Latest / I Hate Talking / Why Stay in Multiple Hotels on Vacation? Nomads & Travel Optimization
Transcript
- 0:30Adam: Welcome to episode 129 of I Hate Talking.
- 0:33Steph: Hi, everyone.
- 0:35Adam: So we alluded to this a bit in the last episode, and I guess it will be the last time that we mention St.
- 0:40Adam: Thomas for a while.
- 0:41Adam: So if you're tired of St.
- 0:42Adam: Thomas, we are now moving on to other topics.
- 0:46Adam: But one of the things that came up at the very end of our last episode was how I particularly enjoy staying at multiple places during a single vacation.
- 0:56Adam: So accordingly, our word or phrase of this episode is nomad.
- 1:03Steph: Okay.
- 1:04Steph: Right?
- 1:05Adam: Because that's somebody that moves around a lot.
- 1:06Adam: Doesn't really have like a stable necessarily residence or abode or something like that.
- 1:13Steph: Yeah, I think that's what I would use it as.
- 1:18Adam: Yes, I agree.
- 1:19Adam: So we'll check the definition and the etymology.
- 1:23Adam: I think it's all usually helpful to have like a clearly defined word.
- 1:27Adam: Like we have these abstract things that we sort of know what a nomad is, but it's always, I think, at least personally, helpful to have like a dictionary definition.
- 1:37Steph: Yeah, no, I agree.
- 1:39Adam: So from our favorite American Heritage Dictionary of the English language, 5th edition, it is a noun, a member of a group of people who have no fixed home and move according to the seasons from place to place in search of food, water, and grazing land.
- 1:55Adam: Number two, a person with no fixed residence who roams about, a wanderer.
- 2:00Adam: Or three, one of a race or tribe that has no fixed location, but wanders from place to place in search of pasture or game.
- 2:07Adam: So it can also use be used as an adjective like nomadic or things of that nature.
- 2:13Adam: Yes, like the nomadic tribe move from place to place in search of food.
- 2:20Steph: But that's not like in reference to Norway, right?
- 2:25Adam: No, that would be Nordic.
- 2:27Steph: Oh yeah, okay.
- 2:28Steph: Because I like the Nordic Christmas decorations, right?
- 2:33Adam: I I guess you're probably more familiar with your own personal likes and dislikes of Christmas decorations.
- 2:38Steph: Well, I was just thinking that that was the same word, but it's not.
- 2:41Adam: So I don't understand how every word that we do, or nearly every word, goes through French at some point.
- 2:45Adam: It's interesting.
- 2:48Steph: I mean, is it just that French language has way more influence on the English language than we thought?
- 2:55Adam: Maybe.
- 2:56Adam: I'm not sure.
- 2:58Adam: So according to Etymology Online, it defines nomad and then says that it came from the 1500s from the French nomade, which did come from Latin gnomis, which means wandering groups, specifically referring to people of Arabia.
- 3:19Adam: So I guess the Greeks sort of had their home base, they probably were a little bit more fixed in their living conditions, whereas maybe the people of Arabia would move from place to place.
- 3:31Adam: So that is actually the description that they gave to that people group.
- 3:38Steph: And that makes sense, right?
- 3:39Steph: There are people groups um, either by culture or by necessity, right, that have to move around a lot.
- 3:45Steph: Like um, one of the examples was about grazing, right?
- 3:48Steph: Like once all your animals eat all the grass in that area, you have to move somewhere else so that they can eat fresh grass.
- 3:57Adam: Yes, there are some theories here that the Greek nomass or the yes, there are some theories here that say the Greek nomads or nomados came from or was adjacent to the Greek word gnomos, which means pasture or grazing.
- 4:22Steph: Okay.
- 4:23Adam: So basically people going from place to place looking for good grazing land or pasture or whatever the case may be.
- 4:31Adam: And that was even the first definition of nomad that we looked at was people are primarily moving from place to place to seek food, essentially.
- 4:40Steph: Right.
- 4:40Steph: I mean, if you have animals, but that's not a good way to grow crops.
- 4:46Steph: So these are gonna nomads are gonna be people that tend to grow, raise cattle or that sort of thing.
- 4:55Steph: Because you're not gonna have time to grow crops if you're constantly on the move.
- 5:02Adam: Right.
- 5:02Adam: Or they're just feeding on the wild grass as they go and consuming it, and then they move on to the next section that will have new grass.
- 5:10Adam: So that is our word or phrase, nomad.
- 5:14Adam: Apparently, we cannot get away from French.
- 5:16Adam: I don't know why.
- 5:17Adam: Maybe French has a greater influence than I realize, but spent a lot of time sp studying Greek and Latin roots, and it seems like Greek and Latin roots flow through French, I guess, but that it doesn't go directly from Greek or Latin into English, but usually has a hop skip through some other European language, more frequently French for whatever reason.
- 5:39Steph: Well, don't tell our kids because some of them are learning Latin and they're not thrilled about it.
- 5:45Steph: So don't tell them that you wasted your time learning Latin, also.
- 5:49Adam: No, I think Latin and Greek have a great impact on my ability to spell and sort of just know what words are if I don't know a dictionary definition of what they are.
- 6:00Adam: So I think it is useful.
- 6:01Steph: Okay.
- 6:02Adam: I'm just that's why I'm surprised, like, that maybe they should study French.
- 6:08Steph: Maybe.
- 6:08Steph: We have a lot going on though, we'll do that in the future.
- 6:11Adam: I doubt it.
- 6:13Steph: But we can go to fans.
- 6:15Adam: That's true.
- 6:16Adam: So, any particular thoughts or ideas on why I like to move from place to place, especially during vacations?
- 6:25Adam: Because I don't think I really do this when I'm living somewhere.
- 6:31Steph: You do move around every, you know, I feel like five years or so, you get antsy and want to move somewhere.
- 6:39Adam: That is true, which I somewhat attribute that to the fact that on average, as a child, I did move like every six years.
- 6:47Adam: Now, these were not like car country moves or anything like that.
- 6:51Adam: It was sometimes just to the next town over or something like that.
- 6:54Adam: But every six years or so, I moved as a child.
- 6:59Adam: So I guess as an adult I feel the need to move every six years.
- 7:03Steph: Yeah, I think so.
- 7:04Steph: I think it has a lot to do with it.
- 7:07Steph: I never moved growing up.
- 7:09Steph: My parents still live where they lived before I was even born.
- 7:12Steph: And I like staying put.
- 7:16Steph: But for traveling for work or not work.
- 7:20Steph: For traveling for vacation, I'm usually on board jumping around.
- 7:26Adam: That's true.
- 7:27Adam: Not so much for jumping around to pick up our entire lives and move somewhere else.
- 7:33Steph: So that takes me long.
- 7:34Steph: I don't want to do that every five years.
- 7:36Steph: That takes a lot more work and energy.
- 7:41Adam: See, I do enjoy a good reset though.
- 7:43Adam: I think I leverage a move and maybe even in a vacation as sort of a reset.
- 7:47Adam: Like you can purge all the stuff that you've accumulated over the past uh X number of years and start afresh.
- 7:57Steph: But you could do that without moving also.
- 8:01Adam: It's just not the same.
- 8:02Adam: It's like a forced reset.
- 8:04Adam: This forces you to reset your life.
- 8:08Adam: And it's not just stuff, right?
- 8:10Adam: It's people and activities and things like that.
- 8:14Adam: You can just have a fresh start.
- 8:16Steph: Yeah, it's true.
- 8:17Steph: It does force you.
- 8:18Steph: But I'm just saying that you can actually do that wherever you are if you choose to.
- 8:24Adam: Well, there you go.
- 8:25Adam: So in five and a half years, remember this, or even sooner, five years.
- 8:30Adam: You have to initiate a purge at our current house, and then maybe I will not be inclined to move.
- 8:37Steph: Well, the move here, it's been almost been a year since we started the move.
- 8:41Adam: Well, there you go.
- 8:42Adam: Four and a half years.
- 8:43Steph: A long time.
- 8:44Steph: It's been it's gone fast.
- 8:46Adam: In some ways, I already feel like we need another reset.
- 8:49Adam: The things are not where they belong.
- 8:51Steph: No, I'm just starting to get like situated here with activities and networks and planning some home remodeling.
- 9:00Steph: So we're not moving.
- 9:03Adam: That's true.
- 9:04Adam: We are have all our extracurriculars filled out now.
- 9:06Adam: So all the kids have their schooling and extracurriculars, and you even have yourself some extracurriculars.
- 9:13Steph: So yeah, we should talk about that sometime.
- 9:15Steph: But just as a little thing, yeah, I have my Bible studies and stuff.
- 9:18Steph: But I joined a dance club, so I go dancing every week.
- 9:22Adam: Right, primarily focused on ballet.
- 9:24Steph: It's yes, it's ballet, but it does hip hop.
- 9:28Steph: We're learning five different dances from all different uh like the mamba and hip-hop and ballet.
- 9:36Steph: Yeah, so it's a whole bunch and it's fun and hard.
- 9:40Adam: Right, but for your recital, you get to wear two-tus.
- 9:43Steph: We're not doing a recital, but we have some people in the class that are very adamant they want a recital.
- 9:50Steph: And I told them that I won't be bringing my family to watch because it's so silly.
- 9:56Adam: There you go.
- 9:57Adam: So maybe it's not silly for them.
- 9:59Adam: It's their lifelong dream to be in a dance recital.
- 10:01Steph: Maybe.
- 10:03Adam: So, yeah, I don't know if vacationing and having different places has sort of the same reset idea, but you did mention this last time that if we do go to multiple places, that it does not allow us really to settle into one place and therefore we're more mobile and don't really unpack and can just move on to the next location and don't have, if we stay in one place, as much to pack up and reset and do all those things.
- 10:35Steph: And you like that?
- 10:37Adam: I mean, I definitely do not like unpacking when I go vacationing.
- 10:41Adam: Like to live out of a suitcase, not put anything in the drawers, rarely hang anything up in a closet, unless I need like a pressed shirt for some particular thing.
- 10:51Adam: But no, I do not like unpacking or restructuring the household where you have to reset things, which was a necessity with little kids, and to some degree even with middle-aged kids, that you have to sort of child proof it so that yeah, less so now.
- 11:09Steph: But yeah, when they were little, sometimes we'd have to move the bed because they'd fall off or you know, block the stairs or something like that.
- 11:17Adam: Right, or put glass decorations from the coffee table into cabinets and things like that.
- 11:22Steph: We used to have to take pictures.
- 11:23Steph: We don't do this anymore, but when they were little, we would take pictures of the place when we got there, and then yes, immediately all the glass decorations went on top of the fridge or something.
- 11:33Steph: And then the last day I would look at our photos we took and replace everything back where it was.
- 11:39Adam: Right.
- 11:40Adam: So yeah, I don't know if that has something to do with it or or what.
- 11:45Adam: Now, there also is sometimes it didn't happen in our St.
- 11:48Adam: Thomas trip, but occasionally you'll get better hotel bonus points if you stay in multiple places because you'd either get the points for the stay plus how many overnights you're there, and sometimes if you stay in multiple places, you'll get sort of that bonus of the stay points, and it will accumulate faster than if you just stay in one place for multiple nights.
- 12:08Steph: Yeah, I think that works really well for hotels.
- 12:11Steph: It's a bummer for Airbnbs or uh Verbos and such, because you have to pay cleaning fees.
- 12:18Adam: Right, so it's actually the opposite.
- 12:19Steph: Yes.
- 12:20Steph: So you're actually paying extra if you're hopping around.
- 12:24Steph: Yes.
- 12:24Steph: So that's a little bit of a bummer.
- 12:26Adam: That's true.
- 12:27Adam: That didn't stop us on St.
- 12:29Adam: Thomas.
- 12:29Adam: But for St.
- 12:30Adam: Thomas, we really did have like two separate destinations.
- 12:33Steph: Yeah, we didn't have much of a choice.
- 12:35Steph: I mean, we could have stayed at like a resort on the main island to spend enough time on Water Island, we had to do that.
- 12:42Adam: That's true.
- 12:44Steph: It would have been expensive if we went back to Water Island three or four days in a row, like taking the ferry back and forth.
- 12:52Adam: Yeah, it would have been added up a couple hundred bucks, probably.
- 12:56Adam: I mean, just ferry fees alone.
- 12:57Steph: Yeah.
- 12:58Steph: So I think that's one of the reasons I enjoy hopping around is I enjoy resorts.
- 13:05Steph: Again, we didn't do a resort this time, but I very much enjoy the pools and the resort life.
- 13:11Steph: But I do not like sightseeing when we're at a resort because I feel like we're wasting money because you're paying so much for that fancy hotel and the resort fees and all that.
- 13:22Steph: So that's the main reason I like copying around, is like an idea that came in my mind was when we were in Hawaii a couple years ago.
- 13:31Steph: So to do all like the volcanoes and all that sort of thing, we stayed at like a cheapy little hotel so that way we could spend all our time sightseeing.
- 13:42Steph: And then when we were done doing activities and ready just to relax the rest of the time, we went to like a resort and gotta just hang out there.
- 13:51Adam: That's true.
- 13:51Adam: That was another thought that came to my mind as you were describing that was even before kids, our Hawaii trip, where we used hotel points, and that was also another reason that we had multiple stays, is we booked a higher-end hotel slash resort with hotel points and then use cash to stay at something that was lower end for part of that trip.
- 14:12Adam: So I guess from a cost-effectiveness perspective, maybe that's why I did some of those things in the past as well, is that you can basically optimize your spend using points and cash to stay at a higher end place, but maybe not stay there the entire time.
- 14:30Adam: So you sort of subsidize the trip by points and stay there part of the time and then the quote unquote regular place the rest of the time.
- 14:38Steph: Right.
- 14:38Steph: That's why I like doing it is because I feel too guilty spending the money for the resort if you're not gonna actually use the resort.
- 14:46Adam: That's true.
- 14:47Adam: And then I guess I did this even before we were married because I did a lot of traveling for work, and that was more for time optimization.
- 14:54Adam: Sometimes I would book two hotels so that the main week I was near wherever I needed to be for work, and then the final night I was closer to the airport.
- 15:05Adam: So I do that transition from wherever I was to the airport locality, and then stay one night in a hotel near the airport to uh optimize for times and things like that.
- 15:18Steph: Yeah.
- 15:20Adam: And sleeping.
- 15:21Adam: Because that way you don't have to get up as early to drive to the airport.
- 15:24Adam: You're right next to it.
- 15:25Steph: I guess, yeah.
- 15:27Adam: So it's all an optimization problem.
- 15:28Adam: I think that's what we're getting to.
- 15:30Adam: Maybe that is my epiphany.
- 15:31Adam: I do all these things to stay in multiple places for optimization, either time, cash, or points.
- 15:39Adam: And to some degree the travel time, because that's the same thing.
- 15:44Adam: It's sort of a time optimization.
- 15:45Adam: If you're going to be at a particular area, you can do all the sightseeing there and then transition to a different stay and and doing all the sightseeing next to that place.
- 15:55Steph: Yeah, I agree.
- 15:56Steph: I think that's a big part of it.
- 15:58Steph: Uh I mean it doesn't surprise me that it's because of optimization.
- 16:03Steph: That's a hard word to say.
- 16:05Adam: I guess.
- 16:06Adam: I probably use it twenty times a week.
- 16:10Steph: There's like a Z in the middle, it's hard to say.
- 16:20Adam: Optimization.
- 16:21Adam: I do not have any problem saying that.
- 16:23Adam: So I guess we have our word for next time.
- 16:25Adam: Maybe it's French.
- 16:26Steph: Maybe.
- 16:27Adam: Optimization.
- 16:29Steph: You're gonna have to talk the whole time because I can't say the word.
- 16:32Adam: Or you can practice it.
- 16:33Adam: Yep.
- 16:33Adam: There you go.
- 16:34Adam: You can optimize saying optimize or an optimization.
- 16:38Adam: So you also enjoy staying at different places.
- 16:43Adam: You've alluded to the fact that it's mainly for the destination thing.
- 16:47Adam: Anything that comes to your mind with like having a reset or the packing or unpacking, because you like to unpack at a location.
- 16:56Steph: I do.
- 16:56Steph: I mean, I don't fully unpack, I don't use like dressers or whatnot, but yes, I do like to unpack like I'll like make a charging station for all the electronics.
- 17:06Steph: And I do like put my makeup somewhere and like all the bathroom stuff and all that.
- 17:14Steph: So yeah, I do pull all that stuff out so I'm not having to put it back and forth constantly.
- 17:19Steph: I make a little section for where my toothbrush goes and stuff like that.
- 17:24Adam: Indeed.
- 17:24Adam: Uh nonetheless, you still let me have multiple stops.
- 17:28Adam: But yeah.
- 17:28Adam: And you like it too from the destination perspective.
- 17:32Steph: Yeah, I like it for um the practicality.
- 17:35Steph: Again, I love saving money.
- 17:37Steph: So that's why I like it.
- 17:39Steph: Is because one supporting you, and then second, I just will do anything to save money.
- 17:47Steph: So I'm good with that.
- 17:49Steph: But if I was a millionaire or something, like if money wasn't an option, I'd stay at a really fancy resort the whole time.
- 17:59Adam: That's true.
- 18:00Adam: I don't have we ever stayed in one place on a trip.
- 18:06Steph: If it's a short trip.
- 18:07Adam: If it's a short trip.
- 18:08Adam: I mean, if it's one night, like our Chicago trip, which we did a podcast episode about that, our whirlwind to Chicago.
- 18:13Steph: We didn't even spend the night in Chicago.
- 18:14Adam: We didn't even spend the night in Chicago.
- 18:16Adam: That's right.
- 18:16Steph: We spent two nights in New York a couple years ago, and both nights were at a different location.
- 18:23Adam: Right.
- 18:23Adam: We also have podcast episodes on that too.
- 18:26Steph: And I loved that trip.
- 18:27Steph: That was one of my favorite trips.
- 18:30Adam: But no, I think I guess for our honeymoon, we only stayed in one place, right?
- 18:34Steph: Yeah, we stayed in one place for a honeymoon.
- 18:36Adam: Though we didn't book that, so maybe if I had booked that or we had booked that together, I would have chosen multiple destinations.
- 18:43Steph: Yeah, because I'm thankful for it.
- 18:45Steph: But once we landed, we had like a four-hour drive and we got in at like 2 a.m.
- 18:50Steph: I would have definitely, if I was booking it, like booked a hotel somewhere close because we landed so late at night instead of having to drive.
- 18:59Steph: I mean, you don't mind driving it.
- 19:01Steph: I just slept in the car.
- 19:03Steph: Right.
- 19:03Adam: There were no restaurants and we had to avoid the elk, but that was yeah, I don't mind driving.
- 19:09Adam: You were hungry.
- 19:10Adam: All the Wendy's were closed.
- 19:12Adam: I guess that was before they were open till 2 a.m.
- 19:14Adam: or something.
- 19:14Steph: I don't know.
- 19:14Steph: You were just a long time ago.
- 19:15Steph: Well, we passed one and you were like, we'll go to the next one.
- 19:19Adam: Little did we know there was like that was that was the last one, yes.
- 19:23Steph: We didn't have like smartphones like we have now, but you can look it up.
- 19:26Adam: That's true.
- 19:27Adam: We had to go by the roadside signs that said what restaurants were off of this exit and things.
- 19:31Steph: We were super hungry.
- 19:32Adam: We missed one and then we said we'd stop the next one, and then there were none until we got to the major city center that we were.
- 19:41Steph: Oh man, that was a long time ago.
- 19:43Steph: But yeah, so I mean, occasionally we have like the summer when we went to Vegas and we stayed in one spot.
- 19:52Steph: But that wasn't just us, we were staying with other people.
- 19:56Adam: Right, and we almost even looked at the option to stay at a different place and like have one night just our family.
- 20:03Steph: Oh, right.
- 20:03Steph: Somewhere else.
- 20:04Steph: We had to get in earlier than the rest most of the other people were.
- 20:08Adam: Right.
- 20:08Adam: But we ended up just paying extra for our portion of the stay at the single location.
- 20:14Steph: Yeah.
- 20:14Adam: But we did look at staying at multiple locations even for that trip.
- 20:17Steph: We did.
- 20:18Steph: It would have been cheaper if we were the only ones going.
- 20:21Steph: It would have again to me it's just a money thing, it comes down to money.
- 20:25Steph: It would have been cheaper to book a hotel for one night for our family and then join everyone the rest of the week for the big house.
- 20:36Steph: But because many people said that they could come early if we came early, we were able to split the big house and extend that stay.
- 20:44Adam: That's true.
- 20:45Adam: Where are our books?
- 20:47Adam: We have our travel books.
- 20:49Adam: You know where those are?
- 20:50Adam: Like the picture books.
- 20:52Adam: I have all our trips.
- 20:54Steph: Oh, that's downstairs in the living room.
- 20:57Adam: You want to go grab them quick?
- 20:59Steph: Sure.
- 21:00Adam: Alright, so we have taken a brief pause that we'll have edited out, but we have retrieved all of our picture books that you have made for a number of our trips.
- 21:13Adam: So the stack is quite tall.
- 21:15Adam: Maybe we'll have to get a picture of it and post it.
- 21:17Adam: But there is Hawaii 2011.
- 21:24Adam: I think we stayed in multiple places.
- 21:25Adam: Yes.
- 21:26Adam: We did.
- 21:27Adam: Los Cabos stayed in multiple places.
- 21:31Steph: Yep.
- 21:32Adam: Sydney, Australia.
- 21:33Adam: We stayed in one place, but that's No, we stayed in two places.
- 21:36Adam: Stayed in two places.
- 21:37Steph: Because the day we landed, we stayed in Sydney.
- 21:40Steph: And then the rest of the time we went to Rudy Hill, the outskirts.
- 21:45Adam: That's right.
- 21:46Adam: Which that was a points thing.
- 21:47Adam: We booked that, stay in Sydney on points, I think.
- 21:50Steph: We landed in Sydney, and then we just did super tour, seasuff that one day, and then went back.
- 21:56Adam: And then our cross-country move.
- 21:57Adam: Obviously, we stayed in multiple places on that, but that was out of necessity because we were moving.
- 22:01Adam: We were moving, yes.
- 22:02Adam: The honeymoon, we already talked about that.
- 22:05Adam: That was one place, but that was not us that booked it.
- 22:08Steph: Right.
- 22:09Adam: We did Colorado as a family.
- 22:11Adam: Did we stay in one place then?
- 22:12Steph: Yeah, but that was with your family.
- 22:13Steph: Again, we didn't book it.
- 22:15Adam: Okay.
- 22:16Adam: So there you go.
- 22:17Adam: So you did another family trip.
- 22:20Adam: This was only in one place, so.
- 22:22Adam: But again, we didn't book it.
- 22:23Steph: It was with family, yeah.
- 22:24Adam: Yep.
- 22:25Adam: Road trip.
- 22:26Adam: Obviously, that was a another one where we moved about because we were moving.
- 22:29Adam: From one end of the country to the middle of the country.
- 22:32Adam: Another Hawaii trip.
- 22:35Adam: Stayed in multiple places and even multiple islands.
- 22:37Adam: Yes.
- 22:38Adam: On this one.
- 22:38Adam: So again, that was out of necessity.
- 22:40Adam: Did we only stay one place on each island?
- 22:42Steph: No, not on that.
- 22:44Steph: Because once again, we stayed.
- 22:47Steph: Um, we were renting a big location, and so we stayed at a hotel that first night and enjoyed the resort, and then we went to like the Airbnb.
- 22:58Adam: And then a different Hawaii trip.
- 23:00Adam: So apparently we went to Hawaii in 2011, 2016, and 2019.
- 23:04Steph: That Hawaii trip, I think, in 19, I think we were all at one place because that one killed me slightly because we stayed at a resort and then we spent one day, went to the volcanoes.
- 23:15Steph: It just killed me that we are wasting our resort time, but we were only there for a few days.
- 23:22Adam: Well, let's check the book because I think this cover photo was in a place that we stayed just one night.
- 23:27Steph: Oh, okay.
- 23:28Steph: No, no, no, no.
- 23:29Steph: So if I guess if you're wanting to be honest, this was not our choice.
- 23:33Steph: This trip, we definitely stayed in two places, but it was because on our way home we got on the airplane, and it took like eight hours.
- 23:42Steph: We were stuck on that airplane, and then they got us all off, and then they were like, you guys can't, you know, leave tonight.
- 23:48Steph: So they booked us a hotel, and so we did spend a night in a hotel by the airport.
- 23:54Adam: So is that this picture?
- 23:55Adam: This looks like when we arrived, though.
- 23:57Steph: Yeah, that's when we arrived.
- 23:59Adam: That was the resort picture?
- 24:01Steph: Yeah, I loved that trip.
- 24:03Steph: That trip was so much fun.
- 24:06Adam: I guess right.
- 24:06Adam: So we'll we only stayed one place.
- 24:08Adam: We stayed at the Except for when the hotel when the the yeah, when we couldn't get home.
- 24:12Adam: Correct.
- 24:13Adam: Interesting.
- 24:14Adam: But I think that we booked that entire trip on points.
- 24:18Adam: So we did not use any cash to pay for lodging.
- 24:23Steph: Right, yeah.
- 24:23Steph: We were pretty spoiled.
- 24:24Steph: And that was one of those kind of spur-the-moment themes.
- 24:27Steph: The airline had a crazy cheap deal, and you had racked up a lot of hotel points.
- 24:32Steph: So we just kind of went for just a few days.
- 24:34Steph: It was a pretty short trip to Hawaii.
- 24:36Steph: We did it because it was free, essentially.
- 24:39Steph: That was so much fun.
- 24:41Adam: Indeed.
- 24:42Adam: So there you go.
- 24:44Adam: Yeah.
- 24:44Adam: Our trend is like nearly every trip that we have personally booked.
- 24:50Steph: Pretty much every one, because fate makes us stay in multiple places.
- 24:54Adam: I guess, yeah.
- 24:54Adam: Every everyone that we booked personally, we've stayed in more than one place on a vacation.
- 24:58Adam: Unless, like you said, that it was just a one night stay or zero night stay, then we stayed in one place.
- 25:06Adam: Because you can't stay into more than one place on a single night, I guess.
- 25:09Adam: I mean, I guess it should, but that would be very unoptimized.
- 25:14Steph: And that would be going against my love of saving money.
- 25:17Steph: So we won't be doing that.
- 25:20Adam: There you go.
- 25:21Adam: So I guess our key takeaway then is that we'll probably keep doing this because we want to optimize for sightseeing and optimize for cost and points and travel times, unless it's a resort.
- 25:39Steph: What do you mean?
- 25:40Adam: Well, the one time But we've stayed at the resort.
- 25:43Steph: That was not our first time at that resort.
- 25:44Adam: No, but the previous time to that resort was only part of the stay.
- 25:48Adam: But I'm saying if we did not have airline delays, we would have only stayed at one place in that trip.
- 25:53Steph: Correct.
- 25:54Adam: So that was actually our choice to stay at one place, had everything gone according to plan.
- 25:59Adam: Right.
- 25:59Adam: But it's because it was a resort.
- 26:01Adam: Interesting.
- 26:03Adam: So there you have it.
- 26:05Adam: If you have your particular feedback on this episode, whether you think we're crazy or not for staying in multiple places during a single vacation, you can always let us know in a comment, email, or text message.
- 26:16Adam: Like I said, I think we'll keep doing this.
- 26:18Steph: Yeah.
- 26:19Steph: Or tell us what crazy stuff you do to save money.
- 26:22Steph: Because I love vacations and I love seeing the world, but we have to save money.
- 26:27Adam: Right.
- 26:28Adam: Or other abnormal things that perhaps you do while traveling for vacation or otherwise.
- 26:34Steph: Yeah.
- 26:34Adam: Well, there you go.
- 26:35Adam: And then we have our word for next time.
- 26:38Steph: Optimalization.
- 26:40Adam: Optimization.
- 26:41Steph: Optimalization.
- 26:43Adam: We can practice it between now and then.
- 26:45Steph: I'll try.
- 26:46Adam: All right.
- 26:46Adam: So from your friends at I Hate Talking, until next time.
- 26:49Adam: Remember, it is only through talking that we begin the journey to understanding.
