Transcript
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Everyone's a Critic, a show where a guest picks a movie rated below 40% on rotten tomatoes and tells us why critics got it wrong.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Yanis Cove, a formerly pretentious film school student who 10 years later sees the error of his ways.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: My guest today is comedian, filmmaker, and master of the donkey roll, Ari Ananda Pootri.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Welcome, Ari.
- 0:24SPEAKER_02: Hi.
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: How's it going?
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: That's great.
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 0:29SPEAKER_02: Um, no, it's going good.
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: It's going good.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: That was my first time seeing you.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: It was like a video that went around on Twitter of you doing the donkey roll thing.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm really happy with that video because Yorma Chakone saw that video and I was like, that's it, I'm done, I'm out, I'm gonna get on the game right now while whilst I'm ahead.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, yeah.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: That's when yeah, I'm good, I'm good, I'm good.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: It's yeah.
- 0:51SPEAKER_02: How else are you supposed to be in a global pandemic other than I know?
- 0:55SPEAKER_02: Alright, like I'm okay.
- 0:57unknown: Yeah.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: There's a reason I've started doing a podcast.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:01SPEAKER_02: Because mine's just on hold because I was like, you know what, I'm tired.
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: I'll do something.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: I'll do it later.
- 1:09SPEAKER_02: Cool.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: So the movie you've picked today, you decided to go with Showgirls.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: So do you want to tell us why you decided to go with Showgirls?
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: I decided to go with Showgirls because, well, one, it's very on brand for me because I think I talk about this film on the internet more than well, not more than any other film.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: It's sort of like I talk about this film as much as I talk about Uncut Gems because I love that film as well.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: I have like, oh man.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: But Showgirls is really special to me because it's insane and it's so much fun and it's so bad, but the production value is so high, and there are so many points that just oh it's it's crazy and I adore it.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: Like it's really special to me.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: It's a very strange film to be like, oh my god, I love it so much.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: But yeah, I love Paul Verhoven.
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: So like it's one of those films where like not a lot of people will like be willing to talk about about him, but like as a director, because everybody's like, oh RoboCop, uh like Starship Troopers.
- 2:06SPEAKER_02: But I was like, what about this one?
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'd seen Robocop and Starship Troopers, I'd never seen Showgirls until last night.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, not many, like it was wild.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Wild.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: It's a ride, it really is.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: Like you were you were telling me earlier before we started recording that like you had to pause it and then continue with the morning.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and you were like the fourth person to say that to me this year.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, because I did we talked about this on um the Prince Charles podcast, and then my co-host was like, dude, it took me forever to watch this again, it was so stupid.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: And I remember like I I've never ever done that.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: I've never been like, no, I'm gonna continue it tomorrow.
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: It sucks me in.
- 2:44SPEAKER_02: I don't know why.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: But well, it was 2 a.m.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: So I was like, I need to stop.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: I need to I can't keep watching this now.
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: Time isn't real anymore.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: Let's get that.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that is true.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: So, what is what is your history with this movie?
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: My history with this film.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: Um, I saw it as a teenager, I think I was like 16 or 17, and I was like, oh, this is weird.
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: Awful time.
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: I was like, I'm so I'm so self-conscious about my body, I like really am into like oh my god, I hate men.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: But um, like it was really I was I didn't make much of it at the time.
- 3:19SPEAKER_02: And then um, when I started working at the Prince Charles Cinema in London, um we had a screening of it, and I hadn't seen it in years by that point, and it was on 35mm, everybody got free beers.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: I was like, this is the best thing I've ever seen in my life, and I think it might have been pride, like in 2018 or something.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, it was it was so much fun.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Like that is the way to watch it, like a massive group of people drinking.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: The best crowd, like, and that's the thing I love about it that Showgirls is such a communal experience as well, and everybody that loves it um will sort of say the same thing.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: And I saw a documentary at um London Film Festival last year called You You Don't Know Me about the Making of Showgirls.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: It's the best thing, and the director that's a great name for it.
- 4:04SPEAKER_02: It's it's a brilliant name for it, and the director is like the sweetest dude.
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: Um, I watched it twice because I got I got to see it um like for free at work and then I went to see it again.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: And it was it was yeah, that same thing of like I think a large group of weirdos have really loved, like latched onto this film and been like, there's something in here that speaks to me.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: So that's sort of what everyone's been with.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: But yeah, that's my history with it.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Well, what speaks to you about it?
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: Um, just the insanity of it all, and like it's so lavish and expensive, and I love the whole like 90s overlined lip liner look and all the litter and the crystals and the fucking monkey that smells like shit all the time.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, we have to talk about the monkey.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: Oh, I love the monkey.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: Top three monkeys in entertainment.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: That monkey and Annie's boobs from community.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah, Annie's boobs number one.
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: Number one, yeah.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: No doubt.
- 4:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: How many times do you think you've seen it at this point?
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: Good god.
- 5:00SPEAKER_02: Um how many times have I seen it?
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: Okay, so in the last year alone, so 2020, I think I've seen it four times.
- 5:08SPEAKER_02: Um in 2019, I saw it three times spaced out.
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: Um then it but now you have an excuse.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, now I'm like, I'm I'm depressed.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna watch my comfort film, which has a horrible like scene in it and bad acting everywhere.
- 5:24SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: Like it's one of those films where like, okay, you're you're gonna expect me to defend it.
- 5:29SPEAKER_02: I will defend it, but I know it's like trash.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: I think that's a lot of the films that are gonna be on this list that I go through.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Like everyone knows they're bad, but they love them for some reason, and I want to know why.
- 5:40SPEAKER_02: And that's like that whole thing is what is it that you love about it?
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: That's what I want to see.
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: And that you went to film school as well, right?
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I graduated last year, and what I realized is that I didn't allow myself to like shitty films because I was in film school.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: Because everybody that's exactly what happened.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because everybody is up some other director's ass, and I'm like, just let me like Fast and Furious, leave me alone.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: Like I'm gonna like yeah, like you can make good movies and you can also enjoy shit.
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: Like it doesn't matter.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: I think it literally took me leaving film school to realise oh, I I can enjoy this other stuff.
- 6:13SPEAKER_02: For sure, yeah.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: I don't have to watch Fellini all the time, I don't have to watch Curaçao.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's fine to like other things.
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: I don't have to crush up like Louis Bunuel films and snort them up my nose anymore.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: It's yeah, it's great.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: Look at us name-dropping directors.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: I told you I was pretentious at one point.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I still am, but you know.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: I stopped watching all of those.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: I'm just like, I'm done.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: I just want to watch things I enjoy now.
- 6:36unknown: Yeah.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: That's good.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: I've I've I've I've I understand the canon, I'd understand like what how things get made now.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: It's like I get it.
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: I get it.
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't need to do this.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: Let me watch Synecdoche New York eight times.
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: Um anyway.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: Oh, I put that's like leaning into that that kind of level though.
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah, I'm still pretentious, see?
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: So yeah, it holds up.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: How did you first come across it?
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: Do you remember?
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: Jesus.
- 7:01SPEAKER_02: Um, so I was like 16.
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: 16, yeah, 16 or 17.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: And this was like, I think this is when I really started getting into like proper being pretentious about a film.
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: So I think I got into Verhoven like properly, just being like, okay, I'll see everything he's ever made.
- 7:13SPEAKER_02: And then I remember downloading Shadow Girls just being like, oh no, like if I get caught watching, if I get caught by my parents watching this, I'm dead.
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: Like in a really like Muslim household.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, I can't, like, but it it remains like it was one of those things where like I don't I don't think I made much of it at the time because I don't think I understood it at the time.
- 7:34SPEAKER_02: I thought I was like, Yeah, that's a good point.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: It's like I was like at 16, you're really like taking it all in.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I was like, this bitch is insane, just like do your job, they will give you money.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: Like, stop this right now, and like you have zero, and you have zero artistic integrity anyway.
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: So just just go along with it.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: Like, okay, you push somebody down the stairs, cool.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: Now own it.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: Like now deliver, ma'am, deliver anyway.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: But yeah, yeah.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: So like, are your parents aware of like your uh your love of it now?
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: I don't know actually.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: I think they know that I like I I watch a like a larger amount of films than they're aware of, like, and I don't think they mind, but you know, I don't think I don't think they specifically know that I'm really into showgirls.
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: I wrote an like I read a review about you don't know me a while ago.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: They might have read it and they'd be like, when did she watch that film?
- 8:21SPEAKER_02: But like, you know, it's it hasn't been brought up to me, and if it does, like I'm I'm not here.
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: Like I suddenly I can't watch, suddenly I can't see, suddenly I can't read.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: Where can you read that review?
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: Um you can read that on uh Scream Queens, actually.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: Screen Queens.
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: Screen Queens.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: Screen Queens, yeah.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: Oh cool.
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: The gang.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: That's wonderful.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna look that up and I don't I want to watch that documentary as well.
- 8:41SPEAKER_02: It's so good.
- 8:41SPEAKER_02: The trailer just came out because like I don't think it's yeah, it's it's finished.
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, it finished its festival run um a couple months ago.
- 8:49SPEAKER_02: The trailer just came out, and it's wonderful.
- 8:51SPEAKER_02: Like the way the director sort of cut it together, he uses a bunch of footage from like Verhoven's other films, like even the ones he did in um the Netherlands, and it was it was really good.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: Verhoven is a very, very weird director.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: Such a weird dude.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: I never know what to make of his films at all.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: Like I saw Robocop way too young.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I was like maybe 10 years old.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: I should not have yeah, I should not have been watching Robocop.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: And then I think I saw Star Chip Troopers around like 13 or something as well.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Again, way too young.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: And so like my my experience with Showgirls was I seen literally, I'd seen that sex scene.
- 9:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the one in the pool.
- 9:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, of course.
- 9:31SPEAKER_02: That's all I knew of it.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's insane.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: That's all I knew of it, because everyone, everyone's like, oh, you've got to see this, it's so crazy.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: You've got to see this sex scene.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: Watched it, and I was like, do I really want to watch the rest of this film now?
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: No, you don't.
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: And you shouldn't, you know, you should.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: And that's until yesterday.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: It's not even the worst film.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: Like, it's not even the worst scene in the film, is what I meant to say.
- 9:53SPEAKER_02: Like, oh no, no, there's way worse scenes.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: Way worse, and like things that are indefensible.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, that scene it's so funny because you you okay.
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: The first time you see it, you're like, okay, she looks like a fish, she's just thrashing around.
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: Alright, cool.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: I was like, Kyle McLachlan, I thought better of you.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: I love you and Twin Peaks, but I'm out right now.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: Um, your hair is weird.
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: Anyway, and then you pay attention to the background, and there's all these like neon um neon palm trees and the dolphin.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I picked up on that.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's I wrote those down.
- 10:24SPEAKER_02: So perfect.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: It's so it's like those, and then the dolphins like with the splashing the water out of their mouths, like this.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: It's ridiculous.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: Oh, it was it's it's insane.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: I was like, this is the height of luxury.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: Right, so I think we should get into actually like going through the plot like how the all the plot and everything.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: So it opens with like it opens with her hitchhiking to Vegas, basically.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: She's like she's like in the mountain town.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: I couldn't quite I did you know where it was?
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: I didn't see.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: Oh, I did not.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: Never showed.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: No.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: I think it It says like 300 miles or something to Vegas.
- 10:59SPEAKER_02: It's like the outskirts of Nevada or something.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I guess so.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: And I was like, I don't know how the US works.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I've been to Nevada, I just don't I've never been to Vegas though.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: So I've probably been there until I was mounted together.
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:12SPEAKER_02: But you never got into a stranger's car and headed to Vegas.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: So yeah.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: So she meets uh some guy, this guy picks her up in a pickup truck, and it's like uh he starts flirting with her in there, and he's like, and then she just suddenly pulls a knife on him.
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, and I think that you know it.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, you're immediately like, this is I know exactly this kind of character now.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: I know who you are.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: You're a tough cookie.
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you're a tough cookie and you are batshit crazy.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: Oh man.
- 11:41SPEAKER_02: Uh but and you're not scared of anything, literally nothing, except for maybe like an older woman.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: Um Yeah, that's a good point.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: So then they get to Vegas and he immediately gives her like$10 to go play the slop sheets.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: And he's just like, wait, what?
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: And he's like, I'm gonna go, I'll meet up with you.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: And you're like, wait, why are you doing that?
- 12:00SPEAKER_02: Why are you sending her in there?
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: But the visuals are incredible.
- 12:04SPEAKER_02: Like that jacket in that casino and all the lights.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: Like, oh, yes.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: The clothing in this film.
- 12:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the the costume design is insane.
- 12:13SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 12:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the costume design, the lack of clothing, the like Oh yeah, I should say the lack of clothing as well.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: It's all incredible.
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: Like, again, it's one of those things where like this looks so good, but why is it so bad?
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: But yeah, everything in this should work, yeah, but it doesn't.
- 12:30SPEAKER_02: But it doesn't.
- 12:32SPEAKER_02: White kind of curse, but then at the same time, it's like, oh, I like it, so fuck it.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I will say that I'm gonna say this now.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: I loved watching this.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: I enjoyed the hell out of it.
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: I had so much fun watching it.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: It's a ride, it's crazy, and I love that kind of I love that kind of crazy.
- 12:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:50SPEAKER_02: And I love the whole look as well of like, oh, it's it's insane, and it doesn't care that you think it's insane.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: I think that's why I enjoy the most about it.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: I think there's one thing about it is that I would say I think everyone is in on it.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: Except for Elizabeth Burke.
- 13:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: She does not it doesn't feel like she's in on it.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it doesn't feel like she like she she's in on it, but I feel so bad for her because after Showgirls, her career just like vaporized, and I was like, that sucks, and she's so lovely, but she's coming back doing all this saved by the bell stuff, so that's good.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's great that she's got that again.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: It's I think I also wonder if it's like half because she went from Safe by the Bell, which is so clean cut, to that.
- 13:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: That might have I don't know if it's just I don't know if it's straight the fact that it's like a bad film, as much as it is like she's so anti-the Jesse character she used to play.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: It's it's there's probably like a combination of things, but completely.
- 13:44SPEAKER_02: It's more so I think um I forgot where I read this, but it's that whole thing of I think in the 90s was huge, it was like a huge thing to vilify women to do with like anything to do with scandal or sex, like around the Monica Lewinsky thing.
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: And then this happened to sort of break it's like that whole Miley effect of she broke out of Hannah Montana into like can't be shamed, bangers era.
- 14:06SPEAKER_02: This was out for Elizabeth Barkley, but yeah, at the time everybody was like, Oh, I'm not okay with this.
- 14:12SPEAKER_02: Like nobody was really like okay with it or cool with it yet, apart from the people that got the film and sort of I guess it was so it was like mid-90s, yeah.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: So it's like a big difference, isn't it?
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: Well, not even a big difference, it's a difference to now for sure, where yeah, that I don't think that would be as big a thing this day, like and like to the it would be like the mighty extent of oh, this is strange, but okay, fine, do what you want to do.
- 14:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and then like I think it was also teetering on that shift in like what '94 and '95, where they were kind of like, okay, actually, um, a lot of people were thinking the other way.
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: We're like, actually, no, this is okay.
- 14:49SPEAKER_02: And it it's at it to some extent it's empowering.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: Um, as in her taking the role, not the film itself, which we'll get into.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: Um I'm sure.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: I'm sure we'll get into.
- 14:59SPEAKER_02: But yeah, no, it's it's a it's a whole bunch of things, and it's really unfortunate that it like happened to her that way.
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: Have you seen anything else she's been in?
- 15:07SPEAKER_02: Um, I've seen her in First Wives Club, um, I've seen her in a bunch of like TV stuff, like where she just guest stars, which is pretty cool.
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: What did I see her in recently where I went, oh, no me.
- 15:18SPEAKER_02: I can't remember, but I had a freak out, and I was like, that's how you refer to it, just my brother was like, What is going on?
- 15:25SPEAKER_02: Um, it's Jesse from Save L.
- 15:29SPEAKER_02: Um, anyway.
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: Uh okay, so she like, yeah, she gets the$10, she goes to play the slots, she instantly wins.
- 15:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's Vegas baby.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're gonna win the first time, and then she then the guy leaves.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the guy leaves off with her stuff.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: And she gets and then she like starts beating on a car outside, turns, and then gets into a fight with this woman who turns out to be her best friend.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, takes pity on her and says, Oh, come and stay with me.
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, complete stranger.
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna stay with yeah.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: You can stay in my trailer for and then it cuts to six weeks later, and they are the best of friends.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: And they're the best of friends, and she's doing her nails and eating potato chips.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: It's fantastic.
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: I love Molly, I think Molly's my favourite character throughout all of the things.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: Molly is the only sympathetic character.
- 16:19SPEAKER_02: She's the only sympathetic character, and she gets it the worst.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: And I was like, what are you trying to say with this film?
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: Which I'm sure we'll get into, but yeah, it's yeah, I think we'll discuss that later once we get to that point.
- 16:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, chronologically.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: We'll run chronologically because otherwise we're gonna take a big shift into another direction.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: Completely.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: Uh so she goes with and so she then goes with Molly to uh work, basically, to watch her.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: Molly's a costume designer, I guess, or something like that, isn't she?
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah, yeah, she's like a like the seamstress on production.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: And it's for like a fancy I don't know.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: What is the kind of show that they're doing?
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: I don't entirely it's a high-end show they have at hotels that like white people watch, I don't know.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: Is that a real is that a real thing because it doesn't seem real?
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: It's one of those things where like I think it's just like a Vegas residency of that production.
- 17:11SPEAKER_02: So like right now it'd be like Britney or Lady Gargo would be doing like a whole month of shows at a certain hotel.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: Can you imagine if I don't know they were doing this kind of show?
- 17:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: Because there's a point where they suggest like getting in like Janet Jackson, Paula Abdul.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: Madonna and Paula Abdul.
- 17:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like I was like, yeah, that'd be great.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: Because then you know they would sell it.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: Oh, that would sell so well.
- 17:35SPEAKER_02: That would sell so well, but at the same time, like, yeah, again, that whole like career navigation is is quite difficult.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: But yeah, so she sends she sends uh Nomi up to watch uh from the showroom, and and Nomi is just like blown away by what she sees, and besides, yeah, you don't you're doing the dance.
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, yeah, that's how I like um Mary O'Connell, who's another comedian.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: Our friendship was born out of this film.
- 18:02SPEAKER_02: Cause I think like like it just solidified over this film because I remember seeing her have like a showgirl's um like mascara or something.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: I was like, oh my god, like the movie, and she's like, exactly, and then we were both like I was like, Yeah, it was crazy.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: We're gonna get yeah, we've got the other movie.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: Is there a show?
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: Wait, there's like a specific branded show called Mistara or like a or like the colouring.
- 18:21SPEAKER_02: I think it was just like a coincidence, and then I think she bought it because of the name, and I was like, Oh, I like the movie, and then she was like, Oh my god, I love that film, but yeah.
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: Um I love it when I find out people like this film.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: So then, yes, so she sees uh Crystal, yeah, the head showgirl, Crystal V Connors, yeah.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: Crystal, say that again Crystal V Connors.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: Crystal V Connors, yeah.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I've seen it once, I'm not gonna pick up on everything.
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's fair.
- 18:52SPEAKER_02: That's fair.
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: I love her.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: She's I'm gonna recomp I'm gonna keep going back to you for like all the little bits.
- 18:58SPEAKER_02: I have so much useless showgirls trivia.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: It's insane.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: I could win a pub quiz, but nobody really do it.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: This is great, keep going with it.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: For sure.
- 19:08SPEAKER_02: Steel trap.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: What?
- 19:11SPEAKER_02: No, my brain is a steel trap.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: Oh I thought that was a reference to the film.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: No.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, so she goes down and seek uh with uh Molly to watch her uh to go and help out and everything, and Molly introduces Crystal to uh Nomi, and Nomi so Crystal is impressed by Nomi's nails.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: Oh, I love that.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: That's so funny.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: And oh, and then she calls and and then she says to Nomi about oh, you worked at the cheetah club.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: And that's when she get Nomi gets angry and you and you think, well, hang on, why is she getting so angry about this specific thing?
- 19:50SPEAKER_02: Why are you so touchy about this?
- 19:51SPEAKER_02: She strums off.
- 19:52SPEAKER_02: Nomi has this like volatile reaction all throughout the film.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: Every time.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: Every single time.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: And I think it's not clear for the longest time.
- 20:00SPEAKER_02: I know, and I don't know if that was like a direction from Verhoeven to be like, okay, do this reaction this way.
- 20:07SPEAKER_02: Or yeah, like it might have been like it's probably deliberate, but at the same time, maybe Elizabeth Werkley added her own sort of like rage to it.
- 20:13SPEAKER_02: It's it's it's funny, but at the same time, at first I thought it didn't work.
- 20:17SPEAKER_02: I was like, this is a weird reaction, and then the more I watched it, I was like, no, no, no, like there's no other way Nomi could have been done.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, honestly.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: I think she has to be played that way.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, she has to be a bit like oh girl, relax.
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, anyway, yeah, she storms off um after Crystal mentions the cheetah.
- 20:36SPEAKER_02: And then is this after that, do they go to the cheetah?
- 20:38SPEAKER_02: Is that it?
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: Is that they go is it c is it they go clubbing?
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: Is it at the cheetah?
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, they go clubbing.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, no, they go to a completely different club, and no meets are love interest that has like four lines.
- 20:50SPEAKER_02: Um they're all terrible dancers, by the way.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: Oh, they are so bad.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: That's what I was gonna say.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: And they're meant to be professionals, which they dance, and he says, Oh, you've got potential.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she's like and he's like, I can teach you how to dance, but he's not dancing well either.
- 21:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, no, no.
- 21:04SPEAKER_02: He's yeah, and it's so weird, but um, yeah, that scene happens, which is like one of those quite forgettable ones to me, anyway.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: Um, I I I I have like clear memory of it because it's like as well.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: I just thought, where did this fight come from?
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the fight came out of nowhere.
- 21:20SPEAKER_02: I was like suddenly, like, yeah, I think I think they really needed to like okay, no, this bitch aggressive, so let's let's put that out there.
- 21:27SPEAKER_02: Um, and I oh man, God bless Molly, because she she has such a handful, like throughout this.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: I don't get why they are friends.
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: There is nothing that connects them.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: It's I love yeah, it's the oh man, I think Melaney said that bit where like my favorite thing that's so funny is when you see like a completely calm, normal person be so patient with an insane person.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: That's exactly what Molly and Omi are to me sometimes.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, it's it's great.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: So then he he gets into a fight, she gets kicked out by the other bag.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she's the one that gets kicked out.
- 22:02SPEAKER_02: Stupid fucking man.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: And then she ends up in in jail and he bails her out for some reason.
- 22:07SPEAKER_02: Because they know each other, they have each other's details.
- 22:10SPEAKER_02: Um He bails her out, goes you.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: He bails her out, and then the next thing I've got written down is popping dress.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: So I'm guessing it leads to the next scene.
- 22:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, in the in the cheetah.
- 22:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: In the cheetah, yeah, with the with the lady.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: The woman with the dress that like pop yeah, her boobs pop out.
- 22:30unknown: Yeah.
- 22:30SPEAKER_02: She's great.
- 22:31SPEAKER_02: What is that?
- 22:32SPEAKER_02: So funny.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: She is great in it.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: She's yeah.
- 22:34SPEAKER_02: The mechanics the highlight every time.
- 22:36SPEAKER_02: The mechanics of that dress.
- 22:37SPEAKER_02: I wonder if it was like practical effects or like CG.
- 22:42SPEAKER_02: Oh, I hope it was CGI.
- 22:43SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, that'd be so funny.
- 22:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:44SPEAKER_02: It's like fuck you, Henry Gavel's mustache.
- 22:46SPEAKER_02: Here is like the predecessor.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: Um there's no way they could do that in '95.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: No.
- 22:53SPEAKER_02: Um it's so funny.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but she looks like I should like tomb boobs popping out in 95.
- 22:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: Total recall, like three boobs.
- 23:01SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's true.
- 23:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know.
- 23:02SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 23:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I could I could talk about boobs order.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: Wait, total recall's behoven, is what is it?
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay, they could do that.
- 23:09SPEAKER_02: They could do that.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: They could do that.
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: But and and he's done that film by this point, um, I think, right?
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think total recall's like 91 or something.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:18SPEAKER_02: And then in The Cheetah, it's the sleaziest place in the world.
- 23:22SPEAKER_02: The fucking owner.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: And cheetah reminds me, all I can think of with that is like hustlers turned up to an infinity.
- 23:32SPEAKER_02: Not even turned up.
- 23:34SPEAKER_02: It's like if you strip hustlers down and then add more like grease and grime into it, it's yeah, it's I love hustlers too.
- 23:45SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's disgusting.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: And that's when, uh, but that's when uh Penny comes along.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: Is it Penny?
- 23:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:52SPEAKER_02: Oh, sweet.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: And she's the she's gonna be the new dancer.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she's strange because it's on your it seemed it's weird introducing Penny there because already this is our first introduction to uh Nomi there.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: So it's just like, oh, we're seeing them both, but Nomi's already like established there, but she's also just moved there.
- 24:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:12SPEAKER_02: But like she's been there for six weeks, man.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: As as part of the title card.
- 24:18SPEAKER_02: Do we need to?
- 24:18SPEAKER_02: Is that efficient filmmaking?
- 24:21SPEAKER_02: If we really want to get into it.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:25SPEAKER_01: We don't need to see.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: But yeah.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 24:27SPEAKER_02: Uh and Nomi's like, I'm on my period.
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: Oh god, I just yeah.
- 24:33SPEAKER_02: Oh, I just remembered.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, I had my period yesterday.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm a period yesterday.
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: It lasted one day, apparently.
- 24:41SPEAKER_02: I wish.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: Um so uh then Crystal shows up uh with what's his name?
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: Zach.
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:49SPEAKER_00: And they watch her, they watch her dance.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:53SPEAKER_02: They watch her like a pole.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: Um I'd seen I'd seen that before.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: Everyone's seeing that.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: I'd seen that as a gif or something.
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: That's like the one everyone sees.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: All I could think was that's disgusting and so unsanitary.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: And right now.
- 25:14SPEAKER_02: In Rona times, no.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't want to be seeing that right now.
- 25:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you're not gonna get away with that.
- 25:19SPEAKER_02: Um misnomy, unfortunately.
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: But yeah, she she yeah dances.
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: They see her dance and then they want a private dance, right?
- 25:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: And he she offers, and then Crystal offers to buy Zach a private dance.
- 25:33SPEAKER_02: Oh, and she does her cocaine out of her little Lana Del Rey.
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: Oops, yeah.
- 25:38SPEAKER_02: Um her little Lana Delray, which is not a really good one.
- 25:41SPEAKER_02: I just remembered what happened today.
- 25:42SPEAKER_02: Ugh.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: Good timing.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: Oh god, yeah.
- 25:47SPEAKER_02: Topical, topical, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 25:48SPEAKER_02: Trying to stay sharp.
- 25:50SPEAKER_02: Um anyway.
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: Now I have to release this soon.
- 25:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, soon.
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: Uh anyway.
- 25:58SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, so she pays her$500 for this dance.
- 26:03SPEAKER_02: The big bucks.
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: Oh, and he gets they get their money's worth.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:08SPEAKER_02: He full arm nuts, like on my bro.
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: He nuts, but honestly, what she's doing to him, it's not a surprise because she is like fully grinding on him.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: She's grinding at the hardest you could grind.
- 26:26SPEAKER_02: But she's not even looking at him throughout most of it, which is the best part, because she's just looking at Crystal.
- 26:31SPEAKER_02: And it's the whole like surrogate thing of they want to fuck each other, but they can't, or they like there's like a whole power thing attached to it if they do.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: Um, but uh, this was such a that scene is also it's great, but it's also really funny.
- 26:45SPEAKER_02: It's hilarious.
- 26:46SPEAKER_02: I was laughing so it's hilarious because then you cut to know the other guy, um, yeah, the dance the dancer guy, and then he gets like he gets like yeah, he gets watched through the coat and he gets shooed away by the bouncer out of pay what's inside, and I was like, no.
- 27:03SPEAKER_02: It completely veers off, but then they obviously like call back to it later in the pool scene, and I was like, okay, yeah, I was gonna say, like the the the whole strip the whole strip like dance scene here, it's like she dances it on him in the same way that she fucks him later.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:21SPEAKER_02: I was like, okay, cinema, we get it.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: Parallels.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: It's like this is how you fuck.
- 27:27SPEAKER_02: This is not that's how she fucks.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: That's yeah, that's what I mean.
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: Not everyone not everyone, I don't think anyone can do that.
- 27:35SPEAKER_00: No, they would be breaking their backs the next constantly.
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: Constantly.
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it is not worth it.
- 27:41SPEAKER_02: Do not try this time, ladies and gentlemen and people.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: And uh I wrote down first of all, I wrote down her facial expressions are insane.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, crazy.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: During that so, like, like you mentioned, she is looking at Crystal during the whole the whole time.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: She's not even looking at Zack.
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: It's incredible.
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: But she is I don't know, do you think she's ever into Zack?
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: Or is it just a power thing?
- 28:04SPEAKER_02: I think at a point she might have been, when things were sort of like, oh, she's getting all this stuff, and and he's like the person that's there for her.
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: But at the same time, I also think that I think Zack was just a means for her to get one, get what she wants, and two get through to Crystal.
- 28:20SPEAKER_02: Because I think to me, deep down, like Shogirls is just like a retelling of all about Eve in.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's definitely a retelling of that.
- 28:27SPEAKER_02: For sure, like but with you know, monkeys and and yeah, glitter and oh we haven't even got to the monkeys.
- 28:33SPEAKER_02: Oh god, we haven't even got there yet.
- 28:35SPEAKER_02: Let's get to the monkey.
- 28:36SPEAKER_02: This film is really long, by the way.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, I have like pages more to go with I'm gonna like go a little bit faster with it.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: Okay, so I wrote I also wrote down uh this is so much more full on than I realised.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: That's what I wrote down at the time.
- 28:54SPEAKER_02: It's really not subtle at all.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: Like, there is no subtlety in this film whatsoever.
- 28:59SPEAKER_02: That shit's for the 2000s.
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: This is like I knew it was NC17.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: But I thought, oh, I I've seen like some other NC 17s.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: This is this is this early so much more.
- 29:11SPEAKER_02: Like it earns that rating.
- 29:13SPEAKER_02: And it got like a wide throat, like theatrical release, which is crazy.
- 29:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: Um but you know, do you know the the the studio agreed to it?
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: But he knew they knew he was making an NC17, which is crazy.
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: It's like you can't say no to this guy, you know?
- 29:27SPEAKER_02: Like, it's Paul Verhoven.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: Why wouldn't you give it to him?
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: I guess like in the lead up to that, he was having hits uh hit.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 29:35SPEAKER_02: And then once you get the flop, it's like, oh hang on.
- 29:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:37SPEAKER_00: Like.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: But he went from did he go from this to Starship Troopers?
- 29:41SPEAKER_02: No, Starship Troopers.
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he did, yeah.
- 29:43SPEAKER_02: Starship Troopers was 97, yeah, yeah.
- 29:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:45SPEAKER_02: And then he was like, oh, I'm redeemed.
- 29:48SPEAKER_00: So I'm back.
- 29:49SPEAKER_02: So come back, but more craziness.
- 29:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Denise Richards.
- 29:53SPEAKER_00: Um I think Denise Richards would have been great in that role.
- 29:58SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, as Nomi?
- 29:59SPEAKER_02: No, I don't think she could move the same way.
- 30:01SPEAKER_02: Because I think Elizabeth has like a dance background, I'm pretty sure.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: But I think Yeah, I read that uh Jenny McCarthy was originally good.
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: And then she couldn't dance.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: Crazy.
- 30:10SPEAKER_02: But I don't know.
- 30:11SPEAKER_02: I don't think Denise would have pulled it off.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: I think she wouldn't have been as full on, but maybe not the dancing.
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: Maybe she'd be like one of the other dancer girls, like the one that gets the one that falls the one that throws the pearl, so the other girls follow.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: That is that's a good role for her.
- 30:26SPEAKER_02: Great role.
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 30:28SPEAKER_00: Then she goes, Oh no, James goes to her house to teach her, she goes to the tr he goes to the trainer to teach her how to dance, supposedly.
- 30:37SPEAKER_01: And then they immediately say, because I studied in New York.
- 30:42SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 30:43SPEAKER_01: I lived in New York.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: Okay, Britta.
- 30:48SPEAKER_02: He really read at that.
- 30:50SPEAKER_02: He really did.
- 30:51SPEAKER_02: It's so funny because they immediately sort of like get which I think is like a dance movie trope, so you can't really avoid it.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: But they immediately get each other's choreography, and then when they kind of start getting really intimate, she's like, I'm on my period, like it comes back, and she's fully on her period.
- 31:09SPEAKER_02: I was like, bitch, come on.
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: I said this is an X-rated save the last dance at this point.
- 31:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, which I appreciate because like, yeah, periods are they need to be represented in cinema, I think.
- 31:23SPEAKER_02: Um happens.
- 31:25SPEAKER_02: Like, we don't know when in the Avengers films Black Widow is like, guys, I can't right now.
- 31:29SPEAKER_02: Like, just don't.
- 31:31SPEAKER_02: I need to learn.
- 31:32SPEAKER_02: I need to start.
- 31:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm not gonna headlock anybody with my legs because it's not right anyway.
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: Uh and then he says that she has too much talent to be wasting it on like under the script club, on the cheetah, yeah.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: He's right.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: Um then and then so she leaves and he goes to uh or he leaves or whatever, and then she goes out with Molly and buys the Versace dress.
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: Yes, Versailles, yes, yes, Versailles.
- 32:00SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, Versace.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: Just to if just to show that she's she is not wealthy.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: Oh, she doesn't know Versace.
- 32:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she's a because nobody knows Versace.
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, nobody knows Versace.
- 32:10SPEAKER_02: I got it at Versace.
- 32:12SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 32:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:13SPEAKER_02: Um recently, I was listening to um Oh hello the podcast, and then I think Nick Crowl's character pronounces Rosachi the same way.
- 32:20SPEAKER_02: And I I immediately lost it.
- 32:22SPEAKER_02: I was like, no, Versace! He's seen the movie!
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: Um of course I guarantee like they've seen all the bad movies.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: Oh, so that's when she gets a chance to audition it at Stardust Hotel.
- 32:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, for the what's the name of the show?
- 32:40SPEAKER_02: Goddess, yeah, right?
- 32:42SPEAKER_02: Goddess?
- 32:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think so.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: I don't have it written down.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: I think it's goddess.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: You should know this.
- 32:47SPEAKER_02: I do know this, but I haven't seen this in ages.
- 32:49SPEAKER_02: I saw this like two months ago.
- 32:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:52SPEAKER_02: Which is ages now, you know.
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's true.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: Two years ago, sorry.
- 32:57SPEAKER_02: Um, we'll continue.
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, they're Moss lines that Mr.
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: Moss, I can't remember his name.
- 33:05SPEAKER_00: Mr.
- 33:05SPEAKER_00: Moss.
- 33:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:06SPEAKER_02: Something like that.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: Whatever his name is.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: Was it the coach or the other guy?
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: The like the guy that's like training.
- 33:11SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:13SPEAKER_00: Like the the guy, the sleazy guy.
- 33:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:15SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 33:16SPEAKER_02: The entertainment guy, right?
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: He like lines them all up and starts and starts whistling them down based on the perkiness of their breasts.
- 33:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: The ice cube thing pisses me off so much, but I've gotten to a point where it makes me laugh.
- 33:31SPEAKER_02: Because how dumb.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he makes her, he wants her to put ice cubes on her nipples to harden them.
- 33:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:37SPEAKER_02: And she's just like, but then does it anyway.
- 33:40SPEAKER_02: Uh that's very funny.
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: Which is like the the that's her throughout the entire film.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: Ugh, I'll do it anyway.
- 33:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: No, that's that's it.
- 33:48SPEAKER_02: Like, hit the nail on the head, that's exactly what she does.
- 33:50SPEAKER_00: I am like disgusted by this, but I'm gonna do it.
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: No reason why.
- 33:54SPEAKER_02: It's that whole conversation of I think, does Naomi have enough agency on her own, or does she need to be provoked into taking action?
- 34:01SPEAKER_02: Which I think she explores later on the film.
- 34:04SPEAKER_02: So interesting.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: Uh then she runs into James again outside.
- 34:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:11SPEAKER_02: He's following.
- 34:12SPEAKER_00: He happens to be working there at the hotel.
- 34:15SPEAKER_02: The valet, apparently, allegedly.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: Um then instantly gets fired again.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: The the smack.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: Because of her.
- 34:23SPEAKER_00: Not because of her, but like around her.
- 34:24SPEAKER_01: Around her, yeah.
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: Because of himself again.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:28SPEAKER_02: Damn it, Jim.
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: Um and then he I wrote down why does he care at that point?
- 34:35SPEAKER_02: Because he wants to smash.
- 34:37SPEAKER_02: That's all I think, all the men in the film, like their prime motivation is to get with a woman, if not Nomi, like another woman.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: But he wants to get with Nomi so much that he's willing to lose two jobs and bail her out.
- 34:51SPEAKER_02: Hey.
- 34:51SPEAKER_02: And she has that talented, like, you know, she has talent that cannot be wasted.
- 34:57SPEAKER_02: So he's trying not to waste it.
- 34:59SPEAKER_00: Dance fuck.
- 34:59SPEAKER_02: He yeah, he's seen her dance fuck.
- 35:01SPEAKER_02: He has basically felt her period, I guess.
- 35:05SPEAKER_02: And they're they're united, they're like strong.
- 35:09SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't I don't get that relationship at all.
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: Um, it's one of those things where like if ugh, it's that pretentious thing of you do it in film school, where like, where can you trim this story?
- 35:20SPEAKER_02: And I was like, you can cut out get rid of him.
- 35:23SPEAKER_02: Uh get rid of fucking Kyle McLachlan.
- 35:27SPEAKER_02: I love Kyle McLachlan, but like get rid of the heck.
- 35:29SPEAKER_00: Get rid of Kyle McLachlan.
- 35:31SPEAKER_02: I think I just really want to see a crystal Nomi film, like a pure.
- 35:34SPEAKER_00: I would say a crystal nomi film, but he is great in this.
- 35:37SPEAKER_02: He's so hilarious.
- 35:38SPEAKER_02: His hair is creepy.
- 35:39SPEAKER_00: Oh, that hair.
- 35:40SPEAKER_02: But I love it.
- 35:41SPEAKER_02: He's so good.
- 35:42SPEAKER_00: I think it gets worse throughout the film.
- 35:44SPEAKER_02: It does, it really does, because he starts wearing turtlenecks that progressively get higher on his neck, and it just makes it.
- 35:49SPEAKER_02: Is that what it is?
- 35:50SPEAKER_02: I think so.
- 35:51SPEAKER_02: I that's my theory, at least.
- 35:53SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 35:53SPEAKER_00: It just looks like it flops down more and more.
- 35:55SPEAKER_02: It's it's ridiculous.
- 35:57SPEAKER_02: But it is a precursor to a lot of like early 2000s looks.
- 36:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, oh yeah.
- 36:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 36:02SPEAKER_02: The turtleneck is definitely a precursor.
- 36:04SPEAKER_02: A vibe.
- 36:05SPEAKER_02: A vibe.
- 36:07SPEAKER_00: So then so then she goes, uh she gets the job, she goes to tell James, and as at that moment he happens to be sleeping with Penny.
- 36:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, which is so stupid.
- 36:17SPEAKER_02: And then like teaches Penny the dance, which is the thing that she gets mad about the most.
- 36:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:23SPEAKER_02: And they're not even like official, they've never even slept together, I think.
- 36:26SPEAKER_02: Like Nomi and James.
- 36:27SPEAKER_00: He felt her up.
- 36:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he felt her up at home.
- 36:29SPEAKER_02: Um, but then what's really funny is that um, I don't know if you like know about this, but they did like an unofficial Showgirls um sequel and it starred Penny.
- 36:39SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 36:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's horrible.
- 36:41SPEAKER_02: Unofficial.
- 36:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, unofficial.
- 36:43SPEAKER_02: Like like Verhoven had nothing to do with it.
- 36:45SPEAKER_00: How long ago, how long later was this album?
- 36:47SPEAKER_02: Oh, I think it might have been like two, three years, maybe.
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 36:51SPEAKER_02: Not too long, not too long.
- 36:52SPEAKER_00: Like it's I'm just imagining like 20 years later.
- 36:55SPEAKER_02: 20 years later.
- 36:56SPEAKER_02: Penny is 42.
- 36:58SPEAKER_02: Um, and she's gonna say because because she has I'll I'm gonna spoil things later if I spoke about it, but yeah, no, she's yeah, no, it's but it's like I think I got through 15 minutes of it, and I was like, no, this is like bad, bad, not bad, good.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: Like it's just not enjoyable.
- 37:16SPEAKER_02: I was like, no, I hate this.
- 37:17SPEAKER_02: Get it away from me.
- 37:19SPEAKER_02: Anyway, yeah.
- 37:20SPEAKER_02: Penny, she's mad, she storms off again.
- 37:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:23SPEAKER_00: Um then I've got the says written down again, so I'm guessing that how happens.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:28SPEAKER_00: Uh she's and I wrote down she's very secretive about her family and her social uh security.
- 37:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she she doesn't so something's going on here.
- 37:37SPEAKER_02: Oh, something's it's a number.
- 37:40SPEAKER_02: She doesn't know what is it?
- 37:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she doesn't know her social security number.
- 37:44SPEAKER_02: And she doesn't have health insurance.
- 37:45SPEAKER_02: Um she does.
- 37:47SPEAKER_02: Anyway.
- 37:48SPEAKER_00: Then we get to the best bit.
- 37:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:51SPEAKER_00: Monkeys.
- 37:53unknown: Monkeys.
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: What are the monkeys doing in this show?
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: All they do is happening to eat garlic.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: And I think they're like trappies monkeys, because I don't think you see them walk around like on the show itself, but they are trappies.
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: You see them in that scene and that scene over there.
- 38:06SPEAKER_02: And that scene, that scene only, and it's one of those things where like, oh yeah, this is like a crazy show.
- 38:10SPEAKER_02: So they've gotta have a live animals.
- 38:12SPEAKER_02: This is Vegas.
- 38:13SPEAKER_02: Um, and it's so funny because the show I think is like it seems really long.
- 38:19SPEAKER_02: It seems like a really long show.
- 38:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's like a two-hour show, yeah.
- 38:22SPEAKER_02: Two-hour show, three-act structure, so many costume changes, so many set changes.
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: It goes from like golden volcano people to biker gang.
- 38:33SPEAKER_00: And I was like, yeah, there's a full-on explosion every night.
- 38:35SPEAKER_02: Yes! I was like, the pyrotechnics budget, holy shit.
- 38:39SPEAKER_02: And that's one of those things where like, oh, the production design on this whole film.
- 38:42SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 38:44SPEAKER_02: Like, they threw so many.
- 38:46SPEAKER_00: And then you have to also think like they half of the people probably getting those tickets to those shows are probably getting gifted them from the casino.
- 38:52SPEAKER_02: From the casino, yeah.
- 38:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, for me, not even paying to go see this.
- 38:56SPEAKER_00: It's ridiculous.
- 38:57SPEAKER_02: And it's one of those things where like, oh, in the universe, this is supposed to be like high art.
- 39:01SPEAKER_02: Well, not even high art, but like high value entertainment.
- 39:04SPEAKER_02: And I don't and nobody knows what the story is because that's not the focus of it.
- 39:08SPEAKER_00: Like, oh, I think it's supposed to be high art.
- 39:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, really.
- 39:11SPEAKER_02: I think there's supposed to be high art.
- 39:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think I I get I feel like there is supposed to be high art involved.
- 39:16SPEAKER_00: Because it's never that show is never frowned upon by anyone.
- 39:20unknown: Yeah.
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: I think that's supposed to be like top end of the of like Vegas shows.
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: That's what I got from that.
- 39:28SPEAKER_02: It's yeah, I mean, if you take it to Coachella now, well not now, but like when we're all free, I feel like it would be it would be a hit.
- 39:37SPEAKER_00: So she starts dancing on the stage in this show, and uh and she's not great.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: No, she's not, but she knows all the moves, suddenly.
- 39:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and they let her know that she's not great.
- 39:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she's like a bit wild and entertained, and as it's that whole like, oh, she's a bucking bronco, they all have to tame, but then she's also like you can't really change her.
- 40:01SPEAKER_02: But it's it's it's such an interesting character arc as well, where like you have this person who's so set in their ways, and they're being forced to change, or the city is forcing them to change, and then by the end of it, they sort of return to a happy medium where like actually I'm gonna pull out my knife and stick this guy up again.
- 40:19SPEAKER_02: Um which is which is so fascinating, I think.
- 40:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, if it's a crit if it's a critique or a satire at all of that sort of industry.
- 40:27SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah.
- 40:29SPEAKER_00: Uh then she she goes, she gets flowers from Zach, and that's where she's that's the point that's I think that's the one point where she actually likes it.
- 40:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she's like, oh my god, actually he's nice.
- 40:39SPEAKER_00: He's nice to me.
- 40:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he get he got me the job, he's nice to me.
- 40:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I should and then James is back, of course.
- 40:46SPEAKER_02: Of course, because he's jealous.
- 40:48SPEAKER_02: Um he has like a spidey sense of like somebody, some somebody's flirting with Nomi.
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: I gotta swoop in, even though I'm sleeping with many men.
- 40:58SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty sure, I'm pretty sure he would have been banned from that place after getting fired so badly.
- 41:04SPEAKER_02: For sure, for sure.
- 41:05SPEAKER_00: And oh my god to hang around out there again.
- 41:17SPEAKER_02: It's weird.
- 41:17SPEAKER_00: Uh but he says, I have a problem with pussy, which is a hilarious line.
- 41:22SPEAKER_02: It's a hilarious line, but honestly, who doesn't?
- 41:26SPEAKER_02: Just being real.
- 41:27SPEAKER_02: Anyway.
- 41:28SPEAKER_00: Sure, sure.
- 41:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 41:31SPEAKER_00: So she meets with Crystal, they go, uh Crystal's doing coke, and they go for a fancy meal outside in coke.
- 41:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 41:38SPEAKER_02: In the mall.
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: And she splashes her, she splashes her with champagne, which she calls holy water.
- 41:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:44SPEAKER_02: Um I think it's the best scene in the whole film, that whole like exchange.
- 41:51SPEAKER_00: Do you have more to say about that then?
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: Like what what what's so good about that scene?
- 41:54SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 41:55SPEAKER_02: It's that whole, it's really insane.
- 41:57SPEAKER_02: Because throughout the film, if you like really look at it, Naomi's always eating something.
- 42:01SPEAKER_02: But um That's true.
- 42:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she's always eating something, and then I think I like read a thing, or it might have been in the documentary where like, oh, it's supposed to show that she's like unrefined and she's like the down earth girl or whatever.
- 42:11SPEAKER_02: And then they have this dinner, and then they talk about sorry, this lunch, and then they talk about doggy chow and how much they hate brown rice and vegetables.
- 42:21SPEAKER_02: And it's that whole thing of actually they're a lot more like than either one of them even realize.
- 42:27SPEAKER_02: And it's that whole, oh yeah, it's definitely all about Eve in reverse.
- 42:30SPEAKER_02: And then there's this one insane, like 180 rule break that I like of at first I hated, and then I sort of watch it again, being like, Oh, he clevered, like, oh he's smart, he knows what he's doing.
- 42:43SPEAKER_02: Like it shifts like the angle, just Nomi and um Crystal, like essentially just change exchanged camera angles, and then it's that from that point on the yeah, the power shift between the two changes, and I was like, Yeah, bro, bro, this crazy man is a genius.
- 42:58SPEAKER_00: Like that is actually very clever.
- 43:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's so smart.
- 43:02SPEAKER_02: It's so smart, but it's one of those things where like again, like in film school, you thought that's a sin.
- 43:06SPEAKER_02: Like, don't do that, it's not gonna make sense.
- 43:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's only a sin if it doesn't reason it.
- 43:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 43:12SPEAKER_00: If there's no reason for it, clearly there's a reason for it there, which it's a shift of power.
- 43:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but then it's still like it looks a bit off because you're not used to it and the language changes, but uh the only the only way that the only way it would other be otherwise be done is like uh is crystal being shot from below, so she's above, and then and then it flips and then she's the one below.
- 43:30SPEAKER_02: That's the only other way to do it in a natural way, but like yeah, you can't really get away from a short reverse shot, but he sort of was like, fuck you, and go.
- 43:39SPEAKER_02: Um and it's hilarious because cause that scene also it's it's like the whole I think one of the ideologies of the film, it boils down to like uh Nomi refuses to be a like to be called a whore, even though like yeah, like and then they have that whole they have that whole spot of like everyone's a whore, darling.
- 43:58SPEAKER_02: And I was like, Yeah, like that's And then I think that might have been I was like actually that's kind of profound.
- 44:03SPEAKER_02: Um in the context of this film, which is not very profound at all, but um it's it's it's yeah, it's it was like a nice little like a part of the film where it sort of had heart.
- 44:15SPEAKER_02: And I was like, okay, I like this.
- 44:17SPEAKER_00: It's like it's I I do really like yeah, they're they're relate the whole relationship between them is fascinating.
- 44:22SPEAKER_02: It's fascinating and it's it's insane.
- 44:24SPEAKER_00: It's so in it's like that, those are the best moments when you're watching the two of them together.
- 44:28SPEAKER_00: For sure.
- 44:29SPEAKER_00: So I do get why you want a film which also they're so good.
- 44:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I feel I also feel like Crystal isn't in it enough.
- 44:38SPEAKER_02: No, she isn't, she isn't, because I think um, but I I also feel like if again, like if you trim parts of the film, it should just be like like the the antagonist usually has to be as strong as the protagonist, and then they do but then they do the whole reverse, and I was like, Oh, okay, Crystal is in it the right amount because Nomi also has these other facets and and storylines to explore.
- 44:59SPEAKER_02: She got a boyfriend that's not her boyfriend, she got getting somebody else's boyfriend, she got her best friend who's like the only good person, and she's going on a boat and dancing on a at a boat convention.
- 45:11SPEAKER_02: That I I was like, Yep.
- 45:14SPEAKER_00: That's the next scene.
- 45:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 45:16SPEAKER_02: I hate that scene.
- 45:17SPEAKER_00: That's oh, that is an awful, awful scene.
- 45:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 45:21SPEAKER_02: Uh but again, not the worst one.
- 45:24SPEAKER_02: Um, just to make that clear.
- 45:27SPEAKER_00: No, but here's where we here's where we learn about Zach.
- 45:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because she tells Zach and he threatens uh Phil, the guy.
- 45:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 45:34SPEAKER_00: Um, and then she leaves and she's like so impressed by it.
- 45:38SPEAKER_00: Zach gets on the phone again, and and uh and she he's like, Oh Phil, what are you like?
- 45:43SPEAKER_00: Basically, what are you doing?
- 45:45SPEAKER_02: I'm like, man, what are you doing?
- 45:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and he's like on the stage.
- 45:48SPEAKER_02: Come on.
- 45:48SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's awesome.
- 45:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, oh yeah, it's and that's when you're like, oh, Zach is not a good guy.
- 45:53SPEAKER_02: He's not a good dude.
- 45:54SPEAKER_02: He's a whole he's he's like, oh, you're just as sleazy as every other thing here.
- 46:00SPEAKER_02: Despite that's also another thing of like they dress up the stardust as this sort of higher class higher end part of Vegas, even though it is just as sleazy as the cheetah, arguably.
- 46:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's so much, there's still the same stuff going on.
- 46:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 46:14SPEAKER_02: And I was like, oh, again, they did it again with Marlovin and Joel Lesterhaas.
- 46:19SPEAKER_02: Um anyway.
- 46:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so then then there's the scene where the dance the that dancer sabotages the other dancer by throwing the uh the pearls on stage, and so the other dancer slips and like lands on her back and like hurts her knee.
- 46:34SPEAKER_02: Such a bad throw.
- 46:36SPEAKER_02: Oh, it was it was horrible.
- 46:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was yeah, that made you like shuddering.
- 46:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think also from that point on, that like lunch, everything in that film just goes batshit crazy.
- 46:47SPEAKER_02: Like, people start getting it.
- 46:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it really hypers, yeah, it really hypes it.
- 46:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 46:50SPEAKER_02: People start getting really hurt, and it's like yeah, and then Nomi sees that as like, oh I have an idea.
- 46:59SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, because Nomi's the only one that sees it.
- 47:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, but she keeps quiet.
- 47:03SPEAKER_00: That's it, and she she keeps quiet, which comes back later.
- 47:07SPEAKER_00: Oh, so um that's when Al shows up.
- 47:12SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 47:13SPEAKER_02: Al and the boob lady.
- 47:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and the boob lady.
- 47:16SPEAKER_00: And then he this is the weirdest line, and it made me laugh so much.
- 47:20SPEAKER_00: He says to her in the most sentimental way, it must be weird not having anybody come on you.
- 47:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's it's the best line delivery, I think, in the whole film.
- 47:30SPEAKER_02: And he says it like, you know, like like a like a coach in a coming of age film to like there.
- 47:35SPEAKER_02: It's like turns to her, isn't it?
- 47:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, like turns to her, caresses her face, being like, Isn't it weird that nobody comes on you?
- 47:42SPEAKER_02: It's it's great.
- 47:44SPEAKER_00: And then uh she goes for a ride with Zach and goes back to his place.
- 47:48SPEAKER_00: The infamous pussy.
- 47:49SPEAKER_00: Here's where it comes in.
- 47:51SPEAKER_02: Oh god, the worst pussy in history of ever.
- 47:56SPEAKER_02: So bad.
- 47:57SPEAKER_00: So I wrote that like the first thing I said CeeDee Paul, dolphins, McLoughlin butt.
- 48:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 48:03SPEAKER_02: McLoughlin butt, yeah.
- 48:04SPEAKER_02: I completely overlooked that because I was like, uh Elizabeth Berklee.
- 48:10SPEAKER_02: Um, but we see her naked most.
- 48:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but she's been naked the whole time.
- 48:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the whole time.
- 48:14SPEAKER_02: But I don't know, like, man, I'm McLaughlin.
- 48:16SPEAKER_02: But I think the thing about this scene that's so unappealing to me is that he's just somehow more disgusting.
- 48:24SPEAKER_00: Oh, he like pours champagne all over her in the pool.
- 48:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, which is it just does it seem gross anyway.
- 48:31SPEAKER_02: It's like every everybody watching any film now during the pandemic being like, that's gross, that's gross, that's gross.
- 48:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 48:36SPEAKER_02: Um but this scene, like, I wouldn't say it's misplaced or like not done well, but it is necessary, I do think, because you sort of get that payoff of oh, she was teasing him and now they're fucking.
- 48:51SPEAKER_02: Um but then it also feels so like out of place at the same time, just being like, is this you finally oh, or maybe it works because it might be that whole point where Nomi sort of conquers another part of Crystal's life before she sort of um starts that climb.
- 49:08SPEAKER_02: Um which I think is really like strange because also from that point shit gets really bad really fast.
- 49:15SPEAKER_02: Like really bad.
- 49:17SPEAKER_00: Um so he like uh it looks like she's having a seizure while she's having the sex.
- 49:22SPEAKER_00: It's just a essentially it's just a repeat of what we saw.
- 49:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, completely.
- 49:26SPEAKER_02: She looks like a fish, literally now.
- 49:27SPEAKER_02: But they're both naked this time.
- 49:29SPEAKER_02: They're both naked this time.
- 49:30SPEAKER_02: And they're in water.
- 49:31SPEAKER_02: Um the logistics of which I was like, you're not even you're fucking her belly button, bro.
- 49:36SPEAKER_00: Like you're not even Yeah, and her head is being fully slammed on the water just constantly.
- 49:40SPEAKER_02: Can she breathe?
- 49:41SPEAKER_02: Is she okay?
- 49:44SPEAKER_00: It's almost like she is a fish being like slapped in the water, like slapping it around.
- 49:48SPEAKER_02: It's like it's like when you take a fish out of water for the first time and then you throw it back, like it thrashes about, you throw it back in, it still thrashes about.
- 49:54SPEAKER_02: Um that's exactly what it is.
- 49:56SPEAKER_02: But yeah, it's it's one of those things where like I I get the function of this scene, but also like there's something about it that just doesn't it doesn't sit right with my spirit.
- 50:06SPEAKER_00: Is there something to it that like for Hovind is just like heightening it's just like make giving the most extreme version of a sex scene that he can.
- 50:15SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, oh I think so.
- 50:16SPEAKER_02: Cause yeah, that's like that's like such a I think that's also a really great movie in this film because everything is so extreme.
- 50:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 50:23SPEAKER_02: I think, yeah, but I also I don't know, it's that whole thing I think her also the same thing that you said, how Crystal isn't in it enough.
- 50:30SPEAKER_02: I don't think Zach is in it enough either, by that same token.
- 50:33SPEAKER_02: So I think maybe that just yeah, and then and then the next morning, the next morning is just dumb.
- 50:39SPEAKER_00: Oh, what's uh what's the next morning?
- 50:41SPEAKER_02: She just wakes up and leaves.
- 50:43SPEAKER_02: It's that whole thing of like who's going to be Crystal's understudy, right?
- 50:46SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 50:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 50:47SPEAKER_02: And then she finds out that it's not her.
- 50:50SPEAKER_00: It's not her, yeah.
- 50:51SPEAKER_00: And then she goes to Zach and complains, and then she ends up getting it.
- 50:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she ends, she does end up getting it, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 50:59SPEAKER_00: And then she goes to the cheetah club, I think.
- 51:02SPEAKER_00: Is it the cheetah club she goes to where she watches James get booed on stage?
- 51:06SPEAKER_02: That might be the club they went to the first time before the cheetah, like where they where they met.
- 51:10SPEAKER_02: So it's like yeah, yeah.
- 51:12SPEAKER_00: So this isn't the cheetah club.
- 51:13SPEAKER_00: It just seems like the cheetah club.
- 51:15SPEAKER_02: Because all the clubs look the same.
- 51:16SPEAKER_02: Um all the places, like that there's a similar sort of like dreariness and grossness about them.
- 51:22SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, like he has like three other dancers or something, and Penny as well.
- 51:27SPEAKER_02: And like chairs, and I was like, nah, yeah, like magic bank will be.
- 51:31SPEAKER_00: It's that song, it's that the fake prince song.
- 51:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the fake prince song.
- 51:37SPEAKER_02: That's what it's called.
- 51:38SPEAKER_02: It's the fake prince.
- 51:39SPEAKER_00: That's all I can think.
- 51:40SPEAKER_00: It's like this, you are trying to be Prince.
- 51:42SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 51:43SPEAKER_02: Prince would never be that tacky, though.
- 51:46SPEAKER_02: Like, if we're gonna be honest.
- 51:48SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 51:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:51SPEAKER_00: It turns out he is now engaged to Polly because she is pregnant.
- 51:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 51:57SPEAKER_00: That came out of nowhere, really quickly as well.
- 52:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 52:01SPEAKER_02: Really quickly.
- 52:02SPEAKER_02: Time doesn't pass the way you think it does.
- 52:04SPEAKER_00: No, there's no there's no structure for time except for that six weeks at the start.
- 52:07SPEAKER_00: There's no there's no clear indication of time.
- 52:09SPEAKER_02: It's like a Spongebob episode six weeks later.
- 52:14SPEAKER_02: Um, and then it's so funny because James's whole like argument or his archetype is like, I make high art, like my art is the right art, and then you watch it and he gets booed, and Naomi's like, actually, you can keep it.
- 52:29SPEAKER_00: You can keep it, and you've got my understudy essentially.
- 52:34SPEAKER_02: Exactly, exactly.
- 52:35SPEAKER_02: Um, which is really funny again, like that whole thing of like that's how the city will treat you, or like that's how that like will Vegas will eat you up.
- 52:44SPEAKER_02: Vegas will eat you up, spit you out, and get somebody pregnant.
- 52:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 52:48SPEAKER_02: Rule of three.
- 52:49SPEAKER_00: Um what else have I got here?
- 52:51SPEAKER_00: They they oh, then there's some dancing tension, and then suddenly Nomi shoves crystal down the stairs, and we get a repeat of what we saw earlier.
- 53:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the other girl sees it and says nothing.
- 53:03SPEAKER_00: The other girl sees yeah, and fractures her hip.
- 53:07SPEAKER_02: Which is so bad because from a fall of that height, like, why didn't she break her neck?
- 53:14SPEAKER_00: Wait, how far is it?
- 53:15SPEAKER_00: Because it doesn't only it looked like a couple of stairs.
- 53:17SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, no, it looks so good.
- 53:19SPEAKER_02: Because from what I remember from it, because I like that sort of from the dressing area to the stage, it's such a steep, like, slope.
- 53:28SPEAKER_02: It's a far from I was like, holy shit, she's that must have been where I like stopped it at that point and went to sleep.
- 53:34SPEAKER_02: Fair enough.
- 53:35SPEAKER_02: I remember watching it the first time being like, oh no, no, no, she did.
- 53:38SPEAKER_02: And then, oh wait, no, she's in the ambulance.
- 53:41SPEAKER_00: That might have been a more interesting turn to like actually kill her off.
- 53:44SPEAKER_02: But then it wouldn't be as fun because you don't get that scene at the end.
- 53:47SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 53:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I guess, yeah, I guess you do you do need that payoff at the end.
- 53:51SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 53:52SPEAKER_02: I think this this is like this whole film is about setup, payoff, setup, payoff, like in in the most.
- 54:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, completely, completely, completely.
- 54:02SPEAKER_00: It's that yeah, so Molly sees it.
- 54:05SPEAKER_00: Molly doesn't see it, but she knows.
- 54:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she knows.
- 54:08SPEAKER_02: And she's so mad.
- 54:11SPEAKER_00: She is mad.
- 54:12SPEAKER_02: But then Molly's punished.
- 54:15SPEAKER_00: But then Molly goes to meet Andrew because it turns uh at this party.
- 54:19SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 54:20SPEAKER_02: So they throw a party.
- 54:21SPEAKER_00: Andrew, this guy that she's uh this like singer I think he is.
- 54:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so he's apparently allegedly a famous singer.
- 54:27SPEAKER_02: Like they missed I think it was that scene where they buy the dress for the first time.
- 54:30SPEAKER_02: Um there's like post-oh my god, I love it.
- 54:33unknown: Oh my god.
- 54:34SPEAKER_02: And it's like a throwaway thing.
- 54:35SPEAKER_02: Like you're that's random.
- 54:37SPEAKER_00: I bet it's also like it's a throwaway thing, but it's also like she Molly fully screams the first time she sees him, and like, what is happening right now?
- 54:44SPEAKER_02: I was like, that, oh my god, I would react that way to Harry Stiles or something, but not this guy.
- 54:50SPEAKER_00: That guy does not look creepy, he looks so creepy the entire time.
- 54:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, fully creepy.
- 54:57SPEAKER_02: Oh, also, I think he sends crystal flowers or something, and and then earlier in the film, yeah.
- 55:03SPEAKER_02: And then and then uh Molly's like, oh my god, I love him, and then it comes back as the billboard thing, and then it comes back to him at the party, and then it takes a complete left turn, and you're like, I know I hate this movie!
- 55:15SPEAKER_00: No, do you know?
- 55:18SPEAKER_00: I looked him up, yeah, his other roles, one of them is called In Robocop, he's named Creep.
- 55:25SPEAKER_00: He's named Creep in Robocop.
- 55:26SPEAKER_02: So I think Verhoven has like a go-to creepy dude.
- 55:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 55:29SPEAKER_02: Uh great.
- 55:30SPEAKER_02: In the s in the like Verhoven cinematic universe, it's the same creep.
- 55:35SPEAKER_02: Or like the same lineage of creeps.
- 55:38SPEAKER_02: Um anyway.
- 55:40SPEAKER_00: So here's where it gets really bad.
- 55:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 55:41SPEAKER_00: And Doris takes Molly back to the uh back to his room with his two friends.
- 55:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, two bodyguards.
- 55:50SPEAKER_00: And they f yeah, are bodyguards and they fully beat and rape her.
- 55:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's extreme.
- 55:57SPEAKER_00: It is so awful.
- 55:59SPEAKER_02: It's awful, and it's full on.
- 56:00SPEAKER_02: It's one of those things where like, oh, I really don't think this is necessary at all.
- 56:05SPEAKER_02: And like they could have either like oh man, so many things could have happened to Molly that's not to that degree, but could have been just as like damaging to Nomi, you know?
- 56:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but this is so horrible and so Yeah, it's like, why are you damaging Molly to for the sake of Nomi?
- 56:24SPEAKER_00: Like that to that extent.
- 56:25SPEAKER_02: Exactly, to the sake for the sake of her progression.
- 56:28SPEAKER_02: Um but like it's that whole thing of um we didn't have to see this happen to her.
- 56:34SPEAKER_02: Like we didn't have to see it.
- 56:35SPEAKER_02: No, like one, it shouldn't have been a choice.
- 56:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like Yeah, you see him beating on her, like yeah, oh, it's horrible.
- 56:42SPEAKER_02: And then you see her sort of come out of it, and then obviously Nomi swoops out in the room.
- 56:48SPEAKER_00: I like the question is like why also like why would he just like let her walk out after that?
- 56:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, knowing like the whole party is gonna see the fact that he's done that to her.
- 56:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but then they're gonna know, but but at that same time, like, yeah, they're gonna know, but it's that whole thing of they're not gonna say anything.
- 57:05SPEAKER_02: The same way, like, all that stuff has happened at the start of us, you know?
- 57:09SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, I guess that's true.
- 57:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I hate that it's like, oh this is also commentary.
- 57:14SPEAKER_02: Um, please note that I'm doing air quotes.
- 57:17SPEAKER_02: Um, but it's also just really shitty.
- 57:20SPEAKER_02: Like, it's it's one of those things you're like, this was necessary.
- 57:23SPEAKER_00: It's the one thing I really didn't like in the film.
- 57:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I despise it.
- 57:26SPEAKER_02: It's the one thing I can never defend.
- 57:28SPEAKER_02: Like I will never, like, obviously, like no sane person with.
- 57:31SPEAKER_02: But like, and it's the whole thing of Molly may as well be the only like woman of colour of any sort of uh like up with a larger role in the film.
- 57:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and she definitely is yeah, and she's the one that gets the fucking short end of the stick, and all four know me to sort of be redeemed in the eyes of the audience, which is also really shitty.
- 57:56SPEAKER_02: But uh, yeah, so this happens to Molly, it's horrible.
- 57:59SPEAKER_02: Uh puts her in the hospital, puts her in the hospital, which is uh maybe it was why it happened, because they needed to do the scene in a hospital.
- 58:08SPEAKER_02: That's a good point.
- 58:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's really stupid.
- 58:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because this is like that's when they go to the hospital, they like she's really sweet and checks on Molly, and then Zach's there, and then Zach threatens Nomi and says like, oh, you were a hooker, I found out all about your life.
- 58:22SPEAKER_02: Polly Ann Costello, that's her real name.
- 58:25SPEAKER_00: God damn it.
- 58:27SPEAKER_00: I know it was Polly something.
- 58:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's Polly something.
- 58:31SPEAKER_00: Uh she spits in his face full on.
- 58:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, full on like a lot of spit.
- 58:36SPEAKER_02: A little spit like she is a kid on a playground doing the equivalent of a hate crime to other children.
- 58:45SPEAKER_02: That was a really bad thing.
- 58:46SPEAKER_02: Anyway.
- 58:47SPEAKER_00: So then she goes to Andrews.
- 58:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she goes and destroys him, beats the shit out of him, and also in that scene, right, her nipples look really weird.
- 58:57SPEAKER_00: I thought she could like cover them in lipstick.
- 58:58SPEAKER_00: That's what I got from that.
- 59:00SPEAKER_02: No.
- 59:01SPEAKER_02: Maybe, but I've always thought like she covered it with some sort of like sedative or poison.
- 59:05SPEAKER_00: I thought that initially, but then nothing happened because of that.
- 59:08SPEAKER_00: And then although, but then she does say he wants to sleep, but then she kicks his ass very brutally as well.
- 59:17SPEAKER_02: And then it's that whole thing of okay, girl power, no, this isn't how we do it.
- 59:21SPEAKER_02: Like, okay, I'm really glad that he got his ass beat, but it's again, it's so difficult and it's so horrible.
- 59:30SPEAKER_00: Like then she goes to tell she goes and tell with Molly.
- 59:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean like I'll be happy.
- 59:34SPEAKER_00: Molly's like not aware of anything that's going on.
- 59:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I don't think like I don't know if Molly cares about Nomi in that way anymore after that.
- 59:42SPEAKER_00: No, I think that's it.
- 59:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think like that's it, right?
- 59:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 59:44SPEAKER_00: I think that's like that's her saying goodbye to her, essentially.
- 59:47SPEAKER_00: Like I've I've made it up to you here.
- 59:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, hopefully.
- 59:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and then uh or that's what Nomi thinks is making it up to her.
- 59:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 59:55SPEAKER_02: Like I don't think she can ever make it up to her, you know.
- 59:57SPEAKER_00: No.
- 59:58SPEAKER_00: Uh then she then she goes and visits Crystal in the same hospital.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_02: Same hospital.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_00: Conveniently.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_00: It's only one Vegas hospital.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_02: Only one Vegas hospital for the Stardust employees, I think.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_02: It's the only one that can take their health insurance.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_02: Plot holes covered.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_00: Good point.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_00: And then they kiss.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_02: Yes, I was like, I've been waiting for this for two hours.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_02: Um because like the attention is built so well.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_00: They build it up, and like it's so it's so perfect for that.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_02: It's perfect, it's like a perfect payoff.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_02: It's that whole like you see the role reversal again just being like, but then at the same time, Crystal is also sort of proud of her.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_02: Because she she also I think sort of admits like I probably did it.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she did it as well to get where she was.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_02: Um, but then I think Nomi like realizes that that's where they differ, is that she she will leave it all behind before somebody can do it to her.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_00: Like it's yeah, and so she does.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_02: She goes, back to where she came.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I love that outfit.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_02: And turns out the blue the I love that outfit of like her cowboy hat from Krista and the like the the leopard, no, tiger, it's like a blue, it's like shiny.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_02: It's it's great.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_02: And then she hits it.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_00: She hicks heights, and the guy from the beginning picks her up again conveniently.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_02: And she's like, Where's my shit?
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she wants her suitcase back.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_02: She pulls her knife out.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_02: And then it ends.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_00: She pulls a knife out on him, they swerve, yeah, just like the beginning, and then it ends.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_02: And then it ends, and I think one of the best ending shots, um, it's the billboard of her, and it's just Nomi Malone's goddess.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_02: And I was like, Oh, yeah, that's that's perfect.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_02: I was like, well done.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_02: And then I had to go through all of that just to get here.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_02: Um great.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's it's yeah, so that was I really, really enjoyed it.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's I had a great time watching it.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I had I'd watched another film for this uh uh yesterday prior to this, and I was having so much more fun watching this one.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_02: That's that's great.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_02: I'm very glad to hear that at least you enjoyed Shadows despite its shittiness.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_00: Um Yeah, I was like, because because I'm aware, I think because I went in aware it was satire, yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_00: And aware that most of them were in on it.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_00: Oh god, you were gonna say I was gonna say something.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_02: Um it's really interesting.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_02: Like I I'm glad that you read it as satire, but I think when it came out, nobody got it.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_02: Nobody got it.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_02: Like it's either obviously like it's in the doc like the You Don't Know Me documentary where they posit that like the film is either a masterpiece, a piece of shit, or a masterpiece of shit, which I think is like the most accurate camp, being like, oh yeah, it's horrible, but it's also like actually pretty clever.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_02: And I think when you do read it as a satire, it gets either like a little bit darker, but also makes a lot more sense.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_02: Um but uh regardless, it's hilarious.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_00: I think I just because I knew Behoven's other work, I knew that satire as well.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_00: I I know like what he what he does.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_00: That's his thing.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_02: That's his thing as well.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like RoboCub is a satire on uh brutality and violence, and then like yeah.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_02: Starship troopers is just like a huge fuck you to fascism.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_02: And I'm really excited for his new one.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_02: But yeah What's his new one?
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_02: It's called Bendetta.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_02: It's I think he's doing it in he might either it's either English, French, Dutch, or like might just be in like a European language.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_02: Um, but it's about a it's about a gay nun, and I was like, yeah, I mean I was like, you you don't have to sell me anymore.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_02: Like you had me a nun.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_02: Like I've seen sound of music.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_00: You like you you got you got oh I imagine if it's a satire of sound of music.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_02: Oh, that would be so good um and so creepy.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_00: Having him do a musical would be amazing.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_02: I think that might be my dream, and I think Showgirls, I think Showgirls was a soundtrack away from being a musical.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's very close to being a musical.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_02: If they cast people that could sing, that's it.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_02: And there is a Showgirls the musical.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_02: Um there's like a stage here.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I've heard about that.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_02: It's really good.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_02: I've seen bootlegs of it.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_02: That must be wild.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_00: It's really good.
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_00: You've seen it.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_02: I've seen bootlegs of it.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_02: Anyway.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_00: So I'm gonna read some bad reviews now before we get to like fuck yeah.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_00: Some uh let's do it.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_00: So Gene Siskel, he said he gave it two out of four and he said, Is it sexy?
- 1:04:25SPEAKER_00: Not when you're laughing.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_00: And then someone called Rich Rick Gut Grow and said the script is a generic bland mixing the soap of All About Eve with the sides of Valley of the Dolls.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's exactly.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_00: It's replete with the clunkiest dialogue, the side this side of Peyton Place, whatever that means.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_02: Is Peyton Place like a safe opera?
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_02: I think we're far too young to get that reference.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_02: But I do agree.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_00: I think we're young, too.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_00: I think we're too young and also like not American.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, not American.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_02: But also I do agree, like Valley of the Dolls meets all about youth.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_02: And I was like, yeah, no, that's right up my alley.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_00: Uh and then Roger Ebert said it's a waste of a perfectly good NC17 rating.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_00: Oh, thank you.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_00: Which disappointing of me?
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_00: I was like, wait, what do you mean it's a waste of an NC17 rating?
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_00: Because it it uses it.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_02: It uses it, but I think it's a waste of like a wide release NC17.
- 1:05:19SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_02: Like I think that was that was also like the biggest thing that I think people take on when they hear about this film and all of the shit on it, is that when it came out, it did not do well, despite all its like um yeah, yeah, all its like edginess and stuff.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_02: And Verhoven was so gracious to accept his own Razzie for the film.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's great.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_02: He was the first person to do that, wasn't he?
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_02: So fucking Balo.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_02: Oh, I'm obsessed with him.
- 1:05:47unknown: He's great.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_00: So now I want you to uh yeah, explain what you like so much about it that it makes it a good movie.
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_00: Oh man, I think I've I pretty much spilled out.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I talked about a lot of it.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_02: So I think to me, which I don't I don't know if I brought it up, but this film resonates with so many people in sort of a similar way in that it's so camp and insane and balls to the wall, but there's still like a tiny bit of heart in it that that w that gets you.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_02: Like um it's it's right up that alley of like uh mommy dearist and Valley of the Dolls and all these sort of cult classics, and I think it earns that title being like it didn't have its audience then, but now it does.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_02: Like now it does have its own audience, and I think that's what I love about it the most.
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_02: And it it's it's just it's so crazy and it's so pretty, and I like it.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_02: No, it's it's it's just yeah, it's fascinating as well.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_02: Like it's it's there's endless layers to peel back about it, despite being sold as such a facetious surface level film.
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_02: So that's my defense.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_00: Amazing.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_00: I rest my case.
- 1:07:00SPEAKER_00: I completely agree.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_00: That's yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_00: I really enjoyed it, and I didn't expect to enjoy it either.
- 1:07:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's that's a great surprise, I think, for a lot of people when they say it.
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_00: But I I love I think I love those camp kind of films.
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_00: I think they're so fun.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_00: So I yeah.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_00: I think I should have expected to enjoy it as well.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_01: It's great.
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_00: Um, is there anything you can tell us about it that we don't that we haven't covered?
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_02: Oh, oh man, let me like scroll through the Rolodex, Jesus.
- 1:07:31SPEAKER_02: There's so much shit.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_02: Um there's like a lot of use of mirrors in it, um, which is like a common theme in a lot of Rehovan stuff.
- 1:07:40SPEAKER_02: But um in it's so literal here, and you sort of like see no it's that whole like Nomi and Crystal Exchange thing, and you see them throughout in each other's like because they are each other's reflections, essentially.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_02: And I thought like, dude, you're so clever.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_02: Like, come on, man.
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_02: Uh what else?
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_02: Um, we didn't talk about how Nomi threw up her food in the beginning of the film.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_02: She like fully blows chunks into the road.
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_02: Um insane.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_02: I don't know why she did that.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_02: I don't think we ever will know why she did that.
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_02: But yeah, what else?
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_02: There's yeah, no, I'd like I don't know.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_02: I think I'd I'd spewed out all everything I could know about this film.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_00: Just let know me.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_02: We don't know me yet, but uh like yeah, when that documentary drops, please check it out.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_02: Oh, I'm definitely gonna watch that.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_02: So good, and it's so well done, and it's it's not even like they do have like talking head interviews and stuff, but the way they incorporate archive footage with Verhoeven's own filmography is just Do they talk to Verhoven and Elizabeth Berkeley?
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_02: They do not talk to Verhoeven, they do not talk to Berkeley directly.
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_02: I think they use archive footage of her as like the most recent footage of her talking about showgirls in like 2015, which is its 25th anniversary.
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_02: This is also a thing I'd bring up.
- 1:08:55SPEAKER_02: They did like a 25th anniversary screening in Los Angeles, and 4,000 people came out.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_02: Whoa! Yeah, and Elizabeth Berkeley introduced the film and they all gave her like the biggest standing overship.
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_02: And I was like, Yeah, she's finally got like the price she deserves for this role.
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_02: And it's just like a huge again, it's like a huge full circle thing, which is a really weird like goes back to the whole film being a full circle.
- 1:09:17SPEAKER_02: So, yeah.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_00: That's great.
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_00: That's great.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_00: Uh okay, so let's move on to the final segment, which is I want to know a good movie, a movie that's considered great, that you think is bad.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_00: Spill what you think is bad.
- 1:09:35SPEAKER_00: Spill the tea.
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_02: This is my own personal preference because I am a person.
- 1:09:40SPEAKER_02: It's all personal preference.
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_02: No, like a lot of people like this film, and I get so much shit for it online already, and I get so much shit for it from like my family and my friends.
- 1:09:47SPEAKER_02: I really don't like the before trilogy.
- 1:09:49SPEAKER_02: Like, I really don't.
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_02: I don't, it's not for me.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_02: Like, I that breaks my heart.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know.
- 1:09:55SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 1:09:55SPEAKER_02: Lots of people that went to film school love this film.
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_02: I think uh there's something about mumble.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_00: And the fact that you said the trilogy as well.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_00: You didn't say pick one.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_00: No, no, no, I didn't pick one.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_00: It's the whole thing.
- 1:10:06SPEAKER_02: I think I can sit through before sunset where I was like, oh, I see, I see your value now.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_02: Um, but then the other two, I'm like, no, no, this is like don't don't give me the it's it's that uh I think when it comes to films about relationships and when most when we all they do is talk, I think they're to me there's not maybe it's because I'm heartless and cold that I don't really connect with them.
- 1:10:32SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, you know, um, but at the same time, at some points I'm like, yo, I'm so bored.
- 1:10:37SPEAKER_02: Like, stop this, stop this trade.
- 1:10:39SPEAKER_02: There are too much.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_02: I can see people being bored with it.
- 1:10:41SPEAKER_02: It's boring.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_02: I don't like it.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_00: I can see people being bored with those.
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's it's because it literally, it's just them having conversations.
- 1:10:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:10:47SPEAKER_00: The entire three films.
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_00: It's that whole I love that.
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_00: I love that so much.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_00: I like getting in people's brains, and I like realistic dialogue.
- 1:10:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and Link Later is really great for that.
- 1:10:56SPEAKER_02: And which is why I think I like his other like I really like Waking Life.
- 1:10:59SPEAKER_02: Let not a lot of people.
- 1:11:00SPEAKER_02: I don't like waking life.
- 1:11:01SPEAKER_02: Exactly, not a lot of people do.
- 1:11:02SPEAKER_02: But it's that whole thing of like you can have randomized conversations that have like an inkling of purpose, and then it all comes together being like, Oh, okay, I get what you were trying to do because it was like a whole bigger thing.
- 1:11:12SPEAKER_02: But then with like the before trilogy, I'm kind of just like, no, I am exhausted.
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_02: Please stop.
- 1:11:19SPEAKER_02: Too many, too, too many straightway people.
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_02: Like, I can't.
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, no, that's that's my choice.
- 1:11:25SPEAKER_02: That's like my go-to.
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't like this, but sorry.
- 1:11:28SPEAKER_00: That's a that's a good choice to have though, because that that's a very strong choice.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_02: I was like, I like showgirls.
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_00: Like, I like showgirls, I hate the before trip.
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this is cool.
- 1:11:39SPEAKER_00: Forget the Oscar winning the Oscar winning screenplays.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_00: I want showgirls.
- 1:11:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like I don't like I don't like boyhood.
- 1:11:47SPEAKER_02: Like a lot of people like boyhood, I hate boyhood.
- 1:11:50SPEAKER_00: I I like the I appreciate the technique more than the film.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_02: Dedication.
- 1:11:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I wouldn't say technique.
- 1:11:57SPEAKER_02: I feel like they're sort of coming back to people in real time.
- 1:11:59SPEAKER_02: I was like, yeah, okay, that's the hustle.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I guess it's not really technique, is it's just like keeping it.
- 1:12:04SPEAKER_02: Oh man, there's a lot of films like that.
- 1:12:05SPEAKER_02: There's a lot of films like that, and definitely there are a lot of films that I love that other people are like, you're insane, this is a terrible film, or you're insane, that's bad.
- 1:12:12SPEAKER_02: Like, I really like fucking I really like Assaults on Precinct 13.
- 1:12:18SPEAKER_02: And I know which version the like the older one.
- 1:12:22unknown: Okay.
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_00: I don't think we've seen the older one.
- 1:12:24SPEAKER_02: It's I really like that one.
- 1:12:25SPEAKER_02: Um, but then a lot of people are like, You sure?
- 1:12:27SPEAKER_02: Or like it's shit.
- 1:12:28SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm looking around at the poster in my room being like, I liked Under the Silver Lake, and a lot of people would give me shit for it, and that's okay.
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_00: Haven't seen it.
- 1:12:35SPEAKER_02: Oh, dude, dude.
- 1:12:37SPEAKER_02: That's that's like Hollywood Entertainment as and Titties galore.
- 1:12:42SPEAKER_00: Like Is that how I should follow up Showgirls?
- 1:12:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's actually a really great double bill.
- 1:12:47SPEAKER_02: To me, anyway.
- 1:12:48SPEAKER_02: Like it's either it's either Showgirls and Hustlers or Showgirls and Under the Silver Thing.
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_02: It makes sense to me in my head.
- 1:12:55SPEAKER_02: But yeah.
- 1:12:57SPEAKER_00: Cool.
- 1:12:58SPEAKER_00: Okay, this has been great.
- 1:12:59SPEAKER_00: So you got any plugs that that you want to show out?
- 1:13:02SPEAKER_02: Um I directed a video uh a month ago.
- 1:13:05SPEAKER_02: It's out now, it's on Vice and Denisha's channel.
- 1:13:08SPEAKER_02: Um it's called Bag Check, very fitting with what we were talking about.
- 1:13:13SPEAKER_02: It's about periods and shit.
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_02: It is an Indonesian, but there are subtitles.
- 1:13:17SPEAKER_02: Um it was really fun.
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_02: It was my first time directing anything.
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_02: So yeah, if you can and for Vice.
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and for Vice is crazy.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_02: It's dumb lucky, I think.
- 1:13:27SPEAKER_02: No, it it's yeah, it's out, and I'm really proud of it.
