- 0:00Podcasthero.com Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed
- 0:06to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:09I'm your host, Andrew McGivern for October 2nd.
- 0:13Today is World Farm Animals Day, an international observance that
- 0:17holds deep significance beyond its simple title.
- 0:21This day has been commemorated since 1983 when it was
- 0:24established by the Farm Animal Reform movement.
- 0:27The date was specifically chosen to honor Mahatma Gandhi, who was
- 0:31born on October 2nd, 1869, and who advocated throughout his
- 0:36life for non violence and compassion toward all living
- 0:40beings. World Farm Animals Day seeks to
- 0:43raise awareness about the Treatment of Animals raised for
- 0:46food and to encourage more sustainable and compassionate
- 0:50food systems. It's observed as a day of
- 0:53mourning and remembrance for the billions of farm animals
- 0:57worldwide, while also promoting reflection on our relationship
- 1:01with the animals that sustain us.
- 1:04What makes this day particularly meaningful is that it coincides
- 1:07with the International Day of Nonviolence, creating a powerful
- 1:11connection between Gandhi's philosophy of ahisma, non harm
- 1:16to all living things, and our modern choices about how we
- 1:20treat animals on our planet. Today's quote comes from Mahatma
- 1:25Gandhi himself. The greatness of the nation and
- 1:27its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are
- 1:31treated. Gandhi's observation cut to the
- 1:34heart of what World Farm Animals Day asks us to consider.
- 1:39He's suggesting that how we treat the most vulnerable
- 1:41creatures among us, those who cannot speak for themselves or
- 1:45defend their own interests. It reveals something fundamental
- 1:49about her character, both individually and collectively.
- 1:54Think about the deeper wisdom in his words.
- 1:57It's relatively easy to treat well those who can reciprocate,
- 2:01who have power, who can reward or punish us.
- 2:06But how we treat beings who are completely at our mercy, who
- 2:11depend entirely on our compassion, that reveals our
- 2:14true moral character. Gandhi understood that
- 2:17compassion is not divisible. We can't be genuinely
- 2:21compassionate in some areas of life while being indifferent to
- 2:25suffering in others. The capacity for empathy, for
- 2:28considering the welfare of others, for recognizing that our
- 2:32choices have consequences beyond ourselves.
- 2:36These qualities either exist in US or they don't.
- 2:41World Farm Animals Day doesn't demand that everyone become
- 2:43vegetarian or vegan, but it does ask us to be mindful, to
- 2:48acknowledge the lives that sustain ours, and to consider
- 2:51whether we can make choices that reduce suffering and promote
- 2:54more ethical treatment of farm animals.
- 2:58So as you head into your day, think about Gandhi's wisdom and
- 3:02what World Farm Animals Day asks us to consider.
- 3:05You don't have to make dramatic changes to honor this day's
- 3:08message. Small shifts in awareness and be
- 3:11powerful. Maybe it's learning more about
- 3:14where your food comes from. Maybe it's choosing to support
- 3:17farms that treat their animals more humanely, even if it costs
- 3:22a bit more. Maybe it's simply taking a
- 3:24moment before a meal to acknowledge with gratitude the
- 3:28lives, plant or animal, that sustain your own, Kind of like
- 3:33in the movie Avatar. The point isn't perfection or
- 3:38judgement, but mindfulness. When we're more conscious of our
- 3:42food choices and their consequences, we naturally move
- 3:45toward greater compassion. I eat meat and we try to eat
- 3:50good quality meat from local butcher shops.
- 3:52But it would be good to know more about how the animals are
- 3:56treated while they are raised and how they are butchered.
- 4:00More transparency in the meat industry would be appreciated.
- 4:04And I guess that is what this day is all about.
- 4:08That's going to do it For today. I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off
- 4:11for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 4:19Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
