- 0:02You're listening to the
- 0:03Play Therapy Parenting Podcast with Dr. Brenna Hicks.
- 0:09Hi, I'm Dr. Brenna Hicks, The Kid Counselor.
- 0:11This is the Play Therapy Parenting Podcast where
- 0:14I give you insight awareness and
- 0:15enlightenment about your parenting and your relationship with your kids.
- 0:19In today's episode, we are going to talk about
- 0:23your presence with your kids.
- 0:26So we spent a lot of time talking through the reflective responses.
- 0:29We spent a lot of time talking about
- 0:30the pillars and actually how to practically
- 0:33implement those with your kids at home.
- 0:36But
- 0:37I've recently had a lot of instances where
- 0:41I've seen parents and their kids physically together
- 0:45but
- 0:46not engaged or attuned to each other at all.
- 0:51And I feel like this is a huge hindrance
- 0:54to creating the kind of relationship with our kids that we need.
- 0:59So we're going to talk about what it means to be engaged, what it means to be present,
- 1:05what it means to be attuned with our children.
- 1:09Because if we miss those components,
- 1:12it's really difficult to establish the kind
- 1:14of relationship that we've been working toward
- 1:17with the play therapy, parenting approach
- 1:20The path to calm, confident and in control parenting starts now.
- 1:30Ok. So I just went on a trip, my family and I went to Kansas City and to Arlington, Texas
- 1:38and we are following the Rays to all 30 ballparks. So we caught the Rays
- 1:44versus the Royals and then the Rays versus the Rangers.
- 1:48And so we were gone about a week, we were on
- 1:50lots of different airplanes because we had one way
- 1:53tickets to all of these places
- 1:55and on the way home, coming back to Tampa,
- 1:59I was sitting in the row with a dad and his son
- 2:04and it was a 2.5 hour flight
- 2:06and I was so pleasantly surprised
- 2:11and it filled my heart up
- 2:13at
- 2:13the way that dad
- 2:15spent time that entire plane ride
- 2:18to engage with his son.
- 2:20They colored together,
- 2:22they cuddled together, they talked with each other.
- 2:26They watched a show together,
- 2:29they
- 2:30looked through pictures of the little boy at one point said I miss mommy
- 2:34and the dad got out his phone and went into his albums and
- 2:39showed his son pictures of his mom because he was missing her.
- 2:43And I spent, I was reading a book,
- 2:45but I spent the entire 2.5 hours going.
- 2:49This is play therapy, parenting,
- 2:52this is the presence, this is the attunement, this is the engagement
- 2:58that forms the connection
- 3:00that we want
- 3:02because we can be physically present with our kids.
- 3:05We can be sitting in a seat next to them on a plane.
- 3:08We can be sitting in a car with them, we can be sitting in a room with them,
- 3:11we can be sitting at the
- 3:12the dining room table with them.
- 3:15But it does not mean that we are attuned present or engaged
- 3:20because being physically with someone is not the same
- 3:23thing as emotionally or mentally or psychologically present.
- 3:29And what do we talk about over and over and over again?
- 3:33If we want
- 3:35to have the kind of parent child relationship,
- 3:38we have to focus on the relationship
- 3:41that we want.
- 3:43It all comes back to a relationship.
- 3:45And if you started listening in season two,
- 3:47I encourage you to go back to season one because
- 3:50I spend a lot of time talking about the relationship
- 3:54in the earlier episodes.
- 3:57Why?
- 3:58Because the relationship trumps everything.
- 4:02If you don't have the solid relationship with your kids
- 4:07that you could,
- 4:09you lose your influence,
- 4:12you lose your bond, you lose the trust,
- 4:16you lose communication
- 4:18and I can go on and on.
- 4:19I mean,
- 4:20literally a laundry list of all the things that are affected when
- 4:24you don't have the kind of relationship that you could have.
- 4:28So when I was looking at this, dad and his son in my row on the way home on the plane,
- 4:34I just thought to myself,
- 4:36this is what play therapy parenting is all about. This is it embodied in real time.
- 4:42Ironically, my office manager took a picture, we have
- 4:46cameras in all of the offices and all of the rooms at my center.
- 4:49Obviously, we work with minors.
- 4:51So we for safety and security and liability. We have cameras in every room
- 4:58and we have an area specifically for children and parents to play
- 5:03while they're waiting for their appointment. Or if it's a sibling, waiting for
- 5:07one of their other children,
- 5:10you know, their brother or sister that are actually in a play session,
- 5:12they have a place to play as well.
- 5:14So my office manager took a screenshot
- 5:17of a father and daughter in the play area.
- 5:22The daughter sitting at the table playing with something,
- 5:25the dad is sitting right next to her and he's staring at the screen of his phone
- 5:31and she sent me that picture with the email that said something like how
- 5:36sad is this or how tragic is this or something along those lines.
- 5:41And, you know, I think about that
- 5:43he would probably say
- 5:45innocently. I mean, obviously he wasn't trying to ignore his, ignore his daughter.
- 5:49That wasn't my implication,
- 5:51but he would probably innocently say, oh, I was playing with her.
- 5:54I was in the room with her like we, yeah, we played for the whole hour,
- 5:59but you were physically present. Only
- 6:02your mind was somewhere else. Your thoughts were somewhere else.
- 6:05Your attention was somewhere else. Your engagement was somewhere else
- 6:09that's not forming the relationship that we need
- 6:12to make sure that we build
- 6:14the kind of parenting
- 6:17approach that we want
- 6:19So what do we need to do to ensure
- 6:23that we have the presence and attunement and
- 6:25engagement that we ideally need to have.
- 6:28So number one
- 6:30work on having eye contact with your kids,
- 6:33it's really hard to be disengaged when you're looking at your child.
- 6:39So if that means you need to put your phone away,
- 6:42if that means you need to close your laptop,
- 6:44if that means you need to turn the TV off,
- 6:46if that means you need to stop paying bills at that moment.
- 6:52One of the principles that we talked about ages
- 6:54ago in season one was a 30-second burst of attention
- 6:57when your child is trying to get your attention.
- 7:00We often are notorious for saying, hang on, hold on, I'm busy. Wait, I'm talking.
- 7:04You need to be patient.
- 7:05Uh You don't interrupt, I'm right in the middle of doing.
- 7:09But a 30-second burst of attention is I can give you 30 seconds.
- 7:14So you get on the child's level, you look them in the eye
- 7:17and you say,
- 7:18OK, tell me,
- 7:19show me
- 7:20what
- 7:23for 30 seconds, we can always give 30 seconds away.
- 7:27But I bring that up to say you're on
- 7:29their level and you're making eye contact with them.
- 7:33You're not in the other room going. What?
- 7:37That's, that's not relationship,
- 7:39relationship is
- 7:40eye contact. It's really hard to be distracted.
- 7:44It's really hard to be disengaged when you're looking at your children.
- 7:48Second principle,
- 7:49you use the reflective responses.
- 7:53So you're going to
- 7:55say back to your child what they're saying to you,
- 7:58it's really hard
- 7:59to be focused on something else and hear your children.
- 8:04And this is probably for a later episode,
- 8:06but be mindful that there's a huge difference between hearing and listening.
- 8:12Hearing is involuntary, listening is voluntary.
- 8:17So even if you hear your children, it doesn't mean you're listening to your children
- 8:21listen
- 8:23so that you can respond back to them with what they've told you.
- 8:26So when they say,
- 8:28oh my gosh,
- 8:29we were on the playground today and I went up to the
- 8:31slide and it was so hot and the whole way down,
- 8:33it was burning my legs.
- 8:35That's a Florida example. I know sorry
- 8:38slides get really hot in Florida on the playground.
- 8:41You can tell where I've lived my whole life, right?
- 8:44So your child says that to you
- 8:46and you say
- 8:47whoa, the slide was so hot. It burned your legs.
- 8:53That is relationship building
- 8:55because you're reflecting back to the child what they've told you,
- 8:58guess what you listened,
- 9:00you couldn't do that if you weren't listening
- 9:02or you track their behavior.
- 9:04So what you say what you see them doing, you say back to them
- 9:10they are doing donuts with their bike in the
- 9:13driveway and they're laughing and they're having so much fun
- 9:18and you say whoa, you're going around and around in circles
- 9:23that's tracking the child's behavior. But you had to pay attention to notice
- 9:28or you can reflect the child's feeling.
- 9:31So let's go back to the two examples.
- 9:33The slide example, you could say that it shocked your child,
- 9:36it surprised your child.
- 9:39You didn't expect that.
- 9:42That's a feeling reflection for that scenario.
- 9:44The child going around and around in circles doing donuts with the bike.
- 9:49You are so glad
- 9:52to be able to ride your bike.
- 9:57You feel ecstatic
- 9:59that you're making yourself dizzy.
- 10:03There's all kinds of opportunities. We have to reflect our children's feelings,
- 10:08but we have to be engaged.
- 10:10We have to be present and we have to be attuned to their feelings.
- 10:14Remember they're going to demonstrate them nonverbally more often than not.
- 10:19So we have to be looking and paying attention
- 10:22and listening
- 10:23so that we non verbally understand
- 10:26what they're expressing to us
- 10:29and then finally
- 10:30to be really fully present and engaged and
- 10:33attuned so that that relationship can be forged.
- 10:36You really want to try to experience your child's world through your child's eyes.
- 10:43And the only way to do that
- 10:45is to really give undivided focused attention to your kids.
- 10:50And and here's the challenge, right? I know our son is almost 15.
- 10:54I work with parents all day every day. I have for almost two decades.
- 10:59I know how challenging it is
- 11:01to be engaged, present and attuned as a parent all the time.
- 11:04It's impossible actually.
- 11:07So this is not a call to
- 11:09always be completely engaged with your child. You can't,
- 11:14but you can
- 11:16at least once an hour,
- 11:18you can, at least
- 11:20when you are aware of the significance of a moment for your child,
- 11:26you can be purposeful that for this next 15 minutes,
- 11:29I'm going to give you everything I have.
- 11:32And if it's only 15 minutes a day,
- 11:35that 15 minutes is so significant to your kids and
- 11:38to the relationship that you have as their parent.
- 11:43So give what you can.
- 11:45This isn't, this isn't a challenge to be present with your kids every waking moment,
- 11:50but it is a challenge to be present
- 11:53and mindful of it.
- 11:54Hey, I need to give my kids 15 minutes right now.
- 11:58I need to really respond to this. I need to really pay attention.
- 12:01I need to really watch. I need to be attuned. I need to be engaged.
- 12:04I can't just be in the same room
- 12:06or I can't be talking from another room.
- 12:09It's not the same thing.
- 12:10So you're trying to experience your child's world through your child's eyes.
- 12:14What wonder do they experience? What awe do they have? What feeling are they
- 12:20experiencing in that moment?
- 12:24If you focus on experiencing your child's world through your child's eyes,
- 12:28you have to be engaged in prison.
- 12:31So I hope that that is an encouragement to you. I hope that you're able to take that
- 12:35and, and be mindful of that this week because the more we work on the relationship,
- 12:42the more engaged we become
- 12:45and
- 12:46we can be the parent that's staring at a
- 12:48phone in the same room while their child's playing.
- 12:51Or we can be the parent on the plane
- 12:54that spent 2.5 hours just pouring into that little boy,
- 12:58his son's name was Ryan by the way
- 13:00and he was four years old
- 13:02and
- 13:03it was the most endearing sweet
- 13:06interaction
- 13:08and I just smiled almost the whole plane ride home in the midst of reading my book.
- 13:13You know,
- 13:13I didn't want to be that creepy person that stared at the other people in the aisle.
- 13:16But
- 13:17I just kind of smiled almost the whole way home because I was like, yes, like dad,
- 13:22you did it, you did it, you got it.
- 13:24You understand like thi this is what this is what parenting is
- 13:28and that's the parents that we wanna be.
- 13:30That's why you're listening to this podcast.
- 13:32So I encourage you to be mindful of that this week. Relationship matters,
