- 2:21Speaker 3: also something I really haven't had a lot of opportunity

- 2:27Speaker 3: counties in West Virginia that were previously Democrats strongholds Fayette
- 2:31Speaker 3: County and here in Kanawa County have both flipped to
- 2:34Speaker 3: Republican And I want to talk about that a little

- 2:50Speaker 3: Reed is his name. He's a candidate for Congress and
- 2:52Speaker 3: he joined us right now, Chris, good morning, welcome to
- 2:54Speaker 3: the show.
- 2:55Speaker 5: Look, thanks for having.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Me, Thank you for being their district one right correct,
- 2:58Speaker 3: Southern Southern. Yeah, that's about It's it's a little bit
- 3:01Speaker 3: more easy now to figure out the districts because once,
- 3:05Speaker 3: I mean before it was very, very convoluted.
- 3:09Speaker 6: I think the farest I have to go was Franklin
- 3:12Speaker 6: up in Penalton. It's about three and a half hour drive.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Not Martinsburg like it was before that diagonal I mean
- 3:19Speaker 3: between Charleston and Martinsburg. But it's it's a a little
- 3:22Speaker 3: simple now. Tell us about Chris Reid.
- 3:24Speaker 6: I grew up on the west side of Charleston, went
- 3:26Speaker 6: out of district to George Washington. I went to school
- 3:30Speaker 6: with WU eventually graduated at West Virginia State. I moved
- 3:35Speaker 6: to the Washington, DC area, worked in restaurants and as
- 3:38Speaker 6: a bike messenger, and got involved in social activism, particularly
- 3:43Speaker 6: around the wars in Central America, anti apartheid activism, and
- 3:50Speaker 6: then I came back to Charleston and got my teaching certificate,
- 3:54Speaker 6: and I've been a teacher for the last twenty five years.
- 4:00Speaker 6: Just about everything under the sun at one point or another.
- 4:03Speaker 6: Most of the time I've spent with at risk youth
- 4:05Speaker 6: that that's the one area that I feel like I've
- 4:07Speaker 6: got quite a bit of experience with.
- 4:10Speaker 3: What is it about working with at risk youth that
- 4:12Speaker 3: appeals to you?
- 4:14Speaker 5: Well, it wasn't something I sought out in life. Has
- 4:17Speaker 5: just sort of Yeah, that's right. And I spent a
- 4:20Speaker 5: lot of.
- 4:20Speaker 6: Time at job Corps.
- 4:23Speaker 5: It seems to me.
- 4:26Speaker 6: That lots of times they've had the curiosity taken out
- 4:31Speaker 6: of them, whether it's impoverished background, their school is overburdened,
- 4:39Speaker 6: they don't have significant staffing, there's turnover of teachers, lack
- 4:44Speaker 6: a consistency, So when they come to job Corps, a
- 4:47Speaker 6: lot of them are thinking, well, this is my last chance.
- 4:50Speaker 6: So you know, lots of times they really feel that way.
- 4:55Speaker 3: So with all this experience that you've had, as you said,
- 4:57Speaker 3: you're at Charlest and Natives, spent time in d C
- 5:00Speaker 3: in the classroom, working with job Corps, various things, why
- 5:03Speaker 3: did you decide to run for Congress?
- 5:05Speaker 6: Well that's something I thought about doing when I came
- 5:07Speaker 6: back from d C in nineteen ninety, but I could
- 5:09Speaker 6: just never seem to get things move. And now that
- 5:14Speaker 6: I retired, my last job was at the Davids Child Shelter.
- 5:17Speaker 6: I left there back in February to run so I
- 5:21Speaker 6: just never really had it together. I had a son
- 5:23Speaker 6: and a wife, and you know, going back to d
- 5:27Speaker 6: C I don't think would have worked very well for
- 5:29Speaker 6: the family at the time.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Talking with Chris Reid again, who is a Democratic candidate
- 5:34Speaker 3: for Congress and district one of the Dave Island shill
- 5:36Speaker 3: in five eighty, Life brought to you in part by
- 5:38Speaker 3: Husband's Pizza. This month that your favorite Huston's order any
- 5:40Speaker 3: regularly priced large eighteen inch pizza and get a twole
- 5:43Speaker 3: there PEPSI had no additional charge. So tell us what
- 5:45Speaker 3: your basic platform is.
- 5:47Speaker 6: Well, I basically have I guess two things. I'm highly
- 5:54Speaker 6: critical of the current psychiatric industrial complex, industrial pharmaceutical complex.
- 6:02Speaker 6: A lot of these at risk kids are on psychiatric drugs,
- 6:05Speaker 6: and I think this sets them up for failure. I
- 6:08Speaker 6: don't think the outcomes that psychiatry says that they're you know,
- 6:13Speaker 6: getting a match up with the data. I'm also critical
- 6:19Speaker 6: of our foreign policy, bipartisan foreign policy establishment in DC.
- 6:24Speaker 6: So those are the two things I feel like I.
- 6:28Speaker 5: Know a good bit about.
- 6:29Speaker 6: I'm also a supporter of public education and higher education.
- 6:34Speaker 3: There has been a move Chris in Kanawa County and
- 6:38Speaker 3: other areas really around the country. But we talk about
- 6:40Speaker 3: it like we're a local show with people parents choosing
- 6:45Speaker 3: for one reason to another to explore sometimes a something
- 6:49Speaker 3: other than public schools, whether it's charter schools or whether
- 6:52Speaker 3: it's a private school or home schooling. Why do you
- 6:55Speaker 3: think that is?
- 6:57Speaker 6: Well, I think the school system is overburdened. Public schools
- 7:03Speaker 6: don't have the luxury of picking and choosing who their
- 7:06Speaker 6: students are. You know, there's quite a bit of of
- 7:10Speaker 6: a golf in academic attainment between say the parochial Catholic
- 7:17Speaker 6: schools in West Virginia, who produce merit scholarships like they're
- 7:23Speaker 6: you know, on assembly line or something, and then the
- 7:25Speaker 6: public schools, you know, they're the society's ills and such
- 7:32Speaker 6: fall heavily on the public schools. So it's understandable if
- 7:38Speaker 6: parents find that the school is not meeting their needs.
- 7:42Speaker 6: But I would tend to suggest that we keep our
- 7:47Speaker 6: funding for the public education because that's what's open to everybody.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Ken we can talk with Chris Reid, who is an
- 7:53Speaker 3: Demmocratic candidate for Congress and District one, Chris, you're running
- 7:56Speaker 3: against the incumbent Republican seat now, Carol Miller, and an
- 7:59Speaker 3: end pendant name west Holden. What makes you the better
- 8:03Speaker 3: candidate of those three?
- 8:05Speaker 5: Well, I think.
- 8:08Speaker 6: I ran into west down in McDowell County the other day,
- 8:11Speaker 6: and back when he was at Rockefeller, I showed up
- 8:14Speaker 6: his office one day. I had got laid off at
- 8:17Speaker 6: job corn. I stopped by his office and he took
- 8:19Speaker 6: me in, and.
- 8:20Speaker 5: You know, he's very professional.
- 8:22Speaker 6: I think if you look at the Ukraine War right
- 8:28Speaker 6: now and Wes Holden's position on the Ukraine War and
- 8:31Speaker 6: Carol Miller's position on the Ukraine War, there's not much difference.
- 8:35Speaker 6: I think we missed opportunities to avoid the war with negotiations,
- 8:40Speaker 6: and there's been a couple opportunities after the war started
- 8:43Speaker 6: to negotiated into it. But these opportunities were missed in Washington.
- 8:50Speaker 3: What would you have done differently if you were in Washington?
- 8:52Speaker 3: How would you have voted differently? Obviously you're part of
- 8:54Speaker 3: a larger body, But if you were there, what would
- 8:56Speaker 3: you have done differently?
- 8:57Speaker 6: Well, Unfortunately, because as a part of some politics, you
- 9:02Speaker 6: have a few Democrats who are willing to make an
- 9:06Speaker 6: issue over the situation in Gauza, and you have probably
- 9:11Speaker 6: a little bit more Republicans who are more than a
- 9:15Speaker 6: little skeptical about sending more money to Ukraine. So I'm
- 9:19Speaker 6: kind of like, you know, both of these people, both
- 9:22Speaker 6: of these groups are on the right track. I understand
- 9:26Speaker 6: why it's a parts of issue. I think that both
- 9:28Speaker 6: of the wars are something that we need to find
- 9:32Speaker 6: a way to wind down.
- 9:34Speaker 3: Let's talk about some things on the national front. Of course,
- 9:36Speaker 3: we just you know, two weeks ago, we had the
- 9:39Speaker 3: assassination attempt on former President Trump. Last week President Biden
- 9:44Speaker 3: announcing that he would be leaving the race, will continue
- 9:47Speaker 3: his term with Kamala Harris is going to be the
- 9:50Speaker 3: Democratic nominee. What is your take on either one of
- 9:54Speaker 3: those things, and what do you think about the rhetoric
- 9:56Speaker 3: where we are in America right now on both sides?
- 10:00Speaker 3: Two part question.
- 10:01Speaker 6: Well, I came back from my wife and I just
- 10:04Speaker 6: got back from a son's wedding in China. We stopped
- 10:06Speaker 6: back in Pittsburgh that we got back the morning of.
- 10:09Speaker 5: The assassination attempt.
- 10:11Speaker 6: So obviously that's got the country on jitters and they
- 10:15Speaker 6: fired this secret service person. So I don't know if
- 10:19Speaker 6: that's gonna help it out. What's the other question, Well,
- 10:21Speaker 6: we'll focus on that. I shouldn't have asked those at
- 10:23Speaker 6: the same time. Let's focus on that question.
- 10:25Speaker 3: First, your part, your your opinion of the of what
- 10:29Speaker 3: happened with Joe Biden basically saying he's not gonna run.
- 10:34Speaker 7: Uh.
- 10:34Speaker 3: And also the assassination attempt on Donald.
- 10:36Speaker 6: Trump, that's an assassination attempt was certainly, you know, unfortunate
- 10:41Speaker 6: and luckily didn't succeed. As far as the Democrats in Washington,
- 10:48Speaker 6: you know, they say they're worried about Trump overturning democracy,
- 10:54Speaker 6: but their actions here over the last week, I don't
- 10:57Speaker 6: know if they've got their story straight yet. And well,
- 11:00Speaker 6: at one point Biden wasn't going anywhere, there's no problem,
- 11:03Speaker 6: He's perfectly fine. And then he has a debate and
- 11:06Speaker 6: that goes south, and then all of a sudden, there's
- 11:09Speaker 6: a lot of chatter, and then, you know, one faction
- 11:12Speaker 6: says he's an ace on foreign policy. Other people are
- 11:17Speaker 6: trying to push him out the door. He still says
- 11:19Speaker 6: he's going nowhere. Sunday, he's gone Tuesday. Harris's predumptive nominee.
- 11:26Speaker 6: She hasn't won a single vote in a presidential contest.
- 11:30Speaker 6: She didn't win a single delegate in two thousand when
- 11:33Speaker 6: she twenty twenty when she ran for president. So this
- 11:37Speaker 6: is unprecedented in American history. The LBJ analogy doesn't work
- 11:43Speaker 6: because Humphrey actually went around to the state conventions around
- 11:47Speaker 6: the country and had, you know, I don't know, two
- 11:50Speaker 6: to three months of campaigning to do before the convention.
- 11:54Speaker 3: What about the rhetoric in America right now? It seems
- 11:56Speaker 3: that there's an awful lot of venom out there on
- 12:00Speaker 3: both sides. And we were at a point, in my opinion,
- 12:02Speaker 3: that we were at a point where we used to
- 12:04Speaker 3: be able to discuss things Republicans, Democrats, liberal conservatives. Now
- 12:09Speaker 3: it just doesn't seem like it's that way. What is
- 12:12Speaker 3: your opinion on this?
- 12:13Speaker 6: Well, by focusing on the forever wars that we keep
- 12:18Speaker 6: landing ourselves in that I don't find that's a part
- 12:21Speaker 6: of an issue. I think I can approach that issue
- 12:23Speaker 6: and speak to both sides of the issue. There are
- 12:26Speaker 6: still peace champions in the Democratic Party. There's Republicans who
- 12:32Speaker 6: voted for Trump in twenty sixteen because he said he
- 12:35Speaker 6: was going to wind down these forever wars. And it
- 12:41Speaker 6: didn't exactly happen, but so you know that I'm trying
- 12:45Speaker 6: to get a message that can hit both sides of
- 12:48Speaker 6: the aisle.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Let's talk about being a Democrat in West Virginia these days,
- 12:53Speaker 3: I said, I mentioned earlier that Knawa County has now
- 12:56Speaker 3: flipped Republican, Fayette County has now flipped on to get
- 12:59Speaker 3: into that story a little bit, like Ron talk about
- 13:01Speaker 3: the difficult, and I think you would agree it's somewhat
- 13:03Speaker 3: difficult to be a Democrat in West Virginia these days
- 13:06Speaker 3: because of the perception or so on and so forth.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Your thoughts on any of that.
- 13:12Speaker 6: Well, you look at the voter turnout and the election
- 13:17Speaker 6: I ran in.
- 13:18Speaker 5: And obviously that's obvious.
- 13:22Speaker 6: Derek Evans got thirty eight thousand votes and I got
- 13:24Speaker 6: twenty eight thousand votes.
- 13:26Speaker 5: So I can't win an.
- 13:28Speaker 6: Election just relying on the Democrats have voted in the primary.
- 13:33Speaker 6: So I have to be able to appeal to folks
- 13:36Speaker 6: that are either Republican used to be Democrat. I mean
- 13:39Speaker 6: for every person in West Virginia I met who said, well,
- 13:42Speaker 6: I used to be a Democrat, but the party left me.
- 13:45Speaker 5: You know i'd be a rich man.
- 13:47Speaker 3: You do hear that a lot, which is basically what
- 13:49Speaker 3: you heard with You've also heard that about some you know,
- 13:52Speaker 3: you've heard that on both sides. I mean that a
- 13:55Speaker 3: lot of people feeling that the parties have left them.
- 13:57Speaker 3: We'll give you thirty seconds, Chris, why should some one
- 14:00Speaker 3: vote for Chris Miller District one Democrat for Congress.
- 14:03Speaker 6: Well, somebody will stick to my guns, particularly on my
- 14:08Speaker 6: criticism of psychiatry and the foreign policy establishment. I'm not
- 14:13Speaker 6: looking for a long extended career into my eighties.
- 14:19Speaker 5: I'm retired. I'm not really a career. Just looking at this,
- 14:26Speaker 5: you know thing.
- 14:28Speaker 6: Maybe it's like some of the younger politicians and Acossio Cortes.
- 14:32Speaker 6: She comes in, you know, high flying, She's going to
- 14:35Speaker 6: change everything next thing.
- 14:36Speaker 5: You know, she's just right with the rest of the establishment.
- 14:41Speaker 3: Okay, do you have a website or anything Facebook or
- 14:44Speaker 3: how can people learn more about you?
- 14:45Speaker 6: You can find me at Chris bob Reid on Twitter
- 14:49Speaker 6: and for folks here locally.
- 14:50Speaker 5: In West Virginia.
- 14:52Speaker 6: I'm just at Chris read on Facebook and I have
- 14:56Speaker 6: my bike Messenger photo ID in my Facebook profile and
- 15:02Speaker 6: it says one hundredth Congress.

- 18:22Speaker 11: people start to get excited around this time of the year.
- 18:24Speaker 11: The team begins practice on Wednesday, and so it starts
- 18:27Speaker 11: to build up. And so this is kind of our
- 18:29Speaker 11: start to the sports year. And what I do is
- 18:33Speaker 11: I come down and kind of give an overview as
- 18:37Speaker 11: to what the expectations are, what are the storylines for football,
- 18:42Speaker 11: for basketball, and a few of the other WVU sports
- 18:47Speaker 11: and kind of get everyone you know, greased up and
- 18:50Speaker 11: a little bit of an insight as to what's going
- 18:52Speaker 11: on this year. I'll spend a good chunk of time
- 18:55Speaker 11: in addition to those topics on what's going on within
- 19:00Speaker 11: college sports. And for those that follow it closely, they
- 19:02Speaker 11: know that this past Friday there was a major announcement
- 19:07Speaker 11: through the settlement that's going on involving a class action
- 19:10Speaker 11: suit that really will change college sports as we know
- 19:14Speaker 11: them completely. This is the biggest change in the history
- 19:19Speaker 11: of college athletics, and that is going to usher in
- 19:23Speaker 11: a revenue sharing starting this time next year, where student
- 19:27Speaker 11: athletes will be paid significant numbers by the universities to
- 19:32Speaker 11: play their sport, and primarily it's football and basketball. But
- 19:36Speaker 11: it leads to a series of massive changes. And before
- 19:39Speaker 11: I do my whole deal and my whole speech, I
- 19:41Speaker 11: just kind of say that's one of the other topics
- 19:43Speaker 11: that we're going to go into. And all of this
- 19:45Speaker 11: is done as a fundraiser for the United Way of
- 19:49Speaker 11: Central West Virginia.
- 19:51Speaker 3: And you know, Tony, there have been so many changes
- 19:54Speaker 3: in the world of college athletics. You've been doing this
- 19:56Speaker 3: for a while. There have probably been more changes to
- 19:59Speaker 3: the landscape of college athletics in the past five six
- 20:02Speaker 3: years and there were in the previous one hundred, one
- 20:04Speaker 3: hundred and fifty. Would you agree with that?
- 20:07Speaker 11: Yeah, And I think you could even lessen the window, Dave,
- 20:09Speaker 11: you could probably even say within the last four years,
- 20:13Speaker 11: three years, because transfer portals, you know, was on was
- 20:18Speaker 11: one of the big moves. But I think it all
- 20:20Speaker 11: started with nil. Once that decision was made in the
- 20:23Speaker 11: Obannon case, which said that student athletes should be allowed
- 20:27Speaker 11: to generate money off of their name, their image, and
- 20:30Speaker 11: their likeness. That opened the door and from there everything
- 20:34Speaker 11: kind of went into full speed. And it's kind of
- 20:36Speaker 11: interesting in that, you know, West Virginia University athletes have
- 20:40Speaker 11: played prominent roles in some of these major landmark changes.
- 20:45Speaker 11: The first being former WV running back Sean Alston. That
- 20:49Speaker 11: became the Alston Case, and that was a class action
- 20:51Speaker 11: case which basically said that universities were not fully funding
- 20:56Speaker 11: student athletes that were on scholarship. That made a massive
- 20:59Speaker 11: change that led two dollars each year being presented to
- 21:04Speaker 11: student athletes. And then the other part of it was
- 21:06Speaker 11: this past fall into the Winner the Raekwon Battle decision
- 21:11Speaker 11: that came out of Judge John Bailey's court room of
- 21:13Speaker 11: the Northern Panhandle. That was a massive change that basically
- 21:18Speaker 11: said to the NCAA, no, you cannot limit a student
- 21:23Speaker 11: athlete's ability to transfer and gain immediate eligibility. And the
- 21:27Speaker 11: NCAA eventually just threw up its hands, didn't protest it,
- 21:32Speaker 11: didn't try to take it any further within the judicial system.
- 21:35Speaker 11: So we've got two landmark decisions that impact college athletes
- 21:39Speaker 11: across the country that came basically right out of a
- 21:42Speaker 11: WVU in essence involvement.
- 21:45Speaker 3: Remember when you used to come to events like this
- 21:47Speaker 3: and similar events around the state prior to football season
- 21:50Speaker 3: at all, you talked about was who the starting running
- 21:52Speaker 3: back was going to be.
- 21:55Speaker 11: Yes, those are the old days. This is and I
- 21:59Speaker 11: said this, I did want these in Parkersburg for the
- 22:01Speaker 11: Boys and Girls Club there on Saturday. I said, I'm
- 22:05Speaker 11: going to give you an overview on this. I'm not
- 22:07Speaker 11: going to go into the absolute weeds on it because
- 22:12Speaker 11: your eyes will glass over. Because still at the end
- 22:16Speaker 11: of the day, I think from a fan perspective, you know,
- 22:20Speaker 11: it's about watching the games. And I know that this
- 22:23Speaker 11: also will take some fans away from it. They'll they'll
- 22:26Speaker 11: kind of throw their hands up and say, I'm done
- 22:28Speaker 11: with this. It's become professional sports. And the reality of
- 22:31Speaker 11: it is it has. It has become professional sports. So
- 22:35Speaker 11: you have to have a new level of understanding or
- 22:40Speaker 11: acceptance of what this has become. But that's what it is.
- 22:44Speaker 11: And this is the This is the jump point and
- 22:48Speaker 11: a build up that has been happening really over the
- 22:51Speaker 11: last ten to fifteen years, when television dollars just became
- 22:57Speaker 11: so large that conferences took those dollars gave those back
- 23:00Speaker 11: to the schools. The schools then started to pay salaries
- 23:04Speaker 11: to coaches that were astronomical in comparison of what they
- 23:08Speaker 11: used to be. I mean, I'll give you a really
- 23:10Speaker 11: quick one.
- 23:10Speaker 5: Here.
- 23:11Speaker 11: Don Neel in his final year after twenty one years
- 23:14Speaker 11: at West Virginia, the winning this coach of all time,
- 23:17Speaker 11: undefeated twice, played for the national championship in eighty eight.
- 23:20Speaker 11: We know the story. And his very last year as
- 23:23Speaker 11: the all time winning this coach at West Virginia, he
- 23:25Speaker 11: made two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
- 23:27Speaker 5: That was.
- 23:28Speaker 11: That was two thousand and one. So now jumped forward,
- 23:32Speaker 11: you know, twenty three years later, and there are coaches,
- 23:37Speaker 11: there are there are defensive coordinators, There are coordinators that
- 23:40Speaker 11: are making over a million. These guys are getting bonuses
- 23:43Speaker 11: of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars and so everything
- 23:47Speaker 11: changed and eventually it's just natural human progression and human
- 23:52Speaker 11: you know, take wait a second. If these coaches are
- 23:54Speaker 11: making this money, the student athletes finally got their voice
- 23:58Speaker 11: heard and said we need to make some of that money.
- 24:00Speaker 11: And that's what it's going to be. And that's what's happening.
- 24:02Speaker 3: It's it's it's totally changed, for sure. The Dave Island
- 24:05Speaker 3: showing five AA Live Brown to Part by Morgan to Morgan,
- 24:07Speaker 3: America's largest injury law firm. Before we let you go,
- 24:09Speaker 3: I do want to talk about some actual things with
- 24:12Speaker 3: the Mountaineers on the field, not necessarily at the bank. Uh.
- 24:16Speaker 3: What's the most common question that you get from Mountaineer
- 24:19Speaker 3: fans when you're out at about you mentioned you did
- 24:21Speaker 3: an event at Parkersburg? What? What if the on the
- 24:24Speaker 3: field stuff, Tony? What are people talking about with the
- 24:26Speaker 3: Mountaineers heading into the twenty twenty four fall campaign.
- 24:30Speaker 11: If it's the same question they've asked for the last
- 24:33Speaker 11: start of every football season, how many games are we
- 24:35Speaker 11: going to win? Into which, into which I always reply, well,
- 24:40Speaker 11: it depends, it all. It all varies on a bunch
- 24:43Speaker 11: of different things. But here's what I here's my theme
- 24:48Speaker 11: and my belief going into this season that now, after
- 24:53Speaker 11: five full years at West Virginia, Neil Brown has finally
- 24:58Speaker 11: reached the point where the cupboard is now at the
- 25:02Speaker 11: level that it needs to be to cook the recipe
- 25:05Speaker 11: that he needs to cook. He inherited a program that
- 25:08Speaker 11: from a roster perspective and talent standpoint, was just absolutely
- 25:14Speaker 11: at a at a base minimum level. And that's just
- 25:17Speaker 11: not a generalized statement. I mean that's a fact and
- 25:20Speaker 11: the fact is that he inherited one NFL player on
- 25:24Speaker 11: his roster, and every coach from Don Neil and on
- 25:28Speaker 11: out that had preceded him had had at least a
- 25:31Speaker 11: minimum of eight players that would eventually go to play
- 25:33Speaker 11: in the NFL. So when he got here, he had
- 25:35Speaker 11: a start from scratch, throwing COVID, throwing the transfer portal,
- 25:38Speaker 11: throwing West Virginia not being quick to respond to nil,
- 25:44Speaker 11: and it caused for several seasons of just kind of swimming.
- 25:48Speaker 11: And now we're at a point where I think every
- 25:51Speaker 11: single Saturday on this schedule that we will be able
- 25:54Speaker 11: to go in and we will be able to compete. Now,
- 25:56Speaker 11: does that mean you're going to win? Don't know. That's
- 25:59Speaker 11: going to come down now to turn and overs and
- 26:00Speaker 11: fumbles and interceptions and injuries and who gets hurt when
- 26:04Speaker 11: they get hurt and what player gets hurt. So at
- 26:07Speaker 11: least though, we're at a point where we can compete,
- 26:10Speaker 11: and we'll go from there and see what eventually that means.
- 26:13Speaker 3: Got a couple of quick questions via the text line
- 26:15Speaker 3: for you. One of those says, have you seen Tony
- 26:17Speaker 3: online chatter that there's a possibility that our two pats
- 26:21Speaker 3: white and McAfee are considering returning to Mountain your field
- 26:24Speaker 3: for the Penn State game? Is there any truth to
- 26:26Speaker 3: that that you know of? According to a texture, No.
- 26:30Speaker 11: That won't happen as far as Pat McAfee goes, because
- 26:33Speaker 11: he has recommitted to College game Day and College game
- 26:37Speaker 11: Day isn't going to be in Morgantown on that first Saturday.
- 26:40Speaker 11: It's going to be a Fox game, So Pat McAfee
- 26:42Speaker 11: definitely won't be.
- 26:43Speaker 3: Another question is are the student athletes still going to
- 26:46Speaker 3: get free ride scholarships?
- 26:48Speaker 11: Yes, scholarship is still part of the deal. It does
- 26:51Speaker 11: not include that does not even go into the revenue
- 26:54Speaker 11: sharing dollars that they're going to get. And again, I
- 26:56Speaker 11: didn't want to glass your eyes over, but scholarships scholarship
- 27:00Speaker 11: limits based upon what the settlement or the papers that
- 27:05Speaker 11: were filed to court on Friday. Starting next year, scholarship
- 27:10Speaker 11: limits are no longer in existence. Now you'll have a
- 27:14Speaker 11: roster number of players that you can have. So in
- 27:17Speaker 11: football at the level that West Virginia plays, it's been
- 27:20Speaker 11: eighty five scholarships. Starting next Junior July one, a school
- 27:24Speaker 11: can have up to one hundred and five players on
- 27:27Speaker 11: their roster. What it could do is it could extinct
- 27:31Speaker 11: walk ons. And these are all the details that are
- 27:34Speaker 11: now trying to be figured out. But roster sizes are
- 27:38Speaker 11: the new norm, and scholarship limits no longer exist because
- 27:43Speaker 11: of these, because of the legal challenges that have been
- 27:46Speaker 11: put to the court.
- 27:47Speaker 3: And if you want answers to any more of these questions,
- 27:50Speaker 3: be sure and join Tony and on all of us
- 27:51Speaker 3: will be there on Thursday night over to bal Toyota
- 27:54Speaker 3: of Vincenter. And this is again a fundraiser for the
- 27:57Speaker 3: United Way of Central West Virginia. What's the best way
- 27:59Speaker 3: to get tickets?
- 27:59Speaker 11: Tony, that's a good question. I would say just basically
- 28:03Speaker 11: Margaret Ann and the gang at the United Way of
- 28:05Speaker 11: Central West Virginia. I would just reach out to that,
- 28:08Speaker 11: look them up and they'll be able to take care of.
- 28:10Speaker 3: You all right, Tony, best of luck Thursday night. I'll
- 28:13Speaker 3: be there, and I know Weekly and Kop I think
- 28:14Speaker 3: we're all going to be there Thursday, and I'm looking
- 28:16Speaker 3: forward to seeing you again. One quick thing, how is
- 28:20Speaker 3: three guys going? We got to ask you that.
- 28:22Speaker 11: It's going well. It's getting ready to have its birthday.
- 28:25Speaker 11: So August of seventeen is when we started, and so
- 28:30Speaker 11: we're getting ready for birthday eight tomorrow we're going to
- 28:33Speaker 11: I think it's tomorrow, Tuesday, Yeah, tomorrow. We'll release a
- 28:37Speaker 11: really good episode with Garrett Green the day before Mountaineer
- 28:40Speaker 11: practice starts. So everything's going well. We're five hundred and
- 28:43Speaker 11: sixty some episodes in and it's been a lot of fun.
- 28:46Speaker 3: All right, Tony, appreciate you taking time out of your
- 28:49Speaker 3: schedule to be Here'll see you a Thursday night, man,
- 28:50Speaker 3: Thanks a lot.
- 28:52Speaker 11: Thank you, Dave, appreciate it.

- 29:05Speaker 3: a lot of time on sports here because I could
- 29:06Speaker 3: spend a whole heck of a lot of time talking sports.
- 29:08Speaker 3: But it is amazing, as I pointed out to Tony,
- 29:12Speaker 3: and I'll say this and I'll get off the sports thing.
- 29:14Speaker 3: As Tony said, the amount of changes in the world
- 29:18Speaker 3: of college athletics. I said in the last you know,
- 29:21Speaker 3: five to ten years, and he says it wasn't even
- 29:25Speaker 3: that long. I mean, I can remember. I'm old, and
- 29:28Speaker 3: I can remember. I can remember a famous story and
- 29:33Speaker 3: had to do with Chris Webber of that awesome Michigan
- 29:36Speaker 3: basketball team in the early nineteen nineties. Chris Webber talked
- 29:39Speaker 3: about going to a McDonald's, either on campus or somewhere
- 29:43Speaker 3: near campus, and trying to scrape up enough money to
- 29:48Speaker 3: buy a happy meal. In the meantime, he saw his jersey,
- 29:52Speaker 3: which I believe was number four. He had his number
- 29:55Speaker 3: four jersey was selling in the Michigan bookstore for like
- 30:00Speaker 3: one hundred bucks. And it wasn't autographed or anything. And
- 30:04Speaker 3: that's when, and again we're talking to the early nineties here,
- 30:06Speaker 3: that's when he said, Okay, there's something wrong here. They're
- 30:10Speaker 3: selling my number. It may not have my name on it,
- 30:13Speaker 3: but everybody knew who wore that number. They're selling my
- 30:17Speaker 3: number and I'm not getting anything for it, and somebody is.
- 30:20Speaker 3: And so I think there's got to be In my opinion,
- 30:23Speaker 3: I think there has to be a line drawn somewhere.
- 30:26Speaker 3: But I don't. I don't think it's going to change.
- 30:28Speaker 3: And as a college football fan, as I am following
- 30:32Speaker 3: closely Marshall which is where I went to school, plus
- 30:36Speaker 3: WVU and Georgia. You know, I'm a big Georgia fan.
- 30:38Speaker 3: Two following those teams and trying to figure out year
- 30:42Speaker 3: to year who is going to be playing for them.
- 30:45Speaker 3: The old saying goes in baseball, they used to say
- 30:48Speaker 3: when it was talk program. So you have to have
- 30:49Speaker 3: a program. How do you tell who the players are
- 30:52Speaker 3: if you don't have a program. That's pretty much the
- 30:54Speaker 3: way it is in college athletics right now with the
- 30:56Speaker 3: transfer rule, and it's not going to change. And now
- 31:01Speaker 3: basically college sports has become the NFL, it's become the NBA,
- 31:04Speaker 3: it's become Major League Baseball even more so, even more so,
- 31:09Speaker 3: and more power to these athletes, and I you know,
- 31:12Speaker 3: applaud them, think that they were crapped on for a
- 31:16Speaker 3: number of years. But now we've kind of gone in
- 31:19Speaker 3: the opposite direction. So and it's leaving a lot of
- 31:23Speaker 3: college football and college basketball fans kind of cold, to
- 31:26Speaker 3: be honest with you, But there's some you know, they're
- 31:28Speaker 3: no matter what, they're still going to show up on
- 31:30Speaker 3: Saturday at the games to tailgate, or they're going to
- 31:32Speaker 3: park in front of their TV and watch it. So

- 35:13Speaker 3: just saying, is gonna be a little bit different? But yeah,
- 35:15Speaker 3: I don't know. I don't know all the details. I
- 35:17Speaker 3: just saw the headline during the break there. Trump to
- 35:19Speaker 3: return to Butler, Pennsylvania. Texas, Dave, what's a oh sorry,
- 35:24Speaker 3: wait a minute, hold on, I'm not ready for that one.
- 35:25Speaker 3: I'll get to that one, I promise you. Texas Dave
- 35:28Speaker 3: Logan High School, your alma mater, has been a pioneer
- 35:31Speaker 3: at paying their players. Way before nil deals were thought of.
- 35:36Speaker 3: No comment, no comment on that now, I don't I
- 35:39Speaker 3: don't know that we paid players. We well, you know,
- 35:44Speaker 3: I'm going to leave it alone. The stories are there,
- 35:46Speaker 3: but we kind of pioneered some things down there going
- 35:50Speaker 3: back as to the nineteen sixties and seventies that other
- 35:54Speaker 3: other schools now now do. And I'll just I'll leave
- 35:57Speaker 3: it at that. Dave Wilson is in the Big Share

- 36:02Speaker 3: Charles to mayor Danny Jones will be on the show today.

- 37:30Speaker 3: Let me get to that text that I started to read.
- 37:36Speaker 3: I kind of got ahead of myself. Texas Dave, what
- 37:38Speaker 3: is the penalty for candidates that have still still have
- 37:41Speaker 3: campaign signs up? Earl Whittington, who lost his race, still
- 37:45Speaker 3: has three large signs from more corcol between Saint Albans
- 37:47Speaker 3: and spring Hill. They're really as best I know, there
- 37:52Speaker 3: really is no penalty for that. I mean, I've seen
- 37:57Speaker 3: signs as I travel a lot and a lot through
- 38:00Speaker 3: West Virginia, you see signs of candidates that ran like
- 38:03Speaker 3: ten years ago that are still up. I mean, the
- 38:05Speaker 3: right thing to do, and many candidates have started doing this,
- 38:09Speaker 3: many have done it for a number of years, is
- 38:11Speaker 3: to get those signs down the night of the election.
- 38:13Speaker 3: Matter of fact something it's almost become like a game
- 38:17Speaker 3: now who can get their signs down more quickly? And
- 38:20Speaker 3: this passed election. In the primary election, Chris Lawrence and
- 38:23Speaker 3: I were of course running, you know, we were in
- 38:24Speaker 3: the studio here and trying to get a hold of candidates,
- 38:28Speaker 3: and a few of them we had difficulty to get
- 38:30Speaker 3: in a hold of to talk about their victory or
- 38:32Speaker 3: their loss or whatever, because they were out picking up
- 38:35Speaker 3: a campaign signs and I hope what happened Doug scaff
- 38:39Speaker 3: when he got bit by a snake does not, you know,
- 38:42Speaker 3: keep people from wanting to pick up their signs. But no,
- 38:44Speaker 3: an answer to the Textras question, I don't know that
- 38:46Speaker 3: there is an actual penalty for that, but it's the
- 38:51Speaker 3: right thing to do. So no matter who the candidate is,
- 38:54Speaker 3: let's try to get those signs down, all right, Texas day,
- 39:00Speaker 3: they've kind kind of tired of hearing the both sides crap.
- 39:04Speaker 3: Conservatives haven't wished anyone dead, killed or assassinated or blown
- 39:09Speaker 3: up the White House. That was Madonna, by the way,
- 39:11Speaker 3: says a texture or resort to physically assaulting someone that
- 39:15Speaker 3: does not or refuses to agree lockstep with their view opinions,
- 39:19Speaker 3: or rhetoric, and not be arrested for any of it.
- 39:22Speaker 3: So enough with the both sides, b s says a
- 39:26Speaker 3: texture saying both sides is another way of what Hoppy
- 39:31Speaker 3: calls what about ism, says a text tex says. Trump
- 39:36Speaker 3: is returning to Butler County for a rally to honor
- 39:40Speaker 3: the man Corey, who was shot and killed during his
- 39:43Speaker 3: July thirteenth rally in Butler, Butler Township on the Butler
- 39:47Speaker 3: Farm showgrounds and the two men were injured. Okay, I
- 39:48Speaker 3: didn't know that. Like I said, I just saw the
- 39:51Speaker 3: headline on the TV and he was returning there. So
- 39:53Speaker 3: he is returning to honor the man, the firefighter that bravely.
- 39:58Speaker 3: I don't care what your political pursuit, and nobody would
- 40:00Speaker 3: say that that guy wasn't a hero for protecting his family.
- 40:04Speaker 3: Coming up on tomorrow's show, Republican Strategist Greg Thomas will
- 40:07Speaker 3: be stopping by lots in the news lately about the
- 40:10Speaker 3: KRT bus system in the Canal vut We're going to
- 40:12Speaker 3: talk to director Sean Hill about that. As I mentioned,
- 40:15Speaker 3: the folks from JUTE Home and Business Security Systems will
- 40:18Speaker 3: be here to answer your questions about home security and
- 40:23Speaker 3: business security. It's coming up with JUTE on the show tomorrow.
- 40:26Speaker 3: So I had some people asked me if I was
- 40:29Speaker 3: going to delve into the controversy surrounding the opening ceremonies
- 40:33Speaker 3: from the Paris Olympic Games. You know, it dominated social
- 40:37Speaker 3: media all weekend and by the way, let me say
- 40:39Speaker 3: about the weekend news cycle, it was actually pretty refreshing.
- 40:44Speaker 3: Not I mean this was there were some major stories.
- 40:46Speaker 3: Don't get me wrong. But you know, two weeks ago
- 40:48Speaker 3: we had the former president an assassination attempt. Last week
- 40:53Speaker 3: was the is he going to stay in?
- 40:54Speaker 14: Is he not?
- 40:55Speaker 3: And then we put Joe Mansion in there, and then
- 40:57Speaker 3: Biden eventually decided he wasn't going to run. And so
- 41:01Speaker 3: it was kind of a slow news weekend compared to
- 41:03Speaker 3: what it's been the last two weekends. But anyway, this
- 41:06Speaker 3: thing with the ceremonies from the Paris Olympic Games, you know,
- 41:08Speaker 3: it dominated social media all weekend with opinions all over
- 41:12Speaker 3: the board. It was blasphemous, it was arts, YadA, YadA, YadA.
- 41:17Speaker 3: And I'm going to go into full confession mode here
- 41:21Speaker 3: and I know this may make me the worst American ever,
- 41:24Speaker 3: but here it goes. I couldn't care less about the Olympics.
- 41:29Speaker 3: I'm just saying.
- 41:31Speaker 14: So.
- 41:32Speaker 3: I know, I know, turn in your red, white, and blue.
- 41:34Speaker 3: Probably don't like apple pie either, But actually I do
- 41:37Speaker 3: love apple pie. But I was not watching the opening
- 41:42Speaker 3: ceremonies or any of it, and probably won't. It's just
- 41:47Speaker 3: not my thing. It never has been. I've just never
- 41:49Speaker 3: been into the Olympics. I know, it's where's your pride?
- 41:52Speaker 2: And so on?
- 41:52Speaker 3: Well, I just this is not my thing.
- 41:53Speaker 14: It never never was.
- 41:55Speaker 3: I mean, you probably count on a fifteen second stopwatch
- 41:58Speaker 3: or fifteen minutes stop watching out of Olympics. I've watched
- 42:01Speaker 3: in my entire life. But it's just not my thing.
- 42:03Speaker 3: So I knew what was coming on Saturday or a
- 42:05Speaker 3: Friday night, rather didn't. My wife and I watching something else,
- 42:09Speaker 3: did not turn it on. But I woke up Saturday
- 42:11Speaker 3: morning with everyone losing their collective minds over it one
- 42:16Speaker 3: way or the other. And if you want to weigh
- 42:19Speaker 3: in on it, text me or call me, that's fine.
- 42:22Speaker 3: But again I didn't watch it, and I didn't really
- 42:24Speaker 3: even care to go back and watch to see what
- 42:27Speaker 3: the controversy was. I read a lot about it, but
- 42:30Speaker 3: as far as I going back and watching it, I
- 42:35Speaker 3: will say this though, based on what I read but
- 42:41Speaker 3: didn't see, it's their country, and it's their belief system,
- 42:48Speaker 3: and they can pretty much do what they want. And
- 42:51Speaker 3: I'm sure that in fact, in this country, as much
- 42:55Speaker 3: as I love my country, we do things daily in
- 42:57Speaker 3: this country that offend other countries. So that's just kind
- 43:01Speaker 3: of where I am on that, And you can weigh
- 43:04Speaker 3: in on it if you want, send me a text
- 43:06Speaker 3: or whatever.
- 43:06Speaker 2: But I.
- 43:08Speaker 3: Yeah, it's not really much concerned to me. But if
- 43:12Speaker 3: it is to you, let me know. Dave Allen showing

- 47:09Speaker 3: start calling Doug scaff snake or Doug the snake scaff
- 47:14Speaker 3: I think Doug scaff has probably heard all of those jokes.
- 47:16Speaker 3: He's actually joked about the jokes when he's been on
- 47:18Speaker 3: my show in the past. All Right, So Hoppy got
- 47:21Speaker 3: into this a little bit last week, and I just
- 47:25Speaker 3: kind of glazed over it. But this flip in voter
- 47:28Speaker 3: registration from Democrat to Republican in two counties that were
- 47:35Speaker 3: in the past Democrat strongholds. Talking about Fayette County and
- 47:39Speaker 3: where we set right now, Kanawa Counties, and it is
- 47:44Speaker 3: it's truly astounding. But I just want to focus on
- 47:48Speaker 3: Kanawha County right now and and how historic this is.
- 47:53Speaker 3: There are now more Republicans than Democrats in Kanawha County.
- 47:59Speaker 3: The numbers forty two thousand, three hundred and fourteen Republicans
- 48:04Speaker 3: forty two two hundred and fifty one registered Dems. Now,
- 48:07Speaker 3: that's not a whole lot, but that number, in my opinion,
- 48:13Speaker 3: and I think others there were a lot smarter than
- 48:16Speaker 3: I am, would say that number is probably going to grow.
- 48:19Speaker 3: But it is also worth noting that the number of
- 48:22Speaker 3: those registering unaffiliated is also rising. And when you see
- 48:29Speaker 3: what is going on with both parties nationally, with the
- 48:35Speaker 3: extremes taking over extreme left extreme right. You can see
- 48:39Speaker 3: why that is. Now that's just an editorial comment.
- 48:43Speaker 8: On my part.
- 48:44Speaker 3: Now, Jeff Jenkins has a story posted about this at
- 48:47Speaker 3: wv metronews dot com. Is actually posted last Thursday when
- 48:51Speaker 3: the news of this started to come out, So if
- 48:53Speaker 3: you want to go back into the archives you can
- 48:56Speaker 3: you can check that out. I know he had hop
- 48:59Speaker 3: He had graves On, who is the chair of the
- 49:02Speaker 3: Republican Party in Kanawha County. Also Republican Party chair Matt
- 49:05Speaker 3: Herridge was on with Hopey last week talking about it.
- 49:09Speaker 3: Forty four of West Virginia's fifty five counties are now
- 49:15Speaker 3: Republican counties, and Matt Harridge as do. I believe that
- 49:22Speaker 3: many others do too. Those numbers are going to continue
- 49:26Speaker 3: to rise with people leaving the Democrat Party for the
- 49:29Speaker 3: Republican Party. Now again, some are leaving the Democrat Party,
- 49:33Speaker 3: maybe some are leaving the Republican Party two to go
- 49:35Speaker 3: independent or unaffiliated. But that's the biggest shift that we're
- 49:39Speaker 3: seeing right now, is that people are leaving the Democrat
- 49:42Speaker 3: Party in droves. And I'm not saying anything. I have
- 49:45Speaker 3: Mike Pushkin on the show Republican or I'm sorry Oh
- 49:48Speaker 3: my god, he's gonna kill me. Democrat party chair on
- 49:50Speaker 3: the show, and he admits that there there's a major problem.
- 49:55Speaker 3: And there is a perspective that was pointed out in
- 50:00Speaker 3: in Jeff's story that I think is really interesting. Two
- 50:03Speaker 3: years ago, two short years ago, Democrats outnumbered Republicans in
- 50:10Speaker 3: Kanawa County by forty five hundred. That was two years ago.
- 50:17Speaker 3: Let that sink in for a moment. Now, you want
- 50:21Speaker 3: to go back a little further statewide, this is statewide Now,
- 50:25Speaker 3: heading into the twenty sixteen primary, Democrats had a one
- 50:31Speaker 3: hundred eighty eight thousand, seven hundred vote voter advantage over Republicans.
- 50:39Speaker 3: That's heading into the primary of twenty sixteen. And now
- 50:45Speaker 3: the numbers again, Republicans are up in West Virginia overall
- 50:49Speaker 3: by one hundred and twenty six thousand and five hundred
- 50:53Speaker 3: and eighty two. And let me go back a little
- 50:58Speaker 3: bit further from a historical perspective, Let's go all the
- 51:06Speaker 3: way back to nineteen ninety five. Nineteen ninety five, in
- 51:09Speaker 3: West Virginia, Democrats were up by three hundred and forty
- 51:13Speaker 3: nine thousand. There were three hundred forty nine thousand more
- 51:17Speaker 3: Democrats than Republicans in West Virginia in nineteen ninety five.
- 51:26Speaker 3: So I guess you know a question that begs and
- 51:30Speaker 3: we'll have to kind of carry this over maybe to
- 51:32Speaker 3: tomorrow's show, and of course Greg Thomas, Republican strategist, is
- 51:34Speaker 3: on the show tomorrow. Is why is everybody changing parties?
- 51:39Speaker 3: Why is? Why are is it?
- 51:42Speaker 14: Do you?
- 51:43Speaker 3: I mean it can't. This trend actually started before the
- 51:50Speaker 3: current folks were in charge. I mean this, we're starting
- 51:53Speaker 3: to see this even before Trump. But it's certainly put
- 51:57Speaker 3: the exclamation point after Donald Trump. But Dave island own five.
