0:28We just saw another kinda crazy week of college football happen and, We have a ranked one now.
- 0:35Yeah.
- 0:36We do.
- 0:36Wisconsin, and that could turn out to be a quality win, but you know we just wanna assume that for right now it's a ranked win- Yeah nothing else.
- 0:44We need Wisconsin to continue to do well.
- 0:46What made you happier, watching Cody Campbell's- Mm Texas Tech Raiders losing to Cincinnati or USC losing to Wisconsin?
- 0:57USC.
- 0:58I'm so ready for Lincoln Riley to get fired.
- 1:01I, I saw this thing on ESPN that said, like, Lincoln Riley's- Loves USC and U- like he, USC is the right place for him and he's the right place for USC either way They li- he's, he likes USC'cause they let him get away with anything.
- 1:19He's been terrible He has not been good.
- 1:22He's had good rosters that should be able to make the playoffs and he just hasn't been able to because he's not a good head coach Closes the door Yeah, I think he's got one more loss in him and then if he's- He's outta there at three and they're outta the playoffs, he's probably getting fired Yeah, and we'll see He's, he f- they play Indiana and Ohio State They're gonna lose one of those- They're gonna lose a g- one of those games And UCLA Yeah, I think- Oh, mighty UCLA.
- 1:48The Bruins.
- 1:49They're undefeated, so- Yeah, they are undefeated Most fraudulent undefeated I don't know about that Same thing with, same thing with Utah That people said- Same thing with Utah People said the same thing about Indiana two years ago That's true And then when they got in the playoff, what happened?
- 2:03Ah.
- 2:06Um- We did a little who's your daddy Yeah.
- 2:09But, yeah, I mean, we'll see what happens with USC against Ohio State.
- 2:13Ohio State doesn't have their starting quarterback, but this is not an Ohio State podcast or a USC podcast.
- 2:18It's a Notre Dame football podcast It is a Notre Dame football podcast So let's get into the off-season or mid-season- Mid-season awards mid-season awards And technically it's more than mid-season because we're seven games in, so- Seven uh- Tomato, tomato Yeah.
- 2:32When we play the Navy game, uh, two-thirds of our season will be, uh, have, have come and gone.
- 2:39So seven games in, let's go through mid-season awards offense.
- 2:44Calvin, who you got?
- 2:46MVP of the seven-game stretch here.
- 2:51I like two people, C.J.
- 2:55Carr and Jonaz Walton.
- 2:57Oh.
- 2:59Yeah, Jonaz Walton is clearly running back one, I think.
- 3:02Ah, no, no, no, no.
- 3:05He's not running back one.
- 3:07Who is?
- 3:08Nolan James Jr., my GOAT.
- 3:10The toughest man on this roster.
- 3:11He's great.
- 3:12He's better than Jonaz.
- 3:12I think he's good.
- 3:13I don't think he...
- 3:14I think he's good.
- 3:15I don't think he's great.
- 3:16I think Jonaz is better than Nolan James.
- 3:18I disagree.
- 3:19I think Jonaz g- had 13 carries.
- 3:21A- granted it was against Stanford, and N- Nolan James Jr.
- 3:26had the same amount and he did less and- Uh, I...
- 3:29So basically, you're basing the performance off of a game at Stanford?
- 3:33My favorite thing about Nolan James Jr.
- 3:35that Jonaz Walton doesn't do as well is Nolan James Jr.
- 3:39falls forward every single time.
- 3:42Okay.
- 3:43So that's your favorite thing.
- 3:44So what's your favorite thing about Jonaz Walton that Nolan James Jr.- His breakaway speed- Don't- that Nolan James Jr.- Nolan James Jr.- doesn't have yes, he does.
- 3:51Yes, he does.
- 3:52William.
- 3:52He's a quick guy.
- 3:53Yes, he does.
- 3:54William.
- 3:54And Nolan James Jr.
- 3:55can catch the ball.
- 3:56He's like a slot wide receiver.
- 3:57He's a- Yeah, that's, that's fair.
- 3:58I thought you were gonna say that.
- 4:00And he's built, and he's built like a meerkat.
- 4:01His torso is like- Are you k- four-fifths of his body you wanna talk about built like something?
- 4:05Jonaz Walton has a linebacker's body.
- 4:07He's built like a candy corn.
- 4:09What?
- 4:10Jonaz Walton- He's built like a one-by-one Lego piece.
- 4:14He's, he, he- Jonaz- he's a grown- He's built, he's- He's a grown man-child he's built like a Spindrift.
- 4:19He, he, he's 18 years old and he's, he's a grown man-child.
- 4:23He's got, he's got a linebacker's body.
- 4:26Yeah.
- 4:26He is.
- 4:26So does Nolan James Jr.
- 4:27No, he doesn't.
- 4:29Okay.
- 4:29All right.
- 4:29Maybe a short linebacker.
- 4:30William, offensive.
- 4:32C.J.
- 4:33Carr, no question.
- 4:34Come on now.
- 4:35I like it, I like it, but- Yeah.
- 4:36And mine's C.J.
- 4:37Carr as well.
- 4:38Um- Okay, good.
- 4:39You didn't do the,"I'm gonna zig away from you guys" thing.
- 4:43I'm gonna say something original here.
- 4:47All right.
- 4:48William, defensive MVP.
- 4:51Who do you got?
- 4:52I was between Leonard Moore and Bubacar Traore.
- 4:56I would love to give it to my GOAT Lenny, but I'm gonna give it to Bubacar.
- 4:59That's fair.
- 5:00That's fair.
- 5:01I have Luke Talich.
- 5:03I think Bronte went down and he just immediately stepped up into this role and I think he's performed very, very well, and I think he's performed better than Shuler.
- 5:13I think, granted, Shuler is injured.
- 5:16I don't think...
- 5:18We haven't seen a really good Shuler since I think probably Rice, if I'm gonna be honest I think that's about right, since Rice Yeah.
- 5:28I think that, it was, he- so he was not himself for most of the North Carolina game and- This entire BYU game he was not himself Not himself.
- 5:38Um- Yeah, it's something like Christian Gray had Yeah.
- 5:42He's just, he's not hitting nearly with the same amount of velocity Yeah, and I, I- So- I think it was the same thing with, uh Never mind.
- 5:51Him and Tate Johnson match each other perfectly, but I think if we see a fully healthy Adon Shuler and then Luke Talich as well, I think that's also a good combination.
- 5:59But- It is a good combination, and it'll be interesting if Bronte is able to come back and Shuler's still nursing whatever injury this is, what the coaching staff does.
- 6:10Yeah Because as of right now, Cal, I'm with you.
- 6:13My defensive MVP is Talich, and that's primarily because he's been the most consistent.
- 6:19He's been consistently good every single game.
- 6:23And that's not to take anything away from Bubacar Traore.
- 6:28From these other guys.
- 6:28Yeah Bubacar Traore just happened to play only five plays against BYU because he made a silly mistake.
- 6:35And not only a silly mistake, a mistake that really hurt his football team.
- 6:40And he's owned up to that, and I don't hold it against him per se, but we're talking about the, the most- Impactful valuable Yeah, most impactful, most valuable player in the first seven games of the season, and I think for me it's Talich.
- 6:55Yeah.
- 6:56And I agree with you.
- 6:58Um- Okay.
- 6:58Uh, next one, pleasant surprise.
- 7:02Pleasant surprise I'm gonna go with, uh, I guess I could say Luke Talich here, if that's one.
- 7:10But I'm gonna go with Jayden Sanders.
- 7:14Hmm.
- 7:14Okay.
- 7:15I think that's, that's a good one.
- 7:17We saw it against Wisconsin when he had those two breakups and I think he's, he's a good player.
- 7:24All right?
- 7:26All right.
- 7:26Uh, William, pleasant surprise.
- 7:31Who you got?
- 7:36My pleasant surprise is At the beginning of the season I thought this player was hot ass.
- 7:46Now he looks a little less hot ass.
- 7:49He looks- He changed his number.
- 7:53You know, he might be back to his old ways A Christian Gray.
- 7:57Yeah, Christian Gray is my pleasant surprise.
- 8:00I also wanna give a little shout-out to DJ McKinney.
- 8:02DJ McKinney has also performed very, very well.
- 8:04He has.
- 8:05He has.
- 8:05I agree.
- 8:06W- who is, who's your pleasant surprise?
- 8:11My pleasant surprise is Jonaz Walton.
- 8:13Yeah.
- 8:14He's a freshman.
- 8:15I didn't realize he was gonna be as good as he was,'cause quite frankly, guys, we've been hearing about Aeneas and how good of a camp he had in the fall leading into the season.
- 8:26I didn't know how many touches Jonaz would get, and credit to the coaching staff, at least through the Stanford game of getting some, him some touches and some visibility there.
- 8:38Um, unfortunately, we didn't get more than 10 snaps for the young man in Provo.
- 8:45But- But hopefully everybody's learned from that and I understand, you wanna play the more experienced guys per se, but, when there's a level of talent that you have, you kinda gotta just play it.
- 8:56Yeah.
- 8:56I th- I think it's, it's one of those things with, um- We- It, it's competitive football.
- 9:03We had- The best person needs to be on the field- Yeah just period.
- 9:06We had this- It doesn't matter how old they are, how much experience they have.
- 9:09Best players need to be on the field, and obviously we're not privy to what goes on in practice, but if the person's being consistent in practice and has earned the trust of both his teammates and the coaching staff, then they should be playing.
- 9:25Yeah.
- 9:25We had the same amount of QB draws as we had Nolan James rush attempts against BYU.
- 9:31Yeah, not good.
- 9:32That's pretty bad.
- 9:34Not good at all.
- 9:35Um- Okay.
- 9:37Uh, and one more.
- 9:40Do you have a wild card?
- 9:41My wild card?
- 9:45I guess you could also say this for a pleasant surprise, Mikey Gilbert.
- 9:51Yeah.
- 9:52That's- That's fair I just, you know, I knew he was decent.
- 9:57Like he had that one touchdown against Miami last season and then we just barely saw anything of, thing of him after that.
- 10:06But I mean, he's been playing good.
- 10:09I mean since Michigan State and, uh, Purdue though he's, you know, gone a little cold which you can expect but know I'd like to see him be back to that early-season self where he's getting open and getting a lot of yards and being a dominant boundary receiver.
- 10:28Well, he'll probably have some opportunities this week.
- 10:30William, do you have a wild card?
- 10:35I think my wild card is Scaife Yeah?
- 10:38Yeah.
- 10:39Jasper?
- 10:40Jasper.
- 10:40Azie?
- 10:42Yeah, I'm gonna go with Spencer Porath.
- 10:45That's good.
- 10:45That's what- He's wa- he's missed only one field goal.
- 10:48I meant Porath, sorry.
- 10:49He missed f- Por- Yeah Porath, yeah.
- 10:50Okay.
- 10:51Good.
- 10:51I mean, we got the, we got those two.
- 10:53All right.
- 10:54Yeah.
- 10:54Well, uh, you know, six and one- All out after the first seven games.
- 10:59What do you...
- 10:59You got something to say?
- 11:00I wanna do grades for our coordinators for a tickle.
- 11:05Oh, I don't like- Yes we don't need to do that.
- 11:07Yeah, we do.
- 11:08This is important.
- 11:09I'm not gonna- Grade, grades I'm not gonna go on the record with some negativity here.
- 11:12I don't wanna do it either.
- 11:14I- I'll do it.
- 11:15Sure, go for it.
- 11:17I'm gonna do it.
- 11:19Oh, I'm gonna give Dembrock like a B-plus.
- 11:23I think this is the first game that he's just di- played, did ba- bad play calling and just played it too conservative.
- 11:30So I think it's a B-plus.
- 11:31I don't think he gets an A yet.
- 11:33And then Chris Ash, I'm gonna give like a B-minus.
- 11:38I just, not very...
- 11:40Or B-minus, C-plus.
- 11:42Um, I'm, I've not been impressed, like, by North Carolina.
- 11:49You know we have the best defense in the country before BYU, right?
- 11:51I understand that, but- Who have we played offensively?
- 11:55Some real weapons, you know.
- 11:58The mighty Boilermakers.
- 12:00Yeah.
- 12:00I don't, like- I, yeah, I- What happened against North Carolina shouldn't have happened, and that's what also does- Dude, it's, it's one game.
- 12:09It's one game, but like- Georgia let 27 against Wa- Western Kentucky, like things are gonna happen.
- 12:1527 against Western Kentucky?
- 12:17Yeah.
- 12:17Okay.
- 12:18Well, we don't know how many of those...
- 12:19Do you know how many of that happened against their second and third stringers?
- 12:23Well, I just- Yeah.
- 12:24Well, that's meaningful.
- 12:27Indiana scored six points against Michigan.
- 12:30They're number four in the AP poll now.
- 12:32Yeah, well, I think- Indiana's like- We, we shouldn't- I think we've gone over this.
- 12:36Indiana's not that good.
- 12:37Well, we shouldn't be looking at polls right now.
- 12:40Polls don't matter.
- 12:42All right Navy preview.
- 12:46We got...
- 12:48Guys, I don't think you understand.
- 12:49Haley, Haley Scott DeMaria is an amazing person.
- 12:56She's got an amazing background.
- 12:58And not only that, she's lived in Annapolis, Maryland for 22 years now, and has got a really rich history with the Naval Academy because her family always hosted a couple of plebes, midshipmen, for, um their first year at the Naval Academy.
- 13:21So Navy, Haley's gonna walk us through what to expect from Navy.
- 13:26So let's get Navy...
- 13:28Whoa.
- 13:29So let's get Haley on the, on the phone here.
- 13:33Joining the pod this week, we've got Notre Dame royalty.
- 13:38And when I say this, I mean this sincerely.
- 13:40Haley Scott DeMaria.
- 13:42When we swam together at school, she was Haley Scott.
- 13:45She married also one of our teammates, Jamie DeMaria.
- 13:50Not to out Jamie here.
- 13:52I think he's poolside right now, not here with us.
- 13:55But Haley, thanks for joining us today.
- 13:58Really, really appreciate you making the time knowing you've got a crazy busy schedule here, including a trip to Rome to go cheer on the Irish in the Holy City to start off the basketball season.
- 14:10Yeah, absolutely.
- 14:11I am thrilled to be here.
- 14:12Navy-Notre Dame is one of my favorite topics.
- 14:15Oh, it's the best.
- 14:16I get kind of provincial about this game, Haley, when people say,"Oh, why do you play the Naval Academy?
- 14:22Blah, blah, blah," you know?
- 14:23Uh,'cause people could get after Notre Dame for their cupcake schedule and, and always kind of slandered the Navy rivalry, and they have no clue as to the history and what this game really means to our school in particular.
- 14:38Well, and, and to both schools really.
- 14:40But yes, Navy-Notre Dame, this is our 99th meeting.
- 14:44The first matchup was in 1927.
- 14:48Uh, and except for COVID, we've played every year.
- 14:50So 2020 is the only year that Navy and Notre Dame did not play.
- 14:54So for the longest time, it was the longest intersectional rivalry.
- 14:58And so had we played in 2020, this would've been the 100th anniversary, but we'll save that for next year, when we're back in South Bend, which is great.
- 15:05But the history of Navy-Notre Dame and why we always play is rooted in World War II when so many young men were being drafted and, of course, Notre Dame was men only at the time, and a large number of our student body was drafted to, to serve in World War II, and would've had to shut down because they didn't have the student body population to keep the school open.
- 15:29And at that time, there was the athletic director and, he also coached football at Navy, was a guy by the name of Rip Miller.
- 15:38And so Rip Miller, sent midshipmen, sent members of the Navy to Notre Dame's campus and operated the second-largest training facility for midshipmen for the Navy on Notre Dame's campus, which allowed Notre Dame to stay open.
- 15:54So another little fun fact about Rip Miller, while he coached and was athletic director for a long time at Navy, he actually played football for Notre Dame in the 1920s.
- 16:04Really?
- 16:05And...
- 16:06Yes.
- 16:06Did he play, did he play for Knute?
- 16:07So yes, and he was one of the, this is, this I had not heard of.
- 16:11He was one of the seven mules who blocked- for the four horsemen.
- 16:16That's great.
- 16:16So Rip Miller has his own kind of legendary status at Notre Dame, had a great career playing for the Fighting Irish, and then had a great career coaching and serving as athletic director at Navy.
- 16:27He is the one that bridged the gap between the two institutions, sending midshipmen to Notre Dame's campus to keep our school open, and that is what cemented this very friendly, highly respectful rivaly, rivalry that we have that has lasted to today.
- 16:47That's phenomenal background, and I did not know that about Rip Miller.
- 16:52Makes me even more proud that we continue this tradition and hope it never goes away.
- 16:58Fantastic.
- 17:00No, it certainly won't go away.
- 17:01In fact, the name of the, quote,"rivalry trophy," was established in 2011.
- 17:07It's called the Rip Miller Trophy, and it's unique in the sense that it's not a rivalry trophy that gets passed back and forth, to the team that wins.
- 17:14It is two separate halves.
- 17:16So Navy has a half that they keep during the year.
- 17:20Notre Dame has a half that we keep during the year.
- 17:22It has the names of our captains on it for that year.
- 17:25And then both sides of the trophy are brought together during the playing of the game to show that separate but that unity on the field.
- 17:33So really kind of a neat, different, rivalry trophy too.
- 17:37That's awesome.
- 17:38I had, again, didn't know that as well.
- 17:41And I don't know if I just haven't been paying attention to pregame or something like that where that's been explained, but really cool background.
- 17:48That's, that's really cool.
- 17:49And then tell me, Haley, so you've lived in Annapolis, Maryland, the home of the Naval Academy, since- Mm-hmm 2004.
- 17:582004.
- 17:59Yeah, and for 20 of the 22 years, you basically adopted a plebe or a midshipman- Every year?
- 18:10Yes And what, what did that entail?
- 18:12Yeah, so when we knew we were moving to Annapolis, we signed up to be a sponsor family.
- 18:16And a sponsor family is each plebe, which is a freshman, their first year at the academy they're called plebes.
- 18:22Each plebe is assigned a sponsor family when they arrive on campus, and you are technically officially their sponsor for their plebe year.
- 18:31We signed up for two, we signed up for two every year, and you know, some you connect with really well and some, you know, you just are a, a sponsor family to them.
- 18:41And the ones that you connect with, they keep coming back.
- 18:44So while you're technically just their sponsor for their first year there, many of them continue to come back their second, third, and fourth year.
- 18:52So most Saturdays, you know, midshipmens, specifically plebes, are only allowed off the yard, that's their name for campus.
- 18:59They're only allowed off the yard from noon until midnight on Saturdays, and so it's not a lot of time.
- 19:05If there's a home football game, they have to be on campus.
- 19:07If they have duty or watch, they have to be on campus.
- 19:09So it's really not even every Saturday.
- 19:12But their lives are so structured and scheduled during the week that that break with the sponsor family on the weekend is a chance for them to sleep, take off their uniform, wear more comfortable clothes, eat really, you know, and, have a break from a, a pretty intense time and schedule during the week.
- 19:33I bet.
- 19:33That's awesome.
- 19:35And how cool it is to have exposure, especially for, you've got two sons.
- 19:39They're- Yeah they're grown, they're out of the house, they're launched, thriving young men.
- 19:45But to have that, exposure in your house, you know, I, yeah.
- 19:48It, it was awesome.
- 19:50I, I mean, talk about great role models for my boys, and they, you know, both of my boys, their confirmation sponsors were midshipmen- Wow that we sponsored.
- 19:59We've been to a number of their weddings.
- 20:01Um, many of them have kids now.
- 20:02Some of them are in their mid-30s.
- 20:04It, it, it's a unique relationship.
- 20:06Um, but it's, it's, it, it's one of the neatest things I think we did having lived in Annapolis, was being a sponsor family.
- 20:13That's super cool.
- 20:15That's really, really neat.
- 20:16And I can't imagine, like, what your grocery bills were on the weekends- when your boys were teenagers- Oh, yeah and the guys were in the house.
- 20:23Two boys and mids, right, and their friends.
- 20:25And you know, once you get the reputation of being kind of a, quote,"good sponsor house," it's not just your- official midshipmen that come over.
- 20:32Uh, but we loved it.
- 20:33I, we really did.
- 20:34I, people, I talk about my mids all the time.
- 20:36They're, they're not quite like my kids, e- they're,'cause they're older, but I'm, I'd like to think I'm not old enough to be the mom of a mm, 35-year-old.
- 20:45But- uh, they're, they're like my younger brothers and, really part of our family.
- 20:49That's awesome.
- 20:50Well, thank you for doing that.
- 20:51That's super, super cool.
- 20:53Super cool.
- 20:54All right, Haley, Navy.
- 20:57You, you know a little bit of, you know a little bit about the Academy and their football team, huh?
- 21:00I do.
- 21:01I do.
- 21:02So I'm gonna start off with the Lou Holtz quote that I think of all the time,"Never underestimate Navy." And he said that the entire time he coached at Notre Dame.
- 21:11And so we can't underestimate Navy They, they are going to fight hard for 60 minutes.
- 21:19They are very disciplined.
- 21:21For those of us who were at, Yankee Stadium a couple years ago with their, they either had five or six turnovers, that is highly unlikely for an academy.
- 21:30Mm-hmm.
- 21:30Um, Navy plays very disciplined.
- 21:31They play very hard, and they are going to put every effort in no matter what the score until the clock has less than one second on it., And they have some, and they have some solid players.
- 21:44You know, they're, they're having a, a, a pretty solid season.
- 21:47We've played them in the past couple years where they've been undefeated coming into our game.
- 21:52That's not the case this year, but they have a tricky quarterback.
- 21:57He is, he's sneaky good.
- 21:58Mm-hmm.
- 21:59His name is Jackson Gutierrez.
- 22:01He leads the team in passing and rushing yards.
- 22:03This kid can run.
- 22:05He's quick, he's tricky, and if he has any hole, he's gonna take it and, and go.
- 22:12So that's, that's kind of the first player to watch is Navy's quarterback, Gutierrez.
- 22:17The other person, and, you know, the, the leading receiver is a guy by the name of Jordan Collins.
- 22:22He's their tight end.
- 22:23He's their top receiver.
- 22:25He's probably not a match for our secondary, but we can't leave him open.
- 22:29Okay.
- 22:30And I feel like in some of our games we play kind of a loose zone, and sometimes the opposing team has, you know, has some open receivers.
- 22:39If we leave this guy open, he's gonna catch the ball.
- 22:43So, I feel like our defense again in our secondary is pretty good and we'll be able to handle him.
- 22:48But, just somebody to keep an eye on.
- 22:50The funnest player for me is a guy by the name of Giuseppe Sensi.
- 22:55Giuseppe Sensi.
- 22:56Giuseppe Sensi, exactly.
- 22:58He's their safety.
- 22:59And I remember, so last year we were at the Navy Notre Dame game in South Bend.
- 23:04It was fre- it, it was exactly the weather I'm hoping for the Miami game this year.
- 23:08It was like 29 in icy slushy rain.
- 23:12Oh, yeah.
- 23:12Um, just k- about as bad as it can get in terms of South Bend weather.
- 23:15It was a night game.
- 23:17Notre Dame won 49 to 10.
- 23:19Um, it was a, we, we handled the mids pretty well.
- 23:22Um, but the name I kept hearing was this Giuseppe Sensi, Sensi, Sensi, you know?
- 23:27His name was all over the place.
- 23:28And he's got an interesting background.
- 23:31He is a huge Notre Dame fan.
- 23:33He grew up a huge Notre Dame fan.
- 23:35His grandfather played football for Notre Dame, so this is a big game for him.
- 23:41And I remember last year coming home, going back to Annapolis and, people talking about this kid'cause he had such a great game.
- 23:49And even though the score again was 49 to 10, his name was, his name was read often.
- 23:55Check it out you heard his name often in the s- in the stadium.
- 23:58So he's gonna have a good game.
- 23:59He's gonna be up for this.
- 24:00He was not recruited by Notre Dame.
- 24:02But he still loves it.
- 24:03And again, there's such a respect between the institutions.
- 24:05But he's, we need to watch him from a safety perspective,'cause my guess is he's gonna have a, a pretty great game.
- 24:12He leads Navy in interceptions.
- 24:14Hopefully that won't be the case against us.
- 24:17But, um but he's good, and he's gonna be fired up.
- 24:20That's great.
- 24:21Yeah, it's hard to forget that name.
- 24:23That's, uh- Yeah that's definitely- It's a really fun name.
- 24:25Yeah.
- 24:25That's fantastic.
- 24:27That's fantastic.
- 24:27Yeah, I saw that the Navy quarterback actually had over 130 yards passing against North Texas.
- 24:32And as w- you know, we've kind of grown up with Navy, they usually don't- Mm-hmm pass the ball that much.
- 24:37But- Right I know they have a new offensive coordinator or a new coach who's come in and changed the offense a bit.
- 24:43So, um, you talking about soft zone and tight ends, um, I thought I was recovered from the BYU game, but I guess I'm not- because I'm sitting here sweating as you- as you talk about that.
- 24:55Um, yeah.
- 24:56You, you know, one thing I will say, though, is, um, in prior, under prior coaches, I did not feel like we were well prepared for Navy- Mm-hmm especially, you know, they still run the option.
- 25:09And I, I do feel like under Freeman, we've h- we've been ready for it.
- 25:15I, I feel like we've handled the option and Navy, w- we're stronger positioned against them the last couple of years, and have been.
- 25:22But again, it's Navy, and they're gonna come and they're gonna fight hard, and they don't care that we're bigger, stronger, faster, and better.
- 25:28They're gonna compete, they're gonna compete hard.
- 25:30But I do feel like even the couple of the option plays that we've seen in recent weeks played against us, I felt like we navigated it pretty well.
- 25:38So it's a different- It's a different offense and we need to be ready for it.
- 25:42Yeah.
- 25:43And I think it's kind of nice to be playing a mobile quarterback again right before we're dealing with Miami.
- 25:49So I think this will be...
- 25:50At least there's, you know, you don't have to throw out the defensive playbook to play these guys and not have it be anything that's applicable to games- Exactly that we'll face, you know, further down the line.
- 26:00So- Yeah that's good.
- 26:02I think our biggest, and I, this is where I, I have wholehearted trust in Marcus Freeman, you know, as my son texted me right after the BYU game, no team plays better than a Freeman-led team after a loss when they're in a must-win situation.
- 26:17So, this is, this is, this is his jam.
- 26:20Yeah.
- 26:20And coming off a bye week, they hopefully have had time to rest, hopefully a time to put BYU behind us.
- 26:26Hopefully are not overlooking Navy.
- 26:28I don't think we are.
- 26:30I don't think Coach is gonna let them do that.
- 26:33Um, I think we're gonna be ready to play them, but they're gonna play hard.
- 26:36Yeah.
- 26:36I agree.
- 26:37I agree.
- 26:37You know, as I told the boys the day after, I was like,"Well, we're in the playoffs now," and- Yep you know, I love playoff Marcus.
- 26:44He- Exactly you know, he's pretty good.
- 26:47E- exactly.
- 26:48Those are fun teams to watch.
- 26:49No doubt.
- 26:50No doubt.
- 26:51Um, anything else about Navy that, uh, you know, is, that we should be aware of?
- 26:57So, you know, j- just when I think about keys to the game and what we need to do to win, do I think we're gonna win?
- 27:02Of course.
- 27:03Um, we need to play disciplined.
- 27:05We can't make silly mistakes.
- 27:07Navy's gonna be very disciplined.
- 27:08That's just, that's how they are.
- 27:09That's how they live 24-7, seven days a week.
- 27:13Um, that's their whole life.
- 27:15We need to make sure we are always ahead of the turnover battle.
- 27:19Um, we can't play sloppy.
- 27:20We can't turn the ball over.
- 27:22We need to contain their quarterback.
- 27:24Um, I think he's gonna be the key.
- 27:25Our, I, I feel like we've got a strong defensive line that, um, should be able to take on their offensive line, but we need to make sure that we contain him'cause he is tricky and he is fast.
- 27:35And then really we just need to play our game.
- 27:38We need to not try to be anything more or less than who we are.
- 27:43And if we play our game, um, we're gonna win, we're gonna win pretty easily.
- 27:47But I love the respect between the universities.
- 27:51Most people know, um, you know, they play the Navy alma mater at the end of every game before they play the Notre Dame alma mater, and our team goes over to the, the Navy section and stands with them, and then they return, um, the respect.
- 28:05It's, it's such a respectful game.
- 28:07It's really hard for me to say,"Beat Navy." I am a huge Navy fan.
- 28:12We, I grew up, you know, we gr- raised our kids going with season tickets to Navy football games.
- 28:17Um, I will of course be cheering for Notre Dame on Saturday, but, um, it really is my favorite game of the year to watch.
- 28:24I love that.
- 28:25I love that.
- 28:25And, you know, um, I'm sure if you were in town you'd make the trek over to, to Boston, um, to go see it.
- 28:33And, uh, I wish, I wish we would...
- 28:36I, you know, Haley, outside of I believe it was my sophomore year where we swam Navy- Mm-hmm I don't think I've ever Been on that campus and, um, I certainly haven't seen a football game there, but I've seen pictures of that stadium, and it looks phenomenal.
- 28:56I wish we- It's- would play them- awesome on campus.
- 28:58So, ah, so Matt, that is like my dream goal.
- 29:02I have always wanted a Notre Dame Navy game at Navy Marine Corps Stadium.
- 29:07I, I just, I love that stadium.
- 29:10It's so cool.
- 29:11It's never gonna happen.
- 29:12We, when, when it's a home game for Navy, they always play in a professional stadium.
- 29:17It's a great revenue generating game for the Naval Academy, so I understand that.
- 29:22I will say in 2020, when, the, before they, they canceled the mat- before they canceled the match up, before they canceled the Navy Notre Dame game, they announced that the game would be played at Navy Stadium.
- 29:33And I didn't care how I was gonna get a ticket.
- 29:36I don't even know if they were gonna let students or anybody in the game, but I was gonna figure out a way to be there because it ha- it has always been my dream to watch Notre Dame play at Navy Marine Corps Stadium.
- 29:48It's just a really neat venue and a great place to watch a football game.
- 29:53Yeah.
- 29:53I don't, I don't know if it's gonna happen.
- 29:55Probably not, but, um, I can still dream.
- 29:57I don't need an- I don't want another pandemic to, you know, for the chance to do it, but I was excited for about a month when we thought we might get them to play there.
- 30:04Well, if there's anybody in my sphere that can make that happen- Haley, you can do it.
- 30:11I'm rooting for you.
- 30:13Well, thank you.
- 30:14Me too.
- 30:14Rooting for the teams.
- 30:15They would love it.
- 30:16I love it too.
- 30:17It's super, super cool.
- 30:19Um, well, I hate to do this, but do you have a score prediction?
- 30:24I do.
- 30:25I do.
- 30:26Well, let us hear it.
- 30:26Let's hear it.
- 30:26A- and I went back...
- 30:27Yep, so right, I have, I ended up with, and I went back and forth.
- 30:31I ended up with 45-14.
- 30:33Okay.
- 30:33Um, I, you know, I, I started lower, and then I thought,"Nah, I, I'm gonna go higher." I can't go much higher than that.
- 30:39Notre Dame, Navy is not traditionally a high-scoring game.
- 30:44Navy's gonna grind the ball as a traditional running team, which they're not, you know, they're, they're more passing now.
- 30:50They're not running it all the time.
- 30:52Really grinds the clock out.
- 30:53I think- Yeah there have been some games where we've only had four or five possessions the entire game.
- 30:58But I think we'll handle them pretty well.
- 31:00I don't think it'll take us long to score on them, so I think maybe our offensive possessions will not be, you know, eight to 10 minutes.
- 31:08Yeah.
- 31:09The 14 points, they don't have much of a kicking game, so I, I thought about giving them a touchdown and a field goal at 10 points, but they can score.
- 31:17And if we get, you know, far enough ahead and we start playing some of our backups, which would be great, they might get two touchdowns off of us.
- 31:24That might be generous, but that's where my thought is, 45-14 Notre Dame.
- 31:29Yeah.
- 31:29I think you're, you are absolutely right.
- 31:32If we can get up on them pretty quickly and g- get our subs in, yeah, I, I d- I think that it's just, it's challenging for subs who probably are running the Navy offense or running the Navy defense to come back- Right on the field and now actually have to play against that when- Right all they've been seeing is Notre Dame ones and twos for the week- Yeah leading into it.
- 31:54That's a great point.
- 31:55I mean, again, y- yeah, we're, we're bigger, we're stronger, we're better.
- 31:59That doesn't always mean we'll win.
- 32:01I, w- I think we'll win this weekend.
- 32:02The goal for really the goal for Navy is to come out of it with a win and no injuries.
- 32:07And healthy.
- 32:07That's, yes, exactly.
- 32:09Yeah.
- 32:09Yeah.
- 32:10We get those two things, that's a massive win for us.
- 32:12No doubt.
- 32:12I'm knocking on wood over here.
- 32:14Yeah.
- 32:14Yeah, I will too that's exactly it.
- 32:17That's exactly it.
- 32:18Well, awesome.
- 32:19Um, I love it.
- 32:21Haley, thanks so much for, for joining us.
- 32:24Uh- Of course and I'm gonna see you in a couple weeks for this Miami- Back Yes.
- 32:31Yep, but let's...
- 32:32We are n- we, we're not talking about that in our house.
- 32:34We gotta focus on we're focusing on Navy.
- 32:36But yes, I will be in South Bend for those games.
- 32:38We actually have a swimming legacy reunion weekend, so a lot of swimmers.
- 32:42I think I heard they've got 120 registered to come, so that'll be fun.
- 32:46Um, but yeah- Absolutely be great to see everybody on campus after we beat Navy.
- 32:50Absolutely.
- 32:51Well, thanks so much for joining us.
- 32:52And I hope that you text me some pictures from Rome.
- 32:56Super excited for you guys, and that's gonna be an amazing opportunity.
- 33:01I- is- Thank you are you gonna be able to see Leo?
- 33:04What, what's going on?
- 33:05I have, I, I haven't- Right now- his health we're scheduled.
- 33:08His health is, he's in great shape.
- 33:09He- Okay he doesn't need further treatment.
- 33:11He is on the mend.
- 33:13And right now we are scheduled for an audience, with Pope Leo on Saturday morning.
- 33:17So fingers crossed.
- 33:19Yeah, super psyched about that.
- 33:21Have you ever met a pope before?
- 33:23No.
- 33:24Oh, man.
- 33:25Super cool.
- 33:26Yeah, it is kind of a once in a lifetime opportunity.
- 33:30And Trip, I'm looking forward to see the basketball teams too.
- 33:32No doubt.
- 33:32So it'll be fun all around.
- 33:34Yeah.
- 33:34But bummed to miss the Navy Notre Dame game.
- 33:36Well, it'll be exciting.
- 33:37And, Absolutely we'll see you shortly, Haley.
- 33:40Please give my regards to, to Jamie, and the boys, too.
- 33:44Um, and- Absolutely we'll see you in a couple weeks.
- 33:48Yeah.
- 33:48Thanks for having me.
- 33:49Go Irish.
- 33:49Go Irish.
- 33:51Awesome stuff from Haley Scott DeMaria.
- 33:55Really, thankful that she could join us here before she heads off to some more adventures, and look forward to seeing her at the Miami game.
- 34:03All right.
- 34:04Crew, Navy, Saturday Game predictions Game predictions We got a noon game.
- 34:11When's the last time we had a noon game, Rice?
- 34:13No Yeah Mm, yeah, maybe Rice No, North Carolina Was it North Carolina maybe?
- 34:19Oh, it was a noon game Yeah My soccer schedule has not been favorable towards our- Yeah game schedules Yep All right- I think Purdue was also a noon game Let's do some- No, it wasn't No, it was 3:30 No, it wasn't All right, Navy predictions.
- 34:33Who wants to go first?
- 34:35I'll go Yeah 45-7 45-7?
- 34:39Yeah All right.
- 34:40Cool.
- 34:41I'm gonna be a little different here I'm gonna do a 48-7 That's exactly what he does every time And I'm gonna go 49-14 So you just lowballed me without, with hiding the numbers No, not at all Yes, yes I just think, I think- Yes I think we're gonna be handily in front, and we're gonna have third and fourth stringers in who will not have been playing against the scout team,'cause they will have been the scout team for the Navy triple option.
- 35:20Um, and- You think Marcus is gonna pump the brakes after we just lost to BYU?
- 35:25No No, I don't think he's gonna pump the brakes until it's time to pump the brakes So anyways.
- 35:32Yeah.
- 35:33Let's get out of this game healthy, guys.
- 35:35Please.
- 35:36Let's get out, uh, get out of the game with, number one, a win, and number two, healthy.
- 35:39All right, guys.
- 35:40Uh, we talked about over the break shifting off of the starting 11, and we had an idea that we were gonna do, and I think this is appropriate given that Uncle Tony, who's hosting a ton of people for the Navy game this weekend- And it's Navy Yeah, and it's Navy, and the shirt concept he has mimics this movie, and we just watched this as a family within the last 10 days.
- 36:14So here's what we're gonna do.
- 36:15The movie is A Few Good Men.
- 36:17Mm-hmm.
- 36:18We're gonna cast the main characters with current Notre Dame football players or coaches.
- 36:27Okay?
- 36:27All right.
- 36:28Do you want me to go first?
- 36:31Or do you want to go first?
- 36:32Who wants to go first?
- 36:33I'll go first.
- 36:33Who, who are we gonna do?
- 36:34I'll go first.
- 36:35I'll go first.
- 36:35We're gonna do Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, and Jack Nicholson.
- 36:38All right.
- 36:38Those are, those are the three- I think we should do Kevin Bacon in the round right here.
- 36:43Do Kevin Bacon as well.
- 36:43Yeah, g- do- Kevin Bacon?
- 36:44Yes, Kevin Bacon.
- 36:44Jack Ross?
- 36:44No, don't do Kevin Bacon.
- 36:46All right, so we're gonna go for the three actors who are billed on the poster here.
- 36:53That's Tom Cruise as Lieutenant Kaffee; Jack Nicholson, who is Colonel Nathan R.
- 37:01Jessup; and Demi Moore, who's Lieutenant Commander Joanne Galloway.
- 37:06Okay?
- 37:08For Tom Cruise's character, Lieutenant Kaffee- Ooh, wait.
- 37:14Yeah So describe the character first for the audience, I suppose So Tom Cruise's character is someone who has got a lot of confidence he's a bit of a goof-off I don't know if he's a goof-off.
- 37:30He's an incredibly bright person who has really focused on getting settlements and is kind of biding his time in the JAG, all right?
- 37:49And he's not looking to get inside a courtroom, right?
- 37:56Yeah Demi Moore, on the other hand, for this particular case- She wants to.
- 38:00She wants to get all up in it she wants to get in that courtroom and defend- her clients, okay?
- 38:08So for Tom Cruise, I'm gonna go with Luke Talich Okay Okay?
- 38:14Why?
- 38:15'Cause Talich, a little bit underrated- Okay didn't know much about him, but when he has been put in a position to thrive, he steps up and he thrives.
- 38:34How, how is he underrated?
- 38:36If anything, he's properly rated,'cause everyone's saying he's the best.
- 38:40That's why he got signed.
- 38:41That, now he is No He was a walk-on No.
- 38:44We're saying that- Okay Tom, Tom Cruise in the movie is not underrated He's not.
- 38:48And also, think about this, Tom Cruise's- dad was also, like, the lawyer thing, so you gotta think about that aspect too That's fine.
- 38:55I'm still going- I think- with Talich I think- Hold on.
- 38:58I, I, hold on.
- 38:59I'm gonna go through all six- gonna go through all of them.
- 39:01Never mind.
- 39:02Jack Nicholson, I'm gonna go with Chris Ash He's the villain.
- 39:06He's the- Exactly he's the villain goes,"I, I'm saying like- You already know it you can't handle the truth.
- 39:11I'm ass." I'm gonna go with Chris Ash Why complicate it so much?
- 39:17I don't know"I demand the truth.""You can't handle the truth." All right.
- 39:22A little of that I'm terrible.
- 39:24All right.
- 39:24Chris Ash for Jack, Jack Nicholson's character.
- 39:27And Demi Moore, um-"I ordered the zone." I ordered the code red.
- 39:36I ordered the zone.
- 39:38Okay.
- 39:39Demi Moore's character, uh, I, the, I, the, this is gonna sound maybe insulting, but I'm gonna go Christian Grey No.
- 39:50Yes.
- 39:51No.
- 39:52Christian Grey.
- 39:53No.
- 39:54No.
- 39:54I got steps up there at the end.
- 39:56All right?
- 39:57No.
- 39:57That's my thing.
- 39:57No.
- 39:58You will...
- 39:59All right.
- 39:59You wanna go next?
- 40:00Yeah, I'll go next.
- 40:01Okay.
- 40:02Okay, Tom Cruise.
- 40:03Tom Cruise, CJ Carr.
- 40:06That's what I was gonna say as well.
- 40:07He's got some parental or grand parental figures who are, uh, big p- Papa big people.
- 40:13He's trying to, you know, live up to expectations.
- 40:16He doesn't do...
- 40:17He's a little shaky under pressure, right?
- 40:19He hasn't really won big games so far.
- 40:22So far.
- 40:23And then for Demi Moore, I'm gonna go with You might wanna do like Bubacar?
- 40:35No.
- 40:37Or you could do Christian Gay, actually.
- 40:39Christian Gay is a good one.
- 40:40Uh.
- 40:40S- thank you.
- 40:41No, Christian Gay is not good.
- 40:42Why?
- 40:43Do we need a, do we need a pivot here?
- 40:45Penn State.
- 40:45No, no, no, hold on.
- 40:46Let me think.
- 40:47Penn State.
- 40:47Do you wanna go to Jack Nicholson?
- 40:52Christian Grey Okay, I'm gonna go, um, Ma- for Demi Moore, um, doing Galvin movie, I'm gonna go with Micah Gilbert Hmm.
- 41:02Yeah.
- 41:02That's good.
- 41:02That's not bad.
- 41:03Yeah, not bad at all, right?
- 41:04Yeah.
- 41:04You know, sh- beginning of the movie, Demi Moore, Micah Gilbert, was m- really important and throughout the movie he's kinda like p- like, it's, it's slow down a little bit.
- 41:15He's drowning.
- 41:15Yeah.
- 41:15He's kind of become a background character, but you know, he's still there and he's kind of annoying.
- 41:21I think he gets away with some stuff he shouldn't get away with Okay.
- 41:27Okay, what do I- I like that faster interference against BYU, and Jack Nicholson is Chris Ash.
- 41:31There's no hiding it.
- 41:34Yeah, all right.
- 41:34All right, who you got?
- 41:36Tom Cruise.
- 41:37I'm gonna go with C.J.
- 41:38Carr, I think.
- 41:41Yeah.
- 41:41Jack Nicholson, uh, Chris Hussein Ash.
- 41:54Avatar Fire Chris Angel.
- 42:00And, uh, Denny Moore I'm gonna go with Anthony Knapp, actually Really?
- 42:09Yeah How?
