- 0:43Pollard, some of the coaches that's coming up here a little
- 0:46bit later on. We'll also be joined by Matt
- 0:49Poston's. We'll talk some Big 12 with him
- 0:51from Heartland College Sports that's coming up in the second
- 0:53hour of the program at 1:00 1/25.
- 0:56Sloane Paivo's Paivo will stop by as we will break down at what
- 0:59we saw last night in game one of the Thunder Spurs series.
- 1:02And what a game one it was. Double overtime victory on the
- 1:05road for San Antonio. And take a look at tonight's
- 1:08matchup, game one of the Eastern Conference Finals, as it'll be
- 1:11the Knicks hosting the Cavs. Nick, good to see you once
- 1:15again. What's happening over in your
- 1:16world? Well, a lot.
- 1:18Going on with the Cyclone Tailgate Tour, but certainly
- 1:21keeping up with all of these amazing games from all across
- 1:24sports right now, it's actually really eventful for I feel like
- 1:27May 19th. Absolutely.
- 1:29Is he had a lot to talk about and we will get into that
- 1:32certainly. And as you know in our business,
- 1:34the content business, any kind of content is good content, no
- 1:38doubt about it. Now, before we get started, I am
- 1:39walking wounded and Nick is seeing me right now last night
- 1:45with the thunderstorms. But little man, I was in the bed
- 1:48last night when I got back upstairs and finish up my work,
- 1:52finish up my Locked on Hawkeyes podcast for the day.
- 1:55And as I get there, all right, he's in the bed.
- 1:57Yeah, I might have had a scary dream or just the Thunder woke
- 1:59him up, whatever. And it happens from time to
- 2:01time. He's 6.
- 2:02And I like having a little guy in there from time to time.
- 2:04Not a bad thing, but for whatever reason he was kind of
- 2:07funky in there. He was a little shifted and I
- 2:10couldn't quite get comfortable. So I wake up this morning,
- 2:13everything's good, and all of a sudden as I roll over, I feel
- 2:18this twinge. Now I've had this happen semi
- 2:21recently, maybe like 6-8 weeks ago, something like that, where
- 2:25I felt it kind of hung around, lingered for a couple of days.
- 2:28It was not in the same area. This that I'm dealing with right
- 2:32now is immensely worse. I feel like I'm going to die.
- 2:35I'm like I'm the pain gets so bad at times that I'm I'm like
- 2:39sweating. It gets that bad.
- 2:42So Nick is seeing me right now. I have my arm in the air trying
- 2:45to just alleviate some of this pressure.
- 2:48I don't know if it's a muscle. I don't know if it's something
- 2:50with my shoulder blade. I don't know what it is.
- 2:52It's like back behind my arm. Now your personal trainer, I
- 2:55don't know if you I need to come to you and get some help here.
- 2:58I don't know what's going on, but this is awful.
- 3:01I don't know what to do outside of sitting here in pain talking
- 3:05with you today. Yeah, I am actually chuckling at
- 3:08the the arm in the air as we're breaking this down because it
- 3:11looks like it is painful. So I'm not laughing at
- 3:13necessarily the pain. It just kind of came out of
- 3:16nowhere. I receive a text.
- 3:17Hey, by the way, my shoulder is feeling it.
- 3:20I'm like, oh, OK, here we go. This is going to be, we have to
- 3:23get you fired up to get your mind off the shoulder.
- 3:25Are you generally a side sleeper?
- 3:27Was that what it was? I am, yes.
- 3:28I'm a side sleeper. I sleep on this side so on on my
- 3:31right side and that is the shoulder that both times has
- 3:35kind of been tweaked here. Getting old sucks.
- 3:37That is one thing that I'm looking Nick Maravitz.
- 3:39I well, I guess everybody's got to go through it, but good.
- 3:42This is stupid. I have a shoulder injury from
- 3:46sleeping. This is what happens, I guess,
- 3:48as you age right. Oh man and I I just got one
- 3:50right there. There's a good twinge that's
- 3:52happening. So I guess just keep it moving.
- 3:54Yes, absolutely. The only way to alleviate it is
- 3:56I have my my hand, my arm over my head and I guess that's
- 4:00what's I'm going to do for the next two hours.
- 4:02This is what it's going to be is just be sitting like this.
- 4:05I'm an idiot. Oh man.
- 4:07Well, Nick, that's that's how we kick off the show today.
- 4:10Welcome in. Thanks for joining me.
- 4:12Holy moly, that is so funny. I yeah, somebody needs to clip
- 4:16that. We need a we need a picture of
- 4:17the hand on the head. But the Bucks hat looks real
- 4:19good with the old logo, so I'm going to give you a little bit
- 4:21of credit there. Maybe.
- 4:22Maybe I'll turn the mental around.
- 4:23Yes, as we talked about last week when we were talking a
- 4:26little bit about jerseys and old school, yes, I am not a Tampa
- 4:29Bay Buccaneers fan. I do have the hat though,
- 4:31because I absolutely love this logo.
- 4:32I love the creamsicle color. So this is one of the one of the
- 4:35many retro hats that I have. And yeah, we went with
- 4:38Buccaneers today. So you can catch that if you're
- 4:40you're watching the show on YouTube.
- 4:42All right, Nick, let's get into it and let's start with games.
- 4:45Game one last night with the Spurs and the Thunder yesterday,
- 4:50I said I didn't give the Spurs much of a shot.
- 4:52Not in that game. I actually had the points in the
- 4:53Spurs. I thought it'd be a good game
- 4:55one. Thought the rust maybe it was
- 4:56going to be a factor getting Jalen Williams back involved
- 4:59into the mix for the Thunder that that was going to be an
- 5:01issue. So definitely had that component
- 5:03that I liked in game one just overall the way the Thunder were
- 5:06playing the Spurs. I am a subscriber to the theory
- 5:09in the NBA that there's certain steps that you need to take as a
- 5:12team, as an organization, the building blocks that have to
- 5:16happen, having to take your lumps.
- 5:17And I thought it was going to be too early for the Spurs to do
- 5:20it, but you saw it throughout the course of the game.
- 5:22Ken brought up the regular season and how during the
- 5:24regular season the Spurs had the Thunders number.
- 5:27It was one of the teams that actually had success against OKC
- 5:30this year and maybe that was going to be something to play
- 5:33that well, playoff basketball different.
- 5:34The regular season, I just wasn't quite there.
- 5:37But I'll tell you from the opening jump, you could just see
- 5:39that Wembe, the way that he changes shots, the way that he
- 5:43gets involved in your head. I saw it in the series before
- 5:46against my Timberwolves that there's just something about the
- 5:48guy on the defensive end. And then that doesn't even go
- 5:51with the the 41 and 24 that he had last night.
- 5:53But on the defensive end, he's so impactful in everything that
- 5:57other teams try to do, including some of the best things that the
- 6:00Thunder do. It gets in their head.
- 6:01And I thought we saw that right away last night.
- 6:04Absolutely. You see three blocks and it's
- 6:06not quite what you saw against the Timberwolves and you assume,
- 6:09oh, OK, it's maybe not quite the same thing, but there were
- 6:11multiple plays where he just impacted how you know, whoever
- 6:15it was, I saw the clip from SGA that was probably the the most
- 6:18notable. But whoever it was from the
- 6:20Thunder around the rim, his presence is very much felt.
- 6:24And so I was kind of with you when it came to the Thunder.
- 6:27I thought maybe they were just going to run away with this
- 6:30whole thing. It wasn't really going to be too
- 6:31much of a challenge now based on what I saw on game one.
- 6:35These Spurs look incredible if they can keep that up.
- 6:38I, I don't even know if I'm going to take the Thunder to win
- 6:41it all at this point. I mean, Wemby is really coming
- 6:44into his own here and it's fun to watch.
- 6:47No doubt. And the impactful of course the
- 6:50play of the game to be was that pull up 3 pointer.
- 6:52They were saying it was 28 feet. That thing was not 20.
- 6:55That thing had to be 30. That was just an absolute
- 6:58monster triple. You're down by three on top of
- 7:02it. It got a 2 for one out of it
- 7:03because there was still what, 28 seconds I think on the game
- 7:05clock after a nailed that 3, Porter ties it up in overtime.
- 7:10It just absolutely ridiculous. And Nick, I think you're like
- 7:13me, regular season NBA basketball, It's a tough watch.
- 7:16It's a very difficult watch to, to see on that front what you're
- 7:20going to get out of a guy, what you're going to be able to see
- 7:23out of a player. And I don't watch it.
- 7:28I, I just don't, I see the highlights.
- 7:29I couldn't know what's going on. It's very periphery that I'm on
- 7:33at that point in time. I knew he was good.
- 7:35We've seen that he's good. But in that environment, in that
- 7:38spot to step up in that kind of way, Stefan Castle was great
- 7:43early in the basketball game. He had other guys stepping up.
- 7:45But just overall, if you look at the way in the makeup of this
- 7:48team, but they're so young and, and you got to have a little
- 7:50luck to get 3 consecutive picks like they did as high as they
- 7:53did in the lottery in the way that that worked out for them.
- 7:56But boy, this team, they look different.
- 7:59And it in a way, it reminds me, Speaking of Oklahoma City, going
- 8:03back to the first time that we got to know Oklahoma City after
- 8:06the move from Seattle with Kevin Durant and James Harden and
- 8:09Russell Westbrook and that young crew, They in fact went up
- 8:12against the Spurs. And I think I said the exact
- 8:14same thing. There's certain steps you got to
- 8:16take, right? There's those steps that you got
- 8:18to take. They didn't.
- 8:19They ran right past it. They made their way to the NBA
- 8:21Finals and and it has to me, I know it's just one game.
- 8:25You got three more to win if you're San Antonio.
- 8:26Still, it has a lot of that same kind of feeling that these young
- 8:29guys, they're ready now. Oh, absolutely, yeah, No, I I
- 8:33think starting the series off this way tells a lot about where
- 8:36the Spurs are AT and gives them a real good jumping point
- 8:39because you start, you know, this series, maybe you lose by
- 8:4320 points or whatever. And it's it's it's one game,
- 8:46right? Like it's A7 game series.
- 8:47It's all about winning the next one in front of you.
- 8:49But this is going to give, I think San Antonio.
- 8:52I don't know. I'm, I hesitate to say like the
- 8:54hope because inside the building, I'm sure none of them
- 8:57assume that they're going to lose.
- 8:58I go back to when when I was in high school football, we played
- 9:02Clear Lake. I believe it was to go to the to
- 9:04state and everyone around town, even our coaches said, yeah,
- 9:08we're not. These guys are delusional.
- 9:10We're not winning this game, but all of us were like, we're going
- 9:13to win this game by 30. I don't know why everyone's
- 9:15concerned. So I think it's kind of the same
- 9:17thing where you're not going to say, oh, the Spurs now think
- 9:20they can win this series, but you have momentum on your side.
- 9:23That was just a phenomenal first game.
- 9:25From a fan standpoint. I actually like the Spurs moving
- 9:28forward, but I don't anticipate the Thunder going away.
- 9:31Going to be a great series. We are set up in that one
- 9:34tonight. We'll get game one in the
- 9:35Eastern Conference Finals. It'll be the Knicks against the
- 9:37Cavaliers. Knicks currently a 6 1/2 point
- 9:40favorite in that one. And we're going to get into much
- 9:43of the conversation also that we had yesterday.
- 9:46The rest versus the rest, yes, it was a 7 game difficult series
- 9:50for Cleveland. They were down three games to
- 9:51two, came back and won decisively in that Game 7 on the
- 9:54road. Now they take that momentum to
- 9:56New York, where Knicks have been waiting and they've been sitting
- 9:59there after playing maybe some of the best basketball that
- 10:02we've seen out of anybody at that point.
- 10:04They're out there playing at an incredibly high level, but they
- 10:07haven't played in a long time. And when you have that kind of
- 10:09layoff and just everything was clicking, every shot was going
- 10:12in, everybody was making the right pass, you can't replicate
- 10:15that certainly in practice. And you wonder about that
- 10:17component. Certainly I do for the Knicks
- 10:19tonight against the Cavs, who come in with that momentum
- 10:22trying to steal at least a game at Madison Square Garden
- 10:24tonight. And I think I'm leading like I
- 10:26did yesterday. I'm going to take the team that
- 10:28has been playing and definitely at least going to take the
- 10:30points with Cleveland tonight. I'm actually leaning the other
- 10:33way. I think you're just going to get
- 10:35a little bit of a a flat, tired look here and the rest is going
- 10:39to look really good. I think with the Knicks,
- 10:40obviously they're not going to have the same kind of gel right
- 10:44off the bat. I'm not anticipating, you know,
- 10:46a 40 point first quarter here or anything ridiculous.
- 10:49But I think as they get back into the game, they're not going
- 10:53to be, as you know, that they're not going to have jello legs.
- 10:55They're not going to be dragging themselves up and down the
- 10:57floor. Not to say that, you know,
- 10:59Cleveland's not conditioned, but certainly there is something to
- 11:03be said about taking some time, relaxing, letting the body
- 11:07recover, because this is a little bit of a long postseason
- 11:10and Cleveland just had to play more games to get there.
- 11:13I, I think it plays a small role.
- 11:15I I like the Knicks in this one, especially at home.
- 11:19Also last night, so we have this incredible game one happening,
- 11:22but there's also a game seven in hockey and though and not a big
- 11:25hockey guy, these are incredible game sevens.
- 11:29Just in general. There's something about the
- 11:30sport, the way that it plays out, obviously a winner take all
- 11:33situation and then he coupled with overtime and when it gets
- 11:36to overtime and that just sudden victory set and death scenario
- 11:40that you have, it takes it to another level.
- 11:42It's two teams that I know nothing about.
- 11:43It's two teams that I don't care about.
- 11:45I have no reading interest between Montreal and Buffalo,
- 11:48but it was compelling and it was difficult going back and forth
- 11:51because wasn't in the basement getting the kids down for bed.
- 11:54So I mean, it's just the one TV set up in our bedroom after I
- 11:57got the kids down and again, the thunderstorms had them coming in
- 11:59felt like every two minutes. But overtime, Gabe 7 absolutely
- 12:05amazing. It ends, Montreal moves on
- 12:06trying to get a cup for the first time since 1993.
- 12:10Montreal moves on an incredible environment.
- 12:12And again, and it's something that we've said often during
- 12:15this series, the amount Of Montreal fans in that there's
- 12:18something about that red that definitely pops.
- 12:20We see it at Kinnock Stadium. What Iowa State's in town,
- 12:22Wisconsin is town. There's something about that red
- 12:24that pops out there and he could definitely see, well, the
- 12:27Canadian fans in the building. Absolutely no, this is if you
- 12:31don't watch hockey, I don't I'm not going to hold it against
- 12:34you. Kind of the same thing we say
- 12:35with like the NBA watching the regular season.
- 12:38There's nothing wrong in my opinion with not watching the
- 12:41regular season. But if playoff hockey is not
- 12:44appointment television, we need to have a conversation.
- 12:46More importantly, if game seven playoff hockey is not set
- 12:51everything down and watch type of TV.
- 12:55Yeah, we we need have a little bit of a what do they call
- 12:59those? Like when you get everyone in
- 13:00there in the room and and sit down talk about the problem.
- 13:03I forgot those are called. I haven't had one yet, but those
- 13:05are those are must watch TV type situations.
- 13:09This one was incredible obviously in overtime as well.
- 13:12Shout out to the Canadians getting it done, but shout out
- 13:15to Buffalo for giving us a game. 7:00 to be able to watch.
- 13:18An intervention, that's what you're looking for, Yes, and an
- 13:21intervention, yes, definitely need that.
- 13:24You know, it's the same thing. I actually, I break this up with
- 13:25Ken from time to time because same kind of thing.
- 13:29I am not a huge tennis fan by any means, but like when
- 13:32Wimbledon comes around and we get a monster match up, it is a
- 13:36couple of big names in there. It's just about the competition
- 13:38at that point. It's about the competition.
- 13:40It doesn't matter the sport if you're just a sport fan.
- 13:43And that's the same thing with hockey because I'm not a hockey
- 13:45guy. But when it comes to the
- 13:47competition, you don't have to know everything.
- 13:49I know what icing is. I know what offside is.
- 13:50I I know those kind of things. It'll be the same thing here in
- 13:53a few weeks when we get to the World Cup.
- 13:55I'm not a soccer guy by any means, but it's the competition,
- 13:57it's the countries, it's everything that goes along with
- 14:00it that you don't have to know the sport.
- 14:01You just have to understand what that is between the lines and
- 14:05you get that definitely with hockey last night.
- 14:07Now Montreal now moves on and they got to take on this
- 14:10Carolina squad that hasn't lost during this playoffs.
- 14:12I mean, is this, is this thing over?
- 14:14Are we just automatically set up that this is going to be, it's
- 14:17going to be Colorado, Carolina, wake me up when we get to the
- 14:20Stanley Cup finals or at least one of these two conference
- 14:23finals, do you think we're going to get something compelling?
- 14:27We might I I like Carolina here, at least in the series, but I
- 14:31don't know if it'll be all that close.
- 14:33We're looking at maybe another rough rest situation here as
- 14:36well. Skill gap potentially.
- 14:39I am leading Carolina, but I'm not putting it past the
- 14:42Canadians to at least come away with, if nothing else, a few
- 14:45compelling games. I'm not going to say that
- 14:47they're going to get swept for gentlemen sweep here, not even
- 14:49going to put out a prediction. I just think they'll keep it
- 14:51close at least in one game. I like Carolina overall though.
- 14:55All right, we're talking with Dick Barvetz.
- 14:56He's hanging out with me today, the next couple of days with us
- 14:59on Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network as we
- 15:01bounce around. Going to talk some more Cyclones
- 15:04coming up here in just a little bit as we'll get into some of
- 15:07the big news items that came out of the tour stopover with the
- 15:10Cyclone tour in Des Moines yesterday.
- 15:12Before that though, what a jump into some baseball with you.
- 15:15The Cubs, they take it on the chin once again.
- 15:17They fall 932 Milwaukee new walk again.
- 15:20This was going to be a difficult 1 still team Pats aren't there
- 15:25yell it's just starting to get hot.
- 15:26You get concerned about that, certainly from a Brew Crew angle
- 15:30and in a game where he got Imanaga out there that have been
- 15:33so good, he just did not have it.
- 15:35Gives up nine hits in the game, 9 earned runs, just two
- 15:37strikeouts, gives up a couple of home runs.
- 15:40And this Cubs team, they're not circling the drain.
- 15:42It's nothing where you want to overreact to this point in time,
- 15:45but it's been a struggle after what happened over the weekend
- 15:48against the White Sox. Starting to go down, all those
- 15:50pitching injuries, maybe they're starting to catch up just a
- 15:52little bit. The bullpen had issues over the
- 15:55weekend and it's Milwaukee and we've seen this Milwaukee team
- 15:58year after year after year. They don't spend a lot of money,
- 16:01but the way that they build, the way that they draft, the way
- 16:04that they just put together A-Team, it looks like we're
- 16:07going to at minimum have a really good race in the Central.
- 16:09Once again, after just maybe a week ago, there were some Cub
- 16:12fans, I thought we're going to coast in, this thing's going to
- 16:14be easy. I don't think that's going to be
- 16:16the case. Yeah, When I was in studio, the
- 16:19tone around these Cubs, you, you've completely changed your
- 16:22tone looking, if my math is right here, two and seven
- 16:25through their last nine, definitely not on a hot streak
- 16:29after looking at what they did to the Diamondbacks and the
- 16:31Reds, what what do you attribute this to?
- 16:34I mean, are you completely out on the Cubs or are you just like
- 16:38hedging your bets a little bit? This is more of what I was
- 16:40expecting because the tone is very different.
- 16:42Yeah, absolutely. I think more than anything, this
- 16:45is the course of 162. And Ken, he starts to freak out
- 16:50like they'll be moments during the last five years.
- 16:53And the Dodgers, they're terrible.
- 16:54It's not going to happen. They go through a bad stretch
- 16:57and this is going to happen for most everybody, right?
- 17:00Most everybody has these kind of stretches where you're just not
- 17:02playing good baseball. In fact, that was the Cubs,
- 17:04what, the first week of the season, they were not playing at
- 17:07a high level. Maybe it was week two of the
- 17:09season, whatever it is that those are the lows, the highs
- 17:11and the lows that you get during the course of the baseball
- 17:13season. I think though, it's more than
- 17:16anything Milwaukee's starting to come on and that's where you
- 17:19start to go. The lead is now down to just a
- 17:21half game in the division. But I don't like to overreact to
- 17:24baseball. I don't like to one game
- 17:26encompass everything that's wrong with the squad, everything
- 17:29that needs to go differently, those kind of things.
- 17:31I don't think that's fair. And yes, baseball is a fun sport
- 17:35to talk about. And you know, Dick, I, I get
- 17:37this often. How do you talk about baseball
- 17:39on the radio? Radio talking about baseball, I
- 17:42think is the easiest sport because of the grand scheme of
- 17:44things for football, which is obviously our lifeblood, right?
- 17:47I mean, that's that's what makes the engine go for everything
- 17:50that we do is football. But on the baseball side, you
- 17:53can second cast so many decisions by a manager.
- 17:56You can second guess pitch selection.
- 17:57I mean, there's there's so many things you have to watch the
- 17:59games, you have to dive in and actually be watching.
- 18:01But baseball more than anything leads to that on a day-to-day
- 18:04basis. But when I look at things big
- 18:06picture, those are the parts that I don't want to overreact.
- 18:09And that's the difference between by Co host on that front
- 18:13because he likes to overreact to those individual one day
- 18:15circumstances that are out there and the Cardinals on top of it.
- 18:18They're just not going away. They're hanging around too.
- 18:21I don't know how they're doing it.
- 18:22I don't think that rotation is going to be able to hold up
- 18:24throughout the course of the season.
- 18:26But they can be a playoff team. I mean, talk about a huge step
- 18:29forward this year, even a wild card team for a team that looked
- 18:32like they were going to be a rebuild.
- 18:33I think most everybody had them last in the division.
- 18:35That was definitely not the case at this point in time.
- 18:38Still everybody in the National League Central above 500.
- 18:41This thing's going to be a race all the way to the end.
- 18:43I believe in the central. One final thing of baseball last
- 18:46night. So as I'm flipping around and
- 18:47trying to come down from the high last night of the Thunder
- 18:50Spurs game and how awesome that was coupled with an overtime
- 18:53game seven of the NHL, I'm flipping around and I come
- 18:55across well, I saw an alert on Twitter that a guy's got a no
- 19:00hitter going. I'm like, all right, MLB Network
- 19:02jumped over there and they cut in as we had a guy that honestly
- 19:08I never heard of. I didn't know who JT Ginn was or
- 19:11maybe it's gin. I don't know. 26 years old out
- 19:14of Mississippi State, made his debut a couple of years ago.
- 19:17He has had a a nondescript career to this point.
- 19:20Made 16 starts a year ago with the A's had an ERA north of
- 19:24five. Those guys got no hitter.
- 19:26So not only do we go to the 9th Eddie and got that and I just
- 19:29love watching baseball at that point.
- 19:30I think all of us again, going back to the sport fan doesn't
- 19:33matter if it's a game between the A's and the Angels.
- 19:35He just, you want to be involved, you want to see
- 19:37something, you want to see something historic.
- 19:39And for JT Ginn, that was the opportunity for him last night.
- 19:43And he gives up a single. So they're all headers over and
- 19:46then he gives up a home run and they lose 2 to one.
- 19:48I mean, you just talk about the brutality of sport that
- 19:52encompasses it right there. No, that is.
- 19:55That's about the turn on the dime that really sends you home.
- 19:58That is so unfortunate. I wanted to make a quick point
- 20:02about baseball because you, you talk about overreacting and, and
- 20:05whatnot. 162 games is so different from 12 or, or 16 or I
- 20:11guess it's 17 in the NFL now. Like in football, it's like you
- 20:14really only get to talk about a game a handful of times and what
- 20:18the team is made of and what the future looks like.
- 20:19Literally less than 15 times in some cases for college football,
- 20:23For baseball, that's literally 10 times the amount.
- 20:27And so you have to kind of extrapolate your thoughts.
- 20:29Out 10 times ever since we've started kind of, you know,
- 20:33breaking down baseball here, I've started watching a little
- 20:35bit more and we actually bought a radio, a true like dial radio
- 20:40last weekend. And I love throwing baseball on
- 20:42that. So I actually listened to some
- 20:44of the games. Baseball is just so fun to have
- 20:46on in the background. Then when you get in and
- 20:48actually watch the games, especially with somebody who
- 20:51knows baseball and they're talking about, oh, you see how
- 20:52he set up this pitch because not every pitch is the same.
- 20:56There's so much nuance to it that I love it.
- 20:57And then when you get into this no hitter and you're like, I
- 21:00have no idea what's going on, but this is awesome.
- 21:02And then a home run and you're like, wow, that really turned
- 21:06around quickly. How quickly it can change Well,
- 21:09as I try to get comfortable here, I'm still now finding
- 21:12nothing with my shoulder. I got absolutely nothing here
- 21:15now. So I've had my shoulder over my
- 21:17head, as Nick knows now for, I don't know, the last 22 minutes.
- 21:21And I tried to stand up at one point that made it worse.
- 21:24So that didn't work at all. So I'm back sitting down.
- 21:27So I got my hand, but my arms getting sore because, well, I,
- 21:31I'm not in very good shape. And just holding your hand up
- 21:35like this for 22 minutes, I mean, that can't be good.
- 21:37You don't have people work out doing this, right?
- 21:38This isn't something that's part of the routine you're putting
- 21:41people through, no. I was actually thinking at the
- 21:45start of the show, he's going to get tired this arm up forever.
- 21:48I was thinking, do you have like a sling in the backroom that we
- 21:51could throw it in and and just completely let it rest?
- 21:53That is, that looks like it's a big deal. 22 minutes is a long
- 21:57time to hold an arm up for. So I am almost at this point
- 22:00wondering it must really be A7 or an 8 out of 10 pain level.
- 22:03It's it's significant. Yes, we're, we're working our
- 22:06way through this. One good thing that I can
- 22:08control the mics here because I, I grimaced and maybe let out a
- 22:11groan time or two getting the kids to school this morning.
- 22:15I, I was really hurting and let out a groan and, and the look on
- 22:19my kids face, they, they thought I was dying.
- 22:21So that I know that's going to be fine.
- 22:22It's all right. Are you, are you, are you going
- 22:26to do anything or are you just going to wait it out and see if
- 22:28it gets better? I think I'm going to wait it
- 22:29out. I took some Aleve this morning.
- 22:32That was the first thing I took and then I took a little bare
- 22:35back and body. I just took that right before
- 22:38the show. It definitely is not kicked in
- 22:40at this point. After I took the Aleve, that did
- 22:43alleviate it a little bit and definitely still could feel it
- 22:46in there, but it was OK at this point.
- 22:49But it's back in a big time way. I'm struggling.
- 22:52So what do you do? Do you just go to like a, you
- 22:55know, a quick place? I'm not going to go to the
- 22:57emergency room. I don't think that's anything we
- 22:59need to worry about. No, not at all.
- 23:01Outside to send a big bill. And we don't want to do that.
- 23:03So is this just rest at the beginning?
- 23:06What do you say? Doctor Marvitz, help me out.
- 23:10Yeah, I'm kind of leaning towards resting and giving it a
- 23:14day because it was essentially an acute event.
- 23:17Let it find out what's actually hurting.
- 23:19Maybe it's inflamed. If you can pinpoint the
- 23:21location, front, back, whatever. If it persists, I would
- 23:24potentially look at a PT appointment, I'm a shoulder
- 23:27specialist and say, hey, this is kind of where the pain is.
- 23:30Maybe it's a rotator cuff issue, some sort of impingement
- 23:34potentially. I obviously haven't been able to
- 23:37run you through some exercises, but I can see that it's
- 23:39bothering you. Yeah.
- 23:40So I would definitely, you know, in the next few days start
- 23:44looking at all right, can we get into a specialist and see if
- 23:46there's a few exercises or, or some, you know, kind of relief
- 23:51movements that I can go through too?
- 23:52Because I mean, I don't want you holding your arm up like this
- 23:54for two hours for the rest of the week.
- 23:56Yeah, that would be good. That wouldn't be good.
- 23:58I'm sure we will make our way through it.
- 23:59I don't think it's going to be a big issue.
- 24:01But hit me up on Twitter at Trent County.
- 24:03You got any ideas of of ways that we could alleviate things?
- 24:06We're going to get into Iowa State on the other side.
- 24:09Jamie Pollard spoke. I thought a couple of headline
- 24:12items that came to him. We heard from Otts.
- 24:14We heard from also Rodgers. So we're going to talk some Iowa
- 24:17State on the other side with Nick Marvitz hanging out with
- 24:20me, old man Condon here today. It's Miller and Condon on the
- 24:23Iowa Sports Radio Network. 1230 back with you, it's Miller
- 24:38and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 24:41Trent Condon joined today by Nick Marvitz from Locked On
- 24:44Cyclones. We can talk some cyclones here
- 24:47and Nick as iPod, the music down, it's kind of hurting
- 24:51again. We're on the right side with
- 24:53that. I think I found something to
- 24:55alleviate a little bit more. Now this is going to be a little
- 24:58bit of a problem because I just unplugged my headphones while I
- 25:01tried to do this. But if I put both hands behind
- 25:05my back and if you're just joining, I slept on my shoulder
- 25:07wrong and I'm hurting today, if I go and have both my hands
- 25:12behind my head like this, it'll leave me.
- 25:15It's just a little bit. So this might be now I'm going
- 25:18with the the old school hands above the head.
- 25:20Almost the surrender Cobra is working out a little bit better
- 25:23to alleviate, but I also have to kind of lean back into it here.
- 25:26So this is working for now. I'm a disaster.
- 25:31I do think that's a good play because you can essentially
- 25:34relax the arm right and and let it hang.
- 25:37You don't have to hold it up. So I I think this is a better
- 25:41play, especially if you've gotten about 90 minutes left
- 25:44here. Did you get up?
- 25:45Did you get moving during the break there?
- 25:47The try to like rotate it through, that really hurts.
- 25:51That is really. Yeah, really feel it again, it's
- 25:54like in the back shoulder area, like a shoulder blade area is
- 25:58where it is maybe a touch higher.
- 26:00I don't know. We'll battle our way through.
- 26:02Look, I'm not digging ditches. We're talking on the radio.
- 26:05We're having a good time. And Speaking of good time, good
- 26:07time for Cyclone fans and a lot of relevant information that
- 26:11comes out yesterday from Des Moines as Alec Bussey here from
- 26:15KXNO and Cyclone Insider, he had a lot of great insight into what
- 26:19happened at that. I want to start with Jamie
- 26:22Pollard and some of the comments that he made because there is a
- 26:25wide swath of it. So have you recorded your
- 26:28podcast yet? Locked down Cyclones on
- 26:30everything that we heard. Not on the stuff that we heard
- 26:33today or or in this, you know, in this media availability.
- 26:36Actually I talked about the something that Jamie Pollard did
- 26:39talk about the Big 10 and the SEC potentially splitting off.
- 26:43So I'll go more into this this week, but not explicitly on
- 26:48these media availability yet. So let's start right there with
- 26:52that conversation and what Pollard had to say about if the
- 26:56big Twit, Big 10 and the SEC are going to do it, just do it.
- 26:58And not just for football, they're going to do it.
- 27:00Do it for all sports. The part of that, though, that
- 27:04Jamie Pollard, I don't think he's missing.
- 27:05I think he understands that is it's not going to just be about
- 27:09the ET teams from the Big 10 and the 16 from the SEC is they're
- 27:13going to add a few more. There's going to be more
- 27:15additions that come if that comes to fruition, and it's
- 27:18going to be going out there and getting a course in Notre Dame,
- 27:21a Florida State, Miami, Clemson, potentially, maybe the Arizona
- 27:27schools, potentially a Texas Tech.
- 27:29There'll be a few more BYU, maybe part of that mix.
- 27:32Utah could be a part of it. But what is left is the remnants
- 27:37of the ACC, the remnants of the Big 12.
- 27:41And at that point in time, what does that look like for the rest
- 27:45of those conferences? What does that look like going
- 27:47forward? Is it now the remaining Big 12
- 27:50teams? Which Iowa State would be
- 27:51amongst the remaining teams? We could be honest about that
- 27:54part. Yeah.
- 27:56You could have an NCAA tournament.
- 27:58And yes, you're still going to invite the winners of the
- 28:00Sunbelt, the Missouri Valley and everything for basketball.
- 28:03And you're still going to have the Group of 6 on the college
- 28:05football side competing. But what does that mean
- 28:08financially for Iowa State? And the money that they're
- 28:10currently getting from TV deals is going to look a whole lot
- 28:13different than what they're currently getting.
- 28:15And certainly when you're not striving to be in the College
- 28:18Football Playoffs, striving for a national championship as we
- 28:20know it, if you're not part of that group, your finances are
- 28:24going to look a whole lot different.
- 28:26Oh, definitely. And you know what it kind of
- 28:27reminds me of? This is not a perfect parallel,
- 28:29but it kind of reminds me of like the PGA Live split because
- 28:32it was so money driven. That's just really the only
- 28:35parallel. But it kind of has me thinking
- 28:37the same way. The conference realignment is
- 28:39the interesting thing. And honestly, before Jamie
- 28:41Pollard's comments, I was wondering if there was a way
- 28:44that Iowa State could position themselves and potentially make
- 28:47a move. I don't know if the SEC and the
- 28:49Big 10 are going to want them after those comments.
- 28:51I mean, it's one it's one comment, but it still it doesn't
- 28:54come across in the best way. Then I was wondering, can
- 28:57potentially the Big 12 try to Add all of the top ACC programs
- 29:02and force the Big 10 and the SEC to work with them?
- 29:06If you've got, you know, Miami, I saw the Ross Dellinger article
- 29:10talking about 21 of the top 23 schools in the entire country as
- 29:16far as wealth goes were in the Big 10 of the SEC.
- 29:18The other two being Florida State and Clemson.
- 29:20They can grab those. Maybe they can position
- 29:23themselves in a weird way. Ultimately, it's going to come
- 29:26down to I think this is going to happen.
- 29:28I do think that the Big 10, the SEC will eventually split off
- 29:31because, you know, we can get into the money numbers and the
- 29:34reasoning here if you want, But it's, it's, I mean, they're
- 29:37frustrated and I think it's going to happen sooner rather
- 29:41than later. And so it's coming down to me
- 29:43for how does Iowa State find a way to stay in this?
- 29:48Because Jamie Poehler talked about on the Spotlight podcast
- 29:52has been a few years now. He talked about like IRC could
- 29:54end up like AU and I they very much could fall into that
- 29:57position. And how do you avoid doing that?
- 30:00Or are you OK with that? Is that actually better
- 30:02financially? This this is very interesting
- 30:05time, and I do think that college sports are on the
- 30:07precipice of a major change. I think what you laid out is
- 30:12realistically the only plan that can work for specifically for
- 30:16Iowa State and the rest of the Big 12 is to go out there and
- 30:19Clemson to Florida State. Remember, Florida State sued
- 30:21their league. I mean, they say sued the ACC
- 30:23and that you talk about a fracture inside the conference.
- 30:26It feels like much like the Big 12 did 1520 years ago with
- 30:30Nebraska and Texas and the back and forth that was happening
- 30:32there. There's a lot of similarities.
- 30:35Then they made the decision, the ACC did that.
- 30:37All right, we're going to hand out money and you can make more
- 30:40money depending on what you are national TV wise.
- 30:43What kind of ratings you're bringing in as they made that
- 30:45dynamic? Well, that was a dynamic that
- 30:47Nebraska absolutely hated and most of the Big 12 hated at the
- 30:50time and would eventually push the push the Huskers out and
- 30:53going to the Big 10. It was because of that
- 30:56discrepancy that we saw and what Texas was getting in comparison
- 30:59to most everybody else in the league, them in Oklahoma who now
- 31:01are no longer part of the league.
- 31:03It's dangerous, but I think if you can make yourself no doubt
- 31:07about it, the number 3 conference, there is nothing in
- 31:10anybody's mind that that can argue the fact.
- 31:13We can go back and forth with ACC and Big 12 football and
- 31:16there's more name brand certainly in the ACC than there
- 31:18is in this current iteration of the Big 12.
- 31:21But if you can do that and do you have to give a sweetheart
- 31:23deal to the Clemson, a Florida State, a Miami?
- 31:27Still, if you make that happen, we're talking about a completely
- 31:30different conference and that goes hand in hand.
- 31:32Then again, with the sellable parts, the television inventory
- 31:36and the other components that go along, that is the way the grant
- 31:40of rights are incredibly difficult to get out of.
- 31:42And that's the part with the ACC to make that happen.
- 31:45Are we talking about something five years away, 10 years away?
- 31:48What rights are up for a bunch of conferences starting in
- 31:5020-30? I think the big 10/20/31, the
- 31:53Big 12, something that range 2032 for the ACC, maybe they're
- 31:56even 36. They're way down there.
- 31:58I think that's the path though, of making that happen is a
- 32:01realistic path. That's what makes a tough Nick.
- 32:04Yeah, I agree. And the other kind of Ave. that
- 32:07I was exploring was essentially if the Big 10 and the SEC split
- 32:11off and you're right, there'll probably be some sort of
- 32:13conference realignment. I don't know exactly what
- 32:15that'll look like, but let's just entertain the idea that the
- 32:18conferences look the same that they do for now for simplicity's
- 32:20sake, right? So you've got your Big 10, your
- 32:22SEC, and then they're now kind of like the NFL Lite version,
- 32:27right? It's like you you don't you have
- 32:28the free version of the app, you don't pay for the subscription.
- 32:30That's kind of like the tier that the Big 10 and the SEC are
- 32:33to the NFL or essentially like AAA to the MLB or whatever it
- 32:36would be. Then below that is where you
- 32:38find the Big 12 in the ACC, because it's, it's really not
- 32:42going to be the same thing at all.
- 32:43All of the Big 10, the SEC schools are going to spend a
- 32:46ridiculous amount of money bringing crazy amount of talent.
- 32:49Then the Big 12 and the ACC are going to be left with the rest.
- 32:52Could Iowa State become one of the top teams in that tier?
- 32:55Because, you know, as soon as a player isn't recruited to that
- 32:59upper echelon, to the Big 10 SEC, whatever that league would
- 33:02be, they're going to turn their heads to all right, well, what's
- 33:05the next level? That way I don't fall down into
- 33:07like the Group of Five or the Division two.
- 33:10Can Iowa State be a destination for those players?
- 33:13And where does the money come from?
- 33:14What does all that look like? But I don't like that position
- 33:17necessarily as much. I think it's something that
- 33:20it's, it's a lot more reliant on success right now.
- 33:23You can't necessarily move numbers around and move
- 33:25conferences or or teams around and that's your answer.
- 33:28You have to like win games and and find revenue somewhere to be
- 33:31that answer. But that could potentially be
- 33:34the position IO State finds themselves in where you
- 33:36essentially say, all right, if this is the situation, we're
- 33:39just going to be the best at the situation that we're in and take
- 33:42advantage of what we're given essentially.
- 33:45Football would be fine. If this plays out in this
- 33:47fashion, it's the SEC in the Big 10 breaking away.
- 33:50College football as we know it would be fine at the upper
- 33:53level. It would be the SEC in the Big
- 33:5410 battling, adding a few more schools.
- 33:57But you wonder about the deck sports.
- 33:58I mean, are you excited about an NCAA tournament that comprises
- 34:02only a Big 10 and SEC programs? I don't think anybody would be.
- 34:07No, that's why, yeah, that's why I bring up live in the PGA,
- 34:09'cause they still let the live players play in the in the major
- 34:12tournaments. Football would work.
- 34:14Football absolutely work and work in television revenue.
- 34:16The SEC and the Big 10 would be fine there.
- 34:18And not just that, what is a wrestling?
- 34:21Well, SEC doesn't have wrestling.
- 34:22I told you before, my great uncle, he was a wrestling coach
- 34:24at LSU. Well, that hasn't been around
- 34:26since the early 1980s. That was the last time that most
- 34:28SEC programs had wrestling programs.
- 34:31A baseball tournament. When you talk about an SEC
- 34:33invite between the Big 10 and the SEC for baseball, that is an
- 34:36absolute laugher that I don't know how sellable that kind of
- 34:40thing would be. And you go through just all the
- 34:42different sports. It doesn't work.
- 34:44It doesn't work the way that we know it and the finances, the
- 34:47money that comes in, we look at the contract, obviously the CBS
- 34:50and Turner give to college basketball what we get year
- 34:53after year. That's not going to be the same
- 34:55with an SEC Big 10 basketball Invitational for a quote UN
- 34:59quote, national championship. That's where the rub is.
- 35:01And and that's really going to determine all this, how this
- 35:04plays out because Big 10 SEC, you can break away for football,
- 35:09but the rest of the sports just aren't going to work.
- 35:11Yeah, and Jamie Pollard is, it sounds like in the camp where if
- 35:14you're going to break away, you're completely, you're not
- 35:17associated with us at all. Like you don't get to play us in
- 35:20all of these other smaller sports.
- 35:22And then what does that mean for revenue for, you know, I was
- 35:25trying to, I was going to say gymnastics, but obviously
- 35:27doesn't have gymnastics anywhere.
- 35:28So let's say like golf, right? What does that mean for golf?
- 35:31Because you're not playing probably any Big 10 or SEC
- 35:33opponents then. So your schedule looks
- 35:35different. All that money's going to look
- 35:37entirely different. So the best move for Iowa State,
- 35:41I don't think was Jamie Pollard saying, hey, you guys could just
- 35:44go ahead and leave. I don't know if that was maybe
- 35:47the best play, but Jamie Pollard is certainly one of those guys
- 35:51that he will just say what's on his mind.
- 35:53And I think it's pretty clear where he sits on this entire
- 35:56issue now. More from Jamie Pollard
- 35:58yesterday and let's go next over to the side of things about
- 36:05Saito. Now, you've heard my thoughts on
- 36:07this from the get go. I couldn't wrap my mind around
- 36:10it. I thought it was incredibly
- 36:11difficult to just understand how this works in a community the
- 36:15size of Ames. Think of the Main Street
- 36:18downtown community and what that's going to be for them.
- 36:21It was something that I've always struggled with, the
- 36:22finances behind it, how it's going to work.
- 36:25I've had Iowa State fans try to explain it to me.
- 36:27I still can't quite get there, but then some of the comments he
- 36:31made yesterday, still looking at tenants, well, that's out of our
- 36:34hands. I don't know it.
- 36:35It struck me as odd. At the very least, give me your
- 36:38take away from Cytown. Yeah.
- 36:41Well, just from my perspective as being someone that was in
- 36:44college when it started, I don't think anybody was really happy
- 36:48about it, to be completely honest.
- 36:49You're losing out on a ton of tailgating space there.
- 36:52And then they released the kind of look at what it could look
- 36:56like the the rendering or whatever.
- 36:58And it's like, oh, that's, I guess maybe a little exciting.
- 37:01Then you're like, well, this is could potentially be a thing for
- 37:03recruiting. And is there a way you can spin
- 37:05this and make it like a percentage of the food or
- 37:10beverages purchases here go towards athletic revenue?
- 37:13Is there a way you could kind of spin that?
- 37:15Ultimately, I'm not as enthused, I think, as some people are.
- 37:20And then being in towns for the spring showcase this, you know,
- 37:24just a few weeks ago, I wasn't impressed with the amount of
- 37:27progress that they had made. And that's one of the comments
- 37:29that Jamie Pollard made was, well, it's not going slow.
- 37:31Well, it is. I mean, it is.
- 37:33It's taking forever for this to go up.
- 37:36I'll be back in 2045 and they'll have three buildings up at this
- 37:39rate. So I'm not necessarily in love
- 37:41with it, especially with the amount of tailgating space that
- 37:44we're missing now. And it, it just feels like the
- 37:48best way to say is it's like separated now, like the
- 37:50tailgating scene felt like connected to the football area.
- 37:53And now it's just like a massive dirt patch and some people
- 37:55hanging out around that. I, I don't love it.
- 37:58I do think these comments are probably the best things that
- 38:01Jamie Pollard could have said in the situation that side town is
- 38:04in. But ultimately I would have just
- 38:06rather it stayed the way it was. Jamie Pollard also talked about
- 38:10the woman's program and Bill Fenley program there.
- 38:12We also got to hear from Bill Fenley, which was good because I
- 38:15was kind of waiting for that to hear a little bit more from the
- 38:18coach. Obviously the Parchers, the
- 38:19headliners with Audie Crooks and Addie Brown moving on, Jada
- 38:22Williams also going to LSU. So he had that component of it.
- 38:26But Bill Fenley, a guy that is beloved, I mean, talk about
- 38:29taking a program from the absolute doldrums of women's
- 38:32college basketball into what it has been, the consistency.
- 38:35But here from both Pollard and Fenley, I thought was good to
- 38:39get their perspective. But as we talked about a ton
- 38:41with football, same kind of thing with the women's
- 38:43basketball team. Yes, you like some of the
- 38:45pieces. All right, this kind of makes
- 38:47sense. I don't think we're going to
- 38:48have any clue at all though, how this is going to look until we
- 38:51get into that first couple of games of the season.
- 38:54No, absolutely. I do agree with Pollard's kind
- 38:56of comments talking about like he's one of the most successful
- 38:59coaches that Iowa State has had. I think it kind of gets slept on
- 39:02just how good Fennelly has been, because I don't know if it's the
- 39:07rapid increase in Iowa women's basketball success when Caitlin
- 39:12Clark was, you know, in town, if maybe that's part of the reason.
- 39:15But Bill Fennelly has been incredible.
- 39:18And so the trust that Jamie Pollard is putting in him, I am
- 39:21a fan of that. And I do think that's the right
- 39:24move as far as what this upcoming season looks like.
- 39:27It's just it's kind of like with football, like it's impossible
- 39:31to tell right now. There's zero and zero.
- 39:33So they could theoretically win every single game or they could
- 39:37also lose every single game. I have absolutely no idea right
- 39:41now. My guess is it's going to be
- 39:43somewhere in the middle, probably around 500, a little
- 39:45bit above that with Will with what Bill Fennelly is able to
- 39:48do. And he built this team out to
- 39:50his, you know, kind of vision. Doesn't have to base it around
- 39:53one single player. We talked about that with Audie
- 39:55Crooks. Like she wasn't a piece you
- 39:57build around. She was the piece.
- 39:59And now you can kind of go by success by committee.
- 40:02And you can bring in different styles and how they mesh
- 40:05together and all of that. I like Bill Fennelly's kind of
- 40:08plan, at least how it looks on paper from that perspective.
- 40:11But you're right, it's it's not ultimately going to be flushed
- 40:15out until the season actually starts.
- 40:17One other thing on this front, and I was trying to remember
- 40:20because again, getting old, it's not just shoulder injury.
- 40:23Sometimes your memory starts to fade a little bit and there was
- 40:27a time that Bill Findley had what was called a lifetime
- 40:30contract. Now, this is probably before
- 40:32your memory really started in understanding the nuts and bolts
- 40:35of things. So I finally found it was
- 40:38something it was like a, a program that was sent out to
- 40:40season ticket holders. It was called I on Sigh.
- 40:43And it was this newsletter that was sent out and I found the
- 40:47details of it. So this is back in April, May of
- 40:502007, and he was given at that time a 12 year contract
- 40:55extension. It paid him $10.6 million
- 40:58throughout the course of the deal.
- 40:59That thing expired in 2019. There was a contract extension
- 41:03that goes through this upcoming season that was given out a
- 41:05couple of years ago at that point, but I just had this
- 41:09memory of a lifetime contract. That's what it was.
- 41:11It really wasn't a lifetime contract.
- 41:13They said it because, well, it's a 12 year contract.
- 41:15That's pretty much unheard of in college athletics and and that
- 41:18was the reason behind it. But that was always sticking in
- 41:21my mind so I was able to get through it.
- 41:22But here's another fun thing. As I found this newsletter, I
- 41:25think you'll get a kick out of this.
- 41:26Again, going back to 2007. This is right in the middle of
- 41:31the first page Fans to upset submit ideas for football
- 41:35uniforms and helmets. Sliding a desire to return to
- 41:38the school's official colors for uniforms, first year coach Gene
- 41:42Chizik announced that ISU's football team will wear gold
- 41:45pants beginning in 2007. And that will not be the only
- 41:48change. So there's more a little bit
- 41:50later on, but how about that? 2007 Iowa State was all about
- 41:53wearing their school uniform colors.
- 41:55Yeah, times have certainly changed.
- 41:57I do like when it comes to the uniforms.
- 41:59You see on Twitter some people mock up with the tertiary, like
- 42:02the the blue. I think that's really cool.
- 42:05But technically from my stance of like where the cardinal and
- 42:08gold, I can't officially support the blue because it's not
- 42:12technically a part of it. That's the same camp essentially
- 42:16as black or white. It's just kind of like a color
- 42:18that works with the Cardinal and gold.
- 42:21I, I would, I mean, I'm the guy who plays Madden or, or college
- 42:24football and goes with like red helmet, yellow jersey, red
- 42:26pants, yellow shoes. I would die to see a game like
- 42:30that this upcoming year. Just like a big bold red jersey,
- 42:33white or yellow numbers, yellow pants, yellow helmet with a big
- 42:37red tornado sigh on the sides. I would pay good money to see
- 42:42them out there in that kind of a uniform.
- 42:44Well, submit your ideas. It's only let's see 19 years
- 42:47later than that newsletter came up with.
- 42:48Submit your ideas, Nick, see what we could get.
- 42:51We're going to talk to basketball, cyclo basketball on
- 42:53the other side. We also got to hear from TJ
- 42:55Otzelberger. We'll get knits.
- 42:56Nick's thoughts on that. Nick Maravitz hanging out with
- 42:58me today, our number one. He'll be back with us tomorrow
- 43:01as well here on Miller and Condon.
- 43:03Stay right there. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 43:05Network. Wrapping up our number one, it's
- 43:13Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 43:16Trent Condon, Nick Marvitz with me today.
- 43:18Nick, we're running a little short on our so want to jump in
- 43:22quickly. A couple of the other things
- 43:23that we heard from the tailgate stop in Des Moines yesterday.
- 43:27Let's start with us, talked a little bit about the transfers,
- 43:30getting kind of his insight into the five newbies that are coming
- 43:33in. Take away on that front for you,
- 43:35Nick. Yeah, I really like a lot of
- 43:37these guys. The way he talked about Jaquan
- 43:38Johnson, not necessarily replacing Taemin Lipsy, but the
- 43:42way he talked about him was really exciting.
- 43:44And his comments about Taj Manning I think are maybe one of
- 43:48the most exciting. Tremendous rebounder.
- 43:51We know how important that is for Iowa State.
- 43:53Felt like they lost every game. They didn't rebound well in this
- 43:57last season. I Trey Singleton his comparisons
- 44:00to Joshua Jefferson. How can you not look at
- 44:03something like that? Very high praise for Ottelberger
- 44:06on these transfers. Absolutely.
- 44:08Over on the football side of things, anything from Jimmy
- 44:10Rogers that you took away, anything that stood out from the
- 44:13football side of things. I mean, obviously missing
- 44:17another running back, not ideal. So I do think that we have to
- 44:21sign the Tulane running back that came in and visited
- 44:25yesterday. I talked about that.
- 44:27I said it's now or never. I don't think you wait on that.
- 44:30And now with another man down, just feels like it has to be the
- 44:33move that Iowa State makes. Other than that, quoting Mike
- 44:36Leach was certainly incredible. No doubt about it.
- 44:38Hey, Nick, Good hanging out with you again today.
- 44:40We'll do it again tomorrow, all right.
- 44:42Can't wait. Thanks for having.
- 44:43Me, absolutely. That's that.
- 44:44Nick Marovitz locked on cyclones.
- 44:46He can hear Nick each and every day talking all things cyclones.
- 44:50Coming back on the other side, we're going to dive into the Big
- 44:5212. JB Pollard's conference
- 44:54comments. How much do they impact the
- 44:56conference overall? From yesterday, we'll talk with
- 45:00Matt Poston's from Heartland College Sports Hour 2 up next.
