- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your guide to
- 0:04Speaker 1: the White Tail Woods, presented by first Light, creating proven
- 0:08Speaker 1: versatile hunting apparel for the stand, saddle or blind. First Light,
- 0:13Speaker 1: Go Farther, stay Longer, and now your host, Mark Kenyon,
- 0:19Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired.
- 0:21Speaker 2: To Hunt podcast. This week in the show we are
- 0:24Speaker 2: starting are what would You Do? Series again, in which
- 0:28Speaker 2: we walk a hunter through a series of hypothetical, challenging
- 0:32Speaker 2: hunting scenarios to see exactly how they.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Would handle them.
- 0:36Speaker 2: And today's guest is Ted Zangerley of the Hunting Public.
- 0:45Speaker 2: All right, welcome back to the Wired to Hunt podcast,
- 0:48Speaker 2: brought to you by First Light and their Camera for
- 0:51Speaker 2: Conservation Initiative.
- 0:53Speaker 3: And it is that time of year again.
- 0:55Speaker 2: August has arrived and as we have done for I
- 0:58Speaker 2: think five years now, every August, we kick off are
- 1:02Speaker 2: what would you Do? Series, in which I run a
- 1:07Speaker 2: great deer hunter through a series of hypothetical, difficult, challenging, frustrating,
- 1:14Speaker 2: confusing hunting scenarios, give them very specific hypothetical situations to
- 1:19Speaker 2: see how they would handle them, how they would think
- 1:22Speaker 2: through them, what their decision making processes and everything in between.
- 1:26Speaker 2: So that's what we're doing here today, and we're kicking
- 1:28Speaker 2: it off with a great first guest, Ted Zangerly from
- 1:31Speaker 2: the hunting public.
- 1:33Speaker 3: He is a die hard deer hunter.
- 1:35Speaker 2: He has had success and experience all across the country,
- 1:39Speaker 2: oftentimes hunting brand new places, hunting public heavily pressured tough spots,
- 1:45Speaker 2: and getting the job done. So Ted has a lot
- 1:48Speaker 2: to share here, an interesting perspective, I think, in something
- 1:51Speaker 2: that all of us can learn from, whether we're hunting
- 1:54Speaker 2: you know, big pieces of public land or our own
- 1:56Speaker 2: back forty or something in between. Lots of good stuff,
- 2:00Speaker 2: very actionable information. So two very quick housekeeping things before
- 2:05Speaker 2: we get to my chat with Ted. Number one, if
- 2:07Speaker 2: you have not heard, we have a totally new limited
- 2:10Speaker 2: run podcast series on the Wired hunt feed. It's called
- 2:14Speaker 2: the Back forty Podcast is hosted by my friend Jake Hoefer,
- 2:17Speaker 2: and each one of those episodes he asks one specific
- 2:22Speaker 2: burning question to eight different expert guests.
- 2:26Speaker 3: So it's a very.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Interesting format, really interesting people that share their perspectives. Definitely
- 2:31Speaker 2: go check that out. The first two episodes should be
- 2:34Speaker 2: out by now if you're listening to this here at
- 2:36Speaker 2: the beginning of August.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Twenty twenty five. Point Number two, this hat.
- 2:40Speaker 2: The new Wired to Hunt vintage whitetail hat is quickly selling.
- 2:45Speaker 2: I was over at the I said this last week,
- 2:48Speaker 2: but I'll say it again. Was at the Mediator's store
- 2:50Speaker 2: the other day. They are already out of them. So
- 2:52Speaker 2: if you want to grab this hat, go to the
- 2:54Speaker 2: mediator dot com, go to the.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Store page, check it out. I appreciate you repping this.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Appreciate you so porting the podcast and making sure that
- 3:04Speaker 2: that Wired to Hunt flag is flying strong. So without
- 3:08Speaker 2: further ado, let's get to the what would you Do
- 3:12Speaker 2: Gauntlet with Ted Zangery.
- 3:19Speaker 3: All Right, welcome to the show.
- 3:21Speaker 4: Ted, Hey, thanks for having me.
- 3:24Speaker 2: I'm excited for this one because, well, for two reasons.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Number one, this is our first what would you Do
- 3:31Speaker 2: episode of the year, and we've been doing these for
- 3:34Speaker 2: maybe five years now, and it kind of symbolizes like
- 3:39Speaker 2: the real kickoff of like hunting seasons coming soon. August
- 3:43Speaker 2: is here, the full blown ramp up is an effect,
- 3:46Speaker 2: So it's exciting from that perspective.
- 3:49Speaker 3: And then number two, it's.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Exciting because while you have been on the Wired Hunt podcast,
- 3:54Speaker 2: it was with my buddy Tony and not me, So
- 3:56Speaker 2: this is our first time getting to do a show together.
- 3:58Speaker 2: So I'm excited we get to chat. I appreciate you
- 4:00Speaker 2: coming out here do this.
- 4:01Speaker 5: Yeah, for sure, this would be good to get the
- 4:03Speaker 5: mindset back into rolling back into deer hunting.
- 4:06Speaker 4: So getting ready to get into it exactly.
- 4:09Speaker 2: And so you know what the format is that the
- 4:11Speaker 2: plan here is that I'm just gonna throw you in
- 4:14Speaker 2: the fire. I'm going to toss out a bunch of specific,
- 4:18Speaker 2: you know, sometimes challenging, sometimes frustrating, sometimes cool scenarios, and
- 4:24Speaker 2: I'm hoping you can kind of walk me through what
- 4:27Speaker 2: your mindset would be, how you would approach this challenge,
- 4:29Speaker 2: what you would be thinking about, what you would do,
- 4:31Speaker 2: how you would handle it. It just seems like oftentimes
- 4:35Speaker 2: when we have these very specific scenarios and we hear
- 4:39Speaker 2: how people would kind of go through this, it makes
- 4:42Speaker 2: it makes the kind of learning opportunities really really pop.
- 4:46Speaker 2: So so that's the point, are you ready to run
- 4:49Speaker 2: through the gauntlet. We're just gonna get right into it.
- 4:51Speaker 2: I think that sounds good to me.
- 4:54Speaker 3: All right.
- 4:54Speaker 2: So here's one that I think is kind of in
- 4:57Speaker 2: your wheelhouse. You guys have like a kind of a
- 5:00Speaker 2: version of this many times given the hunting style on
- 5:03Speaker 2: the way you guys spend your year. So imagine that
- 5:06Speaker 2: this year you are gonna hunt Ohio. You've got in
- 5:08Speaker 2: Ohio tag, you are tentatively planning on going there for
- 5:12Speaker 2: a November hunt. But you've never been to this place before,
- 5:16Speaker 2: never hunted it, never scouted it, never set foot there,
- 5:20Speaker 2: and it is a piece of public land that's pretty big,
- 5:23Speaker 2: pretty big piece of public You are going to get
- 5:27Speaker 2: to have one day of scouting in the summer. Let's
- 5:30Speaker 2: say sometime this month, in August, you're able to carve
- 5:33Speaker 2: out one single day to scout it before your November hunt.
- 5:37Speaker 2: How exactly would you best use that kind of twelve
- 5:40Speaker 2: hours on the ground. Let's call it August twenty fifth
- 5:43Speaker 2: you're going to go, So you have August twenty fifth,
- 5:45Speaker 2: You've got twelve hours of daylight.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Let's say, how do you spend that one day?
- 5:50Speaker 5: Yeah, I'd probably obviously beforehand, I do a bunch of
- 5:55Speaker 5: scouting on the map out there, looking at a bunch
- 5:58Speaker 5: of different stuff, looking at all the access points, all
- 6:02Speaker 5: the roads, whatever it may be. And honestly i'd probably
- 6:08Speaker 5: look at where we turkey on it a lot, because
- 6:12Speaker 5: we turkey on it out there a couple of years ago,
- 6:15Speaker 5: and I remember seeing like a bunch of deer during
- 6:18Speaker 5: the evenings. So I'd be thinking about all those past
- 6:22Speaker 5: experiences and all that and get out there, probably do
- 6:27Speaker 5: a bunch of driving, looking around at stuff, looking at
- 6:30Speaker 5: the fields, looking at all the trails and stuff like that,
- 6:35Speaker 5: and then just dive in there. And one thing that
- 6:39Speaker 5: I am trying to get better at in my scouting
- 6:45Speaker 5: is picking out like specific setups when I go in
- 6:48Speaker 5: in the summertime. And if I can do that a
- 6:52Speaker 5: little bit better going forward, I think that would help
- 6:56Speaker 5: me out a lot. So I think a lot of
- 6:57Speaker 5: times I'll go into an area scout, but I won't
- 7:01Speaker 5: like really narrow down on stuff, especially in the summertime.
- 7:04Speaker 4: I'll kind of look at it real broad.
- 7:07Speaker 5: And so that's one thing that I want to try
- 7:09Speaker 5: and get better at, is like looking narrowing down my
- 7:14Speaker 5: focus on like one specific spot and then picking out
- 7:18Speaker 5: a specific tree and saying, all right, on this wind,
- 7:23Speaker 5: this type of condition, day I would come in, this
- 7:26Speaker 5: is how I would get in there and pick that
- 7:29Speaker 5: tree and just have a route planned out to get
- 7:31Speaker 5: in there and hunt it.
- 7:34Speaker 3: So given that you only have one day, but you're
- 7:37Speaker 3: coming back for you know, a week or so in November.
- 7:40Speaker 2: How many spots like that would you try to have?
- 7:43Speaker 2: Would do you think you go into the day like,
- 7:45Speaker 2: all right, I need to pick out X number or
- 7:47Speaker 2: is it just going to be Oh, if I come
- 7:49Speaker 2: across you know, a banger, then I'm gonna fully think
- 7:52Speaker 2: it through like you just did, Like how would you
- 7:54Speaker 2: think about that?
- 7:56Speaker 5: I'd try and find as many as I could, But
- 7:58Speaker 5: if you only have one day, you'd probably only have
- 8:02Speaker 5: maybe two or three they can find like that if
- 8:05Speaker 5: you really got after it from daylight to dark. I
- 8:07Speaker 5: feel like, so that might not be super realistic just
- 8:12Speaker 5: having one day, but just being able to go out
- 8:17Speaker 5: there and drive around the area. I think that helps
- 8:20Speaker 5: tremendously going back into it, because then you already have
- 8:24Speaker 5: an idea. Even if you don't have a specific tree
- 8:26Speaker 5: you're going into, you'll have you know, a few different
- 8:30Speaker 5: spots at the very least to that you're going to
- 8:33Speaker 5: want to come back to and kind of key it on.
- 8:35Speaker 5: Maybe maybe you just drive by a spot too, where
- 8:39Speaker 5: I drive by a spot and I'm.
- 8:40Speaker 4: Like, oh, this looks this looks good.
- 8:42Speaker 5: Doesn't look like it's real obvious to get in there,
- 8:45Speaker 5: or maybe like there's a spot where you got to
- 8:48Speaker 5: go like straight up a hill to get up in there.
- 8:52Speaker 4: That would be a spot.
- 8:53Speaker 5: Maybe I don't dive in there right away, but i'd
- 8:55Speaker 5: keep note of it on the map, and you know,
- 9:00Speaker 5: middle of the day, if I'm out there hunting during
- 9:01Speaker 5: the fall, I'd have that spot in mind and say, well,
- 9:04Speaker 5: let's hike up there and just check it out and
- 9:06Speaker 5: kind of scout away into it and pick a spot
- 9:09Speaker 5: to hunt for that afternoon if we can find something
- 9:11Speaker 5: in there. But I think that would be the main
- 9:14Speaker 5: thing for just having a day in August driving around
- 9:19Speaker 5: marking as many spots as I can to that pique
- 9:22Speaker 5: my interest.
- 9:23Speaker 2: I guess what percent of that day do you think
- 9:28Speaker 2: would be that high level driving around, you know, getting
- 9:32Speaker 2: the landmarks figured out, getting the general area figured out.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Is that like fifty of the day quarter of the day.
- 9:39Speaker 3: I think.
- 9:39Speaker 2: I asked this because I think a lot of people
- 9:43Speaker 2: when they think they've got you know, a short amount
- 9:45Speaker 2: of time of scout, they just want to like jump in,
- 9:47Speaker 2: have boots on the ground.
- 9:48Speaker 3: And walk walk walk walk walk.
- 9:50Speaker 2: But a lot of times, you know, folks like you know,
- 9:52Speaker 2: I mean, we we had had a similar question to
- 9:54Speaker 2: Aaron and Zach, and I think they kind of had
- 9:56Speaker 2: a similar approaches. You know, there's a lot of important
- 9:58Speaker 2: importance on understanding and have the outside end view. How
- 10:03Speaker 2: much of your day do you think you'd devote to
- 10:05Speaker 2: that high level side of things.
- 10:07Speaker 4: I'd probably I'd say probably fifty.
- 10:13Speaker 5: Would be driving around at the very least, I think,
- 10:16Speaker 5: just because depending on how big the area is too,
- 10:19Speaker 5: Like if you can cover it from daylight till noon, say,
- 10:25Speaker 5: and then I think from that point that's going to
- 10:28Speaker 5: help you pick out the spots that you want to
- 10:31Speaker 5: dive into and put boots on the ground and scout.
- 10:35Speaker 5: So I'd probably drive around until I covered the whole thing,
- 10:40Speaker 5: and then you never really know what that's going to uncover.
- 10:44Speaker 5: I feel like a lot of times.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, so true.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Okay, Let's imagine we are we're hunting. Season's open and
- 10:57Speaker 2: it's an out of state hunt opening.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Week of the sea. You're there for a week.
- 11:03Speaker 2: This is mixed private ag ground, so like think like
- 11:06Speaker 2: alfalfa or soybeans, something green on the neighboring private the
- 11:11Speaker 2: public land is river bottom ground.
- 11:13Speaker 3: All right.
- 11:14Speaker 2: The hiccup, like the kind of wrench thrown into your plans, though,
- 11:18Speaker 2: is that you can't hunt the first few days of
- 11:20Speaker 2: the season, so you have to show up like three
- 11:23Speaker 2: days late. So it's opening week, but you missed the
- 11:25Speaker 2: first three days, so you know, the amazing opening night
- 11:29Speaker 2: when no one's been in there, Like, we don't get that.
- 11:31Speaker 2: You have to show up after those first few days
- 11:34Speaker 2: of hunting. And this is a place that historically has
- 11:39Speaker 2: had hunting pressure, so this is not like some kind
- 11:41Speaker 2: of secret Heidi hole that no one's gonna hunt. There
- 11:43Speaker 2: will be people hunting those first couple of days. So
- 11:45Speaker 2: that's your scenario. It's opening week, but you missed the
- 11:48Speaker 2: first three days. River bottom cover that you can out
- 11:51Speaker 2: in the public green ag fields on the neighboring private.
- 11:54Speaker 2: How would you approach your first few hunts on this
- 11:58Speaker 2: property in this situation? Do you still hunt it like
- 12:01Speaker 2: you normally would like an early season opening week or
- 12:04Speaker 2: are you assuming now they're not on the food, they're
- 12:06Speaker 2: probably you know, reacting to pressure.
- 12:08Speaker 3: How would you tackles.
- 12:10Speaker 5: I'd probably say saying it's three weeks in or not
- 12:14Speaker 5: three weeks, three days in the sea, three days, I
- 12:17Speaker 5: would think, okay, I'm gonna go around and check these
- 12:20Speaker 5: access points and see like, is there a bunch of
- 12:23Speaker 5: tire tracks in there?
- 12:25Speaker 4: What's that?
- 12:26Speaker 5: What can I tell from just the clues on the
- 12:29Speaker 5: ground how many people have been in here, how many
- 12:31Speaker 5: people been in here, whatever it may be.
- 12:35Speaker 4: But then from there, once I.
- 12:36Speaker 5: Figure out, let's say I find a spot that looks
- 12:40Speaker 5: like there has been a whole lot of people into it,
- 12:43Speaker 5: and I'm imagining like a piece of river bottom that's
- 12:48Speaker 5: you know, there's a little bit of or quite a
- 12:50Speaker 5: bit of room back there, like you have some room
- 12:53Speaker 5: to roam once you leave the parking lot, maybe you can.
- 12:56Speaker 4: Get deep in their ways.
- 12:59Speaker 5: I'd probably from there if I had a day or
- 13:02Speaker 5: two or three days to hunt. At that point, I'd think,
- 13:07Speaker 5: all right, well, I'm gonna just kind of ease my
- 13:09Speaker 5: way into this. I'm just gonna take it real slow.
- 13:11Speaker 5: Maybe maybe head in at like noon or one o'clock
- 13:15Speaker 5: and just kind of pick my way back in there
- 13:18Speaker 5: and scout and look at all the sign.
- 13:21Speaker 4: And then once I find.
- 13:23Speaker 5: Start finding a little bit better sign like rubs and
- 13:27Speaker 5: good trails and whatever it may be, I'd probably set
- 13:30Speaker 5: up and hunt it for the afternoon and then just
- 13:33Speaker 5: kind of take it like a stage stage hunt all
- 13:36Speaker 5: the way back in there. If I was just going
- 13:39Speaker 5: to focus on that one specific river bottom piece, because
- 13:42Speaker 5: like you said, they're probably not gonna be coming out
- 13:44Speaker 5: to the food at that point, so then or in daylight,
- 13:47Speaker 5: you know, So yeah, I just kind of pick my
- 13:51Speaker 5: way back in there. And I feel like that's something
- 13:53Speaker 5: we do all the time, and that's one of my
- 13:55Speaker 5: favorite ways to hunt. If you have a spot where
- 13:58Speaker 5: you're like, you know, there's you know, there's a buck
- 14:01Speaker 5: back in there somewhere, or several bucks maybe, and just
- 14:06Speaker 5: kind of play detective back in there for a couple
- 14:09Speaker 5: of days and just kind of you know, you start
- 14:13Speaker 5: seeing a little bit of sign, you start running into
- 14:15Speaker 5: a few deer here and there maybe, and then set
- 14:19Speaker 5: up and try it. And if you don't see the
- 14:21Speaker 5: action there you want to see, then the next day,
- 14:24Speaker 5: as long as you didn't spook a whole bunch of stuff,
- 14:27Speaker 5: just tear down, go back out, and then the next
- 14:30Speaker 5: day just go in there a little bit deeper until
- 14:32Speaker 5: you find the next batch at hot sign. And then
- 14:34Speaker 5: I think if you do that and you just kind
- 14:37Speaker 5: of always have the wind in your face or whatever,
- 14:40Speaker 5: and you just take it real slow, give yourself plenty
- 14:43Speaker 5: of time to get back in there and get set up.
- 14:45Speaker 5: I think that's a lot of times we have some
- 14:48Speaker 5: of our best hunts.
- 14:50Speaker 2: So what if let's throw one more curveball in there.
- 14:54Speaker 2: All right, Let's say that you have hunted this piece before.
- 14:59Speaker 2: You hunted it the year before, but you hunted it
- 15:01Speaker 2: like mid September, so we're imagining this is like opening
- 15:04Speaker 2: week early September.
- 15:05Speaker 3: We'll see. So you've hunted it in mid.
- 15:08Speaker 2: September before when it was like really blown up two
- 15:10Speaker 2: weeks worth of hunting, and you did the approach you
- 15:13Speaker 2: talked about where you kind of staged your way back,
- 15:16Speaker 2: but you had to keep on going farther and farther
- 15:18Speaker 2: and farther back to finally find where they're daylighting. So
- 15:22Speaker 2: mid for mid September hunt you found out you had
- 15:24Speaker 2: to be like all the way on the edge of
- 15:26Speaker 2: the bed I mean sorry, all the way on the
- 15:28Speaker 2: edge of the river almost until you could actually get
- 15:30Speaker 2: some daylight activity. So now you know like where the
- 15:33Speaker 2: core core core stuff is. But at the same time,
- 15:37Speaker 2: now you're thinking, well, we're only three days in, maybe
- 15:39Speaker 2: they're moving more. So I guess what I'm getting at
- 15:41Speaker 2: is if you knew where they were bedded, would you
- 15:45Speaker 2: still be kind of careful and start far out and
- 15:50Speaker 2: slowly work your way back because maybe only three days
- 15:53Speaker 2: and they might be coming out that far. Or would
- 15:55Speaker 2: you say, well, I know where they're at, and maybe
- 15:59Speaker 2: I could kill them, you know, one hundred yards in
- 16:01Speaker 2: from the field edge, but I could just blast right
- 16:04Speaker 2: in there and just get tight to the bedding that
- 16:06Speaker 2: I know is very very deep. But at the same time,
- 16:07Speaker 2: you're gonna have to push through a lot covered to
- 16:09Speaker 2: get there. Does that change things at all?
- 16:11Speaker 4: I think it might.
- 16:12Speaker 5: I think it might change things a little bit. Depends
- 16:15Speaker 5: on like some think it depends on the time that
- 16:19Speaker 5: I would have, Like say if I had if I
- 16:21Speaker 5: had three days to hunt it, and I'm like, I
- 16:23Speaker 5: don't know, they might make it all the way out here,
- 16:26Speaker 5: because I think I think that's also something that we
- 16:28Speaker 5: do a lot, or I do a lot where like
- 16:31Speaker 5: you're saying, Okay, I'm pretty sure they're going to be
- 16:34Speaker 5: right in this hole right back here. And then if
- 16:38Speaker 5: it's early on in the season, even though maybe it's
- 16:41Speaker 5: three days in and there has been some people in there,
- 16:45Speaker 5: I think a lot of times like I'll push it
- 16:49Speaker 5: a little bit too far, too fast, and then I'll
- 16:53Speaker 5: blow something out of there and it won't work out
- 16:55Speaker 5: where if I have if I know I have that
- 16:58Speaker 5: time to kind of ease my way back in there,
- 17:00Speaker 5: then I'll probably be a little bit more conservative and
- 17:04Speaker 5: you know, hold up a little bit and just see.
- 17:08Speaker 5: Because a lot of times, like early in the season,
- 17:11Speaker 5: like I was saying, like I'll go too far. I mean,
- 17:14Speaker 5: if I'd have just held up back there and a
- 17:17Speaker 5: buck might get up and all of a sudden, he's
- 17:19Speaker 5: you know, covering a little bit more ground than what
- 17:22Speaker 5: I maybe expected. Because there one time Iowa during early
- 17:29Speaker 5: muslither season, I had a real similar situation happened. I
- 17:34Speaker 5: guess where I ended up killing a buck. But me
- 17:38Speaker 5: and Keith were hunting. It was like these big ridges
- 17:42Speaker 5: that all dropped down into a bowl and it was
- 17:46Speaker 5: a bunch of nasty willows at the very end of it.
- 17:48Speaker 5: But these ridges are like super super long, so long
- 17:52Speaker 5: ways coming from the parking lot, and then it all
- 17:54Speaker 5: dropped down into this river and we would walk in
- 17:59Speaker 5: and we'd only take it one hundred and two hundred
- 18:03Speaker 5: yards and there'd be scrapes and rubs, and then I'd
- 18:06Speaker 5: bump a dough or something. I'd be like, oh, you know,
- 18:09Speaker 5: I better hold up right here, because I'm like, I
- 18:11Speaker 5: don't know, they might be just over this next little
- 18:15Speaker 5: in this next little bowl or something coming up to
- 18:17Speaker 5: this ridgetop to feed on all these acorns. So we
- 18:21Speaker 5: set up, like I don't know how many days in
- 18:24Speaker 5: a row. We set up probably three days in a
- 18:26Speaker 5: row where we'd go in and set up and we
- 18:30Speaker 5: wouldn't see nothing. Then we might I mean we were
- 18:33Speaker 5: bumping does on the way in, so that would be
- 18:35Speaker 5: a lot of times where I'd be like, oh, I
- 18:37Speaker 5: better stop right here because what if the buck's like
- 18:39Speaker 5: right over the next deal. So we did that for
- 18:44Speaker 5: three days, I think at least. But the thing that
- 18:49Speaker 5: we were looking at to make our move all the
- 18:53Speaker 5: way in there to where we thought that the bucks
- 18:56Speaker 5: were probably at was there was a day coming up
- 19:02Speaker 5: that was super super windy, so like fifteen mile an
- 19:07Speaker 5: hour winds was coming up, and it was going to
- 19:09Speaker 5: be early muzzle other season, so we were like, well,
- 19:12Speaker 5: it's just kind of pick our way in here, and
- 19:15Speaker 5: maybe there is a chance that there's one up on
- 19:18Speaker 5: these ridges, it's going to pop up here before on
- 19:20Speaker 5: the top before dark. And so we did that a
- 19:25Speaker 5: few different times, and like I said, we didn't see anything.
- 19:28Speaker 5: Maybe we had a dough come by real late, but
- 19:32Speaker 5: not much. And so then that day when the winds
- 19:37Speaker 5: picked up, we were like, all right, we're we're going
- 19:40Speaker 5: We're going for it now. And the interesting thing to
- 19:44Speaker 5: me about this whole hunt was.
- 19:48Speaker 4: The amount of deer that we kicked up on the
- 19:50Speaker 4: way in to get.
- 19:51Speaker 5: To where the buck ended up being at and where
- 19:54Speaker 5: we were kind of thinking he.
- 19:55Speaker 4: Might have been at.
- 19:56Speaker 5: And so it was me, Keith and Gregg and we
- 20:00Speaker 5: just kind of went in on that same ridge top
- 20:02Speaker 5: that we'd been hunting, and we were walking past rubs
- 20:07Speaker 5: and scrapes and everything else kicking up does I mean
- 20:11Speaker 5: we probably kicked up ten or fifteen dos up on
- 20:14Speaker 5: the ridges, and every time one would get up, I'd
- 20:16Speaker 5: be like, oh crap, did I.
- 20:18Speaker 4: Just screw the boodchier right?
- 20:21Speaker 5: And it'd take off and it'd be a dough and
- 20:24Speaker 5: it's like, all right, good, So we'll just keep easing
- 20:26Speaker 5: our way back in there, and eventually we got all
- 20:29Speaker 5: the way to the back and started dropping off down
- 20:32Speaker 5: into the bottom and at that point, because we were
- 20:37Speaker 5: moving pretty slow the whole time, it was like getting
- 20:39Speaker 5: to be the last hour a daylight or so, and
- 20:42Speaker 5: we just dropped in there. And right as soon as
- 20:45Speaker 5: we dropped down in there, I looked up and this
- 20:48Speaker 5: buck was coming right out of the bedding cover that
- 20:51Speaker 5: we were thinking he might have been in.
- 20:54Speaker 4: And then we ended up getting him.
- 20:56Speaker 5: But that was That's one that is pretty similar to
- 21:00Speaker 5: that situation, like you're talking about, just like making a
- 21:04Speaker 5: decision to whether or not you still hunt or stage
- 21:07Speaker 5: your way in there, or do you just die right in.
- 21:10Speaker 5: It's hard because it's a hard decision to make a
- 21:11Speaker 5: lot of time, especially for me, where I'm like, I
- 21:15Speaker 5: don't want to go too far and blow it all
- 21:17Speaker 5: up before we even have a solid hunt, you know, inside.
- 21:22Speaker 4: The bubble of where we think he's at.
- 21:24Speaker 5: Yeah, And uh so, I really I really like hunting
- 21:28Speaker 5: like that whenever I can just kind of ease my
- 21:31Speaker 5: way into a spot and eventually dive all the way
- 21:36Speaker 5: in there. But I mean you run a risk too
- 21:38Speaker 5: with that, where it's like maybe you don't go all
- 21:41Speaker 5: the way in there, and then the next day you
- 21:43Speaker 5: show up and there's already a truck in the parking
- 21:45Speaker 5: lot or something, and then you don't get the chance
- 21:47Speaker 5: to actually dive all the way in there. So it
- 21:50Speaker 5: can be kind of a hard decision to make, But
- 21:53Speaker 5: those hunts are pretty fun.
- 21:55Speaker 2: I think if you have that situation that like, let's
- 21:59Speaker 2: continue to on that line. So let's imagine you start
- 22:02Speaker 2: stage hunting. Let's say you're you're two days into your
- 22:05Speaker 2: stage hunt. You've you've hunted the first day kind of
- 22:07Speaker 2: conservatively saw some deer, but not quite right. So you say,
- 22:11Speaker 2: day two, I'm gonna go in. I'm gonna push one
- 22:13Speaker 2: hundred yards further. Let's say you get in there and
- 22:16Speaker 2: now you start seeing some bucks, but it's like a
- 22:18Speaker 2: couple of nice two year olds, but you just know
- 22:20Speaker 2: there's got to be a big old stinky hog back
- 22:22Speaker 2: there somewhere.
- 22:23Speaker 3: You're just not quite far enough. So now day three,
- 22:25Speaker 3: you show back up.
- 22:27Speaker 2: It's a Friday, and there's a truck of the parking
- 22:30Speaker 2: lot and it's kind of let's just say, like it's
- 22:33Speaker 2: the kind of public land that in your head you're thinking, man,
- 22:36Speaker 2: it's gonna be really hard to get back to where
- 22:38Speaker 2: I want to go without having to walk past this guy.
- 22:40Speaker 2: Either this guy is in there or he's gonna be
- 22:42Speaker 2: somewhere that I'm gonna have to walk right past or
- 22:44Speaker 2: in that zone. You know, would you say I'm going
- 22:48Speaker 2: for it anyways.
- 22:48Speaker 3: Or would you be would you bow out.
- 22:52Speaker 5: M I'd probably I'd probably be trying to figure out
- 22:57Speaker 5: a way to get in there. Yeah, hopefully not walk
- 23:01Speaker 5: right underneath the guy. But if I had to, you know,
- 23:06Speaker 5: if there's like no other way to get in there,
- 23:11Speaker 5: and I might, well, he's if say the say there's
- 23:14Speaker 5: like this access that you're like, all right, he's gotta
- 23:17Speaker 5: be back, I'm gonna walk by him, then I probably
- 23:20Speaker 5: wouldn't do it. But h if there's another way to
- 23:24Speaker 5: like loop in there and get back to the stuff
- 23:28Speaker 5: that I'm wanting to hunt, then I would.
- 23:30Speaker 4: I would go for it, because you know, who knows
- 23:34Speaker 4: he might be.
- 23:35Speaker 5: He might be all the way back in there where
- 23:37Speaker 5: you're trying to go, or he might be just out
- 23:40Speaker 5: of sight out of the parking lot too. So if
- 23:43Speaker 5: there's a way that I think that I can get
- 23:44Speaker 5: in there without messing his hunt up too much, then
- 23:47Speaker 5: I would do it. But if I knew I was
- 23:49Speaker 5: gonna have to walk right underneath of him. I'd I'd
- 23:51Speaker 5: stay out of there, but and probably and then i'd
- 23:55Speaker 5: probably come back the next day or two days later
- 23:59Speaker 5: and just I have all the way back in there.
- 24:01Speaker 5: But yeah, those those can be tricky, and that's why
- 24:04Speaker 5: it's nerve wracking to hold up sometimes and not dive
- 24:09Speaker 5: all the way in. But that's just the risk you run,
- 24:13Speaker 5: I guess on the public.
- 24:14Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, that's the truth. All right.
- 24:29Speaker 2: It's it's early October, and you are kind of doing
- 24:34Speaker 2: what you just described. You're kind of scout hunting your
- 24:37Speaker 2: way in, so you don't have anything pre mapped out,
- 24:40Speaker 2: you don't have something, you don't have a tree picked out.
- 24:42Speaker 2: You're gonna kind of still hunt, slash scout your way
- 24:45Speaker 2: in until you find a.
- 24:46Speaker 3: Spot that looks really good. We'll say we're.
- 24:49Speaker 2: In like like Illinois, Missouri kind of location, okay, and
- 24:55Speaker 2: you're working your way through and you spot a buck
- 25:00Speaker 2: standing up in a brushy draw definitely looks like some
- 25:03Speaker 2: brushy kind of bedding cover.
- 25:04Speaker 3: He's standing up.
- 25:06Speaker 2: He seems like, man, this could be a situation where
- 25:09Speaker 2: I could move in closer, but he beds right back down,
- 25:14Speaker 2: and as you start working your way towards him, you
- 25:16Speaker 2: realize that the wind's a little bit swirling. Let's say
- 25:18Speaker 2: it's kind of in a low spot and you're just
- 25:19Speaker 2: noticing the winds doing some funky stuff. What do you
- 25:22Speaker 2: do in that scenario? Would you try to make a
- 25:24Speaker 2: move on that deer right then and there? Or does
- 25:26Speaker 2: that does that kind of if you wind make you
- 25:29Speaker 2: be more conservative and make you want to do something different?
- 25:32Speaker 3: How would you approach it?
- 25:35Speaker 2: And then let me let me paint just a little
- 25:36Speaker 2: bit more of the picture while you think, imagine he's
- 25:39Speaker 2: he's in this kind of low, brushy draw you saw
- 25:40Speaker 2: him bed down. I'm imagining like like briars, alders, willows
- 25:49Speaker 2: like that kind of just like kind of brushy low stuff.
- 25:52Speaker 2: And you've got like a couple different low rages that
- 25:55Speaker 2: kind of all drop down to this slight depression. So
- 25:59Speaker 2: you've got some hard woods and then this brushy stuff
- 26:02Speaker 2: down there on the bottom where you just saw him
- 26:03Speaker 2: drop it, and maybe some grass mixed in there.
- 26:08Speaker 3: That's your That's as best as I can give you.
- 26:10Speaker 5: Okay, let's see what time What time frame was it?
- 26:15Speaker 3: First week of October? First week of October?
- 26:18Speaker 5: All right, Yeah, I'd probably if I started, Let's say
- 26:21Speaker 5: I start diving down in there, and I'm starting to
- 26:24Speaker 5: get a little bit closer down into the hole that
- 26:26Speaker 5: he's in, and the wind starts getting a little funky
- 26:30Speaker 5: on me, I would I would probably back up. I
- 26:35Speaker 5: would for sure back up to wherever I got a
- 26:37Speaker 5: good solid wind, whatever direction it is, say it's back
- 26:40Speaker 5: in my face at that point, and then from there
- 26:45Speaker 5: I would take a second and just look at the
- 26:47Speaker 5: whole situation, and I would take as much time as
- 26:50Speaker 5: I needed to try and figure out how to get
- 26:54Speaker 5: in there wherever I think he's going to come out at.
- 26:56Speaker 5: I'd probably even look at the map. Even though I'm
- 26:58Speaker 5: looking at the deer, I still look at the map
- 27:01Speaker 5: a bunch and think about, all right, where's he going
- 27:03Speaker 5: to go from?
- 27:04Speaker 4: Right here? Is he going to come out?
- 27:05Speaker 5: I think he's gonna come out to the north east,
- 27:08Speaker 5: whatever it may be. And then I would then that's
- 27:13Speaker 5: when I would make my make my move on him,
- 27:16Speaker 5: where I would probably early October, I'd probably want to
- 27:20Speaker 5: get within one hundred yards if I could, or closer,
- 27:26Speaker 5: depending on the situation. If I could find a spot,
- 27:29Speaker 5: say I could find a spot where maybe I just
- 27:31Speaker 5: keep bouncing a little bit and out of sight of him,
- 27:35Speaker 5: and then I eventually find a spot where all right,
- 27:37Speaker 5: the wind is coming right up this draw and it's
- 27:40Speaker 5: probably gonna hold all the way up this draw.
- 27:43Speaker 4: Then maybe I'd have a better.
- 27:45Speaker 5: Chance of just kind of easing straight down at him
- 27:48Speaker 5: and getting as close as I could. But that's the
- 27:51Speaker 5: thing whenever you and that's where they're at a lot
- 27:53Speaker 5: of times, wherever the wind is just doing like this.
- 27:56Speaker 5: So uh, but that's also a fun situation to be
- 28:00Speaker 5: and if you have one spotted, then you can just
- 28:02Speaker 5: kind of, if you have enough time before he gets
- 28:05Speaker 5: up and gets out of there, just take a step
- 28:08Speaker 5: back and try and figure it out. I guess that's
- 28:14Speaker 5: the funniest part I think about hunting, and everything is
- 28:16Speaker 5: just all the strategy and like the chess match that
- 28:19Speaker 5: goes into it of stuff like that.
- 28:22Speaker 4: But in that situation, I'd for sure, especially.
- 28:26Speaker 5: If I'm on an out of state hunt and I
- 28:28Speaker 5: got eyes on a buck down in this bottom, I'd
- 28:31Speaker 5: be trying to do whatever I could to get within
- 28:36Speaker 5: killing destined of them.
- 28:37Speaker 4: I guess.
- 28:38Speaker 2: So it's okay, so you're throwing milkweed or something, checking
- 28:42Speaker 2: wind all the way, you get to a spot where, like, hey,
- 28:44Speaker 2: I actually think the wind might work here. You find
- 28:47Speaker 2: your spot that you just describe, which is as close
- 28:49Speaker 2: as you can get.
- 28:51Speaker 3: But here's something that I've often debated.
- 28:54Speaker 2: When you're in the situation where you know there's a
- 28:55Speaker 2: buck better than there and it's kind of low brushy stuff,
- 28:58Speaker 2: right so you can't see him right now, But if you.
- 29:02Speaker 3: Get higher, can he see you?
- 29:04Speaker 2: I'm always I'm wondering at this point, do I just
- 29:07Speaker 2: hun the ground or do I try to slip in
- 29:09Speaker 2: some sticks and staddle and get up in the tree
- 29:11Speaker 2: and give myself a slightly better position or slightly you know,
- 29:15Speaker 2: you know, just better circumstances. Would you risk trying to
- 29:18Speaker 2: get up in a tree in that situation or just
- 29:20Speaker 2: stay on the ground and make sure that there's no
- 29:23Speaker 2: chance he sees you.
- 29:25Speaker 5: In that situation, I'd probably be staying on the ground,
- 29:30Speaker 5: I think. But that's that's the thing. It's like hard,
- 29:35Speaker 5: you know, if you're not actually looking at the whole deal.
- 29:37Speaker 5: I would it would be hard to decide what you're
- 29:39Speaker 5: gonna do.
- 29:39Speaker 4: But I would.
- 29:41Speaker 5: I feel like I would probably stay on the ground
- 29:43Speaker 5: because I would I feel like i'd be maneuvering around
- 29:46Speaker 5: as much as I.
- 29:48Speaker 4: Needed to find the spot that I thought would work.
- 29:52Speaker 5: Like I'm imagining he's in this bowl right here, but
- 29:55Speaker 5: you got these little finger hedges that are kind of
- 29:57Speaker 5: dropping down all the way around pretty much, and that's
- 30:01Speaker 5: where I'd be like trying to figure out. I'd be
- 30:04Speaker 5: taking quite a bit of time, like like you said,
- 30:07Speaker 5: dropping milkweed, trying to find that spot where maybe there's
- 30:11Speaker 5: a little bit of a more steady wind as I
- 30:14Speaker 5: get in there closer.
- 30:15Speaker 4: And yeah, I think I would stay on the ground
- 30:18Speaker 4: because then.
- 30:20Speaker 5: Then if he does get up and he does something
- 30:23Speaker 5: a little different than what you thought, you might still
- 30:25Speaker 5: have a little bit of a chance to maneuver a
- 30:28Speaker 5: little bit, try and get in front.
- 30:29Speaker 3: Of him and.
- 30:33Speaker 4: Climbing up in the tree.
- 30:35Speaker 5: If you climb up in the tree and you're in
- 30:37Speaker 5: sight of him, I think then you might blow him
- 30:40Speaker 5: out of there before he even gets up and does
- 30:43Speaker 5: whatever he's gonna do. So uh, and here's another here's another.
- 30:48Speaker 3: Thought on it.
- 30:49Speaker 5: Say, say he gets up and does something a little
- 30:54Speaker 5: different than what I think, and it's like, oh boy,
- 30:57Speaker 5: he's gonna he's gonna walk right up there and get
- 30:59Speaker 5: our or something.
- 31:01Speaker 4: Say, if I have.
- 31:01Speaker 5: A chance to slip out of a drawl or something
- 31:04Speaker 5: and get out of there before you can can get
- 31:07Speaker 5: to our wind, then I would do that to you.
- 31:10Speaker 5: And that'd be an advantage of being on the ground
- 31:12Speaker 5: because then you might have another chance at him the
- 31:14Speaker 5: next day if he's if he's in that same spot
- 31:17Speaker 5: or or somewhere close.
- 31:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 31:21Speaker 2: So, yeah, I was gonna ask. I was gonna ask
- 31:23Speaker 2: a follow up kind of similar to that I was.
- 31:25Speaker 2: I was wondering, and you know this is I've got
- 31:29Speaker 2: another question kind of around the same challenge. But but
- 31:33Speaker 2: I'm curious what you would do in this specific scenario.
- 31:36Speaker 2: Imagine you did this, You found this spot, you found
- 31:38Speaker 2: this little draw where it's kind of sucking your wind down.
- 31:40Speaker 2: You finally get that consistent wind. You set up on
- 31:43Speaker 2: the ground, you're happy with the situation. You're just counting
- 31:47Speaker 2: down and you're just waiting. It's it's three hours to dark,
- 31:49Speaker 2: it's two hours to dark, it's one hour to dark.
- 31:52Speaker 2: And now you're thinking, like any minute now, this buck's
- 31:55Speaker 2: gonna get up and this thing's gonna happen. And then
- 31:57Speaker 2: at that one hour mark, your wind, your consistent wind
- 32:02Speaker 2: isn't consistent anymore. It starts doing the swirly thing that
- 32:05Speaker 2: it was doing everywhere else. With it being the last
- 32:08Speaker 2: hour of daylight, are you like, I'm out and you
- 32:10Speaker 2: slip out of that draw some way, or do you say, well,
- 32:14Speaker 2: it's the last hour, you know, you know it is
- 32:17Speaker 2: what it is, and just play it out and see
- 32:18Speaker 2: what happens.
- 32:19Speaker 3: How do you handle that?
- 32:21Speaker 5: Mm hmm, that's that's tough. I would probably at that
- 32:25Speaker 5: point being if it's the last hour and I'm thinking
- 32:29Speaker 5: I'm in this right spot, but the wind is wrong,
- 32:34Speaker 5: I would probably have a hard time. I would probably
- 32:37Speaker 5: have a hard time leaving, But I don't necessarily think
- 32:41Speaker 5: leaving is would be the wrong answer.
- 32:44Speaker 4: Well, you know how it is.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Sometimes you get where the wind's like not always wrong,
- 32:48Speaker 2: like it's it's good for five minutes, and then five
- 32:50Speaker 2: minutes like I don't come out right now, but then
- 32:52Speaker 2: five minutes I was like, Okay, now if you came
- 32:54Speaker 2: right now, it would work, you know those.
- 32:55Speaker 4: Days, yeah, for sure.
- 32:57Speaker 5: And there there so there was one hunt I'm thinking
- 33:00Speaker 5: of that's real similar to this, But it was in
- 33:03Speaker 5: the morning and this was out in Wyoming and me
- 33:06Speaker 5: and Greg had spotted this buck. He walks all the
- 33:10Speaker 5: way down this river bottom and walk it or we
- 33:12Speaker 5: watch him for a long time, lays down and he's
- 33:16Speaker 5: like right below us, and we're.
- 33:18Speaker 4: Up on like this it drops off.
- 33:20Speaker 5: It's this big bluff, so we're like looking right down
- 33:23Speaker 5: at him, and uh. So we make our move and
- 33:27Speaker 5: get down in there, and it's the same same situation
- 33:31Speaker 5: you're talking about, except it's not it's not in the afternoon,
- 33:35Speaker 5: so I don't know when this thing's gonna get up
- 33:37Speaker 5: or what he's gonna do. But we slip all the
- 33:40Speaker 5: way in there and get to like twenty yards of him,
- 33:43Speaker 5: and we're sitting there and all I can see is
- 33:45Speaker 5: like part of his rack, just sitting there, and it's
- 33:47Speaker 5: moving every once in a while, just a little bit.
- 33:50Speaker 5: And our wind was pretty consistent, like blowing parallel to him,
- 33:56Speaker 5: I guess, And we sat there for a long time,
- 34:01Speaker 5: like a couple hours, but our wind every once in
- 34:04Speaker 5: a while would make like this weird flipping around, and
- 34:10Speaker 5: he wouldn't spook.
- 34:11Speaker 4: So we're like, all right, well, it must be all right.
- 34:13Speaker 5: It must just be kind of swirling real quick, but
- 34:15Speaker 5: not getting to him getting out of there, So we
- 34:19Speaker 5: sat there and sat there and sat there, and he
- 34:21Speaker 5: never got up, and all of a sudden it did
- 34:24Speaker 5: the same thing. And then that time he caught us
- 34:26Speaker 5: and he was out of there immediately. So that's like
- 34:30Speaker 5: that's part of it too, Like running that risk.
- 34:34Speaker 4: I think.
- 34:36Speaker 5: It's just a hard situation to make that decision, but
- 34:39Speaker 5: like that's the I feel like that's the difference a
- 34:43Speaker 5: lot sometimes is if I'm out of state and we're
- 34:49Speaker 5: on like the third day of the hunt at that point,
- 34:51Speaker 5: and we're within twenty yards of this year, but our
- 34:54Speaker 5: wind is kind of acting a little funky, then at
- 34:57Speaker 5: that point, I'm I'm sticking it out. I'm gonna see
- 34:59Speaker 5: if he stands up or what he does, and if
- 35:02Speaker 5: I can, if you just all you had to do
- 35:04Speaker 5: is stand up for just a few seconds and then
- 35:06Speaker 5: I'd probably got a good shot at him.
- 35:08Speaker 4: But at that point, yeah, I was.
- 35:11Speaker 5: I was in there to It was either make or
- 35:13Speaker 5: break at that point, and we just had one gust
- 35:16Speaker 5: of wind that switched on us and you got us.
- 35:19Speaker 5: But going back to your situation like you're talking about,
- 35:22Speaker 5: in that, uh, I'm probably gonna stick.
- 35:28Speaker 4: It out if I If I'm.
- 35:30Speaker 5: In there in the spot that I want to be in,
- 35:33Speaker 5: and our wind starts acting a little bit funky, I'd
- 35:36Speaker 5: probably be like, well, we're just gonna see what happens,
- 35:39Speaker 5: because in an hour, that wind could still switch quite
- 35:42Speaker 5: a bit. At that point, Yeah, like thermals might start dropping,
- 35:46Speaker 5: and that might screw you too, But at least you know,
- 35:50Speaker 5: you don't necessarily always know exactly what that wind's going
- 35:52Speaker 5: to do, so you might just stick it out a
- 35:55Speaker 5: little bit. Or I would maybe stick it out a
- 35:57Speaker 5: little bit longer and just see if see what what
- 36:01Speaker 5: might change, and maybe I can still have a chance
- 36:03Speaker 5: at that point, I guess.
- 36:06Speaker 2: But I feel like in these kinds of scenarios, especially
- 36:09Speaker 2: public or heavily pressure private, there are certain special scenarios
- 36:15Speaker 2: where sometimes you just got to risk it. Oh if
- 36:17Speaker 2: you have eye, if you have eyes on a good buck,
- 36:19Speaker 2: that's such a special thing, Like, oh, you don't.
- 36:21Speaker 3: Get eyes on a buck all that.
- 36:23Speaker 2: Often where you know, oh, he's right here, Usually you're saying,
- 36:26Speaker 2: I think he's here, right, I think he's there. But
- 36:28Speaker 2: when you know he's right there, you kind of got
- 36:31Speaker 2: to just send it.
- 36:32Speaker 3: In a lot of cases, you.
- 36:33Speaker 4: Got to go for it at that point.
- 36:34Speaker 5: I think I think the same thing like you're saying,
- 36:37Speaker 5: it's so hard to especially if you are watching him
- 36:41Speaker 5: stand up and lay back down. I mean, that's that's
- 36:44Speaker 5: a lot of times the best opportunity are going to
- 36:46Speaker 5: get So you might as well just stick it out
- 36:48Speaker 5: and see if you can make it happen, and that
- 36:51Speaker 5: that first first try at him, because chances are if you,
- 36:56Speaker 5: chances are if you back out of there, say, and
- 36:58Speaker 5: maybe he doesn't get your win right off the bat,
- 37:01Speaker 5: get a chance, he's gonna get up and walk out
- 37:04Speaker 5: of there and kind of be manning around and catch
- 37:06Speaker 5: your ground scent anyway and be somewhere else tomorrow. So
- 37:12Speaker 5: uh yeah, anytime you get in that situation, I feel
- 37:15Speaker 5: like you just got to try and make something work
- 37:18Speaker 5: and that that's that's a fun situation to be in too.
- 37:22Speaker 3: So yeah, all right, I'm giving you a new one.
- 37:25Speaker 4: Uh.
- 37:26Speaker 2: These are are all kind of slight iterations and something
- 37:30Speaker 2: similar because I'm kind of riffing on things that you
- 37:32Speaker 2: guys often do.
- 37:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 37:34Speaker 2: So so again, let's let's say you're in Pennsylvania this
- 37:38Speaker 2: time mid October, and again you're you're working some relatively
- 37:45Speaker 2: new stuff. Like again, you're not hunting your back ford it.
- 37:47Speaker 2: This is like some stuff that you don't fully know.
- 37:49Speaker 2: You map scouted it, you've you've thought about it, but
- 37:52Speaker 2: you're gonna You're gonna do your kind of scout your
- 37:54Speaker 2: way in stage hunt is your plan. But as you
- 37:57Speaker 2: walk through, everything's kind of the same. There's like there's
- 38:01Speaker 2: a little rub here, there's a scrape here, there's some
- 38:03Speaker 2: trails here, but you know, let's stay. You start at noon,
- 38:06Speaker 2: and from noon to one it's still kind of that,
- 38:08Speaker 2: and from one to three it's still kind of there's
- 38:11Speaker 2: a little bit here, a little bit here. But nothing
- 38:13Speaker 2: is screaming. Nothing is like oh yes, Like you're not
- 38:16Speaker 2: bumping a bunch of doughs like you said earlier.
- 38:18Speaker 3: You're not coming.
- 38:19Speaker 2: Across the red hot, huge scrape on the edge of
- 38:21Speaker 2: nasty thick cover. It's just kind of like open hardwoods,
- 38:25Speaker 2: some mixed cover here and there. But nothing screams, you know,
- 38:29Speaker 2: screams like stop. Would you just keep scouting your way
- 38:34Speaker 2: in all the way till dark or will it be
- 38:37Speaker 2: like the last hour daylight? And you're finally like, all right, well,
- 38:39Speaker 2: nothing seems good. I'm just gonna sit and watch for
- 38:42Speaker 2: the last hour, like how would you handle that scenario
- 38:45Speaker 2: where you scout and never find the oh, flashing red
- 38:50Speaker 2: light stop here situation.
- 38:53Speaker 5: In that situation, I would probably like I would keep
- 38:58Speaker 5: going until like probably an hour before dark or something.
- 39:02Speaker 5: If I'm not finding exactly what I want to find
- 39:06Speaker 5: or whatever something that says, yeah, I better stop, I'd
- 39:09Speaker 5: probably just keep going and tell about an hour before dark,
- 39:15Speaker 5: and then I might just set up and just see
- 39:17Speaker 5: what happens, and maybe you just get lucky and catch
- 39:21Speaker 5: some deer movement at that point, because I mean, if
- 39:24Speaker 5: you're finding sign all the way up through somewhere and
- 39:28Speaker 5: maybe it's not anything crazy, I mean, there's probably good
- 39:33Speaker 5: amount of deer around, so you might as well just
- 39:37Speaker 5: set up and just see what happens, rather than just
- 39:39Speaker 5: keep walking and then next thing you know, you walk
- 39:42Speaker 5: up on a buck and blow.
- 39:43Speaker 4: Them out of there.
- 39:46Speaker 5: So I would probably just, yeah, scout until hour before dark,
- 39:51Speaker 5: and maybe I found a scrape.
- 39:54Speaker 4: Or a rub or whatever it may be.
- 39:56Speaker 5: I'd just set up on that and just kind of
- 39:59Speaker 5: see what happened and then and then regroup for the
- 40:02Speaker 5: next day and and try and figure out what I
- 40:05Speaker 5: what do I.
- 40:06Speaker 4: Want where do I want to adjust? To or what
- 40:08Speaker 4: do I want to do for the next day or two.
- 40:14Speaker 5: But I feel like we run into that situation a
- 40:17Speaker 5: lot too, where it's like, especially out of state, where
- 40:21Speaker 5: you're like you keep walking and walking and walking, and
- 40:24Speaker 5: you're like nothing is making me want to stop. And
- 40:29Speaker 5: that's a hard situation to decide what to do, where
- 40:31Speaker 5: you're just like and at that point you're so frustrated
- 40:35Speaker 5: you've been walking or something, you're like, let's just let's
- 40:39Speaker 5: just throw up and stand and sit here, or just
- 40:42Speaker 5: sit on the ground and just see what happens. Yeah,
- 40:46Speaker 5: I mean, okay, So another scenario where I ran into
- 40:51Speaker 5: that same pretty much the same exact thing that you
- 40:54Speaker 5: just described. I ran into that last year in at Iowa,
- 40:59Speaker 5: and I had been running trail or cell cameras all fall,
- 41:06Speaker 5: and at this point it's like November third or something,
- 41:13Speaker 5: so I mean, things are really going at that point.
- 41:17Speaker 5: And I was me and Walker, who I was hunting with,
- 41:21Speaker 5: we were not doing that well at that point. We
- 41:24Speaker 5: were like, could not get on deer. We were like
- 41:27Speaker 5: chasing cell cameras around get a big picture of a
- 41:31Speaker 5: big buck over here, and I'd be like, oh, we
- 41:33Speaker 5: got to go try that just like spread myself way
- 41:36Speaker 5: too thin where I'm like, oh, I'm gonna go hunt
- 41:38Speaker 5: over here, and then the next day I'm gonna go
- 41:40Speaker 5: hunt twenty miles over this way in a completely different
- 41:43Speaker 5: piece of public. So when this scenario came up, I
- 41:50Speaker 5: had pretty much just totally wrote off all the pictures
- 41:53Speaker 5: that I'd gotten or anything. I'm like, I'm not hunting
- 41:55Speaker 5: around cameras, not doing any of that. I'm just getting
- 42:00Speaker 5: We're going to go into this piece of public that
- 42:03Speaker 5: we hadn't hunted at that point in the fall.
- 42:06Speaker 4: But I was like, We're just going to scout.
- 42:09Speaker 5: Away into it and see what happens, because we got
- 42:12Speaker 5: to just try something different at this point, basically, And
- 42:18Speaker 5: that was the situation that we walked in there.
- 42:20Speaker 4: There was this big ridge system.
- 42:22Speaker 5: Found like a little tiny rub here, found another little
- 42:27Speaker 5: rub over here, like.
- 42:29Speaker 4: Not much really, and.
- 42:34Speaker 5: It was to a point where I was just like
- 42:36Speaker 5: so frustrated I couldn't find we did, weren't finding anything
- 42:39Speaker 5: that I was like, all right, yeah, let's set up
- 42:41Speaker 5: on this. And so I just ended up sitting down
- 42:44Speaker 5: on the ground up against his tree and it was
- 42:48Speaker 5: this huge bowl that kind of ran down. So we
- 42:50Speaker 5: could see good ways down through there, and it was
- 42:53Speaker 5: only forty minutes till dark, and it was cloudy that day,
- 42:57Speaker 5: so it was probably less than that even and I
- 43:00Speaker 5: just sat down on a tree and we just kind
- 43:03Speaker 5: of sat there and took a break, and it was like,
- 43:05Speaker 5: all right, well, probably not going to kill a deer tonight,
- 43:10Speaker 5: so he might as well just sit down and just
- 43:11Speaker 5: see what happens, and we probably not can see anything.
- 43:14Speaker 4: We'll probably just walk out and regroup tomorrow.
- 43:16Speaker 5: So we sit down and like five minutes goes by
- 43:20Speaker 5: and I look up and there's this huge buck standing
- 43:24Speaker 5: down in the clear, down in the bottom of the bowl,
- 43:28Speaker 5: and I'm like, holy crap, walker, I'm like, there's a
- 43:31Speaker 5: big buck down here. And we just sit there and
- 43:35Speaker 5: I don't know what this buck was doing or anything,
- 43:39Speaker 5: but I mean, he just was. He stood up and
- 43:41Speaker 5: then he laid back down, and that was the whole
- 43:45Speaker 5: rest of the afternoon. There was only like twenty minutes
- 43:47Speaker 5: or something of daylight at that point.
- 43:51Speaker 4: And yeah, he just kind of laid there.
- 43:54Speaker 5: I don't know if he had been shot or what.
- 43:58Speaker 5: That's kind of what I thought after, but anyway, that
- 44:01Speaker 5: don't necessarily matter. But that's the situation that we were in,
- 44:05Speaker 5: Like we weren't finding anything that, you know, really tipped
- 44:09Speaker 5: us off to all right, we gotta sit right here.
- 44:12Speaker 5: And I think sometimes that's the best thing you can do,
- 44:17Speaker 5: just kind of sit down wherever. I mean, ideally you'd
- 44:21Speaker 5: make an actual setup. At that point, we were just
- 44:24Speaker 5: sitting up against a tree, but I just looked down
- 44:27Speaker 5: and there was a big Bucks standing there, and I'm like,
- 44:30Speaker 5: you know, there's obviously some deer around at that point,
- 44:33Speaker 5: but nothing like scorching hot. And then the next day
- 44:38Speaker 5: we went in there same spot, didn't set up in
- 44:42Speaker 5: the same exact spot, but in the same general area,
- 44:46Speaker 5: and we saw quite a few deer the next day.
- 44:48Speaker 5: I mean, we saw a couple of little bucks, quite
- 44:51Speaker 5: a few dos, and so pretty decent hunt, I guess
- 44:55Speaker 5: the next day.
- 44:57Speaker 4: But those are always some of them. It was frustrating.
- 45:02Speaker 5: Situations that I feel like I'll get in where you
- 45:06Speaker 5: just walk and walk and walk, and you just find
- 45:08Speaker 5: in these little tiny rubs or whatever, nothing too crazy.
- 45:12Speaker 5: And I think if you're committed to that spot for
- 45:16Speaker 5: that afternoon, I think that's the best thing you can do.
- 45:20Speaker 5: If you get down to the last hour hour and
- 45:23Speaker 5: a half daylight, just make it, make a decent setup
- 45:27Speaker 5: and see what happens, and maybe you'll learn something from that,
- 45:31Speaker 5: or you might see it, might see some deer, so.
- 45:36Speaker 3: Or just practice some some zen self talk and try
- 45:39Speaker 3: to calm yourself down from the frustration the day.
- 45:42Speaker 4: Yeah, that's probably the.
- 45:44Speaker 5: Best thing you can do anyway, because otherwise you're going
- 45:47Speaker 5: to be your mind's going to be in a whirlwind
- 45:49Speaker 5: for the next day. If you can sit down and yeah,
- 45:53Speaker 5: look at the map and try and at that point
- 45:56Speaker 5: just start coming up with a game plan for the
- 45:58Speaker 5: next day.
- 45:58Speaker 3: A lot of times, but yeah, regroup a little bit.
- 46:01Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't think it.
- 46:03Speaker 5: I don't think it hurts in those situations, just to
- 46:07Speaker 5: make some sort of setup and just see what happens, and.
- 46:10Speaker 4: Yeah, never know what what might go down.
- 46:14Speaker 2: All right, So remember that first question I gave you
- 46:16Speaker 2: about having one day in August to go and do
- 46:19Speaker 2: like a twelve hour scout, right, Uh So let's let's
- 46:23Speaker 2: go back there. Let's say you did that one day
- 46:25Speaker 2: of scouting and it was amazing, Like when you walked
- 46:30Speaker 2: through there, you were bumping deer all over the place.
- 46:32Speaker 2: You bumped a one seventy.
- 46:33Speaker 3: Off a bed.
- 46:35Speaker 2: You saw just ripped up old rubs from the year before.
- 46:39Speaker 2: You found just like scorched earth, incredible looking activity. And
- 46:44Speaker 2: you knew, like, man, when I come back in November,
- 46:47Speaker 2: this place is going to be amazing. You drove around
- 46:52Speaker 2: the last hour of daylight in the fields and the
- 46:54Speaker 2: surrounding agg and you saw a lot of deer, You.
- 46:57Speaker 3: Saw a bunch of good bucks.
- 47:00Speaker 2: Everything you could possibly ask for you saw in that
- 47:02Speaker 2: day of scouting. All Right, you return in November, first
- 47:06Speaker 2: week in November, and you pull up to that first
- 47:10Speaker 2: parking lot that you looked at in August.
- 47:12Speaker 3: There's three cars there.
- 47:13Speaker 2: You pull up to the second car or the second
- 47:16Speaker 2: parking lot, there's a car there. You go to the
- 47:18Speaker 2: third parking lot, there's a car there. There's two guys
- 47:22Speaker 2: getting out some portable tree stands on the back tailgate
- 47:25Speaker 2: of one of those trucks. Everywhere you go, you're seeing people.
- 47:30Speaker 2: Is that enough to like say, screw it, I'm gonna
- 47:33Speaker 2: go to some other property that we didn't get scouted
- 47:36Speaker 2: this summer? Or would you I guess, or what would
- 47:38Speaker 2: you do? What would you do in this scenario where
- 47:40Speaker 2: the scouting was so exciting. You had such high hopes,
- 47:43Speaker 2: but now you arrive and there's people everywhere.
- 47:46Speaker 5: At that point, I'm probably I'm probably gonna I'd probably
- 47:53Speaker 5: back out and go somewhere else that I hadn't scouted,
- 47:56Speaker 5: maybe something that looks kind of similar to the have
- 48:00Speaker 5: tet that I did scout where I found all that
- 48:02Speaker 5: real good sign, but also I could see myself you say,
- 48:09Speaker 5: I did see all them people or whatever. I might
- 48:13Speaker 5: still try and find a little spot here or there
- 48:15Speaker 5: where I could slip in and just try it for
- 48:17Speaker 5: a day and just see what happens. Especially if there's
- 48:20Speaker 5: like you're saying, there's deer all over the place. I
- 48:25Speaker 5: would still probably do a little bit of driving around
- 48:30Speaker 5: looking for a spot where maybe there's not somebody at,
- 48:35Speaker 5: or you know, just like a little pocketed ground where
- 48:40Speaker 5: I guess, yeah, where there's not somebody at and just
- 48:42Speaker 5: try it. But then that would be one where I
- 48:47Speaker 5: might try it for an afternoon, and if I don't
- 48:50Speaker 5: see some action or whatever, then I'm pulling the plug
- 48:54Speaker 5: probably pretty quick. But it's it is hard sometimes when
- 48:59Speaker 5: you find a spot that you're so excited about and
- 49:02Speaker 5: then you get back there and and then you just
- 49:05Speaker 5: got to be like, well, this probably isn't isn't the
- 49:09Speaker 5: best spot, so I'm just gonna bounce and head to
- 49:12Speaker 5: the next spot. But yeah, that that's probably what I
- 49:19Speaker 5: would do a lot of times. I mean, I feel
- 49:21Speaker 5: like the more you do it where it's like you
- 49:24Speaker 5: go on these hunts out of state and maybe you're
- 49:28Speaker 5: in a spot and you're just like hunting one day
- 49:31Speaker 5: after the next and not seeing what you want to see,
- 49:37Speaker 5: and you'll just get to a point where you're like,
- 49:39Speaker 5: all right, yep, it's time to pull the plug. And
- 49:42Speaker 5: a lot of times that's an exciting thing to do,
- 49:44Speaker 5: I think, because I feel like a lot of the
- 49:48Speaker 5: times will be you know, in this cycle of hunting
- 49:51Speaker 5: the same spot, not the same exact spot, but the
- 49:55Speaker 5: same public areas, say, and it's just not quite working,
- 50:00Speaker 5: and then you say, all right, time to time to
- 50:03Speaker 5: head to the next spot. And I feel like a
- 50:06Speaker 5: lot of times that's when you that's when things turn
- 50:09Speaker 5: around for you.
- 50:10Speaker 4: On that trip. Because we do that all the time
- 50:14Speaker 4: where we'll kind of.
- 50:17Speaker 5: Get married to a spot right off the bat and
- 50:20Speaker 5: you're like, oh, this is gonna work, this is gonna work,
- 50:22Speaker 5: this is gonna work, and then it just doesn't and
- 50:23Speaker 5: doesn't doesn't.
- 50:24Speaker 4: And then you're like, all right, gotta go.
- 50:27Speaker 5: Yeah, and uh, I mean, I'm thinking in Oklahoma a
- 50:32Speaker 5: couple of years ago, me and Jake, we're hunting this spot.
- 50:37Speaker 5: Everything looked really good, a lot of deer around, but
- 50:40Speaker 5: also a lot of people. And this was November time frame,
- 50:45Speaker 5: like first week or two November, and we were hunting.
- 50:52Speaker 5: Jake had actually shot a buck in that piece of
- 50:54Speaker 5: public that we started at, and we were seeing you know,
- 51:00Speaker 5: decent bucks here and there, but then we'd run into
- 51:03Speaker 5: people and we'd run into people, and then eventually we
- 51:06Speaker 5: were like, let's just ditch, just go try and find
- 51:09Speaker 5: something else. So we found ended up we were driving
- 51:16Speaker 5: like a long ways across the state. We were just
- 51:19Speaker 5: gonna go clear across the states some other some real
- 51:22Speaker 5: small chunks, and on the way there there was a
- 51:28Speaker 5: tiny little piece of public, or it looked tiny on
- 51:31Speaker 5: the map. It was a decent size once you got there,
- 51:33Speaker 5: but uh no trees, hardly at all. Like nothing on
- 51:38Speaker 5: the map looked like trees or like a block of
- 51:40Speaker 5: woods or anything like that. And we just pulled in
- 51:43Speaker 5: there and got there like twenty minutes before dark and
- 51:46Speaker 5: started seeing bucks left and right, and then the next
- 51:50Speaker 5: day it got up and I ended up shooting one
- 51:53Speaker 5: there the very next morning. So that's that's where I
- 51:58Speaker 5: guess I feel like, uh like, especially if me and
- 52:03Speaker 5: Jake go somewhere like that and then you're just not
- 52:08Speaker 5: seeing what you want to see, or you're just not
- 52:10Speaker 5: getting into quite as much as you want to. He's
- 52:14Speaker 5: pick up and move and and at some point running
- 52:18Speaker 5: to a spot and you're like, all right, yeah, this
- 52:19Speaker 5: is this is it now?
- 52:23Speaker 2: Location can make all the difference, No, for sure, Yeah
- 52:26Speaker 2: that's the truth. All right, Let's let's riff on this
- 52:43Speaker 2: just a little bit more, a little bit on like
- 52:44Speaker 2: the dealing.
- 52:45Speaker 3: With people situation.
- 52:46Speaker 2: Let's say that we'll stick in the same spot, so,
- 52:51Speaker 2: same place you scouted in the summer, same place looked incredible.
- 52:55Speaker 2: Let's say you found just like that epic buck betting
- 52:58Speaker 2: kind of sound like like a buck now kind of spot.
- 53:02Speaker 3: And you're gonna hunt it.
- 53:04Speaker 2: It's like late October, late October twenty third or twenty fourth.
- 53:07Speaker 2: Let's say that's when you return for this strip, first
- 53:10Speaker 2: time hunting it. You've got incredibly high hopes for it.
- 53:13Speaker 2: There's not a bunch of trucks at the parking lot
- 53:15Speaker 2: this time. So let's pretend that that last scenario didn't happen.
- 53:18Speaker 2: So instead, you show up on the twenty fourth for
- 53:20Speaker 2: the first time, no other trucks, The buck nest or
- 53:23Speaker 2: whatever looks.
- 53:24Speaker 3: Like, Man, this is gonna be great.
- 53:25Speaker 2: You slip in, you get tight, relatively tight to it,
- 53:29Speaker 2: sky high.
- 53:30Speaker 3: This is it.
- 53:31Speaker 2: And three hours before dark, here comes another hunter and
- 53:35Speaker 2: he goes past you, even closer to the buck bedding.
- 53:39Speaker 3: Let's say like you can't see. Let's say like there's
- 53:42Speaker 3: a little bit of a.
- 53:43Speaker 2: Gap between where you are and where you think those
- 53:45Speaker 2: bucks are. He walks by withinside of you and goes
- 53:48Speaker 2: past you. What do you do in that scenario?
- 53:53Speaker 3: Do you hunt it? Do you bail and go try
- 53:55Speaker 3: to find something new?
- 53:57Speaker 4: If I'm already you're saying up in there.
- 54:00Speaker 2: Yep, you're in a tree. Let's say you're up in
- 54:02Speaker 2: your saddle and he goes past you. It goes deeper
- 54:05Speaker 2: than you, but you know that he went right into
- 54:07Speaker 2: the hole. He's in there somewhere.
- 54:10Speaker 5: I'm probably I'm probably gonna hunt it for at that point,
- 54:13Speaker 5: I'm gonna stay in there and just see what happens,
- 54:16Speaker 5: because maybe he walks in there and bumps one out
- 54:20Speaker 5: of there and it comes right by me. But yeah,
- 54:23Speaker 5: I'd probably stay in there at that point for at
- 54:27Speaker 5: least a little bit longer, a couple hours or whatever,
- 54:32Speaker 5: and just try it. But then if I'm just sitting
- 54:35Speaker 5: there and just can't get that guy going in there
- 54:37Speaker 5: out of my mind, then at that point I would
- 54:40Speaker 5: probably be like, I, uh, let's go try something different.
- 54:43Speaker 5: I don't like that at that point. But if he
- 54:48Speaker 5: walked in there, yeah, I'd probably sit it it didn't
- 54:51Speaker 5: work out, then then at that point that's when i'd regroup.
- 54:55Speaker 5: After maybe a couple hours, especially if it's getting to
- 54:58Speaker 5: that time of the year, like October twenty fourth, then
- 55:02Speaker 5: I would I'd be more likely to stick stick it
- 55:06Speaker 5: out in there for a little bit longer and just
- 55:08Speaker 5: see what happens, because you never know, and him walking
- 55:12Speaker 5: in there maybe that works to your advantage.
- 55:14Speaker 4: I guess, uh yeah, but yeah, But.
- 55:19Speaker 5: Then at that point, if it didn't work out, if
- 55:22Speaker 5: I was there for the whole rest of the afternoon
- 55:25Speaker 5: and he had walked in there past me, then I
- 55:27Speaker 5: probably wouldn't be coming back. I'd probably I'd probably climb
- 55:30Speaker 5: down and make an adjustment, go somewhere else, try something different.
- 55:36Speaker 3: At that point, yep, makes sense.
- 55:40Speaker 2: All right, Let's fast forward back to the rut and
- 55:44Speaker 2: you are set up in a location that is just
- 55:47Speaker 2: screaming hot with rut sign, fresh rubs, fresh scrapes, and
- 55:51Speaker 2: you ran this terrific little like terrain pinch point. Maybe
- 55:56Speaker 2: it's a saddle and a ridge and there's a creek crossing,
- 55:59Speaker 2: and there's several different things that make this seem like
- 56:02Speaker 2: a dyamite rut spot. You sit it the entire day,
- 56:07Speaker 2: don't see a single deer. Day two, you go back
- 56:11Speaker 2: and keep hunting it, or because everything else looks so great,
- 56:15Speaker 2: or is a full day with zero deer enough for
- 56:18Speaker 2: you to say, screw this, I'm looking for something new.
- 56:22Speaker 4: Mmmm. That's I would probably I would.
- 56:26Speaker 5: I would probably want to try it again, especially if
- 56:29Speaker 5: I was in there didn't see anybody else, then I
- 56:35Speaker 5: would want to try it again.
- 56:36Speaker 4: If I if I.
- 56:37Speaker 5: Was in there and then let's say I saw somebody
- 56:41Speaker 5: else walking by me or something like that, and I
- 56:43Speaker 5: didn't see any deer, then yeah, I'd probably be bailing out,
- 56:45Speaker 5: going trying something different, trying to find the action but yeah,
- 56:52Speaker 5: if I if there was a bunch of sign in there,
- 56:54Speaker 5: I'd be trying that spot again. Maybe not that exact spot,
- 56:57Speaker 5: but I would. I would be coming back back in
- 57:00Speaker 5: there the next day and uh maybe hunt that same
- 57:05Speaker 5: spot in the morning, the same tree even And if
- 57:08Speaker 5: that that didn't work out, then I'd be getting down
- 57:11Speaker 5: and doing some walking around in there looking for the
- 57:16Speaker 5: next setup that I think would work and try that.
- 57:22Speaker 5: And I think that's I think that's the whole thing
- 57:24Speaker 5: about the rut too. Like if you're in a spot
- 57:28Speaker 5: like that where there's tons of sign and you're not
- 57:31Speaker 5: seeing really good action, or maybe not really good action,
- 57:35Speaker 5: but you're not seeing a little bit of action, you
- 57:38Speaker 5: gotta get down and and go try and find it
- 57:42Speaker 5: because otherwise, I mean, that's that's what happened to us
- 57:47Speaker 5: this year, same thing. Like I me and Walker scattered
- 57:52Speaker 5: this spot one day and it was like October twenty ninth.
- 57:58Speaker 5: Tons of sign in there, crazy, I mean, like rubs
- 58:01Speaker 5: and scrapes everywhere coming right out of this block of
- 58:05Speaker 5: thick covered and I'm like, yeah, I mean we were
- 58:07Speaker 5: both standing there like this is the spot, but we
- 58:10Speaker 5: didn't hunt it that day because it was super warm
- 58:13Speaker 5: that afternoon, and I wanted to just bounce around and
- 58:17Speaker 5: find a bunch of different spots to go back to
- 58:19Speaker 5: because we were about to have some really good weather
- 58:21Speaker 5: coming up. So I'm like, all right, let's just scout
- 58:24Speaker 5: find spots, mark spots, and won't come back and hunt them.
- 58:28Speaker 5: So I hang a trail camera in there that afternoon,
- 58:32Speaker 5: and right at dark, two big bucks come right in
- 58:36Speaker 5: front of the trail camera, which is.
- 58:38Speaker 4: Right where I would have set up.
- 58:40Speaker 5: If I didn't hang the camera there, I would have
- 58:42Speaker 5: just set up there hunted on that trail that they
- 58:46Speaker 5: walked out on. So the next day we go in there,
- 58:50Speaker 5: hunt it the whole day, and we saw one small
- 58:55Speaker 5: buck all day I think, and had one guy while
- 59:00Speaker 5: in on us.
- 59:02Speaker 4: Before daylight. So that's the spot.
- 59:07Speaker 5: That was going through my mind as you were going
- 59:10Speaker 5: through that situation, I guess. And so at that point,
- 59:15Speaker 5: I'm like, that was a hard spot for me to leave,
- 59:20Speaker 5: to pick up and leave because I had just gotten
- 59:22Speaker 5: two really nice bucks on here the day before. So
- 59:26Speaker 5: we hunted all day, don't see anything, and I think,
- 59:34Speaker 5: I want to say, we went back in there the
- 59:35Speaker 5: next morning and try it one more time, and didn't
- 59:39Speaker 5: see nothing. And then from there we were like, all right, nope,
- 59:42Speaker 5: we're pulling the plug on this.
- 59:43Speaker 4: We're not coming back. And kind of the.
- 59:45Speaker 5: Crazy thing is I didn't hardly have anything on that
- 59:47Speaker 5: trail camera either after that. So but in that situation,
- 59:53Speaker 5: what we did was we backed out after giving it
- 59:56Speaker 5: a full day and then next morning or something like that,
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: and then we just started bouncing around either in the car,
- 1:00:04Speaker 5: in the boat, whatever, and then we started getting back
- 1:00:09Speaker 5: on deer after that.
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: So that was once.
- 1:00:13Speaker 5: That was one scenario where it was like, uh, I
- 1:00:18Speaker 5: mean crazy good sign in there, just had picture of
- 1:00:21Speaker 5: two bucks go through there the day before, hunted it
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: for the whole next day, next morning, whatever, and just
- 1:00:28Speaker 5: it was just completely dead in there. And then that's
- 1:00:31Speaker 5: when we pulled the plug after that. But that was hard.
- 1:00:34Speaker 5: I remember that being really hard for me to be like,
- 1:00:38Speaker 5: all right, we got to go try something else because
- 1:00:41Speaker 5: this wasn't it wasn't working.
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: So but yeah, what about.
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: A slight variation on that.
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: Let's say like you've got this amazing spot and you
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: go in there and you set up and let's say
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: it's like it's like a tight kind of location where
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: you because of the creek crossing. Because of the way
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: the funnels, you really feel confident, like, man, if a
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: deer comes through here, he's gonna come through here at
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: the X. And so you set up in range of
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: the X, and it's kind of a funky tree to
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: get up into, but once you're up in there, it's
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: like great cover, perfect shooting range of the AX. Like
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: you are feeling very very confident. The sign is incredible.
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: But as the day progresses, let's say the first couple
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: hours of daylight, you see a bunch of deer and
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: three bucks all come through, but they're all like twenty
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: yards out of range.
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: For whatever reason, you felt like the X.
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: That you thought was where they would all be, they're
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: just doing something slightly off of that, and they're you know,
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: they're out at fifty yards every single time. These three
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: bucks that all came through at different times, they're all
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: just out of range.
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: Do you move in any kind of way.
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: After the first few hours or do you say, wow,
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: you know this is this still should work eventually?
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: Do you stick it out?
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: Do you shift your location by twenty yards or what
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: do you do in that scenario after you've seen three
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: bucks pass through just out of range, even though everything
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: else looks so good.
- 1:02:07Speaker 5: That at that point, yeah, I'd be getting down and
- 1:02:10Speaker 5: moving over there.
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: Wherever I'd seen them all going through, I'd be If
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: I saw a coup, it would probably be one or
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: two or two or three bucks.
- 1:02:22Speaker 5: If they two or three bucks went through the same spot, yeah,
- 1:02:25Speaker 5: I'd be climbing down and getting over.
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: There for for the rest of the day. Probably.
- 1:02:30Speaker 5: But uh yeah, which that's a good that's a great
- 1:02:34Speaker 5: scenario to be in too. I think like, even if
- 1:02:36Speaker 5: you are sitting there thinking how they should come right
- 1:02:39Speaker 5: through here, then you see several of them do the
- 1:02:42Speaker 5: same thing, it's like, oh yeah, I'm getting right over
- 1:02:44Speaker 5: there and sitting it out. And then that's when you'd
- 1:02:49Speaker 5: move over there, and then you'd hear something behind you
- 1:02:51Speaker 5: and you'd look back and one be walking right.
- 1:02:56Speaker 4: That's exactly what true.
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: Oh god, yeah, that's so true.
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: When when would you make that move? Would you let's say,
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: like the third buck moves through. In your head, you're like, okay,
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: I gotta move, but it's nine o'clock. Do you move,
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: like as soon as that bucks out of sight, I'm
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: doing it right away? Or are you gonna wait till
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: a certain time of day when you think the least
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: do your activity is going to be your when do
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: you decide to pull that plug and actually physically tear
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: everything down.
- 1:03:25Speaker 5: I I would probably as soon as that third buck
- 1:03:28Speaker 5: went through, I'd probably be climbing down as fast as
- 1:03:32Speaker 5: I could to get over there. I think, because and
- 1:03:35Speaker 5: that's that's uh, yeah, that's one of those decisions where
- 1:03:40Speaker 5: it's like you sit there and hesitate just a little bit,
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: and you're like, should I move or should I not?
- 1:03:44Speaker 5: It'd be like, I mean, it'd be hard. It's hard
- 1:03:47Speaker 5: to make that decision to do it because any next
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: thing you know, you're climbing down one another one's coming
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: spook him. But I think it's I think if you
- 1:03:56Speaker 5: especially if you see like three of them do that, Yeah,
- 1:04:01Speaker 5: I'd be climbing down as fast as I could to
- 1:04:04Speaker 5: get over there. And maybe you don't even maybe you
- 1:04:06Speaker 5: don't even move over there and climb a tree if
- 1:04:08Speaker 5: you're real worried about like you say, it's like you said,
- 1:04:11Speaker 5: nine o'clock in the morning and in the middle of
- 1:04:15Speaker 5: the rut or something. Yeah, I would be like getting
- 1:04:19Speaker 5: over there as fast as I could, and maybe I
- 1:04:21Speaker 5: wouldn't even climb a tree at that point, because because
- 1:04:25Speaker 5: that's another situation where it's like then you're leaving yourself.
- 1:04:29Speaker 5: As long as it takes you to climb the tree
- 1:04:31Speaker 5: and get everything set up, that's even more time that
- 1:04:34Speaker 5: you're taking to not be ready to shoot one if
- 1:04:37Speaker 5: it walks down that trail. So I'd just be probably
- 1:04:42Speaker 5: getting over there and trying to find a set up
- 1:04:45Speaker 5: on the ground somewhere to where I don't have to
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: mess around with anything, you know, the least amount of
- 1:04:52Speaker 5: time as I could. I'd just dive in there and
- 1:04:56Speaker 5: get ready to to shoot.
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: The next one that walked down to there.
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: But yeah, that makes sense, That makes sense. All right, Ted,
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: We're gonna shift to the last little section of this gunlet,
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: which is which is like a quick rapid fire session here.
- 1:05:14Speaker 3: Okay, So I'm gonna give you a question.
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: You have to give me your like gut instinct answer
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: one word answers only, and then we're gonna run through
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: like five of these real.
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: Quick one word all right.
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, So I'll give you like an option this
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: or this, and then you choose. All right, so does
- 1:05:32Speaker 3: the moon impact deer movement?
- 1:05:34Speaker 4: Yes? Or no? Uh? I have.
- 1:05:41Speaker 5: Honestly, I have no idea, so.
- 1:05:47Speaker 4: I really don't know.
- 1:05:48Speaker 5: I've paid attention to it. I know this isn't a
- 1:05:50Speaker 5: one word answer, but I've paid attention to it a
- 1:05:54Speaker 5: little bit, but not enough to actually have my opinion
- 1:05:58Speaker 5: on it where I'm like, oh, oh, yeah for sure
- 1:06:01Speaker 5: or no.
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: I think maybe yeah, but I don't know for sure.
- 1:06:10Speaker 4: That's the thing though. Here's the thing.
- 1:06:12Speaker 5: I don't ever pay attention to it because I'm gonna
- 1:06:15Speaker 5: go I'm lucky to do what I do, so I'm like,
- 1:06:18Speaker 5: I'm going hunting every day anyway, so I never really
- 1:06:23Speaker 5: pay that much attention to it. I think if I
- 1:06:25Speaker 5: had limited time to hunt, I would pay a lot
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: more attention to it, just because I think that might
- 1:06:30Speaker 5: give me an advantage of I'm gonna take this day
- 1:06:34Speaker 5: to get out there and hunt or whatever. If there's
- 1:06:37Speaker 5: these if there is a moon phase that's going through
- 1:06:41Speaker 5: that looks good, you know, if I've seen that work before.
- 1:06:45Speaker 5: But yeah, I just don't pay attention to it enough
- 1:06:48Speaker 5: to say yes or no. I guess all right, I'll
- 1:06:50Speaker 5: do one word answers from now on.
- 1:06:52Speaker 4: I'll try.
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: You gotta free pass on that one.
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: Would you take a fifty yard shot at a while,
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: I tell with your bow yes or no?
- 1:07:02Speaker 4: Uh? Say no?
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: But if you if you could only have one of
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: these for the rest of your hunting life, which would
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: you choose? You have to pick either rattling antlers or
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: a grunt tube.
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: Grunt tube.
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: Spannable or fixed blade broadheads for the rest of your life?
- 1:07:24Speaker 4: Oh, fixed blade?
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: Should you stop a moving buck with some kind of
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: sound before shooting?
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: Yes? Or no?
- 1:07:33Speaker 4: Yes?
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: If you could pick only one of these times to scout,
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: so you only get one of these windows for your
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: scouting for the whole year, which would you take? You
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: can scout like winter, spring, you can scout summer, or
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: you can have in season. Which of those three would
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: you pick? You can only pick one?
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: Uh? Probably in season?
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: Yeah, all right.
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: If you had to get a buck killed, doesn't matter
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: how old of a buck, doesn't matter how big a buck.
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: But a buck has to die today and you could
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: pick only one THHP team member to do it. So
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: who's the one who'd give you the very best chance
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: to get any any caliber buck but a buck dead
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: on the ground. Who would be the team member you'd pick?
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: They give you your best bet to get one and dead.
- 1:08:23Speaker 5: Ah gosh, I'll say, Jake.
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: There you go.
- 1:08:32Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: Now, here's one where you don't need to have just
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: one word. You can give me like a full explanation here. Okay,
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: I'm going to tell you that I rule the world.
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: I have control of your hunting privileges now okay, and
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: I'm going to take away your ability to hunt for
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: the rest of your life unless you kill a mature
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: buck this year. You gotta kill a mature buck this year.
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: If you do, then you can keep on hunting. If
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: you don't, you don't get down anymore. This is very
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: high stakes. Here's the problem. You only get one day
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: to do it, and you get one location to do it,
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: like a specific ambush location like this tree or this
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: spot on the ground or whatever. You get to pick
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: what date on the calendar you think would give you
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: your best chance, and then you need to describe to
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: me what that perfect spot would be that you would
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: want to spend this one day at to kill this
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: very important buck.
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: Pick your date, tell me about the spot.
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: It can be an imaginary hypothetical spot, or you could
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: think of an actual place that you think is amazing
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: for that day, and.
- 1:09:35Speaker 5: Describe that I mean, I'll tell you, I mean, I
- 1:09:38Speaker 5: can take up one right away.
- 1:09:41Speaker 4: It's the buck that I shot last year.
- 1:09:42Speaker 5: Actually, it was November eights and we were in a
- 1:09:49Speaker 5: spot where.
- 1:09:54Speaker 4: There is.
- 1:09:56Speaker 5: Some It was just a draw. So it was like
- 1:09:58Speaker 5: a perfect draw. It was probably eighty yards wide, maybe
- 1:10:04Speaker 5: one hundred yards wide, and there was crp out on
- 1:10:10Speaker 5: the left side and then just like some nasty thick
- 1:10:13Speaker 5: stuff on the right side, just like honeysuckle and stuff
- 1:10:18Speaker 5: that you pretty much just have to crawl through, and
- 1:10:21Speaker 5: most or a lot of surrounding area was like that.
- 1:10:24Speaker 4: It was like a lot of.
- 1:10:26Speaker 5: Really really thick cover, basically like stuff you think about
- 1:10:31Speaker 5: going rabbit hunting.
- 1:10:33Speaker 4: And yeah, so that was the day that it was crazy.
- 1:10:39Speaker 4: I mean we.
- 1:10:40Speaker 5: Were seeing bucks left and right, and a couple of
- 1:10:45Speaker 5: really big bucks and then but it was just like
- 1:10:48Speaker 5: the perfect scenario. It was early in the morning, thermals
- 1:10:52Speaker 5: were dropping back down behind us, and no, there wasn't
- 1:10:56Speaker 5: a single deer that got her wind or anything like that.
- 1:11:01Speaker 5: But that would be my that would be my choice
- 1:11:04Speaker 5: of day and and where I would sit because we've
- 1:11:08Speaker 5: seen some deer in that spot years before too, on
- 1:11:15Speaker 5: that same exact day.
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: So yeah, that'd be where I go.
- 1:11:21Speaker 3: What makes what makes that spot so incredible?
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: Do you think it's just because of that thick, nasty
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: cover and then kind of like a relatively tight pinch
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: with the draw? Is it the fact that wind sucks
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: down there?
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: What?
- 1:11:34Speaker 4: Like?
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: What makes that so good? Do you think?
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: I think that.
- 1:11:39Speaker 5: I think that it's a spot where there's oh so
- 1:11:44Speaker 5: much of that thick cover where I don't think, I guess,
- 1:11:50Speaker 5: let me say here, I don't think there's bucks there
- 1:11:55Speaker 5: all year.
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: Round, Like, I don't even think.
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: I don't know that there's necessarily a buck that's living
- 1:11:59Speaker 5: there really in the season or anything, because there's not
- 1:12:02Speaker 5: like a whole bunch of food around or anything like that.
- 1:12:06Speaker 5: It's just tons of super super thick cover all around it.
- 1:12:12Speaker 5: And I think there's a lot of doze in there.
- 1:12:15Speaker 5: So I think there's doze in there probably most of
- 1:12:17Speaker 5: the year. And then as the rut gets ramped up,
- 1:12:23Speaker 5: since there are so many does there, uh you know,
- 1:12:27Speaker 5: there's more does that come into heat and whatever in
- 1:12:30Speaker 5: that specific spot, and then the bucks just kind of
- 1:12:33Speaker 5: have these little travel spots that they kind of work through.
- 1:12:38Speaker 5: And yeah, so I'm trying to think about it even
- 1:12:43Speaker 5: further further in detail than that, But I think that's
- 1:12:46Speaker 5: the main thing. Just like tons of doze in.
- 1:12:48Speaker 4: There, not a.
- 1:12:51Speaker 5: Lot of people around there, and eventually as the rut
- 1:12:59Speaker 5: gets ramped up, I think since there are so many
- 1:13:02Speaker 5: dos there, you get this, you know, movement of or
- 1:13:08Speaker 5: more consistent movement of bucks going through there, checking for
- 1:13:13Speaker 5: checking scent or whatever. Because I mean we were in
- 1:13:16Speaker 5: there for like two days this year, and I don't
- 1:13:19Speaker 5: know that we saw the same buck twice. It was
- 1:13:21Speaker 5: like several different bucks. Every time we'd see one, it
- 1:13:25Speaker 5: was a different by. So yeah, which was that was
- 1:13:28Speaker 5: pretty cool. But that's that's where I'd go if I
- 1:13:30Speaker 5: had to pick a spot to in a day, That's
- 1:13:33Speaker 5: where I go.
- 1:13:35Speaker 3: Sounds sounds of my kind of spot, like this sounds
- 1:13:38Speaker 3: of it. Well, Ted, you passed, you survived the the
- 1:13:42Speaker 3: what would you do? Gauntlet?
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: Before I let you go, though, could you could you
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: give folks just any kind of preview that that folks
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: would be looking forward to? Are there any like really
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: exciting trips you guys have coming up? Is there anything
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: new coming up with THHB any sific projects or places
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: or anything you want us to check out?
- 1:14:03Speaker 5: We got well this year, the hunt that I drew
- 1:14:07Speaker 5: an elk tag this year, so I'm pretty excited about that.
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: And then we.
- 1:14:15Speaker 5: Got some some more unique trips out west, I guess,
- 1:14:21Speaker 5: some Muzzloder hunts and stuff like that coming up. So
- 1:14:25Speaker 5: kind of a kind of a fun fall coming up.
- 1:14:29Speaker 5: It seems like Warb's got an elk tag down in Arizona,
- 1:14:33Speaker 5: so it seems like there's going to be a wide
- 1:14:37Speaker 5: variety of of different types of hunts this year coming up.
- 1:14:42Speaker 5: So I think we're all pretty excited about this fall
- 1:14:45Speaker 5: just because just for that reason, because there's more drawn
- 1:14:50Speaker 5: hunts and like different types of hunts than what we're
- 1:14:54Speaker 5: doing a lot of the time, I guess, So it
- 1:14:57Speaker 5: should be a pretty fun, pretty fun fall, pretty diverse
- 1:15:00Speaker 5: type of hunting, nice going on the whole fall.
- 1:15:04Speaker 3: Nice to have that kind of change, a change of
- 1:15:07Speaker 3: pace sometimes.
- 1:15:07Speaker 4: But yeah, this season, oh for sure, it'll be fun.
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: Well, I'm looking forward to following long Ted. I appreciate
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: to appreciate everything you guys do. Appreciate you taking time
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: here today to talk through all this without a doubt
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: has got me more fired up than even before.
- 1:15:23Speaker 3: I'm ready to get after it. Yeah, anyday, just a
- 1:15:26Speaker 3: few more weeks and it'll be just about here.
- 1:15:28Speaker 4: Oh yeah, for sure. I'm excited about it, all.
- 1:15:31Speaker 3: Right, Ted, Well, thank you and good luck this season.
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: Thank you to you, all right, and that's a wrap
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: for today's show. Appreciate you joining me. I thoroughly enjoyed
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: this chat with Ted. I'm very excited for next week.
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: We have a really really good slate this month of
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: folks that are gonna be running through these hypotheticals. There's
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: gonna be some some other public land warriors kind of
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: like Ted, and then there's gonna be some private land
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: guys and everything in between. So it's gonna be great.
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: Stick around, stay tuned.
- 1:16:00Speaker 3: It's going to be a.
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: Great month, and then before we know it, hunting season
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: is going to be here. So until next time, thanks
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: for tuning in and stay wired to hunt.
- 1:16:10Speaker 4: H
