- 0:00Speaker 1: Simms.
- 0:01Speaker 2: How fired up were you just to have football on
- 0:03Speaker 2: your television?
- 0:04Speaker 1: I know you.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I don't care if it's preseason week number one, I
- 0:07Speaker 2: don't care if it's bad football. How fired up were
- 0:09Speaker 2: you just to have football on your television screen last night?
- 0:13Speaker 3: Huh? What like Stu Gott's first off? Yeah? These are
- 0:16Speaker 3: like monumental moments, especially, I mean last week the Hall
- 0:18Speaker 3: of Fame game, So that's nice. There's nothing to watch
- 0:21Speaker 3: on TV right now, there's nothing. I mean since the
- 0:24Speaker 3: World Cup ended. I've been tortured. I don't really trust
- 0:28Speaker 3: my Yankees and the way they're playing, so you know,
- 0:30Speaker 3: again you know my stories with them. But last night
- 0:34Speaker 3: it was my son's sixteenth birthday yesterday nice, and he
- 0:38Speaker 3: had some friends over and the family was over. But
- 0:40Speaker 3: when it hit six forty five Eastern time, I mean,
- 0:43Speaker 3: I was on the couch. I had the computer in
- 0:46Speaker 3: front of me because you know, I'm trying to watch
- 0:48Speaker 3: multiple games to keep my eyes on certain guys and
- 0:50Speaker 3: all that. I loved it. Man. I sat there all
- 0:53Speaker 3: night and a little drinky, drinky, smoky smoking and watched
- 0:56Speaker 3: all the preseason action.
- 0:58Speaker 2: You and I were laughing, because this is how I
- 1:00Speaker 2: do the preseason. I put it on one of the TVs.
- 1:03Speaker 2: I'm not really paying attention. I just need football in
- 1:06Speaker 2: one of my television screens. And then I look over
- 1:09Speaker 2: at Drew Aller and I'm like, oh, wow, forgot about him.
- 1:13Speaker 2: That guy looks like he belonged. He's got a chance.
- 1:16Speaker 2: How about that?
- 1:17Speaker 3: Well, I think that's what you do. That's the point
- 1:20Speaker 3: of preseason. I mean, you can't over evaluate it. You
- 1:22Speaker 3: just want to see does the guy belong Does he
- 1:25Speaker 3: look physically correct? Is he as big as I thought
- 1:27Speaker 3: he would look on the field, Is the arm as
- 1:30Speaker 3: powerful as I thought? Is the guy as fast as
- 1:32Speaker 3: I thought? With NFL players all those things, that's all
- 1:35Speaker 3: you can do. The game is very simple schematically, so
- 1:38Speaker 3: it's got to be more about just evaluating the players.
- 1:40Speaker 3: And no doubt that Drew Aller was one of the
- 1:43Speaker 3: stars of last night's preseason football because there was, of course,
- 1:47Speaker 3: a polarizing subject coming out in the in the draft, Yeah,
- 1:51Speaker 3: I didn't love him. I know he's big and he
- 1:53Speaker 3: had he had one of the strongest arms in the draft,
- 1:56Speaker 3: so I get that, But I mean, miss throws, bad decision,
- 2:00Speaker 3: you know, mechanics all over the place, the offense in
- 2:05Speaker 3: Penn State stunk and they did no help or gave
- 2:08Speaker 3: him no help. So those are the things you just went, well,
- 2:11Speaker 3: I don't know. He's a tough evaluation. He is. He's
- 2:14Speaker 3: extremely raw. We heard that Pittsburgh when he first got there.
- 2:17Speaker 3: They were like, we basically got to start at you know,
- 2:19Speaker 3: back to ground zero with the Drew Aller. But the
- 2:22Speaker 3: one thing you saw last night is they've cleaned up
- 2:24Speaker 3: his mechanics and he had his body in the right
- 2:27Speaker 3: position more times than not. You see that the ball
- 2:31Speaker 3: pops out of his hands. Yeah, Will Howard looked good
- 2:33Speaker 3: last night, don't get me wrong, But it doesn't catch
- 2:36Speaker 3: your eye like Drew Aller, where you go, Oh, that
- 2:38Speaker 3: looks like a starting NFL quarterback, so let's see where
- 2:41Speaker 3: it goes. But I was impressed, and you know, even
- 2:45Speaker 3: his motion was more efficient, a little quicker, like he's
- 2:47Speaker 3: been watching Aaron Rodgers in practice every day. Yeah, I was.
- 2:51Speaker 3: I was very impressed in a good start for Drew Aller.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Sim did you ever get nervous before preseason games?
- 2:57Speaker 3: Definitely, especially like those first I always got nervous before
- 3:01Speaker 3: preseason games. Yeah, I got always. I just just how
- 3:04Speaker 3: I was right.
- 3:05Speaker 1: It makes you feel alive, right, yes, yeah.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Well you feel exactly right. You feel alive. You know,
- 3:09Speaker 3: you sit there and you're going, you know, hey, I'm
- 3:11Speaker 3: playing for John Gruden. He's a psycho. He doesn't care
- 3:14Speaker 3: it's a preseason. If I don't get everything right and
- 3:15Speaker 3: make every right decision in check, he's gonna yell at
- 3:18Speaker 3: me like a Super Bowl, you know, fifty two. So
- 3:20Speaker 3: it doesn't matter. The one thing I loved about preseason
- 3:23Speaker 3: that I learned early on in my career, and I
- 3:25Speaker 3: think I've told you this before, but you know, Gruden
- 3:28Speaker 3: has such a great experience there and in practice he
- 3:32Speaker 3: was all over me, right, He'd give me the play.
- 3:35Speaker 3: And as he was giving me the play, I mean,
- 3:37Speaker 3: as soon as I got in the huddled be like,
- 3:38Speaker 3: hurry up, hurry up, hurry ten nine height. And he
- 3:43Speaker 3: would do that to me at every play. So when
- 3:45Speaker 3: I got out of the preseason those first two years,
- 3:48Speaker 3: I was like, huh man, thank god, this little freaking
- 3:51Speaker 3: Napoleon's not back here five feet from me yelling in
- 3:54Speaker 3: my ear. And it actually made the games easier. It
- 3:56Speaker 3: made it easier, but yeah, I still was nervous. That
- 3:59Speaker 3: didn't change why he was coaching you too hard. There
- 4:01Speaker 3: was too much urgency, too much dress.
- 4:03Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, because everyone reacts differently to that stuff.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Sims. You know that well.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Exactly, And again I was. I came from that school
- 4:11Speaker 3: of you know, Bill Parcell's coach and my dad I
- 4:14Speaker 3: had an old school Italian coach in North Jersey who
- 4:17Speaker 3: you know, played under Vince Lombardi. So he believed in
- 4:20Speaker 3: you know, mother f and you and putting you in
- 4:22Speaker 3: your place all the time. I love that, And yeah,
- 4:25Speaker 3: I loved that I got coached like that by Gruden
- 4:28Speaker 3: on an everyday basis, and there was some genius behind
- 4:32Speaker 3: it to where then when I got on the game field,
- 4:34Speaker 3: I was like, oh, this actually kind of feels easier
- 4:37Speaker 3: than it didn't practice, and I don't have this psycho
- 4:39Speaker 3: yelling at me all the time. So that's where, you know,
- 4:42Speaker 3: I found the preseason to be a lot of fun.
- 4:44Speaker 3: And I was a guy that needed to play in
- 4:45Speaker 3: the preseason. I needed to be hit a few times
- 4:48Speaker 3: and feel the game a little bit. I didn't want
- 4:51Speaker 3: to just not play and then go into the regular
- 4:53Speaker 3: season just cold and go, oh it's the first game
- 4:55Speaker 3: of the year. Here we go.
- 4:57Speaker 1: You did an outstanding job. You're a great teammate.
- 4:59Speaker 2: You saw me funnel around with the audio settings because
- 5:02Speaker 2: I couldn't hear you for a second, and you spoke
- 5:04Speaker 2: long enough until I got back the ability to hear you.
- 5:08Speaker 2: I got it back. That was a great job by you.
- 5:10Speaker 2: You noticed all that, and we're in different places. I'm
- 5:13Speaker 2: very I've never been more impressed with you than I
- 5:15Speaker 2: am right now, Chris SAMs.
- 5:17Speaker 3: All quarterbacks have pocket presence. Man. I can look at
- 5:21Speaker 3: the camera and see you through my peripheral vision going
- 5:24Speaker 3: what the hell is he doing? Plus I know you.
- 5:26Speaker 3: I mean your name is Stu Gott's for a reason,
- 5:28Speaker 3: and you and I have a long history of when
- 5:30Speaker 3: they leave you to the technical stuff, something's gonna be
- 5:34Speaker 3: a freaking disaster. It's gonna be fucked up because you
- 5:37Speaker 3: don't know what the hell you're doing. You're an old man,
- 5:39Speaker 3: all right.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Well, yes, I'm an old man who's on vacation and
- 5:41Speaker 2: I'm so bored on vacation. I wanted to talk football
- 5:44Speaker 2: with you. How about mikey A and Taylor both saying
- 5:47Speaker 2: we're good. I asked them if they wanted to join today.
- 5:49Speaker 2: They're like good, Yeah, yeah, I'm I'm not shocked.
- 5:52Speaker 3: They're not all in. You know, they're not jim rats
- 5:54Speaker 3: like you and me. I mean, we're just for a
- 5:56Speaker 3: little different level. They're not that way. You know. They're
- 5:58Speaker 3: just their dip, their toe in the water kind of guys.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Or you know, let's let me. They worry about fantasy football,
- 6:03Speaker 3: not reality football. I already got them down.
- 6:06Speaker 2: We know them beft with Mike Florio every day on
- 6:09Speaker 2: Peacock the Unbuttoned podcast as well.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Our buddy Chris Simms is with us.
- 6:14Speaker 2: I'm just gonna say some quarterbacks names here, and you
- 6:18Speaker 2: tell me what comes to mind. Just guys who have
- 6:20Speaker 2: played already, you've seen them, and what comes to mind.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Carson Beck.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Smooth, Yes, smooth, I think is the first thing. And
- 6:28Speaker 3: NFL ready. That's the thing with Carson Beck. He's NFL ready.
- 6:33Speaker 3: He's played such big game football between Georgia and Miami.
- 6:36Speaker 3: They play a pretty pro style of quarterback offensive play there.
- 6:41Speaker 3: So that's where he's good. Now, I'll say, you know,
- 6:44Speaker 3: he's to me, I don't see starting quarterback for Carson Beck.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Just so you know, I think he is a high
- 6:50Speaker 3: end backup. Maybe one day he can be a bridge
- 6:54Speaker 3: quarterback and prove me wrong and say shut up, Simms.
- 6:57Speaker 3: But I kind of look at him more like he's
- 6:59Speaker 3: a Day Mills, right, That's how I kind of look
- 7:02Speaker 3: at it. But still, you're going to have a long career,
- 7:04Speaker 3: and if he does, you know, have to come in
- 7:07Speaker 3: for a starter or whatever else. He'll be able to
- 7:09Speaker 3: hold down the fort and run the offense, that's for sure.
- 7:11Speaker 1: All Right, we went over Drew Aller, Let's go to
- 7:14Speaker 1: Haines King.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Haines King, well, a little bit of a pretty impressive
- 7:18Speaker 3: Chris impressive, a little bit of a raw project. He's
- 7:21Speaker 3: really to me a lot like Riley Leonard who came
- 7:23Speaker 3: out of Notre Dame two years ago where you got man.
- 7:26Speaker 3: He's big, and you can see that he's an extremely
- 7:28Speaker 3: good athlete, and he has refined his throwing a little bit.
- 7:32Speaker 3: That's his big thing is you just got to become
- 7:34Speaker 3: more of a natural thrower. He's one of those guys
- 7:37Speaker 3: that you always hear me say where I go, there's
- 7:39Speaker 3: quarterbacks who are athletes, and then there's athletes who they go, hey,
- 7:43Speaker 3: he's such a good athlete, let's put him at quarterback.
- 7:45Speaker 3: And he's learning the quarterback stuff. Still I believe he
- 7:48Speaker 3: went to Texas A and M as a wide receiver
- 7:50Speaker 3: if I remember correctly, before he transferred to Georgia Tech.
- 7:53Speaker 3: So yes, you saw some good moments in that Hall
- 7:56Speaker 3: of Fame game. There was also some throws where I'd go, hey,
- 7:59Speaker 3: look that didn't look very very natural. He didn't need
- 8:01Speaker 3: to throw that appropriately. He's gonna learn that stuff. But
- 8:03Speaker 3: there's some potential there with Haynes King.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Yeah. I like him a lot, and he could run too.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Anthony Richardson, Well, I'll say this, I thought that was
- 8:12Speaker 3: a big step in the right direction last night through
- 8:14Speaker 3: Anthony Richardson. No doubt you got a little unlucky with
- 8:17Speaker 3: the interception. I didn't see the fumble. I've still got
- 8:20Speaker 3: to see that. I saw every throw of the game.
- 8:24Speaker 3: I was really impressed with Anthony Richardson. And here's the
- 8:28Speaker 3: big thing. One I've been saying all the week, like,
- 8:31Speaker 3: don't get traded, Anthony Richardson, don't don't. You're in the
- 8:34Speaker 3: perfect spot. You're with the offensive coach, you know the system,
- 8:38Speaker 3: you got talent around you, and you're backing up Daniel
- 8:41Speaker 3: Jones where if you made me bet money, he's gonna
- 8:43Speaker 3: get hurt. During the season at some point, and you're
- 8:45Speaker 3: gonna get a chance to play. And I don't know
- 8:47Speaker 3: if it'll be three games, one game, eight games, We
- 8:49Speaker 3: don't know, but we know Daniel Jones has a history,
- 8:52Speaker 3: so don't get traded. And to me, last night he
- 8:54Speaker 3: showed that he's pure surely a more gifted player and
- 8:58Speaker 3: thrower than Riley Lenard. And the big thing to me,
- 9:01Speaker 3: stew Gott say, is you know I'm a nerd. Has
- 9:03Speaker 3: he changed this throwing motion? You know, he had this
- 9:06Speaker 3: real long, floppy motion right where the arms. And then
- 9:10Speaker 3: if you watch last night and go back and watch
- 9:12Speaker 3: it back, it was very tight and efficient and I
- 9:16Speaker 3: thought he threw the ball with great accuracy. He got
- 9:18Speaker 3: the ball out of his hand quickly. Uh So, yeah,
- 9:21Speaker 3: stay the course, stay there, Anthony Richardson. But I thought
- 9:24Speaker 3: last night was a good step for him.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Mendoza, I agree with you and everything you said with Richardson.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Mendoza.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Here, this is gonna be interesting what the Raiders are
- 9:32Speaker 2: gonna do at starting quarterback.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Mendoza for me, look pretty good.
- 9:34Speaker 3: I know right exactly what we hear the same boat
- 9:36Speaker 3: crap every year. We're gonna we're gonna sit him the
- 9:39Speaker 3: whole year, he's never gonna play, and then they get
- 9:42Speaker 3: to the seventh day of training camp and they're like,
- 9:44Speaker 3: he's really fucking good. I think we need to play it.
- 9:46Speaker 3: Maybe before we next year. I think we got to
- 9:48Speaker 3: do that right. So that that that I mean, Mendoza
- 9:52Speaker 3: is an He's he's made for the NFL. That's why
- 9:55Speaker 3: I loved him. He's a guy that is a pure
- 9:59Speaker 3: surgical pocket passer. That's what he did Indiana in Indiana,
- 10:04Speaker 3: so he's ready for that. And you saw that last night.
- 10:06Speaker 3: I mean, one, he's big as hell. You see the
- 10:08Speaker 3: size on the field, his ability to read the field,
- 10:12Speaker 3: diagnose it, and throw the ball. I had said when
- 10:15Speaker 3: he came out in the draft, it's up there with
- 10:16Speaker 3: Joe Burrow where it's like he sees things and you're like, damn,
- 10:19Speaker 3: how did he see that that quickly? You saw a
- 10:21Speaker 3: number of plays last night where he looked, he looked,
- 10:24Speaker 3: he looked, and boomed through the ball, and you're like, damn,
- 10:26Speaker 3: that was perfect. I mean yeah, yeah. Then you see
- 10:30Speaker 3: the arm strength. You see he's got a quick release.
- 10:32Speaker 3: He's a better athlete than everybody gives him credit for.
- 10:35Speaker 3: And this is the thing that I find the funniest, right,
- 10:37Speaker 3: Stu Gotts, So it was we're gonna sit him, you know,
- 10:40Speaker 3: as long as we can. Now, you know, Kirk kirk
- 10:42Speaker 3: Cousins the starter, then that game, that game got over
- 10:45Speaker 3: and here was the quote. I don't know if it
- 10:47Speaker 3: was from this morning or last night, but Clint Kobiak, well,
- 10:50Speaker 3: it's it's Kirk Cousin's job to lose, right, So it's
- 10:54Speaker 3: already changed. It's already changed.
- 10:56Speaker 1: He's sitting right and.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Now it's well, he's it's his job to lose. So
- 11:01Speaker 3: we'll see where this goes. But I think we see
- 11:03Speaker 3: him sooner rather than later.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Was he pedaling backwards when he said it or going
- 11:07Speaker 1: you know what?
- 11:08Speaker 3: I don't know. I didn't see this. That's where I
- 11:10Speaker 3: got to see the clip. I just read it right,
- 11:12Speaker 3: because you're right the way he says it. But the
- 11:14Speaker 3: fact that he even said that to me was shows
- 11:18Speaker 3: you that there's a door that it cracked open a
- 11:20Speaker 3: little bit, and it's been cracking open. And so we'll
- 11:22Speaker 3: see how that goes there.
- 11:23Speaker 2: If you're running that organization, though you're starting Mendoza right.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Totally, I'm a believe you gotta play you gotta play football.
- 11:29Speaker 3: And I know people are going to look at it
- 11:31Speaker 3: and go, you know, oh, well tom Brady sat his
- 11:33Speaker 3: first year. Okay, yeah, tom Brady was a sixth round
- 11:36Speaker 3: pick one. And you know what I always say though
- 11:38Speaker 3: about a lot of people, I just go, well, but
- 11:40Speaker 3: if Tom Brady played his first year, I bet you
- 11:42Speaker 3: he'd have been better in the second year, and then
- 11:44Speaker 3: they would have been able to put more on them.
- 11:45Speaker 3: They've been more dominant. Same thing I say with Patrick Mahomes. Damn, yeah,
- 11:49Speaker 3: he sat the first year. The second year he threw
- 11:50Speaker 3: for fifty touchdowns, but maybe he would have had a
- 11:53Speaker 3: little more experience and checked to a few different plays.
- 11:55Speaker 3: If he played the first year, then they would have
- 11:56Speaker 3: beat the Patriots in the AFC Championship game. So that's
- 11:59Speaker 3: where I look at it. Peyton Manning played his first year.
- 12:01Speaker 3: The next year, it was like, oh shit, he's in
- 12:03Speaker 3: the MVP conversation and the culture thirteen and three. So
- 12:06Speaker 3: that's where I would go, as long as they feel
- 12:08Speaker 3: the team is ready to at least support him, right,
- 12:11Speaker 3: you know, that's one of my things. The team has
- 12:13Speaker 3: to be like, can we block, can we run the
- 12:15Speaker 3: ball a little bit? We don't want to just throw
- 12:17Speaker 3: our quarterback, our prize possession into that type of formula.
- 12:20Speaker 3: But if they show they can do that, then yeah,
- 12:22Speaker 3: I say go with Mendoza all the way.
- 12:24Speaker 2: I only ask about the next guy because the head
- 12:26Speaker 2: coach and the offensive coordinator, Trey Lance.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Yeah, well, I hear you. I saw Trey Lance. I
- 12:33Speaker 3: didn't watch a ton of Trey Lance last night, but
- 12:35Speaker 3: I know, I know he played pretty good. And the
- 12:37Speaker 3: one thing that jumped out to me about the Chargers,
- 12:39Speaker 3: and I think people are sleeping on the Charges, especially
- 12:42Speaker 3: with Mike McDaniel's doc is, yeah, he was in San
- 12:45Speaker 3: Francisco when they drafted him, so he knows what Trey
- 12:47Speaker 3: Lance is all about. He's going to understand that Trey
- 12:51Speaker 3: Lance has refined the way he throws the ball and
- 12:53Speaker 3: become more consistent that way to where you look at
- 12:56Speaker 3: it now. I would have told you two years ago
- 12:58Speaker 3: you don't want Trey Lance to be your backup. That's
- 13:00Speaker 3: freaking crazy. There's no way now, I go, Hey, Trey
- 13:03Speaker 3: Lance is a viable backup. He's perfect, that's perfect where
- 13:06Speaker 3: he is there. The one thing with the Chargers, if
- 13:08Speaker 3: that old line stays healthy, they're gonna be scary on
- 13:11Speaker 3: the offensive side of the ball because I think they
- 13:13Speaker 3: got weapons of receiver Omarion Hampton's damn good and that
- 13:17Speaker 3: old line is one of the best in football. And
- 13:19Speaker 3: now you coupled that with Mike McDaniel and what we
- 13:21Speaker 3: see saw last night. I saw a few runs last
- 13:23Speaker 3: night and I was like, oh, damn, they're gonna be
- 13:24Speaker 3: a machine running the ball. I mean, creativity blocked perfectly.
- 13:28Speaker 3: And that's where you know, I'm excited for the Chargers
- 13:30Speaker 3: and their opportunities this year.
- 13:32Speaker 2: When you consider the obvious physical talents and now you
- 13:35Speaker 2: have Mike McDaniel as the OC.
- 13:37Speaker 1: This is kind of a make it or break a
- 13:39Speaker 1: year here for Justin Herbert. Is that fair?
- 13:41Speaker 3: Well, I don't know if I would say he's already
- 13:43Speaker 3: made it, right, So that's ridiculous, right, yeah, yeah, he's
- 13:45Speaker 3: the man already. But I think this is the year
- 13:48Speaker 3: where and I'm a defender of Justin Herbert because for now,
- 13:51Speaker 3: you know, you've heard me in the Chargers charging was
- 13:55Speaker 3: a thing just two years ago. Yeah, yeah, Hey, it's
- 13:57Speaker 3: the end of the game. Somebody's gonna screw it up
- 13:59Speaker 3: for the Charger. It's like, hey, yeah, so that wasn't
- 14:01Speaker 3: justin Herbert. I mean, come on, so now it's like,
- 14:04Speaker 3: I know he didn't win playoff games and all that,
- 14:06Speaker 3: he's one of the best quarterbacks in football, and now
- 14:08Speaker 3: he's not gonna have to do everything that they'll be
- 14:11Speaker 3: They should be able to run the ball if the
- 14:13Speaker 3: old line stays healthy. And as we know, I mean
- 14:16Speaker 3: every game and the Chargers are big plays. Is like
- 14:19Speaker 3: he's standing in the pocket, standing in the pocket. Oh,
- 14:22Speaker 3: he throws a forty yard laser as he's getting crushed. Hey,
- 14:24Speaker 3: no big deal. Now they're gonna give him some easy
- 14:27Speaker 3: completions like you saw two. Oh, here's a four yard throw. Oh,
- 14:31Speaker 3: the guy runs for sixty. Look at that. You're one
- 14:33Speaker 3: for one for sixty yards. He's not gonna have the
- 14:35Speaker 3: burden of having to make these incredible, physical, gifted plays
- 14:39Speaker 3: all the time. They're gonna make the game easier for him.
- 14:41Speaker 3: And that's where I'm excited for Herbert Sims.
- 14:44Speaker 2: It's interesting because a lot of people are surprised that
- 14:47Speaker 2: Kyler Murray is going to be the starting quarterback in Minnesota,
- 14:50Speaker 2: and I'm saying to myself, you don't get Kyler Murray
- 14:53Speaker 2: to not start Kyler Murray. To not try to see
- 14:56Speaker 2: and realize and get the upside of Kyler Murray. Why
- 14:59Speaker 2: would not be Kyler Murray. You weren't surprised by that,
- 15:02Speaker 2: were you?
- 15:03Speaker 3: Not? At all? I mean, on Monday on my show,
- 15:05Speaker 3: on the show with Florio on PFT, before they named
- 15:09Speaker 3: him the starter, I went on a huge thing going,
- 15:12Speaker 3: what are we wasting our time with? Like you really
- 15:15Speaker 3: think the locker room and the fan base are all
- 15:16Speaker 3: gonna buy into, Hey, JJ McCarthy's the starter in week one.
- 15:20Speaker 3: I'm not saying I'm giving up on JJ McCarthy. I
- 15:22Speaker 3: think he can be a starting quarterback in the NFL.
- 15:24Speaker 3: I don't drop that, but it's just not right right now.
- 15:27Speaker 3: And to your point, they brought Kyler Murray in there
- 15:29Speaker 3: to be that guy. This was the only way. This
- 15:32Speaker 3: is the only way, and it's the only way for
- 15:34Speaker 3: JJ McCarthy. It is. You know, he could have been
- 15:38Speaker 3: the starter and they could start out two and oh,
- 15:40Speaker 3: but if the offense didn't look good, everybody's gonna go, wow,
- 15:42Speaker 3: we need to bench. We got to we're two and oh,
- 15:43Speaker 3: but the quarterback we got to put in Kyler Murray.
- 15:46Speaker 3: It has to go the other way around. He's the
- 15:48Speaker 3: new prize possession. He's Kyler Murray. Yes, has never been
- 15:51Speaker 3: in a place like this with this type of offensive line,
- 15:54Speaker 3: these receivers and a quarterback guru coaching them. So you
- 15:57Speaker 3: look at the potential there. I think that's exciting. But
- 16:02Speaker 3: like Lake I said with Anthony Richardson a little bit,
- 16:04Speaker 3: just stay the course of course, JJ McCarthy. I mean,
- 16:07Speaker 3: Kyler Murray is one of the smallest quarterbacks in the game.
- 16:10Speaker 3: He's shown he gets hurt too. When you get your chance,
- 16:13Speaker 3: you just got to be ready to go. And I
- 16:15Speaker 3: think that's the only way he's gonna get back into
- 16:17Speaker 3: the graces of the you know, the locker room and
- 16:20Speaker 3: the fan base to believe them. It couldn't go the
- 16:23Speaker 3: other way around. So totally you agree with you and
- 16:25Speaker 3: had to be Kyler Murray. That's the way it should be.
- 16:27Speaker 3: And I feel the same way in Cleveland it should
- 16:29Speaker 3: be Shador Sanders and let's just move on.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Well, that's funny.
- 16:32Speaker 2: I was going to ask you that, right because if
- 16:33Speaker 2: you read my mind, if you're the Browns, you're not
- 16:37Speaker 2: gonna be any good with Deshaun Watson. Why not see
- 16:39Speaker 2: what you have headed into a great quarterback draft with
- 16:41Speaker 2: Shador Sanders find out if you have a quarterback or not.
- 16:44Speaker 3: I think they know that. I think they know that.
- 16:46Speaker 3: I think they're getting there. And you know, one, I
- 16:49Speaker 3: think Deshaun Watson won OTAs right. He might have won
- 16:52Speaker 3: the first few days of training camp. And of course
- 16:54Speaker 3: they've paid them all this money, so they they're going
- 16:57Speaker 3: to try to get something out of them. And I
- 17:00Speaker 3: think that you listen to anybody or talk to anybody
- 17:03Speaker 3: out in Cleveland, they're gonna tell you that. Really after
- 17:06Speaker 3: the first day or two, Shador Sanders has whooped Watson's
- 17:10Speaker 3: ass really other than maybe one day, and most of
- 17:13Speaker 3: the big plays in camp are being made by Shaduur.
- 17:16Speaker 3: So yeah, I just go it's inevitable. I mean, come on,
- 17:20Speaker 3: what are we doing. We know Deshaun Watson's not the
- 17:22Speaker 3: long term answer, and we haven't seen Deshaun Watson play
- 17:25Speaker 3: good football since Houston, and I don't think he's ever
- 17:28Speaker 3: in my opinion, I don't think he's capable of doing
- 17:31Speaker 3: it ever. Again, you know, it's just one of those
- 17:33Speaker 3: things where when you're away from the game that long
- 17:36Speaker 3: and your aura and your karma and everything had been
- 17:39Speaker 3: messed with because of the things that happened off the field.
- 17:42Speaker 3: And I tell people all the time, it's hard to
- 17:43Speaker 3: go into a room and be real charismatic when you
- 17:46Speaker 3: know everybody in the room's going, Hey, there's the guy
- 17:48Speaker 3: with the massage parlor. Hey, that's the guy that had
- 17:51Speaker 3: all the lawsuits. I mean, that's gonna take away some
- 17:53Speaker 3: of your charisma and some of who you are. And
- 17:56Speaker 3: I feel like that's been lost, along with some of
- 17:58Speaker 3: the natural feel of the the quarterback position. On the field.
- 18:01Speaker 1: He's living with demons man, and everyone knows exactly.
- 18:04Speaker 3: It's hard, you know, you know, whether what you think
- 18:07Speaker 3: or not. He hears that whispers, those whispers, and he's
- 18:09Speaker 3: walking in and he knows everybody's looking at him like that.
- 18:12Speaker 3: So it's hard to be, yeah, have a real charismatic
- 18:16Speaker 3: aura like that when you've gone through some of that
- 18:18Speaker 3: and you know people are kind of talking behind your back.
- 18:21Speaker 1: So the Bucks and the Jets play tonight.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Should Baker Mayfield feel disrespected by two years one hundred
- 18:26Speaker 2: million dollars, I mean, disrespect me with that any time?
- 18:30Speaker 1: Sims.
- 18:30Speaker 3: You know, Yeah, it's a tough thing.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Well, I know he wants the years, but two years,
- 18:35Speaker 2: one hundred million, fifty million a year to play quarterback
- 18:37Speaker 2: when you were dead in the water a couple of
- 18:39Speaker 2: years ago.
- 18:39Speaker 1: Seems like a fair offer, you.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Know, yeah, oh I get it. But now he's going, hey,
- 18:43Speaker 3: this it's three years in a row. I've whooped outs
- 18:45Speaker 3: for you guys, and we go to the playoffs and
- 18:47Speaker 3: I took over maybe the hardest spot to play quarterback
- 18:50Speaker 3: in football after Tom Brady, and we didn't really miss
- 18:52Speaker 3: too much of a beat and we went to the playoffs.
- 18:54Speaker 3: So yeah, I think it is about the years. A
- 18:58Speaker 3: lot of people thought, wait the number is it to
- 19:01Speaker 3: start with the five? Is to start with the four?
- 19:03Speaker 3: I think he's looking at it going, wait, wait, I'm
- 19:05Speaker 3: your franchise quarterback. I've done this. I see all these
- 19:07Speaker 3: other franchise quarterbacks getting multiple years and guarantees that go
- 19:10Speaker 3: beyond that. Then that's where he feels disrespected. And he
- 19:14Speaker 3: probably even with just fifty million. And I'm with you.
- 19:17Speaker 3: But again, like there's an old saying like the market
- 19:19Speaker 3: is the market right? Yes, and yes, he's gonna look
- 19:21Speaker 3: at some guys that are getting more than him, going
- 19:23Speaker 3: like what the hell, I'm better than that guy? Like
- 19:25Speaker 3: how the hell, is he gonna get more and then
- 19:27Speaker 3: have four years guaranteed and do that? So I can
- 19:30Speaker 3: understand it. Hopefully they can figure it out, but I
- 19:33Speaker 3: don't think they're gonna figure it out right now because
- 19:35Speaker 3: Baker doesn't want to hear that crap. You know.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Weird. Well, he plays better like that, I think, but
- 19:39Speaker 1: in a weird way.
- 19:39Speaker 2: They didn't slot him in like you've been complaining about
- 19:42Speaker 2: team just slotting certain guys in, and they didn't factor
- 19:45Speaker 2: any of that in. They just said, hey, two years,
- 19:46Speaker 2: one hundred million, you've done a lot for us, We've
- 19:48Speaker 2: done a lot for you. Here's an extra hundred million dollars.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Yeah, it's not the worst I understand, but I think
- 19:54Speaker 3: also I think it's more about he's just looking at
- 19:56Speaker 3: other quarterbacks in his position with not the same resume, going, wait,
- 19:59Speaker 3: they guarantees and things that go beyond that, and that's
- 20:02Speaker 3: where that's where it is. But but yeah, like you know,
- 20:06Speaker 3: the one thing you say about the Bucks to your
- 20:08Speaker 3: point is yet they're not gonna go, oh, we just
- 20:10Speaker 3: got this guy. We're gonna make him the highest paid guy,
- 20:12Speaker 3: like a stupid bunch of idiots, even though he's not
- 20:13Speaker 3: worth that like you know, like we've talked about with
- 20:15Speaker 3: the Dolphins and two and all that, so they can
- 20:17Speaker 3: justify their great move why they ruin the football team.
- 20:20Speaker 3: So yeah, they've been good and this is right. He
- 20:24Speaker 3: doesn't deserve to be at the top of the list,
- 20:27Speaker 3: but he deserves to be in the top ten of
- 20:28Speaker 3: the list right when you put up a graphic and
- 20:30Speaker 3: that's where you know, I do feel for Baker.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Just quickly here.
- 20:34Speaker 2: This stay the course stuff is such a great it's
- 20:36Speaker 2: it really is. It's it's a great point by you
- 20:39Speaker 2: because you told Anthony Richardson, just stay the course, stay
- 20:42Speaker 2: the course, stay the course. The guy who's starting in
- 20:44Speaker 2: front of him just stayed the course and he's starting.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Football is such a funny game. He's gonna get his opportunity.
- 20:49Speaker 3: Again, exactly, stay the course, going somewhere else and now
- 20:53Speaker 3: trying to impress yourself on a new system. And oh,
- 20:56Speaker 3: I got to get these coaches in the locker room
- 20:58Speaker 3: to believe in me. It's more work than people think.
- 21:01Speaker 3: You're not just gonna go there. You've built up some goodwill.
- 21:04Speaker 3: They did draft you. The GM's there, you know, the
- 21:07Speaker 3: head coach. Yeah, I know, he's starting Daniel Jones. But
- 21:09Speaker 3: he sees and says nice things about you, and he
- 21:12Speaker 3: knows you got talent, and he knows how to use
- 21:15Speaker 3: a guy like you. So yeah, that's where stay the course.
- 21:18Speaker 3: It's a tough freaking job playing quarterback in the NFL
- 21:22Speaker 3: for everybody other than about four people in the history
- 21:25Speaker 3: of the sport is like, how do you deal with failure?
- 21:28Speaker 3: How do your whole I tell kids this all the time.
- 21:30Speaker 3: Football is about failure. That's the sport. Sorry, I mean,
- 21:34Speaker 3: my dad heet fifteen years in the NFL. You know,
- 21:37Speaker 3: Super Bowl MVP. Damn, He'll probably tell you about more
- 21:39Speaker 3: of his failures and his successes. It's just the way
- 21:42Speaker 3: it is. Yes, that's what you're always battling back from. Right,
- 21:44Speaker 3: They stick with you. Yeah, you gotta learn to deal
- 21:47Speaker 3: with it. That's part of it, no.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Doubt, Sims. I'll get you out of here in a second.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Jets offense. Too many people are telling me too many
- 21:53Speaker 2: good things. I don't want to hear about it. Tell
- 21:55Speaker 2: me they're going to be lousy, Please, No, I don't
- 21:58Speaker 2: think they are.
- 21:59Speaker 3: I don't you know. I think you got your old
- 22:00Speaker 3: lines got potentially you got a damn good running back.
- 22:03Speaker 3: If a Dona Mitchell comes through a receiver, you go
- 22:06Speaker 3: ooh him with Garrett Wilson, Okay, I like that the
- 22:08Speaker 3: tight end position. I think the offensive scheme fits Geno
- 22:13Speaker 3: Smith perfectly. Frank Reich is a guy that, yeah, he's
- 22:16Speaker 3: gonna run the ball a little bit and when he
- 22:18Speaker 3: throws the ball, he's gonna throw the ball down the
- 22:20Speaker 3: field and be aggressive. And I think that's right up
- 22:21Speaker 3: Gino's alley. And anybody you talked to that went to
- 22:23Speaker 3: Jets camp, all they just talk about is just like
- 22:26Speaker 3: you know, last year, it was justin fields. So the
- 22:30Speaker 3: ball was like, Hey, it's gonna hit the ground every
- 22:32Speaker 3: other throw. That's just the way it's gonna be. And
- 22:34Speaker 3: it's gonna look ugly. And people that go there now go,
- 22:37Speaker 3: holy cow. They're letting it fly and they're aggressive and
- 22:39Speaker 3: they don't have to worry about managing the quarterback of like, oh,
- 22:42Speaker 3: he can't throw that throw very good, he can't throw
- 22:45Speaker 3: that route very good. And so yeah, there's some potential
- 22:47Speaker 3: there with the Jets, for sure.
- 22:49Speaker 2: It's funny Seattle, after winning a Super Bowl, has become
- 22:52Speaker 2: the team that can take a look at Terry and
- 22:54Speaker 2: Arnold and get very little if no blowback whatsoever.
- 22:58Speaker 1: What do you make of this? It's a good signing.
- 23:00Speaker 3: Well, yeah, it's rare. It's rare, you're right. I mean
- 23:03Speaker 3: we don't see teams sign a guy who has a
- 23:06Speaker 3: pending legal situation very often. Right, So there's a lot
- 23:10Speaker 3: of things I think that go into this one. He's
- 23:13Speaker 3: a first round pick. I always say first round picks
- 23:15Speaker 3: get nine lives. You know how many times have we
- 23:17Speaker 3: seen a first round pick go well, this is an
- 23:19Speaker 3: eleventh team. You know, every team goes well, I'll be
- 23:21Speaker 3: in a first round grade on him. We'll be able
- 23:23Speaker 3: to make him look like the first rounder. Here we go,
- 23:26Speaker 3: So that always happens. The other thing that's important here
- 23:30Speaker 3: is Terry on Arnold. His thing coming out in the
- 23:34Speaker 3: draft was how great of a guy he was? Right Alabama?
- 23:37Speaker 3: Nick Saban said it, everybody said it. His character got
- 23:40Speaker 3: him over drafted. He shouldn't have been a first round corner.
- 23:43Speaker 3: I mean he got drafted by the Detroit Lions, who
- 23:45Speaker 3: played more man demand than any team in the NFL,
- 23:48Speaker 3: and he couldn't play Manda man and that's why they
- 23:50Speaker 3: let him go. I mean, he's a walking past interference penalty.
- 23:53Speaker 3: That's what he was and Alabama I was always when
- 23:56Speaker 3: he was coming out. He goes, this is not one
- 23:57Speaker 3: of the top corners in the draft. Nick Saban likes
- 23:59Speaker 3: to play more than any college coach in the game.
- 24:02Speaker 3: And he won't play man de man with him in
- 24:04Speaker 3: kool aid McKinstry because they can't do it. So that
- 24:07Speaker 3: was to me, it was just a huge clue. But
- 24:09Speaker 3: so he goes to Seattle and like you said, they
- 24:12Speaker 3: got the good will because Mike McDonald's done everything right,
- 24:15Speaker 3: they won the Super Bowl. I don't think they sign
- 24:18Speaker 3: him unless they believe what he and his representation are
- 24:21Speaker 3: telling him about the real story. So they obviously believe
- 24:24Speaker 3: that and they're getting behind that. The other thing that's
- 24:26Speaker 3: good here is Seattle doesn't play Manda Man. They rarely
- 24:29Speaker 3: do it, and that's perfect for Terry on Arnold. He's
- 24:32Speaker 3: a good football player, he's smart, he's got good football IQ,
- 24:35Speaker 3: he tackles, he does all that. Well. You just don't
- 24:38Speaker 3: want him on an island man demand against Marvin Harrison
- 24:41Speaker 3: Junior or or you know, Pooka Nakua. They will absolutely
- 24:45Speaker 3: tear him up. But so so it's a good system
- 24:47Speaker 3: fit and yeah, we'll see where it goes. But yeah,
- 24:50Speaker 3: there's a lot to see where it goes with the
- 24:52Speaker 3: legal issues he's got.
- 24:53Speaker 2: What do you hearing, your boy, Mahomes? Is he looking
- 24:55Speaker 2: like the old Patrick Mahomes. He's gonna play week one, right?
- 24:57Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, yeah, he's playing Week one.
- 25:00Speaker 3: I mean, you know, I know Mahomes well enough and
- 25:03Speaker 3: talk to him every now and then too. I mean,
- 25:05Speaker 3: he was telling me he was playing Week one in
- 25:07Speaker 3: the middle of the spring, So that's not even a
- 25:09Speaker 3: you know, you've got to worry about that. Now it's
- 25:11Speaker 3: gonna be Is he the Mahomes? We know he can be.
- 25:13Speaker 3: I doubt that, you know, the movement, the magic plays.
- 25:16Speaker 3: This might be the the greatest gift of his career though,
- 25:19Speaker 3: because now maybe this will make him Okay, I'm gonna
- 25:22Speaker 3: have to play a little different way and kind of
- 25:23Speaker 3: bring out a different skill set of him, like getting
- 25:27Speaker 3: the ball out quick all the time and not always
- 25:28Speaker 3: going ooh yeah, that guy might have been open, but
- 25:31Speaker 3: I'm Mahomes. I'll down dance back here and true find
- 25:33Speaker 3: a bigger play. Right. It might do him a lot
- 25:36Speaker 3: of good here, But I don't think we're gonna see
- 25:37Speaker 3: total perfect. Patrick mahomes right away early in the season.
- 25:41Speaker 2: All right, Sims, get out of here. Football has begune,
- 25:43Speaker 2: what'd your kid do sixteenth birthday?
- 25:45Speaker 3: You said sixteenth birthday? You know he's he really just
- 25:50Speaker 3: wanted family over. So we had family over. We swam
- 25:53Speaker 3: in the pool, We had pizzas and sandwiches, and you know,
- 25:56Speaker 3: I dunked his ass in the pool and drowns a
- 25:58Speaker 3: few times with all my boys and nephews. That's what
- 26:01Speaker 3: I am. I'm that uncle and that dad. I beat
- 26:05Speaker 3: the crap out of all the kids, and they love
- 26:06Speaker 3: it and they come back for more.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Right, you have to live up to your reputation.
- 26:11Speaker 2: Right, We're going to Simson's house and Chris is like
- 26:13Speaker 2: one of the kids, so you have to.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Act right exactly. In fact, it's like I'm not even
- 26:17Speaker 3: allowed to leave because my wife will be like where
- 26:19Speaker 3: are you going? Like She'll be like, you're the entertainment.
- 26:24Speaker 1: I clown this year, And I was like, wait, I
- 26:26Speaker 1: was gonna.
- 26:26Speaker 3: Go pick up the food. We know you be the
- 26:28Speaker 3: big dumb circus animal. Get in the pool.
- 26:30Speaker 2: She knows, though, you need to take a drive every
- 26:32Speaker 2: now and again, you know, right now, hey, I'll get
- 26:34Speaker 2: the pizza, honey.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly right, he'll smokey mummy anyway.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Check hi out PFT with Mike Florio every day on
- 26:42Speaker 2: Peacock The Unbuttoned Podcast. I almostaid Football Night in America,
- 26:45Speaker 2: but I can't say that anymore.
- 26:46Speaker 3: I can't say from.
- 26:48Speaker 1: That Tomlin did. He did a good job, Tomlin.
- 26:52Speaker 3: Tomlin's made for it. He's the man, as I've always said,
- 26:55Speaker 3: and back from my days when he was the secondary
- 26:58Speaker 3: coach in Tampa Bay when I was there's quarterback. He's
- 27:01Speaker 3: the greatest communicator I've ever seen out of any coach
- 27:04Speaker 3: I've ever been around. Great, the energy, the way he
- 27:06Speaker 3: can relate to players is second to none.
- 27:09Speaker 1: All right, get out of here, man. We appreciate it
- 27:12Speaker 1: as always.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Check him out PFT with Flori every day on Peacock
- 27:15Speaker 2: the Unbuttoned Podcast as well. I hope your buddy Shanahan's
- 27:18Speaker 2: doing okay. I know that was a tense Those were
- 27:20Speaker 2: the tense of moments for you. Right, it's one of
- 27:22Speaker 2: your best friends.
- 27:23Speaker 3: What that was? It is crazy? I mean yeah, I
- 27:25Speaker 3: mean I was worried about my best friend for a while.
- 27:29Speaker 3: I mean when he facetimed me and I got pictures
- 27:32Speaker 3: of what he looked like, and then he facetimed me
- 27:34Speaker 3: later that day and yeah, we were worried, as our
