- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk Tabernacle talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:08We hope that this podcast will help you to know Christ, grow in
- 0:11his word, and show his love to others.
- 0:14Let's dive right in. Welcome back to Tabernacle talk.
- 0:16Today we are in James chapter 4, James chapter 4.
- 0:22And seems like just a few days ago that we began walking
- 0:27through this book together and written by the pastor of the
- 0:31church at Jerusalem, the half brother of Jesus, the son of
- 0:36Mary and Joseph. And today we're going to be
- 0:39looking at verses one through 10.
- 0:40He he's writing to some people that he dearly loves that were
- 0:43once a part of his congregation there in Jerusalem.
- 0:45Now they're scattered all across the Roman Empire as a result of
- 0:48persecution, and yet they are not unified right now.
- 0:55In fact, there's there's some trouble even within these people
- 0:58that they gave up where they lived and and their homeland in
- 1:04response to their obedience to Jesus.
- 1:07And yet it didn't mean that for all the rest of their life they
- 1:10were perfectly holy people. They still had to deal with
- 1:13times of temptation and struggle.
- 1:16And that's what we're going to read about today.
- 1:18James four and verse #1 what is the source of wars and fights
- 1:24among you? There's fighting within this
- 1:27church. Where's it coming from?
- 1:29He says. Don't they come from your
- 1:31passions that wage war within you, that you guys want some
- 1:37things? This would be the word should be
- 1:39the word epithumi or something like this.
- 1:43Yes, a a state or condition of experiencing pleasure for any
- 1:47reason. There are things that you all
- 1:49want and that it's sparking a war within you within your heart
- 1:56of OK, I know this might not be like totally right or I might
- 2:00not be going about this in the right way, but I really feel
- 2:03passionate about this. And James says This is why you
- 2:06guys are fighting, because you want things and it's causing
- 2:10spats, it's causing arguments, it's causing, if you will,
- 2:14warfare between you within your church verse #2 you desire and
- 2:19do not have. You murder and covet and cannot
- 2:24obtain. You fight and wage war.
- 2:28I'm going to look at these three sentences real quick.
- 2:30He says, first you desire and do not have.
- 2:33He says it doesn't matter how much you want whatever this is,
- 2:37it's not making you get everything that you want and so
- 2:42you should not keep pursuing this fighting.
- 2:45He says are you getting what you want from it?
- 2:47No, He says you murder and covet and cannot obtain.
- 2:52I, I do not believe we are supposed to understand this
- 2:55murder as like literal physical murder happening within the
- 2:59churches. This is what Jesus would say in
- 3:02Matthew 5 in the Sermon on the Mount, that if you hate your
- 3:06brother in your heart or you call him an idiot, it is like
- 3:10you have murdered him because you have murdered him in your
- 3:13heart. You have said, I don't care
- 3:16whether he is here or gone. I, I don't want him around.
- 3:20I don't want this person who is standing in the way of me
- 3:23getting what I want. All of us can do that.
- 3:27That is an easy place to get you not to actually want to murder
- 3:31someone, to be like, man, I just wish this person was gone so
- 3:34that way I could do whatever I want.
- 3:36That is, that is a normal human thing to think.
- 3:40That is not a godly thing to think.
- 3:42And here James says you're murdering people in your hearts
- 3:46and you are coveting, You are wanting what others possess and
- 3:50you're not getting it. And then he says you fight and
- 3:54wage war, that you are not settled even just with, if you
- 4:01will, sinning within your heart and hating and coveting within
- 4:04yourself. You are then taking it out to
- 4:09other people. You are waging these battles in
- 4:12other people's minds that you want to persuade to your side.
- 4:16You are, you are going, you are saying words against this other
- 4:23person and you are fighting them in order to try and get your
- 4:29way. We're going to continue on here
- 4:32with what James says. Obviously, this is not how we do
- 4:37things within the Church of God. And yet this from the very
- 4:43beginning of the church, this perhaps first portion of
- 4:46Scripture written, this was present then and it shouldn't
- 4:50surprise us when it is present today.
- 4:53He says you do not have because you do not ask.
- 4:59OK, well I've asked. He says you ask and don't
- 5:03receive because you ask with wrong motives so that you may
- 5:07spend it on your pleasures. He says here this, OK, you don't
- 5:16have the things that you want that you're passionate about
- 5:20because you have not asked God for them.
- 5:23And you go, OK, well I have asked God.
- 5:25And then he says, OK, you ask and you don't get it because you
- 5:29are asking with wrong motives so that you can do what makes you
- 5:36feel good so that you can feel important.
- 5:39And God says, no, I am not about that.
- 5:42That is going to be bad for you spiritually.
- 5:45This is going to make you more prideful.
- 5:47This is going to make you less reliant on Christ.
- 5:49This is going to make you less loving towards other people.
- 5:52And as a result, I am not not giving you what you ask for.
- 5:55This is a comfort to me when I pray for things and God does not
- 6:01answer it in the way that I wanted it answered.
- 6:06Because it is not God saying no, I don't love you enough to give
- 6:12you this. He's saying, I love you too much
- 6:16to give you this because you don't understand the
- 6:19implications of what this would mean in your life.
- 6:22You don't know who you would become if I gave you the answer
- 6:27to this prayer request. I'm just going to speak for me.
- 6:31I love that. That is a comfort to my soul
- 6:34that I'm like, OK, well, then I can just, I can just pray and
- 6:38pray because if it is good and God wants it for all my life, I
- 6:43know that if I ask anything according to his will, he hears
- 6:46me. And we know that if he hears me,
- 6:48then I have the request that I've asked of him.
- 6:51Wonderful. That's, you know, first John,
- 6:52four and five, great, that's awesome.
- 6:55Or if I pray something and God goes, no, that's not going to be
- 7:00good for you, then I can know when God says no, that there is
- 7:04something better for my spiritual life and for those
- 7:09around me. There's something better for me
- 7:12that God wants than what I'm praying for.
- 7:14Do you have that confidence that when you pray, you know if this
- 7:18is God's will, I'm going to get it?
- 7:20If it is not God's will, then he's going to give me something
- 7:24better than what I'm asking for. Now, I'm not saying if you're
- 7:28praying for a minivan that God's like, sweet, I'm going to give
- 7:31you a Lamborghini. That's not what I'm talking
- 7:33about. I, I am saying whatever God does
- 7:37give you is going to be better for your soul than whatever
- 7:40you're asking for. Verse #4 James, again, there's
- 7:46all the fighting, the craziness. People aren't praying for stuff.
- 7:50They're just like trying to battle it out in church for what
- 7:53they want. And some people are asking God
- 7:57for these things, but they're doing it so that they can, you
- 7:59know, be important so that they can enjoy stuff.
- 8:03And it has nothing like it's not benefiting their soul at all.
- 8:07And James says you adulterous people.
- 8:11OK, They this took a turn. He says, you adulterers.
- 8:16I I believe if I remember correctly, the old King James
- 8:19has this. You adulterers and adulteresses,
- 8:21like just naming it. You guys are being unfaithful,
- 8:26OK, within marriages. No, no, no, you're being
- 8:29unfaithful to God, he says. You adulteress people, don't you
- 8:33know that? Friendship with the world, with
- 8:37the world systems, the world ways of doing thing with the
- 8:40world's wisdom and what it pursues.
- 8:44Idolatry and sexual immorality and covetousness and greed and
- 8:50position and and possessions, that kind of stuff that the
- 8:54world is after. When you buddy up with that and
- 8:58when you are seeking that, especially within the local
- 9:00church, he says friendship with the world is hostility towards
- 9:05God. You have become an enemy of God
- 9:08when you have chosen to pursue stuff or position or pleasures
- 9:14rather than your God, he says. So whoever wants to be the
- 9:18friend of the world becomes the enemy of God because God is
- 9:22against idolatry, God is against immorality, God is against
- 9:25greed, God is against covetousness.
- 9:29And so when you pursue that, you step into the line of
- 9:33condemnation and anger and wrath of God.
- 9:37Don't do that. Instead, pursue Jesus.
- 9:40There is no condemnation in that path.
- 9:41But when you have chosen to, as here, particularly within the
- 9:48local church setting, when you choose to try and Duke it out
- 9:52for stuff or for money or for position, you are absolutely in
- 9:57the wrong. And God is, you have become an
- 10:01enemy of God in that moment. That is not what I want to be.
- 10:04I want to be a, you know, I want to be a friend of God as the
- 10:09old, I forget if it's Lakewood worship or Gateway worship or
- 10:12Phillips Craig and Dean or someone has that old song.
- 10:14I am a friend of God. He calls me friend.
- 10:16I want to be that. I don't want to be singing.
- 10:18I am an enemy of God. He calls me his enemy.
- 10:22I want to be a friend of God. Verse #5 Or do you think it's
- 10:25without reason that the Scripture says the Spirit He
- 10:28made to dwell in US envies intensely?
- 10:32There's a lot of different ways that people have taken verse 5
- 10:35over the years. My personal understanding of it,
- 10:38at least at the level for a Tabernacle talk, is this.
- 10:41God has a love for his people that He describes most often,
- 10:46both in the Old Testament and the New Testament as a marital
- 10:50relationship. The church is the bride of
- 10:52Christ, and when the church loves things other than God,
- 10:59other than Jesus, other than the Word, and it pursues other
- 11:04things, it wants to pursue fame, it wants to pursue fortune, it
- 11:08wants to pursue pleasure. Instead of pursuing Jesus, it is
- 11:12committing spiritual adultery. And the Holy Spirit inside of us
- 11:18is a, in a good way, a jealous husband that is jealous for the
- 11:23exclusive love of his wife. It is, if you will.
- 11:29It is the wife that does not want her husband looking
- 11:32elsewhere for love or elsewhere for intimacy, but that it would
- 11:35only be found within that marital relationship.
- 11:38And the same thing is true spiritually with us and our God,
- 11:43that God wants us to love and to pursue and to worship Him.
- 11:46Not this world. Verse #6 What's our response to
- 11:51this? What?
- 11:52What do we do when we have been pursuing this world and its
- 11:57treasures and possessions in ways?
- 11:59What do we do? He says he gives greater grace.
- 12:04He gives more grace. Therefore he says God resists
- 12:08the proud but gives grace to the humble.
- 12:11Think we went over this verse in Proverbs.
- 12:14I can't remember at what point, but I don't want God to resist
- 12:18me. I want him to give me grace.
- 12:20I want him to empower me for the work that he has called me to
- 12:23do. So what do I do?
- 12:25I become humble. I'm not proud.
- 12:28I'm not looking for what am I passionate about and what do I
- 12:32want to force. Instead, I'm going to choose.
- 12:35I'm going to be humble. I'm going to have that kind of
- 12:37wisdom that we learned about last episode that just goes, I
- 12:41just want what's right in the eyes of God and I don't really
- 12:44care how I shake out as that's being pursued.
- 12:48Verse #7 Therefore, submit to God.
- 12:51Make his mission your mission. He says resist the devil and he
- 12:56will flee from you. Then we say, no, I'm not going
- 13:01to. I'm not going to talk trash
- 13:04about that other person. No, I am not going to attempt to
- 13:09wage warfare to get, you know, my way or my thing within the
- 13:14church. Instead, I'm just going to
- 13:16choose to love. I'm going to be like God,
- 13:17whatever you want. That's what I want.
- 13:20And if you want the same thing that I want in this church, then
- 13:24as I just peaceably, lovingly, gently and treatingly as I go,
- 13:30hey, what about this? Here are some benefits of this.
- 13:33Here's what the Word says. And so I think this should take
- 13:35place as we do that we can see God's will be accomplished and
- 13:41we can see the devil be thwarted as he's trying to destroy the
- 13:45church, that we resist him through not letting him guide us
- 13:51into actions that we want to do but that are against the will of
- 13:55God. We submit to God.
- 13:57We say your mission is my mission, not my mission is your
- 13:59mission. We say God is your church, not
- 14:02mine. So I just want to do what you
- 14:04have in your church, devil. You're not going to get me to
- 14:07fight against my fellow soldiers in the Gospel army.
- 14:12You're not going to have me stabbing him in the back or in
- 14:14the side or in the front. We're on the same team.
- 14:17You're on the opposite team. And so I'm not going to listen
- 14:20to you and I'm not going to do what you want me to.
- 14:23Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
- 14:25What a joy and a comfort for Jesus.
- 14:28This meant three different times within the wilderness
- 14:31temptations, 3 times that we know about that we have written
- 14:35in Scripture that Satan tempted him.
- 14:37And each time Jesus responded with the Word of God and he
- 14:41resisted Satan and then Satan left him alone after that.
- 14:45And what a joy that we have this promise from God that when we
- 14:48resist the devil, He will flee from us.
- 14:51It might not be right away, but He will flee if we resist.
- 14:55Verse #8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.
- 15:00What a wonderful promise. The closer you want to get to
- 15:04God, the closer God will be to you.
- 15:07You You don't have to earn back your standing with God or like
- 15:12go whatever amount of days without sinning in order to be
- 15:15close to Him. But when you draw near to him,
- 15:17when you read the Word, when you are praying, when you are asking
- 15:21the Holy Spirit to to work in and on and through you, He will
- 15:26answer and God will be right there with you.
- 15:29What's our response to that, to God drawing near to us?
- 15:32Well, verse #7 verse #8 continues, cleanse your hands,
- 15:36sinners, and purify your hearts. You double minded that we would
- 15:42say I'm going to get rid of the sin because I have no desire for
- 15:46it. If I'm going to be close to God,
- 15:47I want nothing to do with sin. I'm not going to pursue my way
- 15:52and God's way. I'm just going to pursue God's
- 15:53way. Verse #9 Be miserable and mourn
- 15:57and weep. Let your laughter be turned to
- 16:00mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the
- 16:04Lord and He will exalt you. Our response to our sin ought to
- 16:10be sorrow that we would be broken over our sin.
- 16:14We would be broken over how it sours our relationship, our
- 16:19relationships with other people. We ought to be broken over the
- 16:23fact that we have rejected God's way in favor of our own.
- 16:27And as we do that, as we choose that I'm not going to take joy
- 16:32in sin. Instead, I'm going to be broken
- 16:35over it. I'm going to reject it.
- 16:36I'm going to have a hatred in it that I want no part of the the
- 16:41sin that wants to spring up in me.
- 16:43I hate it and I do not want it. And as we humble ourselves
- 16:46before the Lord and we recognize who we are and what our
- 16:49shortcomings are and we say, God, I need you love the old
- 16:53hymn. I need the every hour, most
- 16:55gracious Lord, no tender voice like thine can peace afford.
- 17:00I need the oh, I need the every hour.
- 17:03I need thee. Bless me now, my Savior, I come
- 17:07to thee. As we pursue that humility
- 17:11before the Lord, there we find his exaltation.
- 17:18I'm going to also do verses 11:00 and 12:00 because it's
- 17:21connected. I was going to do this in
- 17:23another episode, but I'm just going to tag it onto this one.
- 17:26So then the ending of this, our fighting with each other, our
- 17:32response, humility, confession, grace, weeping before the Lord.
- 17:38Then verse 11 and 12 is back to how we interact with each other.
- 17:42Don't criticize one another, brothers and sisters.
- 17:45Anyone who defames or judges A fellow believer defames and
- 17:50judges the law. If you judge the law, you are
- 17:53not a doer of the law, but a judge.
- 17:56There was one law giver and judge who is able to save and to
- 18:01destroy, but who are you to judge your neighbor?
- 18:06When it comes to the local church, there is what's called
- 18:10encouragement, exhortation, where you challenge your
- 18:14brother, sister to live in accordance with the gospel.
- 18:19However, criticizing and judging is a whole different thing here.
- 18:24This word criticize this would be to speak I'll of, to speak
- 18:28degradingly of, to defame or to slander someone else.
- 18:34That when you are talking about other people, is it really clear
- 18:38from the way you're talking that you do not love this other
- 18:41person that you are talking about?
- 18:44That while you might say, Oh yeah, I love them, but they are
- 18:49this, this, this and this, because that is not godly.
- 18:52That is not a a way to live. And the other way that this is
- 18:58phrased, that James says don't criticize one another.
- 19:00Don't speak evil of defame. Don't slander each other because
- 19:04anyone who defames this is actually that that same word or
- 19:09judges. This is to make a pronouncement
- 19:13of judgment on to condemn someone to give a a final
- 19:19statement about who they are. It's a this person will always
- 19:24be or they can't do anything but this, that kind of statement has
- 19:30no place within a local church. Why is this?
- 19:34Because they don't answer to you.
- 19:36They answer to God. And this is what James says.
- 19:39They they have a judge and a lawgiver who will hold them
- 19:43accountable, ultimately accountable.
- 19:45They're not ultimately accountable to you.
- 19:48So if there is a behavior that maybe someone is involved in, it
- 19:52is not slander to go to that person to encourage them to walk
- 19:58in accordance with their belief in Jesus and in the word of God
- 20:01that they claim to have. Be like, hey, I love you.
- 20:05I've been seeing you do this thing in this scenario.
- 20:09In this scenario, I'm a little concerned for you.
- 20:13This isn't the way that Jesus wants us to live and and I would
- 20:17love to to help you to grow in this area.
- 20:19That is a good thing that's coming alongside someone else
- 20:23and helping them walk with Jesus.
- 20:25But you just telling your friend, Oh yeah, did you see
- 20:28what that person did? They are such this or that that
- 20:33is pronouncing a a final judgement or a condemnation of
- 20:37they cannot and will not change. And so I'm going to hold some
- 20:41bitterness against them, but I'm also not going to be the person
- 20:44that helps them to grow to be better.
- 20:47Let us not be those that criticize the fame, tear down
- 20:51and judge others. Let's be those that come
- 20:54alongside and help and grow. And when we do that in a spirit
- 20:58that is fixed on loving God, pursuing God, loving our fellow
- 21:03Christians that is built on grace and humility.
- 21:06That is how a church goes forward.
- 21:10It is not found in bitterness and backbiting and people
- 21:15jockeying for position and whatever their pet thing is.
- 21:19Let us choose humility before our God and love for each other.
- 21:25Thanks for tuning in today and I hope that this would be an
- 21:28encouragement to you, a challenge to you.
- 21:29I know it is for my heart. And let us love one another as
- 21:33He has loved us.
