- 0:00Speaker 1: Whereupon the princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves,
- 0:04Speaker 1: and they said, The Lord is righteous. 2 Chronicles 12.6
- 0:11Speaker 1: Dear God, in this moment, I will not allow my
- 0:15Speaker 1: legacy to be remembered through a negative lens, like the
- 0:18Speaker 1: two kings in today's story. As much as it remains
- 0:22Speaker 1: with me, I will leave a legacy worthy of telling
- 0:26Speaker 1: my future generations about. I will use whatever influence you've
- 0:31Speaker 1: given me to influence those around me to honor and
- 0:37Speaker 1: to love you, Lord, with their whole hearts. In this moment,
- 0:42Speaker 1: I declare that my life will serve as a lamp
- 0:46Speaker 1: to point people to the marvelous path of abundant peace
- 0:50Speaker 1: and provision you provide for your children who live in
- 0:54Speaker 1: accordance to your ways. Even when I make a mistake,
- 0:59Speaker 1: I will be swift to correct and redirect my steps.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Thank you for never leaving me and for always giving
- 1:08Speaker 1: me another chance to become the best version of myself.
- 1:14Speaker 1: You are good, and your mercy endures forever. My soul
- 1:20Speaker 1: knows this very well. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you
- 1:29Speaker 1: for making prayer a priority in your day. To learn
- 1:32Speaker 1: more about the Bible, stay tuned for today's story. Brought

- 1:49Speaker 2: The Legacy of Kings In our last story, we learned
- 1:54Speaker 2: about the man of God's disobedience towards the Lord and
- 1:58Speaker 2: He was tricked into eating among the wicked city and
- 2:01Speaker 2: ultimately devoured by a lion. Meanwhile, the country of Israel
- 2:05Speaker 2: was descending into wickedness under the leadership of Jeroboam. In
- 2:10Speaker 2: this story, we behold the two kings, Jeroboam of Israel
- 2:14Speaker 2: and Rehoboam of Judah, and the fates of both men,
- 2:18Speaker 2: as well as their legacies, inspired by the book of
- 2:21Speaker 2: 1 Kings.
- 2:25Speaker 3: We're so glad you joined us on the Bible in
- 2:27Speaker 3: a Year podcast today. The Bible in a Year podcast
- 2:30Speaker 3: is an outreach of PowerPoint Ministries and can only come
- 2:34Speaker 3: to you each week through the support of listeners just
- 2:37Speaker 3: like you. Your support today is so important that we
- 2:40Speaker 3: want to thank you for your gift by giving you
- 2:42Speaker 3: a copy of my book called The Jesus Book. It
- 2:45Speaker 3: is a powerful guide that shows how every book of
- 2:48Speaker 3: the Bible points to Jesus and how his living word,
- 2:51Speaker 3: the truth of God's word, will transform your life. So
- 2:55Speaker 3: to get a copy of the Jesus book, simply go
- 2:58Speaker 3: to jackgraham.org slash Jesus. That's jackgraham.org slash Jesus. And thank
- 3:05Speaker 3: you for your support. In our previous reading, we heard
- 3:10Speaker 3: about the man of God who went to Jeroboam to
- 3:13Speaker 3: deliver a word of condemnation from God for this king
- 3:16Speaker 3: who had turned to idol worship and abandoned God's truth.
- 3:21Speaker 3: On his trip home, he had believed the word of
- 3:22Speaker 3: a prophet who had lied to him about God, and
- 3:25Speaker 3: then he disobeyed the Lord's command. This disobedience cost this
- 3:30Speaker 3: man his life. As we'll hear in today's passage, the
- 3:34Speaker 3: two kings in the divided kingdom of Israel will suffer
- 3:37Speaker 3: the consequences of their own sins. We'll once more be
- 3:41Speaker 3: reminded that the only path to true success in life
- 3:45Speaker 3: is by believing God's commands and obeying Him. Let's listen
- 3:50Speaker 3: now to God's Word.
- 3:54Speaker 2: It was late into the night. The clouds were thick
- 3:57Speaker 2: in the sky and blocking the stars from shining down
- 4:00Speaker 2: on Israel. The land was asleep, except King Jeroboam, who
- 4:05Speaker 2: was sitting at the bedside of his son, Abijah. The
- 4:08Speaker 2: boy quivered in his sleep. The sheets were damp from
- 4:12Speaker 2: his sweat, and he trembled from his fever. Jeroboam stroked
- 4:16Speaker 2: his son's hair and patted his forehead with a damp
- 4:19Speaker 2: cloth He could not stand to see the suffering of
- 4:22Speaker 2: his son. His wife was beside him, holding her son's hand.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Jeroboam looked at her and said, We have no clue
- 4:29Speaker 2: what is wrong with him or if he will make it.
- 4:32Speaker 2: You should disguise yourself and leave the city towards Shiloh.
- 4:36Speaker 2: There is a prophet named Ahijah. He is the one
- 4:39Speaker 2: who told me I would be king long ago. Go
- 4:42Speaker 2: and ask him about our son's future. So the king's
- 4:46Speaker 2: wife departed towards Shiloh. She rode into the night shrouded
- 4:50Speaker 2: under a cloak to hide her identity. She came to Shiloh,
- 4:54Speaker 2: where he dwelled. There was a small home in the
- 4:57Speaker 2: hills where he lived. The queen entered the home to
- 5:00Speaker 2: find the prophet old and decrepit in his bed. Ahijah
- 5:04Speaker 2: could not see in his old age, but he was
- 5:06Speaker 2: still attuned to the Lord's spirit and wisdom. Jeroboam's wife
- 5:11Speaker 2: will come to you pretending to be someone else, the
- 5:14Speaker 2: Lord told him. Tell her only what I tell you.
- 5:19Speaker 2: So when he heard the footsteps of the queen, he
- 5:21Speaker 2: called out, Come on in, dear wife of Jeroboam. Why
- 5:26Speaker 2: do you hide your identity? She was shocked to hear
- 5:29Speaker 2: him call out to her, and paralyzed by his insight
- 5:32Speaker 2: despite his blindness. I have disturbing news, he told her.
- 5:37Speaker 2: The Lord has spoken to your husband, saying, I have
- 5:40Speaker 2: given you all you have asked for. I ripped the
- 5:43Speaker 2: kingdom away from the line of David and gave it
- 5:45Speaker 2: to you. But you are nothing like my servant David.
- 5:49Speaker 2: You have done more evil than all kings who have
- 5:51Speaker 2: lived before you. Since you have turned your back to me,
- 5:54Speaker 2: I shall bring disaster to your lineage. Your family will
- 5:58Speaker 2: die in the city streets and be remembered no more.
- 6:03Speaker 2: A few small tears fell from Jeroboam's wife. Her hands
- 6:07Speaker 2: began to shake as she listened to the old prophet
- 6:09Speaker 2: speak curses over her family. Ahijah got up from his
- 6:13Speaker 2: bed and held her hands. When you return home, your
- 6:17Speaker 2: son shall be dead. All of Israel shall mourn for him,
- 6:21Speaker 2: for he is the only good thing to come out
- 6:24Speaker 2: of Jeroboam's life. He then released her hands. The queen
- 6:28Speaker 2: stood up and began to leave. As her back was
- 6:31Speaker 2: turned to the prophet, he spoke one last thing. This
- 6:34Speaker 2: would prove to be the most disturbing news of all.
- 6:38Speaker 2: The Lord will raise up a new king to destroy
- 6:41Speaker 2: your husband. He will shake Israel to its core, and
- 6:44Speaker 2: it shall be whipped about like a log and rapids.
- 6:48Speaker 2: They will be uprooted and scattered beyond the Euphrates River.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Israel will feel abandoned because of Jeroboam. Without a word,
- 6:57Speaker 2: she fled back to the city. The child had died,
- 7:00Speaker 2: just as Ahijah had predicted, and the rest of Jeroboam's
- 7:04Speaker 2: kingship was marked with war. His reign was 22 years,
- 7:09Speaker 2: and most of his time was plagued with dysfunction, idol worship,
- 7:13Speaker 2: and needless conflict. Once he passed... His son Nadab took
- 7:18Speaker 2: over as king.
- 7:23Speaker 3: We begin today's scripture in the palace of King Jeroboam.
- 7:27Speaker 3: He refused to turn from his wicked ways and his
- 7:30Speaker 3: son Abijah now lay sick in his bed. The king
- 7:34Speaker 3: is desperate for answers, but there are none. He then
- 7:38Speaker 3: remembered a name he had long since forgotten, Ahijah, the
- 7:42Speaker 3: prophet who had spoken God's word to him concerning the
- 7:45Speaker 3: division of Israel and that the northern tribes would make
- 7:48Speaker 3: him king. It's the same prophet who warned Jeroboam to
- 7:52Speaker 3: keep God's commands and follow him, something else that he
- 7:56Speaker 3: had forgotten long ago. So he sends his wife to
- 8:00Speaker 3: Ahijah and tells her to disguise herself and inquire of
- 8:04Speaker 3: their son's future. She does what the king asked and
- 8:07Speaker 3: enters the prophet's home. His eyes are weak, but his
- 8:11Speaker 3: spirit is still strong, and he senses God speaking to him,
- 8:14Speaker 3: telling him who this woman is, and to tell her
- 8:17Speaker 3: only what God says. Ahijah beckons her to come near,
- 8:23Speaker 3: identifying her as the king's wife. He then delivers bad news.
- 8:27Speaker 3: God gave Jeroboam all he had asked for, but he
- 8:30Speaker 3: turned his back on God. He became a more wicked
- 8:33Speaker 3: king than Israel had ever known. And for this, his
- 8:38Speaker 3: family would come to destruction. The sick son would be
- 8:41Speaker 3: dead when the woman got back home and Jeroboam's rule
- 8:44Speaker 3: would come to an end and the people would be scattered.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Jeroboam's sins would cause all of Israel to feel abandoned.
- 8:52Speaker 3: And in 1 Kings 14 verse 16, we read God's
- 8:55Speaker 3: final words to Jeroboam's wife. And he will give Israel
- 9:00Speaker 3: up because of the sins of Jeroboam, which he sinned
- 9:04Speaker 3: and made Israel to sin. When she returned home, she
- 9:08Speaker 3: found the son dead, just as Ahijah had prophesied, and
- 9:12Speaker 3: all the people mourned the loss of this child. It
- 9:15Speaker 3: was said that the child was the only good thing
- 9:18Speaker 3: to ever come from Jeroboam's life. What a sad commentary
- 9:22Speaker 3: on the worthless legacy of this king who had been
- 9:25Speaker 3: chosen by God. He had held such promise, but his
- 9:30Speaker 3: name is now ruined forever because he chose to follow
- 9:33Speaker 3: after other gods and give his worship to false gods
- 9:36Speaker 3: rather than the one true God, and to lead Israel
- 9:39Speaker 3: to sin. His reign was marred by idolatry and conflict
- 9:44Speaker 3: with the southern kingdom ruled by Rehoboam. Rehoboam did not
- 9:49Speaker 3: fare much better. In fact, Judah was even worse off
- 9:53Speaker 3: under his reign. The people turned to idolatry and ritual prostitution.
- 9:58Speaker 3: God's wrath burned against Judah and the king of Egypt
- 10:02Speaker 3: invaded the land, pillaging gold and treasures from God's house
- 10:05Speaker 3: and the king's palace. The richly adorned temple Solomon had
- 10:09Speaker 3: built was a shadow of his former glory. God was
- 10:13Speaker 3: judging his people for their lack of faith and devotion
- 10:16Speaker 3: to him, but he would not abandon them. Their future
- 10:21Speaker 3: would be marked by much conflict and only a few
- 10:24Speaker 3: kings who followed God and sought his favor. Much of
- 10:27Speaker 3: what would come would be evil kings who turned from
- 10:30Speaker 3: God and with them the people. These evil kings ruled
- 10:34Speaker 3: and the people paid the price, for they all fell
- 10:37Speaker 3: into sin and judgment. There will, however, be glimmers of
- 10:43Speaker 3: a future hope. a time when God would send the
- 10:46Speaker 3: true and one mighty King that would point Israel and
- 10:49Speaker 3: the whole world to God the Father. His name is
- 10:54Speaker 3: Jesus and the promised Messiah and the Savior of the world.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Dear God, thank you for what we learn in today's reading,
- 11:04Speaker 3: that you are serious about sin and will always judge disobedience.
- 11:09Speaker 3: May we learn your ways and do your will and
- 11:12Speaker 3: walk in holiness before you. May we see that judgment
- 11:17Speaker 3: comes upon all of those who reject you and believe
- 11:20Speaker 3: the lies of Satan. Thank you for your son Jesus Christ,
- 11:25Speaker 3: the Savior who came into the world to give his
- 11:28Speaker 3: life on the cross to die and to rise again
- 11:30Speaker 3: so that we could have eternal life. That we can
- 11:34Speaker 3: turn from our idols and our old ways and have
- 11:37Speaker 3: a brand new life. And if you want this brand
- 11:41Speaker 3: new life, why don't where you are right now, bow
- 11:45Speaker 3: your head and pray a prayer like this. Dear God,
- 11:50Speaker 3: I thank you for loving me, for sending your Son
- 11:53Speaker 3: into the world to be my Savior. I believe, Jesus,
- 11:58Speaker 3: that you died and rose again and that you're coming
- 12:01Speaker 3: again for me. And I trust you as my Lord
- 12:04Speaker 3: and my Savior. Lord, I give you my heart. I
- 12:08Speaker 3: will follow you by the power of your Spirit all
- 12:11Speaker 3: the days of my life. Amen. Thank you for listening
- 12:16Speaker 3: to today's Bible in a Year podcast. And before we go,
