- 0:00Speaker 1: The views and opinions expressed on this program do not
- 0:02Speaker 1: necessarily reflect the views and opinions of five adwchs it's
- 0:06Speaker 1: employees or WVRC Media.
- 0:20Speaker 2: It is well, it's now twenty five minutes past the hour.
- 0:23Speaker 2: We had a little bit of a delay there from
- 0:25Speaker 2: our National Weather Service. Yes there's some weather moving through
- 0:27Speaker 2: the area as if you're not aware, But thanks for
- 0:30Speaker 2: tuning in on this Tuesday morning. I'm del Cooper. This
- 0:33Speaker 2: is asked the expert, and welcoming back into the studio.
- 0:36Speaker 2: I think after a month off, if I'm not mistaken,
- 0:38Speaker 2: we have Garib Dental Group represented here this morning, Doctor
- 0:41Speaker 2: Stephen and doctor Carson is with us this morning. Doctor Stephen,
- 0:43Speaker 2: how you doing this morning?
- 0:44Speaker 3: Doing very well?
- 0:45Speaker 2: Bye?
- 0:45Speaker 3: How by yourself?
- 0:46Speaker 2: I'm doing very well too. Thanks for coming in this morning.
- 0:48Speaker 2: It's been a while since we spoke, so looking forward
- 0:50Speaker 2: to having you in. Somebody came in by themselves even
- 0:52Speaker 2: the time before that was that that was you Doctor Stephen?
- 0:55Speaker 4: Right?
- 0:55Speaker 2: Is this the first time that we've seen doctor Carson
- 0:57Speaker 2: in a while, or was that doctor Carson? May it
- 0:58Speaker 2: was the other way around, doctor Carr. Okay, So while
- 1:00Speaker 2: we since we've seen you I was that Forgettabout doctor
- 1:04Speaker 2: Carson Henley with us as well this morning.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Yeah, it was reportedly the best radio program ever.
- 1:08Speaker 2: That's right now. I remember that now, I remember, that's right. Yeah,
- 1:11Speaker 2: that's right now. I remember.
- 1:13Speaker 4: I think I did text Steve and I was like, dude,
- 1:14Speaker 4: probably the best ever.
- 1:15Speaker 2: I do remember that now, that's right. And how are
- 1:17Speaker 2: you doing this morning, doctor Henley?
- 1:19Speaker 4: Fantastic. A little wet, but fantastic.
- 1:21Speaker 2: It is a little wet out there. If you have
- 1:22Speaker 2: an umbrella that you keep out the door before you
- 1:25Speaker 2: leave this morning, or I put on a rain jacket.
- 1:28Speaker 2: I always hate putting on a jacket when it's like
- 1:29Speaker 2: eighty degrees outside, But you don't want to get wet, right,
- 1:32Speaker 2: so you put on a brain jacket, whatever you need
- 1:34Speaker 2: to do, because at least the last eye check that
- 1:36Speaker 2: this studio is pretty insulated. Now that the last ete
- 1:38Speaker 2: check that was still raining, pretty good out there. And
- 1:40Speaker 2: we're going to talk about as you might have a guests,
- 1:43Speaker 2: We're going to talk about dental hygiene this morning, and
- 1:46Speaker 2: anything that has to do with the health of your
- 1:48Speaker 2: mouth and teeth and gums and things along those lines.
- 1:51Speaker 2: We have some topics that we're going to tackle this morning,
- 1:53Speaker 2: but if you want to weigh in on anything that's
- 1:56Speaker 2: that you would like to dress or maybe that if
- 1:57Speaker 2: a loved one or a child, you can give us
- 1:59Speaker 2: a call this morning. These are A four three four
- 2:00Speaker 2: five fifty eight fifty eight. Threes are four three, four
- 2:02Speaker 2: five fifty eight fifty eight. You can also text. Threes
- 2:04Speaker 2: are four non three five five zero year eight. Threes
- 2:06Speaker 2: are A four nine three five five zero year eight
- 2:09Speaker 2: is our text line number. I guess first thing before
- 2:11Speaker 2: we dump in, just jump in everything. How you guys doing.
- 2:13Speaker 2: It's been a little while since we've talked to you
- 2:15Speaker 2: all the way, No, doing.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Well, doing well.
- 2:16Speaker 5: We're trying to navigate the summer. You know, it's a
- 2:19Speaker 5: it's a strange time with different people having different vacations
- 2:24Speaker 5: and schedules to do. Kids have, you know, so many
- 2:27Speaker 5: activities you think, you know during the summer. Sometimes oh well,
- 2:32Speaker 5: you know, what are these kids going to do?
- 2:33Speaker 2: All?
- 2:33Speaker 3: They're in everything?
- 2:35Speaker 5: You know, so you have we have more things to
- 2:37Speaker 5: get them to and and to organize. So so navigating
- 2:41Speaker 5: all of that but enjoying it. How about you?
- 2:43Speaker 2: No, Yeah, everything. This is always a big time of
- 2:46Speaker 2: year for in the radio, and it's it's interesting here
- 2:48Speaker 2: because we're kind of in between sports. So we still
- 2:50Speaker 2: have baseball that's every day, but we have football that's
- 2:53Speaker 2: right around the corner, literally just a couple of weeks away.
- 2:55Speaker 2: So it's it's kind of the big breath that we
- 2:56Speaker 2: have before before we go in and do that. And
- 2:59Speaker 2: then my kid is working on uh animation. She's big
- 3:04Speaker 2: an animation now, so that's we got her like a
- 3:06Speaker 2: little app that she can use to make like stop
- 3:08Speaker 2: motion animation and she can do some drawing and stuff.
- 3:11Speaker 2: She's getting really good at it. She's getting really good
- 3:12Speaker 2: at it. It's not too bad, not too bad at all.
- 3:14Speaker 2: How about you, doctor, doctor Henley, having a good summer
- 3:16Speaker 2: so far. I'm just fascinated by this. Mic, I just
- 3:19Speaker 2: can't I'm just anyway, okay, moving on just as cradle
- 3:22Speaker 2: or cool, Mic, I just want to call out how
- 3:25Speaker 2: technologically advanced this is someone that you know prides ourselves.
- 3:29Speaker 4: I'm going to give you some kudos. Dale, fantastic job. Anyway,
- 3:31Speaker 4: this summer is doing doing really well. I do want
- 3:33Speaker 4: to shout out my wife. It's our anniversary today. I
- 3:37Speaker 4: actually woke up and she and she wak situations. Oh thanks,
- 3:41Speaker 4: we woke up and she goes, happy anniversary, and I go, oh, oh, yeah,
- 3:45Speaker 4: you're right.
- 3:46Speaker 2: It's not something like the week's prior.
- 3:48Speaker 4: You plan for it, but then the day if you
- 3:49Speaker 4: wake up, you're like, you don't, you don't, I know
- 3:52Speaker 4: what you mean?
- 3:53Speaker 2: Right, right? That was a cool thing.
- 3:55Speaker 4: And also my kids are in another state at the moment,
- 3:58Speaker 4: so it's a it's a blessing and a curse because
- 4:01Speaker 4: we miss them. We definitely miss them, but they're enjoying
- 4:03Speaker 4: time with family out in another state. So that is
- 4:07Speaker 4: it was planned. It's not like we kicked them out,
- 4:09Speaker 4: So don't worry.
- 4:11Speaker 2: That's that's good. Yeah, that's good. So you can give
- 4:14Speaker 2: us a call this morning. You can follow along one
- 4:15Speaker 2: line as well, or in line. It's Grebdentalgroup dot com.
- 4:18Speaker 2: GREEB Dental Dental Group dot com, g H A R
- 4:20Speaker 2: e B GREEB Dentalgroup dot com. If you want to
- 4:22Speaker 2: find out more information, a great website that will point
- 4:24Speaker 2: you to the closest location to you, let you know
- 4:26Speaker 2: about some of the services and so forth from GREEB
- 4:28Speaker 2: Dental Group. So you can head on over to the
- 4:31Speaker 2: website and we encourage that we have several topics we
- 4:33Speaker 2: want to tackle this morning. And I really like the
- 4:37Speaker 2: breakdown that you sent because there's a lot of things
- 4:39Speaker 2: in here that we're going to be addressing that sort
- 4:41Speaker 2: of maybe misconceptions that people think about about their mouth
- 4:44Speaker 2: and their and their teeth health and things like that.
- 4:46Speaker 2: And the first one you sent me, I thought was
- 4:48Speaker 2: a really good one. If my teeth don't hurt, that
- 4:50Speaker 2: means that they're healthy. And there's all kinds of like
- 4:53Speaker 2: silent I hate, not silent killers, but silent assassins behind
- 4:58Speaker 2: the scenes working on your mouth. That word assassins.
- 5:01Speaker 4: What type of assassins, doctor Steeven, hurt in your mouth
- 5:03Speaker 4: waiting to slaughter your teeth?
- 5:05Speaker 3: That's great.
- 5:06Speaker 5: Well, the classic thing is that patients come in and
- 5:10Speaker 5: they think, oh, you know, everything's fine, haven't been to
- 5:13Speaker 5: the dentist for a while, but nothing's bothering me, so
- 5:15Speaker 5: you might as well just get them checked out. And
- 5:17Speaker 5: then sometimes we have to tell them, you know, it
- 5:20Speaker 5: has been a while and during this time you've developed
- 5:24Speaker 5: three or four cavities, let's say, And some patients are
- 5:28Speaker 5: very shocked by that because well, nothing hurts, How can
- 5:30Speaker 5: I have any cavities. And that's the strange thing about
- 5:33Speaker 5: teeth is that once a tooth starts hurting, many times
- 5:39Speaker 5: the reason it's hurting is because the nerve inside of
- 5:42Speaker 5: the tooth is irritated somehow. And once that nerve becomes irritated,
- 5:46Speaker 5: sometimes it means you have a good sized cavity, very
- 5:50Speaker 5: large cavity at that point. Many times it means at
- 5:52Speaker 5: this point it has gotten so large that you need
- 5:54Speaker 5: to have a root canal, which people want to try
- 5:57Speaker 5: to avoid and can be very shocked whenever that happened.
- 6:00Speaker 5: Even there are even times when patient's teeth are so
- 6:04Speaker 5: decayed in between the teeth and you can't see it
- 6:07Speaker 5: very well that they have a large infection from an
- 6:12Speaker 5: irritated nerve that has gone all the way and died
- 6:16Speaker 5: and has suddenly an infected kind of pocket around it.
- 6:21Speaker 5: And people are very shocked at that this has never
- 6:23Speaker 5: hurt me. Why is why is this? How can this happen?
- 6:25Speaker 5: You know, how can this be? And then you know,
- 6:27Speaker 5: you review the X rays with them say you know,
- 6:29Speaker 5: it can be a silent assassins.
- 6:32Speaker 3: As Dale was saying, they can.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Slowly creep up and our body has an amazing way
- 6:36Speaker 5: of balancing things out and regulating to relieve these types
- 6:41Speaker 5: of of infections sometimes unbeknownst to us, so we can
- 6:46Speaker 5: be the bearer of bad news in that in that case,
- 6:48Speaker 5: and again that that highlights why you should see your
- 6:51Speaker 5: dentist regularly so we can stay on top of these
- 6:53Speaker 5: things exactly.
- 6:55Speaker 4: The regular visits are important to catch those things small, right, exactly,
- 6:59Speaker 4: because small things can become big. Do they always become big?
- 7:01Speaker 6: No?
- 7:01Speaker 4: But usually something small does become big.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:04Speaker 4: A flat tire can destroy your rim, right, you might
- 7:07Speaker 4: as well fill up the tire then get it fixed,
- 7:09Speaker 4: as opposed to replacing a rim, which is three four
- 7:11Speaker 4: times the cost.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Same thing.
- 7:12Speaker 4: With teeth, feelings are a lot less expensive, a lot
- 7:15Speaker 4: less invasive than new canals or extractions, et cetera. Now,
- 7:18Speaker 4: I think you said something very interesting. You said there
- 7:21Speaker 4: could be like a pocket of infection, correct, and the
- 7:24Speaker 4: patient still doesn't feel pain. When they ask me, why
- 7:27Speaker 4: am I not in pain? Sometimes I go, I don't know,
- 7:31Speaker 4: you should be, that's a great question. Yeah, but for
- 7:34Speaker 4: some reason, you just have this area, this pocket of
- 7:37Speaker 4: localized infection, right around the end of the root of
- 7:41Speaker 4: this tooth, and for some reason, you're not in pain,
- 7:43Speaker 4: or I'll sometimes phrase it like do you remember ever
- 7:46Speaker 4: being in discomfort? Or like do you remember like a
- 7:47Speaker 4: season in your life in the last few months this
- 7:50Speaker 4: air of your mouth was like bothering you were sensitive
- 7:52Speaker 4: And they go, yeah, I remember. I let me pull
- 7:54Speaker 4: up that text I sent my wife or my husband right,
- 7:56Speaker 4: and they go, I think it was hurting you. It's like, well,
- 7:58Speaker 4: that was it dying now now the tooth is dead,
- 8:01Speaker 4: so that there is more digging we end up getting
- 8:03Speaker 4: into and we can actually kind of figure out, oh,
- 8:06Speaker 4: this is actually more serious than just you know, an affection.
- 8:09Speaker 4: It could be in a cross tooth or a dead tooth,
- 8:11Speaker 4: which is can be a little more serious. So there's
- 8:14Speaker 4: a lot of digging we have to do, and it's
- 8:16Speaker 4: kind of fun to figure out this have have this
- 8:19Speaker 4: co discovery with the patients at times.
- 8:21Speaker 2: And concerning the root word and the cross tooth just
- 8:23Speaker 2: sounds pretty bad.
- 8:27Speaker 4: It does sound bade right, that's it's not that okay,
- 8:30Speaker 4: everyone out there's not it's not the not the other world.
- 8:33Speaker 2: And it's just it's just the terminology. It kind of
- 8:35Speaker 2: struck me because I haven't heard it referred to like
- 8:37Speaker 2: that but it makes sense. I understand exactly what you're saying.
- 8:39Speaker 2: It's just something kind of halloweeny about it. Not yet.
- 8:43Speaker 2: We have two more months. Yeah, we're getting there. Hey,
- 8:46Speaker 2: that's that.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Stuff's already out in the stores. It's crazy.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Oh yeah, what is with that? But that's that's a
- 8:54Speaker 2: different thing. We we can't even we can't we can't
- 8:57Speaker 2: enjoy what we have now because we have to be
- 8:58Speaker 2: looking at the holiday that's a months away. I don't
- 9:00Speaker 2: know what the deal with.
- 9:01Speaker 4: Yeah, we are redoing our operatories right now, like doing
- 9:04Speaker 4: new cabinets, like one at a time over the next
- 9:06Speaker 4: few weeks. So so my staff were like, you need
- 9:09Speaker 4: to go buy totes, doctor Henley. I'm like, okay, I'll
- 9:12Speaker 4: go buy some tots. So Las night, I bought totes
- 9:14Speaker 4: at Low's and they had that huge head that goes
- 9:17Speaker 4: up and down, like is this like twenty foot tall monster?
- 9:20Speaker 4: And like the head moves and I'm like, ah, okay,
- 9:23Speaker 4: all right, it is Halloween.
- 9:24Speaker 2: I was scared just watching it. The thing that that
- 9:27Speaker 2: that is crazy about those one of the ones that
- 9:28Speaker 2: they sell you look like I look at them anyway,
- 9:31Speaker 2: and it's like, my goodness, those things are immense and
- 9:33Speaker 2: they're huge. They must cost the fort and then you
- 9:34Speaker 2: look at me, You're like, they're not even really that
- 9:36Speaker 2: expense twenty nine ninety nine. What everybody have one? Everybody
- 9:40Speaker 2: should have one in their yard. Let's make all the
- 9:42Speaker 2: Hoa's happy everywhere across across the world. A great dental
- 9:46Speaker 2: group and studio with us this morning. We're not talking
- 9:48Speaker 2: about Halloween, not yet anyway, although that's that's how Sionda's
- 9:51Speaker 2: for Dennis. We'll get to the head a little bit
- 9:53Speaker 2: later on. Threes are of four, three, four, five, fifty
- 9:56Speaker 2: eight fifty eight is our number. Threes are a four three, four, five,
- 9:58Speaker 2: fifty eight fifty eight is a number of the you
- 10:00Speaker 2: can call. So it's not normal if your teeth hurt
- 10:03Speaker 2: first and foremost, if you have some problems. You know,
- 10:06Speaker 2: I heard things when I was a kid, like your
- 10:09Speaker 2: mouth is just a little crowded, or you know whatever
- 10:11Speaker 2: it might be. Well, those things might be true. But
- 10:12Speaker 2: even if you just have like some low grade pain
- 10:15Speaker 2: all the time, or you feel like your mouth is
- 10:16Speaker 2: to go, even those things, it might mean that if
- 10:19Speaker 2: you haven't been to the dentist, you might be a
- 10:20Speaker 2: good chance to go check it out and see what's
- 10:22Speaker 2: going on.
- 10:22Speaker 3: That's a good sign, that's right. Yeah.
- 10:24Speaker 5: I mean, in fact, even if you just need a
- 10:26Speaker 5: good cleaning can be the remedy for generalized sensitivity or
- 10:31Speaker 5: gum discomfort. Some patients come, I'm not sure what it is,
- 10:34Speaker 5: but this area has been bothering me, and we looking like, well,
- 10:37Speaker 5: it's been a while since you're cleaning. So now you
- 10:39Speaker 5: have all this build up underneath your gums that are
- 10:42Speaker 5: triggering this inflammation and discomfort that you're having, and we
- 10:45Speaker 5: have a cleaning and.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Takes care of it.
- 10:47Speaker 4: And on that note, doctor Steven questioned for you, is
- 10:51Speaker 4: it good when gums bleeded? And on top of that,
- 10:54Speaker 4: whenever a patient's like, well I wasn't bleeding so well,
- 10:58Speaker 4: I wasn't bleeding necessarily before, but now I really want
- 11:00Speaker 4: to I want to make sure I do a good job,
- 11:02Speaker 4: and then I only do a good job until it
- 11:04Speaker 4: starts bleeding.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Like is that maybe too much?
- 11:07Speaker 5: So very a few different responses to that, but yes,
- 11:11Speaker 5: So if you think of your gums, many people listening
- 11:15Speaker 5: now think, oh, yeah, they bleed all the time. I'm sure,
- 11:18Speaker 5: Well where else on your body if you touch it
- 11:21Speaker 5: and it bleeds, is that okay.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Mmm, nowhere, I don't think it's kind of.
- 11:28Speaker 3: A warning sign.
- 11:28Speaker 5: You know, sure have some bleeding, right, So if your
- 11:31Speaker 5: gums are bleeding regularly, then something is wrong, and that's
- 11:35Speaker 5: typically there's plaque and bacteria living up underneath the gums
- 11:40Speaker 5: causing this inflammation, and it's it's kind of like an
- 11:43Speaker 5: irritated hangnail. You know that it can be sore, it
- 11:46Speaker 5: can it can bleed and cause a problem because also
- 11:49Speaker 5: in your in your mouth, as everyone knows, there's tons
- 11:53Speaker 5: and tons of bacteria that can enter your bloodstream that way.
- 11:56Speaker 5: So if you have a bleeding, open bleeding wound in
- 11:58Speaker 5: a sense in your mouth, it's really not a good thing.
- 12:01Speaker 5: So what again, the most common remedy for is a
- 12:05Speaker 5: good cleaning. Now it might be what we call a
- 12:07Speaker 5: deeper cleaning that could take a couple of appointments and
- 12:11Speaker 5: take a little more time and anesthesia and whatnot, or
- 12:15Speaker 5: it could be a routine cleaning that you need to
- 12:17Speaker 5: have done that's causing That would be the solution to
- 12:21Speaker 5: that problem. But yeah, if th your gums are bleeding,
- 12:25Speaker 5: of course it's an issue we want to take care of.
- 12:27Speaker 5: But then sometimes patients say, you know, I haven't had
- 12:31Speaker 5: any trouble. I keep my teeth really clean, and my
- 12:35Speaker 5: gums started bleeding, so I stopped brushing that area because
- 12:38Speaker 5: I was worried about a bleeding. Well, that just compounds
- 12:40Speaker 5: the problem too, because then more bacteria, more plaque, more calculus,
- 12:45Speaker 5: and tartar are going to live underneath there. So definitely
- 12:50Speaker 5: take that as a warning sign. And it is not
- 12:52Speaker 5: normal for gums.
- 12:53Speaker 2: To bleed, so there is no normal level. Then it's
- 12:56Speaker 2: like they're just bleeding a little bit, or are they
- 12:57Speaker 2: only bleed every once in a while, Like any bleeding
- 13:00Speaker 2: is bad bleeding.
- 13:00Speaker 3: It's it's not good.
- 13:02Speaker 5: And I've been there myself, like noticing when I floss
- 13:05Speaker 5: all these areas or bleeding, some I skip a day
- 13:08Speaker 5: or two of flossing, so I need to ramp that up.
- 13:10Speaker 3: And then many times if you do.
- 13:11Speaker 5: Proper brushing and flossing, then you can remedy that the
- 13:15Speaker 5: very kind of minor areas that have those problems. But
- 13:20Speaker 5: if it's generalized bleeding, definitely definitely a concern that your
- 13:24Speaker 5: dentist needs to help you with.
- 13:25Speaker 2: I think we have a caller that's called in this
- 13:27Speaker 2: morning that has questions for the doctors good morning. What's
- 13:31Speaker 2: your first name? Or you can hang up. That's okay
- 13:34Speaker 2: as well if you like to back, if you like
- 13:36Speaker 2: to call back, or maybe I jumped the gun there
- 13:38Speaker 2: a little bit. You can give us a call back.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Three zeror a four three four five fifty eight fifty eight.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Threes are four three four five fifty eight fifty eight.
- 13:43Speaker 2: You can text threes are four non three five five
- 13:45Speaker 2: zero zero eight three es aerre four non three five
- 13:47Speaker 2: five zeros eror eight is the text line number that
- 13:49Speaker 2: you can get in on talking this morning about the
- 13:52Speaker 2: important things when it comes to your dental hygiene and
- 13:55Speaker 2: some maybe misconceptions that you have some things that maybe
- 13:58Speaker 2: you shrug off a little bit, and let's face it,
- 14:01Speaker 2: a lot of these things that we're talking about this morning,
- 14:02Speaker 2: or things that maybe we negotiate with ourselves, you know
- 14:05Speaker 2: that we're like, yeah, a little bit of blood on
- 14:06Speaker 2: the gums. It wasn't as bad this morning as yesterday,
- 14:10Speaker 2: so that probably means it's getting a little better. You know,
- 14:12Speaker 2: we negotiate these things with ourselves all the time, and
- 14:15Speaker 2: that's not necessarily a good thing, that's right. So these
- 14:17Speaker 2: are things that we have to address and that you
- 14:19Speaker 2: if you have any questions about, You're more than welcome
- 14:21Speaker 2: to give us a call about and the doctors can
- 14:25Speaker 2: try to answer your questions. As far as that goes.
- 14:27Speaker 2: We'll take a break here in just a moment. But
- 14:29Speaker 2: because this, I have a kid that's about eight years old.
- 14:32Speaker 2: So this isn't quite baby teeth, baby teeth, Tom, but
- 14:35Speaker 2: this is something that we talked about a little bit
- 14:37Speaker 2: with my child. Baby teeth. Don't matter who cares what
- 14:40Speaker 2: happens to those things. We're going to lose them anyway.
- 14:42Speaker 3: Oh mind, Yes, that's to an extent.
- 14:44Speaker 4: There is some truths in that, because they will fall out, right,
- 14:47Speaker 4: And so we have this discussion with parents all the time.
- 14:52Speaker 4: And if there's a baby tooth that is, let's say,
- 14:55Speaker 4: has a cavity on it or has some infection on it,
- 14:58Speaker 4: and they say, well, it's going to come out anyway,
- 15:00Speaker 4: and I go, well, it's not going to come.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Out for years.
- 15:02Speaker 4: And let's talk through what will happen if we do
- 15:04Speaker 4: remove that tooth, as opposed to fixing that tooth before
- 15:07Speaker 4: that tooth is naturally supposed to exfoliate or be removed
- 15:10Speaker 4: on its own. I love using big words big words
- 15:13Speaker 4: here anyway, So what happens whenever you have a cavity
- 15:17Speaker 4: in a baby tooth before that baby tooth is supposed
- 15:19Speaker 4: to fall out on its own, it is wise to
- 15:22Speaker 4: get that thing fixed. It is wise to fix that
- 15:26Speaker 4: tooth so that you can maintain the space, because if
- 15:28Speaker 4: you don't maintain that space, the adult tooth will come
- 15:31Speaker 4: in without the adequate space to produce an adequate smile.
- 15:35Speaker 4: And now what does that mean. Well, if their smile
- 15:38Speaker 4: is not if your smile doesn't have the teeth in
- 15:41Speaker 4: the right way, if they're crooked. It's not just about aesthetics.
- 15:44Speaker 4: I mean there's some partial partiality to that. I mean,
- 15:47Speaker 4: the way we look is important, but it's for the
- 15:50Speaker 4: gum health. It's the way that your gums can clean themselves,
- 15:53Speaker 4: or how you can fass, how you can brush. It's
- 15:56Speaker 4: for the way that the teeth won't have will have
- 15:58Speaker 4: lower fracture risk if they come in. So setting up
- 16:01Speaker 4: your children for success, keeping those baby teeth there as
- 16:04Speaker 4: long as they can until they naturally need to come out.
- 16:07Speaker 4: When the adult teeth are prepared to come through and erupt.
- 16:10Speaker 4: It is important to keep that keep those baby teeth
- 16:12Speaker 4: in place so the adult teeth come into the proper place.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Now here's the caveat to that. No matter what, both
- 16:18Speaker 4: of my kids we're gonna have crooked teeth, regardless of
- 16:21Speaker 4: what we did. And so that's why we talk to
- 16:24Speaker 4: our orthodontis friends and we say hello, doctor so and so,
- 16:28Speaker 4: we need help here. Regardless of how much room that
- 16:31Speaker 4: we're maintaining with our baby teeth, sometimes there's some crowding
- 16:34Speaker 4: there due to the skeletal aspect of how we were developed.
- 16:38Speaker 4: And so even though we do our best job, we
- 16:40Speaker 4: do our best job keeping these baby teeth. Still we
- 16:42Speaker 4: might need braces. It doesn't matter, oh sure, but it
- 16:45Speaker 4: is important to maintain there, to maintain your teeth for
- 16:48Speaker 4: multiple reasons, especially those baby teeth. Doctor Steve anything Dad,
- 16:51Speaker 4: before we go to.
- 16:51Speaker 5: Break well, I would say that if we think about
- 16:55Speaker 5: it on a kind of a pullback and a global perspective,
- 16:58Speaker 5: baby teeth are smaller than the adult teeth, right, So,
- 17:00Speaker 5: if your child has baby teeth perfectly aligned and your
- 17:04Speaker 5: adult teeth need to come in underneath those, there's not
- 17:09Speaker 5: room if they're perfectly you know, touching one another, right,
- 17:13Speaker 5: because the adult teeth are naturally bigger than the baby
- 17:15Speaker 5: teeth so really spacing is pretty good a preferable thing
- 17:20Speaker 5: in a child's mouth, and that highlights the importance of
- 17:25Speaker 5: keeping those spaces because you need to have that room
- 17:28Speaker 5: for that larger tooth to come in. If that space
- 17:30Speaker 5: is not there, then, as doctor Henley said, things come
- 17:33Speaker 5: in misaligned and basically crooked and need to be addressed.
- 17:37Speaker 5: But we can do multiple interventions prior to losing all
- 17:42Speaker 5: of those baby teeth with our orthodontists, by guiding the
- 17:45Speaker 5: jaws to grow a little bit bigger, moving those baby
- 17:48Speaker 5: teeth a little bit, or the adult teeth as they
- 17:50Speaker 5: come in so they do have the right space. But
- 17:53Speaker 5: I mean, I've had conversations with physicians where they're like, well,
- 17:56Speaker 5: the thought is, you know, baby teeth, we're going to
- 17:58Speaker 5: lose them anyway, so it doesn't really matter, right. Nope, No,
- 18:00Speaker 5: that's not actually the case. We do want to hold
- 18:03Speaker 5: onto those for the child's long term benefit.
- 18:06Speaker 2: What's it do with shark teeth on kids? My kid
- 18:08Speaker 2: had double rows of teeth before she lost the front ones,
- 18:12Speaker 2: and it happened regularly at first, like most of her
- 18:14Speaker 2: teeth came in double at first, and then she finally
- 18:16Speaker 2: lost them.
- 18:17Speaker 5: Yeah, that's pretty crazy. Patient parents bring their children and
- 18:20Speaker 5: my kid looked like the shark.
- 18:21Speaker 3: What's going on? Yeah, and it happens.
- 18:23Speaker 5: What happens is that the tooth underneath it puts pressure
- 18:28Speaker 5: on the root of the baby tooth, and sometimes that
- 18:30Speaker 5: pressure is not uniformly straight up and down. Sometimes it
- 18:34Speaker 5: pushes toward the lip or toward the tongue. And then
- 18:37Speaker 5: many times what happens is the adult teeth kind of
- 18:39Speaker 5: slipped behind the baby tooth and then it actually irrupts
- 18:43Speaker 5: with that baby tooth in front of it still because
- 18:45Speaker 5: it has not put the proper pressure on the root
- 18:48Speaker 5: to have that root resorb or go away to become loose.
- 18:52Speaker 5: So then you have them actually kind of wedged together
- 18:55Speaker 5: and you have to have that baby tooth removed, and
- 18:58Speaker 5: then the adult tooth quickly comes into that space. So
- 19:01Speaker 5: it's it's kind of a pressure issue and forces of
- 19:05Speaker 5: of of non non uniform forces.
- 19:10Speaker 2: It's an interesting look. It's definitely an interesting look until
- 19:13Speaker 2: until the thing is quite colmer. Sure, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 19:17Speaker 2: it's just the first time you noticed it, it's like,
- 19:18Speaker 2: when's this kid going to start losing your teeth? It's like, oh,
- 19:21Speaker 2: you have you have multiples in there. Okay, there very good.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Well at least you can chew, I suppose, so that's good.

- 22:25Speaker 2: Tuesday morning. The last couple a couple of weeks, for
- 22:29Speaker 2: some reason or another, man my weeks, I've been trying
- 22:31Speaker 2: to skip ahead to like Thursday or Friday. And you
- 22:34Speaker 2: would think, obviously because you want to get to the weekend.
- 22:36Speaker 2: That's not really really why. I've just for some reason,
- 22:38Speaker 2: I've been cutting out the middle of my weeks like
- 22:40Speaker 2: it's perpetually Thursday, like it's Monday and then Thursday, and
- 22:43Speaker 2: I have to wait for the actual days to catch.
- 22:46Speaker 5: Up for every long week when you're like Monday, today, today, Thursday,
- 22:50Speaker 5: but it's Monday. Wait, yeah, we got a long week ahead.
- 22:53Speaker 4: Yeah Sunday. Sorry, Well, what are we doing here?
- 22:56Speaker 2: Here's a call today if you have any questions for
- 22:58Speaker 2: the doctors three zero four three four five fifty fifty
- 23:00Speaker 2: three four five fifty fifty. We still have a few
- 23:01Speaker 2: topics that we're going to touch on before we get
- 23:03Speaker 2: out of here that we would love for you to
- 23:05Speaker 2: control portions of the conversation you could get in on
- 23:07Speaker 2: text message or to call the text line numbers three
- 23:10Speaker 2: or four nine, three five, five zero zero eight. One
- 23:12Speaker 2: of the other things we wanted to talk about. And
- 23:14Speaker 2: this is always interesting because uh, my wife tends to
- 23:17Speaker 2: buy all these little specialized little tubes of toothpaste, you know,
- 23:21Speaker 2: like uh, double triple whitening power and uh and the
- 23:25Speaker 2: whitest white that's ever whited and all these different things
- 23:27Speaker 2: on the and it tends to taste a little more medicinal,
- 23:31Speaker 2: and like the texture is a little less refined than
- 23:33Speaker 2: than what you get, and like your your main brands
- 23:35Speaker 2: or whatever else, I don't notice much of a difference,
- 23:38Speaker 2: to be honest with you, I've tried. What's the truth
- 23:40Speaker 2: with these things? That the extra white whitening white white toothpaste?
- 23:43Speaker 2: Is that doing anybody any favors?
- 23:46Speaker 3: Doctor Henley, what do you think about that?
- 23:48Speaker 4: Nope, I've heard it.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Simple answer.
- 23:53Speaker 5: There's a there's a comedian that's a dentist out there.
- 23:56Speaker 5: You sput out this is the biggest scam in dentistry.
- 23:59Speaker 3: Like what what is what does the biggest scam.
- 24:01Speaker 5: The whitening toothpaste? I mean, because the fact is that
- 24:05Speaker 5: to get your teeth white. You need prolonged contact. If
- 24:08Speaker 5: you want to use that whitening toothpaste for an hour
- 24:10Speaker 5: straight brushing your teeth, you might see a little bit
- 24:12Speaker 5: of a difference, but it's still very weak compared to
- 24:15Speaker 5: the bleaching material that really is required to lighten your teeth.
- 24:19Speaker 5: For instance, when we have just had a patient in
- 24:21Speaker 5: the office yesterday doing the n office whitening, we have
- 24:24Speaker 5: to cover all of the soft tissues, all the gums
- 24:28Speaker 5: and lips and protect them from this material we're putting
- 24:31Speaker 5: on the teeth because it's so caustic or so irritating
- 24:34Speaker 5: to soft tissues, to gums and whatnot that it would
- 24:40Speaker 5: damage them and bleach them. So we need to keep
- 24:43Speaker 5: it directly on the teeth so no one's out there
- 24:45Speaker 5: brushing with anything that strong or it will fry their gums. Right,
- 24:49Speaker 5: So the stuff that you use that's found in the
- 24:53Speaker 5: toothpaste is such a minimal amount that truthfully, it's not
- 24:58Speaker 5: going to do much for you.
- 25:00Speaker 2: So it's one of those things. If honestly, I don't
- 25:03Speaker 2: know if they actually charge a premium for those anymore
- 25:05Speaker 2: or not, or if it's all just a different like
- 25:07Speaker 2: title of different toothpaste, so you can kind of just
- 25:09Speaker 2: self select the thing that you think is unhealthy the most.
- 25:11Speaker 2: I haven't noticed. My wife does most of the shopping
- 25:13Speaker 2: on the tooth so I'm not really sure how that goes.
- 25:15Speaker 2: But I'm no, I'm just saying that it doesn't really that.
- 25:20Speaker 2: I don't. I haven't noticed the price difference so on
- 25:23Speaker 2: how much there is. But so if but if you're
- 25:25Speaker 2: in the situation where maybe you're paying a premium on
- 25:28Speaker 2: something like that, that might be something that's better spent
- 25:31Speaker 2: on floss or something maybe better spent elsewhere.
- 25:35Speaker 5: Now, so true, that is, that's true, and they do
- 25:38Speaker 5: charge typically premium. Yeah, ok, adives that you know makes
- 25:43Speaker 5: you feel like something's going on.
- 25:44Speaker 3: Now.
- 25:44Speaker 5: Interestingly enough, there is whitening flaws out there, and we
- 25:48Speaker 5: experimented with that. I remember in dental school it came
- 25:51Speaker 5: out and suddenly one of my dental student friends came in.
- 25:55Speaker 5: We're like looking at the teeth, like your teeth are
- 25:57Speaker 5: just white in between your teeth, Like, what's what He's like,
- 26:01Speaker 5: I've been trying this whitening floss. But it makes sense
- 26:03Speaker 5: because it actually has some mechanical action and some abrasives
- 26:06Speaker 5: in it that can remove some stain. So that's the
- 26:08Speaker 5: one over the counter whitening product that had a little
- 26:11Speaker 5: bit of a result that I found to be very interesting.
- 26:14Speaker 5: So yeah, spend the money on whitening floss rather than
- 26:17Speaker 5: the whitening toothpaste.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Maybe it might give you a weird frame around it too,
- 26:21Speaker 2: you know, like a reverse of what you normally see. Now,
- 26:24Speaker 2: that does remind me we've had the conversation before that.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Although you don't necessarily recommend the over the counter bleach
- 26:31Speaker 2: whitening things, there is activity there that might work. But
- 26:34Speaker 2: the problem is is it's very hard to control, like
- 26:37Speaker 2: your level of what you're going to get or how
- 26:38Speaker 2: it's what the end product's going to be.
- 26:40Speaker 3: Sure.
- 26:41Speaker 5: Now, there are over the counter whitening products, whitening strips
- 26:44Speaker 5: like Crest White strips, you know, the big one, and
- 26:46Speaker 5: there are other products out there too. Those do have
- 26:48Speaker 5: some effect because it instructs you to leave it on
- 26:51Speaker 5: contact with your teeth for a prolonged period of time,
- 26:54Speaker 5: for at least thirty to sixty minutes, and those can
- 26:57Speaker 5: show some improvement some patients. It works really well on
- 27:00Speaker 5: and just like everything else in medicine, that there's not
- 27:03Speaker 5: a one size fits all. Some people respond differently to things,
- 27:06Speaker 5: so I do encourage patients try that. If you want
- 27:09Speaker 5: an expensive whitening option, try that over the counterproduct rather
- 27:12Speaker 5: than the whitening toothpaste. See if that gets you a result.
- 27:15Speaker 5: But again, it's going to be touching your gum tissues,
- 27:19Speaker 5: so the concentration cannot be very high, as high as
- 27:22Speaker 5: what we use in the office protecting your gum tissues,
- 27:25Speaker 5: because if it were too high, it would it would
- 27:27Speaker 5: burn your gums.
- 27:28Speaker 2: Some of this stuff always concerns me a little bit
- 27:30Speaker 2: because of my own personal makeup in my personality. Hopefully
- 27:34Speaker 2: I'm not like this much as an adult. When I
- 27:36Speaker 2: was a kid, though, like when I first started getting
- 27:38Speaker 2: like acne when I was like ten or eleven years old,
- 27:41Speaker 2: there was like a face wash that was slightly medicinal
- 27:46Speaker 2: in somebody's like sea breeze or something. I can't remember
- 27:48Speaker 2: what the heck it was called, but I thought that
- 27:49Speaker 2: if you wash your face with it once and it helped,
- 27:51Speaker 2: that if you just kept on putting it on your
- 27:53Speaker 2: face like several times, you know whatever, you could probably
- 27:58Speaker 2: get rid of all the acne very quickly. And so
- 28:00Speaker 2: over a course of a weekend, I basically like burned
- 28:03Speaker 2: my face with with with cleaner when I was yeah,
- 28:08Speaker 2: and when my face heeled, the pimple was still there.
- 28:10Speaker 2: So it worked out very well.
- 28:12Speaker 4: When I was in high school, I had the same
- 28:13Speaker 4: thing happen. Like you know, we all have like acne
- 28:16Speaker 4: as we grow up during puberty, and so there was
- 28:18Speaker 4: this one like it was like a wipe and it
- 28:21Speaker 4: had hydrogen peroxide in it and no joke. One day
- 28:25Speaker 4: my brother goes, Carson, are your eyebrows bleached?
- 28:28Speaker 2: Oh?
- 28:28Speaker 4: No? And I go, I think they are. I'm like,
- 28:31Speaker 4: what's going on? Then I looked at the back and
- 28:33Speaker 4: sure enough feels hydrogen peroxide, which is what bleaches the teeth.
- 28:37Speaker 2: It can bleach the hair as well.
- 28:39Speaker 4: So I had a very odd look for maybe a
- 28:42Speaker 4: month until it grew back.
- 28:43Speaker 2: Oh you could have done your hair too, and then
- 28:44Speaker 2: had the kind of the slim shady look going on.
- 28:46Speaker 4: Oh I could have. Well, I actually did that once
- 28:49Speaker 4: and it was not a good look.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Just a couple of minutes left here this morning if
- 28:54Speaker 2: you'd like to get in to talk to doctor's Grebe
- 28:58Speaker 2: and Henley even gives a call this morning three zer
- 29:00Speaker 2: four three four five fifty to fifty eight three or
- 29:01Speaker 2: four three four five fifty to fifty Just talking about
- 29:03Speaker 2: some of the aftermarket mar market products, especially after market
- 29:07Speaker 2: like this is a car some of the over the
- 29:09Speaker 2: counter products like teeth whitening and things along those lines.
- 29:14Speaker 2: Your mallage's me vary basically, is the takeaway on this.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Generally speaking, because they're sold over the counter, they can't
- 29:19Speaker 2: be all that strong, and so they're not going to
- 29:21Speaker 2: do a whole lot for you, especially if you have
- 29:23Speaker 2: targeted And that being said, since we are coming up
- 29:25Speaker 2: on this summer and we've talked about this before with
- 29:27Speaker 2: like weddings and different things like that, that is something
- 29:29Speaker 2: if you do need to have, like a teeth cleaning
- 29:31Speaker 2: something like that, you can schedule and have something like that.
- 29:34Speaker 5: Oh for sure, And the sooner the better because there
- 29:37Speaker 5: is a certain preparation to that. In our office, we
- 29:40Speaker 5: generally have a two week preparation phase before whitening to
- 29:44Speaker 5: because a side effective whitening in particular is tooth sensitivity.
- 29:48Speaker 5: It can be quite extreme, so we take precautions to
- 29:51Speaker 5: avoid that. So it's unfortunately it's not something sometimes patients
- 29:55Speaker 5: come in and they say, you know, it's on Monday,
- 29:58Speaker 5: like oh, I want to get my teeth whitened for
- 30:00Speaker 5: my wedding this.
- 30:00Speaker 3: Weekend, Like, well, have you heard a photoshop.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Work?
- 30:06Speaker 5: And there are times that the one round of bleaching
- 30:09Speaker 5: doesn't get you the desired result. You have to do
- 30:11Speaker 5: a little bit more at home, So give yourself a
- 30:13Speaker 5: little more time than the day of Yeah, for sure.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Great advice is always from doctor Stephen Karieb. The last
- 30:20Speaker 2: thing we wanted touch on this morning, just a couple
- 30:22Speaker 2: minutes left. And it's interesting because this is a conversation
- 30:24Speaker 2: that we've had before, because of course I've had a
- 30:26Speaker 2: couple of root canals with the Greeve Dental group, but
- 30:28Speaker 2: also I finally overheard somebody having a conversation that I
- 30:31Speaker 2: didn't overhear. It was a podcast, but it wasn't about
- 30:34Speaker 2: dental hygiene or anything. It was just the host kind
- 30:36Speaker 2: of riffing a little bit talking about getting a root
- 30:39Speaker 2: canal done, and he revealed, you know, it wasn't that
- 30:41Speaker 2: big of a deal. He said, you know, I've gone
- 30:44Speaker 2: my whole life thinking this is something that I didn't
- 30:45Speaker 2: want to do because of the of the hysterics around it.
- 30:49Speaker 2: But then I went in and had it done, and man,
- 30:51Speaker 2: I'm glad I had it done because everything's better now. Yeah,
- 30:53Speaker 2: and that's generally and again your malaged me very because
- 30:56Speaker 2: everybody has a different situation. But we've come so far
- 30:59Speaker 2: as far as a medicine and technology and things like
- 31:02Speaker 2: that goes, you can get a root canal and not
- 31:05Speaker 2: be as evasive as what people once thought it was
- 31:08Speaker 2: exactly that.
- 31:09Speaker 3: That's true.
- 31:09Speaker 4: I am so thankful that I live in the modern
- 31:11Speaker 4: world where we can easily perform things like root canals
- 31:16Speaker 4: and actually save teeth, as opposed to in the old
- 31:18Speaker 4: days we say, well, you know, take out the teeth,
- 31:19Speaker 4: go towards a denture. You know, eventually you'll just have
- 31:22Speaker 4: no more teeth. But I'm also thankful that here at
- 31:25Speaker 4: greeb Dental Group, we have the technology to do it effectively,
- 31:29Speaker 4: and we have the three D X rays that allow
- 31:31Speaker 4: us to and I call it cheating whenever I take
- 31:34Speaker 4: that three D X ray on a tooth, because I
- 31:36Speaker 4: know exactly how long those those canals are in the
- 31:39Speaker 4: shape of them, and I guess you showed the patient like, hey,
- 31:41Speaker 4: look at this abscess, and they go, oh my goodness, yes,
- 31:44Speaker 4: I for sure need to get this done. So I
- 31:46Speaker 4: appreciate being a part of this group that is not
- 31:50Speaker 4: just talented, but we strive to be the best will
- 31:53Speaker 4: We won't stop until we make sure that each root
- 31:56Speaker 4: canal that we do is as more comfortable than the last, right,
- 32:00Speaker 4: And so it's it's it's kind of a cool thing.
- 32:02Speaker 5: And then to be clear, there are times that root
- 32:05Speaker 5: canals can be painful and patients I'm sure have experienced that,
- 32:09Speaker 5: and that stems from the tooth being so irritated that
- 32:12Speaker 5: no matter how much you numb it, it's it's it's
- 32:15Speaker 5: still going to be uncomfortable tooth.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:18Speaker 3: Yeah, so it's it's just very much inflamed. So in
- 32:22Speaker 3: those cases, I think in the past the dentists of
- 32:28Speaker 3: maybe just pressed on saying it's just gonna hurt and
- 32:31Speaker 3: gonna be dumblan that's kind of where the root canals
- 32:33Speaker 3: I think got the bad name. But now we've learned
- 32:35Speaker 3: that if we medicate that tooth a little bit, you know,
- 32:38Speaker 3: if it is hot, if it is sensitive to the patient,
- 32:41Speaker 3: then we stop what we're doing, put some medicine in it,
- 32:44Speaker 3: give the patient some antibiotics, bring it back in a week,
- 32:47Speaker 3: and then we do the procedure painlessly. So it's there
- 32:51Speaker 3: is some give and take there, but generally speaking, you know,
- 32:56Speaker 3: it's it's really not that big of a deal. So
- 32:58Speaker 3: I explain it to patients that it's it's kind of
- 33:01Speaker 3: like a filling, just a little bit deeper. It takes
- 33:03Speaker 3: a little bit longer.
