- 0:00In the ordinary life in society, food plays an especially
- 0:05important and high profile role. We treat food as a centerpiece
- 0:10of our various celebrations, as rewards, as comfort when we are
- 0:16under stress, and as something we consume out of boredom or
- 0:21inattention. Food taste, food preparation,
- 0:25food choices all become major topics of consideration and
- 0:30discussion. For those who live in a
- 0:33circumstance with modest or low food availability, there is
- 0:37obviously a focus on acquiring enough food for the basic needs
- 0:41of the body. This is tempered by other life
- 0:45needs and a recognition of the scarcity in the 1st place.
- 0:49Despite the need, food cannot occupy a central place in the
- 0:53lives of people who simply do not have access to sufficient
- 0:57food, although it still occupies an important place.
- 1:01As availability becomes possible for those who are in a position
- 1:07to reside in a society with an abundance of food and wide
- 1:10availability, we see the role and focus on food actually
- 1:15increasing. There may be some habit or
- 1:18instinct carried over from a past filled with scarcity that
- 1:23overcompensates beyond current actual need.
- 1:27There is, however, a lot of social interaction that
- 1:30accentuates the desire for food, for special tastes or types of
- 1:35foods, and which uses food as a reward, as a solace, and as
- 1:40compensation for other needs. Health professionals and
- 1:45researchers bombard us constantly with information on
- 1:48various nutrients we need and the risks attended on not
- 1:53acquiring those nutrients, which further increases our anxiety
- 1:57about getting enough and the right type of foods and our
- 2:02fixation on food. So much for the ordinary life
- 2:07and society. All of this focus on the
- 2:10physical body and its needs or demands tends to create a sense
- 2:14of dullness in the consciousness, accentuating the
- 2:18action of the guna of tamas. For the spiritual seeker, this
- 2:23focus on food becomes a major distraction if it is not
- 2:26addressed by definition. The spiritual aspirant needs to
- 2:31to direct his focus on the sadhna, on the aspiration, on
- 2:36the receptivity, on the surrender to the higher
- 2:40transformative forces and on the rejection of various
- 2:44distractions that come through the background that all human
- 2:48beings bring to the process, which includes all of this
- 2:52enormous focus on food and its availability, its taste, its
- 2:57preparation and its role in our lives.
- 3:03The spiritual seeker, as he shifts his focus away from the
- 3:07physical body and the vital nature and begins to adopt the
- 3:11standpoint of the psychic being which uses the human instrument
- 3:15but is not bound by it, can begin to have an entirely
- 3:19different relationship to food. If we look at our use of an
- 3:24automobile, we treat it as a tool or instrument for achieving
- 3:28certain objectives. We need to ensure it gets the
- 3:31fuel it requires when it requires it, but we do not
- 3:35generally think about feeding it fuel until the tank is close to
- 3:39empty. Similarly, the various nutrients
- 3:43in the form of other fluids such as steering fluid, brake fluid,
- 3:47transmission fluid, windshield cleaning fluid are only
- 3:52addressed occasionally during times of maintenance.
- 3:55Generally, if we begin to look at the physical body along
- 4:00similar lines, we can find a more balanced approach in our
- 4:04relationship to food, and thus we can reduce the time and
- 4:09attention and importance we give to it at present.
- 4:13This opens up more time, focus and attention for the spiritual
- 4:18pursuits, Sriorovindo notes. Quote Do not trouble your mind
- 4:25about food. Take it in the right quantity,
- 4:28neither too much nor too little, without greed or repulsion as
- 4:34the means given you by the Mother for the maintenance of
- 4:36the body in the right spirit, offering it to the Divine in
- 4:41you, then it need not create Thomas.
