- 0:05I'm Miller Condon, our number 2. Welcome back to it with you
- 0:10until 2:00. Bottom of the hour, Matt post
- 0:12since Heartland College Sports on the Big 12.
- 0:14We'll make our picks before we get out of here at 2:00 and then
- 0:19we are off on Wednesday. We are off on Thursday.
- 0:21We'll be back. All the shows are back on
- 0:23Friday. The only local programming
- 0:25tomorrow is the first quarter with Heather and Alec from six
- 0:29until 9. Let's get Bama Bob in here as we
- 0:32take a look at some of these games, the four playoff games
- 0:35and a couple of the other Bulls sprinkled in.
- 0:36Bama, how are you? Doing good, Ken.
- 0:39We're getting into the meat of it.
- 0:41Next three days are good. No, they really are.
- 0:43No doubt about that. Hey, before we get into the
- 0:45games, one of the games I didn't put on the list to talk about
- 0:49because I just don't see it very, I mean, Trent and I are
- 0:51going to be watching. I win Vandy the Sun, the Sun
- 0:54Bowl won't get a lot of our eyeballs, but that's Gary
- 0:58Danielson swan song. So we should at least because I
- 1:01thought he was really good, whether he's working with Verne
- 1:04or whether he was working with Nestler.
- 1:06Obviously Bama, that 230 CBS time slot for the longest time
- 1:10was appointment TV. I mean, if if I were I was state
- 1:13weren't playing in that window, I would be there without fail.
- 1:15I just love listening to those two.
- 1:18Danielson had a heck of a career and it comes to an end tomorrow.
- 1:22Yeah, I think Ken, and I mean you correct me if if I'm wrong,
- 1:25but I think that 230 CBS is kind of what drew you into the sport,
- 1:30wasn't it? A.
- 1:30Lot of times, yeah, for sure. With the SEC and go, you know,
- 1:33and really got you into but I agree, Danielson.
- 1:37I, I, I think I said it before, right?
- 1:39I, I think the, the, the way he can point to it that he's doing
- 1:44a good job is back when he was the league guy for the SEC,
- 1:48every fan base thought he hated their team.
- 1:50Every one of them, right? LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee,
- 1:54they all think, oh, he hates, you know, he hates.
- 1:57And I think he was, I think he was pretty fair and balanced and
- 2:01biased or whatever. Now, yes, did he heap praise on
- 2:04Nick Saban in Alabama? Sure.
- 2:06But kind of a big run they had there.
- 2:09You know, there was a lot of praise to be heaped.
- 2:12But I always, I always admired as well his appreciation for the
- 2:16Army Navy game. He's called a lot of those and
- 2:17he kind of, you know, went off, you know, on that one, you know,
- 2:22this last one, you know, kind of gave his thoughts on the game
- 2:24and knew what a privilege it's been.
- 2:25But yeah, you're right. It's it's a little bit of a
- 2:28shame that this is the only ball game CBS has and not many are
- 2:32going to be watching it. I've always enjoyed the sun
- 2:36Ball. But I mean, I thought, I think
- 2:38the setting is nice and they always, you know, have a pretty
- 2:40compelling game generally. But we all know ball games have
- 2:43changed. But I agree, I think he deserves
- 2:45a little bit of a mention. I don't know.
- 2:46I'm sure he'll do a tribute to him as well and, you know, try
- 2:49to get some tears or whatnot. I don't know what else they'll
- 2:52do. Anybody else will be beyond that
- 2:54if there's any media pieces or the athletic or wherever.
- 2:56But he he has been good. And I don't know who I haven't
- 2:59seen. Maybe I have, I haven't.
- 3:02No, I haven't. Either play some yet.
- 3:04I don't know if he's been named, replacement's been named, but
- 3:06they got some big shoes to fill. No doubt, Trent.
- 3:08Let's get into the quarterfinals.
- 3:11We're calling it out of the of the playoff game.
- 3:14Let's start tomorrow night with Miami and Ohio State.
- 3:16Miami's getting 9 1/2 points. That's a lot of points.
- 3:19You made a point earlier. I agree with you.
- 3:21How are they gonna score? Yeah, right.
- 3:23How are they gonna score? How do you see the game?
- 3:25That's how I lay it out. I think this is going to be
- 3:27another ugly game. Maybe not ten seven like we saw
- 3:29the last time we saw Miami, but probably something pretty
- 3:32similar. The Miami defense is playing it
- 3:34at elite level. Ohio State I don't love
- 3:36offensively and I don't know if I love Ryan Day back calling
- 3:39plays because we see that's a guy that his butt hole puckers
- 3:42when things get a little tight. We see that plenty of times in
- 3:45the past. However, I just don't believe
- 3:47enough in this Miami offense that they can generate enough.
- 3:51Then they get a short field. Can they get a pick six?
- 3:53Can they do something like that? Sure.
- 3:54And I think that's about the only path to victory.
- 3:57I think it's going to be just a slow, methodical Ohio State's
- 4:00better. Miami can't do anything
- 4:02offensively and they get the win.
- 4:03Bama, Ohio State's been the favorite throughout the duration
- 4:08of this. They finally lost the game.
- 4:10There's just something about this team I think is missing.
- 4:13They've got great receivers. They got a terrific defense.
- 4:15Julian Saints had a nice campaign.
- 4:18I don't know what it is, but I think Miami's going to make this
- 4:21a game. Bama.
- 4:23Yeah, I think it all come, all is going to come down to Carson
- 4:26Beck. This is why you brought him in.
- 4:29We've talked about it a few times this year.
- 4:31He's a guy that can win you a game.
- 4:33He's also a guy that can throw you out of a game and which he
- 4:36did against Louisville with the four interceptions had, you
- 4:40know, if they don't win that game, they'd, you know, probably
- 4:42been in the ACC championship game, maybe a chance to get a
- 4:44higher receipt, a buy, who knows?
- 4:47I agree with you on Ohio State. It doesn't Have they just been
- 4:50kind of strolling through the regular season?
- 4:52That's that's the question. Now they've now they've got 3,
- 4:54they're going to have three solid opponents back-to-back to
- 4:57back. You don't generally get that in
- 4:59the Big 10. You don't have to generally run
- 5:02a three-week or three opponent gauntlet, maybe back-to-back,
- 5:05but rarely 3. Look, we know what Ohio State's
- 5:10going to do, right? If I'm, if I'm Ohio State, I'm
- 5:13going to I'm not going to let Fletcher run for 170, OK?
- 5:17He's just not going to do that against me and Malachi.
- 5:20Tony is kind of The X Factor for Miami, but Ohio State has
- 5:27athletes that can run him down, right?
- 5:29So he might get loose, but in instead of taking it 70 on a
- 5:33punt return or, you know, one of these, you know, flare screens
- 5:36or whatever, bubble screens, some some kind of way to design
- 5:40him to to, you know, get him into space.
- 5:42Maybe he takes it for 20 or 25 yards instead of 70 and a
- 5:45touchdown. So I just think that their
- 5:48offense, I'm with you. I haven't seen enough out of the
- 5:51Miami offense to think, wow, they're going to they're going
- 5:54to put up the 21 to 24 points against Ohio State.
- 6:00I think at a minimum that they're going to need to win.
- 6:02I agree on their defense and I think they're going to pressure
- 6:05the crap out of sailing those. Those ends are NFL defensive
- 6:10ends. They are, they are Sunday guys
- 6:12playing on Saturday or Thursday in this case.
- 6:15You get the point. They're going to be high first
- 6:18round draft picks. They're difference makers.
- 6:21You know, they're they're Michael Parsons type players.
- 6:25Is that going to be enough? You know, to get pressure on
- 6:28him? They're going to have to I think
- 6:29stop the running game and somebody's got to shut down
- 6:32Jeremiah Smith and those receivers and I Miami's got a
- 6:34good secondary. I don't think they're great.
- 6:36They're great up front. But if you give him time to
- 6:39throw, I think saying can make enough plays.
- 6:41I I think Miami, I'm sorry, I think Ohio State wins.
- 6:46They probably cover. I'm going to say, you know,
- 6:502717, something like that. I could see that.
- 6:55Again, Miami is going to need some help.
- 6:58Like you said, short field. If they when they get in the red
- 7:02zone, they're going to have to score touchdowns, I think maybe
- 7:05not every time, but a couple of times.
- 7:07They they can't just settle for field goals.
- 7:08They'll need something in the kicking game, whatever.
- 7:10I think if they if Ohio State helps them, I think they're
- 7:13going to have a shot to keep it close.
- 7:15If Ohio State does it, they're just the better team, more
- 7:17talented. In my mind, they've been the
- 7:19best team all year, even though they've lost the game and
- 7:21Indiana has it. So I think Ohio State wins and
- 7:24moves on, and I think they cover the 9 1/2 barely.
- 7:29Oregon, Texas Tech Trent, I can't wait for this game.
- 7:32It's the best match up and it's I.
- 7:33Think it is right? I mean.
- 7:35One's got defensive issues. They do well.
- 7:38James Madison ran up and down the field in the second-half, in
- 7:41fourth quarter, fourth quarter, second-half, right?
- 7:43I mean they they covered and Oregon still had their dudes out
- 7:46there. Not all of them.
- 7:48Some of them, some of them. I'm not concerned about that at
- 7:51all. I think this comes down to the
- 7:53Oregon run game against that front, Rodriguez in the middle
- 7:56of it defensively of Texas Tech Obviously what they have on the
- 8:00outside with the guys coming off the edge with Bailey, who's an
- 8:03absolute stud in the middle with Hunter who's just a behemoth in
- 8:06there. The Oregon offensive line
- 8:08though, for my money is the best in college football.
- 8:09I know Iowa won the Joe Moore Award and maybe it's just that
- 8:12game that we saw in Kennick Stadium that taints it there.
- 8:14The way that they move a very good Iowa defensive line is eye
- 8:18opening. If they run the ball, I think
- 8:20this is game over. I don't think they will.
- 8:22I go back and forth. It comes down to this for me
- 8:25though, eventually. Barry Morton, he was obviously
- 8:28injured throughout the back half of the season.
- 8:30He's had a lot of time off. If we see close to 100% Baron
- 8:35Morton, I think Texas Tech wins. I think he has to win the game
- 8:39for Texas Tech to pull it off. That's what I anticipate is
- 8:42going to be the difference in this one, and this is one I'm
- 8:45probably going to sit out. This is a live betting
- 8:46opportunity. I'm not going to play this one
- 8:48likely preflop. I'm going to have to wait to see
- 8:51exactly how Morton looks before I'm willing to jump in and
- 8:54invest on this game. Yeah, I'm with you.
- 8:55I think it's a great match up for a lot of reasons.
- 8:58The offensive line, Texas Tech's defense, absolutely elite on
- 9:01both sides of the football. And that is the early game on
- 9:05New Year's Day. Well, let's get Bama's thoughts
- 9:07on this one. Bama.
- 9:09Well, the the my biggest thought is I'm glad that we're going to
- 9:12get that Rodriguez is going to get the nation's eyeballs on him
- 9:16because let's face it, you play in Lubbock.
- 9:19I understand the Big 12 championship game, but that was
- 9:21against BYU. They don't they've gotten a lot
- 9:26of eyeballs this year. I'm not saying that they've been
- 9:28anonymous, but let's face it, he doesn't play in Columbus, he
- 9:31doesn't play in Athens, he doesn't play in Tuscaloosa, any
- 9:34of these big you know Austin, wherever.
- 9:37I think he's going to have just the game of his life tomorrow.
- 9:41I do and I think this is I agree with you and I don't bet but
- 9:47because I can't is the only reason.
- 9:50But the. Wrong state.
- 9:53Wrong state, right? I just don't think I have no
- 9:57feel for this. I have a feel that it's going to
- 9:59be just just a war in the trenches.
- 10:01I'll put it that way. I I tend to agree that I don't
- 10:04take a whole lot from that JMU kind of running up down the
- 10:07field a little bit. Oregon was never in danger of
- 10:10losing that game. So I think it's when you get
- 10:12into that type of an opponent and that type of a situation, we
- 10:15have such a big lead. You know, your coaches are
- 10:17always preaching play to the standard, play to the standard
- 10:20and it's just hard sometimes to do that against the team that
- 10:23you know you're better than them.
- 10:24I don't think they they probably think they're better than Texas
- 10:27Tech, but I think they know what they're facing.
- 10:29This is just going to be, I think it's going to be a line of
- 10:31scrimmage game. I know there's weapons all over
- 10:33the field, but I think this is a line of scrimmage and whoever
- 10:36wins it is going to win the game.
- 10:38I think turnovers, they're always critical, right?
- 10:41It's just it's a cliche, but in this one, you give one of those
- 10:44two teams extra possessions and that's where you're going to get
- 10:47in trouble because I think they're so this is a great
- 10:49matchup. I think, you know, and I don't
- 10:53really think it's a contrast to styles.
- 10:54I think they both have offenses that can put up points and
- 10:58they're both physical at the line of scrimmage on both sides.
- 11:02This is you're right, this is going to be fun.
- 11:04It's probably maybe the least ballyhooed of all of them,
- 11:07right, But I think it's going to be the best game you might be.
- 11:11And I think it's a great lead in to, you know, to the Rose Bowl
- 11:15and I don't have a feel for it. I kind of agree with Trent on
- 11:18that. I just I think it's going to be
- 11:20fun to watch. I think we're going to get a
- 11:21little bit of old school football here, you know,
- 11:25defense, special teams, field position, they'll score, but I
- 11:30don't think this is nothing down the field game.
- 11:32And I just I can't wait to watch Rodriguez play a truly elite
- 11:36opponent, which I don't think they've done yet this year.
- 11:39And I know the Big 12 is, you know, they're good.
- 11:41They're not great. But this this best team Tech
- 11:44Tech has faced by far. And maybe Oregon as well, though
- 11:47they did play Indiana. So I'll give him that.
- 11:49But I can't wait for this when I'm with you.
- 11:50This is going to be fun and. Lanning said the right thing.
- 11:52This game should be played in Lubbock.
- 11:54Yes, he would be playing a road game.
- 11:55Yeah, this is garbage. Get rid of this crap.
- 11:57Why is this game being played in Miami?
- 11:59And there's still two more travel games in front of it.
- 12:01Stupid. Get us to a 16 team playoff.
- 12:03First two rounds at home I think.
- 12:05We're heading in that direction. I really do just.
- 12:08Just think about this real quick, right?
- 12:09Let's say that Miami was going to Columbus tomorrow or or
- 12:12Wednesday, right? Great.
- 12:14We talked about the game in in Lubbock.
- 12:16That would be fantastic. That and Can you imagine Alabama
- 12:19and Bloomington IN on Thursday? Yeah.
- 12:23I mean, you know, Ole Miss in Georgia, that's an SEC game,
- 12:25right? It'd be fun.
- 12:26But I mean, yeah. We've seen that.
- 12:28I understand you have to play the Rose Bowl, I get it.
- 12:31But could you imagine again, Alabama, with all the talk with
- 12:35Sick Daddy about the SEC and all this kind of stuff, rolling in
- 12:39to Bloomington tomorrow. How crazy that environment.
- 12:41Would be. That would be off to.
- 12:43Charge. It's simple.
- 12:44You play the first round when conference championships are
- 12:46now. Yep.
- 12:47Take a week off. You play the quarterfinals. 18th
- 12:49and 19th weekend next year. Semifinals are on the 1st with
- 12:52the Rose in the Sugar Bowl every single year.
- 12:54That's the semifinals. Your championship the Monday
- 12:56afterwards. Next year would be Monday,
- 12:58January 11th, right after the NFL season concludes.
- 13:01On that Sunday you go to the national championship.
- 13:03You stay away from the playoffs. It's a simple fix.
- 13:06Who cares about the Orange Bowl and the Gator Bowl and all the
- 13:10other? No move on.
- 13:11Do the best thing for your sport.
- 13:13They won't cuz they're idiots. I've got nothing to add.
- 13:17I wish I had an opinion on this. You know, I really wish one of
- 13:21these days, one of these days, what's your opinion?
- 13:23Let it out all. Right, let's let's go to that
- 13:26Rose Bowl that we talked about. No, it won't be in Bloomington.
- 13:28It'll be in Pasadena, perhaps under the rain.
- 13:31There was forecast Alabama Indiana tread Condon numbers
- 13:35about a touchdown most places 6 1/2 you can find.
- 13:38Bam. I haven't said it to you.
- 13:39I've said it to our audience a couple of different times.
- 13:41If you took away the emblems, you took away Alabama versus
- 13:44Indiana. This is Big 10 champion versus
- 13:466th place SEC team. Indiana's favored by two
- 13:49touchdowns, not one. I think this thing could get out
- 13:52of hand. I think it get ugly.
- 13:54Alabama, great comeback, nice win on the road against
- 13:56Oklahoma. They're just not playing very
- 13:58good football. Indiana, they remember all the
- 14:00crap that was spewed by SEC wonks, including your boy down
- 14:03there in Alabama. They are going to be ready for
- 14:06this one and I think Indiana cruises.
- 14:10I think it could get that way. I don't believe it will.
- 14:14Yeah. Listen, this is what this is who
- 14:16Indiana wanted, right? This is who they've wanted.
- 14:18They say they wanted last, not just an SEC team.
- 14:21They want Alabama. Now, Georgia has probably taken
- 14:25the man on. By the way, I'd argue that
- 14:26Alabama is the 2nd place team in the SEC, not this second, but
- 14:29we'll just that's a different day.
- 14:33Georgia's kind of taken the mantle from saving, right?
- 14:35Even before he retired. They won the back-to-back
- 14:37national championships. You know, they're #3 this year
- 14:41with the one loss. So Georgia is now the standard
- 14:44in the SEC. In the last three to five years,
- 14:47Alabama was it for 10 to 15 years, right?
- 14:49And everybody got tired of them. Everything else.
- 14:51This is who Indiana wants. I think they've got it.
- 14:55I think they're going to have to try to control their emotion a
- 14:58little bit because they're going to be so amped up to finally get
- 15:02them. I think they're going to be a
- 15:04little bit surprised at how good they are up front.
- 15:07But this, this is where and I've seen all the numbers, everybody
- 15:09down here trying to say, well, look at Mendoza's numbers
- 15:11against good teams and against Oregon, against Iowa and how
- 15:14he's Penn State, how he struggle and he racks up all the numbers,
- 15:18you know, against the the mutts of the big 10.
- 15:21Ain't buying that, right? The guy he's he's and yes, the
- 15:25numbers are the numbers. I understand this is a complete
- 15:28football team that Signetti has that he's built there.
- 15:31And I've said it a couple of times.
- 15:34The most impressive thing to me was how they beat Ohio State in
- 15:37the Big 10 championship game. They didn't have to go up and
- 15:39down the field 45 to 44, whatever it was to beat them,
- 15:42they out they out slugged them. And I didn't think you could do
- 15:46that to Ohio State and they did it.
- 15:49Alabama, the absolute. There's two keys for them.
- 15:53Obviously turnovers again, right, You can't.
- 15:56They're going to have to generate momentum.
- 15:58They are going to have to run the ball and I don't know how
- 16:00they're going to do it because they haven't been able to do it
- 16:02all season. This is what you are right now
- 16:04if you're if Ty Simpson throws the ball 30 to 35 times, they do
- 16:08get blown out. I think look, there's I don't
- 16:13know of a weakness at Indiana has and we're going to find out
- 16:16tomorrow and unless Indiana's they have earned that number one
- 16:21seed. They earned it from last year
- 16:23and then again this year. They followed it up right.
- 16:25It's kind of like a skins game. They validated it.
- 16:28They've beaten they've beaten Ohio State, they've beaten
- 16:31Oregon. Alabama had the nice run in the
- 16:33middle. The best I ain't the best win of
- 16:35the season. The regular season was going
- 16:37into Athens and beaten Georgia about for anybody.
- 16:40You're not going to find a better win at the time.
- 16:44But look, they're going to have to figure something out.
- 16:48And I think India is going to have to help them a little bit.
- 16:51If this game gets, if it's, you know, 10 to nothing, 13,
- 16:55nothing, 14, gosh forbid if it's 17 to nothing like it was in
- 16:59Oklahoma, it's over. Indiana's not going to hand
- 17:03them, you know, a dropped punt, a stupid play, a pick 6.
- 17:07I don't think they're going to get that, but I think Alabama
- 17:10will hang around. Indiana is a better team.
- 17:14Alabama has some players that can hurt you.
- 17:17Ryan Williams is another guy. He has got to catch the freaking
- 17:21football. If they had.
- 17:22A bad year, Bama. He has had a bad year with drops
- 17:25and it has infected the entire team all season.
- 17:29Jeremy Bernard's got to play better.
- 17:32They're going to have to figure out ways to get these guys open
- 17:35and protect Ty Simpson. And they've struggled to do
- 17:38that. And he gets happy feet in the
- 17:40last five or six weeks. You can look at it.
- 17:43Herbstreak broke it down. He gets happy feet back there.
- 17:46I think Indiana wins. I think they cut.
- 17:48I don't know what the line is. You said about a touchdown.
- 17:50I think they probably, yeah, I think they're going to cover
- 17:53that. It wouldn't stun me if Alabama
- 17:56were to win, but it would, it would surprise me a lot.
- 17:58Indiana's a better team. Never thought I'd say that when
- 18:00Indiana and Alabama play line up in the Rose Bowl that that
- 18:04Indiana will be the better team. But they are, and now's their
- 18:07chance. All the talk and everything
- 18:08else, shut up, go out and prove it.
- 18:10I'll tell you, when they looked looked to me like that, I was
- 18:14dead wrong on this team. Remember when they beat Illinois
- 18:16and I loved Illinois? Yeah, And they beat him 63 to
- 18:2010. Oh, yeah.
- 18:21Yoi, let's go to the the Nightcaps, the Sugar Bowl TC.
- 18:25Yeah, I mean, just because it's a a game that we already saw,
- 18:29it's an all SEC matchup. It just OK, it doesn't feel like
- 18:32a playoff game. And Chambliss was so good during
- 18:35the beginning of that game going back to was October 18th when
- 18:39these two teams faced off until the fourth quarter.
- 18:41He went one of 10 for one yard in the fourth quarter.
- 18:44Felt like Georgia salt him. And this Georgia defense is a
- 18:47whole lot better than it was in the middle of October.
- 18:49I think Georgia cruises. That's the game that Kirby Smart
- 18:53got the time out or what? There was a time.
- 18:55That was the Auburn game. That was the Auburn game, Yeah.
- 18:57That was in, yeah, where he said he was.
- 19:01That was in Jordan Hair. OK, All right.
- 19:03Well, this game. Your thoughts on this rematch?
- 19:07Hard for me to get excited. If Lane Kiffin were there, I
- 19:10would give. I understand why Cesarean is
- 19:14going to call place. His time's got to be being split
- 19:17right now. Golding is trying to and maybe
- 19:20he can tighten up the defense a little bit.
- 19:22This is all about experience for me.
- 19:25It's all about coaching staff. For me, it's in, it's in New
- 19:28Orleans. I think both teams are going to
- 19:30have a good turn out there. I don't know that it'll be 5050,
- 19:34maybe 6040 Georgia. But listen again, this, this is
- 19:39where I think the loss of Kiffin really shows up and bites them.
- 19:42Again, hard for me to get excited about it because we have
- 19:45seen it. They can never get over the big
- 19:49the the real Ole Miss with Kiffin can never get over the
- 19:51hump of, you know, an Alabama or Georgia are really a good good
- 19:55team, top five team and I don't think it's going to happen
- 19:58tomorrow without him. Could be surprised Gunner
- 20:02Stockton just he just wins. He just goes out and does what
- 20:04you have to do to win And and I think they just move on and.
- 20:08And set up a really nice match up for the semi final with Ohio.
- 20:12State and we will talk. About that big time.
- 20:14Yeah, we'll talk about that next week.
- 20:16We'll recap these games. Oh well then our final minute.
- 20:19Is there one other game, Trent, that you're looking at one of
- 20:21the non playoff game? I would love to get Bama's
- 20:24perspective on Vanderbilt. Iowa.
- 20:25All right, Fire away, Bama. Yeah, I think it's going to be
- 20:28exciting. I mean, Bobby is going to play.
- 20:30I don't know if he's going to play the whole game.
- 20:31That's going to be interesting to me, OK?
- 20:34He's going to bring some excitement to this game.
- 20:35He's going to bring eyeballs to this game that nobody would have
- 20:37paid attention to otherwise. Stowers is missing.
- 20:41That's going to hurt him. He's he's a safety blanket and
- 20:44for good reason. He's a top.
- 20:46He's probably a top ten pick in the draft.
- 20:48But listen, you're going to you're going to see him.
- 20:52The Iowa fans are getting an up close view of what everybody in
- 20:54the SEC has seen with this guy. He's tough, he's brash.
- 20:59He will, you know, he'll, he'll hand you the ball a couple
- 21:01times. You know, he'll fumble.
- 21:03He'll he'll make a dumb play, but he will frustrate the crap
- 21:07out of you too. They're going to have to be
- 21:08disciplined. But I think it's just it's a
- 21:10fun, exciting game for Iowa fans to get to see this guy up close.
- 21:15He's not an NFL quarterback, but boy, he's really good in college
- 21:17and he will frustrate the crap out of you and do not let him go
- 21:21off because you will hate him because he'll start, you'll
- 21:24start yapping and everything else.
- 21:27But it's it's it's he's going to bring a lot of excitement to
- 21:29what could otherwise just be a dull ball game.
- 21:32Any you? Guys, have an opinion on
- 21:34Michigan Texas at all? Not really.
- 21:36It's hard. So many of these games, it's
- 21:38just. Hard Yeah, tonight we've got.
- 21:40To bring, I like the quarterbacks right.
- 21:42You got Underwood and Manning right.
- 21:43Both of them were that's an angle, maybe the maybe the best
- 21:47quarterback matchup in the bowl season, you know, outside the
- 21:50playoffs, right, of two guys who were Heisman guys going in.
- 21:54Underwood never approached it. Manning had a, you know, poor
- 21:57season, I think by his standards.
- 21:59But yeah, they're both coming back.
- 22:01So let them face off with each other and, and see where we go.
- 22:04So I think that's, that's probably the and they're just, I
- 22:07mean, they're two brands, right? I mean two of the top, what, 567
- 22:11brands in in the sport. So I think Michigan's going to
- 22:14just welcome the distraction for everything that's going on there
- 22:17in the last three. Weeks.
- 22:18Isn't that the truth? Bam.
- 22:19We'll talk to you on Friday. Thank you buddy.
- 22:21Enjoy it guys, happy. New Year, take care, Thank.
- 22:23You thank you all. Right Bam and Bob.
- 22:25As we check in on college football, we'll check on the Big
- 22:2812 with Matt Poston's. He will join Trenton I, Nexus,
- 22:31Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 22:35All right, Mallory Condon just passed 130.
- 22:36Our pick's still to come. Top of the hour off the bench.
- 22:39Sean Roberts, Connor Ferguson, I believe Lucas still off.
- 22:44One more day. Let's get to Matt Post.
- 22:47He's snowboarding. That's what he's doing in Iowa,
- 22:50no? Colorado.
- 22:52Good for him. Matt Post is Heartland College
- 22:55Sports. He knows that we have to have
- 22:57his picks in right. Yes, good.
- 22:59Hello Matt Postons, how are you? Happy new year Heartland College
- 23:02Sports recovers the Big 12. How are you, Matt?
- 23:05I'm good. I'm not snowboarding.
- 23:07Well, we're we're grateful for that because we get to spend
- 23:09some time with you and a lot of ground to cover with you.
- 23:11I want to get to Texas Tech, obviously, and what lies ahead
- 23:15is they're going to face Oregon. But I just got to get your take
- 23:17on the uncharted territory that we're in, quite honestly, when
- 23:21it comes to the portal. I mean, two teams that you and
- 23:24the staff over at Heartland College Sports in Oklahoma State
- 23:26and Iowa State have a combined, but we've got to be approaching
- 23:2990 between those two schools that are in the portal.
- 23:32Never heard of anything like this before.
- 23:34I'm not saying we won't again, but that's where we're at, Matt.
- 23:38Yeah, I mean, this is part and parcel of coaching changes now
- 23:41in college football. You know, when you when you
- 23:44change over your head coach and you change over your staff, you
- 23:46know, the expectation is that you're probably going to turn
- 23:49over at least half your roster. I remember when Dion took over
- 23:52in Colorado, I want to say they probably turned over about 2/3
- 23:56of the roster. This is this is this is quite a
- 24:00bit. But you know, with Oklahoma
- 24:02State, it's been a slow bleed because they fired Gundy before
- 24:05the conference, you know, even started play with Campbell.
- 24:09You know, it's just they built such a great culture there with
- 24:12him as the head coach. And you know, nothing against
- 24:15Jimmy Rogers. I'm sure it's not really about
- 24:17him at this point. It's about the fact that they
- 24:19know they can go into the portal and they know that they can
- 24:22probably make more money than other school.
- 24:24Maybe some of them want to follow Campbell at Penn State.
- 24:26The portal opens on Friday. So we'll get a better sense of
- 24:29where everybody wants at that point.
- 24:31But it's, it's, it's pretty crazy to see that many players
- 24:35from two programs in the portal that they are heading for the
- 24:37portal at the same time. And I think that's one thing we
- 24:39got to clear up. You know, the portal opens on
- 24:41Friday. Everything that everybody's done
- 24:43at this point is like, I'm going in the portal on Friday, it
- 24:46opens. That's when the free for all
- 24:48begins. It's going to be like an
- 24:49Oklahoma land rush this year because a, you have teams in the
- 24:53playoff who have proven that you can use the portal to flip your
- 24:55program in the year and make it to the, you know, quarterfinals
- 24:58of the, of the playoff. And plus there's, there's clear
- 25:02evidence that the cap is not working.
- 25:04You know, there, I mean, there may be a cap on revenue sharing,
- 25:06but there's not a cap in the amount of money that teams are
- 25:08going to spend to get their rosters where they think they
- 25:11need to need them to be. We Fast forward to Thursday and
- 25:15the lid lifter on the January 1st games.
- 25:18Oregon, Texas Tech, Texas Tech Big 12 champion has gone very
- 25:23well for the Big 12, though in this new era of the playoff.
- 25:25What just one victory it was TCU over Michigan, The only time the
- 25:28Big 12 has got one for the conference as a whole.
- 25:32Can we overstate the importance of this game for just the way
- 25:36people look at this conference? Look at it in comparison, not
- 25:39even to the SEC and the Big 10 and what they do monetize, but
- 25:42just on the football field because it does feel like this
- 25:45Texas Tech team, they're built like the upper echelon squads.
- 25:49Yeah, yeah, Go back to something Bill Fennelly said it media day
- 25:52in October. I was asking him about the fact
- 25:54that, you know, there were 20 women's basketball games on
- 25:56national TV this year, and that was the most that the conference
- 25:59has had seven years. And that's a that's a good
- 26:01thing. He agreed that was a good thing.
- 26:03And I said, well, how do you get more of that because you've got
- 26:05so many more men's games on national TV than women's games.
- 26:08And he said we've got to win. We've got to win tournament
- 26:11games, we've got to win championships.
- 26:13We've got to do those kinds of things in order to get our, you
- 26:16know, to get our status up, so to speak.
- 26:19You know, the Big 12 football kind of needs to do the same
- 26:22thing. You know, you mentioned TCU is
- 26:23the only school in the conference, so there's a lot of
- 26:25playoff game. Part of the reason the SEC is so
- 26:28well respected is because in these situations, time and
- 26:32again, they have won more often than not.
- 26:35You know, you turn 2 games on New Year's Day that feature SEC
- 26:39teams. Those will invariably be higher
- 26:43rated games from a viewership standpoint and Tech and and
- 26:46that's unfortunate, but it's also a a part of that, you know,
- 26:50narrative of the Big 12 was a good conference, but it's not a
- 26:53great conference because it doesn't win a lot of playoff
- 26:56games. Tech winning a playoff game or
- 26:58two this time around can help. It doesn't solve the problem,
- 27:02but it can help because what's going to help the Big 12 is save
- 27:06Tech winning a couple of games, maybe getting to the national
- 27:09championship game and then the conference as a whole building
- 27:12on that next year and getting multiple teams in the playoff.
- 27:15This is what your mark talked about at media day in July,
- 27:18getting multiple teams in the playoffs because it gives you
- 27:21more opportunities to win a national championship.
- 27:23It enhances your national reputation.
- 27:26It's not it's not like the SEC got here overnight.
- 27:29They've been getting to this point for 25 years because
- 27:31they've been so successful in this spot.
- 27:33For the Big 12 to get, you have to make up that ground.
- 27:37I feel like they've got to start winning more of these games.
- 27:40And it does start with Texas Tech because they're the only
- 27:42Big 12 team in the playoffs. And they're probably, you know,
- 27:46maybe aside from that Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma team, that
- 27:49might be the best Big 12 team that's ever been in the
- 27:51playoffs. Fairpoint Matt Poston's
- 27:53Heartland College Sports So what's it going to take for
- 27:55Texas Tech to to win on Thursday?
- 27:58How do you see the? Game well when you get to games
- 28:01like this, and I feel like the Oregon Texas Tech games pretty
- 28:05evenly matched. It's really just about one doing
- 28:08what you do well. And for Tech, that is playing
- 28:11incredibly good defense, getting to the quarterback, getting the
- 28:14opponent off the field on 3rd down and then, you know, just
- 28:17letting your offense go to work. It's about limiting turnovers.
- 28:21It's about creating turnovers. All those little things we
- 28:24talked about that kind of add up over the course of the season,
- 28:26they get magnified in a game like this.
- 28:29So for me, if I'm Joey McGuire and I'm thinking about this game
- 28:32on on Thursday, it's all about just do what we do well, create
- 28:36a couple of turnovers, flip the fields on them and just, you
- 28:40know, limit our mistakes. You know, that's that's one
- 28:44thing that tech has been really, really good at that they haven't
- 28:46always been good at it limiting their own mistakes, whether it
- 28:49be turnovers, whether it be drives stuttering on on 3rd down
- 28:53and things like that. They've done a really good job
- 28:55of limiting that this year. They're going to have to do
- 28:57those same things on Thursday. But it's not, you know,
- 29:01cataclysmic change in terms of what they're trying to do on the
- 29:04field. You're just trying to do it
- 29:05better, more efficiently and make those one or two plays that
- 29:09that put the other team on their heels, you know, flip the field,
- 29:12create a turnover and and put yourself in control of the game.
- 29:17Basketball time, finally. Yes, yeah.
- 29:20It is here conference play and you know, we see many
- 29:24conferences that have sprinkled in a couple during December.
- 29:28Even those feel a little bit weird.
- 29:29But here we go. This race to the 18 game
- 29:31schedule. Arizona the betting favorite,
- 29:34Iowa State, the second choice. It's just weird after what we
- 29:37see out see these first couple of seasons with Houston, who
- 29:40returned a lot of dudes to see them.
- 29:41The third betting choice. It hasn't gone well, even with
- 29:44just one loss on the resume for Houston.
- 29:46What's wrong with the? Cougars, I don't think there's
- 29:50really anything inherently wrong with them.
- 29:51I just think they're young and when you have a young team you
- 29:55don't. You can't really put a clock on
- 29:57how well they develop. Arizona really, by and large, is
- 30:01the young team. They've got two or three
- 30:02freshmen. They play on a pretty, pretty
- 30:05regular basis, starting with Coapit, but they just seem to
- 30:08have come together quickly and coalesce more quickly than some
- 30:11of the other teams that have young players on their team.
- 30:13Nationally. It's worked for BYU because
- 30:15really they only have the one freshman in Debonce and they've
- 30:18got a lot of veteran guys to mix around them.
- 30:21Houston has three really good veteran guys, but they're
- 30:23leaning on two or three, not just freshmen, but sophomores
- 30:27who didn't play a lot last year because they had so many
- 30:29veterans on their team. So I feel like Houston, yeah,
- 30:32maybe they're the number 3 betting team right now, but I
- 30:34really feel like they're a team that come February, come March,
- 30:39they're going to be right there. Kingston Flemings is a really
- 30:41good player and he's going to get even better as the course of
- 30:43the season goes on. But they've got two or three
- 30:45other guys in their team that by mid February, I think they're
- 30:48going to be in really good position.
- 30:49I don't think they're going to be as dominant as they had been
- 30:51the last two years, but I wouldn't put anything past
- 30:54Kelvin Sampson. That team, come late February,
- 30:56early March, I think they're going to be right there.
- 30:59Final minute with you here, Matt, you just show your
- 31:02thoughts on Iowa State. They're unbeaten.
- 31:03They're 13 and O Trent and I look at the schedule very
- 31:06favorable with the exception having to go to Lawrence and we
- 31:09I mean, that's a winnable basketball game.
- 31:11Not saying it won't happen, but we can make a we can find a path
- 31:14that this team gets to February unbeaten, which is crazy to
- 31:18think, but it's it's not without the realm of possibility.
- 31:20Your thoughts on the clones? Yeah, I like him.
- 31:23I mean, they're they're playing defense the way they always play
- 31:26defense. I think that Joshua Jefferson's
- 31:28gotten better as a player from year to year, which, you know,
- 31:31for a guy like him, you know, he's going to have to face off
- 31:34with guys like JT topping inside.
- 31:36The fact that he's gotten so much better over the course of
- 31:38the last year really bodes well for them.
- 31:40I think they're I think they're about as deep as they were last
- 31:44year. But I think right now, to me,
- 31:46mom still wish feels like The X Factor.
- 31:48He's shooting stillwell right now over the course of this,
- 31:52these first 13 games and he was kind of banged up last year.
- 31:55He really didn't give them what they were hoping for, especially
- 31:59from distance. He's in a much better place
- 32:01physically. I think he's playing much better
- 32:03now. I think that if they make a deep
- 32:05run in March, I think he's going to be a big reason why.
- 32:07But there's to me there's no reason why they can't not only
- 32:11win the conference, but win a national championship.
- 32:13In fact, I think I think there are five teams in this
- 32:16conference that have the ability to win a national championship
- 32:18right now, Arizona, Iowa State, Texas Tech, BYU and.
- 32:24Houston. Houston, Yeah, those five teams.
- 32:26I won't include Kansas yet because I'm with you.
- 32:28We don't know what's happening with Darren Peterson.
- 32:30If Darren Peterson plays, I got a chance.
- 32:32But right now, I can't include Kansas.
- 32:34I'm not sure he's going through fascinating stuff.
- 32:36Matt, happy new year. Thank you.
- 32:37What to do for Trent and I? We will impose on you a whole
- 32:40bunch here in the weeks ahead. Thank you, Matt.
- 32:42Hey, you bet I'll see you guys next week and I'm coming up for
- 32:45a couple games. Nice, I'm.
- 32:47Finally going to get to see some Hilton match finally in person.
- 32:50Well, that's great. You know, let's reach home.
- 32:52If you're where are you going to stay?
- 32:53You can stay in Ames, stay in Des Moines.
- 32:54I. Think I'm going to be in Des
- 32:56Moines? Well, good.
- 32:57And if it's one of our days, we're on the air.
- 32:58I'd love to see the whites of your eyes here in studio with
- 33:01us. Matt, I'll reach out.
- 33:02Thank you buddy. All right, man, Thanks.
- 33:04Yep. Good to talk to you, Matt
- 33:05Poston's Heartland College Sports.
- 33:07All right, our picks are next. I just came across something you
- 33:11might enjoy. OK, so here's there are 5
- 33:16quarterbacks, Trent, in the history of the NFL, in the
- 33:19history of the NFL, yes, that have back-to-back 13 win
- 33:23seasons. Peyton Manning, yes, Tom Brady,
- 33:26Aaron Rodgers, Brett Favre, absolutely.
- 33:29And. Jim McMahon.
- 33:33Sam Darnold, your guy in the same category with Rodgers,
- 33:40Manning, Brady and Farve. He also has the most turnovers
- 33:44in the NFL this year. Well.
- 33:45That's a different topic. Good luck.
- 33:47I know you got a lot of pending wagers in your accounts with the
- 33:50Seahawks behind him. Yeah, I will say good luck and I
- 33:53will not be joining you. Yeah.
- 33:54I don't think you will be. It's just so damn wide open.
- 33:58Our picks are next. We were both 2 and 3.
- 34:01Yes. The NFL is impossible this week.
- 34:05It feels that way, it really is. So does that lead you to have
- 34:07three college games on your? Side yes it does.
- 34:09You have 3 likewise. I got 3 in the NFL.
- 34:12Do you? I do.
- 34:13Implications with any of them? Are you both meaningless?
- 34:172/2 of the three have implications amongst them.
- 34:21That's next. Miller and Condon Circus Sports
- 34:24sponsors this. It's next on the Iowa Sports
- 34:27Radio Network. Off the bench, who knows
- 34:31football better? The war wages on.
- 34:34It's time for the afternoon pickup sponsored by Circus
- 34:38Sports on One O 6.3, KXNO and the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 34:44Hi, Miller Condon, welcome back. Final couple of minutes of our
- 34:47program. You and I are gasping for air
- 34:50with about a furlong to run. We're up by three, up 3.
- 34:54Lucas has caught me. I've LED since week 1.
- 34:57Half game leads now for Lucas. Over you, my God, it's a
- 35:01marathon, not a Sprint. I get it.
- 35:03But again, here they come in our rearview mirror.
- 35:06By the way, before we get into our picks, if you're a Hawkeye
- 35:09fan, you want to go see UCLA and Iowa 5:00 on Saturday.
- 35:13And if you can go, If you can go, I'll give you the tickets.
- 35:17Caller number one, you have to pick them up at the Carver box
- 35:21office. All right?
- 35:22You have to go and you have to have ID.
- 35:24I'm not going to send them in advance.
- 35:25You're going to have to go to Iowa City, get them
- 35:27515-284-5966. Please don't get them and then
- 35:30not show up. I don't want to waste these
- 35:32things. Fuller Dental 2 locations E 29th
- 35:35St. in Des Moines and of course, South 8th St.
- 35:39SE in Altoona. Trent.
- 35:40You have the T box Sir. Thank you very much and let's
- 35:43kick things off 2 college, 2 pro and a best bet.
- 35:46That's the way that we do things week after week.
- 35:49And this will conclude our season at the Super Bowl.
- 35:52Let's open things up and let's go to Friday.
- 35:54Yes, the day after January 1st. Navy, a team that I like
- 35:58certainly before the news and this Navy squad just in general,
- 36:02armed force teams excellent in bowl games.
- 36:04I think it continues here. Big number, get away the
- 36:06touchdown against Cincinnati in the Liberty Bowl.
- 36:09Navy with pick number one. Pick #2 we go to the Rose Bowl.
- 36:13Mentioned it earlier when we were talking to Bama.
- 36:15Bob, I think this more than anything, just watch the games.
- 36:19You watch the games. Indiana is a lot better than
- 36:22Alabama. Yes, in football, Indiana a lot
- 36:25better. And Bama, we'll lay a touchdown
- 36:26here, give you the Hoosiers with pick #2.
- 36:29We go to the NFL next. Kansas City, we saw an inspired
- 36:33effort, but they are so limited offensively, obviously with no
- 36:37Mahomes. I think it continues here.
- 36:39I think Vegas hangs around. I'm going to grab the five and a
- 36:41half and take the Raiders against Kansas City in Vegas
- 36:45with pick #3, pick #4. Maybe it's just years of scar
- 36:50tissue that is creeping in. Taking the Lions plus the three
- 36:54in Chicago. Yes, it's golf and cold weather.
- 36:56Prove it to me by. The way was he awful against
- 37:00Minnesota or what? Ugly.
- 37:02Ugly performance. In that one, not a lot to play
- 37:05for. We know that doesn't matter in
- 37:07the NFL. I'm going to grab the Lions plus
- 37:09the three Rep things up with the NFC South affair.
- 37:13I'm grabbing the points here. Give me the Panthers plus the
- 37:15three. Tampa.
- 37:16It is a lost season. I think it ends on Saturday
- 37:18night. Panthers, I'll grab the field
- 37:20goal. I think they win it outright.
- 37:21My best bet of the week. All right.
- 37:23David Bellis has claimed the UCLA tickets, so he's going to
- 37:26go see the Hawks and UCLA, courtesy of fullerdental.net.
- 37:30All right, here we go. Trent.
- 37:31Let's get into it. I'm going to start with the NFL.
- 37:34Two meaningless football games, Cincinnati and Cleveland.
- 37:37I think Garrett's going to get the record, the sack record.
- 37:39I don't think they're going to win the football game.
- 37:40Cincinnati, there's a 7 out there.
- 37:42I'll lay the seven with Cincinnati.
- 37:45Pick #1 the Cowboys are on the road against the Giants.
- 37:49That number is now 3 1/2 at DraftKings.
- 37:53Cowboys laying 3 1/2. I will do so for my two NFL
- 37:57picks, Cincinnati and Dallas, then to go to the college game
- 38:01coming up tomorrow, Texas and Michigan.
- 38:03Texas now down to under a touchdown. 6 1/2 is the number
- 38:06there. With everything that's gone on
- 38:08at Michigan, are they ready to play a football game?
- 38:11I think not. Give me Texas -6 1/2, I like
- 38:14Miami, I'm going to take the 9 1/2 point.
- 38:16That's a lot of points. Ohio State has looked good but
- 38:19not great. I will take Miami in that
- 38:22football game and the 9 1/2. My best bet of the week is the
- 38:25Georgia Bulldogs laying only six against Ole Miss Give me
- 38:30Georgia, Miami, Texas and the NFL, Dallas and Cincinnati.
- 38:35What are you doing New Year's Eve?
- 38:37Get together with friends. That's what we do every year.
- 38:39Going to have the kids involved. They a lot of couples that have
- 38:42kids about the same age. So they'll run around, they'll
- 38:45do the thing. I I'm sure you got a big night.
- 38:47Huge. Party at our house?
- 38:48Yeah, you're all invited. I'll see 10. 30 You want me to
- 38:52give the address right now to everybody?
- 38:53No. I'm good.
- 38:54I'll see 11:00 probably. You're not even going to make it
- 38:57to. Midnight.
- 38:58I haven't, and I can't tell you. Last time I did.
- 39:00Well, I know one year you did when it was when Ohio State was
- 39:03playing and it went past midnight.
- 39:05Oh, is that right? Yes.
- 39:06Was that Ohio State? It was when the kid missed the
- 39:09field goal a couple years ago. The only reason I remember that
- 39:12is because my brother-in-law is an Ohio State grad and a huge
- 39:14Buckeye fan, and it hit midnight and he's still watching.
- 39:18And then the missed field goal and the Buckeyes lose.
- 39:22It's not a great way to ring in the new year for your squad.
- 39:24Is there a favorite that gets beat in the four in the four
- 39:28quarterfinals? Favorite that gets beat the most
- 39:32likely Tech Oregon. Yeah, I guess that would be the
- 39:35one that I point to, but that's kind of the easy one I think.
- 39:40I don't think so either outside of that.
- 39:43We'll see off THE bench coming up next.
- 39:46We'll talk to you on Friday. Happy new year.
- 39:48Be safe. Talk to you in 2026.
- 39:51Miller and Condon, noon to two.
