Dot com Welcome to the Daily Quote, a podcast designed to
• 0:06
kick start your day in a positive way.
• 0:09
I'm your host, Anna McGivern for October 4th.
• 0:12
Today is World Animal Day, a global observance dedicated to
• 0:16
animal rights and welfare. The day was chosen to honor
• 0:19
Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron St. of Animals in
• 0:22
ecology, whose feast day falls on October 4th.
• 0:26
St. Francis, who lived in the 12th
• 0:28
and 13th centuries, was known for his deep love and respect
• 0:32
for all creatures, believing that animals were his brothers
• 0:36
and sisters in God's creation. World Animal Day was first
• 0:40
organized in 1925 by Sinologist Henrik Zimmerman in Berlin,
• 0:46
Germany, though it wasn't moved to October 4th until 1929.
• 0:51
In 1931, the International Animal Protection Congress in
• 0:54
Florence officially adopted October 4th as World Animal Day
• 0:59
since then, it has grown into a worldwide movement celebrated in
• 1:03
more than 100 countries. Mission of world animal day is
• 1:07
simple but profound to raise the status of animals in order to
• 1:11
improve welfare standards around the globe.
• 1:15
It's a day to recognize that animals are sentient beings
• 1:18
deserving our compassion, respect and protection.
• 1:22
Today's quote comes from naturalist Henry Beston, who
• 1:26
once said we need another and a wiser and perhaps a more
• 1:32
mystical concept of animals. They are not brethren.
• 1:37
They are not underlings. They are other nations caught
• 1:42
with ourselves in the net of life and time.
• 1:46
Weston's profound observation captures something essential
• 1:49
about what World Animal Day and Saint Francis of Assisi both
• 1:53
  understood. Animals aren't simply resources
• 1:57
for our use, nor are they just cute companions.
• 2:01
They are complete beings, living their own lives with their own
• 2:05
purposes, caught alongside us in this extraordinary web of
• 2:10
existence. Think about what Destin means by
• 2:13
calling them other nations. Each species has its own
• 2:18
culture, its own way of communicating, its own complex
• 2:21
  social structures and survival strategies.
• 2:25
When we watch a clock of birds moving in perfect
• 2:27
synchronization, or observe dolphins cooperating to hunt, or
• 2:33
see elephants mourning their dead, we're witnessing other
• 2:37
forms of intelligence, other ways of being in the world.
• 2:43
Saint Francis understood this centuries ago, when he preached
• 2:46
to birds and called animals his brothers and sisters.
• 2:49
  It wasn't anthropomorphizing. Done.
• 2:51
We're being sentimental. He was recognizing their
• 2:55
inherent worth, their place in creation, independent of their
• 2:59
usefulness to humans. World Animal Day asks us to
• 3:03
expand our perspectives beyond seeing animals as either threats
• 3:06
to avoid or resources to exploit.
• 3:09
When we recognize them as Best in describes other nations
• 3:14
sharing this planet with us, our relationship with them naturally
• 3:18
shifts toward respect, wonder, and responsibility.
• 3:22
So today, think about Besting's vision of animals as other
• 3:26
nations sharing the net of life with us.
• 3:30
How might this shift in perspective change how we
• 3:32
interact with the animal world? Maybe it's watching a bird or
• 3:36
squirrel today, not as a decoration in your environment,
• 3:39
but as a complete being with its own agenda and intelligence.
• 3:44
Maybe it's considering how your choices, what you eat and what
• 3:48
you buy, how you vote, affect these other nations we share the
• 3:53
planet with. Maybe it's simply pausing to
• 3:56
really see and appreciate the animals you encounter,
• 3:59
recognizing them as fellow travellers in this extraordinary
• 4:03
journey of life. World Animal Day reminds us that
• 4:07
we're not alone on this planet, and that the other beings we
• 4:12
share it with deserve our respect, wonder and care.
• 4:16
That's going to do it for today. I'm Anna McGivern, signing off
• 4:19
for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
• 4:25
Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
