- 0:54Speaker 2: I think we're in a Monday, the twenty third we
- 1:00Speaker 2: and then we're off Christmas, even Christmas Day. I think
- 1:02Speaker 2: we're I think we're in, well, define off, Craig, because
- 1:06Speaker 2: I mean, well, New Year's Day in New York, right,
- 1:10Speaker 2: because those I.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Mean, you may be in Atlanta.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Let's hope I might be in Atlanta.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Let's hope.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Yeah, let's hope. Yeah, I think so. I think next
- 1:18Speaker 2: week we are off Tuesday, Wednesday. Yeah, yeah, so uh yeah,
- 1:22Speaker 2: well we'll be in on Monday. And when we're in
- 1:26Speaker 2: on Monday, I'm just telling me right now, Kim, We're
- 1:31Speaker 2: going to roll back with some of my favorite Christmas music. Okay,
- 1:34Speaker 2: I think I had the list still from last year.
- 1:36Speaker 2: You probably do, So we're gonna we're gonna do that.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Uh and that would be that would be on the
- 1:42Speaker 2: twenty third. We're still twelve days or eleven days away
- 1:45Speaker 2: from that. But anyway, that's on down the road.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Let's hear some more from Longhorne hit Football Rich Steve
- 1:51Speaker 3: Sarcasian Sark was on The Rich Eisen Show and we
- 1:56Speaker 3: heard him last hour talking about his team, and let's
- 2:01Speaker 3: let's hear some more from riche Eason and Sark.
- 2:04Speaker 4: You just describe the crazy world in which you live in,
- 2:07Speaker 4: but you and Texas are thriving in with nil and
- 2:10Speaker 4: portal and signing Day and conference championship and getting ready
- 2:13Speaker 4: for the college football playoffs, which is a reason why
- 2:15Speaker 4: a lot of people think only a certain type of
- 2:19Speaker 4: coach can be cut out for college football. What is
- 2:22Speaker 4: your thoughts, your two cents on Bill Belichick joining the
- 2:27Speaker 4: world of college football. He's now a college football coaching
- 2:30Speaker 4: colleague of youers Steve Sarkisian and North Carolina You what
- 2:33Speaker 4: are your thoughts on this?
- 2:35Speaker 5: Fascinated. I'm fascinated by it. You know, obviously a ton
- 2:38Speaker 5: of respect for coach Belichick and the job he's done
- 2:42Speaker 5: his entire career. I think we've all we're all better
- 2:46Speaker 5: coaches quite frankly because of what he's been able to
- 2:49Speaker 5: do and studying him and whether it's offense, defense, you know,
- 2:53Speaker 5: management of rosters, all all the stuff, you know, and
- 2:56Speaker 5: obviously my time with coach Saban and the connection with
- 2:59Speaker 5: those two. But fascinating that that he's back now and
- 3:04Speaker 5: coming to college football and trying to implement some of
- 3:07Speaker 5: those things.
- 3:07Speaker 1: There.
- 3:07Speaker 5: So a ton of respect for the job he's done.
- 3:10Speaker 5: I'm sure he'll do a great job there. But but
- 3:13Speaker 5: I think from from most perspectives, and you know, I
- 3:15Speaker 5: don't I don't know everybody but ours in our building
- 3:17Speaker 5: for sure. It's fascinating to see and to watch and
- 3:20Speaker 5: and you know, how how is this how's this project
- 3:23Speaker 5: gonna go?
- 3:24Speaker 1: Yeah? I know, right?
- 3:25Speaker 4: Was he around when you were in Alabama? Did did
- 3:28Speaker 4: he show up on campus practices?
- 3:32Speaker 1: Zooms? Or whatever with coach Saban.
- 3:34Speaker 5: You know Pro days for sure, you know, he in
- 3:36Speaker 5: and out of the Pro Days. And and I actually had
- 3:38Speaker 5: a couple of conversations with him this offseason about our
- 3:42Speaker 5: schedule now, because I think our calendar and our schedule
- 3:45Speaker 5: is more you know, from a from a team perspective,
- 3:48Speaker 5: and a college football playoff perspective is a little more
- 3:50Speaker 5: NFL driven. And so I was trying to pick his
- 3:53Speaker 5: brain on that. I had no idea that he'd be
- 3:55Speaker 5: coming our way and getting into the college game.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Isn't that nuts?
- 4:00Speaker 4: I mean, that is amazing how how life works sometimes.
- 4:03Speaker 4: Would you mind? What did he tell you? What insight
- 4:05Speaker 4: did you gain from him?
- 4:06Speaker 5: Well, it was just more about here's a guy that's
- 4:09Speaker 5: you know what, year after year after year and had
- 4:11Speaker 5: these long stretches of a season right the preseason, the
- 4:15Speaker 5: regular season and year in and year out there and they're
- 4:18Speaker 5: in the super Bowl, the championship game, and how he
- 4:20Speaker 5: managed his team. And I think, you know, you talked
- 4:23Speaker 5: to a Bill Belichick and Andy Reid, you know, Sean McVay,
- 4:27Speaker 5: Kyle Shanahan, guys now that have you know, year in
- 4:29Speaker 5: and year out, been in those positions of just how
- 4:31Speaker 5: they manage the workloads of their roster and their team
- 4:35Speaker 5: and how they practiced and.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Got them ready to play.
- 4:39Speaker 5: And so that was stuff I was trying to dig
- 4:41Speaker 5: into to make sure that we were in a really
- 4:43Speaker 5: good frame of mind and physically, mentally, emotionally come December,
- 4:47Speaker 5: and I think it's paid off for us.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Okay, And so do you listen.
- 4:51Speaker 4: I know he's got a gajillion rings and things of
- 4:54Speaker 4: that nature, and he's been at it since nineteen seventy
- 4:56Speaker 4: five in the NFL. But this is you know, you're
- 4:59Speaker 4: you're the you're the college coach here with with experience
- 5:02Speaker 4: and success.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Do you have any advice for him? Now? If you
- 5:06Speaker 1: picked your brain, what would that be, Steve Hire? Good recruiters.
- 5:15Speaker 1: You know, it's not a laugh, that's for sure. It's
- 5:17Speaker 1: not a draft. It's not a draft.
- 5:20Speaker 4: Ty you don't just get to you know, just it's
- 5:22Speaker 4: my pick and I got to get you. And now
- 5:24Speaker 4: you're under contract for four years with one plus right.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Doesn't work like that for us, that's for sure, okay.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Coach, Yeah, great advice there. I thought sark at first
- 5:34Speaker 3: was going to say something like, I'm not going to
- 5:36Speaker 3: give advice to Bill Belichick gives it. But that makes
- 5:40Speaker 3: sense though, hire good recruiters, which, by the way, brings
- 5:45Speaker 3: to mind does he bring in his son Steven? That
- 5:50Speaker 3: seems to be the popular speculation. Stephen Belichick the defensive
- 5:53Speaker 3: coordinator at the University of Washington and obviously used to
- 5:58Speaker 3: the recruiting game. I mean, I could see Belichick being
- 6:02Speaker 3: a closer, so to speak. You know, Mack Brown was
- 6:06Speaker 3: a really good closer after you had the other guys
- 6:09Speaker 3: get it to it. I think Sark is a closer.
- 6:12Speaker 3: But Sark is more active than that. He's out and
- 6:15Speaker 3: about and he's at games. He likes going to games
- 6:19Speaker 3: and watching games the ones that they're limited to to
- 6:22Speaker 3: go to because there is a limit that the NCAA
- 6:25Speaker 3: places on the total member of visits by a coaching staff.
- 6:31Speaker 3: So they have to and Sark has said this many times,
- 6:33Speaker 3: they have to be judicious about what games they're going
- 6:37Speaker 3: to see. They're in a non contact period right now
- 6:38Speaker 3: anyway with regard to that.
- 6:40Speaker 1: So.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Getting beyond signing day, and he's trying to get a
- 6:44Speaker 3: football team ready to play in the college football Playoff,
- 6:46Speaker 3: which you know, this is that vicious cycle where you
- 6:50Speaker 3: need players to have a chance to play in the playoff.
- 6:55Speaker 3: But you've got to prepare a team to play in
- 6:57Speaker 3: the playoff. But you got to keep but eye on
- 7:00Speaker 3: the portal because that's going only are you going to
- 7:04Speaker 3: be They're down the just six active defensive linemen for
- 7:07Speaker 3: this game against Glenson with the portal opening up and
- 7:10Speaker 3: losing some some pieces to the defensive line. And let
- 7:13Speaker 3: me say this, they're also hosting.
- 7:15Speaker 2: You know, they've had I think they have two recruits
- 7:16Speaker 2: on campus right now, yep, right or I don't know,
- 7:19Speaker 2: recruit what do you call it, uh transfer, portal recruit portal, yeah, portals, yeah, portalers, portals,
- 7:28Speaker 2: portal recruits maybe, I don't know. Uh so those tragents, Yeah,
- 7:34Speaker 2: those guys can come in. Obviously, that would be for
- 7:39Speaker 2: the program going forward in the future, would not be
- 7:41Speaker 2: for the remainder of this season. I think they'll be okay,
- 7:44Speaker 2: Like you said, six active defensive linemen for this And
- 7:49Speaker 2: let me say this, I understand why the guys have
- 7:52Speaker 2: to make the call that they do right now.
- 7:55Speaker 3: There may be some long horn fans, but why couldn't
- 7:57Speaker 3: they wait till the end of the season, because cause
- 8:02Speaker 3: the door may and window may be closed for them
- 8:04Speaker 3: they might have a not have an opportunity to catch
- 8:06Speaker 3: on with another program. And Sarka has been really upfront
- 8:08Speaker 3: about this that if you are a player on his
- 8:13Speaker 3: roster and you've got and you're having thoughts about leaving,
- 8:18Speaker 3: you need to have that conversation with them. And they're
- 8:21Speaker 3: going to have all those conversations with these guys you
- 8:24Speaker 3: know who are thinking about leaving, and then once you
- 8:29Speaker 3: enter the portal, start essentially is done with you. Because
- 8:36Speaker 3: I know there are some things where some guys pull
- 8:38Speaker 3: their name back out of the portal, but they have
- 8:40Speaker 3: to kind of move on with that because once you
- 8:44Speaker 3: establish that you are in the portal, they have to
- 8:46Speaker 3: actively divert resources and energy to finding someone to take
- 8:50Speaker 3: your place. So that's why I understand it from the
- 8:54Speaker 3: player perspective on why if they're going to enter the
- 8:58Speaker 3: portal they need to do it earlier rather than later
- 9:02Speaker 3: so that they have a better chance of catching on
- 9:04Speaker 3: in a situation that they like. But from sark side
- 9:09Speaker 3: and the coaching and the programs side of it, if
- 9:11Speaker 3: that's the case and you're really seriously considering, you probably
- 9:15Speaker 3: ought to go ahead and go.
- 9:16Speaker 2: And then you're out that kind of things.
- 9:19Speaker 3: That's just kind of the way it works in college football,
- 9:22Speaker 3: especially for these successful programs.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm sure the coaches and the staff members met
- 9:27Speaker 2: with some of these players after the end of the season,
- 9:28Speaker 2: and you know, some of it could be, hey, I
- 9:30Speaker 2: want to go somewhere else, and some of its saying
- 9:32Speaker 2: it could be, hey, you know it might be more
- 9:34Speaker 2: beneficial to your career if you go somewhere else.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Yep, yep, it's a two way conversation. We'll be back
- 9:40Speaker 3: to wrap up our number two on sports Radio AM
- 9:41Speaker 3: thirteen under the Zone.
