- 0:39SPEAKER_04: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by the Nation, Part of the Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:43SPEAKER_04: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez.
- 0:45SPEAKER_04: My co-host Tristan McGonagall is here.
- 0:47SPEAKER_04: Tristan, it's bowl week, brother.
- 0:50SPEAKER_03: Steven, how was your day off?
- 0:52SPEAKER_03: I mean, your week off from uh podcasting that you put us through this uh the the that black hole of silence.
- 0:58SPEAKER_04: I had to go to my company meetings in Charlotte, North Carolina.
- 1:03SPEAKER_04: So I spent the week there.
- 1:04SPEAKER_04: Um holiday party on a Wednesday, not a great idea, I'll say.
- 1:09SPEAKER_04: Uh we were all miserable from Thursday on, as uh as probably anybody would be after a holiday party.
- 1:16SPEAKER_04: Um, so yeah, but it was great, it was fun.
- 1:18SPEAKER_04: I'm sorry, it was all my fault that we didn't record last week, but we are here.
- 1:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we were here.
- 1:24SPEAKER_03: It's it's bull week, as he said.
- 1:25SPEAKER_03: So we actually have stuff to really talk about this week.
- 1:28SPEAKER_03: It would have been kind of dull last week, because I mean we have we usually have nothing but very interesting and intelligent things to say.
- 1:34SPEAKER_03: So I'm glad we have good topics to roll with this week.
- 1:40SPEAKER_04: Yes, we have tons of football stuff.
- 1:42SPEAKER_04: Transfer portal, who's coming back?
- 1:45SPEAKER_04: Though the sport is dead to us, though football is dead to me, we are still in the best bowl game anybody could have asked for, which is the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana.
- 1:58SPEAKER_04: Every single collegiate football player at the beginning of the season, they all get together with their coaches and their teams and say, I want to be in Shreveport at the end of the season.
- 2:08SPEAKER_04: They always say it.
- 2:10SPEAKER_04: We all have the same goal.
- 2:12SPEAKER_04: Our eyes are on Shreveport.
- 2:13SPEAKER_04: Eyes on Shreveport.
- 2:15SPEAKER_04: That's the goal.
- 2:16SPEAKER_04: We did it.
- 2:17SPEAKER_04: Texas Tech did it.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: I've done, I've done my uh uh my part to celebrate this bull bid by buying my very own radiance technology.
- 2:28SPEAKER_04: Wow, yeah, awesome.
- 2:30SPEAKER_04: What what is that eat what does that entail?
- 2:31SPEAKER_04: What's uh let's what do you get?
- 2:33SPEAKER_03: Let's let's let's let's find out.
- 2:35SPEAKER_03: Um Radiance Technologies.
- 2:38SPEAKER_03: Okay, so um it's I I went ahead and bought a um This is great.
- 2:44SPEAKER_04: It's just great podcasting.
- 2:45SPEAKER_03: Um uh uh the first thing that pops up is the bowl.
- 2:53SPEAKER_03: They're hey, they're they're not a good sign.
- 2:55SPEAKER_03: They're employee owns.
- 2:57SPEAKER_03: Okay, they're solutions, they sell solutions, and I bought I bought me a solution of intelligence, cyber, and direct energy.
- 3:05SPEAKER_03: So this is a bit gone wrong, and I think that I couldn't be happier with the way we landed.
- 3:13SPEAKER_04: The Radiance Technologies Independence Hall in Shreep, Louisiana.
- 3:17SPEAKER_04: Uh, your six and six Texas Tech Red Raiders take on the six and six Cal Golden Bears.
- 3:24SPEAKER_04: Um we play the nerds.
- 3:28SPEAKER_04: Both of these teams are six six and six.
- 3:31SPEAKER_04: Um what are your thoughts?
- 3:33SPEAKER_04: What are you I I mean at this point, are you just having to be in a bowl game?
- 3:36SPEAKER_04: Are you um you know, kind of just meh about it?
- 3:40SPEAKER_04: What's your what's your thoughts?
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: Well, seeing as we were just as screwed over as Florida State at the playoff.
- 3:46SPEAKER_03: I am I think we should boycott this bowl game.
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: Uh, the only reason why that I want us to go through with it is because it's the Shreveport Radiance Technologies Bowl.
- 3:57SPEAKER_03: Everybody wants to be there.
- 3:59SPEAKER_03: You don't you don't you get to tell your kids you saw your team play in Shreveport Radiance Technology Bowl.
- 4:05SPEAKER_03: But dude, honestly, out of the the bid that we pulled, I mean, why why not?
- 4:09SPEAKER_03: What are we gonna do?
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: Complain.
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: I'm glad I'm glad it was it was California rather than uh some like other boo-boo g5 team that you know we could have lost to, like Wyoming.
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: Um, and so I I I'm glad that it's California.
- 4:23SPEAKER_03: I it's I guess that's I guess that's kind of cool.
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: What the last time we saw them, it was uh Aaron Rodgers, and we beat him with uh Sonny Gumby.
- 4:31SPEAKER_04: Yep, 04 holiday bowl.
- 4:34SPEAKER_04: The rematch that all of us wanted Cal versus Texas Tech.
- 4:38SPEAKER_03: I've heard Aaron Rodgers will be there.
- 4:40SPEAKER_03: I've I've heard that too.
- 4:42SPEAKER_03: The avenging of his team, yeah.
- 4:43SPEAKER_04: Sonny's not too far.
- 4:45SPEAKER_04: He could go up and go watch us.
- 4:47SPEAKER_03: Uh absolutely a little good juju going on, but hopefully not do any of the coaching.
- 4:52SPEAKER_03: Um, because uh the La Tech Bulldogs, we're we're in some trouble over there right now.
- 4:58SPEAKER_03: Um looking great, are they good at all?
- 5:01SPEAKER_03: Um, all right, so let's see.
- 5:04SPEAKER_03: Uh Cal appears to be absolute buns.
- 5:07SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, but they but they are on a three-game winning streak.
- 5:11SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, they they topped off the year by beating Washington State, Stanford, and UC UCLA.
- 5:17SPEAKER_03: Granted, not a stellar pack of teams there, but I mean, at least they're feeling a little higher than we are, I suppose.
- 5:24SPEAKER_03: You know, all 24 of their fans.
- 5:26SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, yeah, I'm sure they're gonna have a massive crowd over in Shreeport.
- 5:30SPEAKER_04: Uh, I'm sure nobody that is a Cal Golden Bear fan would ever step in the city of Shreeport because they're a bunch of nerds and they will never leave California.
- 5:42SPEAKER_04: But like, okay, they have some.
- 5:45SPEAKER_04: We obviously have a group of players that we'll get to that have entered the transfer portal.
- 5:49SPEAKER_04: Um, they have a group, this is the case with all of college football when it comes to this time of year.
- 5:54SPEAKER_04: Everybody's entered the portal.
- 5:56SPEAKER_04: You're playing a lot of young guys.
- 5:57SPEAKER_04: That's that's the most exciting part about this bowl game is watching your young players get some minutes and get some snaps here because our whole wide receiver room, it seems, has entered the transfer portal.
- 6:09SPEAKER_04: Um, not our whole, there's still a lot of good returners that I don't want to diminish those guys that are coming back, but um a lot of off like a couple offensive linemen, a lot of wide receivers uh moving on from Texas Tech.
- 6:22SPEAKER_04: And so we will get to see some young guns play in these positions for the first time, probably that we've seen them.
- 6:28SPEAKER_04: And um, you know, just get get some reps, get some game time, it'll be good for those guys.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: Well, I look, I know we're gluttons for punishment.
- 6:37SPEAKER_03: Um, so I'll turn on Tex Tech football anytime it's on.
- 6:41SPEAKER_03: But that's that's this is a great point that you're making, is kind of seeing the future.
- 6:45SPEAKER_03: And I made this point on the last podcast that you can really send yourselves off with good vibes into the offseason if you put on a show in the bowl game.
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: Granted, this bowl, even though not even though it's the the Radiance Technology bowl game and tree port, um, it's not exactly the past two years where it was actually a pretty exciting matchup and we annihilated them.
- 7:07SPEAKER_03: Um, it's it could still send us ended on the right note and really bringing these transfers on a high one to go into the uh uh into the offseason feeling good about ourselves.
- 7:16SPEAKER_03: And I think that's all you can ask for right now.
- 7:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I mean Joey made a good point in his presser uh when they I think the team arrived either today or yesterday at Shreeport and um basically said, you know, the couple days after the Texas game when they were just practicing, uh it was like all the old guys sit the sit these days out, and you're just playing your freshmen, your redshirt freshmen, your sophomores, guys that don't get, you know, uh first team reps, second team reps in practice are getting these reps.
- 7:46SPEAKER_04: And at least, you know, the coaching staff can get a grasp on who's actually going to be a dude here at Texas Tech.
- 7:52SPEAKER_04: Is is are any of these young guys, did they progress from you know, spring ball to now?
- 7:58SPEAKER_04: I know they've been third string, fourth string kind of guys, but um, you know, potentially they could be something, and they're trying to fight figure that out right now.
- 8:05SPEAKER_04: And I think that's really cool for them.
- 8:07SPEAKER_04: Um, and they'll get some real game time here against Cal because, like we mentioned, um, you know, Tyler Shuck, uh, Miles Price, Jaron Bradley, JJ Sparkman, Loick Fungi, all those guys are in the portal.
- 8:19SPEAKER_04: They're not gonna play this game.
- 8:20SPEAKER_04: Um, uh Monroe Mills, starting left tackle all year, not gonna play because he is in the transfer portal.
- 8:27SPEAKER_04: So there's your young lineman coming in to play and show what he's made of.
- 8:31SPEAKER_04: And and yeah, it's a game against the six and six Cal team, not very good.
- 8:35SPEAKER_04: Uh, they also have some players that aren't playing, but again, it's about the game time, it's about the reps, it's about seeing what they can potentially do.
- 8:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, it's it's a bit of a like you're like the point you're making here, it's a bit of a tryout for uh the roles come come next year, right?
- 8:48SPEAKER_03: Uh there's really no replacement than game time.
- 8:51SPEAKER_03: Like obviously you'd be a star and practice, and practice is is extremely important, but you know what really matters is what happens on the gridiron.
- 8:59SPEAKER_03: And so this is the time for these guys to step up and shine and see if they deserve a starting spot on the first lineup.
- 9:05SPEAKER_03: So it's gonna be fun to see.
- 9:06SPEAKER_03: You know, maybe we'll see a breakout star like you're alluding to.
- 9:09SPEAKER_03: Um, and maybe we'll perhaps see guys that you know really solidify the roles going forward.
- 9:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, some other guys that aren't haven't entered into the transfer portal and but will not play this game.
- 9:20SPEAKER_04: Miles Cole looks like he's opted out, he's gonna go uh begin his training for the NFL draft.
- 9:26SPEAKER_04: Um, Jalen Hutchings, not gonna play this game, unfortunately.
- 9:30SPEAKER_04: Uh, dealing with um the injury that he suffered against Texas.
- 9:34SPEAKER_04: Um, Dylan Spencer and Jordan Brown are questionable with uh their own separate injuries for right now.
- 9:40SPEAKER_04: So those are just some guys that um, you know, it sucks about Jalen because uh we could always use another game of watching Jalen Hutchings in a red raider uniform.
- 9:48SPEAKER_04: But um, you know, we obviously we wish him the best in his pro career, whatever he decides to do after.
- 9:54SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, Miles Cole as well.
- 9:56SPEAKER_04: Uh, we're not gonna see those guys in red raider uniforms again.
- 9:59SPEAKER_04: But uh, you know, we loved them while they were here and uh we're thankful that, you know, they gave it they gave it what they did.
- 10:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, what more can you say?
- 10:07SPEAKER_03: I mean, I know fans uh give players crap and often rightfully so for sitting out of bowl games.
- 10:12SPEAKER_03: Um, but with this, it's it's kind of hard to blame them.
- 10:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, Miles Cole's one of those guys that's on the like, you know, it's on the line.
- 10:19SPEAKER_04: Like, yeah, you're gonna get drafted potentially, but you know, is it really worth sitting out one more game?
- 10:26SPEAKER_04: Um, I I guess so when you're talking about injury risks and all that kind of stuff.
- 10:30SPEAKER_04: I mean, right, you know, uh even if you don't get drafted and you get picked up by a team, you want to be fully healthy going into that training camp.
- 10:36SPEAKER_04: So yeah, you know, it's all these guys' personal decisions.
- 10:39SPEAKER_04: Joey seems fine with it, I'm fine with it.
- 10:41SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, sucks about Jalen the most.
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, absolutely absolutely, dude.
- 10:46SPEAKER_04: So uh looks like Baron's good to go.
- 10:48SPEAKER_04: Uh the coaching staff seems pretty confident that he's getting good.
- 10:53SPEAKER_03: I know what percentage are we at with Baron Warden right now?
- 10:56SPEAKER_03: Uh you know, I don't know.
- 10:58SPEAKER_04: I don't know at this point.
- 11:00SPEAKER_04: Uh, he's had some time to kind of chill and rest that shoulder a little bit.
- 11:05SPEAKER_04: I don't the problem is we don't really know the severity of it.
- 11:08SPEAKER_04: Like we don't know how injured that shoulder was for him to, you know, is it three weeks and you're a hundred percent?
- 11:15SPEAKER_04: Is he gonna need months before it's you know 100 good to go?
- 11:19SPEAKER_04: Is he gonna have a surgery in the offseason to potentially help him out a little bit?
- 11:22SPEAKER_04: That's where my mind went.
- 11:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we don't know, you know.
- 11:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, it's just it I really want to see a healthy Baron Morton because that guy, that kid is a gunslinger, and I'm already sort of seeing him kind of go full throttle rather than this very tenderness we've kind of been seeing lately.
- 11:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and uh during the season, you have to grind, like you have to go and you have to play through stuff.
- 11:42SPEAKER_04: We all know that, but priority number one this offseason is getting Baron Morton healthy.
- 11:47SPEAKER_04: So, you know, play through this game.
- 11:50SPEAKER_04: Hopefully, maybe he is a hundred percent.
- 11:52SPEAKER_04: Maybe he just gets through this game and then goes through an extensive rehab process to get him ready for next year, whatever the case may be.
- 11:59SPEAKER_04: Uh, I hope he's I hope he's good.
- 12:01SPEAKER_04: Uh, either way, it'll still be fun to see him in another game.
- 12:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, for sure.
- 12:05SPEAKER_04: Um, speaking of Cal, just quickly, because they have some guys in the transfer portal.
- 12:10SPEAKER_04: Um, looks like their quarterback, Fernando Mendoza, was kind of the starting quarterback from the Oregon State game on.
- 12:17SPEAKER_04: Um, the other two quarterbacks for Cal have since entered the transfer portal, so it looks like this is their guy moving forward.
- 12:22SPEAKER_04: So may have a legitimate quarterback they were playing against, at least, or at least a starter um that has some game time.
- 12:29SPEAKER_04: Uh Jaden Ott is a really good young running back, probably the best one or one of the best ones in the Pac-12.
- 12:36SPEAKER_04: 12, uh 1,260 yards on the year, 11 touchdowns, uh, 13th in college football in yards uh for a running back.
- 12:43SPEAKER_04: So he's legit.
- 12:45SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 12:45SPEAKER_03: So it's a pair of two good running backs in this game, then, huh?
- 12:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, definitely.
- 12:49SPEAKER_04: It'll be kind of a battle on the ground, um, which you know doesn't always call for exciting football.
- 12:55SPEAKER_04: But hey, we'll we'll see.
- 12:56SPEAKER_04: It is whether it's our guy.
- 12:58SPEAKER_04: I think it's pretty exciting.
- 12:59SPEAKER_04: I it's exciting watching Taj Brooks.
- 13:01SPEAKER_04: We'll get to Taj in a second.
- 13:02SPEAKER_04: We'll get yeah, we'll uh everything he does is amazing.
- 13:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah, exactly.
- 13:06SPEAKER_04: And so they got two receivers, Jeremiah Hunter, number three, and number 83, Tron de Grizel.
- 13:12SPEAKER_04: Uh, guys to watch on the wide receiver core for them.
- 13:14SPEAKER_04: But uh that's it, they only have two in the whole team.
- 13:16SPEAKER_04: They have two that made noise, just two that two statistically that made noise.
- 13:21SPEAKER_04: Uh they they run the two wide receiver offense, and I did not see I did not see either guy on the transfer portal um website.
- 13:29SPEAKER_04: So it looks like they're gonna play.
- 13:31SPEAKER_04: This is what I'm going off of here.
- 13:32SPEAKER_04: Uh, I did extensive research, as you can tell, for the radius technology.
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: There's a lot of tape on Cal.
- 13:37SPEAKER_03: So I a lot of tape.
- 13:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, a lot of eyes on the golden.
- 13:42SPEAKER_04: I stayed up, I stayed up until midnight to 1 a.m.
- 13:46SPEAKER_04: to watch my Cal Golden Bears play football this year.
- 13:49SPEAKER_03: I had to have to go buy a Samsung refrigerator so I could watch the Pac-12 network on the water dispenser.
- 13:57SPEAKER_03: That's the only way you can find it.
- 13:58SPEAKER_03: So that's how I had to watch my tape.
- 14:00SPEAKER_04: It set me back a little bit.
- 14:02SPEAKER_04: I'm not gonna lie.
- 14:02SPEAKER_04: That that refrigerator was expensive, but you know, my wife's still.
- 14:09SPEAKER_03: It's antiquated.
- 14:12SPEAKER_04: Hey, Taj Brookson's back.
- 14:15SPEAKER_04: We probably should have started with this.
- 14:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we probably that's that's probably been the opener rather than talking about Cal.
- 14:20SPEAKER_03: Um, but uh, dude, incredible news, completely unexpected.
- 14:25SPEAKER_03: Uh honestly, man.
- 14:26SPEAKER_03: And I was on not gonna lie, I was getting a little nervous because he was giving a lot of a lot of love to the guy transferring out, which is fine.
- 14:33SPEAKER_03: I mean, they he played the O series boys and he's wishing the best.
- 14:35SPEAKER_03: But I was getting nervous from okay, we're expecting to go to the NFL, but if he doesn't, is he thinking about transferring as well?
- 14:42SPEAKER_03: So I was getting a little nervous there for a second, but dude, what a freaking hero! The MVP is returning to Lubbock.
- 14:52SPEAKER_04: Fourth in rushing yards in all of college football this year.
- 14:55SPEAKER_04: I really the only good thing that happened with our offense was Tosh Brooks this season, and him returning is so big in so many different ways because you're just getting a guy who has progressed every single year that he's been at Texas Tech.
- 15:11SPEAKER_04: I mean, look at his overall stat line from his freshman year to this year, where he just went nuts.
- 15:17SPEAKER_04: I mean, nobody I don't think any of us really expected Taj to have the season that he did this year and become the back that he did, but just the durability, the uh the constant breaking tackles.
- 15:30SPEAKER_04: I mean, I think he led uh the nation in broken tackles.
- 15:34SPEAKER_04: Uh, he's just such a weapon to return for you.
- 15:37SPEAKER_04: And now teams are gonna be prepared because they're gonna have a lot of tape on Taj Brooks.
- 15:43SPEAKER_04: This is where we have to help out Taj Brooks here and get him a little help on the receiving core in the passing game and get him a better offensive line, uh, for him to really do what he wants to do at Texas Tech, which is you know, ultimately see it through and and see this program, you know, make something better than an independence bowl.
- 16:04SPEAKER_03: Hey, hey, that's the radiance technology bowl.
- 16:08SPEAKER_04: I'm sorry.
- 16:09SPEAKER_03: But no, man, that that's that's a that's a that's a fabulous point.
- 16:13SPEAKER_03: Um, and you just you get so much experience coming back at that position, especially something that you can rely on so well.
- 16:19SPEAKER_03: Uh he's just such a workhorse.
- 16:21SPEAKER_03: Um, like he liked I like that you touched on the receiving core about how much of a disappointment they were this year, but you can rely on Taj Brooks moving you down the field.
- 16:29SPEAKER_03: Um, so it's just it's so great to have that reliable right reliability back more than anything.
- 16:34SPEAKER_03: And plus, I mean, you're looking at the the the practically the the offensive captain after Baron Barton, I'd say.
- 16:40SPEAKER_03: So the the dude's obviously gonna be a huge leader on the field, and and just obviously an awesome dude, just brings such a fun energy to the team.
- 16:47SPEAKER_03: And I was scared that we were that was the last time we're gonna watch see him in the red and black, but thank God we get to see him tear up some new teams.
- 16:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 16:55SPEAKER_04: We got a whole nother year of Taj, and that is fantastic news.
- 16:59SPEAKER_04: Also got news Caleb Rogers is coming back, which is a good thing because he is, I think, 41 straight starts for Texas Tech on that offensive line.
- 17:09SPEAKER_04: He's played left tackle, he's played right tackle.
- 17:11SPEAKER_04: According to Joey, he's gonna move inside next year and play either a guard or a center position, which uh uh he got feedback from NFL scouts, and they kind of said that's gonna be the area where you're gonna, you know, actually do something here in the NFL.
- 17:25SPEAKER_04: So you need to get some game tape.
- 17:27SPEAKER_04: It's really cool of Joey to you know actually keep that in mind and use that for next season.
- 17:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it really gives you a sense of you know, just care that he cares about his guys and their future.
- 17:39SPEAKER_04: And that's the type of coach you want to play for.
- 17:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 17:42SPEAKER_03: And it also gives the player an incentive to play harder, you know, to to earn that uh recognition from the NFL scouts uh at the position they want you to play in.
- 17:51SPEAKER_03: Because I mean, obviously that means you have to be better than everybody else behind you to be there to replay, uh, you know, potentially replace another player for that spot.
- 17:58SPEAKER_03: So you got to really own it and show up for it.
- 18:01SPEAKER_03: And it's cool with Joey to put that ownership on them.
- 18:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 18:05SPEAKER_04: No, and yeah, no doubt.
- 18:07SPEAKER_04: He kind of it's it's two birds, one stone, right?
- 18:09SPEAKER_04: Like you move the guy, it motivates him.
- 18:12SPEAKER_04: You also might be better as a team, be better as a unit as an offensive line, um, in a different position.
- 18:19SPEAKER_04: Cause you know, those tackle positions are hard, man.
- 18:21SPEAKER_04: When you're when you're a little undersized or you're a little slow, I mean, those tackles, you really you really have to be on it.
- 18:27SPEAKER_04: So if he's moving a guard, great.
- 18:29SPEAKER_04: There's gonna be a lot of turnover on this offensive line next year, which I think is a good thing.
- 18:34SPEAKER_04: Um, you know what, to see some young guys, we've we've seen some portal additions already uh that could be starters next season.
- 18:41SPEAKER_04: So uh, but good to get you know that that seniority, that uh 41 straight starts.
- 18:46SPEAKER_04: It's hard to get that experience in college football these days, uh, especially with just the same team.
- 18:51SPEAKER_04: I mean, Caleb Rogers has been here since day one.
- 18:53SPEAKER_04: So um it's good to get both Taj and Caleb back.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: I mean, especially at that position, too.
- 18:58SPEAKER_03: And it's it's it's probably our biggest sore spot on this entire in this entire program right now.
- 19:02SPEAKER_03: And I mean, I know you and I have harped on it so much this uh this past season.
- 19:06SPEAKER_03: So just to have that you know reliability back is going to be important, that veteran C, that leadership.
- 19:13SPEAKER_03: So I mean, I'll take any good news we can get on that line.
- 19:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, definitely.
- 19:18SPEAKER_04: So before we get into the additions we have coming into Texas Tech, the guys that have committed, and a lot of committed today, in fact.
- 19:25SPEAKER_04: So glad we've waited to record till Wednesday to get some of this stuff out.
- 19:29SPEAKER_04: But uh, let's just run down the list real quick of guys that are gonna move on, that are in the transfer portal that were on Texas Tech last year, uh, and no longer going to be.
- 19:39SPEAKER_04: Wide receiver room, you you're taking a beating.
- 19:41SPEAKER_04: Miles Price, Jaron Bradley, uh Nehemiah Martinez, JJ Sparkman, Loick Fungi, Tyler King.
- 19:48SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah, a lot a lot of guys leaving.
- 19:50SPEAKER_04: I I think we all saw that coming.
- 19:53SPEAKER_04: Uh maybe not maybe not a Miles Price leaving, but some of these other guys.
- 19:58SPEAKER_04: Duran Bradley?
- 19:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think I I you Loick Fungi.
- 20:04SPEAKER_04: The way that this wide receiver room did not produce and did not do what they needed to do, and blame it on Kitley, blame it on whatever, blame it on the receivers not giving the effort that they probably should have.
- 20:16SPEAKER_04: Uh, blame the system, what whoever you want to blame, they didn't produce this year, and they're it's not helping them, and it's not helping us.
- 20:25SPEAKER_04: And so the state of college football, the first go-to is to transfer and find somewhere different.
- 20:31SPEAKER_04: So uh none of these surprise me, to be honest.
- 20:34SPEAKER_03: Steven, um, you know, neither neither same with me.
- 20:37SPEAKER_03: And I think as Texas Tech fans and in today's college football, would it be fair to say that out of literally any position group in all of college football, the wide receiver group is the one you're most okay with having the most turnover every year?
- 20:56SPEAKER_04: Well, from just generally generally, yeah.
- 21:00SPEAKER_04: I mean, I guess so.
- 21:01SPEAKER_04: Um, that yeah, that are DBs, I guess.
- 21:04SPEAKER_04: Um but yeah, I think from what you the product you saw this year from Texas Tech, it's definitely the room that you're most okay with losing guys.
- 21:14SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 21:15SPEAKER_04: There was a clear just disappointment and did not live up to expectations.
- 21:21SPEAKER_04: And again, blame the player, blame the coaching staff, blame whoever.
- 21:25SPEAKER_04: The room did not do well and was the most disappointing.
- 21:28SPEAKER_03: But pound for pounds and gym to gym, uh do you not think that perhaps the transfer portal is most valuable for wide receivers than many other positions?
- 21:41SPEAKER_04: It could be.
- 21:42SPEAKER_04: I I it I don't know if it's easy to say that if it's offensive line, if it's wide receiver, it just depends on the guy, man.
- 21:49SPEAKER_04: It depends on the player and who they're going to and how that school plans to use them, um, and everything of that nature.
- 21:57SPEAKER_04: There's so many different factors involved.
- 21:58SPEAKER_04: I don't know if you can say a specific position is like the best to go into the portal as, you know?
- 22:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I guess I guess the point that the it's I guess I've been having a hard time articulate it.
- 22:10SPEAKER_03: I guess I think what I'm trying to say is with the transfer portal with wide receivers, I feel like you can more easily talk yourself into liking additions in that group than probably any others.
- 22:23SPEAKER_03: Because you'll be like, wow look at these tangibles, look what this guy brings, look at what people are overlooking with this guy.
- 22:28SPEAKER_03: You know, look at his size, look at look what he's got.
- 22:31SPEAKER_03: More so than say like an alignment where that you're just kind of like I mean a transfer alignment.
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: I don't I don't know.
- 22:37SPEAKER_03: Explain like from New Mexico State, do I get excited about this kind of thing?
- 22:40SPEAKER_03: You know what I mean?
- 22:40SPEAKER_03: So yeah, that's true.
- 22:42SPEAKER_04: I mean you can always look at a six foot four wide receiver and be like oh that guy could be something.
- 22:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah you know yeah so I mean yeah yeah it's yeah okay I kind of get what yeah I kind of get what you're saying but I just think specifically to Texas Tech with how this wide receiver core produced you're most okay with losing from that position group.
- 23:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah with Taj coming back I I think it's all clear now Cameron Valdez entered the transfer portal um obviously that is probably a direct correlation to Taj coming back which is just fine.
- 23:16SPEAKER_04: I mean you don't like to lose a guy like Cameron.
- 23:18SPEAKER_04: I think Cameron's a a good back um at times and he showed a lot of flashes uh showed a lot of weak points mentally I think this year as well um but you know it's just it's it's he's put in a tough spot because he's been with the team for this will be his third year I believe and didn't play much because Taj was as good as he was and the same guy's gonna come back I mean you're just not gonna get as many snaps and as many reps and you're gonna try your luck elsewhere and that's fine.
- 23:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah you don't you don't as a fan you don't hurt from this one just because of the sheer volume that Taj received you know like we I remember before the season started that you know you you we were having discussion about Taj Brooks and uh it was said like that he's not a one back guy but he kind of really played turns out he is yeah very much is he played that way and obviously that won't change next season there's no reason to believe it would so you you really can't believe you really can't uh blame the guy for for just get some get some eyes get some get some playing time you know yeah no doubt you know go go try your luck this isn't gonna be a huge loss I think in in the long run you have a couple good young players behind Taj Bryson Donnell Anquan Willis um guys again that didn't get a lot of reps this year but at least Donnell has shown some stuff in the 2022 season uh Willis is a big back he's six feet uh he's a big boy so um I don't know maybe you know it's good to have depth at that position I hope both those guys come back and uh potentially you know set them up for the future to be the Taj replacement after next year.
- 24:52SPEAKER_04: So right yeah um I'm not I'm I'm just fine with the running back room right now I think it's safe to say uh very fine with yeah with yeah exactly so um tight ends Jaden York entered the transfer portal um had some moments this season again uh you know had that spitting incident I forgot what team that was against but yeah um that was a whole thing didn't play much really after that um it this isn't a huge loss to be quite honest with you I know we're losing Baylor Cup we're losing Henry Teeter but we also gained two tight ends from the portal that we will talk about so uh this one's not a huge loss in my opinion.
- 25:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah neither do I I mean it's it's a lot of us probably won't really recognize that name just from the you know the lack of production we got out of them.
- 25:38SPEAKER_03: So it's not it's not a huge L compared to the other tight ends from graduation.
- 25:42SPEAKER_04: Absolutely uh the position group right behind wide receivers that I'm most okay with losing guys is the offensive line and that's the second most players that we lost uh when you're just breaking it down by position group.
- 25:54SPEAKER_04: So um Landon Peterson Monroe Mills Seth Martin uh all entered the transfer portal.
- 26:00SPEAKER_04: Uh Monroe Mills was your starting left tackle pretty much the entire year.
- 26:04SPEAKER_04: Landon Peterson was in and out of the lineup due to injuries um Seth Martin didn't play he's a young guy.
- 26:10SPEAKER_04: So uh uh Monroe Mills a little surprising he had a lot of penalties this year um again left tackle is the hardest position on the offensive line so I feel for him on that aspect but um you know definitely not a guy that is irreplaceable or you know anything of that nature.
- 26:30SPEAKER_03: Well I mean while we were recapping the football season I think it's it's well what is it what what would you say this or the wide receiver group was the most disappointing of the year.
- 26:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah so that was offensive line and wide receiver that was the most disappointing it's hard to have much heartburn about this.
- 26:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah because if if we have an amazing if we had an amazing year like lock locked down our quarterback was never getting touched then yeah but it's just that's that's not the reality we live in.
- 26:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah that's what that's what I said last week when I was talking about you know are Monroe Mills and Caleb Rogers are those guys like can we replace them?
- 27:02SPEAKER_04: Is it fine like you know there's just a lot of question marks so again this these three leaving doesn't affect me much.
- 27:10SPEAKER_04: Uh you know we wish them best in the future we wish all these guys best in the future yes um unless they go to a Big 12 school or UT or AM or anything like that.
- 27:18SPEAKER_04: So there's conditions there's conditions we all know this fine friends another surprising one and this is the last one I that I know of at least punter was gonna be the guy to replace our guy Austin McNamara he's out of eligibility unfortunately we get to see him one more time here before he you know makes his uh makes his NFL career happen but Brooke Onre who was supposed to be the guy to replace McNamara uh entered the transfer portal kind of suddenly and when we talk about additions it'll be just fine but uh it was definitely surprising at first yeah why why like you're about to have the position why I don't know I may go for it too much on fourth down I'm out of here he's like I'm not doing this I don't get to put enough yeah like what the heck no I mean you look at the uh the schools that have offered him since um you know you can kind of tell not he's not a hot topic hot uh you know person that that is out there and that's based on not playing I don't want to disparage the kid he hasn't set foot on the football field yet and he was he's coming behind a legend so probably the best in school history yeah so you know I wish him the best hopefully he finds a good uh a good landing spot but it definitely surprising until we saw some of these transfer portal additions right right at this point it's one two three four five six seven eight nine ten as of right now potentially 11 or 12 come the next couple days but uh as of right now transfer additions here Texas Tech Red Raiders for 2024 where do you want to start you want to start at the tight end position yeah sure Jalen Conyers Arizona State this was a big one tech beat out Oklahoma and they beat out Georgia that is the uh the word on the street is that those two big schools were vying for this guy out of Arizona State um and Texas Tech won and they got a tight end that is going to be alongside Mason Tharp next year and uh that's a big get you know I mean we had we had a we had a big thing going a couple of big things going for us with this dude.
- 29:35SPEAKER_03: One, we have an empty tight end room and so you immediately get to walk in and have a pretty good bet at getting to the starting position.
- 29:42SPEAKER_03: And two, he's a West Texas boy.
- 29:44SPEAKER_03: He grew up outside of Lubbock.
- 29:45SPEAKER_03: So he should have been here from the start.
- 29:46SPEAKER_03: So he's coming back home and uh playing for the probably for the team he probably grew up cheering for.
- 29:51SPEAKER_03: So we have we probably had two good things going for us there.
- 29:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah for sure.
- 29:56SPEAKER_04: Uh didn't do a lot last year uh based on Arizona State not being a good football team and based on uh I think he was dealing with a few injuries but uh if you look at some of the highlights I mean he's he's athletic as heck he's six foot three he's a big big you know body tight end yeah that uh will hopefully give you some production in the receiving game and if not on the on the blocking end.
- 30:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah no absolutely and I but OU fans seem pretty distraught that they lost them too they're like you're gonna believe it.
- 30:25SPEAKER_04: So I'm glad fans are in their fields this portal season they're not in our good portal season.
- 30:31SPEAKER_04: I think I think they've lost their entire offensive line.
- 30:35SPEAKER_03: Oh that's that's sad.
- 30:37SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry.
- 30:37SPEAKER_04: Oh no yeah I feel real bad for the Sooners over here.
- 30:40SPEAKER_04: Oh no we did get another tight end uh we basically took from both Arizona schools uh Alex Lines coming out of the Wildcats coming out of your boy Jed Fish uh his team my boy coming to Texas Tech I don't know much about this guy to be quite honest with you I don't think he had a huge impact on Arizona this year but again depth is necessary for the tight end position so we'll take him yeah I mean he's a former three star uh you know playing at a power five school uh a little a little dirty of us be robbing two Big 12 schools at this point as we were just saying this and here we are saying you can do this it's a dirty game man the transfer portal you know we're all hypocrites when it comes to the transfer portal we can all adjust fair and love and war in transfer portal yeah but I again depth piece we'll take it if he's something more than that fantastic um we got a quarterback transfer portal yeah tell me about that cameron brown out of West Georgia so FCS I believe if not N Aia maybe I don't know uh it's community college this was this was a weird one I don't think any of us really saw it coming and I I think we talked about this a little bit when we were talking about the quarterback room for next year and looking forward but you did need to add another quarterback like it can't just be Baron Jake Strong and Will Hammond like it can't just be those three so uh uh one MVP of his league last year at West Georgia seems to be a dual threat kind of guy um still young I think he's a sophomore so got some years to develop and you know if if Zach Kidley sees something and if Joey McGuire sees something I'm absolutely fine with adding a little more competition to that room for maybe the QB2 spot.
- 32:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah I think that's exactly why we brought him on um I I think this guy is a placeholder while uh the younger guy is strong and Hammond developing the system uh I I I really don't expect this guy to start but I think the reason why you got this guy is because you convinced the kid playing at the community who's probably it was probably too good to be playing at the community college level to come fight for a spot at the P5.
- 32:57SPEAKER_03: So I think I think that's how you reeled him in.
- 32:59SPEAKER_03: So he's probably hungry for trying to sneak his way into that spot but I don't see it happening right now.
- 33:05SPEAKER_03: But uh maybe maybe I'd be happy to prove wrong if he's a stud, right?
- 33:08SPEAKER_04: Absolutely I mean it's a low risk, you know, high reward kind of situation here.
- 33:13SPEAKER_04: So uh we all know Baron Morton's QB1 going into next year.
- 33:16SPEAKER_04: Uh we just uh you know it this is mostly about a potential QB2 battle here but um wide receiver we got a commit today Florida transfer Caleb Douglas six foot three 180 pounds he's uh a little light but um definitely has shown flashes of being good dealt with an injury that knocked him out of a lot of last year that probably led to his decision to enter the transfer portal and um if you're good enough for Florida you're good enough for me that's what I'll say yeah no absolutely and he some great highlight films that were popping out from it so uh again you you get an experienced guy that's played at the highest level of college football um it's hard to be upset about that kind of ad.
- 33:57SPEAKER_04: Yep definitely we have not secured this guy as of 747 p.m on Wednesday but they are rumored there's a crystal ball for Washington State wide receiver Josh Kelly to potentially be a red raider.
- 34:13SPEAKER_04: Apparently it's between us and Notre Dame right now 923 yards eight touchdowns last season for Wazoo some crazy highlight films go look him up on YouTube.
- 34:23SPEAKER_04: Um dude would be a stud and a probably the best get from the transfer portal so far if he does in fact commit to Texas Tech.
- 34:32SPEAKER_03: Yes it looks like to be a huge coup I apparently that everybody is is in this guy's telephone right now.
- 34:38SPEAKER_03: So um I I love the way we're been mixing rewheeling and deal in the in the transportal right now and I don't see any reason to doubt that this crystal ball will come to a closure with us.
- 34:48SPEAKER_03: So I would love to get this dude just to have that immediate impact player at the wide receiver core one that you know would be an impact.
- 34:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah definitely so hopefully it comes true uh hopefully we beat out the Notre Dame fighting Irish for this guy but uh as of right now just one wide receiver commit and that is Caleb Douglas um got a couple defensive back commits one javon jackson from Fairmont State and one Devin Cromwell from Guff uh college in Canada which weird uh all Canadian all Canadian coming to Texas tech down to Lubbock you know um we are so cooked the Canada to Lubbock pipeline is deep I thought the Keystone got blocked I you know I I'm sorry I don't I don't pay attention to politics but dude we're so cooked we're just talking about how good things were going in the transport portal now we're adding a Canadian what's going on here man what's going on I don't know what to expect out of either of these two guys uh coming from Canadian football and then coming from Fairmont State so again depth piece potentially I don't know we'll see let's see offensive line we got two guys yeah uh both bring a different sort of um I don't know but both bring something they're gonna bring something uh one guy Vinny Sciur from Toledo highly coveted offensive guard out of the portal started 33 games past three seasons at left guard for Toledo who had a good offensive line I think he was the number four rated inside lineman from uh uh from on three or one of the recruiting websites so this is a big get this is a guy who could be a starter for you day one this is probably this might be like the most important get of the whole transfer portal so far.
- 36:46SPEAKER_03: Um especially uh off that O line that Toledo that Tuleto Toledo O-line is no joke um so I'm really glad we got this guy I mean again another coup we have really been doing awesome in the transfer portal like it's really no doubt that we have some freaking recruiters on the staff so I'm I'm glad to know how to to talk about the talk to the college guys as much as the high school ones as well.
- 37:07SPEAKER_04: Definitely not a lot of big like school names but I think the talent and the actual like what people are saying about these players is is a really good sign for what's to come.
- 37:18SPEAKER_04: I mean Toledo Toledo is probably a little better than uh what's this guilt what was it galute good guilt list guelf and and whatever other cool media college so Vermont State baby um yeah oh another one Jamarian Gooch which by the way fantastic name fantastic name fantastic name from Garden City Community College the thing about this kid six foot eight three hundred and ten pounds um that's all you need to know he was previously at Missouri ended up in community college for some reason or another I don't know why but hey he made it out of Garden City and he is here at Texas Tech and he's six foot eight 310 pounds I will take that the gooch the gooch my man we shall see what he ends up bringing um defensive lineman Danny Saley I believe is how you say his name another community college guy from Hutchinson Community College.
- 38:17SPEAKER_04: Oh you know don't know don't know you have to replace a lot on that defensive line Tony Bradford Jalen Hutchings are gone miles cole's gone um so hey another defensive lineman does not hurt I think Joey is really investing in who he has currently on the defensive line.
- 38:34SPEAKER_04: Remember guys like Isaac Smith are going to come back he was out all this season with an injury um you know you got Joseph you got some really good pieces there on that defensive line they're young but they're good and so bringing in another another guy like this is a a depth piece.
- 38:51SPEAKER_03: I I think I I think that's the last community college guy you're about to list um out of this group and I think one thing to maybe keep in mind to keep the vibes high about seeing those name those words against a guy's name is Bill Snyder built his entire dynasty on Jico guys.
- 39:10SPEAKER_03: So let's hope we kind of snag a bit of that magic and plug into Lubick I guess that's kind of how I'm seeing it right now because it it's it's it's a kind of a long list with C C next to the name typically here.
- 39:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah I mean we'll see we'll see that obviously they have some sort of strategy here uh I'm not gonna go through community college tape I'm not gonna do it so um you know I won't do it I can't do it I can't I cannot do it I'm not going to do it I refuse uh last guy to mention punter we have a punter for next year Jack Burgess from Weber State he's an Aussie he's an Aussie he's an Aussie Australian and those guys are good those guys are good punters they know how to they know how to kick the ball they know how to kick the ball um weeber state I saw they had the most um like snaps over the punter's head in one game last season they had four in one game where the long snapper literally just snapped it into the end zone and way over the punter's head uh so he was clearly ready to get the hell out of weaver state and uh despite his despite his long snapper one of the highest rated punters and one of the longest averages of punts um this past season so uh this is your McNamara replacement Steven would you say he wanted to get out back to Lubbock?
- 40:32SPEAKER_04: Well he wasn't at Lubbock at the but I I get what you're trying to do here.
- 40:36SPEAKER_03: Would you say that we're trying to foster his talents in Lubbock foster okay enough enough from you yeah this you're cut off I'm only gonna talk for the remainder of this podcast you're in podcast jail right now mute as Mike Jamie mute as Mike that's it that's your transfer portal editions those are guys that you could potentially see uh make a big impact for Texas Tech or if not be a depth so uh as of right now who are you most excited about uh probably the Toledo offensive lineman you took my answer either him or or Conyers I mean uh a lot of people seem hyped up on Conyers a lot of people said no report a lot more by the way yeah a lot more than you and me are excited about Conyers so uh I hope he stays healthy I hope he's uh a receiving piece on the tight end I always love it when we get the tight ends involved in the receiving game um but we'll just see we'll have to see absolutely all right man you ready to move on from football I I suppose so basketball basketball bad news it's my favorite sport Devin Cambridge out for the year knee injury um thanks for starting us off right buddy I I mean you have to talk about it first and foremost because it's a it's devastating to this team it's it sucks because he's such a huge part of this team and you saw early on how good this team was with Cambridge playing the five uh he's undersized he was six foot he is six he didn't die by the way he's he's he's fine uh he will hopefully get a medical uh red shirt or something and be able to play for Texas Tech next year but um it's a it's a big loss you you can't replace a guy like that uh very easily at least so uh McCasslin and company have a lot to think about um with replacing Devin Cambridge uh and yeah it it sucks well I mean it dude it's just it's just heartbreaking the season has barely even started and he's out for the entire year like conference play hasn't even begun and the dude can't even uh get to play on the big time so uh just we're hoping for a speedy recovery for him man um and look forward to seeing him back on the court as soon as possible definitely hopefully next year for Texas Tech um but yeah get healthy man we are we're rooting for you how do you replace Stefan Cambridge what is coach McCassling gonna do we've only had one game since the injury against Oral Roberts which we did win 82 to 76 Texas Tech moves to seven and two on the year but sorry KO sorry KO uh how do you replace Stefan Cambridge Bob Jennings seems to be the guy take a lot of these minutes and unfortunately for a lot of us Bob has not looked good to start Steven this is my guy what are you talking about this is my guy and I hate seeing him you know struggle but man he missed three right at the bucket I mean they were layups dude it was it was like you could have made them I think what well let's not get crazy let's not get carried away I legitimately don't think I can make a layup homie like just legit I think he I think it's a confidence thing with him and I I with me or him
- 44:00SPEAKER_04: Both.
- 44:04SPEAKER_04: Both.
- 44:05SPEAKER_04: Clearly, I mean, you know, we'll see it's a work in progress.
- 44:09SPEAKER_04: He's he's clearly got a little bit going on.
- 44:12SPEAKER_04: He's also recovering from an injury, uh, according to some of the people on Twitter that know some things and know a lot more than you and me.
- 44:19SPEAKER_04: Um, so it may just be a process, but uh, you know, Jennings is gonna be the guy to step up, he's gonna be your backup big playing those minutes when Warren has to sit.
- 44:30SPEAKER_04: Uh, he's gonna be your backup five.
- 44:32SPEAKER_04: No more Devin Cambridge at the five.
- 44:34SPEAKER_04: You're gonna have to play him.
- 44:36SPEAKER_04: Darien Williams might play some minutes at the five here, uh, potentially using Ameli Yalaho, potentially even playing Kyron Lindsay.
- 44:44SPEAKER_04: I mean, I I know the team wanted to redshirt, I think, Kyron Lindsay.
- 44:48SPEAKER_04: He played in a game, though.
- 44:50SPEAKER_04: Like he got in at the very end of the Omaha game.
- 44:53SPEAKER_04: And I think in basketball, that burns your redshirt.
- 44:56SPEAKER_04: Like as soon as you step on the court, like it burns your redshirt, even if it's for two minutes.
- 45:02SPEAKER_04: So I don't know.
- 45:03SPEAKER_04: I don't know the plan here.
- 45:05SPEAKER_03: Well, I mean, I guess that's why we're not paid the big bucks.
- 45:08SPEAKER_03: And granted Castlin is it's it is really frustrating to be placed in this situation wherever this team has been trying to find its identity the whole year, and now a huge wrench has been thrown into that plan.
- 45:22SPEAKER_03: And granted, it's the beginning of the year of a year one of a whole new team and regime.
- 45:26SPEAKER_03: So there's going to be bumps, but this is a big ass bump.
- 45:29SPEAKER_03: So um, I really hope that the team can find a way to string together some success, uh, even despite the obstacle here.
- 45:38SPEAKER_03: Um, but man, it's gonna be interesting to see how we adjust the game plan.
- 45:41SPEAKER_04: Yeah, definitely.
- 45:42SPEAKER_04: So keep you know, there's gonna be adjustments.
- 45:44SPEAKER_04: We have, I think, three more games until Conference game or conference play starts.
- 45:48SPEAKER_03: Four, sir.
- 45:49SPEAKER_04: Four, there you go.
- 45:50SPEAKER_04: Even better.
- 45:51SPEAKER_04: You have an extra game to just get your lineups right.
- 45:55SPEAKER_03: Texas Arlington, Sam Houston, North Alabama, North Alabama.
- 46:00SPEAKER_04: That's a toughie right there.
- 46:02SPEAKER_04: I've been saying it for years.
- 46:03SPEAKER_04: Um, so yeah, uh Oral Roberts game, a little close, too close for comfort at home.
- 46:09SPEAKER_04: Um 8276 again, the score.
- 46:14SPEAKER_04: Or are you what what what I was gonna ask?
- 46:17SPEAKER_03: I'll I was driving a school bus while this game was on.
- 46:19SPEAKER_03: Um so could you could you give me a vibe rundown here?
- 46:23SPEAKER_04: Oral Roberts shot the hell out of the ball.
- 46:26SPEAKER_04: They made so many stupid shots.
- 46:28SPEAKER_04: I don't know how like lots of KOs, like threes, man.
- 46:33SPEAKER_04: I mean, they were I it's it's unfortunate.
- 46:36SPEAKER_04: I am a Spurs fan.
- 46:37SPEAKER_04: They've they're on a 17-game losing streak, they're horrible.
- 46:40SPEAKER_04: And I just had to watch I had to watch their game against the freaking Rockets, who sucked, by the way, in that game.
- 46:46SPEAKER_04: But the Spurs shot five for 41 from three-point line.
- 46:50SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, dude.
- 46:51SPEAKER_04: Horrible.
- 46:52SPEAKER_04: It was horrible.
- 46:52SPEAKER_04: I watched the whole freaking game, and it was like a new knife in my brain every single time, and then I have to go watch freaking Oral Roberts go crazy from the three-point line the very next day, and I was I I was beside myself, but we won regardless, which is a good thing.
- 47:10SPEAKER_04: You learn things from winning, you'd rather learn things from winning than from losing.
- 47:15SPEAKER_04: Um, so but yeah, clearly a lot for this team to figure out with the loss of Cambridge.
- 47:20SPEAKER_03: More importantly, what do we think of the first name Oral?
- 47:26SPEAKER_04: The most important topic of discussion today.
- 47:29SPEAKER_04: Uh you know, what do you what are you gonna do?
- 47:32SPEAKER_04: I like his popcorn.
- 47:34SPEAKER_04: Somebody that's Orville.
- 47:41SPEAKER_04: I like Oral's popcorn.
- 47:43SPEAKER_04: That's great.
- 47:44SPEAKER_04: Uh that's a the university is named after a guy, right?
- 47:48SPEAKER_04: Like there was a guy named No, it's a guy named Oral Roberts.
- 47:52SPEAKER_04: That's a dude.
- 47:53SPEAKER_04: That's it's gotta be.
- 47:54SPEAKER_04: That's why I'm asking the question.
- 47:56SPEAKER_04: Things were different back in the day, man.
- 47:59SPEAKER_04: Things were different.
- 48:00SPEAKER_04: Imagine naming dog.
- 48:03SPEAKER_04: They were freaks back in the day, naming their kids or my god.
- 48:08SPEAKER_04: Uh you know, what do you what do you get into?
- 48:12SPEAKER_04: A little small religious school in Oklahoma.
- 48:14SPEAKER_04: The oral bobs.
- 48:21SPEAKER_04: The oral bobs.
- 48:24SPEAKER_03: This is how you know the podcast is going on too long.
- 48:26SPEAKER_04: Off the rails.
- 48:27SPEAKER_04: Off the rails right now.
- 48:30SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 48:31SPEAKER_04: Lady Raiders.
- 48:32SPEAKER_04: 11-0.
- 48:34SPEAKER_04: Uh, they just beat Incarnate Word, unfortunately, for Incarnate Word, 76 to 35.
- 48:40SPEAKER_04: The hometown heroes of Incarnate Word over here in SA.
- 48:44SPEAKER_04: Our Cardinals got a beatdown from the Lady Raiders.
- 48:47SPEAKER_04: They're 11-0, dude.
- 48:48SPEAKER_04: They're good.
- 48:49SPEAKER_04: Krista got that thing going, dude.
- 48:51SPEAKER_04: She got that thing going.
- 48:53SPEAKER_04: And that's all we've really said the past few episodes is Krista Curly got that thing going.
- 48:58SPEAKER_04: But Bailey Maupin, Jazz Shavers leading the way, both averaging 15 points a game, uh, leading the team uh on the offensive side.
- 49:07SPEAKER_04: Uh Maupin also has 48 assists on the year, which is nuts for playing 11 games.
- 49:12SPEAKER_04: So shout out to all of them.
- 49:15SPEAKER_04: They're leading the way, leading the charge.
- 49:17SPEAKER_04: Um, Kyla Freelon also giving tech huge boost, averaging 10 and 8 uh rebounds a game.
- 49:24SPEAKER_04: She's been fun to watch.
- 49:26SPEAKER_04: I've only caught a few of the games, I'm gonna be honest with you.
- 49:28SPEAKER_04: But um, when I'm watching them, Kyla Freelon is always doing something good, uh, hustling, grabbing rebounds, setting picks, you know, moving, all that good stuff.
- 49:38SPEAKER_04: And the team runs deep, man.
- 49:39SPEAKER_04: 10 players averaging at least 10 minutes a game for the Lady Raiders right now.
- 49:43SPEAKER_04: So it's uh Krista Gerlich is using the entirety of this team uh to beat up on uh what you know, it's a non-conference schedule.
- 49:51SPEAKER_04: I don't I don't know if they played necessarily anybody, you know, fantastic, but 11-0 is 11-0.
- 49:58SPEAKER_03: Oh, absolutely.
- 49:59SPEAKER_03: Do you think that sort of uh strategy holds as we get closer to conference play, or do you think she tightens up?
- 50:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, she naturally you'll tighten up when you start playing teams that are really good, and the Big 12 has really good women's basketball teams, um, you know, night in, night out, you're gonna play your best players as much as possible.
- 50:16SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, you're you're gonna see less minutes from you know the the the bench people.
- 50:22SPEAKER_04: And so um, this is always the case kind of early on in the season.
- 50:25SPEAKER_04: You want to see your lineups, you want to see different players play with different lineups and everything of that nature.
- 50:29SPEAKER_04: So um, yeah, you'll see that tied enough probably to like an eight to seven person rotation come conference play.
- 50:35SPEAKER_03: Like it's but it's good to get the experience for those folks because I mean like look at we were just talking about the men's basketball team, you know, season ending injuries, next person up.
- 50:42SPEAKER_03: So uh it's just good to get that experience.
- 50:44SPEAKER_03: Can't replace that.
- 50:45SPEAKER_03: So uh love what she got that thing going, as we like to say on this podcast, and her fits are still on on point.
- 50:50SPEAKER_03: So uh she's hitting all the important stuff here.
- 50:54SPEAKER_04: Killing it.
- 50:55SPEAKER_04: Lady Raiders undefeated 100%.
- 50:57SPEAKER_04: Absolutely killing it.
- 50:58SPEAKER_04: All right, dude.
- 50:59SPEAKER_04: I think that's it.
- 51:00SPEAKER_04: You got anything else?
- 51:01SPEAKER_03: Uh no, I don't know.
- 51:03SPEAKER_03: I mean, I think I think all we have left, dude, is a shout out to the old alma mater.
- 51:09SPEAKER_04: Oh man.
- 51:10SPEAKER_03: It is Smithson Valley Rangers.
- 51:14SPEAKER_03: It is state championship time in Texas, football-wise.
- 51:18SPEAKER_03: And high school football.
- 51:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, high school football.
- 51:21SPEAKER_03: Uh, us being the high school heroes we are.
- 51:23SPEAKER_03: We just wanted to give uh props to our alma mater, Smithson Valley High School, out there in Spring Branch.
- 51:29SPEAKER_03: And uh look at them, man.
- 51:31SPEAKER_03: In the state champ in the state title for the first time in over 20 years.
- 51:34SPEAKER_03: So for five A.
- 51:35SPEAKER_04: 5A state championship playing Alito.
- 51:38SPEAKER_04: Uh, I looked at some things prior to this.
- 51:40SPEAKER_04: Uh Smithson Valley, according to the high school experts, expected to lose by 30 plus points in this game.
- 51:47SPEAKER_04: Oh, okay.
- 51:48SPEAKER_04: So Alito won last year.
- 51:49SPEAKER_04: I think they won like 14 or something 5A championships.
- 51:53SPEAKER_04: So this is a freaking powerhouse of 5A that the Smithson Valley Rangers are gonna play in Jerry World at T T Stadium.
- 52:00SPEAKER_04: Um, shout out, shout out, Coach Larry.
- 52:03SPEAKER_03: He made it that far, and it's a in a comment itself.
- 52:07SPEAKER_04: So Larry Hill is gonna get his first state championship.
- 52:10SPEAKER_04: He's been at Smithson Valley for 31 years.
- 52:16SPEAKER_04: God King Larry Hill of Zero Bulver East Room Branch, zero state championships, but he's gonna do it this year, damn it.
- 52:24SPEAKER_03: All right, shot on SV.
- 52:27SPEAKER_03: All the people from like Katie and like the what it's what's what are some of the biggest powerhouses in lake, whatever.
- 52:35SPEAKER_03: Lake Travis, Travis, yeah.
- 52:37SPEAKER_03: All the DFW schools.
- 52:39SPEAKER_03: Listen to these dweebs, these yeah, backwoods hicks.
- 52:44SPEAKER_03: But uh any anywho, good props to them, man.
- 52:47SPEAKER_04: Shout out SV.
- 52:48SPEAKER_03: Um, all right, man, song of the week.
- 52:50SPEAKER_03: Go ahead.
- 52:51SPEAKER_03: All right, all right, song of the week, dude.
- 52:53SPEAKER_03: Man, we are we are going to the Independence Bowl in Shreeport, Louisiana.
- 52:59SPEAKER_04: Where everybody wants to be.
- 53:01SPEAKER_03: There's one song to play, and Texas Tech Football beat me to this already, but it is Shreveport by the Turnpike Troubadours from their debut album.
- 53:12SPEAKER_03: There's not a more appropriate song to bust out right here and now.
- 53:17SPEAKER_03: Shreeport, Turnpike Troubadours, OG's.
- 53:21SPEAKER_03: Let's go.
- 53:32SPEAKER_07: Well, you can learn some things down there they don't teach in school.
- 53:40SPEAKER_04: Listen, I've been to Streetport.
- 53:43SPEAKER_04: It's not great.
- 53:45SPEAKER_04: It's not great.
- 53:46SPEAKER_04: If you are a degenerate gambler, you're gonna have a hell of a time in Shreveport.
- 53:50SPEAKER_04: But that's about it.
- 53:51SPEAKER_04: I mean, I think it's gotten better over the years.
- 53:55SPEAKER_04: Uh, but you know, cool.
- 53:58SPEAKER_04: I don't I don't know why the hell they wrote a song about streetport.
- 54:02SPEAKER_03: Well, I mean, when we listen to the lyrics, you understand it completely.
- 54:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's fair.
- 54:06SPEAKER_03: That's fair.
- 54:07SPEAKER_03: They're not talking about how clean and professional it is.
- 54:13SPEAKER_04: I don't I don't want every place to be clean and professional.
- 54:15SPEAKER_03: It's just degeneracy the whole song through.
- 54:17SPEAKER_04: No, there you go.
- 54:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, degeneracy.
- 54:20SPEAKER_04: I hope the boys don't get in too much trouble, uh, being in tree port, but um yeah, man, that's a good choice.
- 54:26SPEAKER_04: That is a good song.
- 54:27SPEAKER_04: Turnpike does not disappoint.
- 54:29SPEAKER_04: Um, my song of the week, our buddy Clay will be proud of me.
- 54:33SPEAKER_04: We have not done him yet.
- 54:34SPEAKER_04: We talk about him all the time in our group text, but we have not done our boy Charles yet.
- 54:40SPEAKER_04: Charles Wesley Godwin, Skyline Blues from his newest album is going to be my song of the week.
- 54:47SPEAKER_04: Jammin, listen, you guys got me into him.
- 54:50SPEAKER_04: Like, I'm not gonna lie.
- 54:51SPEAKER_04: They y'all kept talking about this Charles guy from West Virginia, Chuck, uh, Chuck, old Chuck.
- 54:57SPEAKER_04: Uh, he's fantastic, dude.
- 54:59SPEAKER_04: This song is straight up, it's like campfire music mixed with like an Irish shanty.
- 55:03SPEAKER_04: Like, it's like all it's really good evening listening.
- 55:08SPEAKER_04: You get a glass of whiskey and you're just listening to Chuck.
- 55:11SPEAKER_04: Uh, that's a it's a banger of a song that's Charles Wesley Godwin, Skyline Blues.
- 55:17SPEAKER_01: Skyline sure looks pretty.
- 55:21SPEAKER_01: On nice like blues.
- 55:25SPEAKER_01: I'd say it was something if I could breathe and home you close to me.
- 55:33SPEAKER_03: Great pick, man, and certainly a guy that deserves it, dude.
- 55:36SPEAKER_03: Just an absolute stark man of Appalachia spreading that sound of music across the country.
- 55:41SPEAKER_03: It's so good to hear, man.
- 55:42SPEAKER_03: And I'm excited, I've I don't think I've heard this one.
- 55:44SPEAKER_03: I I've only I've only barely listened to the new album, so I'm excited to uh dive into this one here.
- 55:49SPEAKER_04: Definitely just uh by the campfire type of music, a little Drew Kennedy-ish, you know.
- 55:54SPEAKER_04: Yes, just listen.
- 55:55SPEAKER_04: It's just vibing, just vibes, man.
- 55:57SPEAKER_04: It's good stuff.
- 55:58SPEAKER_04: We like vibes, we like vibes.
- 56:00SPEAKER_04: All right, good luck to Texas Tech in the uh highly coveted Radiance Technology Independence Bowl.
- 56:07SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, keep grinding on basketball.
