- 2:34to welcome into the show now, Secretary State of gubernatorial candidate Mac Warner,
- 2:37Good morning, sir. How are you. I'm doing great, good to
- 2:39be with you. Thank you for being here. Now you're in today as
- 2:44part we're talking about Secretary of State stuff today. Now you've been hearing about
- 2:47it for quite a while. The twenty twenty four campaign season, believe it
- 2:51or not, those secretary doesn't officially start actually officially started. I guess what
- 2:54term of the office open at eight thirty or sold this morning, but from
- 2:58now till the twenty seventh of this off the official pilot filing period for West
- 3:01Virginia is underway and you're going to be hitting the road today. More on
- 3:06that coming up a little bit later on. Let's talk about this filing period.
- 3:08It's an exciting time to be a political follower, as I am,
- 3:13sir. It is. To put it in terms you might understand, this
- 3:15would be like your cowboys showing up at the stadium. Okay, this is
- 3:20nice. Here we go, here we go, here we go. There's
- 3:24a line outside my door right now. We've already signed up fifteen people this
- 3:28morning already, and I'm sure it'll be dozens by the time noon hits.
- 3:32Yes, at eight o'clock this morning, we started getting the paperwork together.
- 3:38It's an easy process to come through, fill out that paperwork, drop it
- 3:40off, drop your check off, and then move on out the door.
- 3:44But pick up your candidate guide. So the office is open. We are
- 3:50taking filings for official candidates to run, whether it's state wide offices you know,
- 3:55like your governor, Secretary of state, attorney general of those sorts of
- 3:59state wide, but also those offices like House of Delegates and Senators. Wherever
- 4:03a district crosses a county line, those people file through the Secretary of State's
- 4:08office. Now, your local races can be done at your county clerk's offices,
- 4:12and you can also sign up for these other offices at the county clerks
- 4:15as well. But this is the opening of the campaign season. You can
- 4:19start to apply for your Absity ballots is already underway, so that's why it's
- 4:25good to be talking about this. We want to encourage people to run for
- 4:29office. We want to encourage people to check their registrations. If you haven't
- 4:32registered, to get registered. If you want to change your registration, you
- 4:34can do that now. And all this can either be done in person at
- 4:39our office, your county clerk's office, or at go votewv dot com.
- 4:44We want to encourage people to be poll workers. So basically everything election related
- 4:48is underway. Now that the twenty twenty four years upon a selection year,
- 4:53and the season kicks off today with the filing for office. It's open opening
- 4:59day, like just like you the sports analogies like baseball season, man's it's
- 5:01opening day, Hope springs eternal for candidates. I suppose talking to it.
- 5:05Talking to Westerninia Secretary State Mic Wader this morning on the show. Now,
- 5:10as far as people coming to the capital, I know I talked to one
- 5:13gentleman earlier this morning. It was going to file for house that he planned
- 5:15to be there when you open. That turns into kind of a photo lot
- 5:18from time to time, you know, for people to kind of show up.
- 5:21And I've even seen people when I worked there, Sir, people that
- 5:24would enter different doors because they want to get the angles just right. It's
- 5:28all become part of it. It is, and that's a way with the
- 5:31rise of social media. You take a quick snapshot or a video and you
- 5:35can put that on on social media and let people know what your office you're
- 5:39running for, that you have done it officially. They see you there with
- 5:42your paperwork. It's a nice visual and as we know, that picture speaks
- 5:46a thousand words, so we encourage people to do that. We there was
- 5:49some press in here earlier this morning taking pictures and interviewing candidates. So the
- 5:55office is open. It's your office, it's the people's office. Come on
- 5:58in and be a part of it. Now. The final period runs through
- 6:00the twenty seventh of January. Do you plan on staying open late on that
- 6:05final day? Because I know that used to be a thing where stay open
- 6:09to like midnight or so, and people would kind of watch online to see
- 6:12if anybody did a last minute filing. Is that the plan this time exactly?
- 6:15That is a Saturday, and we open at nine o'clock on that Saturday,
- 6:18and we will be opened until midnight, not only here in Charleston,
- 6:21but also at our hubs in Clarksburg and Martinsburg. We will be doing that
- 6:26as well. You can also file by mail. Now, these applications do
- 6:30have to be notarized, so if you get it notarized, I want to
- 6:32drop it into mail. The key to that is making sure that that envelope
- 6:36has a postmark. It has to be postmarked by midnight on the twenty seventh.
- 6:42And again, all this information can be found on the govowv dot com
- 6:46website, So we encourage people to go to that website and all information whether
- 6:51you want to download an application to run for office, apply to be a
- 6:55poll worker, want to know the key dates when you have to change your
- 6:59registration by that sort of thing, It's all available at go votewv dot com
- 7:03and it's probably a good idea too, And Secretary you mentioned this a little
- 7:06bit earlier. Good idea. To make sure that everything's okay with your registration.
- 7:10You know that you are officially registered of them, because sometimes people hard
- 7:14to believe, but sometimes people don't know if they're active or not. Then
- 7:16you can do that on that website exactly, and you can change that registration
- 7:20up until April twenty third is the voter registration deadline. That's twenty one days
- 7:26prior to the election. That is the cutoff, so the clerks have time
- 7:30to get you know, make sure you're in the database, gets you the
- 7:33right application or the right the ballot when it comes time, send you to
- 7:36the right precinct, that sort of thing. So that's why there's a deadline.
- 7:41And at April twenty third, so you still have plenty of time,
- 7:44but it's best just good and do it right now while we're talking about it,
- 7:46while you're thinking about it. Now you're going to be hitting the road.
- 7:49I understand what's that all about. I am. It's to do just
- 7:54what you and I are doing right here, and that's to get to the
- 7:55different parts of the state. Let people know, encourage folks to pay attention
- 8:00that the election is upon us. If you want to file for office,
- 8:03you've got about twenty days right now to get that done. If you want
- 8:07to apply to be a poll worker, those sorts of things. It's basically
- 8:11just bringing attention to the fact that the election season is upon us. Twenty
- 8:15twenty four, we all know, is the big election year, and it
- 8:18has now started. So I'll be hitting fourteen counties in the next four or
- 8:22five days to talk about this very thing. Just reminding people to update their
- 8:28registrations, encourage new people. Let's say you've just turned eighteen, or you've
- 8:31just moved into the state. We want to encourage those people to register to
- 8:35vote. And it's to educate the public on the resources that are available and
- 8:39the election process. You know yourself about the logic and accuracy testing of the
- 8:46machines. You know, the machines are not attached to the internet, that
- 8:48sort of thing. But if a person goes and pays attention to the transparent
- 8:52opportunities that the county clerks allow them to watch that process, all of that
- 8:58goes towards building confidence in our election system. And that's what this whole discussion
- 9:03is about, is building confidence and getting interest in the election and the election
- 9:07process. Nine seven c to Dave Aland showing five any line Browns you part
- 9:11by Morgan and Morgan, America's largest injury law firm. Well happy filing period
- 9:15sir, as someone as I mentioned that, I said, worked in that
- 9:16office, I know how hectic it's going to be between now and the twenty
- 9:20seventh. We'll check in with you a little bit later. Good luck be
- 9:24safe out on the trail, not only a Secretary State, but also in
- 9:28your candidacy for governor. Wish you the best of luck. We'll talk again
- 9:31soon. Thanks a lot, Thanks David. Great being with you. Secretary
- 9:33State Mac Warner again. The filing period is now opened to open at eight
- 9:37this morning through midnight on the twenty seventh. And it's always interesting to see
- 9:43the photo. And I was telling this story. I'm not going to mention
- 9:46the candidate's name, but when I did work in the office, there was
- 9:50actually a candidate for statewide office that came in and we were streaming the entire
- 9:54thing, you know, where you could watch in real time people coming into
- 9:58the office. This candidate and you know, I'm not following the gay for
- 10:01doing he just wanted to get the best angle. He came in literally from
- 10:05different directions. He would walk in one door and then they would say cut,
- 10:07and then he would go to the other door and he would come in
- 10:11to make sure he got the best angle. It's all part of the show.
- 10:13I guess if you're running for office in West Virginia, it's nine to
- 10:16seventeen. In the heart of West Virginia, there exist a profound force that
- 10:20goes beyond the realm of sports, transcending limitations and fostering the sense of belonging.
- 10:24I'm talking about Special Olympics, a remarkable initiative showcase of the latest episode
- 10:28of West Virginia enriched in collaboration with Huntington, stands as a testament to the
- 10:33power of determination, unity and unwavering support. See a video highlighting the Special
- 10:37Olympics at Facebook dot com. Slash five to eighty whs tech says that the
- 10:41election was stolen and Trump did in fact win the election, How can he
- 10:46run for a third term and what proof do you have that the election was
- 10:48stolen? As a public figure, it is your obligation to expose such corruption.
- 10:52What is your evidence? Of course? Aimed at Secretary of State and
- 10:56goobernatorial candidate Mac Warner. I wouldn't take a break. When we come back,
- 11:00State Democratic Party chair Mike Pushkin will be stopping by the studio. He
- 11:03was one of those I think that was going to go file for office this
- 11:05morning. Plus sub Making Deal is here from Goodwill to talk about their job

- 14:18Conference Center in Vienna, while the one in Charleston happening that's Goodwill Prosperity Center

- 14:26Do you want to mention that our sister station one of seven three The Beat,
- 14:28will be broadcasting live from that one tomorrow, Megan. A lot of
- 14:33work goes into these things, Yeah, a lot of work. Definitely.
- 14:35We got together a few months ago towards the end of the last year and
- 14:39said, what can we do to really kick off a great new year twenty
- 14:41twenty four. I think it's going to be a great year for this community
- 14:43and a great year for all of us. So like, what better than
- 14:46new year, new career. So think something about goodwill is that we're empowering
- 14:50people through employment. So even our own employees are going to be open to
- 14:54go to this job fair if they want to go somewhere out into the community
- 14:56and have a skill set that they have but they're current not utilizing with us,
- 15:01We're going to push them to go ahead and do that. So we
- 15:03want to jump to start them into careers, not just jobs. And we
- 15:07hear all the time making on the news about all the job openings and employers
- 15:09are having a difficult time finding people that want to work or have the proper
- 15:15skill sets or whatever. So if you are, I guess the ball is
- 15:20kind of in the court of the prospective employees at this point because they pretty
- 15:24much have their their choice of jobs that they can be looking at. Yeah.
- 15:28Absolutely, and we think that, and we think, you know,
- 15:31oh, it's just there's so many jobs of plenty out there and why is
- 15:33nobody taking them? A lot of people don't understand with West Virginia. It's
- 15:37the transportation barrier is the problem, you know. I know Delegate Pushkin is
- 15:41familiar with this as well. When you have individuals that they don't have a
- 15:45car and they get outside of that Charleston metro area and don't have the KRT,
- 15:50don't have reliable public transportation. If they don't have that, they're walking
- 15:54to work. So they've got to figure out a way that is you know,
- 15:56economical for their family and that they have the means to get to the
- 16:00job. So that's another way that we wanted to have it over there on
- 16:03the West Side. Individuals can be on Kart transit, they can drive,
- 16:07they can walk, and we can have them with a number of employers that
- 16:10are in the area or maybe close to where they need to be. Yeah,
- 16:12that's something I really hadn't thought about. But once you get out of
- 16:15Charleston Hontyton you start getting into some of these more rural areas, transportation is
- 16:21definitely an issue, right and I have to for my missions team, it
- 16:25would definitely want me to plug two programs that we have that are combating just
- 16:27that, one being Mission Mobile. We retrofitted a bus if you will,
- 16:32that has Wi Fi desk computer capabilities that we're going to take out of the
- 16:37rural areas of West Virginia, outside of the metropolitan areas, where they can
- 16:41sign up for services. We can help them with resume writing, we can
- 16:44help them register for their Snappy and Tea benefits. They can connect to the
- 16:48Wi Fi. They will have information on United Way two one one, and
- 16:52things like that. Another way, we're combating the transportation thing and then also
- 16:56with wheels to work as a program that we're helping people actually purchase vehicles,
- 17:00matching down payments, securing loans for them. You know, there's individuals out
- 17:06there that they just don't know where to start, and we want to be
- 17:07the place that they start trying to make a better life for them and their
- 17:10family. They Valance showing five Adie Line brought to you a part by your
- 17:12local insurance experts from bright Way, the Maze Agency of Jay's Valley. From
- 17:17your home, to your car, even to your pet, bright Way the
- 17:18Maze Agency will customize that perfect insurance plan for you. At bright Way,
- 17:22the Maze Agency, they aren't just agentsy your friends and neighbors called John and
- 17:26Sherry Today three zero four eight one four two five zero nine or is Brightway
- 17:29Maize dot com. What about for employers? Can they still sign up to
- 17:33me? Absolutely? I think that we're still having a registration open. You
- 17:36know, we're pretty understanding. We know how things just get you know,
- 17:38they scroll past the social media feed. Maybe they didn't know about it.
- 17:42So yeah, still accepting those registrations, I think up until the end of
- 17:45today. But yeah, come on by tend to two down here in Charleston,
- 17:48TENDO two up in Parkersburg at the Vienna Grand Point Center. It's going
- 17:52to be a lot of fun and I think a really rewarding day. Another
- 17:56thing that we're going to have at the Charleston one, because I just have
- 17:59a limited staff that I can send up to both areas, is we're going
- 18:02to offer complimentary headshots to people. So if they're wanting to come in and
- 18:04maybe they don't find the job that's right for them, they can come in
- 18:07and get a headshot they can use on their LinkedIn, maybe make part of
- 18:11their resume. A lot of people just don't have that nice, you know
- 18:14picture. I might be using one from a couple of years ago. I
- 18:17might need to walk over there tomorrow and get a compliment. Well, it's
- 18:18kind of cool that you're doing that, because that's something. And along those
- 18:22same lines, a big part of it is resumes too, and so we
- 18:25always tell people when you have these job fairs. I was always told a
- 18:27long time ago, you know, be prepared to go and be interviewed on
- 18:30the spot. So if you've got to, if you've got a resume,
- 18:33bring it now. Is that something that you guys can offer, like resume
- 18:37buildings. We have resume yeah, we have resume writing services. We have
- 18:41career matching services. We have something called open enrollment each week on Wednesdays where
- 18:45they can come in get matched to any of the programs that they need for
- 18:48US soft skills, if you know, if somebody needs to learn how to
- 18:52work with a computer, we have courses through Coursera and Google. We're truly
- 18:56the one stop shot for career development and workforce development for this area. Can
- 19:00you talk about or do you have a list of some of the employers you
- 19:03have signed up or do you have that available? If you don't, that's
- 19:04fine on this podcast. Actually no, We've got Charleston Property Restoration, We've
- 19:08got State Farm there tomorrow, a Goodwill themselves, a deco. I'm looking
- 19:14at all the different ones West Virginia tax divisions, so stay West Virginia is
- 19:18even coming to help find some employees for us, so we're excited. Is
- 19:22there a place where people can learn more? I know I've got that.
- 19:23I've posted the uh, I've done the poster on my social media and I'll
- 19:27make sure I do that again later today and tomorrow. But is there a
- 19:30place for people? Yeah? Absolutely, follow us on social media on Facebook.
- 19:33We're at Goodwill kV and there's an event on Facebook you can follow has
- 19:37all the information. Any employers or maybe wanting to sign up last minute,
- 19:41you can feel free to email us at Marketing at GOODWILLKAV dot com. We
- 19:44can get you signed up. But follow us on socials and I think we'll
- 19:47have some fun things going on tomorrow. We'll have The Beat will be there
- 19:51tomorrow broadcasting live, so it's gonna be a good day. Yeah. I
- 19:53think it is well now again the one in Charleston intended too with the Goodwill
- 19:56Prosperity Center, and as I said, is make it said. The Beat
- 19:59will be broad asking to go hang out with Woody and the folks. So
- 20:02I don't know if it's gonna be Woody or g money or both. But
- 20:03com hang out with me and whoever's they, that's all. That's all that
- 20:07matters right there, It's Megan's world. Pushkin, We're just living mega deal.
- 20:11I appreciate you being here. Thanks a lot, and good luck with
- 20:15everything tomorrow. Okay, thanks all right, making deal again from Goodwill,

- 20:37for Pinnacle Consultants because what you don't know can hurt your state. Democratic Party
- 20:41chair Delegate Mike Pushkin is here. Good morning, sir, Good morning.
- 20:45How are you. I'm fine. It is the most wonderful time of the
- 20:48year. Session starts in two days. It does. We gavel in Wednesday
- 20:52at noon, and of course the State of the State address will be that
- 20:56evening. So, yeah, the legislature is coming back into session, and
- 21:00the House and Senate Democrats, although we are small in number, we are
- 21:07more united than ever and we have some issues that we want to bring up
- 21:11and some things that we need to do, and hopefully they can be a
- 21:14bipartisan issues and we can get some things done. Let's talk about what's on
- 21:17that Democrats wish list first and foremost. I think I think most would agree
- 21:22with me. The biggest problem we have here in West Virginia. Everything can
- 21:25be related back to a people problem, and we simply don't have enough people
- 21:30here. We have workforce issues in West Virginia. We have issues of finding
- 21:34folks to work in the public sector as well as the private sector. When
- 21:38we see we have a shortage of teachers, we have a shortage of correctional
- 21:41officers, we have a shortage of the child protective service workers. We have
- 21:45a shortage of people in West Virginia. So what we want to do is
- 21:49make it an easier choice for people to stay here or to relocate here.
- 21:56And that means helping people, you know, first of all, keep more
- 21:59of the money to live here. So whether that's supporting the pay raises to
- 22:04offset the p i A rate increases for public our public workers, also doing
- 22:10something to actually address the p i A issue, like find a permanent funding
- 22:15source for that so we don't need to continually raise the rates on our public
- 22:18workers. That includes a cost of living adjustment for our retired public workers who
- 22:23haven't seen a real cost of living adjustment in far too long. That means
- 22:29making it accessible for people to get childcare so young parents can can get to
- 22:33work and have the time to get to work. It's a whole host of
- 22:37issues all about making it easier for people to live here. That also means
- 22:41it also means empowering people to make decisions for themselves. So we also strongly
- 22:48support constitutional amendment protecting reproductive rights. And no matter how you feel about the
- 22:52issue, I think that it's important to have the people decide may have people
- 22:57make those decisions for themselves, so we want it to the ballot. I
- 23:00want to talk about childcare for a moment. I know Senator Wolffel, I
- 23:03think it was out of cabal County is proposing or he was talking about maybe
- 23:08doing some sort of a child like a like a tax credit childcare. Your
- 23:14thoughts on that, Yeah, I've supported one hundred and ten percent. It's
- 23:18a big we have a huge childcare crisis in this state. It's and it's
- 23:22it's it makes it hard for people to uh to stay here, live here,
- 23:27work here, raise a family here. Makes it hard when they don't
- 23:30they don't have access to childcare. So yeah, it's a it's a crisis
- 23:33that needs to be addressed, Senator, Senator Blair. I know on Friday
- 23:37there was an event Mike over the Culture Center, kind of a you know,
- 23:41a little we'll get together the press called the Legislative look Ahead. Yeah,
- 23:45yeah, look for the prep with the Press Association, so on and
- 23:48so forth over there. One of the things that he mentioned there and he's
- 23:49mentioned other places too, is a possibly a reinstatement of the death penalty in
- 23:55West Virginia, particularly for those that deal fentanyl your rights. I cannot conscious
- 24:00support that. I find it. I cannot support that. I will never
- 24:04support the death penalty. We want to make it easier for people to live
- 24:08here. That's what we want, not to die here, not Yeah,
- 24:11yeah, I can't. I can. I cannot support the death even for
- 24:15even for those who do deal fentanyl. We don't have the death penalty in
- 24:19West Virginia. No matter how horrible the crime is, the most is life
- 24:23in prison. I do not support the death penalty, uh TEX says,
- 24:29Ask your guest. If the legislature can address a cooperative agreement with neighboring states
- 24:33for a combined governmental insurance program that addresses the cost and services for insurance or
- 24:40like for p E I A, that's uh, you know, I,
- 24:42you know, that's something we should be looking at everything, because uh,
- 24:45I think what we have now is just a failure of of our of our
- 24:49lawmakers to make tough decisions on on creating a U and designating a permanent funding
- 24:56stream for that that agency. I've always said all along, we have to
- 25:03It's not just about patching it up with one time funds. We have to
- 25:07create a permanent funding stream for that. And there's several different ways you could
- 25:11do that. Twenty eight minutes away from Tama, Dave Allen showing five eighty
- 25:14live right to part by general hardware number of wind field from kitchens to paints,
- 25:17the deck, straight framed, would roofie, metal and everything else you
- 25:21made it. You'll find it a general hardware and number of Winfield i't want
- 25:22to go back to something you said there had to do with reproductive rights.
- 25:26You were saying that you would like to have the abortion issue put on the
- 25:30ballot in West Virginia. Yes, okay, do you think how do you
- 25:33think that will go? I think it would go like it has gone in
- 25:37every other state, and I think people would would vote to return to the
- 25:41rights that we had, which is basically the rights under Roe v. Wade,
- 25:48even in red states when it's been put on the ballot, that's how
- 25:52that's how it's gone. I don't know of a state that voted for it
- 25:56that didn't do that. Now people will say, yeah, well, the
- 25:57people voted on it in twenty eighteen. It was a completely different question.
- 26:02What was voted on in twenty eighteen included public funding and there are some people
- 26:08out there, imagine, who are pro choice but still maybe fiscally more fiscally
- 26:14conservative, that would vote against that. This is a completely different question.
- 26:17We're talking about is to protect a protection of reproductive rights. And it's worded.
- 26:22What we're proposing is worded much the same way that the Ohio Amendment was
- 26:26worded, which is really a return to protections under row. So there are
- 26:30limitations, There are certain restrictions. Reason was what this country had for fifty
- 26:37years. Mike. I'll be honest with you, I don't think the Republicans
- 26:41want that on the ballot because I think they know which way it'll go.
- 26:44Now Again, I know that there may be people listening right now that think
- 26:47that maybe all Republicans are pro life for whatever it is that you want to
- 26:52call it. But I don't think there's a reason why it's not been placed
- 26:56in a simpler language on the ballot in West Virginia as it was in Ohio.
- 27:00In my opinion, well, I think allowing people to vote on it
- 27:03is the way to go. It's hard to argue against that. To simply
- 27:06let the people make that decision for themselves hard to argue with. I'm for
- 27:11the people making that decision for themselves. Tex says would say the circus is
- 27:15back in town, but that's an insult to circuses, says the text.
- 27:19Just leave that one of the load. Mike. It was reported on Friday
- 27:23that your counterpart of the Republican Party side, the chair of the GOP L
- 27:29J. Mccardial possibly step me down maybe to run for another office. Won't
- 27:33be official until the party meets for their winter meeting to Charleston coming up on
- 27:37the twentieth of this month. Any thoughts on that for you, Well,
- 27:40I wish her well and I respect her decision. I still will go back
- 27:45to the I believe it was an interview she did on this show where she
- 27:48said, you know, if you don't believe the same way we do,
- 27:51then move. I feel exactly the exact opposite that I want people. Whether
- 27:55I agree with him or not, I want people to move to West Virginia.
- 27:57We need people in West Virginia. I felt that the statement by she's
- 28:03still the chair, yeah es stuff down yet. So yeah, the statement
- 28:06from the chair of the West Virginia GOP was really the exact opposite of the
- 28:11message we should be sending out to the rest of the world, the rest
- 28:14of the country. We want people to move here. We don't want just
- 28:17people who agree with us. We want people. And if we're not attracting
- 28:21young people to this state, and if young people are leaving this state and
- 28:23droves, what kind of future does this state have. Everything we do during
- 28:29the legislative session, everything we do should be run through the prism of well,
- 28:33this bring young people back to West Virginia, because if we don't have
- 28:37that, we don't have a future here. Well, Mike, now,
- 28:40with the filing period is officially underway, opened up at eight o'clock this morning,
- 28:44when can we expect to start hearing some names of those on the Democratic
- 28:47Party they'll be running for some of these offices, be at House or or
- 28:49the constitutional officeholders. When are we going to hear some of these names?
- 28:53Well, I imagine you'll here some today and as it goes on throughout the
- 28:56filing period. Actually, I'm going to go file. I don't know if
- 29:00this is breaking news or not, because I don't think of it. Yeah,
- 29:04when I leave here, I'm going to uh go fill out the paperwork
- 29:08and I'm going to file to run for re election for the fifty fourth House
- 29:11district here in Kanaw County. You had opposition last time? Uh? Did
- 29:17you have opposition in the primary? Did you last time? No? I
- 29:19didn't have any opposition did the general? Yeah? Yeah? Okay? So
- 29:25does it ever and I mean this as uh in the best possible way,
- 29:29does it ever get frustrating? Though? For you as the at the head
- 29:33of the State Democratic Party Chair that the numbers just keep getting worse and worse
- 29:37for the Democrats. Is there ever a time that might And I know you're
- 29:40a fighter, I know you're a good dude, But I mean, is
- 29:41there ever a time I might push can discuss man, I just don't know
- 29:45about this. We're up it's yeah, it's no. It's no secret that
- 29:49we're up against a whole lot. I think there's a real misconception of what
- 29:53of what Democrats really stand for. And that part is frustrating because I know
- 29:57what we really stand for. We stand for basic working class values that people
- 30:03should get paid living wage, they should be safe at the workplace, we
- 30:08should have good schools for everybody's kids, we should have good roads for all
- 30:14of us to drive. But basically, what Democrats believe in, what we've
- 30:15always believed. I think it was best stated by the late Senator Paul Wellstone.
- 30:22We all do better when we all do better. That's what Democrats believe.
- 30:26So yeah, it is frustrating when we get misrepresented as something that we're
- 30:29not tech, says Dave. Thanks to Della get Pushkin for standing against the
- 30:33death penalty in West Virginia, supporting the death penalty requires complete trust in the
- 30:37justice system, which is a disaster in West Virginia. One individual loan fred
- 30:41Zane proves why public death penalty is wrong. That is a very good point.
- 30:45That's a great two word argument against the death penalty. That's fred Zaye.
- 30:51You can't appeal something a final decision like that. There are times when
- 30:59they get it wrong, and God forbid, an innocent person is put to
- 31:03death by the government. I just in good conscience, I cannot. My
- 31:08own religious and spiritual beliefs would prevent me from voting for that. I will
- 31:15never support that. A couple of quick tests where we let you go ask
- 31:17Pushkin, what do you support caning like they do in Singapore for punishment?
- 31:23I don't know. Dave, No to recreational marijuana in West Virginia. Too
- 31:29much addiction in West Virginia in the nation, simply common sense. Well,
- 31:33okay, I'm glad that your Texter brought that up. Another thing I would
- 31:37like to see on the ballot, and I think that many of the House
- 31:40Democrats are going to bring up if I believe, actually I believe we're united,
- 31:44and we would also like to see a constitutional amendment that would legalize cannabis
- 31:49or adult use only and let them once again, let however you feel about.
- 31:55Then your texter who just texted in would have the right to go out
- 31:57and vote against it, but the people who support it would be able to
- 32:01go out and vote for it. And then you're talking about a permanent funding
- 32:05stream for pei A. That's one of the things you could do with some
- 32:08of the revenue from that. Final texts before we let you go, what
- 32:13rights will Republicans take away from women this session? Stay tuned. Women need
- 32:16to get out and vote or risk losing your rights. I got a better
- 32:21idea than I think women should get out and run. The filing period started
- 32:24this morning. There was a crowd up there up at the Secretary of State's
- 32:29office. I'm going to go up there later and I'm going to file.
- 32:30But I think it's a good idea for women, not just to get out
- 32:32and vote, get out and run, all right. One final one.
- 32:37You cannot support killing of a person who has committed hideous crime. Shit.
- 32:40You could support killing innocent babies and endanger the health of that mother. I
- 32:46support a woman's right to choose. Well, that's not how I see it.
- 32:52Well, good luck to you this as you're going to be heading back
- 32:57over to the capital to sign up for office and good luck and getting all
- 33:00these positions, getting people to run for all these business. Does this mean
- 33:02I get to come back on as a candidate because you come on down,
- 33:06you have to do the meet We're gonna start doing the Meet the Candidates segment.
- 33:09You get to come on and I get to ask you questions like I
- 33:12don't already know the answers to you. So tell us about Mike Pushkin.
- 33:15Yeah, well, I'm gonna have to study up on that. Thank you,
- 33:19I'll get back to you. I'll get back to you. Don't just
- 33:21don't talk about the NFL because you know you're a Jets fan, all right.
- 33:24I was happy to see that. I don't want to upset anybody.
- 33:27But the Dolphins, as good of a season they had, they didn't win
- 33:30the division. They lost the division last night. But the Cowboys are in.
- 33:34Cowboys wondered and they were you know, you thought the Eagles had it
- 33:36locked up all the It's uh, it's it's fun to watch. I like
- 33:39watching football, even when my team's out of it. I think with the
- 33:44Jets out that the two teams I think, and my NFC team and my
- 33:46AFC team that I could I can root for without you know, without really
- 33:52feeling, you know, horrible about myself. I can root for the for
- 33:54the Cleveland Browns, and I can root for the Detroit Lions. I've got
- 33:58I think, how can you be a I got friends and family members that
- 34:00are big Browns fans, and Steve Animal, my man upstairs at the Mountain,
- 34:04a big, big Detroit fan. So if the Cowboys don't win it,
- 34:10then I'm one. Cowboys are looking good. They're the only team that
- 34:15is not. I don't believe they've lost a game at home. No,
- 34:16they're sixteen, they've won the last sixteen in a row at home, and
- 34:19they're playing at home, and we play the Packers this week at h I
- 34:22like their chances in that. All right, get out of here, get

- 37:02who did sales for some of our competition over at ELM Communications that would
- 37:06be Rock one O five at a Mix, died suddenly over the weekend.
- 37:09I worked with Barry at LM from roughly twenty sixteen twenty seventeen until I left
- 37:15there in early twenty twenty Barry was just one of those guys that everyone loved.
- 37:19He was life of any party, overall good guy. He died unexpectedly
- 37:24over the weekend. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Barry's family and all
- 37:28of his friends, and also the people over at LM Communications as well.
- 37:32He was one of the good ones and he will certainly be Miss Charleton Mayor
- 37:37Amy Shoulder, good one is here. Welcome to the show, Mayre,
- 37:38thank you so much. Also former Senator John pat Fanning, who was actually
- 37:45a very good friend of my grandmother's. THEUS Francis O'donald Blatnick. You know,
- 37:51I always have to say her name in full because that's what you do,
- 37:55as she served in the House and in the Senate when he was there.
- 37:59And I know a lot of families at the State House lost a person
- 38:04that they worked very closely with for so many years doing good work for West
- 38:07Virginia and especially southern West Virginia. Did you have a good holiday season?
- 38:10I did. My boys were home. It was wonderful. You forget how
- 38:15much they eat, You forget how much laundry you have to do. It's
- 38:21just two it's not that much. But when it turns to four and they're
- 38:23you know, my boys are as. I always love to say, the
- 38:27perfect size, refrigerator size. So it was lovely. It was lovely time
- 38:31to reflect and you know, how could you not have a good holiday season
- 38:36in Charleston. It was probably the time of year in five years, Dave,
- 38:43you know, with a ball I mean, I know you've reported on
- 38:45this too, but you're at the ballpark when you have one hundred and twenty
- 38:47thousand people from forty plus different states come to your city writing to me,
- 38:53tagging me, texting, emailing, saying hey, thanks, You're going to
- 38:58do this again next year, right, this is coming back. So with
- 39:01Holly Jolly Brawley and that influx, what we're seeing now is, you know,
- 39:07more more interest in development around that November, December and early January,
- 39:13which is great. Baron. I want to talk to you about the last
- 39:17week it made news. You had the city council meeting the tabling of the
- 39:20proposed resolution that someone wanted calling for a seats fire in the Israeli jimas Ward.
- 39:25Now you and you and council offered a table that resolution. You care
- 39:29to comment on that? Well, first and foremost on December twenty second,
- 39:34twenty members of Council, including myself, sent a letter to Shelley Moore,
- 39:37Capitol Senator, Senator Capitol Senator Mansion, and Commerce Woman Miller asking for their
- 39:45assistance. We had a wonderful group of folks from our Muslim community, inter
- 39:51Jewish community come to I didn't even know they were going to be there,
- 39:55but super happy to see them on that eighteenth Monday, the eighth teenth,
- 40:00and had asked us to do something. There was an email that was sent
- 40:07saying hey, from somebody outside of the City of Charleston, saying hey,
- 40:09would you would you do a resolution or something like that? And what council
- 40:15members and I felt most of the time, we don't do resolutions of that
- 40:19sort, but letters, especially when it talks about things outside of our control.
- 40:23You know, we've done it with the PSC and things like that,
- 40:25so outside of the purview if you will, of city government. But that
- 40:30a letter of support not only for our Muslim community here, our local Muslim
- 40:35community and our Jewish community, saying that we wanted peace, that we love
- 40:39both of these communities. We know that people are hurting, and so really
- 40:45that was the reason behind the letter is to show our support in what we
- 40:51believed. And when I say we, I mean the majority of council believed
- 40:55that that was the best way that we could show our support through city government.
- 41:01And so it was a you know, we worked a long time on
- 41:05that letter and it wasn't just me. It was a lot of folks in
- 41:07this community who worked on that letter to show our support. And that was
- 41:14on the twenty second. Were were you surprised by the reaction as part of
- 41:20the council meeting because there were some people, I mean you had to had
- 41:22to go into recess and you got a little out of hand there. I
- 41:27wasn't there, but I did see the coverage. I've got a little bit
- 41:30out of hand, people chanting shame and things of that nature. Did that
- 41:32surprise you, Well, you know, this is what I believe, just
- 41:36as I believe then everybody. That's everybody's right. That's people's right to do
- 41:43that. And so shame on us when we start saying no, you can't
- 41:46speak, or no you can't say things. Of course you can't. Now
- 41:50we have to conduct business. That's why always at the beginning of council most
- 41:54folks and you know this and your reporters know this because they're there reporting or
- 41:59they listen in on line, which you can now too. Five years ago.
- 42:02It was the very first meeting that I started. You can see it
- 42:06online, you can hear it online. Because we should be transparent and so
- 42:08we always include and invite folks to come out and speak, and so you
- 42:13know that is part of the process, and that is part of good government
- 42:17and open government. That it doesn't matter if somebody agrees with me or not.
- 42:22They have the right to speak, whether it whether I like it or
- 42:27not, whether it hurts my feelings or not, whether I think it is
- 42:29truthful or not. That's everyone's right. Tick says, Please inform the mayor
- 42:36and ask her to inform the protesters from the city council media that there was
- 42:39a cease fire until November twenty eighth that ended when Hamas attacked Israeli troops.
- 42:45So those people need to contact AMASA demand that they end this, not Israel.
- 42:49I'm going to kind of go along Mayor with what former Mayor Danny Jones
- 42:52said on the show on Hoppy last week, and I kind of have a
- 42:58tendency to agree with that, and that when it comes to city government,
- 43:01no matter what the city is, fix my potholes, you know, work
- 43:06on transportation, work on things of that nature. I don't know that it's
- 43:09the place of city government, in my opinion, to get involved in things
- 43:13like that. Yeah, I hear you. And while that is a policy
- 43:16you're talking about policy, the reason why we wanted to send the letter and
- 43:21that we wanted to take some bit of action, Dave, is that when
- 43:24members of our community are hurting, we want them to know that we are
- 43:30with them. And so, yes, well, I tend to agree with
- 43:32you. This is something that our senators and are representative our congressional it's kind
- 43:39of in their purview, right, It's it's in their view. Our view
- 43:44is still at a local level, taking care of our family members and friends
- 43:47who are hurting, and to show our support that way, not necessarily to
- 43:52do resolutions demanding something on a federal or international level be done, but to
- 43:58say to our families, members and our friends, which, by the way,
- 44:01those folks in their crowd, they are very close friends of mine,
- 44:05very close friends of mine, so many of them. I understand their pain.
- 44:09I am sad with them, I'm sad for them. But again,
- 44:16we just felt the best way was to do that through a letter, and
- 44:21I think it was a beautiful letter and I'm glad we sent it. Nine
- 44:24to fifty one. We'll take a break. We're right back after this on

- 46:30Texas, the mayor and city council did the right thing. Municipalities don't
- 46:34do foreign policy period, Texas. There was a ceasefire before the seventh of
- 46:39October, says a TEXTA Texas says, I would love that the mayor would
- 46:43encourage Brawley trees to stay decorated the entire stretch they're advertised to be up.
- 46:46It's sad when they're a few are naked early. I know, I know,
- 46:51I know. Boy, we wish we could keep them up all the
- 46:53time, but mother nature sometimes gets in the way. And speaking of mother
- 46:58nature, if you don't mind, Dave, yeah, you know, people
- 47:00ask me all the time. Listen. When I became mayor, I knew
- 47:04that I would have to do a lot of things. I did not know
- 47:06that I would have to keep my eye on the sky and focused on our
- 47:09weather patterned systems more than half the half of the time during the winter.
- 47:14But mother Nature, she put a lot of ice on our roads this morning.
- 47:17So there was slick and so I sound like a lot of people were
- 47:22expecting me O, No, they weren't. And I was up and out
- 47:24of the house early early this morning as I normally am at dark, and
- 47:29it was very foggy, it was very slick. But most important to let
- 47:32folks know, listen, there's a reason why we have seventeen trucks and six
- 47:37thousand tons of salt ready to go at a moment's notice, because welcome to
- 47:42West Virginia. Welcome to beautiful Appalachia. Mother Nature she has her you know,
- 47:45her thumb on what she wants to do at the time. And I
- 47:49will say starting just to give everybody fore warning is fair warning. At least.
- 47:52This is what we have right now, is a report starting at Dave
- 47:55at one a m. Upcoming here on Tuesday. We don't know how long
- 48:00it's going to last just yet, Hello weather, fifty mile hour winds,
- 48:06really heavy rains. It's going to be it's going to be a stretch,
- 48:09which means for us. We prepare now, we get the trucks ready to
- 48:13go out, debris falling power lines and so fore warning is fair warning.
- 48:17I don't know how long it's going to last, but hey, listen,
- 48:20if you're working shiftwork, if you're a nurse, if you're coming in late
- 48:22about one am, and this is not a snow and ice issue, this
- 48:25is high winds. Well yeah, I mean it's rain and high winds right
- 48:29now, which can be very treacherous and very damaging. So please, so
- 48:34please prepare, take caution. If you're sending a kid back late to school
- 48:37this week, I know a lot of kids are not going back to a
- 48:37Wednesday. If you're sending somebody back, please please be mindful of some of
- 48:43the weather that we have coming in. Tex says, why are you wasting
- 48:45so much time discussing the war? You just said it doesn't matter to local
- 48:47government. Well, in all fairness, I'm the one that brought that up,
- 48:51Texas. Let's talk about the accepts of paid employees and the chief of
- 48:53police issue. Where are we in search for a police chief? Yeah?
- 48:59Sure, so for the first time ever in the history of the city of
- 49:02Charleston that we can tell I'm actually doing interviews in an application process, so
- 49:08that application is still open online. As a matter of fact, last night
- 49:13at home, I took a stack of I want to say, thirteen fourteen
- 49:19applications, some in the department, some in the state, some out of
- 49:23state, across the country of folks who want to be the next chief of
- 49:28police. As I had mentioned many times before, I'm taking my time on
- 49:32this. I want to be thorough in this process. And you know,
- 49:36really, this is a process that we should have changed probably a long time
- 49:38ago, and I'm happy to do it. It's going to be an intensive
- 49:44process. Listen, when you're running for I don't care if it's city council
- 49:47or mayor or senator, you have that public scrutiny, and while the mayor
- 49:52ultimately gets to decide who is our chief of police. I'm putting a little
- 49:59bit more out, a little bit more, a lot more time and attention
- 50:02through this application process and this interview process. So we're right in the middle
- 50:07of it. Applications close on the fifteenth. You can do it online.
- 50:14I think it's the fifteenth, which is next Monday, Dave, and then
- 50:16the week following I'll be doing interviews next two weeks following, depending on the
- 50:21people's schedule, and then I'll make a decision, you know, right thereafter.
- 50:25But Dave alan choll on five, any, I brought to you a
- 50:28part by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds. Maybe one a
- 50:30time, but we're always taking baseball over the ballpark. Take a look at
- 50:34their schedules whatnot on their website. All right, So the legislature gets going
- 50:37later this week, Mayor. I think sometimes people don't take into account that
- 50:40the decisions made under the dome and how they can impact cities, especially larger
- 50:45cities like the capital city of Charleston. What are you looking at as first
- 50:47session goes? Well, you know, by the way, somebody ask when
- 50:51are you announcing your bid for governor? I am well, I'll say this,
- 50:57My State of the city is going to be done on the sixteenth there
- 51:01and about so in January. Yes, we always look eyes to the Gold
- 51:06Dome, right, what are they saying in the State of the state.
- 51:07That always is the governor's agenda and his department. So we always make sure
- 51:12that we're looking our state of the city will be done as well. And
- 51:15you know, first and foremost and you know, just as Mike said on
- 51:19the way out the door, hey I'll call you later. Hey, I'll
- 51:20talk to you later. Having good relationships and open relationships with the folks here
- 51:25from the House and Senate who represent us, making sure those lines of communication
- 51:30are good, working with the West Virginia municipal lig on things that they're hearing,
- 51:35or senators or delegates or the Governor's office that are reaching out to them
- 51:37to say, hey, we want to we want to work with the cities
- 51:40on this issue or this issue. So always it is we are very intimately
- 51:45involved in those conversations, and but it first starts with a you know,
- 51:52an office visit. I'll tell you we've had great relationships with Roger Hanshaw,
- 51:58who has always had a wonderful open door I see, really good speaker in
- 52:01terms of listening to our municipalities. All right now, you said your state
- 52:05in the city is to come up on the y. Yeah, I think
- 52:07that I have the date right because it's Martin Luther King on Monday, and
- 52:10I think it's going to be on the sixth time. We'll be listening.
- 52:13Mayor's always, I appreciate you being here, Glad to be here. Thank
- 52:15you, miss Jill. Thanks a lot coming up on the show tomorrow.
- 52:17We've got two googlenatorial candidates on the show tomorrow. Patrick Morrissey is on the
- 52:21show tomorrow as well as the Libertarian candidate for Governor, Eric at Coolenich will
- 52:25be on the show tomorrow so well. Plus tomorrow's the tenth anniversary of the
- 52:28water crisis in Charleston. Jeff Jenkins from the newsroomalll join us and former Mayor
- 52:31Danny Jones will be on to talk about that. Hoppy is coming up.
