- 1:45in Yellow and it was originally written for Raymond Chandler's character of Steve Gasey,

- 3:22Pepsident with a toothpaste they were using at home. They preferred New Pepsidant by
- 3:27an overwhelming average of three to one over any other brand they tribe. These

- 4:09midnight it was like any other city. After midnight. Night moves in and
- 4:13the city becomes hushed and stealthy. The nightclubs close up one by one,
- 4:18but now and then the police whistle and the prowl car sirens serenade the sleeper.
- 4:28If you've got any coppin at all, you get on edge and you
- 4:30have to get dressed and go out and walk it off to relax. I
- 4:35was relaxing past the swank Carleton Hotel and the Sunset Strip about one am,
- 4:41when all of a sudden, recess was over her MM got you, ma.
- 4:48It was George Millar, the quiet spoken night clerk of the Carlton,
- 4:53hailing me from the doorway, probably to mucia Melachrino. No, it was
- 4:58wrong. Look Marlo, you're very busy right now. Why I'm alarm if
- 5:04I may be? As Cage's all that, we've got some trouble on me,
- 5:09whereas Curly you're a fearless house deck. Tonight he has to have a
- 5:13hangle. What's the beef on floor? A King lear party? Do you
- 5:16know him? Kingle a party? Oh that's the sweetest trumpet the side of
- 5:19Gabriel? Is he tanding here tonight? He's in the corridor on the eighth
- 5:24floor, dressed in yellow pajamas and his trumpet. There's a girl with him
- 5:28and they put him on a jam session. I suppose the King rejects my
- 5:30diplomatic notes. Well, get rough, but only if you have to any
- 5:36thanks. The guy was such an ear for music. Got to listen to
- 5:40reason. I'll be down five minutes. And so hey, King, hey,
- 6:01King, that's all boy? Oh stop mellow mellow King and yellow mosh
- 6:06malzin no more more? All right, King, the party is over?
- 6:11Hey were you addressing me? Peasant? I said, wrap it up?
- 6:15Can it put it on ice? The show is over? Ha conm King
- 6:18King kongk that's what he is king, konk let him have it? King?
- 6:23Then fed to a noseyhow stick as follows? All right, now look
- 6:28yellow pants, wrap up your bugle and buzz off. Now hit the grit.
- 6:31Oh, it's er than a forty cent steak, don't you. Let's'll
- 6:35make it soft and tender. Here, get him, boy can get him
- 6:40a cat for me. Hit me with that trumpet, will you? Ok?
- 6:43King? Come on, get up, get dressed and get out.
- 6:47How can he's out cold? I'll be glad to pack for him and you
- 6:51get back to your room. Listen, cop right, I don't have to
- 6:53do it any going, sister, Come on jump The door at a room
- 7:02eight fifteen was a jar. I went in and began tossing a lot of
- 7:05that yellow silk that the king liked so well into his suitcases. Something at
- 7:11this small desk stopped me. Tucked under the corner of the desk blotter was
- 7:15a note. It was assembled from words and letters cut out of newspapers and
- 7:19pasted on a telegraph blank. It said ten grand by Thursday night, Leo
- 7:26party or else her brother. I slipped the note in my pocket and went
- 7:32out in the corridor. Just as the King staggered past me into his room.
- 7:36I could get an infection from the dirty look he gave me as he
- 7:40slammed the door after him. The door two sweets away opened a crack and
- 7:46then shut again very quickly, and went over and knocked bad and copper.
- 7:51I want to talk to you. I want to hear from you. Okay,
- 7:55here I come, sister, ready or not? Help blow you down?
- 7:58So help me. I'll let you have it. Lay that pistol down,
- 8:01babe. Come on, come on? Will you pick up what you
- 8:03didn't count? And what would the little girl be doing with a twenty five
- 8:07automatic? I wonder a girl needs protection with insects like you around. Look
- 8:11what's your name? Little bulpie? Okay? But what does little boy blue
- 8:16with a horn mean to you? I admire his work? Do you know?
- 8:18King Leopolo? What are you doing in a place like this? I
- 8:20can tell you can't afford it. What's your angle? I want to soap
- 8:22contest? All right? Baby? You want it that way? What are
- 8:26you gonna do? I'm gonna make a phone call. We caught your michel.
- 8:33Hello, desk malar is Marlowe. I'm calling for the lady in room
- 8:39eight eleven. She's checking out. I had a little trouble up there.
- 8:50Mallow, Your two noisy guests will be checking out any minute. Okay,
- 8:54Well, I hate for things to happen on my shift. Well, the
- 8:58king bopped me with his bugle and the girl had a gun. Nice people,
- 9:01How come you put a floozie like that girl so close to the king?
- 9:05Well, I didn't another thing. Look, there was a receipt for
- 9:09rent to miss Maryland DeLorme on the telephone table in her room. Well,
- 9:13that wasn't the name. She gave Quilla apartment to eleven Ridgeland Apartments, Cord
- 9:18Street, La. She lives right in town and a cheap neighborhood, but
- 9:20she checks in here at a price you can't afford and gives a phony name.
- 9:24Now why why Cord Street, where Maryland Alarmee lived was old Town,
- 9:41party Town, Crooktown. It was afternoon when I got off the cogwheel car
- 9:46that climbs the steep hill to where the Ridgeland apartment sat on the top of
- 9:50Bunker Hill and went up dim, dusty stairs to apartment to eleven, and
- 9:56I tapped on the door. There was no answer, so I tried the
- 10:00door it was unlocked. The room inside was dim with stagnant gloom. Marilyn
- 10:09Delome was in. I didn't talk to her, though, I didn't think
- 10:13she'd want to make much conversation with those blue bruises about her throat where she
- 10:18had been strangled. I got out of there fast, whipping off door knobs
- 10:24like Ray he polishing apples for his boss. I found King lea party at
- 10:37his job at the club Belvedere. He was relaxing at a table in the
- 10:41bar with a kind of a girl commonly referred to as a knockout. She
- 10:46looked tall, and her hair was the color of a brushfire seen through clouds
- 10:50of dust. I pulled in my chin and then walked over to the table.
- 10:58Hell, Holy are you my stew You remember me? I'm sorry,
- 11:01I can't say that. Why you dirty keyhole snooper? Please don't start anything
- 11:07again. Left a certain little note in your hotel room last That wasn't all
- 11:13that dame with you. It changed it down. He didn't take this with
- 11:16you. There's not much snap in that punch. King, would you like
- 11:22to try it again? I have had some drinks. I'll see you later
- 11:26when I'm okay. See you later to the lorus after the floor show.
- 11:33I'm I'm sorry, miss you made as conspicuous enough as it is. Wait
- 11:37a minute, thanks, That's what I get for being a little gentleman,
- 11:46letting him pepper me without a comeback. Oh, he's always spoiling for a
- 11:50fight. I just can't control these dukes. Can't you better have a drink?
- 11:56All right? Cook with bitters. That's what I love about Hollywood.
- 12:01You meet so many eccentrics. Yeah, but you see, I'm the kind
- 12:05of a guy who starts with a short beer and wakes up in Shanghai with
- 12:07a full beard? Is this on me? Or is it on you?
- 12:15Well? That depends. Well, how champagne Mom's cordon rouge? Shall we
- 12:20say him? It's on you, it's on me? Coke with bitters.
- 12:26How did you get to know King Leo Party? Oh? I just happened
- 12:28to throw him out of his hotel last night. Oh how's detective? Huh?
- 12:33No? No filling Philip Marlow, private investigators, the general tag?
- 12:37How did you happen to get to know the King? I one sang in
- 12:41his band, but not for long. Well then look tell me. Would
- 12:46it be hard for a woman to get to him only if he was surrounded
- 12:50by a wall of fire, if the woman had a gun. Why I
- 12:54found this threat note on his desk last night. It asked for ten thousand
- 12:58dollars or else and is signed her brother. Well, well, yes,
- 13:05a woman with a gun could get to him and everybody would give her a
- 13:09great big hand. Mm hmm. Well I'll skip that coc and bitters and
- 13:15say good day and thank you. Crista Belle. The name is Dolores.
- 13:18Oh good afternoon, Miss scurry Kiosa delais Kiosa, Ohosa, very well,
- 13:26miss Kyosa formal. Aren't you so long? Delas a long? Philip?
- 13:33Did I hear anything? I'll toss it your way. The evening papers carried
- 13:46a squib about Marilyn Delormey found strangled in her Court Street apartment. That was
- 13:50all dead end until about one o'clock in the morning when the telephone started having
- 13:56hysterics on my night table. Oh, Philip, this delorious glory, glory.
- 14:07Oh oh yeah, sure, you come over to my place right away.
- 14:09Twenty four to twelve rand Flu Street, below Fountain a bungalow Court.
- 14:15Mine is the last one in line. But Sugar, what's the matter?
- 14:18Lauris, Look, what what's the matter? King Leo Party is here too,
- 14:22Kingleo Party? You passed out of my ben. It's absurd, isn't
- 14:26it. Yeah, it's absurd. It cost you twenty bucks? All right,
- 14:30but hurry, please hurry right over? Phone calls in the dead to
- 14:35night. I should have been a midwife. Oh, come in, Philip,
- 14:54I'm sorry I woke you at this hour. That's okay. I always
- 14:58get up around this time. And how to take my bitters and answer phone
- 15:01calls? Where is he? Oh? May I have a cigarette? Sure?
- 15:07Thanks? Right? Where did you say it was? Now? Am
- 15:18I dan? Oh? Philip? Philip isn't drunk at all? Did you
- 15:22really think he was drunk? He's dead? What the king is dead?
- 15:28Don't live them with my gun, you, lady Wins the large keeper.
- 15:37Don take him on this goe and look at him. You are listening to
- 15:56the Adventures of Philip Marlowe, starring Van Heflin. Yes, families all over

- 16:08tasting Pepsident with a new cool minty flavor. It's preferred three to one over
- 16:15any other toothpaste. It's true. Families all over America say New Pepsident is
- 16:21their favorite three to one. The paul A Thompson family Summer Street, Stanford,
- 16:25Connecticut, preferred New Pepsident on every single count. The Thompsons say New
- 16:30Pepsident tastes best of all, makes breath cleaner, makes teeth brighter on all
- 16:36these counts by an overwhelming average of three to one. Families prefer New Pepsident
- 16:41over any other toothpaste they tried. It's a fact, families three to one
- 16:47saying New Pepsident tastes better, makes breath cleaner, and makes teeth brighter.
- 16:52Remember this is not just our opinion, it's the honest conviction of the Thompsons
- 16:56and other families who compared New Pepsident with a toothpaste they were using at home.
- 17:02Get New Pepsident, the only toothpaste containing rium. Get it for your
- 17:07family without delay. We continue with the adventures of Philip Harlow starring Van Heflin,
- 17:22who appears by arrangement with Metro Golden Mayre producers of The Hucksters starring Clark
- 17:26Gable. Delais showed me to the den in the back of the house.
- 17:48Trumpetman King Lear Party was lying on the studio couch, large, smooth and
- 17:53artificial looking even in death. A small mouser automatic hung loosely in his right
- 17:59hand. There was a bullet hole in his golden yellow sport coat, right
- 18:03over his heart. Delorius, is this your gun? Yes, someone gave
- 18:11it to me one time. I don't even know how to use it.
- 18:15Oh no, I don't expect you or anyone to believe me. Don't expect
- 18:18anything. Just tell it. Well. I was out laid, I sing
- 18:25at KFQC on a late fifteen minute program. Agatha and I got home about
- 18:30eleven thirty. It was the Cap, my maid. I came into the
- 18:33den for some liquor and fizz water and found him like that, I said,
- 18:41at the home, so she wouldn't find him. Finally, I thought
- 18:44of calling you, Well he got in here. How I don't know.
- 18:47Were you ever in love with him? The King never loved anyone. I
- 18:51ask if you loved him. I hated everything about him. Better to tell,
- 18:55the Cap said is, but Kope said he I gotta help. It
- 18:56is the truth, Delorious. Going out in the other room and buy yourself
- 19:02a drinker. I want to be alone here with tall, dead and handsome
- 19:06going on. After Delores had taken her white face out of that room,
- 19:19I could work better. I went through the King's pocket and found his key
- 19:25ring. One key fit very nicely in the lock of the back door.
- 19:29I went to the living room, where Delores was huddled against the arm of
- 19:32the davenport, trying to become a part of the pattern. Delors, how
- 19:37long has Agatha been with you? Two years? Did you ever steal anything
- 19:42from you? Small things? All? There are nylons now and then I
- 19:48didn't mind. Why, Well she sold the key to somebody, a key
- 19:52to this apartment. Oh what's the difference, Philip, We're wasting time.
- 19:56I'm done for as a nice person. I think it was a lo it
- 20:00was quarrel and I shot him, or that he shot himself over knee.
- 20:03Well, you don't die from the ladder, though your reputation does. And
- 20:06I care about what people think of me. Yeah, well that's what makes
- 20:11me for you again, lady. Thanks Philip. Now, look, suppose
- 20:14you give me a description of Agatha and tell me where she lives. I
- 20:17want to talk to her tonight. I drove down Brighton Avenue looking for the
- 20:30house to Loris had described to me all at once. I slammed on my
- 20:33brakes in the driveway of a vacant house to the small coup de Lorius had
- 20:41described Agatha's car, and that was it. An Agatha did not live in
- 20:47an empty house. So I got out and walked up the gravel driveway and
- 20:51looked into the car, and then I got back in my own car and
- 20:56drove until I found an all night drug store. I phone detected lieutenanty Barra,
- 21:03Hello, Ebert, write this down brighton Avenue, thirty two hundred block
- 21:11west side driveway of empty house, car parked with dead woman in it.
- 21:19When alive answered to the name of Agatha strangled. I went back to the
- 21:30Carleton Hotel where it all started. The night before. Quillen, the head
- 21:34day clerk, was on night duty. That surprised me a little bit.
- 21:38It was two am and very empty, very quiet in a lobby. That
- 21:42was fine. Well, if it is smorrow. The old clues man a
- 21:49good good morning, and triped like that, Hello Quillan, how come you're
- 21:53on duty? Miller went on vacation this am. My brother has a cabinet
- 21:56crestline on the Rawhead Road. I didn't even know I had a brother,
- 22:00now you know? Well, then look, how come an old hotel man
- 22:03like you registers floozies like that Marylynd delure me on the same floor with people
- 22:07like King Leo Party. What you heard me, my host? I didn't
- 22:11register the girl Orleoparty Millard did what you heard me? Well? Why was
- 22:17the room between their rooms empty last night? In times like these, malar
- 22:19had it marked on change plumbing out of whack or something? Why? Well,
- 22:25here's why. A lad with a pass key could have gone into that
- 22:27room and then unlocked the two connecting doors. And then you get to run
- 22:32a bus service between the girl's room and Lea parties? What are you driving
- 22:36at That girl in eighty eleven had a gun and Lea Party had a threat
- 22:38letter last night? Now here's what I want you to do. Call a
- 22:41hotel where Leo Party is staying now and ask if he's there? Why?
- 22:44Because good enough, best reason in the world. Wife, what was uses
- 22:48it? Wait here? In about three minutes, Perlan came back and leaned
- 23:00on the counter again, Leo Party isn't there. I talked to a guy
- 23:03in his sweet It was almost sober. He said, Leoparty got a call
- 23:06about eleven from some girl. What girl? He didn't know, but Leoparty
- 23:10went out priming himself. Okay, thanks cool. Anything to do with that
- 23:15brail you had with Leoparty here last night, No, all in the spirit
- 23:18of boorish mahe that at eight fifteen has a jinx on it. You know,
- 23:25girl shot herself there two years ago. What the girl shot herself?
- 23:27Yeah, yeah, you said that, But what girl? I don't know
- 23:30what her real name was. Look here, Quillan, I want to see
- 23:33your hotel files of that day two years ago and all the newspaper clippings about
- 23:36it. Come on, right, all right, let go of my arm
- 23:37physical culture. I'll get the keys to the record room. I read the
- 23:48hotel files of that day two years ago, and I read the newspaper clippings
- 23:52of that suicide in eight fifteen. Then I asked Quillan just where George Millar's
- 23:56brother had his cabin in the mountains. It was just getting light when I
- 24:07pulled up at the cabin, high against the growth of dagger pine and cedar.
- 24:11Smoke was curling from the chimney. Someone was awake. George Mallar himself
- 24:17opened the door. Marlow, it's good to see you. How'd you ever
- 24:22find us up here? How about some baker? The name the answer and
- 24:26my brief Marlow morning manner is yes as well. I'll wake up my brother
- 24:32and Lali together. You don't have to wake me. Yes, I'm up.
- 24:34Oh, oh, hello, Gay? Who's your friend? George?
- 24:38This is Philip Marlow. You heard me talking to him? Yamana Geff Collie
- 24:45at the name, Yeah, my brother, that's his fighting name. He
- 24:48used to be a heavyweight boxer. Fighter, boxers, dance fighters fight.
- 24:56Let's get coffee started that. Marlow's hungry, So I had a busy night.
- 25:00King Lear party has been bumped off, bumped all lowbrow killed vernacular for
- 25:07murder. The king is dead? Where how in a girl's apartment? Nice
- 25:11girl too? The old suicide gag. But it could ruin the girl.
- 25:17That's lousy. Yeah, yeah, but it won't work. It was murder.
- 25:22What makes you think it was murder? Well, gaff the way I
- 25:26cased the job. The kill was supposed to have been pulled in his room
- 25:29eight fifteen at the Carlton Hotel night before last. Is that a fact though?
- 25:33Yeah? I spoil it by giving the king the marry heave hole before
- 25:37the girl in eighty eleven could get to him, didn't I, George?
- 25:44I guess you did. Yeah, of course it would have been poetic justice
- 25:48if King lear Party had been killed in the same room where a girl committed
- 25:52suicide two years ago, registered as Mary Smith usual name Eve Tally. Did
- 25:59you hear that gaff Tally Eve Tally? I heard it, Mano. So
- 26:04we had a sister named Eve shot herself in eight fifteen at the column.
- 26:07So what soul? George here told me that Quillen registered that professional gun girl
- 26:12in eight fifteen night before last. Oh, no, George registered her.
- 26:18So so George kept the room between the girl and Leo Party vacant and everything
- 26:22was quiet. He had opened the communicating doors, and Marilyn Delomee would walk
- 26:26into the King's room, muffle her twenty five and a pillow and shoot the
- 26:30king and he sleep. How am I doing? Boys? Fine? Marlon?
- 26:37How am I doing again? What do we that guy? How about
- 26:40you even checked? On one eighteen Court Street I found Marilyn Delomy strangled.
- 26:45She knew too much For a few Buckshoe boys got Agatha to call Leo party
- 26:49last night from the radio station. Pretend she was Dolores with an interesting invitation.
- 26:55The king always had a yen for Dolores, and he came running.
- 26:57You shot the king before Dolores came home and left him in her den.
- 27:02Then Gaff got rid of Aga. She knew too much too Bill, Your
- 27:04party was the worst kind of aret. We loved our sister. She fell
- 27:10for him and he threw her out. She killed us. What would you
- 27:15do? Mallo would take his gun, George, don't get between us or
- 27:18behind him. As forty five goes right on through, I'll have to take
- 27:25your gun, Mama. I'll always treat it like your own, won't you.
- 27:30George got it, George, I've got it. Stand out of the
- 27:33way. Does it have to be this way? Gaff? Yeah, it
- 27:36has to be this way, George. George and Gaff, the avengers of
- 27:38innocent girlhood and their righteous indignation shut up lynch mob's tarn feather merchants and other
- 27:44laws under themselves. Take notice, George and Gaff. They wrote the book
- 27:48The Death. There's been enough killing. No death. I won't no death.
- 27:53I'm warning you'll look by deaf. I'm sorry I had to do George,
- 28:10he's dead. I had to do it. I just had to do.
- 28:12You understand on too. He was a killer. He killed three people.
- 28:18He wasn't gonna kill a fourth. I wanted to Leopolo up in the
- 28:21open and take what came, but Gaff tried to do in cuta. I
- 28:25didn't know Leopodo was didn't And you told me, Moll the way I believe
- 28:27it. George. Yeah, is your gun back? It shoots fine.
- 28:47I put in a big pitch for George at headquarters. After all, he
- 28:49hadn't killed anybody except Gaff, and that was in self defense and in defense
- 28:55of an unofficial copper named Marlowe. He won't go get off scott free,
- 29:00but he won't inhale Cyanide either, at the taxpayer's expense. After I talked
- 29:06to Iber at headquarters, I telephoned Dolores Kios and I didn't give her the
- 29:11sort of details, but just told her not to worry that she was in
