- 5:04Speaker 10: Okay, thanks.
- 5:07Speaker 8: Well it's been about a year and a half, hasn't it?
- 5:09Speaker 7: Money?
- 5:10Speaker 10: About that long? Yew?
- 5:11Speaker 9: We got you for possition that time too.
- 5:13Speaker 7: Didn't we.
- 5:14Speaker 10: Yeah that's right.
- 5:15Speaker 12: How long you've been in the stuff this time?
- 5:17Speaker 10: Well, I guess I've been hooked bad about a month.
- 5:19Speaker 12: How much you're shooting them?
- 5:21Speaker 10: Well, about two caps a day?
- 5:23Speaker 9: And you were picked up down on scott from last night.
- 5:25Speaker 9: You had saving gaps on you.
- 5:26Speaker 10: Yeah, that's right.
- 5:27Speaker 12: We checked with the crime lab. They've run the stuff.
- 5:30Speaker 12: It's not the usual Mexican, is it.
- 5:32Speaker 13: That's right, you want to tell us about it. Yeah,
- 5:34Speaker 13: it's good stuff. It's not Mexico.
- 5:36Speaker 8: We know that money.
- 5:37Speaker 9: Where'd you get it?
- 5:39Speaker 13: Haven't had anything like that for a long time, real good,
- 5:42Speaker 13: haven't been cut real fine. Maybe it's coming in from
- 5:46Speaker 13: the East coast. You can't get nothing like that from Mexico.
- 5:48Speaker 4: Now, look, money, we ran the stuff through the lab.
- 5:51Speaker 4: We know it's high grade heroin. We know all about it.
- 5:53Speaker 12: Now I want you to tell us where you've been
- 5:54Speaker 12: getting it.
- 5:55Speaker 13: Well, you know how it is. You want to ask
- 5:57Speaker 13: the impossible of me. My life wouldn't be worth a penny.
- 6:00Speaker 12: You know how it is?
- 6:01Speaker 9: Mean handles your year and a half ago, didn't you money?
- 6:03Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 6:04Speaker 9: I'm telling around, aren't you.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 6:06Speaker 10: I did time though.
- 6:07Speaker 7: And you knew that going in.
- 6:08Speaker 9: You're gonna do time on this trip.
- 6:10Speaker 12: Too, So don't shoot us that line.
- 6:11Speaker 11: Huh.
- 6:12Speaker 10: Well, you guys know how it is with us. Guys,
- 6:14Speaker 10: I can't tell you anything.
- 6:15Speaker 12: No, it isn't that you can't. You just don't want to. Now.
- 6:19Speaker 4: Look, we didn't come up here to spend the time
- 6:20Speaker 4: of day with you, Wilkins. This is the only time around.
- 6:22Speaker 4: If you want to help us, you can help yourself.
- 6:24Speaker 4: At the same time. It's up to you.
- 6:26Speaker 10: You mean, you can clear me on this. You can
- 6:27Speaker 10: give me a break.
- 6:28Speaker 9: And we didn't say that.
- 6:29Speaker 6: We can't make any promises to you or give you
- 6:31Speaker 6: any kind of a break.
- 6:32Speaker 9: It's entirely up to you. How you want us to
- 6:34Speaker 9: put it down our reports. Co operative or uncooperative.
- 6:39Speaker 10: Oh okay, you squared with me last time.
- 6:42Speaker 12: You helped us, last time we made a case.
- 6:44Speaker 10: But I'm not gonna be able to help you very much.
- 6:46Speaker 13: Where you've been getting it, well, I've only made a
- 6:49Speaker 13: couple of buys on that good stuff. I just got
- 6:51Speaker 13: it from some old mule I just happened to meet
- 6:53Speaker 13: down there, seen to be pretty well loaded with the stuff.
- 6:55Speaker 9: Where'd you meet him?
- 6:57Speaker 10: Go down near fifth in the spring somewhere.
- 6:59Speaker 9: What's his name?
- 7:00Speaker 13: I never did know his name. I just knew that
- 7:02Speaker 13: he was pushing the stuff, some old mule, that's all.
- 7:05Speaker 12: Who's he pushing it for?
- 7:06Speaker 7: Now?
- 7:07Speaker 13: You know they never tell us guys where they're getting it,
- 7:09Speaker 13: you know how they do. Yeah, I never did talk
- 7:11Speaker 13: to him very much. I did hear him say once
- 7:14Speaker 13: he was getting his stuff from a new bunch of
- 7:15Speaker 13: guys from the east, said they were really going to
- 7:17Speaker 13: open up this town. Well he talked, they're no small
- 7:20Speaker 13: time operators. I got enough out of it to know
- 7:23Speaker 13: they're working out of the Plaza Royal Hotel.
- 7:25Speaker 10: Never figured that, would.
- 7:26Speaker 9: You anything else? Any names mentioned?
- 7:29Speaker 13: Yeah, I remember this old mule mentioned a couple names.
- 7:33Speaker 13: I think he talked about somebody named Kirk and another
- 7:36Speaker 13: guy called Smith. Now you understand, this guy was just talking.
- 7:39Speaker 13: I don't know how they fit in or what the
- 7:41Speaker 13: connections are.
- 7:41Speaker 7: Man, we understand.
- 7:42Speaker 12: Where can we get a hold of this whole meal?
- 7:44Speaker 10: I don't know where he's at.
- 7:45Speaker 12: How do you get a hold of them when you
- 7:46Speaker 12: want to make a buy?
- 7:48Speaker 10: I just run into him.
- 7:49Speaker 13: That's all down around Spring Street, you know, just around
- 7:53Speaker 13: last time I was down.
- 7:54Speaker 10: I couldn't find it.
- 7:56Speaker 9: Is that all of it money? You know what you
- 7:57Speaker 9: can tell us?
- 7:58Speaker 10: Well, I don't know too much anyway, you know how
- 8:00Speaker 10: it is. I couldn't tell you anymore. It's all I know.
- 8:04Speaker 12: All right, let's get out of his five ten of
- 8:05Speaker 12: it's all you got.
- 8:07Speaker 10: That's everything I got. Hope you fellas will write me up.
- 8:11Speaker 13: Okay, I think I helped you quite a bit, haven't
- 8:14Speaker 13: I one of the best hotels in town, Plaza Royal.
- 8:18Speaker 13: Never would have figured that, would you, Mabby. I've told
- 8:21Speaker 13: you quite a lot. The rest ought to be easy.
- 8:23Speaker 7: You know you're wrong.
- 8:24Speaker 12: There many why you haven't told us the name of
- 8:26Speaker 12: your mu. You haven't told us where we could find him.
- 8:28Speaker 12: You haven't made it so easy.
- 8:29Speaker 10: It's all I have. I've told you a lot.
- 8:32Speaker 12: Yeah, there's a lot you didn't tell.
- 8:40Speaker 4: We continued our interrogation of Matty Wilkins. He refused to
- 8:42Speaker 4: divulge any further information. What he had told us, together
- 8:46Speaker 4: with information already compiled, seemed to check out.
- 8:49Speaker 7: For the past seven months.
- 8:50Speaker 4: We've been trying to localize the operations of what had
- 8:52Speaker 4: come to be regarded as a well running distribution center
- 8:55Speaker 4: for high grade heroin. We knew of the existence of
- 8:58Speaker 4: this distribution point through the various us that had been
- 9:00Speaker 4: picked up almost daily. These users would have in their
- 9:03Speaker 4: possession quantities of high grade and narcotics.
- 9:06Speaker 7: Unlike the cheaper, lower.
- 9:08Speaker 4: Grade quality common in the southwest part of the country,
- 9:10Speaker 4: this type of heroin was more common to the eastern
- 9:13Speaker 4: section of the United States. We had believed the local
- 9:15Speaker 4: distribution point to be somewhere in our metropolitan downtown area.
- 9:19Speaker 4: The information gained from Matty Wilkins had strengthened this theory.
- 9:23Speaker 4: Ten twenty five am we met with Francis Kerney, captain
- 9:26Speaker 4: of the Narcotics.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Division Pliza Royal Hotel.
- 9:29Speaker 6: What do you think, Well, we've figured what we were
- 9:31Speaker 6: looking for could be in that area, but we've never
- 9:33Speaker 6: put her finger on that hotel.
- 9:35Speaker 2: How do you figure on working it?
- 9:37Speaker 7: Or driving back from the jail?
- 9:38Speaker 4: Ben and I were just kicking it around, Skipper, what
- 9:40Speaker 4: do you think about putting a man in that hotel?
- 9:42Speaker 2: Anything's a great deal better than we're doing now, But
- 9:44Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 9:45Speaker 7: Well, I'd like to give it a try.
- 9:47Speaker 2: I'm sure like a crack attage giver, you know how
- 9:49Speaker 2: I feel about these kind of assignments. One man working
- 9:51Speaker 2: inside one outside brings the element of danger up kind
- 9:54Speaker 2: of high.
- 9:55Speaker 7: Well, we know it's not going to be easy, but
- 9:56Speaker 7: it looks like a good bet.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Sometimes these things are. Sometimes they're not. You know what
- 10:00Speaker 2: kind of a bunch they got to be and running
- 10:02Speaker 2: their racket just about as smooth as it can be
- 10:04Speaker 2: run you know the kind of a risk of man
- 10:06Speaker 2: it'd have to take if you tried to make contact
- 10:08Speaker 2: with any of them.
- 10:08Speaker 7: Do we think it's about the quickest way to get
- 10:10Speaker 7: to them.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Maybe it might be with it. You got any ideas
- 10:14Speaker 2: how you'd like to work it.
- 10:15Speaker 6: There's just one thing. We haven't come to any decision.
- 10:17Speaker 6: Who's going in who is well.
- 10:19Speaker 4: I think I ought to be the one to work
- 10:20Speaker 4: it from the inside of the hotel, with Ben working
- 10:22Speaker 4: outside as a contact.
- 10:23Speaker 6: I don't know why we can't just turn that around.
- 10:25Speaker 6: Last time you had the rough end, Joe. You just
- 10:28Speaker 6: got back from your vacation about three weeks ago, didn't you. Yeah,
- 10:30Speaker 6: that's right, And she stayed out in Arizona, Phoenix with it. Yeah,
- 10:34Speaker 6: you know the town very well.
- 10:36Speaker 7: We got some relatives down there.
- 10:38Speaker 2: They started asking you any questions about Phoenix. You could
- 10:40Speaker 2: fill them in. I think so that's probably the best
- 10:43Speaker 2: way to settle it. Ramara Friday here'll be in a
- 10:46Speaker 2: better position knowing a little about Phoenix.
- 10:48Speaker 6: I don't see how you figured that way. I went
- 10:49Speaker 6: on my vacation too. Colimba's Ohio.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Well, because of the type of stuff that's been coming in,
- 10:55Speaker 2: don't you think it'd be a little safeer bet to
- 10:56Speaker 2: have our men come from somewhere out this way rather
- 10:58Speaker 2: than from the east.
- 11:00Speaker 6: Oh yeah, it makes sense. Well, you did it again, Joe,
- 11:04Speaker 6: you beat me out. All right, Let's figure it this way.
- 11:07Speaker 6: You're a local Phoenix hoodlum. Things got too hot for
- 11:10Speaker 6: you down there, and you came up to La to
- 11:12Speaker 6: cool og. Yeah, how about Joe Edwards. How does that sound?
- 11:16Speaker 7: That sounds right to me.
- 11:17Speaker 2: We'll get all the necessary cards, identification papers and a
- 11:20Speaker 2: few letters to carry around with you, all under the
- 11:22Speaker 2: name Joe Edwards.
- 11:23Speaker 7: All right.
- 11:24Speaker 2: I think the best way to work it is for
- 11:25Speaker 2: you to hop right down to Phoenix. When you get
- 11:27Speaker 2: in town, check with Roberts. He's a narcotics down there.
- 11:30Speaker 7: Yeah, I know.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Have Roberts filled in on what's been going on down there,
- 11:34Speaker 2: any of their current characters they've handled recently, any that
- 11:37Speaker 2: have been known to pass through, you know, so you
- 11:39Speaker 2: can talk about it freely.
- 11:40Speaker 7: Yeah, I understand, Joe.
- 11:41Speaker 6: Well, when you check into the hotel down there, why
- 11:43Speaker 6: don't you wear a head up here to the Plaza
- 11:45Speaker 6: Royal for reservation.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Might be a good cover, good thought, that's the way
- 11:49Speaker 2: to handle it. YouTube worked these things before, you know
- 11:51Speaker 2: what to do, all the necessary precautions.
- 11:53Speaker 7: Well, how long do you figure out to lay over
- 11:55Speaker 7: in Phoenix? A couple of days?
- 11:56Speaker 2: Maybe, I think that's long enough for you to get
- 11:59Speaker 2: filled in what you mean?
- 12:00Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, that's fine. Well I'll go home and get packed.
- 12:02Speaker 4: I'll start on it first thing in the morning.
- 12:03Speaker 2: All right, Ramero, I'll stand by at all times, day
- 12:06Speaker 2: and night while you're on this thing. You know enough
- 12:08Speaker 2: to call if things get tight. Sure, since you get
- 12:11Speaker 2: in from Phoenix and get located at the Plaza Royal,
- 12:13Speaker 2: get in touch so we'll know which way to move
- 12:15Speaker 2: right anything else. Oh, we want to break this thing,
- 12:18Speaker 2: but we don't want to do it at the risk
- 12:19Speaker 2: of the life. So if it starts getting warm, check out.
- 12:22Speaker 7: Okay.
- 12:23Speaker 2: I still don't like sending anybody on something like this,
- 12:25Speaker 2: but it's got to be done. We don't know enough
- 12:28Speaker 2: about it. We don't know how many are in the gang.
- 12:30Speaker 2: We don't know what kind of a bunch they are,
- 12:32Speaker 2: So be careful. I will if you're not. And I
- 12:34Speaker 2: hear about it. This will be your last assignment like this. Yeah,
- 12:37Speaker 2: I don't hear about it. Well you figure it, yeah.
- 12:40Speaker 7: Either way I lose.
- 12:47Speaker 4: I went over to the photo room at the crime
- 12:48Speaker 4: labn't picked up the identification papers that had been made
- 12:51Speaker 4: out in the name of Joe Edwards.
- 12:53Speaker 7: I went home and.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Removed all Los Angeles labels from the clothing that I
- 12:56Speaker 4: was to take with me to Phoenix, Arizona. I removed
- 12:59Speaker 4: all my personal ideaification in Los Angeles Police Department credentials.
- 13:02Speaker 7: I left my service.
- 13:03Speaker 4: Revolver home and borrowed a thirty eight automatic from Ben.
- 13:06Speaker 7: I packed it in my suitcase.
- 13:08Speaker 4: The crime lab also furnished me with a package or
- 13:11Speaker 4: a bendle made to resemble the usual form in which
- 13:13Speaker 4: a person would carry Heroin. I packed this in my suitcase.
- 13:17Speaker 4: Before my departure, Ben and I went over the proposed
- 13:19Speaker 4: plan as best we could. I was to arrive from
- 13:22Speaker 4: Phoenix under the assumed name of Joe Edwards. I would
- 13:25Speaker 4: register at the Plaza Royal Hotel in downtown Los Angeles
- 13:28Speaker 4: an attempt to make arrangements to participate in a narcotics buy
- 13:31Speaker 4: for the purpose of gaining sufficient evidence to apprehend the
- 13:33Speaker 4: narcotics ring. I was to keep Ben informed as best
- 13:37Speaker 4: I could of my progress, as outlined by Captain Kearney.
- 13:40Speaker 4: I arrived in Phoenix and contacted Sergeant Roberts at the
- 13:43Speaker 4: Detective Bureau down there. He furnished me with all the
- 13:46Speaker 4: necessary information and assisted me in acquiring local Phoenix clothing
- 13:49Speaker 4: store labels to have sown in my clothing. I obtained
- 13:53Speaker 4: everything possible to make it appear that I was a
- 13:55Speaker 4: longtime resident of Phoenix, Arizona. Several dummy hotel bills were
- 13:59Speaker 4: made up for me to make it look as if
- 14:00Speaker 4: I had lived there for a period of time. I
- 14:03Speaker 4: was furnished with an Arizona driver's license, a membership in
- 14:05Speaker 4: the local social club, and a voters registration step.
- 14:08Speaker 7: These were all packed in my suitcase.
- 14:10Speaker 4: October ninth, ten am, I arrived at the Plaza Royal
- 14:14Speaker 4: Hotel the front desk, Yes.
- 14:16Speaker 7: Sir, my name's Edwards. I'm in from Phoenix. Did you
- 14:19Speaker 7: get my wire one moment there, Yes, sir, Joe Edwards. Yeah,
- 14:24Speaker 7: that's the right.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Would you sign the register please?
- 14:26Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 14:26Speaker 14: All right, thank you, but yes, sir. Would you show
- 14:37Speaker 14: this gentleman in room two eleven please, yes.
- 14:39Speaker 7: Sir, this way, please all right, go ahead, sir, thank.
- 14:46Speaker 15: You too, please. Not very nice weather. To arrive in
- 14:57Speaker 15: Los Angeles.
- 14:58Speaker 7: Is it s no good?
- 15:00Speaker 15: I see by the stickers on your bags you've been
- 15:02Speaker 15: through Arizona.
- 15:03Speaker 7: Yeah, that's right.
- 15:04Speaker 15: It must be nice weather down there.
- 15:06Speaker 7: Huh yeah, that's all right.
- 15:10Speaker 15: This way, sir.
- 15:11Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 15:24Speaker 15: Let me open my window for you, sir. A little
- 15:26Speaker 15: fresh air in here.
- 15:27Speaker 7: All right, okay, thanks, here you go.
- 15:35Speaker 15: Thank you very much, sir. Help you with your bags?
- 15:38Speaker 7: Yeah all right.
- 15:41Speaker 15: Oh I'm sorry, sir. Something dropped out on the floor here.
- 15:44Speaker 7: You better let me have that.
- 15:45Speaker 15: Sorry, very sorry that happened. That's all right, mister Edwards.
- 15:56Speaker 16: While you're in town here, if there's anything I can
- 15:58Speaker 16: do for you, don't hesitate letting. Yeah okay, I couldn't help.
- 16:02Speaker 16: But notice that little package there that I dropped. Yeah, well,
- 16:05Speaker 16: like I say, I know my way around here in
- 16:07Speaker 16: this town.
- 16:07Speaker 15: If you need anything, you know, anything at all.
- 16:09Speaker 7: Sir, I'll tell you what. Now, here's five bucks.
- 16:13Speaker 4: You never saw anything fall out of my bag there, right,
- 16:16Speaker 4: anything you say, sir? Okay, thanks a lot, see you.
- 16:19Speaker 15: Later, huh yes, sir, anything else, sir?
- 16:23Speaker 7: No, No, that'll be all.
- 16:27Speaker 15: You'll remember what I told you, sir.
- 16:29Speaker 4: Yeah, I was just gonna say the same thing to you.
- 16:36Speaker 4: I couldn't be sure, but it looked like I'd been
- 16:38Speaker 4: lucky right from the start. The bell boy at the
- 16:40Speaker 4: Plaza Royal Hotel. I didn't know if I could consider
- 16:43Speaker 4: this an opening contact or not, but he seemed to
- 16:45Speaker 4: show more than a passing interest in the bundle of
- 16:47Speaker 4: narcotics that he had seen fall from my suitcase. I
- 16:50Speaker 4: didn't feel it was the right time to press the
- 16:52Speaker 4: issue any further with a bell hop, but I figured
- 16:54Speaker 4: I'd wait and leave the next move up to whoever
- 16:56Speaker 4: he might have.
- 16:56Speaker 7: Been working for. During the next three days, nothing happened.
- 17:00Speaker 4: I tried, without appearing to be too bold, to arouse
- 17:02Speaker 4: some interest, but without success. October thirteenth, my fifth day
- 17:06Speaker 4: at the Plaza Royal Hotel, six pm, I went in
- 17:09Speaker 4: the bar off the main lobby.
- 17:12Speaker 17: I beg your pardon, Yeah, Kirk Carting's my name. I
- 17:15Speaker 17: noticed you here in the bar in the last couple
- 17:16Speaker 17: of nights. You're up here to Biolho are you selling?
- 17:19Speaker 7: I don't believe a folly already.
- 17:20Speaker 17: Look, boy, we've had you, tab Sin said first day
- 17:22Speaker 17: you hit town October ninth. We haven't been out here
- 17:25Speaker 17: too long ourself. We're in business too. The same business
- 17:27Speaker 17: you're in.
- 17:28Speaker 4: I don't know what kind of business you think I
- 17:29Speaker 4: am in, But you got it figured wrong.
- 17:30Speaker 7: Mister.
- 17:31Speaker 17: You know this entire matter work out much better for
- 17:33Speaker 17: you in the long run if you'd level with me.
- 17:34Speaker 17: You're just going to make it tough on yourself. This
- 17:36Speaker 17: way A sorry, you lost me way back somewhere. All right,
- 17:39Speaker 17: let's do it the hard way. You're up here from Phoenix.
- 17:43Speaker 17: We know you've got some stuff with you. We know
- 17:45Speaker 17: you're not a user. You're a member of the social
- 17:46Speaker 17: club down there. They're registered voting.
- 17:49Speaker 7: I mean, you've been working real hard, haven't.
- 17:50Speaker 17: So there's more. You've got two pieces of luggage. You're
- 17:53Speaker 17: carrying a thirty eight automatic anymore. Yeah, it was telegrammed
- 17:56Speaker 17: from a friend of mine down in Phoenix. Yah, we
- 17:59Speaker 17: know all about you.
- 18:10Speaker 3: You are listening to dragnet authentic cases from official police files.
- 18:23Speaker 4: It was a tight moment as Kirk Harding fingered the
- 18:25Speaker 4: telegram in the bar of the Plaza Royal Hotel. I
- 18:28Speaker 4: had spent many hours in consultation with Sergeant Roberts in Phoenix,
- 18:31Speaker 4: Arizona before undertaking this assignment. I felt sure that we
- 18:34Speaker 4: hadn't overlooked anything that might lead to my true identity.
- 18:37Speaker 4: Kirk Harding read the wire to me was from a
- 18:39Speaker 4: man with the name of George Ferguson. He'd done some
- 18:42Speaker 4: legwork for Harding and had not been able to furnish
- 18:44Speaker 4: him with anything other than what had been found out.
- 18:46Speaker 4: And going over my room, I knew I'd found the
- 18:48Speaker 4: contact that I was looking for.
- 18:51Speaker 7: I told him that I was in the business of buying.
- 18:52Speaker 4: Narcotics, that I was in Los Angeles for the purpose
- 18:54Speaker 4: of making a pre arranged narcotics buy with agents dealing
- 18:58Speaker 4: in Mexican stuff. Ediately gave me a strong sales pitch,
- 19:01Speaker 4: saying that he could furnish me with high grade heroin
- 19:04Speaker 4: fresh from the European market in quantity. At the end
- 19:08Speaker 4: of the first week, I was introduced to kirk Harding's
- 19:10Speaker 4: two associates, another man called Smith full name Horace L. Smith,
- 19:14Speaker 4: and a woman by the name of Lucille Cosgrove. Ben
- 19:17Speaker 4: had been unable to find records on any.
- 19:19Speaker 7: Of the three.
- 19:20Speaker 4: For the next three weeks we became more friendly. We
- 19:22Speaker 4: went places together, spent a great deal of time together. Monday,
- 19:26Speaker 4: November fifteenth, Well.
- 19:28Speaker 15: We've had a lot of fun the last few weeks ely.
- 19:30Speaker 7: He there's no doubt about that. But I got to
- 19:31Speaker 7: be getting back to Phoenix now.
- 19:33Speaker 17: I don't get eager, Joe. You know how kg you were.
- 19:35Speaker 17: You made us waite. Phliminaries are over. This is a
- 19:38Speaker 17: big buy for you or anybody else. Yeah, I know
- 19:40Speaker 17: all that, but who am? Just be patient. You will
- 19:42Speaker 17: have something to really set yourself up with down there. Okay,
- 19:44Speaker 17: excuse me, Joe?
- 19:45Speaker 7: Yeah, go ahead?
- 19:49Speaker 10: Oh?
- 19:52Speaker 7: Hello, hi, Alusi, it's a matter Smith. Don't you feel good?
- 19:56Speaker 2: I don't know Soto food.
- 19:58Speaker 10: I guess I think I got an alcer My stomachs
- 20:01Speaker 10: are all the time.
- 20:01Speaker 7: Oh, it's too bad. I don't know what it could be.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Baking Suda don't do any good anymore? Better drink Joe?
- 20:08Speaker 7: Yeah, fine with me.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Let's say you want to get some ice out of kitchen.
- 20:10Speaker 2: Please here, ex get me Smith. You want to go
- 20:14Speaker 2: see a doctor. You don't know for sure what's wrong
- 20:17Speaker 2: with you. It might make it worse.
- 20:18Speaker 7: If I don't know what it is. How could a
- 20:20Speaker 7: doctor I don't know?
- 20:20Speaker 2: It works for everybody else might for you.
- 20:24Speaker 18: Hey, I can't get this ice straight up?
- 20:26Speaker 11: Joe?
- 20:27Speaker 18: Would you give me a hand please?
- 20:28Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 20:28Speaker 7: Sure, Okay, which one here?

- 20:50Speaker 18: to kill you hot.
- 20:51Speaker 7: You know.
- 20:52Speaker 18: Look, we don't have time to go into it. I
- 20:54Speaker 18: know you won't have a chance. They're gonna kid, what.
- 20:57Speaker 10: Are you doing?
- 20:57Speaker 2: Wait, you're going to freeze? Come on, I'm about to.
- 20:59Speaker 7: Ask all right here, Kirk, I'm sorry, let's go.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, what do you want?

- 21:13Speaker 15: No, I can't do it, Joe for I mix him.
- 21:16Speaker 2: I got some point. Yeah, Smith tells me tonight tonight.
- 21:20Speaker 4: Well that's good. But why don't you tell me a
- 21:22Speaker 4: little ahead of time? I got a date for the night.
- 21:24Speaker 2: I think you better break that one and keep this one,
- 21:26Speaker 2: don't you.
- 21:27Speaker 7: Well yeah, I do, but just wish you to tell
- 21:29Speaker 7: me a little sooner.
- 21:30Speaker 2: There's the phone. You can take care.
- 21:33Speaker 7: Is it all right with you.
- 21:33Speaker 17: You know as much about this business as we do.
- 21:36Speaker 17: Go ahead and use it as long as we can
- 21:38Speaker 17: hit you keep.
- 21:39Speaker 4: Fine, just take a minute, just sit here, Joe. Oh
- 21:43Speaker 4: thanks Smith. Yeah, see, I wonder if you get my
- 21:45Speaker 4: drink for me over there. Sure she's probably gonna be upset.
- 21:48Speaker 7: I may need it.
- 21:48Speaker 11: Huh.
- 22:06Speaker 7: All right, honey, this is Joe.
- 22:08Speaker 5: Oh yeah, Joe.
- 22:09Speaker 4: I'm sorry. I won't be able to make it tonight. Dear,
- 22:11Speaker 4: you can't talk Hill, that's right, dear, No, I just

- 22:17Speaker 7: Yeah, well it just came up all of a suddenly. No, darling,
- 22:21Speaker 7: I can't tell you where I'm going. You couldn't go
- 22:23Speaker 7: along anyway.

- 22:29Speaker 4: But that's all they We can get together later.
- 22:31Speaker 11: Huh.
- 22:31Speaker 1: We use one car, Joe's take as close as we
- 22:34Speaker 1: can do. Eat one car. It'll be safe him.
- 22:36Speaker 7: Well, it's better, honey. Now that's the way I like

- 22:46Speaker 2: Well, she still love you?
- 22:47Speaker 7: Yeah, she loves me.
- 22:52Speaker 4: Fifteen minutes after I hung up, we went downstairs and
- 22:55Speaker 4: got into a green Chrysler Sedan was parked out in
- 22:57Speaker 4: front of the hotel. I looked around. I didn't see
- 23:00Speaker 4: Ben or any of our cars in sight. Smith drove
- 23:03Speaker 4: and Kirk and I got in the back seat. The woman,
- 23:05Speaker 4: Lucille Cosgrove, remained at the hotel. I didn't know which
- 23:09Speaker 4: of the two men was planning to kill me, but
- 23:11Speaker 4: I felt sure Lucille Cosgrove told me the truth. Her
- 23:13Speaker 4: information on the by was right, and maybe this other
- 23:16Speaker 4: was correct as well. We drove out Figaroa Street for
- 23:19Speaker 4: about sixteen miles. At this point it became evident we
- 23:21Speaker 4: were heading for the Los Angeles Harbor area.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Do you ever see if fog is thick as this
- 23:27Speaker 2: to you?
- 23:28Speaker 7: No? Never have.
- 23:30Speaker 10: I can't see fifty feet in front of me.
- 23:32Speaker 7: Yeah, well, just take it easy. Nobody's in a hurry.
- 23:34Speaker 2: That's right, I want to pile up anywhere.
- 23:39Speaker 7: Where are we going?
- 23:40Speaker 2: We're almost there.
- 23:43Speaker 7: This is your car here. I've never seen this one before.
- 23:45Speaker 2: No, we run it isn't that the way you opening.
- 23:47Speaker 7: Yeah, that's right. Just wondered if you played it as
- 23:49Speaker 7: safe as I do.
- 23:50Speaker 2: We do.
- 23:51Speaker 8: I'm going to swing in this next Daley up here, Kirk,
- 23:54Speaker 8: somebody tailing us?
- 23:57Speaker 2: Kid your lights right?
- 24:00Speaker 10: See anything at the back winded?
- 24:02Speaker 2: Wait a minute? How they go?
- 24:09Speaker 7: How did it look?
- 24:11Speaker 2: Good? Guys in the front seat? Could have been somebody?
- 24:15Speaker 2: What do you think, Jo? Want to look at you?
- 24:16Speaker 7: Well? Whoever it was, we lost him anyway.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, let's go.
- 24:44Speaker 18: Who are that.
- 24:45Speaker 7: Clear spot here in the fog?
- 24:47Speaker 10: Don't see your soul anywhere?
- 24:48Speaker 2: It's fine.
- 24:49Speaker 17: Were almost there now, Yeah, just around the corner, says
- 24:53Speaker 17: a break, isn't it? FOG's clear right in here? I
- 24:56Speaker 17: was socked in back up there. We're as safe as
- 24:59Speaker 17: you'd want to be. Yeah, yeah, that's right. This is
- 25:02Speaker 17: it over by the storage building.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Yeah that's right. Let's go.
- 25:12Speaker 7: Over this, great Joe, what's over there in that building?
- 25:16Speaker 2: We're not going inside, just over there in that alcove,
- 25:20Speaker 2: all right, they said, Joe, let's see the money.
- 25:22Speaker 7: Oh wait till I see the stuff. Huh.
- 25:24Speaker 2: You don't trust anybody, do you? What are you trying
- 25:29Speaker 2: to prove? Well?
- 25:30Speaker 7: I didn't like what he said.
- 25:31Speaker 2: You're not gonna like what I got to say either,
- 25:32Speaker 2: freeze mister?
- 25:34Speaker 1: What's it?
- 25:34Speaker 7: Then he ducked in this alcove.
- 25:44Speaker 8: Oh, take care of that one there.
- 25:47Speaker 7: Alright, easy?
- 25:48Speaker 2: Huh, yeah, you seem.
- 25:50Speaker 4: No, it's too dark there he is, all right, throw
- 25:56Speaker 4: your gun out ahead of you.
- 25:57Speaker 6: He's not gonna throw that gun out, Joe, watch it.
- 26:04Speaker 7: Come on, nurse's gone.
- 26:12Speaker 6: Yeah, I got it.
- 26:14Speaker 7: You want to shake him down? Ye on? Your feature?
- 26:18Speaker 2: What'd you get hit? I sure? Let me see you?
- 26:22Speaker 5: All right?
- 26:23Speaker 2: Just grazy. You're a cop, aren't you?
- 26:25Speaker 7: Yeah? That's right. Now, come on, let's go.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Where's this stuff on the back seat in my car? Now?
- 26:29Speaker 2: You tell me something?
- 26:31Speaker 7: Why? Just like Smith, I just wanted something I knew
- 26:33Speaker 7: you'd never give me. What's that? An even chance.
- 26:43Speaker 2: The story you have just heard was true? Only the
- 26:45Speaker 2: names were changed to protect the innocent.
- 26:48Speaker 3: On January fourth, trial was held in Superior Court, Department
- 26:51Speaker 3: eighty one, city in County of Los Angeles, State of California.
- 26:54Speaker 3: In a moment the results of that trial, all three suspects,
- 27:05Speaker 3: Kirk Arthur Harding, Horace L. Smith, and Lucille Marie Cosgrove
- 27:08Speaker 3: were convicted for violation of the state narcotics actor felony.
- 27:11Speaker 3: Harding and Smith were convicted on one count of attempt
- 27:14Speaker 3: to commit murder. They are now serving their terms as
- 27:16Speaker 3: prescribed by law in the state penitentiaries. You have just
- 27:21Speaker 3: heard Dragnet, a series of authentic cases from official files
- 27:24Speaker 3: and technical advice comes from the Office of Chief of
- 27:26Speaker 3: Police W. H. Parker, Los Angeles Police Department.
- 27:30Speaker 17: Stay tuned for Counterspy next over most NBC stations.
- 27:41Speaker 1: Welcome back. I love the under cover cases, and I
- 27:47Speaker 1: think that Joe Friday did a very good job being
- 27:51Speaker 1: flavora Blake Hagey, still doing what he had to do
- 27:55Speaker 1: to get the job done. Then, of course it did
- 27:58Speaker 1: lead to an excise and a little bit of suspense. Now,
- 28:04Speaker 1: some of you might scoff at Ben Romero's vacation to Columbus, Ohio,
- 28:10Speaker 1: but as my wife was born in Columbus, I'm required
- 28:13Speaker 1: to say that it is a wonderful vacation spat and seriously,
- 28:18Speaker 1: Columbus Zoo is absolutely great, one of the top zoos
- 28:23Speaker 1: in the country. In addition, it's very well possible, since
- 28:28Speaker 1: Romero had kids, that they may have driven over to
- 28:33Speaker 1: Cedar Point, which is one of the largest amusement parks
- 28:37Speaker 1: in the country and certainly had a great reputation, and
- 28:41Speaker 1: this was before you had all of the themed parks
- 28:45Speaker 1: in southern California. Of course, from my reading, it wasn't
- 28:51Speaker 1: necessarily at its best in the immediate post war era,
- 28:58Speaker 1: with some issues at the park that would be resolved,
- 29:02Speaker 1: but nevertheless a great place to visit these days now.
- 29:06Speaker 1: I did actually get a comment on the first run
- 29:09Speaker 1: through of The Big Bendel from Mechanic Fix six' eight to,
- 29:14Speaker 1: two who Writes lucille saved a cops life and got no. Break,
- 29:21Speaker 1: well first of, ALL i would, continue we don't know
- 29:23Speaker 1: if she got a. Break we're told the sentence was
- 29:27Speaker 1: as prescribed by, law and we don't really know if
- 29:31Speaker 1: there was any sort of leniency in the. Sentenccene and
- 29:35Speaker 1: certainly this type of thing also could come up in
- 29:39Speaker 1: a parole. Case and, also she didn't know she was
- 29:44Speaker 1: saving a cops. Life she thought she was saving a
- 29:47Speaker 1: drug dealer's, life and may have contributed to the survival
- 29:53Speaker 1: of a police officer in totally incidental. FASHION i, mean
- 29:59Speaker 1: if it had been a case Where joe had actually
- 30:03Speaker 1: been a drug dealer and the police had got onto
- 30:07Speaker 1: this another way and caught the. Criminals would you expect
- 30:12Speaker 1: a lighter sentence because she tried to save a fellow. Criminal,
- 30:17Speaker 1: well the position is this is a great injustice because
- 30:21Speaker 1: she accidentally saved a police officer while trying to save
- 30:24Speaker 1: a fellow narcotics. Criminal AND i think saved his life
- 30:28Speaker 1: might be a bit of an, overstatement regardless of Whether
- 30:34Speaker 1: joe thought he was going to be killed or. Not
- 30:39Speaker 1: and he didn't even have the chance to reveal that
- 30:42Speaker 1: aspect of it when he Called Ben. Romero the police
- 30:47Speaker 1: were still going to be there at the scene of
- 30:50Speaker 1: the drug. Buy and even without the, warning this Is Joe.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Friday he's not some babe in the. Woods he knows
- 31:00Speaker 1: that when it comes to making drug deals that this
- 31:03Speaker 1: is not something that's unheard of with drug dealers to.
- 31:08Speaker 1: Do So i'd say there's a strong chance that he
- 31:12Speaker 1: gets out of there alive, anyway but allow that maybe
- 31:17Speaker 1: being a tad more prepared might have made that sort
- 31:20Speaker 1: of split second. Difference so the information she provided in
- 31:26Speaker 1: order to save a fellow drug felon from being killed
- 31:31Speaker 1: might have provided some marginal advantage for an undercover police
- 31:37Speaker 1: officer that might have possibly potentially made the difference between
- 31:42Speaker 1: life and. DEATH i don't think it would be the
- 31:45Speaker 1: worst thing in the world for a court to cut
- 31:49Speaker 1: her a little bit of slack in the sentence, scene
- 31:52Speaker 1: as much as the law might allow at that. TIME
- 31:55Speaker 1: i think it might be a slight overstatement of the
- 31:59Speaker 1: value and the moral worth of this very unintentional good
- 32:04Speaker 1: turn to the. Police now on to some other listener
- 32:09Speaker 1: comments and, feedback and we have this From, rob, who
- 32:12Speaker 1: in his along with the check he sent for donation,
- 32:17Speaker 1: Rights dear Mister, graham thank you for your work with the.
- 32:20Speaker 1: PODCAST i listened to The Great detectives Of Old Time
- 32:24Speaker 1: radio and just started listening to The Great adventurers Of
- 32:27Speaker 1: Old Time radio. Podcasts thank you for cross posting them
- 32:31Speaker 1: SO i knew they. EXIST i enjoyed the araditional information
- 32:36Speaker 1: you include about the, actors the show, history. Etc that
- 32:41Speaker 1: really sets it. Apart and he ALSO i took our
- 32:44Speaker 1: listener survey AND i appreciate. That and thanks so much
- 32:48Speaker 1: for the. Feedback, rob and your comment about appreciating the
- 32:52Speaker 1: cross posting gives me some food for thought about how
- 32:56Speaker 1: we promote the other podcast projects here On Great, Detectives
- 33:01Speaker 1: BECAUSE i think that we have a podcast on the
- 33:05Speaker 1: amazing world of radio and even some of the older
- 33:09Speaker 1: ones like old Time Radio superman in The war that
- 33:12Speaker 1: would be of interest to more listeners than we currently. Rate,
- 33:17Speaker 1: again thanks so much for the. Comment and we have
- 33:20Speaker 1: another comment From mechanic sixt' six' eight. To two this
- 33:25Speaker 1: one comes regarding episode four seven Six Eight The. Big
- 33:31Speaker 1: blast as to your comment about not having a warrant
- 33:34Speaker 1: to search the, shooter's house this is THE thing i
- 33:37Speaker 1: often comment about. On, dragnet however the guy was, ON parole,
- 33:41Speaker 1: i think and police don't need a warrant as it
- 33:46Speaker 1: is a condition. To parole that, being said technically they
- 33:49Speaker 1: are supposed to have the parole officer present, good catch
- 33:53Speaker 1: and being on parole definitely raises issues and kind of changes.
- 33:59Speaker 1: The equation my limited research into the subject is that
- 34:04Speaker 1: it varies in some cases depending on. The jurisdiction in the,
- 34:08Speaker 1: exact terms the parle officer doesn't even need to, be present.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Just informed and we also have to keep in mind
- 34:16Speaker 1: that they were operating under the case law as it
- 34:20Speaker 1: existed in nineteen fifty one or whenever the case was,
- 34:26Speaker 1: originally handled so that might be one case where a
- 34:30Speaker 1: warrant was not the issue regarding the big. Case scene
- 34:35Speaker 1: harrison takes a little bit of an Issue With lee,
- 34:38Speaker 1: jones statement you have to feel good about letting a
- 34:43Speaker 1: man that probably didn't help his wife's mental condition by
- 34:49Speaker 1: always arguing with her, for years and feel good is
- 34:52Speaker 1: only a suicide and not. A murder, I mean I
- 34:55Speaker 1: guess lee well is statement about you have to feel
- 34:59Speaker 1: good good cash to. BE seen i think in a
- 35:02Speaker 1: lot of the Fact that Friday and ramero put themselves
- 35:07Speaker 1: so out on a limb and being certain that he
- 35:12Speaker 1: was guilty and going with these, BIG allegations i think he,
- 35:16Speaker 1: was saying, in essence the end result is the job.
- 35:22Speaker 1: Was done the truth, came out and we didn't have
- 35:27Speaker 1: to go through all of the things that come with
- 35:31Speaker 1: prosecuting someone and having to go through all of that
- 35:37Speaker 1: and to make this man's life away, from him, you
- 35:43Speaker 1: know whether that's through the death penalty or from life.
- 35:47Speaker 1: In prison it was a good thing they found the
- 35:50Speaker 1: truth and are able to clear someone who didn't commit. The,
- 35:55Speaker 1: crime admittedly the husband is not a particularly, sympathetic character
- 36:03Speaker 1: particularly to, modern LISTENERS and i think with good reason
- 36:08Speaker 1: if he ever asked the spouse of The year award
- 36:11Speaker 1: nomination was not lost in, The mail but judging what
- 36:16Speaker 1: happened in their marriage and the whole psychology of it
- 36:20Speaker 1: is kind of beyond. Their remit it's a question of,
