- 3:01Speaker 7: My French isn't very good, but it's a lot better
- 3:03Speaker 7: than her English. Cecil has only been over here a
- 3:06Speaker 7: couple of weeks that matter, when I was on occupation
- 3:08Speaker 7: duty over there.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Army you know, yeah, I see. Well, we'll try not
- 3:10Speaker 4: to keep you along, sir. We got a few questions
- 3:12Speaker 4: about the robbery. We think your wife might be able
- 3:14Speaker 4: to help us.
- 3:14Speaker 7: We'll sure try so. I didn't like to help you
- 3:16Speaker 7: any way we can.
- 3:17Speaker 5: Your wife was the only one in the story besides
- 3:19Speaker 5: the clerk at the time to hold up. Like to
- 3:20Speaker 5: have her tell us everything that happened if she would.
- 3:22Speaker 7: Play okay, She says, she saw everything that happened, Sergeant,
- 3:31Speaker 7: what would you like to know?
- 3:32Speaker 4: First?
- 3:33Speaker 6: Well, how about the hold up man?
- 3:34Speaker 4: Mister Gordon's your wife get a good look at him?
- 3:36Speaker 4: Can she describe him for us?
- 3:37Speaker 8: Says here?
- 3:38Speaker 4: Good?
- 3:45Speaker 7: She says, the fellow was wearing a blue coat, and
- 3:47Speaker 7: you had dark hair. Wasn't a very big man?
- 3:49Speaker 4: M Does she have any idea about how total he was?
- 3:52Speaker 8: Cecil Tai said that deal Christo.
- 4:00Speaker 7: She can't say exactly how to hold sergeant said he'd
- 4:03Speaker 7: come up to about here on my shoulder, about five
- 4:05Speaker 7: or eight. I guess she thinks maybe weighed about one
- 4:07Speaker 7: hundred and seventy pounds.
- 4:08Speaker 4: She's not sure he would you ask her exactly what
- 4:11Speaker 4: happened at the store. That is as much as she
- 4:13Speaker 4: can remember.
- 4:13Speaker 8: Here ccil de la exact mon Sukie.
- 4:19Speaker 9: Yeah literary director Monvan l.
- 4:26Speaker 10: Well.
- 4:26Speaker 7: She says she was standing by the counter sergeant when
- 4:28Speaker 7: the hold up man came in, says, the fellow went
- 4:31Speaker 7: over to the clerk. The man who was waiting on
- 4:33Speaker 7: her says, the fellow had a gun in his hand.
- 4:35Speaker 6: Would you ask her to go on?
- 4:38Speaker 4: Hey, a prey.
- 4:42Speaker 9: Doesn't sack the pai, she says.
- 4:44Speaker 7: The hold up man made the clerk get up the jewelry.
- 4:46Speaker 7: The guy took it and dumped it in a paper
- 4:47Speaker 7: bag cecil.
- 4:50Speaker 9: She saw his own preserve. Opting to lebem.
- 4:55Speaker 7: Terrible, she co, well, after he got all this jeweler
- 5:02Speaker 7: in the paper bag, the feet began beating up on
- 5:04Speaker 7: the clerk, she says, for no reason at all. He
- 5:06Speaker 7: began slugging the clerk with a gun. He was scaring,
- 5:09Speaker 7: really got nasty with him. Naturally, it scared the wife
- 5:12Speaker 7: and she let out a scream. He turned around and
- 5:14Speaker 7: hit her, she says, that's all. She remembers. She would
- 5:17Speaker 7: like to get my hands on the lousy.
- 5:19Speaker 5: You understand how you feel, mister Gordon, Could you ask
- 5:21Speaker 5: your wife? There's anything else about to hold up man?
- 5:23Speaker 4: You remember, says to RAPELTI shows propos de setan abbe
- 5:30Speaker 4: til Calcucho's deck throat in there.
- 5:33Speaker 10: No, that's about it.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Sorry, well, how about the man's clothes? Does she remember
- 5:38Speaker 4: anything else he was wearing besides that blue jacket?
- 5:40Speaker 6: Hello?
- 5:41Speaker 7: Res do sevetmo e paus don't bleet. She thinks maybe
- 5:51Speaker 7: he had on dark trousers. She's not sure, though, says
- 5:54Speaker 7: she was too scared to notice, says Porte Chapeau. I
- 6:00Speaker 7: asked her if he was wearing a hat. She says no,
- 6:02Speaker 7: she's sure of that, And I.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Say, well, is there anything else that she can remember
- 6:04Speaker 4: about him? Anything at all?
- 6:06Speaker 8: He at Tilo school, at police.
- 6:13Speaker 5: You got it all?
- 6:14Speaker 4: Well, thank you very much, mister Gordon, missus Gordon sco.
- 6:20Speaker 8: How's that now?
- 6:21Speaker 4: Sis you scopa?
- 6:23Speaker 9: Quiet on French?
- 6:25Speaker 7: She says she can't understand how a man to do
- 6:27Speaker 7: such a thing. She means, how he cut up the
- 6:29Speaker 7: clerk that way?
- 6:30Speaker 4: Yes, so hard for her. She just can't understand. Tell
- 6:34Speaker 4: her we can't either. Two weeks before, on the twenty
- 6:40Speaker 4: seventh of April, at two thirty in the afternoon, the
- 6:43Speaker 4: robbery suspect had begun his campaign of downtown jewelry store
- 6:46Speaker 4: hold ups. Since that time in the same general area,
- 6:49Speaker 4: he'd succeeded in committing three more jewel robberies and making
- 6:52Speaker 4: good his escape.
- 6:53Speaker 6: Each of the hold ups netted.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Him more than three thousand dollars in rings, diamonds, and
- 6:57Speaker 4: other precious stones from his amo Oh.
- 7:00Speaker 6: It was obvious that he was experienced.
- 7:02Speaker 4: All of the robberies were committed in broad daylight, all
- 7:05Speaker 4: of them were apparently well planned. After obtaining the loot,
- 7:08Speaker 4: which he dumped into an ordinary paper bag, he turned
- 7:11Speaker 4: on his victims and with no provocation, beat them viciously.
- 7:16Speaker 4: After two weeks of investigation, we had yet to come
- 7:19Speaker 4: up with a solid lead on either the identity of
- 7:21Speaker 4: the suspect or his whereabouts. We had a fair description
- 7:24Speaker 4: of the hold up man, we had a good rundown
- 7:27Speaker 4: on his method of operation, but repeated checks on possible
- 7:30Speaker 4: suspects through the Record bureau Cii and Sacramento and through
- 7:34Speaker 4: our statistician's office failed to get us anything. There were
- 7:36Speaker 4: no kickbacks on our all points bulletin. After we interviewed
- 7:40Speaker 4: Missus Gordon, the witness to the latest jewel robbery, we
- 7:42Speaker 4: were no further along than we were two weeks before,
- 7:45Speaker 4: and am all in a description. Neither one of them
- 7:47Speaker 4: were giving us much help. Four h five pm we
- 7:50Speaker 4: met with Captain Didion, how about the mug books any
- 7:52Speaker 4: like there? Miss Gordon's in there, noscarper with her husband
- 7:55Speaker 4: and checking through them. Nothing yet? What else you got? Working?
- 7:58Speaker 8: New run?
- 7:58Speaker 5: Going through the stats office third one this week might
- 8:00Speaker 5: get us something. The store manager on that job this afternoon.
- 8:03Speaker 5: Did you talk to him yet?
- 8:04Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 8:04Speaker 5: We did.
- 8:05Speaker 6: He gave us the best lead we've had so far
- 8:06Speaker 6: in the thing looks pretty good.
- 8:07Speaker 10: Now, what's that well?
- 8:08Speaker 4: We had him checking the rug books and he came
- 8:10Speaker 4: up with a partial identification from one of them. Sam
- 8:13Speaker 4: Quentin released now Jack Maynard. He's only been arrested once
- 8:16Speaker 4: here a drunk charge. He's done time up at queue
- 8:19Speaker 4: for robbery before Ben and I pulled the package on him.
- 8:22Speaker 4: We figure we ought to still be serving time at Quinton.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Couldn't tell from his record though, how's that West? Possibly
- 8:27Speaker 4: he might have been parole the last month or so
- 8:29Speaker 4: that had put him on line for these hold ups.
- 8:31Speaker 2: And you check Quinton.
- 8:32Speaker 5: We got out a teletype to the wards office late
- 8:34Speaker 5: this morning, Skipper. We have answered pretty soon, the best
- 8:37Speaker 5: lead we've had so far. I hope it stands up.
- 8:40Speaker 5: Excusing robbery didion? Yeah, oh yeah, I'm not here. Uh huh, No,
- 8:47Speaker 5: you and to CADEB stay on it. Yeh, that's right
- 8:50Speaker 5: over the weekend anyway.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Yeah, right, But.
- 8:54Speaker 4: Well, what's the answer.
- 8:55Speaker 5: He's had three weeks, he's cleared four jobs, every one
- 8:58Speaker 5: of them in broad daylight, more than one thousand dollars
- 9:00Speaker 5: worth of stuff.
- 9:01Speaker 4: Now, how do we reach him? How about some extra men,
- 9:03Speaker 4: par skipper, Kim and managing?
- 9:05Speaker 5: What do you got in mind? Steak up seems to
- 9:06Speaker 5: be the best angle for us with this kind of
- 9:08Speaker 5: a said that, how many teams you figure it'll take
- 9:10Speaker 5: oh a dozen? Anyhow you figure that? Joe?
- 9:12Speaker 4: Yeah, just about a thief seems to be concentrating on
- 9:15Speaker 4: the downtown area. All four hold ups were in the
- 9:17Speaker 4: same general neighborhood within a twenty block radio. We can't
- 9:21Speaker 4: cover all the jewelry stores with a dozen teams. It
- 9:24Speaker 4: will give us pretty good coverage, though, sure help our chances.
- 9:27Speaker 4: You checked out all the other angles.
- 9:29Speaker 6: Huh, everything not doing us much good?
- 9:33Speaker 4: Rob Rid didon Yeah, I just minute through Friday. Oh thanks, yeah,
- 9:39Speaker 4: Friday talking. Yeah, that's right, that's all. No, we'll pick
- 9:46Speaker 4: it up, thank you. Those communications just got an answer
- 9:49Speaker 4: in the teletype of Quentin on Jack mannon no lead,
- 9:52Speaker 4: He's still in prison. We went back and started again
- 9:57Speaker 4: from the beginning. With our best lead gone. There wasn't
- 10:00Speaker 4: any alternative. The following day, Thursday, March eleventh, the steakouts
- 10:05Speaker 4: went into effect.
- 10:06Speaker 6: A dozen jewelry stores.
- 10:07Speaker 4: In the immediate downtown area, all of them potential hold
- 10:10Speaker 4: up victims, were placed under constant surveillance. Three days passed,
- 10:14Speaker 4: nothing happened, no sign of the hold up man.
- 10:17Speaker 6: We stayed on it.
- 10:19Speaker 4: Tuesday, March sixteenth, eleven, a m had a small downtown
- 10:22Speaker 4: jewelry shop three blocks from the nearest steakout team. The
- 10:25Speaker 4: bandit committed his fifth successive robbery and made good his escape.
- 10:29Speaker 6: The m O and description matched in almost every respect.
- 10:32Speaker 6: Ben and I answered the call and drove.
- 10:34Speaker 4: To the scene of the hold up to interview the
- 10:36Speaker 4: victim of mister walder Myers.
- 10:38Speaker 11: He came straight back this way, just where I'm welcome.
- 10:42Speaker 11: I was at the end of the calendar there, just
- 10:44Speaker 11: where you are. He had a brown paper bag in
- 10:46Speaker 11: one hand, and it was just a couple of feet
- 10:48Speaker 11: from me. He put his other hand in his coat
- 10:50Speaker 11: pocket and he came up with a gun, pointed it
- 10:52Speaker 11: right at me.
- 10:53Speaker 4: The store was empty at the times or no customers around.
- 10:56Speaker 11: Yeah, that's right, just myself and my son in law,
- 10:58Speaker 11: Herb in the back room. I guess he heard this
- 11:01Speaker 11: thief talking to me and he came out to see
- 11:02Speaker 11: what it.
- 11:03Speaker 4: Was all about.
- 11:04Speaker 6: That's when the fireworks started.
- 11:05Speaker 11: And what happened, Well, he made Herb line up along
- 11:08Speaker 11: the counter, right next to me. By this time he
- 11:10Speaker 11: had all the loot he wanted in that paper bag
- 11:12Speaker 11: he was carrying. Just when I thought he was gonna leave,
- 11:15Speaker 11: he turned around. All of a sudden he said to Herb,
- 11:17Speaker 11: you think you're a smart guy, don't you. Then he
- 11:19Speaker 11: slugged her with the gun, brought it right down on
- 11:22Speaker 11: the side of his head all his might.
- 11:23Speaker 6: And that's when the fight started.
- 11:25Speaker 11: Just about Yeah, Herb fell down on one knee. There
- 11:28Speaker 11: was a great big gash on the side of his face.
- 11:31Speaker 11: Even when he was down, the thief kept slugging Herb
- 11:33Speaker 11: kept pounding him in the face with that gun. Herb
- 11:36Speaker 11: wasn't doing anything.
- 11:37Speaker 9: I got good and sore.
- 11:39Speaker 4: What happened then, Well, I didn't care what happened.
- 11:41Speaker 11: I just got sore at the lousy crook. I made
- 11:43Speaker 11: a dive for him, grabbed him around the chest, hit
- 11:46Speaker 11: something like this.
- 11:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:48Speaker 11: The two of us went down on the floor and
- 11:50Speaker 11: I wrestled him for the gun. That's when it went off.
- 11:53Speaker 11: A wild shot, plowed right into the wall over there.
- 11:57Speaker 11: Herb picked himself up and piled on the guy. I
- 12:00Speaker 11: guess the crook relief must have figured he was through.
- 12:02Speaker 11: Fought like a wild man. I had a good hold
- 12:05Speaker 11: of the top coat he had on, but he slipped
- 12:06Speaker 11: right out of it. He grabbed his gun in the
- 12:08Speaker 11: paper bag, ran out of the store, left me there
- 12:10Speaker 11: holding an empty coat.
- 12:12Speaker 4: And this is the coat he was wearing right here,
- 12:14Speaker 4: is that right?
- 12:15Speaker 11: Yeah, that's you can see one of the sleeves there.
- 12:18Speaker 11: He almost ripped it clean off trying to get away.
- 12:22Speaker 8: Yeah, I see.
- 12:23Speaker 9: I already looked through the pockets.
- 12:25Speaker 8: Nothing in him.
- 12:26Speaker 4: How about this description of the man, mister Myers. You're
- 12:28Speaker 4: pretty sure of that, are you? I'm positive, Sergeant Man.
- 12:32Speaker 6: You want to call the crime lab. And here's a
- 12:33Speaker 6: phone booth right over there, and you.
- 12:34Speaker 4: Might Oh yeah, I wonder if I could check that
- 12:41Speaker 4: spot with a bullet hit mister Myers. That wild shot
- 12:43Speaker 4: he fired, Oh yeah, right over here, back of the cash.
- 12:46Speaker 6: Right yeah, bedded in there, pretty solid.
- 12:51Speaker 4: Yeah, lucky it was the wall, not one of us.
- 12:54Speaker 11: Say, I got a pocket knife here if you want
- 12:56Speaker 11: to dig it out.
- 12:56Speaker 4: No, sir, we've got a crew on the way out
- 12:58Speaker 4: from our crime lab ballistics man, take care of it.
- 13:01Speaker 4: I would like to take another look at that top coat,
- 13:03Speaker 4: the one the thief was wearing.
- 13:04Speaker 11: Oh, yeah, sure, I already looked it over pretty good.
- 13:07Speaker 11: Nothing in the pockets. Couldn't find anything.
- 13:10Speaker 5: Hey here, just ordinary top coat and there's no label
- 13:14Speaker 5: on it. No, you're right, there's nothing in the pocket.
- 13:20Speaker 10: Oh what is to find something?
- 13:22Speaker 4: Oh? No shirt? It feels like a hole in the
- 13:24Speaker 4: pocket here, good size, many Yeah, prim labs on the way.
- 13:32Speaker 4: You should be here in a couple of minutes. Okay,
- 13:34Speaker 4: anything at all in the coat? I don't know. Here
- 13:38Speaker 4: seems to be a hole in this pocket here as possible,
- 13:40Speaker 4: something might have dropped down into the landing of the coat.
- 13:42Speaker 10: Man.
- 13:42Speaker 4: Yeah, let me hold out that in for you, all right,
- 13:44Speaker 4: thank you.
- 13:45Speaker 6: Let me hold it up a little.
- 13:46Speaker 4: That's fine, right like this, uh huh.
- 13:49Speaker 6: Yeah, And it feels like something down in here.
- 13:52Speaker 10: What is it?
- 13:53Speaker 4: Just a minute, I get my hand down in there,
- 13:55Speaker 4: see if I can get it. Yeah. Here we are
- 14:00Speaker 4: a scrap of paper writing what is it Jill telephone number?
- 14:08Speaker 4: The phone number printed neatly on the scrap of paper
- 14:11Speaker 4: was Crestview nine two oh eight five. There were no
- 14:13Speaker 4: other notations. We checked out the number and found that
- 14:16Speaker 4: the telephone was installed at sixty four fourteen Cordova Drive
- 14:20Speaker 4: in the Los Veelis district. After the crime lab crew
- 14:23Speaker 4: arrived at the store, Ben and I took the bandit's
- 14:25Speaker 4: top coat and drove to the address listed for the
- 14:28Speaker 4: phone number, a twelve unit apartment house on the corner
- 14:30Speaker 4: of Franklin Avenue in Fairfax. The number turned out to
- 14:33Speaker 4: be a public phone booth located in the lobby of
- 14:36Speaker 4: the apartment. The manager could tell us nothing. We began
- 14:39Speaker 4: checking with the tenants on the first floor of the building.
- 14:42Speaker 4: We gave them the description of the jewelry store abandoned.
- 14:45Speaker 4: We showed them the top coat. They failed to recognize
- 14:47Speaker 4: either one. We started on the second floor at the
- 14:50Speaker 4: end of the hall. The tenant was a Missus Iverson.
- 14:53Speaker 4: You recognize a description of Tomas Iverson? Anything to you?
- 14:57Speaker 10: Yes, I'd say it did, Sach. Have you tried the
- 15:01Speaker 10: apartment next door, Miss King's apartment?
- 15:04Speaker 4: Oh?
- 15:04Speaker 6: No, ma'am, why do he asked that.
- 15:06Speaker 10: Yes, I'm almost sure of it, ma'am. I've seen a
- 15:11Speaker 10: man who looks like this going there several times.
- 15:24Speaker 3: You are listening to dragnet authentic stories of your police
- 15:28Speaker 3: force in action.
- 15:35Speaker 4: March sixteenth, Tuesday, two forty eight pm, Ben and I
- 15:39Speaker 4: went next door to the apartment where a man answering
- 15:41Speaker 4: the description of the jewelry store Bandit reportedly had been
- 15:44Speaker 4: seen several times.
- 15:45Speaker 6: We rang, but there was no answer.
- 15:47Speaker 4: We went back and checked with the manager of the building,
- 15:49Speaker 4: who told us that the apartment was registered to a
- 15:52Speaker 4: miss Leonora King. He told us that as far as
- 15:54Speaker 4: he knew, Miss King worked during the day and that
- 15:56Speaker 4: she usually returned to her apartment between seven and eight
- 15:59Speaker 4: o'clock at night. The manager gave us the address of
- 16:02Speaker 4: the place she worked and we checked it out. It
- 16:04Speaker 4: was an exclusive gift shop on Locienaca Boulevard in West Hollywood.
- 16:08Speaker 4: We located Leonor King back at the main packing desk,
- 16:10Speaker 4: where she was employed as a gift wrapper. When we
- 16:13Speaker 4: put the question to her that a man answering the
- 16:15Speaker 4: description of the jewelry store of Bandit had been seen
- 16:17Speaker 4: visiting her, she readily admitted it.
- 16:21Speaker 9: Yes, that's right, I'd say it looks just like that.
- 16:23Speaker 12: He drops by my apartment four or five times a month.
- 16:25Speaker 12: His name's Marty.
- 16:26Speaker 4: What's his last name? Miss King? Where can you find him?
- 16:29Speaker 12: I'm sorry I never did know his last Name' afraid
- 16:31Speaker 12: I don't know where you can find him either.
- 16:32Speaker 4: Well, how's that, Miss King? He visit you quite a bit.
- 16:34Speaker 4: He's a friend of yours, isn't he Not exactly?
- 16:36Speaker 12: I know him, that's about all. He's a friend of
- 16:38Speaker 12: a friend.
- 16:38Speaker 10: It's more like that.
- 16:39Speaker 9: Uh huh, excuse me.
- 16:42Speaker 12: Okay, I'm sorry.
- 16:44Speaker 10: This package has a rush on it.
- 16:46Speaker 12: I'll have to wrap it now, do you mind?
- 16:47Speaker 6: No, ma'am, you go right ahead.
- 16:51Speaker 5: About this man Marty, Miss King, you might explaining a
- 16:54Speaker 5: little more if you don't know him, Well, why should
- 16:56Speaker 5: he visit you so often?
- 16:58Speaker 10: Well, to tell you the truth, it's more of a
- 16:59Speaker 10: favorite than anything.
- 17:00Speaker 12: It's through Virginia. She's my girlfriend, and I wish I
- 17:03Speaker 12: never got mixed up in.
- 17:04Speaker 9: It to begin with.
- 17:05Speaker 6: Why do you mean mixed up in what?
- 17:06Speaker 12: Well, it's confidential, Sergeant, I just as soon not mentioned,
- 17:09Speaker 12: if you don't mind, would.
- 17:10Speaker 6: Like to have you tell us everything you know about it.
- 17:12Speaker 6: It's a pretty important matter.
- 17:13Speaker 4: Man.
- 17:13Speaker 12: Well, I don't know really how it started.
- 17:15Speaker 10: I mean, how the two of them got together.
- 17:17Speaker 12: Marty and Virginia just met. I suppose Ginia fell in
- 17:20Speaker 12: love with him. She had to find some way out
- 17:22Speaker 12: how that Virginia she was crazy about Marty. I guess
- 17:25Speaker 12: she still is. They didn't want to get all involved, though,
- 17:28Speaker 12: neither one of them. It's romantic in a way.
- 17:31Speaker 9: Could I have the scissors there, sergeant?
- 17:33Speaker 6: Yes, there you go.
- 17:34Speaker 12: Well, the two of them want is to see each
- 17:36Speaker 12: other once a week. It's enough for Virginia, she says,
- 17:38Speaker 12: she loves him, that's all it counts. She doesn't want
- 17:40Speaker 12: to know where Marty lives, what he does, anything about him,
- 17:43Speaker 12: and I guess the same goes for Marty.
- 17:45Speaker 4: See, so the two haven't get in touch with each
- 17:47Speaker 4: other through you?
- 17:47Speaker 8: Is that it?
- 17:48Speaker 10: That's right?
- 17:48Speaker 12: Usually once a week, maybe once every two weeks. I
- 17:51Speaker 12: just as soon not talk about it if you don't mind, though,
- 17:53Speaker 12: I can give you Virginia's address. She can tell you
- 17:55Speaker 12: more about Marty.
- 17:56Speaker 10: Than I can.
- 17:56Speaker 6: You have no idea where we can locate the man.
- 17:58Speaker 12: I'm sorry, none at all. Only contact I have is
- 18:01Speaker 12: when Marty Flow's mirror when he comes around, leaves a
- 18:04Speaker 12: message for Virginia where to meet him and win, then leaves.
- 18:07Speaker 12: I really think you ought to talk to Virginia about it.
- 18:12Speaker 5: There we are one thing I don't quite understand, ma'am. Yes,
- 18:15Speaker 5: this girlfriend of yours, Virginia, you say she's in love
- 18:17Speaker 5: with this fellow Marty.
- 18:18Speaker 12: Oh yeah, crazy about him?
- 18:20Speaker 4: And why are they're.
- 18:20Speaker 5: Playing this hide and seek? If they're in love, why
- 18:22Speaker 5: don't they come out and get married. What's the problem Virginia?
- 18:25Speaker 12: What she's already married?
- 18:29Speaker 4: Before we left Leonora King, we advised her what the
- 18:32Speaker 4: situation was in the event the suspect Marty contacted her.
- 18:36Speaker 4: She was to get in touch with us immediately. She
- 18:38Speaker 4: gave us her promise that she wouldn't disclose our conversation
- 18:41Speaker 4: with her. We left her our card and she gave
- 18:43Speaker 4: us the address of her girlfriend, Virginia Brewer, who was
- 18:46Speaker 4: a South Argyle Street address.
- 18:48Speaker 6: But missus Brewer wasn't at home.
- 18:50Speaker 4: Eight fifteen pm, we drove to her place of employment,
- 18:53Speaker 4: a Valley nightclub out along Ventura Boulevard, where she was
- 18:55Speaker 4: appearing in the floor show.
- 18:57Speaker 6: She was a dancer. We located her backstage, waiting to
- 19:00Speaker 6: go on.
- 19:02Speaker 10: You must have some other girl in mind, actic, sir.
- 19:04Speaker 10: I don't know anyone by the name of Mary.
- 19:05Speaker 4: You sure about that, missus Brewer. We got it from
- 19:07Speaker 4: a pretty good sort.
- 19:08Speaker 10: Well, I'm sure I don't know where you got it,
- 19:10Speaker 10: but it's wrong. Ther name isn't familiar at all. Who
- 19:12Speaker 10: told you this? Anyway?
- 19:13Speaker 6: Close friend of yours, ma'am. She seemed to know what
- 19:15Speaker 6: she was talking about.
- 19:15Speaker 4: Who was it?
- 19:16Speaker 10: I got a right to know that?
- 19:17Speaker 4: Leonar King leonor Why should she tell you a story
- 19:20Speaker 4: like that? We wouldn't know, ma'am, unless it's the truth.
- 19:23Speaker 10: Of course, it's not the truth. I don't know anybody.
- 19:25Speaker 10: I don't even know what this is all about.
- 19:27Speaker 4: She says. You know the man, missus Brewer. She says
- 19:29Speaker 4: you're in love with him. She seemed to have all
- 19:31Speaker 4: the details. Now, is there any good reason why she
- 19:33Speaker 4: tell lies about you?
- 19:34Speaker 10: I don't know.
- 19:35Speaker 9: You believe what she told you?
- 19:37Speaker 6: Yes, ma'am, we do, unless you can prove it's a lie.
- 19:40Speaker 9: I'm sorry.
- 19:41Speaker 10: That's my introduction.
- 19:42Speaker 4: I have to go on, all right, ma'am. We way
- 20:00Speaker 4: h m h.
- 20:14Speaker 10: M m m.
- 20:18Speaker 1: Hm m m.
- 20:29Speaker 4: Goodes have been.
- 20:35Speaker 10: We'll be right back. Hot take another bout.
- 20:39Speaker 5: Hi.
- 20:47Speaker 10: You wanna come back here Rousters dressing room. You can
- 20:51Speaker 10: talk there.
- 20:56Speaker 4: In here, thank you.
- 20:59Speaker 10: Well, there's't any point trying to cover it over. Only
- 21:05Speaker 10: one thing I'd like to ask you. Yes, ma'am, her
- 21:08Speaker 10: husband doesn't have to know, does he? I mean, whatever
- 21:11Speaker 10: there is to this, you don't have to tell the papers.
- 21:14Speaker 10: Do you keep it quiet?
- 21:15Speaker 6: Whatever you tell us will be strictly confidential, ma'am.
- 21:17Speaker 10: All right. I know Marty. I've known him for six
- 21:21Speaker 10: months when I wasn't lying, I'm loving him.
- 21:24Speaker 4: Well, we're not prying into your personal life in his Brewer.
- 21:26Speaker 4: We just like to locate this man, Marty, that's all.
- 21:28Speaker 4: It's pretty important to us.
- 21:30Speaker 10: Why is it important? Why do you want him?
- 21:32Speaker 4: Robbery investigation man. We'd like to get hold of him
- 21:35Speaker 4: for an interview.
- 21:36Speaker 10: Robby Marty's done something that way you want him.
- 21:40Speaker 4: We're not sure. Do you have any idea where we
- 21:41Speaker 4: can find him?
- 21:42Speaker 10: No more than leonor yuess she told you about it.
- 21:46Speaker 10: I mean, Marty and I Hot Spin.
- 21:48Speaker 6: You have no idea where he stays, where he works?
- 21:50Speaker 10: No, I don't. It's been that way from the beginning. Well,
- 21:53Speaker 10: Noor knows as much about that as I do. Only
- 21:56Speaker 10: one way I can get in touch with him, and
- 21:57Speaker 10: that's when he leaves a message at the Nor's where
- 21:59Speaker 10: I leave a message. When you first met Marty and
- 22:01Speaker 10: I am that's the way we both wanted it. You
- 22:04Speaker 10: didn't want to get all involved because of my husband Hide.
- 22:08Speaker 4: And neither have you seen this mighty lately, miss Brewer, Yes,
- 22:11Speaker 4: about ten days ago.
- 22:12Speaker 6: You expect to see him again soon?
- 22:14Speaker 10: I don't know. I suppose, so you'll leave a message
- 22:16Speaker 10: with le Nor if he wants me so I can
- 22:17Speaker 10: go on.
- 22:18Speaker 4: Could you leave a message for him with Lenoor?
- 22:20Speaker 10: Yes, I suppose, so I have to wait. He calls, though,
- 22:24Speaker 10: can't you tell me more about it? Sergeant, Why do
- 22:27Speaker 10: you want him? What's it about?
- 22:28Speaker 4: We're going to have to ask your cooperation, ma'am. Your
- 22:31Speaker 4: friends are robbery suspect. I think he's a pretty good one.
- 22:34Speaker 4: Mighty yes, ma'am. And the next time he contacts you,
- 22:37Speaker 4: the next time he sets up a date with you,
- 22:38Speaker 4: we'd like to know where.
- 22:39Speaker 10: We'd like to know when you think he's guilty, really
- 22:42Speaker 10: think he's done something?
- 22:43Speaker 6: Well, he's a suspect, man, that's all we know.
- 22:45Speaker 10: I guess Leonora told you. I love him, love him
- 22:48Speaker 10: more than anyone. Won't make any difference, ma'am, won't make
- 22:51Speaker 10: any difference. I love him. Even if he is guilty.
- 22:54Speaker 10: It won't make any difference.
- 22:56Speaker 6: A will to him.
- 23:00Speaker 4: Twenty five PM, we continued questioning Virginia Brewer. Before we left,
- 23:04Speaker 4: we got her promise that in the event the man
- 23:06Speaker 4: known as Marty contacted her, she would notify us immediately.
- 23:10Speaker 6: Nine twenty PM.
- 23:11Speaker 4: We checked back in at the office and made arrangements
- 23:14Speaker 4: to keep the home of Virginia Brewer under constant surveillance,
- 23:17Speaker 4: as well as the apartment of her girlfriend, Leonora King.
- 23:20Speaker 4: The following morning, we checked with the ballistics men at
- 23:23Speaker 4: the crime lab, who examined the slug which had been
- 23:25Speaker 4: taken from the wall of Walter Meyer's jewelry store, the
- 23:28Speaker 4: latest of the hold up man's victims. It was identified
- 23:30Speaker 4: as having been fired from a thirty two caliber revolver.
- 23:33Speaker 4: The slug was marked and filed as evidence. Thorough examination
- 23:37Speaker 4: of the top coat which the suspect had left behind
- 23:39Speaker 4: at as last hold up.
- 23:41Speaker 6: Failed to yield any new leads.
- 23:43Speaker 4: The jewel trays at the store which had been held
- 23:45Speaker 4: up were also checked for fingerprints. A week passed, no
- 23:48Speaker 4: sign of the jewel thief. Wednesday, March twenty fourth, I'll
- 23:52Speaker 4: grab it all right, robbery or Merril huh oh yes, yes, ma'am.
- 23:58Speaker 4: Well when was that all right? Bye? Yes, ma'am, thank you,
- 24:03Speaker 4: bye you anything that friend Missus Brewers.
- 24:06Speaker 5: Lenora King says, this is for the marty called a
- 24:08Speaker 5: few minutes ago set up a date with Missus Brewer
- 24:11Speaker 5: was supposed to meet Leonoi's apartment when eight o'clock tonight,
- 24:17Speaker 5: four forty.
- 24:18Speaker 4: Five p m. We checked with Captain Dideon and set
- 24:21Speaker 4: up a plan to have the apartment building where Leonora
- 24:23Speaker 4: King lived thoroughly covered that night. Carr and Matthews were
- 24:27Speaker 4: assigned to cover outside the main entrance. Micaleb and Olsen
- 24:30Speaker 4: would cover the lobby. Ben and I would be in
- 24:32Speaker 4: the apartment proper, along with Missus Brewer and Leonora King.
- 24:36Speaker 4: By six o'clock that night, we were all in position.
- 24:39Speaker 6: We waited.
- 24:40Speaker 4: Six thirty seven o'clock, seven point thirty We waited. Missus
- 24:45Speaker 4: Brewer walked the floor with a drink in her hand.
- 24:48Speaker 4: Seven forty five, seven point fifty. Ben watched at the window.
- 24:52Speaker 4: Virginia Brewer got nervous.
- 24:54Speaker 10: You can't prove it. You don't know anything for sure.
- 24:57Speaker 10: How I know you're not trying for a frame, trying
- 24:59Speaker 10: to blame Marty something he didn't do.
- 25:00Speaker 5: We're not blaming him for anything. Mammy's a suspect. We
- 25:03Speaker 5: want to talk to him, that's all.
- 25:05Speaker 12: Why don't you sit down him, Virgin?
- 25:06Speaker 10: You know he was getting upset. It'll be all right.
- 25:08Speaker 10: Come on, honey, got him all over the place on
- 25:10Speaker 10: our cops waiting for Marty.
- 25:12Speaker 9: What am I supposed to think?
- 25:13Speaker 4: Why don't you relax, missus Brewer. If he's not the man,
- 25:15Speaker 4: you got nothing.
- 25:16Speaker 5: To worry about it.
- 25:16Speaker 10: He's right, honey, sit down.
- 25:18Speaker 4: Let me fresh up that jo. Yeah, car pulling up outside,
- 25:22Speaker 4: he said, Dan, Yeah, let's see right in front. Hey,
- 25:26Speaker 4: man getting out here. He's coming in here, alright.
- 25:30Speaker 8: You can't see him. He must be inside, Marty.
- 25:42Speaker 10: Marty, why didn't you tell me you want.
- 25:45Speaker 6: To hop downstairs?
- 25:46Speaker 5: Ben?
- 25:46Speaker 6: See what happened.
- 25:51Speaker 10: It'll be all right, honey, take it easy, he'll be
- 25:53Speaker 10: all right. I didn't know. I didn't know, Sorrget Why
- 25:59Speaker 10: did you do it? You what, ma'am Marty? I didn't
- 26:03Speaker 10: know about it. We didn't know anything about each other,
- 26:06Speaker 10: and this has to happen. Why didn't he tell me?
- 26:10Speaker 6: I wouldn't know.
- 26:11Speaker 10: I love him. The rest I don't know, but I
- 26:13Speaker 10: love him. He was in trouble. He could have told
- 26:16Speaker 10: me he loved me, would have told me, he would
- 26:18Speaker 10: have told me everything.
- 26:20Speaker 4: Well, I guess maybe you've got the answer. What he
- 26:23Speaker 4: didn't love you?
- 26:32Speaker 2: The story you have just heard was true. The names
- 26:35Speaker 2: were changed to protect the innocent.
- 26:37Speaker 3: On June twenty ninth, trial was held in Superior Court,
- 26:40Speaker 3: Department ninety one, City and County of Los Angeles, State
- 26:43Speaker 3: of California. In a moment the results of that trial,
- 26:55Speaker 3: the suspect, Martin Arthur Kessington, was wounded, but not fatally,
- 26:58Speaker 3: when he attempted to resis to rest. After interrogation, he
- 27:02Speaker 3: dictated a signed statement admitting guilt for all five of
- 27:05Speaker 3: the jewelry store hold ups. He was tried and convicted
- 27:08Speaker 3: on five counts of first degree robbery and received a
- 27:10Speaker 3: sentence as prescribed by law robbery in the first degree
- 27:14Speaker 3: as punishable by imprisonment in the state penitentiary for a
- 27:17Speaker 3: term of five years to life. Ah, you have just
- 27:29Speaker 3: heard Dragnet a series of authentic cases from official files.
- 27:33Speaker 3: Technical advice comes from the Office of Chief of Police W. H. Parker,
- 27:36Speaker 3: Los Angeles Police Department. Bartney Arborough is Sergeant Ben Romero.
- 27:40Speaker 3: Also heard were Big Perron and Virginia Gray. Script by
- 27:44Speaker 3: Jim Mosey, music by Walter Schumann. Hal Gidney speaking.
- 27:54Speaker 4: Next Counterspy Fights International Intrigue on in VC.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Welcome back. A solid episode and I think Joe Friday's
- 28:09Speaker 1: comment at the end was justified. If this robber had
- 28:14Speaker 1: actually loved her, I doubt that he could have been
- 28:19Speaker 1: content with a situation where they would just be together
- 28:26Speaker 1: for an hour, and truth be told, if she actually
- 28:31Speaker 1: cared as much for him as she said, she would
- 28:35Speaker 1: not have been content with it either. What you had
- 28:38Speaker 1: were two people who were using each other and at
- 28:43Speaker 1: least in her case, overly romanticizing the situation. Probably one
- 28:49Speaker 1: of the most common sound effects that you'll hear in
- 28:54Speaker 1: Dragon at the sort of dancing shoe routine. That's something
- 29:00Speaker 1: that's fairly easy for the sound effects of the era
- 29:05Speaker 1: to recreate, but it was used to really draws into
- 29:12Speaker 1: that scene and believe that we were watching a dancer
- 29:17Speaker 1: with our ears all right. Well, listener comments and feedback,
- 29:22Speaker 1: and we have a comment on the big bum Glow
- 29:27Speaker 1: over on Spotify, and doctor Who Done It wrote Adam,
- 29:31Speaker 1: I have to disagree with you. If I'm the suspect
- 29:33Speaker 1: and guilty, I will deny it until my prison sentence
- 29:37Speaker 1: is up. If I'm going to serve time either way,
- 29:40Speaker 1: I would rather have a shot. If I'm the suspect
- 29:43Speaker 1: in innocent, I will also be denying it until my
- 29:46Speaker 1: prison sentence is up. However, there's a lot and lighter
- 29:51Speaker 1: sentence and I can be released quicker than I will
- 29:55Speaker 1: admit it. There is something to that, and I could
- 30:00Speaker 1: totally go along with the idea of the burglar maintaining
- 30:05Speaker 1: his innocence all the way through trial and beyond as
- 30:10Speaker 1: a matter of trying to secure his release, And that
- 30:17Speaker 1: makes total sense. What I don't get, and maybe I
- 30:20Speaker 1: just don't understand the criminal mind is continuing to argue
- 30:24Speaker 1: this with the police because they're not buying your story
- 30:29Speaker 1: and for just wasting your energy. If you're denying a crime,
- 30:34Speaker 1: whether you're guilty or innocent, at some point you have
- 30:37Speaker 1: to reach the point where you say to the police, Okay,
- 30:41Speaker 1: well I've tried to tell you what actually happened. You're
- 30:46Speaker 1: not believing me, so I don't see the need to
- 30:49Speaker 1: continue this conversation, and continuing to engage them gives them
- 30:53Speaker 1: the chance to wear you down and then over on YouTube.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Regarding the episode the Big Hit and Run Killer, James
- 31:03Speaker 1: Riots definitely didn't see that twist coming. Great episode. Thanks
- 31:07Speaker 1: so much, James, And now it's time to thank our

- 31:56Speaker 2: at least did.
- 31:56Speaker 10: All right, That's not what I meant.
- 31:59Speaker 9: I thought I was the one who killed him.
- 32:02Speaker 10: I'm not sure I had.
- 32:06Speaker 4: Oh I don't know, doesn't seem to matter.
- 32:10Speaker 9: He's dead. I guess that's all.
- 32:14Speaker 1: Get hold of yourself, Carol.
- 32:19Speaker 10: All right, I guess I'm not making much depense. You'll

- 32:45Speaker 10: I had to come.
- 32:47Speaker 6: Why I'm telling me why.
- 32:51Speaker 10: He insisted that I have a drink with him. Then
