- 0:03Speaker 1: Smell us Now, lady, welcome to Meet Eater Trivia Metater Podcast.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Good lord, it's meeting to radio live. Welcome here to
- 0:29Speaker 2: the show. Eleven am. Mountain time. Don't you just say
- 0:31Speaker 2: all this, Phil? Do you tell people what time it is?
- 0:33Speaker 2: They like, they don't know.
- 0:34Speaker 3: I mean that's in the script every week. I mean
- 0:36Speaker 3: they could look at the clock, but it's just kind
- 0:38Speaker 3: of a way to mark place and time here.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Yeah. Uh, Here's where it gets tricky, Phil, is that
- 0:45Speaker 2: they're looking at a clock because they're watching on a
- 0:47Speaker 2: computer or the phone.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Okay, so you just think it's it's redundant.
- 0:53Speaker 2: It's eleven am.
- 0:54Speaker 3: This is discussion. Thank you.
- 0:56Speaker 2: January thirtieth, Meeting at her headquarters and bos of Montana.
- 0:59Speaker 2: I'm your host today, Steven Ronello. Today I'm joined by
- 1:01Speaker 2: Brody Henderson and Maggie Hudler And are you how are
- 1:05Speaker 2: you not here?
- 1:07Speaker 4: Exactly?
- 1:08Speaker 2: Tory is not. If someone thinks Cory Calkin's series not.
- 1:13Speaker 5: He's kind of not here like Corina is often.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Not He's not here. He's not here, He's not in
- 1:20Speaker 2: the room. On today's show, we got a couple of
- 1:22Speaker 2: things coming up. So on today's show, We're gonna chat
- 1:25Speaker 2: with Rick and Marty Laguina from History Channels to Curse
- 1:28Speaker 2: of Oak Island for a couple of reasons. One they're
- 1:31Speaker 2: fellow Michiganders. That's my home state. Two they're from the
- 1:36Speaker 2: cool part of Michigan, which is the Upper Peninsula. And
- 1:39Speaker 2: three I'm riding on their shirt tails. You know, you
- 1:42Speaker 2: hear coat tails and shirttails. I don't know which is
- 1:45Speaker 2: the better. Supposed to do the shirts.
- 1:47Speaker 5: Have tails coattails? Well, sure they do.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Yeah, they kind Yeah, they used to man shirts hang out.
- 1:54Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:54Speaker 2: I always try to find those shirts that don't have
- 1:56Speaker 2: that exaggerated I like the straight ones. If it's two straight,
- 2:00Speaker 2: it looks goofy though yet to be careful. Uh, We're
- 2:05Speaker 2: gonna talk to those fellas because I'm riding on their
- 2:07Speaker 2: shirt tails on the History Channel and so you know
- 2:10Speaker 2: they get the you know what it is, it's like
- 2:11Speaker 2: the opposite like you think. Like the other night I
- 2:13Speaker 2: was at I went to a stand up show, right so,
- 2:16Speaker 2: and uh I went to see me and my boy
- 2:18Speaker 2: went to see Kevin Hart. And Kevin Hart like Kevin Hart,
- 2:22Speaker 2: don't come out first? Do you follow me? They have Yeah,
- 2:27Speaker 2: other dudes come out and they get everybody kind of
- 2:29Speaker 2: fluffed up, and then Kevin Hart comes out. So this
- 2:33Speaker 2: is the opposite where like these guys get the audience,
- 2:38Speaker 2: they're like the Kevin Hart and then I'm like the
- 2:40Speaker 2: follow up dude. I'm like the dude, the support is terrible.
- 2:45Speaker 2: So we're gonna talk to them about that. Uh, we're
- 2:50Speaker 2: also gonna get into this most Januaries, I missed out
- 2:53Speaker 2: one time because of COVID. Every January we go down
- 2:55Speaker 2: to Hunt Kosire in Old Mexico. Uh, this year, at
- 2:59Speaker 2: the last second I had I had to bail because
- 3:02Speaker 2: my little boy had to get a knee surgery and
- 3:04Speaker 2: he was gonna be laid up and is laid up,
- 3:06Speaker 2: so I couldn't go. So we're gonna check in with
- 3:08Speaker 2: the fellows that did make it down to Mexico, Chase
- 3:10Speaker 2: and Kuzier, so I can find out what all happened.
- 3:12Speaker 7: Uh.
- 3:12Speaker 2: They were not feeding me any information, I think out
- 3:15Speaker 2: of respect because I couldn't be there, so they wanted
- 3:17Speaker 2: they didn't want to make me jealous. So I'm kind
- 3:19Speaker 2: of in the dark about how that all went. And
- 3:21Speaker 2: We're gonna talk to Parker Bradley from Alaska fish and
- 3:24Speaker 2: game about some interesting pike behavior. We've touched on this
- 3:28Speaker 2: a couple of times in the past, but like northern
- 3:31Speaker 2: pike being in I mean, all over the damn country.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Northern pike live in lakes and rivers that they're not
- 3:37Speaker 2: native to.
- 3:38Speaker 5: And they're circumpolar, aren't they?
- 3:40Speaker 2: Yeah right, yeah, Scofier. In a Scofier's cookbook, they have
- 3:45Speaker 2: pike recipes for the European pike, for the pike they
- 3:48Speaker 2: catch over in France. Anyhow, Uh, they've always been a
- 3:52Speaker 2: little bit magical and like, well, how in the hell
- 3:54Speaker 2: they get here? And we're gonna talk about a freakish
- 3:58Speaker 2: behavioral attribute that these Northern pike are exhibiting in Alaska
- 4:04Speaker 2: that helps explain some of the mystery about how those
- 4:07Speaker 2: sons of bitches are jumping from one drainage to the next.
- 4:11Speaker 2: So we're gonna do that. Then we're gonna talk about
- 4:13Speaker 2: three most memorable fishing trips with photo backup. Then I'm
- 4:19Speaker 2: supposed to say, but before we get to all that,
- 4:22Speaker 2: what have you guys been up too lately? But not you, Cory,
- 4:27Speaker 2: you ain't here.
- 4:29Speaker 5: Maggie, you go first.
- 4:30Speaker 8: Well, first off, I didn't know it was your birthday, Steve.
- 4:33Speaker 2: It's not.
- 4:34Speaker 3: It's not. Here's the thing. So our mutual friend Spencer
- 4:38Speaker 3: Newhart told everyone who's watching the show to say happy
- 4:41Speaker 3: birthday to you. But I'm pretty sure your birthday is
- 4:43Speaker 3: in two weeks, two weeks away.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll be halfway to one hundred and two and
- 4:46Speaker 2: two weeks.
- 4:47Speaker 3: So but you you've got You've got dozens of people
- 4:49Speaker 3: wishing you happy birthday, and.
- 4:51Speaker 8: The check it's nice, yeah, nice, happy early birthday.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Oh thank you. I don't know how old you are,
- 4:59Speaker 2: but dude, at this point, birthdays.
- 5:02Speaker 5: They just don't mean anything.
- 5:03Speaker 8: No.
- 5:04Speaker 2: My favorite restaurant in Bozeman is with Sabby. You know
- 5:06Speaker 2: the dudes that come in and they juggled their spatulism
- 5:08Speaker 2: and stuff.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Oh my kids love it there.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Well, I was there the other night for my little
- 5:11Speaker 2: boy's birthday and I was like, man, I'm going to
- 5:13Speaker 2: come here on my birthday. I'm call all my friends
- 5:16Speaker 2: and then by twenty minutes later, I'm like.
- 5:17Speaker 8: No, I'm not, that's my birthday. I'm like, ooh, I'm
- 5:22Speaker 8: going to get some oysters. I'm going to get some crabs.
- 5:25Speaker 8: I'm going to have a party and then I'm like,
- 5:27Speaker 8: then I have to share all this delicious food. I
- 5:30Speaker 8: think it's going to be a feast for about four
- 5:33Speaker 8: there you go.
- 5:34Speaker 2: So anyways, what's everybody off to?
- 5:36Speaker 8: I just moved into a new house that my boyfriend
- 5:40Speaker 8: and I have been building over the last nine months.
- 5:42Speaker 8: It's awesome.
- 5:43Speaker 2: This is your shattered kneecap, hockey playing, sheep guiding boyfriend.
- 5:47Speaker 8: Hold on together about three years, but we've known each
- 5:51Speaker 8: other pretty much our whole lives.
- 5:53Speaker 2: We think you want to get married? Are you like
- 5:55Speaker 2: against marriage?
- 5:56Speaker 8: I'm not against it. People just keep asking me about it.
- 5:59Speaker 8: I'm like, hey, we just built a house. Like, we
- 6:02Speaker 8: don't got money for a big party.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Right, Guys, got your car? Heead of your horse though, too.
- 6:06Speaker 5: That's a big move to Like, No, buy and build
- 6:09Speaker 5: a house together when you're not hitching what's his last name?
- 6:12Speaker 2: You can switch out?
- 6:13Speaker 8: Hell? No, I already told.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Him to switch out. Man, my wife never switched out.
- 6:17Speaker 2: It kills me. Do you really want to not switch out?
- 6:19Speaker 8: No?
- 6:20Speaker 2: My daughter never switch out.
- 6:21Speaker 8: But look on the internet and see how many other
- 6:24Speaker 8: Maggie Hudlows there are.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Well, they can people can track you down.
- 6:28Speaker 8: There's not other Maggie hudlows Maggie Hudler. There's a pile
- 6:33Speaker 8: of Maggie Olsen's out there.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:36Speaker 8: No, I'll never switch.
- 6:37Speaker 2: I sit both sides, Like I said, I wish my
- 6:39Speaker 2: wife would, but I told my daughter never do that. See, Yeah,
- 6:42Speaker 2: you gotta hang on your name. So it's like I
- 6:44Speaker 2: just it's very you know, depends.
- 6:47Speaker 8: Yeah, so you know, one day we'll probably have a big,
- 6:50Speaker 8: awesome party and get hitched. But now I'll never change
- 6:53Speaker 8: my name. Something I gotta I gotta hang on too.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Let's transition to Brody Brody, you're married a long time?
- 7:02Speaker 5: Yeah, Actually that place into what I've been up to lately.
- 7:06Speaker 5: This is like, like this time of year is kind
- 7:08Speaker 5: of hard for me. I get mild seasonal effective disorder whatever.
- 7:13Speaker 2: My dog has that.
- 7:14Speaker 5: And my wife says, I get real cranky.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Yeah, there's no dragons a slave right now.
- 7:19Speaker 5: No, but we're like emerging from that. It's starting. Days
- 7:22Speaker 5: are getting a little longer, you know, so there'll be
- 7:26Speaker 5: cool stuff to do soon. So I haven't been up
- 7:28Speaker 5: to too much other than like like planning. I don't
- 7:32Speaker 5: know if you do this, but I feel like it's
- 7:34Speaker 5: important when you got kids like you really got to
- 7:36Speaker 5: kind of plan your year out, like hunting fish and wise,
- 7:40Speaker 5: because you know, with those kids, there's always like conflicting
- 7:44Speaker 5: things going on. Sure, so I've been mapping stuff out
- 7:47Speaker 5: on the calendar, which is always fun.
- 7:49Speaker 2: That's good.
- 7:49Speaker 8: Yeah, so I don't have kids to worry about planning about.
- 7:52Speaker 8: But my sister explained it as happily financially in with
- 8:00Speaker 8: three dogs. That's my situation.
- 8:04Speaker 2: But the house you guys fixed up, was it a
- 8:05Speaker 2: mass or was it?
- 8:06Speaker 8: No? We built it?
- 8:07Speaker 2: Oh I thought you meant you read it? No guilt scratch.
- 8:11Speaker 8: It's uh. It's basically a big, a big ass shop
- 8:15Speaker 8: with a living quarters attached to it.
- 8:17Speaker 2: So to your palms a.
- 8:22Speaker 8: Little bit. I've spent a lot of time. We did
- 8:26Speaker 8: concrete floors and some concrete countertops, and uh, you know,
- 8:30Speaker 8: it's like a cheaper option. And man, I spent a
- 8:33Speaker 8: lot of time sand and concrete and staying in it,
- 8:36Speaker 8: and a lot of a lot of time on the concrete.
- 8:39Speaker 8: But it looks really nice. We got a nice big
- 8:41Speaker 8: walnut butcher block in the center of the kitchen, and
- 8:44Speaker 8: the garage has five huge doors to pull throughs. Oh really, Yeah,
- 8:50Speaker 8: it's a it's a giant garage. That's we gotta have
- 8:54Speaker 8: places to put the boats and and all the fun stuff.
- 8:57Speaker 8: And now we're just trying to organize ours and garbage.
- 9:00Speaker 2: So he got well, congratulations.
- 9:02Speaker 8: Thanks.
- 9:03Speaker 2: You know the James Gang when they used to rob
- 9:05Speaker 2: this is legend. I don't know if it's true. When
- 9:07Speaker 2: they used to rob trains, they check your hands. If
- 9:10Speaker 2: you had callouses, they let you slide because they were dandies.
- 9:13Speaker 2: If you didn't have callous as you were getting robbed.
- 9:16Speaker 8: I get the most callouses in the summer from rowing
- 9:19Speaker 8: the drift boat.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Now, if I saw those boys coming, I'd be scratching.
- 9:25Speaker 2: How's that? Phil?
- 9:26Speaker 3: That was some lovely banter. Guys, you knocked it out
- 9:29Speaker 3: of the park.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Okay, are we ready to switch over?
- 9:34Speaker 3: Let's do it?
- 9:35Speaker 2: Okay, do we got Rick and Marty or Rick and
- 9:37Speaker 2: Marty here.
- 9:40Speaker 9: We're here.
- 9:42Speaker 2: First off, man, tell me a little bit. Give me
- 9:44Speaker 2: a quick snapshot of growing up in the up did
- 9:46Speaker 2: you guys? Had you guys family been up there a
- 9:50Speaker 2: long time? Were they newcomers or how that come about?
- 9:54Speaker 5: Well?
- 9:55Speaker 4: First, wait, wait, I got to wish you a happy birthday. Oh,
- 9:57Speaker 4: thank you, and everybody else who's confused.
- 10:01Speaker 10: Yeah, you go ahead, Rick, Well, it was you know,
- 10:08Speaker 10: kind of like you know what you do in your life.
- 10:12Speaker 10: You're outside a lot, you know, you've got your friends,
- 10:15Speaker 10: you engage in whatever activity you want to do. It
- 10:19Speaker 10: was sports and in the woods and fishing and a
- 10:24Speaker 10: little bit of hunting and going on with our uncles
- 10:27Speaker 10: and yeah, it was just a magical time, much simpler
- 10:32Speaker 10: than today. And like I said, you spent most of
- 10:36Speaker 10: your time outside playing ball and just having a good
- 10:39Speaker 10: old time.
- 10:40Speaker 6: There's a up.
- 10:41Speaker 2: What's what's the first example you guys can think of
- 10:45Speaker 2: when you go back to when you were little boys.
- 10:47Speaker 2: What's the first example of you guys setting out to
- 10:50Speaker 2: go try to find a lost something or another, or
- 10:56Speaker 2: like to like make a discovery.
- 10:59Speaker 4: That's an easy one.
- 11:00Speaker 11: We were looking for a treasure under what we called
- 11:03Speaker 11: the maybe not politically acceptable anymore, but under the Indian Rock,
- 11:08Speaker 11: which was this rock out in the woods that had
- 11:10Speaker 11: a band around it, and all the young boys in
- 11:13Speaker 11: the neighborhood spent Rick, I don't know, two or three
- 11:16Speaker 11: summers trying to move this rock because we were sure
- 11:18Speaker 11: there was treasure underneath.
- 11:21Speaker 4: We still want to go back and move that thing.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Do you guys have a do you have a checklist
- 11:27Speaker 2: of Like when your work, if you work at Oak
- 11:30Speaker 2: Island concludes, do you have a do you have a
- 11:34Speaker 2: what's next?
- 11:39Speaker 10: We always have a plan moving forward, but you know,
- 11:42Speaker 10: it's pretty fluid up there. You know, you find something,
- 11:44Speaker 10: you move off. There's it's it's multifaceted search. So you
- 11:49Speaker 10: have the money pit work, the excavations with Billy, You've
- 11:53Speaker 10: got archaeological work going on. You've got Gary Drayton metal detecting,
- 11:58Speaker 10: so you know when when something's following, you kind of
- 12:01Speaker 10: skew that direction and follow that lead. And then of
- 12:05Speaker 10: course you got the lab in the application of science,
- 12:07Speaker 10: so it's you. It's not a it's a pretty active
- 12:11Speaker 10: work site.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Yeah, well that that's great and I appreciate. But what
- 12:15Speaker 2: I what I meant was, if you picture yourself, if
- 12:18Speaker 2: you imagine ten years down the road, twenty years down
- 12:21Speaker 2: the road, whatever do you have like the next place
- 12:25Speaker 2: or the next quest that you guys get involved in?
- 12:28Speaker 2: You know, I mean, do you have a list of like, Okay,
- 12:30Speaker 2: when when we're done, when our work here is done,
- 12:32Speaker 2: we need to move on to whatever.
- 12:36Speaker 11: Well, first of all, in twenty years I'd like to
- 12:38Speaker 11: make sure I'm still alive number one as far as
- 12:41Speaker 11: the goals go. But I don't think we've really addressed
- 12:44Speaker 11: that very well, Harry Rick. The Oak Island has been
- 12:47Speaker 11: all consuming, and it keeps throwing stuff at us. Right
- 12:51Speaker 11: about the time we're you know, ready to maybe say boy,
- 12:54Speaker 11: this is this is it, it'll throw something a curveball
- 12:57Speaker 11: in terms of an artifact or something. So I don't
- 13:00Speaker 11: think we've planned very well past that. We're we're interested
- 13:02Speaker 11: in other things and we've got involved in other quests
- 13:06Speaker 11: that other people are taking the lead on. But beyond that,
- 13:09Speaker 11: Oak Island's pretty all consuming.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, what are some of the latest Tell people
- 13:16Speaker 2: about some of the latest things you guys have found
- 13:18Speaker 2: out there that keeps you, that keeps you wanting to
- 13:20Speaker 2: keep going, big brother.
- 13:25Speaker 10: Well, for me, it's you know, it's kind of a
- 13:28Speaker 10: close association, Steve to what you're doing with your new show,
- 13:31Speaker 10: you know, following history. I think the research component and
- 13:35Speaker 10: the historical associations we've made to date through the finds
- 13:40Speaker 10: of the artifacts and the digging and the money pit
- 13:43Speaker 10: and the application of science, but it's really the research
- 13:47Speaker 10: that is coming to fore. There's a treasure hunting component,
- 13:51Speaker 10: and there's the historical research component which you're all about.
- 13:54Speaker 10: And like just the other day, I got coming to
- 13:58Speaker 10: believe that there's we're on a real national treasure you
- 14:01Speaker 10: know the National Treasure movie. We're on a real national
- 14:03Speaker 10: treasure hunt. There are significant historical figures that we believe
- 14:08Speaker 10: have played some sort of role in association with the
- 14:11Speaker 10: Oak Island mystery. So so to me, it's a big
- 14:14Speaker 10: component is the history. But certainly there's a fascinating treasure
- 14:18Speaker 10: hunt too.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Now I gotta ask as well, what, uh, I know,
- 14:23Speaker 2: you guys, So you guys got some land there, what's
- 14:26Speaker 2: the what's the what's your vibe on the hunt and
- 14:28Speaker 2: fishing potential out there on Oak Island? Should I be
- 14:32Speaker 2: out there hitting it? Or what?
- 14:34Speaker 4: Off shore? I think you could be hitting it?
- 14:36Speaker 11: Yeah, there's all kinds of fishing off shore on the
- 14:38Speaker 11: island not so much so.
- 14:40Speaker 2: So you know, there's not like a resident I don't whatever.
- 14:42Speaker 2: There's not like a resident deer population or a lot
- 14:45Speaker 2: of Yeah.
- 14:46Speaker 4: No, no, no, there's a resident deer population.
- 14:48Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 14:48Speaker 11: I was thinking fishing. There aren't any streams or anything
- 14:51Speaker 11: unless you're a big eel fisherman, because there's lots of
- 14:54Speaker 11: those in the swamp.
- 14:54Speaker 2: No. I like the eels for sure. So you got
- 14:57Speaker 2: to see some game when you're out there, when you're
- 14:58Speaker 2: all done, like you're saying that I I should be
- 15:00Speaker 2: out there, I can go out there and hunt.
- 15:03Speaker 4: I think.
- 15:03Speaker 10: So I can tell you what you can do is
- 15:06Speaker 10: you know, come come on up, you know, be a
- 15:09Speaker 10: part of the treasure hunt and do a podcast from
- 15:11Speaker 10: up there. But I can I can easily affirm.
- 15:14Speaker 6: To you that.
- 15:14Speaker 10: And you've probably been there in New Brunswick and in Newfoundland. Yep,
- 15:18Speaker 10: you'd have a fantastic time.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Yeah. No, I've hunted up I've hunted up there before
- 15:22Speaker 2: one time. The last time I hunted up in New Brunswick,
- 15:25Speaker 2: I left. I kind of did a questionable move. My
- 15:28Speaker 2: wife was like pretty pregnant, and I drove up there
- 15:32Speaker 2: and we were hunting and I got a call basically
- 15:35Speaker 2: saying turn around and come back or or don't come back,
- 15:40Speaker 2: and so I had to cut my I had to
- 15:42Speaker 2: cut my trip short. But now that all that's behind me,
- 15:44Speaker 2: i'd like to come out there and check it out. No,
- 15:45Speaker 2: I would definitely like to come up and see the island.
- 15:48Speaker 2: And meet you guys for real and uh and talk
- 15:50Speaker 2: about the home state. So I appreciate you guys coming on. Man,
- 15:54Speaker 2: everybody is checking out. Watch new episodes of the Curse
- 15:57Speaker 2: of Oak Island on History Channel Tuesday nights at nine
- 16:01Speaker 2: eastern eighth Central and then and then if you if
- 16:05Speaker 2: you got it in you stay on because we're premiering
- 16:08Speaker 2: a new show there as well that follows the Curse

- 16:22Speaker 2: I appreciate it.
- 16:23Speaker 9: Thank you.
- 16:24Speaker 2: That's great. All right.
- 16:25Speaker 10: I just want to tell you that our nephews, Peter
- 16:27Speaker 10: David and Daniel Fernetti are big fans.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Oh in your show. Tell him, I said, thanks, And
- 16:34Speaker 2: you shoot over an address and we'll send them up
- 16:36Speaker 2: some books and stuff if you if you got if
- 16:37Speaker 2: you can pass along for somebody, I'd love to. All right, guys,
- 16:41Speaker 2: thanks so much.
- 16:41Speaker 11: Man.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Good luck with your good luck with your hunt, good
- 16:43Speaker 2: luck with your show, good luck with yours. All right,
- 16:47Speaker 2: take it easy, see take care, bye bye, all right.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Mexico Cops hunt check in with Randall and Seth. That's
- 16:55Speaker 2: what we got. Randall and South. Where the hell they
- 16:57Speaker 2: coming from?
- 16:58Speaker 3: Why don't we ask them?
- 17:00Speaker 2: Are you guys live? We're just like a trick Mexico.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Oh oh, so you are there?
- 17:05Speaker 9: Aloha me and migos mayamo rojo grande. All right?
- 17:13Speaker 2: Was the kate was? Were they rotting hard? I don't
- 17:18Speaker 2: even know where to begin. Were you seeing like hard
- 17:20Speaker 2: rotting grab ass action? Uh? Yes, and no I recognized
- 17:26Speaker 2: that fireplace. How do you guys got such a good
- 17:28Speaker 2: connection by that fireplace?
- 17:30Speaker 1: Oh there's a starlingla now.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Oh, I see, it's just as warm in there as normal.
- 17:38Speaker 9: We had snow on the ground this morning, so.
- 17:40Speaker 1: It snowed last night and was like twenty two degrees
- 17:43Speaker 1: or so.
- 17:44Speaker 9: Yeah, Seth and I were on a pretty uh pretty
- 17:46Speaker 9: frigid ridge all morning and uh stop down to the
- 17:50Speaker 9: house to hop on. So we're enjoying this fire and
- 17:53Speaker 9: some fresh cafe.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Got it? Uh so? So hard ass grab ass rought
- 17:58Speaker 2: action or no.
- 18:00Speaker 9: There's a lot of chasing. Yannis saw a buck he
- 18:05Speaker 9: thinks unsuccessfully breed a dough. But yeah, the bucks that
- 18:10Speaker 9: we've seen have all been pretty active. It's been sporadic though.
- 18:15Speaker 9: We're seeing like a ton of action on one hillside
- 18:18Speaker 9: and then we go back the next day and zero deear,
- 18:22Speaker 9: So it's kind of been hide and seek a little bit.
- 18:25Speaker 7: Yeah, and we've been seeing Dose pretty frequently that don't
- 18:29Speaker 7: have any bucks with him?
- 18:30Speaker 2: Yeah, got god? And how many bucks you guys gotten
- 18:32Speaker 2: down there?
- 18:35Speaker 7: We got four so far, Yanni's Today is our last
- 18:38Speaker 7: day and Yanni is the only one that still needs
- 18:41Speaker 7: to get one, so he's out there right now.
- 18:43Speaker 1: He's looking for mucho grande though.
- 18:45Speaker 9: Yeah, Yanni's Yannis prepared to eat the tag if he
- 18:48Speaker 9: doesn't see the right dear. So, he and the rest
- 18:51Speaker 9: of the crew are all hunting hard right now. Got
- 18:54Speaker 9: to sit by the fire.
- 18:56Speaker 2: It's good to see you guys. I miss you, guys.
- 18:58Speaker 2: I've been dominating the question here, so I'm gonna let
- 19:00Speaker 2: Brody and Maggie asks you a bunch of questions.
- 19:03Speaker 5: Did you get some good ones?
- 19:07Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 19:08Speaker 7: So, Uh, Peter hal from Zig is down here, which
- 19:11Speaker 7: is cool because we're getting to play with a bunch
- 19:13Speaker 7: of new SIG products.
- 19:15Speaker 9: I can test that out.
- 19:16Speaker 1: But he he shot a giant.
- 19:22Speaker 7: Nice It's definitely the biggest one I've seen come off
- 19:24Speaker 7: of this ranch.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Raynad's about to show you right here.
- 19:32Speaker 2: And you folks watching from home, you need to understand
- 19:34Speaker 2: that you're looking at like what's It's like a desert
- 19:36Speaker 2: white tail, like a mini white tail.
- 19:38Speaker 9: And he's got a he's got a split G two
- 19:41Speaker 9: on the one side, so he looks like a mulely
- 19:44Speaker 9: on that side.
- 19:45Speaker 2: Yep. But that that runs that way because we've gotten
- 19:47Speaker 2: a couple of them there like that with that same split.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Jim had the finger probably roll over dead if I
- 19:53Speaker 2: just said that that runs that way down there.
- 19:57Speaker 9: Yeah, he's a pretty impressive buck and he's he's got
- 20:00Speaker 9: a little bit of palmation and he's kind of some
- 20:02Speaker 9: of the times are bladed. So that was Cal shot
- 20:06Speaker 9: a real nice one. Uh he saw it the first
- 20:09Speaker 9: night and killed it two days later.
- 20:12Speaker 1: There you go, that's Cal's buck blade it out.
- 20:15Speaker 2: That is ye go back to that big one. I'm
- 20:17Speaker 2: gonna come back to Cal's. We go back to that
- 20:18Speaker 2: big one for met. Was that like, uh, did you
- 20:21Speaker 2: guys find him and then rEFInd him and then rEFInd him?
- 20:24Speaker 2: Was it like a holy shit? There he is kind
- 20:26Speaker 2: of moment.
- 20:27Speaker 9: Well, we Seth and Giannis and I were on the
- 20:30Speaker 9: same ridge, but maybe a mile down and uh, we
- 20:34Speaker 9: would just listen to the whole thing on the radio.
- 20:36Speaker 9: But I think they glassed him up. He had a
- 20:39Speaker 9: dough that he was trying to lock down and uh
- 20:43Speaker 9: seemed to be right out in the open, so they
- 20:47Speaker 9: Pete and Cal made a big stock on him and
- 20:51Speaker 9: wrapped around the face and ended up getting a shot.
- 20:55Speaker 9: But that that's kind of the only big buck that's
- 20:59Speaker 9: really made himself visible for a significant period of time.
- 21:04Speaker 9: I think Col's buck is just sort of like you know, appeared.
- 21:10Speaker 9: He was betted the first night when you guys saw him.
- 21:12Speaker 7: Yeah, we saw uh, we spotted calsbuck on the first evening.
- 21:17Speaker 1: It wasn't even like our first hunt day.
- 21:19Speaker 7: We just happened to get down here and have enough
- 21:21Speaker 7: time to run up on the hill and do some
- 21:23Speaker 7: glasses and we and Cal almost killed him on the
- 21:25Speaker 7: first evening, but he caught up with him two days later.
- 21:31Speaker 9: And Yeah, a lot of the bucks, most of the
- 21:34Speaker 9: bucks that were se like I saw ten or twelve
- 21:37Speaker 9: bucks yesterday, Wow, all of them. All of them were chasing,
- 21:42Speaker 9: but just no big bucks. And the big bucks that
- 21:45Speaker 9: we've seen a lot of them are really broken, and
- 21:47Speaker 9: that seems to be We've heard like this year, for
- 21:50Speaker 9: whatever reason, a lot of the big bucks are broken.
- 21:53Speaker 9: M It doesn't bother me, but some people either. Yeah.
- 21:59Speaker 9: Uh So then Seth and I both got deer on
- 22:03Speaker 9: back to back days, I think Tuesday and Wednesday maybe
- 22:06Speaker 9: yep or something like that, and that was fantastic. Yeah,
- 22:12Speaker 9: well ours are not nearly as impressive, but we're both
- 22:15Speaker 9: very happy. They're like, you know, maighties low nineties deer,
- 22:21Speaker 9: and yeah, I might shot at like to two hundred
- 22:24Speaker 9: and fifty yards. He was chasing a dough with another
- 22:27Speaker 9: smaller buck and they were just kind of pinballing around,
- 22:30Speaker 9: and he popped up and got a shot at him,
- 22:33Speaker 9: and then Seth had a real uh search for his buck.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:39Speaker 7: I spotted my buck and made a move on him,
- 22:44Speaker 7: lost him like you typically do down here, and popped
- 22:47Speaker 7: up on this little bumps to try to get a
- 22:50Speaker 7: good advantage of this hillside where he was, and he
- 22:54Speaker 7: ended up betting with a dough about one hundred and
- 22:57Speaker 7: twenty yards from where I was, and I actually had
- 23:00Speaker 7: to in order to shoot him, I had to leave
- 23:03Speaker 7: my bump that I was on and make a big
- 23:06Speaker 7: loop around and shoot him at like three hundred yards
- 23:10Speaker 7: where I could actually see him.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Oh God, it house jealous right now? Can you tell jealous?
- 23:15Speaker 8: Well?
- 23:17Speaker 9: The uh, I mean, the big story this week, I
- 23:20Speaker 9: think has been the wind. Everybody's been telling me that
- 23:23Speaker 9: it's usually rather calm here, but we've been getting gusts
- 23:26Speaker 9: up to like thirty and pretty steady fifteen ten to
- 23:30Speaker 9: fifteen mile an hour winds all week. So there have
- 23:34Speaker 9: been some long cold days and the big stablized binoculars
- 23:41Speaker 9: have really, uh oh yah been a lifesaver because and
- 23:45Speaker 9: I hadn't I'd messed around with them like out of
- 23:47Speaker 9: the truck or out of the house, but I really
- 23:50Speaker 9: hadn't had them out in these kind of conditions. And
- 23:53Speaker 9: you throw those things on the tripod, and even if
- 23:56Speaker 9: it's blowing your tripod around, your image is like crystal clear.
- 24:00Speaker 9: So I've I've oftentimes like just had to take my
- 24:03Speaker 9: regular binos down and throw up the stabilized ones just
- 24:06Speaker 9: for the wind factor.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Of Yeah. Then the next thing you got to figure
- 24:10Speaker 2: out is how to make your eyeballs not water.
- 24:13Speaker 9: Oh, the corners of my eyes are chafed badly. A
- 24:19Speaker 9: lot of tears a lot of sunscreen, a lot of wind.
- 24:22Speaker 9: It's not a good recipe for my optical health.
- 24:26Speaker 8: Well, the stabilized bos are cool. What other fun sig
- 24:30Speaker 8: stuff have you guys been messing around with down there?
- 24:33Speaker 9: Well, there's one, there's one item that we're told not
- 24:37Speaker 9: not to What happens down in Mexico stays in Mexico.
- 24:44Speaker 9: Great Toby Keith, but pretty neat stuff. We we also
- 24:48Speaker 9: have used the the range finding binos. Yep, are those
- 24:53Speaker 9: the kilow tens maybe something? And uh, but yeah, those
- 24:58Speaker 9: those are pretty amazing for because they have the uh
- 25:02Speaker 9: they have the wind calculation dialed in. So yeah, when
- 25:07Speaker 9: we're sitting out there glass and stuff and range and stuff,
- 25:10Speaker 9: you can plug in like a ten mile an hour
- 25:12Speaker 9: value and it'll give you your correction in minutes of angles,
- 25:15Speaker 9: so or mills. But we're shooting both the guns we
- 25:19Speaker 9: have are shooting minutes of angles. So that's been pretty
- 25:22Speaker 9: fun to see and like check that against the dope
- 25:25Speaker 9: on your phone.
- 25:26Speaker 1: And yeah, there's been a lot of chatter about wind calls.
- 25:29Speaker 9: Yes, a lot of chatter about wind calls. I was
- 25:31Speaker 9: very grateful to shoot my dear at two hundred and
- 25:35Speaker 9: twenty five yards or whatever it was, because I don't
- 25:38Speaker 9: think I would have really wanted to stretch it out
- 25:40Speaker 9: very far in those conditions.
- 25:41Speaker 2: I got I got two more questions. When I go
- 25:46Speaker 2: down there, you always find that the Bocarrols, the ba Carrols,
- 25:49Speaker 2: Buck Harrols, buck Harrows. No matter what deer you bring back,
- 25:54Speaker 2: they tell you that no, no, no, no, no, no, that's
- 25:57Speaker 2: not him. Yeah, been happening.
- 26:02Speaker 9: Well, I haven't talked with them much. Cal has been
- 26:05Speaker 9: our primary liaison to the Lacas. His Spanish is actually remarkable. No,
- 26:11Speaker 9: he does good, although he doesn't do like the performative
- 26:15Speaker 9: accent that a lot of people do when they speak
- 26:17Speaker 9: a foreign language. It just sounds like Cal. He speaks
- 26:20Speaker 9: in the same cadence with just different words. But we
- 26:27Speaker 9: did have a couple of reports of bucks that the
- 26:30Speaker 9: cowboys had seen, and you know, had the hills that
- 26:34Speaker 9: they'd seen him on, And there is even a set
- 26:36Speaker 9: of sheds from this year near the house that we're
- 26:40Speaker 9: looking for that buck. But we have not been able
- 26:42Speaker 9: to turn up any of the the famous cowboy bucks.
- 26:46Speaker 2: Yeah, here's my other question.
- 26:49Speaker 9: No, No, I was gonna say the cat. I think
- 26:52Speaker 9: the Viccaro's cat is having a real field day. Whenever
- 26:55Speaker 9: we bring back a deear, it's like fighting us for
- 26:59Speaker 9: little strips of hide and meet. And that's kind of
- 27:03Speaker 9: also been our primary mode of entertainment is the cat's
- 27:07Speaker 9: increasingly aggressive behavior around any sort of meat.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Randall, I need to share with you two comments that
- 27:14Speaker 2: have come in. I'm gonna build you up and I'm
- 27:16Speaker 2: gonna bring you down. Sure, there's a guy that says
- 27:19Speaker 2: you look like Jim Harrison, followed up by a guy
- 27:23Speaker 2: that says you look homeless.
- 27:25Speaker 6: So I.
- 27:29Speaker 5: Did Jim Harrison ever spend time as a homeless person.
- 27:33Speaker 2: If you're gonna look like Harrison, you need to take
- 27:34Speaker 2: a beer bottle and gouage one of your eyes so
- 27:36Speaker 2: it doesn't work right, which is what happened to him.
- 27:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:41Speaker 9: She said it looked like a Civil warrying actor in
- 27:43Speaker 9: the photo and said that I took that to me
- 27:45Speaker 9: and I need to cut my hair.
- 27:48Speaker 2: I got another question for you. You know how I couldn't
- 27:50Speaker 2: go to my boy had to have knee surgery. Well,
- 27:54Speaker 2: thanks for asking how he's doing.
- 27:57Speaker 9: Oh I I was communicating uh with Jannison. We were
- 28:02Speaker 9: getting updates, We were we were all sitting around the
- 28:04Speaker 9: table the other day and we Yanni, you were texting
- 28:07Speaker 9: me Steve, and then Yanni was like, we were asking
- 28:10Speaker 9: for updates through our Uh.
- 28:11Speaker 7: Yeah, we're we're all asking how how Maddy was doing.
- 28:16Speaker 2: Funny because none of those they were all unfulfilled.
- 28:20Speaker 9: I did. I did text Katie. I did text Katie
- 28:24Speaker 9: to see how the surgery went.
- 28:25Speaker 2: Well, you went straight to my you went straight to
- 28:26Speaker 2: my you went straight to my woman.
- 28:30Speaker 9: You're a busy man.
- 28:31Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, that's cool, that's cool. Anybody else, Yeah.
- 28:35Speaker 5: I've heard enough.
- 28:36Speaker 2: How long do you guys want to talk for We're
- 28:38Speaker 2: getting bored.
- 28:39Speaker 9: Oh we did. We did want to mention that yesterday
- 28:42Speaker 9: Jannis ate eleven or twelve burritos.
- 28:49Speaker 6: Record so we.
- 28:50Speaker 9: Got blowney sandwich is the day before and he ate
- 28:54Speaker 9: his at eleven and then spent the rest of the
- 28:56Speaker 9: day talking about how he could have had more than
- 28:58Speaker 9: one blooney sandwich. So the next day he took six
- 29:01Speaker 9: burritos for lunch and he gave me one, but he
- 29:05Speaker 9: had two at breakfast and I think three at dinner.
- 29:08Speaker 9: So that would yeah, that would probably make maybe it. Yeah,
- 29:12Speaker 9: that's like ten or eleven, so Anyway, the tortillas have
- 29:15Speaker 9: been thin, so Janni's consumed twenty some tortillas yesterday.
- 29:19Speaker 2: Were doubling rand. We got another guy saying, you just
- 29:22Speaker 2: look like you're from Ohio.
- 29:25Speaker 9: No, that's true that I'll take that as a high compliment.
- 29:28Speaker 9: Thank you, Chase. That's lovely.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Hey, you know what about being from Ohio. I don't
- 29:33Speaker 2: know if you ever read the right stuff, but there's
- 29:36Speaker 2: something steely about Ohio. Dudes. It's like what you want
- 29:40Speaker 2: when you're trying to man a spaceship. Yep, they want
- 29:45Speaker 2: to lean. They want it leaning into Ohio.
- 29:49Speaker 9: There's something there's there's a rich soil.
- 29:54Speaker 2: All right, Well, good luck tell Jannie, I said, good luck.
- 29:58Speaker 2: I wish I could be there. In all seriousness. Miss
- 30:00Speaker 2: you guys terrible uh yeah, you know all that kind
- 30:03Speaker 2: of stuff.
- 30:04Speaker 9: We'll see you very soon.
- 30:05Speaker 2: All right, thanks Boddy, see you guys. Yaas was that
- 30:14Speaker 2: long enough?
- 30:14Speaker 3: How are you doing on Steve? You are you're doing
- 30:17Speaker 3: incredible schedule?
- 30:20Speaker 2: Yes, oh so now we take time for listener feedback.
- 30:24Speaker 3: That's right, dude.
- 30:25Speaker 2: I'm mostly no, no, not to hack on the boys there,
- 30:27Speaker 2: but I'm I'm mostly excited about the northern pike deal.
- 30:31Speaker 3: Oh he's coming up.
- 30:32Speaker 2: No, I don't want to know. I'm saying I want
- 30:34Speaker 2: to jump to it. Let's do some well, how you've
- 30:37Speaker 2: been hanging on this part?
- 30:38Speaker 3: The listener feedback, well, the The idea is throughout the show,
- 30:42Speaker 3: people can ask questions in the live chat. I bookmark
- 30:44Speaker 3: the ones I think are are good or could open
- 30:47Speaker 3: up some interesting conversation. So if we haven't gotten a
- 30:50Speaker 3: lot of questions, guys, this might be Steve's last time here,
- 30:52Speaker 3: and who knows, like you, you should feel lucky. So
- 30:55Speaker 3: if you have questions for Steve, get him in here
- 30:57Speaker 3: right now, because I don't know what he's gonna be
- 31:00Speaker 3: coming down here all the time.
- 31:01Speaker 5: Might be your last time. It's like you're dying or.
- 31:05Speaker 3: You're you're just you're you're a busy gal.
- 31:07Speaker 2: I'm gonna start coming here all the time.
- 31:08Speaker 3: We would love that. Yeah, people, people want to see it.
- 31:12Speaker 3: Let's see, we got to start with a lighter one.
- 31:14Speaker 3: Mogre is asking a question for Steve. Hi, when you're
- 31:18Speaker 3: not participating in trivia or radio live, how closely do
- 31:20Speaker 3: you follow the events during your travels? Do you keep
- 31:22Speaker 3: up with the shows by watching or listening to them.
- 31:24Speaker 3: I have a feeling I know the answer to this question,
- 31:26Speaker 3: but I just thought, you know, people, the people would
- 31:28Speaker 3: like to know.
- 31:29Speaker 2: I listened to a lot of stuff. I watch bits
- 31:32Speaker 2: of a lot of stuff, but I mostly talked every buddy.
- 31:35Speaker 3: That's what I like to do, is talk to every buddy.
- 31:37Speaker 3: Probably a better use of your time.
- 31:39Speaker 8: Uh.
- 31:40Speaker 3: Question for Steve from John did the stolen cooler of
- 31:43Speaker 3: frozen fish ever get resolved?
- 31:46Speaker 2: No, it's still it's just gone, dude. Okay, someone's licking
- 31:51Speaker 2: their lips on that fish or they were, but no.
- 31:54Speaker 5: Not going on a couple of years now, isn't it.
- 31:57Speaker 2: Do you know what's hilarious? Remember we were talking about
- 31:59Speaker 2: so I shouldn't I shouldn't say this about my kid,
- 32:02Speaker 2: but my older kid, my older boy, when we were
- 32:05Speaker 2: talking about remember we talking about getting that lie detector
- 32:08Speaker 2: test down here. So he kind of got in a
- 32:11Speaker 2: bunch He got in a bunch of trouble. Okay, he
- 32:15Speaker 2: was telling I shouldn't air in his laundry like this,
- 32:18Speaker 2: but he was telling his mom and dad a phib Okay,
- 32:21Speaker 2: so his mom phibbs to get the truth. She says,
- 32:25Speaker 2: I'm taking you down to the office because your dad
- 32:27Speaker 2: got that lie detector, So you tell me right now
- 32:31Speaker 2: what happened. And he's just like he just lets it
- 32:34Speaker 2: all out. And just the other night we like finally
- 32:38Speaker 2: it came up. We finally said no, there is no
- 32:39Speaker 2: lie Detector's.
- 32:44Speaker 5: That's good.
- 32:45Speaker 2: There was like lies to get him to tell the truth,
- 32:50Speaker 2: which is smart.
- 32:50Speaker 6: You know.
- 32:51Speaker 8: Get on you, Katie.
- 32:56Speaker 3: Let's see here.
- 32:57Speaker 2: You said you're giving soft babbles. What's an example of hardball?
- 33:00Speaker 3: This isn't a hard ball, but this one actually could
- 33:02Speaker 3: could open up to some discussion from Kyle. What do
- 33:04Speaker 3: y'all do about cleaning brain matter from a skull in
- 33:06Speaker 3: the field to transport to or from CWD areas across
- 33:11Speaker 3: a home county?
- 33:12Speaker 2: Stir it up with a screwdriver, Stir it up super
- 33:15Speaker 2: good with a screwdriver, and put a high pressure hose
- 33:17Speaker 2: in there.
- 33:18Speaker 5: Give it a few good shakes.
- 33:19Speaker 2: We know, Yeah, you give it a couple of shakes. Yeah,
- 33:22Speaker 2: there you go. It's it's like, you know, if you
- 33:24Speaker 2: stick with it, you can get that brain pan pretty clean.
- 33:27Speaker 2: Right on, this could what's a real hard question.
- 33:32Speaker 3: We haven't gotten really a really hard one yet, but
- 33:34Speaker 3: if you guys want to speak to this because I
- 33:36Speaker 3: don't think you ever really have, and I think you
- 33:38Speaker 3: guys could could talk thoughtfully about it. Question for Stephen Brody,
- 33:41Speaker 3: y'all post a lot of pictures of hunting fishing with
- 33:43Speaker 3: your kids, which is great. Have you ever thought about
- 33:45Speaker 3: making videos featuring your kids? My kids love watching other
- 33:49Speaker 3: kids hunting videos.
- 33:50Speaker 2: Man, I think about it all the time. I'd love
- 33:52Speaker 2: to do it, but me and my wife made a decision,
- 33:54Speaker 2: like if you noticed vir sea pictures of my kids,
- 33:56Speaker 2: we just had to find. We had to find, like
- 33:59Speaker 2: we had to make a rule for ourselves so that
- 34:02Speaker 2: it wasn't a question all the time about how much
- 34:04Speaker 2: exposure to give to our kids. And we eventually made
- 34:06Speaker 2: a rule. It seems arbitrary, but it works for us,
- 34:09Speaker 2: Like we don't show our kids' faces on stuff. It
- 34:12Speaker 2: seems goofy, but like wound up making it simple, you
- 34:15Speaker 2: know what I mean. In the other day, I even
- 34:17Speaker 2: asked my I would had a picture of my kids
- 34:19Speaker 2: when they were babies. And I said to my wife, like, hey,
- 34:22Speaker 2: do you mind if I post this thing when the
- 34:23Speaker 2: kids are babies that I mean, you know, they don't
- 34:25Speaker 2: look like that anymore? And she said, well, no, because
- 34:28Speaker 2: we have an agreement.
- 34:30Speaker 5: Yeah, you've done a good job of sticking to it.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I have. But it hurts because I'd love to
- 34:34Speaker 2: be able to make videos with them, but I don't
- 34:37Speaker 2: want to, like I do. I don't want to drag
- 34:40Speaker 2: them into something, you know, Like it's just hard for me,
- 34:43Speaker 2: Like I need them to get old enough to make
- 34:45Speaker 2: the decision.
- 34:45Speaker 5: There's also that like there's one thing, like making a
- 34:49Speaker 5: TV show or whatever is one thing, but then like
- 34:52Speaker 5: just making like videos, yeah, for yourself, Like we do
- 34:56Speaker 5: that all the time, but like making a show is
- 34:59Speaker 5: hard and it gets in the way, like it would
- 35:04Speaker 5: not that you couldn't do it.
- 35:05Speaker 8: But there's a great episode of Tony hunting Bear with
- 35:08Speaker 8: his daughter Austin if you want to check that out.
- 35:11Speaker 2: Yep, Hey, listen, I don't have any like I have.
- 35:16Speaker 2: I'm all for it. And a big thing that informed
- 35:19Speaker 2: us on it is years ago we had to have
- 35:22Speaker 2: like the FBI got involved, Like years ago, we had
- 35:25Speaker 2: something happen that alarmed us and they had to go
- 35:28Speaker 2: after a dude and like really went after a guy
- 35:31Speaker 2: hard about saying a comment, you know, about our kids.
- 35:35Speaker 2: And then from then on that changed our whole attitude. Man,
- 35:39Speaker 2: it was like someone like an animal rights dude, and
- 35:41Speaker 2: so it just it just spooked us, you know.
- 35:43Speaker 5: Yeah, well yeah, I mean I'd love to see us
- 35:46Speaker 5: make a show with some kids hunting, and it'd be
- 35:48Speaker 5: great if we do that at some point.
- 35:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I just didn't like the thought of some like
- 35:53Speaker 2: some animal rights freak or whoever targeting my kids because
- 35:57Speaker 2: it's something that they know about me. Is just like
- 35:59Speaker 2: upset and at times I'm just like a little I
- 36:02Speaker 2: feel a little like maybe overexposed in that way.
- 36:05Speaker 8: That's totally reasonable.
- 36:06Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll do one more here and save some words
- 36:09Speaker 3: for the end of the show. Sam's asking is there
- 36:11Speaker 3: any animal you were excited to hunt and eat but
- 36:13Speaker 3: were let down when you finally tried it, or any
- 36:15Speaker 3: animal that you thought that wasn't really worth it after
- 36:17Speaker 3: you tried it.
- 36:20Speaker 2: You made it name.
- 36:22Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, remember you guys shot those You guys
- 36:28Speaker 5: shot a bunch of those big old caribou several years ago.
- 36:32Speaker 5: Kenyan and Dura were there. Yeah. Yeah, I was a
- 36:35Speaker 5: little disappointed in the shanks with the because you think
- 36:38Speaker 5: about how many miles or in those shanks, Holy shit,
- 36:42Speaker 5: they take a long time to break down. Oh, multi
- 36:45Speaker 5: day breaks, and just the meat in general. It's not
- 36:48Speaker 5: that it's bad, it's just you stack it up against
- 36:51Speaker 5: like elk or it's just not No.
- 36:54Speaker 2: I'd rather I'd wait, rather eat Muldier than cava. Yeah,
- 36:57Speaker 2: I'll tell you. One of the ones that was most
- 36:58Speaker 2: disappointing to me is while back we flayed I really
- 37:03Speaker 2: wish we had we played a bunch of shovel nose sturgeon.
- 37:05Speaker 5: I remember you talking about that.
- 37:07Speaker 2: Yeah, because one the yield is so low, so you
- 37:11Speaker 2: kind of get this cool looking fish, you clean him,
- 37:13Speaker 2: and you don't have ship, and then what you do
- 37:16Speaker 2: have doesn't taste that good. I've never laid a finger
- 37:18Speaker 2: on now. It just pop them off, you know. Just
- 37:21Speaker 2: a real disappointment because the the the low yield was
- 37:26Speaker 2: already enough to turn me off, but then the taste was.
- 37:29Speaker 5: Another one for me was Jack Rabbits, There no no
- 37:36Speaker 5: go ahead and each his own.
- 37:38Speaker 2: You have dumb opinions, free country cool.
- 37:41Speaker 3: If you want to get to the pike, we've got
- 37:43Speaker 3: Parker waiting in the in the green room.
- 37:45Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Brod, you want to handle this interview?
- 37:48Speaker 5: Sure?
- 37:50Speaker 2: Yeah, Brody's an invasive pike expert. He used to live
- 37:54Speaker 2: at an invasive pipe pod.
- 37:55Speaker 5: Oh yeah, I love those things.
- 38:00Speaker 6: Are we there?
- 38:01Speaker 3: Yeah, there's Parker.
- 38:02Speaker 5: Hey Parker, how's it going?
- 38:04Speaker 6: Hey, good Harry, y'all doing great?
- 38:06Speaker 5: Is it cold up there?
- 38:09Speaker 12: You know, it's the coldest day we've had this winter
- 38:11Speaker 12: so far, about minus fifteen.
- 38:13Speaker 5: Where are you at right now?
- 38:15Speaker 6: I'm in Palmer, so about our north of Anchorage.
- 38:18Speaker 5: Yep, yep, yep. Cool. So we'll get to the pike
- 38:22Speaker 5: in a second. But you want to give us a
- 38:24Speaker 5: rundown of what you do for a fishing game, like
- 38:27Speaker 5: what you're Yeah, sure.
- 38:30Speaker 12: So I'm a fisheries biologist with the Alaska Department of
- 38:33Speaker 12: Fishing Game and my job is primarily focused on invasive
- 38:36Speaker 12: species in this region. That's primarily invasive Northern Pike, but
- 38:42Speaker 12: that could be. You know, we've dealt with the host
- 38:44Speaker 12: of other several species that have turned up here that
- 38:47Speaker 12: shouldn't be here and we handle that.
- 38:50Speaker 5: Cool.
- 38:52Speaker 2: So, hey, Brody, while you're interviewing him, can you ask
- 38:55Speaker 2: if he knows my brother Danny.
- 38:57Speaker 5: So there's this guy Danny Bolton and Anchorage Danny Bolton.
- 39:03Speaker 5: There's this guy Danny Runella. You know him down at
- 39:06Speaker 5: Anchorage did you know these guys know each other?
- 39:10Speaker 2: Maybe I knew they knew each other, but I'm not
- 39:12Speaker 2: positive they knew each other. Yeah, he's my brother's a
- 39:15Speaker 2: fisheries biologist. I thought maybe you guys ran neto each other.
- 39:17Speaker 2: Continue the interview.
- 39:18Speaker 12: Yeah, it's a small world in the fisheries biology realm
- 39:21Speaker 12: up here.
- 39:22Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, So this study came out, some people may
- 39:26Speaker 5: have seen it in the news. That's where I found it,
- 39:30Speaker 5: and we had talked about it like in the past
- 39:32Speaker 5: recently here at media. But can you kind of give
- 39:36Speaker 5: like the basic rundown of what this study found and
- 39:39Speaker 5: how they they were able to come to the conclusion
- 39:44Speaker 5: that they came to.
- 39:46Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, you bet so.
- 39:48Speaker 12: Quick background for your listeners. Pike are actually native to
- 39:52Speaker 12: a majority of Alaska, more than northern and western regions.
- 39:56Speaker 12: But they were introduced here to the south central region
- 40:00Speaker 12: waters that flow into cook Inlet Gulf of Alaska. They
- 40:03Speaker 12: were introduced by a person in the nineteen fifties and
- 40:06Speaker 12: they've spread to you know, over one hundred water bodies
- 40:09Speaker 12: in this region since then. But you know, so we're
- 40:12Speaker 12: trying to keep tabs on where these pike are spreading
- 40:14Speaker 12: in the region and we've been doing eradication projects on
- 40:20Speaker 12: the Kena Peninsula.
- 40:22Speaker 5: What does that entail, Like, how are you trying to
- 40:24Speaker 5: get rid of them? Because like, yeah, I used to
- 40:28Speaker 5: live in an area in Colorado where they were doing that.
- 40:30Speaker 5: They're trying to get rid of them on the Yampa River,
- 40:33Speaker 5: and they'd knock them back, then they'd come back. They'd
- 40:36Speaker 5: knock them back, then they'd come back. It's like just
- 40:38Speaker 5: an ongoing They can never seem to like eradicate.
- 40:42Speaker 12: Them, right, So it's it's kind of tough to get
- 40:46Speaker 12: over that hump. But a lot of what we do
- 40:48Speaker 12: is aggressive netting, and that's called suppression projects, where we
- 40:51Speaker 12: just try to kill as many as we can. But
- 40:54Speaker 12: if we actually want to eradicate them, then we often
- 40:57Speaker 12: go and use a chemical called rotino. It's a fish
- 41:00Speaker 12: management tool that you know is used across the US,
- 41:03Speaker 12: and that's what we've done heavily on the Kina to
- 41:07Speaker 12: eradicate him from there. But netting is often very common,
- 41:10Speaker 12: and like you're saying, it's tough to get ahead.
- 41:13Speaker 5: Of them, yep. So so back back to the study.
- 41:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I saw a question just pop up. How are
- 41:20Speaker 2: the pikes spreading?
- 41:21Speaker 5: Yep?
- 41:22Speaker 2: Someone asked that he's in luck.
- 41:25Speaker 5: We're about to find out.
- 41:26Speaker 12: So they're spreading, well really two mechanisms. Now that they're
- 41:30Speaker 12: in this region, people still move them around. We have
- 41:33Speaker 12: documentation of that. And then you know, once they're in
- 41:36Speaker 12: an open system, they're free to swim where they want, right.
- 41:40Speaker 12: And so one thing that we thought was some of
- 41:43Speaker 12: these rivers flowing into cook Inlet, which is brackish water.
- 41:47Speaker 6: We thought that was most likely.
- 41:52Speaker 5: That's a nice one.
- 41:54Speaker 12: But we had some pike that showed up in a
- 41:56Speaker 12: remote place on the Kena Peninsula that it we don't
- 42:00Speaker 12: know how they got there. Didn't make sense for someone
- 42:03Speaker 12: to go through an extensive effort to get them to
- 42:05Speaker 12: this remote place, but it has a very short connection
- 42:08Speaker 12: to cook Inlet. And so one thing that we did
- 42:11Speaker 12: we wanted to explore if we're going to invest money
- 42:13Speaker 12: into getting rid of these pike from this drainage, we
- 42:15Speaker 12: want to know how they got there and prevent that
- 42:17Speaker 12: from happening again. So we did some sampling in this lake,
- 42:22Speaker 12: Vogel Lake, and we caught one really large female along
- 42:27Speaker 12: with a handful of other smaller pike. And one thing
- 42:30Speaker 12: that's a really neat technology in the world of fisheries
- 42:33Speaker 12: is the odalith of the fish.
- 42:35Speaker 6: So that's the.
- 42:36Speaker 12: Inner earbone calcified structure. Biologists used that often for aging fish.
- 42:41Speaker 12: There's a good picture of it there, but what it
- 42:44Speaker 12: also can be used for. It's basically a chemical fingerprint
- 42:48Speaker 12: of the water that that fish has lived in throughout
- 42:50Speaker 12: its life. So you can cut that otlith in half
- 42:54Speaker 12: and it grows, you know, on the outside, cal calcium
- 42:58Speaker 12: building up on the outside as it grows. If you
- 43:01Speaker 12: cut that in half, you expose the core when that
- 43:03Speaker 12: fish was born, and then the edge represents when you
- 43:07Speaker 12: kill that fish. So we can send this otolith to
- 43:10Speaker 12: a lab. We have one in Fairbanks that does this.
- 43:13Speaker 12: They look at the chemical composition of that otolith from
- 43:16Speaker 12: birth to death. And what's interesting is water bodies often
- 43:20Speaker 12: have unique chemical signatures, specifically with stronium isotopes, and that's
- 43:25Speaker 12: what we're looking at. So the marine environment has a
- 43:28Speaker 12: pretty particular strownium isotope signature. And so we took the
- 43:34Speaker 12: otolith from that really large pike and measure the stronium
- 43:38Speaker 12: from birth to death of that fish. And what we
- 43:40Speaker 12: found is that the center of that otolith where that
- 43:43Speaker 12: fish was born did not match the water that we
- 43:46Speaker 12: caught it in. Then about two years of age, it
- 43:50Speaker 12: had a signature signature consistent with being in a marine environment,
- 43:56Speaker 12: and then the signature matched.
- 43:58Speaker 6: The water that we caught that fish in. So basically
- 44:00Speaker 6: what that told us is that.
- 44:01Speaker 12: Fish came from somewhere else, swam through the brackish water
- 44:05Speaker 12: and then ended up in this Vogel lake here where
- 44:08Speaker 12: we caught it. And once we kind of had proof
- 44:12Speaker 12: of that occurring, we got suspicious of this happening in
- 44:15Speaker 12: other places.
- 44:16Speaker 6: For example, and Anchorage.
- 44:18Speaker 12: We have a couple of lakes where we thought this
- 44:19Speaker 12: might have occurred, and indeed we did catch a couple
- 44:22Speaker 12: of pike that had these signatures as well. And so
- 44:27Speaker 12: that's what this study was kind of based on these
- 44:29Speaker 12: three different populations that we think got established by pike
- 44:33Speaker 12: swimming through the marine environment mostly just brackish water, not
- 44:37Speaker 12: full salt water.
- 44:38Speaker 2: So they're able to make those trips, That's what you
- 44:41Speaker 2: just kind of answer my question as you finished your
- 44:44Speaker 2: last response. But they're able to make those trips just
- 44:48Speaker 2: staying in brackish water, Like like, how long do you
- 44:53Speaker 2: think one could last and open salt or do you
- 44:55Speaker 2: think that would kill.
- 44:56Speaker 6: It, so I think that would kill it.
- 44:59Speaker 12: We a couple of years ago we did a salinity
- 45:01Speaker 12: trial where we actually put pike in known salinity tots
- 45:05Speaker 12: and measured to see how long they would live. And
- 45:09Speaker 12: so we tested various gradients and our highest concentration we
- 45:14Speaker 12: tested was about twenty eight parts per thousand. For reference,
- 45:18Speaker 12: about thirty five is considered fully marine, and at twenty
- 45:22Speaker 12: eight they lived maybe like seven or eight hours on
- 45:24Speaker 12: the average. They can't tolerate fully marine waters and for
- 45:30Speaker 12: very long, but that lower brackish concentration around seven or ten.
- 45:35Speaker 12: There's actually a pike population in the Baltic Sea that
- 45:39Speaker 12: they just lived there, and that's at about seven parts
- 45:42Speaker 12: per thousand. So the fact that they can kind of
- 45:45Speaker 12: traverse through some of this low brackish water is not
- 45:48Speaker 12: that surprising. But you know, cook Inlet it's a pretty
- 45:51Speaker 12: hostile environment. We have some of the largest tides in
- 45:54Speaker 12: the world, like thirty foot tide swings very glacially turbid.
- 45:59Speaker 12: We got big glacial rivers that are pumping into it,
- 46:02Speaker 12: so visibility is poor, really strong current, so it's you know,
- 46:06Speaker 12: not what you would think of when you think of
- 46:08Speaker 12: where pike would typically live, so it's you know, they
- 46:11Speaker 12: can live just probably for a little bit in this environment.
- 46:14Speaker 5: Are are they traveling or are you able to determine
- 46:17Speaker 5: like how far they're traveling, Like does this only happen
- 46:20Speaker 5: where like two river estuaries are pretty close together, or
- 46:26Speaker 5: are they yeah distance.
- 46:28Speaker 12: We can't tell exactly where they came from. The most
- 46:31Speaker 12: likely source is this is sit in a river and
- 46:35Speaker 12: if that's the case, you know Vogel Lake where one
- 46:39Speaker 12: of these studies was based on, that's about eighteen miles
- 46:43Speaker 12: if the fish was to swim perfectly straight, you know,
- 46:46Speaker 12: from anchorage. If it made the trip from this is Sittina,
- 46:48Speaker 12: that's like fifteen miles, so not really that far. And
- 46:52Speaker 12: we think a lot of this movement's likely limited to
- 46:55Speaker 12: the upper part of cook Inlet to where we have
- 46:57Speaker 12: these you know, brackish waters.
- 46:59Speaker 6: As you south, it gets.
- 47:01Speaker 12: Pretty fully marine pretty quick, So I think this is
- 47:03Speaker 12: just happening kind of an upper Cooking like region.
- 47:08Speaker 2: Years ago, I was talking to a researcher who was
- 47:11Speaker 2: looking at trying to explore the question of how bad
- 47:14Speaker 2: could the Burmese python situation get, so they would take
- 47:18Speaker 2: Burmese pythons and move north of the Florida Everglades and
- 47:23Speaker 2: make these enclosures just to see like what there, At
- 47:26Speaker 2: what point would they not be able to survive anymore?
- 47:29Speaker 2: And they were kind of able to draw a sort
- 47:30Speaker 2: of a sort of line saying what they projected to
- 47:35Speaker 2: be the extent of the spread for for average temperature purposes.
- 47:41Speaker 2: Right when you guys look at this, now that you're
- 47:44Speaker 2: understanding that these pike are moving not just from people
- 47:47Speaker 2: moving them in buckets, but they're moving on their own
- 47:49Speaker 2: into unexpected areas, do you have a sense of, like
- 47:54Speaker 2: of how bad it could get or do you think
- 47:57Speaker 2: you already looking at the extent of what they could
- 47:59Speaker 2: possibly do for as they spread into these waters? And
- 48:02Speaker 2: I think within that I think we didn't cover on
- 48:04Speaker 2: just I don't mean to lay too much on you
- 48:06Speaker 2: at once, but you should probably speak to what this
- 48:09Speaker 2: could mean for salmon, right because that's what we're really
- 48:11Speaker 2: talking about here, right.
- 48:13Speaker 12: Yeah, yeah, exactly, So we we know how bad it
- 48:16Speaker 12: can get, but it all depends really on the specific
- 48:19Speaker 12: habitat of a location. You know, if you're a pike angler,
- 48:23Speaker 12: you know what pike habitat looks like.
- 48:25Speaker 6: You know where you.
- 48:26Speaker 12: Target them and in the Sassiina Valley, we've you know,
- 48:30Speaker 12: almost complete expansion through all available habitat. But what's at
- 48:35Speaker 12: risk here is the Kena Peninsula for sure, the northern
- 48:38Speaker 12: portion at least, and there is some tremendously good well
- 48:43Speaker 12: salmon habitat currently, but it would make for very good
- 48:47Speaker 12: pike habitat.
- 48:47Speaker 6: And that's what we're nervous about.
- 48:49Speaker 12: There's some locations that if Pike got into it would
- 48:52Speaker 12: be completely devastating, you know, completely wipe out salmon because
- 48:58Speaker 12: of the type of habitat in that citystem would favor
- 49:01Speaker 12: pike in an apex predator like that.
- 49:04Speaker 2: Does it seem like there's does it seem inevitable or
- 49:08Speaker 2: does it seem like there's something that there's a move
- 49:12Speaker 2: you guys that will have at your disposal.
- 49:16Speaker 12: You know it's with enough time, it's likely inevitable. Now
- 49:19Speaker 12: we're taking some preventative measures. In that Vogel Lake that
- 49:24Speaker 12: I mentioned. We eradicated pike from there in twenty twenty one,
- 49:28Speaker 12: and what we have now is a weir in place
- 49:31Speaker 12: near the mouth of that drainage preventing pike from moving
- 49:37Speaker 12: up through.
- 49:37Speaker 6: Cooking let through that pathway.
- 49:39Speaker 12: So you know, so we're taking prevention measures there, but
- 49:42Speaker 12: some of these other locations, you know, we're kind of
- 49:45Speaker 12: exploring options. We really want to dial in. How frequently
- 49:50Speaker 12: is this occurring.
- 49:51Speaker 6: We don't know.
- 49:52Speaker 12: It seems to occur frequently enough that pike can establish
- 49:56Speaker 12: a population. So a male and a female get into
- 49:59Speaker 12: a system and fawn and kind of game over. So
- 50:03Speaker 12: but we don't know exactly. We don't know really what
- 50:06Speaker 12: the exact salinity concentrations or trends are in cook inlet.
- 50:10Speaker 12: We need to figure that out to actually find what
- 50:13Speaker 12: we think would be the boundary of how far south
- 50:15Speaker 12: they can go. So once we kind of do that,
- 50:18Speaker 12: we can prioritize, you know, monitoring and prevention measures.
- 50:23Speaker 5: Man, just just to play Devil's advocate there, I think
- 50:29Speaker 5: there would be some people that might say, if these
- 50:33Speaker 5: things are traveling on their own into these area, they're
- 50:37Speaker 5: not getting No one's dumping a bucket a pike into
- 50:40Speaker 5: a lake, right if they're doing it on their own, Like,
- 50:43Speaker 5: are they still considered an invasive species?
- 50:47Speaker 12: Yeah, So that's a really good question. Short answer is yes,
- 50:51Speaker 12: because they wouldn't be spreading if it wasn't for an
- 50:53Speaker 12: initial human introduction. There's still a lot native to the area,
- 50:57Speaker 12: so to be invasive, have to be non native and
- 51:01Speaker 12: you know, causing harm.
- 51:03Speaker 6: Uh.
- 51:03Speaker 12: You know, a good example of that would be like
- 51:05Speaker 12: the Asian carp throughout the Midwest. If they got established
- 51:08Speaker 12: in the Great Lakes, you wouldn't consider them native because
- 51:11Speaker 12: they swim there on their own.
- 51:13Speaker 6: Right.
- 51:13Speaker 5: So the other kind of the other part of that
- 51:17Speaker 5: that question is, at least down here, you'll have these
- 51:21Speaker 5: situations where like pike or smallmouth bass or some other
- 51:25Speaker 5: non native game fish will get introduced into a system,
- 51:30Speaker 5: and often there'll be like a contingent of anglers that
- 51:34Speaker 5: are like, we don't want these things gone. They're great, right, yeah,
- 51:39Speaker 5: what I mean, you know, there's there's so many examples
- 51:43Speaker 5: down here. I would imagine in Alaska maybe because of
- 51:47Speaker 5: how important salmon are that there's not really that kind
- 51:52Speaker 5: of pushback like for for recreational and subsistence anglers saying, oh,
- 51:58Speaker 5: you know, they're not so bad.
- 52:02Speaker 6: Well, we we do get that.
- 52:04Speaker 12: There's definitely a following of pike anglers here that want
- 52:08Speaker 12: the pike to be here, you know, move them around. Uh,
- 52:11Speaker 12: that's that's why they were introduced here in the first place, right,
- 52:14Speaker 12: Somebody wanting to fish for pike. So we have that,
- 52:16Speaker 12: but it is still you know, your average you know,
- 52:19Speaker 12: Alaskan overwhelming majority understands what's going on and would much
- 52:24Speaker 12: prefer the salmon you know over a pike fishery. Yep,
- 52:29Speaker 12: it only takes a couple of bad apples to really,
- 52:32Speaker 12: you know, create a situation like what we have.
- 52:35Speaker 5: Is this like a super high priority problem now for
- 52:39Speaker 5: for Alaska fishing game?
- 52:41Speaker 6: It is?
- 52:42Speaker 12: This is this is probably the most devastating aquatic and
- 52:45Speaker 12: vasive species we have in this region. You know, there's
- 52:48Speaker 12: several others that we're dealing with, but I mean, for
- 52:51Speaker 12: the pike. We've documented about twenty five percent of our
- 52:56Speaker 12: anagamous lakes on a surface area basis completely destroyed from pike.
- 53:01Speaker 12: Twenty five percent and this is where samuel rearing and
- 53:05Speaker 12: growing before they out mak rate, and then another good
- 53:08Speaker 12: fifteen percent are in pretty dire straight So significant a
- 53:12Speaker 12: portion of habitat in this region is being impacted by pike.
- 53:17Speaker 12: But there's there's other species on the horizon that we
- 53:20Speaker 12: don't want here and we're working to prevent those as well.
- 53:23Speaker 5: Have you guys implemented like cat mandatory catch and kill
- 53:26Speaker 5: regulations and places we.
- 53:30Speaker 12: Have in this entire region. If you catch a pike,
- 53:32Speaker 12: you're required to kill it. You can kill it and
- 53:36Speaker 12: tooss it back or keep it if you want, but
- 53:39Speaker 12: you can't release it alive.
- 53:40Speaker 6: Legally.
- 53:41Speaker 2: You can kill it pickle it though, yep, yep.
- 53:44Speaker 6: Kill and pickle it, and I would recommend that they're
- 53:46Speaker 6: pretty good pickled.
- 53:47Speaker 5: Well, thanks for chatting with us today, Parker. That was
- 53:50Speaker 5: that was real informative.
- 53:51Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for coming on, man, and I hope you
- 53:54Speaker 2: guys have some success with that, because you know, the
- 54:00Speaker 2: world's gonna start no matter where you go. The world's
- 54:02Speaker 2: gonna become at risk of looking the same no matter
- 54:04Speaker 2: where you go. You know, crows and northern pike. Thanks man,
- 54:09Speaker 2: appreciate it all right.
- 54:11Speaker 6: Thanks, appreciate it all right.
- 54:15Speaker 2: Are you allowed to go out of order?
- 54:18Speaker 3: You know there there are no rules. It's just a suggestion.
- 54:22Speaker 2: Can we do two questions then do the photo thing?
- 54:24Speaker 2: And because I saw two two questions, yeah, go for it.
- 54:27Speaker 2: Someone asked about making venice and demigloss.
- 54:29Speaker 8: Oh I saw that one.
- 54:30Speaker 2: Absolute.
- 54:31Speaker 8: Just make sure you leave some meat on the bones
- 54:34Speaker 8: because it's a little lean.
- 54:35Speaker 5: If you don't, you.
- 54:36Speaker 2: Get a real blonde.
- 54:37Speaker 5: If you you got to commit to the time involved, man,
- 54:41Speaker 5: but it's so worth it.
- 54:42Speaker 2: Yeah, you got to commit to the time being involved.
- 54:44Speaker 2: Then you got to commit to later trying to get
- 54:46Speaker 2: that ring off your pot, because you're going to have
- 54:49Speaker 2: a ring of like something that looks like it would
- 54:51Speaker 2: have an industrial application, like a ring of sort of
- 54:55Speaker 2: like a POxy that forms. But you got to cook
- 54:58Speaker 2: it down to I mean picture that you're cooking it
- 55:01Speaker 2: down and cooking it down to the point where it's
- 55:03Speaker 2: like it's the consistency of cold maple syrup. Like when
- 55:08Speaker 2: you lay the back of a spoon in it and
- 55:09Speaker 2: lift it up. It's it's uh, it'll stick to that spoon,
- 55:15Speaker 2: you know. And then I'll put it into ice cube trays.
- 55:17Speaker 5: That's what I do because it's powerful. Throw one ice
- 55:21Speaker 5: cub worth and it's like a pine of stock.
- 55:23Speaker 2: Yeah. But then later when you're having your supper, I'll
- 55:26Speaker 2: take maybe like two parts butter, one part demiglass, a
- 55:31Speaker 2: little booze or a little wine or something. Yeah. Yeah, no,
- 55:35Speaker 2: it works, good man, it works good.
- 55:37Speaker 5: I like that you said supper, not enough people still
- 55:39Speaker 5: call it supper, dude.
- 55:40Speaker 2: I remember it was so funny as I remember when
- 55:43Speaker 2: I went to graduate school, Okay, graduate school, I remember
- 55:47Speaker 2: making a conscious decision to stop saying something. Nobody said supper,
- 55:53Speaker 2: nobody said suffer.
- 55:54Speaker 3: Yeah, that's not it. That's not a West Coast thing.
- 55:57Speaker 2: I remember being like, man, how come these guys no
- 56:00Speaker 2: one says that's what? I switched to dinner? Yeah, yeah,
- 56:03Speaker 2: I hate it. I hate it about myself now, but
- 56:05Speaker 2: I like consciously switched to dinner. So I thought it
- 56:08Speaker 2: made me. I was like, these guys don't know what
- 56:10Speaker 2: supper is. Oh, there's another question, Yeah, someone asked. I
- 56:15Speaker 2: saw a comment come up where there's a there's a
- 56:18Speaker 2: host Forrest Gallant, who oh yeah, is that true that
- 56:21Speaker 2: he said that?
- 56:23Speaker 3: I couldn't tell you.
- 56:23Speaker 2: I can look it up though, says that he said
- 56:25Speaker 2: you shouldn't be able to hunt bears because it's trophy hunting.
- 56:28Speaker 2: M you know, you know what, here's a good thing
- 56:33Speaker 2: to go look at. There's about a guy, yeah, talked
- 56:39Speaker 2: about that bear that fell out of the man while
- 56:41Speaker 2: hunting in Virginia. So a guy was hunting Virginia and
- 56:44Speaker 2: they treat a bear. There's a tragedy. They treat a bear.
- 56:47Speaker 2: And we discussed this, so they treat a bear. Someone
- 56:51Speaker 2: shot the bear. A guy's dog got under and he
- 56:54Speaker 2: thought the bear was gonna land on the dog. He
- 56:55Speaker 2: went there to try to save his dog got hit
- 56:57Speaker 2: by the bear and it killed him. So naturally it
- 57:01Speaker 2: brings out all this commentary like oh he deserved it,
- 57:04Speaker 2: you know, and all this terrible stuff.
- 57:05Speaker 8: Everybody's pretty nasty.
- 57:07Speaker 5: I don't understand what trophy hunting has to do, like
- 57:10Speaker 5: it's just like.
- 57:11Speaker 2: It's yeah, I mean like bears are great to eat. Yeah,
- 57:13Speaker 2: I don't get it, Like like I killed deer and
- 57:16Speaker 2: I have their I have deer skulls all over my damn.
- 57:18Speaker 3: I don't know how true that is because I'm finding
- 57:20Speaker 3: for he's put he has videos of himself hunting bears online,
- 57:23Speaker 3: so I don't I don't know where that.
- 57:25Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what I was wondering about it.
- 57:26Speaker 3: Maybe he had a change of heart. I don't know.
- 57:28Speaker 2: I was wondering, but I don't know. But but either way,
- 57:30Speaker 2: you know, what's a great line one of my there's
- 57:33Speaker 2: a Boone biography by Farreger mac Farreger, and then and
- 57:38Speaker 2: in the Boone Byer, if you by mac Ferreger, he's
- 57:40Speaker 2: talking about Venison and in uh venison and bear meat,
- 57:44Speaker 2: and he says that on the American Frontier, bear meat
- 57:49Speaker 2: was for eating. Yeah, you shot deer, You shot deer
- 57:53Speaker 2: for leather, and when you got hunger, you shot bears.
- 57:56Speaker 5: Yeah. Anyone who's ever eating a good all black bear
- 58:01Speaker 5: should try it.
- 58:02Speaker 8: Oh man, it's fatty and delicious. It's that's awesome.
- 58:07Speaker 2: And you know, everything's got a trophy, man.
- 58:09Speaker 5: Yeah, some weasels.
- 58:12Speaker 2: Weasels got a little trophy.
- 58:15Speaker 3: People are saying that he said it on his most
- 58:16Speaker 3: recent podcast, but I haven't heard that. I can't speak
- 58:18Speaker 3: to that. I don't think any any any of us
- 58:20Speaker 3: can right now.
- 58:21Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a weird. It's a odd like you'd have
- 58:23Speaker 2: to really, you'd have to stay up for a few
- 58:26Speaker 2: days to find a way to justify that.
- 58:28Speaker 5: Yeah, and you still wouldn't.
- 58:32Speaker 2: How do we do the fishing trip thing?
- 58:34Speaker 8: Uh?
- 58:35Speaker 3: You say? Our next segment is called meat Eater Top Threes.
- 58:38Speaker 2: Our next segments called me the top threes.
- 58:41Speaker 5: Phil Oh, okay.
- 58:44Speaker 7: Don't forget about this, brony.
- 58:47Speaker 5: Well, yeah, I was waiting on these musical transitions. I
- 58:50Speaker 5: hadn't heard one yet.
- 58:53Speaker 2: It's grateful, but really good Bill.
- 59:02Speaker 3: Thanks appreciate it. And then yeah, Steve, if you look
- 59:09Speaker 3: at the script, then it's you. You continue a little
- 59:11Speaker 3: bit more and say, this week we are ranking our
- 59:13Speaker 3: three favorite fishing trips.
- 59:14Speaker 2: So naturally, this week we're ranking our three favorite fishing trips. Maggie,
- 59:19Speaker 2: you go first. What's your third most favorite memorable fishing trip.
- 59:25Speaker 8: So this was a fun trip down in Florida and
- 59:28Speaker 8: the golf. My my folks had just retired and they
- 59:33Speaker 8: spent three months airbnb hopping in Florida. Oh, they like
- 59:38Speaker 8: drove down with their lake boat and they had their
- 59:41Speaker 8: old town canoe on top of the truck. My mom
- 59:44Speaker 8: was like, we look like Beverly Hill Billy's going down here.
- 59:47Speaker 8: So I flew down there and hung out with them.
- 59:50Speaker 8: My dad and I went out with a guide for
- 59:52Speaker 8: a day and.
- 59:53Speaker 2: Then well then here you are in the canoe.
- 59:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 59:54Speaker 8: We just took the canoe out and the mangroves. We
- 59:57Speaker 8: had a little trolling motor. We would u we would
- 1:00:00Speaker 8: paddle around some fly casting was kind of difficult, but uh,
- 1:00:05Speaker 8: you know, spin and gear. I'd never caught red fish before.
- 1:00:08Speaker 8: They're super fun fish to catch.
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: And that's your old man in the canoe.
- 1:00:11Speaker 8: That's my dad. Yeah, he's he's big on sun protection
- 1:00:15Speaker 8: and man, red fish on the half shell, Holy cow,
- 1:00:19Speaker 8: that's a great fish to eat. I didn't really know
- 1:00:23Speaker 8: what the half shell thing meant. But when you cook
- 1:00:25Speaker 8: them up like that, it.
- 1:00:27Speaker 5: Hardens up and it's scales.
- 1:00:30Speaker 8: It's almost like chunks of crab out of there. Is amazing.
- 1:00:34Speaker 8: I actually I just cooked up that red fish he
- 1:00:36Speaker 8: gave me this summer after. It was delicious fish. I
- 1:00:41Speaker 8: didn't know you gave that fish to me.
- 1:00:43Speaker 5: You can do that same thing with northern pike, yeah, can.
- 1:00:48Speaker 8: Man, you're gonna have to catch something.
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: Cook northern you leave the scales on.
- 1:00:53Speaker 8: You can do that and it forms that delicious slime
- 1:00:56Speaker 8: scrape and you get down to man, you're not going
- 1:00:59Speaker 8: to eat the skin.
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: Oh you know a trick on d slimemen. Those suckers
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: you ever put them in salt? From minute that ship
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: comes off.
- 1:01:05Speaker 5: It's amazing how they keep producing it for.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: Where's it coming from?
- 1:01:11Speaker 6: All right?
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: Number two?
- 1:01:14Speaker 8: I think we all do.
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: I'm we're going to do Brodie's Number three.
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: Oh well, this canna take forever.
- 1:01:19Speaker 8: I tried to go fast.
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: It's nine things to talk about.
- 1:01:22Speaker 5: This is tough for me. Man, I've had a lot
- 1:01:24Speaker 5: of good things. I kind of concentrated on family trips
- 1:01:30Speaker 5: because they're the most fun these days. Uh, this is
- 1:01:33Speaker 5: every couple of years. Uh, I got to go on
- 1:01:36Speaker 5: this vacation where my wife's family gets together for a
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: family reunion down south, and it's kind of vacation where
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: people spend half the day on the beach and half
- 1:01:47Speaker 5: the day at the pool. And that that is tough
- 1:01:51Speaker 5: for me. So I always try and squeeze some fishing,
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: and uh, we got into some that first picture, we
- 1:01:57Speaker 5: got into some dorado and kobea a few my I
- 1:02:00Speaker 5: was out, And then the next picture we really got
- 1:02:03Speaker 5: into this speckled trout and white trout back in the sound,
- 1:02:07Speaker 5: and uh, it was just a great trip.
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: Love it.
- 1:02:12Speaker 8: Did you gaff that thing while you had it on
- 1:02:13Speaker 8: the fly?
- 1:02:15Speaker 5: The guy we're fishing with a guide we know down
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: there and he threw that gaff. He did the gaffing.
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it was my number three. Oh. I was
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: just here here, I'm holding the triple tail. I shot
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: with a spear gun. But this is just a placeholder.
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: For the last bunch of years, handful of years I've
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: been going down and diving, uh, spearfishing the oil rigs
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: and the golf of Mexico, and uh, that's become not
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: my most favorite, but a favorite thing of mine to
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: go do is do the oil rigs and uh with
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: that triple tail. It's funny because you have all this
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: murky brackish water that floats up top, and then you
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: have this little band of clear water. So let's say
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: it's thirty feet deep. You'll have like twelve feet of
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: muck that's on top. Then you'll have a four or
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: five foot band of water you can see, and then
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: you got all the bottom muck. And they call it
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: like the center of the oreo, and you hunt the
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: center of the oreo. And it's funny because like fish
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: going to the center of the oreo, and this this
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: oreole center was about big enough for a person to
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: lay horizontal in it. I'm not kidding you. It's like
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: a very narrow window of clear water. And I go
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: down and I find that narrow window of clear water
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: and I look and there's that sun bitch of tripletail
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: sitting there. And the last thing he thought was someone's
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: gonna shoot it.
- 1:03:33Speaker 5: You know, they lay sideways under like palettes and shit like,
- 1:03:36Speaker 5: yeah he was.
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: He was upright in the rig, upright in the rig,
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: and I walked up to him like I was walking
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: up to you, you know, in no country for old man.
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: When he gets the cop with that captive bolt gun. Yep,
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: that was me and that fish.
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: That's a big triple tail.
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: Okay, I'm done.
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: Maggie's number two, my number two.
- 1:03:58Speaker 8: This is uh cool mountain fishing trip right in my
- 1:04:02Speaker 8: backyard and the winds went up there with my boyfriend.
- 1:04:06Speaker 8: This is actually a very memorable fishing trip from a
- 1:04:10Speaker 8: dumb mistake I made, which I'll get to.
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: But uh so where is this, Maggie?
- 1:04:13Speaker 8: Sorry, this is in the Winds.
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: I don't know where that is.
- 1:04:17Speaker 8: It is the wind River Range in Wyoming.
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: Ah, gotcha, this is the lingo. I'm not privy too,
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: thank you.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:04:25Speaker 8: So we went in I think about sixteen or seventeen
- 1:04:30Speaker 8: miles one day and we sort of just made a
- 1:04:33Speaker 8: big loop and fished our way around for a week
- 1:04:36Speaker 8: and came out another trailhead. It was awesome. My old
- 1:04:40Speaker 8: dog he was I think eleven there and he was
- 1:04:43Speaker 8: a trooper came the whole time. We uh yeah, caught cuddies, Brookies.
- 1:04:48Speaker 8: It was just a really great trip. I brought this
- 1:04:52Speaker 8: little packet of like curry paste up with me. It
- 1:04:55Speaker 8: was like a single use packet and cooking fish over
- 1:04:58Speaker 8: the fire with some cur repast in the middle. Like
- 1:05:01Speaker 8: maybe you're just backcountry hungry, but holy moly, it was delicious.
- 1:05:07Speaker 8: It was he like, didn't need butter anything. It was
- 1:05:10Speaker 8: really good. So the last day are it rained so
- 1:05:16Speaker 8: hard our our tent. It was like slapping a bag
- 1:05:20Speaker 8: of wind if you ever did that in your youthful days. Uh.
- 1:05:24Speaker 8: So it rained harder than I'd ever seen it rain
- 1:05:27Speaker 8: in the winds. And we're walking out and I'm just
- 1:05:30Speaker 8: popping along, thinking about a cheeseburger and a cold beer
- 1:05:33Speaker 8: at the burger bar, and uh, you know, we're off
- 1:05:36Speaker 8: trail because there's a bunch of trees down and stuff.
- 1:05:38Speaker 8: And I just took one bad step and uh there's
- 1:05:43Speaker 8: a lot of swearing involved.
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: Looks like you took a bad step and got hit
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: by a truck.
- 1:05:47Speaker 8: Was like, uh, you know, he was like, oh, I'll
- 1:05:51Speaker 8: just set up the tent. I'll leave you here. You know,
- 1:05:53Speaker 8: I'll go get some horses and come back and get you.
- 1:05:56Speaker 8: And I was so mad, I was, I'm walking out
- 1:05:59Speaker 8: of here. Got so I walked out nine miles on
- 1:06:04Speaker 8: a broken ankle, and I've got a plate and seven
- 1:06:08Speaker 8: screws to boot from it.
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: Wow, that looks painful.
- 1:06:13Speaker 8: So watch your stuff out there, kids, all right?
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: Bro to your number two?
- 1:06:23Speaker 5: Oh yeah. A couple of years ago we go to
- 1:06:27Speaker 5: Fort Peck usually every year for a Memorial Day weekend,
- 1:06:32Speaker 5: and a couple of years ago we just had like
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: the trip of trips, like for three days we could
- 1:06:37Speaker 5: do like no wrong on Walleye and Pike, like giant Walleye,
- 1:06:42Speaker 5: Big Pike, and it was it was just like one
- 1:06:45Speaker 5: of the best fishing trips I've ever been on. Like
- 1:06:47Speaker 5: the boys were just crushing big fish.
- 1:06:50Speaker 4: It was.
- 1:06:50Speaker 5: It was just a lot of fun.
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: You can also get your heart broken there too.
- 1:06:53Speaker 9: Oh yeah.
- 1:06:54Speaker 5: I mean the year before it wasn't that great. Last
- 1:06:57Speaker 5: year it.
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: Was just like the wind too.
- 1:06:59Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, but that we just like hit it perfectly
- 1:07:03Speaker 5: and it was just lake.
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: Cool.
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: Steve, you want to do your you're number two?
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: Bring that up here.
- 1:07:17Speaker 3: I think we all know this picture.
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: Oh yeah one, uh, the one that got away. That
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: octopus still down there, still down there, still haunts me somehow.
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: I'm gonna find out where he lives. Pushing the pot.
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: I know where he lives. They don't move that much.
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: We're going to tangle again, probably this August.
- 1:07:36Speaker 5: That thing might be big enough to just drag your book.
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: Because I told you that what I learned about it,
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: what the guy told me.
- 1:07:42Speaker 5: A trick, a fishing TRICKIM.
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: When you're fighting, having a fight with one, put a
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: hook into him, yeah before then you fight with him,
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: and when if he wins the fight, he just takes
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: off to the bottom, then you crank him back up
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: and fight with him again. You can fight him as
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: many times as you want because you got that hook
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: stuck in them. So next time I get him up
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: to the boat, I'm putting a hook into him, or
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: I'm going to drag his ass to the beach. I'm
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: just gonna drive to the beach. Just on the beach,
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: he can stick to the bottom of the boat all
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: he wants, and then he's pretty soon it's gonna be
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: pinned between my boat bottom and the bank. I got
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: it all planned.
- 1:08:20Speaker 3: I'm just imagining this being the last act of your life,
- 1:08:23Speaker 3: like decades from now, and it's just you and the octopus.
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: You both end up on a beach somewhere.
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: I would love to die fighting that octopus.
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: Great, Okay, let's go to Maggie's number number one.
- 1:08:38Speaker 8: See what Oh my uh Nate, my boyfriend and my
- 1:08:43Speaker 8: good friend Emily and I took his awesome trip to
- 1:08:46Speaker 8: Costa Rica pas Gios pesca dios se uh that rooster fish.
- 1:08:52Speaker 8: I it fought so hard it was it was like
- 1:08:56Speaker 8: tailing like a tarpain getting up and I was so spent,
- 1:09:00Speaker 8: and the guys picked it up and handed it to me.
- 1:09:03Speaker 8: I was like, oh, man, I gotta do push ups
- 1:09:05Speaker 8: before my next saltwater fishing trip. I spent, But so
- 1:09:10Speaker 8: we went out a couple days with the guy. We
- 1:09:12Speaker 8: went out at the beginning of our trip. This is
- 1:09:14Speaker 8: like a two week trip. We just kind of bopped
- 1:09:16Speaker 8: around the Osa Peninsula and so we went out the
- 1:09:21Speaker 8: first day and we crushed it on Dorato. So we
- 1:09:23Speaker 8: had a pile of fish that we just freeze and
- 1:09:26Speaker 8: carried around with us, and we went out. I think
- 1:09:31Speaker 8: it was like right before Christmas that first day. So
- 1:09:34Speaker 8: I think the next picture should be our Christmas feast.
- 1:09:39Speaker 8: Oh that's a jack I caught off shore. We just
- 1:09:41Speaker 8: tossed poppers off the shore for jack and there were
- 1:09:45Speaker 8: brewster fish surfing in the waves. Really, it was incredible
- 1:09:49Speaker 8: just the diversity of fish we found. So this was
- 1:09:53Speaker 8: all Doroto. We've got like three different We've got like
- 1:09:57Speaker 8: two savices, a poke kind of like a crudo sashimi thing,
- 1:10:02Speaker 8: some pan fried fish, uh, some kind of burnt fried plantains,
- 1:10:06Speaker 8: and a embarrassing amount of Pillson's in the trash can
- 1:10:11Speaker 8: over there. But uh, but that was our Christmas feast.
- 1:10:14Speaker 8: All in. The snapper was incredibly good eating.
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: That's a mutton.
- 1:10:20Speaker 5: Is that a coubrera?
- 1:10:21Speaker 8: I think it's a small cubrera. The cubra was really tasty.
- 1:10:25Speaker 5: Those things get jagged, they get huge.
- 1:10:27Speaker 8: We caught a bigger one, but that size was really
- 1:10:30Speaker 8: good eating. We actually, the one souvenir we brought back
- 1:10:33Speaker 8: from Costa Rica was this like metal dish that we
- 1:10:37Speaker 8: bought at one of the local stores so we could
- 1:10:39Speaker 8: cook those snapper fish in it. And that is a
- 1:10:42Speaker 8: that's the one thing we brought home and I still
- 1:10:43Speaker 8: use it for cooking fish.
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: Great, all right, Brody, you're number one.
- 1:10:48Speaker 8: Hmm.
- 1:10:50Speaker 5: Every trip to the Fish Act is good. But last
- 1:10:54Speaker 5: year was like exceptionally good fishing. And the funny thing is,
- 1:10:59Speaker 5: like a day or two before we got there, Steve
- 1:11:03Speaker 5: called me and he's like, man, they got some bad news.
- 1:11:07Speaker 5: He's like, the fishing is really good, so it's bound
- 1:11:09Speaker 5: to end soon.
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: Yeah, and it comes in seven day waves.
- 1:11:14Speaker 5: But we got there and it just kept going and
- 1:11:17Speaker 5: going and going all week. Halibut, salmon, Pacific cod, lincott.
- 1:11:24Speaker 5: It was just like a really good king salmon. It
- 1:11:29Speaker 5: was just a really really good week of fishing. And
- 1:11:31Speaker 5: it's just always a great time up there.
- 1:11:36Speaker 3: Great, all right, let's move on to Steve's number one here.
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: Oh yeah, so that's yeah, that's a wooden hook, a
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: traditional Native Alaskan coastal Native Alaskan fishing hook called a
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: knock knah. I was out with Heather Duville and her
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: father Mike, who lived in Craig, Alaska. Their cling it
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: and they took me out to fish. We were filming
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: my New History Channel show Hunting History, and one of
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: the scenes we go out with them to fish with
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: traditional hooks. I had always seen these hooks everywhere you
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: go in Southeast Alaska. One of these hooks is hanging
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: on the wall and I always thought two things. I thought,
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: how do you set that thing? And two there's no
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: way that thing works. And we put a dozen of
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: those hooks down. Let them fish for maybe two hours.
- 1:12:34Speaker 5: You're baiting at with octopus, right.
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: Baita with octopus. Her and her dad set out. They
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: always set them in pairs. They set them in pairs
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: so the hooks compete with each other. We set out
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: six pairs. Okay, they let them fish out of two hours.
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: Maybe we let them sit for two hours. So twelve hooks,
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: all set in the same area on the same bank,
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: come back and had and had three three halbit all
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: seventy plus.
- 1:12:59Speaker 8: So you're not like trugging.
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: That hook floats. So that hook is tied to a rock.
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: So there's a rock, and you had about eighteen inches
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: of the line, and that hook floats above the rock.
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: It's buoyant and it's got two different woods, so it
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: floats the right way, and it's one of those what
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: he ate is wrapped an octopus. So he goes on
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: and they got a metal spike on there that winds
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: up catching them pointing back the other way. So they
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: were telling me that traditionally those hooks were made with bear,
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: not metal, not stainless, but bear shinbone. Okay, So they
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: carved their own knocks and they put that stainless barb
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: on there, you know. But I when I got home,
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: I put out an email at looking for bear shinbones,
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: and Corey's not here, gave me a bear shinbone. So
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: I cut that bear shinbone up, and I made a
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: couple bear shin bone barbs, and that they had given
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: me one of those knocks, and I took the steel
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: spike off and put a bear shinbone. I made the
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: I did the whole thing. I dried it out real
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: good and then made it with a belt sander. So
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: I made the prong and mounted that bear shinbone prong
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: and sent it back up the heather. And they're gonna
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: take it out and fish it cool, and seeing I
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: think it's gonna hold up nice. Yeah, I think it's
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: gonna hold up. That was But that day, that was
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: one of the most incredible things I've ever seen. Twelve hooks,
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: three big hal but one of those sets had two.
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: So seeing a halbit come up on a wooden hook
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: tied to a rock.
- 1:14:37Speaker 3: That's why I mean a rock.
- 1:14:40Speaker 8: I had seen those, but I always assumed they were
- 1:14:42Speaker 8: like trolled or something.
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: It was cool as shit, man, I couldn't believe. You know.
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: The other thing is when that fish is hooked on
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: that thing, he's just like they take him up real general.
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: He's not fighting. It's like you got him, you got
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: him by the balls. When he's on that thing, man,
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: they just come up the like I give up.
- 1:15:00Speaker 5: And when when they're pulling him in, are they harpooner?
- 1:15:03Speaker 5: They just lift it up.
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: And so he takes I learned so much shit about hell.
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: But this day, when that fish comes up, he's got
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: a way. He hits it on its nose flop, just
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: stuns them, just stuns them, and you already pull big
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: hell in. The boat starts beating all around. It's gonna
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: like break fishing rides, and everybody's freaking out. They pet
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: it on the white side of the belly. You just
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: tickle its belly and they go rigid. And then I
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: also learned I've been bleeding halbit all the way wrong.
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: When they bleed a halibit, it's like it's like it's
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: like a Quentin Tarantino movie. Yeah, where I can't explain it.
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: You don't want to give away that dude, and they're
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: not sawing away. I mean they take that knife and
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: one little and it's like, like I said, it's like
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: a I didn't know there's so much blood in Albit.
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: We bleed helbit, you get like a thimble. They bleed hell.
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: But like I said, it looks like it's like it's
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: like watching pulp fiction.
- 1:16:00Speaker 8: Hmm.
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: That's a hell of a day, I bet. Thank you, Heather.
- 1:16:05Speaker 3: Awesome, Thanks guys. Okay, last last Q and a oh
- 1:16:08Speaker 3: exacting here and then we'll wrap up the shows here,
- 1:16:10Speaker 3: last last call for questions. Get him in if you
- 1:16:12Speaker 3: want us. The first one's more of a comment, but
- 1:16:14Speaker 3: he thought you'd appreciate this. Steve Collins says that he
- 1:16:16Speaker 3: finally picked up a copy of The Scavenger's Guide to
- 1:16:18Speaker 3: Hook Cuisine from a used bookstore and the lower half
- 1:16:21Speaker 3: of the pages are covered in dried deer blood. So
- 1:16:24Speaker 3: that's great to let you know.
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: That's great. How do you know it's dear blood?
- 1:16:27Speaker 3: He says. Apparently someone whoever sold it to the store
- 1:16:30Speaker 3: wrote a note saying it was dear blood. Maybe maybe
- 1:16:32Speaker 3: he's just trying to cover it.
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: Well, that's classic murder. That's a classic murder move right there,
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: Cops get to your house. That's all dear blood boys.
- 1:16:41Speaker 3: Question for the crew, what do you think of shed
- 1:16:43Speaker 3: hunting area closures? Is it ethical or a pointless gesture?
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: No, I think it makes sense, like in some place.
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: It depends in some places. I think where you have
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: Like I think if you got an area where you
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: got those incredible amounts of snow, and you got a
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: bunch of animals that are already stressed and half dead,
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: and it's March, and they and instead of people hounding
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: them and chasing them around, get antlers. I see now
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: and then that it makes sense to tell everybody to
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: hold off till until you produce the snow load and
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: the animals can move on.
- 1:17:15Speaker 8: I totally agree because I live right in the middle
- 1:17:17Speaker 8: of a huge mule deer migration corridor. We've got elk
- 1:17:21Speaker 8: feed grounds, and if people could just go in there whenever,
- 1:17:25Speaker 8: like those animals would be freaked out. Yeah, and the
- 1:17:28Speaker 8: most stressful time of the year.
- 1:17:30Speaker 5: You just don't need to be bumping them around at
- 1:17:32Speaker 5: the time of year when they're at their like the
- 1:17:36Speaker 5: bottom of their health for the year. It's just like
- 1:17:38Speaker 5: too easy to run them down.
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: Yeah, and there's a saying winter, winter weekends, spring kills.
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: You're hitting them at a bad time. And then and
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: then two you always got to like the the problem
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: is too you always sometimes you got to make laws
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: for the worst actors. Yep, And you get people. It
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: sucks to say it, but you get people that run
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: after and chase after animals to get them to drop.
- 1:17:59Speaker 8: Oh man. And like the shed Opener where I live,
- 1:18:03Speaker 8: it's well, they actually have a week for locals now,
- 1:18:06Speaker 8: which is nice because it's slowed it down a little bit.
- 1:18:08Speaker 8: But like I walk my dog out on BLM every
- 1:18:11Speaker 8: day and I know the place is where the deer hold,
- 1:18:13Speaker 8: and I avoid those places. You know, shed Opener, people
- 1:18:17Speaker 8: are just running around on four or five side by sides,
- 1:18:20Speaker 8: like not on dirt roads. There's more people out there.
- 1:18:23Speaker 8: I never see a soul out there, and they're just
- 1:18:26Speaker 8: all over the place, deer running around, freaking out like
- 1:18:29Speaker 8: it's always a big ordeal. So you know, there might
- 1:18:32Speaker 8: be something to having like one opening day being this
- 1:18:35Speaker 8: big event, but I think it's better than animals getting
- 1:18:38Speaker 8: chased around in the winter when they're already struggling. Pretty good.
- 1:18:42Speaker 3: Mitch is asking how long is too long to freeze
- 1:18:45Speaker 3: a skull before cleaning it to mount I.
- 1:18:52Speaker 8: Had a deer skull in a Dave Sushi bag that
- 1:18:57Speaker 8: I forgot about in my garage when I lived in
- 1:19:00Speaker 8: a trailer. You're in Bozeman with my friend and Goes.
- 1:19:03Speaker 8: I was wondering what was in that Dave Sushi bag
- 1:19:06Speaker 8: in the garage and I opened it up, and good lord,
- 1:19:08Speaker 8: bagging that thing's rancid. I was like, Oh, don't worry,
- 1:19:12Speaker 8: I'll boil it. It'll be fine.
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: Yeah, that that bone will never weaken in a freezer.
- 1:19:18Speaker 10: Cool.
- 1:19:18Speaker 3: I think you covered a lot of this stuff on
- 1:19:19Speaker 3: the podcast with most Steve, but this is the first
- 1:19:21Speaker 3: radio live since your new show Hunting History premiered. Uh
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: and Anthony's feeding into the conspiracy says, do you think
- 1:19:27Speaker 3: DV Cooper burned his parachute?
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: No? I mean, no one knows, but I don't know.
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: If you ever a mess with the parachute, that's a
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: They're a mess. They're a mess. I have to think
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: I think he stashed it. I think he stuck it somewhere.
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: I don't think he carried it around. I think he
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: buried it somewhere. You know, after messing with one, like
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: you stick that thing under log and jam it under
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: there and throw some moss and stuff. You have to
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: just you have to like dig in the right.
- 1:19:56Speaker 5: Spot, especially in that environment.
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: I don't think he carried it around. I think it
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: would have been a bit in the rain.
- 1:20:04Speaker 3: Greg's asking thoughts on Colorado non resident elk bow tags
- 1:20:07Speaker 3: in twenty twenty five. Do you think the old over
- 1:20:09Speaker 3: the counter units will be zero points? He's trying to
- 1:20:11Speaker 3: build confidence. He wasn't over the counter guy that wasn't
- 1:20:13Speaker 3: smart enough to save up his points.
- 1:20:16Speaker 5: I think I think it was a necessary move as
- 1:20:20Speaker 5: much as people don't want to hear it. And the
- 1:20:24Speaker 5: point thing is going to be very unit dependent. Some
- 1:20:29Speaker 5: units they'll you'll need points and some you won't. Just
- 1:20:33Speaker 5: depends how many tags they issue.
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: Cool. I could do this all day, Phil, I like
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: these questions.
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: Okay, well, this is officially the longest episode of Radio Live.
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: We can keep going stop.
- 1:20:44Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, cool, thanks the questions, guys, appreciate it is
- 1:20:50Speaker 3: the part where you wrap up the show, Steve, you know,
- 1:20:52Speaker 3: say anything else you want to say?
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Brody, wrap it up.
- 1:20:58Speaker 5: How about I wrap it up by telling you to
- 1:20:59Speaker 5: talk about your little history tour you're doing.
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: Oh yeah, so me and Randall tour is a little
