Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett.
- 0:04Speaker 2: All right, well, I've got in the studio with me
- 0:06Speaker 2: here at One Link Up Alex Media a few very
- 0:08Speaker 2: special guests. Firstly, Joan Pelzer, the executive producer for the
- 0:11Speaker 2: Arthur Adela Power.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Joanie, I don't know, we haven't had you on.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Much on this show, but tell us what... I know,
- 0:16Speaker 3: you never invite me anymore. I don't know. Tell us
- 0:18Speaker 3: what you've set up for us on Friday on the
- 0:21Speaker 3: Arthur Adela Power.
- 0:21Speaker 4: Okay, so we decided to call it Fastball Friday because
- 0:25Speaker 4: we threw Arthur out of town for a little while
- 0:28Speaker 4: and we wanted to have our dear friend Dom Scala.
- 0:30Speaker 4: And I know you like baseball.
- 0:31Speaker 3: I love baseball a little bit, yeah. Just a little bit.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Are you a Yankee fan? I think so, yeah.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Just a little bit. Do you ever wear a Yankee hat?
- 0:37Speaker 1: All the time.
- 0:37Speaker 3: What am I wearing today? A nice maroon Yankee hat, actually.
- 0:40Speaker 4: Yeah, a very nice one.
- 0:41Speaker 3: It's from the... It's 47. What does that mean, actually?
- 0:43Speaker 1: That's the company 47, actually.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Okay, so that's... They're trying to get them as.
- 0:46Speaker 2: A sponsor, so you never know.
- 0:47Speaker 1: There you go.
- 0:47Speaker 3: There you go. You never know. Sponsor, Alex's show.
- 0:50Speaker 4: He's amazing.
- 0:51Speaker 3: And Dom Scala, 78, Yankees, World Series.
- 0:54Speaker 4: He has a ring. You've all been trying it on
- 0:56Speaker 4: all day. It's pretty darn heavy, let me tell you.
- 0:58Speaker 4: I think I'm the only one that didn't try it on.
- 1:00Speaker 4: But I said, let's put together Fastball Friday.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Dom... Who you got for us. And can I just say,
- 1:07Speaker 1: oh my God, who didn't he get?
- 1:10Speaker 4: He got two of the greatest two hits in baseball
- 1:14Speaker 4: history that we listened and watched them and played them
- 1:18Speaker 4: live on the show.
- 1:19Speaker 3: And when you hear Friday, you'll go back to that
- 1:21Speaker 3: moment instantly.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
- 1:23Speaker 3: So Dom is with us here in studio.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Who do we have?
- 1:25Speaker 3: And thank you for joining us downtown here.
- 1:27Speaker 1: What's up, Alex? How are you? It's great to be here.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Yeah, no, it's always great to have you. So who
- 1:32Speaker 3: do we got lined up for Friday for our fastball?
- 1:34Speaker 5: Well, we have Jim Liritz first, who hit two very
- 1:38Speaker 5: dramatic home runs, as we know. One in 95 in
- 1:41Speaker 5: the playoffs and a home run in 96 in the
- 1:46Speaker 5: World Series in Atlanta, in which I was actually present
- 1:51Speaker 5: at that game. And then we have my good friend
- 1:54Speaker 5: and teammate Chris Shambless. With a 1976 game-changing, Yankee-changing, history-changing
- 2:04Speaker 5: home run.
- 2:05Speaker 3: He's back a little bit.
- 2:06Speaker 1: From what, 1964?
- 2:08Speaker 3: 1964, exactly.
- 2:10Speaker 5: And this is the 50th anniversary, by the way, so
- 2:12Speaker 5: that's another great thing of that home run.
- 2:15Speaker 1: So that's who we have.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Well, let's talk a little baseball for today because the
- 2:18Speaker 2: Yanks had a rough loss last night. Yeah.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Ryan here too.
- 2:23Speaker 2: We could all sit here and say, oh my God,
- 2:25Speaker 2: the Yanks are two and a half out of the
- 2:26Speaker 2: AL East with almost, I don't want to say nothing,
- 2:29Speaker 2: but like a skeleton of a team it feels like.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Isn't this impressive the way they've handled it without Judge
- 2:34Speaker 2: and Bellinger and Stanton who's out for.
- 2:36Speaker 1: The year now? Yeah, I mean, you know, it is impressive.
- 2:39Speaker 5: It seems like we talk about the same thing a
- 2:41Speaker 5: lot about, you know, how they're not quite on top
- 2:46Speaker 5: but close.
- 2:47Speaker 1: And yeah, it's a factor. that they are in striking distance.
- 2:52Speaker 5: They are a winning streak away from going ahead and
- 2:57Speaker 5: maybe going forward.
- 3:00Speaker 1: But they've got to get Judge back. Listen, there's no
- 3:05Speaker 1: accounting for him. I think that.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Would improve Rice because it feels like when judges are
- 3:10Speaker 2: in the lineup, Rice sees better baseball.
- 3:12Speaker 5: Yeah, you know what? That's a good point. It's a
- 3:14Speaker 5: valid point. You know, they're not going to get Stanton back.
- 3:18Speaker 5: We know that. But they do have those other two
- 3:20Speaker 5: hitters that Harris, they're doing great. You know, the guys
- 3:23Speaker 5: that we just got.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Garcia keeps hitting the ball.
- 3:26Speaker 5: Garcia.
- 3:26Speaker 3: He's great.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Garcia, yeah, exactly. And Ramos, right?
- 3:30Speaker 2: Now, one guy that both of you know I've been
- 3:32Speaker 2: chiming in for is Paul Goldschmidt.
- 3:35Speaker 3: I feel like he's not going to see a bat
- 3:36Speaker 3: in a while.
- 3:37Speaker 1: I don't know when he's going to bat next. You know,
- 3:38Speaker 1: that's a good point also. You're right.
- 3:40Speaker 5: And he was having a decent year. I mean, he
- 3:43Speaker 5: was having a batty year. But, you know, you can
- 3:47Speaker 5: only play nine guys. You know, actually eight guys and
- 3:49Speaker 5: then the pitcher. You never know what's going to happen,
- 3:54Speaker 5: as you know, with the injuries and so many different
- 3:57Speaker 5: things that can happen. A guy can tweak his ankle
- 4:01Speaker 5: or tweak his wrist, and he's out for two or
- 4:03Speaker 5: three days instead of the 14. So it's always good
- 4:06Speaker 5: to have those guys on the bench as pinch hitters
- 4:09Speaker 5: and guys that can come in late in the game
- 4:12Speaker 5: for defense, you know, for rice.
- 4:14Speaker 3: And look at Caffey.
- 4:15Speaker 2: I mean, he's been a solid— subbing for McMahon, but
- 4:19Speaker 2: he'll probably go back to the bench once he comes back.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Yeah, he looks a little lost, Cabby. What is he,
- 4:24Speaker 1: one for 25 or something like that?
- 4:26Speaker 2: That pitch clock controversy has really affected him. Ryan Pagano
- 4:29Speaker 2: here as well. What's it like to have Don Scala
- 4:31Speaker 2: with us in the studio?
- 4:32Speaker 1: We both work a month together.
- 4:33Speaker 6: Well, it certainly isn't every day you get to try
- 4:36Speaker 6: on a World Series ring, I'll say that much. And
- 4:38Speaker 6: it's crazy too, because Alex, we were just in the
- 4:39Speaker 6: Yankees museum, what was it, a couple weeks back when
- 4:42Speaker 6: Lombard made his MLB debut. We ventured into the museum,
- 4:46Speaker 6: saw the display with all the different World Series rings.
- 4:48Speaker 6: And I remember we looked at specifically those 70s rings
- 4:52Speaker 6: and all that, but getting to try one on for
- 4:54Speaker 6: the first time, and I said this on the show too,
- 4:57Speaker 6: looks even better in person. But also the one thing
- 5:00Speaker 6: you underestimate is how heavy those things are too, even
- 5:03Speaker 6: for the 70s compared to the rings that they make
- 5:06Speaker 6: now where, I mean, they're the size of your fists if.
- 5:08Speaker 3: We're crying out loud. Ryan, what's your take? Could the
- 5:11Speaker 3: Yankees have the division? I mean, you're more of a
- 5:12Speaker 3: Met guy, but you follow the Yankees a little bit here.
- 5:15Speaker 6: I've got to keep my sanity one way or another.
- 5:17Speaker 6: But the Yankees, they very much are still in contention
- 5:21Speaker 6: with the ALEs one way or another. I could see
- 5:23Speaker 6: them catching up to the race at some point, but
- 5:25Speaker 6: of course, and Dom, you pointed this out perfectly, they
- 5:27Speaker 6: need Judge back in the worst possible way. But to
- 5:30Speaker 6: their credit, the other bats, they've been holding their own.
- 5:33Speaker 6: They've been doing just enough to help out the pitching side.
- 5:37Speaker 6: But then here's the one thing that I'm wondering. When
- 5:41Speaker 6: Judge returns.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Who's going to be the odd man out here?
- 5:44Speaker 6: Because the way things stand, I mean, and Cashman, he
- 5:48Speaker 6: did fairly well at assembling this group of, well, I mean,
- 5:53Speaker 6: really apart from Rice and Judge, assembling a bunch of
- 5:56Speaker 6: platoon bats that can swap themselves in and out on
- 6:00Speaker 6: any given day and all that. And I feel like
- 6:01Speaker 6: they've sort of perfected that. But then once Judge comes back,
- 6:05Speaker 6: Who's going to be the odd guy out? Because it
- 6:08Speaker 6: will be Spencer Jones, right?
- 6:09Speaker 5: Hey, that's what I was just going to say. How
- 6:11Speaker 5: about Spencer Jones, what he's been doing?
- 6:12Speaker 1: He's doing pretty good. He's seeing Judge return.
- 6:15Speaker 3: I'm like, I've got to play my ass off right now.
- 6:17Speaker 6: Yeah, we're seeing a whole new aspect of Spencer Jones'
- 6:22Speaker 6: game that we haven't really seen in his couple months
- 6:24Speaker 6: in the bigs thus far. He's really making a case
- 6:26Speaker 6: to be on the playoff roster.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Let me just say this.
- 6:29Speaker 5: When you get enough at-bats and you get comfortable and
- 6:32Speaker 5: you start working and you start getting a little more
- 6:34Speaker 5: comfortable– you start to show what you can really do
- 6:39Speaker 5: that got you there to the big leagues.
- 6:42Speaker 1: And he's been hitting the ball hard off left-handers too.
- 6:45Speaker 3: He really has.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Not just right-handers.
- 6:46Speaker 5: So it's going to be interesting in who's going to
- 6:49Speaker 5: play and who's going to be on the bench, but
- 6:53Speaker 5: it's going to strengthen their depth, which they hadn't had prior.
- 6:59Speaker 1: To the deadline. Let's remember that.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Now you're a catcher. And I love Austin Miles.
- 7:04Speaker 1: I love when he can bring the team.
- 7:05Speaker 3: But that catching position has been weak this year. It's
- 7:08Speaker 3: a very surprising thing.
- 7:09Speaker 1: What are your take on that? Well, maybe, just maybe.
- 7:12Speaker 1: You know, they.
- 7:14Speaker 5: Don't want to put Rice behind the plate, you know,
- 7:17Speaker 5: during the season because it might affect his swing and
- 7:20Speaker 5: his legs. But you might be able to use him
- 7:24Speaker 5: in the playoffs because it's a short series.
- 7:27Speaker 1: And then you can add another bat.
- 7:29Speaker 3: I like that technique.
- 7:30Speaker 6: Yeah, whether it's Garcia or Goldschmidt, you pencil in one.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Of them at first. That's right.
- 7:34Speaker 6: Suddenly that lineup becomes much, much scarier come October, especially
- 7:39Speaker 6: with a healthy judge.
- 7:39Speaker 1: I'm sure they're thinking about that.
- 7:41Speaker 2: And we've all wanted a catcher for them, but they
- 7:43Speaker 2: kind of said, well, I guess between Sanchez and Wells,
- 7:46Speaker 2: we'll get them to where they need to be.
- 7:47Speaker 1: You know what, Alex?
- 7:49Speaker 5: We talked to Joni about that also, about possibly doing
- 7:53Speaker 5: a show or doing a segment on– What does it
- 7:57Speaker 5: take to make a trade? Everybody thinks you can just
- 7:59Speaker 5: go in there and make a trade. But you have
- 8:01Speaker 5: to have, you know, you have to be able to
- 8:04Speaker 5: have a match. You have to be able to, you know,
- 8:07Speaker 5: have the contracts, all of that stuff.
- 8:12Speaker 2: And a lot of these guys don't want to eat
- 8:14Speaker 2: the– the teams don't want to eat the contract sometimes
- 8:17Speaker 2: and all that.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Correct, correct.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Sometimes, like, you know, you're negotiating. Okay, well, we'll pay
- 8:20Speaker 1: $ 5 million of the $ 20 million. Who was it?
- 8:23Speaker 3: Cargo could have been a Met, but then he failed
- 8:25Speaker 3: his physical. I mean, those things happen, too.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Yeah, Carlos Gomez.
- 8:27Speaker 5: There's so many factors that are involved in trades, you know.
- 8:31Speaker 5: And also, a lot of these general managers, they like
- 8:33Speaker 5: to trade with certain people because.
- 8:35Speaker 1: They know they're not going to get fleeced.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Dom, we didn't get to ask you this on the air,
- 8:38Speaker 2: but I'll ask you here. Who was your catching icon
- 8:41Speaker 2: growing up?
- 8:42Speaker 3: Because obviously you loved that position. You were a bullpen catcher.
- 8:44Speaker 1: You've been a catcher your whole life. Well, you know,
- 8:45Speaker 1: I was actually a third baseman most of my career.
- 8:48Speaker 5: And then when I became a pro, I was a catcher. But,
- 8:53Speaker 5: of course, Thurman Munson was a guy that I emulated
- 8:56Speaker 5: because I liked his versatility. I liked his grittiness. And
- 8:59Speaker 5: that's the way I played. I played with a lot
- 9:02Speaker 5: of grit. My uniform was always dirty. And I think
- 9:05Speaker 5: that's one of the reasons why Billy Martin took a
- 9:07Speaker 5: liking to me and put me.
- 9:08Speaker 1: On his staff.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Was it a crazy clubhouse?
- 9:11Speaker 2: Our mutual friend, Rene Grone, always talks about that 70s team.
- 9:16Speaker 2: He may sound like it was just a madhouse in
- 9:17Speaker 2: that clubhouse. Was it crazy or was it a chilled
- 9:20Speaker 2: out place?
- 9:20Speaker 1: Well, there was a lot of controversy because of George.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Let's face it.
- 9:24Speaker 5: George came in the clubhouse at times and challenged guys.
- 9:28Speaker 5: I remember one time he came in with Rick Cerrone
- 9:31Speaker 5: and he told Rick Cerrone, I don't like the way
- 9:33Speaker 5: you're playing, this and that. And then Cerrone shot back
- 9:36Speaker 5: at him because Cerrone... just got out of a playoff game,
- 9:40Speaker 5: and he was all hyped up, and there was a
- 9:43Speaker 5: controversy there. They were going back and forth with each other.
- 9:47Speaker 5: The other time was when with Winfield, when Georgia confronted
- 9:52Speaker 5: Winfield about things, about calling him Mr.
- 9:55Speaker 1: May, and then that was kind of like a sticking
- 9:59Speaker 1: point between... the two guys. They started not to like
- 10:02Speaker 1: each other.
- 10:03Speaker 5: That's when the controversy happened with Howie Spearer that got
- 10:07Speaker 5: into the Yanks.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Now, I didn't know you were with the Yanks for
- 10:10Speaker 3: nine years.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Yeah, nine years.
- 10:12Speaker 5: Nine years I was there, 78 through 86. And I
- 10:16Speaker 5: was there through the times when Winfield came aboard and
- 10:19Speaker 5: Reggie was there. There was a second year and then
- 10:22Speaker 5: Bucky Dent came there. Yeah, Catfish Hunter, you know.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Sparky was in that.
- 10:28Speaker 5: Sparky had just left because they got Goose Gossage in 78.
- 10:33Speaker 5: You know, he came in and they were trying to
- 10:35Speaker 5: do it with two closers, but it didn't work.
- 10:38Speaker 6: Right.
- 10:38Speaker 5: Because what they did was they tried to do a
- 10:42Speaker 5: two-closer thing, and then if somebody falters, they're going to
- 10:45Speaker 5: bring the other guy in.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Now in those days.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Well, you're kind of connected to the Yankees, but shouldn't
- 10:49Speaker 2: they honor 50 years of that whole... Because now, 50
- 10:52Speaker 2: years of Chambliss, now 50 years next year of 77...
- 10:55Speaker 2: And then, of course, 78, which was the year they
- 10:57Speaker 2: were down 14 games in July and come back to
- 11:01Speaker 2: win the whole thing.
- 11:02Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, let's hope that they, I mean, we're
- 11:05Speaker 5: going to talk to Chris about that.
- 11:07Speaker 2: On Friday.
- 11:08Speaker 5: We're going to talk to Chris on Friday about that.
- 11:12Speaker 5: They kind of discount the 70s. and the early 80s
- 11:17Speaker 5: nowadays because they feel that a lot of people don't
- 11:20Speaker 5: remember those days, a lot of the kids. However, their
- 11:24Speaker 5: grandparents and their parents do who are bringing them to
- 11:27Speaker 5: the game.
- 11:28Speaker 1: So let's remember that they're the people spending the money. Exactly.
- 11:31Speaker 6: They're more or less just writing off those teams as, oh, well,
- 11:34Speaker 6: George just bought himself a championship back then, kind of
- 11:37Speaker 6: similar to how the modern-day Dodgers are doing it now. But,
- 11:42Speaker 6: you know, you've got to credit– George in his own
- 11:44Speaker 6: right too, being one of the pioneers to spend well
- 11:48Speaker 6: and spend big and look where it got them in
- 11:50Speaker 6: the 70s.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Immortality. I imagine, I want to ask about this because
- 11:54Speaker 3: I never ask you about this.
- 11:55Speaker 2: I imagine you were in the bullpen when Reggie slowed
- 11:57Speaker 2: up on that ball and Billy took him out.
- 12:00Speaker 1: No, that was 77. That was 77.
- 12:03Speaker 5: But that was again, you know, Billy and Reggie didn't
- 12:10Speaker 5: get along and Billy initiated it because he felt when
- 12:16Speaker 5: he was talking about Thurman Munson, he didn't like that.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Because Thurman was the captain.
- 12:21Speaker 5: The straw that stirs the drink and there's only one
- 12:26Speaker 5: guy that can do that. Reggie says, and I remember this,
- 12:32Speaker 5: Reggie says that he didn't really mean it that way,
- 12:35Speaker 5: but it was interpreted that.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Way by the press and the people.
- 12:41Speaker 5: So you don't really know because I wasn't there at
- 12:43Speaker 5: the time when he said this because that was before
- 12:45Speaker 5: my time.
- 12:46Speaker 1: But it never... Reggie tries.
- 12:51Speaker 5: See, Reggie was the type of guy that tried to
- 12:53Speaker 5: be one of the guys, but he would always say
- 12:56Speaker 5: something different.
- 12:57Speaker 1: That would deter that. You know what I mean?
- 13:00Speaker 5: Like, you know, it's like the person who tries to
- 13:03Speaker 5: do the right thing and then you say, okay, let's
- 13:06Speaker 5: give him a shot and then he says something wrong
- 13:08Speaker 5: and now, you know, you got to discount him again.
- 13:10Speaker 2: But there was definitely a love between the two of
- 13:13Speaker 2: them that, you know, I was highlighting Ray Negron's Bat Boy.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Like, the two of them did love each other at
- 13:18Speaker 3: the end of the day.
- 13:19Speaker 1: I mean, Reggie and Billy, right? I mean, there was
- 13:21Speaker 1: a kinship.
- 13:21Speaker 5: Well, I think they, I don't think they totally loved
- 13:24Speaker 5: each other because they always had that back background and
- 13:27Speaker 5: that thing behind them in the back of their heads that,
- 13:30Speaker 5: you know, they always had this conflict, but they respected
- 13:33Speaker 5: each other on the field is what Ray was referring to.
- 13:37Speaker 5: He respected Reggie for his heroics, and Reggie respected Billy
- 13:45Speaker 5: for getting the team going.
- 13:47Speaker 2: All right, you set an amazing stat, and this is
- 13:49Speaker 2: sort of the personality of George wanting to get it right.
- 13:52Speaker 2: How many managers and coaches did you see go through
- 13:54Speaker 2: that door?
- 13:55Speaker 5: I think it was, and don't quote me on it,
- 13:58Speaker 5: but it was somewhere around 11 or 12 different managers
- 14:01Speaker 5: and 18 pitching coaches and a few hitting coaches.
- 14:05Speaker 1: That's why today, if George was around, Boone would have.
- 14:09Speaker 5: Never seen eight years of managing, and his coaching staff
- 14:14Speaker 5: would have been fired a long time ago.
- 14:16Speaker 3: I kind of see that point there.
- 14:18Speaker 1: So we'll have to see.
- 14:19Speaker 3: One last thing, dense home run in 1978. And even
- 14:22Speaker 3: Chandler Sullivan, where were you during those moments?
- 14:24Speaker 5: 78, I was in the bullpen, okay? What a great
- 14:28Speaker 5: day that was. A beautiful, crisp September day, October day.
- 14:33Speaker 1: October.
- 14:33Speaker 5: October day, right? End of September, early October day. We
- 14:37Speaker 5: traveled up to Boston.
- 14:39Speaker 1: It was a game playoff, I believe. It was a
- 14:41Speaker 1: playoff game, yep.
- 14:43Speaker 5: They had a flip of the coin on where it
- 14:44Speaker 5: was going to be played, and they won the flip
- 14:46Speaker 5: of the coin.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Which, yeah, which, you know, George.
- 14:50Speaker 5: Got pissed off at that also because he lost the
- 14:53Speaker 5: coin flip. So we had to go up early in
- 14:55Speaker 5: the morning and take a plane flight and get up there.
- 14:59Speaker 1: But what a historic day that was, you know.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Three run or what was the home run? I think
- 15:05Speaker 3: it was a three run home run.
- 15:07Speaker 5: Bucky hit his three run home run and then Reggie
- 15:09Speaker 5: hit a home run to solidify it at the end
- 15:11Speaker 5: of the game.
- 15:12Speaker 1: And then Goose came in and faced Yastrzemski.
- 15:16Speaker 5: With a man on second base, okay, and threw a fastball,
- 15:21Speaker 5: 98-mile-an-hour fastball, right down the middle to Yastrzemski, and he just.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Got underneath it and popped it up to Nettles. He
- 15:28Speaker 1: could have very easily hit that ball out.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Amazing.
- 15:30Speaker 1: It was right there. All right.
- 15:33Speaker 3: And then, Chambliss, where were you for that? In the
- 15:35Speaker 3: bullpen as well, or where were you for the Chambliss?
- 15:36Speaker 1: No, the Chambliss home run, I was still in the
- 15:38Speaker 1: minor leagues. You were still in the minors. Yeah, I
- 15:39Speaker 1: was still in the minor leagues. I wasn't with the Yankees. Okay.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Growing up, obviously, you had a kinship with the Yankees.
- 15:44Speaker 2: What was it mean to join that organization as a Yankee?
- 15:47Speaker 1: Well, I was a big Mickey Mantle fan back then.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Who wasn't? Right. You know, back in those days, always
- 15:53Speaker 1: rooting for the Yankees.
- 15:55Speaker 5: You know, I had actually, my father bought me, because
- 15:59Speaker 5: my father was a Joe DiMaggio fan, my father bought
- 16:02Speaker 5: me a Yankee uniform.
- 16:04Speaker 1: In which I wore a lot with a number five
- 16:06Speaker 1: on the back.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Oh, I love that.
- 16:08Speaker 5: It's awesome.
- 16:08Speaker 1: With a number five on the back.
- 16:09Speaker 2: So basically, and you have a coaching clinic, so what
- 16:12Speaker 2: I'm hearing is When kids go to be coached by you,
- 16:15Speaker 2: they're sort of getting the tutelage of Billy because it
- 16:17Speaker 2: seems like he managed and coached you as well.
- 16:19Speaker 3: I mean, Billy Martin and all that. Did you take
- 16:22Speaker 3: a lot of his lessons into your own world?
- 16:23Speaker 7: You know, it's funny you should say that because when
- 16:25Speaker 7: I was coaching in college at Adelphi University, I even
- 16:29Speaker 7: said this to my wife when I'm talking about games
- 16:32Speaker 7: and situations. And I said to her, And even my expressions,
- 16:37Speaker 7: my facial expressions, were like Billy Martin, okay?
- 16:41Speaker 2: Amazing.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Well, like Billy Martin.
- 16:42Speaker 5: I got on guys, and I patted them on the
- 16:45Speaker 5: behind when they did well, and I kicked them in
- 16:47Speaker 5: the behind when they didn't do well, you know? But
- 16:50Speaker 5: even my facial expressions, I felt, and the way I
- 16:54Speaker 5: looked at the game, Billy Martin was a big mentor
- 16:57Speaker 5: for me.
- 16:57Speaker 3: Amazing.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Well, we're going to hear more about this on Fast
- 16:59Speaker 2: Pitch Friday, Fastball Friday, with Mr.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Don Scalabit.
- 17:03Speaker 3: Don, I want to do a little preview with you
- 17:04Speaker 3: right here.
