Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: How'd you feel about that game of pay that just
- 0:02Speaker 1: happened there? I didn't feel great about it. Yeah, courseweaty
- 0:05Speaker 1: right now.
- 0:05Speaker 2: We just played an intense game of pig, in tense
- 0:08Speaker 2: game of pig, and JJ Reddick was the first man out.
- 0:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I think what I think? What obsessed me is
- 0:14Speaker 3: number one the l for sure. Yeah.
- 0:16Speaker 4: But I texted Will yesterday and I said, Will, what
- 0:19Speaker 4: do I need to know? What am I walking into tomorrow?
- 0:23Speaker 4: And he laid out a show plan, some Duke stuff,
- 0:28Speaker 4: some NBA stuff. There was no mention of mini basketball pig.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:33Speaker 4: And had I known that, I would have I would
- 0:34Speaker 4: have came more prepared. I would have my whole day
- 0:38Speaker 4: would have been different. I'll put it that way. So
- 0:40Speaker 4: you're blaming me a little bit.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Well, here's and let me have Will side for a second.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Mid game.
- 0:44Speaker 4: Yeah, you guys probably got at least I don't.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Know, ten to fifteen warm up shots. Why why? What?
- 0:50Speaker 1: But but usually when people play Pig and someone comes
- 0:52Speaker 1: in middle of the game, they usually have to take
- 0:54Speaker 1: a letter.
- 0:55Speaker 3: And you didn't have to come in mid game. Well
- 0:58Speaker 3: that's because my driver took me to Well, I'm not.
- 1:01Speaker 4: Going to say you don't want to see the address,
- 1:02Speaker 4: but he took me to different a different address that
- 1:06Speaker 4: started with a seed, not a K.
- 1:08Speaker 3: And then on the way over here we got stuck
- 1:09Speaker 3: behind a train.
- 1:10Speaker 1: So just shit happens, man, A lot of adversity when
- 1:12Speaker 1: you're coming to and during the podcast on the bus.
- 1:15Speaker 3: But just to argue with you a little bit more.
- 1:19Speaker 1: When you and I were sitting in the corner of
- 1:21Speaker 1: there and we were like kind of first meet each other,
- 1:23Speaker 1: you did whisper to me, I play this game with
- 1:25Speaker 1: my kids exact hoop exact ball every single day.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Did you not say that? Was that? Is that a
- 1:29Speaker 3: comment you made? Exact hoop oh ball? You actually the
- 1:32Speaker 3: ball is bigger and harder to make it.
- 1:34Speaker 4: Yes, you know the there's like a men's basketball, women's basketball,
- 1:38Speaker 4: youth basketball, and then there's like the mini basketballs.
- 1:41Speaker 3: They're like three times the size that the ball you
- 1:44Speaker 3: guys used. That's what I'm used to.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Are you always aware when you walk into like a
- 1:47Speaker 2: situation like that, like they all expect me to win
- 1:50Speaker 2: this game, and when you do lose in that kind
- 1:52Speaker 2: of fashion, because it was pretty quick. Is it something
- 1:55Speaker 2: where you're just like, damn, these boys like really think
- 1:58Speaker 2: they got me for real.
- 2:00Speaker 4: I mean, if you guys really think you got me
- 2:02Speaker 4: in basketball, I actually feel bad for you.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Let them finish. Let them fish and finish. Nobody laugh.
- 2:09Speaker 4: No, but I'm just saying if we, if we, if
- 2:11Speaker 4: we all of a sudden like did a NERF football competition,
- 2:15Speaker 4: we probably win that like throwing it at a target,
- 2:17Speaker 4: like I would probably beat you, guys. I wouldn't say
- 2:19Speaker 4: to myself like I got you in football. I would
- 2:21Speaker 4: just say, like I won this specific random event.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Okay, it's pretty straightforward. It'd be better. It'd be better.
- 2:28Speaker 1: And easier for us to stay based on because there
- 2:30Speaker 1: was no like real basketball there.
- 2:32Speaker 3: We're just better shooters than you are.
- 2:35Speaker 4: Again, like at this particular dress outside of this particular bus,
- 2:40Speaker 4: I'm that particular hoop you guys got me today, and
- 2:42Speaker 4: I again, the competitive side of me is pissed off,
- 2:45Speaker 4: and I wish we could move on past this because
- 2:48Speaker 4: now I'm getting angry.
- 2:49Speaker 3: It's going to be it's gonna be a few minutes
- 2:51Speaker 3: before we leave. Trust me, we do not want to
- 2:53Speaker 3: see first take JJ reddick. Really yeah, have you not.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Seen the ways A couple of first takes I've seen
- 2:58Speaker 1: you lose your temper.
- 2:58Speaker 3: I don't think it's anything we can't hit. I don't
- 3:00Speaker 3: know if I've lost my temp Well, I've been animated.
- 3:05Speaker 2: You can tell because your vein will start coming out
- 3:07Speaker 2: of your neck a little bit, you start leaning a
- 3:08Speaker 2: little bit more in your seat and.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Does the seat lean is a big giveaway?
- 3:12Speaker 4: The producer said that to me the other day, really,
- 3:14Speaker 4: because I know when you're about to get really engaged
- 3:17Speaker 4: because I leaned forward.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Yeah, and I don't even realize I'm doing it. Yeah.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I think I've got to be better at I've exact.
- 3:23Speaker 1: This exact video is about Luca and Curry.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Uh. Now, this one was about Steven A calling Jimmy
- 3:30Speaker 3: Butler a permitter shooter. Yeah, and he's not a premier
- 3:33Speaker 3: perimeter shooter at all. Jimmy Butler's a fantastic player, He's
- 3:36Speaker 3: you know, superstar? Who als are? Who all are fantastic players? Well,
- 3:39Speaker 3: Pat Beverly, I'm just beverly pressed. On the other day,
- 3:44Speaker 3: you got a fantastic player? What does that mean? And
- 3:45Speaker 3: I'm like, I don't know, fifty fantastic players.
- 3:49Speaker 4: The hierarchy of the NBA is really hard to figure
- 3:50Speaker 4: out At any given time. But generally speaking, there's like
- 3:54Speaker 4: five guys that are it. They are him, and you
- 3:59Speaker 4: can win a championship with that player. And beyond that,
- 4:02Speaker 4: you know, there's probably five more guys that on certain
- 4:05Speaker 4: nights look like a top five player.
- 4:07Speaker 3: I's sort of like the top ten or fifteen.
- 4:10Speaker 4: Then it becomes very circumstantial for the next twenty to
- 4:13Speaker 4: forty guys, you know, and like Draymond he's a great
- 4:19Speaker 4: example of that, because where do you sort of place
- 4:21Speaker 4: him in the hierarchy of the NBA. If we're talking
- 4:23Speaker 4: about someone who can go off the dribble and score
- 4:26Speaker 4: on his own, like, that's not Draymond, but we're talking
- 4:29Speaker 4: about impact on winning. Well, shit, he's top fifteen, top twenty.
- 4:34Speaker 4: So it's it's hard to rank players. I hate doing it.
- 4:37Speaker 4: I hate you know, they make me do it? Make
- 4:40Speaker 4: you Have you seen Draymond Green try to play football?
- 4:43Speaker 3: I haven't. Oh, there's a video FAMI if you can
- 4:45Speaker 3: pull it up. Pull it up. Draymond Green spring football,
- 4:50Speaker 3: Michigan State.
- 4:51Speaker 4: What's like a good like for an average quarterback in
- 4:54Speaker 4: the NFL average actually, let's go not NFL average, FBS
- 5:00Speaker 4: college quarterback. How far can they throw football on the
- 5:05Speaker 4: flop yards eighty yards?
- 5:07Speaker 3: Like, what's good? Oh, so that's a you think like
- 5:10Speaker 3: you think sixty? Yeah, fifty to sixty would probably be
- 5:13Speaker 3: basically I could average D one quarterbacks.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Well, that's assuming that what you just said means you
- 5:18Speaker 1: can throw the ball fifty or sixty yards on the
- 5:19Speaker 1: run accurately.
- 5:21Speaker 3: On the run. I mean I could just do it standstill.
- 5:23Speaker 1: You can throw a fifty or sixty yards standstill? Yeah,
- 5:26Speaker 1: how long you feel somewhere to go? Because we can
- 5:29Speaker 1: go right to the field if you want. I mean,
- 5:31Speaker 1: I'm gonna you didn't give me warm up here? We
- 5:33Speaker 1: can go out to the field. Well, after we finish,
- 5:36Speaker 1: I have nothing to do the rest of to day.
- 5:37Speaker 1: We'll play pay again, just you and me, and you
- 5:39Speaker 1: can warm up as long as you want.
- 5:40Speaker 4: My ongoing joke is basically that if I had not
- 5:43Speaker 4: quit baseball, I would have been a big league pitcher.
- 5:46Speaker 3: You think so I had a heater? Man? Were you
- 5:48Speaker 3: a beast? I had a heat? I'll tell you six
- 5:50Speaker 3: or four? Yeah, we for it.
- 5:53Speaker 4: Well, I quit in seventh grade. That's the thing my
- 5:55Speaker 4: dad made me choose. But here's the thing I was
- 5:58Speaker 4: that is like the point where you have. I was
- 6:00Speaker 4: the beast then, and I hadn't hit my growth spurt yet.
- 6:03Speaker 4: I was five six and then all the kids that
- 6:06Speaker 4: I played against that were on the same level as me,
- 6:08Speaker 4: they all either played you know, double A, triple A baseball,
- 6:11Speaker 4: D one ACC baseball.
- 6:14Speaker 3: I feel like I could have had a I could
- 6:15Speaker 3: have had a chance. I mean, are you hitting like
- 6:17Speaker 3: low seventies as a seventh grader? Yeah?
- 6:19Speaker 1: Oh easy, I mean, that's that's just I feel that's
- 6:23Speaker 1: those seventies. Yeah, I feel like that's pretty to mid sixties.
- 6:25Speaker 1: You're like, holy shit, right, you know what I'm saying. Yeah,
- 6:29Speaker 1: like it's even sixty two.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Yeah. If you mound that clothes back to the dug out.
- 6:32Speaker 2: And you're in like middle school and you, hey, this
- 6:34Speaker 2: kid can throw seventy two miles an hour, You're like.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Fuck, I don't think I ever even heard of that.
- 6:37Speaker 4: Honest with you, your listeners know this, this is mores
- 6:40Speaker 4: us getting to know each other.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Where Where are you from again? From Arizona?
- 6:43Speaker 1: From area I grew up, grew up in Asa, born
- 6:45Speaker 1: in California, grew up, grew up in Arizona, went to Michigan,
- 6:47Speaker 1: and I've been here.
- 6:48Speaker 4: So okay, and then so Bontare, Missouri. Is that that's
- 6:53Speaker 4: a real place. Oh, I've been there. That's a real
- 6:55Speaker 4: Actually I've driven past there with Willie people.
- 6:58Speaker 3: It's a real place. Yeah, Baco lead okay. Cigarettes.
- 7:02Speaker 4: For a long time in my life, I'm out of conspiracy,
- 7:04Speaker 4: there's But for a long time in my life, I
- 7:06Speaker 4: was like, man, I'm not sure Missouri and Nebraska actually exists.
- 7:09Speaker 4: Like I don't know if they were real places or
- 7:11Speaker 4: if it was just like we're going to put them
- 7:13Speaker 4: on a map. Because I didn't know anybody. You know,
- 7:15Speaker 4: you never I'd never like Nebraska because they don't leave.
- 7:17Speaker 4: Nebraska people don't leave.
- 7:18Speaker 3: It's weird. I'm pretty sure Missouri people don't leave either.
- 7:21Speaker 3: You're talking about where I am right now.
- 7:22Speaker 1: No, but you like you like made it out kid, Yeah,
- 7:25Speaker 1: I mean you told me all the time people from
- 7:27Speaker 1: your town like don't really leave that town.
- 7:29Speaker 3: That's fair. Yeah, that's accurate.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Like Nebraska, it's a similar it's a similar conversation we've had.
- 7:35Speaker 2: I feel like most people if you're in a small town, though,
- 7:37Speaker 2: not a lot of people really leave.
- 7:40Speaker 3: I think that's a great point, you know what I mean.
- 7:42Speaker 2: No, and I agree with that, Like cities like you like, yeah,
- 7:46Speaker 2: I don't know what makes We were an hour away
- 7:49Speaker 2: from Saint Louis when I was growing up, so there
- 7:50Speaker 2: really wasn't no city there.
- 7:52Speaker 3: There was like nothing around us.
- 7:53Speaker 2: So you just get used to the community aspect, I
- 7:56Speaker 2: guess of a small town, like when you're growing up
- 7:59Speaker 2: and when you're younger like my area, and say, you're
- 8:01Speaker 2: like good at sports, you like picture yourself being like
- 8:03Speaker 2: a head coach of that high school team when you
- 8:05Speaker 2: grow up, or like a gym teacher, you know.
- 8:07Speaker 3: What I mean.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm always coach pe and I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 8:11Speaker 2: teach pe and I'm gonna coach football.
- 8:12Speaker 3: What was a big city for you? Saint Louis. Saint
- 8:14Speaker 3: Louis Lewis is huge.
- 8:15Speaker 2: When I went to Link in Nebraska, I felt like
- 8:17Speaker 2: it was big for me and everybody else from like
- 8:20Speaker 2: Texas and Cali, and they like just shit on it.
- 8:22Speaker 4: Like like when I went to Orlando my rookie year,
- 8:24Speaker 4: I thought I thought Orlando was a city.
- 8:26Speaker 3: It's clearly not a city. It's not a real city. Well,
- 8:29Speaker 3: Atlanta's a weird place place.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Every time I go to Orlando, I'm like, I feel
- 8:32Speaker 1: like everything's fake here because it's like the Disney the
- 8:34Speaker 1: Disney World, and it's like, oh, there's a castle right there,
- 8:37Speaker 1: or like this extravagant billboard, like it's so insane. But
- 8:40Speaker 1: really it's just like fake. Nothing's real there. It seems
- 8:44Speaker 1: like to me, I've.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Only been there like three times in all three of
- 8:46Speaker 3: those years. I don't know.
- 8:47Speaker 4: I wouldn't call it like all of it fake, but
- 8:51Speaker 4: it's a transient place. So a lot of people in
- 8:53Speaker 4: and out, a lot of tourists.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Google transient for me. Well, he's I mean, he can
- 8:58Speaker 3: probably define it for you'll be.
- 9:00Speaker 4: That'll be the easiest word to translate that I'll use today.
- 9:04Speaker 3: Oh wow, yeah, what is it? Short lived? Okay?
- 9:09Speaker 4: I keep always changes moves around, you know, people in
- 9:12Speaker 4: and out. Yeah, nobody's from Like, who's from Orlando? Who's
- 9:15Speaker 4: like I like, Yeah, I grew up in Orlando, and
- 9:16Speaker 4: I stayed in Orlando. It's the same thing here in Nashville.
- 9:20Speaker 1: The first six months I lived in Nashville in twenty fourteen,
- 9:23Speaker 1: I didn't meet one person from Nashville.
- 9:25Speaker 3: I grew up in this area at all. Everyone's transplants.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Yeah, come from New York, come from Florida, come from
- 9:30Speaker 4: all over the place.
- 9:31Speaker 2: What you're you know, you're touching the local boys back there?
- 9:34Speaker 3: Well, I mean, is that not true?
- 9:35Speaker 1: Is there's so many people from out of town. Yeah,
- 9:38Speaker 1: I'm not trying to come out the boys. I'm just
- 9:39Speaker 1: trying to say, like it's a transient place.
- 9:42Speaker 3: The book. You know, read a book, boys, and it's
- 9:45Speaker 3: just a transient place. You know, are you stick to
- 9:49Speaker 3: be un bust on the boys?
- 9:51Speaker 4: I am stoked. I mean shit, man, Like I gotta
- 9:53Speaker 4: be honest with you all. The last eight or nine
- 9:57Speaker 4: months has been kind of crazy for me because I
- 10:00Speaker 4: always envisioned this year of bliss and quiet when I retired,
- 10:05Speaker 4: and I was very hesitant to do ESPN, and uh,
- 10:10Speaker 4: I agree to do like a short one year deal
- 10:12Speaker 4: and I was still obligated to do the podcast.
- 10:15Speaker 3: For another year. So I was like, yeah, I'll fuck it,
- 10:17Speaker 3: I'll do I'll do ESPN.
- 10:18Speaker 4: But getting into the media space has been way busier
- 10:22Speaker 4: than I expected, and so I get asked to do
- 10:24Speaker 4: podcasts probably three or four times a week. That's our exaggeration,
- 10:28Speaker 4: like literally three or four times a week. So for me,
- 10:31Speaker 4: when I got like the ask from your crew that
- 10:35Speaker 4: was like, hey, did he come down to Nashville to
- 10:37Speaker 4: do this? I was like absolutely, absolutely, no hesitation. I'm
- 10:41Speaker 4: super excited to be here.
- 10:43Speaker 1: What about bust One the boys is if there's three
- 10:45Speaker 1: or four a week coming to you saying hey, come
- 10:47Speaker 1: on our podcast? What about busting?
- 10:48Speaker 3: Was like, so was it? The bus was a will?
- 10:51Speaker 4: It was mostly well, yeahs usually great follow up follow
- 10:55Speaker 4: on Twitter, a great phenomenal teeth. Yes, he's hilarious. He
- 10:59Speaker 4: had one of the need to body back somebody for JJ.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Somebody was coming at him really the guy named Chip
- 11:04Speaker 2: and then JJ JJ gave like a good response to me,
- 11:07Speaker 2: and it was one of those things where you kind
- 11:09Speaker 2: of like read through the bulls.
- 11:09Speaker 3: You'll like, hey, JJ, do you need do you need
- 11:11Speaker 3: me to ask him for a favor? Yeah.
- 11:13Speaker 4: I was so scared to clap back at people on
- 11:15Speaker 4: Twitter when I was a player, and then I was
- 11:17Speaker 4: off of social media for like two years.
- 11:18Speaker 3: It was it was an awesome time.
- 11:21Speaker 4: But then when when we started doing the podcast again,
- 11:23Speaker 4: I was like, I kind of gotta be on. But
- 11:25Speaker 4: in retirement, I have zero problem clapping back. And I
- 11:30Speaker 4: used to think about Kevin Durant I'd be like, why
- 11:31Speaker 4: is Kevin Durant? Why is Kevin Durant? Like clapping back, Well,
- 11:35Speaker 4: he's the top five player. The guy's worth hundreds of
- 11:37Speaker 4: millions of dollars, Like why does he find the time.
- 11:40Speaker 4: But the reality is when you have the app on
- 11:42Speaker 4: your phone and you check on it, it's human nature.
- 11:45Speaker 4: You're gonna look at the mentions and like why not.
- 11:47Speaker 4: It's very satisfying. Yeah, very satisfy.
- 11:50Speaker 3: And it's a super that.
- 11:51Speaker 4: Guy in a body bag the other day with the
- 11:54Speaker 4: you put him to put him in the Yeah, So like,
- 11:59Speaker 4: how's your swaddle game right now?
- 12:00Speaker 3: My swallow game?
- 12:01Speaker 2: Well, now we're kind of, you know, we kind of
- 12:04Speaker 2: we're kind of cheating now because we got the Ali
- 12:06Speaker 2: swaddle because it's like voo that exists, Yes, that exists,
- 12:09Speaker 2: and it is a good it's a very good swaddle.
- 12:11Speaker 2: But before we got the Ali, my swaddle was was
- 12:13Speaker 2: actually getting pretty good.
- 12:14Speaker 3: I was like in mid season four before we got
- 12:16Speaker 3: the Ally, that's good.
- 12:17Speaker 4: Yeah, my wife only let me do the swaddle. She
- 12:19Speaker 4: couldn't do it really for both our kids. Yeah, I
- 12:22Speaker 4: was and I went tight.
- 12:23Speaker 3: I went tight.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Well, that hands has poken out when when you first start,
- 12:28Speaker 1: then that hands starts creeping, they start scratching their face,
- 12:31Speaker 1: the nails, there's nothing, it's it's it's a wild thing.
- 12:33Speaker 1: The swallow was something that took very seriously get competitive.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Yes, Like when they're kind of tugging, You're like, all right,
- 12:39Speaker 2: I'll fucking show you you.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Wanna we want to play games like that, you know
- 12:42Speaker 3: what I mean? From there, and I didn't really fight
- 12:45Speaker 3: back too much.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Makes you feel kind of bad after, but while you're
- 12:47Speaker 1: in it, you definitely like think, oh, this baby's trying me.
- 12:50Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying. I absolutely get it.
- 12:53Speaker 2: But yeah, I was telling Taylor like, uh oh, stoked
- 12:56Speaker 2: that you were coming on because every every white kid
- 12:58Speaker 2: in America when you're playing college basketball, they want to
- 13:00Speaker 2: be able to shoot a ball like JJ Reddick. And
- 13:02Speaker 2: I was more fired up now that you're coming on
- 13:05Speaker 2: the bus because I was telling Taylor that you're legitimately
- 13:07Speaker 2: one of the first ogs like in the in the
- 13:11Speaker 2: active athlete world that was doing a podcast like you
- 13:14Speaker 2: did yours for like five years. Now you did it
- 13:16Speaker 2: with like Yahoo and Ringer before you had to do
- 13:18Speaker 2: your own thing. But just the fact that you're podcasting
- 13:21Speaker 2: in those five years, like when we started Busting with
- 13:23Speaker 2: the boys, like low key to give your flowers a
- 13:26Speaker 2: little bit, like you helped give me like confidence and
- 13:28Speaker 2: like courage you like do Busting with the boys kind
- 13:30Speaker 2: of like a Pat McAfee and some of those guys
- 13:32Speaker 2: who have kind.
- 13:32Speaker 3: Of like pioneered the space.
- 13:34Speaker 2: And so that's like, that's actually like a that's a
- 13:36Speaker 2: huge reason like why I was fired up because I
- 13:38Speaker 2: would look at old man in the three, and you're
- 13:40Speaker 2: obviously in the in the basketball space.
- 13:43Speaker 3: So I never really like there's some out there.
- 13:45Speaker 2: You look and you're like all their kind of like
- 13:46Speaker 2: competition and stuff, but you like you were since you
- 13:48Speaker 2: were in the.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Basketball side of it.
- 13:49Speaker 2: I was like, oh, let me see like what JJ's doing,
- 13:51Speaker 2: like how he does his stuff. You've retired on your
- 13:53Speaker 2: own platform, like you own you like own your voice,
- 13:56Speaker 2: you control your narrative. You give a platform for athletes,
- 13:58Speaker 2: and so that's like why I'm so fired up that
- 14:01Speaker 2: you're on the bus.
- 14:02Speaker 3: I appreciate that. I never thought about that.
- 14:05Speaker 4: When I first started, WOJ was launching a platform called
- 14:10Speaker 4: the Vertical at Yahoo, and he asked me to write
- 14:12Speaker 4: articles for him, and I got this like weird flashback
- 14:15Speaker 4: to college, being like stressed out and then having to
- 14:18Speaker 4: stay up all night till six am to write a
- 14:20Speaker 4: term paper. I was like, fuck that, waj, I don't
- 14:22Speaker 4: want to do that. And then he came back six
- 14:23Speaker 4: months later it's like me and Chris Mannix are doing
- 14:25Speaker 4: the pod Do you want your own pod? And I
- 14:28Speaker 4: legitimately had never listened to a podcast before. My wife
- 14:30Speaker 4: had listened to Cereal the season one about the love
- 14:34Speaker 4: triangle and the murder and stuff. Oh, I never I
- 14:36Speaker 4: was like, I listened to it and I was like,
- 14:37Speaker 4: I don't know what to do, Like, this is not
- 14:39Speaker 4: what I'm going for. And you know, when I started it,
- 14:42Speaker 4: it was I thought at the time it was weird.
- 14:44Speaker 4: I thought at the time, I was like, I'll just
- 14:45Speaker 4: get some reps in case I want to do media.
- 14:48Speaker 4: But then I realized that it like satisfied this curiosity
- 14:52Speaker 4: in me, Like because I go to dinners or you know,
- 14:54Speaker 4: I meet people and I'm like, I'm genuinely.
- 14:57Speaker 3: Curious about people.
- 14:58Speaker 4: I'm very interested in the human psych and it's given
- 15:01Speaker 4: me this like amazing ability to to like interact with people.
- 15:06Speaker 4: And then on top of that, as you mentioned, there's
- 15:09Speaker 4: nothing better as an athlete than like having your own
- 15:11Speaker 4: platform and being able to control the narrative. And I've
- 15:14Speaker 4: used it in some ways, probably positively and probably probably
- 15:18Speaker 4: negatively to do that, but like I just I enjoy
- 15:21Speaker 4: having it. If there's anything that happens in my life,
- 15:23Speaker 4: you know, it's as a player, and even as a
- 15:26Speaker 4: retired player, I can just go on the pod and
- 15:27Speaker 4: talk about it.
- 15:28Speaker 1: When you were first starting your podcast, was there like
- 15:30Speaker 1: that then in security that like, oh man, once I
- 15:33Speaker 1: put the start putting this out there while I'm playing,
- 15:34Speaker 1: am I going to be like, oh yeah, judge did
- 15:37Speaker 1: My coach is going to think this way? My team
- 15:38Speaker 1: is going to think a certain way, Like how does
- 15:40Speaker 1: you deal with that situation?
- 15:42Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 15:43Speaker 4: I was fortunate because the clip the Clippers at the
- 15:45Speaker 4: time that I get asked that question a lot. The
- 15:50Speaker 4: truthful answer is anyone who is around me as a
- 15:52Speaker 4: professional knew that my number one priority was basketball, even
- 15:56Speaker 4: more so than my family. And I hate admitting that,
- 15:58Speaker 4: but that's the truth. My entire day was structured around
- 16:01Speaker 4: trying to be great at basketball. So no one that
- 16:05Speaker 4: I worked with, whatever question whether or not I was
- 16:07Speaker 4: making the podcast a bigger priority than basketball, I think
- 16:12Speaker 4: for me, and it's still this way. I still get
- 16:14Speaker 4: a little bit of performance performance anxiety when I record
- 16:19Speaker 4: a pod, because like, I just want anything I do,
- 16:22Speaker 4: I want it to be good. This is why I'm
- 16:24Speaker 4: so mad that I lost to you guys in many basketball. No,
- 16:27Speaker 4: I'm serious, like, I just want it to be good.
- 16:29Speaker 4: And so it took twenty to thirty episodes where I like,
- 16:35Speaker 4: legit wouldn't have to chug a beer before I started,
- 16:37Speaker 4: just to calm myself down.
- 16:39Speaker 3: Really, I would chug.
- 16:40Speaker 4: I would chug it was I was living at La
- 16:42Speaker 4: so it's the North Coast Pilsner. I would chug a
- 16:44Speaker 4: North Coast Pilsner, and and just to calm myself down,
- 16:48Speaker 4: like okay, all right, you're gonna be all right. And
- 16:50Speaker 4: I used to fucking keep I mean age like fifteen
- 16:53Speaker 4: to twenty pages of notes on each person, and I
- 16:57Speaker 4: would like have every question I've had a flow chart.
- 16:59Speaker 3: I mean I overdid it.
- 17:01Speaker 4: And now it's like I record and not do my notes,
- 17:03Speaker 4: and I research and I work hard on it. But
- 17:05Speaker 4: generally speaking, now it's just like it's natural, it's flows.
- 17:08Speaker 4: I'm sure you guys have experienced the same thing. One
- 17:10Speaker 4: hundred some episodes in it gets easier.
- 17:13Speaker 1: It's way easier because you can't understand, like the more
- 17:16Speaker 1: you do episodes like it took us about twenty episodes.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Every once in a while too, like we'll do an
- 17:20Speaker 1: episode somebody, we'll call each other in the car. But
- 17:22Speaker 1: that was like our go to in the beginning was
- 17:24Speaker 1: do an episode driving away college other like, hey, what
- 17:26Speaker 1: do you think? And then we go back and forth
- 17:28Speaker 1: on what we thought we both could have done better,
- 17:31Speaker 1: or like hey, if I do this, maybe you say that,
- 17:33Speaker 1: or like go off it this way.
- 17:34Speaker 3: And it was.
- 17:37Speaker 1: A difficult, trying time because you're just kind of in
- 17:40Speaker 1: this world that you know nothing about, and then you
- 17:42Speaker 1: don't know if people are really gonna enjoy it. And
- 17:44Speaker 1: then as you do it more, it kind of just
- 17:47Speaker 1: becomes like, you know what your audience likes and wants,
- 17:49Speaker 1: you know, like it much. It's probably easier for me
- 17:52Speaker 1: and Will because we're best friends, so it's easy for
- 17:55Speaker 1: us to come up here, and because what we do
- 17:57Speaker 1: in the podcast we literally do outside, right, So if
- 18:00Speaker 1: it's just us too, it's never a difficult thing. Having
- 18:02Speaker 1: a guest on is not a difficult thing for us
- 18:05Speaker 1: because at the end of the day, we can bounce
- 18:06Speaker 1: back off each other, you know, and we wait.
- 18:08Speaker 3: But it took us time in reps to learn that.
- 18:11Speaker 4: Yeah, I think with Tommy, I think that was part
- 18:13Speaker 4: of the reason that I wanted Tommy as a co host,
- 18:16Speaker 4: which our last season of The Ringer, he was trying
- 18:19Speaker 4: to get me to do it, and I was like,
- 18:20Speaker 4: I could. I'll be honestly, I don't really want to
- 18:22Speaker 4: do it anymore. So we did it for a few
- 18:23Speaker 4: months together, and then COVID hit Pandemic, hit World shutdown.
- 18:29Speaker 4: We have both simultaneously discovered Zoom and we're like, oh,
- 18:32Speaker 4: we don't have to do these in person. We can
- 18:34Speaker 4: do them, you know, over the internet and put some
- 18:37Speaker 4: content out during COVID and then we you know, Bill
- 18:40Speaker 4: wouldn't let us own the podcast, so we were like,
- 18:42Speaker 4: all right, we're gonna leave. But I think having like
- 18:45Speaker 4: that was my motivation for involving Tommy and just having
- 18:49Speaker 4: somebody like as a backup bounce ideas off to give
- 18:52Speaker 4: me a pause during it.
- 18:54Speaker 3: It's helpful.
- 18:55Speaker 4: It's helpful, by the way, even this year working for
- 19:01Speaker 4: ESPN and kind of having a real sense of the
- 19:05Speaker 4: landscape of sports media, like being in it and getting
- 19:09Speaker 4: to understand it a little bit better. Like we are
- 19:13Speaker 4: in the first wave of athlete driven content, the first wave,
- 19:17Speaker 4: and like you mentioned you like I was a pioneer.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Like I think all of us are.
- 19:21Speaker 4: I think all of us in this first inning, first
- 19:24Speaker 4: couple innings, are pioneers in it. I don't think this
- 19:27Speaker 4: is like a novelty something that's going to be a
- 19:29Speaker 4: short lived thing. I think the future of sports media
- 19:32Speaker 4: is going to be athlete driven. Not to say that
- 19:34Speaker 4: traditional journalists won't have their place in it, but honestly,
- 19:38Speaker 4: people are starved for this, Like we have been fed
- 19:42Speaker 4: sandy and soda for the last fifteen or twenty years.
- 19:46Speaker 4: And being able to peel back the curtain a little
- 19:49Speaker 4: bit and offer someone a three course meal with a
- 19:51Speaker 4: leafy green salad.
- 19:53Speaker 3: I think people eat it up. Man, I really don't.
- 19:55Speaker 3: I agree.
- 19:55Speaker 1: I think not just that, but like the suit and
- 19:58Speaker 1: tie like to be super proper all the time.
- 20:01Speaker 3: I think for us is we're kind of learning.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Like people want to feel like, oh, these guys are
- 20:06Speaker 1: just like me, that type of vibe, Like we might
- 20:08Speaker 1: play sports, but I mean we're sitting here in.
- 20:10Speaker 3: Shorts, T shirt, Barstool does one of the best parts
- 20:12Speaker 3: about hanging out Barstool, one of the best parts with You've.
- 20:16Speaker 2: Mentioned Bill not letting you own the podcast during that time.
- 20:21Speaker 3: You said that was during the COVID that was during
- 20:23Speaker 3: this was so our contract was running up.
- 20:28Speaker 4: I think it ended like July thirty first or August first,
- 20:30Speaker 4: so it's basically two weeks into the bubble. And I
- 20:34Speaker 4: told Bill in June, I was like, hey, you know,
- 20:36Speaker 4: just so you know, like we are like going to
- 20:39Speaker 4: other companies and being like, do you want to help
- 20:42Speaker 4: us sell ads on our podcast? I'm you know, I
- 20:45Speaker 4: want to be transparent with you that this is happening,
- 20:48Speaker 4: so please make an offer. And you know, they made
- 20:51Speaker 4: an offer, but they were the only company that was like,
- 20:55Speaker 4: you can't own it. And this was right around the
- 20:57Speaker 4: time of the Ringer sale to Spotify and so and.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Not to mention Barstool with color Daddy, like there was
- 21:03Speaker 2: a lot of IP conversation.
- 21:05Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly, And so that was just it wasn't even
- 21:09Speaker 4: it wasn't even a money issue because it honestly, honestly,
- 21:12Speaker 4: the Ringer offered us more guaranteed money than anyone else.
- 21:15Speaker 4: But it was just like I just wanted to own
- 21:17Speaker 4: the ip, even like simple stuff that you want to
- 21:21Speaker 4: do down the line with you know, conversations or episodes.
- 21:25Speaker 4: It's like, well if I don't have control of that,
- 21:28Speaker 4: like what good is it?
- 21:29Speaker 3: You know?
- 21:29Speaker 4: And so it really just became bottom line, like are
- 21:33Speaker 4: you gonna let me own it? And he said no,
- 21:34Speaker 4: And I said, okay, no hard feelings, that's fine, We're
- 21:36Speaker 4: moving on. No, what was it called before the JJ
- 21:40Speaker 4: Ready podcast? He wouldn't let yeah, yeah, And and they
- 21:46Speaker 4: so we lost.
- 21:47Speaker 1: I mean, it's the same thing that barstool with McAfee. Yeah,
- 21:50Speaker 1: is a Pat McAfee showing us Pat McAfee two point zero.
- 21:52Speaker 3: Correct for sure, But you just almost think like, man,
- 21:55Speaker 3: it's we lost.
- 21:55Speaker 4: Yeah, so we lost kind of crazy, right, We lost
- 21:58Speaker 4: our subscriber base obviously are gonna be the biggest thing, right.
- 22:03Speaker 4: And I had done it twice already because I lost
- 22:04Speaker 4: it when I left the Ringers O Yahoo, I love
- 22:07Speaker 4: I lost mine then, so I've had to restart three
- 22:10Speaker 4: times basically, which.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Well, what's huge, But I think speaks so good to
- 22:14Speaker 2: your audience. It was like very like intriguing when like
- 22:17Speaker 2: learning about you when we were doing busting with the boys.
- 22:19Speaker 3: Was that.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Yeah, you guys amassed one hundred thousand subscribers on YouTube
- 22:24Speaker 2: within six.
- 22:24Speaker 3: Weeks on on our old Man. Yeah.
- 22:29Speaker 4: I mean that's the thing that we realized early on.
- 22:33Speaker 4: It was like an epiphany moment we had. My last
- 22:37Speaker 4: year with the Ringer, we did Zion in person in
- 22:41Speaker 4: LA and it was his first long form interview. And
- 22:46Speaker 4: we did Jimmy right before the literally two weeks before
- 22:51Speaker 4: COVID and March eleventh and the you know, the world shutdown.
- 22:53Speaker 4: Basically we put that on YouTube and those are still
- 22:56Speaker 4: the two most watched videos on the Ringer YouTube channel.
- 23:00Speaker 3: So is this a fifty moment?
- 23:01Speaker 4: We're like, oh, not only is it audio, Like podcasts
- 23:04Speaker 4: should be audio, they should be video, and then we
- 23:06Speaker 4: should probably put stuff on social and so like all
- 23:09Speaker 4: of those things helped just grow the brand and grow
- 23:12Speaker 4: the audience. And you know, I talk with people all
- 23:16Speaker 4: the time that either want to do business with a
- 23:18Speaker 4: podcast or you know, our contract is up, and so
- 23:21Speaker 4: you know we're talking about potentially, you know, doing deals
- 23:24Speaker 4: with other people. But it's like, I don't care about
- 23:27Speaker 4: anything else. I just want to grow the audience. I
- 23:30Speaker 4: just want people to appreciate the content. When I have
- 23:34Speaker 4: a guest on, I want people to walk away and
- 23:35Speaker 4: be like, hey, I'm a fan of that guy now.
- 23:37Speaker 4: Like Pat Beverly is a great example of that, Like
- 23:40Speaker 4: he is a divisive player because of whatever however you
- 23:44Speaker 4: view his antics on the court. But the greatest compliment
- 23:48Speaker 4: I can get is like I have Pat Beverly on
- 23:50Speaker 4: the show, and people like I used to hate Pat Beverly,
- 23:53Speaker 4: I like him now.
- 23:54Speaker 3: That to me is like, that's it. That's the juice
- 23:56Speaker 3: for me. Yeah, pretty impressive. And you said yeah, and
- 24:03Speaker 3: I was like, oh, no, you on this. Yeah.
- 24:09Speaker 1: The juice for me is basically coming on YouTube mostly
- 24:12Speaker 1: and like seeing like subscribers, seeing people commenting and like
- 24:16Speaker 1: just loving what we're doing. It's it's still a crazy
- 24:18Speaker 1: thought process to me that we're sitting here on mics
- 24:22Speaker 1: on cameras and you when you play a sport your
- 24:24Speaker 1: whole life, and you think, oh, this is all really
- 24:26Speaker 1: ever be good at. This is my this is my
- 24:29Speaker 1: one crack at the the big whatever I'm supposed to
- 24:32Speaker 1: do in this world. And then you go branch off
- 24:35Speaker 1: and do something like this and it's like you don't
- 24:37Speaker 1: know if it's gonna work. Then all of a sudden,
- 24:38Speaker 1: like it's kind of blowing up in a way that
- 24:39Speaker 1: you're like, I can't believe people like this because it's
- 24:42Speaker 1: so natural and easy for us to do. So it's
- 24:46Speaker 1: just fun. I do love it when people come on
- 24:48Speaker 1: this this say hey, I thought I didn't like this guy,
- 24:50Speaker 1: but I do like this guy. But for me, it's
- 24:52Speaker 1: just like it's given me I feel safer in my
- 24:57Speaker 1: own life after doing a pod.
- 25:00Speaker 3: Yes, as far as like like.
- 25:01Speaker 1: We're doing a therapy session, yeah, but it is, Uh,
- 25:04Speaker 1: it's actually thing I think about all the time. There
- 25:05Speaker 1: used to be a point in my life where I
- 25:07Speaker 1: was like football, that's like the only main income I have. Like, yeah,
- 25:10Speaker 1: I've made a lot of money in football, but like
- 25:11Speaker 1: what if this and what if that? Like, am I
- 25:13Speaker 1: gonna ever be able to you know, I'm not gonna
- 25:15Speaker 1: have to go work a nine to five job or
- 25:17Speaker 1: something like that. And then once we started doing this
- 25:18Speaker 1: and I started really making money, I was like, oh,
- 25:21Speaker 1: like I'm gonna be okay no matter what, Like, no
- 25:24Speaker 1: matter what I do in my life, I'm gonna be fine.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Like this was like that step, that little piece for
- 25:28Speaker 1: me to be like Okay, I'm gonna be all right
- 25:30Speaker 1: and thing's gonna work out.
- 25:32Speaker 4: I knew going into my last year of my contract
- 25:35Speaker 4: with the Pelicans that it was gonna be my last year, and.
- 25:41Speaker 3: The other side of that was so terrifying. It was
- 25:44Speaker 3: so scary.
- 25:45Speaker 4: And I and I had had a podcast, but I
- 25:47Speaker 4: again it was like it was podcasting my future.
- 25:51Speaker 3: I didn't know, And.
- 25:53Speaker 1: It almost feels weird to say podcasting is my future.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Tstory're like, is that even a thing? But I, oh, yeah,
- 25:57Speaker 1: it's the thing.
- 25:58Speaker 3: I know. I know, but like, well, you were like yeah,
- 26:00Speaker 3: but if you first kind of started like is this
- 26:01Speaker 3: really a deal?
- 26:02Speaker 4: And like the last three four years, I called into
- 26:05Speaker 4: all my parents, Actually, my parents called me because they
- 26:08Speaker 4: were worried about me because New Year's morning, we had
- 26:11Speaker 4: played a road game in Oklahoma City.
- 26:13Speaker 3: I think the night before I got in late.
- 26:16Speaker 4: I went to bed at like three am, woke up
- 26:17Speaker 4: at eight, had a miscall for my mom. So I
- 26:20Speaker 4: called my mom back and she was like, you know,
- 26:21Speaker 4: we're really worried about you. My family was in Brooklyn
- 26:24Speaker 4: and I was living on my own in New Orleans,
- 26:27Speaker 4: and I was like super emotional because on Christmas morning,
- 26:30Speaker 4: we were in Miami and my my wife had sent
- 26:32Speaker 4: me a video of my now yeah, five year old
- 26:35Speaker 4: running down the stairs to the Christmas tree, and I
- 26:38Speaker 4: basically checked out at that moment, Like I was like,
- 26:40Speaker 4: I just want to be home. I don't want to
- 26:41Speaker 4: do this, and my mom, I told my mom, was like,
- 26:44Speaker 4: I just want to get in my car and drive
- 26:47Speaker 4: from New Orleans back to New York City. I just
- 26:49Speaker 4: want to be home. And she's like, why don't you?
- 26:53Speaker 4: And I said, because I'm fucking terrified, Mom, Like, I'm
- 26:56Speaker 4: so scared of what the rest of my life is. Like,
- 27:00Speaker 4: think about you guys play U sports. I'm guessing I
- 27:05Speaker 4: started at seven years old. I'm thirty seven now, I
- 27:08Speaker 4: retired at thirty seven. Thirty years of my life. I'm
- 27:12Speaker 4: not great at math, but I would guarantee that's probably
- 27:14Speaker 4: high eighty percent of my life. Eighty nine percent of
- 27:17Speaker 4: my life has been wrapped up in sports. My identity,
- 27:21Speaker 4: my ego, structure, everything is so ingrained in being a
- 27:25Speaker 4: basketball player and like letting go of that, letting go
- 27:28Speaker 4: of that thing, Fuck dude, it was terrifying. But I
- 27:32Speaker 4: can say to your point about like feeling safe about it, Like, no,
- 27:37Speaker 4: I can. I can do other things and maybe it's
- 27:40Speaker 4: maybe it's this for a while, maybe it's something else,
- 27:42Speaker 4: But I'm it's a weird place to be, you know,
- 27:45Speaker 4: basically a year out of retirement to be like, Okay,
- 27:48Speaker 4: I'm gonna be fine, my life's gonna be.
- 27:49Speaker 3: Okay, everything's gonna be all right.
- 27:51Speaker 2: It's gonna be all right, getting to that other side
- 27:53Speaker 2: of it, because you're right, like it's that example. We spent,
- 27:57Speaker 2: however many years of our life just doing one thing,
- 28:00Speaker 2: and I feel like like you're probably the same way.
- 28:01Speaker 2: Like even when you're in it, you have interests, and
- 28:04Speaker 2: every kind of player and athletes feels like they have
- 28:07Speaker 2: something they're kind of lining themselves up for. They have
- 28:09Speaker 2: a curiosity or I'm gonna do this afterwards, everybody feels confident.
- 28:12Speaker 2: But when those like for me, it was just like
- 28:14Speaker 2: three years ago, I thought that could potentially have been
- 28:16Speaker 2: my last year.
- 28:17Speaker 3: And you're just like I was getting into real estate.
- 28:19Speaker 2: I was, I was journaling up the podcast what it
- 28:22Speaker 2: could look like, but I was just terrified. I'm like, man,
- 28:24Speaker 2: I'm not playing a whole lot this year, Like this
- 28:26Speaker 2: could be it, Like I truly have to. I've always
- 28:28Speaker 2: been the guy that felt comfortable and be like, oh,
- 28:30Speaker 2: I'll figure something out, Like I already have a few
- 28:32Speaker 2: things going blah blah blah, but man, I really have
- 28:34Speaker 2: to figure out like what I enjoy because this could
- 28:37Speaker 2: be coming faster than what I realize.
- 28:39Speaker 3: And and for me with.
- 28:40Speaker 2: The podcast stuff, like it's it's like like when you
- 28:43Speaker 2: were saying it like scratches that curiosity that each that
- 28:45Speaker 2: you have, Like I love like talking to people. I
- 28:47Speaker 2: feel like if I get to learn something about somebody,
- 28:49Speaker 2: like we've had on like Darren Waller, Max, We've had
- 28:52Speaker 2: on a lot of incredible people, but a couple of
- 28:53Speaker 2: those stories staying now where Max is talking about his sobriety,
- 28:56Speaker 2: Darren Waller's talking about his sobriety and just going in
- 28:59Speaker 2: depth and like like giving athletes kind of a platform
- 29:03Speaker 2: to talk about stuff, and like you said, like I'll
- 29:05Speaker 2: you'll have people call and be like, yo, I didn't
- 29:07Speaker 2: fuck with that guy, but that's really cool, or it's
- 29:09Speaker 2: just like yo, I like this person, but man I
- 29:11Speaker 2: did not know he fucking went through that.
- 29:13Speaker 3: And it's like really cool that you guys are able
- 29:15Speaker 3: to like peel back layers.
- 29:16Speaker 2: Because they feel comfortable sitting in front of you, because
- 29:19Speaker 2: we're all athletes. Because a lot of stuff that you'll
- 29:21Speaker 2: give a microphone or the reporters or something you're either
- 29:24Speaker 2: in the locker room when you're you're your backup or
- 29:26Speaker 2: somebody that you're competing with sitting next to you, Like
- 29:28Speaker 2: guys are around there.
- 29:29Speaker 3: You're not gonna, yeah, everything's up.
- 29:31Speaker 2: You're not gonna you're not gonna actually give reporters and
- 29:34Speaker 2: talk about stuff.
- 29:34Speaker 3: Not because you won't give it to the reporter.
- 29:36Speaker 2: One you won't give it to a reporter, but also
- 29:37Speaker 2: like the environment you're in, you're just not your guards up,
- 29:40Speaker 2: like you said, egos are going and like when you're
- 29:42Speaker 2: on something like this, I just feel like everybody feels
- 29:45Speaker 2: more comfortable when they're talking with like athletes, or there's
- 29:48Speaker 2: more of like an unfiltered approach, like being for the boys.
- 29:50Speaker 2: We tell everybody if there's something that you don't like,
- 29:52Speaker 2: let us know. We'll take it off. Like we've talked
- 29:54Speaker 2: about jerk off stories that somebody's wanted theirs off.
- 29:57Speaker 3: We kept ours on. But so where it's like, yo,
- 29:59Speaker 3: just be your talk about that soon. Yeah, yeah, like yo,
- 30:02Speaker 3: just let it fly and be yourself. And if you're yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 30:05Speaker 3: and you're driving very much. You want to take it up,
- 30:07Speaker 3: We'll take it off.
- 30:08Speaker 1: People ask me all the time what this podcast is about.
- 30:09Speaker 1: I literally go, I think it's just like a bunch
- 30:11Speaker 1: of guys in the locker room talking. Yeah, it's like
- 30:13Speaker 1: the conversations you would have. But another thing to what
- 30:17Speaker 1: you were saying is, like we talk about all the time,
- 30:19Speaker 1: like how you have like these blinders on here. You
- 30:20Speaker 1: are so zoomed into the world that you live in,
- 30:23Speaker 1: and like not only let's say, besides the podcast, like football,
- 30:27Speaker 1: Like I go and play football, and then I spend
- 30:29Speaker 1: time in the off season watching free agency, and then
- 30:31Speaker 1: I spend time watching the combine. Then I watched the
- 30:34Speaker 1: draft and see you the guys I'm gonna go again soon,
- 30:36Speaker 1: what they're gonna be like, and then the like shortly
- 30:38Speaker 1: after that, the schedule comes out, and then you're in
- 30:40Speaker 1: OTAs and then you have that six weeks break where
- 30:42Speaker 1: you're just so focused and in like your fight camp,
- 30:45Speaker 1: going into camp.
- 30:45Speaker 3: It's a year round thing.
- 30:47Speaker 1: And what this has allowed us to do, or especially myself,
- 30:51Speaker 1: because I get super caught up in like thinking like
- 30:54Speaker 1: everyone is so focused and dialed in on Tennessee Titan
- 30:58Speaker 1: football when really, if I just like zoom out for
- 31:00Speaker 1: a second, it's like there's a there's a bunch of
- 31:03Speaker 1: people that are but for the most part, like, ain't
- 31:05Speaker 1: nobody gives a shit what I'm doing.
- 31:07Speaker 3: You know.
- 31:07Speaker 1: It's like I'll be in camp and it'll be the
- 31:10Speaker 1: middle of August and it's I'm right in the middle
- 31:13Speaker 1: of the start is too far to see and the
- 31:16Speaker 1: and the end's not close enough, and you're just kind
- 31:17Speaker 1: of like fucking in it. And you have a day
- 31:20Speaker 1: off and you go drive home and you say, you
- 31:22Speaker 1: know what, I'm gonna go cruise.
- 31:24Speaker 3: Down Broadway real quick and see what's going on.
- 31:25Speaker 1: And you go down Broadway and you see every type
- 31:28Speaker 1: of person walking up and down, drinking, having a good
- 31:31Speaker 1: time going.
- 31:32Speaker 3: They don't give two shits.
- 31:34Speaker 1: At the Tennessee Times had practice today, or we were
- 31:36Speaker 1: watching film or who We're gonna play, And it allows
- 31:39Speaker 1: you to be like, oh, like I'm gonna be It's
- 31:42Speaker 1: gonna be all right. It kind of comes down to
- 31:44Speaker 1: is like, oh, this isn't as overwhelming consuming to everybody
- 31:48Speaker 1: as you think it is.
- 31:50Speaker 4: I experienced that at Duke because I felt like I
- 31:53Speaker 4: feel like they all wanted it there. Like I was
- 31:56Speaker 4: in a fishball at Duke and I got on the
- 32:00Speaker 4: other side of it. I was like, oh, you know,
- 32:03Speaker 4: like Duke basketball, Like it's well known, but it's not
- 32:05Speaker 4: actually like that important. But at the time, it felt
- 32:08Speaker 4: like every single thing I did was live or die.
- 32:13Speaker 4: It felt very intense to me. I did to ask
- 32:16Speaker 4: you guys a question because I was my best friend
- 32:19Speaker 4: he works in television LA and I had lunch with
- 32:21Speaker 4: him yesterday and I was talking about the other side
- 32:24Speaker 4: of sports, you know, being retired and whatever, and he's like,
- 32:28Speaker 4: you know, you used to used to say this shit
- 32:30Speaker 4: all the time when when you were a player, Like
- 32:32Speaker 4: used to say you wanted to quit, used to say
- 32:34Speaker 4: you wanted to retire. And I'm like, I'm curious if you, guys,
- 32:36Speaker 4: in your career, even if it was a great season,
- 32:39Speaker 4: that moment you're talking about when you're driving down Broadway
- 32:41Speaker 4: and you're like, people are just having a normal good time.
- 32:45Speaker 4: Like there's so many things that I felt like I
- 32:46Speaker 4: miss missed out on, like Christmas being an example. I
- 32:49Speaker 4: think I think I played on Christmas Day twelve times
- 32:51Speaker 4: in fifteen years, and I carried I carried like a
- 32:56Speaker 4: little bit of resentment about that, Like I don't know
- 32:59Speaker 4: what it was, And there were moments where I was like,
- 33:02Speaker 4: you know, I could do something, why don't I do
- 33:04Speaker 4: something else? Like I started thinking about that actually was
- 33:07Speaker 4: right after I had my first kid, because I could
- 33:09Speaker 4: change my perspective about my time basically, and I, I
- 33:14Speaker 4: don't know, it's like I was. I was definitely still
- 33:16Speaker 4: into it, and I was definitely still committed, even more
- 33:19Speaker 4: so at the end of my career. I was a
- 33:20Speaker 4: fucking psycho, But like I still carried like a little
- 33:23Speaker 4: bit of resentment about all the things that went into
- 33:26Speaker 4: it that prevented me from doing other things.
- 33:28Speaker 3: Did you guys, Do you guys feel that at all?
- 33:31Speaker 2: If I feel like me feeling it, it was probably
- 33:34Speaker 2: if anything, in the last couple of years, like when
- 33:36Speaker 2: I know, I'm kind of like I have a foot
- 33:38Speaker 2: out the door, like I kind of know what I
- 33:40Speaker 2: want to lean into and do when I'm done now
- 33:41Speaker 2: with busting with the boys and everything else, and so
- 33:43Speaker 2: you think about it a lot more like when I'm
- 33:45Speaker 2: in the season. But I would say like the first
- 33:47Speaker 2: large the first like seven years, I more so think
- 33:51Speaker 2: like I can't wait to do this when football's over with, like.
- 33:53Speaker 3: Because it would be the same thing like with Thanksgiving.
- 33:55Speaker 2: You don't get to do any of the holidays like
- 33:57Speaker 2: during the season, like Thanksgiving, Halloween, Christmas, all these things.
- 34:01Speaker 2: New Years, it'd be more so like I can't wait
- 34:04Speaker 2: to do this, like when I get done.
- 34:05Speaker 4: Playing complaining not complaining. No, but it's because it's a
- 34:08Speaker 4: great life and I'm I was. I never felt any
- 34:12Speaker 4: sense of like ingratitude. I was always grateful. I was
- 34:16Speaker 4: always you know, I would still like even my fifteen
- 34:18Speaker 4: year super frustrated, like dude, I have fucking thirty six
- 34:21Speaker 4: and I'm in the NBA, Like how fucking cool is this?
- 34:23Speaker 3: Yeah, you know what I mean. Like I loved it
- 34:25Speaker 3: every day, but still there were there were moments. There
- 34:28Speaker 3: were moments.
- 34:29Speaker 1: Everyone goes through the grass is greener. And the thing
- 34:31Speaker 1: is there's so many different lives you can live on
- 34:33Speaker 1: this world. Yeah, and so everyone always daydreams to think
- 34:35Speaker 1: about what if. I always I remember being in college
- 34:38Speaker 1: and like having to get my weight up because I
- 34:41Speaker 1: came into college super underweight. I remember thinking to myself, like, man,
- 34:44Speaker 1: when I'm done playing football, I'm gonna be so like
- 34:46Speaker 1: jacked and skinny, and like I still to this day,
- 34:48Speaker 1: I'm like, man, I cannot I can't wait to fucking
- 34:50Speaker 1: lose sixty pounds, you know, and I can't wait to
- 34:53Speaker 1: do this and this, and there was I mean we
- 34:55Speaker 1: talked about it. We talked about all the time, Like
- 34:57Speaker 1: during the season last year, the season I was having
- 34:58Speaker 1: I had him over the houses like I'm I'm gonna retire.
- 35:00Speaker 1: I'm done, like and you kind of but that's when
- 35:03Speaker 1: you're like so in it, and then you start to realize, like, hey,
- 35:05Speaker 1: you're in the NFL.
- 35:06Speaker 3: How cool is this?
- 35:07Speaker 1: Regardless, Like it's just hope you're living every kid's dream
- 35:10Speaker 1: has to be a professional athlete at like it's some position.
- 35:14Speaker 1: We did it, we made graduations, made it, and it's
- 35:19Speaker 1: just cool. It's a cool vibe. But yeah, there are
- 35:21Speaker 1: there's always something that you want to do other than
- 35:24Speaker 1: what you're doing at that moment.
- 35:25Speaker 3: YEA, yeah, I think I've retired with the last three years.
- 35:28Speaker 1: Yeah, every year, this is it, this is known will.
- 35:32Speaker 1: Every single year he's been like this is the last one,
- 35:34Speaker 1: this is the last one. And now we're talking about
- 35:36Speaker 1: your ten. You know, it's just crazy. Do you think,
- 35:40Speaker 1: like I'm curious too, do you.
- 35:41Speaker 2: Think there's a difference in basketball and football like doing
- 35:45Speaker 2: the media stuff and having personalities? But I think because
- 35:47Speaker 2: I think it's like it's wild that Draymond has a podcast.
- 35:51Speaker 2: I think it's awesome, but I'm like, damn, like he's
- 35:54Speaker 2: got some stones. When you go do a podcast like
- 35:56Speaker 2: right after a game and talking about the game, do
- 35:58Speaker 2: you feel like there's a difference there because you obviously
- 36:00Speaker 2: did the pot for like five years, Like what's the sense? Like,
- 36:03Speaker 2: what's the sense like when you're around all the guys,
- 36:05Speaker 2: Because when I went to Vegas last year, like everybody
- 36:07Speaker 2: kind of knew about the podcast.
- 36:08Speaker 3: I know everybody liked this, so it was all good.
- 36:10Speaker 2: But when I was in the building and seeing guys
- 36:12Speaker 2: work and appreciating kind of like, damn, like these dudes
- 36:16Speaker 2: like fucking they love like I.
- 36:18Speaker 3: Love ball, but I'm like they love ball way more
- 36:20Speaker 3: than the spot that I'm at in my career right now.
- 36:22Speaker 2: To where you almost you almost feel bad bringing up
- 36:25Speaker 2: any of the stuff because you don't want to seem
- 36:26Speaker 2: like you're like not in it as much as they are.
- 36:29Speaker 3: Yeah, again, I go back to that point.
- 36:32Speaker 4: I don't I go back to like any teammate I've
- 36:35Speaker 4: ever been around, like saw the dedication and work I
- 36:38Speaker 4: put in, So I never sort of worried about that.
- 36:42Speaker 4: On the basketball football side, I mean, that's probably part
- 36:45Speaker 4: of a larger conversation just about the empowerment that NBA
- 36:51Speaker 4: players have right now, the player empowerment era that we're
- 36:53Speaker 4: in the middle of right.
- 36:55Speaker 3: Now, relative to the NFL.
- 36:57Speaker 4: And I don't think the NFL has gotten to the
- 36:59Speaker 4: level that the NBA has. And probably some of that
- 37:03Speaker 4: is are guaranteed contracts are the way the more you know,
- 37:09Speaker 4: again it's you get the right guys.
- 37:11Speaker 2: You can not predict, like it's a lot more competitive now,
- 37:13Speaker 2: but it's a lot easier to predict what Lebron.
- 37:15Speaker 3: And these boys on this team, like these teams are
- 37:16Speaker 3: going to see each other in the final.
- 37:17Speaker 4: There's also just inherently because of the way your cap works,
- 37:21Speaker 4: there's there's like more parody in the NFL and because
- 37:27Speaker 4: it's a two way sport like.
- 37:32Speaker 3: In the NBA.
- 37:33Speaker 4: It's like, if you're one of the five best players
- 37:35Speaker 4: or ten best players like.
- 37:36Speaker 3: You, you fucking run it. You run it.
- 37:38Speaker 4: Some guys don't take advantage of that. Some guys do
- 37:41Speaker 4: but there's just more. I just believe inherently there's more power.
- 37:45Speaker 4: If you are Lebron James, or you're a Kawhi Leonard
- 37:48Speaker 4: or Kevin Durant, there's you just carry more than even
- 37:53Speaker 4: a great All Pro NFL player does. It's just the
- 37:56Speaker 4: way the sport works.
- 37:57Speaker 1: Plus, guys probably when you say run at your I
- 38:00Speaker 1: mean like they run practice and meetings and they say,
- 38:02Speaker 1: we're fucking this is what we're doing.
- 38:03Speaker 3: There's input on everything. You haven't put on everything.
- 38:05Speaker 1: I don't know if you guys like Aaron Rodgers are
- 38:07Speaker 1: like Peyton Manning pay There's very few guys.
- 38:11Speaker 4: Kind of but I think every team in the all
- 38:12Speaker 4: thirty teams probably you could probably name five guys in
- 38:15Speaker 4: the NFL.
- 38:15Speaker 3: Ten guys.
- 38:16Speaker 4: Maybe they could name the best wide receiver in the
- 38:19Speaker 4: NFL and yeah, but then he's not he's not having
- 38:22Speaker 4: input on like who they should draft, right, they should trade? Yes,
- 38:26Speaker 4: where in the in the NBA, the top two guys
- 38:28Speaker 4: on pretty much every team. I mean I had that
- 38:31Speaker 4: with the Clippers, and I was like the fourth or
- 38:34Speaker 4: fifth guy you know I had. I would talk to Doc,
- 38:36Speaker 4: I would talk to l Frank, I would talk to
- 38:38Speaker 4: Steve Balmer, like I had that. You know, I had
- 38:40Speaker 4: that with Philly when I went there, Like I wasn't
- 38:43Speaker 4: even one of the best players, and I just I
- 38:45Speaker 4: just think that because of I don't know if it's
- 38:48Speaker 4: less guys or it's just like, you know, we're on
- 38:51Speaker 4: the court the whole time. You know, in the NFL
- 38:56Speaker 4: you're playing offense or you're playing defense. And to a
- 38:58Speaker 4: degree too, it's like the NBA, a great player can
- 39:01Speaker 4: impact the game more than a great NFL player because
- 39:06Speaker 4: I don't want to no, I agree make brodg gener rallies,
- 39:09Speaker 4: but in general, like in the NFL, like on a play,
- 39:11Speaker 4: you have a specific task.
- 39:13Speaker 3: In the NBA, it's it's.
- 39:14Speaker 4: A little more organic where a player's talent can sort
- 39:19Speaker 4: of shine in a bunch of different right, does that makes.
- 39:21Speaker 2: Sense that you guys make the mannings thereon Rodgers the
- 39:23Speaker 2: Tom Brady's like, if you play, if you play good offense,
- 39:27Speaker 2: like running the ball, and you can keep them off
- 39:28Speaker 2: the field, like you can keep those guys off the field,
- 39:30Speaker 2: like those quarterbacks need the defense. I mean the special
- 39:33Speaker 2: teams in literally everybody just as much as.
- 39:36Speaker 3: They feel like they can affect basketball.
- 39:37Speaker 1: It seems like, well it seems like not knowing basketball,
- 39:40Speaker 1: but like it seems like you have two or three
- 39:42Speaker 1: dudes you can take over and do whatever the fuck
- 39:44Speaker 1: you want.
- 39:44Speaker 3: Almost yeah, you know what I'm saying.
- 39:45Speaker 4: Pretty much like when Lebron as long as those dudes
- 39:49Speaker 4: were like good in twenty twenty two and not the
- 39:52Speaker 4: last time they were good was like twenty sixteen, Like
- 39:53Speaker 4: the Lakers this year, right, they built a team around
- 39:56Speaker 4: guys that were good six.
- 39:57Speaker 1: Years now as h is that?
- 39:59Speaker 3: Why then? Is that? Though? Yeah? Yeah, he still is.
- 40:04Speaker 3: I mean where would you rank him in the top
- 40:06Speaker 3: ten today? I mean he's in the top ten. I
- 40:09Speaker 3: don't know, he's to five. Though.
- 40:10Speaker 4: It's hard to judge based on this year just because
- 40:13Speaker 4: of how bad that team was and how badly that
- 40:16Speaker 4: roster was constructed. You know, I probably to a degree,
- 40:21Speaker 4: the Brooklyn Net's not as bad of a roster, but
- 40:24Speaker 4: also equally bad because it's the NBA has changed, and
- 40:29Speaker 4: it's very recent the NBA has changed.
- 40:31Speaker 3: Like I really believe.
- 40:32Speaker 4: You need homegrown talent like you have the draft. Well,
- 40:35Speaker 4: that's that's the inefficiency in the marketplace. You have to
- 40:38Speaker 4: draft well, you have to have homegrown talent, you can't
- 40:40Speaker 4: buy championships anymore because you need all the ancillary pieces.
- 40:45Speaker 4: You can go get two or three great players that
- 40:47Speaker 4: are super max or max players. You need really good
- 40:50Speaker 4: players three through seven, three through eight. And if you're
- 40:54Speaker 4: going to have two or three Max guys, those guys
- 40:56Speaker 4: have to be on rookie contracts or you have to
- 40:58Speaker 4: be really good with finding bart players and free agency.
- 41:01Speaker 1: But if you okay, So if you're the La Rams.
- 41:04Speaker 1: They went and they didn't do anything in the draft,
- 41:07Speaker 1: and there's fifty three guys on a roster in the NFL,
- 41:09Speaker 1: how come the you can't do that in the NBA anymore.
- 41:11Speaker 1: It seems like it'd be way easier to go pay
- 41:13Speaker 1: seven or eight guys and then and then have them
- 41:16Speaker 1: be a super team. You say, you think that can't
- 41:20Speaker 1: happen anymore once when the Rams just did that with
- 41:23Speaker 1: way more guys.
- 41:23Speaker 3: You know what I'm trying to say. Yeah, I don't
- 41:25Speaker 3: see what I'm saying.
- 41:25Speaker 4: I'm not again, I haven't put my GM hat on
- 41:28Speaker 4: to be an NFL GM. Yeah, I have put it
- 41:30Speaker 4: on to be an NBA GM. Right, it's just the
- 41:33Speaker 4: general way our our cap works. So there's a there's
- 41:36Speaker 4: a cap, and then there's a luxury tax, and there's
- 41:39Speaker 4: a there's a hard cap, an apron, there's a you know,
- 41:43Speaker 4: the difference between the luxury tax and the hard cap
- 41:45Speaker 4: is like an apron. So once you get into like
- 41:48Speaker 4: two max players, then it's like, all right, we have
- 41:51Speaker 4: thirteen roster spots we need to fill out with. Essentially,
- 41:54Speaker 4: the supermaxes are so high now, essentially like forty million dollars,
- 41:58Speaker 4: so on average, you're going to pay guys three million
- 42:00Speaker 4: dollars a year, which is what the Lakers did this year.
- 42:03Speaker 4: They signed you know, Avery Bradley, Trevor Reza, DeAndre Jordan,
- 42:09Speaker 4: like all these guys on minimum contracts. Well, if you're
- 42:13Speaker 4: a free agent and you're trying to get paid and
- 42:17Speaker 4: another team has let's say the mid level, which is
- 42:20Speaker 4: ten million dollars a year, you're probably gonna go take
- 42:23Speaker 4: that versus two point five, you know what I mean.
- 42:25Speaker 4: So it's just the nature of the salary cap. So
- 42:28Speaker 4: unless you have those guys that you drafted and they're
- 42:30Speaker 4: still on their rookie contract and you're able to pay
- 42:33Speaker 4: those players once they become free agents because you have
- 42:35Speaker 4: their bird rights.
- 42:36Speaker 3: But that's the challenge the right bird rights? Bird rights?
- 42:40Speaker 3: What's the bird rights? Bird rights?
- 42:41Speaker 4: Basically, if you're drafted by a team and then you're
- 42:44Speaker 4: you're a free agent, and that team is over the
- 42:47Speaker 4: the what the salary the what's the thard cap? Yeah,
- 42:52Speaker 4: salard cap. If you're over the star cap, you can
- 42:53Speaker 4: resign them. Came in with Larry Bird. So like if
- 42:56Speaker 4: when I signed with Philly on the one year deal,
- 43:00Speaker 4: they didn't have my bird rights the fallowing summer, So
- 43:02Speaker 4: when Lebron didn't sign there, they sign me on another
- 43:04Speaker 4: one year deal. Had I resigned there, they could have
- 43:06Speaker 4: gone over the luxury tax because after two years you
- 43:08Speaker 4: have early bird rights, after three you have full bird rights.
- 43:12Speaker 1: And this is all because of Larry Bird. It's all
- 43:13Speaker 1: because of Larry Bird. Do you care to explain that
- 43:16Speaker 1: situation to me at all?
- 43:17Speaker 4: I Again, I'm not a complete basketball historian, but my
- 43:21Speaker 4: general knowledge of the situation is that the salary cap
- 43:24Speaker 4: came into place sometime in the nineteen eighties and Larry
- 43:27Speaker 4: Bird's rookie contract was over and the Celtics wanted to
- 43:30Speaker 4: resign him, but they couldn't go over the salary cap
- 43:33Speaker 4: to re sign him. So there was a rule put
- 43:35Speaker 4: in place in the collective Barging Agreement that you could
- 43:38Speaker 4: resign your own free agents to go over the salary
- 43:40Speaker 4: cap as long as you had bird rights.
- 43:42Speaker 1: All right, Yeah, it was a good explanation. That's a
- 43:45Speaker 1: great explanation. The well, not a historian, but here's exactly
- 43:48Speaker 1: what you need to know.
- 43:49Speaker 2: In the for the Rams question, I feel like they've
- 43:51Speaker 2: been kind of cooking that team up for a couple
- 43:52Speaker 2: of years.
- 43:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 43:53Speaker 2: I mean like each year they've kind of added a
- 43:55Speaker 2: different place. And mind you, they drafted Aaron Donald. They
- 43:57Speaker 2: drafted they've had it. They had Aaron Donald. He realized like, okay,
- 44:01Speaker 2: they missed, they're missing a qbpiece. They were able to
- 44:03Speaker 2: trade Mats Stafford and they probably feel like got Stafford,
- 44:05Speaker 2: they got Obj. They were close enough if they just
- 44:09Speaker 2: needed if they got like the Obj and the von
- 44:11Speaker 2: Mill and they probably sat there and they're like, hey,
- 44:12Speaker 2: fuck these draft picks, like let's try to win the
- 44:14Speaker 2: Super Bowl this year.
- 44:15Speaker 4: I was made it fascinating with the NFL, like how
- 44:17Speaker 4: you guys can sign a contract and then like two
- 44:19Speaker 4: years later, like a new contract happens. We're like we
- 44:23Speaker 4: you know, we sign a contract like we can't renegotiate
- 44:26Speaker 4: our contract if we're going to make let's say a
- 44:29Speaker 4: guy's gonna make twenty million dollars and a team wants
- 44:31Speaker 4: to go sign another player. They're not going to go
- 44:32Speaker 4: to that player and be like, hey, will you take
- 44:34Speaker 4: ten next year? You know, it's like yeah, no, it's
- 44:36Speaker 4: just like guaranteed, like that's what you get.
- 44:38Speaker 3: Yeah. And then also it's a real issue on.
- 44:40Speaker 4: Harry Beard is like it's like this guy's cat he's
- 44:43Speaker 4: gonna make thirty seven million dollars, but his cap hits thirteen.
- 44:45Speaker 3: And it all.
- 44:46Speaker 1: It really depends on that ship. To me, it depends
- 44:48Speaker 1: on teams and how much like money they have. Yeah,
- 44:51Speaker 1: like if you're if your owner has lots of money,
- 44:54Speaker 1: and really the cap doesn't really matter, right because we'll
- 44:56Speaker 1: be making ten million dollars and his cap it's going
- 44:58Speaker 1: to be seven. Yeah, we're gonna say, allright, hey, well
- 45:00Speaker 1: we're gonna give you nine million dollars in a signing
- 45:02Speaker 1: bonus right now. So now your capit's one and you're
- 45:05Speaker 1: making minimum this year. It's just a crazy concept. Yeah,
- 45:08Speaker 1: it really doesn't matter. And we have a lot of tenders.
- 45:10Speaker 3: We have a lot of like the tenders are wild.
- 45:12Speaker 1: The fifth year, there's a fifth year option where if
- 45:14Speaker 1: you're first you're a first round draft pick, it's a
- 45:17Speaker 1: four year contract with an option for the team to
- 45:19Speaker 1: pick up a fifth year option. Mind you, you can
- 45:21Speaker 1: get franchise tag twice too, because you can literally play
- 45:23Speaker 1: seven years on one deal.
- 45:25Speaker 3: Basically.
- 45:26Speaker 1: Yeah, and if you're out playing your contract, your rookie,
- 45:29Speaker 1: we're about to get paid, they can put a fifth
- 45:32Speaker 1: year option on you. And the fifth year option is
- 45:34Speaker 1: like you make an average of what the top ten
- 45:37Speaker 1: guys are making or something like that, which is usually
- 45:39Speaker 1: top three or four guys make a lot of money
- 45:41Speaker 1: and there's a big there's a big difference in the bottom,
- 45:43Speaker 1: so you kind of average out position at your position,
- 45:46Speaker 1: and then you can get actually get another I think
- 45:49Speaker 1: you can put another option on the guy.
- 45:51Speaker 3: Again.
- 45:51Speaker 2: No, that's a fresh eye stack. That's fresh eye stack.
- 45:53Speaker 2: It's the average of the top three. Right, Yeah, they
- 45:55Speaker 2: have the top three players. But yeah, you get this
- 45:57Speaker 2: crazy on these one year, one year deal and they
- 46:00Speaker 2: have your rights for like Taylor said, like up to
- 46:02Speaker 2: seven years if they actually wanted to. But rookies nowadays,
- 46:04Speaker 2: like if you start out performing your deal, like going
- 46:07Speaker 2: into that fifth year. If like they try a fifth
- 46:08Speaker 2: year option, you guys are getting a lot. You know,
- 46:10Speaker 2: guys are like holding out or saying that they won't
- 46:12Speaker 2: play like that.
- 46:13Speaker 3: You guys will hold out.
- 46:13Speaker 1: And usually what teams do is they'll pick up your
- 46:15Speaker 1: fifth year option and then they'll negotiate as you're going
- 46:18Speaker 1: into your fourth year or your fifth year. It doesn't
- 46:20Speaker 1: really it doesn't really matter anymore, but it just gives
- 46:22Speaker 1: them more time. Just in case, I signed my second
- 46:25Speaker 1: contract going into my fourth year, but they already picked
- 46:28Speaker 1: up my fifth year option.
- 46:29Speaker 3: They have to pick it up by what your third year,
- 46:31Speaker 3: like by like may or may or third year. It's
- 46:35Speaker 3: it's a wild deal. It's a wild deal. The it's it's.
- 46:39Speaker 1: Crazy when you when you're an NFL player and you
- 46:41Speaker 1: guys are we're all sitting here talking about money and
- 46:44Speaker 1: stuff like that, and then we look at the NBA.
- 46:45Speaker 3: It's like, Yo, it's fucking wild. How these guys kind
- 46:47Speaker 3: of just run the show.
- 46:48Speaker 1: It really is just like like mother fuck like these
- 46:52Speaker 1: yous are just making like I think Derek Carr literally
- 46:55Speaker 1: play that much right right right million dollars dude. Derek
- 46:59Speaker 1: car signed his contract, not this most recent one, but
- 47:03Speaker 1: the one before that. And somebody tweeted him it was
- 47:05Speaker 1: like one hundred and twenty million dollars country or something
- 47:07Speaker 1: like that, and he's like, hey, congratulations, you make as
- 47:09Speaker 1: much as a sixth man in the NBA.
- 47:10Speaker 3: Now not true. Well that someone says like that, and
- 47:13Speaker 3: I was like, that's just fucking wild. That's nice, But
- 47:16Speaker 3: the money, stra have you been a non start and
- 47:18Speaker 3: made a nice little baggy?
- 47:21Speaker 4: My two year deal with the Pelicans was nice. Yeah,
- 47:23Speaker 4: I mean I made like thirteen and a half or
- 47:25Speaker 4: something a year and you were in the top five.
- 47:27Speaker 4: And I wasn't a sorry, Yeah, that's crazy, that's wild.
- 47:30Speaker 3: It's good for you. I'm thinking, that's crazy. Like I
- 47:31Speaker 3: didn't play either, give me that. That's crazy. If you're
- 47:34Speaker 3: not a starter and a half million dollars different, it's different.
- 47:38Speaker 3: I don't know how different. How is it? What do
- 47:41Speaker 3: you I played my first year.
- 47:42Speaker 4: At the twenty eight minutes a game and scored over
- 47:45Speaker 4: fifteen points and was second the league in three point percentage.
- 47:48Speaker 3: Go off game. All right, okay, we listen.
- 47:50Speaker 4: A guy, a guy in the NFL who's not a
- 47:51Speaker 4: starter might play ten snaps a game, like there's a dip.
- 47:54Speaker 5: That's my point. There's a difference. So you're still getting
- 47:57Speaker 5: I'm right here on the bus, look at me. You
- 48:04Speaker 5: might not play stuff in the NFL. He's just like,
- 48:07Speaker 5: just look at me.
- 48:07Speaker 3: Man. I didn't say it. You know what I'm saying.
- 48:11Speaker 3: You're you're paid.
- 48:11Speaker 4: You're paid in the NBA based on production, and so
- 48:14Speaker 4: you don't have to be a starter to produce.
- 48:16Speaker 3: That's where the difference is. That's true. And you guys
- 48:19Speaker 3: have like way like less guys. We have less guys.
- 48:22Speaker 4: Yeah, and again it goes back if you're generally speaking,
- 48:26Speaker 4: you have like a max guy or a couple of
- 48:28Speaker 4: max guys. You have a couple guys that get salary
- 48:30Speaker 4: cap which is what every time I was a free agent,
- 48:32Speaker 4: I signed with cap space. I signed with to a
- 48:34Speaker 4: team with cap space. Then you have like the exceptions,
- 48:37Speaker 4: the mid level exception. Then if you're over the tax
- 48:40Speaker 4: you have the tax payer mid level exception, which is
- 48:42Speaker 4: about half of the mid level exception, and then everything
- 48:45Speaker 4: else is like minimum.
- 48:47Speaker 3: So it just depends on yours service.
- 48:50Speaker 4: So like if you're a ten year guy, I think
- 48:52Speaker 4: minimum is two point seven something like that.
- 48:54Speaker 3: A nice man that's a nice little baggy.
- 48:56Speaker 2: I was like, as a tenurey, I think it's one
- 49:01Speaker 2: one front player is from the minimum.
- 49:04Speaker 1: So now you're on our side. You see him change
- 49:05Speaker 1: the tune a little bit. Yeah, that's minimum after you've
- 49:09Speaker 1: played like eight or nine.
- 49:11Speaker 3: Ten years. Mind, this pastor is based on like nine
- 49:13Speaker 3: eighty maybe, I think that's what it is. How many guys?
- 49:16Speaker 4: How many guys minimum? Guys though, that are like balling
- 49:21Speaker 4: that are starting and producing. And I'm not saying they're
- 49:25Speaker 4: like necessarily all pro players, but they're they're good.
- 49:29Speaker 3: They're really good. Well, you've right out well in analytics,
- 49:33Speaker 3: I see. I think analytics is a it's not not
- 49:37Speaker 3: the move, but this is a yeah. Well yeah, I
- 49:45Speaker 3: know you have a bad taste about like analytics and
- 49:48Speaker 3: the peple.
- 49:48Speaker 1: I don't think it makes a whole It doesn't make
- 49:50Speaker 1: a whole lot of sense. Styles like you can do
- 49:52Speaker 1: it for quarterbacks maybe wide receivers. You can do it
- 49:55Speaker 1: to an extent, I feel like extent, but it doesn't
- 49:57Speaker 1: start the entire story. When people say numbers agree with you,
- 50:00Speaker 1: the numbers of the entire story, I disagree with that whole,
- 50:02Speaker 1: whole hearted, And I.
- 50:03Speaker 4: Love analytics in basketball, there's the most beautiful synergy that
- 50:08Speaker 4: I've you know, can witness and Synergy, by the way,
- 50:10Speaker 4: is a name of advanced stats company.
- 50:13Speaker 3: The most beautiful synergy that I can see.
- 50:15Speaker 4: Like, when I analyze this stuff is my eye is
- 50:18Speaker 4: telling me something and I'll hit up a couple of
- 50:20Speaker 4: people I use for advanced stats and some of the
- 50:21Speaker 4: stuff I check myself. But I'm not great on second spectrum.
- 50:24Speaker 4: I don't really know how to operate it. So I'll
- 50:26Speaker 4: be like, hey, it feels like this team is running
- 50:29Speaker 4: way more ISOs this series and they don't run a
- 50:31Speaker 4: lot of ISOs in the regular season.
- 50:33Speaker 3: Can you look that up?
- 50:34Speaker 4: And then it'll be like, oh, yeah, they're running forty
- 50:35Speaker 4: percent more ISOs during this series than they do do
- 50:38Speaker 4: it in the regular season. I'm like, oh, it matches up.
- 50:40Speaker 4: Sometimes the eye test and the analytics they match up.
- 50:43Speaker 4: Sometimes the analytics tell us stuff we can't see with
- 50:46Speaker 4: our eyes, and sometimes the analytics lie to us with
- 50:49Speaker 4: what we see with our eyes. Yeah, Like Devin Books
- 50:52Speaker 4: are an example of this. He is I think third
- 50:56Speaker 4: on he was like third on the Suns this year
- 50:59Speaker 4: and wins right, he's going to be first Team All NBA.
- 51:03Speaker 4: He was top five in MVP voting, like he was
- 51:05Speaker 4: their best player this year, but because of how analytics
- 51:09Speaker 4: great players out, he didn't fare particularly well. Like you're
- 51:12Speaker 4: always going to in the NBA, You're always going to
- 51:14Speaker 4: need volume shot creators, and he's great at that, and
- 51:17Speaker 4: he does it at a fairly efficient level.
- 51:20Speaker 3: And my eye can tell me that. But the analytics
- 51:22Speaker 3: they lied to me. They lied to me. They don't
- 51:24Speaker 3: tell me he's as great as he is. Very well
- 51:27Speaker 3: spoken man, he is. Jevin Booker, you are sure sure?
- 51:31Speaker 2: No, Yeah, I don't know, Devin Bucket answer your question
- 51:33Speaker 2: about the minimum things.
- 51:34Speaker 3: I feel like it probably happens more.
- 51:36Speaker 2: For like defensive guys than offensive, Yeah, because if you're
- 51:40Speaker 2: if you're if you're like on offense, I feel like
- 51:42Speaker 2: when you're like when you're having a year like it's
- 51:45Speaker 2: it's it's easier to see. Yeah, Like defense could be
- 51:48Speaker 2: harder because there's a lot of variables that you sometimes
- 51:51Speaker 2: need to go to your way, like as far as
- 51:52Speaker 2: opportunity and everything else. So if you might see a
- 51:54Speaker 2: minimum guy bawling on a minimum contract, I feel like
- 51:57Speaker 2: it's probably like a vet that's on like a one
- 52:00Speaker 2: your deal, probably defensively.
- 52:01Speaker 3: So here's another question I ask for you.
- 52:02Speaker 4: I'm glad I have you guys on my podcast right now,
- 52:04Speaker 4: but I have another question for you. I'm curious about
- 52:08Speaker 4: this seriously. I think about the NBA and like a
- 52:11Speaker 4: guy who's a free agent who needs to put up numbers,
- 52:17Speaker 4: Like in the NBA, it's a lot of it is
- 52:19Speaker 4: like your points, your rebounds, your assists, field goal percent,
- 52:21Speaker 4: all that stuff, like you.
- 52:22Speaker 3: Need to put up numbers.
- 52:23Speaker 4: And so there's a way for a guy to basically
- 52:28Speaker 4: have goods counting stats, earn a nice contract, but have
- 52:32Speaker 4: literally no impact on winning, either because he's playing on
- 52:35Speaker 4: a bad team or because of his role and he
- 52:39Speaker 4: just you know, he's able to just shoot the ball
- 52:40Speaker 4: whenever he wants. Now, I wonder if the NFL, if
- 52:43Speaker 4: you're able to do that, Like if a guy's a
- 52:45Speaker 4: free agent, like, can you hide behind statistics or is
- 52:49Speaker 4: in the NFL are you just exposed at all time
- 52:51Speaker 4: if what you do doesn't impact winning.
- 52:53Speaker 1: I think to another one that goes for defense, because
- 52:55Speaker 1: you can hide behind statistics in a lot of way ways.
- 52:58Speaker 3: If because a.
- 52:59Speaker 1: Guy, say a defensive end, he can have a lot
- 53:01Speaker 1: of sacks. You can look at him and be like,
- 53:02Speaker 1: oh that you had twelve sacks here, Holy shit, And
- 53:04Speaker 1: then you go watch his film and these he might
- 53:06Speaker 1: not be beating guys one on one. The quarterback might
- 53:09Speaker 1: be holding the ball really long, or he gets flushed
- 53:11Speaker 1: out of the pocket the wrong way. It's an effort sack,
- 53:13Speaker 1: a lot of wait, a lot of waste, which is
- 53:14Speaker 1: one of the arguments I would have had with what's
- 53:17Speaker 1: his name?
- 53:17Speaker 3: Who loves t J.
- 53:19Speaker 1: Watt Jersey Jerry is TJ. Wat's an ubelievable defensive end.
- 53:23Speaker 1: He deserves everything he's getting, but a lot of his
- 53:26Speaker 1: sacks or effort sacks as well, like he beats dus
- 53:29Speaker 1: Don't get me wrong, he fucking murders.
- 53:31Speaker 3: Cats out other statistics for that, like how many times
- 53:34Speaker 3: you beat.
- 53:34Speaker 1: You there are Yeah, yeah, that's where PFF comes in
- 53:37Speaker 1: and play Pro Football Focus. The thing Will was kind
- 53:40Speaker 1: of alluding to with me was with PFF, they gray
- 53:44Speaker 1: everybody every single day, and they they have like these
- 53:46Speaker 1: numbers come out and it's a very difficult thing to
- 53:49Speaker 1: do for my position because you don't there's a thousand
- 53:53Speaker 1: different ways to run one play, and based on how
- 53:56Speaker 1: we run ours it's different than Washington does, or San
- 53:59Speaker 1: Francisco does, or you know, and so when you go
- 54:01Speaker 1: to grade it, you can't grate us all the same.
- 54:03Speaker 1: And so you need to have somebody, let's literally in
- 54:05Speaker 1: the building to know what to do. And that's where
- 54:06Speaker 1: I kind of get off like a little upset with numbers, right,
- 54:09Speaker 1: because there's times there's one I won't.
- 54:11Speaker 3: To go back to this, the task part of it.
- 54:13Speaker 4: You could do your task, but someone through their bias
- 54:18Speaker 4: of how they think the task should be run right,
- 54:21Speaker 4: grades you a different way.
- 54:22Speaker 3: But internally the Titans could be like, oh, you did
- 54:25Speaker 3: that perfectly right.
- 54:26Speaker 1: And there was a point in twenty sixteen where I
- 54:28Speaker 1: was the grade of the number one tackle for the
- 54:30Speaker 1: first nine weeks of the season, and I said the
- 54:32Speaker 1: same thing then too. It's just like they don't really
- 54:34Speaker 1: know what they're talking about when it comes to offense lineman. Now,
- 54:36Speaker 1: with quarterbacks, I think runn backs would be another difficult
- 54:39Speaker 1: one to do. I think defenses will be very pretty hard.
- 54:41Speaker 2: It depends, like with a O lineman that you could
- 54:44Speaker 2: see it like if you're moving the guy out of
- 54:46Speaker 2: the gap, like you could be doing the task, but
- 54:48Speaker 2: are you are you moving him to the sideline. Like
- 54:51Speaker 2: for me as a backer, like I could take a
- 54:53Speaker 2: I could take an offensive lineman on in the hole.
- 54:55Speaker 2: But if we're stagnant or I'm barely getting moved even
- 54:57Speaker 2: though I'm doing the right thing, like I know, mom,
- 55:00Speaker 2: leveraging the right side to our but all these guys
- 55:01Speaker 2: don't know what to talk. Tower takes on more of
- 55:06Speaker 2: a more of a thudder, Dante Hi. Tower takes on.
- 55:08Speaker 2: Somebody puts the offensive lineman in the gap. You'd see
- 55:11Speaker 2: why he'd get like a better grade because he's he's
- 55:13Speaker 2: physically moving the guy more, which could play into.
- 55:16Speaker 3: It a spill.
- 55:18Speaker 2: Yeah, it's so crazy because defense doesn't feel the same
- 55:21Speaker 2: way when you're talking about some of the basketball Stuff'm like,
- 55:23Speaker 2: I kind of don't know what that means.
- 55:24Speaker 1: But he makes that shit sound great. It's crazy, right,
- 55:26Speaker 1: and but yeah, that's a crazy world, more so.
- 55:28Speaker 2: Defense, where you could hide behind staff like dbst who
- 55:31Speaker 2: get a lot of picks. You have like you got
- 55:33Speaker 2: a lot of picks, you made a lot of plays
- 55:35Speaker 2: on the ball, you get a lot of sacks. He
- 55:36Speaker 2: could be a bad run defender, like maybe he's rushing
- 55:38Speaker 2: to get a sack every damn play right.
- 55:40Speaker 3: That's a great point. Yeahb's too. It's like, if you
- 55:42Speaker 3: get a lot of picks, that means they're throwing the
- 55:44Speaker 3: ball on your side, right, or if you're a safety
- 55:48Speaker 3: to safeties do like Kevin Byron.
- 55:50Speaker 1: He's on the Titans. He had a lot of interceptions
- 55:53Speaker 1: this past year and he's just in the right place
- 55:54Speaker 1: at the right time.
- 55:55Speaker 3: Again, full quarterbacks that type of thing.
- 55:57Speaker 1: But if you're a corner one on one like drel
- 55:59Speaker 1: Revis at one point when he was on Revis Island
- 56:02Speaker 1: is like he it was like, you don't even throw
- 56:04Speaker 1: to that area, Like he just lost.
- 56:06Speaker 3: Dudes down the great.
- 56:07Speaker 2: Ones, like they probably won't have a lot of stats
- 56:08Speaker 2: because then the ball's not thrown to him, right, you
- 56:10Speaker 2: know how it is?
- 56:11Speaker 1: So it all comes down Who's who's the cornerback for
- 56:13Speaker 1: the Dallas Cowboys. Keep going ahead and we'll keep going
- 56:15Speaker 1: Stefan Diggs, No, the corner of his digs. It's the
- 56:19Speaker 1: Trevon Diggson Diggs.
- 56:22Speaker 3: He's a guy. I saw a stat. I don't know
- 56:23Speaker 3: if this is true or not.
- 56:24Speaker 1: He had the most interceptions in the NFL last year,
- 56:26Speaker 1: but he also had the most yards given up by
- 56:27Speaker 1: any cornerback too.
- 56:29Speaker 3: But he was all pro. He would play aggressively.
- 56:31Speaker 2: You could beat him on a double move because he's
- 56:33Speaker 2: like looking to get a pick and he trying to
- 56:35Speaker 2: get them.
- 56:35Speaker 3: Pichy, he is a stud. But yeah, like like the
- 56:37Speaker 3: great ones.
- 56:37Speaker 2: But you know how it is, like all those numbers,
- 56:39Speaker 2: all that stuff comes down to like trying to gain leverage,
- 56:41Speaker 2: like in a negotiation.
- 56:43Speaker 3: So some guys it does work out, you know, others
- 56:45Speaker 3: you know it might not. But it all comes down
- 56:47Speaker 3: to probably another thing. Another thing is too just like
- 56:49Speaker 3: supplying demand.
- 56:50Speaker 1: Like a lot of guys would going to free agency
- 56:52Speaker 1: and you'll be like, he's not that good, but he
- 56:53Speaker 1: gets broke off because this team needs there's let's say
- 56:57Speaker 1: there's market.
- 56:59Speaker 3: The markets.
- 57:00Speaker 4: Many tackles missed out on twenty sixteen free agency by
- 57:03Speaker 4: a year. I was a free agent twenty seventeen. I
- 57:06Speaker 4: tried to get a player option for sixteen after the
- 57:09Speaker 4: sixteen year. I didn't get it with my Clippers contract,
- 57:11Speaker 4: and I missed out. Like that summer was bombers. That
- 57:14Speaker 4: was the summer where you know Timothy Bosley and I've
- 57:17Speaker 4: got sixty four million dollars from the Lakers.
- 57:19Speaker 3: Holy shit.
- 57:20Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, we're gonna take a break from old man
- 57:22Speaker 2: and three we're gonna get to bust with the boys
- 57:24Speaker 2: right now.
- 57:24Speaker 3: Yeah, let's go with that.
- 57:27Speaker 2: Dude, I want to talk about like I know you've
- 57:29Speaker 2: talked about it openly, but like your Duke days, like
- 57:32Speaker 2: you were one of the most hated players in college
- 57:34Speaker 2: basketball like history, like obviously Duke as well, but like
- 57:37Speaker 2: it just in college basketball in general, And there were
- 57:39Speaker 2: times where you talked about quitting, and I've seen that
- 57:42Speaker 2: you did.
- 57:43Speaker 3: Is it true that you've changed your number at times?
- 57:45Speaker 3: Like your cell phone number?
- 57:46Speaker 4: Oh my god, So yeah, I mean my my sophomore year,
- 57:51Speaker 4: I've probably changed it ten or fifteen times. There were
- 57:55Speaker 4: so many nights that year where I don't know who
- 57:58Speaker 4: was the culprit who from it was somebody from Duke
- 58:01Speaker 4: that had a friend at another school that would pass
- 58:03Speaker 4: along my number, and you know, it was un C
- 58:06Speaker 4: fans mostly and Maryland fans mostly, And back then I
- 58:11Speaker 4: had the Nokia, you know, and so like I don't
- 58:14Speaker 4: know if you could do this maybe in like the
- 58:15Speaker 4: upgraded model my junior and senior year, but early on,
- 58:18Speaker 4: like you couldn't like an alarm and simultaneously have it
- 58:21Speaker 4: on silent, so I would just get calls all night long,
- 58:26Speaker 4: like thirty forty calls, you know, as soon as like
- 58:29Speaker 4: the number shows up at a Maryland party or at
- 58:31Speaker 4: a Maryland bar, like my shit's blown up, over and
- 58:34Speaker 4: over and over again.
- 58:37Speaker 3: So I, yeah, I had to deal with that.
- 58:39Speaker 4: There were you know, there were times that Maryland fans
- 58:41Speaker 4: would call me, they would call me the Antichrist, which
- 58:45Speaker 4: just like what again, this is true?
- 58:48Speaker 3: No, it's wonder but the watch it goes back.
- 58:53Speaker 4: To why I sort I felt like, in a way,
- 58:56Speaker 4: we're all the main character in our own story, right,
- 58:58Speaker 4: We're all little bit in our stasistic I think inherently. Yeah,
- 59:03Speaker 4: but you know, Duke felt like this this this fish bowl,
- 59:08Speaker 4: and I was like the main character and everybody, everybody
- 59:12Speaker 4: really hated me, and it was it was tough to
- 59:14Speaker 4: deal with. So yeah, my sophomore year, and I may
- 59:16Speaker 4: have told this story with with Dan and Eric on
- 59:19Speaker 4: their pod, but my sophomore year, I called my sisters
- 59:22Speaker 4: to campus. It was during the Christmas break. I told
- 59:26Speaker 4: him to come over from Raleigh and they came over.
- 59:28Speaker 4: There was this chicken place and we grabbed a chicken
- 59:30Speaker 4: sandwich and I was like I'm done, like I want
- 59:33Speaker 4: to quit, and they're like, what do you mean? I
- 59:34Speaker 4: was like, I just I was like, I want to
- 59:37Speaker 4: be a normal student. I want to go to class.
- 59:40Speaker 4: I want to be a frat kid. I think I
- 59:43Speaker 4: probably said I wanted to write poetry. I think that
- 59:45Speaker 4: probably came poetry when you're depressed.
- 59:47Speaker 3: That is the move. It is the move.
- 59:50Speaker 4: And and then I didn't quit. Second semester, I went
- 59:54Speaker 4: into what I would describe as a spiral. I was
- 59:58Speaker 4: out every night nights before games. I would drink twenty
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: five thirty beers nights before games. Yeah, show up the
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: next day.
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: Many beers I counted, really crushing, like the marker on
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: the wrist.
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: I moved after the season. There do you guys remember
- 1:00:13Speaker 4: the OC? Please tell me you watch the OCA.
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: I remembered it, but I did not watch it.
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: That was the show when I was in college. That
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: was like we would record it on VHS. We record
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: it and like watch it later. So it was a
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: Thursday and I was like, OC's on tonight, and I
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: was like, I'm going to see how many beers I
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: can drink tonight. And I started at eight o'clock when
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: the OC came on and I got to like thirty
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: nine by the next morning, and and it was just
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: like that was my second semester at Duke. I was
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: just I was out of control. And a little bit
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: of it was immaturity and selfishness. A little bit of
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: it was rebellion because I had my whole sporting life
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: since I was seven years old. And watch Christian Latner
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: hit the shot to be Kentucky, I was like, I
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: want to go to Duke. I want to go to
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: and it was like a dream come true. And then
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: I get to Duke and I'm like, oh, everyone fucking
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: hates my guts, Like this is not what I signed
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: up for.
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: Why did everyone?
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: Why did anyone hate you so much? Because I was
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: a Duke. I mean, if I had gone to Florida
- 1:01:14Speaker 4: or Uva, like it would have been fine. I would
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: just would have been a normal kid. I would have
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: had that hate vibe home. They do they do, and
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: it's like the white villain at Duke like that was
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: that was definitely part of it. I was next in
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: line for that because we I mean we had we
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: had like eleven or twelve games my freshman year that
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: we played at the beginning of the season. It was
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: like home games, and then we played like UCLA in Indianapolis.
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: We played Ohio State in Greensboro for the big TENNESSEEC Challenge.
- 1:01:41Speaker 4: We'd have a road game till after the new year,
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: and we go to Clemson. We come out for warm
- 1:01:45Speaker 4: ups in the entire student sections chanting shit. Two weeks later,
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: we go to UVA, my home state. There's all these students.
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: I had really bad bacne in college and I had
- 1:01:56Speaker 4: there's all these kids wearing like makeshift white Duke for
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: Duke number four jerseys and they had painted like red
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: dots on their shoulders.
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: Hilarious. By the way, I thought it was hilarious. I was,
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: you know, I was very sensitive. You think it was funny?
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: I did, even though it was really sensitive about you know,
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: my my shoulder acting. I was like, man, that's that's
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: fucking creative. Why didn't you go t shirt unto the
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: jersey then if you're so, if you're insecure about it.
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: It was a rule, we couldn't do it. I convinced
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: him onphomore year. I went into his office. I may
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: have cried, and I was just like, you gotta let
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: me know. Shit shirt under my jersey. Damn you may
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: you say may have? I cried, Yeah, yeah, yeah we did.
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: That's that's a real deal. So the end of my
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: sophomore year, we lost in the final four. It was
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: a it was a low point for me. We we
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: lost to Yukon. We were up eight with like three
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: and a half minutes to go and they came back
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: and I had a chance twice, actually, once to take
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: the lead with like ten seconds left. I got stripped
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: and then I had a chance with like five seconds
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: left to hit a three to tie us and I
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: missed them both, and I just like that spiral that
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: I was on went even deeper, and coach would like
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: make me come in on Saturday mornings to his office
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: and he would meet with me, and he told me
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: during one of those meetings, he said, we didn't win
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: a national championship because you weren't worthy to be a champion.
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: It's like the meanest thing everyone's ever said to me.
- 1:03:16Speaker 4: And it was true, it was true, but it was
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: like so soul cutting right. That sent me further down.
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: So I then my parents, because they knew I was
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: having a tough time for Christmas had given me a
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: toy airplane.
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: I'm like, what the it was a ticket.
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: Basically, They're like, wherever you want to go after the
- 1:03:34Speaker 4: school year's out, you can go. So I'm like all right.
- 1:03:37Speaker 4: I was like, Oh, I want to go see my buddy,
- 1:03:40Speaker 4: duke soccer player. I want to go see my buddy
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: in California. So I planned this trip. We went to Davis, California.
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: We went to the Bay, we went to Santa Barbara,
- 1:03:48Speaker 4: went to La drove back up.
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: Well.
- 1:03:51Speaker 4: By the time I got to the trip, my parents
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: knew that I was in a really bad place. I
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: had seven dollars in my checking account. They're like, we're
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: not going to give you any money for this trip.
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: We'll let you still go on the trip, not gonna
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: give any money. I basically like bummed off people. For
- 1:04:03Speaker 4: those like ten days I was out there. And I
- 1:04:07Speaker 4: got back from the trip, and I was supposed to
- 1:04:11Speaker 4: finish an incomplete because I had k not gone a
- 1:04:13Speaker 4: class all semester either, so I was supposed to finish
- 1:04:15Speaker 4: it and complete. So I'm hanging out my buddy's apartment
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: for like two weeks, and I would wake up at
- 1:04:23Speaker 4: like two pm in the afternoon, I'd start chugging beers.
- 1:04:26Speaker 4: I'd have a burrito party through the night, wake up
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: at two pm. I did that for two straight weeks.
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: No one knew where I was. I told my parents
- 1:04:32Speaker 4: I was in summer school. I told Duke I was
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: back home finishing my incomplete. One day, I get a
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: fucking wrap rap rap at noon on the door of
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: the apartment and it's Coach Collins and Coach Wojo.
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: So I walked downstairs. I've literally got by the way.
- 1:04:45Speaker 3: I have one outfit. I've got. It's an ABC.
- 1:04:47Speaker 4: It's a blue Abercrombie shirt and Abercrombie cargo show.
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: It was the time.
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: It was the time, and I've and I've got these
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: these flip flops that I had bought at the Gap
- 1:04:59Speaker 4: in San Francisco, my last five dollars. They were on sale,
- 1:05:02Speaker 4: and they're like, they're like, come outside. So I'm like,
- 1:05:05Speaker 4: all right, So I'm two, I'm probably one ninety five.
- 1:05:08Speaker 4: I'm two twenty five. Bro, I'm fucking fatty. I'm fat
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: as fuck. I hadn't shaved in like three weeks. My
- 1:05:15Speaker 4: hair is like sa frat boy hair, you know what
- 1:05:19Speaker 4: I mean, a little wavy, little curently right over the years.
- 1:05:21Speaker 4: They're like, you know, come outside. We get in the car,
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: we drive all the way back to camp possible, like
- 1:05:26Speaker 4: where's your anxiety?
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: I when these dudes knock on the door ten out
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: of ten, ten out of ten, which is debilitating.
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: Debilitating. There was bongs everywhere as well, like it was bad.
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: It was a bad scene, beer beer cans everywhere. In
- 1:05:39Speaker 4: a way though, and I'll in a way, I was like, finally, really, yeah,
- 1:05:44Speaker 4: someone came to get me. I was like finally. And
- 1:05:47Speaker 4: so they we go to campus. We're getting ready to cook.
- 1:05:51Speaker 4: This is a random part of the story. But we
- 1:05:53Speaker 4: get we get ready to turn on campus and Wojo
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: looks in the rear of community. He's like, nobody said
- 1:05:59Speaker 4: a word by the way since come outside. Like I
- 1:06:02Speaker 4: just followed them into the car. We get to campus
- 1:06:04Speaker 4: and he's like, so, what have you been doing? And
- 1:06:08Speaker 4: I was like, I don't know why I said this,
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: but I was like watching movies.
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: I was like, all right.
- 1:06:16Speaker 4: So they took me up to Coach K's office. They
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: dragged me through the through the fifth floor. He's on
- 1:06:21Speaker 4: the sixth floor. They dragged me through the fifth floor
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: to embarrass me and shame me, which I love that
- 1:06:25Speaker 4: they did that because wo Joe and Collins are complete
- 1:06:27Speaker 4: assholes and I love them to death. So they dragged
- 1:06:29Speaker 4: me through I'm like looking like shit, and then we
- 1:06:32Speaker 4: go up to Coach's office. We had a lot, like
- 1:06:34Speaker 4: a long hour and a half meeting, and you know,
- 1:06:37Speaker 4: they they basically it was basically an ultimatum. It was like, dude,
- 1:06:41Speaker 4: we're not gonna kick you off the team. We're not
- 1:06:42Speaker 4: going to kick you off camp, you know, out of school,
- 1:06:44Speaker 4: but you need to get your shit together, and like
- 1:06:47Speaker 4: we're gonna get you, you know, the help you need.
- 1:06:49Speaker 4: So like I started seeing a therapist, saw a therapist
- 1:06:52Speaker 4: the rest of my time at Duke that summer.
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: I saw a psychiatrist as well.
- 1:06:57Speaker 4: They put me on a fucking hourly schedule that sum
- 1:07:00Speaker 4: and it was dude, I swear to god, I still
- 1:07:02Speaker 4: have the sheet. Is eight am, wake up, nine am,
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: check in, ten am class, you know, one pm, study hall,
- 1:07:10Speaker 4: two pm, court, three pm, weights, four pm run, five pm,
- 1:07:14Speaker 4: pick up, six pm, dinner, eight pm, you know, you're
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: in your apartment, ten pm lights out. And I did
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: that all summer with they check in your apartment to
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: it was funny because it was two weeks into summer school,
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: so I didn't have i'd have petitioned the dean to
- 1:07:29Speaker 4: get back into summer school.
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: They let me back in.
- 1:07:32Speaker 4: I took a class on the Civil War and there's
- 1:07:36Speaker 4: the start of my transformation as a student as well
- 1:07:38Speaker 4: that summer.
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: I got basically straight a's after that.
- 1:07:41Speaker 4: But because it was so late in the summer, they
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: were like, we don't like all the all your teammates,
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: all the managers, everybody, you know that they already have roommates.
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: So there was this random dude, I don't know his name.
- 1:07:56Speaker 4: There's this random dude on Central campus. They were like,
- 1:07:59Speaker 4: there's a person that has an extra bedroom in the
- 1:08:02Speaker 4: two bedroom apartment on Central Campus. You're gonna live with
- 1:08:04Speaker 4: this person. And he'd no affiliation to anyone I knew
- 1:08:08Speaker 4: any affiliation of the team. And I walked in the apartment.
- 1:08:11Speaker 4: I was like, hey, man, I'm going through some shit.
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: I would appreciate it. I'm going to be friendly to you,
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: but I appreciate it if you just like let me
- 1:08:16Speaker 4: let me be for the next like six weeks.
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: And he's like, what a first impression? Yeah? Yeah, So
- 1:08:20Speaker 3: what did he say?
- 1:08:21Speaker 4: To you, He's like okay, O, good, no worries, and
- 1:08:23Speaker 4: I would like see him like later on, like my
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: junior and senior.
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: Year, and it was like it was like a passing,
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: you know, sort of like I didn't know his name. No,
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: he probably talks about you all the time. He probably
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: talks about you all the time, dude, probably talking about
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: he was instrumental and JJ reddick, jj reddick.
- 1:08:39Speaker 4: Yeah, when I met him, he was going through it
- 1:08:41Speaker 4: was done. Yeah, see what he's done that schedule. That
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: was life changing because that became the rest of my life.
- 1:08:47Speaker 4: And I wouldn't have done what I did in the NBA,
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: or don't even done what I did. A duke had
- 1:08:51Speaker 4: the length of career I had.
- 1:08:53Speaker 3: I was. I mean, from that point on, I.
- 1:08:54Speaker 4: Was a psycho. I was an absolute psycho. It was
- 1:08:56Speaker 4: like diligent routine. My schedule takes precedence over everything. I
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: need to get my work done, I need to get
- 1:09:02Speaker 4: my sleep, I need to eat right. I'm going to
- 1:09:04Speaker 4: go after it like that over and over and over again.
- 1:09:07Speaker 4: And I did that for the rest of my career.
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: Oh shit, dude, that's an incredible deal.
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: Yeah, what do you think like discipline Discipline's the number
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: one thing you need for success, is what you're saying. Well,
- 1:09:18Speaker 4: I think obsession is I agree with that. I think
- 1:09:22Speaker 4: because even with like a creative you don't necessarily need
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: discipline if you're super talented. I know guys in the
- 1:09:30Speaker 4: NBA that aren't as disciplined as I was. I know
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: guys that probably are more disciplined than I was. Like I,
- 1:09:36Speaker 4: it's obsession. It's like the true love, the stuff we
- 1:09:40Speaker 4: were talking about earlier about like fuck, man, I want
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: to go have a beer on Broadway, or fuck I
- 1:09:45Speaker 4: want to go, you know, have Thanksgiving dinner with my family,
- 1:09:47Speaker 4: all those things, like we have to be more obsessed
- 1:09:51Speaker 4: with the other thing. We have to be more obsessed
- 1:09:53Speaker 4: with what we're doing. And I always was. I was
- 1:09:56Speaker 4: always more obsessed with it, and it's you know, so
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: it was like the obsession on one hand. Then it
- 1:10:02Speaker 4: was like learning how to be diligent, learning how to
- 1:10:06Speaker 4: have a routine, you know. I I developed this routine
- 1:10:10Speaker 4: as a pro player. It was like it was sick
- 1:10:13Speaker 4: because my routines had routines, and it was like to
- 1:10:17Speaker 4: the minute on a game day, to the minute starting
- 1:10:19Speaker 4: at eight am whenever I woke up, it was like
- 1:10:21Speaker 4: to the minute. All Right, it's twelve thirteen, I've got
- 1:10:23Speaker 4: seventeen minutes till I need to lunch. It's one fifteen.
- 1:10:25Speaker 4: I've got fifteen minutes till I need to take my nap.
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: I'm waking up at four pm. I'm calling the room
- 1:10:30Speaker 4: service at four thirt Like it was just everything was
- 1:10:32Speaker 4: to the minute.
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: When you do stuff like that, though, does it ever
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: feel like if something messes with that schedule, like your
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: kids are doing something, your wife does something, you can
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: argue with somebody and at fuck super schedual where you're nothing,
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: you're now off the minute? Yeah, it does it fuck
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: up your game? Did it fuck up your situation? Because
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: being that obsessive, it would fuck me up in the moment.
- 1:10:52Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:10:52Speaker 4: There was one example I can think of where it
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: really fucked me up in the game, but it would
- 1:10:56Speaker 4: fuck me at the moment.
- 1:10:56Speaker 3: I'll give you an example of that.
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: My first game with the Pelicans were in toront I know,
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: and again they don't know that I'm like this, and
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: so Jamel McMillan, Nate McMillan's son, comes in the training
- 1:11:07Speaker 4: room and I started my routine ninety minutes on the clock.
- 1:11:10Speaker 4: I'm in the training room, sixty five minutes on the clock.
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: I'm in the weight room, fifty two minutes on the clock.
- 1:11:14Speaker 4: I'm on the court thirty eight minutes. I'm finishing up
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: my workout. I'm back in the locker room at thirty
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: six minutes, like I'm starting that first game. And he
- 1:11:23Speaker 4: comes to the locker room and he's like, hey, man,
- 1:11:25Speaker 4: you're shooting it. He made he said some time that
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: was not my shooting time, and I fucking lost it
- 1:11:29Speaker 4: on him, and I really Jammel and I are cool like,
- 1:11:32Speaker 4: but it was our first interaction that we had had,
- 1:11:34Speaker 4: and I.
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: Was like, what the fuck?
- 1:11:36Speaker 4: What kind of operation is this? That's not my shooting top.
- 1:11:38Speaker 4: I agree to this shooting time this morning, I told you, motherfuckers.
- 1:11:41Speaker 4: Like then, I'm like, okay, I gotta go apologize like
- 1:11:43Speaker 4: seven people right now.
- 1:11:45Speaker 3: Yeah, But that was the game. That's the gaming, like
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: all that stuff.
- 1:11:49Speaker 4: The one time was I was in Indianapolis when I
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: was with the Bucks and we were it was a
- 1:11:53Speaker 4: different hotel than we normally stayed at, and I ordered
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: my room service and it never came and I went,
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: you know, I'm like I'm running out of time.
- 1:12:02Speaker 3: Now I've got to go down. I canna take my
- 1:12:03Speaker 3: bags under the bus. So I went down.
- 1:12:05Speaker 4: I go to the restaurant like, hey, room serves never came,
- 1:12:08Speaker 4: like whatever, they go get it. They gave it to
- 1:12:11Speaker 4: me a minute before my bus time. So I'm eating
- 1:12:14Speaker 4: like on the bus as I'm walking in the arena.
- 1:12:16Speaker 4: And I was like two for thirteen that night and
- 1:12:19Speaker 4: just couldn't I couldn't focus on the game. Was it
- 1:12:22Speaker 4: because of the because of the food, because the food
- 1:12:25Speaker 4: is bad?
- 1:12:26Speaker 3: Like you're, yeah, what do you think about the routine?
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: There?
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: Me up messed up your day? Here's it?
- 1:12:31Speaker 4: So it was all about control for me. You know,
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: I get here's what I can control. I'm going to
- 1:12:36Speaker 4: control this and like you're now you're now fucking with
- 1:12:39Speaker 4: my control. The one thing I can control is my
- 1:12:41Speaker 4: routine and now you're fucking with it. And I'm pissed.
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: Yeah, and it fucked up? Looked yep, two for thirteen. Yeah.
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: See, I've tried to be like that before during game
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: especially in game day. But one thing I've realized for myself,
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: when I do best when I had like I don't
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: try to have control over anything as long as like
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: in my head, I'm like, oh, I just need to
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: feel before this game starts. I could show up four
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: hours before the game starts. They show up two hours
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: before the game starts, it does not matter to me anymore.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: But at one point I was like that right after like,
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: wake up at this specific time, go get in the
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: cold tubs, go from there, Go get a coffee at
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: that Starbucks.
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: Let you know, get the coffee, you go right to
- 1:13:14Speaker 3: the stadium. That. I used to be like that, but
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: then one thing would happen.
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: It would fuck me up, and then I would tell
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: myself after the game, like, oh, that's it's because you
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: messed up your deal.
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: Yeah. I got over that at Duke. Like by the
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: end of my Duke time, I was like, I'm my
- 1:13:29Speaker 3: performance on the court is not because I made three
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: out of four on the last spot of my routine
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: and didn't make four out of four. Like I just
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: got over that part of it.
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: I think it was more about just like it was like,
- 1:13:41Speaker 4: here's what I need to do to peak at seven
- 1:13:44Speaker 4: oh seven or seven thirty seven. Yeah, when that all
- 1:13:48Speaker 4: goes up and it's tipped, like here's what I need
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: to do to peak at that time.
- 1:13:52Speaker 3: So it was that was was what it was about too.
- 1:13:54Speaker 3: Besides the control, it was like there was a reason
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: that I did everything.
- 1:13:58Speaker 4: It wasn't like, well I did time, I shoes a
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: certain way and put on my clothes my jersey in
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: a certain order.
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: But it wasn't about lit perstitious. It was whatever. But
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: it was like everybody's got a few, everyone's got a feel.
- 1:14:09Speaker 3: You have a thing. Do you have a precision?
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: Yeah, not that I'm like thinking of, Like you know,
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: I love a pregame latte. Yeah, but I wouldn't say
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: it's like a superstition, like if I missed.
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: It, I wouldn't like think a certain way.
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: I mean, what if somebody said that we don't have lattes,
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: We're just going to give you an espresso shot.
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: That's like, oh, I'm good, you're not gonna take it.
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: So it's not about the caffeine. No, no, no, it's
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: not about the caffeine. It's just like the vibes going
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: into the stadium. It's like about getting a latte. It's
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: putting into the cup holder, it's turning up zz top,
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: sharp dressed man, Lagrange, all this easy top, Cinderella Man,
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: by eminem A lot of like old school bangers and
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: like feeling.
- 1:14:47Speaker 3: Good walking out the latte. What, no, Cinderella Man. That's
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: a banger.
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: You said the Eazy Top three times and all of
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: a sudden it Cinderella Man.
- 1:14:54Speaker 3: Eminem Oh this ez time.
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: Yeah, sharp dressed man lagrange yet Yeah, like Cinderella Man.
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: Another one, like if if I'm feeling like I got
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: to have like a comeback game or a get back
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: on track game in my head, I'm going to Sendereleman
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: when I'm walking inside, because to me, it's like I'm
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: sending Releman.
- 1:15:10Speaker 3: I'm the fucking underdog.
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: All that kind of So you know what, we're all
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: telling ourselves our story. Yeah, you're always telling yourself what
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: do you need to do?
- 1:15:18Speaker 4: Yeah, that's kind of like I guess I think there's
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: not is that because you listen to it one time
- 1:15:22Speaker 4: before a game and you played well and then you're like, okay,
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: that's my Yeah.
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: Some of that yeah, yeah, like visualization, like running through
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: the same reel in your head about like old plays
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: that you've made, just to like see yourself do it
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: and feel this and feel that. Yeah, it's like a
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: kind of like a routine like that, and then if
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: you have a baller game, you're like, yeah, I gotta
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: go back to that kind of routine.
- 1:15:40Speaker 3: But if it throws off, I'm not like flow state.
- 1:15:43Speaker 4: It's it's like that's the lot the Superman talk about peak,
- 1:15:46Speaker 4: getting to the peak, like hitting the peak at seven
- 1:15:48Speaker 4: thirty seven.
- 1:15:48Speaker 3: Yeah, what are the things I need to do to
- 1:15:51Speaker 3: get into a flow state?
- 1:15:52Speaker 4: Because as an athlete, like, if you're not in the
- 1:15:54Speaker 4: flow state, you're okay, maybe you're shitty, but you're not
- 1:15:58Speaker 4: like the best version of yourself your own head a lot.
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: It's also one of the most difficult things to achieve
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: is the flow state just be like nothing else matters.
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: You're so present right now, you're not thinking about anything else.
- 1:16:07Speaker 3: Yeah, Yeah, for sure.
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: One time in Tampa was like before the fourth preseason games,
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: the first time I made the team out right, So
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: I was in my second year, went through preseason my
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: anxieties at a ten because I'm like, this is it, Like.
- 1:16:19Speaker 3: I gotta make the fucking team. Yeah, And uh I
- 1:16:22Speaker 3: had I had I had ice cream before the game.
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: The night before the game, I made myself up ice
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: cream M and MS had some caramels and fudge on
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: that thing. Fuck and the boy ball like the boy played, well,
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: you gotta let the team and tackles.
- 1:16:35Speaker 3: That game the boy the boy had.
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: Yeah, And so sometimes like that would be my reason
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: for having like I I literally think back to myself,
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: I'm like, it puts me in like a puts me
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: in a good mood. Obviously, some ice cream puts anybody
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: in a game. But I'll like, if everybody's like, why
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: you eat that the night before a game, you just
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: worry about yourself.
- 1:16:55Speaker 3: You just yourself. There are dudes there everyone.
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: I don't know every team you've been on, but Tians
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: have a onunday station every night before a game.
- 1:17:02Speaker 3: You're like, why the fuck is this out there? Makes
- 1:17:05Speaker 3: sense to me, It's like, what are we doing here
- 1:17:06Speaker 3: with this this thing?
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: I feel you guys can agree, but we go back
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: to the flow state thing. When you're in a flow state,
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: it's like the game goes by so fast and it's over.
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: But there's other games where you're not, like, you're the
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: opposite of flow state. Don't know what that is unflow
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: state and you remember everything, Like we played Michigan was
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: playing Notre Dame. It was the night game when we
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: came back. It was like a hundred a minute forty
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: two left in the game. There's like five scores or whatever.
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: That's when Denard threw it in the back of the
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: end zone.
- 1:17:34Speaker 3: Yeah, and we won it.
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: Anti Flow, thank you and uh me and my girlfriend
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: who I was dating at the time, Me and the
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: girls the other time, like I choose on her or
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: she cheose on something happened.
- 1:17:45Speaker 3: Like two days before it happened. I cheated on her.
- 1:17:50Speaker 3: There was there was like a discover there's something was
- 1:17:52Speaker 3: going on. But it was like it was during that game,
- 1:17:55Speaker 3: and all I.
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: Could think about was trying to get her back. And
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: I played the entire game, and I played all right
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: but pretty good decent, but like the whole game, I
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: was not ever invested in that game.
- 1:18:06Speaker 3: I was just thinking, like, how do I make it
- 1:18:08Speaker 3: up to this girl? Was she at the game? Probably
- 1:18:10Speaker 3: it's one hundred and fifteen thousand? How can I tell? You?
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: Know, sometimes you know where your girl sits and you
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: feel like, no, I never knew anything like that at
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: where they're sitting.
- 1:18:18Speaker 3: No, I never. I never had that.
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: And I not to think the NFL, where I knew
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: like people whe people were sitting. Yeah, and my dad
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: would always sit and want a certain spot, always kind
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: of look up at him every once in a while.
- 1:18:27Speaker 4: But my girl, every every game my dad ever came to,
- 1:18:29Speaker 4: even youth basketball, yeah, I'd always like find him, find him.
- 1:18:33Speaker 4: You're the flow state part is like when you're not
- 1:18:38Speaker 4: in that state, you're thinking about what just happened. So
- 1:18:43Speaker 4: it's like that you're carrying something to the next play. Yeah,
- 1:18:46Speaker 4: And I always always be like, oh, should I have
- 1:18:48Speaker 4: a turnover? Okay, that's like a tally. And then like
- 1:18:52Speaker 4: I'd be like, all right, I made a shot. Okay,
- 1:18:53Speaker 4: now we're even Oh I missed.
- 1:18:55Speaker 3: A shoot you are teaching right now?
- 1:18:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I just had a good pass. That's a like
- 1:19:00Speaker 4: then all of a sudden, like, what are you playing?
- 1:19:02Speaker 4: You're not actually in the game. You're like doing this
- 1:19:04Speaker 4: tallies in your head.
- 1:19:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:19:06Speaker 4: It's it was very detrimental to the the overall product
- 1:19:10Speaker 4: that I was trying to put.
- 1:19:11Speaker 3: Out on the court.
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: There would be times where I'd be like so stressed
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: out about games that I would do that on purpose, Right,
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: But okay, all you have to do is just play
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: well in this series and you play this would be okay,
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: that was a good play. I could have been on
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: that play, but like that won't be like a minus,
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: that'll be like I play on that yeah earlier. Well,
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: no that you start playing the like a lot of
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: times the way the greatest like minus zero plus zero
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: did your job.
- 1:19:31Speaker 3: Minus you didn't do your job.
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: Plus you did something extra, something extra there, And so
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: I like go and I have like a couple of
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: I have like zero across the board, one minus and
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: a plus. Bag I'm up and even like a plus
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: to me would be double what a minus was?
- 1:19:45Speaker 3: You know in your head.
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: But you're like playing this game so you can tell
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: yourself I played good any way to tell yourself I
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: did well.
- 1:19:50Speaker 3: What about the feeling of.
- 1:19:54Speaker 4: Being in the arena, being on the field, on the court, whatever,
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: and just knowing that you shit, Like knowing that you
- 1:20:02Speaker 4: are having September?
- 1:20:03Speaker 3: What was the work again this year? Game of your life?
- 1:20:05Speaker 4: Oh?
- 1:20:05Speaker 3: Yeah, we and unfortunately we were all in and you're like, well.
- 1:20:08Speaker 4: You can't escape it, and you feel like everybody knows
- 1:20:11Speaker 4: that you're shit. Everybody knows you're terrible.
- 1:20:14Speaker 3: What game was that?
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: Worst fucking feeling as an athlete? Brochember twelve, twenty twenty one.
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: I So I tore my ACL in October of twenty twenty,
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: I'll have the four right so, and in my head,
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: I'm like, come back season. I'm with the boys, all
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: these all these guys the whole year, telling like, hey,
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: this would be a comeback here. I feel great, to
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: feel amazing, and I wasn't feeling the best. I go
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: into camp and I'm like, no matter, what is this
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: better not be the film I want to see right now?
- 1:20:44Speaker 3: Roll the tape. I'm like, I'm like, I have to start.
- 1:20:49Speaker 3: I have to start a half to start.
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: I go out to play. They announced the offense. I'm
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: fucking women, crowds going wild. I gave up two sacks
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: in that game, got dustin, Well, that's challenge Jones getting
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: five sacks. This dude, Chileng Jones fit. He got five
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: sacks in this game. I gave up two to him.
- 1:21:02Speaker 3: This is me right here getting beat. But it feels
- 1:21:05Speaker 3: like within the first three series, there's a there's some
- 1:21:07Speaker 3: there's this is the next series. This is the next series.
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: No chance.
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: So I stop, stop, stop, stop stop it. So at
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: this point I've given up two sacks. It's the first
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: fucking quarter. Still and I'm like, I've never done that
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: in my life. That's never happened to me ever in
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: my entire life. We're in the first quarter of four.
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: I'm having a horrible game, Like there's no way to
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: come back from it. It's got and it just the
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: rest of the game just got worse and worse and worse.
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: I'll be seen on the sideline and like, you just
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: feel like everyone's looking at you. I went and got
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: an IV because I was cramping. Thank God, that's what
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: this sack is.
- 1:21:40Speaker 5: Go.
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: You can go back the second. This is a Kendall
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: getting beat for a sack. I go back into the game.
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: I played the Tennessee Times my whole entire career. I
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: go back into the game, and what do they say, Uh,
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: the announcer love, the guy's name is Matt did a
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: real fucked up movie.
- 1:21:55Speaker 3: Go Tail.
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: Lajuana's back in the game. The whole stadium, not the
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: whole sam, but the stadium starts booing, and I'm just like, Will, Yeah, Will,
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: I saw Will up there.
- 1:22:03Speaker 3: Me and his wife are in the suite just fucking booming. Yeah.
- 1:22:06Speaker 3: It was tough, dude.
- 1:22:07Speaker 4: It was the worst, the worst feeling in the entire
- 1:22:11Speaker 4: world as an offensive lineman, when you get a penalty?
- 1:22:15Speaker 3: What's going through your brain? Dot care? Same thing? No, No, No,
- 1:22:19Speaker 3: Old Man and the three. We're in the Old Man
- 1:22:21Speaker 3: in the three podcast right now, he's potting you up.
- 1:22:24Speaker 3: Well yeah, okay, go ahead, you know what. You guys
- 1:22:27Speaker 3: have the four. You guys have the four. I was
- 1:22:29Speaker 3: gonna say, what's the worst moment, what's the worst what's
- 1:22:31Speaker 3: that situation for you?
- 1:22:34Speaker 4: Game one, twenty nineteen playoffs against the Nets. I was
- 1:22:41Speaker 4: some shit and they kept targeting me and isoing me,
- 1:22:46Speaker 4: and I fouled out with like four minutes ago a blessing?
- 1:22:51Speaker 3: Did you foul out? You're like, yeah, I'm gonna try
- 1:22:52Speaker 3: and foul out.
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: No, I was a foul out of the Cardinals game.
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: I would have done it is a little bit of blessing,
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: you know what I mean?
- 1:22:58Speaker 4: Yeah, this is the great thing about it with other
- 1:23:00Speaker 4: players that can produce, so like if you're having a
- 1:23:02Speaker 4: ship game, sometimes they'll just be like, all right, we're
- 1:23:04Speaker 4: gonna relieve him of his duties and we're gonna go
- 1:23:07Speaker 4: with the other guy. Yeah getting benched, thank god, but yeah,
- 1:23:14Speaker 4: I and then di'angelo Russell waved me off the floor,
- 1:23:17Speaker 4: he drew the sixth file.
- 1:23:18Speaker 3: He waved me off the floor.
- 1:23:19Speaker 4: And as I'm walking off the floor, I was playing
- 1:23:21Speaker 4: in Philly, the whole Philly, you know, crowd is booing me.
- 1:23:24Speaker 3: Yeah, which there insane thing. Yeah, and like that was
- 1:23:28Speaker 3: that was a low point for me. That was a
- 1:23:29Speaker 3: low point.
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:23:32Speaker 4: The other part was like playing with Chris, and I
- 1:23:35Speaker 4: love Chris, but like he demands so much of his teammates,
- 1:23:38Speaker 4: and there were games where like I would not play
- 1:23:42Speaker 4: well and I would feel like this overwhelming sense that
- 1:23:46Speaker 4: I let him down.
- 1:23:47Speaker 3: You know that I didn't.
- 1:23:48Speaker 4: I didn't reach his level that night, and that that
- 1:23:52Speaker 4: probably hurts more than like getting booed by a crowd, right,
- 1:23:55Speaker 4: because it's to me, it was always about like am
- 1:23:58Speaker 4: I accountable to my teammates? If I'm accountable my teammates,
- 1:24:00Speaker 4: like fuck everybody else, you know what I mean. So
- 1:24:02Speaker 4: that probably those those moments probably were worse.
- 1:24:05Speaker 3: Yeah, they're the worst. It's the whole.
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: Two thousand I'd say, two thousand and sixteen Thanksgiving game
- 1:24:15Speaker 2: versus Dallas Cowboys. Like I've talked about it before on here,
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: but when I missed two tackles in a row on
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: Ezekiel Elliott. Not only that, but Dak would check at
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: the line of scrimmage and I knew, like what the
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: run plays were. He'd be like, he'd like step back
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: and be like whether it be like Pope or Giant,
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: Like I would know what plays were coming and what
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: they were che copies, Yeah, and I wouldn't know what
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: the play is and tell people. And fucking he broke
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: a tackle from me. I like, leave my feet diving
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: off the diving board. And the second mistackle the first
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: one was in my head and I'm thinking, don't miss
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: his tackle.
- 1:24:52Speaker 3: And you know that that usually never works out for you.
- 1:24:54Speaker 3: Universe doesn't hear negatives? Yeah, And then they come there.
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: It is right there, right fucking there, dude, And it
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: was a big back, go back. They drive, they drive
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: all the way down again.
- 1:25:04Speaker 3: I want him to hurt like I did earlier. They
- 1:25:06Speaker 3: they drive all the.
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: Way down and score and we get to the sideline
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: and I'm sitting on the bench and those are that's
- 1:25:12Speaker 2: a time for me when I yea.
- 1:25:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean he had a hand on me too.
- 1:25:18Speaker 3: And then he does the fat.
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: Which, by the way, is he Elliott stole that from
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: Don Robinson. And then they score and I go to
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: the whole Your effort did not look great right there.
- 1:25:28Speaker 3: That's a minus. That's a minus right there.
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, we can go ahead and say that. And
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: I'm sitting on the sideline and I'm wondering. I'm like, man,
- 1:25:36Speaker 2: everybody like it's a Thanksgiving game. Everybody's watching the Cowboys
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: play on Thanksgiving, yep. And I saw an articles like
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: the most televised like football game that year and shit,
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: and it's just I'm sitting there thinking like, well, I
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: wonder what people are saying about me on Twitter. That's
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: to me, that was a moment when I knew social
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: media and other stuff was consuming my mind more than
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: you know, forget the last play, move to the next one.
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: It was more like, I can't miss this tackle because
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: I'm on the big stage and everybody's gonna fucking think
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: I'm trash or no, that I'm trash. And that game
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: is one of those games You're like, man, just get
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: me fucking home and off the field.
- 1:26:08Speaker 3: It's a weird thing. As it's a weird thing as
- 1:26:10Speaker 3: an athlete.
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: I don't know if you've ever felt this way of
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: feeling like you've made it like you're a starter in
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: the NFL, or you're a start in the NBA, and
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: you think to yourself, Man, I hope I don't get exposed.
- 1:26:20Speaker 3: Everyone knows I don't belong here. There's a feeling. Yes, yeah,
- 1:26:25Speaker 3: that's normal. That is Do you felt that? Oh yeah,
- 1:26:27Speaker 3: that's normal.
- 1:26:28Speaker 4: Okay, most I think most well it's years of therapy.
- 1:26:32Speaker 3: Yeah I love that.
- 1:26:33Speaker 4: No, but it's it's I think most high achievers in anything.
- 1:26:37Speaker 4: If you asked, I don't know what the percentage is,
- 1:26:40Speaker 4: but be a large percentage of actors, actresses, musicians, professors,
- 1:26:45Speaker 4: like like, unless you're a narcissist like that has like
- 1:26:50Speaker 4: delusions of grander like you, you really do think at
- 1:26:53Speaker 4: times like I'm gonna be exposed.
- 1:26:54Speaker 3: I'm going to be exposed as a fraud. That sucks.
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: It almost be better to be a narcissist. Honestly, it
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: sounds like it sounds like a nice deal. Like you
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: just don't know. I agree with you that way.
- 1:27:03Speaker 3: Yeah, like ignorance, I was, Yeah, I'm that. I'm that dude.
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: Everyone's like, no, you're not. You're like you guys are haters,
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: But it's just fucking your narcissist. I'm I gotta become
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: a narcissist twenty twenty two, Like shit, narcissist, Taylor.
- 1:27:19Speaker 3: Yeah, let's go.
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: Hey, I do want to ask about your therapy. Do
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: you feel like the therapy stuff is where that started
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: to help you make your shift mentally in basketball? Like
- 1:27:30Speaker 2: what did you learn from therapy about yourself that was
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: holding you back?
- 1:27:36Speaker 4: It's a great question. I think I I I learned,
- 1:27:42Speaker 4: I learned who I was. I think I became more
- 1:27:45Speaker 4: comfortable with who I was. And do you guys ever
- 1:27:49Speaker 4: take personality tests?
- 1:27:51Speaker 3: Yeah, with the enneagram or something like that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, so.
- 1:27:55Speaker 4: You know I've done. I did a bunch of college
- 1:27:57Speaker 4: I did him in the NBA. I took one recently.
- 1:27:58Speaker 4: My wife with me take one, and like fifteen twenty
- 1:28:03Speaker 4: years ago, if I'd taken one, like on the introverted
- 1:28:06Speaker 4: extroverted scale scale, I would be like ninety five percent introverted.
- 1:28:11Speaker 4: And if it took one now, like I'd be like
- 1:28:15Speaker 4: fifty five sixty percent introverted. So I'm still introverted, but
- 1:28:19Speaker 4: I like have gotten enough comfortable enough with who I
- 1:28:22Speaker 4: am and myself and enough confidence and like the person,
- 1:28:25Speaker 4: not the player, but the person because I was confident
- 1:28:29Speaker 4: as a person. I could navigate NBA locker rooms. I
- 1:28:33Speaker 4: could be a great teammate, I could be liaison between
- 1:28:35Speaker 4: the coach and the player. It helped me on the court,
- 1:28:40Speaker 4: you know, I'm just like I think it gave me
- 1:28:42Speaker 4: a sense of perspective about who I was and my
- 1:28:45Speaker 4: value as a human being. Again, it's like I'm nineteen
- 1:28:50Speaker 4: and everybody's like, fuck you. You know, you drink your
- 1:28:53Speaker 4: own pea. The best T shirt I ever saw I
- 1:28:57Speaker 4: was at Maryland my sophomore year and these guys had
- 1:29:00Speaker 4: these white T shirts done and my picture was on
- 1:29:02Speaker 4: the front. So I went a little closer to see
- 1:29:04Speaker 4: what it said. And on the front it said when
- 1:29:07Speaker 4: I grew up, I want to name my kid JJ Reddick.
- 1:29:09Speaker 4: And so when I got close enough, they turned around
- 1:29:12Speaker 4: so that I could see what was written on the
- 1:29:13Speaker 4: back and it said and beat him every.
- 1:29:14Speaker 3: Day, which is.
- 1:29:19Speaker 4: You know, that's savage, savage right, So like here again,
- 1:29:22Speaker 4: I'm nineteen, I'm like, fuck dude, you know, so I
- 1:29:25Speaker 4: think you drink your own piss.
- 1:29:26Speaker 3: No, I never have. I never have. But it was
- 1:29:28Speaker 3: a very clever, So it was I think it was.
- 1:29:32Speaker 4: Like becoming like just just confident, like it's not it's
- 1:29:37Speaker 4: I don't think it's egotistical to be like sure of yourself,
- 1:29:41Speaker 4: you know what I mean. You could still be sure
- 1:29:44Speaker 4: of yourself and be self aware enough to know when
- 1:29:46Speaker 4: you're wrong, know when you fucked up, to know that
- 1:29:49Speaker 4: it's not all about you, Like my dad.
- 1:29:51Speaker 3: That was the greatest piece of advice I've ever got
- 1:29:52Speaker 3: in my life.
- 1:29:52Speaker 4: You tell me that every day as a kid, I'd
- 1:29:54Speaker 4: complain about something like JJ, not always about you, not
- 1:29:58Speaker 4: always about you. That helped me, you know, is a
- 1:30:01Speaker 4: as a basketball player in a team sport. It helped
- 1:30:04Speaker 4: me help me navigate everything. But I think I think
- 1:30:07Speaker 4: that's what it came down. That's that's that's the real
- 1:30:08Speaker 4: benefit Later on in life, you know, as I became
- 1:30:13Speaker 4: confident in who I was, I you know, I still
- 1:30:15Speaker 4: see I've seen a therapist that lives on the West
- 1:30:18Speaker 4: Coast and comes into New York like once a month,
- 1:30:22Speaker 4: and I talked to him on the phone. But you
- 1:30:24Speaker 4: know that more is like almost performance coaching, you know
- 1:30:27Speaker 4: what I mean by that, Like, and he was the
- 1:30:29Speaker 4: guy along with my wife really you know, but he
- 1:30:32Speaker 4: kind of helped me get that last one percent to retire.
- 1:30:35Speaker 4: It was like, but ninety nine percent of the way
- 1:30:36Speaker 4: there for like a year. It was such a hard
- 1:30:39Speaker 4: thing to let go of. And so him and I
- 1:30:41Speaker 4: like met a couple of times. We did a bunch
- 1:30:43Speaker 4: of these like time value proposition exercises, and we worked
- 1:30:47Speaker 4: through some things why I want to play, why I
- 1:30:49Speaker 4: don't want to play, And by the end of the
- 1:30:52Speaker 4: second meeting, it was like, oh dude, it's crystal clear,
- 1:30:55Speaker 4: like it's not even as not even a question about
- 1:30:58Speaker 4: whether or not I should retire. I should retire, Like
- 1:31:00Speaker 4: it's it's time, and I was very comfortable with doing it.
- 1:31:04Speaker 3: So damn.
- 1:31:06Speaker 4: Yeah, if you guys, you guys, don't you guys aren't
- 1:31:08Speaker 4: in therapy see therapists.
- 1:31:10Speaker 3: Oh yeah, therapist every week? Yeah, absolutely well.
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: I first started doing couples therapy before we got married,
- 1:31:15Speaker 2: and then we like fell in love with the whole
- 1:31:17Speaker 2: therapy aspect, like emotional intelligence all that stuff, Like I'm
- 1:31:21Speaker 2: I like love like looking into that stuff because I
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: feel like you're psyche.
- 1:31:24Speaker 3: It's like everything right, like losing control.
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: Of yourself in a moment, like figuring out like why
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: am I reacting to this? Or why am I getting upset?
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: Or losing control or what am I scared of? Like
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: being in therapy and actually talking about like it's like
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: it's like you get the dead ends, like when you're
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: in conversations with friends or buddies or something else and
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: you don't nearly you'll nearly go as far as what
- 1:31:45Speaker 2: you would in therapy, like there's nowhere to go and
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: you're in a safe place, and then they ask those
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: extra questions that actually get you talking about.
- 1:31:52Speaker 3: Like the underlying thing that like breaks you, and then
- 1:31:55Speaker 3: you're in tears for.
- 1:31:56Speaker 2: Whatever reason, and then you come out of it and
- 1:31:58Speaker 2: you're like, you know, you start learning about your stuff
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: a lot more.
- 1:32:00Speaker 3: So I'm glad that I'm glad that this is a
- 1:32:02Speaker 3: safe space for us. Yeah, this is this is definitely
- 1:32:05Speaker 3: a safe space. You work with what's the dow's name.
- 1:32:08Speaker 3: You work with Armando.
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: Armando he's part of cheat Code and it's like supposed
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: to do a bunch of things he does like sound
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: waves and different songs and stuff like that, and you
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: put those on. He talks you through stuff and it's
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: pretty cool because you talk about what's what's bothering you
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: in this moment. It's like a present feeling like what's
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: what's the thing that's bothering me the most? And they'll
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: be like, all right, look forward, like how do you
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: feel when you look forward and think about it? You're like, well,
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: I feel this way. And then you look right and
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: look left, and if you're really present, you can notice
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: like when you look whether it's right or left or middle,
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: like some areas feel worse or better than others, so
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: whatever is worse. He'll be like, all right, let's start there,
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: or sometimes we'll start what's better, and then you just
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: work through He's all right, now fixate on a spot.
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: And then every sixty seconds, but what are you thinking
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: about right now? And then he you start talking to him,
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: and then at one point while you're talking, it'll be
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: rambling him like stop stop right there and go with that,
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: and then you just kind I keep working through it,
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: and I'd say majority of the times ends in tears
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: because you're just trying. Yeah, you're just trying to figure out.
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: You're trying to figure out, you know, why do I
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: you do certain things so that other people approve of
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: you when you can't just approve yourself, Like what is
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: that from from being a child or whatever?
- 1:33:16Speaker 3: And like how do you get to a.
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: Point where you're the only ones trying to prove some
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: too yourself. And it's just it's like you said, like
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: the whole growth thing is it's super it's the most
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: important thing. It's probably it's the most important thing as
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: a human to do. And we talk about reading like
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: we're both like trying to read more.
- 1:33:32Speaker 3: And when I go to read, I'm.
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: Like to look at a fiction book, like a book
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: that's not real. It's not a self help with like
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: it's so hard for me to go and read that
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: because I could go find something that's going to help
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: me like be a better person, you know. And so
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: that's that's something definitely, And it's like you say it
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: all the time, it's the most important thing, like with
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: whether it's sports, being a father, being a husband, all
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: that stuff.
- 1:33:56Speaker 3: On the emotional intelligence, he's doing it again. No, I
- 1:33:59Speaker 3: was not a question. And there's a comment to Will's
- 1:34:01Speaker 3: comment is that Okay, that's right, okay, Kerry. Immediately we
- 1:34:04Speaker 3: start talking it, No, I would say this is a.
- 1:34:07Speaker 4: Little bit of a call back to what we were
- 1:34:08Speaker 4: talking about earlier about what will I ever be good
- 1:34:11Speaker 4: at anything else? And I think what I realized at
- 1:34:15Speaker 4: the end of my career, and what I've realized over
- 1:34:17Speaker 4: the last nine months is like when you develop that
- 1:34:20Speaker 4: side of your personality and developed that side of your brain,
- 1:34:24Speaker 4: you can fit anywhere. Being able to like what we do,
- 1:34:29Speaker 4: what you guys have done for a long time, what
- 1:34:30Speaker 4: I did for fifteen years and prior to that at
- 1:34:33Speaker 4: Duke in high school, AAU, all that stuff, like what
- 1:34:35Speaker 4: you do in a locker room and being able to
- 1:34:38Speaker 4: navigate that year in year out, like that is building
- 1:34:42Speaker 4: a skill set, and by building your emotional intelligence, like
- 1:34:46Speaker 4: you can fit anywhere, you could do anything. I really
- 1:34:49Speaker 4: believe that I'm not going to develop a rocket. It's
- 1:34:52Speaker 4: going to take us to Mars. I'm not saying.
- 1:34:55Speaker 3: But there's other like that that's like almost like a
- 1:34:57Speaker 3: like a skill set that is overlooked.
- 1:34:59Speaker 2: I think, Yeah, i'd agree with you. Have you read
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: emotional intelligence two point zero?
- 1:35:04Speaker 3: No? I haven't. Where do you get the emotional intelligence thing?
- 1:35:06Speaker 4: From the first time I heard it was actually uh
- 1:35:10Speaker 4: is now become a good friend of mine. David Solomon
- 1:35:12Speaker 4: who now runs Golden Sacks. I met him he was
- 1:35:15Speaker 4: not running Golden Sacks. It was not the CEO him. Yeah,
- 1:35:18Speaker 4: it's a little flex but no.
- 1:35:19Speaker 3: But it was like the first time. It was the
- 1:35:22Speaker 3: first time I'd ever heard the phrase. I spoke at this.
- 1:35:24Speaker 4: This was like in twenty sixteen, I spoke on this
- 1:35:27Speaker 4: panel at this retreat that Golden Sacks was having for
- 1:35:31Speaker 4: like tech and media CEOs.
- 1:35:32Speaker 3: I have no idea why I was invited. I really
- 1:35:34Speaker 3: truly don't know.
- 1:35:35Speaker 4: But I spoke on this panel with Maverick Carter and
- 1:35:38Speaker 4: Casey Wasserman and David and I spent some time together
- 1:35:44Speaker 4: at the dinner that night, and it was the first
- 1:35:46Speaker 4: time that he brought it up. Was like, you have
- 1:35:48Speaker 4: good emotional intelligence, you could you know, you can work
- 1:35:51Speaker 4: on Wall Street if you want it. Like, oh, so
- 1:35:53Speaker 4: then I started reading about it. Then I started thinking
- 1:35:56Speaker 4: about like how it relates to my own life, Like
- 1:35:58Speaker 4: it's it goes back to like anything we do as
- 1:36:00Speaker 4: an athlete, like our routine, visualization, all that stuff. It's
- 1:36:03Speaker 4: like it's like that constant flow state, and so like
- 1:36:06Speaker 4: being able to check in with yourself, what am I
- 1:36:08Speaker 4: projecting on other people? What is that person projecting onto
- 1:36:11Speaker 4: someone else? Like I'm constantly thinking about that, you know
- 1:36:14Speaker 4: what I mean. That's why it's been so enjoyable for
- 1:36:16Speaker 4: me to have you guys in my chair and ask
- 1:36:18Speaker 4: you these questions.
- 1:36:19Speaker 3: Be very special. It's been a very special time. Are
- 1:36:22Speaker 3: we doing tier talk? Oh, we get some tear talk.
- 1:36:25Speaker 3: You have some tear talk. We can have some tier talk.
- 1:36:27Speaker 3: Let's do some tear talk.
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: Now my question, so tier talk, you guys are getting
- 1:36:31Speaker 2: familiar with tiar talk. Everybody out there in the audience
- 1:36:33Speaker 2: is something newer that we've done, but it's we have
- 1:36:35Speaker 2: a tear system. We have our audience. There's tier ones
- 1:36:37Speaker 2: out there, Tier twos and tier threes. Now we bring
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: it into a segment where we rate things. Most notably
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: recently has been the burger thing. That's one out there
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: a couple of times where we rate.
- 1:36:46Speaker 4: It in and out, which, by the way, what's your
- 1:36:47Speaker 4: favorite fast food burger? I saw all that my favorite
- 1:36:50Speaker 4: fast food burger Man. It's definitely not in and out.
- 1:36:53Speaker 3: Okay, cool. All we need is the questions over. When
- 1:36:56Speaker 3: the question is now over, like it's fine, it's not like,
- 1:36:59Speaker 3: but you watch my thing and you're like, yeah, like
- 1:37:01Speaker 3: I totally co signed with you. I'm like, it's like fine, dude,
- 1:37:08Speaker 3: this is great. I'm having a blast. Okay, God, we'll
- 1:37:12Speaker 3: talk about you know, let's see what his favorite fast
- 1:37:14Speaker 3: food burger is. Uh, I'm actually a guy.
- 1:37:19Speaker 4: I would probably say what a burger because I lived
- 1:37:21Speaker 4: in Austin and that's probably like I think it's I
- 1:37:23Speaker 4: think it's good. I don't what about we are like
- 1:37:25Speaker 4: solid burger, Like are we doing like it's five guys
- 1:37:28Speaker 4: fast food? Is that not fast food? That's that's a
- 1:37:31Speaker 4: that's a big question people are saying right now. Yeah,
- 1:37:33Speaker 4: because there's no drive through.
- 1:37:34Speaker 3: Drive through, which I do like, I understand it's five guys.
- 1:37:38Speaker 3: Is more on the fast casual side like Chipotle? Basically, Oh,
- 1:37:41Speaker 3: I don't even think him a fast casual. It's the
- 1:37:43Speaker 3: second time I've heard that. Charles said it about Shakeshack.
- 1:37:45Speaker 3: She's like, Shakeshack, like Shakeshack, I think is awesome.
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: She's like, but it's a little more fast casual because yeah,
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: it's not fair there's no drive through.
- 1:37:52Speaker 3: And I'm like, you fancy, yeah, yeah, you fancy you.
- 1:37:56Speaker 4: Think the number one burger is because I'm sure you've
- 1:37:57Speaker 4: talked about you guys, but it's not.
- 1:38:00Speaker 3: That's not fast food. Yeah, take okay, so just drive throughs.
- 1:38:03Speaker 3: I bet you I bet you. Ben and Out Burger
- 1:38:05Speaker 3: makes it up. There doesn't. I was gonna say shake Shack,
- 1:38:07Speaker 3: but shakes I mean Hartys. Wow. Okay, Yeah, Carls Parties
- 1:38:13Speaker 3: is fire. What a burger is good? In and out
- 1:38:17Speaker 3: is good? And I said any but you're thinking in
- 1:38:19Speaker 3: and out burger is better than what a Burger? No,
- 1:38:22Speaker 3: you know you're just saying. I'm lying in and out
- 1:38:25Speaker 3: Burger is better than you. In and out would be
- 1:38:28Speaker 3: your number two best fast burger. Carls Jr. One in
- 1:38:33Speaker 3: and out too. I don't know, man, Once five guys
- 1:38:36Speaker 3: has taken out for you kind of falla because I
- 1:38:38Speaker 3: think shakeshack is good. Yeah, you kind of fall apart.
- 1:38:41Speaker 3: This is a classy bitch, dude. You know what I'm saying.
- 1:38:46Speaker 3: That's funny as fu Alright, So basically so tears off.
- 1:38:50Speaker 3: Go ahead. You rattled me. You rattled me.
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: I'm not even thinking about anymore. I'm trying to think
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: of other fast foods.
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: We just found out that everything really stiled themselves on
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: the last two weeks.
- 1:38:56Speaker 3: It's not really anymore.
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: I think the spicy ketchup is overrated at what a Burger?
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: M Okay because because Texas are big on that perfect
- 1:39:05Speaker 2: the whole. The whole thing for me was coming from Missouri,
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: like you'd be in the locker rooms and when you
- 1:39:09Speaker 2: travel like a Texas game, or will you we go
- 1:39:10Speaker 2: on the West Coast to play Arizona and the guys
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: who are on your team or West Coast like, oh
- 1:39:14Speaker 2: we got to go to in and Out and dudes
- 1:39:16Speaker 2: from Texas immediate argument in the locker about what a
- 1:39:19Speaker 2: burger in in and out? So I always look forward
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: to going to these spots to try these both, all
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: these different burgers, and now that I've had them a
- 1:39:27Speaker 2: few different times each, I do think I wanted to
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: like what a burger more because again I I'm more
- 1:39:32Speaker 2: so like love to just argue against the West Coast
- 1:39:34Speaker 2: people because they're so prideful about in and out burger.
- 1:39:37Speaker 2: But I would say in and out burger is probably
- 1:39:38Speaker 2: better burger.
- 1:39:39Speaker 3: Than what a burger. Try fat burger too, Well, that's
- 1:39:41Speaker 3: not all we drive through either, that's casual. Man, we
- 1:39:44Speaker 3: learned something. Yeah, but on this tier talk we're gonna
- 1:39:46Speaker 3: be doing should we do pizza toppings or pizzas.
- 1:39:51Speaker 2: To where you can combine certain toppings and well, but
- 1:39:55Speaker 2: some people like just a pepperoni pizza Orch's pizza or
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: like whatever, we're not.
- 1:40:00Speaker 3: We're not toppings themselves. Yeah, yeah, that'd be difficult to do.
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: I don't know where i'd stand on that, But I
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: don't know where you stand if I had to rank
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: the number one topping.
- 1:40:10Speaker 3: That's what I'm saying, Like, are we gonna say if
- 1:40:12Speaker 3: if Taylor says show, I don't know how the tear
- 1:40:14Speaker 3: talk were. I think it's best pizza. I think best pizza.
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: Yeah, whatever is your best your number one favorite pizza tears?
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: You know what, We'll do our three favorite pizzas and
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: then you guys will tear it for us.
- 1:40:29Speaker 3: No, what do you mean here for us? Because if
- 1:40:31Speaker 3: we're doing tier talk, there's tier one, two, and three. Yeah.
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: So JJ says my favorite pizza is X, and you
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: say my favorite pizza is why? And I say my
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: favorite peacha is Z. How are we gonna tear that?
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: We can't because we'd al would say that our pizza
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: is number one?
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: Right, But that's what we did with Bert with the
- 1:40:47Speaker 2: fast food Burger. We go one, two, three, like we
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: quietly let JJ have the floor and he does this
- 1:40:52Speaker 2: tier one through three.
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: But if you're just making a pizza. There's no He's
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: gonna make three pizzas for us right now.
- 1:40:57Speaker 3: Off the top of my head. I can go. Let's go.
- 1:40:58Speaker 3: I feel like everyone. Yeah, I can say three pizzas. Okay,
- 1:41:01Speaker 3: I'll figure out way to say three pizzas. You can go, last, Taylor,
- 1:41:04Speaker 3: you can go.
- 1:41:04Speaker 4: I'm always going last. F Now on JJ, you have
- 1:41:08Speaker 4: the floor, all right, Actually gonna go. I'm gonna go
- 1:41:11Speaker 4: in an order of how I want to eat these pizzas.
- 1:41:14Speaker 4: That makes sense, Well, I don't know a little bit.
- 1:41:17Speaker 4: More so, I like, if you go to a great
- 1:41:20Speaker 4: pizza place like lu Colli in Brooklyn, I would I
- 1:41:25Speaker 4: would want to eat them in this order.
- 1:41:27Speaker 3: Not the entire pizza. I'm not that gluttonous, but maybe
- 1:41:30Speaker 3: a slice or two of each.
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: What I'm saying gluttness is one of those seven deadly
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: since I've been glats.
- 1:41:36Speaker 4: So I would start with two toppings that you guys
- 1:41:41Speaker 4: don't actually have on this graphic here, which.
- 1:41:43Speaker 3: Your number one? This is your number one?
- 1:41:45Speaker 4: This is I would say, this is my number one pizza, okay,
- 1:41:46Speaker 4: number one? Like I just want like shallotts and hot peppers.
- 1:41:50Speaker 3: Shalattes and hot peppers. Let's just let them have the floor,
- 1:41:53Speaker 3: did it.
- 1:41:54Speaker 4: Second pizza would be what I call a twin special,
- 1:41:56Speaker 4: my wife's favored pizza. Along with her twin, I'll go pepperoni,
- 1:42:00Speaker 4: white onion, green pepper. And then for kind of like
- 1:42:06Speaker 4: a dessert, I would go with ricotta, sausage and maybe
- 1:42:09Speaker 4: some some stage.
- 1:42:11Speaker 3: Mm hmm. I fucked you guys up tonight. Yeah, I'll
- 1:42:21Speaker 3: tell you what you did. Go chef special on us
- 1:42:23Speaker 3: just now so my man knows it's pizzas well. You
- 1:42:30Speaker 3: have the floor my Tier one.
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: You already laugh because I just feel like you just
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: had some artistic ship and you're gonna go on sausage.
- 1:42:48Speaker 3: This is hard.
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: My Tier one is very hard because there's a couple
- 1:42:50Speaker 2: of pieces I'm thinking about. Well, either way, I got
- 1:42:54Speaker 2: to decide how this Tier one. That's what the hard
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: part is. But I think if I had to order pizza,
- 1:43:04Speaker 2: I think I'm gonna go.
- 1:43:10Speaker 4: Wait, he texted me this last night, so he's he's
- 1:43:13Speaker 4: had twenty four hours.
- 1:43:14Speaker 3: I thought about the entire I thought about my one.
- 1:43:17Speaker 3: I know exactly what I have it.
- 1:43:19Speaker 2: I think I'm gonna go like a Sweet heat where
- 1:43:23Speaker 2: you got pepperoni Halapao's I love onions, so you can
- 1:43:28Speaker 2: just throw onions on them. That's not really part of it.
- 1:43:30Speaker 2: But I do love onions. But you throw like a
- 1:43:32Speaker 2: uh you get the red pepper flex. But you also
- 1:43:34Speaker 2: drizzled honey over top. You drizzle honey.
- 1:43:36Speaker 3: O hot honey. Yeah, MIC's hot honey. Yeah. I like that.
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: My number two is Hawaiian. That's what battle for my
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: number one. I'm a big Hawaiian pizza guy. I believe
- 1:43:46Speaker 2: in pineapples on pizza. I am pro pineapple on pizza.
- 1:43:49Speaker 2: And my number three.
- 1:43:53Speaker 3: Big CPK guy.
- 1:43:55Speaker 2: I love supremes, I love meat lovers, but I think
- 1:43:58Speaker 2: if I had to order, I would go pepperonium bacon.
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: My tier three, Taylor take it from here, brother, Okay.
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: My Tier three is gonna be very basic, extremely basic.
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: It's gonna be your Neapolitan cheese pizza. I think you
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: can't beat it. You got a little bit of garnish
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: on there, you got your cheese, your sauce, and I
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: think it's fantastic with the fluffy crust, it's it's outstanding.
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: That's my tier three. My Tier two is also the
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: Hawaiian pizza, but with a spice. You gotta throw banana
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: peppers on there or jalapinos. I like a little spice.
- 1:44:42Speaker 3: I with you. I have the four.
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: And number one is going to be. I almost said
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: yes when you said sopk because I'm a barbecue chicken
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: pizza guy. That's my number one barbecue sauce. Really yeah,
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: a little onion on there.
- 1:45:02Speaker 3: I think it's out.
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: It's my favorite possible pizza I can make for myself.
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: Barb cute chickens, roburcoe chicken. Now that we're done, what
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: the fuck was that?
- 1:45:15Speaker 3: Dude? Yeah? What did you say? What was your number one?
- 1:45:17Speaker 4: Shallots and what shallots and Pepperoni's shallots? Shalots on pizza.
- 1:45:21Speaker 4: It's a cheek coat. What's a shalat?
- 1:45:23Speaker 3: A shallot is like like a little onion right between,
- 1:45:26Speaker 3: like a red onion garlic. I like garlic, Yeah, I
- 1:45:30Speaker 3: like onions. I mean I like both those cook a
- 1:45:32Speaker 3: little bit shallat and sheldon what uh? Hot peppers? Hot peppers?
- 1:45:37Speaker 2: How some of those are like terrible and grease. I'm
- 1:45:39Speaker 2: just thinking you're Tier one. You're like, hey, JJ, what
- 1:45:41Speaker 2: do you want to eat? They got some with the
- 1:45:43Speaker 2: shallots and not peppers on it.
- 1:45:44Speaker 3: Here's the fuck, man, I am not not a CPK hater.
- 1:45:48Speaker 4: I think I think restaurants like CPK Chili's TJ Fridays
- 1:45:53Speaker 4: like they have their place in America, and I respect
- 1:45:55Speaker 4: them and I've ate a lot of meals at places.
- 1:45:58Speaker 3: Like that, But you're better than them.
- 1:46:00Speaker 4: That question where you guys are eating pizza based on
- 1:46:04Speaker 4: you you guys saying Hawaiian pizza for both of you
- 1:46:07Speaker 4: was number two, and a barbecue chicken, I said number one.
- 1:46:12Speaker 3: I think question that.
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: I think you can't touch barbecue chicken pizza if you
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: have the right barbecue sauce on it.
- 1:46:16Speaker 2: Brother, that's the one thing. Like I mean cheese to me.
- 1:46:19Speaker 2: I was like, but everybody some people like like their
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: cheese pizza.
- 1:46:23Speaker 4: I don't want to sound like a coastal elite here. Yeah,
- 1:46:25Speaker 4: but I'm going to sound like a coastal elite.
- 1:46:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I get it.
- 1:46:27Speaker 4: You like I live in New York. I live in Brooklyn.
- 1:46:29Speaker 4: Brooklyn is the best pizza in the world. Like the
- 1:46:32Speaker 4: sh is discussed, what do you mean the ship that
- 1:46:34Speaker 4: we're talking about, so you would need a sweet heat.
- 1:46:37Speaker 4: I think you ragged it, like, oh that sounds pretty good. Yeah,
- 1:46:38Speaker 4: you said that, you actually did. I think you said
- 1:46:40Speaker 4: that sweet heat sounded nice Hawaiian.
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: Pizzazza fire bro Yeah, a coastal elite, you guys should
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: just sit on the traditional ingredients and you guys just
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: make the best pizza and that's it.
- 1:46:50Speaker 3: That's how I think a coastal elite works.
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: So I think by you doing, by you doing some
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: special like challattes and hot peppers, does that make you
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: a coastal leaders? Make you use your You're just a
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: little fluffy. You're a Tji Frieders with some Fluff's what
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: it sounds like to me.
- 1:47:04Speaker 3: It's just what it sounds like. But I will agree
- 1:47:06Speaker 3: on the barbecue chicken part. The barbecue chicken throws me off.
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: Brokay, I'm not here to argue that part. I've gone
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: downhill within an out burger. I've seen what the people
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: have done. If feal will strw to do to me,
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: I think it's fucking ridiculous. Chicken pizza is honestly shameful
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: of you guys to handle you yourself the way you have.
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: I think it's fucking ridiculous. I think barbecue chicken pizza
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: is the best pizza. Baby cue chicken pizza. No, they
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: wouldn't eat Barbie chicken pizza. We wouldn't feed that to.
- 1:47:27Speaker 3: Y'all fucking up. We wouldn't feed that y're fucking up.
- 1:47:30Speaker 3: You like a Barbie? My daughter?
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: What's my daughter to mellow mushroom last Sunday? She wants
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: to go back this, she wants to go back tonight.
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: Why I probably go get one tonight.
- 1:47:40Speaker 3: You know what I'm in order the barbecue chicken pizza. Nope,
- 1:47:43Speaker 3: hang on, no, I'm like go half and half now.
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: Look here, wine is fucking give a little little heat
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: on it? Right, Yeah, I'll put a little sweet heat
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: on it. Absolutely.
- 1:47:50Speaker 3: I did like the sweet heat vibe.
- 1:47:52Speaker 2: You want to know where you get that pizza at
- 1:47:54Speaker 2: Ahead Midnight Oil. It's off of fifty first no free
- 1:47:57Speaker 2: shouts to Midnight Oil. When you go to Midnight Oil
- 1:48:00Speaker 2: and you order a sweet Heeatza pizza from min iaware
- 1:48:02Speaker 2: with that, let him know the boy sent you.
- 1:48:04Speaker 4: Okay, little something in there once, you know I sent
- 1:48:07Speaker 4: me and uh, I wanted to just sweeteaed pizza. Please,
- 1:48:11Speaker 4: It's it's phenomenal. Really, are you here until tomorrow?
- 1:48:13Speaker 3: I leave tonight? Time? Uh ship a little bit? Yeah
- 1:48:19Speaker 3: something like that? Yeah?
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: Okay, is this one of those show up at seven
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: thirty things? Are we getting there a couple hours early.
- 1:48:25Speaker 3: To my flight? Yeah? No, I don't get I don't
- 1:48:27Speaker 3: go to the airport early. Who does that? I'm not
- 1:48:28Speaker 3: a But here's what.
- 1:48:29Speaker 2: We're trying to ask. Driving there to fly out at
- 1:48:32Speaker 2: seven thirty? Are you getting there at an hour hour
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: and a half.
- 1:48:34Speaker 3: Before we're going through TSA? Are we not going through Tessay?
- 1:48:37Speaker 4: Oh? I see what you're asking. I see what you're asking.
- 1:48:39Speaker 4: You guys flew me down like I'm like this this
- 1:48:42Speaker 4: trip was not on me.
- 1:48:42Speaker 3: We didn't. Oh, he's right now, you know what he is, right,
- 1:48:45Speaker 3: bar barstol Fleet.
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: You're our first guest that we've flown down to be
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: on us. Yeah, we've just started kind of doing that.
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: You should ask for some money, probably would have.
- 1:48:53Speaker 3: Gave it to you. Yeah, it's just my pleasure to
- 1:48:55Speaker 3: be on the show man. I love that your show. No,
- 1:48:58Speaker 3: I don't. I don't think I'm not a I'm not.
- 1:49:00Speaker 3: I'm not that level. You guys really don't like barbecue
- 1:49:02Speaker 3: chicken pizza. I don't like what we're talking about. Are
- 1:49:05Speaker 3: we not talking about We're not talking about people about
- 1:49:07Speaker 3: private jets? Yes, are too extreme right now to be
- 1:49:11Speaker 3: doing that. I don't think barbecue pizza is trash. I
- 1:49:13Speaker 3: just don't order it or I don't like it. To me,
- 1:49:16Speaker 3: it's like, what are we doing?
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: I felt that way about Supreme. It's really just staple.
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: But for me, I'm like, all the extra shit on it.
- 1:49:23Speaker 3: Yours and I said it was solid.
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: You have Barbie Chicken any Barbie CHICKI Chickens in the
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: back there, Chicken Baking ranch. It's number one by far,
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: Like it's not even fucking close that Hobbinaro cream pie.
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: Holy fuck dude. Yes see, that's where it kind of
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: throws me off when you start talking about pizzas, because
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: there's like that's like a gourmet pizza, Like five Points
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: is like Jack Brown's in a lot of ways.
- 1:49:47Speaker 3: The burgers like you can't like just go like if I.
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: Were to say to you, guys are like jalapenos, but
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: the seeds carved out with cream, cheese on on it. Also,
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: it just doesn't make any sense to be able to
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: explain that pizza, you know, saying.
- 1:50:00Speaker 3: I thought JJ's gonna explain something like that. Though he did,
- 1:50:02Speaker 3: I think he did.
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: I still we need an interpret to figure out what
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: he said, Yeah, what was the Yeah, you said a
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: little bit of stage.
- 1:50:08Speaker 4: And that's where I was like, you guys have had
- 1:50:09Speaker 4: like a fried sage leaf before, like a little bit
- 1:50:12Speaker 4: little fried sage leaf on the sausage in ricotta pizza.
- 1:50:15Speaker 3: That does sound like white sauce. Like I looked like
- 1:50:17Speaker 3: a guy that had fried stage on my pizza in
- 1:50:21Speaker 3: your life? You've never had fried sage? Did you have
- 1:50:26Speaker 3: when you grew up? Fried stage? It's seven bucks?
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: Is chicken count expensive? It sounds expensive? It just sounds
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: expensive to me, York Like he's a very expensive place,
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: is it is?
- 1:50:37Speaker 3: It must be nice? But what was that? Why don't
- 1:50:39Speaker 3: you move on in Nashville? What's up? Sorry? I got
- 1:50:42Speaker 3: to do what's question first? Well again, what was the dry?
- 1:50:44Speaker 3: I can get you explained? What what about it? What
- 1:50:47Speaker 3: was what were the toppings? What else? Rikatta, cheese, sausage
- 1:50:52Speaker 3: and fried sage? See, I think capable combo.
- 1:50:55Speaker 2: It sounds like it's like a tasty pizza for sure.
- 1:50:58Speaker 2: But if we're just like inking our pizzas, dude, and
- 1:51:02Speaker 2: you're saying sage and Racanton sausage.
- 1:51:04Speaker 4: I actually the best thing I heard from both of
- 1:51:07Speaker 4: you was just a classic Neapolitan cheese pizza.
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: Honestly, I think that's well, that's because I said garnish
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: to you. Hear, I started sound fancy like you, I
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: said garnish. So basically, what you just fucking said with
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: all those fancy words is a sausage pizza with a
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: little bit of age keys, a sausage.
- 1:51:23Speaker 3: Pizza toast some that green ship on there. As what
- 1:51:25Speaker 3: you said to the person on the counter. You like
- 1:51:27Speaker 3: melow mushroom though I do melo pizza, I mean underrated pizza.
- 1:51:32Speaker 3: I went with my daughter to a birthday party last week.
- 1:51:35Speaker 3: Chuck E Cheese.
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: Don't fucking at me, dude, That Chuck E Cheese is
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: low key fire Peter Piper Pizza for those of you
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: in the West, fired.
- 1:51:43Speaker 3: Chuck E Cheese in a long time. So I'll when
- 1:51:46Speaker 3: and I went that, When and I went there, it
- 1:51:47Speaker 3: was the pretty money grown up so we couldn't go
- 1:51:49Speaker 3: to Chuck E Cheese. That's crazy, that's crazy.
- 1:51:53Speaker 4: We got the fried stage though, Huh, that's a lot
- 1:51:57Speaker 4: of sausage and fried sage. He just said sausage and
- 1:52:01Speaker 4: cheese pizza.
- 1:52:02Speaker 3: I know he did. But he's also he's also like
- 1:52:04Speaker 3: the only thing you guys said good was the cheese pizza.
- 1:52:06Speaker 2: And I'm thinking, like, bro stop anything like you didn't
- 1:52:09Speaker 2: react and I said sweet heat.
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: Yeah you did say I want that because I almost
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: because when you said that's a well, I almost said, hey,
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: we don't react here.
- 1:52:16Speaker 3: We don't react on the t your talk, do.
- 1:52:18Speaker 4: You know, I know, trying to keep it. That's why
- 1:52:20Speaker 4: I was holding it in while he was going picture
- 1:52:22Speaker 4: when he said the sweet heat. I'm pictured.
- 1:52:23Speaker 3: There's a there's a place called Emily in Brooklyn. It
- 1:52:26Speaker 3: makes a great burger as well as this guy. No,
- 1:52:29Speaker 3: it's kidding. Good.
- 1:52:30Speaker 4: Water's better up there, man, Like, what do you want
- 1:52:32Speaker 4: me to say? The water's better for pzza? Why the
- 1:52:34Speaker 4: bagels are so good?
- 1:52:35Speaker 3: And bagels?
- 1:52:36Speaker 4: No, Emily has like a like a sweet heat pizza
- 1:52:39Speaker 4: that basically is the description of what you described, and
- 1:52:41Speaker 4: they do a little MIC's hot honey on.
- 1:52:42Speaker 3: The top and you've had it and I've had it. Fire,
- 1:52:44Speaker 3: it's fire. It's a good pizza. You just don't I
- 1:52:47Speaker 3: think you don't agree with pineapple and pizza. No it suns.
- 1:52:51Speaker 4: I don't wake up you know, well, who's the morning
- 1:52:54Speaker 4: and be like I'm going to think that I can't
- 1:52:55Speaker 4: wait people tonight and I want to put pineapple on it.
- 1:52:57Speaker 4: Like that's just a weird thing to me. It's that
- 1:52:59Speaker 4: mush mushrooms. I eat everything, but mushrooms.
- 1:53:01Speaker 3: I can't. I can't touch. I can't touch mushrooms. Not
- 1:53:04Speaker 3: for me. Now, Italian truffles, I could.
- 1:53:12Speaker 1: Whiplash. I'm turning looking at you so fast, dude. What
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: was the second pizza you said, because you were kind
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: of did a run like a run on sentence.
- 1:53:18Speaker 3: The last special?
- 1:53:20Speaker 4: Huh, twins specials just simple pepperoni, white onion, green pepper.
- 1:53:25Speaker 3: We just got to start naming our shit cool so
- 1:53:26Speaker 3: it sounds better.
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: Yeah, he said white onion, like he said when he
- 1:53:29Speaker 1: said the way when you I'm saying even out there,
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: when he was talking like that, I legit talk to
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: myself like we picked the wrong category that we're about
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: to say sausage and ship.
- 1:53:37Speaker 3: You know we're about to say basic ship. I believed
- 1:53:39Speaker 3: in what I was about to say. I stay, I
- 1:53:40Speaker 3: stay in tintoed down.
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: Yeah, but he said twins pizza. He said ricotta. He
- 1:53:44Speaker 1: used the word ricotta. It stayed cheese. And what's crazy
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: is he been thinking about that since last night. Yeah,
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: he's a homework guy. He's got fifteen pages on both
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: of us.
- 1:53:53Speaker 4: She forgot where I was from the only reason I
- 1:53:56Speaker 4: thought of all those pizzas because when I saw the toppings,
- 1:53:58Speaker 4: I was like, shot, it's not there. Can I ask
- 1:54:00Speaker 4: you a heart went back to the the catalog in
- 1:54:03Speaker 4: my brain. Can I ask you a hard hitting basketball question?
- 1:54:05Speaker 4: Who's the greatest of all time?
- 1:54:08Speaker 3: Man? Who's the go? I like that?
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: Next second part question was Michael Jordan narcissist. I think
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: it's like it's one A one B to me, I don't,
- 1:54:20Speaker 1: I don't. I don't like that answer. I want you
- 1:54:23Speaker 1: to take a strong, sting one A.
- 1:54:24Speaker 3: Who's a.
- 1:54:27Speaker 4: It's weird because Jordan is who I like, grew up watching,
- 1:54:33Speaker 4: but then Lebron is who I played against, and it's
- 1:54:37Speaker 4: hard for me to like pick either one. Kyle Korver
- 1:54:40Speaker 4: once said to me, He's like, you know, like MJ.
- 1:54:44Speaker 4: I know, the accompliment accomplishments are great, but like MJ
- 1:54:47Speaker 4: had to take two years off. So like the discredit
- 1:54:51Speaker 4: Lebron gets for making eight straight finals, I think is
- 1:54:54Speaker 4: kind of insane. So I'm I had to say it.
- 1:54:58Speaker 4: I'm just gonna say Jordan.
- 1:55:00Speaker 3: One.
- 1:55:00Speaker 1: Ah, that was your safe answer, because if you would
- 1:55:02Speaker 1: have said Lebron, you'd got torched.
- 1:55:04Speaker 3: Jordan is Jordan? Okay? Lebron's your two? Oh yeah yeah?
- 1:55:07Speaker 3: What about Kobe? Great player? Great player? Oh you know what?
- 1:55:12Speaker 4: Here's Here's the other thing I've learned, especially in the
- 1:55:15Speaker 4: last year, is the you guys know what a stand is, right?
- 1:55:19Speaker 3: Yes?
- 1:55:19Speaker 4: Yes, okay, eminem callback This song is incredible, too, incredible song.
- 1:55:26Speaker 4: What I've realized is that certain players stands are fucking
- 1:55:31Speaker 4: insane on social media. And I said a bunch of
- 1:55:36Speaker 4: nice things about Steph Curry the other day, and but
- 1:55:40Speaker 4: the question was who do you want in the clutch?
- 1:55:42Speaker 4: More Luca or Staph? I saw that video and I said,
- 1:55:44Speaker 4: in twenty twenty two, I said Luca. And the amount
- 1:55:47Speaker 4: of hate that I got from the Steph stands, do you.
- 1:55:50Speaker 3: Think he deserved it? A little bit?
- 1:55:52Speaker 4: Greatest shooter of all time? Again, that wasn't the question,
- 1:55:55Speaker 4: no game in the line, who do you want the
- 1:55:57Speaker 4: ball in their hands?
- 1:55:58Speaker 3: The question, yeah exactly, And I said, look, who do
- 1:56:01Speaker 3: you want with the ball?
- 1:56:01Speaker 2: Who?
- 1:56:02Speaker 3: Why? Dies?
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: But if he if my man can just pull up
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: at the logo and splash that thing into problem. Then
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: we don't need size. Oh I sound like a basketball
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: right now. Luca is big, he's a dominant player. He
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: can't shoot like Steph. Everyone knows that no one can
- 1:56:23Speaker 1: shoot like stuff. Okay, so why wouldn't you put Do
- 1:56:25Speaker 1: you need a basket?
- 1:56:26Speaker 3: Right? The whole concept of basketball is to put the
- 1:56:28Speaker 3: ball in the hoop. The issue more is like how
- 1:56:30Speaker 3: you go get the basket? You know what I mean?
- 1:56:32Speaker 4: Like, so when I think about like watch, I think
- 1:56:35Speaker 4: I look at statistics because they track those about your
- 1:56:38Speaker 4: honest the best player in the world right now, you'd
- 1:56:42Speaker 4: rather have Luca over him too?
- 1:56:45Speaker 3: No, the question was the question that I got asked,
- 1:56:48Speaker 3: was Luca or Steph? Well, and bus one of the
- 1:56:49Speaker 3: boys WED like to throw in wrenches.
- 1:56:53Speaker 4: You know what.
- 1:56:54Speaker 3: There's like ten guys I'd like to have in the
- 1:56:55Speaker 3: clutch with the ball in their hands. All right, but
- 1:56:58Speaker 3: go on talk to me about Luca. Sorry, I did
- 1:57:00Speaker 3: mean to throw you all this there.
- 1:57:01Speaker 4: What I was when I think about, like, who do
- 1:57:03Speaker 4: I want to have the ball in their hands in
- 1:57:05Speaker 4: the clutch, It's guys like Luca. It's guys like Lebron
- 1:57:10Speaker 4: who have size. Because they're going to create a shot.
- 1:57:14Speaker 4: Whether that's against the double team, whether that's one on one,
- 1:57:17Speaker 4: they're going to create a shot. There's nothing wrong with
- 1:57:21Speaker 4: saying Steph in that answer, by the way, and he's
- 1:57:23Speaker 4: made a ton of clutch shots. I was basing some
- 1:57:25Speaker 4: of it on just this past season. Steph was ten
- 1:57:28Speaker 4: for fifty one from three in the clutch this season.
- 1:57:30Speaker 4: So like, some of that is recency bias, which is
- 1:57:33Speaker 4: another thing I've learned in the media. We all have
- 1:57:35Speaker 4: versus of the moment. I like to describe stephen A
- 1:57:37Speaker 4: as that. It's another phrase that I see that way
- 1:57:39Speaker 4: I use. Yeah, yeah, it sucks. It sucks.
- 1:57:42Speaker 3: I can't imagine.
- 1:57:43Speaker 4: I can't imagine getting the point where like you have
- 1:57:45Speaker 4: a show every day and you're like, man, I got
- 1:57:47Speaker 4: to fill two fucking hours with the same take, but
- 1:57:51Speaker 4: in a different way.
- 1:57:52Speaker 3: That's tough. I like to pop in and pop out,
- 1:57:55Speaker 3: you know. Yeah, I loved what you love the clapping
- 1:57:58Speaker 3: back you were doing on a mad Dog.
- 1:58:00Speaker 2: I think every young generation athlete, young generation person was
- 1:58:04Speaker 2: fairly hype about that.
- 1:58:09Speaker 4: The one thing I'll say, and this is not in
- 1:58:12Speaker 4: sort of any direction towards Matt Dog. The one thing
- 1:58:14Speaker 4: I say is like I and I'm sure you guys
- 1:58:17Speaker 4: have seen this too. I have witnessed and lived both
- 1:58:20Speaker 4: in my own personal experience and my peers experience a
- 1:58:24Speaker 4: lot of tired narratives around athletes. And you know, I
- 1:58:30Speaker 4: remember going through the lockout and seeing articles written about athletes,
- 1:58:36Speaker 4: and I'm like, why is everybody siding with the billionaire
- 1:58:40Speaker 4: owners and not the athletes. It's there's something about athletes
- 1:58:46Speaker 4: that people think we're entitled, that people think we're our
- 1:58:49Speaker 4: only value is to entertain you on a basketball court
- 1:58:53Speaker 4: or a football field, that we're not allowed to be
- 1:58:55Speaker 4: intelligent and speak our mind or speak an opinion, or
- 1:58:58Speaker 4: to protest or whatever it is.
- 1:59:01Speaker 3: And it's so dehumanizing and so demeaning, and a lot of.
- 1:59:07Speaker 4: A lot of the stuff that has gone viral on
- 1:59:09Speaker 4: first Take has been in a direct response to some
- 1:59:13Speaker 4: of those narratives. And that's one example of it. But
- 1:59:17Speaker 4: you know, the other part of it I don't really
- 1:59:20Speaker 4: want to talk about. Sure, the undertone I don't want
- 1:59:23Speaker 4: to talk about, but you know, so much of that
- 1:59:26Speaker 4: is like, hold on a second, Like the narrative is wrong,
- 1:59:28Speaker 4: the narrative is tired. Let's let's start a new narrative
- 1:59:32Speaker 4: that makes sense.
- 1:59:33Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, man, I do want to ask before I know.
- 1:59:38Speaker 3: We've been We've had a long pot. We gotta play
- 1:59:39Speaker 3: another game of pig. Is coach is Coach K a psycho?
- 1:59:46Speaker 2: From the outside, When you watch a lot of situations unfold,
- 1:59:49Speaker 2: it seems like a lot of things that he does
- 1:59:51Speaker 2: seems very calculated.
- 1:59:53Speaker 3: Huh and uh and yeh. So I'm wondering it's like,
- 1:59:57Speaker 3: is coach K? I guess?
- 2:00:00Speaker 4: I guess when? Because my version of a psycho, my
- 2:00:03Speaker 4: definition of a psycho. I I also use the word
- 2:00:08Speaker 4: sicko interchangeably about when I talk about people. Gotcha, And
- 2:00:12Speaker 4: what's your sort of definition?
- 2:00:14Speaker 1: Psycho is pretty hardcore, over the top, very much, really
- 2:00:18Speaker 1: demonstrative on players. Hardcore makes you feel less than a
- 2:00:22Speaker 1: lot of the time, arcissistic, narcissistic.
- 2:00:25Speaker 3: Understand anipulative game that he can do with players. I mean,
- 2:00:30Speaker 3: you played for him, There's been a lot I wouldn't.
- 2:00:33Speaker 3: I don't. I think I think manipulative is the wrong word.
- 2:00:38Speaker 3: I think.
- 2:00:41Speaker 4: The word you use about calculative, I think that's probably
- 2:00:45Speaker 4: more appropriate.
- 2:00:46Speaker 3: I don't.
- 2:00:47Speaker 4: He's definitely not, definitely not a narcissist. He's definitely not
- 2:00:49Speaker 4: a psycho in sort of the traditional sense. He is
- 2:00:53Speaker 4: very intense and he's very demanding, but he's a truth teller.
- 2:00:58Speaker 4: He is always a truth teller. And you know, my
- 2:01:01Speaker 4: four years with him, I say this sincerely, my four
- 2:01:04Speaker 4: years with him, I never saw him have a bad day.
- 2:01:08Speaker 4: Like not what he's on. He's on every day. We
- 2:01:11Speaker 4: get back from Virginia Tech. On the bus at three am.
- 2:01:15Speaker 4: He you know, we lose meeting. You know, we're in
- 2:01:18Speaker 4: there for an hour. We got practice. The next day,
- 2:01:21Speaker 4: he's on the bike at six am. He comes to practice, energize,
- 2:01:25Speaker 4: ready to go, ready to coach. He's like that with
- 2:01:27Speaker 4: every team he's ever been on. He's so invested in
- 2:01:30Speaker 4: and takes such ownership you know, or did take such
- 2:01:33Speaker 4: ownership of being a coach, being a duke basketball coach,
- 2:01:36Speaker 4: like that program. He's phenomenal. And I get to a
- 2:01:41Speaker 4: degree when someone sees him motherfucking a raft or motherfucking
- 2:01:45Speaker 4: a nineteen year.
- 2:01:45Speaker 3: Old, Like I get why people are like, oh, he's
- 2:01:48Speaker 3: he's a psycho. He's a psycho.
- 2:01:49Speaker 4: But like I actually would say, all the good shit
- 2:01:53Speaker 4: that said about him is true. And then some like
- 2:01:56Speaker 4: he's my dad is the greatest man that I've ever known.
- 2:02:01Speaker 4: I didn't have to look far for a role model.
- 2:02:03Speaker 4: Coach is the second. Like Coach is phenomenal.
- 2:02:07Speaker 3: And I.
- 2:02:10Speaker 4: Became friends with him my junior year and we've been
- 2:02:12Speaker 4: friends now for whatever that is, seventeen years.
- 2:02:15Speaker 3: He's like such.
- 2:02:17Speaker 4: An important part of my life and it has been
- 2:02:19Speaker 4: for you know, since two thousand when I committed, like,
- 2:02:23Speaker 4: he's just he's the man.
- 2:02:24Speaker 3: I love that dude.
- 2:02:25Speaker 4: After your little stint your sophomore year when you were
- 2:02:29Speaker 4: brought back and put on a big schedule, did you
- 2:02:31Speaker 4: and him ever talk about it, like reminisced maybe a
- 2:02:33Speaker 4: couple of years ago about it, like, hey, you were
- 2:02:36Speaker 4: was worried about you there for a second.
- 2:02:38Speaker 3: Do you ever give you that he didn't know if
- 2:02:39Speaker 3: you're going to make it.
- 2:02:40Speaker 4: We talked a little bit about it when he came
- 2:02:41Speaker 4: on the podcast in the fall of twenty twenty. But
- 2:02:44Speaker 4: actually the moment we became friends and the moment that
- 2:02:48Speaker 4: I felt like he wasn't just my coach was that
- 2:02:52Speaker 4: following spring we lost in the sweet sixteen to Michigan
- 2:02:55Speaker 4: State in Austin War School.
- 2:02:58Speaker 3: Yeah, terrible, And you know, I had I had gone.
- 2:03:03Speaker 4: Through all that my sophomore year, and then I, you know,
- 2:03:06Speaker 4: got a CC Player of the Year, ACC Tournament, Tournament,
- 2:03:09Speaker 4: m v P First Team All American, I got one
- 2:03:12Speaker 4: of the national Player of the Year awards.
- 2:03:13Speaker 3: I got the Rough Award, and we yeah, let's give
- 2:03:17Speaker 3: it context. Context matters. Yeah, no doubt high point, no
- 2:03:23Speaker 3: doubt point. Uh.
- 2:03:25Speaker 4: So he called he called me into where we lose
- 2:03:29Speaker 4: at the arena. We're all emotional, I'm crying, and we're
- 2:03:31Speaker 4: get on the bus. He's like, hey, come to my
- 2:03:33Speaker 4: hotel room. We'll get back to the hotel and we
- 2:03:35Speaker 4: went in there and we basically talked about that. We
- 2:03:37Speaker 4: talked about that day in May of two thousand and
- 2:03:40Speaker 4: four when he dragged me, when they dragged me to
- 2:03:42Speaker 4: the office. Talked about that summer, everything I'd done. We
- 2:03:45Speaker 4: talked about the season. He talked about how proud he
- 2:03:47Speaker 4: was of me, like I was a lifer at that point,
- 2:03:52Speaker 4: like I was a coach klifer.
- 2:03:53Speaker 3: He was, he was a friend from that point on. Yeah,
- 2:03:57Speaker 3: that is awesome.
- 2:03:58Speaker 2: And then one last thing, another one last thing, the
- 2:04:01Speaker 2: gambling story of you almost coming to blows with one
- 2:04:05Speaker 2: of your teammates. Yeah, I heard you said it was
- 2:04:07Speaker 2: one of the closest times. Uh yeah, I mean I
- 2:04:10Speaker 2: ever came up fighting a teammate. Yeah, I mean I've
- 2:04:12Speaker 2: got I've gotten hit by teammates before, Like you've gotten
- 2:04:15Speaker 2: punched by teammate, Yeah, he did.
- 2:04:17Speaker 3: Turculu used to hit me.
- 2:04:18Speaker 4: He hit me a couple of times, a couple of
- 2:04:20Speaker 4: times when I was like a rookie, and then once
- 2:04:22Speaker 4: again my like my third year, he just like to
- 2:04:24Speaker 4: fuck with me.
- 2:04:25Speaker 3: But I like.
- 2:04:27Speaker 4: He got into a little scrap with Carlos Arroyo, Me
- 2:04:29Speaker 4: and Brian Cook got into it one time. Like I
- 2:04:32Speaker 4: never like came to blows with a guy in practice,
- 2:04:34Speaker 4: but like I was trying to fight find a place
- 2:04:36Speaker 4: in the lead like in the league.
- 2:04:39Speaker 3: So I was just scrappy in practice.
- 2:04:41Speaker 4: And if you're a vet, like in his shoot around,
- 2:04:44Speaker 4: I guess one of the times Turkuleu elbowed me in
- 2:04:46Speaker 4: the in the eye and gave me a black eye.
- 2:04:49Speaker 4: He's just like I was playing too hard to post
- 2:04:51Speaker 4: defense when we were we weren't walking through players, we
- 2:04:54Speaker 4: were running through plays and he just turns and he
- 2:04:56Speaker 4: like noticed it was me and he caught me.
- 2:04:57Speaker 3: In the elbow, got it with an elbow. The Justin
- 2:05:00Speaker 3: Anderson story, basically, everybody in the NBA plays Boe Ray.
- 2:05:05Speaker 3: Do you guys play bou Ray? In the Okay, everybody
- 2:05:06Speaker 3: plays blue Ray.
- 2:05:08Speaker 4: So there's a there's a player's cabin on we used
- 2:05:10Speaker 4: Delta charter flight, so on the player's cabin there's always
- 2:05:12Speaker 4: a table, and then there's a bunch of other seats.
- 2:05:15Speaker 4: So the table is four card games and so playing
- 2:05:19Speaker 4: bou Ray. And there had been some tension building between
- 2:05:23Speaker 4: Justin Anderson and another teammate of mine. They were going
- 2:05:27Speaker 4: back and forth. They sat next to each other, so
- 2:05:29Speaker 4: their actions directly affected the other player's actions, right, whether
- 2:05:34Speaker 4: or not the guy stayed in the game, whether or
- 2:05:35Speaker 4: not a guy went for a boo or didn't go
- 2:05:37Speaker 4: for boot like, it all affected each other. So they
- 2:05:41Speaker 4: were kind of mouthing off, and Justin wanted a pretty
- 2:05:44Speaker 4: big hand to not count because he felt like there
- 2:05:47Speaker 4: was a discrepancy in how that particular hand had been played.
- 2:05:52Speaker 3: And we had been drinking as well.
- 2:05:56Speaker 4: There had been some wine on the flight, and so
- 2:05:59Speaker 4: there was Amir Johnson, me, Jared Bayliss, Justin Anderson diagonal
- 2:06:04Speaker 4: to me, and then there wasn't a fifth seat, so
- 2:06:07Speaker 4: Joel would sit on the arm rest in the aisle.
- 2:06:10Speaker 3: Joel and Vie would sit on the arm rest in
- 2:06:11Speaker 3: the aisle, and UH.
- 2:06:15Speaker 4: Basically got to the point where their bullshit was sabotaging
- 2:06:19Speaker 4: the general flow and enjoyment of the cart.
- 2:06:21Speaker 3: It was ruining the night. It was ruining the night. Yes,
- 2:06:23Speaker 3: thank you. Yeah.
- 2:06:24Speaker 4: So I got a little vocal and then he got
- 2:06:27Speaker 4: vocal back with me, and then I said, you're a
- 2:06:30Speaker 4: little bitch. And he said, what did you say? And
- 2:06:32Speaker 4: I said you're a little bit. I doubled down, and ma'am,
- 2:06:36Speaker 4: I'm not proud of this, Like I just said, I
- 2:06:38Speaker 4: said you're a bitch. And he said, what did you say?
- 2:06:40Speaker 4: I said, I said, you heard me. I said you're
- 2:06:41Speaker 4: a bitch. And then he like stood up on the
- 2:06:44Speaker 4: table and like you know, almost swung on me. Joel
- 2:06:48Speaker 4: luckily like grabbed him, and then all these flight attendants
- 2:06:52Speaker 4: that were on the plane like came, I don't know
- 2:06:54Speaker 4: why they broke up this stuffle, but they broke it up.
- 2:06:58Speaker 4: Had he swung on me like I'm sitting down, he's
- 2:07:00Speaker 4: standing up on a table.
- 2:07:01Speaker 1: He would have won that fight. But I want to
- 2:07:03Speaker 1: know I will gone by the ankles, dude, give him
- 2:07:05Speaker 1: a toss. I would have lost. Dude, those the tables
- 2:07:09Speaker 1: are like here, like there's no leverage.
- 2:07:11Speaker 3: I was stuck. I was stuck. I would have lost.
- 2:07:13Speaker 3: You're a little bitch, dude.
- 2:07:16Speaker 1: You gotta think if you're really going to fight somebody,
- 2:07:19Speaker 1: well he's taking the time to get up on that table.
- 2:07:20Speaker 4: You gotta make a move. Yeah, you know if you're
- 2:07:22Speaker 4: gonna win. That fight was the flight attendants. They obviously
- 2:07:25Speaker 4: fly with all the other teams. The word got around
- 2:07:27Speaker 4: that that had happened, So I had a bunch of
- 2:07:29Speaker 4: texts from buddies around the league that, like, I heard
- 2:07:32Speaker 4: you guys got into a fight, you know whatever.
- 2:07:34Speaker 3: I was like, No, there's nothing, It was nothing like
- 2:07:35Speaker 3: what happened after you guys? Cool? Yeah, yeah, it's fine.
- 2:07:40Speaker 3: I'd have to ask him. Jay's my guy.
- 2:07:45Speaker 2: We appreciate you going on, man, Thanks been unreal to
- 2:07:49Speaker 2: your flight. Hey Jack, is he doing the green screen?
- 2:07:54Speaker 3: All right? Cool? Did I appreciate it? Man? Anything else?
- 2:07:56Speaker 3: Anybody got anything? You trying to? Had the pig one
- 2:08:00Speaker 3: on one? What pig? Uh No, I don't think so.
- 2:08:06Speaker 3: I don't think so. He's scared.
- 2:08:07Speaker 2: Is anybody better than you at the collegiate level of
- 2:08:10Speaker 2: all time shooter Steph.
- 2:08:13Speaker 3: Really yeah, it's Seph would have.
- 2:08:14Speaker 4: I mean, there's other guys that have surpassed like the
- 2:08:18Speaker 4: three point thing, but Steph would have shattered it.
- 2:08:21Speaker 3: Had he played one more year, he would have shattered it.
- 2:08:26Speaker 3: I think I was I don't know who I was
- 2:08:28Speaker 3: having this conversation with. It was somebody the other day,
- 2:08:30Speaker 3: like I think why. I think why.
- 2:08:35Speaker 4: It's like, oh, oh it is omar omar from my
- 2:08:37Speaker 4: house highlights Omar Omaraja now is sports Center. We were
- 2:08:41Speaker 4: talking about this two days ago and I was telling
- 2:08:44Speaker 4: him it's like part of the reason, like the Duke
- 2:08:48Speaker 4: version of me is, you know, there's.
- 2:08:51Speaker 3: A legacy to that.
- 2:08:52Speaker 4: I think a little bit even though I didn't win
- 2:08:54Speaker 4: a championship, and oh, there definitely is. Yeah, there's a
- 2:08:56Speaker 4: there's a little bit of like if you were growing
- 2:08:58Speaker 4: up in that area you watch college basketball. But I
- 2:08:59Speaker 4: think the reason is number one because I played for
- 2:09:02Speaker 4: Duke and like people hated Duke and there was divisiveness there.
- 2:09:04Speaker 4: The second reason, though, is like my draft class was
- 2:09:07Speaker 4: the last draft class before the one and done era,
- 2:09:10Speaker 4: So I feel like my time in college basketball was
- 2:09:13Speaker 4: like the time in college basketball that we all knew
- 2:09:15Speaker 4: and we all grew up knowing. Now with the one
- 2:09:17Speaker 4: and done, it's just different, Like you don't have that attachment.
- 2:09:22Speaker 3: Yeah, you're in and out.
- 2:09:23Speaker 4: Most people don't even pay attention till March Madness anyways.
- 2:09:26Speaker 4: So now it's like back then, it was like you
- 2:09:28Speaker 4: and Adam Morrison, Yes, yeah, and you know, and then
- 2:09:31Speaker 4: you and c was awesome.
- 2:09:32Speaker 3: When I was there, they want to know five.
- 2:09:34Speaker 4: You know, we had some great games with them, So
- 2:09:36Speaker 4: I and they were all upperclass when like all those
- 2:09:38Speaker 4: guys left it, they were all my high school class,
- 2:09:40Speaker 4: and they all left after their junior year.
- 2:09:42Speaker 3: I decided to stay one more year. So I just
- 2:09:44Speaker 3: think it was like part of part of it was
- 2:09:45Speaker 3: like just the era we were in.
- 2:09:47Speaker 4: It wasn't necessarily like I did anything that was that
- 2:09:50Speaker 4: much special relative to other great college basketball players.
- 2:09:54Speaker 3: I mean, you're pretty good, so I was. I mean
- 2:09:56Speaker 3: I was, you know, you weren't decent eleventh overall pack,
- 2:09:58Speaker 3: you're pretty solid. I was. I was good lem the
- 2:10:02Speaker 3: rob it
- 2:10:04Speaker 4: M
