- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: You'll listen into it that bug ball cast.
- 0:03[SPEAKER_00]: So sit back, shut that pleasure given out the use, smoke them if you got them, and enjoy.
- 0:21[SPEAKER_00]: Aaron Patterson was an outsider from the very start.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_00]: If we were to show her a kindness, we'd call her a fantasist.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_00]: If we were to drop our courtesy, we'd call her a liar.
- 0:41[SPEAKER_00]: Aaron Patterson lived in a large white house at the end of a long third robe, and the old skirts of Leon Gather, Victoria, Australia.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_00]: She was from an upper middle class Melbourne family, while educated and prosperous.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_00]: A father worked in the government and made a tidy payback at her mother, studied 19th century literature at university.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_00]: Aaron.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_00]: Well, she won't do it too bad for herself either.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_00]: She was prosperous through family inheritance, as one may say.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_00]: She'd land relatives hundreds of thousands of dollars, and yet she didn't seem to care too much for that swanky life that she left behind.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_00]: She'd once told a friend that it was like being brought up in a Russian orphanage, where they don't touch the babies.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_00]: Regrets, I guess she had a few.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_00]: After the collapse of her marriage to Simon Patterson, also 50, who was the father of a two children, the woman whose physical features had more of that in common of a gastropard, was now a woman who pulled a lonely life under the bruised skies of Australia's far south.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_00]: An area where religion runs as deep as the abandoned coal mines that had once brought great wealth to the area.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_00]: With Leigh and Gotha's population of 5,900 individuals, it seems almost inconceivable that not one person really knew Aaron and Paterson.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_00]: But by the accounts, the isolation had suited up, especially Michigan older, and the acting would not a single soldier in the pandemic, or in the two years that followed, local said she'd raise sheep and goats at her home, but they were long gone.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_00]: She would go for regular walks in the woods, where she would forage.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_00]: Once telling a friend, the older she got, the more isolated she wanted to become from mankind.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_00]: And as the town she lived and fell into decline, and the mines closed, and poverty, and joblessness took hold.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_00]: This is what happened.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_00]: In these modern times, we are inundated with news and supposed facts and stories where it's hard to discern what is real and what's not where we're left wondering what happened and in this series I tried to figure out just that.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: and present the facts, void of emotion.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_00]: Unattempt to put together a timeline and understand what happened.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_00]: I am your host, dead bug, and my primary goal is to bring you the facts, heading through that plushy layer of media bullshit, to bring you the truth.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_00]: Ian Wilkinson was the pastor of an over 130-year-old wooden Baptist church at the top of the hill, overlooking the city, that I guess you could say brought hope.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_00]: to city that suffered so much from the shuddering mines and the shrinking forestry in dairy farming.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_00]: The 71 year old was known to befriend those wretched souls, the homeless, the poor, the cripples.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_00]: I added their last part to be evocative, there was a man who cared.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_00]: I guess you could say that he wore his sincerity on his face.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_00]: Like Aaron Patterson wore the mustard stains on her dress.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_00]: Monashained, and never tempting to hide it.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_00]: And his wife, Heather, was much of the same.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_00]: The sincerity, not the mustard stains.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_00]: It was in the summer of 2020 that Patterson added herself to his flock.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_00]: She arrived at the church on a Sunday, must it stains and all, have the first meeting his wife, Heather, who would just happen to be the aunt of her estranged husband.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_00]: As the Wilkinson would go on to say, we won't close, we will more acquaintances, but I guess as close to anyone was to being friends with their empartisan.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: But Aaron Patterson seemed determined not to lose the few people in her life that showed any interest a cared for.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_00]: So much so that she'd recently created an illness, telling the past and his wife that she had cancer.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_00]: Simon Patterson and his wife Aaron had had a tumultuous relationship to say the least between the couple's marriage in 2007 and the eventual separation in 2015, whether a number of periods of separation and reconciliation.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_00]: One incident of note was when she got up and left the husband
- 6:26[SPEAKER_00]: When the baby's only from a food was breastfeeding, Simon Patterson had to drive from Townsville to Perth, a distance of over 5,000 kilometers, 3100 miles through desolate territory, alone with his child.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_00]: Remembering his son's screams, still dependent on his mother's breast milk and refusing anything else.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_00]: And when he'd returned to their home and confronted his wife, that she was sitting in peace in front of the television, she seemed indifferent to her son's pain.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_00]: On the replying pain needed to be waned off the tit anyway.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_00]: It seemed she was evolving into a heartless, humonguous and not the woman that he had fallen in love with.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_00]: Simon Patterson said his wife had held a university to agree in business and accounting.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_00]: He was a qualified air traffic controller, haven't worked at Melbourne's busy airport.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_00]: He said that it was her intelligence that attracted him to him.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_00]: Wow, I entirely want him.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_00]: Missed certainly want to look, but in 2015, he'd got sick of the fighting, and he'd left.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_00]: He believed that his wife loved his parents, Don and Gale Patterson, especially his dad.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_00]: They shared a love of knowledge and learning in the world.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_00]: When Simon had left the marital home in 2015, the two still regularly stayed in contact through texting, flirting, talking politics, they both share the same sense of humor.
- 8:01[SPEAKER_00]: But it was in 2022 when he filed an income tax form and listed himself as separated.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_00]: Herons out of two changed instantly, and the chatty side of their relationship at Endon, with communications only being about the teenage kids and money.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_00]: At the start of their marriage, his wife had inherited over a million dollars from a grandmother, and although not paid out in one lump sum and being dripped back to the couple,
- 8:31[SPEAKER_00]: was still, he wanted out.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_00]: And that's why he was surprised when his estranged wife had invited him as parents, and the pastor of their church and his wife, over for a lunch.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_00]: At first the grain, but then telling his estranged wife that it made him feel uncomfortable to which he texted back, that's really disappointing.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_00]: And it's important that you are all there because things need to be said.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_00]: Some impetus and thought friends that there was truly no such thing as a free meal and reading his wife's text over and over again that made him feel uncomfortable.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_00]: On July 29, 2023, three couples would be together at Aaron Patterson's House for lunch.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_00]: The Wilkinsons, Aaron and Aristotle's husband Simon, and his parents, Don and Gale Patterson, Franz believed that the lunch had been arranged in an attempt to unify the family that had been fractured after the couple had separated.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_00]: Aaron had always been a keen chef and like to source fresh ingredients often growing or picking them a self from the wild.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_00]: Rubebub and berry jams and pies, homemade mushroom soup, with ingredients all source naturally from the forest around her home.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_00]: She prided herself in her ingredients.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_00]: On the day of the lunch, the elder patisons collected past the Wilkinson and his wife Heather about 30 minutes before the lunch.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_00]: And as they drove to the patisons home, Heather noticed that Simon's car wasn't there.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_00]: Past the Wilkinson recalled that once they were inside the house, Aaron was keen that they stay out of the kitchen.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_00]: But she told them that she would make it beef Wellington use a mushrooms that she'd only picked herself down morning.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_00]: as they pulled out their chairs, darn partisan joke with the pastor.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_00]: That he hadn't recalled them having a lunch that big with so many guests when the couple were together, much less apart.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_00]: The witch's wife laughed uncomfortably.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_00]: Despite Aaron and his son being a strange, darn partisan like Aaron, he taught science at the local school and even worked on the local newspaper and he considered Aaron an intelligent, witty woman that he enjoyed conversating with.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_00]: And if he was being honest, there weren't a lot of intelligent people in the town that consisted of laborers and unemployed bombs.
- 11:23[SPEAKER_00]: Where men with mollets wearing Daisy Duke shorts and singlets were the uniform of the day.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_00]: So even if his son wasn't going to attend the luncheon, may figure it was still going to be good because Aaron was a good cook, and he's looking forward to it.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_00]: As the gas seeded themselves, Aaron boasted everyone present that she had forked out for the finest beef, a beef to die for, one may lyrically waxed.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_00]: I guess you could say that it was going to be a meal at everyone would remember.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_00]: When Aaron brought out lunch, she seemed excited.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_00]: Beef Wellington with a side of mashed potatoes and green beans.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_00]: Bon appétit.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_00]: The eager guests polished down their lunches with Heather Wilkinson and Gail Patterson having seconds.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_00]: And after a dessert and a rhubarb pie and coffee, they all said that goodbye.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_00]: The next day though, all four of the guests woke up feeling incredibly ill, with nausea and diarrhea.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_00]: One paramedic gave an interview stating that past a Wilkinson and his wife had a, was shitting themselves so badly that we sprang out, like a hose, and that he'd never seen anything like it.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_00]: unbeknownst to each other, all four of the guests arrived at the hospital within an hour of each other, dying a couple of days later, had the being the first followed by her sister Gail, surely thereafter, with both of their organs shutting down, rushing to see his parents, Simon, had said they'd been in the same room, and that his father had seemed worse.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_00]: His mother was at least talking and had some color in her face.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_00]: But I guess she was the stronger one.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_00]: But in the end, she got taken just the same.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_00]: Donk Patterson, he lived the whole extra day.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_00]: But I guess during that extra day, he'd wish he'd gone the same time as his wife, because his excruciating screams of pain could be heard throughout the ward.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_00]: And I guess the Lord must have been showing favor on Pastor Wilkinson, because just as he was about to slip into the abyss, a road accident in fact, they were able to donate their organ to him.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_00]: And he was able to come out the other side, while barely.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_00]: It was Aaron's husband who'd contact to the kangaroo riding cops, and in her recorded police interview six days after the lunch,
- 14:19[SPEAKER_00]: just after Heather Wilkinson and Gail Patterson had died, and a couple hours before the armed Patterson would join him.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_00]: She denied picking the mushrooms that had killed him.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_00]: She said she bought him at some chink, grocery, and town, but she couldn't remember which one, but you know that there were chinks.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_00]: Her words don't mind.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_00]: But either way, she told him that she shared herself too, and she had the dirty drawers to prove it.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_00]: But I gas cops figured that she were the type to shit herself whether she'd eaten poison mushrooms or not.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_00]: And they weren't buying what she was trying to sell them.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_00]: When they checked on her phone, they saw pictures of her weighing yellowish mushrooms on a scale.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_00]: The late detective showed her the picture and said, I put it to you.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_00]: This looks like the kind of thing that an intelligent woman would do.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_00]: When she's weighing how much poisonous mushrooms would take, the kill and individual.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_00]: Am I right or am I wrong?
- 15:21[SPEAKER_00]: Aaron Patterson answered, you're wrong.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_00]: Aaron Patterson was released on bail, but police believe for whatever reason she'd murdered three of her guests that day, while only falling slightly short, a murder in the fourth, but now they had to prove it.
- 15:49[SPEAKER_00]: The first flaw that Investigate is found in Aaron Patterson's story was that she'd bought her mushrooms at a Chinese grocer.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_00]: They checked all areas CCTV and no one knows sign of a gun in ten of the stores.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_00]: Chinese or otherwise.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_00]: And when they'd asked her during her initial police interview, if she'd owned a food dehydrator, the type that you'd need to use to try the mushrooms to put in her beef Wellington, she said she didn't, and she never had.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_00]: But when they checked hours of CCTV footage, while surprise a price, that was footage of Aaron Throne Warner at her local dump.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_00]: When they spoke the past of Wilkinson fresh from under the knife after receiving his brand the liver, he told him he remembered that his wife had found it hard, that all the gas plates were grey, except for errands who had no inch one, also that she'd made two separate beef well-entons.
- 16:49[SPEAKER_00]: and and says that no one came into the kitchen while she was serving them.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_00]: One of these things alone might not be incriminating, but when you put them all together, the evidence is compelling.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_00]: And it certainly doesn't paint a pretty picture for the road toned, Nightjella Lawson.
- 17:11[SPEAKER_00]: With Aaron Patterson pleading not guilty, the prosecutions case against the hinged up on four major disruptions.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_00]: Number one, the fabrication of cancer claim that she'd used to get everybody to come to lunch.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_00]: Pity, the base is corner is.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_00]: Number two, the lethal dose is a poison that will found in the beef Wellington.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_00]: Number three, her saying she didn't and never had owned the dehydrator, but then I'm finding footage of her dumping one, three days later.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_00]: Number four, her buying mushrooms at the Chinaman's Grocer and saying she don't remember which one.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, sure.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_00]: I know they all look alike, but you not remember on which one seems highly unlikely.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_00]: During the trial, photos of the leftover beef Wellington was shown to the court and a dog that David Lovelock, who specializes in plant and bacteria, and he was able to pinpoint from the pitches, the traces of bacteria.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_00]: During the week-long trial, Pastor Wilkinson had also testified saying how his wife had noticed they all had the same color plates, except for Aaron, who was eating from an orange one.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_00]: A police appointed Dr.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_00]: Testified that he could find no trace of poison in Aaron Patterson's stool sample that she'd submitted to the police.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_00]: And at the fence, she said the reason they couldn't find any poison was because she'd eaten too much rhubarb pie and made herself to roll up.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_00]: As for the reasons she would caught on camera throwing away the dehydrator at the dump.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_00]: She said when everybody got sick, she panicked and figured she might have picked the wrong mushrooms and she just did what anyone would do that didn't make her a killer.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_00]: A pair and outside of her home surely before her arrest.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_00]: Aaron Patterson said, I'm innocent.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't do anything.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_00]: I loved them.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_00]: They were some of the best people I've ever known.
- 19:02[SPEAKER_00]: I guess Aaron Patterson told too many lies and she couldn't keep up with them, and they caught up with her, and the jury found the guilty.
- 19:10[SPEAKER_00]: In Victoria, Australia, the maximum sentence for murder is life, typically 25 years.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_00]: Attent the murder also carries a maximum sentence at 25 years.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_00]: Aaron Patterson's husband Simon broke down when he cried in the witness box.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_00]: which, to me, seems like he's either lying or at some point in his life eats suffered from a serious brain injury.
- 19:40[SPEAKER_00]: When the prosecution asked him if his wife Aaron had ever prepared him before, he paused, and said no, thankfully never.
- 19:56[SPEAKER_00]: On September 8th, 2025, Aaron Patterson stood in front of the Supreme Court of Victoria and heard the words that were defined the rest of her life.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_00]: Three life sentences for murder, and a further 25 years for attempted murder, all to be served concurrently with a non-porr period of 33 years, meaning the earliest she can even ask for freedom was in 256, when she'll be in her 80s.
- 20:26[SPEAKER_00]: As just as Christopher Peel delivered his sentence, Madison showed no visible emotion.
- 20:32[SPEAKER_00]: Often sent with her eyes closed through most of the judges' remarks, only opening them briefly when staring down, and when the sentence was read, there was no emotional opus, as if she'd accepted her fate.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_00]: Three people gone forever, once a vibe of who will carry the memory of that table for the rest of their life.
- 20:54[SPEAKER_00]: Whether it was hatred, control, who warned the pride, Aaron Patterson will now live with her sins forever.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, I never learned my lesson If it's too good to be true, it is I thought we had this good connection But it was made out of tissue And she...
- 21:51[SPEAKER_01]: Because I want to call you up and ask you I want to stay just warm up
- 22:19[SPEAKER_01]: I trusted you with my confessions Was he crazy deep truth?
- 22:28[SPEAKER_01]: I keep...
- 22:33[SPEAKER_01]: But you avoided all my questions Now I don't know what you believe Did I ever really...
- 23:12[SPEAKER_01]: I try to look at my reflection There's nothing to see And see you Just a frame with no expression
- 23:40[SPEAKER_00]: You've been listening to a dead bug podcast and remember to spread my shit like syphilis Because I'm shadow band on most platforms so you are the only one who's going to get me out there and get people here
