- 8:03asked my parole officer. It's the guy I'm working for. Very well.
- 8:07You said something about George Presnel, the captain hines a Broadway Division. All
- 8:11right, that's right. Well do I get a break? What about George
- 8:16Presne he's in time again. Yeah, we know that you want him,
- 8:20don't you. He's handing the stuff again. Yeah, he's working with Guntain,
- 8:24Talbot and Almer Brashing. Three of them are pushing for seventeen months.
- 8:30But we know of stuffs from Turkey and Greece, tests out anywhere from thirty
- 8:33to fifty percent. You've got half a killer it down the lab right now?
- 8:37Yeah, get in in some water. I help you soup shure.
- 8:50Try there. I don't want to sell up two more years for popping some
- 8:56guy in a bar. I've did eleven out of my two more years.
- 9:01Had break me up? Do I get a chance. We'll talk about that
- 9:05later on. I go on with this. Hey, I know George President
- 9:09pretty good. Have you been seeing him? Larry? I ran into him
- 9:11a couple of times last year, but there was nothing wrong. He just
- 9:15ran in him. You sure that said the whole thing. Last week I
- 9:18ran into him again and we got to talking. He asked me if I
- 9:22had any contact. He said he had a new ship and of pretty good
- 9:24stuff. And he asked me if I knew any buyers. You know where
- 9:28pushers looking for supply, working with old timers like guns, the tablet and
- 9:31brashy. He asked you you never worked in dope, Larry? What are
- 9:35you trying to give us? I know it sounds screwy. You don't expect
- 9:37us to believe it? To him? Well, it's true. Didn't set
- 9:39help me, and I think I got the picture on it now. Maybe
- 9:43I'm wrong, but presdo's handling this load by yourself without gunter and brashy.
- 9:48What makes you think that he told me to keep it on my hat.
- 9:50He gave me a phone number and said to talk only to him, and
- 9:54he wants you to help him get rid of it? Is that it?
- 9:56He offered me the chance to just look at to you? And what'd you
- 9:58tell him? I didn't want to take no chance, but I didn't want
- 10:01him to think I was turning up my nose, so I just told him
- 10:05i'd keep my eyes open. Doesn't seem right him asking you, Lory,
- 10:07not when he's got his own contacts. Now, how long have you known
- 10:11him? You're a good friend of his. I met him when I was
- 10:13doing my bit up there. We used to meet in the library. But
- 10:16I known him abou him since I was a kid and he was running boost
- 10:20then and we all know what he made and now he lived harry a lot
- 10:24of people now, George Fresnow. A lot of people met him in prison.
- 10:28I still don't buy him asking you to make contacts. You know what
- 10:31happened over there, didn't she? What do you mean? I guess he
- 10:33really wouldn't have had nothing to do with me unless I hadn't happened. You
- 10:37see worsin a diner all about three weeks before George got out, two guys
- 10:41jumped him. Yeah, we know. They'd began waking over him with butter
- 10:43knife. You know the treatment. George is maybe sixty years old. He
- 10:48couldn't handle them. I happened to be standing right by. Huh, I
- 10:50give my hand. I hope for the gods, and I don't know.
- 10:52The guy might have been killed. I guess he liked me for anybody else
- 10:56in on her there were a lot of guys around, but nobody else has
- 11:00helped him. You know he wasn't liked. Yeah, but you helped him,
- 11:03that's right. I helped him. That made you a pretty good friend
- 11:07of his. Huh, that's right? And how you want to help us
- 11:09get him? Yeah? How do you suppose Georgia feel if he knew you
- 11:11were down here talking? Was like this, Larry, who cares? How
- 11:15he feels don't care. Maybe some of his friends, Lara, those guys
- 11:18who aren't Heroin ain't got no friends. Gun to Talbot and Brashy. You
- 11:24could get them too. They don't worry me neither stuff. All it worries
- 11:28me is keeping my job toting them centuries a cemit every day. I don't
- 11:33want to go back to prison. I had enough stepped out of line to
- 11:35that when I smacked that guy. I'm willing to get back in line and
- 11:39stay there. Guy's got to smoke. Sure, Thank you now. George
- 11:50asked me for a contact to a lost some of the stuff. He wouldn't
- 11:54ask everybody. You know that a plant worker for you would help a lot.
- 11:58George is a smart opera it in. It might take a long time
- 12:01for you to get somebody in there. I could get in right away and
- 12:03set him up. He's going up once done income text and once done caring
- 12:09concealed weapons. He never had a big wrap, but I know you want
- 12:11him. Listen to me. George lives over on Palace Drive. He's got
- 12:16an apartment, of course, two thousand a month are in pretty nice place.
- 12:20Books, television, couple of servants. I live on Evert place forty
- 12:24five bucks a month, and I'm nothing to get it to get it,
- 12:28but I got a wife and two kids there when I get home. I
- 12:31like living like this. Captain, give me a chance to stay with him,
- 12:35please say, Captain, please, Harry is Waldough. I want to
- 12:46package on Larn Sawyer. Yeah everything, check the pro office. Try ride
- 12:54away? Yeah bye. If you're cleaning off, we'll give you a break.
- 13:00Okay, Ben, come on, wait, well what happens now?
- 13:03We're still under arrest for a soul Larry, we'll book you in for the
- 13:07night. Oh Ben, Hi, everybody's your office? Okay, get Sawyer
- 13:31up? All right? Hi from us Pete. Yeah, they got it
- 13:39all man, All right, boys, let's get this overwhere. Captain Walter's
- 13:46decided to use Lawrence Sawyer on this. Sawyer has convinced this that he has
- 13:50the confidence that George Price know and can be useful in making the arrest.
- 13:54Say is willing to do anything we ask him. Now, all of you
- 13:58men have been pulled off your car to sign to concentrate on this case.
- 14:01Looks like the first break we've had in trying to get Presno, you'll do
- 14:05nothing but work on this until it's completed. What all the teams be uh
- 14:09Hasher and Kwine, Crockett and Murphy, Islander and Castello, Vickers and Man
- 14:15okay too. He'll be with Sawyer twenty four hours a day. He's going
- 14:18to be in danger right away. We don't want him to get hurt,
- 14:22and we don't want any of you to get hurt. Oh, he's given
- 14:26us permission to tap his telephone line. Technical will have two men atters home
- 14:30all the time. We don't have to worry about that part of it.
- 14:31Two others will be at the cement works. The district attorney drew up these
- 14:35sheets, Pete. Yeah, four charges. We might be able to get
- 14:41Presno on importing, concealing, selling, or transporting. To make any of
- 14:46these charges stick, we have to arrest him with the goods on his person.
- 14:50I remember that, no arrests, no action on our part until George
- 14:54Presno's got something on his person that may happen tomorrow, may happen a year
- 15:00from tomorrow, but we're gonna stop him this time, okay, Ben,
- 15:05Yeah, all right, man, this is Laurence Sawyer. Something you know
- 15:11him, something you don't, but I feel Larry, okay, Okay,
- 15:13So the right there. Ok. Okay, Larry, we have an outsideline.
- 15:20Yeah, George, this is Larry Larry saw Ye. I've been thinking
- 15:41about that. You know what we talked about last week. How about having

- 17:26Business offers on me about all the men I'm using one? I take it
- 17:30easy, Bill. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea, putting Sawyer in
- 17:32as a plant. He's talked with President three times now and he's set up
- 17:36nothing. Well, it takes time, brash and talb. But don't like
- 17:38Sawyer who's running that show the presnel, but he listens to them. Sawyer
- 17:44thinks he might get somewhere this week. When's he's seeing him again this morning?

- 18:59didn't push too hard because I didn't want him to get suspicious. Thankfully,
- 19:02you know something's wrong, said he. I have brought it up. I
- 19:04told him I had a client in town who takes some of the stuff.
- 19:07Yeah, well, you know we've been knogging about price all that stuff.
- 19:11He said he'd had. You know that he'd have to go eight thousand straight.
- 19:15I try to make it look good and I'll get for seventy five hundreds.
- 19:18He finally made a deal seventy eight folk killer. Yeah, he beefed
- 19:22me up about how high grated was, sixty five percent, said, I
- 19:26told my client would like that. Hey, look, I'm going to eat
- 19:30some cash. What's the deal you'll want you? I want to see seven
- 19:33eight hundred bucks before he shows me anything. I know that. I try
- 19:37to argue him down, but he wanted all in cash and I got to
- 19:40have it. You don't have it. When's your delivery? I'm supposed to
- 19:44meet him at the corner of Albion and sixth at nine o'clock to night.
- 19:47He said he'd have the stuff win him. No he didn't and I didn't
- 19:48ask, and he's pretty cagy it. Maybe you're running around testing me.
- 19:52I don't know. Oh, it should be Glad, but it's all over.
- 19:56Who was with him when you talked Talbot from Brashy? I was wrong
- 20:00thinking this was something George was England just for himself. They're right on it
- 20:03too. Are they going to be there? I don't know. Did you
- 20:06tell them who your client was? I did it just the way we talked
- 20:10about it. I just said it was a friend of Minchael California. He
- 20:12asked me for a name, and I told him I rather not say.
- 20:15We let it go with that. He was more int arrested. Are not
- 20:18going to about money than anything else? Nine o'clock I'll being in six then

- 20:56Then straight into section filling station on one corner of popping house across the street
- 21:00another on the opposite going Anna vacant lot. What about the apartment We checked
- 21:04around as much as we dared, so didn't find anything. Brash. He
- 21:07lives over in Pershing Heights. Heelbert's got a hotel room in the day and
- 21:10some of the others could be living around there. Yeah, but we don't
- 21:12know anything about them if they do. How about the filling station. It's
- 21:15independent guy who runs It's been in business seventeen years. I checked his help.
- 21:18All clean. Okay, I want one car parked on the street in
- 21:22front of the vacant lot, another one in the filling station. You can
- 21:26set Crockett and Murph up inside one of the apartment buildings and Ollnger and Costello
- 21:30on the other. Okay, now this may be just the starting point.
- 21:33I'll have a radio control set up right in the area. So I asked
- 21:37to get in the car with Presno, we'll follow. Who's going to handle
- 21:38that part, Oh, Pete Naby in the command carm. If he moves
- 21:41out, we'll move after him. But we don't want somebody ahead to pick
- 21:45him up. I can't risk telling him very long. Yeah, we can
- 21:48all start at six, and I'll let you give us plenty of time.

- 23:55me next to some sixty five percent stuff. I like the idea. I
- 23:57can use it. I wanting to pay the dell and not this kind of

- 28:07care of him too. Don't hand me over. Please me about her?
- 28:10Yeah, okay, okay, okay, it was all a setup, wasn't
- 28:21it. Come on, George, missus, sergeant CagA Branhy in town,
- 28:23but followed off from the other place. Ben. We picked him up two
- 28:26blocks back. Didn't tell what was up from there here, seventy eight hundred
- 28:30dollars away. What good does it do to get me. I'm an old
- 28:34man, I'm washed up. Anyhow, it'll stop this. I'll die there,
- 28:40Yeah, we probably will, Joine. Let's go the lineup where before
- 29:07you passed the innocent, the figurant, the thief, the murderer. Listen
- 29:12again next week when we again bring you the lineup. Hey, I have
- 29:18your retention. Please You people out there on the other side of the wire
- 29:21in the audience room, may I have your attention? Please? Thank you.
- 29:25My name is Corger, Sergeant Pete Carger. I'll explain the lineup to
- 29:27you. Each other suspects you will see will be numbered. I'll call off
- 29:32the number. Their name is Jarn. Do you have any questions or identifications?
- 29:34Please remember the number of signs of the prisoners. I call these names
- 29:38the end of each line when I ask you question. The lineup starring Bill
- 29:53Johnstone as Lieutenant Ben Guthrie with Jack Moyle to Sergeant Pete Carter, Written by
- 29:59E Jack Nu with music by Eddie dunstudied Hatred, and tonight's cast were High
- 30:03Averback, Peter Leeds, Howard mcneer, Benny Robin, Joseph Kern, and
- 30:08Virginia Gray. The lineup was transcribed in Hollywood by I made do Vayer Sunday
- 30:27Nights. Here Lionel Barrymore post narrator and frequent star with distinguished dramatic series.
- 30:33You'll find the plays or of the same hip caliber as you've heard in years
- 30:36gone by on the program CBS Radio called Your Thursday Night Playhouse. This year
- 30:41with Lionel Barrymore's post narrator, it's your Sunday Night Lighthouse on most of these
- 30:47same CBS Radio stations every week. Dan cover of speaking, this is the
- 30:55CBS Radio Network welcome back. Sometimes I don't think I'm quite fair to the
- 31:17lineup because I'm so often tempted to compare it to Dragnet. On the other
- 31:22hand, the lineup was really written in response to Dragnet, so I think
- 31:27it's a fair comparison. We're less than a year away from getting Dragnet here
- 31:33on the Great Detectors of Old Time Radio, and there is a difference,
- 31:37And I think this case really does illustrate it. We've got a good story
- 31:41and some solid twist. But Dragonet has done basically the similar, similar story
- 31:48multiple times. Usually it ended up doing it better. And I think the
- 31:52big difference here was the lineup told realistic stories while Dragnet told more or less
- 32:01real stories. The difference is the story that we heard on the lineup was
- 32:07completely plausible. It was down to earth. It was it wasn't anyone playing
- 32:14Super Cobb or anything that wasn't all far fetched. However, dragging That used
- 32:20true stories as the basis from which they adapted their cases, so you got
- 32:24all of the things that can happen in real life that are often more fantastic
- 32:30than fiction. So you had one episode with a drug buy where because of
- 32:36the short notice, Fida had to go into the drug buy I believe,
- 32:39unarmed, and instead of the full amount that he was paying, he had
- 32:45to have several have a hundred dollars bill on top ones beneath that, I
- 32:52think, even some newspaper in the middle. And by the way, he
- 32:55didn't have a gun. Here. Everything seemed to go a little bit too
- 33:00smooth, which doesn't allow the tension to build properly. I also have to
- 33:04say, I'm wondering where the Lineup is set. A Lineup TV show was
- 33:10actually syndicated as San Francisco Beat and was set in San Francisco. Radio show
- 33:15has always said it was in some great American city, but never quite said
- 33:21where, but they referenced basically a friend from California, suggesting California is out
- 33:27of state. And with all the clues that the Lineup was set somewhere on
- 33:32the in the West, you wonder where exactly that's supposed to be set At
- 33:37this point. That's all for this week. We will see you back here
- 33:40on Monday, Yours truly Johnny Dollar begins and Saturday we'll be back with another
- 33:45episode of the Lineup. In the meantime, sendra commons to Box thirteen at
