Transcript
- 0:00Welcome back to Spy Trader , the podcast that navigates market madness one headline at a time .
- 0:06I'm your host , Kip Tock , and it's 6 am on Tuesday , October 14th , 2025 , Pacific time .
- 0:14If you felt whiplash yesterday , hold tight because the market has officially reversed course .
- 0:20Monday's relief rally is completely unwinding , thanks to a fierce return of the riskoff sentiment .
- 0:27Futures indicate the S&P 500 ETF , SPY , is down nearly 0.9% , and the techheavy Nasdaq , QQQ , is leading the plunge , down about 1.2% .
- 0:40The Fear Gauge , the VIX , which plunged 12% yesterday , is likely spiking back up today as uncertainty reigns supreme .
- 0:49The reason for this instant reversal is a full reescalation of the U.S.China trade conflict .
- 0:56After Monday's temporary easing of rhetoric , China has retaliated by sanctioning U.S.linked shipbuilding units and imposing new port fees .
- 1:05This geopolitical instability is creating an incredibly challenging environment for traders .
- 1:11Adding to the anxiety is the ongoing U.S.
- 1:14government shutdown , which has delayed critical economic data , including the September CPI inflation report and the September jobs report .
- 1:25This data blackout leaves the Federal Reserve operating blind ahead of Chair Powell’s upcoming speeches , making investors even more nervous .
- 1:33In times like these , where does the capital go ?
- 1:36Safety .
- 1:37We are seeing a massive flight to safe havens , driving Gold to extend its recordbreaking rally , climbing above 4,100 per ounce , and Silver also hitting a record high above 52.50 .
- 1:52This tells you that investor apprehension is extremely high .
- 1:56Looking at sector performance , it's a classic Tech selloff .
- 2:00Technology stocks , represented by the XLK ETF , which led Monday’s rally , are now leading the drop , down close to three percent in premarket .
- 2:10Companies like Broadcom and Nvidia , which are highly exposed to global supply chains , are vulnerable .
- 2:17For example , Broadcom surged nearly 10% yesterday on AI news but is now facing immediate selling pressure .
- 2:25Meanwhile , the Energy sector , XLE , is struggling as oil prices have dropped about two percent on worries that renewed trade tensions will hammer global demand .
- 2:35The macro backdrop remains complex : inflation is sticky , with Core PCE near 2.9% , and while a December rate cut is still broadly expected , the new tariffs are adding fresh inflationary risks .
- 2:48Given this extreme volatility — whiplash driven by headlines , not fundamentals — we are recommending a barbell approach .
- 2:57First , maintain core growth exposure .
- 3:00Despite the daily chop , the secular trend toward AI and technology remains the strongest longterm driver .
- 3:07Use these dips as opportunities to maintain holdings in the Invesco QQQ Trust or the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLK .
- 3:17Second , you must increase your defensive hedges .
- 3:21This reescalation of the trade war , combined with the government shutdown , demands a riskoff posture .
- 3:28The most direct hedge is the iShares 20 Year Treasury Bond ETF , TLT , which benefits when investors seek safety and push bond prices up , or SPDR Gold Shares , GLD , which is already hitting record highs .
- 3:43Third , focus on quality and stability .
- 3:47In this choppy market , look for ETFs with lowbeta companies that provide capital preservation .
- 3:53Consider the Schwab U.S.
- 3:55Dividend Equity ETF , SCHD , or defensive sector funds like the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLV , to weather the daily storms .
- 4:07Stay agile and safe out there , traders .
- 4:10We'll be back in a few hours with the next update .
