- 0:05It's so weird because we haven't talked to this guy in a while, and
- 0:08we're not even talking to him about him. Really this time around, Derks
- 0:11Bentley is here. How are you, man? I'm great. How are
- 0:13you doing, dude? Not bad at all. I got to ask you.
- 0:15We're just kind of talking a little bit about, uh, the NHL.
- 0:18You're obviously a big NHL guy, hopefully a big Preds guy. Anything
- 0:22else, absolutely, why listen, I'll take the last time we saw each
- 0:28other was at the game. I think, uh who it was a Chicago
- 0:31game. I think I saw you there. It was probably the last game
- 0:33we won. Yeah, it's been a minute. I know we're after great
- 0:36there and the energy there is great. The team has great passion, just
- 0:41you know, being being a guy who is very involved hockey wise. I
- 0:45mean your son, right, you're in the ring to practice this morning.
- 0:50The morning? Yeah him. When when the NHL had the All Star Game
- 0:54here, I still see footage of Dirk's Bentley out there. What's it like
- 0:58to put yourself out there that way? I mean, yeah, well that
- 1:02lives forever. That was one of the scariest moments. James Neil hit me
- 1:04up to come out there and do a little you know, two on one
- 1:07breakaway thing or two on zero. And I mean I almost missed jump in
- 1:11the ice and almost fell down and wearing like jeans and skates, which is
- 1:15kind of weird, and uh, thank god I got the got the goal.
- 1:18I think it's the last goal of scored. Uh but no, it's
- 1:21it's it's so fun. I mean, I love we had the Winter Classic
- 1:23here. Nashville is just a hard town for anybody else to compete with.
- 1:26I mean, I loved watching Toronto. Would love to have been up there
- 1:29this year for the All Star Break, But man, Nashville just has it
- 1:33all here, you know, just there's so many artists that live here,
- 1:34and everyone loves hockey here and the Lower Broadways right next to the arena,
- 1:40it's it's a special place for for when the teams come here, they all
- 1:44talk about how much they love playing here. So I'm biased. I think
- 1:47nashal is the best place to put the They just have it here every year.
- 1:51So we I want to talk about this project because it's such a unique
- 1:53project. Yeah, and I'll get to that in a second. But you
- 1:56bring up Lower Broadway. Obviously you were one of the first names up there,
- 2:01right as far as when you open your bar, Yeah, at what
- 2:05point were you're like, yeah, this is the way I'm going, Like,
- 2:07how does that? How does that happen for an artist? Well,
- 2:08I remember I've had this Barkle whiskey row. I had one in Arizona's.
- 2:10It was pretty It's pretty wild. The what the waitresses are wearing and what
- 2:15goes on inside it's pretty it's pretty crazy. And I remember my manager saying,
- 2:19Hey, we should do one in Nashville, and I was like,
- 2:20Nashville's not can handle this. This is like a Scotts Still Arizona like pretty
- 2:24wild scene. And but she was right. I mean, National has changed
- 2:28so much in the last you know, ten years, seven years, It's
- 2:31gone. Downtown's gone from being kind of the hockey talks to being Bacheler Central
- 2:37and it's pretty wild scene. And so when that opportunity came to buy that
- 2:40building with the old building that is uh the growing guitar shop. So that's
- 2:44where I used to go look for guitars and stuff that I couldn't afford,
- 2:46but we'll go put them off the wall and play them a little bit.
- 2:49So just the couldn't Aford the guitar. So you're about the building. It's
- 2:51been I mean, I am buying the building. It might be a song
- 2:53there somewhere, but then again buy the building. And so just it's a
- 2:57lot of pride and that that location. And uh, it's still I think
- 3:00one of the best bars down there. It's it's it's just has a great
- 3:02energy to it. It's not I mean I think people go down there.
- 3:07Eric's building a bar and Garth just put his thing up, and everyone spends
- 3:08so much time thinking about detail, you know, how to make their bar
- 3:12unique. When people are just coming here and look for Cold Core's light and
- 3:15they don't care. What do are they going to like this one? Here's
- 3:16some country music and a good drink of beer. But we put a lot
- 3:20of time into it and it feels good. It's a great location, and
- 3:22I love the Whiskey Jam is down there now and Ward Gunther is down there
- 3:25doing the Whiskey Jam. So it's there's some original music on Lower Broadway.
- 3:29It's one of the few places doing that. It came out this past week.
- 3:32Jason ld And just opened a third location. Right. Uh, it's
- 3:36it's in Pittsburgh. It's obviously here and where else is the other one?
- 3:39Gallinburg? Cool? Yeah, everyone's going to Gallinburg. Yeah. How how
- 3:43hands are you? How how hands on are you in the growth and like,
- 3:47yeah, we we just try to We have one in Denver, Phoenix,
- 3:51here, We looked at Las Vegas, Chicago. We looked around a
- 3:53little bit. But I'm not trying to like to me, it's just like
- 3:57quality control and find the right places to do. I don't want to blow
- 4:00it up like Toby Kese. Uh. You know, I love this bar
- 4:02that was everywhere and it kind of ends up being a little I'm kind of
- 4:05you know, I'm hands on in like discussions about it, but I'm not
- 4:09actually out there trying to find locations and stuff. So I get you.
- 4:12Yeah, Now let's transition because I want to talk about what you got playing
- 4:15the rest of the year. Obviously you're getting back on the road in a
- 4:17little while here. When I got a phone call about this project last week,
- 4:23I was like, at first, I go what and wow, because
- 4:27that's kind of my That was my reaction too. It's a concept, it's
- 4:30it's essentially a Tom Petty tribute album. Yeah, it's called Petty Country.
- 4:33Yeah, it's coming out in May. Yeah, obviously Tom Petty, you
- 4:38think folk music, but I also don't like put him in I don't put
- 4:42him in country. I don't put him in folky, I don't put him
- 4:45in rock. Yeah, he kind of defines all these genes. And you're
- 4:47talking about Lower Broadway. I mean, Tom Petty's one those guys whose music
- 4:50you would hear down Lower Broadway. He's one of those those when people come
- 4:54here, they want to hear the country, but they like hearing some covers
- 4:56and the song I Gotta do in this album American Girls. When I've been
- 4:59here the country singers, you know, cover for a long time. And
- 5:02he's also yeah, bluegrass, you know, the dumb A Curry Band,
- 5:06one of my favorite blue grass bands cut a song is called Long Long Road,
- 5:10Love is a Love is a Long Long Road, and they did a
- 5:13bluegrass version of it. Marty Stewart cut a running Down a Dream. So
- 5:17he's his his the country music, not just the singers, also the audience,
- 5:23but certainly the singers. Artists in this town have always long admired Tom
- 5:27Petty, and he's the guy that the artists admired. He has the critical
- 5:29CREWD but he also has someone's down Lord Broadway drinking a beer, you know,
- 5:31play play American Girl, So he kind of has he covers it pretty
- 5:35well, and I know he's pretty outspoken on country music. He is.
- 5:39He has opinions about you know, modern country music versus the traditional stuff.
- 5:44He you know, he was part of HE and he's he, you know,
- 5:46he's I think he inducted he's inducted somebody into the Hall of Fame,
- 5:53the Country Music Hall of Fame. Well the god was it not Elvis?
- 5:59But uh, Blue Sweat's Shoes, who's that? And that's anyway, Carl
- 6:02Perkins. I think he inducted Carl Perkins into the Hall of Fame. So
- 6:04he's he has a lot of respect for the traditional country music. But I'm
- 6:08younger fans. I've been doing an American Girl on my show now for a
- 6:11little bit, and uh, I mean people love that song. So like
- 6:14you said, you're like wow, then like what then? Wow? Like
- 6:16when I was asking part of this project, I was like, yes,
- 6:18for sure, And then when I found out they wanted to make that song
- 6:20a single, I was like what Because Dolly Parton's on this record and George
- 6:25Strait's on this record and Chris Stapleton's on this record, so I was like,
- 6:28you want you know, you're gonna go with our song for the single,
- 6:30And then I was like yeah, wow, because uh, the song
- 6:34did turn out really well. You know, we put a lot of time
- 6:36in the track the musicians, and it feels like it feels like me singing
- 6:41a Tom Petty song. And I was really happy with the way the vocal
- 6:44worked out on the track. I sang in a few times to really try
- 6:46to lean into the vocal like Tom does, and uh, and it's you
- 6:50know, it's a win win for me because having this song and the live
- 6:54show is a doesn't doesn't suck. It's a nice piece to have a tucked
- 6:59into the set for sure. Did you get to pick the song where they
- 7:01like, yeah, yeah, I couldn't believe that song was I got to
- 7:03pick the song, and I want to you know a lot of times I'm
- 7:05late in these things. And then like a song you get is still a
- 7:08great song and not like one of the premier songs, but yeah, American
- 7:11Girl was still I jumped on it when I heard about the opportunity. So
- 7:15I got an American Girl and and worked out pretty good. We talked about
- 7:18the bar obviously this project. You whether it's your management, you, your
- 7:24team, whoever. I'd imagine there's a lot of requests for you to be
- 7:27a part of a lot of stuff, especially with that way. It's some
- 7:30of it with twenty two number one songs, Yeah, something like that.
- 7:32So with with all you have done and what all you continue to do,
- 7:35I'm sure those requests come in what made this one? That's yeah, yeah,
- 7:39yeah, there's I mean thankful to get you know, there's sometimes you
- 7:42to get the request I get there. Sometimes you can't do them all.
- 7:44And I think it's just about having a really honest dialogue with the ones that
- 7:46you know, an artist wants to do a song with you, and you're
- 7:48like, I just know if that works for me, you know, just
- 7:50being honest about it, and uh, or it works with the schedule and
- 7:53the timing. Uh, this one is just it's Tom Petty and and uh,
- 7:57you know, Big Machines put it out. And I've always had a
- 8:00lot of respect for Scott Burshetta and and his team. Got a few folks
- 8:03in here with us today from the team that's helping them launch this this song.
- 8:07So you know, it's one of those things, you know, if
- 8:09you're gonna put the time and to cut the track and bring the musicians and
- 8:11make it a great track and put your heart into that and then go sing
- 8:13it and and get this track right, you want to be you know,
- 8:16you want to do it for something that feels like there's there's someone on the
- 8:20other end promoting it there, you know, and putting their heart and soul
- 8:22to it as well. So having a great team behind it's important. And
- 8:26I'd be like an act. I think about actor, like, you know,
- 8:28we're friends with Keith Urban, you know, he's a pal and Nicoles
- 8:31of buddies of ours, and you think about looking at what I think of
- 8:33her sometimes the movie she makes. You gonna make these movies and you pour
- 8:37your life into them, and then they're not promoted that well or they're not
- 8:41edited that well, and you're just like, oh my gosh. So that
- 8:43happens sometimes. But this one, it's been like a great just everyone coming
- 8:46together behind it and excited about it, and it's it's just been been a
- 8:52really good, good one so far. So I'm really excited for the fans
- 8:54to hear it. I think they'll hear it in the track. You know,
- 8:56there's some banjo rolling along along with the big guitars too, and some
- 8:58mandolin, and it's it's what I've always tried to do, which is to
- 9:03mix that bluegrassy sound with the big arena kind of country rock sound. And
- 9:05it feels like it captured it pretty well when it comes to where it falls
- 9:11in. I mean, this is kind of like the first domino for you
- 9:13for the whole year, right, Yeah, when are you back on the
- 9:16road? When are you? Yeah? This has been a nice piece.
- 9:20I'm writing songs right now. I'm going back in the studio March to cut
- 9:22some more stuff. But uh, I mean, as like I said,
- 9:24there's real blessings. I love the song so much and I love the way
- 9:28it turned out. I love having my live show. So it's kind of
- 9:30bought me some more time when it comes to my own stuff. So it's
- 9:33again and it's a it's the gift that keeps on giving, but it just
- 9:35gives me more time to work on my own stuff. But we're going back
- 9:37out on the road in June. I got Chase Rice coming out in the
- 9:41road with us. I have all these great openers, Lee Brice is coming
- 9:43out. Randy Rogers band, who I love, part of that red dirt
- 9:46scene. He and I've been buddies for a long time. Zach Tops coming
- 9:48out. I was just writing songs with Stephen Wilson Junior. I don't know
- 9:52if you're aware of who he is, but he is incredible and yeah,
- 9:56so that's that. Tours gonna be amazing. Tickets are on sale now,
- 9:58which is it's a nice thing, so buy some tickets. But yeah,
- 10:03me, me and I neber too. Chase. Last time Chase and I
- 10:05did a tour together was twenty fifteen and he was opening Opening Access. Is
- 10:09the first time he let people like direct support and he's been a long time,
- 10:11good buddy. We get mistaken for each other a lot, which could
- 10:15be fun on the road. We'll see all that he can. If I'm
- 10:18not feeling good, he can sub and do my show. No, but
- 10:22he's just a great guy and it's gonna be a really fun summer. How
- 10:26do the artists that you've brought with you along the way. Obviously it's somebody
- 10:30maybe you believe in, somebody you're a fan of, or some buzz working
- 10:33with them throughout your career and then obviously being a part of projects like this.
- 10:37How does it change, you know when you first came around to the
- 10:41Dirks Bentley we hear today? How has all of that the road, the
- 10:45records or all of it? Yeah? Everything, I mean the road has
- 10:48always been for me about two urning people that I like more than touring people
- 10:52that can make money or sell tickets. I had a lot opportunities early in
- 10:56the day to go out some bigger opening bands that weren't really the same kind
- 10:58of music that I liked, and I chose to do two years of touring
- 11:01with Cross Canadian Ragweed, a band that a lot of people listening probably haven't
- 11:03heard of, but they're part of the Randy Rogers, Stoney l Rue,
- 11:07Red Dirt scene, Wade Bowen and we played small bars and I lost a
- 11:13few years of my life from drinking all the egger bombs that we did,
- 11:15But uh, it was just I enjoyed. That was fun for me.
- 11:18I'd rather do small bars with someone I love than go open for someone that
- 11:20in a big arena that I wouldn't want to So that's always still been the
- 11:24basis even now when I'm picking acts. Of course, you want to find
- 11:26somebody that's successful, but really it's like who do you want to spend your
- 11:30time with that summer. This last year had Jordan Davis without out with us,
- 11:33and I've been a huge fan of his and uh so that was a
- 11:37The timing worked out great too, because he's really taken off and this time
- 11:41around have Chase Rice. He's just someone that's fun to be around, and
- 11:43also he's hugely successful. So it's trying to find a good blend of that,
- 11:48but more weight on just who you want to spend your time with.
- 11:50That's gonna be fun. Yeah, it's gonna be fun. To her,
- 11:52it'll be great. Plus you're to the point where he's crazy. He's lived,
- 11:56he like has his dog, he travels with everywhere. I got him
- 11:58on this gig. I have a sponsorship of Sessa of the airplane company,
- 12:01and every year I go fish with them up in Canada. It's a great
- 12:05gig. I go fish with their customers and stuff, and you helicopter into
- 12:09these locations and the helicopter leads and you're just in the middle of this river
- 12:13in these glacier mountains with you and the salmon and the eagles and the bears,
- 12:16that's all. It's there and it's like wow. And so he came
- 12:20on this thing and he brought his dog, and so his dog like choppered
- 12:24in and landed and say he's got his fly rod and his dog with him.
- 12:26And I hear he's like he's got his airstream. He's kind of like
- 12:30ones. He's kind of traveling on his own out there on the road.
- 12:31So it'll be fun to see how what he's been up to. But he's
- 12:35always been someone that's been very into outdoor pursuits and adventure, and so I
- 12:39think we'll think it'll be a fun summer. Last thing I want to ask
- 12:41you is, as we wrap up, the big Game has happening this weekend.
- 12:45I'm definitely an NHL guy. Yes, football, I like it's fine,
- 12:48yeah, yeah, do you have a dog? You said a big
- 12:50game? I was thinking hockey and like what no, uh yeah no.
- 12:54I've watched more football this year than I ever have a lot of us because
- 12:58I got a thirteen year old and fifteen year old and they love Taylor Swift,
- 13:01so like they've made the cans. My daughter, my fictional has never
- 13:03watched a lot of football before she goes I was saying, I was making
- 13:07fun of her about being a Chiefs fan, and I go, You're not
- 13:11a cheap She goes, Dad have always been a Chiefs fan. And then
- 13:13literally thirty seconds later, Dad, are the Chiefs professional or college? But
- 13:22it's been amazing. I know people are like bashing the whole, like Kelsey
- 13:24Taylor thing. I've loved it because it's made football in my house a lot
- 13:28more and I don't have to apologize for watching it. And I've watched every
- 13:31playoff game this year. I mean, I was so sad when it wasn't
- 13:35on, you know, recently the off weekend before the super Bowl. But
- 13:39you know, I feel like that's the real Football's over. The super Bowl's
- 13:43just a spectacle now, you know. I mean it's such a weird game.
- 13:45The halftimes like twice as long, so the players come out kind of
- 13:48the second half is weird. It's just but uh, you know, I
- 13:52you know, I like, I was also really pulling for the lines too.
- 13:56I left the forty nine ers and the Brock Pooty story, but I'm
- 14:00man, I was pulling for the Lions so hard. I just we love
- 14:01Michigan in all sports and the Lions with a story and Dan Campbell was a
- 14:07great coach. But I grew up a Vikings fan, so I oh sorry,
- 14:09yeah, yeah yeah. The Vikings have had some successful the years,
- 14:13the Lions have not. But it'll be a good game. Now. I'm
- 14:16just looking forward to watching the game and all the everything, you know,
- 14:18the whole thing. I appreciate it, ud go see you, buddy,
- 14:22appreciate it. You got it all right. Let's take a picture and get
- 14:24you out of here.
