- 0:19Speaker 2: The following feature has been rated R by the Motion
- 0:22Speaker 2: Picture Association of America. It is intended for mature audiences
- 0:25Speaker 2: and parental discretion is advised. It's showtime, folks.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Enjoy the show.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Our nuclear reactor pumping out one million kilowatts of power.
- 1:17Speaker 1: What's up and.
- 1:31Speaker 4: Welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian, and this week, so
- 1:35Speaker 4: is my guest. Yes, this episode I'm reunited with writer, director, podcaster,
- 1:39Speaker 4: and these days actor, well, playing a version of himself,
- 1:43Speaker 4: on AMC's Comic Book Man. But for now, I'm just
- 1:46Speaker 4: glad to have Brian back on the show to talk movies.
- 1:50Speaker 4: So if you're a big fan of Brian's, but this
- 1:52Speaker 4: is your first time listening to our show, be sure
- 1:54Speaker 4: to go back into last year's catalog and check out
- 1:56Speaker 4: episode 357, entitled Two Brians Talking About a Henry. There
- 2:01Speaker 4: you'll hear more stories about Brian's past, as well as
- 2:04Speaker 4: discussing one of his favorite films, Henry, Portrait of a
- 2:06Speaker 4: Serial Killer. It's also a really fun episode about a
- 2:10Speaker 4: serial killer. Anyway, go back and check that one out.
- 2:14Speaker 4: But this time around, Brian is in the area as
- 2:15Speaker 4: part of the Lexington Comic and Toy Convention. So a
- 2:18Speaker 4: big thank you to them for helping make this all-star
- 2:21Speaker 4: podcasting team-up possible. It was a great convention, and you
- 2:24Speaker 4: should go to lexingtoncomicom.com and start planning your trip next year.
- 2:29Speaker 4: But for now, let's get things rolling as we sit
- 2:31Speaker 4: down with one of my favorite guests, Brian Johnson. All right. So,
- 2:42Speaker 4: the Bryans are back together.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Here we are again. People have been demanding it, clamoring.
- 2:46Speaker 4: They're like, there's not enough guys with Y's in their
- 2:49Speaker 4: name that hang out together. We need to get this
- 2:52Speaker 4: going on a semi-regular basis. So, we're back.
- 2:55Speaker 3: We're a persecuted group.
- 2:57Speaker 4: That's true.
- 2:57Speaker 3: The Y rhymes with the Y.
- 2:59Speaker 4: It's a hard life for us. So, how's it been
- 3:02Speaker 4: since last time we talked?
- 3:04Speaker 3: It's been alright. I mean, that was, how long ago
- 3:07Speaker 3: was that?
- 3:07Speaker 4: A little less than a year ago, yeah.
- 3:09Speaker 3: A little less than a year ago?
- 3:10Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Yeah, nothing has changed for me, really. Everything is pretty
- 3:14Speaker 3: much the same, just like everybody's life. I mean, there's
- 3:16Speaker 3: nothing really changed. Unless there's, like, some tragedy, nothing changes drastically, right?
- 3:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Or you have a kid. One of the two.
- 3:22Speaker 4: Yeah. Or occasionally change the job scenario, but you still got,
- 3:26Speaker 4: you know, you're still doing the show, so.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Still doing the show, yeah. Like, I think we have, honestly,
- 3:33Speaker 3: I don't watch it, so I don't know how many
- 3:36Speaker 3: more we have. Maybe one or two more episodes, I think.
- 3:40Speaker 4: I just see now they're really bringing in the names
- 3:42Speaker 4: because I was watching the other day and go, hey,
- 3:44Speaker 4: Ralph Macchio, hold on a minute.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Yeah, you know what? I thought the same. He turned
- 3:48Speaker 3: out to be my favorite guest of the entire season.
- 3:49Speaker 4: Yeah, he seemed really cool.
- 3:51Speaker 3: And he was so cool off screen, just like his reputation,
- 3:57Speaker 3: which you know, is one of like super nice dude.
- 4:01Speaker 3: So much so that like, you know, they made the
- 4:03Speaker 3: Funny or Die video about him. And it's true. It's true.
- 4:07Speaker 3: It's just really nice.
- 4:08Speaker 4: You guys had a karate fight in the parking lot, right?
- 4:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:11Speaker 4: Crane kicked his ass.
- 4:12Speaker 3: That's what he wanted. He had certain things he was like, okay,
- 4:16Speaker 3: I'm not doing the crane kick. I'm not doing the chopsticks. Yeah,
- 4:20Speaker 3: it has to suck. Because everyone's like.
- 4:22Speaker 4: And yet, I think you still did at least one.
- 4:25Speaker 4: You still got brushed up. Maybe both of those. Just
- 4:29Speaker 4: toying with Ralph Macchio.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it was Ming's charm that won him over, so...
- 4:34Speaker 3: He sort of got into it. Because he was a
- 4:35Speaker 3: little bit reticent at first. And then once he saw
- 4:38Speaker 3: how sort of chill everybody was and nobody was going
- 4:43Speaker 3: to be demanding and it was fun, he was like, oh,
- 4:45Speaker 3: fuck it then.
- 4:47Speaker 4: That's the thing. I feel like if there is sort
- 4:49Speaker 4: of a normal geek level to you, you just recognize
- 4:52Speaker 4: your own and you kind of bond.
- 4:53Speaker 5: And it's cool.
- 4:54Speaker 4: So it is weird. I do get both modes. I'll
- 4:57Speaker 4: talk to actors that are just actors. That's their thing.
- 5:01Speaker 4: they don't really have the geek vibe to them at all.
- 5:04Speaker 4: And like, they really don't connect with people in the
- 5:07Speaker 4: same way as like somebody who was just sort of
- 5:09Speaker 4: a fan and also ended up getting into the business
- 5:12Speaker 4: that they're in. And like, they just, there's still something
- 5:15Speaker 4: that just clicks with them. And like, it's a geek thing.
- 5:17Speaker 3: Yeah. We had Katrina Law on from Arrow this year
- 5:21Speaker 3: and she wasn't familiar with the world until she got
- 5:26Speaker 3: the role. And then, you were like well i want
- 5:28Speaker 3: to read about my the backstory and then she like
- 5:31Speaker 3: it got her into comics and shit which is really
- 5:33Speaker 3: weird you know but.
- 5:34Speaker 4: You know i guess if if it's it's a it's
- 5:36Speaker 4: a recessive gene but you.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Can like activate.
- 5:39Speaker 4: It electrify it with a paycheck and then oh wait
- 5:42Speaker 4: a minute i do like these things.
- 5:44Speaker 3: You know what i couldn't believe like i walked away
- 5:46Speaker 3: from it like i only remembered a couple days after
- 5:49Speaker 3: the last time we we talked we talked about henry
- 5:51Speaker 3: portrait of a serial killer yeah and um Like, three
- 5:54Speaker 3: days later, I was like, oh, my God, I can't remember.
- 5:57Speaker 3: I forgot this. But I have a mother who always
- 6:02Speaker 3: likes to point out that I'm not, like, a complete
- 6:05Speaker 3: and utter failure. So she's like, oh, my son's on TV.
- 6:08Speaker 3: And my son does this and that. But she'll tell
- 6:12Speaker 3: anyone who will listen. That's a mother, yeah. So she
- 6:16Speaker 3: goes to this food store, grocery store nearby where we live.
- 6:20Speaker 3: And she had... She had hurt her leg or something,
- 6:25Speaker 3: so I went with her to help her shop and stuff.
- 6:28Speaker 3: We get into the line, and I guess she goes
- 6:31Speaker 3: enough that she's like a regular cashier, right? And so
- 6:36Speaker 3: she's talking to the guy, and for whatever reason brings
- 6:40Speaker 3: it up, and I'm like, I can't stand that shit.
- 6:43Speaker 3: But he was like, oh, I used to... I used
- 6:46Speaker 3: to work in Hollywood a little bit. He's probably in
- 6:49Speaker 3: his 50s, late 50s or something. And I was like, oh, yeah.
- 6:56Speaker 3: And thinking maybe he's an extra or something. And his
- 7:01Speaker 3: name tag says Richard. And I said, what did you do?
- 7:05Speaker 3: And he goes, I wrote Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Holy shit. And I'm like, okay. Sure you did.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Whatever crazy. I mean, just bag my groceries and get out.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Yeah, because I thought that only John had written it.
- 7:19Speaker 3: And then I look back. I go to the credits,
- 7:23Speaker 3: and I guess I didn't know my history as well
- 7:24Speaker 3: as I thought I did. And there's a co-writer named
- 7:27Speaker 3: Richard Fire. This guy was Richard Fire, right? Co-writer of, obviously,
- 7:34Speaker 3: one of the greatest cult books.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Movies game changing darkest indie movies yeah of all.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Time and I wasn't impressed I was horrified because I'm
- 7:45Speaker 3: like oh my god he's begging yeah if you if
- 7:49Speaker 3: someone if you could co-write something that great yeah what
- 7:53Speaker 3: happened and I looked up his credits and it was
- 7:56Speaker 3: like one or two other things like a play or
- 7:58Speaker 3: something and then he'd just get out of the business
- 7:59Speaker 3: and he was like he was happy he seemed totally
- 8:01Speaker 3: fine and I'm like is that going to happen to
- 8:04Speaker 3: me because I feel like I'm going to go the
- 8:05Speaker 3: other way I'm going to be like I guess I'll
- 8:07Speaker 3: just hang myself. I knew it was always going to
- 8:09Speaker 3: happen one day.
- 8:10Speaker 4: There's a step in between. There's living on the street.
- 8:13Speaker 3: Come on now.
- 8:14Speaker 4: I've got a box all picked out.
- 8:17Speaker 3: But then he died like a year or two later.
- 8:19Speaker 3: I don't know where it was from. He was relatively young.
- 8:23Speaker 3: But I was like, at first I couldn't believe I
- 8:25Speaker 3: forgot that story. And then secondly, I was like, oh man.
- 8:28Speaker 3: I told Rooker and I was like, it scared me.
- 8:33Speaker 3: It scared me to To think like you could be
- 8:38Speaker 3: working in Hollywood and make something so monumental. And then
- 8:42Speaker 3: the next thing you know, you're listening to some old
- 8:45Speaker 3: woman like quack about her son and shit. And he goes,
- 8:48Speaker 3: that's why we do these cons, brother. You're going to
- 8:50Speaker 3: save every dime.
- 8:52Speaker 4: I mean, that's it. Well, and some of them just
- 8:54Speaker 4: sort of decide to do something. Like somebody that gets
- 8:57Speaker 4: super successful. And the weird one for me was like,
- 9:01Speaker 4: and big surprise, I worked at a video store. So
- 9:04Speaker 4: we had this guy who came and would recycle the plastic.
- 9:07Speaker 4: So we had the trash can and we had here's
- 9:09Speaker 4: where all the recycles go. And like once a week
- 9:11Speaker 4: this guy rolls in and he's like probably like 60s
- 9:15Speaker 4: or so. And he came in and he would get
- 9:17Speaker 4: our recycling. He was super friendly with the guys that were,
- 9:19Speaker 4: you know, the regular people that work there. And eventually
- 9:22Speaker 4: like at some point they said something to him. And
- 9:25Speaker 4: like it like dominoed and you're like, wait. At some point,
- 9:30Speaker 4: I think he mentioned being a pilot or something. Okay,
- 9:33Speaker 4: not only did he used to be a pilot, he
- 9:35Speaker 4: was a helicopter pilot. He was Jacques Cousteau's helicopter pilot
- 9:40Speaker 4: for 16 years and became his aerial photographer for half
- 9:46Speaker 4: of the stuff that he shot. Not the really early
- 9:48Speaker 4: weird documentaries, but all the stuff later that probably all
- 9:52Speaker 4: ran on TV nonstop. He was doing the flying and
- 9:55Speaker 4: was deciding which way to get the shot so that
- 9:58Speaker 4: the coastline would look perfect. And now he's driving around
- 10:01Speaker 4: picking up people's plastic. But I talked to him. We
- 10:05Speaker 4: had him on the show. And then he just decided
- 10:08Speaker 4: to do something else. And he created that company and
- 10:11Speaker 4: wanted to recycle and give back to the earth or something.
- 10:14Speaker 4: And I was just like, oh. Okay.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Something you never think about doing, and he's probably making
- 10:19Speaker 3: a mint doing it.
- 10:20Speaker 4: Yeah, he's probably doing just fine. But I'm just like,
- 10:22Speaker 4: but you used to fly. He did a Q & A.
- 10:26Speaker 4: They did a movie showing at one point with him
- 10:28Speaker 4: of one of the documentaries. And he talked about meeting
- 10:31Speaker 4: Castro at one point. Like, he talked about, like, having
- 10:36Speaker 4: the police, like, lock down where they were at because
- 10:39Speaker 4: they were going to get shot. Because he was flying
- 10:40Speaker 4: into Cuba, obviously. They were going to get shot at. So,
- 10:43Speaker 4: I'm like, there's telling these, like, war stories, literally, almost.
- 10:47Speaker 4: And I'm just like, and now you drive around and
- 10:49Speaker 4: pick up people's bottles. It's so funny to me. I'm
- 10:53Speaker 4: just like, all right.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Yeah, it seems like the adrenaline pump. The adrenaline rush
- 10:58Speaker 3: would be just a little bit less picking up plastic
- 11:01Speaker 3: than flying through international air that you may get shot down.
- 11:06Speaker 4: You never know. Or waiting to watch a whale fly
- 11:09Speaker 4: out at your head.
- 11:10Speaker 3: When I was a kid, I always liked the Jacques
- 11:13Speaker 3: Cousteau stuff. I can't remember the book, but I was reading.
- 11:17Speaker 3: It's really turned me off to Jacques Cousteau. So many
- 11:22Speaker 3: people are like, who the hell is Jacques Cousteau?
- 11:23Speaker 4: Well, yeah, I guess we're reaching back for that reference anyway, but...
- 11:26Speaker 4: If you know who he is, he's huge.
- 11:28Speaker 3: Yeah, he was huge in the 70s. But I guess
- 11:31Speaker 3: they were trying to get the shot of this octopus.
- 11:35Speaker 3: And the octopus was like he was in a tank
- 11:37Speaker 3: or something. And he wasn't really doing much. He was
- 11:39Speaker 3: just kind of hanging out. And they couldn't get him
- 11:41Speaker 3: to like swim around. And they poured bleach into his tank.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Did you read that?
- 11:46Speaker 4: No, but this doesn't really. But that's the thing. We
- 11:50Speaker 4: all kind of knew. And I think he changed his way.
- 11:53Speaker 4: That may have been like an early story because that's
- 11:55Speaker 4: the thing. I think later he became a real advocate
- 11:57Speaker 4: for animal rights and was trying to help the environment.
- 12:01Speaker 4: But if you go back to his early days, they're
- 12:04Speaker 4: just like freaking cowboys. They did whatever the hell they
- 12:06Speaker 4: wanted to do because nobody was doing that stuff. And
- 12:08Speaker 4: they were so, again, international waters. They did whatever the
- 12:10Speaker 4: hell they wanted. So if you go back and watch
- 12:13Speaker 4: that first, I'm trying to remember what it is. It's
- 12:14Speaker 4: like the very first theatrical documentary he did. The photography
- 12:18Speaker 4: is gorgeous, but the shit that goes on in that
- 12:23Speaker 4: movie that's now available on DVD. At one point, they
- 12:27Speaker 4: decide they want to catalog all the fish. Well, they
- 12:30Speaker 4: don't know how to catch them all, so instead they
- 12:32Speaker 4: dynamite the area and throw them out on the beach
- 12:36Speaker 4: and count out how many of each type of fish
- 12:38Speaker 4: they have. That was the method for cataloging the fish
- 12:41Speaker 4: that they had.
- 12:42Speaker 3: That must be accurate.
- 12:44Speaker 4: They also, at one point, they, there's a, there's sharks
- 12:49Speaker 4: that are attacking like some whales, which again, this is
- 12:51Speaker 4: just sort of nature, but they decide, oh, they're attacking
- 12:55Speaker 4: this poor baby whale. So they pull the, they get
- 12:58Speaker 4: a hold of the sharks and like pull them up
- 13:00Speaker 4: on deck and are then beating it with like a bat.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 13:04Speaker 4: And I'm like, the shark's just doing what he does. He's,
- 13:07Speaker 4: He is a killer. The baby may have been the
- 13:10Speaker 4: runt of the bunch. He's doing what nature intended. You guys,
- 13:14Speaker 4: on the other hand, oh, there's a couple of different
- 13:16Speaker 4: things that I'm just like, that could never happen. First
- 13:20Speaker 4: of all, that would never happen. Second of all, if
- 13:21Speaker 4: it did, you sure as hell wouldn't film it and
- 13:23Speaker 4: show it to people like it's in their documentary.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Today it would be like, boom, you'd be done.
- 13:29Speaker 4: National news, like you'd be done.
- 13:31Speaker 3: The most heartbreaking thing about the octopus thing was like,
- 13:35Speaker 3: It wasn't like they just caught him and popped him
- 13:36Speaker 3: in the tank like his name was Charles. So he
- 13:39Speaker 3: had a name, and they're like, come on. Charles isn't cooperating.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Let's put a little. And who the fuck is like,
- 13:44Speaker 3: I know. Let's put bleach in his tank.
- 13:45Speaker 4: Let's pour some bleach in his eyes. I love that.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Yeah, and then they're like, and then he moved. Oh, Jesus.
- 13:52Speaker 4: Well, yeah, again, there was one of the other fish
- 13:54Speaker 4: that they kept cutting back to. And in the voiceover,
- 13:57Speaker 4: they named it. And then we're following around. And then
- 14:01Speaker 4: as we're making our smartest comments after the fact, and
- 14:03Speaker 4: then later we ate Tommy. I'm like, I'm sure they
- 14:06Speaker 4: did something horrible to that fish that they followed around
- 14:08Speaker 4: for two weeks.
- 14:09Speaker 3: Yeah, they dynamited his ass out of the water.
- 14:12Speaker 4: And here he is as they throw him up down
- 14:14Speaker 4: on the beach.
- 14:15Speaker 3: It's so weird. I can't watch movies like Cannibal Holocaust.
- 14:22Speaker 3: I just can't do it. Animal. Yeah. I can watch people.
- 14:26Speaker 4: Even when it's fake, it kind of bugs me. But
- 14:29Speaker 4: I can be like, it's okay. That was my easing
- 14:33Speaker 4: myself into John Wick. And I tell that to people
- 14:35Speaker 4: all the time now. I'm like, first of all, it's fake.
- 14:38Speaker 4: Second of all, it's necessary for that story to work. So, like,
- 14:41Speaker 4: hang in there and it all comes together. But, like, yeah,
- 14:44Speaker 4: even fake versions, I'm like, nah, fuck this movie.
- 14:47Speaker 3: And the thing with John Wick is, and I knew
- 14:49Speaker 3: that so many, my friend, I had never heard of that.
- 14:52Speaker 3: My friend Brian Quinn was, he recommended it. He was like, dude,
- 14:55Speaker 3: you gotta check this out. You'll really like it. So
- 14:57Speaker 3: much so that, like, when I didn't watch it right away,
- 14:59Speaker 3: he had me come over to his house and then
- 15:00Speaker 3: we watched it there.
- 15:01Speaker 4: Yo, we're watching this movie. Which, it kind of warrants that, like.
- 15:05Speaker 3: And you're right. Like, something bad happens to an animal
- 15:08Speaker 3: in the beginning, and you're like, ugh. Like you say, it's...
- 15:11Speaker 3: Fuck this movie. Yeah.
- 15:12Speaker 4: That's my initial knee-jerk reaction, but it fixes it as
- 15:17Speaker 4: much as you can in that story.
- 15:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:20Speaker 3: And John Wick kills, like, 9,000 people after that, and
- 15:23Speaker 3: you don't care about a one of them.
- 15:24Speaker 1: No.
- 15:25Speaker 4: It's like, it really is, like, it's so important to
- 15:27Speaker 4: that story, because number one, it gives him reason. Like, otherwise,
- 15:29Speaker 4: you're just like, who is this wingnut that just went
- 15:31Speaker 4: off and killed a bunch of people? But I'm like, no,
- 15:33Speaker 4: at that point, you're just... suckered into his life enough
- 15:36Speaker 4: to go nope that's it like you're just like the
- 15:39Speaker 4: door's thrown open let that killer out and like when
- 15:42Speaker 4: he starts just annihilating people it's just like alright thank
- 15:45Speaker 4: you you're making up for it you're making everything okay
- 15:47Speaker 4: so it really structures the story so perfectly that like
- 15:51Speaker 4: without that it doesn't work and it doesn't put you
- 15:54Speaker 4: on his side and you actually might feel for those
- 15:56Speaker 4: people but you don't care about any of those people after.
- 15:59Speaker 3: That yeah well the other thing about John Wick with
- 16:01Speaker 3: the you're just Maybe there's a certain mentality amongst assassins
- 16:08Speaker 3: that are like, I'm a better assassin than he is.
- 16:10Speaker 3: And I'll take on John Wick. Because who in their
- 16:13Speaker 3: right mind would take... Why don't you watch the movie?
- 16:16Speaker 3: You would have to be suicidal. You're like, there's no way.
- 16:20Speaker 3: There's no way I'm going to get him.
- 16:21Speaker 4: Yeah. Well, with any of these.
- 16:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:23Speaker 4: Any of those people that kind of work for the
- 16:25Speaker 4: organization but aren't obviously the high end of the team. So, yeah.
- 16:29Speaker 3: Which that.
- 16:30Speaker 4: Have you seen the second one? I did.
- 16:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:33Speaker 4: Again, that was the other really interesting thing. First of all,
- 16:36Speaker 4: it's well-structured as a story, but the little world that
- 16:40Speaker 4: they build in that, the fact that you have your
- 16:42Speaker 4: own set of rules and your own monetary system, basically,
- 16:46Speaker 4: and your own underground functioning system that takes care of
- 16:50Speaker 4: these professionals, that's pretty cool, and we just get kind
- 16:54Speaker 4: of a little window into it. And then, once again,
- 16:56Speaker 4: just kick open the door, because that's all that second
- 16:58Speaker 4: movie is. It's just like, okay, let's learn more about
- 17:01Speaker 4: that now and watch him kill a bunch of people again.
- 17:03Speaker 4: I still feel like the second one, it's got some
- 17:07Speaker 4: amazing kills to it, but without that structure. It just
- 17:10Speaker 4: feels a little more gratuitous of like, okay, we like that.
- 17:13Speaker 4: Let's watch him do it again for another hour and
- 17:15Speaker 4: a half.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Yeah, pretty much. It was kind of like if the
- 17:17Speaker 3: first one continued into a slightly different story arc and
- 17:21Speaker 3: you just watch Keanu Reeves blow it. Did you see the...
- 17:24Speaker 3: Somewhere on YouTube, it shows him training.
- 17:27Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 17:27Speaker 1: Where.
- 17:28Speaker 3: dedicated man oh my god it's so cool and that's that's.
- 17:31Speaker 4: Amazing because he's not a kid anymore so like the
- 17:34Speaker 4: fact that this far in on his life he's like
- 17:36Speaker 4: nah screw it i'm gonna i'm gonna pull a liam
- 17:39Speaker 4: neeson and decide to be an action dude not he
- 17:41Speaker 4: wasn't always kind of an action guy but like to
- 17:44Speaker 4: be like that hardcore action when you're that far into
- 17:46Speaker 4: your career it's just like ah screw it i'm gonna
- 17:49Speaker 4: be an action star.
- 17:50Speaker 3: So yeah it's no joke man that guy knows his stuff.
- 17:53Speaker 4: And like trains to specifically that's what one of the
- 17:56Speaker 4: guys on the show was talking about because he does
- 17:58Speaker 4: those like shooting runs and like Keanu does the real
- 18:01Speaker 4: version like the one that like professional Navy SEALs like
- 18:04Speaker 4: actually go through like so he learned the actual right
- 18:07Speaker 4: way to take care of a room and clear a
- 18:10Speaker 4: room and kill these people in the most efficient way
- 18:12Speaker 4: and like he really was kind of schooled on that
- 18:15Speaker 4: end of it too so it wasn't just like okay
- 18:17Speaker 4: with the Kung Fu end of it he also knew
- 18:19Speaker 4: how to like properly in like military style kill people
- 18:22Speaker 4: so I guess if you're going to kill that many people,
- 18:25Speaker 4: you better know how to do it right.
- 18:26Speaker 3: And the other thing about that is you have to
- 18:28Speaker 3: remember the whole time that you're watching it, he's getting
- 18:30Speaker 3: paid to do that. And you're like, God damn it.
- 18:32Speaker 4: I've done something wrong.
- 18:34Speaker 3: Yeah, why did I fall on Keanu Reeves' footsteps?
- 18:35Speaker 4: When I'm bagging groceries later, I'll remember I did something wrong.
- 18:39Speaker 3: Yeah, people's mothers blathering to me about how great their
- 18:41Speaker 3: kids are. I'm just like, oh, Christ.
- 18:43Speaker 4: Oh, God, is this that comic book guy again?
- 18:46Speaker 2: Yes, folks, it's intermission time. So how about taking a break,
- 18:50Speaker 2: get out and stretch a little, and relax before the
- 18:53Speaker 2: show begins again. And why not make it refreshment time, too?

- 19:01Speaker 2: at the refreshment center. There's hot popcorn, so golden good

- 21:26Speaker 4: trip next year. Alright, now that all that important information
- 21:29Speaker 4: has been passed along, let's get back to the flamethrowing
- 21:32Speaker 4: action with Brian. It's time for Sofa Theater.
- 21:37Speaker 1: In this house, 25 years ago, a child was given life.
- 21:42Speaker 2: Donald, come here.
- 21:44Speaker 1: He was raised in isolation.
- 21:45Speaker 4: You're a bad boy.
- 21:46Speaker 3: Instructed in fear.
- 21:48Speaker 5: You're evil and you must be punished.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Imprisoned by a tormented mind.
- 21:52Speaker 4: Your father let you do things like that, but he's
- 21:54Speaker 4: gone now.
- 21:56Speaker 1: And baptized in flames. Now he has come of age.
- 22:02Speaker 1: His suffering has ended, and ours is about to begin.
- 22:07Speaker 2: You hear that, old lady?
- 22:11Speaker 4: I'll punish you again!
- 22:12Speaker 1: If you would be spared from the fury of his vengeance,
- 22:17Speaker 1: whatever you do, don't go in the house. Stairway by stairway,
- 22:23Speaker 1: he draws you closer to madness.
- 22:27Speaker 4: Oh, God!
- 22:29Speaker 1: And soon he'll share the terrifying secret behind this door
- 22:35Speaker 1: in the room of steel.
- 22:39Speaker 3: Don't make me do anything bad, mother.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Don't go in the house because the people who live
- 22:45Speaker 1: there aren't people anymore.
- 22:50Speaker 5: Don't go in the house.
- 22:52Speaker 3: But if you do, don't say we didn't warn you.
- 23:09Speaker 4: I want you for my lover Oh, well, do we
- 23:47Speaker 4: want to roll into this week's movie?
- 23:48Speaker 3: Sure.
- 23:51Speaker 4: All right, so this week's Sofa Theater feature is Don't
- 23:53Speaker 4: Go in the House. This is the title we're going with.
- 23:56Speaker 4: The year is 1979. The director is Joseph Ellison, and
- 24:01Speaker 4: the plot, according to IMDb, which is always iffy, a
- 24:04Speaker 4: disturbed young man who was burned as a child by
- 24:06Speaker 4: his sadistic mother stalks women with a flamethrower. Kind of
- 24:10Speaker 4: skipping a few steps there, but, you know, spoiler alert.
- 24:13Speaker 4: That's where we're going from there. So you suggested this one,
- 24:18Speaker 4: and you say you've got a little backstory and a
- 24:20Speaker 4: couple of different avenues?
- 24:22Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, this was a movie that I didn't see
- 24:26Speaker 3: theatrically in 79. I saw it when it came out
- 24:31Speaker 3: on video a couple years later. It probably was like maybe...
- 24:37Speaker 3: somewhere around there, which would have made me... I don't know.
- 24:40Speaker 3: Let me see.
- 24:41Speaker 4: It's one of those I don't really.
- 24:43Speaker 3: I must have seen it earlier because I think maybe
- 24:44Speaker 3: I was like 14 when I saw it.
- 24:46Speaker 4: I don't really remember seeing it early on, but it
- 24:49Speaker 4: is one of those I knew the title. I'm sure
- 24:51Speaker 4: I knew the box. Again, just like loitering in video
- 24:53Speaker 4: stores the entirety of my life. Like most, especially horror
- 24:56Speaker 4: type stuff, I at least know the video covers. So
- 25:00Speaker 4: I've known about it for years. I don't remember if
- 25:02Speaker 4: I'd watched it at any point in between. Because most
- 25:05Speaker 4: of it was pretty fresh going in.
- 25:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I texted you. I started to re-watch it on
- 25:11Speaker 3: Amazon until I noticed that it was cut. There were
- 25:15Speaker 3: certain things.
- 25:15Speaker 4: I was trying to decide because I found two or
- 25:17Speaker 4: three different lengths on stuff. So I'm like, I'm just
- 25:20Speaker 4: going to pick one and go with it and then
- 25:22Speaker 4: see if you have a breakdown of what the differences
- 25:25Speaker 4: are anyway.
- 25:27Speaker 3: Yeah. So, I mean, the synopsis is pretty... Fairly accurate.
- 25:34Speaker 3: Like you say, it's missing a pretty decent... Skips a
- 25:36Speaker 3: good jump in the middle there. Yeah, a jump. This
- 25:39Speaker 3: story's about this guy, Donnie Kohler, who's played by Dan Grimaldi,
- 25:43Speaker 3: who then went on to play a whole bunch of stuff,
- 25:45Speaker 3: including Patsy Parisi in The Sopranos. And it's kind of,
- 25:52Speaker 3: you know, like a psycho ripoff almost.
- 25:55Speaker 4: It's definitely got that... I mean, it leans heavy on
- 25:58Speaker 4: the mother thing, which... almost every horror story. Like there's
- 26:02Speaker 4: so many now, which again is still kind of stealing
- 26:04Speaker 4: from real life. Cause that's the gain story. So they
- 26:07Speaker 4: all kind of stem from crazy at gain.
- 26:10Speaker 3: Yeah. And, and, and overbearing mothers who want to tell
- 26:14Speaker 3: clerks that you're like grocery clerks, you're on TV and shit,
- 26:17Speaker 3: you know, stuff like that.
- 26:18Speaker 4: We can't imagine something like that.
- 26:20Speaker 3: Um, so during the movie you get flashbacks of the mom, uh, Like,
- 26:29Speaker 3: it's trying to burn the evil out of him. Like,
- 26:31Speaker 3: she never came off as, like, a huge religious zealot
- 26:33Speaker 3: or anything. But she... Basically, she wanted to burn the
- 26:37Speaker 3: evil out of him. So she would, like, hold his
- 26:38Speaker 3: arms over this flame. Which, the way they do it,
- 26:42Speaker 3: you're like, no way. Like, you hold your hand over
- 26:45Speaker 3: a candle for, like, two seconds and you're like... Like,
- 26:49Speaker 3: this lady's, like, raking his arms back and forth and
- 26:52Speaker 3: back and forth over this gas burner on a stove.
- 26:54Speaker 4: To the point that she's lifting his feet off the ground. Yeah,
- 26:57Speaker 4: she's pulling up and over the stove. That's just going
- 26:58Speaker 4: to sear him directly onto it. Like, you can't levitate
- 27:01Speaker 4: in the air. Like, it's an odd structure of that
- 27:04Speaker 4: little thing that's going.
- 27:06Speaker 2: On.
- 27:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:07Speaker 3: So, I mean, I guess we talk about spoiler stuff.
- 27:10Speaker 4: I threw it out there. So, from here on out,
- 27:12Speaker 4: you're on your own.
- 27:14Speaker 3: So... at the beginning of the movie, finds him coming
- 27:18Speaker 3: home from a place. He works in some sort of.
- 27:22Speaker 3: He works around fire, which is.
- 27:24Speaker 4: Yeah, I never did figure out exactly what they're doing.
- 27:26Speaker 4: Which is weird. Or why you would throw a can
- 27:28Speaker 4: of spray paint in there.
- 27:29Speaker 3: Yeah, it looks like they're just shoveling stuff into this furnace,
- 27:32Speaker 3: and there's a spray paint can in there. And it
- 27:37Speaker 3: blows up. It catches some guy on fire, and... And
- 27:40Speaker 3: Donnie just is like watching. And it doesn't look like
- 27:43Speaker 3: he's like excited by it. It doesn't look like he's
- 27:46Speaker 3: upset about it.
- 27:47Speaker 4: Frozen.
- 27:47Speaker 3: Yeah, he's just kind of like watching. And this dude's
- 27:49Speaker 3: like jumping around with like engulfed in flames. And, you know,
- 27:55Speaker 3: they try to help. So a couple of the guys
- 27:58Speaker 3: try to help the dude who's burning up. And later
- 28:02Speaker 3: on in the locker room. I guess the foreman or something,
- 28:05Speaker 3: confronts Donnie and he's like.
- 28:07Speaker 4: I like that he really didn't even wait till then. Like,
- 28:09Speaker 4: he's still... The other guys are still kind of putting
- 28:11Speaker 4: him out and he's yelling at him. I'm like, could
- 28:13Speaker 4: you focus on the guy on fire for a minute
- 28:15Speaker 4: and then, like, you know, berate this idiot?
- 28:17Speaker 3: Yeah, true. Like, the guy's still smoldering.
- 28:19Speaker 4: He's like, what are you doing? I'm like, what are
- 28:21Speaker 4: you doing? There's a guy on fire.
- 28:23Speaker 3: Yeah, and not even, like... dude, you can't work here.
- 28:26Speaker 3: Like if people catch on fire and you just stand
- 28:28Speaker 3: there and do nothing, like, like we have to watch
- 28:30Speaker 3: each other's backs, but like, yeah, he doesn't, he doesn't
- 28:32Speaker 3: get fired, but he does have a friend who kind
- 28:34Speaker 3: of looks out for him. He's obviously done. He's very, um,
- 28:39Speaker 3: very like socially awkward to say the least. He, he
- 28:42Speaker 3: comes off as a real like odd misfit.
- 28:44Speaker 4: These days he's probably on the spectrum.
- 28:46Speaker 3: Right.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:47Speaker 3: Or he'd be at like the con like we are.
- 28:49Speaker 4: Or yeah. Or he'd turn it into his, his job.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:53Speaker 3: Um, so he goes home and he finds his mother, uh,
- 28:58Speaker 3: dead in her chair. And he, you know, and he
- 29:02Speaker 3: does that thing. I was like, mother, mother. Like I've
- 29:04Speaker 3: never called, I've never called my mother, mother. I like,
- 29:07Speaker 3: I called her like mom. I think probably mommy when
- 29:09Speaker 3: I was young, then mom, then ma. And then from
- 29:11Speaker 3: like 12 on, I called her Pam.
- 29:13Speaker 4: I think mine's just been mom forever. Like it's still
- 29:16Speaker 4: my mom. And like she was when I was a
- 29:18Speaker 4: kid and, I don't think I'm graduating up to mother,
- 29:21Speaker 4: which I guess means I'm not quite as psycho as
- 29:23Speaker 4: most people.
- 29:23Speaker 3: Think I am. Yeah, if you're, like, mother, you're either
- 29:26Speaker 3: from a different country or you're crazy.
- 29:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:28Speaker 4: Well, and in any, like, situation like this, it's always
- 29:31Speaker 4: funny when they're, like, just constantly saying it. Like, in
- 29:35Speaker 4: any household where you live with somebody, like, after once
- 29:37Speaker 4: or twice, you're not like, what the fuck?
- 29:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:40Speaker 4: Know or like where the hell have you gone like
- 29:42Speaker 4: just that they keep repeating it like they're going to
- 29:44Speaker 4: answer at some point and I'm like what it's just
- 29:47Speaker 4: it's always an odd scenario when someone's just walking around
- 29:49Speaker 4: like and it feels very unlike the real world yeah
- 29:53Speaker 4: mother of major T and nobody says anything like well
- 29:56Speaker 4: she's dead or this is a weird movie like Yeah.
- 30:01Speaker 3: So he's not upset by it. You know, I guess
- 30:05Speaker 3: he obviously lives with her. And the house that they
- 30:08Speaker 3: live in is a house in the next town over,
- 30:14Speaker 3: which I think is now like sort of a museum
- 30:16Speaker 3: or a historical. I'd love to see.
- 30:17Speaker 4: Yeah, they were going to like bulldoze it, I think.
- 30:20Speaker 4: And then the city bought it to turn it into
- 30:22Speaker 4: like a historical something about like. Not just the neighborhood history,
- 30:27Speaker 4: but also, like, I guess because of the style of
- 30:29Speaker 4: the house, it has, like, a Victorian museum that I
- 30:32Speaker 4: guess goes into, like, Victorian architecture stuff.
- 30:35Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a pretty cool house. And that, to me, like,
- 30:38Speaker 3: as a kid, like, when I was young, obviously, like,
- 30:42Speaker 3: there wasn't even... I mean, it was VHS, but I
- 30:44Speaker 3: think you had to be, like, super wealthy to have, like,
- 30:47Speaker 3: a VHS was, like, eight grand or something. It was, yeah.
- 30:50Speaker 4: It was a couple of years before the rest of
- 30:51Speaker 4: the country caught up with those handful of people that
- 30:54Speaker 4: had them the first few years.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:56Speaker 3: So, like, if you were on TV, it was a major,
- 31:00Speaker 3: major deal.
- 31:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 31:02Speaker 3: And I remember I went to the Statue of Liberty
- 31:04Speaker 3: with my grandmother once, and... for some reason, the news
- 31:08Speaker 3: was there. They were doing some sort of thing and
- 31:10Speaker 3: they were taking shots all over the place and one
- 31:12Speaker 3: of the people was like, oh, you might be on
- 31:13Speaker 3: the news tonight. And I was like, yeah. I was like,
- 31:16Speaker 3: oh my God, the news. Go tell the guy that
- 31:18Speaker 3: works at the grocery store. So when we got home,
- 31:24Speaker 3: we watched the channel and sure enough, at a certain
- 31:28Speaker 3: point now, you can't really see me. It's like, for
- 31:30Speaker 3: some reason, I was like, it was a ferry. We
- 31:32Speaker 3: were taking the ferry to Ellis Island and There's a
- 31:35Speaker 3: shot where you can see me looking out the door
- 31:39Speaker 3: of the ferry through this glass for like a millisecond.
- 31:43Speaker 3: But that millisecond, I was like, holy shit.
- 31:46Speaker 4: There I am. There I am.
- 31:47Speaker 3: I'm on TV. I wish I could recapture that and
- 31:52Speaker 3: care as much about being on TV now, but... Then
- 31:56Speaker 3: it was like, I was like, wow.
- 31:57Speaker 4: That planted the seed, though. Little did you know, you're like, I'm.
- 32:00Speaker 3: Gonna find a way, damn it. Yeah, it was training
- 32:03Speaker 3: for what I would eventually do. But the next best
- 32:08Speaker 3: thing was seeing things on TV that, like, you knew were, like,
- 32:12Speaker 3: around you, you know? Because I didn't know anybody on TV.
- 32:15Speaker 3: But I did know where that house was. And then
- 32:19Speaker 3: I'm like, oh, wait, that's Sandy Hook. And And now
- 32:24Speaker 3: when you watch it like the Gateway National Park, which
- 32:27Speaker 3: is like this recreation area like right by the ocean,
- 32:30Speaker 3: and there's a shot where some lady's car breaks down,
- 32:33Speaker 3: and it's just like two lanes. And it's kind of
- 32:37Speaker 3: cool to see it how it was then as opposed
- 32:41Speaker 3: to how it is now, which is like a goddamn superhighway. Yeah, exactly.
- 32:46Speaker 3: Or like that phone booth is right next to the Domino's,
- 32:49Speaker 3: but the phone booth isn't.
- 32:49Speaker 4: What's a phone booth?
- 32:51Speaker 3: Yeah, the phone booth isn't there anymore. I was, where
- 32:53Speaker 3: the hell was I? I was in, oh, I was
- 32:56Speaker 3: in LA like two weeks ago. And I walked by
- 32:59Speaker 3: and it wasn't a phone booth, but it was like
- 33:01Speaker 3: a paid phone. Yeah. And it was just jarring to
- 33:05Speaker 3: see it. I was like, I thought that these were
- 33:06Speaker 3: all turned into like Wi-Fi hotspots or just taken down. Yeah.
- 33:09Speaker 4: There's one that sits next to like a thrift shop
- 33:12Speaker 4: in town. And then it's like. The phone part has
- 33:15Speaker 4: been ripped out, but the little hood thing that sits
- 33:18Speaker 4: there that still says phone is there. And now I
- 33:20Speaker 4: think it's just novelty because now it's just graffitied to
- 33:23Speaker 4: hell and people put stickers all over it. So I
- 33:25Speaker 4: think it's like a monument to like, remember when these existed?
- 33:28Speaker 4: They still won't take it out. It just sits there.
- 33:31Speaker 4: And now it gets graffitied on a regular basis.
- 33:34Speaker 3: Yeah, people are like, let's just wreck this thing.
- 33:36Speaker 4: It's like, yeah, this was a historical thing. Let's put
- 33:39Speaker 4: shit all over it.
- 33:41Speaker 3: There's... Okay, so I'll go back for a second before
- 33:46Speaker 3: I name more places. So when Donnie finds out his
- 33:51Speaker 3: mother's dead, obviously he's not super close to her, even
- 33:56Speaker 3: though he did seem sort of subservient, like he was
- 33:59Speaker 3: bringing in, I think he was bringing her tea or whatever.
- 34:02Speaker 3: If you call your mother mother, yeah, you're bringing her tea.
- 34:04Speaker 3: You're bringing her tea. So he finds out she's dead,
- 34:08Speaker 3: and he's like, all right, well, now I can really
- 34:11Speaker 3: cut loose and do whatever I want.
- 34:14Speaker 4: Which is really funny when.
- 34:15Speaker 3: He does that. He's like, what, 30-some years old?
- 34:17Speaker 4: You would think, yeah.
- 34:18Speaker 3: Like, he doesn't look young. He starts to jump up
- 34:22Speaker 3: and down on a chair while playing his music. Crappy music.
- 34:25Speaker 4: Really loud.
- 34:26Speaker 3: Yeah, as loud as he wants.
- 34:27Speaker 4: Which is about up to a six, maybe. He doesn't
- 34:30Speaker 4: take it even up to ten. It's somewhere around six,
- 34:32Speaker 4: and he jumps on a chair. He is out of control.
- 34:37Speaker 3: So, yeah, so he's jumping up and down on the chair.
- 34:39Speaker 3: He's playing his music real loud, and he's like, hey, man,
- 34:41Speaker 3: I can do whatever I want. and what he wants
- 34:45Speaker 3: to do, I guess, is start to hunt down women.
- 34:50Speaker 4: Once again, even the story kind of skips a step,
- 34:53Speaker 4: because we never get anything of like, I guess it's
- 34:57Speaker 4: to have a reveal later, but at the same time,
- 34:58Speaker 4: I'm like, we never have any reason as to why,
- 35:02Speaker 4: number one, he just flips that switch and is crazy
- 35:05Speaker 4: immediately as soon as mom's dead, other than the weird
- 35:07Speaker 4: voices start talking to him, but We also don't see
- 35:09Speaker 4: any specific reason as to why this specific thing or
- 35:13Speaker 4: these specific, like, why specifically women other than maybe he's
- 35:17Speaker 4: a creepy perv. And then why specifically I want to
- 35:19Speaker 4: create a room in my house to burn people alive.
- 35:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:25Speaker 4: We never really get any of that.
- 35:27Speaker 3: You don't. Yeah. There's no backstory there really that gets
- 35:30Speaker 3: filled in.
- 35:31Speaker 1: But.
- 35:32Speaker 3: Unfortunately, it's always women.
- 35:35Speaker 4: Yeah, well, that part really didn't surprise me.
- 35:37Speaker 3: Crazy guy, hearing voices, who's got an issue with his mother.
- 35:40Speaker 3: If he's going to start killing people, it's like, if
- 35:43Speaker 3: you're a woman, you better look out.
- 35:44Speaker 4: And of course, he needs to strip them down first,
- 35:46Speaker 4: because why wouldn't he?
- 35:48Speaker 1: Right, yeah.
- 35:48Speaker 4: I'm pretty sure the fire will take care of their
- 35:50Speaker 4: clothes anyway if you're just going to kill them. But no, no,
- 35:52Speaker 4: first I need to strip her down.
- 35:54Speaker 3: Yeah, there's like a weird religious subtext where... that's not
- 35:58Speaker 3: even that buried that deeply where he's like, Oh, you know,
- 36:01Speaker 3: like the fire will cleanse the sin. And these girls
- 36:03Speaker 3: didn't even do anything. Like one lady like was nice
- 36:06Speaker 3: enough to sell them flowers after he's a major pain
- 36:10Speaker 3: in the ass. Yeah. Again, that florist was in Atlantic Highlands.
- 36:15Speaker 3: They got the same town that the town next to me,
- 36:18Speaker 3: the same town, the house is in. And, and when
- 36:21Speaker 3: I was rewatching, I was like, Again, it just pulled
- 36:25Speaker 3: up memories of the 70s where I was like, chicks
- 36:27Speaker 3: didn't wear bras that much. Oh, man, it was so awesome.
- 36:31Speaker 4: Yeah, these girls, some of these girls were all right.
- 36:33Speaker 3: Yeah, oh, they're very pretty, yeah. And he, like, herrings
- 36:37Speaker 3: her into selling him flowers for his mother, saying that
- 36:44Speaker 3: she was sick. And he's, like, then kind of, like,
- 36:46Speaker 3: creeping and stuff. while she's waiting for a borough bus
- 36:50Speaker 3: and these like young thug types or, I mean, not
- 36:53Speaker 3: even thugs.
- 36:53Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, they were like movie thugs, old timey
- 36:57Speaker 4: movie thugs when it's just like, Hey lady. And Oh God,
- 37:00Speaker 4: I'm in trouble.
- 37:01Speaker 3: They talk to me on the street, cat calling and stuff. And, uh,
- 37:07Speaker 3: she misses the bus. And then he's like, Hey, you
- 37:09Speaker 3: want to ride? And she's like a little reluctant. He's like, okay,
- 37:14Speaker 3: now I just got to stop off and drop these
- 37:16Speaker 3: flowers off to my mom because you know.
- 37:18Speaker 4: Because, you know, that's what you'll do when you.
- 37:21Speaker 3: After somebody does you a favor, it's like, look, I'm
- 37:24Speaker 3: going to inconvenience you further.
- 37:26Speaker 4: It's so like, so much of these old school horror
- 37:30Speaker 4: stories are just like the most basic rules, just like cemented.
- 37:34Speaker 4: It's like, you know what? Don't get into a car
- 37:35Speaker 4: with a weird, strange dude.
- 37:37Speaker 3: Right.
- 37:37Speaker 4: Like, once again, it's like every time, that's what one
- 37:40Speaker 4: of the times we were just like, talking about texas
- 37:42Speaker 4: chainsaw making like you know what don't go in someone
- 37:44Speaker 4: else's house because they kind of have license to chainsaw
- 37:48Speaker 4: you yeah don't just wander into a stranger's home they
- 37:52Speaker 4: were asking for it same thing here don't get into
- 37:54Speaker 4: this weird dude's car granted the street toughs aren't so
- 37:57Speaker 4: tough but they really i they at least gave a
- 37:59Speaker 4: little reason like if she was just you know standing
- 38:02Speaker 4: there it would have seemed a little weird i guess
- 38:04Speaker 4: that was their incentive is get away from these hooligans.
- 38:07Speaker 3: But yeah and then thinking back it's just like the
- 38:09Speaker 3: the poor woman can't win it's like so i either
- 38:11Speaker 3: take my chances with these four idiots yeah or the
- 38:14Speaker 3: one weirdo who's like.
- 38:16Speaker 4: Been who's already breaking my balls.
- 38:18Speaker 3: Yeah about flowers and all this other stuff but.
- 38:21Speaker 4: He's got a mother i have to feel sorry for.
- 38:24Speaker 3: Him yeah so so he brings her up and he's
- 38:26Speaker 3: like okay you can wait here and it's like such
- 38:28Speaker 3: a ruse such like a long con like in terms
- 38:31Speaker 3: of But it's not.
- 38:32Speaker 4: Even very good at it. I was like, can you
- 38:35Speaker 4: hand me that? Actually, why don't you do it? It
- 38:38Speaker 4: always felt, I'm like, any girl today, I would hope,
- 38:41Speaker 4: would just mace him immediately and move on.
- 38:43Speaker 3: Yeah, any girl in her right mind would be like,
- 38:45Speaker 3: first off, the way people are today, they would be like,
- 38:49Speaker 3: and I know if it was me, I'm working at
- 38:50Speaker 3: a florist, one minute I'm like, fuck you, fuck your mother,
- 38:53Speaker 3: I don't care.
- 38:54Speaker 4: That happened to me last night. No surprise, I went
- 38:58Speaker 4: to go get pancakes. I'm in the parking lot of
- 39:01Speaker 4: Cracker Barrel waiting to walk in the door. As soon
- 39:03Speaker 4: as I get out of the car, this SUV-looking thing
- 39:06Speaker 4: pulls up behind, rolls the window down, and says to, again,
- 39:10Speaker 4: he specifically singled out the girl of the group. I
- 39:12Speaker 4: was like, I need to ask you, don't get mad.
- 39:15Speaker 4: I'm like, okay, fuck this already. Whatever you're about to
- 39:18Speaker 4: say is bullshit or a scam or all of the above.
- 39:21Speaker 4: So I'm like, I don't even know. He also worked in,
- 39:25Speaker 4: I'm trying to, prove the validity of whatever this bullshit
- 39:28Speaker 4: he was saying. He's like, you can see in the
- 39:30Speaker 4: back of our car. I'm like, we're not getting in
- 39:31Speaker 4: the back of your van, you idiot. I'm like, this
- 39:33Speaker 4: is the signs of the lambs. Can you help me
- 39:35Speaker 4: move this carpet into the... I'm like, no, we're not
- 39:38Speaker 4: coming over to your van, you idiot. Like, so immediately,
- 39:42Speaker 4: it was like, nope, fuck you, move on. I don't
- 39:43Speaker 4: know what you want. I don't care.
- 39:44Speaker 3: Yeah, he's like, what size are you? This is not...
- 39:47Speaker 3: About a 14.
- 39:48Speaker 4: You don't... This is... Even if you were in trouble,
- 39:51Speaker 4: this is not the way you go about it. This
- 39:52Speaker 4: is shady.
- 39:53Speaker 3: Yeah, if you're in trouble... It's.
- 39:54Speaker 4: Funny that it's still going on even now.
- 39:57Speaker 3: You're asking for more trouble.
- 39:58Speaker 4: Yeah. I was like, this is just a weird shady situation.
- 40:01Speaker 4: Stay out of it. Which is immediately like, fuck you, buddy.
- 40:03Speaker 4: And we walked inside. So I'm like, that is not
- 40:06Speaker 4: the way you ask for help.
- 40:06Speaker 3: That's just creepy. So he gets this lady. Actually, we
- 40:11Speaker 3: should back it up a step because you mentioned it earlier.
- 40:13Speaker 3: He builds a room. Like he has a room in
- 40:15Speaker 3: the house that he's now taking like this sheet metal.
- 40:20Speaker 3: And it's everywhere. It's now a room made.
- 40:22Speaker 4: It just. Kind of haphazardly nailing it to the wall.
- 40:25Speaker 4: Does he have any real training to know that he's
- 40:27Speaker 4: doing this right? Did that come with his job that
- 40:30Speaker 4: we don't know what it is? I don't know, but
- 40:32Speaker 4: he did it.
- 40:32Speaker 3: And it looked good.
- 40:33Speaker 4: In the end, it looked pretty good. Yeah, whoever the
- 40:35Speaker 4: props guy were that actually built it, it looked pretty
- 40:37Speaker 4: good by the end.
- 40:38Speaker 3: And he had purchased a flamethrower and this suit. A suit. Like,
- 40:45Speaker 3: I guess it was.
- 40:46Speaker 4: Hazmat looking, but I guess it's like World War II. Well,
- 40:50Speaker 4: I think even World War I they started using flamethrowers, so...
- 40:53Speaker 4: Who knows how old the thing was.
- 40:54Speaker 3: And the hazmat suit is like, it looks like, I'm
- 40:56Speaker 3: assuming it's like asbestos or something. And that was pretty cool.
- 40:59Speaker 3: Like later on when they show it again, you can
- 41:02Speaker 3: see his eyes in it, which is not nearly as
- 41:05Speaker 3: creepy as when he walks into the room.
- 41:07Speaker 5: The face, yeah.
- 41:08Speaker 3: With this, whatever you would call it, the safety glove.
- 41:12Speaker 3: It's like a rectangle that he looks through. But by
- 41:15Speaker 3: this point, the woman has been told like, oh man,
- 41:19Speaker 3: my mom's sicker than I thought, you know? And this
- 41:22Speaker 3: lady's like, Jesus Christ almighty. So she comes in and
- 41:25Speaker 3: she uses the phone and then he somehow gets her
- 41:27Speaker 3: into the room.
- 41:30Speaker 4: Which again, how, well, no, eventually I think he at
- 41:32Speaker 4: least clubs her. That sort of makes, I think he,
- 41:34Speaker 4: he grabs, yeah, some knickknack and bangs her in the
- 41:38Speaker 4: head with it. So I'm like, if she just goes
- 41:39Speaker 4: willingly with him somewhere, she really is stupid.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 41:43Speaker 3: Now in the cut scene, in a cut version, which
- 41:46Speaker 3: on Amazon, and I don't know why they do this.
- 41:48Speaker 4: I mean, especially now, like when it was a video nasty,
- 41:51Speaker 4: I understand. Cause it was at one point, but like
- 41:54Speaker 4: in today's world for Amazon purposes, when you're on an
- 41:57Speaker 4: internet that has way more horrible things going on than
- 42:00Speaker 4: any movie you're ever going to watch. Yeah.
- 42:02Speaker 3: Like watch the news.
- 42:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 42:03Speaker 4: Why do you, why do you need that?
- 42:05Speaker 3: I don't know. And she's, chained her hands are bound
- 42:09Speaker 3: and she's chained to the ceiling and her legs were
- 42:13Speaker 3: in the real in the the uncovered her legs like
- 42:15Speaker 3: chained to the floor so she's kind of like in
- 42:17Speaker 3: this weird spread eagle yeah almost position just hanging there
- 42:23Speaker 3: and in her mind i'm sure she's like all right
- 42:25Speaker 3: i'm gonna get sexually.
- 42:26Speaker 4: Assaulted and again it's i don't know if it's worse
- 42:30Speaker 4: that he like he's so disturbed that doesn't occur to
- 42:33Speaker 4: him i guess not i guess it's just better to
- 42:35Speaker 4: kill her at that point yeah It's horrifying either way.
- 42:39Speaker 3: And she's tied up there naked and he kind of
- 42:43Speaker 3: kicks the door open and comes in in this weird outfit.
- 42:46Speaker 3: And that outfit was, again, the place where he got
- 42:49Speaker 3: that outfit was a place called RJ's. And it was like,
- 42:52Speaker 3: remember where the street toughs were? It was right down
- 42:55Speaker 3: the street from there. And I used to go there
- 42:58Speaker 3: with my grandfather all the time. And they had all
- 43:00Speaker 3: kinds of sporting stuff. The entire... uh, front counter was
- 43:04Speaker 3: nothing but handguns that like, they would like your kid
- 43:07Speaker 3: and they, of course they weren't loaded. So yeah, if
- 43:10Speaker 3: you're a kid and they weren't loaded, they'd be like, Hey,
- 43:11Speaker 3: you know, you could check it out. Like you could
- 43:13Speaker 3: handle it. It's crazy. Uh, so, so he bursts in
- 43:19Speaker 3: and he has a flamethrower and he like pops the
- 43:22Speaker 3: flame on and she's screaming, no, no. And then he
- 43:25Speaker 3: just torches her, like just burns her alive. And, uh,
- 43:30Speaker 3: You know, she's screaming. She's getting all charred up. And
- 43:32Speaker 3: when I was watching this on video, I remember it was,
- 43:35Speaker 3: like I said, I was probably 13, 14, somewhere in there.
- 43:39Speaker 3: It was late, and she's screaming like crazy, and it
- 43:42Speaker 3: woke my father up. And he comes out, and he's like,
- 43:45Speaker 3: he goes, turn this shit off. And I was so
- 43:49Speaker 3: mad that I'm like, and like in retrospect, it is
- 43:52Speaker 3: kind of like, what is this?
- 43:54Speaker 4: Yeah, why is my child watching this anyway?
- 43:57Speaker 3: Yeah, because I already watched all the faces of death. Dad.
- 44:00Speaker 4: You're going to turn out just like that weirdo.
- 44:02Speaker 3: Turn that off. Yeah, I already watched Jacques Cousteau torture
- 44:05Speaker 3: Charles' dad.
- 44:06Speaker 4: Yeah, Jacques Cousteau is what sends us all over the edge.
- 44:08Speaker 4: That's what we've realized.
- 44:09Speaker 3: That's where it started. So he's super pissed, and he's like,
- 44:14Speaker 3: shut that off. So I'm like, all right, I shut
- 44:16Speaker 3: it off, and I wait until he goes to bed.
- 44:17Speaker 3: And then, you know, you turn it right back on.
- 44:19Speaker 3: I turn him down a little bit more. Ah, kid behavior. Yeah. Now,
- 44:25Speaker 3: so Donnie has this friend. What was his name? Do
- 44:27Speaker 3: you remember his friend's name?
- 44:29Speaker 4: No he was he's so the best friend in any
- 44:32Speaker 4: movie he's just yeah he really like hey man how's
- 44:35Speaker 4: it going yeah.
- 44:36Speaker 3: He was like typical 70s like swinger type guy he's
- 44:40Speaker 3: a bro he had.
- 44:41Speaker 4: A wife and kids he's a 70s bro yeah.
- 44:43Speaker 3: He's like a wife and kids and hanging out at
- 44:46Speaker 3: the bars all night and they had to sort of
- 44:48Speaker 3: put his wife like hand packing his ass so that
- 44:51Speaker 3: it's like well that's a good enough reason to step
- 44:53Speaker 3: out on her yeah you should.
- 44:53Speaker 4: Go screw around with these random girls at a disco club.
- 44:56Speaker 3: Yeah and um So he invites Donnie out. And you
- 45:02Speaker 3: can tell, I did think that one nice little touch
- 45:04Speaker 3: was like, he asked Donnie, he was like, hey, you
- 45:07Speaker 3: want to go get a cup of coffee or something
- 45:09Speaker 3: like that?
- 45:10Speaker 4: He's pretty nurturing for a dude in the 70s, you know?
- 45:13Speaker 4: The fact that both times he's like, do you just
- 45:15Speaker 4: want to talk? And I'm like, it's probably not the
- 45:17Speaker 4: way most dudes would have been in the 70s. Be like, dude,
- 45:19Speaker 4: get over it.
- 45:20Speaker 3: But I think Donnie was not a 70s guy because
- 45:22Speaker 3: he's like, hey, you want to go out for a coffee?
- 45:24Speaker 3: And he's like, why? It doesn't occur to him.
- 45:27Speaker 4: Once again, he's a little on the spectrum, I think.
- 45:29Speaker 4: He doesn't understand social interactions.
- 45:30Speaker 3: Yeah, like why would we interact socially? We work together.
- 45:33Speaker 3: We watch guys get burned up by paint cans together.
- 45:36Speaker 4: Mike, want to deal with some of this? No, I'll
- 45:38Speaker 4: just go talk to my dead mother.
- 45:40Speaker 3: It's fine. Yeah, she's got the answers. I mean, it's
- 45:43Speaker 3: whispered in a weird, creepy voice, but she's got the answers.
- 45:46Speaker 3: So the guy is bent on socializing Donnie.
- 45:51Speaker 4: I don't even know why. Like at one point he's
- 45:53Speaker 4: such a dick to him. He does finally get to
- 45:56Speaker 4: that point of like almost being like, fine, then screw you.
- 45:58Speaker 4: And then he backtracks and it's like still becomes like
- 46:01Speaker 4: his best friend. It's like, I'm not sure why Donnie's
- 46:03Speaker 4: kind of a jerk. Yeah.
- 46:04Speaker 3: And he's trying to, yeah, he's trying to get Donnie laid.
- 46:06Speaker 3: He's like, I've got, now this is a, this is
- 46:09Speaker 3: this guy's like, it's, I wish I could remember his name,
- 46:13Speaker 3: but it's a huge misplay on his end because you're like,
- 46:15Speaker 3: I got these two hot numbers lined up, which is
- 46:18Speaker 3: really relative when you see the hot numbers. Uh, And
- 46:22Speaker 3: you're like, I'm going to bring my super socially awkward,
- 46:26Speaker 3: couldn't get laid if he tried.
- 46:28Speaker 4: It's just a bad plan on his part, really.
- 46:30Speaker 3: It's like if this dude's that cool, he must have
- 46:36Speaker 3: another friend that he can bring. Smooth friends. Yeah, one
- 46:38Speaker 3: that he doesn't have to worry is going to do
- 46:41Speaker 3: something outlandish or crazy.
- 46:43Speaker 4: Like throw fire at a woman.
- 46:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 46:46Speaker 4: Oops, jumping ahead.
- 46:47Speaker 1: Yeah, right.
- 46:48Speaker 3: So actually before that, I also like the– There's a
- 46:52Speaker 3: scene where Donnie doesn't have any disco clothes, so he
- 46:58Speaker 3: has to go to some shop.
- 47:00Speaker 4: We all have our disco clothes.
- 47:03Speaker 3: I never noticed it before how many goddamn shirts were
- 47:07Speaker 3: in this store. There are thousands of shirts. Now, what's
- 47:11Speaker 3: that store down the street from? Now, that store was
- 47:15Speaker 3: in New York. I saw the.
- 47:20Speaker 3: Locations list there's like a new rochelle or something but
- 47:23Speaker 3: it's like a 70s dude who comes off as like
- 47:26Speaker 3: real effeminate and fey and shit and i thought like
- 47:30Speaker 3: he i thought like originally i was like i thought
- 47:33Speaker 3: he's gonna like hit on him or something but he
- 47:34Speaker 3: didn't he was just like a stylish gay dude who
- 47:38Speaker 3: was like one of my favorite lines in the whole
- 47:40Speaker 3: uh movie is like i'm paraphrasing something I'm so tired,
- 47:44Speaker 3: but he's just like, like, how about you let me
- 47:47Speaker 3: set you up with a whole ensemble? Oh, it made
- 47:52Speaker 3: me laugh. You're like, Donnie has no idea like.
- 47:54Speaker 5: What to do.
- 47:55Speaker 3: Ben?
- 47:56Speaker 1: Probably.
- 47:56Speaker 4: It's like the next guy.
- 47:57Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. Um, so he gets set up with his
- 48:01Speaker 3: ensemble and he goes to, uh, he goes to the
- 48:05Speaker 3: disco with, we'll say Ben, assuming that's his name. And they, uh,
- 48:11Speaker 3: You know, Ben's dancing, he's cutting the rug, they're disco dancing,
- 48:15Speaker 3: and Donnie's like, yeah, well, I don't dance, you know,
- 48:18Speaker 3: wallflower type shit, which you totally expect.
- 48:20Speaker 4: Yeah, he can't even, like, sit down and have coffee.
- 48:22Speaker 4: How is he going to go dance with people?
- 48:24Speaker 3: Yeah, and the girls are portrayed as very typical, like, bimbo-ish. Like,
- 48:29Speaker 3: they don't give a shit who he is, what he
- 48:31Speaker 3: looks like. She's like, hey, let's party, man.
- 48:33Speaker 4: I don't think that works anywhere in the world. Not
- 48:35Speaker 4: that I've run into.
- 48:36Speaker 3: Not in my experience, yeah. Where he's like, who cares
- 48:40Speaker 3: what you look like?
- 48:41Speaker 4: I'm a weird Donnie dude, and this doesn't happen to
- 48:43Speaker 4: me on any regular basis.
- 48:46Speaker 3: So she's trying to coax him into dancing, and he
- 48:53Speaker 3: doesn't want to dance. And she grabs his hands, and
- 48:56Speaker 3: she's trying to, again, very awkwardly, pull him over this railing.
- 49:01Speaker 4: Again, mimicking the other equally awkward scenario.
- 49:05Speaker 3: Yeah. It's like, what do you think you're doing? You're
- 49:09Speaker 3: not pulling him towards anything. Because the dance floor is
- 49:12Speaker 3: down here, and then where he's sitting at this table
- 49:15Speaker 3: is sort of elevated. So it's like, how do.
- 49:17Speaker 4: You hope to pull him over the rail?
- 49:19Speaker 3: Drag him over the table.
- 49:19Speaker 4: Come on. on that's the way to start a nice relationship.
- 49:22Speaker 3: And there's a candle on the table and that i
- 49:24Speaker 3: guess you know kicks the flashback in and so she's
- 49:27Speaker 3: pulling back and forth back and forth and he's having
- 49:30Speaker 3: flashbacks and then he suddenly freaks and takes the candle
- 49:35Speaker 3: and like she said Doesn't really so much throw it
- 49:37Speaker 3: as jam it into her head and boom, her hair.
- 49:41Speaker 3: And I would believe this.
- 49:41Speaker 4: I was going to say, that at least made sense
- 49:43Speaker 4: because she had a lot of hair. And I'm assuming, 1979,
- 49:46Speaker 4: she used probably an ozone-killing Aquanet.
- 49:50Speaker 3: Aquanet. It was 100% Aquanet.
- 49:51Speaker 4: It was lacquered onto that shit.
- 49:55Speaker 3: And so her hair goes up in flames. She's running around,
- 49:59Speaker 3: and the guy, Benny, comes over. He's like, what the
- 50:02Speaker 3: hell's wrong with you, man? Why'd you do that, man?
- 50:05Speaker 3: As if it was like he did something sort of minor.
- 50:09Speaker 4: Like, why'd you throw a drink on her?
- 50:11Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 50:11Speaker 4: Not why'd you set her head on fire.
- 50:13Speaker 3: Yeah, why'd you immolate her?
- 50:17Speaker 4: Don't make me get her ascot-wearing brother over here.
- 50:20Speaker 3: Yeah, and somebody goes over to rat out Donnie, and
- 50:22Speaker 3: it's like, It was obviously put in later. I hope
- 50:26Speaker 3: so because the delivery is so awful. But it's like, Vito, Vito,
- 50:30Speaker 3: your sister, somebody just set her on fire. Like that
- 50:35Speaker 3: guy right there. And again, like a weird sort of
- 50:39Speaker 3: reaction to, like assuming that you're at the club with
- 50:42Speaker 3: your sister, you have a good relationship with her. Her
- 50:44Speaker 3: hair is now on fire. Some weird guy did it.
- 50:47Speaker 3: And instead of being like, hey, somebody get that guy.
- 50:50Speaker 3: he chooses to chase him into a parking garage where
- 50:54Speaker 3: Donnie is very casually strolling out like after just lighting
- 50:58Speaker 3: someone on fire.
- 50:59Speaker 4: Which again at least solidifies the fact that he doesn't
- 51:01Speaker 4: even understand the circumstances of life like you would at
- 51:04Speaker 4: least have sense enough to run if you just did
- 51:06Speaker 4: that if you were like a somewhat normal person who
- 51:09Speaker 4: kills people but like he's so disconnected that like he
- 51:13Speaker 4: doesn't even realize he's probably in trouble now like again
- 51:15Speaker 4: I think There's something really off about Donnie's mental state, obviously.
- 51:20Speaker 3: He kills women.
- 51:20Speaker 4: But that's... I mean, even on the most basic level,
- 51:23Speaker 4: he doesn't even understand enough to run away after he
- 51:25Speaker 4: does shit.
- 51:26Speaker 3: Yeah, like, she's not going to come after me.
- 51:29Speaker 4: But a whole room full of people just saw you
- 51:31Speaker 4: do this.
- 51:31Speaker 3: There's going to be a bunch of guys that are
- 51:33Speaker 3: going to be very unhappy with what I just did.
- 51:35Speaker 4: I do like that he full-on tackles him in the
- 51:37Speaker 4: parking lot, which I'm like, that's pretty genuine. Because, like,
- 51:40Speaker 4: that's what you're going to do.
- 51:41Speaker 3: At that point. Yeah, he tackles him. And then, yeah,
- 51:45Speaker 3: but somehow... Donnie gets away like he bests Vito and
- 51:51Speaker 3: takes off. And I think it was then Ben calls
- 51:57Speaker 3: him the next day, almost like, hey, man, why'd you
- 52:01Speaker 3: throw the drink on that girl? And then Donnie's like,
- 52:04Speaker 3: basically he quit, right? He's like, yeah, I'm not going
- 52:07Speaker 3: to work there anymore. I'm not coming in anymore.
- 52:12Speaker 4: How do you like it there?
- 52:16Speaker 3: It stinks.
- 52:16Speaker 2: Yeah, well, you ain't gonna have to worry about that
- 52:22Speaker 2: if you don't show up for work on Monday. Why?
- 52:24Speaker 4: Are they gonna fire you?
- 52:27Speaker 2: You're damn right.
- 52:28Speaker 3: I'll be there.
- 52:29Speaker 2: I'm coming back Monday.
- 52:30Speaker 4: I hope so.
- 52:31Speaker 2: Come on, let's dance.
- 52:33Speaker 4: I've heard enough of this rubbish. So, you've been missing
- 52:37Speaker 4: work lately, huh?
- 52:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I've been sick. I mean I'd like to know
- 52:53Speaker 1: beforehand no.
- 52:55Speaker 4: It's it's nothing like that I'm over it now anyway
- 53:02Speaker 4: before we go too far from the club I just
- 53:04Speaker 4: want to say the most horrifying thing wasn't her hair
- 53:07Speaker 4: setting on fire it was the dancing at one point
- 53:11Speaker 4: one of the girls the hot girls in question is
- 53:13Speaker 4: doing finger pistols. I swear to God. I'm sitting there going, no,
- 53:18Speaker 4: she's not seriously. No, she was. She's like, I know
- 53:22Speaker 4: it's disco era, but they are the whitest bunch of
- 53:25Speaker 4: losers I've ever seen trying to dance. And the finger
- 53:28Speaker 4: pistols were over the top. I'm like, if she starts
- 53:30Speaker 4: doing the Elaine kicks and thumbs, we're right on board. Like,
- 53:33Speaker 4: now I see. Yeah, that was way a nice little
- 53:37Speaker 4: window into the 1979 era that we were living in.
- 53:41Speaker 3: Yeah, there are many things in that movie that are
- 53:43Speaker 3: definitely a snapshot of the time. It's kind of cool.
- 53:46Speaker 3: That dancing.
- 53:47Speaker 4: And, again, the dude's, like, weird scarf ascot thing. It
- 53:51Speaker 4: was kind of both. It was, like, I guess sort
- 53:54Speaker 4: of a scarf, but he then wrapped it around, like, twice,
- 53:57Speaker 4: like trying to be sort of an ascot. I don't
- 53:59Speaker 4: know what he was doing, but it was an odd
- 54:01Speaker 4: look for him, too.
- 54:02Speaker 3: It was a strange... Yeah, like, nobody set him up with, like,
- 54:04Speaker 3: a great ensemble.
- 54:04Speaker 4: He didn't have an ensemble. He needed that dude that
- 54:07Speaker 4: worked at that shop.
- 54:08Speaker 1: Now.
- 54:09Speaker 3: At this point, I think Donnie, I can't remember if he,
- 54:13Speaker 3: because at a certain point he goes to a priest.
- 54:15Speaker 4: I feel like it's almost the same night all this happens. Like,
- 54:19Speaker 4: because then it's like he doesn't even go home before
- 54:22Speaker 4: he starts trying to get more girls to kill. Like,
- 54:24Speaker 4: he's still driving in the car with his blood coming
- 54:26Speaker 4: out of his face from Vito beating his ass. And
- 54:29Speaker 4: then those random girls stumble out of another bar and
- 54:32Speaker 4: are like trying to flag down a ride. And they
- 54:34Speaker 4: just get in the car. I'm like, oh, you've had
- 54:36Speaker 4: a hell of a night because he's still bleeding from
- 54:38Speaker 4: the last woman he set on fire.
- 54:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 54:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 54:40Speaker 3: They're like, what happened? And he's like, he starts like lying,
- 54:43Speaker 3: saying Marines attacked him or something. He needs to kick
- 54:45Speaker 3: all their asses.
- 54:46Speaker 4: Again, you also get this little weird window. That was
- 54:49Speaker 4: kind of one of my favorite things about it is
- 54:51Speaker 4: the fact that he keeps the girls and then like
- 54:54Speaker 4: talks to them. Like, again, there's not any very specific
- 54:57Speaker 4: religious tone to it. But it is almost like him, like,
- 55:00Speaker 4: his sermon. Like, he's building his little congregation of women here. And, like,
- 55:04Speaker 4: he gets and, like, starts telling them about things and, like,
- 55:07Speaker 4: explaining things. And he always, like, changes his perspective so that, like, yeah,
- 55:11Speaker 4: I told that boss that he can shove it. And, like,
- 55:14Speaker 4: he's telling off his boss in his dumb story that's
- 55:17Speaker 4: made up. Or same thing when he gets to these girls.
- 55:19Speaker 4: It's like all of a sudden he's like, yeah, these
- 55:21Speaker 4: three toughs jumped me in a parking lot and I
- 55:23Speaker 4: kicked all their asses. And I'm like, so he's got
- 55:25Speaker 4: this weird fantasy world where he is a tough guy.
- 55:29Speaker 4: But he's obviously not. Like, he doesn't even know how
- 55:31Speaker 4: to be a tough guy. He just freezes when these
- 55:33Speaker 4: guys talk to him. But in his mind, he still
- 55:36Speaker 4: has this fantasy world where he's, like, super macho and, like,
- 55:40Speaker 4: kicks everybody's ass.
- 55:41Speaker 3: Yeah, it's his approximation of what a tough guy is, like,
- 55:44Speaker 3: in his mind.
- 55:44Speaker 4: Yeah, just, again, kind of off.
- 55:45Speaker 3: And that place that those girls came out of, it
- 55:47Speaker 3: was a bar called The Web, which was right, like,
- 55:51Speaker 3: right around the block from where, like, that's the main highway.
- 55:54Speaker 3: And then I lived at, like, a block off of
- 55:56Speaker 3: that on, like, a regular side road.
- 55:57Speaker 4: Like, that far back it was called The Web?
- 55:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 55:59Speaker 4: So it was just a spider web reference since there
- 56:01Speaker 4: was nothing else?
- 56:02Speaker 3: I don't know. I do know it was.
- 56:03Speaker 4: Now that would be an internet bar, I suppose. Yeah, right.
- 56:06Speaker 3: It was one of those places that it had a
- 56:09Speaker 3: video game in it. There were certain bars in town.
- 56:13Speaker 4: Oh, a video game.
- 56:13Speaker 3: Holy shit. Yeah.
- 56:15Speaker 4: That was a big deal back in the day.
- 56:16Speaker 3: Yeah, there were certain bars in town that had video games,
- 56:19Speaker 3: and they didn't care if you came in and played.
- 56:21Speaker 3: Like me and Walt, my friend, we would go to
- 56:23Speaker 3: this place called The Pump House, which sounds like a
- 56:25Speaker 3: strip club. But it was just this, like, last stop, like,
- 56:31Speaker 3: bar for alcoholics that were, like, I don't care anymore.
- 56:36Speaker 3: And they had a couple of video games or two.
- 56:38Speaker 3: It started about 11 o'clock. Yeah, right? Yeah, and you
- 56:40Speaker 3: would just go in and play video games. And no
- 56:42Speaker 3: one was like, you're 12 years old. You're 13 years old.
- 56:45Speaker 4: Why are you playing Asteroids right now?
- 56:47Speaker 3: Yeah, nobody was like, get out.
- 56:49Speaker 4: I put my quarter on the machine.
- 56:51Speaker 2: Shut up.
- 56:51Speaker 4: I'm next.
- 56:52Speaker 3: Yeah, right? Yeah, today's kids will never know the joy
- 56:54Speaker 3: of putting the quarter up. They never understand. So, and
- 56:57Speaker 3: the girls are ready to party. They get into the
- 57:01Speaker 3: car with, and that was big in the 70s too,
- 57:04Speaker 3: like hitchhiking and stuff.
- 57:06Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess. And obviously not concerned about the open
- 57:10Speaker 4: container of alcohol. They stumble out of the bar with
- 57:12Speaker 4: a beer that I guess is full because they spend
- 57:15Speaker 4: the entire time they're standing on the street corner both
- 57:18Speaker 4: drinking out of it. Then they get in the car.
- 57:20Speaker 4: They're still both drinking. I'm like, how full was this beer?
- 57:23Speaker 4: You're both drinking out of one can for like 10,
- 57:26Speaker 4: 15 minutes.
- 57:27Speaker 3: And then he says he has more beer, right? He
- 57:28Speaker 3: claims he has more beer.
- 57:29Speaker 4: Or they're going to go get some to have this party,
- 57:31Speaker 4: in quotes.
- 57:32Speaker 3: Yeah, his is on house, and they're going to have
- 57:34Speaker 3: a party.
- 57:35Speaker 4: If you don't count that dead mother, this is totally
- 57:37Speaker 4: my house.
- 57:37Speaker 3: Yeah, right?
- 57:39Speaker 4: I guess it got willed to me.
- 57:40Speaker 3: She has her own room. Leave her alone. So they
- 57:43Speaker 3: go back to the house, and they start to party, right? Yeah.
- 57:50Speaker 3: One of them ends up.
- 57:52Speaker 4: He, like, lures one away from the other.
- 57:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 57:54Speaker 4: Like, they're just... Once again, I hope it's drunk and
- 57:58Speaker 4: not just stupid, because they're just fascinated by everything in
- 58:01Speaker 4: his home, which a few things, like, there is, like,
- 58:03Speaker 4: a weird gargoyle-looking thing. I'm like, all right, for normal people,
- 58:06Speaker 4: that's pretty weird. I mean, most people that go to conventions,
- 58:08Speaker 4: that's normal. But for regular people, that would be weird.
- 58:10Speaker 4: But one, like, she's like... what's this? I'm like, it's
- 58:13Speaker 4: an umbrella stand, you loser. She's just fascinated by this
- 58:17Speaker 4: brass umbrella stand.
- 58:19Speaker 3: Yeah, well, I mean, it wasn't so many, who knows
- 58:21Speaker 3: what else she was on where she's like, oh man,
- 58:23Speaker 3: look at this umbrella stand. It's beautiful, man.
- 58:26Speaker 4: Dude, look at this shiny umbrella stand. I just thought
- 58:30Speaker 4: that was funny that like everything, whoa, look at that.
- 58:33Speaker 4: And I'm like, it's a coat, calm down.
- 58:35Speaker 3: Yeah, right. So now, it's slipping my mind. I think
- 58:39Speaker 3: he did burn up Did he burn one.
- 58:41Speaker 4: Of them too? He had Bolton, well, at first he
- 58:44Speaker 4: lures the one off to the room and then I
- 58:47Speaker 4: think the other one comes looking for her and then
- 58:49Speaker 4: finds her like passed out or knocked out, I'm assuming.
- 58:52Speaker 4: He probably once again drug her off there and knocked
- 58:54Speaker 4: her out. So she's sort of like laying on the
- 58:56Speaker 4: floor in the room and then she comes in and
- 58:59Speaker 4: I think he comes in behind her and like gets
- 59:00Speaker 4: them both in there and I believe torches them.
- 59:03Speaker 3: Right, yeah. It was all about, yeah, like flame throwing
- 59:06Speaker 3: naked girls and it is like a weird thing when
- 59:10Speaker 3: you think about it and in today's society where and
- 59:14Speaker 3: maybe this is why amazon cut it because like there
- 59:18Speaker 3: was no part of me that was like that normalized
- 59:21Speaker 3: it like well you know he's.
- 59:23Speaker 4: Got his reasons yeah Like John Wickett, nope, they pissed
- 59:27Speaker 4: him off and those girls needed to die.
- 59:30Speaker 3: Yeah, it's kind of like the very... Because you become desensitized.
- 59:35Speaker 3: There was so much weird shit back then. So as ADJ,
- 59:37Speaker 3: you become desensitized.
- 59:38Speaker 4: I mean, you watch all those movies on VHS, which
- 59:41Speaker 4: I'm assuming we both did. And I'm like, after a while,
- 59:43Speaker 4: it doesn't even register. Like, yeah, this is a little off.
- 59:46Speaker 4: This guy's a little weird.
- 59:48Speaker 3: Or you get to the point where it's kind of boring. Like, what,
- 59:50Speaker 3: he's just going to torch another lady?
- 59:52Speaker 4: And I think that's when you start to... the whole
- 59:55Speaker 4: gore hound thing is born. It's like at that point,
- 59:57Speaker 4: you're so desensitized, you don't care about the story anymore.
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: You're like, what weird effects are they going to do?
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: Like what weird practical thing can they melt and make
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: blood come out of? And like, I think you, that's
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: where you get to that era in like the mid
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: eighties where like, let's just up the ante. Like let's
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: make the most weird fucked up thing we can make.
- 1:00:13Speaker 4: And then guys were just like salivating over it. So
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: I think that kind of came out of that too,
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: is we'd already started seeing so many like slashers and
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: weird VHS horror movies. That we did desensitize ourselves just
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: enough to be like, what else can we focus on?
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: How about just the effects? Who cares about the story?
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: So I think that's.
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: Part of it. Yeah, there's so many clones of clones
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: of clones that started coming out.
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: That's what I started looking up in the middle of this.
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: I just remembered, well, actually, as I was watching, I
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: was like, this to me falls right into that Exterminator vibe.
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: Did you watch either of the Exterminator movies?
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I saw the first one.
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: Yeah, because my favorite logo that I've used is the
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: second one. That artwork on the VHS for Exterminator 2
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: is one of the greatest things you'll ever see in life.
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: So if you haven't seen it, you and everyone listening,
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: go find it. It's awesome. And it's on my logos
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: half the time. But again, the second one's different than
- 1:01:05Speaker 4: the first one. The first one's a little more grounded as, again,
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: sort of trying to tell a real story. Like that
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: guy comes back from Vietnam and he's kind of messed up.
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: And I think it's a little more death wish of
- 1:01:15Speaker 4: trying to actually take out the bad guys. The second
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: one is just insanity. Once again, they got the extra budget,
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: I think, to just do whatever the hell they wanted.
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: And it makes no sense. But it, once again, it's
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: this something about the weird 80s blowtorch thing, because the
- 1:01:29Speaker 4: guy gets a blowtorch to take out the bad guys,
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: because that's the most practical way to do it.
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: So, and by the second one he had, because I
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: think the first one he just has like a motorcycle helmet,
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: but by the second one he has a full-on suit
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: that looks almost exactly.
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: Like that guy's. Yeah, you know, I do remember the color.
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: Yeah, so I was kind of like, that's why I
- 1:01:45Speaker 4: was looking up, I was like, which one was first?
- 1:01:47Speaker 4: And I think the first Exterminator's 80, and I think
- 1:01:50Speaker 4: it's like 82 or so for that second one, so. Again,
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: this one predates it, but you do see that weird
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: 80s thing of, like, not only these weird horror movies,
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: but also even, like, a weird blowtorch fetish. And then, like,
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: that suit that he's wearing. So all of that starts
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: getting kind of mimicked, even in what seems like such
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: a weird little pigeonhole kind of thing that you'd think
- 1:02:09Speaker 4: only one movie would do that. But there's three in
- 1:02:12Speaker 4: a row in, like, a couple of years there.
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: So I think that's actually... I think it's actually at
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: that point where Donnie quits, right? Because... Ben calls him
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: and then he's... I.
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: Think it was right before that. Maybe that was the...
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: I think that was it. I think it was the
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: same phone call. I think the first part was when
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: he started being a dick and he said he wasn't
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: going to work there anymore. And he was like, fine,
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: I'm just trying to help you. Screw you then. And
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: he almost hangs up on him. And he's like, well, no,
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: my mom's sick. And so then he feels bad for
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: him and I think he starts going, okay, well, I've
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: got these girls and we want to hang out tonight.
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: So I think that's all one big thing that happens
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: where he quits, more or less. He almost pisses him
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: off and then he comes back around and he's his
- 1:02:48Speaker 4: best friend again.
- 1:02:49Speaker 5: So.
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: Yeah, but then I guess Ben's worried enough for him. Like,
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: he cares so much more about Donnie than his own family.
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: He has a wife and two kids.
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: He doesn't give a shit about any of them.
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: Yeah, all he's doing is trying to get away from
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: them so he can hang out with this wacko. So
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: he goes to a priest, and he starts telling the priest, like, hey, man,
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: I think my... Friend is in trouble.
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: I think he mentioned him earlier that he was like, oh,
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: the priest is coming over because my mom's sick or something.
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: And he knew, at least Donnie knew, or the other
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: guy knew. He was like, oh, yeah, that guy. What's
- 1:03:20Speaker 4: he coming over for? So at least he knew that
- 1:03:22Speaker 4: he knew the situation with him and his mother or
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: something like that. So it made a little.
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I think his mother was... Well, I mean, obviously
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: his mother was religious at one time.
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: I guess.
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: Real religious. So maybe that was the church he went to.
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: The guy must have known his mother or whatever. The priest...
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: And so then the priest shows up, right?
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: Yeah, well, the other friend, eventually, after the burning the
- 1:03:45Speaker 4: woman incident, goes to, I guess, goes to, like, the
- 1:03:48Speaker 4: rectory or whatever and is, like, banging on the door
- 1:03:50Speaker 4: and is, like, come help him, which, again, is a
- 1:03:52Speaker 4: very odd, like, The way that he yells at the
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: priest and, like, gives him all these weird details while
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: still kind of frantically yelling at him. Like, and then,
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: you've got to come help him. You've got to come
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: help him. And we're like, I was waiting for the
- 1:04:02Speaker 4: priest to just, like, slap him or something. Because he
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: was almost hysterical how he was, like, yelling about it.
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: Yeah, you're right.
- 1:04:07Speaker 4: You've got to help Johnny. You've got to help him.
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: Yeah, he was so over the top.
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: Shut up.
- 1:04:10Speaker 4: Take me there.
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know. I mean, because he really is, like,
- 1:04:15Speaker 3: a casual acquaintance from work that.
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: That all of a sudden he's so invested in his life.
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: Kind of like in The Machinist, like Trevor Resnick. Like people,
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: like most people, like sort of a real standoff approach
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: because the dude's so odd and bizarre. And same thing,
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: like somebody got hurt and they were like, it's your fault,
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: you know. But do you think The Machinist ripped off? Wow.
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: I had a little higher hopes for The Machinist. I
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: think that director's pretty awesome.
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: Let's say he just dreamed it up on his own
- 1:04:45Speaker 4: and he never saw this movie.
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: Right. I'll bet you he never did see it. It's
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: a coincidence because it's just the machinist is so goddamn good.
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: So the priest comes and he kind of discovers somebody
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: tied up, right? Yeah, he discovers one of the girls
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: tied up. Yeah. And then Donnie knows that the priest
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: is in the house.
- 1:05:11Speaker 4: I'm trying to think, because then he catches him at
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: the church at one point, too, because he's trying to
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: get holy water from the church to get the evil out.
- 1:05:19Speaker 4: So I guess he kind of touched base with him
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: eventually in the middle there. So then, yeah, I guess
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: he just comes across him in the house there when
- 1:05:29Speaker 4: he's getting ready to go burn some more people.
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: Yeah, he's getting ready to burn somebody, and the priest
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: discovers the girl, right?
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: Or I think the bodies at that point.
- 1:05:37Speaker 3: The bodies, yeah.
- 1:05:37Speaker 4: I think he'd already burned the two of them.
- 1:05:39Speaker 3: Yeah, so he discovers the bodies, and then... I feel
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: like I should remember this. I don't know. I'm spacing
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: on this. I think then Donnie somehow... Like, he kills
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: the priest or something.
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: Yeah, I think then the priest gets.
- 1:05:50Speaker 3: Or knocks him out, he falls down the stairs, whatever.
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: And then it sort of takes this big jump into...
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: Like you say, he's created sort of this congregation of
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: burned-up women... And he goes back to the whole playing
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: his music loud and shit.
- 1:06:07Speaker 4: Time for the party to start now. He got some beer.
- 1:06:10Speaker 4: Turn it up to seven now.
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: Yeah. And he has all these like charred corpses. dressed
- 1:06:16Speaker 3: up in uh i guess what i assume would be
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: his mother's.
- 1:06:19Speaker 4: Clothes yeah again they never really spell the stuff out
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: it's just tiny little touches but you do see him
- 1:06:24Speaker 4: at that one point in the beginning going and like
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: getting his mother's clothes and then he disappeared so then
- 1:06:29Speaker 4: i'm like oh are we really going psycho is he
- 1:06:31Speaker 4: going to put him on but then later you realize
- 1:06:33Speaker 4: oh he's dressing all these other young girls in his
- 1:06:36Speaker 4: old mother's clothes so they're all just dressed like old
- 1:06:39Speaker 4: ladies and charred up for Which Mom was not near
- 1:06:43Speaker 4: as charred as the other ones, as you look at
- 1:06:45Speaker 4: the makeup job.
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: She was more blue.
- 1:06:47Speaker 4: Yeah. Well, she just, like, she's almost just painted kind
- 1:06:49Speaker 4: of black. Like, at first I was like, why is
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: she that color? Because she, at least the other ones, like, they're, like,
- 1:06:53Speaker 4: missing noses. Like, it almost does kind of look like
- 1:06:56Speaker 4: a burn victim thing. But, like, Mom is just, I guess,
- 1:06:59Speaker 4: just for effect. Like, she just has, like, a creepy,
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: because they do cut to, like, weird little scenes where
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: she is, like, the actress is actually standing there looking
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: at him or talking to him.
- 1:07:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:07:08Speaker 4: It does look creepy. Like the effect works, but so
- 1:07:10Speaker 4: I guess that was why, just so they could do
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: the cutaways to her being kind of a creepy ghoul
- 1:07:14Speaker 4: hanging around, freaking him out.
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:07:17Speaker 3: And they do like, they do that thing that a
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: lot of seventies movies did with like the voices, the
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: whispering voices, like, you know, don't go in the house
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: and let's scare Jessica to death. Like those kinds of
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: movies that.
- 1:07:29Speaker 4: Um, if you hear creepy voices, it's all right.
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:07:32Speaker 4: It's just a seventies horror movie.
- 1:07:33Speaker 3: Yeah. They're always whispering creepy voices. And, um, I guess
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: the mom is yelling at him, and then the other
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: girls sort of join in, and now everybody's standing up.
- 1:07:48Speaker 3: I'm not sure what the symbolism is here, where they're
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: all sort of closing in on him. It's not real.
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: They're not really doing it. I think he's imagining it.
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: I hope it is.
- 1:08:00Speaker 4: I wanted some... Because I do actually like that scene,
- 1:08:02Speaker 4: because they do put... Then you can see their eyes. Before,
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: it just kind of looked like they made really good-looking
- 1:08:07Speaker 4: dummies sitting in his room. But at that point, they
- 1:08:09Speaker 4: really did make them all up, and the makeup looks
- 1:08:11Speaker 4: pretty cool. You can see all three actresses in full-on
- 1:08:15Speaker 4: burn makeup.
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: Coming at him. But they have that very, like, not
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: like a more modern zombie. It's like arms out, almost
- 1:08:23Speaker 3: like voodoo-type zombie going after Donnie. I always took it
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: as like, He was hallucinating. That's the point where he
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: really lost it. Because up to that point, there was
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: nothing really truly paranormal or anything.
- 1:08:42Speaker 4: I mean, again, there are cut little moments like that.
- 1:08:45Speaker 4: But he always racks to it like you think even
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: then it's in his head. Because, again, there's voices like
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: dueling in his head. Because it's the whispery voices that
- 1:08:54Speaker 4: are telling him, oh, good, your mom's gone now. Now
- 1:08:57Speaker 4: you can do whatever you want, which I guess is
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: his crazy idea. side of his brain. And then there's
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: mother screaming at him in her voice, which, again, she's dead.
- 1:09:06Speaker 4: So we know it's not real. So that's the other
- 1:09:09Speaker 4: side of his crazy brain. So all of this is,
- 1:09:11Speaker 4: I'm assuming, in his head. But he's battling with, you know,
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: the overbearing, like, kind of the psycho overbearing mother going
- 1:09:18Speaker 4: to go tell you to kill him. Versus his own
- 1:09:20Speaker 4: weird demons that are in his side of his head
- 1:09:23Speaker 4: telling him to kill his mother. And now that mother's gone,
- 1:09:25Speaker 4: he can do whatever he wants. So he's already got
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: all of that going on in his head. And there
- 1:09:29Speaker 4: was one scene earlier where you see the girls kind
- 1:09:32Speaker 4: of look at him and say something too. So there's
- 1:09:34Speaker 4: another little moment where they're sort of reanimated. But again,
- 1:09:38Speaker 4: I always kind of assumed all of that is in
- 1:09:41Speaker 4: his head.
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: So he is like, back off, back off. And instead
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: of just like, I mean, if they're so slow, it's
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: like you don't have to.
- 1:09:52Speaker 4: Old school zombie rules.
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: Yeah, you don't have to try to re-burn them. I mean,
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: obviously burning them didn't work in the first place if
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: they're up and at you. So he starts trying to
- 1:10:00Speaker 3: torch everybody and he sets the area around him on fire.
- 1:10:04Speaker 4: He just blankets the whole room in fire.
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: Yeah, and he's not in his suit. So you assume
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: that he burns up and dies. And then the movie
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: ends with yet another shrewish woman yelling at her kid.
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: And you know what? I got to say, it's pretty relatable.
- 1:10:22Speaker 4: I mean– That's my takeaway is, like, don't be a
- 1:10:26Speaker 4: horrible parent. Yeah. Because really, that's what keeps creating these psychos.
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: Yeah, and they sort of, there's a lady on at
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: her kid, and the kid's, like, trying to watch TV,
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: and she's basically dressing him down. And it just pushes
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: in on the kid who's staring at the camera, you know,
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: implying that, you know, another Donnie is being created.
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: And they start talking to him. You hear the same voices, like, oh,
- 1:10:50Speaker 4: don't worry. We'll take care of you. We'll fix everything.
- 1:10:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: So yeah. Yeah.
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: Like if your mom yelled at you in the seventies,
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: like overly, overly, you're going to hear whispering voices for sure.
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: It doesn't everybody. Oh, nevermind then.
- 1:11:05Speaker 3: Yeah. Um, the movie, the movie itself is like, again,
- 1:11:11Speaker 3: somebody watches it today. They might be like, what a
- 1:11:13Speaker 3: piece of shit. But, but from a nostalgic sort of
- 1:11:16Speaker 3: point of view, like personally for like the location.
- 1:11:20Speaker 4: Your personal tie to it.
- 1:11:21Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. Um, It really was, I felt, like a
- 1:11:26Speaker 3: very creepy, weird, like, again, it's 79.
- 1:11:32Speaker 4: For that time period, you hadn't seen a lot. I mean,
- 1:11:34Speaker 4: it's even pre-Slasher. I mean, this is right when Friday
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: the 13th starts happening, and we haven't even gotten to
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: Halloween yet. So it's like we're just getting to the
- 1:11:43Speaker 4: point where normal kids can start to handle these things, really,
- 1:11:46Speaker 4: on a regular basis.
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: Yeah. It was very early on, and, I mean, a
- 1:11:52Speaker 3: good attempt at, trying to make the director definitely accomplished
- 1:11:59Speaker 3: like making it very like weird and off-putting and creepy
- 1:12:03Speaker 3: as a solid movie not so much because like you're
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: just left guessing so like what the fuck is going on.
- 1:12:09Speaker 4: Like I feel like yeah I feel like it definitely
- 1:12:12Speaker 4: could fill in the middle part of the story there
- 1:12:14Speaker 4: But at the same time, by the end, I give
- 1:12:16Speaker 4: him points for being different because I assumed it was
- 1:12:19Speaker 4: going to be a very bastardized version of Psycho, that
- 1:12:23Speaker 4: it really was going to lean heavy on the mother thing.
- 1:12:25Speaker 4: And we really don't. It builds on that at the
- 1:12:27Speaker 4: beginning and then kind of veers off and all the
- 1:12:30Speaker 4: other girl stuff takes it in a different direction that
- 1:12:33Speaker 4: you don't necessarily see coming. So I'm like, I kind
- 1:12:36Speaker 4: of appreciate that he just put that little touch in
- 1:12:38Speaker 4: there and went, no, I'm going to do my own
- 1:12:39Speaker 4: weird thing.
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: Yeah, but the weird thing is so far removed from like,
- 1:12:43Speaker 3: Because at first he's like, oh, cool, my mom's dead.
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: I'm going to act like a rebellious child. And then
- 1:12:48Speaker 3: I'm going to go buy a World War I era
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: fucking flamethrower with an asbestos suit and just start torching women.
- 1:12:56Speaker 4: Again, it's a weird jump there.
- 1:12:58Speaker 3: Yeah. I don't know if they ever, like, I don't
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: know if that whole push in on the kid was like. Sequel. Yeah.
- 1:13:05Speaker 3: At the time, though, it was like, because you remember, like,
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: you watch Friday the 13th and then you watch Friday
- 1:13:11Speaker 3: the 13th part two. The first 10 minutes of Friday
- 1:13:13Speaker 3: the 13th Part 2 is recapping Friday the 13th Part 1.
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: I mean, last time on Friday the 13th.
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: Yeah, because you didn't have the, again, VHS wasn't super popular.
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: And they're like, well, if they didn't see the first movie.
- 1:13:25Speaker 4: We got to make sure they know what's going on.
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: Yeah, you kind of have to re-explain Jason and all
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: this stuff. But with something like this, you can see why.
- 1:13:33Speaker 3: Good cover, too, like the house and the eyes. It's
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: a cool.
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: Actually, the best, I thought, as far as being shot,
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: there's right when he gets home. It's at the very beginning.
- 1:13:42Speaker 4: I kind of was hoping for more creative shots. It
- 1:13:45Speaker 4: gets kind of traditional after that, but there's two different
- 1:13:48Speaker 4: shots right as he comes in the house to go
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: make mom tea that are oddly angled. It's weird. It's
- 1:13:55Speaker 4: angled weird as he comes in the door. It's like, mother,
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: and it's this sort of Dutch angle shot of him with, like,
- 1:14:01Speaker 4: the house behind him that looks weird, and then there's
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: a shot when he comes up almost right after that that's, like,
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: this weird angle on the staircase behind his head, and, like,
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: it got super creative for a minute there, and then, like,
- 1:14:11Speaker 4: after that, it just kind of becomes a kind of
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: cut-and-dry movie, but he had potential. Like, I looked, the
- 1:14:16Speaker 4: director did one other movie after this, and that was it. Like,
- 1:14:20Speaker 4: he did not direct anything. There's one in, like, 86,
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: I think it's, like, Joey or something, just some other
- 1:14:24Speaker 4: kid from the, Burrow, I guess. I couldn't tell what
- 1:14:27Speaker 4: else was going on in that one. But other than that,
- 1:14:29Speaker 4: that was the last thing he directed in the mid-' 80s
- 1:14:31Speaker 4: and gone. So I don't know. Yeah, he had promise.
- 1:14:37Speaker 3: I don't know. There's a shot where he goes into
- 1:14:40Speaker 3: some little convenience store. At the time, it was a Krauser's.
- 1:14:44Speaker 3: And then when he comes out, because it's a lady
- 1:14:46Speaker 3: and two kids, and I think he's kind of bugging her. Yeah,
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: it sounds like it. And there's a movie theater right there.
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:14:52Speaker 3: And that's still there today. That was the movie theater
- 1:14:57Speaker 3: where we saw everything, like me and Walt and Kevin,
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: who we didn't know him as kids. Anybody in that area. Yeah,
- 1:15:08Speaker 3: that's where you went because that was the cheap. I
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: think it was $ 1. 50 to see a movie. They had
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: one theater and whatever was playing was playing. You just
- 1:15:19Speaker 3: saw everything there. I saw, what was it, caged heat?
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: Or chained heat. Whichever one had Linda Blair. I think
- 1:15:26Speaker 3: it was chained heat had Linda Blair in it. And
- 1:15:29Speaker 3: rated R meant nothing. And I always had myself convinced
- 1:15:34Speaker 3: that at 13 or 14 that I looked 17 just
- 1:15:37Speaker 3: because I was tall because No one ever checked.
- 1:15:39Speaker 4: Now you look at those pictures and be like, I
- 1:15:41Speaker 4: was a kid. What the hell were they doing?
- 1:15:43Speaker 3: Look at me. They just wanted the money. There's no
- 1:15:45Speaker 3: way they thought I was 17.
- 1:15:46Speaker 4: They really didn't care because I remember hitting that summer.
- 1:15:48Speaker 4: I feel like there was a summer where they got
- 1:15:50Speaker 4: a lot of heat and they changed everything because I
- 1:15:52Speaker 4: remember even all the way up into the 80s, I
- 1:15:55Speaker 4: went and saw Aliens in the theater. I'm like, they
- 1:15:58Speaker 4: blow a ton of, that's hardcore art. At least at
- 1:16:02Speaker 4: that point, it's not. But I mean, it's a hell
- 1:16:03Speaker 4: of a lot of violence and cursing and I'm like,
- 1:16:06Speaker 4: just let kids in there all the time and like
- 1:16:09Speaker 4: that next year it was just like they threw down
- 1:16:12Speaker 4: the rule like you had to have I don't even
- 1:16:13Speaker 4: think it was like Legal Guardian it was like your
- 1:16:15Speaker 4: parent has to be here we need ID like they
- 1:16:18Speaker 4: changed everything in one year.
- 1:16:20Speaker 3: Because movies became like booze where it's like hey man
- 1:16:22Speaker 3: can you buy us a six pack can you get
- 1:16:24Speaker 3: me in hey man can you get me into Excalibur.
- 1:16:27Speaker 4: Oh lord I want to see a weird artsy movie
- 1:16:30Speaker 4: but it's got nudity so I need.
- 1:16:31Speaker 3: To get in that was it man like Excalibur And
- 1:16:35Speaker 3: then you look at movies like movies that would never
- 1:16:39Speaker 3: in a million years get made the way they got
- 1:16:41Speaker 3: made then. Oh, yeah. Like the Bad News Bears.
- 1:16:43Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: The Bad News Bears for anyone who grew up in
- 1:16:46Speaker 3: the 70s, you're like, that was my life. That was it.
- 1:16:50Speaker 3: That was my life, man. You know?
- 1:16:53Speaker 4: It's sad when you watch that now. Like, oh, shit. No,
- 1:16:55Speaker 4: this all really went on.
- 1:16:57Speaker 3: And people like you, and I don't want to get too,
- 1:17:00Speaker 3: because I'll start grandstanding and shit. But like you look
- 1:17:04Speaker 3: at it. You know, kids, whatever, today with, you know,
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: safe spaces and triggers and this and that. And you're like,
- 1:17:12Speaker 3: you have no idea, man. Kind of.
- 1:17:16Speaker 4: I came into that and then I started looking at
- 1:17:18Speaker 4: the stuff that's going on. And I'm like, yeah, on
- 1:17:20Speaker 4: one hand, we've made these weird wussy kids that like
- 1:17:23Speaker 4: don't know how to handle anything in the real world.
- 1:17:26Speaker 4: But they're also, like, immersed in the internet, which is
- 1:17:29Speaker 4: the den of depravity. Like, I think about, if I
- 1:17:32Speaker 4: saw the shit that I see on the internet now
- 1:17:34Speaker 4: when I was, like, six, my head would have exploded. And, like,
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: these kids are just numb to it already. So I'm like,
- 1:17:40Speaker 4: I think we're finding a weird balance between the two
- 1:17:43Speaker 4: that may, again, turn them all into Donnie. I don't know.
- 1:17:46Speaker 3: But, like.
- 1:17:47Speaker 4: It is this weird mixture of like we want to
- 1:17:49Speaker 4: soccer mom them to death and be helicopter parents and
- 1:17:51Speaker 4: keep them super safe. But at the same time, they're
- 1:17:54Speaker 4: exposed to the atrocities of the world like really young now.
- 1:17:58Speaker 4: So I don't know what the leftover is after all
- 1:18:02Speaker 4: of that.
- 1:18:02Speaker 3: Yeah, you could kind of say like LiveLeak is their
- 1:18:09Speaker 3: faces of death.
- 1:18:11Speaker 4: I mean, again, some of it is just real world
- 1:18:13Speaker 4: stuff that you now have access to even just on
- 1:18:15Speaker 4: the news. But– on top of that, like the shit
- 1:18:18Speaker 4: that you can get to any horrible rabbit hole you
- 1:18:21Speaker 4: fall down on the internet that I'm like, I don't
- 1:18:24Speaker 4: think I could have handled that when I was that young.
- 1:18:26Speaker 4: I'm just like, I, again, because I guess I wasn't
- 1:18:28Speaker 4: exposed to anything then because there wasn't anything or certainly
- 1:18:31Speaker 4: nothing I could get to. So it's like, by the
- 1:18:34Speaker 4: time I started getting to that stuff, I was just like,
- 1:18:36Speaker 4: holy shit, what is this? And I was still like
- 1:18:38Speaker 4: teens at that point when I started seeing horrible things.
- 1:18:41Speaker 4: So it's like, yeah, I don't know. I think we're, we're,
- 1:18:44Speaker 4: creating a weird mixture of the two that, like, they
- 1:18:47Speaker 4: don't know how to handle life, but yet they see...
- 1:18:50Speaker 4: the worst of it at the same time so I
- 1:18:52Speaker 4: don't know you don't.
- 1:18:53Speaker 3: Really hear about those kids that much the ones that
- 1:18:55Speaker 3: yeah the ones that can handle it because it's the
- 1:18:56Speaker 3: ones that but it's not even kids it's like college
- 1:18:59Speaker 3: students you know it's not even young kids it's college
- 1:19:01Speaker 3: students well again kids.
- 1:19:03Speaker 4: In college now have never not had the internet that
- 1:19:07Speaker 4: like the first time I heard that I was like
- 1:19:08Speaker 4: oh shit that's true like It didn't dawn on me
- 1:19:11Speaker 4: until somebody made that statement. I was like, that's weird.
- 1:19:14Speaker 4: Cause now we're really going to start seeing this whole
- 1:19:15Speaker 4: new generation that was raised on that. And like what
- 1:19:19Speaker 4: the effect is, because I don't know. Well, cell phones too.
- 1:19:22Speaker 3: Yeah, like you have a generation where it's like, well,
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: I don't remember a time when there wasn't cell phones,
- 1:19:27Speaker 3: you know?
- 1:19:27Speaker 4: Or when I couldn't just know the answer to stuff.
- 1:19:30Speaker 4: Like when I talk about doing a report as a
- 1:19:31Speaker 4: kid and going to the library, going to get the
- 1:19:34Speaker 4: Funk and Wagnall encyclopedia. Yeah. Like no way is that
- 1:19:38Speaker 4: going to make any sense to a kid today. So again,
- 1:19:41Speaker 4: it's like, it's just such a different perspective for somebody
- 1:19:44Speaker 4: that's like immersed in the internet. Like it's just, it
- 1:19:47Speaker 4: has all the answers and, and all the horrors of
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: everything that can be thrown at you all at once
- 1:19:52Speaker 4: at a really young age. Because, you know, as soon
- 1:19:55Speaker 4: as you can walk, they're handing you a MyPad, which
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: is what they now refer to, the kids' ones with
- 1:20:00Speaker 4: handles on them so they can chew on it and
- 1:20:02Speaker 4: still watch videos. So I'm like, that's the generation we're
- 1:20:06Speaker 4: raising now. It's like little kids carrying computers around all day.
- 1:20:09Speaker 3: Yeah, and I'm guilty of it too. My kid, she's 11,
- 1:20:12Speaker 3: you know. Down syndrome. She's got a laptop. She's got
- 1:20:18Speaker 3: two iPads.
- 1:20:19Speaker 4: Again.
- 1:20:20Speaker 3: She wants an iPhone so she can text her friend,
- 1:20:24Speaker 3: but she can't really– she couldn't– she can't spell that well. So, like,
- 1:20:27Speaker 3: in her mind– I can't either. Yeah. I don't know
- 1:20:31Speaker 3: what she thinks texting is, but she'll just be like,
- 1:20:33Speaker 3: text Kayla.
- 1:20:34Speaker 4: Again, it's what you do. Yeah.
- 1:20:36Speaker 3: That's just what people do.
- 1:20:37Speaker 4: It's her reaction to anything. Oh, I need to text
- 1:20:39Speaker 4: her and let her know what's going on. Like, that's–
- 1:20:42Speaker 4: That's communication to kids now, which is weird. Again, you're
- 1:20:45Speaker 4: seeing the weird Donnie thing. They're going to get to
- 1:20:47Speaker 4: a point where they don't know how to socialize in
- 1:20:49Speaker 4: real life. But like texting is going to be their
- 1:20:51Speaker 4: knee-jerk reaction to, you know, I got to go update
- 1:20:54Speaker 4: my status. But they don't know how to sit down
- 1:20:56Speaker 4: and have coffee with people. They're all going to turn
- 1:20:59Speaker 4: into Donnie is what I'm saying.
- 1:21:01Speaker 3: Yeah, it's weird too because you're like– you just remember
- 1:21:04Speaker 3: when you were a kid– you didn't text somebody or
- 1:21:10Speaker 3: most of them didn't even call somebody. You would just like, hey,
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: I wonder what they're doing. And you would just go
- 1:21:14Speaker 3: to their house.
- 1:21:14Speaker 4: Go over to their house and beat on the door
- 1:21:16Speaker 4: and their parents would be like, oh, this is it again.
- 1:21:18Speaker 4: What do you want? Can Johnny come out and play? Like,
- 1:21:21Speaker 4: fuck no. Get off my porch, weirdo.
- 1:21:23Speaker 3: And I'm talking even into the late 80s. I remember
- 1:21:26Speaker 3: times like calling Kevin and like, The phone was busy,
- 1:21:29Speaker 3: and I'm like, ah, screw it. I'll just walk to
- 1:21:32Speaker 3: his house and see.
- 1:21:32Speaker 4: Or I guess we don't play with him. Screw that guy.
- 1:21:35Speaker 3: Yeah, wait for the busy signal to be done. Like
- 1:21:38Speaker 3: call waiting. The advent of call waiting was like, wow,
- 1:21:41Speaker 3: now you don't have to get a busy signal. So
- 1:21:45Speaker 3: many kids today are probably like, what's a busy signal?
- 1:21:47Speaker 3: Call waiting. Yeah.
- 1:21:50Speaker 4: Even that's a joke at this point.
- 1:21:51Speaker 3: Yeah and it's like if call waiting doesn't go through
- 1:21:53Speaker 3: then I'll text them and if I don't text them
- 1:21:55Speaker 3: well then like I'll hit them up on Instagram.
- 1:21:57Speaker 4: Or I'll just see where they checked in recently and
- 1:22:00Speaker 4: see where they are right now like you can find
- 1:22:02Speaker 4: people in so many ways it's ridiculous.
- 1:22:04Speaker 3: Yeah it's not you can't even hide if you want to.
- 1:22:06Speaker 4: Which yeah before it's like and again kind of the
- 1:22:08Speaker 4: other thing we've talked about before is like we just
- 1:22:11Speaker 4: used to go like as a kid like we certainly
- 1:22:13Speaker 4: didn't have a cell phone and like your parents didn't
- 1:22:16Speaker 4: know where the fuck you were it's just like alright
- 1:22:18Speaker 4: they're out playing in the neighborhood the neighborhood, wherever, wherever
- 1:22:20Speaker 4: that was for you. Like we'd be over the next street.
- 1:22:23Speaker 4: We'd be on our bikes down the block, you know,
- 1:22:25Speaker 4: and like parents didn't really worry about it. Not in the,
- 1:22:29Speaker 4: and they couldn't even get ahold of it. Like now
- 1:22:31Speaker 4: there's all these weird new technical things. I don't know
- 1:22:34Speaker 4: how much you've seen these weird commercials, but like all
- 1:22:36Speaker 4: of a sudden in the last year or so, there's,
- 1:22:39Speaker 4: A thing that, like an app you can put on
- 1:22:40Speaker 4: your kid's phone that really does keep, like it's a
- 1:22:43Speaker 4: tracker basically. And it tells you where they are at
- 1:22:46Speaker 4: all times. So you can find them on a map
- 1:22:48Speaker 4: and see if they told you that they were going
- 1:22:50Speaker 4: to the store. But they're over at their friend Wendy's house.
- 1:22:53Speaker 4: You can bust them on it. There's also like every
- 1:22:56Speaker 4: home now, according to these commercials, has a camera built
- 1:22:59Speaker 4: into it. So that you can see when your kid's
- 1:23:01Speaker 4: not doing what you... And they billeted that. Again, it's
- 1:23:03Speaker 4: the helicopter parent advertising of like, hey, see when your
- 1:23:06Speaker 4: kid's not doing his homework when he tells you. I'm like, shit,
- 1:23:08Speaker 4: we should just lie to him. We can't even do
- 1:23:11Speaker 4: that anymore.
- 1:23:11Speaker 3: It's helicopter parent versus very close like big brother.
- 1:23:14Speaker 4: Yeah, it really is like... But that's what I think
- 1:23:17Speaker 4: is funny is they're leaning on the advertising end of it.
- 1:23:20Speaker 4: If you broke this down on paper, people would be like, oh,
- 1:23:23Speaker 4: that's fucking creepy. Why is there a camera in your
- 1:23:24Speaker 4: house all the time? Why are people tracking your children?
- 1:23:27Speaker 4: But when you lean on it as this is a
- 1:23:29Speaker 4: convenient for you parents, I'm like, oh, no. This is like, yeah,
- 1:23:34Speaker 4: we're entering into a weird, scary world where the advertising
- 1:23:37Speaker 4: end of it is going to push that stuff right
- 1:23:39Speaker 4: over the edge. Nobody's going to question it anymore.
- 1:23:42Speaker 3: Yeah. Like I said, Sage goes to a mainstream school.
- 1:23:47Speaker 3: She's a special ed. So half the day she's a
- 1:23:48Speaker 3: special ed, half the day she's in mainstream school. And
- 1:23:51Speaker 3: when I pick her up, I have to go inside,
- 1:23:55Speaker 3: sign a piece of paper. And then, you know, she
- 1:23:59Speaker 3: comes down, and then we leave. And that's not just
- 1:24:02Speaker 3: for special ed.
- 1:24:03Speaker 4: That's every kid. They used to unleash you upon the neighborhood.
- 1:24:06Speaker 3: That's every kid.
- 1:24:08Speaker 4: Kick open the doors when the bell rings, and you
- 1:24:10Speaker 4: ran out into the street, literally in the street.
- 1:24:13Speaker 3: Yeah, like just, yeah, I live next to that highway that...
- 1:24:16Speaker 3: That you see in the movie, that's the highway I walked.
- 1:24:19Speaker 3: In second grade, that's the highway I walked along to
- 1:24:21Speaker 3: get to school.
- 1:24:21Speaker 4: That highway where psychos were picking up people, that was
- 1:24:24Speaker 4: me walking home every day.
- 1:24:25Speaker 3: Drunk chicks stumbling out of the web. You're like, hey, girls,
- 1:24:28Speaker 3: how's it going?
- 1:24:30Speaker 4: I know I'm in second grade, but just saying. Can
- 1:24:32Speaker 4: I have some of that beer?
- 1:24:33Speaker 3: And now everybody is tracking their kid, and back then
- 1:24:38Speaker 3: it was like you would frustrate your parents to the
- 1:24:40Speaker 3: point where they're like, go outside and play. And go
- 1:24:43Speaker 3: outside and play meant like it's 9 in the morning,
- 1:24:46Speaker 3: get the fuck out of the house, and you knew
- 1:24:48Speaker 3: when to come home. In our town, the fire whistle
- 1:24:50Speaker 3: would go off at 5, and that's how you knew
- 1:24:51Speaker 3: it was time to come home.
- 1:24:52Speaker 4: Yeah, the streetlights came on. Ah, shit, I guess I
- 1:24:54Speaker 4: got to go home. It was that, like dusk. Time
- 1:24:58Speaker 4: for dinner. I guess I've got to go home now. Like,
- 1:25:00Speaker 4: you'd be gone for 12 hours straight. Your parents didn't
- 1:25:03Speaker 4: know where you were, what sort of illegal activities you
- 1:25:05Speaker 4: were involved in.
- 1:25:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:25:06Speaker 4: Like, you were just terrorizing a neighborhood. And, like, nobody cared.
- 1:25:10Speaker 4: So it is weird to get these little snapshots into
- 1:25:13Speaker 4: the 70s and even into the 80s. And it's just like,
- 1:25:16Speaker 4: it is a different world than that... what seems like
- 1:25:19Speaker 4: a short amount of time, it is a different world.
- 1:25:22Speaker 3: That's how you never get old, because you know so
- 1:25:24Speaker 3: many people, like your grandparents' generation, they watch the same
- 1:25:27Speaker 3: thing happen.
- 1:25:28Speaker 4: Oh, these... These damn kids today.
- 1:25:31Speaker 3: These kids with their call waiting, what they're so.
- 1:25:34Speaker 4: Kids with your Ataris, you're going to burn your eyes
- 1:25:37Speaker 4: out looking at that screen.
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:25:41Speaker 3: There's nothing you can do except embrace and just get angry.
- 1:25:44Speaker 4: Again, try to at least red flag the problem areas
- 1:25:48Speaker 4: that I see that I'm just like, okay, there's plenty
- 1:25:51Speaker 4: of conveniences here. Don't get me wrong. I make use
- 1:25:53Speaker 4: of the internet and all the new technology as best
- 1:25:56Speaker 4: I can. But there's a point where it starts getting
- 1:25:58Speaker 4: into a gray area of like, big brother, we're really
- 1:26:02Speaker 4: taking away some civil liberties here.
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:26:04Speaker 3: No privacy at all.
- 1:26:05Speaker 4: It's, yeah, it's kind of weird. Some of the weird
- 1:26:07Speaker 4: things that have crossed over now that like, again, I
- 1:26:11Speaker 4: know someone who has the weird camera built into their house. Like,
- 1:26:15Speaker 4: so when it rings the doorbell, they can see who's there.
- 1:26:17Speaker 3: Oh, the ring.
- 1:26:18Speaker 4: And they will, they will just like in the middle
- 1:26:21Speaker 4: of a conversation, they'll be like, oh yeah, what were
- 1:26:23Speaker 4: you doing over there yesterday at four o'clock? And like,
- 1:26:25Speaker 4: not even accusing you of anything, just be like, oh,
- 1:26:27Speaker 4: I know that you were in my house yesterday doing something.
- 1:26:30Speaker 4: And I'm like, That's kind of, I mean, it's, I guess,
- 1:26:33Speaker 4: creepy if somebody you don't know is in your house.
- 1:26:34Speaker 4: But at the same time, I'm like, it's weird that
- 1:26:36Speaker 4: you know that. And now it's just casual conversation of like, hey,
- 1:26:39Speaker 4: did you come by and pick up the mail for me?
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 1:26:41Speaker 4: I saw you there yesterday. I'm like, that's just normal
- 1:26:43Speaker 4: for people now. Like, that's so weird.
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: Well, it's the equivalent of screening calls. It's like somebody
- 1:26:48Speaker 3: comes to the door and you're like, eh, man.
- 1:26:50Speaker 4: I don't think so. That UPS guy can leave that
- 1:26:53Speaker 4: on the porch.
- 1:26:55Speaker 3: It is, yeah.
- 1:26:56Speaker 4: It's just the stuff being thrown at us now. I
- 1:26:59Speaker 4: don't know if our brains can handle it. So all
- 1:27:03Speaker 4: the kids will turn into Donnie.
- 1:27:04Speaker 3: An army of Donnies out there. Look at all the ladies.
- 1:27:09Speaker 4: And my only other comment on Donnie is that Dan,
- 1:27:13Speaker 4: who plays him in this movie, at this point, I
- 1:27:16Speaker 4: looked him up now because I hadn't watched a ton
- 1:27:18Speaker 4: of Sopranos, so I was just like, yeah, he's barely
- 1:27:20Speaker 4: recognizable now. But in 1979, he looks like Jimmy Fallon
- 1:27:25Speaker 4: with a weird wig on.
- 1:27:26Speaker 3: He does. He's got a weird.
- 1:27:28Speaker 4: Jimmy Fallon look to him that I like. If Jimmy
- 1:27:29Speaker 4: Fallon was doing a character with a bad wig, this
- 1:27:32Speaker 4: is exactly what he looks like, Matt.
- 1:27:34Speaker 3: Actually, you know what he looks like? He looks like
- 1:27:35Speaker 3: if Jimmy Fallon and Richard Ramirez had a baby, right?
- 1:27:38Speaker 4: Which maybe.
- 1:27:39Speaker 3: He has that Richard Ramirez hair.
- 1:27:41Speaker 4: I don't know what went on between the two of them,
- 1:27:43Speaker 4: but let's hope that.
- 1:27:46Speaker 3: And probably the first time in history anyone's ever been like,
- 1:27:48Speaker 3: what would it be like if Jimmy Fallon made it
- 1:27:50Speaker 3: with a serial killer?
- 1:27:51Speaker 4: If we could mix two people together, let's pick our
- 1:27:53Speaker 4: favorite two. Oh, Lord. So, yeah, this was definitely a
- 1:27:59Speaker 4: fun movie to throw into. Mostly just the perspective of
- 1:28:03Speaker 4: movies at that time and, like, all the weird stuff
- 1:28:05Speaker 4: that was going on. And, yeah, I think that's it.
- 1:28:07Speaker 4: It's just a weird 80s fetish about blowtorching people.
- 1:28:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:28:11Speaker 4: That went away. Like, you didn't get a ton of
- 1:28:13Speaker 4: that after those couple of movies.
- 1:28:15Speaker 3: And, like... It didn't catch on like the machete.
- 1:28:18Speaker 4: Yeah, the machete is still, yeah, everybody carries one of
- 1:28:20Speaker 4: their own. You don't see a ton of blowtorch people
- 1:28:22Speaker 4: at conventions.
- 1:28:23Speaker 3: It's just so insanely impractical, right?
- 1:28:26Speaker 4: Well, that was even when he's in the room, like
- 1:28:27Speaker 4: he's pouring, I don't know if it was gasoline or kerosene,
- 1:28:31Speaker 4: like that first girl, he like douses her and stuff.
- 1:28:33Speaker 4: And I'm like, you really don't need a blowtorch then.
- 1:28:36Speaker 4: Like you could use a match Yeah. And she would
- 1:28:38Speaker 4: burn up.
- 1:28:39Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 1:28:40Speaker 4: Like if you're going to soak her in some sort
- 1:28:42Speaker 4: of accelerant, why bother with a blowtorch?
- 1:28:45Speaker 3: And she's like, no, please, please, please. And it's, I
- 1:28:48Speaker 3: guess it's a really like last ditch effort because you're like,
- 1:28:50Speaker 3: holy shit, I can't believe I'm hanging up here getting
- 1:28:53Speaker 3: my gas poured on me. But it's like, if someone's
- 1:28:55Speaker 3: gone that far... There's no pleasing at that point. Yeah,
- 1:28:59Speaker 3: appealing to their sense of, you know, humanity.
- 1:29:03Speaker 4: Humanity is probably not there if you're torching people with
- 1:29:06Speaker 4: a blowtorch. Oh, man. So, yeah, that's our takeaway. Stop
- 1:29:13Speaker 4: blowtorching people.
- 1:29:14Speaker 3: Yeah, knock it off.
- 1:29:17Speaker 4: Oh, well, thank you for being here. I guess tell
- 1:29:19Speaker 4: people what, you know, you've said you're doing all the
- 1:29:21Speaker 4: same stuff, but I guess what's the best way to
- 1:29:23Speaker 4: keep up with your Activities?
- 1:29:26Speaker 3: Right now, yeah, just tell them Steve, Dave, me, Walt,
- 1:29:30Speaker 3: and Quinn from Impractical Jokers, the podcast we do. Like
- 1:29:36Speaker 3: I said, I think they're on AMC. There's maybe one
- 1:29:38Speaker 3: or two more episodes of Comic Book Men. We're waiting
- 1:29:40Speaker 3: to see if we get season seven. We're always, you know,
- 1:29:43Speaker 3: Always waiting.
- 1:29:44Speaker 4: They promote the hell out of it, so I would
- 1:29:45Speaker 4: assume they want to.
- 1:29:47Speaker 3: Keep that ball rolling. Yeah, it looks okay. It looks
- 1:29:49Speaker 3: like we're going to go again, but we haven't heard
- 1:29:51Speaker 3: anything official. You never know. You never know. You never know.
- 1:29:55Speaker 4: Yeah, you guys have got a rabid fan base on
- 1:29:57Speaker 4: the podcast, too. Just watching the podcast world as I
- 1:30:00Speaker 4: do every week, I'm like, you can see shows that
- 1:30:03Speaker 4: just sort of have people that listen... And your guys
- 1:30:06Speaker 4: are like hardcore. Your fan base is pretty dedicated.
- 1:30:09Speaker 3: I love the people. Like when I'm at the booth,
- 1:30:11Speaker 3: you know, right now we're in Lexington Comic Con. And
- 1:30:15Speaker 3: when people come to the booth, those are the people
- 1:30:18Speaker 3: that I really love. The people that are like, oh,
- 1:30:19Speaker 3: I love the podcast. And I like that people watch
- 1:30:22Speaker 3: the show, of course, you know, the TV show. But.
- 1:30:24Speaker 3: But the passion for me is the podcast and that
- 1:30:27Speaker 3: they're so passionate about it. I love it. It's cool.
- 1:30:32Speaker 4: That's one of those things, the good with the bad.
- 1:30:34Speaker 4: Of all the weird new technology, it's like, I wouldn't
- 1:30:37Speaker 4: be able to do this without technology. So it's like
- 1:30:39Speaker 4: the fact that I discovered this weird little niche that
- 1:30:42Speaker 4: I kind of work, okay, I'm dysfunctional in every other
- 1:30:45Speaker 4: aspect of life. But in this world, I hit record
- 1:30:48Speaker 4: and I can put a show together.
- 1:30:50Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:30:51Speaker 4: I love being able to do that, and I love
- 1:30:53Speaker 4: that people that like it can find it. So it's
- 1:30:56Speaker 4: kind of awesome that the geeks like us, that this
- 1:31:00Speaker 4: is the thing we do, yammer on about movies and
- 1:31:02Speaker 4: comics and whatever it is we're into. It's like that
- 1:31:04Speaker 4: kind of works. Again, there's definitely good aspects to technology.
- 1:31:08Speaker 3: Yeah, it's not all bad.
- 1:31:11Speaker 4: You take the good with the bad and try to
- 1:31:12Speaker 4: not burn people alive.
- 1:31:14Speaker 3: Turn a blind eye to the safe space and trigger
- 1:31:16Speaker 3: bullshit so that you can podcast.
- 1:31:18Speaker 4: So that you can, yeah, find cool podcasts. So that's
- 1:31:20Speaker 4: really all we're looking for.
- 1:31:22Speaker 3: There you go.
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:31:23Speaker 4: Well, otherwise, that about does it. We will return next time.
- 1:31:25Speaker 4: Same geek feed. Thanks for listening.
- 1:31:27Speaker 3: Thank you. I've been breaking my balls. He's like, we
- 1:33:27Speaker 3: got a photo op in 10 minutes, you know.
- 1:33:30Speaker 4: Then I will let you get to that.
- 1:33:32Speaker 5: Anthony, Anthony.
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: Hey, this is who? What's up? The guy over there
- 1:33:34Speaker 2: just threw a candle in your face.
- 1:33:36Speaker 4: Holy shit, what do you mean?
- 1:33:37Speaker 2: What?
- 1:33:37Speaker 4: Yeah, that guy over there.
- 1:33:38Speaker 3: Hey!
- 1:33:39Speaker 4: You know what I'm talking about.
