- 0:23chickens. Hey everybody.
- 0:28Good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30Ooh, where the girls are currently enjoying bananas and
- 0:34shredded zucchini and squash some hot peppers because they
- 0:39seem to really like hot peppers. So this morning we are talking
- 0:44about rigid thinking. So why did I mention the chicken
- 0:48food this morning and rigid thinking?
- 0:50Because a lot of people think that you can't give Chicken
- 0:53certain things or wow, I didn't know chickens could do that and
- 0:56or they'll say, oh well when they see what my chickens eat,
- 0:59they'll say, well, you shouldn't Do that.
- 1:01And you shouldn't do this. And I always laugh because
- 1:04That's rigid thinking and we have to recognize that this
- 1:09shows up in the smallest of small places within us we hear
- 1:15something. We do something a certain way
- 1:18and that becomes the way it always is and we don't change
- 1:21our way of thinking, we don't account for new information, we
- 1:26don't account for new ways of thinking.
- 1:29We just stick with the information we have and we run
- 1:33with it and then that becomes our reality.
- 1:36And when we run into somebody that has different thinking, we
- 1:39often become super rigid about are thinking without considering
- 1:45whether that still serves us or not.
- 1:47So today's podcast is all about do these things serve us.
- 1:53So when you start to have rigid thinking and believe me you all
- 1:56have it, we all have it, we can't get away from it, it's
- 1:59just how we are, how we will say well that's how I was raised or
- 2:03this is the way my My grandparents taught me or this
- 2:08is what I learned in school or this is what a professor.
- 2:11Might one of my favorite professors showed me to do it
- 2:13this way. Whatever it might be, doesn't
- 2:16matter what matters is that? There's no room for
- 2:20consideration in other possibilities.
- 2:23There's no room to look at it a different way and say huh?
- 2:27Could this work a certain way? Could this be perceived another
- 2:32way we ran into this This the other day in our household and
- 2:37we have a sink in our garage, one of the big utilities thinks
- 2:42and I was purging cleaning, getting rid of things.
- 2:46And on the top shelf of a rack, in our garage, my husband has a
- 2:51saw a big thing. Like I want to say, it's a skill
- 2:54saw but I'm this is so not my skill set, no pun intended.
- 2:58And it was it's big. Saw that kind of like comes down
- 3:01with an arm. I don't know what it's called
- 3:02but this it's a big song. It's on the top shelf.
- 3:04So I said to him, why do you have it on the top shelf?
- 3:07Can't you put it on another shelf and he said, it doesn't
- 3:09fit. It doesn't clear, and I said
- 3:10it's so fun. It's so hard up there.
- 3:12It's like so hard for you to reach up and get it down.
- 3:14Why don't you put it under the sink?
- 3:17And he says it's not going to fit and I say I'm standing there
- 3:20and I'm looking at it and I'm like, no, it's going to fit.
- 3:22It could fit under the sink. He's like it's not going to fit
- 3:24under the sink him and I'm like, no, it will really fit under the
- 3:27sink Mark. And I'm looking at it now mind
- 3:29you my husband is Uber auditory and I am Uber visual so I can
- 3:37measure. And I was raised by a man who
- 3:39was a contractor. And I have like the unbelief and
- 3:43he was a master Carpenter. So I was like constantly taught
- 3:49to measure things. Look at things, see things.
- 3:51So, here I am looking at it. And in my mind I can see that.
- 3:54Yes, there's a pipe under the sink but there's also a shape of
- 3:57the saw and it can slide right in.
- 3:58So we start having this conversation.
- 4:00Now, mind you this would have been easily solved.
- 4:03Except my husband was in the Rigid moment and he looks at it
- 4:06and he says it's not going to work and I'm standing there and
- 4:10I'm trying not to be that woman and I'm going.
- 4:12No, it's really going to work. I'm telling you it's going to
- 4:14work and so he says it's just not going to work.
- 4:17Why can't you let it go? You're Relentless.
- 4:19Well, that is true. I am Relentless but I couldn't
- 4:22let it go because I knew it would work.
- 4:24So I said, okay. So he went to go do something
- 4:27else and I proceeded to put the saw under the sink and when he
- 4:31walked back and I said, look if it's under the sink, Ink.
- 4:35And there was a moment and you could see it in his face where
- 4:39there was a moment where he was like irritated with me and proud
- 4:43of me at the same moment, one that I didn't give up and that I
- 4:45made it work for him and to that, like geez she's freaking
- 4:49Relentless. So this is where rigid thinking
- 4:53Catches Us. Instead of in that moment, he
- 4:56could have said to me, hey, you know what, let's just give it a
- 5:00shot and see, but he didn't because he was sticking with
- 5:03what he came up with. I could have backed off and
- 5:06walked away but I was rigid as well.
- 5:08This is not just about him being rigid.
- 5:10This is about me being rigid in my relentlessness.
- 5:13It shows up all the time and in the most finite of situations.
- 5:19So imagine how it shows up in what we believe about life or
- 5:23what we believe is, right and wrong.
- 5:26Oh my God that that is one that will send us write down a rabbit
- 5:30hole. So I'm asking you not to give up
- 5:34that. Piece of yourself because that
- 5:36would be silly. We can't give these things up.
- 5:38Like I've said a million times, you can't throw emotions off the
- 5:41bus. You can't throw these things off
- 5:44the bus because they're there. But what you can do is challenge
- 5:48them and you can ask yourself, how can I see this differently?
- 5:52Is there another way for me to do this and the dreaded question
- 5:55that I can't stand asking myself, but do it often.
- 5:58Am I being rigid? Because sometimes more often
- 6:02than I like to think I am being Yes, let me be a total
- 6:06confession right now. I'm rigid when it comes to
- 6:08loading my dishwasher. I'm rigid when it comes to
- 6:11folding my towels. I'm rigid.
- 6:13When it comes to organizing my closets.
- 6:15Yes. Yes yes yes.
- 6:17And am I going to change it? No.
- 6:19But you know why? That's okay, because I've made
- 6:21the Declaration, the proclamation I've gone out
- 6:24there. I've said, this is the way it is
- 6:27and this is how it's going to stay and I don't put it on
- 6:30anybody else. They can put the dishes in the
- 6:33dishwasher the way they need to. To, if I want to reorganize
- 6:36them, that's on me, and I'm okay with that.
- 6:39So, it's all about making space for other people.
- 6:42It's all about making space for yourself.
- 6:44It's all about staying, not quite so rigid.
- 6:47In your thinking that you cause yourself stress, because that's
- 6:51where it really comes from and that's what this is all about.
- 6:54So, go out there today, figure out if you're too rigid and how
- 6:58to just tweak that a little tiny bit and I hope you guys have a
- 7:01very blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 7:04Bye. Bye.
